  | AMALGAM ~ INNOVATION FMR 119 (Barcode: 649849981592) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1974 Released: 2003
3rd album by the superb British Jazz / Improvised Music ensemble AmalgamFind albums by this artist, one of the precursors of British / European Free Jazz scene in the late 1960s and 1970s, founded by saxophonist Trevor WattsFind albums by this artist. On this album the lineup includes the legendary drummer John StevensFind albums by this artist, pianist Keith TippettFind albums by this artist, bassists Kent CarterFind albums by this artist and Lindsay CooperFind albums by this artist and conga player Terri QuayeFind albums by this artist. The music includes four compositions by Stevens and one by Watts, all of which are excellent vehicles for the extended improvisations. This album was originally released on the tiny independent TangentFind albums on this label label, and was unavailable for many years, which is now rectified by this CD issue. In many respects this album is quite different from most of the ensemble´s output, as it includes a piano, which was not usually included in the lineup, mellowing the overall sound. Tippett plays wonderfully of course and his contribution is most valuable. Overall this is yet another example of the wonderful forces at work during a most illustrious period in British Jazz. A classic of the genre and a must for any Free Jazz / Improvised Music buff!

  | GORDON BECK ~ GYROSCOPE ART OF LIFE 1003 (Barcode: 804640100324) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1968 Released: 2002
Pianist / composer Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist, one of the true forefathers of modern British and European Jazz, has been a source of inspiration and musical joy to Jazz connoisseurs since the 1960s. His formidable technique and more importantly overwhelming musicality are completely unique and unrivaled. This, his 4th recording as a leader, deserves a special notice for many reasons. Stylistically it is somewhat atypical to Beck’s usual output, as it marks his exploration of “free form” Jazz, which was enjoying a period of unparalleled prosperity in Britain at the time this album was recorded, with momentous recordings by other British piano giants like Howard RileyFind albums by this artist, Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist, Keith TippettFind albums by this artist and others. However, in Beck’s case the “free form” remains somewhat tamed by his immense love of melody, thus creating one of the most formidable examples of early European “free form”, which even the most conservative Jazz listener can easily savor. This is Beck’s genius, but the credit must also go to his two partners: bassist Jeff ClyneFind albums by this artist and drummer Tony OxleyFind albums by this artist. The trio plays here in complete unity, with telepathic interplay and cohesiveness. Clyne is a monster player, incredibly melodic and with a sublime sense of rhythm and Oxley is a complete genius, the most intelligent and technically proficient drummer to come out of the British Isles. This is a marvelous opportunity to hear Oxley’s work at the time he was still playing “time”, although of course in his very special way of doing so, with the “time” being felt rather that actually played, since he is all over his kit doing stuff that is not recommended to be tried at home. This album was originally released on the tiny MorganFind albums on this label Records (owned by the famous Morgan Recording Studios in London) and disappeared from the shelves soon after, becoming one of the British Jazz most sought after collector’s items. The reissue on Art Of LifeFind albums on this label brings back to life a masterpiece of immense importance, which is an essential piece of the complex musical puzzle created in Britain by the end of the 1960s. I can’t imagine any serious British / European Jazz fan not having this momentous recording in their collection. Beyond essential!

  | COMMAND ALL STARS ~ CURIOSITIES 1972 REEL RECORDINGS 010 (Barcode: 676868178023) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1972 Released: 2008
This album is a great example of what the Canadian Reel RecordingsFind albums on this label label is all about: unearthing recorded documents of the British Jazz / Avant-Garde scene dating back to the 1960s, which have been so far completely lost and (sadly) often forgotten. Considering the fact that the Golden Decade (1965-1975) was Britain´s most illustrious contribution to music, any recorded document from that period has an immense historical value and therefore the work done by this label is truly a quest worth following. The music contained herein was recorded with the intention to be released as a double album, presenting the Art of spontaneous improvisation, performed by a collective of young (at the time) but experienced British players, who spearheaded the local Free Jazz / Improvised Music scene and certainly deserved the "stardom" status in spite of the oxymoron such epithet might imply: pianist Keith TippettFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Elton DeanFind albums by this artist, trombonist Nick EvansFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Mark CharigFind albums by this artist, bassists Harry MillerFind albums by this artist and Johnny DyaniFind albums by this artist and drummer Keith BaileyFind albums by this artist. These musicians often played with each other in various ensembles, of which they were members, but never collectively as one group, hence the one-time opportunity to hear them improvise collectively is so attractive. Unfortunately, as it often happened at the time, even with Jazz labels as the one for which these recordings were made, the label found this music to be "too much to swallow" and the project was discarded, including whipping out the original master tapes (a crime, without a doubt). Fortunately two copies of the original four reels were recently discovered by Evans and here we are being able to finally listen to this music. The music itself needs little elucidation to people familiar with the recorded output of the protagonists – it is what they always did best, play whatever their hearts dictated at the moment, carefully listening to each other and together creating a whole, which is much bigger than its parts. The album also includes two tracks recorded later the same year (for the BBC? as the recording premises might suggest) by a sextet including Dean, Evans and Charig with guitarist Jeff GreenFind albums by this artist, bassist Neville WhiteheadFind albums by this artist and drummer Louis MoholoFind albums by this artist. This is a true "blast from the past" and an absolute must for any British Jazz / Avant-Garde fan, wholeheartedly recommended!

  | ELTON DEAN ~ THE VORTEX TAPES SLAM 203 (Barcode: 5028386020325) ~ UK ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 1990 Released: 1992
This is a live album by British Jazz saxophonist / composer Elton DeanFind albums by this artist, recorded at the legendary London’s Vortex club during the five days of the last week of September 1990, each night with a different lineup, four of which are quartets and one is a sextet. The list of the participating musicians reads like the Who’s Who of the British Free Jazz / Improvised Music scene at the time and includes pianists Keith TippettFind albums by this artist and Howard RileyFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Trevor WattsFind albums by this artist, Jerry UnderwoodFind albums by this artist and Simon PicardFind albums by this artist, trombonists Nick EvansFind albums by this artist and Paul RutherfordFind albums by this artist, bassists Marcio MattosFind albums by this artist and Paul RogersFind albums by this artist, drummers Louis MoholoFind albums by this artist, Mark SandersFind albums by this artist, Nigel MorrisFind albums by this artist and Tony LevinFind albums by this artist. The fact that Dean managed to invite all these great musicians to play with him during one week speak volumes about his position on the scene and the respect he earned over the years. The album presents five tracks, three of which are over ten minutes in duration. All the music was composed by Dean.
The music is absolutely in sync with what one might have expected from such esteemed players, Free Jazz oriented, full of passion and incredible dialogues between these musicians, who often played with each other in various settings. The incredible intensity of the music still allows for excellent individual contributions to be clearly heard. The sextet (four saxophones) track is a wonderful example of group improvisation, where the mutual respect is fully observed and the saxophone quartet is featured as an organic micro-orchestral unit, later joined by the rhythm section.
There is so much superb music on this album, that writing about it is actually pretty redundant, and should simply encourage to grab a copy of this gem, before it completely disappears from the market. British Jazz enthusiasts and even listeners who are aware of Elton Dean only through his association with Soft MachineFind albums by this artist, should make to bold step forward and embrace this facet of Dean’s incredible talent.
Overall, this is a monumental document of the British Free Jazz scene by the end of the 1990s, when it was at its absolute peak. The tornado swirl on the album’s cover reflects the power and spirit of the music perfectly and fans of this kind of music should find this album indispensable. Lucky for us this music was captured on tape and released, staying with us for posterity. A true force of Nature!

  | BOB DOWNES / OPEN MUSIC ~ DIVERSIONS VOCALION 8434 (Barcode: 765387843427) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1970 Released: 2007
Flautist / saxophonist / composer Bob DownesFind albums by this artist was one of the pioneers of the British free-form Jazz. Apart from leading his own groups, most notably the Open MusicFind albums by this artist trio presented here, he also played with Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist, Keith TippettFind albums by this artist, Ray RussellFind albums by this artist’s Rock WorkshopFind albums by this artist and many others. He was also one of the first musicians to start their own record label, which was called OpenianFind albums on this label, on which this album was originally released. The Open Music trio included, apart from Downes, one of the following bass players: Barry GuyFind albums by this artist, Jeff ClyneFind albums by this artist, Harry MillerFind albums by this artist and Barre PhillipsFind albums by this artist (the first two are present on this recording) and drummer Denis SmithFind albums by this artist. Downes composed all the music and played mostly various flutes, although he was equally fluent playing the alto saxophone. The music is excellent and truly visionary for the time of the recording. The level of interplay between the trio members is exceptional and the virtuosity of the players is exemplary and the album lost none of its vigor and charm over the years. A great example of early British Free Jazz at its best, suitable for most Jazz listeners, as although highly improvisational, the natural flow of the music makes it easily acceptable to most people. The music on this album was used several times as a part of dance show, with the trio performing live and accompanying the dancers. Free Jazz listeners should definitely try this gem.

  | PAUL DUNMALL ENSEMBLE ~ IT`S A MATTER OF FACT DISCUS 148 (Barcode: 5051078002125) ~ UK ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 2022 Released: 2023
This is an album by the octet led by British Jazz saxophonist / composer / bandleader Paul DunmallFind albums by this artist, which also includes vocalist Julie TippettsFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Martin ArcherFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Charlotte KeeffeFind albums by this artist, trombonist Richard FooteFind albums by this artist, guitarist Steven SaundersFind albums by this artist, bassist James OwstonFind albums by this artist and drummer Jim BashfordFind albums by this artist. The album presents six original compositions, all by the leader.
The music, although obviously very spontaneous and Free Jazz oriented, is based on solid compositions, which even swing happily, when given a chance. The tracks are pretty long, which means there is plenty of opportunity for spirited improvising by the ensemble members, who play in solo, duo trio and every other imaginable configuration, in addition to their performances as the octet. These are some of the finest British Free Jazz improvisers, which means that there is not a dull moment herein.
Of course, the fact that Julie Tippetts is part of the lineup constitutes the proverbial cherry on top. It’s great to hear her incredible vocal pyrotechnics as part of a large ensemble, a superb reminiscence of her work in such circumstances with Keith TippettFind albums by this artist’s large / gigantic ensembles in the past. Although she sings mostly vocalese and improvised voice parts, there are occasional lyrics, which I assume she was the author of, although noting is mentioned about it on the album’s artwork, which BTW features some beautiful wood engravings by Dunmall and Pete Lawrence.
Overall, this is a wonderful, highly spirited and superbly played / improvised album by this first class team, which is a pleasure to listen to from start to finish. It is also a proof that Free Jazz can be elegant / environment friendly and listenable by a much wider audience than usually assumed. Dunmall keeps the torch burning and Julie Tippetts lost nothing of her charm over time, which is heartwarming, since ay our age the time passing by can be merciless with friends disappearing on a daily basis. Thanks to Martin Archer, the spiritus movens of the DiscusFind albums on this label label, which ceaselessly releases non-trivial music, against all odds, for which we are eternally grateful.

  | KEVIN FIGES ~ YOU ARE HERE JAZZ NOW 02 (Barcode: 5060774190654) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 2023 Released: 2024
This is an album by British Jazz saxophonist Kevin FigesFind albums by this artist, recorded in a sextet setting with pianist Jim BlomfieldFind albums by this artist, trombonist Raphael ClarksonFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Pete JudgeFind albums by this artist, drummer Tony OrrellFind albums by this artist and bassist Riaan VoslooFind albums by this artist. The album presents fourteen tracks, five of which were composed by Keith TippettFind albums by this artist, five were composed by other British Jazz musicians connected to Tippett throughout his career, and the remaining four short pieces were composed by the members of the sextet.
The album (and the sextet) is a tribute to the music of the legendary British pianist / composer / bandleader Keith Tippett, one of the most important figures of the modern British Jazz. Figes and a few other members of the sextet played with Tippet before his untimely demise in 2020, and the leader directed a series of concerts commemorating Tippett’s music, leading to the creation of this album.
The music is a wonderful tribute to Tippett’s giant contribution to the development of British Jazz since the late 1960s, in which he instigated some of the most revolutionary ideas, ranging from solo piano to Big Band / Orchestral projects, which are still perfectly valid today and remain beacons of ingenuity and genius, sadly not present on the contemporary scene.
The music is splendidly performed and recorded and offers a fond memory of Tippett and other heroes of the British Jazz scene, like Elton DeanFind albums by this artist, Harry MillerFind albums by this artist, Hugh HopperFind albums by this artist, Dudu PukwanaFind albums by this artist and King CrimsonFind albums by this artist members, all of which made a tremendous contribution at their time. The material selected for this album is a superb review / retrospect glance at the finest moments of the scene.
This album is the second release on the new Jazz NowFind albums on this label label, created by the same people who run the splendid Jazz In BritainFind albums on this label label, which produced an impressive series of brilliant albums, which document the development of British Jazz in past decades. Obviously the new label is meant to document contemporary British Jazz.
Overall, this is a wonderful tribute album, which offers refreshed versions of compositions by Keith Tippett and other Godfathers of modern British Jazz, splendidly arranged and performed by Figes and the sextet, a great addition to any British Jazz record collection.

  | HUGH HOPPER ~ HOPPER TRINITY BOX CUNEIFORM 240 (Barcode: 045775024028) ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene Recorded: 1976 Released: 2007
2nd album by Hugh HopperFind albums by this artist (and the first release after he left Soft MachineFind albums by this artist), released originally on the tiny Norwegian Compendium label (same label that originally released Henry CowFind albums by this artist’s ConcertsFind albums with this title and other weird but wonderful music). Musically the album belongs very strongly to the Soft Machine experimental Jazz-Rock of the ThirdFind albums by this artist, FourthFind albums with this title, FiveFind albums with this title & SixFind albums by this artist period (when Hopper was still a member of the group). Hopper enlisted eight great musicians (Mark CharigFind albums by this artist, Elton DeanFind albums by this artist, Dave StewartFind albums by this artist, Gary WindoFind albums by this artist and others), all members of the flourishing Canterbury scene and UK Jazz circles (members in groups like Brotherhood Of BreathFind albums by this artist, GilgameshFind albums by this artist, Hatfield And The NorthFind albums by this artist, IsotopeFind albums by this artist, Keith TippettFind albums by this artist Sextet, etc), who make up the duos, trios, quartets and quintets that play on this album. He wrote all the music, except one track, which was composed by Ornette ColemanFind albums by this artist. This album is considered Hopper’s most consistent release ever and sounds as fresh today as when it was first recorded. For all Canterbury scene and SM fans this is an absolute must and it’s a great joy to see this album available again. Brilliant stuff!

  | HAROLD MCNAIR ~ THE FENCE HUX 095 (Barcode: 682970000954) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1970 Released: 2007
Saxophonist / flautist / composer Harold McNairFind albums by this artist has been one of the greatest (and sadly unsung) heroes of the British Jazz scene. A brilliant instrumentalist he was one of the busiest studio musicians and took part in countless recording sessions, including those by famous Rock acts. He was a permanent member of DonovanFind albums by this artist’s group and recorded many albums with him. Of course he was also active on the Jazz scene, both as a leader and sideman. He recorded several albums, of which this is the last released while he was still alive, shortly before his life was tragically cut short by lung cancer at a ridiculously young age. His last eponymous album was released posthumously. This beautiful album was recorded with Harold’s musician friends and admirers, all great stars and Jazz heroes themselves: Keith TippettFind albums by this artist and Alan BranscombeFind albums by this artist on piano, Colin GreenFind albums by this artist on guitar, Rick GrechFind albums by this artist and Danny ThompsonFind albums by this artist on bass and Terry CoxFind albums by this artist and Tony CarrFind albums by this artist on drums. Harold plays saxes and flute – my preferred instrument in his hands. The music has a slight Caribbean feel, and includes one original composition by Harold. It’s difficult for me to shed the nostalgic attachment to this album, as Harold has been one of my favorite musicians for a very time, but I think the albums stands the test of time beautifully and should be enjoyed by most Jazz loving people around the globe. Bliss!

  | HARRY MILLER / ISIPINGO ~ FULL STEAM AHEAD REEL RECORDINGS 012 (Barcode: 676868177927) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1975 - 1977 Released: 2008
Harry MillerFind albums by this artist brought over from his native South Africa a whole universe of music, which he and several of his South African musical cohorts injected into the British Jazz scene at a time of its greatest glory, not only musically but also socially, when it opened its arms and embraced any worthy influence, be it from India, Middle East, Far East or any other part of the crumbling Empire. Harry was always one of the most revered Masters of the bass and the warm tone and full body of his instrument ornamented countless recordings made by British bandleaders in the 1970s. However, Harry´s heart was always warmest to the amalgam of Free Improvised Jazz based on South African roots. His performances with the Brotherhood Of BreathFind albums by this artist and with his own roots ensemble IsipingoFind albums by this artist are clear evidence of the fact. Sadly Isipingo recorded just one album and therefore this new release, which presents a set of wonderful (mostly studio) recordings, all previously unreleased, is a true delight to every one of the many Harry´s fans around the globe. Made in cooperation with the Miller family label OgunFind albums on this label Records, run by his wife Hazel, this album is a heaven on earth in every respect – the music is delightful, the sound quality excellent and the historical value immeasurable. The lineup of the sextet changes slightly on the tracks present here, including saxophonist Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist, trumpeters Mark CharigFind albums by this artist and Mongezi FezaFind albums by this artist, trombonists Nick EvansFind albums by this artist, Malcolm GriffithsFind albums by this artist and Paul NeimanFind albums by this artist, pianists Stan TraceyFind albums by this artist, Keith TippettFind albums by this artist and Frank RobertsFind albums by this artist, Miller on bass and drummer Louis MoholoFind albums by this artist. The music, all composed by Miller, charges full steam ahead indeed, preserving absolutely all of its vitality and high spirited energy. This album deserves a well respected place in any serious British Jazz album collection and hopefully will be discovered by many new listeners, who missed this wonderful music when it was performed live, being one more testimony to the fact that Harry´s untimely death in 1983 was a tremendous loss for all music lovers.

  | HARRY MILLER / ISIPINGO ~ WHICH WAY NOW CUNEIFORM 233 (Barcode: 045775023328) ~ UK ~ Jazz Released: 2006
Originally from South Africa, Harry MillerFind albums by this artist was one of the main forces on the UK jazz scene in the 1970s. He recorded and performed with all the major players during that period (John SurmanFind albums by this artist, CentipedeFind albums by this artist, Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist, Keith TippettFind albums by this artist, Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist, King CrimsonFind albums by this artist, Julie TippettsFind albums by this artist, Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist and Chris McGregorFind albums by this artist´s Brotherhood Of BreathFind albums by this artist) and his contributions were very significant in the development on that wonderfully diverse and prolific period. He and his wife founded the legendary OgunFind albums on this label label, which released many of that period’s essential recordings and documented the scene probably more efficiently than any other UK label at the time. Miller’s sextet IsipingoFind albums by this artist (Nick EvansFind albums by this artist - trombone, Mongezi FezaFind albums by this artist - trumpet, Harry Miller - double bass, Louis MoholoFind albums by this artist - drums, Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist - alto sax and Keith TippettFind albums by this artist - piano) recorded only one studio album and therefore this high-quality recording from 1975 by Radio Bremen is an invaluable addition to both Miller’s discography and the overall documentation of this illustrious period in UK jazz. The music is somewhat similar to the output of Chris McGregor´s Brotherhood of Breath (as is the group’s lineup), which played a special kind of jazz strongly influenced by Africa music, called “kwela”. Isipingo is just a bit more on the jazzy side of things. For the many fans of 1970s UK jazz this is a must of course.

  | MAGGIE NICOLS / MATILDA ROLFSSON / MARK WASTELL ~ SEMIOTIC DRIFT CONFRONT 37 ~ UK ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 2023 Released: 2023
This is an album by Improvising Music trio comprising of British vocalist Maggie NicolsFind albums by this artist and multi-instrumentalist Mark WastellFind albums by this artist and Swedish percussionist Matilda RolfssonFind albums by this artist. The album presents one track of improvised music lasting for about thirty-five minutes. The album was released by ConfrontFind albums on this label Recordings, owned by Wastell, which is dedicated almost exclusively to the Improvised Music scene.
The music evolves around the vocal expressionism by Nicols, one of the few British Improvised Music vocalists, active since the late 1960’s as one of the pioneers of the genre, with Spontaneous Music EnsembleFind albums by this artist, Keith TippettFind albums by this artist’s CentipedeFind albums by this artist and others. Her recorded legacy is sadly rather limited, which is a great pity, as she is definitely one of the most individual voices of the European Improvised Music scene.
The music is as Avant-Garde as one might expect, completely free spirited and unconventional, going back to the first forms of expression available to humans, which were voice and percussive tools. Obviously this is mostly for the highly dedicated audience of Avant-Garde explorations, but the human voice enthusiasts should find this very interesting.
Overall, this is a fascinating opportunity to hear Nicols again, which is always a great adventure, and the Improvised Music buffs should be very happy to have this album in their collection. Wastell’s dedication to promote adventurous and uncompromising music is truly admirable.

  | NOSTALGIA 77 ~ SESSIONS FEATURING KEITH & JULIE TIPPETT TRU THOUGHTS 183 (Barcode: 5060006355127) ~ UK ~ Avant-Garde Jazz Recorded: 2008 Released: 2009
This is a criminally little known album by British Jazz producer Benedic LamdinFind albums by this artist operating under the Nostalgia 77Find albums by this artist moniker, recorded with the legendary couple: vocalist / lyricist / composer Julie TippettsFind albums by this artist and her husband pianist / composer Keith TippettFind albums by this artist. Other musicians participating on this album are bassist Riaan VoslooFind albums by this artist, drummer Adam SorensenFind albums by this artist, guitarist Gary BoyleFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Mark HanslipFind albums by this artist and trumpeter Fulvio SigurtaFind albums by this artist. The album presents fourteen original songs, composed by Julie, Keith and other musicians participating in this session, with lyrics mostly by Julie.
The music is a brilliant amalgam of Blues, soulful Jazz and Avant-Garde, radiantly performed by all the participants. The music moves naturally and smoothly between to genres, which is of course quite surprising and seemingly impossible. Julie offers both “straightforward” vocals and Free Form vocalese, as usual breathtakingly beautiful and Keith idiosyncratic piano playing is the leading instrumental support of the proceedings, but he also offers several wonderful soli. Boyle offers some great guitar parts, as do Hanslip and Sigurta, and the rhythm section supports the music amicably for the entire duration.
Overall, this is a little known gem, which offers a superb document of the diversity, openness and versatility offered by Keith and Julie Tippett. The mostly melodic music is spiced by Avant-Garde touches, which should be acceptable to listeners not usually exposed to that kind of music. This is of course a must to all fans of the Tippett couple (separately and together), and is definitely worth seeking out, as long as it is available.

  | HOWARD RILEY ~ DISCUSSIONS JAZZPRINT 137 (Barcode: 604388682720) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1967 Released: 2007
This debut recording by the legendary UK pianist Howard RileyFind albums by this artist was initially released 40 years ago on a tiny label (OpportunityFind albums on this label, owned by producer Chris WellardFind albums by this artist) and has been unavailable for ages, making it a super-rare collector’s item. Riley has been spearheading the UK free jazz scene since the mid-1960, recording regularly over the years and serving as a beacon of musical enlightenment and vision. His exceptional talents as a pianist and composer are truly unrivaled, with the possible exception of his peer Keith TippettFind albums by this artist.
On this album Riley is accompanied by the brilliant bassist Barry GuyFind albums by this artist (Spontaneous Music EnsembleFind albums by this artist (SME)), another prominent figure on the UK free jazz scene, who recorded with Riley’s trio on more than one occasion. The person behind the drums is probably the greatest surprise to the visitors of this site, as it is no other than Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist - future leader of ColosseumFind albums by this artist, TempestFind albums by this artist and United Jazz + Rock EnsembleFind albums by this artist (Hiseman’s early jazz career is much lesser know).
The trio performs a set consisting of several Riley’s original compositions and a few standards – these well disguised as appropriate for a free jazz setting. Some clearly melodic elements are still present on these tracks, as the adventurous full-blown Avant-Garde was yet to come, but this is a classic of the genre in every sense. The interplay between the three master musicians is phenomenal and considering their tender age (at the time of this recording) this is a monster achievement. Absolutely essential for all free jazz lovers, especially for connoisseurs of the UK branch of the genre.

  | HOWARD RILEY / MARIO CASTRONARI / TONY MARSH ~ WISHING ON THE MOON FMR 014 ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1993 Released: 1995
British pianist / composer Howard RileyFind albums by this artist is primarily known for his numerous improvised solo piano recordings and duets with fellow improvisers, like Keith TippettFind albums by this artist. As one of the greatest pioneers of British / European Improvised Music, he achieved in time a legendary status among his peers and fans alike. In contrast to his solo / duo recording, Riley’s piano trio albums are often reflections of his more lyrical and gentle side, bringing up his Jazz roots. This delightful album is no exception. Supported by two superb musicians, bassist Mario CastronariFind albums by this artist and drummer Tony MarshFind albums by this artist, Riley delivers, what might appear as an almost “conventional” Jazz album. Of course there is nothing conventional about his exceptional improvisational ability or the performances by all three musicians, but the overall effect of the album is more acceptable to a listener, who might find it difficult to face Riley’s “usual” output. Of course some of the pieces on this album are freely improvised and others are melodic, but the album’s immediate “appeal” is magical. This is a great example of masterly performed music, which escapes classification and goes directly to one’s heart. Most warmly recommended, especially to listeners who are not familiar with this great musician and could use this album as an entry point to discover a new world of music.

  | HOWARD RILEY / KEITH TIPPETT ~ INTERCHANGE JAZZPRINT 109 (Barcode: 604388474028) ~ UK ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 1993 Released: 2001
This is a wonderful album by the British Jazz duo of Avant-Garde pianists Howard RileyFind albums by this artist and Keith TippettFind albums by this artist. It presents a live concert recorded in Bern by the Swiss Radio, which is a continuous spontaneous improvisation lasting for almost an hour and not split into separate tracks, but appearing here as the only track of the CD.
This is the third recording in a duo format by these two Master musicians, following the "First EncounterFind albums with this title" (recorded 1981) and "In FocusFind albums with this title" (recorded 1984) and as usual offers some dazzling performances. Completely unrehearsed, the music sounds as if played by one four handed being, with a level of telepathic communication between the two pianists which is mind bugling.
Improvised Music can present quite a challenge to the listener, much more so in recorded form than being experienced live, where the direct contact between the artists and the audience is presents and becomes a part of the entire experience. This album, although being incredibly rich and complex, is one of the most accessible of its kind, and can be enjoyed probably by people who had no previous or very little Avant-Garde encounters.
Personally I find this album to be one of my favorite recordings by both Riley and Tippett, and although I have very many of their recordings, I find myself returning to this one more often than most of the others. But of course everything these two Magicians recorded over the years is absolutely worth being discovered and kept on the shelf for easy access.
Most warmly recommended and although not easily found these days, definitely worth the effort of hunting for a copy – satisfaction guaranteed!

British pianists / composers Howard RileyFind albums by this artist and Keith TippettFind albums by this artist have both been on the forefront of the Avant-Garde musical scene since the 1960s, recording and performing some of the most daring and advanced music originating in Europe. Although each one of them creates quite a different musical universe, they found time and inclination to cooperate as a duo since many years and recorded several albums together. This live performance in Switzerland is considered both by themselves and their fans as a peak of their musical cooperation and constitutes a sublime document of Improvised Music. The sheer power and endless possibilities available by two grand pianos facing each other are simply staggering. The music is all spontaneous and unrehearsed, but it sounds as if these two marvelous musicians played with each other constantly. The ability to listen to each other and complement each other musically is omnipresent here, creating a total that surpasses by far the sum of the ingredients. Listening to the music and moving between delicate and quiet passages to stormy explosions is a journey every music lover should undertake at some stage. The level of interplay and mutual respect these two musicians hold for each other is truly admirable. All that is left for us to do is to float on the wings of this music and let it take us to uncharted territories, having a ride of our life. Superb!

  | SAROST ~ AURORA JAZZ NOW 03 (Barcode: 5060774190906) ~ UK ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 2025 Released: 2025
This is the debut album by the British Jazz Trio SarostFind albums by this artist, comprising of saxophonist Larry StabbinsFind albums by this artist, bassist Paul RodgersFind albums by this artist and drummer Mark SandersFind albums by this artist. The album presents four lengthy tracks, all co-credited to the trio members, with the additional credit to Keith TippettFind albums by this artist on the last track.
Considering the collective legacy of these three veteran musicians, it is not surprising to find them improvising freely for the entire duration of this album, displaying their amazing technique and experience. The music takes no prisoners and listeners not used to highly Avant-Garde improvised interactions, each lasting for about a quartet of an hour, should be fairly warned to proceed with caution.
However, listeners familiar with previous recordings and appearances by these Artists, should enjoy their collective interactions, as they all have plenty of experience and imagination to share with their listeners. There is plenty of impressive soloing herein and collective camaraderie, of the highest intensity. This is the 3rd release on the new Jazz NowFind albums on this label label, run by the good people of Jazz In BritainFind albums on this label, sharing their finds with all of us.
Overall, this is music for a very limited audience of Avant-Garde / Improvised Music niche, as such of the highest quality, but for the rest of the world it is simply beyond comprehension and ability of communicating with it. I feel happy to belong to the first category and thanks for sharing!

This is a phenomenal live recording by the great British pianist / composer Keith TippettFind albums by this artist, one of the very last great Avant-Garde Jazz musicians on this planet. The music consists of one long (about 50 minutes) spontaneous improvisation recorded at a concert in Japan. Obviously every listener finds different meanings to this incredible music, full of emotional charge and artistic elegance. Made in a spur of the moment and yet everlasting, like a sonic painting captured by the recording equipment for posterity. My great admiration and love for this music is commonly known herein, but I hope some other people will find this interesting, not to say overwhelmingly beautiful. Don´t think – listen!

  | KEITH TIPPETT ~ LINÜCKEA FMR 070 (Barcode: 649849982346) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion Recorded: 2000 Released: 2000
It might sound strange at first to see the British pianist / composer Keith TippettFind albums by this artist, who is after all a representative of the Free Jazz and Improvised Music genres, in the context of contemporary Classical music. Nevertheless this project is exactly what this music is all about – a synergy of Improvised Music and contemporary Classical. In 1995 the Kreutzer String QuartetFind albums by this artist, one of the world’s most famous and revered classical ensembles, commissioned Tippett to write a piano quintet, to be performed by him with the quartet. Tippett stood up to the challenge admirably, composing a brilliant piece of contemporary music, which although mostly written, includes sections, which allow for spontaneous improvisation and collective free interplay between the performers. The piece was performed several times over the years and eventually recorded five years later, for all of us to enjoy for posterity. The music is truly stunning, combining hundreds of years of the European music tradition with modernism at its best. Although the music might sound strange at first both to Classical and Jazz listeners, the beauty and the emotional power of this extraordinary piece is able to transcend all barriers. Of course this is not intended for casual listening and requires both attentiveness and open mindedness, but the pleasure inspired on the listener is boundless. I wish as many people as possible would be exposed to this music, alas this treasure will be known quite a limited circle of “insiders”. I dare everybody to try this one.

  | KEITH TIPPETT ~ THE MONK WATCHES THE EAGLE DISCUS 102 (Barcode: 5051078984025) ~ UK ~ Avant-Garde Jazz-Classical Fusion Recorded: 2004 Released: 2020
This is a sensational archive album by British Jazz pianist / composer Keith TippettFind albums by this artist, which presents a live recording of his composition for large choir, solo voice and a two saxophone quartets, with lyrics by Julie TippettsFind albums by this artist. The work was commissioned for the 2004 edition of the Norwich and Norfolk Festival and was premiered that year at the Norwich Cathedral where it was also recorded for broadcast by the BBC. Tippett conducted the performance, which included Julie Tippetts on solo vocals, the BBC SingersFind albums by this artist choir, an improvising saxophone quartet comprising of Paul DunmallFind albums by this artist, Kevin FigesFind albums by this artist, Ben WaghornFind albums by this artist and Chris BiscoeFind albums by this artist, and also the Apollo Saxophone QuartetFind albums by this artist.
The music is every bit as innovative, far-reaching and groundbreaking as the rest of Tippett´s musical legacy and this posthumous release expands even further the scope of his musical vision, which encompassed enormous variety of works between solo piano music to extremely large ensembles like CentipedeFind albums by this artist or smaller ensembles like ArkFind albums by this artist, and stylistically spanning various Avant-Garde sub-genres between Improvised Music, via Free Jazz to contemporary Classical Music, rubbing shoulders with Progressive Jazz and Art Pop.
Most of the body of this work is performed by the choir, which often sounds like an instrument rather than a choir, resembling choral works of 20th Century Classical composers like Henryk GoreckiFind albums by this artist, György LigetiFind albums by this artist and Krzysztof PendereckiFind albums by this artist to mention just the most audacious ones. When accompanied by the saxophone quartets, one supporting the music harmoniously and the other spicing the proceeding with intensive improvisations, the music offers several climaxes, which mark the transitions between the consecutive sections of the entire composition.
It is not surprising to see Julie Tippetts taking a major part in this project, like she did in so many of his endeavors over the years. Her vocal performances are the focal point of this music and her improvised soloing should remind everybody of her incredible abilities from the first moment she arrived on the music scene as a Pop star and throughout her transformation as a highly idiosyncratic Avant-Gardist. The presence of Dunmall and Biscoe, two of the British Jazz most significant veteran saxophonists, adds additional quality to the rich tapestry of sounds and aural stimuli.
Overall this album is an absolutely essential piece of the puzzle, which Tippett managed to create during his lifetime, and perhaps even one of the most inspired of his works. As usual Martin ArcherFind albums by this artist and his DiscusFind albums on this label label manage to bring an essential piece of the British Culture back to life, saving it from the imprisonment in the darkness of the BBC vaults (God bless them for recording the music), with a lot of help from Julie. This album is an absolutely essential piece of music in any serious music collection!

  | KEITH TIPPETT ~ THE NINE DANCES OF PATRICK O`GONOGON DISCUS 056 (Barcode: 5051078947426) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 2014 Released: 2016
This is an album by veteran and truly legendary British pianist / composer Keith TippettFind albums by this artist, recorded with his octet which also includes Italian trumpeter Fulvio SigurtaFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Sam MayneFind albums by this artist and James GardinerFind albums by this artist, trombonists Kieran McLeodFind albums by this artist and Rob HarveyFind albums by this artist, bassist Tom McCredieFind albums by this artist and drummer Peter FaircloughFind albums by this artist. Tippett´s wife, vocalist Julie TippettsFind albums by this artist, guests on one track. Apart from Sigurta, Fairclough and the leader of course, the other members of the octet are young players, graduates of RAM (Royal Academy of Music) who represent the new generation of British Jazz musicians.
Keith Tippett was there at the very epicenter of the British Jazz revolution and emancipation almost form the very beginning. His unique approach to music, unrestrained chutzpah to ignore all restrictions and constant pursue of uncharted territory have characterized his musical creations over the years, moving in scope from solo piano works to music for large orchestras. He is also one of the very few British Jazz artists, who remained active, recorded ferociously and maintained his position in the vanguard of the British Jazz to this very day.
As I am getting older the longing for the Golden Decade (1965-1975) of the British Jazz becomes notably more intense. Although I keep my ears close to the grapevine and follow what is happening on the British scene at all times, it seems to me that the spark of genius, the inventiveness and the joy of creation have all noticeably withered over time. Of course it is also possible that my personal perception of music has changed, or I am becoming senile and overwhelmed by nostalgic silliness, and yet the statistics are overwhelming: in my collection there are thousands of British Jazz albums recorded during (and around) the Golden Decade and only a few hundreds of albums recorded since. It that a coincidence?
This album, however, is a ray of hope, which proves that not everything is lost and great music is still being made today. The overall character of this album, its concept and execution are all deeply rooted in the Golden Age tradition. The music smoothly incorporates composed music and improvised passages, it is melody based, but hides the melodic threads behind veils of multilayered arrangements and improvised parts, it incorporates folkloristic influences and it swings beautifully, but only occasionally; in short exactly the same characteristics that stood behind British Jazz some fifty years ago.
As the album´s title suggests, Tippett re-examines and re-visits typical Irish motifs, some clearly audible other much more subtly concealed within the long suite-like composition. Although broken into separate tracks, the music on this album constitutes a complete, coherent and continuous entity, which can only be treated as a complete musical statement.
There are plenty of great performances here, between the brilliant Tippett´s solo passages to the powerful octet statements. The dynamic range of this music keeps the listener in constant tension, trying to guess what the composer´s next move will bring. But as usual with Tippett, he is full of surprises, which means that there are no dull moments here.
Is Tippett getting mellower in time? Perhaps this is the case, as this album is certainly more "listener friendly", melodic and simply wonderfully beautiful than most of his work so far. This attitude was quite surprising for me, but since it works brilliantly well with the more complex parts of this album, it makes me perfectly happy. Being a free spirit, musically or otherwise, and yet at the same time being able to communicate with a large audience is a rare and precious quality, and Tippett proves he´s got it all.
Overall this is a brilliant, deeply moving piece of music, beautifully executed and standing up to the highest aesthetic echelons of British Jazz, established half a Century ago and still very much valid today. I can´t imagine any serious British Jazz connoisseur missing this album in his collection. Absolutely essential listening!

  | KEITH TIPPETT ~ THE UNLONELY RAINDANCER DISCUS 081 (Barcode: 5051078967929) ~ UK ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 1979 Released: 2019
This is a reissue, or rather a reconstruction of the debut solo piano album by the iconic British pianist / composer Keith TippettFind albums by this artist. The music was recorded live during Keith´s 1979 tour of Holland, but the original master tape which was used to produce the double LP album released in 1980 was lost and Martin ArcherFind albums by this artist, the owner of DiscusFind albums on this label Music, painstakingly reconstructed it from the original cassette recordings of the tour, which contain over ten hours of music – an obvious labor of love and an act of total dedication to the cause. The album presents nine solo piano pieces, six of which are extensive and last between eight and nineteen minutes and three are miniatures lasting between one and three minutes. Since the music was recorded in five different locations on different pianos, the ambience and sound quality vary.
Tippett admits that this album sets a standard and sort of a blueprint for his later piano solo recordings, which constitute a significant part of his extensive recorded legacy. But it is far beyond just being a milestone in his career, being also a symbolic statement of the entire British / European Improvised Music scene, which entered the mature stage of its development. The 1960s were devoted to searching for new means of musical expression and were characterized by wild and often chaotic extremism. In the 1970s the European Improvising Music reached a stage of stabilization and crystallization of the chaotic ideas into a series of patterns, which defined the does and the don´ts of the genre and established the Improvised Music circles that grew in London, Paris, Munich and other European cities, including of course also Eastern Europe. But only by the 1980s the genre, or movement, truly established its aesthetics and Artistic goals, which were refined in the process during the two preceding decades.
With this album Tippett, to some extent obviously subconsciously, but following by his convictions and inner musical motifs, clearly defined the credo of Improvising Music as an amalgam of individuality and complete freedom of expression bounded by the need to communicate with the audience. Where the Avant-Garde music often totally lost its touch with reality and with it the ability to establish a contact with the audience, turning into a nihilistic exercise, Improvised Music tried to be music by people, for people.
As a result, the music on this album, despite its "weird" exterior, is in fact completely coherent and communicative, even to listeners with no previous experience in listening to Improvised Music. Even the lack of clearly defined melodic threads constitutes no barriers, as the music is expressive enough to enable the listener to "find" his own melodic "context" within it. It also inspires a sort of meditative state of mind, which embraces and engulfs the listener gradually, and with the advantage of not having to change the LP are switch sides, it is achieved even more effectively here.
Overall this is an absolute must have to all Improvised Music connoisseurs, a wonderful piece of the history of British / European Jazz, that was almost lost in the tides of time if not for the effort to create this reissue. Go and grab it ASAP!

  | KEITH TIPPETT & MATTHEW BOURNE ~ AEOLIAN DISCUS 120 (Barcode: 5051078989624) ~ UK ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 2019 Released: 2021
This is a wonderful 2CD album, which documents the cooperation between the iconic British Jazz pianist / composer / improviser Keith TippettFind albums by this artist (born 1947) and pianist / composer Matthew BourneFind albums by this artist (born 1977), a representative of the new generation of British Jazz. Although separated by a generation gap, the two improvisers felt wonderfully comfortable playing piano duets, which they did during the last three years (2017 – 2019) of Tippett’s activity, cut short by his untimely death in 2020.
The first CD presents eight studio recordings by the duo recorded in July 2019, as well as a solo piece by Tippett, which he composed. The second CD presents a live recording by the duo, also from 2019, which sadly was also the last live appearance by Tippett, which comprises of just two lengthy pieces combined into a one continuous stream of music. All the duo performances (studio and live) are credited to both players.
Of course piano duets are hardly surprising as far as Tippett is concerned and his epic recordings with Stan TraceyFind albums by this artist in the 1970s and Howard RileyFind albums by this artist in the 1990s are absolutely classic examples of the “Art of the Duo” in the piano duet idiom.
Although completely improvised, this music has a superb feeling of melody, even if only created subconsciously by the listener’s mind, and the gentle and serene interplays are sublime examples of “less is more”, which let the music flow naturally and coherently, both in the case of the studio recordings and perhaps even more so during the concert performance. The mutual respect and telepathic communication these two musicians share is nothing short of astounding.
Our great thanks go to Martin ArcherFind albums by this artist, the owner of DiscusFind albums on this label Records, for bringing this superb music out in the open for all of us to enjoy and savor. It would have been unthinkable to let it stay in the vaults, especially in view of the fact that this is Tippett’s final statement.
Overall, this is a momentous release, not only as far as British Jazz is concerned, but as a brilliant document of Improvised music, which makes perfect sense, can be listened to repeatedly and is extremely aesthetically pleasing, something that happens very rarely within this genre. Essential listening!

This is an album, which documents a live performance captured at the Ruvo Festival in Italy, which features the British Jazz couple: pianist / composer / conductor Keith TippettFind albums by this artist and vocalist Julie TippettsFind albums by this artist, and the drummer Luis MoholoFind albums by this artist, who arrived in UK from South Africa, accompanied by the Italian Jazz Orchestra Canto General, which includes also a vocal sextet. The album presents twelve tracks, seven of which are composed by Keith Tippett, two including lyrics by Julie Tippetts, one is a traditional tune and the remaining four are by other South-African expatriates, who were an integral part of the British Jazz scene: Harry MillerFind albums by this artist, Dudu PukwanaFind albums by this artist and Mongezi FezaFind albums by this artist, sadly no longer with us.
The music is absolutely fascinating in every respect and the magic of the live performance is perfectly captured by this magnificent recording. The Orchestra features some top Italian Jazz players, like saxophonist Roberto OttavianoFind albums by this artist, who get a chance to solo throughout the proceedings, and Julie’s vocals are as captivating as always. The focal point of the album is a performance of Keith’s “Septober EnergyFind albums with this title” suite, which gets here a sublime reading by all the musicians involved.
Although based on melodic themes, the music ventures into extensive improvisations by the instrumentalists, never actually losing any of the coherence, which Keith looks after as a conductor. The music offers some of the most intensive Jazz Orchestra moments ever captured on record, which lovers of that particular idiom should cherish.
The album pays a great tribute both to the contribution by the South African Jazz musicians to the development of the modern British Jazz, as well as the sublime compositions by Keith Tippet, which sound absolutely divine in this orchestral form.
Overall, this is a magnificent album, full of great music and wonderful performances, with extraordinary Orchestral Jazz rarely heard at such intensity. For Keith’s and Julie’s fans this is an absolute must of course, the same goes to all British Jazz lovers, but every true music lover on this planet should enjoy this beautiful album in full. | KEITH & JULIE TIPPETT ~ SOUND ON STONE DISCUS 143 (Barcode: 5051078999821) ~ UK ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 1971 - 2022 Released: 2023
This is an incredible album by British Jazz legendary “Couple in Spirit”: vocalist / lyricist / composer Julie TippettsFind albums by this artist and her husband pianist / composer Keith TippettFind albums by this artist. Thanks to sound recording technology, the couple herein is in fact virtual in a sense, as Julie added her vocals to eight previously unissued live piano recordings by Keith, captured between 1979 and 1996, by means of overdubbing in 2022. Although a “real” duo recording was planned in 2019, the Covid pandemic and the death of Keith in 2020 put an end to the project, or at least so it seemed at the time. Determined to make that planned duo recording a reality, Julie finally selected the eight solo piano pieces and overdubbed them with her vocals, which feature her original lyrics, singing and vocalese. A listener unaware of the above circumstances surrounding this recording, would assume these are actual live duos, which probably is the greatest compliment one can state about this music.
Anybody familiar with the work by this couple will of course find this recording everything one could wish for in every sense, but to be honest this music creates a result beyond any expectation, partly due to the fact that Julie overdubs her vocals more than just once, which of course is impossible during a live recording. In retrospect, it is probably the most effective outcome in their common discography, as bizarre as that may sound. Julie’s brilliant sensitivity to add her layers to the existing piano pieces, creating a perfect amalgam, is an absolute labor of love. The most touching piece on the album is the interpretation of the standard “Windmills Of Your Mind”, which is absolutely heartwrenching.
Considering the fact that there are still very many unreleased Keith Tippett piano solo recordings in the vaults, one might develop a desire to hear more of this superb work, virtual or not, as it is truly uplifting.
Overall, this is a completely unexpected “second life” project, which combines archival recordings with new layers of vocals, which reflect the “Couple in Spirit” bond between Julie and Keith in its full glory. A unique and brilliant idea, which creates a deeply moving result. For the many followers of Keith & Julie this is an absolute must. Kudos to Julie for her mental / emotional strength and creative powers and Martin ArcherFind albums by this artist, the dynamo behind the DiscusFind albums on this label label, for pulling this through. | KEITH & JULIE TIPPETT ~ LIVE AT THE PURCELL ROOM OGUN 034 (Barcode: 5020675572317) ~ UK ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 2008 Released: 2010
This is a live album by British Jazz legendary “Couple in Spirit”: vocalist / lyricist / composer Julie TippettsFind albums by this artist and her husband pianist / composer Keith TippettFind albums by this artist. The album presents just one continuous improvised piece lasting for slightly over forty-six minutes.
The music is a brilliant display of improvised music and the “Art of the Duo” idiom, of the epic proportions. The uninterrupted dialogue develops organically, with the couple exchanging ideas and supporting each other splendidly, and one might say telepathically.
Julie utilizes mostly wordless vocalese, which is insanely beautiful, and sadly used by other Jazz vocalists, at least in that extent. Her voice becomes an instrument, which is obviously the most developed instrument out there, completely limitless and unbounded. In addition to her voice, she also plays some oriental percussion instruments, bells and bowls. Similarly, Keith also uses some percussive devices in addition to his piano.
Of course this kind of music, or musical experience, is completely indescribable using words (“Writing about music is like dancing about architecture”), and my meager attempts here have the sole purpose to encourage potential listener to grab a copy of this Masterpiece and give it a listen.
Overall, this is an absolute gem of Improvised Music / Avant-Garde Jazz, especially since it involves the human voice, which is our God given natural tool of expression. It is an absolute must to listeners, who love to be challenged, and a great document of spontaneous music making, which keeps its power beyond the actual moment of creation, resulting in a timeless, lasting Artistic statement.

This is a reissue of two seminal albums by the iconic British Jazz pianist / composer / bandleader Stan TraceyFind albums by this artist: “Free An` OneFind albums with this title” and “The Seven Ages Of ManFind albums with this title”, coupled together as a 2CD set. The first album is a quartet recording with Tracey, saxophonist Peter KingFind albums by this artist, bassist Dave GreenFind albums by this artist and drummer Bryan SpringFind albums by this artist and presents five original compositions by the leader. The second album was recorded by a sixteen-piece Big Band, which included some of the top British Jazz musicians at the time, such as trumpeter Derek WatkinsFind albums by this artist, trombonists Chris PyneFind albums by this artist and Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Peter King, Tony CoeFind albums by this artist and Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist, vibraphonist Frank RicottiFind albums by this artist, the rhythm section from the quartet and others and presents eight original compositions by the leader, also arranged by him. Both albums were recorded in late 1969 (September 10 and October 8 respectively) and released the following year on the EMI / ColumbiaFind albums on this label label.
The quartet album is a brilliant example of Tracey’s openness towards the “new winds” that were stirring up the British Jazz scene, with strong Avant-Gardist / Free Jazz influences ventilating the scene. In complete contrast to many of his veteran contemporaries, Tracey had no problem whatsoever with these trends and flirted with them openly, as long as he was either enjoying or in control, as many of his recordings, like those with Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist or Keith TippettFind albums by this artist, clearly show. This quartet was not playing Free as such, but fiery improvisations and less strict rhythmic patterns are clearly audible, and the general carefree atmosphere testifies.
The Big Band album is a complete different pair of galoshes, with Tracey showing off his genius as composer / arranger / Big Band leader, which always way one of his undeniable fortes (not that he had any weaknesses as a musician that I am aware of). The compositions are simply brilliant, the arrangements unique and the Big Band, exploding with talent, is riding the wind, soaring like there is no tomorrow. Considering the fact that this album was recorded in one day, it is truly amazing that the Big Band performs all these complex arrangements with awe-inspiring ease and elegance.
Overall, these are two absolute British Jazz treasures, and their absence from the record market was a travesty. We should be grateful to Clark TraceyFind albums by this artist (Stan’s son) for bringing them back to life on the family’s ReSteamedFind albums on this label label, hopefully seeing more of these gems getting the same treatment soon. Absolutely essential!

  | STAN TRACEY / EVAN PARKER ~ CREVULATIONS PSI 05.04 (Barcode: 5030243050420) ~ UK ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 2004 Released: 2005
This is a live album by the duo of British Improvising Music Giants, pianist Stan TraceyFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Evan ParkerFind albums by this artist. The album presents four tracks, all extended improvisations credited by default to both musicians.
The music is surprisingly well behaved and relatively serene, which is rather unusual for the Avant-Garde milieu, and as such sounds less outlandish and startling to a less experienced listener, who might come across it by chance. The music’s progression is coherent and often even somewhat melodic, and for Improvising Music connoisseurs absolutely thrilling, displaying a superb telepathic cooperation between the two musicians, in the spirit of the “Art of the Duo” idiom.
As an avid follower of Tracey’s recordings, I have always admired his incredible diversity, flexibility and out of the box approach to music. It is almost incomprehensible that the same musicians can play a highly melodic, swinging, almost mainstream (but never quite mainstream) music and at the same time take part in the British Avant-Garde scene, alongside musicians like Keith TippettFind albums by this artist, Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist or John SurmanFind albums by this artist, all with the same enthusiasm, dedication and most surprisingly perfect accomplishment. This makes Stan Tracey probably the most unique and universal British Jazz Giant, who was always able to create aesthetics rather than try to copy it. This album is a natural companion to another duo album the duo recorded a year earlier, called “Suspensions And AnticipationsFind albums with this title”.
For people familiar with Evan Parker’s music, this album might be as well quite surprising, as he sounds here beautifully melodic, even romantic at times, completely devoid of his usual rather angry / almost aggressive attitude, not to mention some of his most accomplished saxophone performances ever.
Overall, this is a brilliant Improvised Music album, awe-inspiring by its ingenuity and beauty, and one of the few albums in that genre, that can be listened to repeatedly over time, always discovering new layers of Artistry. Jazz lovers, who might be nervous about Improvised Music, will be well advised to give this amazing album a try.

CD2 presents recordings by John MayerFind albums by this artist from 1972, Keith TippettFind albums by this artist from 1971 and Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist from 1980.
The collective lineup of the musicians performing herein is a magnificent compendium of the who’s who of the British Jazz scene at its most dramatic development period. All the music, except that by Westbrook, originates from the early 1970s, and Westbrook’s activity at that time was also absolutely essential, which means that the editors of this album did not have access to any of his early 1970s material, which would have fitted perfectly.
The lineups include an intimate trio, two septets and three large ensembles, and stylistically it moves between delicate lyrical compositions, via orchestral works, Jazz-World Fusion experiments and Free Jazz / Avant-Garde explorations, all this happening at the same time slot, which portrays the British Jazz scene perfectly. I vividly remember the abundance of talent and feverish activity at the time, which meant that selecting an event to go to was often an impossible choice.
This album also emphasizes the importance and incredible support by the BBC to the development of music (Jazz but also Rock) at the time. None of this music herein would be available to us today if not for those regular broadcasts and the sublime recording quality of those guys in white coats…
Overall, this is a tremendous piece of British Jazz history, absolutely essential to all the fans, and of course a perfect companion to the book, which is also wholeheartedly recommended! British Jazz forever!
