DJAM KARET ~ THE RITUAL CONTINUES
HC PRODUCTIONS 007 ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1982 - 1987 Released: 1993

2nd album by the US Prog band Djam KaretFind albums by this artist, which is undoubtedly one of the most innovative, creative and groundbreaking Prog outfits to emerge on the scene. Founded in 1984 and focused around two guitarists: Gayle EllettFind albums by this artist and Mike HendersonFind albums by this artist, with bassist Henry J. OsborneFind albums by this artist and drummer Chuck Oken, Jr.Find albums by this artist, all of whom remain in the band 20+ years later, the band also uses occasional guest musicians and as-hoc members. Their music includes a wide range of styles and influences – psychedelic, Prog, electronic and ambient, rock and blues – based on a framework of a jam band and shifting dramatically form one album to another. Their vast recorded output presents an entire universe of music, which requires attentive repeated listening, but is deeply rewarding. Djam Karet were one of the first bands to realize that shopping for recording contracts with the music moguls is pointless and contra-productive and they released their own music independently. Later on they started also to cooperate with CuneiformFind albums on this label Records to reissue and release some (but not all) of their music. The CD reissue of this album includes live material recorded in 1987, which was included on the original cassette / LP release of The Ritual ContinuesFind albums with this title, as well as a couple of tracks from a 1982 cassette release by pre-Djam Karet group called Happy CancerFind albums by this artist.

DJAM KARET ~ COLLABORATOR
HC PRODUCTIONS 008 (Barcode: 796086000828) ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1994 Released: 1994

A very ambitious and groundbreaking project by Djam Karet, which realizes for the first time the concept of co-composing and co-recording music by different artists, without the need of physical contact. The members of the band asked seven musician friends (Kit Watkins, Steve Roach and others) to compose and record pieces of music and then send the recorded music to them. The band then recorded their contributions on top of the existing music and thus created a collaboration project. The resulting music is a dense, complex and intricate matrix of sounds, often dark and depressing, but always fascinating. Obviously this music would be more interesting to listeners of ambient / contemporary classical listeners than the average Prog fan, but people with open minds (and ears) should find here a treasure chest of lasting musical challenges.

DJAM KARET ~ STILL NO COMMERCIAL POTENTIAL
HC PRODUCTIONS 009 ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1998 Released: 1998

Among many things that make Djam KaretFind albums by this artist a very special musical phenomenon is their total dedication to their musical philosophy, which is entirely free of any commercial aspects. Their first release, recorded 15 years prior to the recordings contained on this album, was entitled No Commercial PotentialFind albums with this title and this one bears an almost identical title to symbolize that nothing (as far as their music is concerned) changed. They still play what they feel is appropriate and worthwhile, completely oblivious to what critics and fans alike may say. This album contains a set of wholly improvised music, recorded with a single stereo microphone during two jam sessions. The album reflects just one of the many sides of Djam Karet’s music of course, the spontaneous, improvised, free-spirited side. They can be organized and play composed pieces, as we all know, with passion and elegance and it is great to see a group of musicians who can live and equally enjoy both worlds. Definitely worth investigating.

DJAM KARET ~ ASCENSION
HC PRODUCTIONS 012 (Barcode: 747014432020) ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2000 - 2001 Released: 2001

Ascension is a companion album to New Dark AgeFind albums with this title (subtitled New Dark Age Vol.2) and includes outtakes of the New Dark Age sessions, which were not included on the album. The concepts and musical ideas of the album are further explored and expanded here, with the entire range of Djam KaretFind albums by this artist’s technical vocabulary. The atmosphere is more ambient than on the original album, with many world music accents and long contemplative passages, making this an ideal late-night listening favorite. Pink FloydFind albums by this artist and Porcupine TreeFind albums by this artist fans should find this particularly interesting, although this music is slightly more demanding.

DJAM KARET ~ NO COMMERCIAL POTENTIAL
HC PRODUCTIONS 013 ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1985 - 2002 Released: 2004

This is the long overdue reissue of Djam KaretFind albums by this artist’s debut album, which was originally released only on cassette and sees the first release on CD only almost 20 years later. The highly improvised music played by the band was released under the ironic title No Commercial PotentialFind albums with this title, a commonly known phrase used by the Music Industry executives to describe music which is not compliant with the formula for making money on the charts. Djam Karet well understood that the kind of intellectual, free-spirited and quality music they perform has obviously very little appeal to the Music Industry moguls, and therefore decided from the very beginning to produce and release their music independently, which they still continue to do to this very day. The original debut album is released here on CD 1, which is paired with another recording of freely improvised rock music on CD 2, recorded 17 years later, during the A Night For BakuFind albums with this title sessions. The second CD is subtitled …And Still Getting The Ladies, another tongue in cheek reference to a Music Industry maxim about success. The music is of course highly rewarding and the album is a must for the many Djam Karet fans and a worthy challenge to new listeners.

DJAM KARET ~ THE HEAVY SOUL SESSIONS
HC PRODUCTIONS 015 (Barcode: 747014595022) ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2009 Released: 2010

After five years of silence, the veteran US Prog group Djam KaretFind albums by this artist returns with a new album, which proves their relevancy again beyond a shadow of a doubt. The double-guitar lead by Mike HendersonFind albums by this artist and Mike MurrayFind albums by this artist, keyboards by Gayle EllettFind albums by this artist, bass by Aaron KenyonFind albums by this artist and drums by Chuck Oken, Jr.Find albums by this artist create powerful vistas between Fusion and Ambient, but completely uniquely Djam Karet, as always.

DJAM KARET ~ SONIC CELLULOID
HC PRODUCTIONS 019 (Barcode: 747014626825) ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2016 Released: 2017

This is the eighteenth album by American Prog group Djam KaretFind albums by this artist, founded in 1984, which still manages to produce meaningful music within the genre that is mostly obsolete today, following the second phase of its existence. The lineup on this album features all four founding members of the group: guitarist / keyboardist Gayle EllettFind albums by this artist (who plays on all tracks), guitarist Mike HendersonFind albums by this artist (who plays only on a couple of tracks), bassist Henry J. OsborneFind albums by this artist (who plays on six tracks) and drummer Chuck Oken, Jr.Find albums by this artist (who plays on all tracks). Guitarist Mike MurrayFind albums by this artist and bassist Aaron KenyonFind albums by this artist play on selected tracks. The album presents ten relatively short pieces (surely by Prog standards), all co-credit to the entire group.

The music, as the title suggests, is more ambient oriented than the standard Prog ventures, following the quite popular concept of "soundtrack to an imaginary movie", which deals more with "impressionist sound painting" than with actual melody, harmony and rhythm approach, which appears here only occasionally. Not being committed to the usual conceptual limitations of Prog, the music can be interpreted quite freely, depending largely on the listener´s state of mind and his imagination.

There is enough diversity in this music to keep the listener interested and anticipating the next move, assuming the listener is a priori open to ambient music, which develops slowly and lacks catchy hooks, which most Prog listeners are expecting, being totally addicted to them. On the other hand it seems that after thirty-three years of playing and recording music, the group is showing early signs of lassitude, at least in comparison to their early days. One might wonder if this might be the final opus.

Overall this is definitely an album worth investigating, especially for ambient Prog lovers, which offers a musical journey of imagination. Fans expecting fiery endless guitar solos and other Prog nonsense will be disappointed.

DJAM KARET ~ A SKY FULL OF STARS FOR A ROOF
HC PRODUCTIONS 019A (Barcode: 747014631423) ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2017 - 2019 Released: 2019

This is the nineteenth album by the American Prog group Djam KaretFind albums by this artist, which marks the group´s thirty-fifth Anniversary. The group still includes the four founding members: guitarists Gayle EllettFind albums by this artist and Mike HendersonFind albums by this artist, bassist Henry J. OsborneFind albums by this artist and drummer Chuck Oken, Jr.Find albums by this artist Several guest players appear on selected tracks. The album presents eight original compositions, collectively credited to the group.

Musically this album expands the ambient influences that dominated the previous album "Sonic CelluloidFind albums with this title" and moves even further away from the "classic" Prog idiom into the field of sonic explorations with a tad of World Music influences and Minimal Music aesthetics, which adds up to what might be described as soundtrack material for imaginary movies. There are many wonderfully melodic moments and the relaxed, laid back atmosphere of the proceedings set a dreamy "out of time" mood.

I have been following Djam Karet over the years since their inception and it´s really great to see that they make a continuous effort to stay apart from the Prog "mainstream" from day one. This consistency is as important as the group´s musical inventiveness. In fact for listeners for whom this might be the first encounter with Djam Karet, most would probably not associate the group with their Prog roots at all.

Personally I have enjoyed this music very much and had a most enjoyable listening experience, simply by letting myself to become completely immersed in the music. It is a kind of music that would probably sound differently every time, depending of the mindset of the listener, which of course does not happen too often.

Overall this is another successful step in the long history of one of the most unique American bands, which is one of the very few who still have something meaningful to say. Well done Gentlemen!

ZBIGNIEW PREISNER / LISA GERRARD ~ IT`S NOT TOO LATE
PREISNER PRODUCTIONS 003 (Barcode: 5903111904050) ~ POLAND ~ Special Products

Recorded: 2022 Released: 2022

This is a new chapter in the continuous cooperation between Polish composer Zbigniew PreisnerFind albums by this artist and Australian vocalist / composer Lisa GerrardFind albums by this artist. In addition to Gerrard’s vocals, the music is created by Preisner, who plays the Hammond organ and other instruments, pianist Dominik WaniaFind albums by this artist, cellist Magdalena PlutaFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Jerzy GlowczewskiFind albums by this artist. The vocals were recorded at the Synagogue in a small town of Bobowa in southern Poland and the instrumental parts in Preisner’s studio. The album presents nine tracks, five co-composed by Preisner and Gerrard, three composed by Preisner and one partly based on a piece from the soundtrack of the film “Man Of God”, composed by Preisner. Gerrard sings in her metaphysical language.

As usual with Preisner’s projects, the music is simply beyond classification. Obviously, considering his legacy as a cinematic composer, cinematic music comes instinctively to mind, by that would be a gross simplification, as cinematic music basically means nothing beyond music written specifically for cinema. The music on this album builds an entire universe of musical associations, encompassing Classical, Sacred, Contemplative, Ceremonial and so on, but honestly the most important is the emotional message this music is trying to convey, which offers a rainbow of sensations between deep despair and elated hope. Obviously deeply influenced by the reality of the world we live in, including the calamities of Pandemic and War, this music tries to rise a ray of hope, as the title suggests.

The music is very minimalistic, restrained and slowly developing, with an aura of a medieval piety, Jewish prayer, operatic arias and Ambient meditative vistas, led by Gerrard’s virtuosic vocals and delicately supported by instrumental passages, with occasional solos by the piano, cello or saxophone. The vocals are encircled by the sublime natural echo of the Synagogue, which inspires the very special ambience of the entire album.

Gerrard’s vocal improvisations are Godly in every respect, not surprising but always stunning anew, and combined with the music and instrumental support sound perhaps more convincing here than ever before. Both Preisner and Gerrard are natural phenomena of epic proportions, and combined here enhance and complement each other in a perfect win-win manifestation.

Overall, this is a deeply moving album and a very unique piece of music, which is completely universal, ageless and borderless musically. Created by an amalgam of great talents and deep conviction, this is an example of music which is able to move mountains. Thank you, my Friends, for the gift of music!

IRINA MILAN ~ PAHAN KUKKIA
PRO 007 ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz & Poetry

Recorded: 1989 - 1990 Released: 1990

This is a wonderful Jazz & Poetry album by Finnish vocalist Irina MilanFind albums by this artist recorded with a formidable team of Finnish Jazz musicians headed by saxophonist / composer Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist, who composed and arranged all the music, and including also pianist Seppo KantonenFind albums by this artist, bassist Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist, drummer Jukkis UotilaFind albums by this artist and percussionist Mongo AaltonenFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight songs, seven based on poems by the French poet Charles BaudelaireFind albums by this artist and one by another French poet Maxime Du CampFind albums by this artist, all translated into Finnish language.

The music is absolutely stunning and one of my favorite Koivistoinen´s creations in his extensive recorded legacy. Despite the time, language and cultural gaps between the original poetry and the contemporary approach of the music, it seems that this music and the poetry were destined for each other.

Milan is a superb vocalist and her clear, precise and highly emotional delivery is a pure delight from start to finish. The instrumental parts are also sublime with Koivistoinen playing some of the most passionate concise solos of his career. Kantonen is ideal in his role as sensitive accompanist and also delivers some great solo spots. The rhythm section is perfect for the job, and the veterans play with precision and vigor.

Overall this is a brilliant album, which reflects the best qualities of Finnish Jazz and the Jazz & Poetry idiom at its full glory. For some strange reason this album is still available (from SvartFind albums on this label Records) so every true music connoisseur in his right mind should be ordering it right now! The fact that you don´t know Finnish means absolutely nothing in this case ;)

JACEK MIELCAREK / MAREK WALAROWSKI ~ MELLOW LOOK
PRO 014 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2004 Released: 2005

This is a nice album by a duo of Polish Jazz musicians: saxophonist / clarinetist Jacek MielcarekFind albums by this artist and pianist Marek WalarowskiFind albums by this artist, who are both graduates of the Jazz Department of the Music Academy in Katowice. Together they perform twelve pieces, three of which are originals by Walarowski and nine are standards.

The music, as expected, is all melodic mainstream, with emphasis on the lyrical expression, which both musicians obviously tend to agree on. The original compositions fit very nicely into the overall atmosphere, offering solid melody and the same melancholic atmosphere as the standards selected for the recording.

As a duo both musicians display the affinity and mutual respect needed to cooperate and produce a unified statement combining the abilities and talents of both participants. The resulting music is elegant and flows gently, providing the listener with an opportunity to enjoy the music in a relaxed and intimate atmosphere.

This is one of those albums that are accessible to a wide audience due to their gentle character, but which keep an artistic integrity of the music intact, without compromising the essence of Jazz. As such it is definitely worth investigating, although it is probably very difficult to fine these days.

NIEMEN ~ LIVE IN OPOLE 1971
PROG ART 001 (Barcode: 4018564220013) ~ POLAND ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1971 Released: 2018

This is an archival album, which presents a live recording of a concert by the greatest ever Polish Rock / Prog musician of all times, vocalist / keyboardist songwriter and bandleader Czeslaw NiemenFind albums by this artist. The material performed at the concert includes two songs from Niemen´s fourth album "EnigmaticFind albums with this title" with music by Niemen and lyrics (poems) by the great Polish poet Cyprian Kamil NorwidFind albums by this artist and two songs from his fifth album "NiemenFind albums with this title" (a.k.a. "The Red AlbumFind albums with this title") with music and lyrics by Niemen. The fifth song is Niemen´s version of an Otis ReddingFind albums by this artist song ("I´ve Been Loving You Too Long"), which was unrecorded at the time and was about to appear on Niemen´s first English-language album "Strange Is This WorldFind albums with this title" in 1972. For the Niemen aficionados the album includes the crowd cheering during a ceremony of Niemen receiving the Gold Album award for "Enigmatic" celebrated by the traditional Polish "100 Years" blessing, which tragically was not even close to Niemen´s destiny.

Niemen is supported by a great band, which includes organist Jacek MikulaFind albums by this artist, guitarist Tomasz JaskiewiczFind albums by this artist, bassist Janusz ZielinskiFind albums by this artist and drummer Andrzej TylecFind albums by this artist and a trio of female background singers, which includes Krystyna PronkoFind albums by this artist, Zofia BorcaFind albums by this artist and Elzbieta LinkowskaFind albums by this artist, all three ex-members of the group RespectFind albums by this artist. This band is much more Rock oriented than the studio lineups, which recorded the two albums, and which include some of the best Polish Jazz musicians and therefore are way more Fusion oriented. Sadly the guitar is mostly lost in the live mix, which is a great pity. The sound is dominated by the organ and overall is quite satisfactory. Two of the songs last for almost twenty minutes, one for ten minutes and the remaining two for eight and five minutes – together almost an hour of Niemen Magic.

The music and the performances are of course stellar and there is no point in going any further into the musical qualities and the historic importance of this recording. For Niemen fans and Polish / East European Classic Rock connoisseurs this is an absolute must of course! This edition of this album is identical to the Green TreeFind albums on this label edition.

This is obviously a bootleg, since none of Niemen´s live recordings are approved by his family, which is a pity. The artwork is riddled by countless spelling mistakes, which is unbecoming for such important document and Niemen´s memory. But all things considered, this is definitely better than this music being unreleased – the proverbial lesser evil.

LIGHTHOUSE ~ THOUGHTS OF MOVIN` ON
PROG TEMPLE 8050 (Barcode: 4753314805019) ~ CANADA ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1971 Released: 2016

This is the fifth album by Canadian Brass Rock group LighthouseFind albums by this artist, formed in 1968 by drummer / vocalist Skip ProkopFind albums by this artist. The group’s lineup included between thirteen and eleven members, with brass and rhythm sections and several members featured on vocals, performing quite elaborate vocal harmonies. The album presents ten original songs written by the band members.

Lighthouse had several gifted songwriters and their songs often charted on the Canadian charts. The songs have great melodies and the wonderful instrumental arrangements and brass riffs are a great reminder of times long gone.

The music is somewhat less Jazz oriented than that of other contemporary Brass Rock bands, like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, ChicagoFind albums by this artist and others, but features the same characteristics and often offers more elaborate instrumentation and genuinely belongs to the Brass Rock idiom.

It’s good to see this finally available on CD. A must for Brass Rock fans of course.

LIQUID SCARLET ~ LIQUID SCARLET

1st album by the Swedish Prog group Liquid ScarletFind albums by this artist, which plays somewhat heavier brand of the genre with a typical Scandinavian dark sound and gloomy atmosphere, similar to other Scandinavian bands but not as unique as the best of those. Altogether an ambitious debut, which shows potential for the future, but the music, especially, needs to be more captivating to make them really stand out. Don´t take me wrong, this is still a very decent album, which most Prog fans will enjoy and fans of the Scandinavian Prog will surely enjoy even more, but considering the incredibly high standard displayed by other Scandinavian bands, who practically rule the Prog world in the last decade, Liquid Scarlet are not one of them yet.

The band is a sextet, with the usual guitar / keyboards / bass / drums lineup, fronted by two lead vocalists, which enables them to use a lot of vocal harmonies. The music is beautifully melodic and the long tracks allow for extended instrumental passages, which are executed elegantly and with a lot of passion. In some respect the band is similar to the Swedish band The Flower KingsFind albums by this artist, at their best, but manages to avoid being repetitious and excessive, like the FK often are. The title track is a five-part suite lasting almost 50 minutes. This is a very impressive follow up to their great debut and another example of the Scandinavian Prog, which rarely disappoints. A must to classic Prog lovers!

CROSS ~ WAKE UP CALL
PROGRESS 048 (Barcode: 7320470152096) ~ SWEDEN ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2011 Released: 2012

This is the tenth album by the veteran Swedish Prog band CrossFind albums by this artist, led by multi-instrumentalist / vocalist / composer Hansi CrossFind albums by this artist and including core members: bassist Lollo AndersonFind albums by this artist and drummer Tomas HjortFind albums by this artist. Several additional guest musicians also participate, adding their contributions and enriching the overall sound of the band. The album comprises of six compositions, five of which are new and one (added as a bonus track), written over a decade earlier by Hansi, was originally recorded by the group SpektrumFind albums by this artist and now gets a new treatment by Cross. Hansi composed almost all the music and wrote most of the lyrics, with just some slight cooperation by the other band members.

The music is great example of contemporary Symphonic Prog, which amalgamates the legacy of the classic period of the genre with modern sound. Well defined melodic themes, expanded instrumental passages, tempo changes and multilayered soundscapes are all utilized here, with a surprisingly fresh effect, way superior to most contemporary Neo-Prog efforts. With eyes closed and total surrender to the music, this sounds like a lost 1970s album, recently discovered and remastered. Of course we are talking influences here, not an attempt to purposely reproduce anything, other than respect and gratitude to the forefathers of the genre. In my book creating an album, which sounds as if it was recorded in the 1970s is Progress encapsulated.

The level of musicianship and professionalism involved with recording this album is quite remarkable. The sound is perfect for this kind of music, avoiding the shrillness of Prog Metal, which seems to dominate most contemporary releases. The mix enables all instruments to be perfectly audible and the vocal parts are kept on the same level as the instruments, which allow them to merge perfectly into a coherent and pleasurable whole. The melodic and harmonic content, although typical of the genre, is interesting enough to keep the listener alert, even on the tracks with epic length (over ten minutes), which again is quite rare nowadays.

It is becoming more and more difficult to create any truly worthwhile Prog music, as the genre ages, stubbornly resisting change and absurdly progress itself, more than any other musical genre. Therefore staying within the somewhat outdated boundaries of the genre and still being able to create challenging, intelligent and uplifting music is quite remarkable. Hansi and his cohorts deserve kudos for a job well done indeed. Wholeheartedly recommended!

SILHOUETTE ~ ACROSS THE RUBICON
PROGRESS 049 (Barcode: 7320470163450) ~ NETHERLANDS ~ Progressive Rock

This is the third album by the Dutch Prog band SilhouetteFind albums by this artist, which comprises of guitarist / vocalist Brian de GraeveFind albums by this artist, keyboardist / vocalist Erik LaanFind albums by this artist, bassist Gerrit Jan BloeminkFind albums by this artist and drummer / vocalist Jos UffingFind albums by this artist. Guest guitarist Aldo AdemaFind albums by this artist contributes a number of guitar solos. The album includes eight original songs, all co-composed and co-written by the band, three of which are over eleven minutes long. The album, although not a concept album as such, has a common lyrical subject matter, which deals, as the title suggests, with crossing points of no return.

The music is characterized by a typical Neo-Prog sound and harmonic approach, with layers of lush keyboard sounds, screaming guitars and a lot of echo and reverb, omnipresent on most contemporary Prog albums. The three vocalists share lead vocal duties equally well, with a recognizable foreign accent, making one wonder why they don´t stick to their mother tongue. Overall the album offers absolutely nothing innovative or particularly challenging, but it is wonderfully melodic and pleasantly lyrical, which will make many Prog fans happy. The instrumental performances are all quite fine, but the overbearing keyboards leave little space for the other instruments to be heard properly at times.

All in all this is definitely not a bad album, and quite a pleasant listening experience. The melodic contents is certainly commendable and the execution quite spotless. Perhaps the lack of ambitious drive towards more experimental material is exactly what makes this band tick and hordes of Neo-Prog fans will probably find this to be exactly what makes them happy. The bliss of conformity…

For fans looking for another tasty and familiar piece of Neo-Prog delight, look no further; yer musical snobs just keep looking!

CHRIS ~ CITY OF LIGHT
PROGRESS 050 (Barcode: 7320470160428) ~ NETHERLANDS ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2012 Released: 2012

This is the third album by the Dutch Prog multi-instrumentalist / songwriter Christiaan BruinFind albums by this artist a.k.a. ChrisFind albums by this artist, who uses contemporary recording technology to perform as a one-man-band, playing all the instruments and delivering the vocals all by himself. Guitarist Bas ImmerzelFind albums by this artist adds guitar solos on a couple of tracks. The album offers six lengthy tracks, all composed by Chris.

Such one-man projects are not unusual on the Prog scene and have been done for many years with various degree of success. It all depends of course on what the musician in question has to offer musically, aesthetically and intellectually. Contemporary electronic instruments, computer software and recording tools enable such one-man projects to be created with relative effortlessness, which of course is a double-edged sword as far as the results are concerned. In today´s reality so much music is being produced and then made available to listeners via the Internet, that it becomes increasingly more difficult to separate the jewels from the heaps of trivial rubbish.

The album offers the listeners some catchy melodic phrases but the music somehow never really takes off, staying mostly monotonous and subdued. The six tracks all sound dangerously uniform, turning the entire album into one continuous flow of "more of the same". The drums, which are up-front almost at all times (perhaps due to the fact that Chris is a drummer in another band), dominate the music, and unfortunately sound like computer generated patterns being simply repeated ad nauseam. The vocals are mostly synthesized and full of exaggerated theatrics a la GenesisFind albums by this artist, which was quite enough when it happened originally. The overall sonic quality of the album also has major flaws, with the music sounding muffled and mushy, perhaps purposely so, but definitely unnerving.

All in all this album is a classic example of contemporary Neo-Prog, which has very little to offer, mostly recycling the same musical resources that have been already thinned out to death. It also doesn´t offer any performing buzz whatsoever.

Probably some diehard Neo-Prog fans will completely disagree with me and love this album to bits. De gustibus non est disputandum?

HIDDEN LANDS ~ IN OUR NATURE
PROGRESS 051 (Barcode: 7320470166918) ~ SWEDEN ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2012 Released: 2012

This is the debut album by Swedish Prog band Hidden LandsFind albums by this artist, which was formed by four ex-members of the band Violent SilenceFind albums by this artist: keyboardist / guitarist / songwriter Hannes LjunghallFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Bjorn WestenFind albums by this artist, vocalist Bruno EdlingFind albums by this artist and bassist Phillip BastinFind albums by this artist. The quintet lineup was completed by drummer Gustav NybergFind albums by this artist. The album includes six original pieces, all written and composed by Ljunghall, one of which an instrumental.

With a double keyboard lineup the group is capable of playing a lot of notes at the same time, which normally would have been a certain recipe for overdoing it, but they somehow manage to avoid that trap, which is already a success. In fact the two keyboardists manage to complement each other quite cleverly, producing together an amazing array of synthesized keyboards sounds, which sound interesting and are often fresh and surprisingly original. The rhythm section is rather restrained, which is perfect for this setting, playing exactly what is needed and leaving the frontline to the keyboards and occasional guitar improvisations. The vocal parts are limited, with most of the music being instrumental and the vocalist is also somewhat composed, which again works rather well in the overall scheme of things and is infinitely more pleasing that having manic screams torturing the listeners´ ears. Of course the lyrics are in English (again), which is a shame. What is wrong with Swedish I ask?

The music is the strongest asset of this album; moody, atmospheric, laid-back and beautifully melodic, with that certain Scandinavian gloominess and melancholy Proggers love so much. All six compositions are pretty much on the same level musically, which creates a pleasant listening experience from start to finish – definitely a rarity among the Neo-Prog releases in the last decade. This album has some brilliant double keyboards moments and on the whole is an excellent Prog experience, which should be appreciated even among the sternest fineschmeckers.

These musicians have a lot of potential and I hope they keep the band together this time, with us looking forward to their next recording. Although not a mind-blowing masterpiece, it is a very solid album, which should be well received by most Prog connoisseurs, right across the sub-genre chasms. Wholeheartedly recommended!

PROGRESS 053 (Barcode: 7320470172247) ~ SWEDEN ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2011 - 2012 Released: 2013

This is the sixth album by Swedish Prog trio Brother ApeFind albums by this artist, which consists of guitarist / keyboardist / lead vocalist Stefan DamicolasFind albums by this artist, bassist / keyboardist Gunnar MaxenFind albums by this artist and drummer Max BergmanFind albums by this artist. The album comprises of ten tracks, eight of which include lyrics, one uses vocalese are another one is an instrumental. Damicolas wrote all the music as well as the lyrics.

The music is surprisingly melodic and even mellow, a phenomenon happening rarely in today´s Prog, which has the tendency of "going Metal" almost universally, mostly of course being pretty dreadful. None of that will be found here, however, which is comforting. The vocals and the instrumental work are all quite excellent, using up to date sound and technology, but not overdoing it. The lyrics are in English, as always with Swedish bands; these guys must really hate their own language.

The music is mostly very pleasant, not terribly ambitious but good enough to keep things interesting, which is already much more than most other Neo-Prog groups manage to achieve. This is only borderline Prog and might be easily categorized as Alternative Rock, but who cares about the labels. Sound-wise the music is dominated by keyboards, which can be overbearing, but in this case works quite well. Many different synthesized sounds are placed, layer upon layer, to create a rich, almost symphonic sound at times and then spiced with some good guitar solos. The percussive rhythms played by the drummer are also executed very nicely and are quite inventive.

Overall this is a pleasant album, which does not compromise musical quality in order to sound "nice" but manages to achieve it due to its highly melodic songwriting and eschewing the dreaded metallic distortions. Many older Prog fans will find this very listenable and even surprising. Definitely worth investigation!

VIOLENT SILENCE ~ A BROKEN TRUCE
PROGRESS 055 (Barcode: 7320470172254) ~ SWEDEN ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2012 Released: 2013

This is the third album by Swedish Progressive Rock group Violent SilenceFind albums by this artist, formed and led by drummer / keyboardist / songwriter Johan HedmanFind albums by this artist, with vocalist Martin AhiquistFind albums by this artist, keyboardists Hannes LjunghallFind albums by this artist and Bjorn WestenFind albums by this artist and bassist Anders LindskogFind albums by this artist. The album comprises of just four epic tracks, all lasting over ten minutes, three of which were co-composed by Hedman, Ljunghall and Westen and one by Hedman and Ljunghall, with all lyrics written by Hedman.

Stylistically the music is "frozen in time" in the early 1970s Symphonic Prog, with immediate reminiscences of early YesFind albums by this artist and their contemporaries. The melodic suites are well structured and interestingly developed, but introduce no innovation to the music that was first defined forty years earlier, for good and for bad. The high-pitched vocals are clean and in tune, but in the long range can be somewhat unnerving. There is a bit of Celtic and perhaps also Scandinavian Folk influence, which makes this music better than most similar efforts.

The instrumental work is spotless, obviously dominated by the keyboards, which play many interesting riffs and fine solos. The rhythm section is doing a perfect job, keeping the music streaming forward and the background elegantly rich, with some superb bass passages.

Overall this is a very good Symphonic Prog album, which should delight the die-hard fans of the genre, who simply want more of the same. People who moved on to greener pastures will find this a bit archaic, but nobody can deny the obvious class these guys represent.

VILLE EMARD BLUES BAND ~ COMPLETE VEBB 1973-1975
PROGRESSON 01 ~ CANADA ~ Progressive Rock

Don´t be confused by the name - VEBB were a Canadian supergroup, which although had its beginnings as a blues outfit, soon developed into a full fledged Prog group. They played long and complex compositions and there was plenty of great improvising, especially during live performances. This wonderful album collects all their recorded output and is a great tribute to one of the best ever Canadian groups. The use of brass places them close to the early jazz / rock genre as well. Absolutely worth discovering!

3rd album and another splendid acheivement by the US band Frogg CafeFind albums by this artist. More mature, settled and subtle than their previous excellent output, which means this is truly 1st class stuff. The usual mixture of superb songwriting and inspired playing with slight jazzy undertones and enough intellectual challenge to keep you alert at all times is definitley enough to give this album a repeated spin. K² ~ BOOK OF THE DEAD
PROGROCK 160 ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock

The US band K² created a lot of interest and expectations in the Prog and Fusion community, as it features the guitar talents of Allan Holdsworth, who achieved a solid following and admiration over the years. The album also features the (sadly) late singer Shaun Guerin, who died shortly after the album was recorded. The music is definitely more Prog than Fusion, with strong presense by the keyboards player Ken Jaques, who also wrote all the music. A great debut album, which keeps us all in suspense for the next one.

7th album by the excellent Spanish Prog group AmarokFind albums by this artist, definitely one of the most interesting ensembles active in contemporary Prog, which follows the direction the group initiated earlier to distant itself from the Symphonic Prog clichés and incorporating World Music influences into their music. With the incredible riches of the Spanish cultural background, which are all present here, the music also borrows from other Mediterranean and even Middle Eastern sources, creating a wonderful amalgam of musical traditions with modern music. 2nd album by US Prog group Puppet ShowFind albums by this artist, recorded almost 10 years after their debut album was released. The band continues the direction set a decade earlier, playing contemporary Symphonic Prog. Of the six tracks present, three are expanded composition timing at well over 10 minutes each. The instrumentation is typical, with a lead singer backed by a guitar / keyboards / bass / drums lineup. The music is very well developed and arranged and the instrumental skills of the players are excellent. Although there is nothing groundbreaking here, this is a solid effort and many Prog fans will find this album completely satisfying.

MAGIC PIE ~ MOTIONS OF DESIRE
PROGROCK 540 (Barcode: 837792009788) ~ NORWAY ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2005 Released: 2005

This is the 1st album by the excellent Norwegian Prog band Magic PieFind albums by this artist. The band is a sextet, with the usual guitar / keyboards / bass / drums lineup, fronted by two lead vocalists, which enables them to use a lot of vocal harmonies. The music is beautifully melodic and the long tracks (some over 20 minutes long) allow for extended instrumental passages, which are executed elegantly and with a lot of passion. In some respect the band is similar to the Swedish band The Flower KingsFind albums by this artist, at their best, but manages to avoid being repetitious and excessive, like the FK often are. This is a very impressive debut and another example of the Scandinavian Prog, which rarely disappoints. A must to classic Prog lovers!

Three guest musicians (two keyboardists and a female vocalist) help out on several tracks. The music and lyrics are all credited collectively to the group. The double-guitar front line furnishes the group with an aggressive Prog-Metal sound, which seems to be the preferred modus operandi by most contemporary Polish Prog groups. The vocalist has a strong and clear voice, which is ideal for this kind of music and as long as he stays inside the melody lines everything works out very well. Fans of Prog-Metal will love this stuff to bits, as it is extremely well played and overall interesting musically, but lovers of Prog recorded in the 1970s might find this a tad too "loud". I personally have to problem listening to this stuff and quite like it as well, if it comes in small doses. Highly recommended to Prog-Metal fans!

VOTUM ~ TIME MUST HAVE A STOP
PROGROCK 670 (Barcode: 837792009924) ~ POLAND ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2007 Released: 2008

This is the debut album by Polish Prog Metal band VotumFind albums by this artist, one of several bands arriving on the scene, which tried to follow in the steps of the international success achieved by the Polish band RiversideFind albums by this artist. The lineup, which recorded this album, includes vocalist Maciej KosinskiFind albums by this artist, guitarists Alek SalamonikFind albums by this artist and Adam KaczmarekFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Zbigniew SzatkowskiFind albums by this artist, bassist Bartek TurkowskiFind albums by this artist and drummer Adam LukaszekFind albums by this artist. The album was released in US and Europe by indie labels, probably hoping to achieve success similar to that of Riverside releases. The album comprises of eight original songs, with all music credited to the entire group and the lyrics written by the vocalist.

However, although Riverside has its heavy and even somewhat metallic elements, it is very much a Prog ensemble, whereas Votum simply takes things much more aggressively towards Prog Metal, which makes listening to this album a real trial for the listeners ears. Some of the songs have a real melody at its core, but soon after the intro it gets completely bashed out by the heavy guitar riffs, repeated ad nauseam. All these riffs have been already perfected by many bands all over the world decades earlier and playing them again simply adds nothing remotely innovative or ambitious to the result, hence no progress is achieved whatsoever.

Of course the band uses English lyrics, which are a deadly trap for most bans originating outside the native English zone. The vocalist struggles with the language, rather than expressing his feelings in his native language, which would have only benefited the overall result. With the racket around nobody can hear the lyrics most of the time anyhow. In the quieter passages the English does sound pretty ridiculous. Kosinski has a great voice and a theatrical ability, qualities that make vocalist stand out, but he should stick to his mother tongue.

All in all this could have been a much better album if the band simply applied some moderation on the volume and repetition of "old tricks", trying to be truly progressive and innovative. They are talented players and have a great lead singer, and they write some sweet tunes, but nobody can actually hear the beauty of their music behind all that mayhem.

I have read many enthusiastic reviews of this album, which if truth be told means most people are deaf or terribly biased or both. My votum seperatum in the meantime is: "make it better next time". Hopefully their next release will be much more mature and they´ll manage to overcome all that aggression.

ASSOCIATION P.C. / JEREMY STEIG ~ MAMA KUKU
PROMISING MUSIC 44100 (Barcode: 602517542846) ~ NETHERLANDS ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1973 Released: 2008

Association P.C.Find albums by this artist was one of several multi-national Jazz groups active in Europe during the late 1960 / 1970 explosive period of creative activity, which resulted in establishment of the European Jazz and its emancipation from the American Jazz traditions. With Britain as one epicenter of the new music, Netherlands, Germany and France were the other one. Their geographic proximity enabled the existence of multi-national groups, as the musicians were able to meet, rehearse and tour, all within a driving distance from their respective homes. These countries also had a common cultural background, which served as common bond between the musicians. The original group was formed by Dutch drummer Pierre CourboisFind albums by this artist (his initials are in the group’s name) with fellow Dutch players Jasper van`t HofFind albums by this artist – keyboards and Peter KrijnenFind albums by this artist – bass and the German guitarist Toto BlankeFind albums by this artist. Krijnen was soon replaced by German bass virtuoso Siggi BushFind albums by this artist. After van’t Hof left the group to form his own outfit (the legendary Pork PieFind albums by this artist), he was replaced by German keyboardist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist. The group recorded five albums, four of them on the legendary MPSFind albums on this label label, and this was the last of them. The idea for recording an album with American flautist Jeremy SteigFind albums by this artist was initiated by the legendary Jazz critic and resident MPS producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, who heard Steig perform at the Munich Jazz Festival, which was organized as one of the events for the Munich Olympic Games in 1972. Berendt was always looking for unusual musical combinations and inspired the (then) forming European Jazz scene by his unequivocal support and prophetic vision. Steig, although American, was always associated with the Avant-Garde and pursued his own search to expand his horizons beyond the stagnant Jazz mainstream. Therefore his rapport with the young European musicians, who were also on a quest to discover the unknown, happened naturally, as Berendt envisioned. The album was recorded live, another wise decision by Berendt, as the character of the music simply suited a spontaneous situation perfectly. Although Association P.C. is often associated with the European Jazz-Rock Fusion (probably due to the fact that electric guitar and keyboards were used), is fact the group had nothing to do with that genre. Blanke and Kuhn will later on play in or lead Jazz-Rock Fusion ensembles, but in that group they played quite a different sort of music, trying to expand Free Jazz (which served as a departure point) into Improvised Music. Steig understood that instinctively and cooperated beautifully. The peak of the album is reached on the 21+ minutes long spontaneously improvised piece, which was the original B-side of the LP. The performances are of course inspired and uplifting, as the musicians were all virtuosi and masters of their trade in spite of their young age. In retrospect the album caught for posterity a glorious moment and a fragment of what was happening on the European scene at the time, which makes it an immensely important document, in addition to being a superb musical experience, completely relevant to this very day. Kudos to Promising MusicFind albums on this label for the excellent remaster and elegant packaging of the reissue. A must!

DAVE PIKE SET ~ LIVE AT THE PHILHARMONIE
PROMISING MUSIC 44101 (Barcode: 602517545632) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1969 Released: 2008

American vibraphonist / composer Dave PikeFind albums by this artist was one of quite a few American Jazz musicians, who left the US and settled in Europe in the late 1960s, stifled by the atmosphere of the US scene at the time, which seemed to them as limiting and confining, especially in comparison to the exciting and flourishing developments happening in Europe at the time. Settling in Germany, Pike formed a quartet with three wonderful German musicians: guitarist Volker KriegelFind albums by this artist, bassist Johann Anton RettenbacherFind albums by this artist and drummer Peter BaumeisterFind albums by this artist, which he called the Dave Pike SetFind albums by this artist.

The quartet was signed by the legendary German MPSFind albums on this label label and recorded a series of albums for the label, of which this was the third and the only live recording. Recorded at a concert, which was presented during the 1969 edition of the Berliner Jazztage Festival, the quartet flies gracefully through a set of original compositions (mostly by Pike and Kriegel), presenting a refreshing use of the vibraphone / guitar dual lead and a splendidly inventive, but solid support by the rhythm section. The compositions are quite different from each other stylistically, but always top-notch, with plenty of space for extended solos. Kriegel proves to be the most inventive player of the quartet and his amazing inventions and brilliant technique clearly show his early steps on his way to become one of Europe’s best Jazz and later Jazz-Rock Fusion players ever.

It is interesting to compare the Dave Pike Set with the Gary BurtonFind albums by this artist quartet, one of the most interesting American Jazz ensembles at the time, which also featured the vibraphone / guitar (Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist) double lead and experimented with time signatures and early Fusion, Psychedelics and World Music excursions. The similarities are truly quite amazing. In retrospect the music lost none of its charm and adventurous nature and remains a splendid example of the European scene at the time.

Superbly remastered and elegantly packaged by Promising MusicFind albums on this label, this is a treasure and a great trip down the memory lane. Hopefully the other MPS recordings by this group will follow soon. Brilliant!

DON SUGARCANE HARRIS ~ SUGAR CANE`S GOT THE BLUES
PROMISING MUSIC 44102 (Barcode: 602517545731) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1971 Released: 2008

American violinist Don Sugarcane HarrisFind albums by this artist was one of the very few great Blues / Rock / Fusion artists playing the fiddle. He came to prominence as a member of the revolutionary John MayallFind albums by this artist’s BluesbreakersFind albums by this artist group and later as a member of Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist’s groups. This album, recorded live during the Berliner Jazztage Festival, presents Harris both as a leader and a participant in the legendary “Violin Summit” super-group, assembled by producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist. The solo appearance is in fact an offshoot project of the “Violin Summit”, which was a series of recordings on the legendary MPSFind albums on this label label, which celebrated the role of the violin in Jazz, Blues, Jazz-Rock Fusion and Rock and produced probably the most interesting document of music by violinists in the late 1960s / 1970s. The “Violin Summit” projects were based on a concept of a rhythm section and a series of violinist playing solo and in various combinations. The 1971 version of “Violin Summit”, which produced the “New Violin SummitFind albums with this title” double album, included also such great violin players as Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist (France), Michal UrbaniakFind albums by this artist (Poland) and Nipso BrantnerFind albums by this artist (Germany) – none of them is heard here – and a fantastic rhythm section consisting of the Norwegian guitarist Terje RypdalFind albums by this artist, German keyboardist Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist, New Zealander (resident in UK at the time) bassist Neville WhiteheadFind albums by this artist and British drummer Robert WyattFind albums by this artist. On the solo night Rypdal is replaced by German guitarist Volker KriegelFind albums by this artist. Surrounded by such illustrious musicians, Harris plays his heart out, improvising more daringly than ever before, no doubt inspired by the incredible performances by his European partners, who were musically much more advanced that Harris’ usual American companions. Overall the album presents a great event captured for posterity, with some amazing musical moments documenting the formation of the European Jazz-Rock Fusion, which bridges between such distant genres as the Blues and Free Jazz with elegance and vision. Beautifully remastered and packaged, this album is definitely worth investigation and attentive listening.

GEORGE DUKE ~ FACES IN REFLECTION
PROMISING MUSIC 44103 (Barcode: 602517546479) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1973 Released: 2008

American keyboardist / composer George DukeFind albums by this artist first came to prominence in the late 1960s, when he recorded with the French violinist Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist, who was invited to record in the US following his festival appearances. The association with Ponty opened quite a few doors for Duke, eventually leading to his stint with Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist, as well as his recording contract with the legendary MPSFind albums on this label label. He recorded 8 albums for the label between 1971 and 1976, of which this was the 3rd. Duke was a strange choice for MPS, as it concentrated mainly on presenting the European Jazz scene (the only exception was a series of albums recorded by Oscar PetersonFind albums by this artist), with strong Avant-Garde and later European Jazz-Rock Fusion, which was much more advanced that its American counterpart. Although Duke was closely associated with the US Jazz-Rock Fusion scene in the 1970s, playing with such prominent musicians like Stanley ClarkeFind albums by this artist, Billy CobhamFind albums by this artist and many others, his Fusion approach was strongly based on Blues, Funk and Soul, his “native” musical areas. Therefore his MPS recordings can be considered as some of the most commercial and accessible recordings ever released by this label. On this album Duke uses a trio (John HeardFind albums by this artist – bass and Leon Ndugu ChanclerFind albums by this artist – drums) and plays a wide array of synthesizers. He composed all but one of the tunes (the only composition, which isn’t his is by the Brazilian genius Milton NascimentoFind albums by this artist, and points towards Duke’s fascination with Brazilian music, which would flourish later in his career). There is no doubt about Duke’s brilliant technique as a player and his use of synthesizers is revolutionary at that time, but the compositions are definitely on the lighter side of Jazz and his vocals (however sparsely used) completely unnecessary. As much as I like Duke’s playing and many of his recordings, this is not one of his absolute highlights, even if it is much better that most of his later recordings starting from the 1980s and up to now. Nevertheless it is still a solid and enjoyable album worthy of being remembered. Of course many of his fans will enjoy this quality reissue with beautifully remastered sound and superb packaging.

CHARLIE MARIANO ~ HELEN 12 TREES
PROMISING MUSIC 44104 (Barcode: 602517546547) ~ USA ~ Jazz

American saxophonist / composer Charlie MarianoFind albums by this artist was a fascinating musical figure and a prime example of the difference between the American and the European approach to music in the late 1960s / 1970s. With an established career as a Bebop player in the US, Mariano left his home to travel extensively in the Far East, exploring the culture and music of India, Japan and other Asian countries. Upon his return the West, he settled in Germany and became involved with the local / European scene, not willing to return to the limited and narrow-minded American music scene at the time.

He was a member of many Avant-Garde groups, which at the time expanded the musical boundaries of both Jazz and Rock music, including such legendary outfits as EmbryoFind albums by this artist, Pork PieFind albums by this artist and United Jazz + Rock EnsembleFind albums by this artist. This recording for the legendary MPSFind albums on this label label, organized by the producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, presents a fascinating aspect of his activity at the time and in retrospect remains as one of his all time best albums. With a dreamy ensemble, which includes the Polish violin virtuoso Zbigniew SeifertFind albums by this artist, Czech keyboards wizard Jan HammerFind albums by this artist, British superstars: bassist Jack BruceFind albums by this artist and drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist and Indonesian percussionist Nippy NoyaFind albums by this artist (resident in Germany), Mariano delivers a fantastic session, featuring six of his originals and one composition by Hammer. He plays soprano and alto saxophones, flute and his beloved Indian reed instrument called nagaswaram, which became his trademark.

The music is a great mixture of many musical elements, including strong World Music influences, some Free Jazz and some Jazz-Rock Fusion. This strange amalgam works extremely well, creating a unique atmosphere, which is on one hand different from most other efforts at the time and on the other hand includes them all. Seifert “steals” the show every time he plays, as his virtuosity is overwhelming, but the ensemble work is overall superb, with plenty excellent solos. Uneven rhythmic patterns, “strange” melodies, great performances – all the elements that make music interesting and challenging are here for the listener to enjoy. This is a true classic of the era when daring was considered part of the norm. This beautifully remastered and packaged reissue is most welcome by many Mariano and European Jazz fans all over the globe. A must!

WOLFGANG DAUNER ~ FREE ACTION
PROMISING MUSIC 44105 (Barcode: 602517554993) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1967 Released: 2008

German pianist / composer Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist was one of the most important forefathers of European Jazz. A prolific composer, bandleader and activist, his contribution to the establishment of European Jazz and its emancipation from the restrains of the American Jazz tradition is truly immense. Dauner, who in addition to his musical activities, was also a prolific painter, always looked at music as an expression of an overall aesthetic / cultural point of view, with philosophical / social and even political undercurrents. Over the years Dauner created a most impressive body of work, encompassing many quite different styles and directions, spanning straightforward (but always unique) Jazz, Jazz-Rock Fusion, Free Jazz and Improvised Music.

In the mid-1970s Dauner formed the revolutionary United Jazz + Rock EnsembleFind albums by this artist – a multi-national group of superb European players, which brought Jazz-Rock Fusion to a level of absolute Art. He also co-founded the independent MoodFind albums on this label Records label, which for many years documented some of the most important and unconventional European music (mostly Jazz). His early recordings on the legendary MPSFind albums on this label label (as leader and sideman) are in retrospect perhaps the most important from the historical point of view, as they demonstrate the boldness, inspiration and urge to explore uncharted musical territories.

Encouraged and supported by the legendary Jazz critic and resident MPS producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, Dauner could freely express his visions, regardless how bold they might be, especially at the time. For this recording Dauner formed a septet, which included some of his regular cohorts like cellist / bassist Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist and American (but living in Germany) drummer Fred BracefulFind albums by this artist. He added three excellent German young players: saxophonist Gerd DudekFind albums by this artist (who would later become one of the central figures of German Improvised Music and Free Jazz), bassist Jurgen KargFind albums by this artist and drummer / tabla player Mani NeumeierFind albums by this artist (later a member of the legendary Guru GuruFind albums by this artist group). As the last member of the septet Dauner selected the then little known French virtuoso violinist Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist, who was of course destined to achieve worldwide recognition later on.

The septet performs five of Dauner’s compositions, which provide a skeletal framework for group improvisations by the band members. The double bass / drums lineup allows for complex rhythmic patterns to evolve, and of course there is plenty of space for individual solo spots, but overall the music is mostly a group effort, Dauner uses “prepared piano” (i.e. differently tuned one) to achieve some novel sound approach. In retrospect this is a superb document of the birth of European Jazz, which takes the Free Jazz idiom and pushes it (here still ever so gently) into the Improvised Music realm. The music lost none of its power and inspiration over the years and for a “first time” listener should be quite an ear opener. Kudos to Promising MusicFind albums on this label for the excellent remaster and elegant packaging of the reissue. A must!

But a decade later, Wilen left standard American Jazz behind and took an active role in the burgeoning new European scene in search of new musical adventures. The result is one of the wackiest albums ever recorded and a great document of the era. As the title suggests, Psychedelic instances probably had much to do with the resulting music. Danish (of Congolese origin) saxophonist / composer John TchicaiFind albums by this artist was one of the very few European musicians involved with the development of Free Jazz in the US in the early 1960s, where he played with Don CherryFind albums by this artist, Archie SheppFind albums by this artist and John ColtraneFind albums by this artist. Upon his return to Denmark in the late 1960s, Tchicai became one of the leaders of European Free Jazz movement, as well as a visionary precursor of Jazz-World Fusion, dedicating much of his work to incorporating African Music into Jazz. This momentous recording documents one of the first major Jazz-World Fusion works, recorded by a Jazz orchestra with 26 players, mostly Danish musicians, with the Dutch saxophone colossus Willem BreukerFind albums by this artist as a guest. The title track is a 22 minutes long Jazz suite, performed by the orchestra and composed by trumpeter Hugh SteinmetzFind albums by this artist, with the soloist improvising individually and collectively on top. It is an amazing piece of music and a daring excursion into uncharted musical territory, which sounds as awesome and impressive today as it did at the tome of its recording, perhaps even more so in retrospect, considering how little experimenting is done these days. The rest of the album includes music composed by Tchicai and performed by smaller ensembles, emphasizing the concept of collective improvisation. The entire album was conceived and eventually brought to life by the legendary producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, who prophetically recognized the importance of Tchicai’s work and struggled ceaselessly to make this immensely complex project to come to fruition. The music remains a timeless manifest to the most creative period in Jazz, when the unexpected was truly expected. Superbly remastered and elegantly packaged by Promising MusicFind albums on this label, this is a treasure. Brilliant!

PORK PIE ~ TRANSITORY
PROMISING MUSIC 44108 (Barcode: 602517602427) ~ NETHERLANDS ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1974 Released: 2008

Dutch keyboardist / composer Jasper van`t HofFind albums by this artist was one of the most prominent young Jazz musicians on the European scene in the late 1960s / 1970s and a pioneer of the new European Jazz, which emerged like a Phoenix on the ashes of the stagnant Jazz tradition. A founding member of the legendary Association P.C.Find albums by this artist, van`t Hof left the group in 1972 (to be replaced by Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist) and a year later formed his own ensemble Pork PieFind albums by this artist (the name being a tribute to a famous Lester YoungFind albums by this artist tune) with four other excellent musicians: the veteran American (but resident in Germany) saxophonist Charlie MarianoFind albums by this artist, Belgian guitarist Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, French bassist Jean-Francois Jenny-ClarkFind albums by this artist and Italian (but resident in France) drummer Aldo RomanoFind albums by this artist. The group recorded a couple of albums on the legendary German MPSFind albums on this label label, of which this was the first. The group played a completely innovative music, which moved freely between genres and included Free Jazz, Jazz-Rock Fusion, Psychedelic and World Music elements. All five members of the group were splendid musicians, blessed with virtuosity and inspiration, and the rapport between them was phenomenal. This album sounds today as advanced and oracular as it did at the time of the recording, losing nothing of its freshness, a true timeless masterpiece. The Brazilian percussionist Ivanir “Mandrake” Do NascimentoFind albums by this artist appears as a guest on some of the tracks and adds his magic to the mix. In retrospect this is a superb example of what was happening on the European Jazz scene at the time, underlining the perpetual quest for new forms of expression and ceaseless search for new musical vocabulary. Superbly remastered and elegantly packaged by Promising MusicFind albums on this label, this is a treasure and a great trip down the memory lane. Hopefully the other MPS recording by this group will follow soon. Brilliant!

JAN HAMMER ~ MALINY MALINY
PROMISING MUSIC 44109 (Barcode: 602517845954) ~ CZECHOSLOVAKIA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1968 Released: 2009

1st album by Czech pianist / composer Jan HammerFind albums by this artist, who would later become one of the cornerstone musicians of US Jazz-Rock Fusion movement as a member of John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist´s Mahavishnu OrchestraFind albums by this artist, as well as leader of his own groups. This live recording at the legendary Munich Domicile club, a meeting place of German and European Jazz scene for many years, is in many ways quite accidental. Hammer and his compatriot bassist George MrazFind albums by this artist (Jiri in Czech) were in Munich "in transit" actually heading for the US to join the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where they both received a scholarship. Of course they had been warmly received in Munich and gigged extensively waiting for the US trip to finalize. While there, the Soviet Block armies invaded their homeland in the infamous 1968 abrupt end of the "Czech Spring", one of the darkest moments of the Eastern-European history. Hammer and Mraz made the decision not to look back and moved to the US permanently, joining many other famous Czech musicians who were destined to build their career there, like Miroslav VitousFind albums by this artist for example. This recording is Hammer´s debut, presenting him on acoustic piano and organ, playing a set of his original compositions in a trio format with Mraz on electric bass and resident Domicile drummer (originally from Netherlands, but mostly active in Germany) Cees SeeFind albums by this artist on drums. The most striking effect of this recording is not hearing the "early" Hammer, already a highly accomplished pianist at the time with extensive classical training, but his Jazzy approach, which in years was about to move to the background of his output, which I personally see as a great shame. The music is also very interesting, with Hammer combining many Eastern-European motifs with Jazz, like many other Eastern-European musicians did at the time, creating some of the most memorable tunes in the process (see parallel work of Polish Jazz musicians). This is definitely a great historical document of the era and one can only be grateful to Promising MusicFind albums on this label for unearthing and reissuing this lovely musical glimpse into the past. As usual, the remastering, sound quality, packaging and extensive liner notes are beyond reproach. Warmly recommended!

ALPHONSE MOUZON ~ VIRTUE
PROMISING MUSIC 44110 (Barcode: 602517602410) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1976 Released: 2009

In the early 1970s the name of US drummer Alphonse MouzonFind albums by this artist was almost synonymous with Jazz-Rock Fusion as one of its most prominent drummers, rivaled only by Billy CobhamFind albums by this artist. His stints with Weather ReportFind albums by this artist and Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist´s Eleventh HouseFind albums by this artist are prime examples of his extraordinary abilities and technique. But Mouzon could play modern Jazz as well as Fusion, and he played with the best, including McCoy TynerFind albums by this artist and many other "conventional" Jazz musicians. This album is a brainchild of the legendary producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, who was a great fan of Mouzon´s playing and invited him to record for the legendary MPSFind albums on this label label twice, before recording this one with him as a leader. For the album Mouzon assembled quite an unusual quartet, incorporating one of the greatest (and often underappreciated) saxophonist Gary BartzFind albums by this artist, which seemed truly inappropriate, as Bartz was more then anything a player in the John ColtraneFind albums by this artist tradition, which was hardly "in place" in a Funk / Fusion setting. The result of course proves that all fears were completely unfounded and the quartet works like a dream. Completed by keyboardist Stu GoldbergFind albums by this artist (a frequent guest on the MPS label), whose feel for Fusion and Funk was beyond reproach, and bassist Welton GiteFind albums by this artist (a legendary bass player, who was a member of SteppenwolfFind albums by this artist! and played with a plethora of Rock, Pop and Jazz acts) the quartet performs a set of compositions composed by Mouzon, playing their ass off from start to finish, producing one of the most energetic and brilliant Fusion albums with no weak moments whatsoever. Mouzon is of course brilliant, a monster rhythmic (and polyrhythmic) driving power at all times. Both Goldberg and Bartz get plenty of solo space and the overall result is a Fusion orgy of unearthly proportions. Although this album is rarely mentioned as a Fusion "classic", it definitely deserves the status, which anybody listening to it should easily recognize. We should be grateful to Promising MusicFind albums on this label for reissuing this classic treasure! As usual, the remastering, sound quality, packaging and extensive liner notes are beyond reproach. Warmly recommended!

STU GOLDBERG ~ EYE OF THE BEHOLDER
PROMISING MUSIC 44111 (Barcode: 602517845923) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1981 Released: 2009

3rd (out of 4) albums recorded by US keyboardists / composer Stu GoldbergFind albums by this artist for the legendary German MPSFind albums on this label label, on which he also recorded several other albums as a sideman. This is his most ambitious project for the label, recorded with an expanded ensemble of nine musicians – a Jazz quintet and a string quartet – allowing him to present his original compositions in a broader musical landscape and with lush arrangements. Playing only the acoustic piano (in contrast to his usual use of keyboards), Goldberg performs his music with grace, sensitivity and obvious love, which fit the often romantic music perfectly. All the musicians are obviously highly skilled and dedicated, creating a perfect (perhaps a bit too perfect?) musical landscape. There is little musical innovation here, with the music flowing "pleasantly" even during the up-tempo numbers, thus being suitable for a wider (well beyond Jazz only) audience. Goldberg is clearly a great instrumentalist, running arpeggios up and down the scale with ease and elegance, but the format he chose to pursue here is dangerously close to being somewhat banal (never actually becoming so). As usual with the Promising MusicFind albums on this label the remastering, sound quality, packaging and extensive liner notes are beyond reproach.

ZBIGNIEW SEIFERT ~ MAN OF THE LIGHT
PROMISING MUSIC 44112 (Barcode: 602527326283) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1976 Released: 2010

This exceptional album by Polish violin virtuoso / composer Zbigniew SeifertFind albums by this artist was the first major exposure of his talents outside of his motherland. Legendary MPSFind albums on this label producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, who had close ties to the Polish Jazz scene, was aware of Seifert´s incredible talent and managed to pull off this recording session, bringing on board a superb team of players, which consisted of German pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and an American rhythm section: bassist Cecil McBeeFind albums by this artist and drummer Billy HartFind albums by this artist. Dutch pianist Jasper van`t HofFind albums by this artist also participates on one track.

Seifert composed all the music on this album, which is a great example of typical Eastern European Jazz, which cleverly combines elements of modern American Jazz, especially that of John ColtraneFind albums by this artist, with Folklore and Classical influences. Seifert´s "obsession" with Coltrane´s music and his improvisational technique are plainly evident, especially during the up-tempo numbers. The album´s title track is dedicated to Coltrane´s pianist McCoy TynerFind albums by this artist.

Hearing the album 35 years after it was recorded makes one realize how great music gets better with time, losing absolutely nothing of its initial grandeur. Both Seifert and Kuhn play some incredible solos here and the rhythm section supports them admirably every step of the way. Tragically, just three years after this music was recorded Seifert died, stricken by cancer, before his endless potential was realized and recognized properly.

Seifert managed to record several albums in the US before his untimely death, but this album is definitely his most important and most perfect legacy. Absolutely essential!
Side Note
The legendary German MPSFind albums on this label (Musik Produktion Schwarzwald) label, founded by Hans Georg Brunner-SchwerFind albums by this artist (HGBS) in 1963, first as SABAFind albums on this label Records and later on from 1968 as MPS Records, was the most important independent European record label, which had an enormous contribution to the development of European Jazz. For many years MPS cooperated with the legendary German producer / author Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, my Friend and Mentor, whose visionary approach and open-mindedness brought the crème de la crème of the Jazz (in the broadest meaning of the word) musicians from all over the world to the label. Between 1963 and 1983 MPS produced about five hundred albums, many of which are among the most important Jazz recordings on this planet.

In 1983 the MPS catalog was sold to UniversalFind albums on this label, which sadly resulted in all those artistic treasures to almost disappear from the face of the earth – a situation not only tragic but culturally criminal. Universal reissued a part of the MPS albums (probably 128 titles) on CD between 1999 and 2011 under the "Most Perfect Sound Edition" moniker.

Since 2008 the German Promising MusicFind albums on this label label released some of the MPS recordings, but at a very slow pace.

In 2014 the German company Edel AG bought the MPS catalogue from Universal and released a series of 25 MPS albums on CD with a new slipcase graphic design, which brought all those excellent albums back to life. In 2015 Edel AG started to record and release new albums under the MPS moniker. In 2016 Edel AG released a series of 10 classic MPS albums on CD, which were beautifully remastered and re-packaged, presenting the original artwork and liner notes, as well as new liner notes and photographs. An obvious labor of love, these reissues are what the MPS catalogue truly deserves. This project was continued in 2017 with another series of 10 classic MPS albums released on CD. In later years some new reissues were released sporadically.

Over the years many SABA / MPS albums were reissued in Japan, which is often the only available source for these albums today, but that is a story in itself.

DON ELLIS ~ HAIKU
PROMISING MUSIC 44113 (Barcode: 602527326337) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 1973 Released: 2010

The trumpeter / composer / bandleader Don EllisFind albums by this artist was probably the most "progressive" and open-minded American Jazz musician of his time. He experimented with odd meters, World Music / Folklore themes and hired European musicians as members of his ensembles and Big Band. His contacts with Europe were excellent and his friendship with legendary producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist and the German MPSFind albums on this label label led to the release of two of his albums on MPS, when his US label ColumbiaFind albums on this label refused to record his novel ideas. These were sadly among his latest recordings prior to his untimely death just a few years later. This album was a second of the two MPS recordings and contains a beautiful suite for trumpet, Jazz group and orchestra, with ten themes based on ten short Japanese Haiku poems. Ellis plays wonderfully on this album, as do his colleagues: Bulgarian keyboardist Milcho LevievFind albums by this artist, legendary bassist Ray BrownFind albums by this artist, drummer John GuerinFind albums by this artist and guitarists Larry CarltonFind albums by this artist, David CohenFind albums by this artist and Tommy TedescoFind albums by this artist. The music is also wonderful, mostly melodic and gentle, but with the great orchestral arrangements and trumpet solos on top the overall effect is truly gorgeous. In many respects this is "the other side" of Ellis, compared to his highly energetic Big Band albums on Columbia. Brilliant stuff!

PROMISING MUSIC 44114 (Barcode: 602527326238) ~ SWITZERLAND ~ Jazz-World Fusion

This extraordinary album is one of the earliest Jazz-World Fusion excursions, in general and Jazz / Indian music in particular, preceded mainly by the British recording with the Joe HarriottFind albums by this artist / John MayerFind albums by this artist ensembles. This meeting, conceived by the legendary producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist and originally released on the MPSFind albums on this label label, brings together the trio led by the Swiss pianist / composer Irene SchweizerFind albums by this artist, with bassist Uli TrepteFind albums by this artist and drummer Mani NeumeierFind albums by this artist with an Indian trio led by sitar player Dewan MotiharFind albums by this artist, tabla player Keshav SatheFind albums by this artist and tambura player Kusum ThakurFind albums by this artist. Two guest musicians are also present: trumpeter Manfred SchoofFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Barney WilenFind albums by this artist. Contrary to the above mentioned British encounters, which were more about improvising on Indian melodic themes, this meeting is based on Free Jazz, which makes everything much more intense and complex, but also interesting of course. Considering the fact that this music was conceived and recorded 45 years ago emphasizes Berendt´s visionary approach to music and his pivotal role in the development of European Jazz. This is not easy-listening material, but open-minded people will find this fascinating for sure. Not available for decades, this new edition is a momentous event for non-mainstream music. PROMISING MUSIC 44115 (Barcode: 602527615967) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

This is the 4th album on the legendary German MPSFind albums on this label label by US virtuoso violinist / composer Don Sugarcane Harris. His stints with John MayallFind albums by this artist and Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist exposed his name to international Blues and Rock audiences, but his association with MPS placed him in the company of other great violinists during the "Violin Summit" projects run by legendary producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist and established his well deserved reputation as exceptional player, composer and improviser. Harris composed all the music on this album, which is Blues related, but stretches far beyond the basic Blues structures and displays wonderful melodic qualities. He is supported by a great band, which includes keyboardist Dewey TerryFind albums by this artist, bassists Larry TaylorFind albums by this artist and Victor ConteFind albums by this artist, drummer Paul LagosFind albums by this artist and two superb guitarists: Harvey MendelFind albums by this artist and Randy ResnickFind albums by this artist. Saxophonist Richard AplanFind albums by this artist plays on one track. His advanced improvisations take the music beyond the Blues / Blues-Rock settings and turn it into a kind of Blues-Jazz Fusion, completely unique and charming. In retrospect the album lost none of its magic and still sounds fresh and invigorating. Sadly no longer with us, Harris recorded only sporadically after his MPS days, which is a great pity. This is a must to all violin lovers, but every music connoisseur should find something of interest here. Warmly recommended!

Recorded: 1971 Released: 2011

This magnificent album by French virtuoso violinist / composer Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist is a great example of European Jazz at its best. The quintet, which recorded this album was Ponty´s regular group at the time, called ExperienceFind albums by this artist, and comprised of brilliant Belgian guitarist Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, German pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and American rhythm section: bassist Peter WarrenFind albums by this artist and drummer Oliver JohnsonFind albums by this artist. Ponty´s previous MPSFind albums on this label album "Sunday WalkFind albums with this title", recorded 4 years earlier, exposed Ponty´s revolutionary approach to his instrument, but this recording shows how much and how fast he advanced, moving from mainstream Jazz towards much more adventurous surroundings, often including Free, improvised passages. Of course his incredible sense of melody is still present, albeit subtly hidden sometimes. Ponty composed four of the five tunes (the first three are parts of a suite, which occupied Side A of the original LP). The last tune is composed by Kuhn. The playing is phenomenal all the way, both in the more melodic and the completely Free parts, perfectly summarizing the first period of Ponty´s musical journey. Not too long after recording this album Ponty will change his musical direction and create his own admirable brand of Fusion, which will bring him fame and international exposure. But this particular album remains his most notable Jazz achievement. Produced by the legendary Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, this is a must to all European Jazz fans and particularly those who love the violin. A classic!

CECIL TAYLOR ~ FLY! FLY! FLY! FLY! FLY!
PROMISING MUSIC 44117 (Barcode: 602537004287) ~ USA ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

Recorded: 1980 Released: 2012

This is a reissue / remaster of a solo piano album by American Avant-Garde Jazz pianist / composer Cecil TaylorFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight original compositions by Taylor and it was produced by my Friend and Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist. The packaging includes the original liner notes by Berendt which brilliantly emphasize his extraordinary vision of Jazz music. Included also are Taylor insights on the music as well as reflections by German Avant-Garde Jazz pioneer Alexander von SchlippenbachFind albums by this artist.

The music is everything one might expect from Taylor, which is a completely unbounded freedom of Artistic imagination, combined with his own vision of Jazz and music and general. Despite the enormous complexity of the music it is subconsciously melodic, which of course removes the barriers often surrounding Improvised Music / Free Jazz. It is quite obvious that Taylor feels relaxed and fully appreciated in the elegant and respectful circumstances of the legendary MPSFind albums on this label studio in presence of Berendt and the studio owner / recording engineer Hans Georg Brunner-SchwerFind albums by this artist.

It is no wonder that Taylor performed and recorded extensively in Europe, where his Art was wholeheartedly accepted and appreciated. Among his extensive, almost entirely live, discography this studio album stands out as one of the most coherent and concise pieces of music he ever recorded and is one of his most memorable performances.

Overall, this is a precious document of the long-lasting career by one of the bravest and most influential Jazz Avant-Gardists, capturing him at a mid-point of his illustrious recording legacy. This album is an absolute must for the Improvised Music / Free Jazz enthusiasts, and considering the sound quality as well as the concentrated creative effort, it is a true gem of the genre!

STEVE GRAY / GEORGIE FAME / MADELINE BELL ~ SINGER (THE MUSICAL)
PROPER 120 (Barcode: 805520031202) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Pop Fusion

Recorded: 2004 Released: 2014

This is a live recording of the musical co-written by British composer / arranger / pianist Steve GrayFind albums by this artist and Jazz singer / songwriter Georgie FameFind albums by this artist, which was put together in 1985 and debuted in Holland performed by the Dutch Metropole OrchestraFind albums by this artist with the songs performed by Fame and the fabulous American born but resident in UK since the late 1960s vocalist Madeline BellFind albums by this artist. Almost twenty years later (in 2004) Fame and Bell re-joined the orchestra for a repeated performance, which was recorded by the Dutch NTR Radio, to be finally released on record ten years later.

The musical is a collection of fabulous songs, beautifully performed by the two singers and the orchestra and is simply a joy to listen to from start to finish. The music is full of Jazz, Blues and Soul undertones, as usually applied in Fame’s songwriting, and proves that he never wrote a bad song during his long career.

Bell is of course a true Jewel and her strong evocative vocals are some of her best performances to date. She is a perfect partner and balances Fame’s Jazzier approach with her Soul accents.

Overall it is a real shame that this album (and the musical) made as little impact as they did, since the music and the songs are infinitely more elegant and sophisticated then most of the successful Broadway and West End musicals that hit the stage in the last forty years. Oh well, as usual, it was simply too good for its own good.

I wholeheartedly recommend all Fame and Bell fans to grab a copy of this superb album as long as it is still available, as it is definitely a gem not to be missed!

GRAHAM NASH ~ LIVE

This is a live album by legendary British singer / songwriter Graham NashFind albums by this artist, which presents contemporary interpretations of his first two solo albums: “Songs For BeginnersFind albums with this title” (1971) and “Wild TalesFind albums with this title” (1973). All eleven songs from the first album and ten songs from the second album are present in their original order. The album was recorded in 2019 during the Nash US solo tour, on which he performed only these songs, also in their original order.

Nash is accompanied by a formidable set of musicians, which includes guitarist Shane FontayneFind albums by this artist, keyboardist / vocalist Todd CaldwellFind albums by this artist, guitarist / vocalist Thad DeBrockFind albums by this artist, bassist Andy HessFind albums by this artist, drummer Toby CaldwellFind albums by this artist and backing singers Celisse HendersonFind albums by this artist and Grace StumbergFind albums by this artist.

The songs lost absolutely nothing from their original beauty, impact, melodic excellence and intelligent lyrics over the years and are a great reminder of the fact that Nash is one of the greatest songwriters of all times. His vocal abilities are completely intact and his presentation is sublime, as always.

Overall, this is a superb reminder of the fact that music used to be great years ago, and some of its creators are still around to make us remember. These are some of the most beautiful Classic Rock songs ever written, and although Nash left Britain and settled in the US, where his music mates were / are living, he could never take out the “Britishness” out of his songwriting and singing, which was always as charming as humanly possible. This is absolute musical magic!

SVANTE SODERQVIST ~ ARRIVAL

This is the debut album as a leader by Swedish bassist / cellist / vocalist / composer Svante SoderqvistFind albums by this artist recorded in a trio setting with pianist Adam ForkelidFind albums by this artist and drummer Calle RasmussonFind albums by this artist. Polish Jazz violinist Adam BaldychFind albums by this artist guests on two tracks and vocalist Maria WinterFind albums by this artist on one. The album presents ten pieces, nine of which are original compositions by Soderqvist and one is an interpretation of a song by Stevie WanderFind albums by this artist.

The music is all strictly melodic mainstream Jazz, definitely on the lighter side of the spectrum, but the compositions are all solid and coherent and offer an opportunity for the leader to show his chops as a bassist and cellist. His vocalese singing of the melody lines is however a bit simplistic, but overall fits the mood of the proceedings.

Forkelid plays excellent piano lines and confirms his status as formidable pianist known from his other recordings. Rasmusson drives the music forward with precision and respectful distance.

The two tracks featuring Baldych are the highlights of the album and both are closer to the Jazz spirit then almost all the other pieces which combine Folklore / Pop / Classical Music influences. Baldych delivers fiery solos, as expected.

Overall this is a very mellow, pleasant album offering melodic content executed splendidly by the participants, which should satisfy a wide audience of listeners, who are enjoying the more entertaining facet of Jazz. Combined with the excellent sound quality this album is definitely great fun to listen to.

ORJAN HULTEN / ORION ~ SHIFTING GROUND
PROPHONE 308 (Barcode: 822359003309) ~ SWEDEN ~ Jazz

This is the sixth album by Swedish Jazz saxophonist / composer Orjan HultenFind albums by this artist, recorded with his quartet called OrionFind albums by this artist, which includes also pianist Torbjorn GulzFind albums by this artist, bassist Filip AugustsonFind albums by this artist and drummer Peter DanemoFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight original compositions, one by Hulten, two by Gulz, three by Augustson and two by Danemo.

The music is all within modern mainstream Jazz, based on solid, mostly very lyrical and melodic compositions, elegantly performed by the quartet. The “democratic” decision to allow all members of the quartet to offer their compositions pays off, as those are of the highest standard.

The performances are also excellent, with Hulten displaying his highly polished saxophone fluidity, Gulz full of melancholy and tender piano phrasing and the rhythm section being highly supportive at all times.

Overall, this is a very pleasant, elegant and delicate album, almost romantic at times, which offers a great listening experience away from the noise and tumult that surrounds us most of the time. With the excellent sound quality and superb performances, it is an island of sanity and pure unadulterated satisfaction. Well done!

ANDY MIDDLETON ~ BETWEEN WORLDS
PROVA 14 (Barcode: 9008798037513) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2008 Released: 2010

This is an album by American (resident in Austria) saxophonist / composer Andy MiddletonFind albums by this artist, recorded in a quartet setting with German pianist Tino DeradoFind albums by this artist, American (resident in Germany) bassist Paul ImmFind albums by this artist and American drummer Alan JonesFind albums by this artist. The album presents ten tracks, all of which are original compositions by the leader.

The album’s title refers to Middleton’s move to Vienna and the period of transition between countries, people, cultures, etc. that all emigrants, and Artists in particular, go through in their lives, when making a leap, although as far as I know this was a move “in the right direction” for him, with Vienna becoming his new happy habitat. We are Friends since some years, and he always felt way more a European than an American to me, also on the musical plateau.

The music is beautifully melodic, and the classic quartet setting is an ideal environment to express the lyricism of the compositions and allow the leader to improvise extensively, which he does with passion. All the members of the quartet are seasoned musicians, which is immediately apparent, and the music offers a marvelous flow, despite some complex time signatures and non-trivial harmonics. This is modern Jazz at its best and to me it sound way more European than what I can hear from across the pond.

Overall, this is a wonderful album, in a classic Jazz quartet setting with excellent compositions and superb musicianship, so what else can one ask for? Well, perhaps it’s high time for some new recordings from you, my Friend!

COLIN TOWNS ~ BOLT FROM THE BLUE
PROVOCATEUR 1012 (Barcode: 5019148613398) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1990 - 1991 Released: 1991

The music scene is surely one of the greatest sources of unexpected surprises. The case of keyboardist / composer / arranger / bandleader Colin TownsFind albums by this artist is really an excellent example of strange metamorphoses that occur in the world of music. Take a man, who was the keyboards player and composer for the Ian Gillan BandFind albums by this artist, one of Britain’s most notorious rockers of the early 1970s, transport him 20 years forward and you get one of Britain’s most famous TV and Film composers. As if this wasn’t enough, the same person also has ambitions to become a Jazz composer and actually assembles a big band, which he calls the Mask OrchestraFind albums by this artist, writes a collection of Jazz compositions, arranges and records them and eventually releases an album on his own label, called ProvocateurFind albums on this label Records, which boldly states as it slogan: “Improvise not Compromise”. Now that’s something that truly deserves to be called a chutzpah! The amazing part of all this is that it not only works, but actually works wonders. Towns’ debut recording with his ensemble is a majestic piece of music, refreshing and illuminating, continuing the Ellingtonian tradition of big band Jazz composition and at the same time invigorating that tradition, taking it up to contemporary standards. The Mask Orchestra is a dreamy assemblage of some of Britain’s most illustrious veteran Jazz instrumentalist, like John SurmanFind albums by this artist, Peter KingFind albums by this artist and Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist (saxophone), Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist and Derek WatkinsFind albums by this artist (trumpet), John TaylorFind albums by this artist (piano) and Dave GreenFind albums by this artist (bass), together with some superb younger players of the second generation like Guy BarkerFind albums by this artist (trumpet) or Clark TraceyFind albums by this artist (drums). These players can play anything, regardless how complex or demanding the actual score is. And play they do – like there’s no tomorrow. It is difficult to imagine this music without actually hearing it, believe you me. Nothing compares to the power, multiplicity of sounds and harmonies, overwhelming euphoria and ecstasy of sound, like music performed by a great big band. Although this music was recorded almost 20 years ago, it lost absolutely nothing of its power and beauty, as well as element of surprise. It is almost impossible to believe that is a debut recording, but apparently miracles do happen, even in music. If you can lay your hands on this album, grab it, which won’t be easy as it is currently out of print, hopefully not for long. Gorgeous and essential stuff, deserving all the praise it received at the time of its release and certainly a superb document of the British Jazz scene, which apparently still has a few tricks hidden up in its sleeve.

COLIN TOWNS ~ NOWHERE & HEAVEN
PROVOCATEUR 1013 (Barcode: 5029152801322) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1996 Released: 1996

British keyboardist / composer / arranger / bandleader Colin TownsFind albums by this artist presents his 2nd large scale Jazz project on this album, released on his record label ProvocateurFind albums on this label Records. Five years after his previous release, which was a great surprise and a stunning example of modern big band Jazz music, Towns takes the listener even further into the realm of orchestral Jazz, with an ambitious and complex piece of music, performed by his Mask Orchestra, which includes some of the best Jazz players in Britain, such as Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist (saxophone), Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist and Guy BarkerFind albums by this artist (trumpet) and Clark TraceyFind albums by this artist (drums). But the greatest surprise on the album is the presence of Italian singer Maria Pia De VitoFind albums by this artist, who delivers some remarkable vocal parts, cleverly incorporated into the music, often taking the music places previously unexplored. Incorporating vocal parts into large scale orchestral Jazz is not new in the British Jazz tradition and has been previously used during the golden age of the late 1960s / 1970s by composers like Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist, Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist and others. I suppose Towns is familiar with these examples and I’m happy to see him creating an up-to-date example of this compositional device. The music is truly grand, rich and sophisticated; somewhat similar to Classical Music at times, but more dynamic and of course retaining the element of swing, which clearly keeps the music well inside the overall framework of Jazz. Perfect performances, with many splendid solo parts and the fantastic sound quality all contribute to the success of this album, which deserves a worthy place in the Pantheon of the valued British Jazz tradition. Although requiring attentive listening, patience and open-mindedness, this music is richly rewarding and holds many intellectual as well as emotional qualities, which should keep all Jazz lovers happy. Wholeheartedly recommended!

COLIN TOWNS / MARIA PIA DE VITO ~ STILL LIFE
PROVOCATEUR 1015 (Barcode: 5019148619420) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1998 Released: 1998

British keyboardist / composer / arranger / bandleader Colin TownsFind albums by this artist is most commonly associated with his work for and with Jazz big bands, like his Mask OrchestraFind albums by this artist or the German NDR Big BandFind albums by this artist, but this album presents a different aspect of his work. Towns wrote ten intriguing compositions, of which nine are “songs” (i.e. include lyrics also written by him) and the entire cycle is preformed by an instrumental quintet (called not surprisingly Mask QuintetFind albums by this artist), fronted by the gorgeous Italian vocalist Maria Pia De Vito. The quintet members include, in addition to Towns who plays keyboards, some of his regular cohorts and members of his ensembles: saxophonist Julian ArgüellesFind albums by this artist, guitarist John ParricelliFind albums by this artist, bassist Dudley PhillipsFind albums by this artist and drummer Ralph SalminsFind albums by this artist. For lovers of modern vocal Jazz this album is a Godsend, as it presents a whole new outlook on the art of writing for vocals as well as vocal approach, rather than trying to use yet again some of the vocal Jazz standards, which often have been already abused to death. These are beautiful, intricate and highly intelligent compositions, using a wide palette of Jazz compositional structures, incorporating some World Music influences. De Vito performs these splendid songs with grace, deep musicality and unprecedented open-mindedness, creating a truly magnificent offering. Her crystal-clear voice, incredible range and above all sensitivity assure her position as one of the most important contemporary Jazz vocalists. Of course the instrumentalists accompanying her also contribute to this album’s success, playing impeccably and delicately not to overshadow her vocal parts. Towns’ cooperation with De Vito goes hand in hand with his work with the legendary British singer Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist, as documented on other ProvocateurFind albums on this label Records releases. In many respects De Vito could be considered as an admirable younger “sister” of Norma’s, both of them sharing rare qualities and individual approach to Jazz vocals, which is extremely rare. The album is quite an experience and I had an absolutely marvelous time listening to it, surprised time and time again both by the music and the execution. I dare everybody to try it!

His extensive discography recorded over the years proves his status as one of Britain’s foremost instrumentalists beyond a shadow of a doubt. Sheppard has a rare talent of combining beautiful melodies and expanded improvisation is a way that makes his music accessible to a relatively large audience on one hand, but remains intellectually challenging on the other. He is also extremely versatile and open-minded, always ready to combine in his music the Jazz tradition with other elements like World Music, electronics and even club culture. In 1998 Sheppard joined the roster of the prestigious British ProvocateurFind albums on this label Records label, and released a series of landmark recordings on that label in the following years. For this, his debut recording on Provocateur, Sheppard formed a quintet which included some of his faithful cohorts from the past, as well as new players: John ParricelliFind albums by this artist – guitar, Steve LodderFind albums by this artist – keyboards, veteran bass player Chris LaurenceFind albums by this artist and percussionist Paul ClarvisFind albums by this artist. Tabla player Shalda SahaiFind albums by this artist is added on three tracks. Sheppard composed all the music, which is mostly low-key and lyrical, beautifully melodic and sometimes even sentimental (in a positive way of course). His soprano saxophone lures the listener like the Pied Piper of Hamelin, being extremely addictive. COLIN TOWNS ~ DREAMING MAN WITH BLUE SUEDE SHOES
PROVOCATEUR 1017 (Barcode: 5038491000013) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 1997 - 1998 Released: 1999

British pianist / composer / arranger / bandleader Colin TownsFind albums by this artist is a true Renaissance musician, active in many different fields of musical activity. Extremely prolific, his accumulated body of work as a composer includes a vast number of highly regarded scores for cinema and television as well as Jazz compositions, mostly for the big band format. In 1996 Towns founded his own record label, called ProvocateurFind albums on this label Records, which is his main outlet to present his Jazz-oriented work and which in time firmly established a position of one of the most prestigious and interesting European record labels. His main vehicle for recording Jazz is his ensemble called Mask OrchestraFind albums by this artist, but he also works closely with the excellent German NDR Big BandFind albums by this artist in Hamburg. In retrospect I’d say that Towns’ work provides the perfect bridge (or the missing link) between the golden age of British Jazz in the late 1960s / 1970s and today. This is reflected by many aspects of his music, such as his complete disregard of normative mainstream Jazz forms, his constant effort to innovate and cover new ground and even by the fact that his ensembles include some of the legendary players of the golden age as well as representatives of the second and third generation of British Jazz musicians. This stunning album presents Towns and his work at their full glory. It is an extended piece, similar to the symphonic suite form established in Classical Music, which can be considered as a Symphonic Jazz suite. Towns expands his Mask Orchestra into a 70-piece orchestra, which he calls Mask SymphonicFind albums by this artist, using the Jazz big band and an adding an entire symphonic orchestra. In complete contrast to several previous attempts of this nature, in this case the entire orchestra functions as a completely integrated and organic musical body rather than Jazz vs. Classical ensembles, which completely fail to complement each other. The music is simply magnificent, deeply melodic and highly intelligent, with sublime arrangements and perfect atmospheric treatment, flowing seamlessly from one theme to the next, and when the album reaches its end the listener is left lingering with a strong desire for more. Towns uses the entire palette at the disposal of a composer, both the orchestral and instrumental solo parts and in this case also vocal parts, beautifully performed by the divine Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist and Italian singer Maria Pia De VitoFind albums by this artist. The players include such veteran lions as Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist (trumpet), Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist and Peter KingFind albums by this artist (saxophone) and Frank RicottiFind albums by this artist (percussion), but all of the performers are truly first class. In short this is an exhilarating musical experience of deep significance and lasting cultural value. Essential!

ALAN SKIDMORE ~ THE CALL
PROVOCATEUR 1018 (Barcode: 5038491000037) ~ UK ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1999 Released: 1999

Legendary British saxophonist / composer Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist is one of the pivotal players on the modern British Jazz scene. His immense contribution to the development of the scene is well documented on his numerous recordings as a leader and sidemen in the late 1960s / 1970s and his position in the Pantheon of British Jazz is fully earned. Skidmore is one of the relatively few heroes of the British Jazz revolution to continue an active and successful career through the years, which also included recording of new albums periodically, keeping him constantly in the public eye (or rather ear). This album also reveals Skidmore’s open-mindedness and respect towards cultures and music other than Jazz, constituting a splendid example of contemporary Jazz-World Fusion. During his 1994 stay in South Africa Skidmore met the local drums / percussion ensemble AmampondoFind albums by this artist and fell in love with their music. Five years later he actually fulfilled his dream to record an album with Amampondo, which was recorded in South Africa and includes also Colin TownsFind albums by this artist on keyboards. Some overdubbing was later added to the original recording in the UK, which features Steve MellingFind albums by this artist (piano), Arnie SomogyiFind albums by this artist (bass) and Gary HusbandFind albums by this artist (drums). Skidmore plays incredibly on this album. His tone and vigor completely untouched by time and his improvisational powers at their peak, resembling as always those of John ColtraneFind albums by this artist. In fact it almost jumps out of this music that Coltrane would have probably recorded a similar album if he lived, as he was often researching and absorbing the African roots of Jazz prior to his untimely death. This realization adds another dimension to this sublime music, a prophetic one in that. In all respects this is one of the best Jazz-World Fusion albums I’ve ever heard and surely one I’ve probably enjoyed the most. Skidmore’s saxophone improvisations backed up by the African percussion merge perfectly into a new amalgam, which sounds and feels completely natural and coherent. His virtuoso performances are dazzling, but never flashy or overbearing – just exactly right for each moment. Skidmore again proves to his listeners that he is a Master with unmatched quality and talent. This album deserves to be listened to by every Jazz lover on this planet and embodies an essential recording of human Culture, transcending race, backgrounds and traditions and pointing clearly to the future of music.

MARIA PIA DE VITO / JOHN TAYLOR / RALPH TOWNER ~ VERSO
PROVOCATEUR 1023 (Barcode: 5038491102328) ~ ITALY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2000 Released: 2000

Italian singer / composer / arranger Maria Pia De VitoFind albums by this artist, British pianist / composer John TaylorFind albums by this artist and American guitarist / composer Ralph TownerFind albums by this artist met by accident, but we all know that some of the best things in music (and not only in music) happen quite by accident. Born in Naples, De Vito is classically trained but spends most of her time on the Jazz scene, both locally in Italy and also all over Europe, performing and recording with some of the best Jazz musicians. This is her fifth album.

Taylor and Towner need no introduction; both with extensive careers behind them and both being among the most highly esteemed contemporary Jazz personalities. Together the trio presents everything that characterizes European Jazz: sophistication, subtlety, intelligence and lyricism.

The all-original music they perform was written by Taylor and Towner, with De Vito contributing lyrics to some of the tracks. She sings both lyrics and vocalese, with exceptionally clear voice and unique expressionism, which is both enchanting and captivating.

The music moves constantly between solo, duo and trio parts, changing moods and tempi. As much of contemporary European Jazz, the music fluctuates somewhere between Jazz and contemporary Classical, making the attempt to label it completely redundant. It is simply great music, which is performed with exquisite taste and virtuosity. Since the album is entirely acoustic, it is of course low-key and requires attentive listening to capture all the beautiful little details. The superb recording quality helps a lot in this case and listeners addicted to the “ECMFind albums on this label sound” will love this recording unconditionally. A must to all lovers of vocal Jazz and contemporary European Jazz.

The virtuosity of the musicians is obvious every step of the way and their rapport phenomenal. MICHAEL GIBBS ~ NONSEQUENCE
PROVOCATEUR 1027 (Barcode: 5038491102724) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2001 Released: 2001

British composer / arranger / bandleader Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist is one of the pillars of modern British Jazz. His outstanding 1970s recordings serve as musical milestones in the development of Jazz and Jazz-Rock Fusion composition and his bands of the period, which always included some of the best players on the scene, are remarkable achievements remembered and cherished to this very day. After the decline of the British Jazz scene Gibbs returned to the US, where he concentrated on teaching and composing works for many different media (TV, cinema, performances and concerts) in a variety of musical genres, including of course Jazz and contemporary Classical Music. Although many of his compositions were released as soundtrack albums, he recorded only three “real” / dedicated Jazz albums in the last 30 years. Therefore his new album on ProvocateurFind albums on this label Records is a major event and a delight for his many fans and admirers. The album presents an ambitious project involving a recording on two continents (Hamburg and New York) by two big ensembles (the NDR Big BandFind albums by this artist in Hamburg and a specially assembled band in NY), presenting music mostly written by Gibbs with just a few of his unique arrangements of compositions by other composers. The NY band includes some of the most illustrious names on the contemporary Jazz scene, like Lew SoloffFind albums by this artist and Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist (trumpet), Chris HunterFind albums by this artist and Alex FosterFind albums by this artist (saxophone), Hiram BullockFind albums by this artist (guitar) and Steve SwallowFind albums by this artist (bass) among others. The NDR Big Band includes many marvelous players, but most notably saxophonist Christof LauerFind albums by this artist and pianist Wladyslaw SendeckiFind albums by this artist. The music is everything one might expect from Gibbs – marvelously melodic, beautifully crafted, devilishly cleverly arranged and superbly executed by both ensembles. Gibbs skillfully gets the best out of the big band setting, using the incredible dynamics it allows for and interposing multi-layered harmonic and rhythmic structures against each other to achieve an incredibly dramatic effect. Several excellent solo parts ornament the album like cherries on a cake and the different moods and tempi never allow for even a brief dull moment. The music reflects perfectly the composer’s versatility and open-mindedness, which have always been his forte. This is one refreshing and delightful musical experience that I’d hate my friends to miss; so nothing else remains to be said other that recommending this album wholeheartedly. You won’t regret it!

ANDY SHEPPARD ~ NOCTURNAL TOURIST
PROVOCATEUR 1029 (Barcode: 5038491102922) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2001 Released: 2001

British saxophonist / composer Andy SheppardFind albums by this artist takes a bold step into creating a one-man-show concept album, which is a big step away from his usual subject matter as a mainstream Jazz musician. Playing several instruments (saxophones, keyboards, guitar and synthesizers) and accompanied only by French drummer / percussionist Stephane San JuanFind albums by this artist, Sheppard brilliantly employs also an array of studio wizardry, using samples, pre-recorded background sounds, fragments of recorded conversation, lops, etc., all these to create a very interesting collage of sounds, on top of which he improvises. His highly developed sense of melody prevails of course and his improvisations are kept strictly within the melody lines. Nevertheless the overall effect of this music is quite fascinating, as it presents another way to expand the Jazz idiom into new and contemporary vistas. Although some Jazz purists might shrug about this music, let’s make no mistake here – it is still good music, even if unconventional in the traditional Jazz aspect. As a matter of fact this album might serve as a perfect tool to introduce many listeners to Jazz, especially the younger generation. Comparing this music with many lounge and ambient projects created in the last decade, the result will still place this album way above other efforts. I had a lot of fun listening to this and quite a few surprises along the way. Definitely worth checking out!

Her two faithful companions on the previous album: British pianist John TaylorFind albums by this artist and US guitarist Ralph TownerFind albums by this artist are back with her again, but this time the instrumental ensemble is expanded to a quartet with the participation of legendary US bassist Steve SwallowFind albums by this artist and French drummer / percussionist Patrice HeralFind albums by this artist.

The music, composed by De Vito, Taylor, Towner and Swallow, is beautifully minimalist and quite complex, providing an ideal vehicle for the singer’s vocal explorations. She uses lyrics and vocalese interchangeably, with a rare ability to sound perfectly right at each given moment. The written music is but a frame for hers and the musicians’ improvisations, which keep floating effortlessly. De Vito continues in her singing the modern European vocal Jazz tradition, initiated in the 1970s by singers like Urszula DudziakFind albums by this artist, Lauren NewtonFind albums by this artist and Jeanne LeeFind albums by this artist (Vocal SummitFind albums by this artist), but of course this tradition is brought up-to-date and her personal input is dominant.

The album is a beautiful collection of highly sensitive, lyrical music, which captures the listener totally and requires his total dedication. Most importantly it keeps the process of exploration, as far as vocal Jazz is concerned, alive, rather than following the “easy” path of yet another attempt at vocal Jazz standards. Listening to this album one realizes that vocal Jazz is still alive and kicking, a relief indeed, and has a lot of fascinating innovations to offer. Don’t even think twice!

NORTHERN LIGHTS ~ AIRPLAY
PROVOCATEUR 1032 (Barcode: 5038491103226) ~ UK ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2002 Released: 2002

The Northern LightsFind albums by this artist ensemble is a collaboration between the legendary British trombonist / composer Annie WhiteheadFind albums by this artist and concertina player / composer Alistair AndersonFind albums by this artist. Together with Chris StoutFind albums by this artist (violin), Ian MaidmanFind albums by this artist (guitar) and Liam GenockeyFind albums by this artist (drums), the quintet performs some great music composed and co-composed by Whitehead and Anderson, which is a lovely tribute to the Celtic folk, spiced and ornamented with Jazz rhythms and improvisations. This delicate acoustic music flows gently like a country stream, glimmering with joy and crying with melancholy. The music is truly beautiful, moving between the folksy and the Jazzy parts with ease and elegance. All players display obvious virtuosity on their respective instruments, and the overall effect is simply charming. This is a splendid example of Jazz-World Fusion, with neither of the respective genres suffering from the effects of being joined together. Definitely worth investigating.

JULIAN ARGÜELLES ~ AS ABOVE SO BELOW
PROVOCATEUR 1033 (Barcode: 5038491103325) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 2002 Released: 2003

British saxophonist / composer Julian ArgüellesFind albums by this artist is considered as one of the most prominent representatives of the second generation of British Jazz musicians. A brilliant player and gifted composer, he first came to prominence as a member of the legendary Loose TubesFind albums by this artist ensemble. He recorded albums since the 1990s and toured widely with his own groups as well as with other prominent British (including the Colin TownsFind albums by this artist Mask OrchestraFind albums by this artist), European and American Jazz artists. This album, his second on the prestigious ProvocateurFind albums on this label label (and 6th as a leader), was recorded with a splendid octet, which includes both young British Jazz players and seasoned veterans, including Stan SulzmannFind albums by this artist (sax) and Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist (trumpet), and a 20-piece string ensemble. The music is a beautiful synthesis of Jazz and contemporary Classical Music that is surely Julian’s most ambitious and far-reaching work as a composer. The tranquil and contemplative themes are splendidly orchestrated and the octet performs in perfect harmony with the string ensemble. Deeply moving and uplifting, this music combines formal musical structures and improvisation in a most elegant way. Serious Jazz connoisseurs as well as those who love Classical Music are both for a treat. This is worthy addition to any serious Jazz album collection and wholeheartedly recommended.

ANDY SHEPPARD / JOHN PARRICELLI ~ P.S.
PROVOCATEUR 1034 (Barcode: 5038491103424) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2003 Released: 2003

British saxophonist / composer Andy SheppardFind albums by this artist and his partner guitarist / composer John ParricelliFind albums by this artist are both household names on the contemporary British Jazz scene. They have collaborated many times before recording this duo album, which documents perfectly their mutual admiration and respect for each other’s talents. They both contributed equally from their respective songbooks and added one co-composed tune to round things up. The music is very intimate, as appropriate for a duo recording, with mostly lyrical content. The cooperation and interplay is perfect in every sense and the tempi vary from classic Jazz, Latin and even African rhythmic patterns. Parricelli plays both the acoustic and electric guitars and Sheppard plays both the tenor and soprano saxophones, so between the two of them there is certainly enough variety to keep the listener hooked and enchanted. The overall atmosphere is similar to many ECMFind albums on this label recordings, where silence and space are equally important as are the actual sounds played. Enthusiasts of that kind of subdued and restrained emotionality will absolutely love this album. Definitely worth checking out!

ALAN SKIDMORE / UBIZO ~ UBIZO
PROVOCATEUR 1036 (Barcode: 5038491103622) ~ UK ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2002 Released: 2003

Following the recording of the sensational “The CallFind albums with this title” album, legendary British saxophonist / composer Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist reunited again with the South African ensemble AmampondoFind albums by this artist and created the group UbizoFind albums by this artist, adding a few other British Jazz musicians. This album documents the group’s music, which is a direct continuation of the tremendous success achieved on the previous album. This time the group presents a slightly different balance between Jazz and Folklore, as the “Jazz section” is strengthened by the addition of trumpeter Ingolf BurkhardtFind albums by this artist (from the NDR Big BandFind albums by this artist). Other players include Colin TownsFind albums by this artist (keyboards), Steve MellingFind albums by this artist (piano) and Arnie SomogyiFind albums by this artist (bass), who played on the previous album, and Stephen KeoghFind albums by this artist on drums. The music includes compositions by Skidmore, Towns and of course by members of Amampondo, as well as arrangements of traditional South African music. The overall balance between Jazz and Folklore is absolutely perfect, creating a superb Jazz-World Fusion, as it should be. British Jazz aficionados should remember Skidmore’s participation in Chris McGregorFind albums by this artist’s Brotherhood Of BreathFind albums by this artist some 30 years earlier, which also blended South African music and Jazz. It is quite interesting to compare this recording with the BOB ones and observe the process of maturity and refining that occurred in the meantime. The raw power and wildness (in search of musical and not only freedom) is replaced here by moderation and sophistication. Yes, we are all getting older, no doubt, but this does not affect Skidmore’s playing, which is exceptional, like always. His tone and improvisational skills are a symbol of (spiritual) youth and his Coltranesque explorations remain equal to none. I only hope Skidmore will continue to record his superb music for many years to come. Delightful!

NORMA WINSTONE ~ IT`S LATER THAN YOU THINK
PROVOCATEUR 1037 (Barcode: 5038491103721) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2004 Released: 2006

British singer Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist has been my favorite Jazz singer for almost 40 years now, ever since I heard her performing in the late 1960s in the midst of the burgeoning British Jazz scene at the time. I always followed her extraordinary career closely and of course collected all her recordings, which in retrospect constitute a massive body of marvelous music. At the peak of the British Jazz scene in the late 1960s – 1970s she sang with the best: Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist, Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist, Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist, John SurmanFind albums by this artist and many others, contributing not only her extraordinary vocal performances but also her talent as a lyricist. With the decline of the local scene she continued on the European scene, both as a soloist and with the trio AzimuthFind albums by this artist (with her husband, pianist John TaylorFind albums by this artist and trumpeter Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist). She is an enormously versatile performer, feeling at ease in any environment, from classic Jazz standards to Avant-Garde explorations. I always found her to be the most sensitive, highly musical and open-minded interpreter of both the music and the lyrics, which turn everything she touches into High Art. Happily for the music lovers, her talent and abilities seem to be untouched by time and she’s able to deliver her best up to this very day, which is well documented on this album as well. Accompanied by the splendid NDR Big BandFind albums by this artist (Northern German Radio Big Band resident in Hamburg), one of the best Jazz Big Bands in the world today, Norma delivers a wonderful set of songs, all brilliantly arranged by Colin TownsFind albums by this artist, who also conducted the band. The choice of material is fascinating and quite challenging as well, as Norma performs songs written by such dissimilar composers as Joni MitchellFind albums by this artist, Leonard CohenFind albums by this artist, Randy NewmanFind albums by this artist and Jaco PastoriusFind albums by this artist. Her highly personal delivery and the beautiful arrangements metamorphose these songs into completely new musical vistas, to the delight of any sensitive listener. The Big Band is used intelligently and skillfully, to serve as a perfect companion to her vocal delivery, without being overwhelming, in spite of its inherent might. The musicians are all virtuosi and highly experienced soloists, which is clearly evident from the instrumental solos, and include such renowned Jazz musicians as saxophonist Christof LauerFind albums by this artist and pianist (and my dear friend of Polish origin) Wladyslaw SendeckiFind albums by this artist. The recording and sound quality are stunning and resemble the sonic excellence of other European labels like ECMFind albums on this label Records. For me this is a great example of a perfect album – the music, the musicians and a voice of a Diva – what else can one ask for? Essential food for the soul.

COLIN TOWNS ~ LEND ME YOUR EARS
PROVOCATEUR 1038 (Barcode: 5038491103820) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2005 - 2006 Released: 2006

British pianist / composer / arranger / bandleader Colin TownsFind albums by this artist, one the most talented and prolific European Jazz composers, cooperates often with Europe’s premiere Jazz orchestra, the German NDR Big BandFind albums by this artist from Hamburg. This album presents a series of original compositions by Towns, written especially for the NDR Big Band and performed by it. Having at his disposal such esteemed and well trained group of musicians, Towns is able to stretch his compositional and arranging skill to the limit, creating some of the most magnificent big band music ever recorded. The music covers a vast musical panorama, from exotic World Music influences, via chamber pieces and even electronics. Brilliantly performed (and superbly recorded), this is a beautiful example of music, which is fresh, intelligent and innovative, dazzling with its intricacy and moving with its melodic lyricism. The compositions include a six-part Jazz suite dedicated to and featuring the talents of Polish pianist Wladyslaw SendeckiFind albums by this artist, who is the NDR Big Band’s resident pianist. There is ample space for some superb solos by the band’s members, including saxophonist Christof LauerFind albums by this artist, one of Europe’s most distinguished players today. I can hardly imagine a more perfect big band recording, which is an instant classic and a superb example of the Jazz Art Form, something that should inspire and educate other Jazz composers and arrangers and set an example for others to study. It is, after all, a collection of the entire Jazz vocabulary harmonically, stylistically and historically. Well-trained listeners should have no trouble hearing shades of New Orleans marching bands, Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist’s masterly compositions and Gil EvansFind albums by this artist’ pioneering orchestrations, mind you subtle shadows as in smiling Angels watching over Towns, never imitations or plagiarism so often heard in other big band efforts. If it was up to me I’d have made this album a compulsory learning tool for every Jazz student, but alas this is beyond my powers. I still can, however, recommend this beauty to every connoisseur of truly great music - Jazz included. As I already said – a true classic!

WLADYSLAW SENDECKI ~ PIANO
PROVOCATEUR 1039 (Barcode: 5038491103929) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2007 Released: 2007

Polish pianist / composer Wladyslaw SendeckiFind albums by this artist is one of the finest representatives of European Jazz. As a child prodigy he started his classical studies at the age of 11 and performances at the age of 15. Once he discovered Jazz, his passion for music concentrated in this field and he became involved with the Polish Jazz scene, playing piano in famous Polish groups like Extra BallFind albums by this artist and Sun ShipFind albums by this artist, both of which pioneered the Polish Jazz-Rock Fusion movement. In 1981 Sendecki left Poland (as did many gifted musicians at the time) first to Sweden and later settled in Switzerland. In 1990 he moved to Germany (Hamburg) and took the resident piano chair with the excellent NDR Big BandFind albums by this artist. He played with other Polish expatriates (Leszek ZadloFind albums by this artist, Bronislaw SuchanekFind albums by this artist and Janusz StefanskiFind albums by this artist) in the Polski Jazz EnsembleFind albums by this artist, which also visited Israel by my invitation. This beautiful piano solo album was recorded 20 years after his last recording as a leader and is a most welcome return and a great opportunity for new listeners to get exposed to his great talent. He composed most of the music, including the three parts suite dedicated to painter Marc Chagall and the Art of painting. Three pieces by other composers are also included, reflecting his love of music by other talented composers. The album is an absolutely stunning piece of music, performed with virtuosity and deep musical sensitivity. Sendecki keeps his brilliant technique “in check”, not letting it overshadow his delicate and impressive improvisational exploits. For well-trained listeners, the Polish musical tradition, especially the piano legacy of Frederic ChopinFind albums by this artist, is quite evident (Chopin’s romanticism and soul-searching qualities influence all Polish piano players to this very day). The music flows beautifully from one piece to another and for me it was all over much too soon, which means it will be played again many a time. The sound quality of the album is (not surprisingly) excellent, as all the other recordings on the ProvocateurFind albums on this label label. Piano lovers, Jazz lovers or just plain music enthusiasts should find plenty of content here and even if the Artist’s name is completely unfamiliar to them, it is absolutely worth investigating. I for one am proud to have such a superb musician for a friend. Hopefully we won’t have to wait for 20 years to enjoy another album of his.

Recorded: 2008 Released: 2008

3rd album by British saxophonist / composer Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist and his African Music ensemble UbizoFind albums by this artist, which combines European Jazz musicians with African ethnic players. The album’s title celebrates Skidmore’s 50 years as a Jazz musician, one of the most illustrious careers on the British Jazz scene. The music is a beautiful amalgam of modern Jazz and ethnic elements, which Skidmore and his group have been exploring for the last few years. This version of Ubizo includes such gifted players as Ingolf BurkhardtFind albums by this artist (trumpet), Steve MellingFind albums by this artist and Colin TownsFind albums by this artist (keyboards) and Neville MalcolmFind albums by this artist (bass), alongside the African players, who play a plethora of folklore instruments. This album is slightly more oriented towards the ethnic elements, with relatively short tracks, but the scope and the beauty of the music is breathtaking. The Jazz elements are of course still strongly manifested, especially in view of the two John ColtraneFind albums by this artist compositions included, with spectacular solos by Skidmore. Overall this is another masterpiece of Jazz-World Fusion, with great music from start to finish, proving that music does not have to be somber and gloomy to be intelligent and rewarding. COLIN TOWNS ~ THE ORPHEUS SUITE
PROVOCATEUR 2004 (Barcode: 5038491200420) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2004 Released: 2004

British pianist / composer / arranger / bandleader Colin TownsFind albums by this artist, one the most talented and prolific European Jazz composers, is renown for his work in a variety of musical settings, which include cinema, TV and Jazz big band. Therefore it is no surprise that the Birmingham Royal Ballet would commission Towns to compose a suite, to be used as the accompaniment for the ballet’s performance. The composer stood up to the challenge admirably, as documented on this album. The music, inspired by the Greek mythological hero Orpheus, is performed by Towns’ Mask OrchestraFind albums by this artist, which includes an expanded percussion section allowing a more rhythmic emphasis in the music. Although intended for the ballet, the music stands perfectly on its own and is able to inspire and touch the listener even without the visual counterpart. The separate pieces of the suite differ from each other in many respects, but sustain a feeling of continuity and conceptual unity. Slightly more percussive at times than Towns’ usual compositions (as appropriate for modern dance) some of the parts are also beautifully melancholic, creating a stunningly dramatic atmosphere of the entire suite. The music is quite complex, presenting the band with challenging obstacles, but the experienced and talented musicians of this caliber conquer the difficulty with flying colors. Distinguished soloist like Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist and Peter KingFind albums by this artist (saxophone) and Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist (trumpet), along with younger but highly skilled players in the band deliver an all round excellent performance. The album includes a bonus track, which was considered, but eventually not included in the ballet performance. All in all this is another momentous achievement for Towns and his band, worthy of an honorable place in any serious Jazz music collection. On a side note, I wonder if the tragic fate of Orpheus, a poet and musician, who tried to cheat death using his artistic skills and perished himself in the process, is not a metaphor one can easily apply to artists even in our times. After all Orpheus did achieve immortality, even if only as a myth, so perhaps the role of all artists lies primarily with whatever is left as their legacy, by which they will be remembered?

LESLIE WEST ~ GOT BLOOZE
PROVOGUE 7155 (Barcode: 8712725715528) ~ USA ~ Blues-Rock

Recorded: 2005 Released: 2005

Legendary guitarist Leslie WestFind albums by this artist is best known as the leader of MountainFind albums by this artist, America’s answer to the UK power trio CreamFind albums by this artist. Mountain recorded a series of excellent albums in the late 1960s and early 1970s, which were loud and powerful (often being quoted as one of the forefathers of Heavy Rock), but also quite sophisticated. West’s unique tone and approach to the guitar, heavily based in the blues tradition, stays to this very day as one of the icons of the formative years of electric guitar. A famous anecdote tells that if one places West in a room with another 99 guitar players, just one note played by him will be immediately recognizable. Since the mid-1970s West recorded sporadically, with none of the albums leaving any significant impact on the scene, but his 2000s output marks a revival of his powers. West returned to what he does best – playing the blues in his unique manner, which has but a few competitors. West formed an excellent group with two formidable blues / rock veterans: Tim BogertFind albums by this artist (Vanilla FudgeFind albums by this artist, CactusFind albums by this artist, Beck, Bogert & AppiceFind albums by this artist) – one of rock’s most respected bass players and Aynsley DunbarFind albums by this artist (John MayallFind albums by this artist, Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist) – one of blues-rock most respected drummers. Dr. Rafael Augusto Lara Palmeros
A superb albumn!!!. Leslie West and a group of excellent musicians – Aynsley Dunbar, Tim Fahey, Kevin Curry, Art Groom, Todd Wolfe and Brian Michell - recorded this marvelous music with covers from Leroy Carr, Ida Cox, The Great Muddy Waters, Sonny Thompson and others. The music is a mixture of Blues-Rock and some Bayou sound (´Green River´). West still sings with a gear-shredding roar and guitar lines sound heavier than thunder on this set of blues-rockers. ´Hit the road Jack´ is relatively sleek and elegant (remember Ray Charles version!!), ´Four day creep´ is a Blues-Rock as old times (West, Bruce and Laing), ´Standing around crying´ is a real good Blues. Gershwin´s ´Summertime´, that closes the albumn is plenity moody, with West´s guitar weeping and a exceptional Brian Mitchell playing piano. A must for a real Blues-Rock fan!!. 4.5 stars.

Stills is able to put his ego away and embrace a much younger Blues-Rock star like Shepherd in order to create what he calls "the blues band of my dreams" in order to revisit his Blues roots. Surprisingly this unlikely coalition works out splendidly and the album is full of a true camaraderie and more importantly some superb Blues songs with scorching guitar solos all along the way.

The new songs are all first class and the covers are updated with sparkling and ass-kicking rejuvenated arrangements, altogether resulting in an album that might have been recorded fifty years earlier – and I mean this as a compliment.

Stills still sings wonderfully as does Shepherd and both play tasty guitar solos, so what else can one ask for. At least these guys play what they believe in and they have something to say, which is better that most other "music" maker these days.

GARY MOORE ~ LIVE FROM LONDON

Recorded: 2009 Released: 2020

This is an archive album by British guitar virtuoso / vocalist / composer Gary MooreFind albums by this artist, recorded live in December 2009 just over a year before his untimely death in 2011. The album was recorded with keyboardist Vic MartinFind albums by this artist, bassist Peter ReesFind albums by this artist and drummer Steve DixonFind albums by this artist. The album presents thirteen tracks, some being his original compositions, which span his entire career, with an emphasis on Blues, which was always his favorite idiom despite the fact that his career covered a wide range of genres.

The tight band and the incredibly coherent choice of material make this album one of his best ever live recordings. The fire and virtuosity of his soloing fully justify his legendary status as a guitar hero and one of the very best axe man of his generation. The music includes such classic Blues anthems as John MayallFind albums by this artist’s “Have You Heard” and Al KooperFind albums by this artist’s “I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know”, which alone are the worth the price of the album in gold.

Overall this album is an instant classic, especially for Blues-Rock enthusiasts and a wonderful reminder of Moore’s genius. Although the market is pretty stuffed with live Moore material, this album is an absolute highlight and an essential part of any decent music collection. Wholeheartedly recommended!

ROBIN TROWER ~ NO MORE WORLDS TO CONQUER
PROVOGUE 76242 (Barcode: 810020502176) ~ UK ~ Blues-Rock

Recorded: 2022 Released: 2022

This is the 26th solo studio album by legendary British Rock guitarist / songwriter Robin TrowerFind albums by this artist, recorded mostly in an intimate trio setting with vocalist Richard WattsFind albums by this artist and drummer Chris TaggartFind albums by this artist. Trower plays both guitar and bass guitar. Occasional organ is played by Paddy MilnerFind albums by this artist and occasional bass by Livingstone BrownFind albums by this artist. The album presents eleven original songs, all by Trower.

As the title appropriately points out, Trower has absolutely nothing more to prove and his over five-decades long recording career, both with Procol Harum and as a solo artist, established his position as one of the greatest British Rock guitar players of all time.

The songs on this album continue the style of his late solo albums, soaked with deep Blues feel and spiced by the spectacular guitar playing, which sounds as good as ever. His abilities remain completely intact and his album are as reliable as sunrise and sunset.

Overall, this is another gem of an album in the long list of his solo albums, which happily for us he keeps delivering in regular time interviews. For his many followers, getting this album is absolutely a no-brainer.

Trower plays both guitar and bass guitar. Occasional keyboards are played by Adrian GautreyFind albums by this artist. The album presents ten original songs, all by Trower.

Following his departure from the iconic Procol HarumFind albums by this artist, Trower pursues a solo career since 1973, with dozens of albums to his credit. He manages miraculously to stick to his own formula of creative Blues-Rock, which he follows in the sixth decade of his career. His guitar playing is still sharp and clear-cut and his vocals are still as powerful as always, and he does not need to reinvent himself or search for any new avenues, doing what he does best. His many fans love his music, and that’s what matters the most.

Schorr is an incredible rising star on the Blues-Rock scene, and this is her 4th album following three excellent solo albums. Her vocals are gutsy and full of the Blues sensitivity, which is very rare.

The songs on this album continue the style of Trower’s late solo albums, soaked with deep Blues feel and spiced by the spectacular guitar playing, which sounds as good as ever. His abilities remain completely intact and his album are as reliable as sunrise and sunset.

EERO KOIVISTOINEN ~ THE ORIGINAL SIN
SVART 307 (Barcode: 6430077093621) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1971 Released: 2021

"The Original SinFind albums with this title", recorded on August 13, 16 & 23, 1971, was the fourth album released by Finnish saxophonist / composer / arranger Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist. Aged 25 at the time, Koivistoinen was already recognized at the time as a central figure on the burgeoning Finnish Jazz scene.

During his student days at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, one of the first European educational institutions to recognize Jazz as a valid musical Art Form worthy of academic studies, Koivistoinen frequented the Finland´s Capital Jazz club scene, performing at jam sessions. By 1967 he already had his first trio with bassist Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist (brother of pianist / composer Heikki SarmantoFind albums by this artist) and the legendary drummer Edward VesalaFind albums by this artist, who is often considered as the Godfather of modern Finnish Jazz. The trio played adventurous free-improvised Jazz, being the pioneers of Free Jazz in their country. Sadly, the trio never recorded an album and the only recorded evidence of their performances can be found on a live EP recorded at the Espoo Jazz Festival in 1967.

In 1967 the newly founded Finnish Jazz Federation (FJF), probably the best professional Jazz organization in Europe at the time, selected Koivistoinen as the first recipient of the annual Georgie Award in recognition for his outstanding talents. Two years later Koivistoinen performed for the first time outside of his country´s borders at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland (his performance at Montreux as a member of the International Festival Big Band was recorded and released on PolydorFind albums on this label), winning the festival´s competition for bands, which in turn led to his appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival in the US, exposing his talents on the global scale.

In the early 1970s Koivistoinen continued his studies in Jazz composition at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where numerous of his compatriot Jazz musicians also studied over the years, starting with Heikki Sarmanto, who upon his return home brought over the American guitarist Lance GundersonFind albums by this artist who plays on this album. During the 1970s Koivistoinen recorded a stream of exceptional albums, which featured his compositional and arranging skills as well as his brilliant saxophone playing. Constantly re-inventing himself, his music kept changing during this decade and touched upon various Jazz genres, including his pioneering contribution to Jazz-Rock Fusion, but always remaining his very own.

Starting with "ValtakuntaFind albums with this title" (1968) and continuing with "OdysseusFind albums with this title" (1969), "For ChildrenFind albums with this title" (1970), "The Original Sin" (1971), "Muusa Ja RuusaFind albums with this title" (1971), "Wahoo!Find albums with this title" (1972), "3rd VersionFind albums with this title" (1973), "The Front Is BreakingFind albums with this title" (1976), "LabyrinthFind albums with this title" (1977) and finally "Live At The Belmont Jazz ClubFind albums with this title" (1977) Koivistoinen produced a body of work of amazing depth, beauty, sophistication and intellectual significance, which remains as a wonderful illustration of the Finnish and European Jazz heritage during that decade.

However, by the end of the 1970s, the immense popularity, which European Jazz managed to kindle, was gradually losing its steam. Record labels, owned by international mogul corporations, lost interest in any kind of adventurous music, Jazz included, and the number of Jazz releases went down considerably, a situation which affected Finland as well. Undeterred by this turn of events Koivistoinen decided to take matters into his own hands and established in 1983 one of the first musician-owned independent record labels, PROFind albums on this label Records, which enabled him to realize his musical projects.

This album is a deeply significant milestone in Koivistoinen´s musical development, since it presents for the first time the true depth of his compositions as well as his overall musical approach. It is also his first work with a large-scale ensemble, which enables him to utilize his arranging skills to a full extent.

The six compositions present here were recorded by three different lineups; a tentet ("Sinner", "Both & And" and "Rock & Roll"), a septet ("The Original Sin") and a sextet (the remaining two). The tentet comprised of: Eero Koivistoinen – tenor, alto & soprano saxophones, Tapani LuuppolaFind albums by this artist – trumpet, Jussi AaltoFind albums by this artist or Erkki LipponenFind albums by this artist – trombone, Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist – tenor & alto saxophone, Pentti LahtiFind albums by this artist – baritone saxophone, Eero OjanenFind albums by this artist – piano, Lance Gunderson – guitar, Pekka Sarmanto – bass and Reino LaineFind albums by this artist & Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist – drums. The sextet comprised of: Koivistoinen, Ojanen, Gunderson, Sarmanto, Laine and Rosnell and the septet added Unto Haapa-ahoFind albums by this artist on bass clarinet.

Both the music and the performances are absolutely breathtaking, although the album focuses on ensemble playing rather than on extensive soloing, but of course there are still plenty of most impressive solos. An atmosphere of serenity, contemplation and wide-open spaces, typical in Finnish music, prevails even in the up-tempo passages, which turns listening to this album into a most satisfying love affair with music. The fact that it is now almost 50 years old is completely meaningless in this context, where true classics only get better with time.

Thanks to SvartFind albums on this label Records for making this musical treasure available again. Listeners interested in Finnish Jazz legacy are recommended to check out also the other Svart Records reissues documenting this burgeoning period.
Side Note
The above are my liner notes included on this album's artwork.

I am honored when asked by the Artists to write liner notes for their albums, always hoping that my words reflect the true spirit of the music. This is also a symbol of our mutual respect and friendship developed over the years.

The same is also true when Record Labels ask me to write liner notes for their releases, mostly in the case of reissues of archival albums, which is a symbol of their appreciation of my knowledge and historical perspective and my recognition of their dedication to the preservation of the history of recorded music and the effort to keep human Culture and Aesthetics alive.

The music is all within the modern mainstream Jazz tradition, showcasing Koivistoinen’s brilliant composing / arranging skills and superb performances by some of the best American Jazz musicians active at the time.

Koivistoinen’s ties with American Jazz go back in time to the years spent at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he absorbed the knowledge he would brilliantly utilize during his future career. He always showed a deep respect towards the American Jazz tradition, but at the same time presented a highly individual voice, which went beyond the boundaries of that tradition and incorporated European musical values and his native Finnish influences, turning him into one of the most versatile and prominent European Jazz personalities, as the music included here brilliantly exemplifies.

It is of course great to see these two important albums expanded and made available again, thanks to the exemplary work done by SvartFind albums on this label Records, which treats the Finnish musical treasures with the respect they deserve, preserving the Cultural values, which are perhaps more important today than ever, in these dark days.
