Composer / arranger / bandleader / bassist Graham CollierFind albums by this artist is one of the Godfathers of modern British Jazz, and his contribution to the genre as a musician, educator and writer are monumental. Although initially schooled in the US (Collier was the first student from the UK to be awarded a scholarship at the Berklee School of Music in Boston in the 1960s), he was in fact one of the pioneers of the European Jazz, accepting the American Jazz tradition as a basis for further development and exploration based on the European cultural heritage. His innovative approach as a composer and arranger were immensely influential not only on the local British scene, but also throughout the entire Europe, especially his usage of irregular meters and time signatures. Over the years Collier composed and recorded a colossal body of work, which includes some of the greatest music of the 20th Century. Considering how obscure and impossible to find these albums are this monumental reissue is a true godsend, done in the best tradition of BGOFind albums on this label Records´ mission to unearth music that should be given another chance.

This is the third solo album by the British singer / songwriter Sandy DennyFind albums by this artist, the undeniable Queen of the British Folk-Rock movement, which flourished from the late 1960s to the mid 1970s. It’s a proper tribute to Denny´s remarkable talents and wonderful output she left us to enjoy forever. It is an absolute must to every Folk-Rock fan anywhere on this planet!

Regardless of ones specific likes and dislikes might be, this is a kind of recording that any true Jazz fan can not ignore. The subtle musical trickery, known only by the European Jazzers, is so obvious here, that I´d recommend this album to every American big band fan, to learn what really can be achieved with such potent "instrument". Brilliant! (Oh yes, I already said so…).

The music presents, as appropriate for the occasion, the entire retrospective of Fame’s musical career, including his greatest hits, as well as the entire scope of his stylistic diversity, presenting Fame as a completely original songwriter and interpreter of Jazz / Rhythm And Blues songs, who had a few equals over time. His feeling for the Blues, which was present in everything he sang and played over the years, was undoubtedly his signature, but in his songwriting Fame contributed some of the most beautiful songs ever written, often with highly whimsical and humorous lyrics.
This album, due to the Big Band arrangements, is one of the most Jazz oriented recordings by Fame, but by far not the only one, as he loved to perform and record with Big Bands, something I was lucky to witness in person several times over the years. Fame is definitely one of the very few vocalists who is able to blend in perfectly with a Jazz Big Band and a Rhythm And Blues combo with the same, impeccable result.
The album is an orgy of great tunes, superb instrumental performances and brilliant vocals, which simply cannot leave any music lover cold, unless he is already cold dead. What luck this concert was recorded and eventually released on record (six years later, but of course better late than never). It has been one of my favorite Fame recordings since the day it was released and a superb summary of those first fifty-five years. God Bless!

With a splendid career going back to the early 1960s, Fame moved gradually from Rhythm And Blues and Pop, which dominated his early career, towards Jazz, and became a superb interpreter of standards as well as fabulous writer of original material, which is completely unique and full of deep lyricism and Blues undertones. On this album Fame is surrounded by a superb group of top British Jazz musicians: trumpeter Guy BarkerFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist and Nick PaynFind albums by this artist, vibraphonist Anthony KerrFind albums by this artist, guitarist Tristan PowellFind albums by this artist, bassist Geoff GascoyneFind albums by this artist, drummer James PowellFind albums by this artist and percussionist Ralph SalminsFind albums by this artist (the two Powells are of course Fame’s sons). Combined with the typical “Englishness” and tongue in cheek attitude, this music is just pure delight.
Sadly, this is one the very last albums recorded by Fame in the new Millennium, which is a great pity. Some archival recordings of his and collections of his earlier recordings still pop up once in a while, proving that he is definitely not forgotten.
For his many fans, this album is an absolute must have of course, and although nor easy to be found these days, it is definitely worth pursuing. A Gem!

As the album´s title ominously suggests, this album was meant to be the last recording by Fame, and sadly so far, six years after it was recorded, no other new album was recorded by him, which is a great pity, especially in view of the excellent form he displays on this album. The music is the usual mixture of Blues, Rhythm And Blues and Jazz, which Fame so uniquely combined into his own idiom for decades. His highly personal delivery, always mixed with a dash (or more) of British humor, and his charismatic presence will remain forever in the memory of those who knew him and his music.
The album´s songs present a concept of a person telling his life´s story via the autographical songwriting, which works beautifully from start to finish. The album as a whole is simply a marvelous piece of artistry and if this is indeed to be Fame´s swan song, it is a most appropriate goodbye gesture.
I don´t think I need to persuade anybody familiar with Fame´s music to grab this marvelous album as long as it is available. As for me – Fame´s music was a true ingredient of the soundtrack of my life, from his very first recordings in the early 1960s and until this one – five decades of joy and musical bliss. Thank you!

The music is absolutely lovely, as always, and presents Fame as a completely original songwriter and interpreter of Jazz / Rhythm And Blues songs, who had a few equals over time. His feeling for the Blues, which was present in everything he sang and played over the years, was undoubtedly his signature, but in his songwriting Fame contributed some of the most beautiful songs ever written, often with highly whimsical and humorous lyrics.
This album also features prominently Fame’s playing the Hammond organ, which was less prominent on his later albums, proving that he was one of the best organists on the British scene ever.
Despite the “Last Blue Flames” warning, Fame recorded another album on his label five years later with almost identical lineup, the fabulous “Swan SongFind albums with this title” released in 2015, hinting as to the possibility of being his last recording, but I still firmly believe and hope that he might bless us with some more of his musical bliss. Recorded at the Berlin Philharmonic, the album´s sound quality is impeccable.
Fame has been my favorite Jazz vocalist since I have heard him live in London in the late 1960s, and I have been fortunate to hear him perform many times over the years in very diverse circumstances ranging from intimate solo appearances to his concerts with Big Bands, always delivering the absolute top performances. Regardless if he sang Jazz, Blues, Rhythm And Blues or even Pop, his absolutely unique intonation and heartfelt articulation are simply magical. Now in his sixth decade as a performer, he is still a formidable Artist.
Bruning is a German Jazz icon, who started her career in the dark days of the DDR period, which paradoxically produced some of the most interesting European Jazz. Her work with the legendary saxophonist Ernst-Ludwig PetrowskyFind albums by this artist is one of the most interesting vocal recordings made at the time behind the Iron Curtain. She is still active today on the German scene and definitely worth following.
Skidmore needs no introduction of course, being one of the world top saxophonists and one of the most important Jazz musicians keeping the John ColtraneFind albums by this artist legacy alive. His enormous contribution to British / European Jazz is unprecedented.
Overall this is a wonderful vocal Jazz album, full of great singing, superb instrumental work and good taste, rarely present on contemporary recordings. Great fun from start to finish and of course warmly recommended!

The music is often contemplative and moves slowly, similarly to many of the modern Classical music pieces, influenced obviously by the composer’s teachers and resembling sometimes even the work of Philip GlassFind albums by this artist. Definitely not easy listening, but a highly rewarding intellectual experience. For the lack of a better alternative I’ve decided to classify it under Jazz, but this music is truly beyond classification and constitutes a class of its own. Fascinating!

The album presents seven tracks, four from the first session and three from the second. Those include all five compositions included on the “Tanglewood 63” album. In addition, it also presents “Country RoadsFind albums with this title”, written by Gary Burton and Steve Swallow, which appeared first on the Burton’s 1968 album by the same name, which included a couple of compositions by Gibbs and one co-composed piece by Gibbs and Burton, and which would have to wait for a couple of years to appear on the 1972 Gibbs “Just AheadFind albums with this title” album. The last track is “June The 15, 1967”, which appeared initially on the Burton’s 1967 “Lofty Fake AnagramsFind albums with this title” album, which also included two compositions by Gibbs, including this one, and which would have to wait for forty-two years to appear on the 2012 Gibbs “Back In The DaysFind albums with this title” album.
The music is, as everything Gibbs ever recorded, absolutely heavenly, both as far as the compositions and the performances are concerned. The formidable team of musicians, under his direction, is able to achieve peaks never earlier encountered in British Jazz orchestral music, and these archival recordings are absolutely fascinating, especially when compared to the final version of most of the music included here, recorded on the “Tanglewood 63” album.
So far, this is definitely my favorite release on the new Jazz In BritainFind albums on this label label, which does a splendid job digging out treasures from dusty vaults, especially so because this album also offers the best sound quality of all their releases so far. So as usual, hats off for the team behind the label and waiting for more of your gems. A bit more attention to details won’t hurt…

This is a reissue / remaster of an album by British Jazz composer / arranger / bandleader Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist, originally released in 1975 on the BronzeFind albums on this label label. It is one of the earliest “reissues”, before the concept became widespread, undertaken simply to correct the blunder of releasing the album on a strictly Rock label, which made it to disappear almost instantly from circulation. The idea of reissuing it on the tiny, but legendary Ah UmFind albums on this label label meant to bring the overlooked gem to the Jazz audiences, where it really belonged. The move was only partially successful, since Ah Um had a very limited marketing abilities and soon disappeared from the market, taking one of the most important British Orchestral / Big Band Jazz albums into the abyss again. The album was reissued again a few years later by the proper archival BGOFind albums on this label label, where it is hopefully still available.

The music, which was light-years ahead of its time, presents a dreamy multi-layered musical journey, full of exquisite melodies, complex harmonies, World Music influences, in short a plethora of musical worlds meshed together, with brilliant orchestral performances and breathtaking soli, mostly by Catharine, Coe and Mariano.
I have cherished this album since the day I had it on the day of its release, and tried to herald its qualities repeatedly over time, sadly due to its obscurity few people shared my enthusiasm over the years. As much as I admire everything Gibbs created over the years, and he certainly managed to produce a substantial body of work over the years, this album was always my favorite piece of his work.
Overall, this is one of the most important and significant Orchestral / Big Band recordings of British Jazz, which lost absolutely nothing of its grandeur, class and depth over time, and which manages to elate my state of being every time I listen to it. The Gibbs / Burton association goes back to their common Berklee School of Music days. Burton included many compositions by Gibbs on his albums in the 1960s, but for a variety of reasons they did not manage to record together until the "In The Public InterestFind albums with this title" album released in 1974. In fact almost all of the compositions by Gibbs appearing in this set were already previously recorded by Burton. Therefore this historic recording is another wonderful example of their lasting cooperation, and since it remained unreleased for five decades, it is even more significant.
Of course Burton always was a "strange bird" on the American Jazz scene and his aesthetic affiliations were much closer to the European Jazz, which was rapidly developing by the mid-1960s. The pioneering Jazz-Rock Fusion recordings by his quartet, especially those with guitarist Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist, paved the way for the Fusion explosion by the end of the 1960. It is therefore not surprising, that Burton was able to appreciate the quality of Gibbs´ compositions in spite of their complex harmonic and rhythmic structures.
The Lancaster University recording is by no mean less interesting and presents the very early stage of Gibbs´ illustrious career as a band leader, parallel to his composing duties. The glorious days of British Jazz when the concept of a functional Big Band was still feasible were sadly rather short lived and therefore any document of the era is simply invaluable. The presence of Jack Bruce on bass, shedding his superstar post-CreamFind albums by this artist image just for the love of Jazz, that he always considered as very close to his heart, was far from sensationalism. In the short period of time, when Bruce was closely involved with the core British Jazz scene, including the recording of his superb "Things We LikeFind albums with this title" album, are truly worth remembering.
Overall this set is a splendid piece of the British Jazz at its creative peak, and as such is an essential part of every serious British Jazz collection. The sound, which is far from ideal, has been restored to the best ability of today´s sound technology and the set includes well researched and comprehensive booklet describing the background and circumstances of these recordings, which is very informative.

The music displays the outstanding talents of Gruntz as pianist, arranger and composer, presenting beautifully diverse music, which includes mainstream Jazz, orchestral Jazz and Jazz-World Fusion pieces, always executed with finesse and absolute charm. Therefore this album is a wonderful introduction to the many talents of Gruntz for listeners not familiar with his work but also a gorgeous collection of previously unavailable recordings for those already familiar with his achievements.
Gruntz was always the epitome of European Jazz as one of its Godfathers, perfectly combining the American Jazz tradition with the European Classical and Folklore traditions. The recordings included herein are all exquisite examples of what European Jazz is all about, stylistically and conceptually. Although the collected pieces have seemingly nothing in common, they amalgamate into a perfect kaleidoscope of modern European Jazz
Personally I can get never enough of Gruntz and his music, so this album is simply one more token of memory by this great Artist, who is sadly relatively little known to most Jazz listeners around the world. In addition his recordings are not easily available as well, which makes the task of keeping his memory alive even harder.
Overall this is a brilliant collection of excellent music, which deserves a proud place in any serious music collection. Not to be missed!

The composition is based on a steady riff, which develops slowly and offers splendid opportunity to all the instrumentalists to create hair-raising solo parts. The sound quality is perfect, which makes the music to be audible in great detail.
Overall, this is a superb musical time capsule, brought to us courtesy of the people behind the Jazz In BritainFind albums on this label label, who work tirelessly to unearth the great treasures of the British Jazz, making us, the followers and enthusiasts, ecstatically happy. It is also a much deserved “thank you” note to the contributions bestowed on us by this wonderful musician.

These recordings were made with a plethora of British Blues, Rock and Jazz musicians, reading like a who´s who of the British Blues / Blues-Rock / Rock And Roll / Jazz and early Jazz-Rock Fusion, comprising of dozens of names, which passed through Korner´s legendary group over time.
As bizarre as it might appear, Korner was a white Jewish boy, born in Paris, who arrived in the UK in 1940, escaping the Nazi persecution, and who in time almost singlehandedly reanimated the interest in the Blues on the local British scene, leading to a phenomenon called the British Blues Revival, which started by the mid-1950s and literally exploded by the mid-1960s, when it became the British Blues Boom. In retrospect this musical idiom proved to be one of the most fundamental cornerstones of British Rock, later spreading also to the European continent. This is a reissue / remaster of the iconic double album by the German guitarist / composer / bandleader Volker KriegelFind albums by this artist, which was his third album as a leader and the second release on the MPSFind albums on this label label. Although recorded during the same session, the material was split into two parts, each on one LP (and now CD).
CD1 was recorded by an octet and features a brass section. It includes three prominent British Jazz musicians: saxophonist Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist, pianist John TaylorFind albums by this artist and drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist. The other players are German Jazz musicians: trombonist Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Heinz SauerFind albums by this artist and bassist Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist. Dutch percussionist Cees SeeFind albums by this artist completes the lineup. The CD presents four tracks, three of which are original compositions by Kriegel and one is an arrangement of a tune by Brazilian composer Edu LoboFind albums by this artist. Three of the tracks last for over ten minutes and the music is strongly Jazz oriented, including some Free Jazz accents.
CD2 was recorded by a quintet, without the brass and including Taylor, Weber, See and German drummer Peter BaumeisterFind albums by this artist. This CD presents eight tracks, six of which are original compositions by Kriegel, one is by Weber and one by Brazilian composer Caetano VelosoFind albums by this artist. The music is more Fusion oriented and the tracks are much shorter, with only one crossing the ten minutes in duration.
In retrospect this is definitely one of the fines examples of European Jazz-Rock Fusion, with a stellar lineup and absolutely brilliant musicianship and compositions. Kriegel was sadly underappreciated at the time, but his complete discography, including several excellent posthumous releases, definitely points out that he was a pivotal figure in European Jazz and Fusion.
Overall, this an absolute must have for every Fusion connoisseur, and one of the most important albums of the genre. Combining the best players from the leading European Fusion scenes at the time: Germany and UK, the music spark with inventiveness, virtuosity and innovation, completely absent from the current Fusion scene. This long awaited reissue fills a major gap in the European Fusion discography and the recorded legacy of Volker Kriegel. In 2014 the German company Edel AG bought the MPS catalogue from Universal and released a series of 25 MPS albums on CD with a new slipcase graphic design, which brought all those excellent albums back to life. In 2015 Edel AG started to record and release new albums under the MPS moniker. In 2016 Edel AG released a series of 10 classic MPS albums on CD, which were beautifully remastered and re-packaged, presenting the original artwork and liner notes, as well as new liner notes and photographs. An obvious labor of love, these reissues are what the MPS catalogue truly deserves. This project was continued in 2017 with another series of 10 classic MPS albums released on CD. In later years some new reissues were released sporadically.
Over the years many SABA / MPS albums were reissued in Japan, which is often the only available source for these albums today, but that is a story in itself.

But the story behind this album goes back fifty years into the past, when the almost identical lineup of the quintet (with George KhanFind albums by this artist in place of Skidmore) released the album “Local ColourFind albums with this title”, which was recorded a couple of years earlier, on the pioneering independent record label ESPFind albums on this label Disk, founded in 1963 and run by a Jewish NY lawyer and Avant-Garde Music protagonist Bernard StollmanFind albums by this artist, and which yours truly proudly stored in his collection ever since.
That album was the first modern / Avant-Garde British Jazz album to be released in the US, together with several other modern European Jazz albums, including even recordings originating from behind the Iron Curtain. At that time most Americans were completely unaware of the existence of modern Jazz outside of the US. It was also the first recording, which features Surman. Five of the compositions on that album are also present on the album, approached in a completely new and different way.
Despite the fact that the musicians are five decades older this time, they seem not to have lost any of the vigor and passion, and with the added experience of a lifetime the music obviously gained an unprecedented level of depth and finesse. The new album also offers a closure of sorts, as it was the last recording by Hiseman, before his tragic death just four months after this album was recorded.
Overall, this is a fine Avant-Garde Jazz album, beautifully executed by these superb players, which will certainly be a cherished addition to every serious British Jazz collection, and the unusual circumstances surrounding it add to its historic value, serving as a half-Century time bridge between the early days of modern British Jazz and now. Brilliant stuff!

The music is somewhat similar to the output of Chris McGregor´s Brotherhood of Breath (as is the group’s lineup), which played a special kind of jazz strongly influenced by Africa music, called “kwela”. Isipingo is just a bit more on the jazzy side of things. For the many fans of 1970s UK jazz this is a must of course.

A brilliant improviser, he was an absolute master of the alto saxophone with very few contenders. Stylistically Osborne tendencies were always oriented towards Free Jazz and he was one of the great pioneers of the genre in UK. Unfortunately his personal life was deeply disturbed by mental illness, which resulted in time spent on and off in mental institutions. By early 1980s the illness became so severe that he had to be institutionalized for life and never again played music. He died in 2007.
Although Osborne recorded quite a few albums as a sideman, his output as leader is very limited. This was his debut session as a leader, which took a lot of persuasion to materialize, as Osborne hated to be in the limelight. Released on the legendary TurtleFind albums on this label label (the first album to be recorded for the label, which was actually started to release this album), the album was a rare collector’s item for many years and the reissue is a blessing. The music consists of just two long tracks (which used to be the LP sides), performed by a quintet with Osborne on alto saxophone, Harry Beckett on trumpet, Chris McGregor on piano, Harry MillerFind albums by this artist on bass and Louis MoholoFind albums by this artist on drums (the rhythm section of Brotherhood Of Breath).
On both tracks the quintet states the theme and then ventures into extended free improvisation passages, with splendid long solos by Osborne and Beckett. The album is a classic example of European Free Jazz, capturing the atmosphere of the era, when music was created because musicians had something to say. Not easy music, but essential to all enthusiasts of the genre and a most important historical document. His unique alto saxophone sound, exceptional improvisational skill and power and total involvement with the music were unparalleled by any of his contemporaries. Unfortunately his career was severely disrupted by mental illness, which eventually caused his early retirement from active performing. Although Osborne did record often in the 1970s as a sideman with the most prominent ensembles at the time, his output as a leader is sadly limited. Therefore the release of this fabulous album, 23 years after it was recorded and remained forgotten, was a major event not only for his many admirers, but also for the entire British Jazz scene. Especially so when one realizes that this album is in fact the first recording of the fabulous SOSFind albums by this artist saxophone trio, supported by a rhythm section. This is a reissue, first time on CD, of an iconic album by British Jazz drummer / composer / bandleader Tony OxleyFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven original compositions by Oxley, recorded by three lineups: a quartet with violinists Philipp WachsmannFind albums by this artist and David BourneFind albums by this artist and bassist Barry GuyFind albums by this artist (two tracks), a trio with Wachsmann and guitarist Ian BrightonFind albums by this artist (two tracks) and finally solo percussion and electronics (three tracks).
Oxley held a pivotal position in British Jazz since the mid 1960s, when he became the house drummer at Ronnie Scott´s club in London, which gave him an opportunity to play with the visiting prominent American Jazz stars and top British Jazz musicians. He was highly respected and always considered as truly extraordinary player, with his own perception of the role of drums within the Jazz idiom, but more importantly the concept of Jazz itself and its transformation into Improvised Music, which was developing at the time. Hearing Oxley performing live was for me always an extraordinary experience, regardless of the circumstances. Even within a most "straightforward" mainstream environment, his drumming was always on a different conceptual plane, although he managed to "keep time" perfectly and without a hitch.
Since the late 1960s Oxley started to be featured on a long series of revolutionary British Jazz albums recorded at the time, many of which remain as absolutely essential examples of modern British Jazz and serve as unsurpassed achievements of that boisterous creative period, like those recorded with Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist, Howard RileyFind albums by this artist, Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist, John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist, John SurmanFind albums by this artist, Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist and others.

Those were followed by the album "IchnosFind albums with this title" (1971) released on RCAFind albums on this label. Following the disappointment with the major labels, which showed no interest in promoting these albums, Oxley joined guitarist Derek BaileyFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Evan ParkerFind albums by this artist as co-founder of the IncusFind albums on this label label, which was one of the first independent artist owned labels in Britain. He recorded two albums for the label: the eponymous "Tony OxleyFind albums with this title" (1975) and finally this, his fifth album as a leader "February PapersFind albums with this title" (1977).
The music on this album has nothing to do with Jazz in the conventional meaning of the idiom, but it is a perfectly logical continuation of the musical development that is documented on the four a.m. albums. Oxley breaks the conventional barriers and pushes the envelope towards Avant-Garde, which calls for new forms of expression not related to melody, harmony or even the usual sound expected from the instruments. Such extensive use of electronics was almost completely unheard of at the time of course and although early Improvised Music was already present on the scene, it was rarely as uncompromising and far-fetched as what Oxley decided to capture herein. Although bold spirited, the music offers a delicate, almost intimate sound and allows the listener to absorb every nuance of these performances.
The solo percussion / electronics pieces are of course the most surprising ones here. Improvised music is usually about group improvisation, but Oxley is one of the first improvisers to undertake the daring effort to freely improvise on his own, proving that such form of expression is both possible and valid.
Listening to this album today, with over four decades of perspective, enables me to extend my appreciation of this momentous historic effort from a new angle. Improvised Music is of course alive and kicking today and I am constantly exposed to a huge number of such recordings. I have to say that most of those contemporary efforts sound pretty pale in comparison to what Oxley managed to capture for posterity then. Despite the limited possibilities, surely compared to what is available today as far as electronic devices are concerned, his imagination and creativity remains unchallenged.

Although these tracks were never meant to be released as commercial recordings, they offer very good sound quality and a wonderful musical experience.
Overall, it is great to see (and hear) this material, which truly deserves to be remembered and listened to, and Runswick deserves to be discovered as an excellent composer and a great musician, whose “Jazz Years” are mostly unknown to the British Jazz enthusiasts. Warmly recommended!

The trio, which was active between 1978 and 1984, recorded just a couple of obscure albums released on small independent European labels and this live recoding, which saw the light of day only more than twenty years after it was recorded, is a substantial addition to its discography. Both Skidmore and Oxley are among my favorite British Jazz musicians and both made tremendous contributions to the development of British and than European Jazz, as did Haurand, not only as a musician but also as organizer and bandleader of such formidable international groups like the European Jazz QuintetFind albums by this artist which than developed into the European Jazz EnsembleFind albums by this artist, which exists to this very day.
The music is a classic example of European post-Coltrane Free Jazz, based on intensive and highly emotional performances by the trio members. Skidmore is a brilliant improviser and his lengthy solos are unstoppable, to the delight of all Free Jazz enthusiasts. Oxley, who is without a doubt the most original Jazz drummer ever, is a monster and his solo work on this album is some of the finest recorded evidence of his genius. Haurand fills in very well and supports his cohorts with his energetic pulsations. The overall sound of the trio is a modern version of the "wall of sound" effect, initiated by John ColtraneFind albums by this artist two decades earlier, but with more emphasis on sophistication rather than on raw power.
Overall this is a tremendous piece of highly charged music, which captures one of the most interesting European Jazz ensembles active in the late 1970s / early 1980s at its peak form and portrays the British / European Jazz scene at the time. An absolute must for British Jazz enthusiasts / collectors!

The last two CDs are dedicated to the exploration of the music of John Coltrane, including a live performance at the legendary Café OTO from 2019 on CD6.
The music is of course brilliant from start to finish, and the release of this Box Set is a truly festive occasion to hear so much music previously hidden from the public ear, all of which is essential to every true British Jazz fan around the globe. The level of the performances is stellar of course, with Skidmore displaying his amazing technique and passion, which obviously are old news for any British Jazz follower, but appear herein in their full might and splendor. Thank God for the depth of Skidmore’s private archives, which made this Box Set possible, and perhaps those might be reexamined in order to find more of such treasures? Of course thanks to Mark WastellFind albums by this artist, the owner of ConfrontFind albums on this label Recordings, for making this dream come true.
Overall, this is an absolutely essential piece of British Jazz history, with hours upon hours of brilliant music, which sees the light of day for the first time. It presents the development of the British / European Jazz scene from the perspective of just one of its many heroes, but considering the incredible gathering of musicians who play on these tracks, it becomes way more than just a story of one man, as important as he might be thanks to his own achievements, constituting in fact a reflection of an Era.

Alan, son of veteran British Jazz figure Jimmy SkidmoreFind albums by this artist, earned his own reputation by storming the modern British Jazz in the late 1960s. He participated in numerous pivotal recordings as sideman, and his debut turned out to be just it – the absolutely perfect example of what was happening at the time. If I had to select just one album, which represents the British scene at that time, this would be it. Skidmore on tenor sax leads a perfect quintet with Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist on trumpet, John TaylorFind albums by this artist on piano, Harry MillerFind albums by this artist on bass and Tony OxleyFind albums by this artist on drums (yes they were John SurmanFind albums by this artist’s rhythm section as well). Of the six exquisite compositions present, two are by John Surman, and the rest by Tony Oxley, John WarrenFind albums by this artist, John Taylor and Alan Skidmore, each contributing one composition. Whatever I’ll say here does not come even close to listening to this music, so do yourself a favor and grab a copy – this is something I’ve been listening to for almost 40 years and it still grabs me each and every time, so it must be really special. Legendary British saxophonist / composer Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist is one of the pivotal players on the modern British Jazz scene. His immense contribution to the development of the scene is well documented on his numerous recordings as a leader and sidemen in the late 1960s / 1970s and his position in the Pantheon of British Jazz is fully earned. Skidmore is one of the relatively few heroes of the British Jazz revolution to continue an active and successful career through the years, which also included recording of new albums periodically, keeping him constantly in the public eye (or rather ear). This album also reveals Skidmore’s open-mindedness and respect towards cultures and music other than Jazz, constituting a splendid example of contemporary Jazz-World Fusion. During his 1994 stay in South Africa Skidmore met the local drums / percussion ensemble AmampondoFind albums by this artist and fell in love with their music. Five years later he actually fulfilled his dream to record an album with Amampondo, which was recorded in South Africa and includes also Colin TownsFind albums by this artist on keyboards. Some overdubbing was later added to the original recording in the UK, which features Steve MellingFind albums by this artist (piano), Arnie SomogyiFind albums by this artist (bass) and Gary HusbandFind albums by this artist (drums). Skidmore plays incredibly on this album. His tone and vigor completely untouched by time and his improvisational powers at their peak, resembling as always those of John ColtraneFind albums by this artist. In fact it almost jumps out of this music that Coltrane would have probably recorded a similar album if he lived, as he was often researching and absorbing the African roots of Jazz prior to his untimely death. This realization adds another dimension to this sublime music, a prophetic one in that. In all respects this is one of the best Jazz-World Fusion albums I’ve ever heard and surely one I’ve probably enjoyed the most. Skidmore’s saxophone improvisations backed up by the African percussion merge perfectly into a new amalgam, which sounds and feels completely natural and coherent. His virtuoso performances are dazzling, but never flashy or overbearing – just exactly right for each moment. Skidmore again proves to his listeners that he is a Master with unmatched quality and talent. This album deserves to be listened to by every Jazz lover on this planet and embodies an essential recording of human Culture, transcending race, backgrounds and traditions and pointing clearly to the future of music.

This is a reissue of one of the most iconic British Jazz albums in all time, the only studio album by the saxophone trio comprising of Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist (tenor saxophone / drums / percussion), Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist (alto saxophone) and John SurmanFind albums by this artist (baritone and soprano saxophones / bass clarinet / synthesizers). The album presents eight original compositions, co-credited to all three members of the trio.
I vividly remember the first time when I listened to this album in 1975, being completely knocked out of my socks. The sheer chutzpah by these three musicians doing something so unheard of, playing music galactically remote from anything around, boldly combining the entire Jazz legacy into a completely new universe, and most importantly not giving a toss about what the critics will say (more about this later), was nearly an out-of-body experience. I knew them personally and heard them playing live quite often, but this album was truly something else.
The trio came together many months before the studio album was recorded and their early work together can be found on the appropriately titled “Looking For The Next OneFind albums with this title” live album, released on CuneiformFind albums on this label Records in 2013. The time spent gigging together polished their act and level of interplay and by the time they entered the studio, they were completely a three-headed one-minded musical unit.
All three players were already established and highly regarded figures on the British Jazz scene at the time, taking an active role in the revolution, which led to the creation of the new, modern British Jazz, emancipated from the American Jazz traditions and limitations. But the meeting of the trio sparked a new level of creativity and “out of the box” thinking, like Surman’s fascination with synthesizers and creating layers of background sound, which he utilizes to this very day. The complexity of simultaneous triple soloing and harmonizing is staggering and has very few parallels to this very day.
The new album’s packaging features several reviews of the album, published at the time of its release, and beautifully portrays the rigidness and ridiculous conservatism the British music press suffered from at the time, which opposed the revolutionary trends bitterly.
Overall, this is a timeless Masterpiece in the purest meaning of the term. The music is still absolutely fresh and stunning, losing absolutely nothing of its ingenuity, brilliance and spirituality. In retrospect it sounds even more beautiful than it did at the time of its creation, probably due to the fact that we have been exposed to so much bad music over time, that this sounds like honey in the ears. I’d go as far as saying that anybody who did not hear this album, did not hear British Jazz at its absolute best.

This version of Ubizo includes such gifted players as Ingolf BurkhardtFind albums by this artist (trumpet), Steve MellingFind albums by this artist and Colin TownsFind albums by this artist (keyboards) and Neville MalcolmFind albums by this artist (bass), alongside the African players, who play a plethora of folklore instruments. This album is slightly more oriented towards the ethnic elements, with relatively short tracks, but the scope and the beauty of the music is breathtaking. The Jazz elements are of course still strongly manifested, especially in view of the two John ColtraneFind albums by this artist compositions included, with spectacular solos by Skidmore. Overall this is another masterpiece of Jazz-World Fusion, with great music from start to finish, proving that music does not have to be somber and gloomy to be intelligent and rewarding. I had a great fun listening to this album and I’m sure many listeners will feel the same. Wholeheartedly recommended!

This time the group presents a slightly different balance between Jazz and Folklore, as the “Jazz section” is strengthened by the addition of trumpeter Ingolf BurkhardtFind albums by this artist (from the NDR Big BandFind albums by this artist). It is quite interesting to compare this recording with the BOB ones and observe the process of maturity and refining that occurred in the meantime. The raw power and wildness (in search of musical and not only freedom) is replaced here by moderation and sophistication. Yes, we are all getting older, no doubt, but this does not affect Skidmore’s playing, which is exceptional, like always. His tone and improvisational skills are a symbol of (spiritual) youth and his Coltranesque explorations remain equal to none. I only hope Skidmore will continue to record his superb music for many years to come. Delightful!

Therefore this was to be the last SM album to feature his extraordinary drumming skills. This beautiful new remaster finally (for the first time ever) gets rid of the muddy and hollow sound from which this album suffered badly, obscuring much of the music it contained. Shortly before this music was recorded, Surman recorded his 2nd album as a leader, the iconic “How Many Clouds Can You See?Find albums with this title”.
The music is of course absolutely Godly, a brilliant snapshot of the explosive modern British Jazz at its absolute peak, which takes the Jazz tradition exponentially expanded into new space-time continuum. Every one of these musicians is a master of his instrument and Surman’s music is an ideal catalyst which helps the music to explode. Hearing is believing of course, but there are very few albums, which can match the genius and intensity of this music. Since the German radio sound engineers knew how to capture the sound perfectly, listening to this album is an unadulterated ecstasy.
Overall, this is probably one of the best examples ever of the early European Jazz at its pivotal stage, taking everything there is to take form the American Jazz tradition between Swing and Free and moving to the next stage of evolution. A quintessential musical moment captured for posterity and serving as a beacon pointing towards the feature.

I have been harshly criticized many times (by Americans of course) for saying that although Americans invented Jazz, Europeans perfected it. Anybody listening to this album and still not admitting this to be true must be completely deaf. To me this is a perfect album, one of very few that deserves to be called “perfect” in every respect. Surman guests on soprano saxophone as does the divine Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist, who contributes one vocal track with her lyrics. The music, all written by Taylor, is absolutely amazing. Not only in its melodic and rhythmic structures, but also being amazingly diverse stylistically. Although there are five tracks on the album, two of them are in fact “double treats”, combining two different compositions, resulting in seven original compositions written for this album.
Taylor cleverly uses the entire palette of modern Jazz, with the composition ranging is style from serenely melodic to frantically and freely improvised. Of the seven compositions, only one is a piano trio and the rest all feature one of the musicians as a soloist. Surman is featured on the free style piece and his solo there ranks amongst his finest ever. Winstone, as usual, adds her magical siren’s mysticism on the tune that closes the album. Of all the British modern Jazz albums recorded at the time, this one is perhaps the most “perfect” one, encompassing and representing the period and the music it created. All the elements of this enchanting music just come together here in a most sensitive way making the total rise above the sum of the ingredients. Not only do all the musicians play perfectly and the music is impeccable, but also the spirit of adventure and the drive to discovery are omnipresent. I can’t even begin to emphasize how important this album is and how vital it is for every modern Jazz enthusiast to savor and cherish. Beyond essential!

Take a man, who was the keyboards player and composer for the Ian Gillan BandFind albums by this artist, one of Britain’s most notorious rockers of the early 1970s, transport him 20 years forward and you get one of Britain’s most famous TV and Film composers. As if this wasn’t enough, the same person also has ambitions to become a Jazz composer and actually assembles a big band, which he calls the Mask OrchestraFind albums by this artist, writes a collection of Jazz compositions, arranges and records them and eventually releases an album on his own label, called ProvocateurFind albums on this label Records, which boldly states as it slogan: “Improvise not Compromise”. Now that’s something that truly deserves to be called a chutzpah! The amazing part of all this is that it not only works, but actually works wonders. Towns’ debut recording with his ensemble is a majestic piece of music, refreshing and illuminating, continuing the Ellingtonian tradition of big band Jazz composition and at the same time invigorating that tradition, taking it up to contemporary standards. This stunning album presents Towns and his work at their full glory. It is an extended piece, similar to the symphonic suite form established in Classical Music, which can be considered as a Symphonic Jazz suite. Towns expands his Mask Orchestra into a 70-piece orchestra, which he calls Mask SymphonicFind albums by this artist, using the Jazz big band and an adding an entire symphonic orchestra. Although requiring attentive listening, patience and open-mindedness, this music is richly rewarding and holds many intellectual as well as emotional qualities, which should keep all Jazz lovers happy. British pianist / composer / arranger / bandleader Colin TownsFind albums by this artist, one the most talented and prolific European Jazz composers, is renown for his work in a variety of musical settings, which include cinema, TV and Jazz big band. Therefore it is no surprise that the Birmingham Royal Ballet would commission Towns to compose a suite, to be used as the accompaniment for the ballet’s performance. The composer stood up to the challenge admirably, as documented on this album. The music, inspired by the Greek mythological hero Orpheus, is performed by Towns’ Mask OrchestraFind albums by this artist, which includes an expanded percussion section allowing a more rhythmic emphasis in the music. Although intended for the ballet, the music stands perfectly on its own and is able to inspire and touch the listener even without the visual counterpart. The separate pieces of the suite differ from each other in many respects, but sustain a feeling of continuity and conceptual unity. Slightly more percussive at times than Towns’ usual compositions (as appropriate for modern dance) some of the parts are also beautifully melancholic, creating a stunningly dramatic atmosphere of the entire suite. The music is quite complex, presenting the band with challenging obstacles, but the experienced and talented musicians of this caliber conquer the difficulty with flying colors. Distinguished soloist like Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist and Peter KingFind albums by this artist (saxophone) and Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist (trumpet), along with younger but highly skilled players in the band deliver an all round excellent performance. The album includes a bonus track, which was considered, but eventually not included in the ballet performance. All in all this is another momentous achievement for Towns and his band, worthy of an honorable place in any serious Jazz music collection. On a side note, I wonder if the tragic fate of Orpheus, a poet and musician, who tried to cheat death using his artistic skills and perished himself in the process, is not a metaphor one can easily apply to artists even in our times. After all Orpheus did achieve immortality, even if only as a myth, so perhaps the role of all artists lies primarily with whatever is left as their legacy, by which they will be remembered?

The quartet album is a brilliant example of Tracey’s openness towards the “new winds” that were stirring up the British Jazz scene, with strong Avant-Gardist / Free Jazz influences ventilating the scene. In complete contrast to many of his veteran contemporaries, Tracey had no problem whatsoever with these trends and flirted with them openly, as long as he was either enjoying or in control, as many of his recordings, like those with Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist or Keith TippettFind albums by this artist, clearly show. This quartet was not playing Free as such, but fiery improvisations and less strict rhythmic patterns are clearly audible, and the general carefree atmosphere testifies.
The Big Band album is a complete different pair of galoshes, with Tracey showing off his genius as composer / arranger / Big Band leader, which always way one of his undeniable fortes (not that he had any weaknesses as a musician that I am aware of). The compositions are simply brilliant, the arrangements unique and the Big Band, exploding with talent, is riding the wind, soaring like there is no tomorrow. Considering the fact that this album was recorded in one day, it is truly amazing that the Big Band performs all these complex arrangements with awe-inspiring ease and elegance.
Overall, these are two absolute British Jazz treasures, and their absence from the record market was a travesty. We should be grateful to Clark TraceyFind albums by this artist (Stan’s son) for bringing them back to life on the family’s ReSteamedFind albums on this label label, hopefully seeing more of these gems getting the same treatment soon. Anybody interested in Jazz who does not own the original LPs should of course get this Box Set ASAP, since not knowing this music is simply criminal. Unless of course someone prefers to listen to the insanely boring American mainstream…

This particular album is completely unique for several reasons. This early lineup of Weather Report has almost no other live recordings, except for the Japanese only “Live In TokyoFind albums with this title” album. The music is characterized by highly improvised, often completely Free Jazz approach, before the group gradually shifted into the more melodic / Funky vein, which sounded completely different from the early period. Also the presence of the three musicians from outside the group’s lineup is of course unprecedented. Additionally, the fact that half of the tracks here last for well over ten minutes in duration, and the entire album lasts for two hours, emphasizes the highly improvised nature of the music. In short, this album presents mostly the less known side of Weather Report, which reflects their most ambitious, creative and challenging period.
It is worth to remember that although the group was formed in the US, it was never a typical American act, and when all the European elements were finally gone, it lost most of its initial impact before eventually falling apart. On the other hand, if the group would have continued in the same direction of advanced improvisation, it probably would have never achieved the popularity and fame they did achieve at their peak.
Overall, this album is a true revelation in every respect, and for the many Weather Report fans worldwide, it is an eye (ear) opener, which they can’t miss. The fact that it was released by a Polish reissues label GADFind albums on this label Records speaks volumes of the label’s initiative to uncover past musical treasures. This music is beyond essential!
