This is the criminally overdue reissue of the second album by British Jazz composer / arranger / bandleader Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist, which also was the second part of his great trilogy, which started with "The Greek VariationsFind albums with this title" and was followed later by "Kaleidoscope Of RainbowsFind albums with this title". It is one of the great gems of the revolutionary British Jazz, which developed in the Golden Decade (1965-1975) and changed to face of music as we know it.

Influenced by Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist and Gil EvansFind albums by this artist, Ardley was the creator of the innovative Big Band / Orchestral sound, which was one of the magic ingredients of the new British Jazz at the time. Although based on the compositional ideas of Ellington and Evans, Ardley managed to push them way forward into an amalgam with contemporary European Classical music, early atmospheric / ambient music and other elements, creating unique orchestral soundscapes. As the musical director, resident arranger and conductor of the New Jazz OrchestraFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. NJOFind albums by this artist), Ardley had at his disposal the crème de la crème of the British Jazz players, and quite naturally he used them to record his own projects as well.

Overall the album presents a wondrous splendor of musical ideas, marvelously executed by the musicians involved, creating together one of the most beautiful examples of creativity and intelligence, which were the chief ingredients of the music created by Ardley time and again. As an album, this is one of the very few examples of musical perfection, which set the standards for all the others. It is in every respect as perfect today as it was at the time of its recording.

A curious point about this album is the fact that this was the first ever recording to be funded by a grant from the Art Council, which supported a plentitude of great musical projects in the years to come. The album was produced by the legendary Denis Preston, who was in charge of recording a myriad of brilliant early British Jazz albums and without whom the this great music might have never been captured for posterity. The reissue is brilliantly remastered and sounds absolutely spectacular.

The short and tragic life of pianist / composer Mike TaylorFind albums by this artist, an eccentric genius fallen victim to mental illness / drug abuse, which proved self-destructive and led to his death at the age of 29, is surely worthy a script adaptation for a Martin ScorseseFind albums by this artist movie. Sometimes referred to as “the Syd BarrettFind albums by this artist of British Jazz”, Taylor had close ties with a relatively small group of musicians, like Graham BondFind albums by this artist and the members of his Graham Bond OrganizationFind albums by this artist, which included Jack BruceFind albums by this artist and Ginger BakerFind albums by this artist – soon to be founders of CreamFind albums by this artist. Many people will be surprised to learn that three songs co-written by Ginger and Mike appear on Cream’s Wheels Of FireFind albums with this title album (“Pressed Rat And Warthog”, “Those Were The Days” and “Passing The Time”). Another one of his superb songs – “Jumping Off The Sun” – was recorded by ColosseumFind albums by this artist and appears on several of their albums.

Although known intimately by very few people at the time, the legend lives on and periodically the flame of interest is rekindled among the modern British Jazz fans, like in the case of reissue of his only two existing recordings: PendulumFind albums with this title and TrioFind albums with this title. Even fewer people are aware of the spectacular tribute album recorded by Taylor’s musician friends three years after his death. Recorded under the musical direction of another British Jazz legendary figure, composer / arranger / bandleader Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist, who discovered Taylor’s genius immediately and scored some of his compositions for the New Jazz OrchestraFind albums by this artist when Taylor was still alive. Unfortunately the concert, which was to feature NJO and Mike’s trio never materialized, since Taylor (already very ill at the time) simply missed the gig. Nevertheless Ardley continued to use Taylor’s music as part of the regular NJO repertoire and suggested to Denis PrestonFind albums by this artist, owner of the legendary Lansdowne Studios in London, where most of the pivotal modern British Jazz was recorded, to produce a tribute album to Mike Taylor’s musical genius. Preston, who recorded the two Taylor albums, needed no persuasion and funded the complex and costly project with no hesitation, considering it a most appropriate gesture.

Ardley assembled a group of 20 musicians to record this project, sharing the scoring of the music for a large ensemble with others, who were close to Taylor and new him well, like Howard RileyFind albums by this artist, Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist and Dave GellyFind albums by this artist. One of the tracks is based on a previously unreleased Taylor quartet recording, with the ensemble overdubbed on top of the original recording, which makes Taylor’s participation in this project almost “in person” as well as “in spirit”. Considering the fact that this album combines the genius of Taylor’s Jazz composition with the genius of Ardley’s Jazz scoring / arranging, we get (in mathematical terms) a genius squared result – a rare event indeed. Recommending this album would be somewhat similar to recommending someone to read some Joyce or see a van Gogh – completely superfluous. I’m sure you get the drift by now!

For listeners familiar with the NJO recordings the music presented here will not be unanticipated, as it follows the pattern presented on their studio recordings, which is based on intricate and lavish orchestral arrangements and excellent solos by the orchestra members. The live sound and the raw power of the twenty piece orchestra are of course irresistible and illustrate the supremacy of orchestral music over small ensembles as far as the scale of possibilities is concerned. The orchestra performs two compositions by the lamented pianist / composer Mike TaylorFind albums by this artist, who was already deceased when this music was recorded. Another pleasant surprise is the inclusion of a composition by the legendary Jack BruceFind albums by this artist, who played in the earlier lineup of the orchestra. The presentation of the tunes by the no less legendary Humphrey LytteltonFind albums by this artist is the proverbial cherry on the top.

The suite-like piece marks the beginning for Ardley´s interest in electronic music, which started when he met Keith Winter a year before this music was recorded. His future recording will feature synthesizers of course but this early, both technologically and conceptually, meeting between electronic and acoustic sounds is truly fascinating and innovative, especially since it also features a string section.

Overall this album is an invaluable historical document of the time and of the British Jazz history, and well deserved thanks go to Peter MuirFind albums by this artist, the man behind the Dusk FireFind albums on this label / Market SquareFind albums on this label labels and to Dave Gelly for the informative liner notes and his first hand experiences. The music is a beautiful synthesis of Jazz and contemporary Classical Music that is surely Julian’s most ambitious and far-reaching work as a composer. The tranquil and contemplative themes are splendidly orchestrated and the octet performs in perfect harmony with the string ensemble. Deeply moving and uplifting, this music combines formal musical structures and improvisation in a most elegant way. Serious Jazz connoisseurs as well as those who love Classical Music are both for a treat. This is worthy addition to any serious Jazz album collection and wholeheartedly recommended.

This Box Set is a document of the two concerts organized in order to celebrate the 50th Birthday of British vocalist / bassist / composer Jack BruceFind albums by this artist, one of the greatest figures of Rock / Blues-Rock / Prog-Rock and Jazz-Rock. These concerts took place on November 2nd and 3rd of 1993 and were recorded and videoed for posterity. The Box Sets includes two DVDs which present the music played during the two nights (totaling in almost four hours of unadulterated Jack Bruce genius) and in addition it also includes a third DVD with an extensive collection of interviews with Bruce and his guests recorded at the time and a CD with another hour of music, which is not included on the two concert DVDs. In short about six hours of Jack Bruce, his music and his unique personality, which made his one of the most respected and admired musicians of the 20th Century.

The music includes a selection of mostly Bruce originals, spanning from the glorious CreamFind albums by this artist days and through all the solo albums Bruce recorded after Cream disbanded. His brilliant compositions prove again that they are completely resistant to the passing of time, and present a fabulous legacy that will stay with us forever.

My personal favorite part of the concert is the last hour on the second DVD, which presents just the trio of Baker, Bruce and Moore, playing a series of Cream favorites, which is simply breathtaking and presents an "alternative" Cream vision, which is in every respect as exciting as the original group with Eric ClaptonFind albums by this artist. The absence of Clapton is in fact a great disappointment and might have been a momentous occasion, but it was corrected twelve years later during the Cream reunion concerts in 2005.

Overall this is a package no lover of Classic Rock will consider to miss, especially in view of the fact that some of the people captured here are no longer with us (Heckstall-Smith, Moore and of course Bruce himself). Since nobody makes music like this any more, this stuff is even more important today for the sake of the new generation, in case it´s not completely lost yet.

His innovative approach as a composer and arranger were immensely influential not only on the local British scene, but also throughout the entire Europe, especially his usage of irregular meters and time signatures. Over the years Collier composed and recorded a colossal body of work, which includes some of the greatest music of the 20th Century. Flautist / composer Bob DownesFind albums by this artist is one of the most creative and innovative figures on the British Jazz scene, with a wide scope of cross-genre contributions from contemporary Classical Music via Jazz and Jazz-Rock to Free Jazz and Improvised Music. Downes was an integral part of the late 1960s / early 1970s revolution, that emerged in British and European Jazz, emancipating it from years of American influence and domination, and participated in numerous seminal recordings made during that period. His many activities were usually executed under the loosely defined umbrella name of Open MusicFind albums by this artist, which varied from a trio to a large ensemble and as the name suggests was completely free from any stylistic or genre restrictions. After recording several albums for mainstream record labels in his early days, Downes created his own record label, called OpenianFind albums on this label Records, on which he releases his projects, being one of the first musicians to do so. By the early 1980s Downes moved to Germany, where he lives and continues his work today. This incredible album presents Downes as a composer of "serious" contemporary music, with the entire first side of the original vinyl album dedicated to a suite intended for a ballet performance, called "Dream Journey". In fact this album was intended to be entitled "Dream Journey", but the title never appeared on the album´s artwork and therefore it is referred to as "Open Music" (which was of course the ensemble´s name). The rest of the music consists of shorter pieces, the final of which is entitled "Electric City" – a name of another album Downes was working on at the same time. This is a reissue / remaster 2CD album by British vocalist / organist / songwriter Georgie FameFind albums by this artist, my favorite British vocalist of all time. It includes Fame’s three UK albums released originally on the PyeFind albums on this label label, all recorded between 1978 and 1980. This album offers an excellent sound quality thanks to the careful remastering.

Fame, who managed to develop a stellar career very early in his life, made a consistent transformation from a Pop and Rhythm And Blues artists into a full-fledged Jazz artist later on in his career and recorded an astonishing legacy of superb albums over the years. These tracks clearly show the direction and the strong Jazz influence which was a part of his music from the very start, and are a wonderful trip down the memory lane. Fame was always a sublime songweaver and his original material sounds today every bit as strong as it did almost sixty years ago. He was also a very gifted organist and his organ solos were a part of his irresistible charm.

On the first two albums, which present mostly original songs by Fame, he is supported by a fabulous team of British Jazz musicians, which include bassist Brian OdgersFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Ray WarleighFind albums by this artist, trombonist Malcolm GriffithsFind albums by this artist and others. Overall, this is a superb collection of early and sadly almost completely forgotten Georgie Fame recordings, which sounds as good as it did almost half a Century ago. Fame’s unique vocals, Jazzy phrasing and incredible melodic sensibilities managed to create an enchanting sound, which to this day remains unbeaten by any of his successors.

During the period between these two sessions Garrick was living a “double life”, dividing his time between the Don Rendell / Ian Carr QuintetFind albums by this artist and his own ensembles, producing some of the most significant new British Jazz, of which he was one of the most important architects, especially so as a composer. His astonishing diversity, which includes “straightforward” (well never really straightforward) Jazz, Free Jazz, Jazz-Choral music, and the Jazz & Poetry explorations, like those portrayed by the second session included here, made him a key figure of the new British Jazz, crystalizing at the time.

The music, although captured over five decades ago, is still a full blow in the face to those unfamiliar with Garrick’s multi-layered musical universe. I have been incredibly fortunate to hear Garrick perform live during that period and the long conversations we had together, after the music was over, about music (and poetry) with the baby-faced, always smiling Garrick are forever implanted in my mind.

Overall a rare and pioneering work, ages ahead of its time and one reflecting the scope of Garrick’s talent and musical contribution. A must!

The album presents seven tracks, four from the first session and three from the second. Those include all five compositions included on the “Tanglewood 63” album. In addition, it also presents “Country RoadsFind albums with this title”, written by Gary Burton and Steve Swallow, which appeared first on the Burton’s 1968 album by the same name, which included a couple of compositions by Gibbs and one co-composed piece by Gibbs and Burton, and which would have to wait for a couple of years to appear on the 1972 Gibbs “Just AheadFind albums with this title” album. The last track is “June The 15, 1967”, which appeared initially on the Burton’s 1967 “Lofty Fake AnagramsFind albums with this title” album, which also included two compositions by Gibbs, including this one, and which would have to wait for forty-two years to appear on the 2012 Gibbs “Back In The DaysFind albums with this title” album.

The music is, as everything Gibbs ever recorded, absolutely heavenly, both as far as the compositions and the performances are concerned. The formidable team of musicians, under his direction, is able to achieve peaks never earlier encountered in British Jazz orchestral music, and these archival recordings are absolutely fascinating, especially when compared to the final version of most of the music included here, recorded on the “Tanglewood 63” album.

So far, this is definitely my favorite release on the new Jazz In BritainFind albums on this label label, which does a splendid job digging out treasures from dusty vaults, especially so because this album also offers the best sound quality of all their releases so far. So as usual, hats off for the team behind the label and waiting for more of your gems. A bit more attention to details won’t hurt…

This is a reissue / remaster of an album by British Jazz composer / arranger / bandleader Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist, originally released in 1975 on the BronzeFind albums on this label label. It is one of the earliest “reissues”, before the concept became widespread, undertaken simply to correct the blunder of releasing the album on a strictly Rock label, which made it to disappear almost instantly from circulation. The idea of reissuing it on the tiny, but legendary Ah UmFind albums on this label label meant to bring the overlooked gem to the Jazz audiences, where it really belonged. The move was only partially successful, since Ah Um had a very limited marketing abilities and soon disappeared from the market, taking one of the most important British Orchestral / Big Band Jazz albums into the abyss again. The album was reissued again a few years later by the proper archival BGOFind albums on this label label, where it is hopefully still available.

Gibbs recorded the album with an incredible Orchestra / Big Band, which comprised of a fourteen-piece brass section, which included the crème-de-la-crème of the British Jazz scene at the time, including Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist, Ray WarleighFind albums by this artist, Stan SultzmannFind albums by this artist, Tony CoeFind albums by this artist and Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist, to mention just the most prominent Masters, a string section, the Belgian guitarist Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist and a bunch of Americans, which included saxophonist Charlie MarianoFind albums by this artist, bassist Steve SwallowFind albums by this artist and drummer Bob MosesFind albums by this artist – a true “dream come true” setting. The music presents a seven-part suite like continuum, with five parts composed by Gibbs, one co-composed by him with Moses and Swallow and finally one composed by Catherine.

The music, which was light-years ahead of its time, presents a dreamy multi-layered musical journey, full of exquisite melodies, complex harmonies, World Music influences, in short a plethora of musical worlds meshed together, with brilliant orchestral performances and breathtaking soli, mostly by Catharine, Coe and Mariano.

I have cherished this album since the day I had it on the day of its release, and tried to herald its qualities repeatedly over time, sadly due to its obscurity few people shared my enthusiasm over the years. As much as I admire everything Gibbs created over the years, and he certainly managed to produce a substantial body of work over the years, this album was always my favorite piece of his work.

Overall, this is one of the most important and significant Orchestral / Big Band recordings of British Jazz, which lost absolutely nothing of its grandeur, class and depth over time, and which manages to elate my state of being every time I listen to it. Thank you so much my Friend, for your lasting contribution to my sanity ;)

The Gibbs / Burton association goes back to their common Berklee School of Music days. Burton included many compositions by Gibbs on his albums in the 1960s, but for a variety of reasons they did not manage to record together until the "In The Public InterestFind albums with this title" album released in 1974. In fact almost all of the compositions by Gibbs appearing in this set were already previously recorded by Burton. Therefore this historic recording is another wonderful example of their lasting cooperation, and since it remained unreleased for five decades, it is even more significant.

Of course Burton always was a "strange bird" on the American Jazz scene and his aesthetic affiliations were much closer to the European Jazz, which was rapidly developing by the mid-1960s. The pioneering Jazz-Rock Fusion recordings by his quartet, especially those with guitarist Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist, paved the way for the Fusion explosion by the end of the 1960. It is therefore not surprising, that Burton was able to appreciate the quality of Gibbs´ compositions in spite of their complex harmonic and rhythmic structures.

The Lancaster University recording is by no mean less interesting and presents the very early stage of Gibbs´ illustrious career as a band leader, parallel to his composing duties. The glorious days of British Jazz when the concept of a functional Big Band was still feasible were sadly rather short lived and therefore any document of the era is simply invaluable. The presence of Jack Bruce on bass, shedding his superstar post-CreamFind albums by this artist image just for the love of Jazz, that he always considered as very close to his heart, was far from sensationalism. In the short period of time, when Bruce was closely involved with the core British Jazz scene, including the recording of his superb "Things We LikeFind albums with this title" album, are truly worth remembering.

Overall this set is a splendid piece of the British Jazz at its creative peak, and as such is an essential part of every serious British Jazz collection. The sound, which is far from ideal, has been restored to the best ability of today´s sound technology and the set includes well researched and comprehensive booklet describing the background and circumstances of these recordings, which is very informative.

This set is the fifth release by the resurrected TurtleFind albums on this label Records, a Cherry RedFind albums on this label label dedicated to reissues and archive releases of historic British Jazz recordings, which unearth lost and forgotten musical treasures British Jazz connoisseurs simply can´t live without!

This is the second (and last) album by the Great Wee Band quartet co-led by British Jazz trumpeter / composer Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist and guitarist / composer Jim MullenFind albums by this artist, which also included the legendary bassist Dave GreenFind albums by this artist and drummer Stu ButterfieldFind albums by this artist. Saxophonist Stan SultzmannFind albums by this artist guests on three tracks. The quartet was founded in 1999, some ten years before their debut studio album was recorded, and released a demo live album in 2002. The album presents eleven tracks, nine of which are standards and one each is an original by Lowther and Mullen.

The music is all mainstream Jazz oriented, with no surprises as to the stylistic direction, obviously played for fun and camaraderie by musicians who know each other for years. This enables the listener to concentrate on hearing the intricacies of the performances by the individual musicians, which are truly delightful. Lowther on trumpet and flugelhorn delivers many outstanding solos, as does Mullen on his guitar, and the rhythm section plays amicably and always exactly on time, as appropriate for the veterans of their statue.

Overall, this is a great opportunity to hear these musicians in an intimate, relaxed and friendly environment, often presenting a lesser known facet of their careers. This is classic mainstream Jazz with a British aftertaste, which is always a charming experience.

The album presents eight tracks, seven of which are standards and one is an arrangement of a Classical piece.

The music is all mainstream Jazz oriented, with no surprises as to the stylistic direction, obviously played for fun and camaraderie by musicians who know each other for years. This enables the listener to concentrate on hearing the intricacies of the performances by the individual musicians, which are truly delightful. Lowther on trumpet and flugelhorn delivers many outstanding solos, as does Mullen on his guitar, and the rhythm section plays amicably and always exactly on time, as appropriate for the veterans of their statue.

Overall, this is a great opportunity to hear these musicians in an intimate, relaxed and friendly environment, often presenting a lesser known facet of their careers. This is classic mainstream Jazz with a British aftertaste, which is always a charming experience.

The music is everything one might expect to hear at the time by British Jazz musicians, who were defining the modern British sound, still very much entangled into the Bebop tradition on one side, and searching to find their own voice on the other. There is enough originality and innovation herein to make it a fascinating historic document of the era.

Of course the three quartet tracks with Bruce are especially interesting, both because his rare appearance in the strict Jazz idiom and his very open, almost free composition included here, which is a preamble to his wonderful “Things We LikeFind albums with this title” album recorded a couple of years later. The quintet tracks are slightly less challenging, but the title track, which lasts for twelve minutes, is a masterpiece in every respect.

The personal performances are stellar, including Hiseman, who takes a long solo both with the quartet and the quintet. Although the quintet offers a “bigger” sound, the piano is somewhat under-recorded and lost in the mix, which is a pity. But the overall sound quality however is excellent and the music sounds bright and clear.

Overall this is the most interesting CD release by the new Jazz In Britain label so far, hopefully pointing in the right direction. For British Jazz fans, who wish to learn more about the birth of the unique character of late 1960s sound, which revolutionized the idiom, this album is the “missing link” and an absolute must have.

The guitar work is stunning, the brass arrangement just right on the money, in short heaven on earth for any Blues fan, but basically early Jazz-Rock Fusion enthusiasts will find here everything they need to make them happy. Definitely a classic of the genre and an essential piece of music if ever there was one!

The music is a marvelous example of modern British Jazz, based on excellent original compositions and performed by the crème de la crème of British Jazz musicians active in the 1990s. The trombone quartet was quite a unique ensemble of course and they offered very unique arrangements featuring the trombone at the focus, proving the possibilities of the instrument in the hands of great musicians.

Overall, this is an excellent British Jazz album, performed by first class musicians, which is absolutely worth digging for to discover the splendid music and superb performances by the entire team.

This album was never officially released and exists only as a CD-R promo, which is extremely difficult to find, but offers excellent sound quality. The music is a wonderful example of a relaxed, but highly satisfying mainstream Jazz, beautifully performed by the quartet members. It is also a splendid opportunity to hear extended trumpet soloing by Lowther, who rarely gets so much exposure on the albums he plays on as a sideman. The same goes for Mulllen’s guitar, here in its Jazziest incarnation, as opposed to the more Fusiony or even Rocky side of his playing, which appears on most of his recordings. Green is, as usual, in superb form and his elegant bass lines are simply delightful and Butterfield keeps the swing of things right in place.

Overall, this is a delightful document of British Jazz, played in a pub with no fuss or pretense, offering a glimpse of elegance and relaxed joy of playing, which the musicians and the public seem to enjoy as one. For Lowther’s many admirers, this is a great showcase of his playing, which of course is worth listening to, and a worthy item in his discography. Beg or steal, but find a copy ;)

This is a sensational archival album by one of the silent heroes of the British Jazz scene, trumpeter / violinist / composer Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist and his quartet QuarternityFind albums by this artist, with guitarist Phil LeeFind albums by this artist, bassist Dave GreenFind albums by this artist and drummer Trevor TomkinsFind albums by this artist, which was expanded often to a quintet with saxophonists Art ThemenFind albums by this artist or Alan WakemanFind albums by this artist. This double album collects twelve compositions by Lowther or Lee, one of which appears twice, in a quartet and quintet versions. The music was recorded live between 1974 and 1978, but the sound quality is absolutely impeccable considering the archival nature of these recordings.

Lowther’s name appears proudly on well over a hundred albums recorded over the years, including some of the British Jazz most iconic releases, but his recording legacy includes just one (yes ONE) album as a leader, “Child SongFind albums with this title”, recorded in 1970, followed by two albums recorded decades later with his ensemble Still WatersFind albums by this artist (“I.D.Find albums with this title” from 1996 and “Can`t Believe, Won`t BelieveFind albums with this title” from 2018). Therefore, this release fills a gigantic gap in Lowther’s recorded legacy as a leader, and pays tribute to this great musician, along with his fellow musicians of course, all of which are British Jazz icons. With the painful recent passing of Trevor Tomkins, this is even more significant.

The music is a classic example of the Modern British Jazz played in the 1970s, emphasizing excellent compositions and brilliant improvisations, which include a pinch of Free Jazz here and there, but mostly sits well within the modern mainstream of the era. Considering the lineup, it is hardly surprising that the music is nothing short of spectacular, in every respect. Lowther, Lee and the saxophonists solo with passion and vigor and the sublime rhythm section keeps things in check, with Green’s incredibly melodic bass lines and Tomkins’ virtuosity present every step of the way. British scene followers should find it interesting to compare Lee’s guitar performances here with his more Prog oriented recordings with GilgameshFind albums by this artist or National HealthFind albums by this artist, which prove his incredible versatility. Lowther’s violin performances here, relatively rarely heard elsewhere, are a proverbial cherry on top of everything.

Overall, this is another admirable contribution to the British Jazz recorded legacy made by the dedicated people behind the Jazz In BritainFind albums on this label label who never cease to enrich our lives with these mementos from the glorious past legacy of the British Jazz. Just the thought that these musical treasures would have remained buried forever fills me with great sadness for all the music that suffers that fate, and of course at the same time with great joy that some of it sees the light of day, for which we are, as always, eternally grateful!

Following the recent release of the archival album by the legendary British trumpeter / composer / bandleader Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist, called “Never Never LandFind albums with this title”, I decided to explore his bewilderingly limited discography as a leader, which apart from his debut album “Child SongFind albums with this title” from 1970, includes only three other albums with his name on them. Henry was graciously kind to send me a copy pf this here album, I managed to buy a copy of “I.D.Find albums with this title” from the drummer Paul ClarvisFind albums by this artist, who owns the Village LifeFind albums on this label label, and the last one, called “Fungii MamaFind albums with this title”, recorded by a quartet co-led by Lowther and guitarist Jim MullenFind albums by this artist, seems sadly unobtainable (anybody with a spare copy?).

Can`t Believe, Won`t BelieveFind albums with this title” was recorded by a quintet, which comprises of Lowther, saxophonist Pete HurtFind albums by this artist, pianist Barry GreenFind albums by this artist, legendary bassist Dave GreenFind albums by this artist and Clarvis. The album presents eight tracks, six of which are original compositions by Lowther, one is by Hurt and one is a standard.

The music is absolutely brilliant, from start to finish, sublimely melodic, radiantly executed by the quintet and astonishingly characteristic of the “British Jazz” sound, that dominated the early days of the idiom. Although perhaps somewhat nostalgic and sentimental, it is rather simply mature, encapsulating decades of experience, as well as the ability to play without a need to prove anything, a status Lowther rightfully earned a long time ago.

I must say that it has taken me completely by surprise and as someone who is supposed to know a thing or two about British Jazz, the fact that I discovered this absolute gem only now, is truly shameful. The only way to repent is to spread the word and recommend everybody to grab a copy of this hidden treasure, while they last.

Overall, this is an absolute marvel of an album, which for a lack of a better word I’d call “sweet”, which simply distillates the emotions I enjoyed while listening to the music. A British Jazz classic by every standard, this album is an absolute must in every serious British Jazz collection - beyond essential!

The music is as marvelous as one might expect from Lowther and his cohorts, relaxed and beautifully melodic, splendidly performed by the quintet members. Lowther’s lyrical compositions cry “British Jazz” with every note and the quiet ambience, influenced by the fact that the music was recorded in a Church, is typical of the early period of the genre, which Lowther lovely carries over along the pathway of his career.

Arguelles proves to be an ideal “partner in crime” to the gentle explorations of the melodic ventures, showing remarkable restrain and harmonious cooperation with Lowther, especially potent during their unisono passages. The sublimely delicate piano parts and amicable rhythm section approach turn the music into a tranquil, slow paced ride, which is delightful from start to finish.

As astounding as it might sound, this is one of the remarkable few recording by Lowther as a leader, and it makes me exceedingly happy to be able to listen to this music now, so many years after it was released, and bring it to the attention of the many faithful followers of Lowther’s career and Genius.

Overall, this is an absolute must have album in any serious British Jazz collection. It seems the album is out of print by now, but perhaps the label might be persuaded to press some more copies of this jewel. In any case try to hunt down a copy and you won’t regret it!

This Box Set collects the four UK albums recorded by the first version of the British Pop group Manfred MannFind albums by this artist, released originally on the HMVFind albums on this label label, and the first solo album by their vocalist Paul JonesFind albums by this artist, and includes material recorded between 1963 and 1966, a period spanning just over three years. The original members of the group were: keyboardist / vibraphonist Manfred Mann, drummer Mike HuggFind albums by this artist, guitarist / saxophonist / flautist Mike VickersFind albums by this artist (all of them coming from a Jazz background), bassist Dave RichmondFind albums by this artist, soon to be replaced by Tom McGuinnessFind albums by this artist and vocalist / harmonica player Paul Jones. Listening to these four albums (the Jones´ album is of secondary importance) clearly illustrates not only their many qualities but also their rapid progress from early American influenced Rhythm And Blues and Rock And Roll to their own individual style, which embraced sophisticated chord changes, complex rhythms, a tendency towards Jazz improvisation and a love of instrumental compositions, combined with exquisite sense of melody.

In order to fully appreciate the group´s incredible journey it is recommended to get a copy of the incredible Manfred Mann anthology "Down The Road Apiece: Their EMI Recordings 1963-1966Find albums with this title", which includes absolutely everything they recorded during those early years. Of course also the second part of their output, released on the FontanaFind albums on this label label, which finds the band fronted by their second vocalist Mike d`AboFind albums by this artist, is equally fascinating and worth investigating.

As I have been saying for decades, it is painfully obvious, especially now in retrospect that Manfred Mann were one of several British groups infinitely better musically than The BeatlesFind albums by this artist; a statement I have been bitterly criticized for, but which I am ready to repeat any time. This music simply proves my point to anybody who is willing to listen with an open mind. Wholeheartedly recommended!

The Box Sets produced under these monikers have no discographical information whatsoever about the lineups, musician names, composers, lyricists, dates and places of recording, original release data and even basic copyright data (the last is strictly illegal BTW). Although the original LP sleeves are reproduced, they are often edited and information (which would be in most cases too small to be readable) is removed. Most importantly these Box Sets don't include any booklet offering a historical background and perspective about the Artists and the Music, which are extremely important and vital to the preservation of our Culture and passing the knowledge to the next generations.

In short the fact that these Box Sets are meant to be inexpensive, does not mean that they have to be cheap. Considering the fact how many times this music has been sold over and over again by the labels, this is a crying shame!

This volume, recorded between 1964 and 1966 includes the recordings by the quintet lineup of Manfred Mann (the group not to be confused with the leader), which consisted of Mann on keyboards, Mike VickersFind albums by this artist on guitar, saxophone and flute, Tom McGuinnessFind albums by this artist on bass, Mike HuggFind albums by this artist on drums and vibraphone and finally the lead singer Paul JonesFind albums by this artist, who also played harmonica. The album presents forty one tracks, which include songs, original announcements and interviews, altogether a superb historical glance at British Pop / Rock at its best. When Paul Jones decided to leave Manfred Mann to pursue a solo career, he was replaced by Mike d`AboFind albums by this artist, who is the hero of the next volume of this series.

In contrast to most British Pop / Rock groups at the time, Manfred Mann had a very strong Jazz / Blues background and outstanding instrumental competence, which was clearly heard in everything they played. To a trained ear it was pretty obvious that the group would rather play a more Jazz oriented material, which the constraints of the Pop idiom did not allow them to do at the time, but they did record many instrumental pieces (included here) which were bona fide Jazz material. With the explosion of the Progressive Rock a few years later, it was no surprise that Manfred Mann would follow that way full-heartedly.

The music included here is a fabulous proof that they don´t make music like this any more. The melodies, the playing and the superb BBC sound are all exactly right on the money and the joy of listening to this music goes way beyond a nostalgic glimpse at the past.

Overall this is an absolute must for all Manfred Mann fans and connoisseurs of British Pop / Rock of the mid-1960s period and a stunning historical document of the period, which should not be missed! The entire first side of the LP was dedicated to an extended blues suite (first of its kind ever), with strong jazz influences, hence this album is often quoted as one of the earliest examples of the Jazz-Rock genre. The quality of the songwriting and the performances on this album are truly astounding and to this day it remains as a classic icon of the era. However soon after the album was recorded Mayall decided to disband the Bluesbreakers and opt for an intimate quartet for his new project, retaining only the services of Mick Taylor. In the early 1950s he arrived in London to study at the Royal Academy of Music and later on was absorbed by the local scene, being one of the true pioneers in merging the Eastern and Western musical traditions, practically inventing the Jazz-World Fusion genre. In the late 1960s / early 1970s Mayer co-led an ensemble with saxophonist Joe HarriottFind albums by this artist, which recorded a series of revolutionary albums called Indo-Jazz FusionsFind albums with this title, which to this day are the absolutely best examples of the genre. Unfortunately with Harriott’s death in 1973 the ensemble disbanded. This album is an absolute sensation, as it presents a suite commissioned and recorded in 1976, but previously never released. A group of musicians, including some of the best Jazz players at the time (Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist – trumpet, Tony CoeFind albums by this artist – sax and clarinet and others) and players of Eastern instruments like tabla, sitar, koto, etc., directed by Mayer recorded this marvelous music, which goes beyond incorporating Jazz and Indian music, but also includes Korean and Japanese motifs. The music is absolutely breathtaking and the thought of it being hidden for almost 30 years is truly outrageous. Fortunately we can all enjoy it now, and as usual better late than never seems to be appropriate. I can’t recommend this album enough, as it is a true masterpiece and should touch the heart of every music lover on this planet. Essential!

Under Ardley’s visionary leadership the band developed the foundations for the modern European Jazz big band sound. Although incorporating the classic American big band tradition of Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist and the more modern approach of Gil EvansFind albums by this artist, Ardley managed to steer his band into uncharted territory, using his unique approach to instrumentation and bold arrangements.

At the time this album was recorded live at London’s Camden Jazz Festival in May of 1970, Ardley was already moving rapidly towards the exploding Jazz-Rock Fusion genre, creating one of the first, and magnificent at that, examples of Jazz-Rock Fusion big band. Compared to American bands at the time, like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist or ChicagoFind albums by this artist, Ardley’s approach is definitely much more refined and orchestral and uses a wider arsenal of the Jazz vocabulary, being therefore much more sophisticated. Having at his disposal some of the best British Jazz musicians (and then also Jazz-Rock Fusion musicians) he was able to turn the NJO into a “mean” and powerful Jazz-Rock Fusion ensemble, which truly fuses Jazz and Rock to the max.

Seven of the tracks present on that album are also included here, which turns this recording into an updated live version of that timeless classic. The original recording tape of this concert had quite a few technical problems, but was painstakingly and beautifully restored to life with an exceptional sound quality considering the circumstances under which it was recorded. One should be truly grateful to the producer of this immensely important historical material for making it available to us, the fans of NJO, Colosseum and British Jazz in general. This is indispensable legacy of the period and a must to any follower of British Jazz music.

It is also a superb display of the individual talents of these magnificent musicians, those who are still with us and sadly those who departed, like Thompson and Hiseman, who met as members of the NJO and created one of the British Jazz “power couples” or Ardley and Carr, whose giant talents are deeply missed.

Overall, this is an absolute must have album for every British Jazz collector, especially in view of the fact that some of the music captured herein is not available anywhere else. The first project is the Tony Hymans – Daryl Runswick Big Band, captured live in 1974, performing four original compositions, one by Hymans and three by Runswick. The music is typical of the era, and similar to other Big Band projects from that time, like those by Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist or Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist.

The second project is an unreleased studio album “Señor Funk”, conceived by Denis PrestonFind albums by this artist and recorded at the legendary Lansdowne Studios in 1978. It presents six tracks, three composed by Runswick, one each by Tony Coe and John TaylorFind albums by this artist and one standard, all arranged by Runswick. Hymans was not a part of this project. As the album’s title suggests, it was supposed to be somewhat Latin Music oriented, which it indeed is, but it also remains very much British Jazz at its core.

The level of composition and performance is everything one might expect from these sublime musicians, and the album is a great exposure to the previously unreleased music from this Golden era of British Jazz.

Overall, this is a wonderful discovery and joy to be able to hear this great music, and for the British Jazz fans a great opportunity to hear again many of the heroes of that period. A must in every serious British Jazz collection!

The album presents thirteen relatively short pieces, all (except one arrangement of a standard) original compositions by Sultzmann, composed over a period of many years, collected here as part of the celebrations of his 50th Birthday.

Although strongly present on the British Jazz scene since many years and with dozens (actually well over a hundred as far as my collection reveals) of albums recorded as a leader and sideman, Sultzmann stays mostly in the shadows and is rarely in the limelight, despite his mammoth achievements and legacy.

This album is a sublime example of the European approach to Big Band Jazz, where the entire ensemble plays like one metaphysical being rather than a collection of individuals, and where the sound of the ensemble is more important than the soloing, although when solos are played, they are all stunning. The compositions are all beautifully melodic and complex enough to keep the listener fascinated at all times. The album is a fitting tribute to Sultzmann’s activity up to that point, which of course continues to this very day.

Overall, this is a superb Big Band Jazz album in every respect, which offers wonderful music and brilliant performances by everybody involved. The British Jazz feel is omnipresent here, which adds to the charm. Obviously this album deserves to be a part of every serious British Jazz collection, and I am ashamed to admit that I missed it for over two decades, now however, it is happily united with the rest of my collection.

This album, released by the Jazz In BritainFind albums on this label label, is a completely non-commercial release, with all profits from the album going to the Cure Parkinson’s Trust, a moving gesture by all the people involved, including Barbara’s and Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist’s daughter Ana GraceyFind albums by this artist and Jazz In Britain founder John ThurlowFind albums by this artist. We all still mourn Barbara’s and Jon’s untimely departures of course.

The first two tracks present the Group EFind albums by this artist, which comprised of (in addition to Barbara) vocalist Pepi LemerFind albums by this artist, pianist Peter LemerFind albums by this artist, bassist Johnny DyaniFind albums by this artist and drummer Laurie AllanFind albums by this artist. The music is Avant-Garde Jazz, with superb vocal parts by Lemer, who sadly is often forgotten, but was one of the most interesting Jazz vocalist of the period.

The next three tracks present a suite for a Big Band, called “The Awakening”, co-composed by Barbara and Jon. The band features a dreamy lineup of eleven instrumentalists and a vocalist – no other than my beloved Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist – which reads like a Who’s Who of the modern British Jazz and is conducted by Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist. The players are: trumpeters Ian HamerFind albums by this artist, Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist and Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist, trombonist Derek WadsworthFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Don RendellFind albums by this artist and Barbara Thompson, cellist Charles TunnellFind albums by this artist, pianist Howard RileyFind albums by this artist, vibraphonist Bill Le SageFind albums by this artist, bassist Jeff ClyneFind albums by this artist and drummer Jon Hiseman. The vocal parts by Winstone are, not surprisingly, my favorite jewels, but the entire suite is simply divine and the fact it was discovered and now released is no less than sensational.

The last five tracks are by Barbara’s group JubiabaFind albums by this artist, which comprised of (in addition to Barbara) trumpeters George ChisholmFind albums by this artist and Ian CarrFind albums by this artist, Wadsworth, Le Sage, Peter Lemer, bassist Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist, drummer Martin DrewFind albums by this artist and percussionist Trevor TomkinsFind albums by this artist. It presents the early version of the band, which was essentially dedicated to combining Jazz with World Music influences, mostly Latin. As far as I am aware, this is the earliest recordings by Jubiaba captured on tape.

Overall, this is an absolute jewel from start to finish and an absolute must to all British Jazz enthusiasts, and in retrospect one of the most surprising and important releases by the Jazz In Britain label so far. The Big Band piece alone is a beacon symbolizing the birth of the modern British Jazz, with everything it stands for: ingenuity, originality, groundbreaking musical thinking and enormous talent. Although Tomkins was almost omnipresent on the British Jazz scene since the early 1960, and appears on dozens of seminal albums recorded over the decades, he never released an album as a leader and only one little know album as co-leader – an amazing fact, which is difficult to believe but true nevertheless. Following his death just a few months ago, the wonderful Jazz In BritainFind albums on this label label rushed to release this, his first album as a leader, to commemorate his invaluable input into making British Jazz what it is.

The music is, as expected, absolutely brilliant, all within the modern British Jazz mainstream, featuring mostly original compositions by the sextet members, which are highly melodic and beautifully structured.

The members of the sextet, especially Hastings and Lee, had close ties with British Jazz-Rock Fusion and Progressive Rock / Canterbury Scene in the 1970s, being members of CaravanFind albums by this artist / Hatfield And The NorthFind albums by this artist / National HealthFind albums by this artist / Soft MachineFind albums by this artist / GilgameshFind albums by this artist (which also included Tomkins), but the music on this album has no relation to these excursions, being much closer to the work Tomkins experienced with the Don Rendell / Ian Carr QuintetFind albums by this artist or Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist ensembles in the 1960s and early 1970s.

Both the teamwork and the individual performances by the sextet members are absolutely phenomenal, showing great comradeship and mutual respect between the musicians. Horler plays some brilliant piano lines and is the quintessential catalyst, always there with his harmonic support behind the soloists. Lee plays amazing guitar soli and proves again that he deserves way more respect for his unique style and consistency. Hastings / Smith offer the Jazzy core with their solid presentations of the themes and inspired soloing. Pyne is a trombone virtuoso and his solos are all absolute gems. Bridge, a superb bassist, who sadly passed away prematurely in 2001, keeps the music swinging steadily, working hand in hand with the leader, who is more reliable than a Swiss clock and never ceases to amaze with his inventiveness.

Overall, this is another great addition to the string of releases produced by the Jazz In Britain aficionados, which makes our lives not only more interesting, but also bearable, all things considered. This music is so good it would have been a crime to leave it forgotten, so now when it is available, don’t hesitate even for a split second… This is an absolutely essential piece of British Jazz legacy!

The music scene is surely one of the greatest sources of unexpected surprises. The case of keyboardist / composer / arranger / bandleader Colin TownsFind albums by this artist is really an excellent example of strange metamorphoses that occur in the world of music. Take a man, who was the keyboards player and composer for the Ian Gillan BandFind albums by this artist, one of Britain’s most notorious rockers of the early 1970s, transport him 20 years forward and you get one of Britain’s most famous TV and Film composers. As if this wasn’t enough, the same person also has ambitions to become a Jazz composer and actually assembles a big band, which he calls the Mask OrchestraFind albums by this artist, writes a collection of Jazz compositions, arranges and records them and eventually releases an album on his own label, called ProvocateurFind albums on this label Records, which boldly states as it slogan: “Improvise not Compromise”. Now that’s something that truly deserves to be called a chutzpah! The amazing part of all this is that it not only works, but actually works wonders. Towns’ debut recording with his ensemble is a majestic piece of music, refreshing and illuminating, continuing the Ellingtonian tradition of big band Jazz composition and at the same time invigorating that tradition, taking it up to contemporary standards. Although this music was recorded almost 20 years ago, it lost absolutely nothing of its power and beauty, as well as element of surprise. It is almost impossible to believe that is a debut recording, but apparently miracles do happen, even in music. If you can lay your hands on this album, grab it, which won’t be easy as it is currently out of print, hopefully not for long. Gorgeous and essential stuff, deserving all the praise it received at the time of its release and certainly a superb document of the British Jazz scene, which apparently still has a few tricks hidden up in its sleeve.

In retrospect I’d say that Towns’ work provides the perfect bridge (or the missing link) between the golden age of British Jazz in the late 1960s / 1970s and today. This is reflected by many aspects of his music, such as his complete disregard of normative mainstream Jazz forms, his constant effort to innovate and cover new ground and even by the fact that his ensembles include some of the legendary players of the golden age as well as representatives of the second and third generation of British Jazz musicians. This stunning album presents Towns and his work at their full glory. It is an extended piece, similar to the symphonic suite form established in Classical Music, which can be considered as a Symphonic Jazz suite. Towns expands his Mask Orchestra into a 70-piece orchestra, which he calls Mask SymphonicFind albums by this artist, using the Jazz big band and an adding an entire symphonic orchestra. In complete contrast to several previous attempts of this nature, in this case the entire orchestra functions as a completely integrated and organic musical body rather than Jazz vs. Classical ensembles, which completely fail to complement each other. The music is simply magnificent, deeply melodic and highly intelligent, with sublime arrangements and perfect atmospheric treatment, flowing seamlessly from one theme to the next, and when the album reaches its end the listener is left lingering with a strong desire for more. Towns uses the entire palette at the disposal of a composer, both the orchestral and instrumental solo parts and in this case also vocal parts, beautifully performed by the divine Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist and Italian singer Maria Pia De VitoFind albums by this artist. I suppose Towns is familiar with these examples and I’m happy to see him creating an up-to-date example of this compositional device. The music is truly grand, rich and sophisticated; somewhat similar to Classical Music at times, but more dynamic and of course retaining the element of swing, which clearly keeps the music well inside the overall framework of Jazz. Perfect performances, with many splendid solo parts and the fantastic sound quality all contribute to the success of this album, which deserves a worthy place in the Pantheon of the valued British Jazz tradition. Although requiring attentive listening, patience and open-mindedness, this music is richly rewarding and holds many intellectual as well as emotional qualities, which should keep all Jazz lovers happy. British pianist / composer / arranger / bandleader Colin TownsFind albums by this artist, one the most talented and prolific European Jazz composers, is renown for his work in a variety of musical settings, which include cinema, TV and Jazz big band. Therefore it is no surprise that the Birmingham Royal Ballet would commission Towns to compose a suite, to be used as the accompaniment for the ballet’s performance. The composer stood up to the challenge admirably, as documented on this album. The music, inspired by the Greek mythological hero Orpheus, is performed by Towns’ Mask OrchestraFind albums by this artist, which includes an expanded percussion section allowing a more rhythmic emphasis in the music. Although intended for the ballet, the music stands perfectly on its own and is able to inspire and touch the listener even without the visual counterpart. The separate pieces of the suite differ from each other in many respects, but sustain a feeling of continuity and conceptual unity. Slightly more percussive at times than Towns’ usual compositions (as appropriate for modern dance) some of the parts are also beautifully melancholic, creating a stunningly dramatic atmosphere of the entire suite. The music is quite complex, presenting the band with challenging obstacles, but the experienced and talented musicians of this caliber conquer the difficulty with flying colors. Distinguished soloist like Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist and Peter KingFind albums by this artist (saxophone) and Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist (trumpet), along with younger but highly skilled players in the band deliver an all round excellent performance. The album includes a bonus track, which was considered, but eventually not included in the ballet performance. All in all this is another momentous achievement for Towns and his band, worthy of an honorable place in any serious Jazz music collection. On a side note, I wonder if the tragic fate of Orpheus, a poet and musician, who tried to cheat death using his artistic skills and perished himself in the process, is not a metaphor one can easily apply to artists even in our times. After all Orpheus did achieve immortality, even if only as a myth, so perhaps the role of all artists lies primarily with whatever is left as their legacy, by which they will be remembered?

Each and every one of these pieces is an absolute gem, perfectly rounded and complete like a mini-suite, representing all the best in British / European Jazz: delicate aesthetics, superb taste, intelligence and deep understanding of music. This album is one of the most perfect examples of large ensemble Jazz ever recorded and should be a schoolbook example of Jazz arrangement.

The music is also beautifully performed by these Master musicians, who contribute perfect ensemble playing as well as beautiful soli, all relatively concise due to the album´s timing limitations, but nevertheless perfectly rounded and expressive. Altogether these seventy two minutes of music round up almost everything there is to say in a mainstream Jazz ensemble format.

I have no idea how this nugget managed to slip under my radar for so many years; better late than never is the only solace. The music brings so many memories and associations about British Jazz and its history, that listening to it for the first time was a deeply emotional experience for me. Repeated listening sessions revealed the depth of the arrangements and the incredible craft involved in making it. It is a true masterpiece in every respect.

I can hardly imagine a proper British Jazz collection being complete without this album being part of it, and therefore grab a copy as long as it is still available. You can thank me later on, after you have listened to it ;)

This magnificent album marks a pivotal point in the career of pianist / composer Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist, a transition between the first and the second phases of his monumental life’s achievement. Since it is a suite composed for and performed by a large ensemble (19 musicians in this case), it continues the pioneering work by Westbrook as a composer of large scale orchestral music and closes the cycle which started with the debut "CelebrationFind albums with this title" and continued with "ReleaseFind albums with this title", "Marching SongsFind albums with this title", "Love SongsFind albums with this title" and "MetropolisFind albums with this title".

In between “Metropolis” and "Citadel / Room 315Find albums with this title" Westbrook ventured into Jazz-Rock Fusion with the group Solid Gold CadillacFind albums by this artist, returning to Jazz with the new suite, which was commissioned by the Swedish Radio Jazz Group with John SurmanFind albums by this artist as a guest soloist. It was first performed and recorded in 1974, but for various reasons the recording was not released, so Westbrook decided to record it with a British lineup, following several performances in UK a year later.

Superbly arranged and performed, this is an epic achievement, sadly one of the last great Jazz works of such scale, as the climate in Britain was about to change very soon and the magnificent Golden Decade was facing an inevitable comedown. Westbrook was of course to continue his extraordinary work as a composer, but his albums will be gradually released on small independent labels and sell meagerly. Well, we still have this essential recording to re-visit any time we feel a need to refill out batteries with some highly charged musical delight. Essential!

The fact that this music is available again is a joyful occasion indeed and in the sad days of dying Culture a graceful reminder of what used to be considered as music is most refreshing.

This is a definite classic recording of the British / European Jazz history and a milestone in the history of Jazz vocals and should be an essential part of any serious music collection.
