This is the criminally overdue reissue of the second album by British Jazz composer / arranger / bandleader Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist, which also was the second part of his great trilogy, which started with "The Greek VariationsFind albums with this title" and was followed later by "Kaleidoscope Of RainbowsFind albums with this title". It is one of the great gems of the revolutionary British Jazz, which developed in the Golden Decade (1965-1975) and changed to face of music as we know it.

Influenced by Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist and Gil EvansFind albums by this artist, Ardley was the creator of the innovative Big Band / Orchestral sound, which was one of the magic ingredients of the new British Jazz at the time. Although based on the compositional ideas of Ellington and Evans, Ardley managed to push them way forward into an amalgam with contemporary European Classical music, early atmospheric / ambient music and other elements, creating unique orchestral soundscapes. As the musical director, resident arranger and conductor of the New Jazz OrchestraFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. NJOFind albums by this artist), Ardley had at his disposal the crème de la crème of the British Jazz players, and quite naturally he used them to record his own projects as well.

Overall the album presents a wondrous splendor of musical ideas, marvelously executed by the musicians involved, creating together one of the most beautiful examples of creativity and intelligence, which were the chief ingredients of the music created by Ardley time and again. As an album, this is one of the very few examples of musical perfection, which set the standards for all the others. It is in every respect as perfect today as it was at the time of its recording.

A curious point about this album is the fact that this was the first ever recording to be funded by a grant from the Art Council, which supported a plentitude of great musical projects in the years to come. The album was produced by the legendary Denis Preston, who was in charge of recording a myriad of brilliant early British Jazz albums and without whom the this great music might have never been captured for posterity. The reissue is brilliantly remastered and sounds absolutely spectacular.

This is an unconditional, absolute essential piece of music!

The short and tragic life of pianist / composer Mike TaylorFind albums by this artist, an eccentric genius fallen victim to mental illness / drug abuse, which proved self-destructive and led to his death at the age of 29, is surely worthy a script adaptation for a Martin ScorseseFind albums by this artist movie. Sometimes referred to as “the Syd BarrettFind albums by this artist of British Jazz”, Taylor had close ties with a relatively small group of musicians, like Graham BondFind albums by this artist and the members of his Graham Bond OrganizationFind albums by this artist, which included Jack BruceFind albums by this artist and Ginger BakerFind albums by this artist – soon to be founders of CreamFind albums by this artist. Many people will be surprised to learn that three songs co-written by Ginger and Mike appear on Cream’s Wheels Of FireFind albums with this title album (“Pressed Rat And Warthog”, “Those Were The Days” and “Passing The Time”). Another one of his superb songs – “Jumping Off The Sun” – was recorded by ColosseumFind albums by this artist and appears on several of their albums.

Although known intimately by very few people at the time, the legend lives on and periodically the flame of interest is rekindled among the modern British Jazz fans, like in the case of reissue of his only two existing recordings: PendulumFind albums with this title and TrioFind albums with this title. Even fewer people are aware of the spectacular tribute album recorded by Taylor’s musician friends three years after his death. Recorded under the musical direction of another British Jazz legendary figure, composer / arranger / bandleader Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist, who discovered Taylor’s genius immediately and scored some of his compositions for the New Jazz OrchestraFind albums by this artist when Taylor was still alive. Unfortunately the concert, which was to feature NJO and Mike’s trio never materialized, since Taylor (already very ill at the time) simply missed the gig. Nevertheless Ardley continued to use Taylor’s music as part of the regular NJO repertoire and suggested to Denis PrestonFind albums by this artist, owner of the legendary Lansdowne Studios in London, where most of the pivotal modern British Jazz was recorded, to produce a tribute album to Mike Taylor’s musical genius. Preston, who recorded the two Taylor albums, needed no persuasion and funded the complex and costly project with no hesitation, considering it a most appropriate gesture.

Ardley assembled a group of 20 musicians to record this project, sharing the scoring of the music for a large ensemble with others, who were close to Taylor and new him well, like Howard RileyFind albums by this artist, Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist and Dave GellyFind albums by this artist. One of the tracks is based on a previously unreleased Taylor quartet recording, with the ensemble overdubbed on top of the original recording, which makes Taylor’s participation in this project almost “in person” as well as “in spirit”. Considering the fact that this album combines the genius of Taylor’s Jazz composition with the genius of Ardley’s Jazz scoring / arranging, we get (in mathematical terms) a genius squared result – a rare event indeed. Recommending this album would be somewhat similar to recommending someone to read some Joyce or see a van Gogh – completely superfluous. I’m sure you get the drift by now!

For listeners familiar with the NJO recordings the music presented here will not be unanticipated, as it follows the pattern presented on their studio recordings, which is based on intricate and lavish orchestral arrangements and excellent solos by the orchestra members. The live sound and the raw power of the twenty piece orchestra are of course irresistible and illustrate the supremacy of orchestral music over small ensembles as far as the scale of possibilities is concerned. The orchestra performs two compositions by the lamented pianist / composer Mike TaylorFind albums by this artist, who was already deceased when this music was recorded. Another pleasant surprise is the inclusion of a composition by the legendary Jack BruceFind albums by this artist, who played in the earlier lineup of the orchestra. The presentation of the tunes by the no less legendary Humphrey LytteltonFind albums by this artist is the proverbial cherry on the top.

The suite-like piece marks the beginning for Ardley´s interest in electronic music, which started when he met Keith Winter a year before this music was recorded. His future recording will feature synthesizers of course but this early, both technologically and conceptually, meeting between electronic and acoustic sounds is truly fascinating and innovative, especially since it also features a string section.

Overall this album is an invaluable historical document of the time and of the British Jazz history, and well deserved thanks go to Peter MuirFind albums by this artist, the man behind the Dusk FireFind albums on this label / Market SquareFind albums on this label labels and to Dave Gelly for the informative liner notes and his first hand experiences. This is a Box Set of archival material by British saxophonist / organist / composer / bandleader Graham BondFind albums by this artist, one of the most idiosyncratic and pioneering figures of the British Jazz, Jazz-Rock and Prog scenes. The material collected here consists mostly of recordings made by the BBC, but includes also some ultra-rare home recordings, demos and other ditties, covering the period between 1962 and 1972, which more or less presents Bond´s entire career before his tragic death in 1974, aged just 36 at the time.

Regardless of what various music history sources have to say, Bond is singlehandedly responsible for the creation of the Jazz-Rock idiom around 1963, when he formed the Graham Bond QuartetFind albums by this artist, which featured guitarist John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist, bassist Jack BruceFind albums by this artist and drummer Ginger BakerFind albums by this artist (which were all destined to become superstars in the years to follow). The quartet amalgamated Bond´s experience with the Jazz world, gained while he was a member of the Don RendellFind albums by this artist Quintet, with the exploding Rhythm And Blues phenomenon, creating the earliest manifestation of Jazz-Rock known to man. One session of the Don Rendell Quintet with Bond as its member is included here and it also features as a guest musician saxophonist Dick Heckstall-SmithFind albums by this artist, who would become another of Bond´s close associates when he formed the seminal Graham Bond OrganizationFind albums by this artist in 1965, which was later joined by the celebrated drummer Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist. Following the Organization´s breakup Bond formed the Graham Bond InitiationFind albums by this artist and later on collaborated with the poet / lyricist Pete BrownFind albums by this artist, who wrote also the booklet that accompanies this Box Set. Their recordings together are the last (chronologically) tracks in this collection.

The music included in this collection is of varied quality and sometimes of pretty Lo-Fi sound quality, even after it was carefully restored and remastered, but it is of enormous historic importance, as it documents not only Bond´s career but in fact the entire British Jazz scene, which was experiencing at that time a tremendous upheaval and explosion of new talents and ideological modifications of the very fabric of Jazz, which was parting from the American dominance and creating a new variety of the idiom, which would crystallize as European Jazz, spawning Jazz-Rock in the process.

Bond´s performances on the Hammond Organ are all superbly executed and it makes perfect sense that they influenced an entire generation of British musicians, who invented Progressive Rock next, such a Jon LordFind albums by this artist of Deep PurpleFind albums by this artist, Dave GreensladeFind albums by this artist of ColosseumFind albums by this artist, Brian AugerFind albums by this artist and of course many others. Kudos to the German RepertoireFind albums on this label label, which is one of the most important sources of reissues, for the meticulous work done on this set and for bringing this material back to life. This set continues the work done by Repertoire on the previous Graham Bond Box Set called "Wade In The Water – Classics, Origins and OdditiesFind albums with this title", which covers the recordings by Graham Bond Organization. Together these two Box Sets pay tribute to one of the greatest heroes of the British Jazz / Jazz-Rock pioneering figures, who is sadly often forgotten and is rarely given the credit he deserves for his revolutionary creativity.

If there ever was a quintessential Jazz-Rock album, which practically not only is the first recorded example of the genre, but also defines it unequivocally, this is it! The music herein was initially released as a double LP for the first time in 1970, but it consists of two sessions recorded earlier by the legendary British saxophonist / organist / vocalist Graham BondFind albums by this artist, the earlier one in 1963 and the later in 1966. These two sessions, diametrically different and yet completely unified in spirit, present a miniscule window into the time-space continuum, which enables us to take a peek at the most feverish period in British music, where invention and pioneering breakthrough were happening on a daily basis. The first of these two sessions is not only the first recording of the emerging Jazz-Rock genre but also the recording debut of one of its future heroes, guitarist John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist. The Graham Bond Quartet, captured live in London´s legendary Klooks Kleek club consisted of Bond (on sax), McLaughlin, Jack BruceFind albums by this artist on acoustic bass and Ginger BakerFind albums by this artist on drums. They played a unique brand of modern jazz, which combined the elements of Free Jazz, Swing and Rock (or Rhythm And Blues), basically inventing the Jazz-Rock Fusion on the fly. Although the music is predominantly Jazzy, Baker´s rhythmic approach, Bond´s phrasing and McLaughlin´s scales all included clear Rock innuendos. During the period separating the first session and the second one, Bond formed the Graham Bond OrganizationFind albums by this artist, which recorded a couple of LPs in 1965 ("The Sound Of 65Find albums with this title" and "There`s A Bond Between UsFind albums with this title") and practically fell apart after Bruce and Baker left to form CreamFind albums by this artist. The second recording features another interim quartet with Bond (this time on organ), saxophonist Dick Heckstall-SmithFind albums by this artist, Bruce (who double-gigged between Cream and some Jazz activities) and the young and upcoming drummer Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist. The music recorded during this session is already full-fledged Fusion, with Jazz being tightly incorporated with Blues, Rhythm And Blues and Rock, similar to the patterns perfected during the Organization days. Some of the material appears on the Organization recordings, other was new, but the overall quality is of course everlasting. Shortly after this recording Heckstall-Smith and Hiseman left Bond to join John MayallFind albums by this artist´s BluesbreakersFind albums by this artist and later formed the mighty ColosseumFind albums by this artist. In retrospect this album, although relatively little known by Jazz-Rock enthusiasts, is a holy grail of the genre and an essential piece of any serious music collection. Unavailable for years, the CD recent reissue is a major contribution to preservation of this superb musical achievement. Essential stuff!

IAN CARR ~ SOUNDS & SWEET AIRS

This is a delightful and criminally little known album by British Jazz trumpeter / composer / bandleader / author Ian CarrFind albums by this artist, recorded with the great pianist / composer John TaylorFind albums by this artist, who plays the organ of the Southwark cathedral in London, where this music was recorded. The album presents twelve pieces, ten of which were composed by Carr and two co-composed by Carr and Taylor. Nine of the pieces are recorded by the duo and three are trumpet solos. The music was inspired by works of William ShakespeareFind albums by this artist, whose younger brother Edmond lies buried in the cathedral. The music was recorded, edited and produced by the lamented Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist.

The music was recorded without being previously rehearsed and is therefore completely unique, is not surprisingly absolutely stunning. Carr found the ideal partner for this endeavor, as Taylor´s highly aesthetic and deeply artistic approach suits this music ideally and his organ parts are delicate and sophisticated, but kept somewhat on a second plane to accompany the leading trumpet parts. Carr´s virtuosic trumpet / flugelhorn parts are no surprise to his many followers, but he can be rarely heard playing with such lyricism and melancholy, as expressed here.

Carr proved himself as a diverse composer and performer throughout his long and fruitful career, but this album is certainly quite different from most of his Jazz oriented activities. This music, although obviously improvised, is also heavily influenced by Church and Classical Music structures, which dominate its character.

Overall this album, which sadly was one of his last chapters in his recorded legacy, is a superb reminder of his great talents and a fond memory of his lovely personality, which we all miss. In case anybody is interested to buy this album, it is still available, so don´t even think twice!

Following the 1994 reunion, which proved to be extremely successful, both artistically and commercially, the pioneering British Jazz-Rock Fusion band ColosseumFind albums by this artist, one of the greatest band ever in the genre´s history, decided to keep the reunited band together for further concerts and even recorded a couple of new albums, of which this is the first one. In retrospect, with the tragic death of saxophonist Dick Heckstall-SmithFind albums by this artist in 2004, this album was destined to be one before the last recording by the original band, which of course included also vocalist Chris FarloweFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Dave GreensladeFind albums by this artist, guitarist Clem ClempsonFind albums by this artist, bassist Mark ClarkeFind albums by this artist and drummer Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist. The album includes eleven original compositions by the band members, performed brilliantly, as always. None of the players seem to have lost any of their passion for music or the ability to perform, which is evident, every step of the way. It seems an appropriate way to say goodbye to the numerous fans around the world and although seals the era, emphasizes what a glorious era it was. A must!

These six musicians had so much talent and ability between them that they could outplay any of their contemporaries with their hands tied behind their backs. This album contains some brilliant compositions (including the classic Jack BruceFind albums by this artist song Theme For An Imaginary Western, which gets an outstanding treatment here) and excellent performances, shadowed only by the live versions, which are present on the next album. This is a Prog classic which only gets better in time.

The original release of this album was a 2LP set and this 2CD edition more than doubles the original album´s playing time, including additional material that was recorded at the same concerts from which the original album was put together.

This reissue is the answer to the question: "How do you take the best possible album and make it better?" The new remaster and the additional material simply turn this iconic album into what is probably the most important recording made at the historic crossroads that produced, after a period of about half a decade of crystallization and construction, two of the tremendous British contributions to music in the 1960s: Blues-Rock Fusion and Jazz-Rock Fusion (the other being Progressive Rock, which also has a few moments on this album).

The complexity and the ingenuity of the music on this album are mind-bugling and in fact it was never matched by any other album of that period. The musicians struggled with the difficulties of playing this music live and compensated for any technical imperfections by the fire and enthusiasm of the performance. In fact the group´s reunion after twenty three years produced other live versions of the same material ("Live Cologne 1994Find albums with this title"), which are technically more perfect than the recordings herein, a fact that can be easily explained by the musical experience acquired during that period of time.

In retrospect this album simply refuses to fade away and still shines like a beacon of musical vitality, sophistication and stylistic crosspollination, which puts most of contemporary music in a miserable and pitiable light. Brainwashed and undereducated listeners of today can´t tell great music from organic waste…

I wonder if we can expect a future 4CD version of this album? After all this has already been reissued three times, so why not again? Still absolutely essential, perhaps even more so than before!

The first CD of this 2CD release offers a complete show recorded on February 12, 1971, which as far as I know was previously unissued and is alone worth the price of the album. The show is more relaxed and open to improvisation then the material recorded in March and partly included on the a.m. live album.

The second CD however, is more problematic, since as far as I can see it is identical to the second CD included on the EsotericFind albums on this label reissue “Live (2CD Expanded Edition)Find albums with this title” from 2016, with a confusing, slightly different running order. Why on earth would RepertoireFind albums on this label do this is beyond me.

But as mentioned earlier, every instance of Colosseum material, especially as excellently recorded as the music included here, is worth its weight in gold. It is truly amazing that this music, almost exactly fifty years young, sounds still so exciting today. Absolutely essential stuff!

This is an archival live 2CD + DVD album by the iconic British Jazz-Rock Fusion group ColosseumFind albums by this artist, recorded / filmed by German WDR TV on September 27, 2003 at the Viersen Jazz Festival, which was part of their 2003 tour in Germany. The material was intended for the legendary “Rockpalast” TV show. The reunited (in 1994) band just recorded their new (at the time) album “Tomorrow`s BluesFind albums with this title” and were in absolute top form. The ailing saxophonist Dick Heckstall-SmithFind albums by this artist, who would sadly depart just a few months later, was replaced by the fabulous Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist, the wife and life companion of the band’s leader, drummer Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist, and the rest of the superb team included keyboardist Dave GreensladeFind albums by this artist, guitarist Clem ClempsonFind albums by this artist, bassist Mark ClarkeFind albums by this artist and vocalist extraordinaire Chris FarloweFind albums by this artist. The album includes several tracks from the new album and a mixture of their classic repertoire, going back right to their debut album. The DVD offers all the audio tracks present on the two CDs and in additional twenty minutes long interview with Hiseman.

The sound and vision quality of the material is absolutely superb and now even enhanced by a careful restoring process, with a stunning result, probably the best among all the many live Colosseum recordings.

The music is of course absolutely Godly from start to finish and Colosseum followers can easily compare this material with their legendary “LiveFind albums with this title” album from 1971, to see that although over thirty years passed by, the band lost absolutely nothing of their fire and power, and managed to polish their show to absolute perfection. The level of the improvisation during the extensive keyboards, guitar, saxophone and drums solos is genial and Farlowe’s vocals are still unbeatable.

With Dick, Barbara and Jon now gone, listening to this album is a deep, almost spiritual experience of longing for friendships lost, and time mercilessly passing for all of us. Great to see the legacy of the greatest band ever still living and new archival material still being released.

Overall, this is an absolutely essential piece of the recorded legacy by this iconic band, which combined Blues, Rock, Jazz and everything in-between better than almost anybody out there, for generations to come. Glittering musical gold!

This specific concert bursts with energy and enthusiasm, and Hiseman’s lengthy drums solo is an absolute classic. Clempson falls in within the Colosseum modus operandi perfectly from day one and his soloing is sublime as always. With four of the five tracks clicking well over ten minutes in duration, this is a true orgy of improvisation, albeit perfectly well organized. The sound quality of this recording if somewhat iffy, but the remastered material is definitely listenable, compared with the bootleg versions of this album that have been around for ages.

As usual, every instance of Colosseum material, especially as excellently performed as the music included here, is worth its weight in gold. It is truly amazing that this music, almost exactly fifty years young, sounds still so exciting today. Absolutely brilliant stuff!

The sound quality of this recording if truly iffy, and even the remastered version is not easily listenable, albeit somewhat better than the bootleg versions of this album that have been around for ages. Obviously the source material for this material is simply sub-standard.

And yet, every instance of Colosseum material, especially as excellently performed as the music included here, is worth its weight in gold. It is truly amazing that this music, almost exactly fifty years young, sounds still so exciting today. Absolutely brilliant stuff!

Colosseum were one of the most imaginative and intelligent early Fusion / Prog bands ever and managed to create a highly unique sound and musical aesthetics. A perfectly balanced amalgam of Jazz, Rock and Blues, which they created, remains largely unmatched to this very day. Their success can be mostly credited to the perfect blend of their musical personalities and immense collection of diverse talents, as well as the leadership of Hiseman, who was one of the most important British musicians of his generation. I was lucky to know Jon and watching him and the band perform was always a revelation.

CD1 of the album covers the material recorded in 1969 and 1970 by the German TV show “Beat-Club” (the first four tracks) and the 1969 concert in Vienna (the next four tracks). CD2 covers the 1971 concert in Frankfurt (four long tracks). The “Beat Club” material is also included in video version on the enclosed DVD.

This album offers an incredible wealth of music, hair-raising instrumental performances and a sublime glimpse at the period when music was at its absolute creative peak. There are but a few groups that managed to achieve the same level of intensity and inventiveness ever since.

For Colosseum fans this album is absolutely essential of course, but the interest goes way beyond just that. British Jazz and Fusion enthusiasts will be also thrilled; as should any music loving person on this planet be as well. This music is beyond recommendation, a true Holy Grail!

The music is a wonderful example of the band’s live act, which includes music spanning their entire career. Although some of that music appears on other live albums, due to the highly improvised nature of the band’s performances, each and every version of these tunes is completely unique. It also reflects the phenomenal agility of Barbara, who joined the group only a few months earlier (although she did play some gigs with the band before formally joining), and blended perfectly into the act, obviously adding her personal fabric to the tunes.

Each and every live album by Colosseum depicts the incredible talents of all the band members, with the spotlight on their abilities as improvisers, since the band’s material was always heavily influenced by Jazz and the live performances were ideal platforms to “go wild” and play lengthy instrumental solos and vocal extravaganzas.

Overall, this is as brilliant as every other Colosseum album, studio and live alike, and if anybody missed the original release of this album, this is an opportunity to repent and correct mistake. Absolutely not to be missed!

"The Grass Is GreenerFind albums with this title" was the second US release by the superb British band ColosseumFind albums by this artist. Founded in 1968 by drummer Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist, Colosseum was one of the most important and innovative bands active in the UK in the late 1960s / early 1970s. It combined virtuosic performances and imaginative musical writing way ahead of its time; crossing genres elegantly and skillfully, amalgamating Blues, Jazz and Rock in a way no other band had previously attempted and very few others ever managed to do in the years that followed.

This particular album by Colosseum is however especially interesting as far as record collectors and fans of the band are concerned, since it reflects a widely-spread phenomenon, which characterized the record industry at the time. As a result of the "British Invasion", spearheaded by the Beatles and other UK bands in the mid-1960s, the US record market was swamped by UK releases on a regular basis. However, the US record labels often took the liberty to change the UK albums selected to be released in the USA. These changes could involve an alternate cover art and liner notes, a different track order, a different selection of tracks and up to creating new and completely "virtual" albums, which never existed originally, by combining tracks from two or more previously released albums, sometimes even with previously unreleased material.

This album is a great example of the above, as it embodies all of the above methods and as a result becomes a true nightmare for collectors and fans, especially the completists among them. Before "The Grass Is Greener" was released in the US on the DunhillFind albums on this label label, the label already released the band´s debut album "Those Who Are About To Die Salute YouFind albums with this title" in US, but that release was also completely different from the original UK release and in fact included about half of material from the "Valentyne SuiteFind albums with this title" album, before that album was released in the UK a few months later as the first release on the new VertigoFind albums on this label label – the legendary home of Progressive Rock and Art Rock for years to come. Therefore, by the time Dunhill was planning the release of the second US Colosseum album; including the "Valentyne Suite" in its entirety was obviously out of the question, since so much of the album´s material had already been used on the debut US release. So the label decided to use the remaining three tracks from "Valentine Suite" and asked for some new, previously unreleased material, which the band recorded in two separate sessions late 1969 and early 1970 (after Clem ClempsonFind albums by this artist joined the band, replacing James LitherlandFind albums by this artist). These five new tracks, released only in US on the "The Grass Is Greener" album have made it a much sought after collectors´ item ever since.

Those interested in further pursuing these tracks should note, that four of them: "Bolero", "The Grass Is Greener" (which is an alternate version of the 3rd part of "Valentyne Suite"), "Jumping Off The Sun" (with an overdubbed vocals by Chris FarloweFind albums by this artist) and "Rope Ladder To The Moon" were released in UK in 1971 on the Bronze compilation album "The Collectors Colosseum" (ILPS 9173), which also included an unreleased track from the debut album entitled "I Can´t Live Without You". As for "Lost Angeles", one would have to wait another 33 years, until the 2004 release of the "Valentyne Suite" 2CD expanded edition on SanctuaryFind albums on this label (SMEDD 097) or further 2 years after that for the digipak CD version of that album (SMBCD 386). Both these editions include another lost "Valentyne Suite" era track: "Arthur´s Moustache", which had remained unreleased up to that time.

And of course Colosseum is still very much alive. After reuniting in 1994, they continued touring and recording right up to the present day but that is a completely different tale. However, if you can get to hear them play, don´t miss the opportunity to enjoy one of the best bands that ever existed on this planet.

The music is everything one might expect from a Colosseum album; a great amalgam of Jazz / Rock / Blues, which always represented their musical aspirations. Decades of experience are evident in the brilliant instrumental performances, which are as strong as ever, as are the vocals by Farlowe, Clempson and Clarke. The music might be a bit more relaxed and less experimental than on the early alums, but is still excellent in all respects.

Thompson’s saxophone parts are quite different from those by Heckstall-Smith, which somewhat changed the overall sound of the group, but did not make a radical impact, which would change the general concept. This is definitely a playful work by these veterans, which still sounds great and offers a proper last fanfare to one of the best groups of all time.

Colosseum fans won’t miss this album of course, but it should appeal to all Classic Rock fans around the globe, as nobody makes music like this anymore. Wholeheartedly recommended!

Colosseum were one of the most imaginative and intelligent early Fusion / Prog bands ever and managed to create a highly unique sound and musical aesthetics. A perfectly balanced amalgam of Jazz, Rock and Blues, which they created, remains largely unmatched to this very day. Their success can be mostly credited to the perfect blend of their musical personalities and immense collection of diverse talents, as well as the leadership of Hiseman, who was one of the most important British musicians of his generation. I was lucky to know Jon and watching him and the band perform was always a revelation.

This Box Set covers the material included on the band’s first three (or four, depending on how detailed one wants to dig) studio albums and complements perfectly their only live album, which is undoubtedly one of the best live albums ever recorded. In many respects the music included here shows more of the Jazzy aspects of Colosseum than the live album, which is more Blues-Rock oriented. These versions of the tunes are often dramatically different from the versions appearing on the studio album and feature extensive soloing and improvisations.

These six CDs offer an incredible wealth of music, hair-raising instrumental performances and a sublime glimpse at the period when music was at its absolute creative peak. There are but a few groups that managed to achieve the same level of intensity and inventiveness ever since.

For Colosseum fans this Box Set is absolutely essential of course, but the interest goes way beyond just that. British Jazz and Fusion enthusiasts will be also thrilled; as should any music loving person on this planet be as well. This music is beyond recommendation, a true Holy Grail!

CD1 contains four tracks recorded during two separate filmed concerts, the first a TV appearance (tracks 1-2), captured on March 26, 1969, and the second a part of a series of films about British Rock bands (tracks 3-4), captured on May 14, 1970, both of which have nothing to do with the a.m. “lost” album. The CD includes only audio material, which I find it a bit bizarre, as RepertoireFind albums on this label Records could have probably get hold of a license to the video material as well, unless they plan to release that separately?

CD2 contains eight tracks, the first five of which were supposedly intended as the “lost” album and the remaining are demos of three of those tracks. The material was recorded during the hiatus following the release of the largely successful “LiveFind albums with this title” album, which eventually led to the band falling apart by the end of 1971. The material was recorded in spring / summer of 1971, first at the legendary Lansdowne Studios (see the three demos), and later mixed it at the Advision Studios (see track 5) and finally at Jon’s home studio (see tracks1-4). Colosseum performed some of this material during their concerts in late 1971 and it also appeared on Colosseum related albums, like the debut solo album by Heckstall-Smith or the debut album by TempestFind albums by this artist.

Colosseum were just too good to last, and such superb collection of talents was bound to implode / explode, especially when the British Prog and Fusion was a constant swirl of bands being created and falling apart, often without the opportunity to leave recorded legacy behind. Lucky for us, Colosseum fans, there is a true abundance of music in Hiseman’s extensive archives, and of course we enjoyed the sensational reunion later on.

Overall, as on every other archival Colosseum album, there is plenty of sublime material herein to give us a reason to rejoice, especially since much of it are unreleased studio recordings. For Colosseum fans, this is heaven on earth of course, so let’s simply enjoy it!

The combination of five first class musicians produced a band that could play anything between Fusion and Prog with ease and elegance, as this album proves. Although received coldly by the fans of the original Colosseum (probably due to the different sound and the fact that the strong presence of Blues elements was replaced with Rock elements), this is an excellent album in every respect and in retrospect surely deserves much more attention that it did originally. This beautiful new edition almost triples the playing time of the original album by an hour of studio material and a BBC live concert recorded in 1976, all previously unreleased. Highly recommended.

This is an expanded reissue / remaster of the debut album by German keyboardist / composer / bandleader and one of the Godfathers of modern German and European Jazz, Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist and his quintet, called Et CeteraFind albums by this artist. It was recorded in a quintet setting with the same lineup, which recorded the album “Rischkas SoulFind albums with this title” a year earlier and included also guitarist Sigi SchwabFind albums by this artist, bassist Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist, American (resident in Germany) drummer Fred BracefulFind albums by this artist and German drummer Roland WittichFind albums by this artist. The album was recorded in London and presents eight tracks, six of which are original compositions by Dauner and two are by Schwab. The first five tracks were released on the original album and three are previously unreleased bonus tracks from the same session. The album is accompanied by a bi-lingual (German / English) booklet with extensive background about the musicians and historical background.

Dauner / Et Cetera released the brilliant follow up album “KnirschFind albums with this title” in 1972, which featured American guitarist Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist and British drummer Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist, and which is one of Jazz-Rock Fusion absolute classics. The last album, released in 1973 yet by another lineup, was a 2LP Live recording.

The music, as expected, is absolutely brilliant, with a strong Fusiony tinge and Psychedelia, all this in addition to the Jazz and Improvised Music influences. The expanded edition lasts for just about an hour, it offers a wonderful glimpse at the German scene at the time, which was developing with an astonishing speed and variety, expanding the American Jazz tradition into previously unvisited areas. It features the leader playing organ, electric piano and flute (an instrument he will rarely play on later recordings), and Weber playing electric bass guitar, which he also used very rarely in later days. Schwab plays some amazing guitar licks, which put his in the same league as other early Fusion guitarists, like German Volker KriegelFind albums by this artist, or American Larry Coryell, who would record with Dauner later on. The double drums offer a dense, complex rhythmic support, which creates a unique ambience.

Overall, this is a brilliant gem, which captures early European Fusion at its formative days, which is mostly completely unknown to contemporary listeners, but is truly worth its weight in gold. For Fusion enthusiasts, this is an absolute must, which shows the impetus of early days of the genre, and the contrast to its pitiful contemporary condition.

Although the music belongs to the Jazz-Rock genre, it is very far from the "usual" albums and includes a lot of experimentation and innovation. In the forty years perspective this music is even more daring than it was at the time. An absolute must to fans of early European Fusion!

The album was recorded at the Temple Studios and engineered by the studio owner, the legendary Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist. This reissue is remastered and includes one bonus track from the same session which was left out on the original release.

This album emphasizes the great Jazz sensitivity and the improvisational urge Farlowe displayed thru ought his long career, but which remained mostly hidden and overshadowed by his Blues-Rock front. His theatrics and vocal trickery fits the old and well known standards superbly, presenting them with a certain twist and different sensitivities, which are delightful and often surprising. For many Farlowe followers this album is quite an "ear opener" into his abilities which are expressed herein for the first time.

As Farlowe says in the album´s liner notes this was the music he heard in his early days, before he discovered Rhythm And Blues, which obviously influenced him and was partly responsible for his future musical personality. No wonder he decided to pay tribute to his Jazz roots, doing so with all his heart, as this album evidently shows.

Obviously this album is a must to the many Farlowe fans and followers, but it is also definitely deserves to be discovered by the British Jazz followers who are probably completely unaware of its existence. This is such a pleasure to listen to this music and I hope many people will seek it out to join the party!

The music is everything one might expect to hear at the time by British Jazz musicians, who were defining the modern British sound, still very much entangled into the Bebop tradition on one side, and searching to find their own voice on the other. There is enough originality and innovation herein to make it a fascinating historic document of the era.

Of course the three quartet tracks with Bruce are especially interesting, both because his rare appearance in the strict Jazz idiom and his very open, almost free composition included here, which is a preamble to his wonderful “Things We LikeFind albums with this title” album recorded a couple of years later. The quintet tracks are slightly less challenging, but the title track, which lasts for twelve minutes, is a masterpiece in every respect.

The personal performances are stellar, including Hiseman, who takes a long solo both with the quartet and the quintet. Although the quintet offers a “bigger” sound, the piano is somewhat under-recorded and lost in the mix, which is a pity. But the overall sound quality however is excellent and the music sounds bright and clear.

Overall this is the most interesting CD release by the new Jazz In Britain label so far, hopefully pointing in the right direction. For British Jazz fans, who wish to learn more about the birth of the unique character of late 1960s sound, which revolutionized the idiom, this album is the “missing link” and an absolute must have.

People familiar with Hartley´s other recordings will definitely want to have this one in their collection.

The music is a wonderful amalgam of melodic themes, spiced with Brazilian rhythmic influences and arranged with a Brass-Rock, Funky and Groovy accents, led by Hiseman’s dynamic drumming and featuring great soloing by the local musicians. Although on the lighter side of the Jazz spectrum, the album is full of excellent music and a great trip down the memory lane, as well as another musical treasure in Hiseman’s recorded legacy.

The solos on this album were all recorded during live concerts played by the United Jazz + Rock EnsembleFind albums by this artist, an multinational collective of European Jazz musicians, of which Jon was a founding member, and concerts by the superb Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist´s ParaphernaliaFind albums by this artist ensemble (Barbara being of course Jon´s wife and life companion). The original LP edition of this album consisted of four tracks, two of which were full drum solos (lasting sixteen and eleven minutes respectively) and two part-solos included for their uniqueness. This CD version of the album was extended with one more full solo (also timing almost sixteen minutes).

An album of drum solos might seem excessive (to say the least) at first, but anybody who appreciates the Art of music and the virtuosity involved in playing it will surely be able to appreciate the contents of this album. It is not only about Hiseman´s technical skills, but first and foremost about his musicality and his ability to "play" the drums rather than bang of them simply marking the tempi. Each of these solos is completely unique and tells a different story, with different moods, emotion and explorations involved.

People who are experienced concert goers know that drum solos are usually just an opportunity to get the public excited with a seemingly dazzling display of drumming virtuosity, but in most cases have almost nothing to do with the actual music being played before and after the solo; in case of Hiseman´s solos there is as much music in them as when the full band is playing.

These solos tell many stories about using the drum as an instrument on many different levels. They show how a melody can be played using drums, what polyrhythmic drumming means, how important controlling the dynamics is and finally how Rock, Jazz and Fusion merge together in the hands and legs of one fantastic drummer.

In case you get completely bored and depressed by the bullshit you are exposed to on the Media on the day to day level, simply reach out and put this album in the player – I promise the world will instantly and inevitably turn into a better place.

Clempson still plays some superb guitar licks that very few other guitar players around are able to compete with, Clarke sings with great sensitivity and Hiseman, one the greatest drummers of all time, as well as an excellent recording engineer and producer, does a perfect job as well. Sadly, this was his last recording before his untimely death, shortly after the album was released.

For Colosseum fans, British Prog / Jazz-Rock Fusion enthusiasts, guitar freaks and all good music lovers around the world this album is a breath of fresh air, although it sits firmly in the tradition established well over five decades earlier. The saying “they don’t make music like this anymore” obviously does not apply to this album. Brilliant stuff!

The album was recorded live at the Pizza Express in London, on February 20th, 2018.

But the story behind this album goes back fifty years into the past, when the almost identical lineup of the quintet (with George KhanFind albums by this artist in place of Skidmore) released the album “Local ColourFind albums with this title”, which was recorded a couple of years earlier, on the pioneering independent record label ESPFind albums on this label Disk, founded in 1963 and run by a Jewish NY lawyer and Avant-Garde Music protagonist Bernard StollmanFind albums by this artist, and which yours truly proudly stored in his collection ever since.

That album was the first modern / Avant-Garde British Jazz album to be released in the US, together with several other modern European Jazz albums, including even recordings originating from behind the Iron Curtain. At that time most Americans were completely unaware of the existence of modern Jazz outside of the US. It was also the first recording, which features Surman. Five of the compositions on that album are also present on the album, approached in a completely new and different way.

Despite the fact that the musicians are five decades older this time, they seem not to have lost any of the vigor and passion, and with the added experience of a lifetime the music obviously gained an unprecedented level of depth and finesse. The new album also offers a closure of sorts, as it was the last recording by Hiseman, before his tragic death just four months after this album was recorded.

Overall, this is a fine Avant-Garde Jazz album, beautifully executed by these superb players, which will certainly be a cherished addition to every serious British Jazz collection, and the unusual circumstances surrounding it add to its historic value, serving as a half-Century time bridge between the early days of modern British Jazz and now. Under Ardley’s visionary leadership the band developed the foundations for the modern European Jazz big band sound. Although incorporating the classic American big band tradition of Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist and the more modern approach of Gil EvansFind albums by this artist, Ardley managed to steer his band into uncharted territory, using his unique approach to instrumentation and bold arrangements.

At the time this album was recorded live at London’s Camden Jazz Festival in May of 1970, Ardley was already moving rapidly towards the exploding Jazz-Rock Fusion genre, creating one of the first, and magnificent at that, examples of Jazz-Rock Fusion big band. Compared to American bands at the time, like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist or ChicagoFind albums by this artist, Ardley’s approach is definitely much more refined and orchestral and uses a wider arsenal of the Jazz vocabulary, being therefore much more sophisticated. Seven of the tracks present on that album are also included here, which turns this recording into an updated live version of that timeless classic. The original recording tape of this concert had quite a few technical problems, but was painstakingly and beautifully restored to life with an exceptional sound quality considering the circumstances under which it was recorded. One should be truly grateful to the producer of this immensely important historical material for making it available to us, the fans of NJO, Colosseum and British Jazz in general. This is indispensable legacy of the period and a must to any follower of British Jazz music.

This is the second and also the last formal album by the seminal British Jazz Orchestra called New Jazz OrchestraFind albums by this artist or NJOFind albums by this artist for short. Directed by the legendary composer / arranger / bandleader Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist the NJO was probably the most important singular British Jazz ensemble, which shaped the way British and European Jazz developed in the late 1960s.

Despite the fact that the number of people, who are familiar with this epic recording, will hardly fill up an average British pub, it is still one of the best and more importantly revolutionary Jazz albums of all times, certainly as far as British Jazz is concerned. The fact that the album, which was released on LP in 1969 and almost immediately after disappeared from the shelves, had to wait for 45 years for its debut CD reissue confirms its anonymity and obscurity. And yet for the handful of British Jazz enthusiasts it always was the magnum opus of the British Jazz resurgence, when the music emerged for the first time as a truly new Art form, related to but fully independent from the American Jazz tradition.

Why "new"? The origin of the name is not entirely clear but NJO was new indeed; it included a new generation of British Jazz musicians, which arrived on the scene mostly in the 1960s and had very little in common with the older "swing" generation, which completely dominated the British scene up to that period, and which was entirely immersed in the American tradition, strengthened by the presence of American bands in Britain during the WWII period. Several Jazz Big Bands and orchestras were active on the British scene since the 1920s and well into the 1960s, some quite excellent and even extraordinary, but those limited the artistic scope to imitating the trends originating across the big pond. By the time this album was recorded the NJO was about five years old. His outstanding arrangements of classic Jazz pieces are all masterpieces of rare beauty and sophistication and he manages to get out of the band so much more that an average US big band playing similar material. Of course the soloist, who are all quite outstanding, add another dimension to the overall sound, which is truly heavenly.

This is the first album by NJO and includes mostly standards by American (Miles DavisFind albums by this artist, John LewisFind albums by this artist) and British composers, but one of Ardley’s compositions is also included. Ardley, who was an admirer of Gil EvansFind albums by this artist, developed a distinctive orchestral (rather than traditional big band) sound with NJO, using the various sections of the band to complement each other’s sound and tonality.

The overall effect is absolutely stunning and this is one of my all time favorite big band albums. This is essential listening to all big band fans and recommended to all Jazz listeners out there. A true gem!

NJOFind albums by this artist), recorded in 1968 and eight by the Neil Ardley GroupFind albums by this artist, recorded in 1970. Five of the NJO tracks appear in a studio version on their 2nd studio album “Le Dejeuner Sur L`herbeFind albums with this title”. The first seven of the Neil Ardley Group tracks, which were composed by pianist / composer Mike TaylorFind albums by this artist and are a song cycle / Jazz & Poetry suite, were sadly never recorded in the studio and released on an album. Taylor tragically died just a few months before this music was recorded.

The lineup of these two ensembles reads like a Who’s Who of the British Jazz at the end of the 1960s, some still very young at the time, but already experienced musicians, who were going to shape the British Jazz scene in the decades to come. The specific idiosyncrasies and “Britishness” of the new epoch is simply encapsulated in every note played here. It is also a superb display of the individual talents of these magnificent musicians, those who are still with us and sadly those who departed, like Thompson and Hiseman, who met as members of the NJO and created one of the British Jazz “power couples” or Ardley and Carr, whose giant talents are deeply missed.

Overall, this is an absolute must have album for every British Jazz collector, especially in view of the fact that some of the music captured herein is not available anywhere else. For the cognoscenti, the album offers endless hints and interconnections, like a sensational version of the song “Jumping Off The Sun”, which became an anthem for the legendary ColosseumFind albums by this artist, which was founded by Hiseman and Heckstall-Smith, and included Reeves and Thompson, and so on…

This is an archival album, which presents recordings by the brilliant British Jazz pianist / composer Howard RileyFind albums by this artist, recorded with his trio with bassist Barry GuyFind albums by this artist and drummers Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist or Alan JacksonFind albums by this artist. The album presents thirteen tracks, five with the trio with Hiseman recorded in 1968 and eight with the trio with Jackson recorded between 1969 and 1970. Most of the material was composed by Riley or Guy, but there are also a couple of standards and one tune by Annette PeacockFind albums by this artist. The material originates from the first three albums by the trio: “DiscussionsFind albums with this title”, “AngleFind albums with this title” and “The Day Will ComeFind albums with this title”, all essential British Jazz recordings.

Riley is by far my favorite British Jazz Avant-Gardist, and his extensive recorded legacy is one of the pillars of the genre. He is mostly known for his work in the classic Jazz piano trio format, like the two trios preset here and the later trio with Guy and Tony OxleyFind albums by this artist. But he recorded in other ensembles with the crème de la crème of the British scene over the years and practically all his albums are instant classics. Sadly, my impression is that he never received the proper recognition as one of the Godfathers of the genre and many of his albums are almost completely unknown.

For me, Riley is one of the most remarkable Jazz Artists, blessed by a remarkable ability to think out of the box. Although that specific quality should be integral to all Free Jazz / Improvised Music / Avant-Gardists, in fact is rather a rare quality, and many musicians belonging to these genres repeat patterns rather than inventing them. From the very early days of his career, like on these sessions, Riley’s approach to improvising was completely innovative and unlike anything / anybody else. His playing, completely Free on one hand, is also superbly melodic, on the other, despite how far he moves away from the source / original melody. This is particularly easy to spot in his interpretations of standards, but even more fascination while playing his original compositions.

This album is a wonderful document, especially in view of the fact that this music is previously unreleased and offers a superb addition / extension to the three a.m. studio albums by Riley, which are of course also timeless gems. Although reissued, they are not easy to find, and absolutely worth the effort.

Overall, this is an absolute must for every British Jazz lover and Avant-Garde Jazz enthusiast, anywhere on this planet. It offers some of the cleverest, most sophisticated and aesthetically satisfying music, which lost nothing of its power and zetz over time, and is still a stunning listening experience!

HOWARD RILEY ~ DISCUSSIONS

This is a reissue of the debut album by the seminal British Jazz pianist / composer Howard RileyFind albums by this artist, recorded in a classic piano trio setting with two legendary British Jazz icons: bassist Barry GuyFind albums by this artist and drummer Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist. The original album released in 1968 on the tiny OpportunityFind albums on this label label owned by producer Chris WellandFind albums by this artist had only 99 copies pressed and soon after became a highly sought-after collector´s item. It was reissued semi-legally on CD in 2007 but this is the first proper reissue of this album, which is newly remastered and includes two bonus tracks with previously unreleased recordings by another Howard Riley trio, recorded seven years prior to this album being recorded. The original album presents eight tracks, some of which are originals by Riley and others are the trio´s interpretations of standards, but only keen Jazz connoisseurs will be able to recognize them as such.

Riley´s arrival in London in 1967 placed him right at the epicenter of the burgeoning British Jazz scene, which was already developing rapidly since several years. His unusual approach to music, both as a performer and a composer, perfectly suited the "age of change" British Jazz was undergoing at the time, while emancipating itself from a decades-long association with American Jazz, while mostly copying the patterns developed across the pond. A new generation of young British Jazz musicians, Riley amongst them, decided to take matters into their own hands and move along, leaving the American Jazz tradition far behind.

Listening to this music almost half a Century after it was recorded clearly shows how European Jazz was about to find its own Avant-Garde, almost unrelated to the American Free Jazz, which more or less completely came to a hold with the death of John Coltrane. The European approach was not based on intense improvisation, which slowly stripped away all melodic content, but on a search which would amalgamate Jazz and contemporary European Classical music 20th Century innovations into a new idiom.

The performance of this trio clearly shows what collective improvisation is all about with the musicians behaving as a one three headed body, being in sync rhythmically and mentally at all times. Hiseman, who was about soon after to immerse into Jazz-Rock for the rest of his life, plays here without inhibitions and shows his incredible versatility. Guy sounds on this album as if he played Free Jazz for decades, obviously finding his natural element, which he never left to this day. His virtuosity and inventiveness at such early age (he was 20 years old at the time) is simply phenomenal.

In retrospect this is one of the iconic British Jazz recordings, which should be a part of a decent music collection by every British Jazz enthusiast. The fact that this music is available again is nothing short of a miracle. Good job Peter MuirFind albums by this artist, chapeau!

The trio performs a set consisting of several Riley’s original compositions and a few standards – these well disguised as appropriate for a free jazz setting. Some clearly melodic elements are still present on these tracks, as the adventurous full-blown Avant-Garde was yet to come, but this is a classic of the genre in every sense. The interplay between the three master musicians is phenomenal and considering their tender age (at the time of this recording) this is a monster achievement. Absolutely essential for all free jazz lovers, especially for connoisseurs of the UK branch of the genre.

This is the 11th studio album by the iconic British group Soft MachineFind albums by this artist, recorded after a thirty-seven years’ gap since their previous studio album “Land Of CockayneFind albums with this title” from 1981. It is also their first album since the interim Soft Machine LegacyFind albums by this artist name was dropped in order to return the original name. The group comprises of SM veterans: drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist, guitarist John EtheridgeFind albums by this artist and bassist Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist, with saxophonist / keyboardist Theo TravisFind albums by this artist completing the lineup. The album presents thirteen tracks, including new interpretations of older SM pieces, all composed by the group’s members. The album was recorded at the Temple Studio owned by the lamented Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist, and engineered by him.

The music is a natural / organic continuation of the Soft Machine tradition, with a somewhat updated sound and ambiance, but easily recognizable as much as likeable by the groups many fans, who cling to the fond memories. The music of SM was always completely timeless and as such does not need to search for new pastures. It lost perhaps some of its Avant-Garde tendencies, which were dominant at the early days, but gained more melodic and harmonic richness and of course the experience of half a Century of music making, which leaves a significant mark on the music.

Overall, this is a most welcome “comeback” of sorts, although there was a continuous presence of Soft Machine in one way or another during the years, mostly by the numerous reissues of their live recordings, admittedly of varying quality, as well as solo recordings by the band members and various “related” projects. This is a first rate new material, every bit as satisfying as everything the group recorded in the past, different but familiar, exactly what the many fans of the group love to hear.

This is an archival album by British Jazz pianist / composer Mike TaylorFind albums by this artist, one of the mythical figures of the British Jazz scene, due to his tragic death at a ridiculous young age and an extremely limited recorded legacy. Taylor recorded only two albums (“PendulumFind albums with this title” 1966 and “TrioFind albums with this title” 1967) before he died at the age of 30 in 1969.

The album presents a live recording of five tracks, captured nine months before this lineup recorded Taylor’s debut album “Pendulum”. He is accompanied by saxophonist Dave TomlinFind albums by this artist, bassist Tony ReevesFind albums by this artist and drummer Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist. Of the five tracks one is a standard and four are original composition by Taylor, two of which appear on the tribute album “Mike Taylor RememberedFind albums with this title” by Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist.

Although the music on this album is by far not as revolutionary or groundbreaking as on “Pendulum”, it is a time capsule of a work in progress, which eventually brought the quartet together into the perfection demonstrated on the debut album and which would make Taylor to crystalize his musical ideas to break the barriers of “swing” and John ColtraneFind albums by this artist’s influence, to achieve the Freedom the debut albums so potently demonstrates.

The sound quality of the recording is far from ideal, but certainly good enough to enjoy the music and hear some details. Hiseman is way up in the mix while Reeves is almost inaudible, and the piano is also far behind the saxophone, which takes most of the soloing space. The deconstruction of Thelonious MonkFind albums by this artist’s tune is definitely not as radical as on the debut, but comparing the two versions again shows a path Taylor and his quartet were taking.

Overall this is splendid document of the era and the formative years of independent British Jazz, which is not following the American influence any more than absolutely necessary. Tomlin bravely takes upon himself the front-line responsibilities, with Taylor pushing the music from behind, and obviously exploring new ground. The rhythm section is absolutely perfect for the job, with Reeves’ musicality and Hiseman’s technical brilliance laying out a firm basis for the two soloists.

However, the album also shows clearly how difficult it was to boldly step into the Free / open playing at this time, and the music is at all times strongly bonded to “swinging” at all cost, despite the relative freedom Taylor demonstrates while playing his odd chord sequences behind the swinging foreground.

Overall this is a first class discovery, which blissfully appears on record five and a half decades later, which should make every true British Jazz fan happy. Kudos to Jazz In Britain for digging this one out and bringing it up to the surface!

Pianist / composer Mike TaylorFind albums by this artist was the most enigmatic figure on the British Jazz scene in the 1960s. His genius was almost completely unknown to most and just a handful of close friends / musicians had the opportunity to work with him and hear his music. His eccentric personality, which bordered on the mentally unstable and his tragic death at a ridiculous young age cut his career short, leaving a legacy of just two albums, of which this is the first.

Anybody listening to this album will surely realize that this is one of the most daring and earliest modern British Jazz recordings and it parallels (in time and complexity) to the most advanced Avant Garde Jazz experiments happening across the Atlantic. Taylor’s unprecedented and unconventional approach to music was so ahead of its time that it’s truly mind-boggling.

The quartet playing on this recording includes Taylor on piano, Dave TomlinFind albums by this artist on soprano saxophone, Tony ReevesFind albums by this artist on bass and Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist on drums (the last two were of course to form the band ColosseumFind albums by this artist a few years later). The sound of the quartet is somewhat similar to John ColtraneFind albums by this artist’s legendary quartet, but Taylor plays quite differently than McCoy TynerFind albums by this artist of course. The music includes three Jazz standards (on what used to be Side A) and three original compositions by Taylor (on Side B).

The treatment of the standards is an absolute hair-raising experience, with Taylor de-composing / de-structuring the original harmony and re-assembling the pieces together in a completely new way. His original compositions are awesome as well, exposing a new musical universe. The entire album is a knockout from start to finish and listening to it over 40 years after it was recorded should still produce Goosebumps on every sensitive listener’s skin.

BTW people unaware of Jon Hiseman’s early Jazz days should check out his recording with another great British pianist Howard RileyFind albums by this artist on Howard’s debut album DiscussionsFind albums with this title. Taylor was about to record only one more album, called simply TrioFind albums with this title, with Jon Hiseman and Jack BruceFind albums by this artist on bass (Bruce was very much involved with the British Jazz scene before his adventure with CreamFind albums by this artist – see Jack’s debut album Things We LikeFind albums with this title), who was a friend of Taylor, as were the other members of the Graham Bond OrganizationFind albums by this artist. Also it’s really strange that Taylor’s fate was in many ways similar to that of Bond’s, both ending their lives in a suicide / accident, following a long period of mental instability. This album is a central piece of the puzzle forming the birth of modern British Jazz and no serious follower of that scene can afford not to have this album in his collection. Beyond essential!

The album, taken from a rehearsal tape recorded by Reeves shortly before the recording of Taylor’s debut album “PendulumFind albums with this title”, presents five tracks in the same running order as the studio album, preceded by two tracks that do not appear on the album, together seven tracks, five of which are Taylor’s originals and two are standards. The album includes an extensive thirty-two pages long booklet, written by Richard Morton JackFind albums by this artist, which describes in great detail the sad story of Taylor’s life, his mental illness and tragically premature death. The tape, incidentally found by Reeves fifty-five years after it was recorded, is a mono recording, but the sound quality is not as poor as some people claim and the music can be heard loud and clear.

British Jazz enthusiasts will most probably have a copy of “Pendulum” already in their collection, so this album does not offer a great historical added value, but on the other hand, considering how little music Taylor managed to record during his lifetime, every note on this album becomes invaluable.

The music is of course a wonderful glimpse at the birth of modern British Jazz, influenced by the Free Jazz explosion in American Jazz at the time, but reshaped and domesticated into the proto-modernistic British experience, which eventually emancipated British Jazz from the American bondage. The performances are somewhat more spontaneous than those on the studio album and all showcase the great talents of the four musicians involved.

Overall, this is a most welcome addition to Mike Taylor’s limited recorded legacy and British Jazz fans surely will appreciate the fortunate incidents behind this release. Thank God for the invention of sound recording, which allows us to immortalize the music we all love so much. Wholeheartedly recommended!

As a result, it is a companion album to the tremendous 14CD Box Set “Live At The BBCFind albums with this title” by Barbara Thompson, released in 2020 by RepertoireFind albums on this label Records, offering material uncovered after the Box Set was released. This album, released by the Jazz In BritainFind albums on this label label, is a completely non-commercial release, with all profits from the album going to the Cure Parkinson’s Trust, a moving gesture by all the people involved, including Barbara’s and Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist’s daughter Ana GraceyFind albums by this artist and Jazz In Britain founder John ThurlowFind albums by this artist. We all still mourn Barbara’s and Jon’s untimely departures of course.

The first two tracks present the Group EFind albums by this artist, which comprised of (in addition to Barbara) vocalist Pepi LemerFind albums by this artist, pianist Peter LemerFind albums by this artist, bassist Johnny DyaniFind albums by this artist and drummer Laurie AllanFind albums by this artist. The music is Avant-Garde Jazz, with superb vocal parts by Lemer, who sadly is often forgotten, but was one of the most interesting Jazz vocalist of the period.

The next three tracks present a suite for a Big Band, called “The Awakening”, co-composed by Barbara and Jon. The band features a dreamy lineup of eleven instrumentalists and a vocalist – no other than my beloved Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist – which reads like a Who’s Who of the modern British Jazz and is conducted by Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist. The players are: trumpeters Ian HamerFind albums by this artist, Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist and Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist, trombonist Derek WadsworthFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Don RendellFind albums by this artist and Barbara Thompson, cellist Charles TunnellFind albums by this artist, pianist Howard RileyFind albums by this artist, vibraphonist Bill Le SageFind albums by this artist, bassist Jeff ClyneFind albums by this artist and drummer Jon Hiseman. The vocal parts by Winstone are, not surprisingly, my favorite jewels, but the entire suite is simply divine and the fact it was discovered and now released is no less than sensational.

The last five tracks are by Barbara’s group JubiabaFind albums by this artist, which comprised of (in addition to Barbara) trumpeters George ChisholmFind albums by this artist and Ian CarrFind albums by this artist, Wadsworth, Le Sage, Peter Lemer, bassist Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist, drummer Martin DrewFind albums by this artist and percussionist Trevor TomkinsFind albums by this artist. It presents the early version of the band, which was essentially dedicated to combining Jazz with World Music influences, mostly Latin. As far as I am aware, this is the earliest recordings by Jubiaba captured on tape.

Overall, this is an absolute jewel from start to finish and an absolute must to all British Jazz enthusiasts, and in retrospect one of the most surprising and important releases by the Jazz In Britain label so far. The Big Band piece alone is a beacon symbolizing the birth of the modern British Jazz, with everything it stands for: ingenuity, originality, groundbreaking musical thinking and enormous talent. This is a monumental 14CD Box Set by British saxophonist / flautist / composer / bandleader Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist, the mightiest female heroine of the British Jazz scene in the last six decades. The Box Set collects 27 radio broadcasts recorded between February 1969 and June 1990, an incredible document not only of Thompson’s incredible career, but basically of the entire two decades of the most intense British Jazz history. Painstakingly collected, organized and remastered / restored, the music is an orgy of some of the most intense music played on the British Isles at the time.

The music is performed by the absolute Who’s Who of the British Jazz scene at the time, starting with Barbara’s husband Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist, who stood by her side since they married in 1967 for many years until his tragically premature death in 2018. But reading the credits of the participating musicians is like reading an encyclopedia of British Jazz. Thomson appears here as a member of the New Jazz OrchestraFind albums by this artist (NJOFind albums by this artist) and groups led by other musicians, but principally as leader of her own ensembles, including JubiabaFind albums by this artist and ParaphernaliaFind albums by this artist. Many compositions appearing here were her own and many of them are previously unreleased.

Of course it is rather futile to describe such vast amount of music, all of which is obviously brilliant, so rather than doing so I can only recommend to every British Jazz fan to get a copy of this Box Set as long as it is available. It includes hours upon hours of superb musicianship and infinite creativity, that must not be forgotten.

This is also a splendid opportunity to thank the BBC for supporting British Jazz (and British music in general) for so many years, recording the music and broadcasting it consistently and on the way collecting a bottomless vault of musical treasures, which see the light of day often only decades later. A huge portion of British Jazz recordings exist solely due to all this activity.

Overall, this is an absolute treasure chest of music, which deserves to be heard by future generations. It is also a beautiful example of dedication and painstaking work by many people, who contributed to create this release, and of course all deserve our thanks for making it happen.

The material presents three saxophone quartets, in five, six and four movements, a total of nineteen tracks. The music was recorded by Barbara’s husband Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist at St. Margaret’s Church, Chipstead, Surrey and the album, also produced by Hiseman, offers spectacular sound quality.

Thompson, primarily known as one of the most prominent British Jazz musicians and leader of ensembles, had also less familiar sides to her extensive musical persona, like her interest in Classical Music, which is brilliantly exposed on this album. Following her diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease in 1997, which she incredibly bravely fought until her death in 2022, with the understanding that her career of playing live music will suffer, she decided to devote more time into composing, which, among other things, resulted in composing these three saxophone quartets in the early 2000s.

The structure of these quartets follows to some degree the concept of a classic string quartet, with four instruments, each playing a distinct part, performing in perfect harmony. Of course in the case of the saxophones, the range between the soprano and the baritone offers a much wider scale and infinite possibilities, which Thompson facilitates herein with pure genius.

Although the music is strictly written, following the Classical formulas, and there is no improvisation per se, the music manages to swing and swirl in a Jazzy manner, so characteristic to Thompson’s inner self. So despite the music being Classical by form, it is Jazzy by emotion and soul, somewhat in a similar fashion like “Rhapsody In Blue”, by George GershwinFind albums by this artist, which is one of the most brilliant examples of Classical Music, which swings madly.

The music is of course absolutely wonderful, from start to finish, superbly performed by the members of the quartet, and offers an emotional depth and aesthetic perfection, which creates a feeling of elation and bliss on an exceptional scale.

Overall, this is a sublime piece of music and perhaps another way to remember Barbara Thompson for all she has done for music lovers during her life and eternity, leaving such a brilliant legacy. This album is a breathtaking musical experience!

Let’s start with placing everything in a historical perspective…

By the time the concert, which this album presents, was recorded, Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist’s ParaphernaliaFind albums by this artist was one of the leading instrumental ensembles on the European Jazz / Fusion scene, with an extensive recorded legacy to their credit. Following the release of their first three albums (two studio recordings and one live outing) on the MCAFind albums on this label label, Paraphernalia joined the roster of the small German independent label veraBraFind albums on this label Records, owned and run by Cologne based Vera BrandesFind albums by this artist, one of the most dynamic female Jazz activists on the European scene at the time, manager, concert organizer and record producer, who founded CMPFind albums on this label (1977), veraBra (1980) and IntuitionFind albums on this label (1984) labels, which released hundreds of albums, including some of the finest European Jazz / Fusion recordings of the era. The cooperation with Brandes opened many concert opportunities for Paraphernalia, which resulted in their popularity in Europe, and especially so in Germany, to exceed the success on their British home turf. It is not surprising therefore, that the German NDR Broadcasting corporation was happy to invite them to take part in their highly popular “Rockpalast” series of live TV broadcasts, which is the source of the material on this album.

In 1993 Paraphernalia released their fourth album on veraBra, entitled “Everlasting FlameFind albums with this title”. Recorded, mixed and produced by Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist at his Temple Music studio in Spring / Summer of 1993, it featured the quintet lineup of the ensemble, with Barbara Thompson on saxophones and flutes, keyboardist Peter LemerFind albums by this artist, guitarist Malcolm MacFarlaneFind albums by this artist, bassist Paul WestwoodFind albums by this artist and Jon Hiseman on drums and percussion, the same lineup, which is featured on this live recording. The set list includes four compositions, which originate from the new album, which they were promoting at the time, one composition from their previous album “BreathlessFind albums with this title” (1991), another one from their live album “A Cry From The Heart – Live In LondonFind albums with this title” (1988) and finally one track, which will become the title track of their future album “Shifting SandsFind albums with this title” (1998), their debut on Intuition Records.

Paraphernalia was such a superb musical vehicle not only due to the fact that it combined the talents of some of the finest British Jazz / Fusion musicians, and was led by an extraordinary instrumentalist and composer. Yes, all these elements were the necessary ingredients to create excellent music, but the true explosive amalgamation was also the result of the personal and musical relationship between Barbara and Jon, one of the most extraordinary musical couples of all time.

It was a true match made in heaven, when they met as members of the New Jazz OrchestraFind albums by this artist (NJOFind albums by this artist), directed by Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist. Stricken not only by her beauty, but more profoundly by her extraordinary talent as a musician, Jon proposed and they were married in 1967, a marriage that lasted for half a Century until his tragically early and unexpected death in 2018. During their entire lifetime together they cooperated in many musical projects, complimenting each other. When Hiseman founded the iconic ColosseumFind albums by this artist with the late Dick Heckstall-SmithFind albums by this artist, Barbara, although not a formal group member, played on all early Colosseum albums as a guest musician. When the German pianist / composer Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist founded the revolutionary Pan-European United Jazz + Rock EnsembleFind albums by this artist, both Jon and Barbara joined and were members of the ensemble for years. When Barbara founded the Paraphernalia ensemble, although unable to join at the very early days, Jon joined soon after and became the pillar of the band. When Dick Heckstall-Smith retired from the re-united Colosseum, Barbara stepped bravely in, despite her serious health problem, to replace him. And then of course, they both had their separate projects as well, which they mutually respected. This intertwined musical / personal life-path is a true symbol of Barbara and Jon as a couple, which resulted always in a whole much greater than the sum of its parts.

Keyboardist Peter Lemer, who had a long personal relationship with the couple, remembers: “Onstage, Jon was unwavering in his commitment to quality. He deployed the best technology for sound and stage setup, ensuring that both the band and the audience had the best possible experience. His care extended especially to Barbara, creating an environment where she could perform with freedom and power. As Barbara faced the challenges of Parkinson’s disease, Jon’s support became even more essential. He threw himself into understanding the condition, building relationships with specialists, and even speaking at Parkinson’s symposiums, so knowledgeable that he was often mistaken for a consultant. This journey is poignantly captured in the film ‘Playing Against Time’. Through it all, their love for each other and their shared passion for music shone through. Jon’s protectiveness and Barbara’s resilience formed the foundation of their personal and professional lives. It was a privilege to be part of their journey, to share their laughter, their dedication, and their extraordinary ability to bring people together through music."

Guitarist Malcolm MacFarlane remembers: “By 1994, the year of this featured concert, I’d been in the band for 6 years. If I’m remembering correctly, this is the tour that extended to over 110 dates! As an improvising musician this was a real gift to be given the chance to develop your skills so intensely and ‘for real’ in a sustained way. I left the band the following year. Barbara and Jon were very keen for me to stay but all good things as they say… The news of Jon’s passing was such a shock, I honestly thought that he’d outlive us all as his energy levels and drive were truly inspiring. Barbara’s diagnosis and spirited fight against her condition was also inspirational. These two formed such a huge part of my growth from being a recently graduated music student into adulthood and being ‘grown up’, that after a 7-year working relationship I’m not only deeply indebted to them but I genuinely loved them both too."

So here we are, with Barbara, Jon and the rest of Paraphernalia playing their hearts out in front of an enthusiastic audience, captured for eternity on this album. The album was beautifully and lovingly put together, including the extensive booklet, by Ana GraceyFind albums by this artist, Barbara’s and Jon’s daughter, and includes numerous photographs, press clippings and other memorabilia, to commemorate Barbara’s passing in 2022, which was deeply mourned by her family and friends.

Paraphernalia was Barbara’s vehicle to present her wide range of compositions, which amalgamated many diverse influences, from Classical Music, World Music and of course Jazz in all its splendor of sub-genres. She was a remarkable instrumentalist, with a superb feel and outstanding improvisational abilities. She was an integral part of the British Jazz scene since the 1960s and her numerous recordings as a leader and sidewoman are a beacon of excellency and talent. She is also a great heroine as far as her personal fight with the Parkinson’s disease, which sadly overshadowed her life during the last period of her life.

Overall, this is a great opportunity to re-visit this live album, which reflects the spirit of one of the best British bands active at the time, and enjoy the superb performances by Barbara, Colin, Dill and John, which of course I had the immense pleasure to listen to in person many a time. I am sure many Paraphernalia fans will enjoy listening to this album again and now with the bonus album as a cherry on top, this is truly irresistible. With three trumpeters on board the Big Band sound is even more potent than on the two earlier albums and the brass arrangements are more complex. All members of the group get an opportunity to solo, but the main idea is to present an “ensemble” sound, rather than a collection of individuals. The fact that the ensemble sounds as good live as in the studio testifies as to the remarkable level of musicianship and the joy of playing together.

The album is a tribute to the relatively little known Swiss 18th Century painter Caspar WolfFind albums by this artist, and each of the songs relates to a specific painting by Wolf, hence the title.

Musically the album is a continuation of the long tradition of Jazz albums created by the Westbrook couple, full of incredible music and brilliant lyrics, which are one of the British Jazz recorded legacy highlights. Kate’s intense perception of European Culture and Art is a unique phenomenon, which deserves to be admired in its all manifestations.

The intimate lineup of vocals / piano and two saxophones emphasizes Mike Westbrook’s genius as a composer, and the delivery lacks absolutely nothing to create a full-fledged Jazz performance, including fierce soloing. The two saxophonist perform genius orchestral parts playing unisono or accompanying each other, with a breathtaking efficiency and genius.

Overall, this is another masterpiece by the Westbrooks, who seem to be completely immune to time and its tides, ignoring fads and fashions and simply doing their own unique thing. Their legacy is a treasure chest of European culture, which is timeless and universal, always ahead of their time and contemporary. An absolute Godsend and a must to any serious music lover!

The album´s artwork features a painting by Kate, which reveals another facet of her artistic activity.

The music, which is based on a piece originally commissioned by the British Delta Saxophone QuartetFind albums by this artist (Of which Chris Caldwell is a member), is an amazing amalgam of Jazz and contemporary Classical Music with a pinch of Rock, beautifully melodic and at times even romantic. Kate´s lyrics, which are mostly morbid and bitter, create a strange contrast to the musical background, with the overall effect being extremely potent.

The individual and collective performances by the members of the saxophone quartet are all superb, handling the difficult and multilayered compositions with ease and elegance and in perfect harmony. The drums, used sparingly, emphasize some rhythmic characteristics of the complex music and ornament the overall ambience during the down tempo parts.

Kate´s lyrics deal with the Biblical notion of "original sin", which haunts humanity continuously over time and stands behind the major problems we face, both as individuals and societies, ultimately bound for destruction. Some of these ideas appear in her works consistently over the years.

Overall this album is a true piece of Art of the highest level. The music, the lyrics and the artwork combined are a testimony of haute culture, which characterizes the legacy of the Westbrooks, which spans over several decades.

This album completely slipped under my radar at the time it was released and I thank Mike Westbrook for graciously sending me a copy of this gem. If anybody else misses it in their Westbrook collection, the time to seal the gap is now!

This is an incredible album that celebrates eight decades of life and six decades of musical activity by British pianist / composer / bandleader Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist, one of the most iconic figures of British / European Jazz and in retrospect an unstoppable innovator, who is always ahead of the time of his contemporaries. The album is a live recording of a show, which features the music of Mike Westbrook and lyrics by his wife Kate WestbrookFind albums by this artist, performed by an orchestra consisting of twenty one musicians and called The "Uncommon OrchestraFind albums by this artist". The 2CD album presents eight original compositions, four on each CD, one of which is over half an hour in duration. The music was recorded, mixed and edited by the recently departed Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist, who closely cooperated with Westbrook for many years of his life.

Westbrook´s big ensemble music is always an amazing amalgam of marching Brass Bands, Circus Music, Funeral Bands, Cabaret and Vaudeville, modem day Opera and Jazz Big Bands. This has not changed much over time, as a concept, but his music travelled far and wide stylistically over the years, always being exceptionally creative and completely unique. The music on this album is no different, and presents a highly complex musical story, which keeps enfolding in front of the listener like an Opera plot.

The Orchestra, which is basically a large brass section supported by a double rhythm section (two guitars, two basses and two drums) performs superbly and the orchestra members play bloodcurdling solos along the way. Kate Westbrook, Martine WaltierFind albums by this artist and Billie BottleFind albums by this artist perform the vocal parts, which are, as usual, theatrical and full of drama. A few legendary veterans can be found among the orchestra members, like saxophonist Alan WakemanFind albums by this artist and trumpeter Dave HoldsworthFind albums by this artist, both soloing splendidly.

Overall this is another Mike Westbrook masterpiece, which proudly takes its place with his earlier works in the rich tapestry of his musical achievements. His many followers will hopefully add this jewel to the Mike Westbrook collection, as it wholly deserves to be heard and admired. There are but a few contemporary musical figures, which have behind them six decades of pioneering work and a splendid legacy of uncompromising musical treasures. Wholeheartedly recommended!

This is an archive concert recording by British Jazz Colossus pianist / composer / bandleader Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist and his Orchestra, recorded over three days in July 1992 in Catania, Sicily during the Mike Westbrook Festival organized by local Jazz aficionados. Twenty four musicians take part in the recordings: twenty one members of the Orchestra including Mike and his wife Kate WestbrookFind albums by this artist and three guests - vocalist Phil MintonFind albums by this artist, French violin virtuoso Dominique PifarelyFind albums by this artist and Italian trombonist Danilo TerenziFind albums by this artist. The concerts were not officially recorded at the time, but the lamented studio wizard Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist, to whom this album is dedicated, managed to restore the music from various sources half a Century later to produce this double CD with sixteen tracks, seven of which are extended pieces between ten and almost twenty minutes long.

As Westbrook writes in the liner notes the Orchestra was at the absolute top form at the time, following UK and European tours with the Big Band Rossini project, which culminated in a Royal Albert Hall concert for the BBC Proms, which took place on 30th of August 1992, just a month after the music presented here was performed and recorded, followed by the recording of the splendid "The Orchestra Of The Smith`s AcademyFind albums with this title" album in September of the same year.

The material includes a wide range of compositions, with only one piece from the Rossini project and the rest covering Westbrook´s compositions going as far back as the mid-1970s ("Citadel / Room 315Find albums with this title") and his explorations of William BlakeFind albums by this artist and Berthold BrechtFind albums by this artist / Kurt WeillFind albums by this artist inspirations. The majority of the material is of course original, composed by Westbrook, with just one standard, one Duke Ellington inspired piece, two Brecht / Weill pieces and one Gioachino RossiniFind albums by this artist inspired piece arranged by him. As appropriate for a Westbrook Festival the music represents faithfully Westbrook´s musical path up to the time of the recording.

I am sure I don´t need to convince any of the numerous Mike Westbrook followers that this album is an essential piece of his recorded legacy. Although the sound quality is perhaps not ideal in comparison to his other live recordings, it is certainly acceptable, surely thanks to Hiseman´s efforts. The music is certainly way too good to remain in the vaults. This album is pretty unique as far as the choice of material is concerned, since usually Westbrook´s live recordings document his current projects rather than a review of his work with an almost nostalgic glance back.

With such quality of the music and the superb abilities of the performers involved, this is a beautiful time capsule, which documents not only the achievements of Westbrook but the entire European Jazz history at its best. One should admire Westbrook not only for his music but also for his consistent effort to document his music.

Accompanied by his faithful life and musical partner, wife, singer / lyricist Kate WestbrookFind albums by this artist and a team of superb instrumentalists, Mike created this new album, which is dedicated to the memory of a couple of their friends and supporters Margery and John Styles, who are now both deceased. Obviously a work of love and deep gratitude, this new musical journey takes the listener through different chapters in the Styles´ life´s story, as told by Kate´s lyrics and ornamented by Mike´s music. Musically Mike uses the Blues as the basis for all his compositions on this album, which is somewhat unusual for him, although not entirely unexpected. The production and sound quality are truly amazing, which adds to the overall pleasure and delight of listening to the music. Biscoe and Whyman solo beautifully, both on saxophones and clarinets, often interplaying and exchanging licks fiercely. Berry´s bass is both precise and inspired, gluing the music together and Hiseman´s drumming is outstanding, tasteful and incredibly musical above all. Listening to Hiseman´s contributions here one can really hear the difference between drumming and playing the drums. Mike plays some very nice keyboards parts in addition to his usual piano contributions. Kate´s vocal delivery is strong, clear and exquisite as usual with her theatrical trickery of twisting the vocals any way she pleases still amazing every time. Overall this is one of the best albums I´ve heard in a long time, a complete experience, both aesthetical and intellectual, as all good Art should be able to consist of. This one goes beyond any recommendation, being simply a masterpiece and an essential musical experience!

Westbrook´s association with the poetry of Blake goes back to the early days of his career, with the release of the legendary album "Tyger (A Celebration Of William Blake)Find albums with this title" released in 1971, which also involved Mitchell, and which remains criminally unreleased on CD to this very day. In 1980 Westbrook released another Blake related album called "The Westbrook Blake (Bright As Fire)Find albums with this title" and then in 1999 he released the studio version of "Glad DayFind albums by this artist" as a 2CD album. Ten of the twelve compositions included in the studio version are present on this live album.

The poignant and truly revolutionary poetry of Blake challenged Westbrook to create some of his most magnificent work, combining the British traditions of Folk, Classical and Choral music with his Jazz inspirations. The result is one of the most inspiring Jazz & Poetry projects ever created. It offers a sublime balance between the lyrics and the instrumental parts, which compliment each other perfectly.

The carefully selected group of musicians performing the music is absolutely perfect for the job. Mike Westbrook plays several deeply moving solo piano parts, as do Thompson and Street on their respective instruments. Berry is equally proficient playing arco and rhythmic pulsations. The unusual instrumental setting (accordion & violin) works out magnificently. Minton and Kate Westbrook are as usual beautifully expressive, sensitive and elegant. The choir parts are delicate and modest, as required by this fragile sonic environment. In short this is simply a perfect piece of musical artistry from start to finish.

For British Jazz lovers and Westbrook followers this is an absolute must of course. For music connoisseurs not familiar with his work (shame on you!) this is a perfect introduction to his musical world, accessible to every sensitive person on this planet.

It is absolutely delightful to see the British Jazz legacy being kept alive and the Cadillac label getting a second “life”.

The album presents fifteen mostly relatively short tracks (but three of which last for about ten minutes each), all but one composed by Westbrook.

The show presents a scene based around the great French painter Raoul DufyFind albums by this artist painting a portrait of Jane on the Nice promenade, when (as the description on the album’s booklet says): “a troupe of singers and instrumentalists enter into a spirited exchange with the painter about the nature of Art and his place in its history”.

The music is absolutely exquisite and offers some of Westbrook’s most melodic and lyrical pieces ever, in most cases beautifully sung Kate. In other cases, the music serves as a background to the spoken texts by the vocalists / actors.

As usual with the Westbrooks in action, the entire album is soaked in European aesthetics, which deals with Culture in all its aspects and manifestations, with an emphasis on painting in this case. The philosophical and existential issues touch upon in Kate’s libretto is a reoccurring in many different disguises in her literary work since many years.

The intimate and minimalist instrumental settings of just saxophone / keyboards / bass manage to create a completely coherent soundtrack to the proceedings, with brilliant soloing by Wakeman and solid bass pulsations by Vergette, with Mike brilliantly providing the harmonic / melodic background to the entire extravaganza. As usual, this music is simply bigger than life in every aspect.

Overall, this is another Masterpiece by the Westbrooks and their cohorts, absolutely exploding with brilliant music all over and superbly put together with the spoken word, singing and playing creating a magic carpet ride of multilayered stimuli. Absolutely not to be missed and a crucial piece of the Westbrooks puzzle, which seems to know no borders or limitations. Epic!

This is a solo piano album by British pianist / composer / bandleader Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist. It was captured live in Paris, beautifully recorded by the lamented Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist, and presents twenty relatively short pieces, most of which were composed by Westbrook, but a few standards and a couple of BeatlesFind albums by this artist songs are also included. The pieces are sub-divided into four cycles and an epilogue of sorts.

Westbrook´s solo piano performances are a splendid opportunity to examine the alter ego of the orchestral Westbrook, which is by far more representative and dominant in his career. The dexterity and complexity which characterizes Westbrook orchestral universe is gone completely and the listener is exposed to the innermost "naked" and minimalistic Westbrook, toying with single notes and isolated chords as if he was reading a series of haiku poems.

Even the most experienced Jazz listeners will need to make a serious effort to recognize the familiar melody lines within the notes created by Westbrook´s fingers touching the keyboard. But of course this music is not about playing melodies; it is a form of mysterious interpretation and creation of an atmosphere rather than actual delivery of the music per se. In other words Westbrook playing the piano just by himself delivers the music the way he feels and understands it, not necessarily the way it was originally written, even in the case of his own compositions.

As everything in the sphere of haute culture this music is a combination of elegance and sophistication, which work on the intellectual "muscles", with emotional stimuli that touch the listener´s heart and soul. As such, the effect the music has on a listener is directly proportional to his openness and submission to the Artist´s dominion transmitted through the notes he produces on the instrument.

Overall this is a wonderful package of pure delight, which demands total attention and openness but pays back with interest. Solo piano connoisseurs and the many Westbrook followers will find this album irresistible, and all I can do is to recommend it, not only to the Jazz diehards, but all listeners of unadulterated great music. A must!

This is a solo piano album by British pianist / composer / bandleader Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist. This album was recorded at the same venue in Paris, where Westbrook recorded his previous solo piano album "ParisFind albums with this title" eighteen months earlier, this time without any people in the audience. It presents fourteen pieces, grouped into three chapters and a postscript; some composed by Westbrook or co-composed by him and his wife Kate WestbrookFind albums by this artist, others coming from such diverse sources as The Beatles or familiar Jazz standards. The music was edited and mixed by the lamented Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist and offers a wonderfully detailed sound quality.

Westbrook solo piano recordings, starting with the album "PianoFind albums with this title" recorded over four decades ago and now expanded by "Paris" and this album, are a wonderful opportunity to get acquainted with the most intimate side of Westbrook the pianist. His work with small and especially so with large ensembles are first and foremost a showcase of his compositional achievements and his role as a pianist is often overshadowed by the intensity of these works and perhaps also a tendency to put other instrumentalists (or vocalists) in the limelight. The solo piano recordings are therefore the most exposed instances of Westbrook´s piano playing and as such most revealing.

The choice of material obviously reflects Westbrook´s admiration of Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist and Thelonious MonkFind albums by this artist and of course his love for his wife and musical partner Kate Westbrook. In many respects, at least to me, this album is a reflection of his life and his musical path, seen in retrospect and expressed with extraordinary finesse and emotion. Age does this to you, grabbing you by the throat and forcing you to look back at your life and take an account of it. I can hardly imagine a more beautiful way to do this than what Westbrook manages to do here.

The way Westbrook touches the keyboard is also quite extraordinary. The use of silence and pause makes all the difference and he is an absolute Master of timing, which results in the music being as much a consequence of the notes he plays as of the silent moments separating them. The "slow motion" effect he uses here so brilliantly achieves the same effect as watching a movement in slow motion – it allows a much higher resolution of the separate notes and their mutual relationships, which would not be possible when the notes follow each other in rapid progression.

There is no doubt that Westbrook, despite his advanced age, is till very much a leading force of the British / European Jazz scene and his prolific and blissfully diverse recordings being released at a steady paste are constantly a source of musical Artistry of the highest caliber, for which we are all thankful.
