  | NEIL ARDLEY ~ A SYMPHONY OF AMARANTHS DUSK FIRE 107 (Barcode: 5065001032189) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1971 Released: 2012
This is the criminally overdue reissue of the second album by British Jazz composer / arranger / bandleader Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist, which also was the second part of his great trilogy, which started with "The Greek VariationsFind albums with this title" and was followed later by "Kaleidoscope Of RainbowsFind albums with this title". It is one of the great gems of the revolutionary British Jazz, which developed in the Golden Decade (1965-1975) and changed to face of music as we know it.
Influenced by Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist and Gil EvansFind albums by this artist, Ardley was the creator of the innovative Big Band / Orchestral sound, which was one of the magic ingredients of the new British Jazz at the time. Although based on the compositional ideas of Ellington and Evans, Ardley managed to push them way forward into an amalgam with contemporary European Classical music, early atmospheric / ambient music and other elements, creating unique orchestral soundscapes. As the musical director, resident arranger and conductor of the New Jazz OrchestraFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. NJOFind albums by this artist), Ardley had at his disposal the crème de la crème of the British Jazz players, and quite naturally he used them to record his own projects as well.
The list of the protagonists behind this recording is of truly epic proportions and includes such luminaries as trumpeters Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist and Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist, trombonist Derek WadsworthFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist, Don RendellFind albums by this artist, Dick Heckstall-SmithFind albums by this artist and Dave GellyFind albums by this artist (who also wrote the informative liner notes for this reissue), pianists Stan TraceyFind albums by this artist and Karl JenkinsFind albums by this artist, bassist Chris LaurenceFind albums by this artist and Jeff ClyneFind albums by this artist, drummer Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist. The only one of its kind Ivor CutlerFind albums by this artist recites a famous nonsense poem and the divine Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist sings Ardley´s music accompanying three classic poems, his first adventure with vocal music.
Overall the album presents a wondrous splendor of musical ideas, marvelously executed by the musicians involved, creating together one of the most beautiful examples of creativity and intelligence, which were the chief ingredients of the music created by Ardley time and again. As an album, this is one of the very few examples of musical perfection, which set the standards for all the others. It is in every respect as perfect today as it was at the time of its recording.
A curious point about this album is the fact that this was the first ever recording to be funded by a grant from the Art Council, which supported a plentitude of great musical projects in the years to come. The album was produced by the legendary Denis Preston, who was in charge of recording a myriad of brilliant early British Jazz albums and without whom the this great music might have never been captured for posterity. The reissue is brilliantly remastered and sounds absolutely spectacular.
This is an unconditional, absolute essential piece of music!

  | IAN CARR DOUBLE QUINTET ~ SOLAR SESSION JAZZ IN BRITAIN 25 (Barcode: 5060774190227) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1970 Released: 2021
This is an archival album by British trumpeter / composer / bandleader / author Ian CarrFind albums by this artist, which presents a radio broadcast of a live session, recorded in October of 1970. The lineup is a tentet (or double quintet), which consists of Top British Jazz musicians of the time, some of which were members of Carr’s band NucleusFind albums by this artist at the time and other were invited to record the Nucleus third album “Solar PlexusFind albums with this title”: trumpeter Harold BeckettFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Brian SmithFind albums by this artist and Tony RobertsFind albums by this artist, bass clarinetist Karl JenkinsFind albums by this artist, guitarist Chris SpeddingFind albums by this artist, bass guitarist Ron MathewsonFind albums by this artist, bassist Jeff ClyneFind albums by this artist, drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist, percussionist Chris KaranFind albums by this artist and finally synthesizer (VCS3) player Keith WinterFind albums by this artist.
The album presents five tracks and the total playing time is only twenty-six minutes, which makes it rather an EP than a full CD. Perhaps with some patience more Ian Carr’s archival material might have been discovered to make this a more significant release, which of course does not undermine the value of the material included herein. The sound quality of this material is quite flat and a proper remaster might have added some glamour.
This session was recorded shortly before the recording of “Solar Plexus” commenced, and includes abridged versions of most of the material that was eventually included on that album, which in today’s terms would have been called a “sneak preview”. The lineup misses the great Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, who took part in the recording of the “Solar Plexus” album, playing on some tracks, alongside Beckett, who played on the other tracks.
The music, as wonderful as it is, appears somewhat hesitant and slightly “undercooked” in comparison to the future album’s versions, which makes this release slightly less essential than most of the Jazz In BritainFind albums on this label releases so far, but for Carr / Nucleus completists is probably essential.
Overall this album is definitely worth investigating, although does not add anything highly significant to Ian Carr’s recorded legacy as such. As usual kudos to the label for digging this material up.

  | GRAHAM COLLIER ~ DEEP DARK BLUE CENTRE / PORTRAITS / THE ALTERNATE MOSAICS BGO 822 (Barcode: 5017261208224) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1967 - 1972 Released: 2008
Composer / arranger / bandleader / bassist Graham CollierFind albums by this artist is one of the Godfathers of modern British Jazz, and his contribution to the genre as a musician, educator and writer are monumental. Although initially schooled in the US (Collier was the first student from the UK to be awarded a scholarship at the Berklee School of Music in Boston in the 1960s), he was in fact one of the pioneers of the European Jazz, accepting the American Jazz tradition as a basis for further development and exploration based on the European cultural heritage. His innovative approach as a composer and arranger were immensely influential not only on the local British scene, but also throughout the entire Europe, especially his usage of irregular meters and time signatures. Over the years Collier composed and recorded a colossal body of work, which includes some of the greatest music of the 20th Century. This album, which is a companion to the previous BGOFind albums on this label reissue of his early recordings, includes the very first recording by Collier released on DeramFind albums on this label in 1967, his last of the early 1970s recordings released on the tiny SaydiscFind albums by this artist label in 1972, before he established his own records label MosaicFind albums on this label, and a sensational never previously released alternate version of the live material, which produced the original "MosaicsFind albums with this title" album. He composed all the music presented here (except one tune) and plays bass (something he was to abandon in the future) and the lineups of the three ensembles include some of the greatest players on the British scene at the time: Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist (trumpet), Alan WakemanFind albums by this artist, Bob SydorFind albums by this artist, Dave AaronFind albums by this artist (saxophone), Karl JenkinsFind albums by this artist (oboe), Ed SpeightFind albums by this artist, Philip LeeFind albums by this artist (guitar), Geoff CastleFind albums by this artist (piano) and John MarshallFind albums by this artist, John WebbFind albums by this artist (drums). Many of these players were to become future leaders of course, as Collier’s ensembles served as an excellent breeding ground for young players, similar to what happened on the Blues scene with John MayallFind albums by this artist’s ensembles. Collier of often called the Charles MingusFind albums by this artist of European Jazz, and the parallels are obvious. The music is of course absolutely stunning, from start to finish, and brilliantly performed. Absolutely essential!

  | GRAHAM COLLIER ~ DOWN ANOTHER ROAD @ STOCKHOLM JAZZ DAYS `69 MY ONLY DESIRE 005 (Barcode: 5052442022411) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1969 Released: 2023
This is an archival live album by British Jazz bassist / composer / bandleader / educator Graham CollierFind albums by this artist, recorded by the Swedish Radio on August 24, 1969, which presents Collier’s sextet with trumpeter Harry BecketFind albums by this artist, trombonist Nick EvansFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Stan SulzmannFind albums by this artist, pianist / oboist Karl JenkinsFind albums by this artist and drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist. The album presents six original compositions, five by Collier and one by Jenkins, five of which appear on the album “Down Another RoadFind albums with this title”, released a few months earlier. The remaining composition (“Burblings For Bob”) makes here its only appearance on record. The album includes informative liner notes by Collier’s biographer Duncan HeiningFind albums by this artist.
Although this was only the second album by Collier, his stylistic direction was already firmly set and represented the new British Jazz, which developed quite independently form the American Jazz tradition. Collier was one of the pioneers of the new direction, which embraced ensemble approach, Free Improvisation in parallel to clearly defined melodic themes, advanced polyrhythmic drumming and some World Music influences. This live recording is quite different in many aspects from the studio recording, and as such is of course invaluable. And of course hearing Graham’s voice introducing the tunes touches many personal memories.
The sound quality is excellent and the cooperation between Jon GriffithsFind albums by this artist, My Only DesireFind albums on this label label owner, and the Swedish Radio, is a blessing and offers the British Jazz fans already the third album of previously unheard material, which is absolutely fabulous. Hopefully more such releases will follow suit.
A small personal note: one of the tracks present here, called “Aberdeen Angus”, is also present on the Graham Collier’s album “Adam`s MarbleFind albums with this title”, which I released on my JazzisFind albums on this label Records label in 1995, and which is completely different from the version presented here.
Overall, this is a superb historical document of the British Jazz scene and an excellent example of some of the most brilliant music created in Britain by the end of the 1960s, which was a true age of discovery and explosive development. Absolutely essential to all British Jazz enthusiasts and record collectors.

  | KARL JENKINS ~ PENUMBRA II JAZZ IN BRITAIN 41 (Barcode: 5060774190432) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1971 Released: 2022
The great abundance of creativity and recording activity, which blessed the British Jazz scene during the Golden Decade (1965-1975), created, among many other cultural marvels, also the “silent hero” phenomenon, which in case of the great multi-instrumentalist / composer Karl JenkinsFind albums by this artist, is a classic embodiment of that concept. Although firmly present at the epicenter of the music-making turmoil at the time, from Graham CollierFind albums by this artist, via Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist, NucleusFind albums by this artist, and most prominently Soft MachineFind albums by this artist, Jenkins’ name would hardly be the primary association for most people thinking about the music of that period, despite his enormous contributions – the fate of a “silent hero”. I have faithfully followed his continuous activity over the decades, which shifted primarily into the Classical Music idiom, which included grand pieces like “RequiemFind albums with this title” or intimate beauties like the latest “PianoFind albums with this title”, always with great satisfaction and pleasure.
This wonderful archival release brings us a three-part suite, composed by Jenkins and recorded live in 1971 with a dreamy ensemble, which includes the crème de la crème of the British Jazz-Rock musicians at the time: Jenkins on piano with trumpeter Ian CarrFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Brian SmithFind albums by this artist, Ray WarleighFind albums by this artist and Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist, guitarist Chris SpeddingFind albums by this artist, pianist Dave MacRaeFind albums by this artist, bassist Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist, drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist and percussionist Frank RicottiFind albums by this artist, arguably the best ensemble ever put together at that time.
Although relatively short, running just under half an hour, the music is an absolute classic example of what was being created at the time, and as such somewhat similar, at least spiritually and aurally, to many other recordings of the period. The composition is based on a steady riff, which develops slowly and offers splendid opportunity to all the instrumentalists to create hair-raising solo parts. The sound quality is perfect, which makes the music to be audible in great detail.
Overall, this is a superb musical time capsule, brought to us courtesy of the people behind the Jazz In BritainFind albums on this label label, who work tirelessly to unearth the great treasures of the British Jazz, making us, the followers and enthusiasts, ecstatically happy. It is also a much deserved “thank you” note to the contributions bestowed on us by this wonderful musician.

  | NUCLEUS ~ HEMISPHERES HUX 078 (Barcode: 682970000787) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1970 - 1971 Released: 2006
Led by trumpeter / composer Ian CarrFind albums by this artist, NucleusFind albums by this artist were not only the most important UK Jazz-Rock ensemble but in fact one of world’s pioneers of the genre. Carr created Nucleus to take the next step in his already well-established Jazz career. During the 1960s Carr was a co leader of the Don RendellFind albums by this artist / Ian Carr Quintet, one of the best UK modern Jazz ensembles. However by the end of the 1960s Carr felt a need to change his direction and move into the Rock influenced Jazz-Rock Fusion. Following the steps of US pioneers of the genre like Gary BurtonFind albums by this artist and Charles LloydFind albums by this artist and UK ensembles like the Graham Bond OrganizationFind albums by this artist, Carr put together a group of the best players on the UK scene to create Nucleus. The band was an instant success and a revelation, soon to be recognized as the leading force of the newborn genre. The first incarnation of the group included (in addition to Ian Carr who played trumpet and flugelhorn) Karl JenkinsFind albums by this artist on electric piano and oboe, Brian SmithFind albums by this artist on tenor and soprano saxophones, Chris SpeddingFind albums by this artist on guitar, Jeff ClyneFind albums by this artist on bass and John MarshallFind albums by this artist on drums. Between 1970 and 1971 this lineup recorded three fabulous albums: Elastic RockFind albums with this title, We`ll Talk About It LaterFind albums with this title and Solar PlexusFind albums with this title, which belong to the absolute classics of the genre. This album includes two live performances of this incarnation of Nucleus, recorded almost a year apart. The sound quality is truly amazing and the performances are stellar. Most of the material is taken from the a.m. three albums, but previously never released tunes are also included, which makes this album even more important. This is a prime example of European Jazz-Rock at its best, alive and kicking. Absolutely essential listening!

  | NUCLEUS ~ LIVE AT THE BBC REPERTOIRE 1410 (Barcode: 4009910141021) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1970 - 1991 Released: 2021
This is a monumental 13CD archival Box Set by British Jazz-Rock Fusion ensemble NucleusFind albums by this artist, founded and led by trumpeter / composer / author / bandleader Ian CarrFind albums by this artist, one of the key figures on the British Jazz scene for five decades from 1960s on. The Box Set collects 28 radio broadcasts recorded between July 1970 and November 1991, an incredible document of the British Jazz history, the development of the genre in general and Jazz-Rock Fusion in particular. Painstakingly collected, organized, remastered / restored, the music is a priceless tribute to one of the most creative bands active in Britain ever. The Box Set includes an informative booklet with an essay written by Roger FarbeyFind albums by this artist.
The Nucleus lineup included over time the absolute Who’s Who of the British Jazz scene, including many of the first generation of players, who revolutionized British Jazz in the late 1960s. Some of the most prominent figures, who played with the ensemble for many years were saxophonist / keyboardist Karl JenkinsFind albums by this artist, bassist Jeff ClyneFind albums by this artist, drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist (who apart from Carr plays on almost all the tracks in this Box Set), saxophonist Brian SmithFind albums by this artist, guitarist Chris SpeddingFind albums by this artist and many others. Many of the ensemble members contributed also their original compositions to the repertoire performed by the ensemble, especially in the early days, with Carr’s compositions dominating the repertoire in the later period.
Although Nucleus, contrary to Farbey’s statement, did not pioneer British Jazz-Rock Fusion as such, the ensemble was one of the key focal points of the genre for many years, even after the genre run out of steam by the mid-1970s. Carr was a prolific composer and Nucleus was for many years the best environment to develop and present his compositions in the most successful way.
As usual with such releases, based on material from the BBC vaults, it is imperative to emphasize the role of the BBC in the development of music in Britain, when it supplied the stable platform for musicians to perform, with the music being broadcast (sometimes worldwide) and eventually archived for posterity. This unmeasurable contribution to British Culture is truly phenomenal.
Considering the fact that the music in this Box Set was taken not only directly from the BBC archives but also from many secondary private sources, often with problematic sound quality, the sonic effect, especially of the early material, is not up to par with today’s standards, but in view of its historic quality is welcome here, although with a slight unease.
Overall, this Box Set is a remarkable effort to document the history of one of the greatest Jazz-Rock Fusion ensembles of all times, and considering the fact that it is mostly previously unreleased, it is a collector’s treasure chest. It is definitely somewhat expensive, but for avid collectors it is worth its weight in gold.

  | SOFT MACHINE ~ ALIVE & WELL: RECORDED IN PARIS (EXPANDED EDITION) ESOTERIC 2234 (Barcode: 5013929733428) ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene Recorded: 1977 Released: 2010
By 1974 the legendary Soft MachineFind albums by this artist switched record labels from CBSFind albums on this label / ColumbiaFind albums on this label (after releasing five magnificent albums on that label) to EMIFind albums on this label´s progressive HarvestFind albums on this label label, on which they would release the band´s last four albums before their epic story would finally come to an end (for the time being).
But the label switch was in fact only an exterior manifestation of the deep changes that the group was experiencing at the time. In retrospect, the four Harvest albums mark a completely new phase in the band´s musical direction, leaving behind the Free Jazz / Improvised Music extremes in favor of more structured and composed music, with strong melodic elements and almost mainstream Jazz-Rock sound. The most significant factor, which brought about the change, was Elton DeanFind albums by this artist´s replacement by oboe, saxophone and piano player Karl JenkinsFind albums by this artist, who also became the most prolific composer of the band´s new material. The second factor was the decision to include a permanent guitarist into the band´s ranks, which was to change the sound significantly from Jazz to Jazz-Rock.
This, the group´s 1st formal live album, was the third of the Harvest albums, with the Soft Machine lineup comprising of Jenkins, violinist Rick SandersFind albums by this artist, guitarist John EtheridgeFind albums by this artist (who replaced Allan HoldsworthFind albums by this artist), bassist Steve CookFind albums by this artist and drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist. It was recorded live at the Parisian "Theatre Le Palace, Monmartre". The music includes material from the two previous Harvest albums, as well as previously unrecorded tunes. There is plenty of improvisation by the players, but it´s much more settled and well organized.
Overall, in retrospect this is still a very solid album by a great band and an absolute must to all Soft Machine fans. This expanded edition includes a whole second CD of previously unreleased material recorded at the same concert dates.

  | SOFT MACHINE ~ FLOATING WORLD LIVE MOONJUNE 007 (Barcode: 692287900724) ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene Recorded: 1975 Released: 2006
Live recordings by the legendary Canterbury band Soft MachineFind albums by this artist have been popping out in recent years on a regular basis, but all of these concentrate on the early days around the period between (and before) the first album and up to about 1973. Therefore this live album is especially interesting, as it dates from 1975, when the band went through a radical change with a new lineup, adding the extraordinary powers of guitarist Allan HoldsworthFind albums by this artist. The band, which also included Karl JenkinsFind albums by this artist on oboe, sax and keyboards, Mike RatledgeFind albums by this artist on keyboards, Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist on bass and John MarshallFind albums by this artist on drums, abandoned the material recorded on previous albums and concentrated on entirely new material, written mostly by Jenkins and Ratledge, which was about to be released on the "BundlesFind albums with this title" album. The source of the recording is the endless archive of Radio Bremen, which of course ensures superb sonic quality. Soft Machine enthusiasts need no encouragement to grab this album with sweaty hands, expecting the best, and sure enough it delivers in full. The performances are stellar, the music enchanting and although less revolutionary and Avant-Garde then the earlier period, nevertheless it is still some of the best stuff played in the 1970s, with distinct Fusion overtones and masterly touches by the musicians. The album includes extensive liner notes, where the band members reminiscence about the period and circumstances of the recording – a great read and together with the music what a piece of music history!

  | SOFT MACHINE ~ LAND OF COCKAYNE ESOTERIC 2208 (Barcode: 5013929730847) ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene Recorded: 1980 Released: 2010
This is the 4th Soft MachineFind albums by this artist album released on the HarvestFind albums on this label label and the last ever record released by the band, bringing an end on a magnificent career, which spanned two and a half decades and resulted in some of the most important music ever recorded. But the truth behind the album is quite different from what appears on the album´s cover – the fact is that Soft Machine did not exist for some time when this album was released and this is a solo project of the last leader of the band, composer / keyboardist Karl JenkinsFind albums by this artist. The decision to release the album under the band´s name is somewhat dubious. Nevertheless the connection to Soft Machine is pretty obvious, as this album features several of its ex-members and co-members: guitarist Allan HoldsworthFind albums by this artist, drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Ray WarleighFind albums by this artist. Jenkins added several other outstanding musicians to Soft Machine core: bassist Jack BruceFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Dick MorrisseyFind albums by this artist, guitarist Alan ParkerFind albums by this artist and pianist John TaylorFind albums by this artist. The music floats somewhere between Jazz and ambient music, with strong ties to contemporary Classical, emphasized by the string arrangements, and some World Music influences. It is a preview of the future work of Jenkins, who in the years to come established himself as one of British most distinguished contemporary composers. So is this a Soft Machine album? Who cares, the important fact remains that this is still great music, which holds water 30 years after it was recorded. Obviously hard-core Soft Machine fans might find it not to their taste, but it is here to stay as part of the band´s legacy. Deal with it.

It was recorded shortly following the recording sessions of "SoftsFind albums with this title", the band´s 9th album, and presents more or less the same musical patterns, with less space for improvisation or extended solo passages. This music was intended as "library music", a term used for music recorded by many British artists, which was intended to be used later by TV and cinema productions. Many of the most important British composers and musicians used this mechanism as an alternative source of income and in retrospect some truly incredible music was recorded for the vaults of many music libraries. Later on some of these recordings were released as albums, exactly like in the case of this album. In retrospect this album is every bit as strong as the rest of the late Soft Machine recordings. Although usually dismissed by music critics as feeble and even worthless, the truth is that it is quite interesting as much for the compositional aspects as for the excellent performances captured here. Let the critics say what they wish, but any true Soft Machine fan will find this music worthy of their attention and perhaps be quite surprised in case this is the first time he hears this little gem. Definitely worth investigating!

7th album, which was the last recording Soft MachineFind albums by this artist did for CBSFind albums on this label. Following the release of SixFind albums with this title veteran SM member Hugh HopperFind albums by this artist announced his departure from the group. Hopper was not happy with the direction the group was taking, namely the less adventurous and jazz oriented Jazz-Rock, which dominated Six. Being a bold innovator and restless explorer, Hopper’s idea of well-organized and structurally sound music was unacceptable, and he decided to leave. For the third time in a row the band enlisted to their ranks a replacement from the band NucleusFind albums by this artist, this time the bass player Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist (who already participated on FourthFind albums with this title and FifthFind albums with this title). He switched from his acoustic bass to a six-string bass guitar and his integration into the band was completely smooth and natural, as he was already familiar with John MarshallFind albums by this artist and Karl JenkinsFind albums by this artist. The music, written mostly by Jenkins and Mike RatledgeFind albums by this artist, is more Jazz-Rock than ever, with rather shorter, but extremely well structured and perfectly executed pieces. The keyboards duets and quirky rhythm patterns are the familiar Jazz-Rock devices used, similar to other groups which played similar music at the time. Contrary to the general opinion, which states that this album is not as strong as the previous SM releases, I personally completely disagree and consider this to be as essential as all the other CBS recordings with some of the best and most memorable SM tunes on it. After this album SM switched to the Harvest label, recording several Jazz-Rock albums featuring guitar players Allan HoldsworthFind albums by this artist and later John EtheridgeFind albums by this artist, all of which are still waiting for proper remaster. 6th album by Soft MachineFind albums by this artist released originally as a double LP. Soon after recording FifthFind albums with this title, SM was facing more personnel changes with Elton DeanFind albums by this artist leaving the band to pursue his free jazz vocation. His replacement was another ex-NucleusFind albums by this artist founding member Karl JenkinsFind albums by this artist. Jenkins was a classically trained musician with exceptional gift for composing beautiful melodies. In addition he was also a multi-instrumentalist and therefore was able not only to replace Dean on saxes, but he also played beautiful oboe and both acoustic and electric piano. The addition of Jenkins was a decisive factor for SM, adding to the band for the first time a touch of professionalism and virtuosity, this in addition to the great spontaneity and vitality the group always possessed. Jenkins turned out to be the group’s most prolific writer and more than half of the music on the new album was his contribution. The new lineup started touring immediately after Hugh HopperFind albums by this artist completed the recording sessions for his first album (1984Find albums with this title) and some of the shows were recorded with the intention of serving as part of the new album (first LP of the set). In late 1972 the group recorded the studio material for the album (second LP of the set), returning to the format of longer and more complex tunes. The music on this album is quite different from what SM played on ThirdFind albums with this title, FourthFind albums with this title and Fifth: it is much more melodic and atmospheric and of course not as much free jazz oriented. In fact this is one of the most essential examples of Jazz-Rock Fusion ever recorded, a direction SM was to follow from now on. This beautiful new remaster improves the original sound tremendously. Absolutely essential!

  | SOFT MACHINE ~ SOFTS ESOTERIC 2202 (Barcode: 5013929730243) ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene Recorded: 1976 Released: 2010
By 1974 the legendary Soft Machine switched record labels from CBSFind albums on this label / ColumbiaFind albums on this label (after releasing five magnificent albums on that label) to EMIFind albums on this label´s progressive HarvestFind albums on this label label, on which they would release the band´s last four albums before their epic story would finally come to an end. This was the second of the Harvest albums, with the Soft Machine lineup comprising of Jenkins, saxophonist Alan WakemanFind albums by this artist, guitarist John EtheridgeFind albums by this artist (who replaced Allan HoldsworthFind albums by this artist), bassist Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist and drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist. The last founding member of Soft Machine, keyboardist Mike RatledgeFind albums by this artist left in the midst of recording of this album and his contribution here are minor. The music is a continuation of the direction set by its predecessor, based upon shorter and beautifully composed melody lines. There is still plenty of improvisation by the players, but it´s much more settled and well organized. In retrospect this is still a very solid album by a great band and an absolute must to all Soft Machine fans.

  | SOFT MACHINE ~ THE DUTCH LESSON CUNEIFORM 490/491 (Barcode: 045775049021) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1973 Released: 2023
This is an archival live album by the iconic British Prog / Fusion group Soft MachineFind albums by this artist, recorded in Rotterdam on October 26, 1973. At the time this recording was made Soft Machine consisted of saxophonist / oboist / pianist Karl JenkinsFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Mike RatledgeFind albums by this artist, bassist Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist and drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist. The 2CD album presents fifteen tracks, all composed or co-composed by the group members.
The group released the album “SevenFind albums with this title” before this concert was recorded, but none of the material from that album, except for one track, does not appear on this live album. One of the tracks that would appear on their next album “BundlesFind albums with this title” is also present, and the rest of the material originates mostly from “SixFind albums with this title”.
The music is mostly Jazz-Rock Fusion oriented, with lengthy tracks (in three cases over ten minutes in duration), with a double keyboards and dense rhythm section dominating the proceedings. Some hypnotic / Psychedelic moments are also present and there are definitely no dull moments for the entire duration. The sound quality is admittedly quite good for a live amateurish recording originating in the seventies. Although the album itself offers very little previously unheard aspects of the Soft Machine phenomenon, every second of their music, especially in such sound quality, is always welcome. Every time when one thinks the sources have been exhausted, some new recording pops out, which adds to the enormous live recording legacy by Soft Machine, mostly released by the CuneiformFind albums on this label label.
Overall, this is an excellent addition to the recorded legacy by one of the most important groups in British Prog / Fusion history, which despite the fact that it was recorded fifty years before being now released, is still completely valid and offers imaginative, ambitious music. An absolute must, of course, to the many Soft Machine completists, and quality music connoisseurs the world over. Considering the fact that Soft Machine still exists and I will hear them perform very soon, obviously adds to the joy of listening to this album.
