DICK MORRISSEY ~ AT THE BBC 1967
RHYTHM AND BLUES 074 (Barcode: 5060331752608) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1967 Released: 2021

This is an archival album by seminal British saxophonist / composer / bandleader Dick MorrisseyFind albums by this artist. The album presents two BBC sessions captured in June and October 1967 performed by his quartet, with included pianist Harry SouthFind albums by this artist, bassist Phil BatesFind albums by this artist and drummer Bill EydenFind albums by this artist. The two sessions produced twelve tracks, with three tunes repeated in both sessions, most being Jazz standards and just one original by South.

The music is all well within the mainstream Jazz idiom, but formidably performed by the quartet and presents Morrissey as a wonderfully talented player, considered at the time as second only to the legendary Tubby HayesFind albums by this artist. Morrissey fans should definitely put their hands on the VocalionFind albums on this label twofer reissue “Here And Now And Sounding Good / Storm Warning!Find albums with this title” of his 1965/66 studio albums, which offer similar music to what can be herd here. The sound quality of these recordings if excellent, which of course makes listening to the music a true pleasure.

Following his Bebop / Hard Bop period, by the end of the 1960s Morrissey switched to the Jazz-Rock Fusion idiom, first with the brilliant group IfFind albums by this artist, which lasted till 1975 and recorded eight albums and later with the Morrissey-Mullen BandFind albums by this artist, formed with guitarist Jim MullenFind albums by this artist, which lasted for fifteen years and recorded seven excellent albums.

Morrissey died from cancer in 2000 at the age of 60, as usual in such cases way too early, as his glorious recording legacy proves.

MICHAEL GARRICK ~ A NEW SERIOUS MUSIC
RHYTHM AND BLUES 076 (Barcode: 5060331752615) ~ UK ~ Jazz & Poetry

Recorded: 1967 - 1969 Released: 2021

This is an archival album by seminal British pianist / composer / bandleader Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist. The album presents two BBC sessions, the first captured on July 23, 1967 which includes five original compositions by Garrick, performed with trumpeter Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Jim PhilipFind albums by this artist and Art ThemenFind albums by this artist, bassist Coleridge GoodeFind albums by this artist and drummer Trevor TomkinsFind albums by this artist. Each of the music tracks in preceded by a spoken introduction by Humphrey LittletonFind albums by this artist. The second session, captured on October 10, 1969 includes six original compositions by Garrick, performed by trumpeter Ian CarrFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Don RendellFind albums by this artist and Themen, Goode, Tomkins and vocalist Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist and with poetry readings by poets John SmithFind albums by this artist and Jeremy RobsonFind albums by this artist. Each of the music tracks in preceded by a spoken introduction by Garrick, which results in the album having no less than twenty-two tracks.

During the period between these two sessions Garrick was living a “double life”, dividing his time between the Don Rendell / Ian Carr QuintetFind albums by this artist and his own ensembles, producing some of the most significant new British Jazz, of which he was one of the most important architects, especially so as a composer. His astonishing diversity, which includes “straightforward” (well never really straightforward) Jazz, Free Jazz, Jazz-Choral music, and the Jazz & Poetry explorations, like those portrayed by the second session included here, made him a key figure of the new British Jazz, crystalizing at the time.

The music, although captured over five decades ago, is still a full blow in the face to those unfamiliar with Garrick’s multi-layered musical universe. I have been incredibly fortunate to hear Garrick perform live during that period and the long conversations we had together, after the music was over, about music (and poetry) with the baby-faced, always smiling Garrick are forever implanted in my mind.

Music lovers interested in that period of Garrick’s activity should try and revisit all the fabulous recordings he made then, like “Poetry And Jazz In ConcertFind albums with this title”, “October WomanFind albums with this title”, “PromisesFind albums with this title”, “Black MarigoldsFind albums with this title”, “Jazz Praises At St Paul`sFind albums with this title”, “The Heart Is A LotusFind albums with this title”, which have been reissued by VocalionFind albums on this label or Garrick’s own Jazz AcademyFind albums on this label label. Any serious British Jazz collection is not complete with these titles missing.

Overall this is a milestone album, with previously never released material, which is worth its weight in gold. Although the sound quality of the second session included herein is somewhat distorted at times, this can be easily forgotten in view of the historical importance of the music. Warmly recommended!

MICHAEL GARRICK ~ MOONSCAPE
TRUNK 022 (Barcode: 666017162621) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1964 Released: 2007

Pianist / composer Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist has been one of the great pioneers of modern British Jazz and his 1960s / 1970s recordings on the ArgoFind albums on this label label (now reissued on VocalionFind albums on this label) constitute some of the best examples of the wonderful period, when Jazz was at its absolute creative peak. Garrick did made an early recording in 1964 with his trio (Garrick – piano, Dave GreenFind albums by this artist – bass and Colin BarnesFind albums by this artist – drums), which was privately issued with 99 copies pressed. Over the years this 10-inch LP became not only legendary but also one of the most expensive Jazz collector’s items reaching astronomical prices on the market with only a few originals surviving the tides of time.

Therefore having this album available again on CD is a marvel, thanks to Jonny TrunkFind albums by this artist and his very special TrunkFind albums on this label Records label. As the original tapes were of course lost in time, the CD was mastered from a pristine copy of the LP with spectacular results - the sound is just beautiful. As to the music, well I’m not objective being Garrick’s fan for many years, but this is a monumental piece of music – one of the earliest examples of modern European Jazz, which steps way beyond anything in existence at the time.

The compositions (all by Garrick) were inspired by poetry, as Garrick was at the time involved with the Jazz & Poetry movement, and show his incredible talent for melody and the ability to “twist” a tune in a most wonderful fashion. Marvelous stuff! I can’t imagine any Garrick or early modern British Jazz fan not wanting this one.

TONY KINSEY ~ INTRODUCING / JAZZ AT THE FLAMINGO SESSION
VOCALION 4213 (Barcode: 765387421328) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1956 - 1957 Released: 2003

Drummer / composer / arranger Tony KinseyFind albums by this artist was one of the brightest stars on the modern British Jazz scene at its inception. Founder member of the Johnny Dankworth SevenFind albums by this artist in 1950, Kinsey later started to lead his own quintet and the first of the two albums included on this wonderful reissue is his debut recording with that quintet. Featuring a double saxophone front line the quintet included saxophonists Don RendellFind albums by this artist and Ronnie RossFind albums by this artist, pianist / vibraphonist Bill Le SageFind albums by this artist and bassist Pete BlanninFind albums by this artist. The second album is a live recording done just a few months after the debut and features the same rhythm section with two different saxophonists: Joe HarriottFind albums by this artist and Bob EffordFind albums by this artist. The music is mostly Jazz standards with few originals by Kinsey, Le Sage and Harriott, but the arrangements are completely different from the usual Bebop approach, adding some Cool and European tradition into the mix. The result clearly shows the seeds of the complete revolution and emancipation from the American Jazz that would follow just a few years after these recordings were made. Clearly Rendell and Harriott are such virtuosi players that they could blow any American saxophonist off the stage with ease. This is some of the best European early modern Jazz and the beautifully remastered sound just makes everything perfect. Absolutely brilliant stuff!

ALAN COHEN ~ RUNNIN` WILD / BLACK, BROWN & BEIGE
VOCALION 4252 (Barcode: 765387425227) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1972 - 1974 Released: 2005

Two brilliant albums by British arranger / conductor / bandleader Alan CohenFind albums by this artist, which he recorded with his orchestras, paying tribute to Jazz tradition and especially its Big Band heroes. Both albums were originally released on the ArgoFind albums on this label label. "Runnin` WildFind albums with this title", recorded in 1974, is a tribute to Paul WhitemanFind albums by this artist, who dominated the early (1920s) jazz scene in the US, leading an orchestra, which incorporated the best Jazz players of the time. "Black, Brown & BeigeFind albums with this title", recorded in 1972, is a tribute to Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist, who started in the early 1940s to compose a series of superb Jazz suites, of which this was the first and which was unfortunately never properly recorded in its entirety by its creator. Cohen managed to assemble the pieces of the puzzle 30 years later and this is the first time we´re able to hear this magnificent piece of music as intended. Cohen´s orchestras included the best players on the burgeoning British Jazz scene at the time: Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist and Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist (trumpet), Malcolm GriffithsFind albums by this artist and Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist (trombone) Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist and Art ThemenFind albums by this artist (saxophones), Alan JacksonFind albums by this artist (drums) and many more. Together these two albums are a wonderful glimpse at the Jazz history, presenting wonderful music, performed with inspiration and love. Brilliant stuff!

MICHAEL GIBBS ~ MICHAEL GIBBS / TANGLEWOOD 63
VOCALION 4253 (Barcode: 765387425326) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1969 - 1970 Released: 2005

Composer / arranger / bandleader / trombonist Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist was born in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). In his early twenties he moved to the US, where he studied both Jazz and Classical music at the Berklee College of Music, the Boston Conservatory and the Tanglewood Institute, where he studied with renowned classical composers Aaron CoplandFind albums by this artist and Lukas FossFind albums by this artist. In 1965 Gibbs settled in London and immediately was absorbed into the burgeoning local Jazz scene, first as a trombonist, and later when he stopped to play the instrument, as a composer, arranger and bandleader. Over the years he assembled an impressive body of work as a composer, which has been considered as some of the most innovative and daring forays into the fusion of Classical, Jazz and Rock. He recorded many of his compositions using large ensembles, which comprised of the best British and later also European Jazz musicians, all of which are considered masterpieces. He also composed music for cinema and created many incredible arrangements for albums in the Rock and Jazz areas. This album combines his two first albums, composed for and performed by huge ensembles including brass, string and rhythm sections and including around 30 musicians. The names of the participants resemble the “who’s who” of the British Jazz scene at the time and the main soloists are: Chris SpeddingFind albums by this artist, Ray RussellFind albums by this artist (guitar), Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist (trumpet), Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist, John SurmanFind albums by this artist, Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist (sax), Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist (piano), Jack BruceFind albums by this artist, Brian OdgersFind albums by this artist (bass), Tony OxleyFind albums by this artist, John MarshallFind albums by this artist (drums) and many more. The music is quite incredible of course, very difficult to classify, as it flows between genres and musical landscapes disregarding any preconceptions. Gibbs is a master at creating an internal tension in his scores, which is often expressed by the role the brass and rhythm sections play against each other, with the brass section representing the jazzy elements and the rhythm section (especially the guitar) the rock elements. The music is often contemplative and moves slowly, similarly to many of the modern Classical music pieces, influenced obviously by the composer’s teachers and resembling sometimes even the work of Philip GlassFind albums by this artist. Definitely not easy listening, but a highly rewarding intellectual experience. For the lack of a better alternative I’ve decided to classify it under Jazz, but this music is truly beyond classification and constitutes a class of its own. Fascinating!

TONY KINSEY ~ HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING / TIME GENTLEMEN PLEA
VOCALION 4262 (Barcode: 765387426224) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1958 - 1963 Released: 2005

British drummer Tony KinseyFind albums by this artist was one of the pillars of the local Jazz scene in the crucial period of late 1950s and early 1960s when British Jazz was absorbing the influences of the American Jazz and transforming them slowly into a new language of European Jazz. Although still very much influenced by American Bebop players, Kinsey and his quintet took the music a step further, replacing the raw energy of Bebop with European sophistication and classic harmony, producing highly intelligent music which was also elegant and although seemingly straight-forward, quite complex at its core. These two albums, from 1963 and 1958 present two of Kinsey´s quintets, both including trumpeter Les CondonFind albums by this artist, but the 1963 quintet includes two young players, which were destined to be crucial figure on the British Jazz scene in the decade that followed, saxophonist Peter KingFind albums by this artist and brilliant pianist Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist. This is great music, richly deserving to be remembered, and this reissue is truly a great opportunity to take a glimpse at this interesting period of early European Jazz. Warmly recommended!

VOCALION 4281 (Barcode: 765387428129) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1965 - 1968 Released: 2005

In parallel to his immensely important contributions in the Jazz field, British trumpeter Shake KeaneFind albums by this artist also recorded three crossover Jazz / Pop albums for the DeccaFind albums on this label label in the 1960s, which although being on the "lighter" side of things are still prime examples of his amazing tone and virtuosity. The remastered edition of the 1967 album "That`s The NoiseFind albums with this title" (the second of the three) was released on a separate album on the Vocalion label, and here are the other two. "With The Keating SoundFind albums with this title" form 1965 features Keane performing a great selection of Jazz standards, arranged and orchestrated by Johnny KeatingFind albums by this artist and accompanied by the gorgeous orchestra led by him. Keating´s orchestra, as many similar British orchestras at the time, included the best studio musicians, many of which were also active on the Jazz scene. "Dig It!Find albums with this title", from 1968, features Keane performing contemporary Pop material, again arranged and orchestrated for an orchestra, this time by Ivor RaymondeFind albums by this artist, and feature quite unusual approach to Pop material. Both albums are a great document of the great trumpeter´s genius, and of course include music, which stands the test of time quite well. Recommended for listeners who prefer the more melodic side of Jazz.

DON RENDELL ~ PLAYTIME
VOCALION 4284 (Barcode: 765387428426) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1955 - 1959 Released: 2005

Saxophonist / composer Don RendellFind albums by this artist is a prominent figure on the UK Jazz scene for over 5 decades. Since his earliest recordings in the mid-1950s and well into the 2000s, his unmistakable tone and total control of his instrument have been his trademark. Although mostly known for his role as a co-leader of the Don Rendell / Ian CarrFind albums by this artist Quintet, one of Britain’s most innovative and brilliant Jazz ensembles of the late 1960s, over the years he recorded hundreds of sessions as sideman and leader. This album brings back to life his second LP recorded in 1958 (the first, called Meet Don RendellFind albums with this title was a 10-inch LP recorded 3 years earlier). The bonus tracks include two EP recordings, one form 1955 and the other from 1959. At the time these sessions were recorded the UK Jazz scene was strongly influenced by American Jazz. Rendell was a member of the legendary Ted HeathFind albums by this artist and Stan KentonFind albums by this artist orchestras and toured along with Gerry MulliganFind albums by this artist and the Modern Jazz QuartetFind albums by this artist, which gave him ample opportunity to hear the Masters and learn from them. By the time he formed the sextet that recorded this album Rendell was a seasoned musician and knew exactly what he wants to do. The music includes four original compositions by the sextet members (two of which are Rendell’s) and six standards. The arrangements are very clever and often quite different from the usual approach at the time, being an early sign of the new way the British musicians were about to treat the US Jazz tradition. The performances are spotless and inspired and overall this is a most enjoyable piece of great music, somewhere between Swing, Cool and Hard Bop. Most warmly recommended.

JOHN DANKWORTH ~ 5 STEPS TO DANKWORTH / JOURNEY INTO JAZZ
VOCALION 5303 (Barcode: 765387530327) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1956 - 1957 Released: 2008

Saxophonist / composer / bandleader John DankworthFind albums by this artist is one of the Godfathers of modern British Jazz. His activities on the local and international scenes since the early 1950s were instrumental in establishing a whole new generation of Jazz players, which eventually led to the flourishing and revolutionary British Jazz of the 1960s. After his first group - the John Dankworth SevenFind albums by this artist – disbanded, Dankworth established the John Dankworth OrchestraFind albums by this artist, the first British modern Big Band, which consisted of the best Jazz players in Britain at the time. Dankworth´s superb compositions and magnificent arrangements, aided by the virtuosity of his band members, were among the finest in the world and easily compared to the American Big Bands of Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist, Count BasieFind albums by this artist and others, often surpassing their output with the sophistication and finesse of its works. This great reissue presents Dankworth´s first two recordings with his Orchestra, the debut "Journey Into JazzFind albums with this title", which includes the suite "Itinerary of an Orchestra" – Dankworth´s presentation of a Jazz Orchestra similar in concept to Benjamin BrittenFind albums by this artist´s "Young Person´s Guide to the Orchestra". As most of Dankworth´s compositions the arrangements were made by the excellent "in house" arranger David LindupFind albums by this artist. "5 Steps Into DankworthFind albums with this title", subtitled "Presenting the Music of Johnny Dankworth", concentrates on his talents as a composer and emphasized the magnificent full power of the Big Band. Together these two albums are a true treasure of great music, which lost nothing of its power and ingenuity over the years and sound completely relevant today. Brilliant stuff!

THAD JONES ~ MAD THAD / OLIO
VOCALION 5307 (Barcode: 765387530723) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1957 Released: 2009

US trumpeter / composer Thad JonesFind albums by this artist (a member of the extensive Jones clan, which includes Quincy, Jimmy, Jo, Eddie and Thad´s younger brother Elvin) paid his dues in full on the NY scene, playing with the American who´s who of Jazz. His unique lyrical tone and his great feel for melody made him one of the greatest trumpeters of his time. This excellent reissue brings back to life two lovely recordings from the late 1950s, featuring Jones as a soloist in front of superb ensembles, which include such famous names as Frank FosterFind albums by this artist (sax) Frank WessFind albums by this artist (sax and flute) Tommy FlanaganFind albums by this artist (piano), Mal WaldronFind albums by this artist (piano) and many others. Although his most famous moments would come only about a decade later, when Jones was to co-lead one of the best ever Big Bands with drummer Mel LewisFind albums by this artist, these recordings show him in a more intimate setting, which emphasizes his excellent skills as a player and improviser. I had a real fun listening to these albums (which were out of circulation for ages), a reminder of times when life was simpler and music better. Recommended!

JOHN DANKWORTH ~ DUET FOR 16
VOCALION 6230 (Barcode: 765387623029) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1959 Released: 2015

This is an archival recording by the British Jazz saxophonist / composer / bandleader John DankworthFind albums by this artist and his orchestra. Taken from the BBC vaults, the music collected here was originally recorded during three sessions as part of the BBC´s transcription recordings, which were then broadcasted around the world by the BBC World Service. This particular recording includes spoken commentary in French and must have been intended for the French speaking territories; France, Belgium and perhaps Canada.

Apart from the theme which is used as the opening and closing track, the album includes nineteen compositions, which include five Dankworth originals. Rest of the material is either standards or material composed by David LindupFind albums by this artist, who was the staff composer / arranger often collaborating with Dankworth.

The orchestra´s lineup includes some of the top British Jazz players at the time, including the new arrival in UK, trumpeter Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist. The excellent rhythm section comprised of pianist Derek SmithFind albums by this artist, bassist Eric DawsonFind albums by this artist and drummer Kenny ClareFind albums by this artist.

Stylistically the music mimics the American Big Band tradition, which was very popular in Britain during the post-WWII period. Therefore the orchestra plays easy swinging music, which is very well executed, but hardly innovative or challenging in any way. Dankworth represents the transitional British Jazz generation, which was deeply rooted in the American tradition and never really moved into the modern Jazz idiom completely, although he was certainly open minded in comparison to many of his contemporaries, and did include a certain element of experimentation in his later work.

These recordings are a snapshot of a period when Jazz was extremely popular and even served as dance music to a large part of the population. The popularity, however, demanded that the music would be kept strictly within closely defined melodic and rhythmic boundaries. One the modern British Jazz emerged by the mid 1960s Jazz naturally lost its popularity.

Having said all that, this album is still a great fun to listen to and a wonderful piece of British Jazz history, which deserves to be remembered. Dankworth and his orchestra prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Jazz can be played by Europeans without any inferiority complexes attached.

MICHAEL GARRICK ~ THE HEART IS A LOTUS
VOCALION 8400 (Barcode: 765387840020) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2005

Pianist / composer Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist has been an icon of British Jazz for the last five decades. His exquisite touch on the keyboards, deep lyricism and unparalleled inventiveness as a composer characterize his entire legacy over time, which has very little rivalry or precedence. This album presents Garrick leading a sextet (Garrick – piano and harpsichord, Ian CarrFind albums by this artist – trumpet, Art ThemenFind albums by this artist – flute, clarinet and sax, Dave GreenFind albums by this artist – bass, Trevor TomkinsFind albums by this artist – drums and the divine Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist – vocals) and on several tracks the ensemble is expanded to a nonet with the edition of Don RendellFind albums by this artist – sax, Jim PhilipFind albums by this artist – flute, clarinet and sax and Coleridge GoodeFind albums by this artist on second bass. Norma’s vocal parts – both when singing lyrics and improvising, using her voice as an instrument – are absolutely stunning and completely innovative. Her presence brings the music to another dimension, adding colors and enhancing the overall effect tremendously. She would become a permanent member of Garrick’s group for a while and their recordings together are some of the best moments of the British Jazz of that period. As usual, Garrick wrote all the music and this time also the lyrics used here. His formal education was after all English Literature, and hence his sensitivity to language and poetry and his writing abilities are no surprise. Beautifully melodic and yet constantly challenging, this is a superb album, which sound today every bit as great as it did at the time it was recorded. A must!

TERRY DURHAM ~ CRYSTAL TELEPHONE
VOCALION 8401 (Barcode: 765387840129) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1969 Released: 2005

Writer, poet and painter Terry DurhamFind albums by this artist recorded this one-off, strangely beautiful album for the DeramFind albums on this label label and disappeared from sight. The fact that a major record label released such unusual and unconventional production proves the incredible atmosphere of the late 1960s, before the record industry became completely ruthless and unsympathetic to innovation and musical progress.

The album includes a series of poems by Durham, which he recites (partly in spoken word and partly singing) on top of a magnificent musical background composed and orchestrated by John ColemanFind albums by this artist. The words and music fit one another perfectly and Durham’s poems stand the test of time beautifully. Although the full list of musicians participating in the recording is not given, a most notable, and again highly unusual appearance by Free Jazz saxophone giant Evan ParkerFind albums by this artist is one of the highlights of the album. Guitarist Alan ParkerFind albums by this artist also makes a notable appearance and the composer’s piano playing is featured as well.

Make no mistake – this is not a Jazz album at all. In fact it’s almost impossible to categorize at all, as it transcends genres and conventions at will. For the lack of a better solution I placed it under Progressive Rock, but it belongs probably more to a non-existent Poetry and Music sub-genre (as opposed to Jazz & Poetry which is a real sub-genre). Genres aside, this is a wonderful memento of a great time, which sounds today as good as it ever did. Wholeheartedly recommended to the adventurous listeners.

JOHN SURMAN ~ JOHN SURMAN
VOCALION 8402 (Barcode: 765387840228) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1968 Released: 2005

Saxophonist / composer John SurmanFind albums by this artist is a true icon of the British / European Jazz scene for over four decades. The immense body of work Surman produced over the years, starting with his numerous UK recordings in the late 1960s and 1970s and then through his association with the German ECMFind albums on this label label, reflect the absolute pinnacle of European Jazz. John’s incredible improvisational ability and masterly technique on several reed instruments made him a most welcome contributor to scores of pivotal albums recorded in the formative years of British modern Jazz, with such illustrious names as Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist, Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist, Graham CollierFind albums by this artist, John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist (ExtrapolationFind albums with this title) and many others. His work is always characterized by pioneering achievements, embracing new technology and new musical forms and constantly changing, like a true musical chameleon. This album is his debut as a leader and might come as quite a surprise to listeners, who are familiar with his more contemporary works. The album presents two quite distinctive sides of his musical personality at the time, appropriately divided between what used to be Side A and Side B of the original LP. Surman plays the baritone saxophone exclusively on this album, demonstrating his command of the instrument. On Side A he leads a sextet with Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist (his close associate at the time) – alto sax and Harry MillerFind albums by this artist – bass, exploring some Caribbean / calypso rhythms and playing music not composed by himself (Sonny RollinsFind albums by this artist is the composer of one of the four tracks). On Side B the ensemble is expanded to an eleven-piece band, including Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist and Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist – trumpets, Malcolm GriffithsFind albums by this artist and Paul RutherfordFind albums by this artist – trombones, Dave HollandFind albums by this artist – bass, Alan JacksonFind albums by this artist – drums and others. The music is a wonderful three-piece suite composed by Surman, a prime example of the British modern Jazz, with superb solos and free-form passages, culminating in a powerful big band orgy of sound. Definitely something any Surman fan will be happy to add to his collection and a beautiful piece of the puzzle representing Surman’s musical legacy.

His virtuosity and versatility resulted in him being a member in many groups (often simultaneously) and in different musical environments like Rock (Manfred MannFind albums by this artist), Jazz-Rock (Keef HartleyFind albums by this artist), Blues (John MayallFind albums by this artist) and Jazz (Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist, Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist, Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist) as well as participating in hundreds of recordings as a session musician. Overall the album stands the test of time with flying colors and I can wholeheartedly recommend it every Jazz buff, but of course especially to people partial to the British Jazz scene. Great stuff!

VOCALION 8405 (Barcode: 765387840525) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1971 Released: 2005

This strange and beautiful album would have never been released at the time if not for the openness of the DeramFind albums on this label label to issue even the most eccentric material, as long as it had musical merit. The Chitinous EnsembleFind albums by this artist was as fictitious as they come, so named by cellist / composer / arranger Paul BuckmasterFind albums by this artist, who assembled the musicians to perform an ambitious piece of orchestral music he composed. Buckmaster was a gifted and accomplished musician, who was in great demand in UK as arranger and composer, working with top Rock stars like Elton JohnFind albums by this artist, the Bee GeesFind albums by this artist (see OdessaFind albums with this title) and even the Rolling StonesFind albums by this artist (see Sticky FingersFind albums with this title). He also composed numerous film scores, including the amazing soundtrack for Roman PolanskiFind albums by this artist’s MacbethFind albums with this title, where he cooperated with the Third Ear BandFind albums by this artist. The ensemble Buckmaster assembled to perform this complex extended composition includes a large string section and a large deployment of his Jazz buddies, all top British Jazz players like Ian CarrFind albums by this artist on trumpet, Chris LaurenceFind albums by this artist on bass, John MarshallFind albums by this artist on drums and many more. The music is a mixture of classical influences with Jazz-Rock rhythmic patterns and modern sound vistas, all combined together into a wonderful sonic experience. It sounds absolutely great today as if time only enhanced the intrinsic beauty included therein. Wholeheartedly recommended for more adventurous listeners.

ALAN SKIDMORE ~ ONCE UPON A TIME…
VOCALION 8406 (Barcode: 765387840624) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2005

The title of the debut album by saxophonist / composer Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist is indeed appropriate for the occasion, as this is a recording of such beauty and excellence, that is happens extremely rarely. Alan, son of veteran British Jazz figure Jimmy SkidmoreFind albums by this artist, earned his own reputation by storming the modern British Jazz in the late 1960s. He participated in numerous pivotal recordings as sideman, and his debut turned out to be just it – the absolutely perfect example of what was happening at the time. If I had to select just one album, which represents the British scene at that time, this would be it. Skidmore on tenor sax leads a perfect quintet with Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist on trumpet, John TaylorFind albums by this artist on piano, Harry MillerFind albums by this artist on bass and Tony OxleyFind albums by this artist on drums (yes they were John SurmanFind albums by this artist’s rhythm section as well). Of the six exquisite compositions present, two are by John Surman, and the rest by Tony Oxley, John WarrenFind albums by this artist, John Taylor and Alan Skidmore, each contributing one composition. Whatever I’ll say here does not come even close to listening to this music, so do yourself a favor and grab a copy – this is something I’ve been listening to for almost 40 years and it still grabs me each and every time, so it must be really special. Essential stuff!

MIKE WESTBROOK ~ LOVE SONGS
VOCALION 8407 (Barcode: 765387840723) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2005

Pianist / bandleader / composer Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist is a true icon of the British Jazz scene for over four decades. The immense body of work Westbrook produced over the years parallels the achievements of many Classical composers and in fact should be considered as contemporary Classical music, although he is mostly associated with the Jazz genre. In the late 1960s / 1970s Westbrook concentrated mostly on his work with Jazz Big Bands, which he led and composed the music for. He usually composed large orchestral suites, based on conceptual or literary content, again similar to the modus operandi of Classical composers. His legendary Big Bands / orchestras comprised of the creme de la creme of the British Jazz musicians active at the time and were one of the most fascinating grounds of musical experimentation. Later on Westbrook would work mainly in smaller ensembles, which include his wife the singer Kate WestbrookFind albums by this artist, producing a series of wonderful compositions often similar in spirit to the work of composer Kurt WeillFind albums by this artist and often involving interpretation of European poetry and other literary works. This album presents a song cycle dedicated to the poems by Caroline MenisFind albums by this artist, and features Britain’s greatest female Jazz vocalist Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist. The band consists of saxophonists Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist, John WarrenFind albums by this artist and George KhanFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Dave HoldsworthFind albums by this artist, trombonists Malcolm GriffithsFind albums by this artist and Paul RutherfordFind albums by this artist and a rhythm section: Chris SpeddingFind albums by this artist – guitar, Mike Westbrook – piano, Harry MillerFind albums by this artist – bass and Alan JacksonFind albums by this artist – drums, all stellar Jazz musicians. Of course Westbrook’s music is never trivial and requires some serious listening to be truly appreciated, but the intellectual effort is richly rewarded. This reissue includes a super-rare single released at the time to promote the album. Timeless stuff and a must to any true Jazz lover - most warmly recommended.

SHAKE KEANE ~ THAT`S THE NOISE
VOCALION 8408 (Barcode: 765387840822) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1967 Released: 2005

Trumpeter / composer Shake KeaneFind albums by this artist was born in St Vincent (West Indies) and emigrated to Britain in the early 1950s. His superb tone and total control of his instrument was immediately recognized and the local music scene immediately absorbed him, providing plenty of opportunities for him to play in a variety of styles. By the end of the 1950s Keane almost completely to playing Jazz and became one of the spearheading figures of the British modern / free Jazz. He was a member of the pioneering group led by saxophonist Joe HarriottFind albums by this artist, with whom he recorded some of the most pivotal early European free Jazz. He was also a member, together with Harriott, in the groups led by pianist Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist.

Keane’s prime interest was actually in poetry and literature, which gave him his nickname, as short for Shakespeare. Playing with Garrick, he participated in the Jazz & Poetry scene, which of course was only appropriate for his field of interest.

Keane left Britain in the late 1960s, first to Germany and later returning to his native island, where he became a government minister of culture. He continued his literary work and published works of prose and poetry. A few years before his death in 1997 he returned to his musical activities and even recorded new albums. Strangely enough, in the midst of his activity in the Avant-Garde Jazz field, Keane recorded a few solo albums, which present another side of his musical personality. These albums could be considered as belonging to the “lighter” side of Jazz, where Keane mostly played adaptations of Pop songs of the period.

This album is one of these, and although at the time it was criticized as being a “sell-out”, in retrospect it is a real gem. Keane does use a set of Pop songs (BeatlesFind albums by this artist, Rolling StonesFind albums by this artist, DonovanFind albums by this artist and others) as the basis, but the clever and unusual arrangements and his phenomenal improvisational skills turn these songs inside out and the overall effect is truly spectacular. A couple of his original compositions are also included and one more by his partner Joe Harriott. He leads a splendid sextet with Bob EffordFind albums by this artist – sax, Olaf VasFind albums by this artist – flute, Pat SmytheFind albums by this artist – piano, Coleridge GoodeFind albums by this artist – bass and Bobby OrrFind albums by this artist – drums (Stan TraceyFind albums by this artist plays piano on three tracks), which plays elegantly and effortlessly. I had a real ball listening to this uplifting music. Easy Jazz? Perhaps, but who cares, when it sounds as good as this.

JOHN CAMERON ~ OFF CENTRE
VOCALION 8409 (Barcode: 765387840921) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1969 Released: 2005

British composer / arranger / pianist John CameronFind albums by this artist is mostly known to the world for his pioneering work as a composer of film scores and arranger of countless albums, but in the late 1960s he was also an active Jazz player and his quartet played many gigs at the time and also managed to record this album, which remains to this very day as one of my all time favorites. Unfortunately this is almost the solitary session, which allows us to hear John’s exquisite piano work, and therefore it has also an immense historic importance. The quartet also included three absolutely marvelous players: saxophonists and flautist Harold McNairFind albums by this artist (one of the greatest talents of the British Jazz scene who passed away at a tragically young age), extraordinary bassist Danny ThompsonFind albums by this artist and drummer Tony CarrFind albums by this artist, who was a central figure on the British scene for many years. This album is special for many reasons, but I’ll mention just a few: first the absolutely brilliant compositions by John, with ingenious melodic lines and unusual time signatures – so typical of the British Jazz around that period; second the divine playing by Harold, whose flute work was second to none; third the level of musicianship displayed by all the players, which is absolutely stunning. Combined, all these factors contribute to making this album so special. Hearing it on CD for the first time, with the magnificent remastering by Michael DuttonFind albums by this artist, was a great experience and I’m delighted that this gem is available again to be enjoyed by the new generation of music lovers. Beyond essential!

JOHN SURMAN / JOHN WARREN ~ TALES OF THE ALGONQUIN
VOCALION 8410 (Barcode: 765387841027) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2005

Canadian born saxophonist / composer John WarrenFind albums by this artist and British Jazz giant John SurmanFind albums by this artist were “soul brothers” in many respects: both played primarily the baritone saxophone, both composed fabulous modern Jazz and both played together on many of the period’s pivotal albums. This joint effort was the culmination of their work together, which remains as one of the greatest European Jazz albums of all times. Warren composed all the music, which includes four shorter pieces and the extended five-part suite, which gives the album its title, all performed by a Big Band, comprising of the creme de la creme of British Jazz musicians at the time. It includes trumpeters Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist and Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist, sax players: Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist, Stan SultzmannFind albums by this artist, Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist, John Surman and John Warren, pianist John TaylorFind albums by this artist, bass players: Harry MillerFind albums by this artist and Barre PhillipsFind albums by this artist and drummers: Alan JacksonFind albums by this artist and Stu MartinFind albums by this artist (and other less known players). The compositions, arrangements, orchestration and performances are all stellar from start to finish and the overall quality of the music is completely outstanding and miles ahead of any competition. It is interesting to compare this album with any Big Band recording made at the same time in America and see that the Brits left their American counterparts aeons behind by that time. I have been harshly criticized many times (by Americans of course) for saying that although Americans invented Jazz, Europeans perfected it. Anybody listening to this album and still not admitting this to be true must be completely deaf. To me this is a perfect album, one of very few that deserves to be called “perfect” in every respect. Beyond essential!

MICHAEL GARRICK ~ BLACK MARIGOLDS
VOCALION 8411 (Barcode: 765387841126) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1966 Released: 2005

Pianist / composer Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist has been an icon of British Jazz for the last five decades. His exquisite touch on the keyboards, deep lyricism and unparalleled inventiveness as a composer characterize his entire legacy over time, which has very little rivalry or precedence.

This album presents Garrick in three different settings, emphasizing his immense versatility as a composer and player. As usual, he wrote all the music included here. The main body of the music is played by a magnificent septet, which comprised of the best Jazz players on the British scene at the time: Garrick – piano, Ian CarrFind albums by this artist – trumpet, Joe HarriottFind albums by this artist – sax, Don RendellFind albums by this artist – sax, Tony CoeFind albums by this artist – sax, Dave GreenFind albums by this artist – bass and Trevor TomkinsFind albums by this artist – drums. Garrick’s exquisite compositions and the exemplary performances by the players are just perfect.

Then come several pieces, which continue Garrick’s involvement with the Jazz & Poetry movement, which feature poet John SmithFind albums by this artist reciting his poetry accompanied by smaller ensembles (mainly trio, where Colin BarnesFind albums by this artist plays the drums). Smith wrote specific pieces of poetry to be performed with specific Jazz players, creating a unique experience in the process.

Last come a few pieces where Garrick turns to two atypical for Jazz instruments - harpsichord and celeste – using them in a trio format, emphasizing again his restless pioneering fever. Overall a beautiful album, full of surprises and wonderful moments and a superb document of the era and Garrick’s musical legacy.

NEIL ARDLEY / IAN CARR / MICHAEL GIBBS / STAN TRACEY ~ WILL POWER
VOCALION 8412 (Barcode: 765387841225) ~ UK ~ Jazz

This stunningly beautiful album managed to stay on the top of my personal list for over 30 years now and I love it as much as I did the first time I heard it. It simply represents all the beauty, sophistication and intellectual quality of the British Jazz of the late 1960s / 1970s, perhaps more accurately and more concisely than any other one album. It documents a concert performed at London’s Southwark Cathedral, one of the many events dedicated to Shakespeare’s tercentenary celebrations, and presents four major works written by four great British Jazz composers: Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist, Ian CarrFind albums by this artist, Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist and Stan TraceyFind albums by this artist, dedicated to Shakespeare’s genius.

The list of performers certainly resembles the “Who’s Who” of British Jazz at the time and includes: Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist and Pepi LemerFind albums by this artist – vocals, Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist – trumpet, Tony CoeFind albums by this artist – reeds, Paul BuckmasterFind albums by this artist and Colin WalkerFind albums by this artist – cello, Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist, John TaylorFind albums by this artist and Stan Tracey – keyboards, Ron MathewsonFind albums by this artist – bass, Tony LevinFind albums by this artist – drums and Trevor TomkinsFind albums by this artist – percussion. All the lengthy suites, although quite different from each other, are majestic and respectful to the great poet’s legacy, often touching on Elizabethan era motifs, even if ever so slightly. The ambience of the Cathedral adds to the overall effect and the magic of that performance if caught forever by this extraordinary recording.

Everything that is so great about Jazz – composition, arrangement and performance – is unified here to produce that magical moment, which can never be repeated. I can’t imagine anybody not liking this, and although it’s by far no easy listening, the immediate magnanimity of this music is so apparent that repeated listening could only deepen the experience. Beyond essential!

MICHAEL GARRICK ~ OCTOBER WOMAN
VOCALION 8413 (Barcode: 765387841324) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1964 Released: 2005

Pianist / composer Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist has been an icon of British Jazz for the last five decades. His exquisite touch on the keyboards, deep lyricism and unparalleled inventiveness as a composer characterize his entire legacy over time, which has very little rivalry or precedence. Garrick first came to prominence on the London Jazz scene in the early 1960s, when he took part in the series of Jazz & Poetry concerts organized by poet Jeremy RobsonFind albums by this artist (for more details please read the Poetry And Jazz In ConcertFind albums with this title album description).

The quintet, which recorded this album, was established as a result of these concerts, when the Michael Garrick Trio (Garrick – piano, Coleridge GoodeFind albums by this artist – bass and Colin BarnesFind albums by this artist – drums) were joined by two exceptional players - saxophonist Joe HarriottFind albums by this artist and trumpeter Shake KeaneFind albums by this artist – the first black musicians on the London Jazz scene. Both Harriott and Keane were virtuoso players and their contributions were instrumental in shaping the exceptionally high level of musicianship, which characterized the entire generation of Jazz players at the time.

The music, all composed by Garrick, is also incredible – beautifully crafted and full of lyricism and intrinsic beauty. There are very few Jazz composers around who can write such clever and delightful tunes, often based on very simple basic ideas. This music just has a kind of natural flow, which makes everything fall into place in a most inherent way. This reissue adds to the original album an ultra-rare EP recorded by the quintet, called AnthemFind albums with this title, where the composer combines Jazz with sacred / liturgical music. Using an organ and choir to create the connection between the two musical entities, the musicians create an amazing amalgam of the two. Considering the time this recording was done, Garrick certainly proves he is prepared to challenge any convention head on and come out a champion. Overall an outstanding album of rare beauty, an absolute must to any Jazz lover on this planet.

JOHN MAYER ~ DHAMMAPADA
VOCALION 8414 (Barcode: 765387841423) ~ UK ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1976 Released: 2006

Violinist / bandleader / composer John MayerFind albums by this artist was born in India, where he started his musical studies. In the early 1950s he arrived in London to study at the Royal Academy of Music and later on was absorbed by the local scene, being one of the true pioneers in merging the Eastern and Western musical traditions, practically inventing the Jazz-World Fusion genre. In the late 1960s / early 1970s Mayer co-led an ensemble with saxophonist Joe HarriottFind albums by this artist, which recorded a series of revolutionary albums called Indo-Jazz FusionsFind albums with this title, which to this day are the absolutely best examples of the genre. Unfortunately with Harriott’s death in 1973 the ensemble disbanded. This album is an absolute sensation, as it presents a suite commissioned and recorded in 1976, but previously never released. A group of musicians, including some of the best Jazz players at the time (Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist – trumpet, Tony CoeFind albums by this artist – sax and clarinet and others) and players of Eastern instruments like tabla, sitar, koto, etc., directed by Mayer recorded this marvelous music, which goes beyond incorporating Jazz and Indian music, but also includes Korean and Japanese motifs. The music is absolutely breathtaking and the thought of it being hidden for almost 30 years is truly outrageous. Fortunately we can all enjoy it now, and as usual better late than never seems to be appropriate. I can’t recommend this album enough, as it is a true masterpiece and should touch the heart of every music lover on this planet. Essential!

Recorded: 1972 Released: 2006

Pianist / composer Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist has been an icon of British Jazz for the last five decades. His exquisite touch on the keyboards, deep lyricism and unparalleled inventiveness as a composer characterize his entire legacy over time, which has very little rivalry or precedence. This album presents Garrick in the most intimate (and my favorite) Jazz format – the piano trio – with Dave GreenFind albums by this artist on bass and Trevor TomkinsFind albums by this artist on drums. Garrick, as usual, wrote all the music, which is sublime from start to finish. His playing is also absolutely marvelous, full of lyricism and humorous spark, virtuosity and inspiration. The rhythm section provides solid and sympathetic support at all times, and overall this is one of my favorite piano trio recordings ever. Garrick manages to concentrate his enormous abilities as a player and composer on this album, which was recorded at a peak of his 1970s activity (the album Home Stretch BluesFind albums with this title was recorded at the same session). There is nothing more that needs to be said here except that if you don’t own this album, you have a huge gap in your musical education. Essential!

MICHAEL GARRICK ~ POETRY AND JAZZ IN CONCERT
VOCALION 8416 (Barcode: 765387841621) ~ UK ~ Jazz & Poetry

Recorded: 1964 - 1966 Released: 2006

The love affair between the two Art Forms: Jazz music & Poetry, goes back to the late 1950s, when American writers / poets of the Beat Generation (Jack KerouacFind albums by this artist, Allen GinsbergFind albums by this artist and others) discovered the “intellectual proximity” between their writing and the process of creating Jazz music, as represented by the founding Fathers of Bee Bop (Charlie ParkerFind albums by this artist, Dizzy GillespieFind albums by this artist and others). However, although the poets were frequent patrons of the burgeoning NY Jazz club scene, actual poetry readings combined with Jazz performances were pretty rare and sporadic.

Only when the Jazz & Poetry concept crossed over the Atlantic to Britain (and later the rest of Europe) the movement reached a full swing and enjoyed immense popularity with the poets, musicians and the audiences. The intellectual crowds in London and the rest of Britain attended Jazz & Poetry concerts in huge numbers through the early and mid-1960s, but towards the end of the decade the enthusiasm diminished.

British poet Jeremy RobsonFind albums by this artist and pianist / composer Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist were largely responsible for the movement’s popularity. Garrick, a graduate in English Literature, had a great sensitivity to the literary works and managed to compose music, which suited the words perfectly. This album, released originally in 1964 as two separate LPs (Vol.1 & 2) documents a typical Jazz & Poetry concert. Recorded “live” in a studio, the applause and the audience’s reaction to the poetry faithfully reproduce the atmosphere of a performance hall.

The Jazz quintet (Garrick – piano, Joe HarriottFind albums by this artist – sax, Shake KeaneFind albums by this artist – trumpet, John TaylorFind albums by this artist – bass and Colin BarnesFind albums by this artist – drums) provides the music and four poets (Adrian MitchellFind albums by this artist, Dannie AbseFind albums by this artist, Jeremy Robson and Laurie LeeFind albums by this artist) read their poems, creating a wonderfully intellectual encounter, where the sum of the two Arts is actually better than their individual contribution. This new addition adds an ultra-rare EP of Jazz & Poetry recorded a couple of years later, featuring the Michael Garrick quintet (with Ian CarrFind albums by this artist – trumpet and Coleridge GoodeFind albums by this artist – bass replacing their respective counterparts in the earlier quintet) and Jeremy Robson, called Before Night/DayFind albums with this title. This is a timeless masterpiece and an everlasting food for sensitive souls – brilliant!

This album is a splendid example of early Jazz-Rock, with strong Rhythm And Blues influences. Almond plays tenor, alto and baritone saxophones, flute, alto flute, organ, vibes, mellotron and bass clarinet – surely deserving the “music machine” nickname. His virtuosity (my favorite being his flute playing) is obvious. He also composed all but one of the eight tunes included here. Overall this is an excellent album and a great trip down the memory lane. Wholeheartedly recommended!

JOHN SURMAN / ALAN SKIDMORE / TONY OXLEY ~ JAZZ IN BRITAIN `68-`69
VOCALION 8418 (Barcode: 765387841829) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1968 - 1969 Released: 2006

Saxophonists John SurmanFind albums by this artist and Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist and drummer Tony OxleyFind albums by this artist are three of the most distinguished representatives of the burgeoning British Jazz scene in the late 1960s and 1970s. Each of them has a most impressive recorded legacy from that period and of course in the years to follow. This album, initially released in 1972, collects five stunning and previously unreleased outtakes, recorded at several sessions involving these three musicians, most of which originate from the sessions for Skidmore’s debut album. Each and every one of these tracks is absolutely superb, and considering the fact these are outtakes, this is ample evidence of the unbelievably high standard of the music at the time. The first track presents the unaccompanied saxophone trio comprising of Alan Skidmore (tenor), Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist (alto) and John Surman (baritone), which would later become known as S.O.S.Find albums by this artist and record albums under that name. On the next track the lineup is expanded to an octet with the addition of Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist (flugelhorn), Malcolm GriffithFind albums by this artist (trombone), John TaylorFind albums by this artist (piano), Harry MillerFind albums by this artist (bass) and Alan JacksonFind albums by this artist (drums). The third track is actually recorded in two parts, with a personnel change between the two parts: part one is a quartet (Surman, Taylor, Miller & Jackson), that features a rare appearance of Surman on piano, and part two a quintet (Skidmore, Wheeler, Taylor, Miller & Oxley) introducing Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist (trumpet) and Tony Oxley (drums). The remaining two tracks are recorded by the same quintet. Surman composed three of the pieces and his fellow saxophonist John WarrenFind albums by this artist composed another one. The music is absolutely divine from start to finish in every respect – the compositions, the solos and the interplay are all breathtaking. My personal favorite is the incredible work by Oxley, by far one of the most innovative and inventive drummers in Jazz. Oxley’s approach at the time is somewhat similar to the incredible work done by the young Tony WilliamsFind albums by this artist, when he joined the Miles DavisFind albums by this artist quintet. Overall this is one the finest examples of British Jazz ever recorded and an absolutely essential document of the era.

TERRY CAVENDISH / ORCHESTRA ~ ALL IN AN AFTERNOON`S WORK
VOCALION 8419 (Barcode: 765387841928) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1972 - 1974 Released: 2006

The funny part of the story behind this album is the fact that there never was a Terry CavendishFind albums by this artist. The name is a completely fictitious. So where does it come from? Well, Cavendish was a name of a British “music library” – a company specializing in recording music, which was later licensed to radio, TV and film produces to serve as background / incidental music. The actual “brain” behind the music on this album is trumpeter / composer / arranger Ray DaviesFind albums by this artist. Davies was strongly influenced by Jazz and Funk at the time and the album is a beautiful example of Big Band / Orchestral music, spiced with a funky rhythm section, creating a superb blend of skillfully arranged and beautifully performed instrumental music, which is quite unique even today. Davies used the top session musicians in his band, really the cream of the crop, and a fantastic rhythm section, which drives this at all times and makes it go where normal Big Band music rarely goes. This is the true 1970s sound, which completely disappeared from the face of the earth later on. The bonus material is taken from other Cavendish recordings and was also composed / arranged by Ray Davies. People who love the powerful sound of a Big Band / Orchestra and Funk will have a field day with this.

AMANCIO D`SILVA ~ KONKAN DANCE

Recorded: 1974 Released: 2006

Guitarist / composer Amancio D`SilvaFind albums by this artist was born in Goa, India and arrived in London in 1967, where he was immediately absorbed by the burgeoning local Jazz scene. Similarly to many other musicians, who arrived in the ex-Empire’s Capital from the colonial countries (but mostly from India), D`Silva was already “armed” with a vast musical tradition of his native county. The liberal cultural atmosphere of the London scene and the openness to other cultural influences where a major factor in creating a cultural amalgam between the Western Jazz tradition and the Eastern musical treasures. Several players practiced the new Jazz-World Fusion direction, like the John MayerFind albums by this artist / Joe HarriottFind albums by this artist ensemble with the revolutionary Indo-Jazz FusionsFind albums with this title recordings. Although D`Silva participated in a wide variety of sessions, his unique guitar voice always included a subtle Eastern undertone. However, on his solo recording projects, where his own compositions were mainly featured, this influence was much more apparent. He recorded five brilliant solo albums, of which this was the last. For some strange reason the last album was never released at the time and this is the first time this great music can be heard, which of course is a reason to celebrate, as anything recorded by this brilliant musician is an important heritage and a document of the era. The musicians participating in this recording come from the ranks of legendary British Jazz scene: Don RendellFind albums by this artist – saxophone, Stan TraceyFind albums by this artist – piano and Alan BranscombeFind albums by this artist – flute, vibes and electric piano. A sitar and two tabla players add the Indian flavor to the music, which flows beautifully like a river of sound in an enchanted garden. Absolute must!

MAYNARD FERGUSON ~ M. F. HORN 2 / THE BALLAD STYLE OF MAYNARD FERGUSON
VOCALION 8421 (Barcode: 765387842123) ~ CANADA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1969 - 1972 Released: 2006

Canadian Jazz trumpeter / bandleader Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist arrived in UK in late 1968, where Jazz was accepted as a legitimate Art Form and highly appreciated. European audiences were more receptive to new sounds and musical experimentation, be it Free Jazz or Jazz-Rock Fusion, and therefore an ideal refuge for many frustrated American musicians. Ferguson resided in UK between 1968 and 1973, where he was warmly received and his talent promptly recognized. He recorded five albums in UK for the CBSFind albums on this label label, which are considered the pinnacle of his recorded legacy.

This album combines two of these albums, the last and the first of his UK recordings. In spite of the differences between the two albums they both showcase Ferguson’s amazing abilities as an instrumentalist. His famous high-pitched cadenzas and screaming, soaring finales are of course legendary.

"M. F. Horn 2Find albums with this title" is an excellent Jazz-Rock Fusion album, similar to the work of American bands like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist and ChaseFind albums by this artist or British bands like IfFind albums by this artist, but rather than leading a combo, Ferguson is riding the powerful locomotive of a full-fledged big band / brass orchestra, which of course makes a huge difference to the overall sound. Conducted by Keith MansfieldFind albums by this artist, a brilliant arranger and producer, the band comprised of the absolute best British Jazz horn players at the time and sounds like a million dollars. The clever and sophisticated arrangements suit Ferguson’s abilities perfectly and the album is an absolute blast from start to finish.

"The Ballad Style Of Maynard FergusonFind albums with this title" is a complete contrast, showcasing the trumpeter’s solos against a lushly playing orchestra, directed again by Keith Mansfield, who also arranged the music. Some Jazz fans might shrug at this music, considering it almost a Pop effort, but honestly anybody who can appreciate great trumpet performance and a superb orchestra supporting the soloist will find this certainly worth their while. Great stuff!

Two great vocal albums by US singer Salena JonesFind albums by this artist, born at the same small town as Ella FitzgeraldFind albums by this artist, who came to prominence after she arrived in the UK and captured the British audiences with her warm, sensuous voice and great ability to interpret Jazz material. In Britain Jones recorded her first two albums, released on the CBSFind albums on this label label, both of which are presented here. Both albums were orchestrated and arranged by arranger / conductor Keith MansfieldFind albums by this artist, who was a superb master of his trade and whose orchestra included the best British studio and Jazz players at the time. The music covers a selection of popular vocal Jazz standards and other contemporary material, all beautifully performed with great feeling and masterly approach. The orchestral arrangements are absolutely stunning and full of superb short instrumental solos. The albums lost nothing of their charm over the years. Recommended to vocal Jazz enthusiasts.

NICK INGMAN ~ TERMINATOR

Recorded: 1976 Released: 2006

Keyboardist / composer / arranger Nick IngmanFind albums by this artist was one of the most important arrangers on the UK music market in the 1970s. As part of the Production Company run by ex-EMIFind albums on this label stuff producers George MartinFind albums by this artist and Norrie ParamorFind albums by this artist, he arranged albums for some of Britain’s most famous Pop and Rock stars. In parallel he released albums with his own compositions, which had a strong Jazz influence. Ingman studied with bassist / composer Graham CollierFind albums by this artist, who deeply influenced his approach to music, as well as at the Berklee School of Music in Boston. This is the last of the seven solo albums Ingman recorded and is the most Jazz influenced of them all. It’s a masterpiece of arrangement, which employs a large Big Band / Orchestra and a group of first rate session musicians and Jazz soloist. Ingman composed six of the eleven tracks on this album. Beautifully recorded and performed, this is a prime example of instrumental music, which is extremely difficult to categorize. The closest I can come up with is orchestral Jazz-Rock Fusion. Great stuff!

CRITICS GROUP ~ SWEET THAMES FLOW SOFTLY
VOCALION 8424 (Barcode: 765387842420) ~ UK ~ World Music & Folklore

Recorded: 1967 Released: 2006

The folk music revival, which swept the US and Britain in the early 1960s, resulted in the new generation of musicians rediscovering the riches of musical tradition created over centuries passed. As opposed to Classical music, folklore was created outside of the musical "establishment" over the centuries, mostly by troubadours and non-professional authors, which of course doesn´t make that this music is in any way inferior to the Classical heritage, it is simply different. Before Folk turned into Folk-Rock by the mid-1960s, hordes of musicians sang traditional material and created new songs in the spirit of the Folk tradition. This album documents the work of the British ensemble The Critics GroupFind albums by this artist, which was quite well known at the time. This album, which collects folk songs from the streets of London, from Elizabethan times to present, is a beautiful example of how the folk tradition can be preserved and cherished. The group members are all excellent singers with splendid voices. The songs are mostly performed a cappella, as they were sung originally, but some have instrumental accompaniment. Overall this is a charming album, aimed at listeners who like traditional folklore.

MICHAEL GARRICK ~ HOME STRETCH BLUES
VOCALION 8426 (Barcode: 765387842628) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1972 Released: 2006

Pianist / composer Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist has been an icon of British Jazz for the last five decades. His exquisite touch on the keyboards, deep lyricism and unparalleled inventiveness as a composer characterize his entire legacy over time, which has very little rivalry or precedence. This album presents Garrick with his sextet (Garrick – piano and harpsichord, Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist – trumpet, Art ThemenFind albums by this artist – clarinet and sax, Dave GreenFind albums by this artist – bass, Trevor TomkinsFind albums by this artist – drums and Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist – vocals) with Don RendellFind albums by this artist – sax on couple of tracks. The music, written as always by Garrick, is divided (by side A and side B of the original album) into two parts: part one includes three great tracks, including a song based on a poem by Alfred TennysonFind albums by this artist and part two is a five-piece suite inspired by a poem by John SmithFind albums by this artist. As usual the music is simple superb, as are the performances by the band members. Norma’s vocalese reaches an absolute peak here and her integration into the group’s overall sound is perfect. This is just about the most perfect example of the British Jazz at the time of its full maturity and a timeless masterpiece. It is a shame this music was unavailable for so long and it makes me really happy to know it can be rediscovered by a new generation of music lovers. A must!

NEW JAZZ ORCHESTRA ~ WESTERN REUNION LONDON 1965
VOCALION 8427 (Barcode: 765387842727) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1965 Released: 2006

The New Jazz OrchestraFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. NJOFind albums by this artist) was a big band directed by bandleader / arranger / composer Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist and consisted of the best up-coming Jazz players on the British scene at the time: Ian CarrFind albums by this artist – trumpet, Paul RutherfordFind albums by this artist – trombone, Trevor WattsFind albums by this artist – sax, Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist – sax, Tony ReevesFind albums by this artist – bass, Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist – drums and many more.

Ardley ran the orchestra with an “iron fist” and in time turned it into a perfectly well oiled ensemble, which was able to perform even the trickiest arrangements with a breeze. His outstanding arrangements of classic Jazz pieces are all masterpieces of rare beauty and sophistication and he manages to get out of the band so much more that an average US big band playing similar material. Of course the soloist, who are all quite outstanding, add another dimension to the overall sound, which is truly heavenly.

This is the first album by NJO and includes mostly standards by American (Miles DavisFind albums by this artist, John LewisFind albums by this artist) and British composers, but one of Ardley’s compositions is also included. Ardley, who was an admirer of Gil EvansFind albums by this artist, developed a distinctive orchestral (rather than traditional big band) sound with NJO, using the various sections of the band to complement each other’s sound and tonality.

The overall effect is absolutely stunning and this is one of my all time favorite big band albums. This is essential listening to all big band fans and recommended to all Jazz listeners out there. A true gem!

2nd solo release by saxophonist / composer John SurmanFind albums by this artist and one of the most pivotal recordings of the era, which defines modern British Jazz. If Surman was still searching for a clear direction on his debut album, recorded just a year earlier, he surely found it here. This is phenomenal music, from start to finish. The basis of the group that recorded this album is Surman’s quartet with Surman on baritone and soprano sax and bass clarinet, John TaylorFind albums by this artist on piano, Barre PhillipsFind albums by this artist on bass and Tony OxleyFind albums by this artist on drums. MAYNARD FERGUSON ~ M. F. HORN 3 / M. F. HORN 4 & 5 - LIVE AT JIMMY`S
VOCALION 8429 (Barcode: 765387842925) ~ CANADA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1973 Released: 2006

Following an almost five years long exile in the UK, trumpeter / bandleader Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist returned to the US in 1973. His new producer for ColumbiaFind albums on this label was no other than Teo MaceroFind albums by this artist, famous for his long association with Miles DavisFind albums by this artist.

The album "M. F. Horn 3Find albums with this title" was still recorded mostly in UK and featured the same incredible big band that played with Ferguson on "M. f. HornFind albums with this title" and "M. F. Horn 2Find albums with this title" and only the finishing touches were done in NY. Stylistically the album is also quite similar to its predecessor, presenting powerful version of Jazz-Rock Fusion with brass, brilliantly arranged and splendidly executed.

The next album, a double recorded live in NY, was to be his ultimate recording. Fronting a great big band, which included several European players who played on his previous albums, as well as new American players, Ferguson plays brilliantly, pushing the band to unbelievable heights. The material selected for the recording is more mainstream Jazz than the distinctive Jazz-Rock Fusion predecessors, but the high energy and dominant rhythm section create a special blend, which is quite different from traditional American big band music.

This was Ferguson’s finest hour and his future attempts to capture wider audiences by performing covers of popular hits were sadly less memorable. This stuff is it – sheer genius at work and a must for any big band enthusiast.

Recorded: 1976 Released: 2007

The short-lived Jazz-Rock Fusion group MirageFind albums by this artist is an excellent example of the incredible high level of music created in Britain in the 1970s. Co-led by two great instrumentalist and composers: saxophonist George KhanFind albums by this artist and guitarist Brian GoddingFind albums by this artist, they managed to record just one album, which was originally released on the obscure, but visionary Norwegian CompendiumFind albums on this label label (along with some other superb albums), which unfortunately folded shortly after this album was released. The group also included bassist Steve CookFind albums by this artist and drummer Dave SheenFind albums by this artist on permanent basis, but was often expanded to a sextet with the addition of Geoff CastleFind albums by this artist on keyboards and John MitchellFind albums by this artist on percussion. The group played music composed by Khan and Godding, which was a typical British Fusion, somewhat similar to what the many Canterbury groups (Hatfield And The NorthFind albums by this artist, National HealthFind albums by this artist) were doing at the time, with strong melodic lines and lengthy improvisations. Godding was of course one of the best British guitarists, sadly much under-appreciated and respected mostly among his peers. This most welcome reissue expands the original album by adding two long jam-like tracks recorded live, which give an excellent glimpse as to how the group (in its sextet form) sounded on stage. Brilliant stuff, from start to finish and a must to all Fusion-heads.

BONNIE DOBSON ~ BONNIE DOBSON
VOCALION 8432 (Barcode: 765387843229) ~ CANADA ~ Folk-Rock

Canadian singer / songwriter Bonnie DobsonFind albums by this artist was part of the Folk revival that swept Northern America and Europe in the late 1950s and early 1960s, before the music got electric and became Folk-Rock. She preformed and recorded several albums in the US during the 1960s and by the end of that decade she moved to UK, where this album was recorded and released on the prestigious ArgoFind albums on this label label. It is probably her best recording ever, presenting her in the full glory of her talent. Her crystal clear voice and perfect pitch knew very few parallels and were often compared to the voice of Joan BaezFind albums by this artist. Bonnie sung in English and French with perfect ease and her choice of material was always exceptional. Unfortunately this was one of her last recordings, as she opted to leave the music business altogether in view of the Folk music being changed and commercialized. MICHAEL GARRICK ~ MR SMITH`S APOCALYPSE
VOCALION 8433 (Barcode: 765387843328) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Pianist / composer Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist has been an icon of British Jazz for the last five decades. His exquisite touch on the keyboards, deep lyricism and unparalleled inventiveness as a composer characterize his entire legacy over time, which has very little rivalry or precedence. This album presents Garrick realizing a most ambitious work, which combines the elements he was always interested in: Jazz, poetry and liturgical music. It is an expansion of the idea of his earlier album PraisesFind albums with this title and presents a full cantata for Jazz sextet (Garrick – organ, Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist – trumpet, Don RendellFind albums by this artist – flute, clarinet and sax, Art ThemenFind albums by this artist – flute, clarinet and sax, Coleridge GoodeFind albums by this artist – bass, Trevor TomkinsFind albums by this artist – drums), four soloists (including Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist and the poet John SmithFind albums by this artist, who wrote the poems which serve as the libretto) and a large children’s choir. The entire ensemble was called Garrick`s FairgroundFind albums by this artist for the sake of the album. The music is majestic, as expected for the occasion, but not without humorous moments, typical of Garrick’s intelligent twists and turns. It might sound a bit odd to a typical Jazz listener, but anybody loving good music should enjoy this tremendously. This reissue adds to the original album the ultra-rare single, which was released at the time to promote the album. Overall a rare and pioneering work, ages ahead of its time and one reflecting the scope of Garrick’s talent and musical contribution. A must!

Downes composed all the music and played mostly various flutes, although he was equally fluent playing the alto saxophone. The music is excellent and truly visionary for the time of the recording. The level of interplay between the trio members is exceptional and the virtuosity of the players is exemplary and the album lost none of its vigor and charm over the years. A great example of early British Free Jazz at its best, suitable for most Jazz listeners, as although highly improvisational, the natural flow of the music makes it easily acceptable to most people. The music on this album was used several times as a part of dance show, with the trio performing live and accompanying the dancers. Free Jazz listeners should definitely try this gem.

Recorded: 1968 Released: 2007

British singer / actor Elaine DelmarFind albums by this artist is a prominent figure on the local entertainment scene, with several decades of activity on stage, cinema and recording studio. Delmar started her career as a Jazz singer in the mid 1960s, recording several albums for Denis PrestonFind albums by this artist, and then signed with the CBSFind albums on this label label, on which she released just the one album, now reissued on VocalionFind albums on this label. As opposed to her early strictly Jazz recordings, on this album Delmar presents repertoire drawn from the cinema and stage as well as contemporary songbook. Of course her Jazz inclinations are still very much audible, as are her natural charm and talent. The music is superbly arranged and the orchestral accompaniment perfectly executed, with that marvelous 1960s sound. In many respects this album is a perfect example of vocal albums made in Britain in the late 1960s / early 1970s, where arrangers and orchestra conductors were an integral part of the final result and the overall result full of brilliant details, both vocal and instrumental. They don´t make music like that any more, that´s for sure. This is a most pleasant trip don the memory lane, which lost nothing of its charm over time.

Recorded: 1965 Released: 2008

On the front line Almond was paired with one of three saxophone players: Hadley CalimanFind albums by this artist, Curtis AmyFind albums by this artist and Vi ReddFind albums by this artist. He plays several instruments (as usual) – tenor and alto saxophone, flutes, organ and vibraphone. Almond wrote most of the music on the album, with just a couple of standards used. The result is a delightful, funky, soulful session with excellent music and some remarkable solos. Almond’s playing bears a distinctive European approach, which when consolidated with the American natural bluesy sound fits just perfectly. The album is much more jazzy that the debut and perhaps less adventurous, but nevertheless and excellent document of the fine music that was happening at the time and cross-pollination of musical ideas. Most warmly recommended!

I think this deserves an "essential" label - certainly an essential part of the soundtrack to my musical and general development; first a pirated reel-to-reel copy back in the early 70s; then eventually a second hand LP when I found one; and now the CD for easy access and road-trip enhancement.

VOCALION 8444 (Barcode: 765387844424) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1973 Released: 2009

Pianist / composer Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist has been a pivotal figure in the British Jazz for over five decades and his recorded legacy over the years is an enormous source of inspiration and an example of intelligence, finesse and dedication. By the mid-1970s the British Jazz revolution was all but complete and the scene´s decade of glory was also nearing its end, with record sales declining. Therefore this album was to be the last recording Garrick made for the ArgoFind albums on this label label, a subsidiary of DeccaFind albums on this label. His ambition to push the music beyond the well established boundaries, with the music becoming more complex in the process, was a key factor in the company´s decision to cease the fruitful cooperation, which lasted for a decade and produced some of Britain´s best and most important Jazz masterpieces. Following the initial release of this album Garrick would almost completely stop releasing albums for over two decades, until he finally established his own independent Jazz AcademyFind albums on this label label and his output appeared there regularly since, to the delight of his many fans, myself included. British singer Annie RossFind albums by this artist has spent many years in the USA, where she came to fame as one of the most important and innovative Jazz vocalists and is mostly known for her part in the vocal trio Lambert, Hendricks & RossFind albums by this artist, which revolutionized the group vocal approach in Jazz. Upon her return to the UK, Ross continued to record, perform and even acted in the movies. This album is a document of her one-women show at the Hampstead Theatre, where she performed a vide range of Jazz, Bossa Nova and even Progressive Rock (yes! She sings a King CrimsonFind albums by this artist song as well) material, accompanied by a wonderful band, which included keyboardist Dave MacRaeFind albums by this artist (another Prog connection, as we was at the time a member of Matching MoleFind albums by this artist), guitarist Gordon EdwardsFind albums by this artist, bassist Rick LairdFind albums by this artist (Mahavishnu OrchestraFind albums by this artist) and drummer Dave MontgomeryFind albums by this artist. This was 1971 and anything was possible! Of course this recording is very different from what most Annie Ross fans would expect to hear from her, and therefore quite special in every way. I have no idea how many people are even aware of this rare album, but surely many will be interested to check it out!

VOCALION 8460 (Barcode: 765387846022) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1973 - 1975 Released: 2010

British Funk-Jazz outfit Olympic RunnersFind albums by this artist were active on the local scene during the 1970s, releasing a series of albums which gained relatively little attention in spite of their classy content. The group was initially an instrumental quartet and included keyboardist Pete WingfieldFind albums by this artist, American guitarist Joe JammerFind albums by this artist, bassist Delisle HarperFind albums by this artist and drummer Glen LeFleurFind albums by this artist. Under the wings of veteran producer Mike VernonFind albums by this artist (who plays occasional percussion on the second album) they managed to gain some attention in the US later on. This album includes the first two releases recorded by the group, which includes some great funky grooves somewhat similar to Herbie Hancock´s Headhunters. Since Funk is Funk, the material remains relevant today and still induces some involuntary backside movement. Watch out!

MARTIN DREW / TONY LEE ~ MARTIN DREW BAND / STREETS OF DREAMS
VOCALION 8462 (Barcode: 765387846220) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1977 - 1979 Released: 2009

By the late 1970s the fantastic British Jazz scene, which thrived during the previous two decades producing some of the most revolutionary music ever and breaking many barriers of conceptual approach to Jazz, was unfortunately suffering badly. Many different factors contributed to this phenomenon: musical, social, economic and so on, but the situation "on the ground" was getting pretty desperate, with major record labels almost completely banning Jazz material from their repertoire of new releases, contrary to their traditional support of Jazz music. This new development opened a new opportunity for small independent British labels to step in and provide a platform, which would enable British Jazz musicians to record and release their music. One of such labels was the tiny, but excellent Lee LambertFind albums on this label label and this album is a long overdue reissue of two of the albums original released by that label in the late 1970s. Drummer Martin DrewFind albums by this artist presents an album recorded by his quintet / sextet with superb musicians: saxophonist Brian SmithFind albums by this artist, vibraphonist Bill Le SageFind albums by this artist, pianist John TaylorFind albums by this artist, bassist Ron MathewsonFind albums by this artist and percussionist Chris FletcherFind albums by this artist. Pianist Tony LeeFind albums by this artist presents an album recorded by his quartet with bassist Tony ArcherFind albums by this artist, drummer Martin Drew and congas player Tony UterFind albums by this artist. Both albums are full of excellent musicianship and great ideas. The music includes mostly Jazz standards but there´s nothing standard about the way they are performed here. Both albums are excellent examples of how mainstream Jazz can be of high quality and completely devoid of boredom. Highly recommended!

Legendary British saxophonist / composer / arranger / bandleader John DankworthFind albums by this artist was one of the Godfathers of modern British Jazz. Although his career started in mid-1940s he was keen to pursue the sounds of Bee Bop, when those crossed the Atlantic and later pioneered the modern British Big Band sound. In parallel to his Jazz career, Dankworth was active as composer of music for film and TV. This album focuses around these scores and presents them in Jazz arrangements, performed by a dreamy Big Band, which includes the crème de la crème of British Jazz at the time: saxophonist Don RendellFind albums by this artist, trombonist Malcolm GriffithsFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Kenny BakerFind albums by this artist, pianist Tony HymasFind albums by this artist and many others. The music is excellent of course, as is the performance. British Jazz fans will find this stuff delightful, and Big Band enthusiasts will have a field day with this. British pianist / composer John CameronFind albums by this artist was one of the great mavericks on the local Jazz scene in the 1960s, when he was still performing himself. Later on Cameron concentrated on his work as a composer, arranger, bandleader contributing numerous film soundtracks, musicals, etc. This reissue brings to life two rare 1960s albums. VOCALION 8479 (Barcode: 765387847920) ~ UK ~ Jazz

This exquisite reissue brings to life two extremely rare mid-1960s quartet recordings by the great British saxophonist Dick MorrisseyFind albums by this artist, one of the great representatives of the British Jazz scene at its peak in the 1960s / 1970s. Earning respect and admiration as a Hard Bop player (as documented on these two albums) Morrissey later formed the fantastic early Jazz-Rock ensemble IfFind albums by this artist and after it disbanded he formed the Morrissey-Mullen BandFind albums by this artist (with guitarist Jim MullenFind albums by this artist), which lasted for almost two decades as one of the best and most stable British bands. Sadly Morrissey died in 2000, losing his battle with cancer. A brilliant player with enormous sensitivity and beautiful tone, Morrissey remains a symbol of the times, when music sounded better and girls looked prettier (to old farts like myself of course). This album is sweet and mellow, with superb performance by pianist Harry SouthFind albums by this artist, who also contributed several original compositions, bassist Phil BatesFind albums by this artist and drummers Bill EydenFind albums by this artist (first album) and the legend Phil SeamenFind albums by this artist (second album). Disregarding the element of nostalgia, this is a damn great Jazz album, which swings like mad and makes life worth living. The recording quality (and the superb remastering by Michael J. This is the 2nd album by British saxophonist / composer Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist, one the pillars of modern British Jazz, who was a prominent figure on the late 1960s / 1970s Jazz scene, contributing some of the greatest moments of that illustrious era. Skidmore´s input over the years is absolutely invaluable and fortunately he is one of the musicians from that period, who still plays today, as brilliantly as always. The album also captures Skidmore´s 2nd quintet, with trombonist Malcolm GriffithsFind albums by this artist, pianist John TaylorFind albums by this artist (the only common link with the 1st quintet), bassist Chris LaurenceFind albums by this artist and drummer Tony LevinFind albums by this artist. On four of the seven tracks of this album the quintet is expanded into a septet with the addition of two superb saxophonists: Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist and John SurmanFind albums by this artist. Of the seven compositions Skidmore contributed only one, two are by Surman, two others are by the great John WarrenFind albums by this artist, another one is by Osborne and the last one is by Taylor. JOE HARRIOTT ~ MOVEMENT / HIGH SPIRITS
VOCALION 8486 (Barcode: 765387848620) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1963 - 1964 Released: 2012

It´s always a great pleasure to see reissues of legendary albums, which have been unavailable for years, suddenly appear on the market out of the blue, making a dream come true for music lovers, who anxiously hoped for them to be finally available on CD, rather than mortgaging their homes in order to get an insanely expensive fifty years old vinyl. This is certainly true as far as these two albums by the British Jazz saxophonist Joe HarriottFind albums by this artist are concerned.

Harriott, born in Jamaica, was one of several West Indian musicians, who arrived on the British scene, like trumpeter Shake KeaneFind albums by this artist, who became his close musical partner and plays on these two albums as well. By the early 1960s Harriott emerged as the most advanced pioneer of the new Jazz explorations, including Free Jazz, one of the first British musicians to embrace the concept of Free Form spontaneity in composition and performance. His absolutely incredible virtuosity as a player allowed him to achieve results unparalleled by any of his peers on the British scene at the time. His quintet included also pianist Pat SmytheFind albums by this artist, bassist Coleridge GoodeFind albums by this artist and drummer Bobby OrrFind albums by this artist, some of the finest British Jazz players at the time. Four members of this quintet (excluding Smythe of course) were also members of the various ensembles led by pianist / composer Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist at the same time.

"MovementFind albums with this title", the first of the two albums included here, is a natural follow up to the two albums recorded earlier by Harriott: "Free FormFind albums with this title" and "AbstractFind albums with this title", which were full fledged Free Jazz releases. It includes nine original compositions, seven by Harriott and two by Garrick, which range stylistically between modern mainstream pieces and Free Form pieces, a rather unusual approach. The Free Form pieces are perhaps the most advanced Harriott´s excursions in that direction, but their overall impact of somewhat softened by the more conventional pieces present here. Nevertheless this is a brilliant piece of modern Jazz and an absolute milestone recording of the modern British Jazz legacy of that period.

"High SpiritsFind albums with this title" is quite a surprise as it is completely "conventional", with the quintet playing modern Jazz arrangements of the themes composed for the musical show of the same name, which was being staged In UK and USA at the time. Here the listener gets the opportunity to hear Harriott, Keane and Smythe playing perfect solos, showing their respective talents. The overall performance is simply perfect in every possible meaning of the word, clearly showing that by that time European musicians could play Jazz as well as their American contemporaries, if not better.

Considering the fact that Harriott´s recorded legacy is relatively limited, this new edition is simply a godsend. Beautifully remastered by Michael J. DuttonFind albums by this artist this reissue offers for the first time ever the stereo mixes of these two albums, never previously released, which is one more reason to grab them immediately without hesitation. Pure musical gold!

HAROLD MCNAIR ~ HAROLD MCNAIR / FLUTE & NUT
VOCALION 8494 (Barcode: 765387849429) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1968 - 1969 Released: 2012

This is a criminally overdue reissue of the two albums recorded by the British Jazz flautist / saxophonist / composer Harold McNairFind albums by this artist for the RCAFind albums by this artist label, which have been unavailable for over forty years now. McNair, born in Jamaica, was one of many brilliant West Indian musicians to arrive on the British scene in the 1950s and 1960, greatly contributing to the creation of the modern British Jazz, which was at its peak when these two albums were recorded. Although McNair played the saxophone superbly, his flute playing was absolutely amazing and extraordinary, making him probably the best ever British Jazz flautist. He died from cancer in 1971 at a ridiculous young age of thirty nine, a tremendous loss of an amazing talent, lamented to this very day by those who knew him and his work. His rather limited recorded legacy is now radically expanded with the reissue of these two albums.

The eponymous album was recorded by the Harold McNair quartet, with pianist Bill Le SageFind albums by this artist, bassist Spike HeatleyFind albums by this artist and drummer Tony CarrFind albums by this artist. They perform nine pieces, five of which are originals composed by McNair, three are standards and one is a song written by the Folk-Rock singer / songwriter DonovanFind albums by this artist. McNair was a regular member of Donovan´s band, where he played alongside the pianist / composer / arranger John CameronFind albums by this artist. McNair´s performances on this album are perfect from start to finish. He uses the flute on most of the tracks and his immediately recognizable style is simply overwhelming.

The "Flute & NutFind albums with this title" album features McNair accompanied by a Jazz Orchestra conducted by John Cameron, performing eight pieces orchestrated and arranged by Cameron, three of which are McNair originals, one a Cameron original and the remaining four are standards. In retrospect this is the best album McNair ever recorded, with his flute (and occasional saxophone) sounding absolutely marvelous and the beautiful arrangements adding a spectacular effect to the entire production.

McNair recorded only one more album as a leader after this, called "The FenceFind albums with this title", before he died, which was released on the B&CFind albums on this label label. Parts of the first album included here were released posthumously by the same label as another eponymous album, and included also live material recorded at the Ronnie ScottFind albums by this artist´s club.

Beautifully remastered by Michael J. DuttonFind albums by this artist, these two albums sound fresh and wonderful, as if recorded only a short while ago. Musically they are some of the best Jazz flute music even captured and are an essential piece of the modern British Jazz legacy. Absolutely brilliant stuff!

The original album was produced by the celebrated producer Denis PrestonFind albums by this artist and was recorded at the legendary Lansdowne Studios. This reissue was remastered by Michael J. DuttonFind albums by this artist and the sound quality and clarity are simply stunning. The liner notes include a reprint of the original liner notes printed on the album´s sleeve and a retrospective essay by Stephano D`SilvaFind albums by this artist, Amancio´s son.

Of the many British Jazz albums released by the end of the 1960s, this one is surely one of the most significant and prophetic in so many ways. The exploding British Jazz scene went through a rapid revolutionary movement towards independence from the American Jazz legacy, spearheading the birth of European Jazz, which would become the next evolutionary step for the Jazz Art Form. There are many reasons why Britain proved to be the most fertile ground for this quantum leap, but one of the most significant of these reasons was certainly the fact that Britain (and London in particular) became a natural harbor for immigrants arriving from all corners of the former Empire, making it the first, as we now call it, multiculti environments, amalgamating cultural influences originating from many different locations around the globe. Music, of course, would be one of the most profoundly influenced element of the British culture, to be touched by the influx of those sounds and rhythms and by the end of the 1960s World Music was alive and kicking in Britain, long before the actual term was coined.

Joe Harriott, born in Jamaica and Amancio D`Silva, born in India, were just two of many prominent British Jazz musicians, who were integrated into the local scene upon their arrival in Britain and naturally put in their own cultural heritage into the amalgam, which eventually emerged as modern British Jazz. This album is a splendid example of early Jazz-World Fusion, but certainly not the first of its kind. Harriott recorded a series of brilliant and revolutionary albums with another Indian immigrant, John Mayer, in the years preceding this recording. D`Silva recorded his debut album a few months earlier, which displayed similar World-Music influences. There were many other examples telling a similar story of integration and mutual inspiration.

Harriott, who is primarily hailed as one of Free Jazz pioneers / inventors displays the gentler side of his musical personality on this album. His solos are of course much more developed and free-spirited than those performed by conventional Jazz players, but he stays well within the melodic and harmonic boundaries outlined by D`Silva´s compositions. The brief standard, which features Harriott in a duet with Spring, is the only reference to Harriott´s free style abilities.

D`Silva showcases his highly individual style as a guitarist, which is clearly influenced by a plethora of Indian music characteristics. His compositions, which are all exceptionally beautiful, exemplify a perfect marriage between European lyricism and harmony and Indian spirituality and rhythmic trance. This will be also heard on his later recordings, all of which are classics in their own right.

Green, one of British Jazz most prolific and respected bassists, contributes his strong and steady pulsations, which keep the music well anchored and balanced. Spring, a brilliant and original player, performs some true drum magic on this album, which is both intelligent and inspired, especially in view of the rhythmic challenges and odd tempi he needs to deal with. Winstone, the absolute Diva of British Jazz, adds some lovely wordless vocals, which complete the compositions with a veil of mystery and sensuality. She participates on three of the tracks and her contribution is simply invaluable. The great Carr, who plays on just a couple of tracks, adds his superb solos, which are like gleaming jewels; something that happens every time he blows his flugelhorn.

All in all this is a most welcome reissue of a monumental milestone in the British Jazz history, which should be a part of every serious record collection owned by people who truly love Jazz. Hopefully VocalionFind albums on this label will release all the other albums recorded by D`Silva at that crucial period, which are all criminally forgotten and unavailable on the market. Oliver & Michael, please!

MICHAEL GARRICK ~ LIVE AT PIZZA ON THE PARK, LONDON
VOCALION 9000 (Barcode: 765387900021) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2006 Released: 2007

Pianist / composer Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist has been an icon of British Jazz for the last five decades. His exquisite touch on the keyboards, deep lyricism and unparalleled inventiveness as a composer characterize his entire legacy over time, which has very little rivalry or precedence. This DVD captures his exquisite performance with his new quartet (Garrick – piano, Martin HathawayFind albums by this artist – reeds, Paul MoylanFind albums by this artist – bass and Alan JacksonFind albums by this artist - drums with guest musician Mark HanslipFind albums by this artist – tenor sax).

Garrick seems to be untouchable by time, as he not only looks great but also plays beautifully, as if no time passed at all since he touched the keyboard for the first time. The music includes some of his old and some new compositions, as well as a few standards (all from the Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist stable), which get a typical Garrick treatment, with a dash of British humor. He also recites a couple of poems, as appropriate for a pioneer of the Jazz & Poetry movement and gives a chance to a young gifted player as a guest.

A most enjoyable performance of great Jazz, which warms the heart and makes your feet go “tap tap tap”. The DVD also includes an insightful interview with Garrick, where he warmly (and with a lot of humor again) remembers the “good old days”, which were glorious indeed. I had a great time watching / hearing this and I’m sure anybody familiar with Garrick’s splendid and innovative contributions to music will do as well. 140 minutes.
