ARP LIFE ~ JUMBO JET
GAD 020 (Barcode: 5901549197259) ~ POLAND ~ Pop & Rock

Recorded: 1975 - 1978 Released: 2014

This album is a reissue of the recordings made by Polish ensemble Arp LifeFind albums by this artist, which was co-led by three composers / arrangers: Mateusz SwiecickiFind albums by this artist, Andrzej KorzynskiFind albums by this artist and Maciej SniegockiFind albums by this artist. The group never had a "real" lineup and was essentially a studio outfit, hiring musicians on the ad-hoc basis to record their music. Over time some of Poland´s famous instrumentalists took part in these recordings but paradoxically the ARP Synthesizers, which gave the ensemble its name, were never used by them, as they preferred the Minimoog. The ensemble also cooperated with Poland´s most famous female vocal group AlibabkiFind albums by this artist, which sings the occasional vocal parts. This reissue comprises of two albums released by the ensemble, one of which was released only in cassette format, and a few singles which are included here as bonus tracks.

The music is a typical late 1970s Pop / Disco monstrosity, which can’t be saved by the clever arrangements and occasional interesting instrumental parts. This kind of music paved the road for the dreaded Disco Polo, taking the Art away from music or whatever was left of music in time. But not all is lost, as this album is a perfect example of what should be avoided at all costs while playing music! And of course listening to this stuff today can be a funny and even a hilarious experience, a couple of bottles of vodka later on.

Basically this kind of stuff should be left forgotten in the garbage bins of history, but apparently bad taste never dies and this music has a lot of demand today. Oh well, what do I know?

HARRY BECKETT ~ JOY UNLIMITED
CADILLAC 017 (Barcode: 5020675572485) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock-World Fusion

Recorded: 1974 Released: 2020

This is a reissue / remaster of a classic album by British Jazz trumpeter / composer / bandleader Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist, recorded with a sextet, with also included keyboardist Brian MillerFind albums by this artist, guitarist Ray RussellFind albums by this artist, bassist Daryl RunswickFind albums by this artist, drummer Nigel MorrisFind albums by this artist and percussionist Martin DavidFind albums by this artist. The album presents six original compositions, all by Beckett.

This long overdue reissue was prompted by the publication of Beckett’s biography “The Many Faces of Harry Beckett” by John ThurlowFind albums by this artist, who also wrote the new liner notes, which are featured on the album’s artwork, in addition to the original liner notes by John FordhamFind albums by this artist. The album, which was Beckett’s fourth release as a leader, was released by the small independent CadillacFind albums on this label Records label established by John JackFind albums by this artist in 1973, and which subsequently released several iconic British Jazz recordings, some of which are still waiting for a reissue.

The music on this album is quite different from Beckett’s earlier recordings, which were more within the modern mainstream Jazz idiom. This album is however pure Jazz-Rock Fusion with some World Music influences, mostly rhythmically. In addition to Beckett’s brilliant trumpet parts, the rest of the instrumental work is highly charged by the electric guitar and keyboards, which take the music towards the British Fusion, which flourished at the time.

Russell, Miller and Runswick play some highly exciting soli throughout the album, which could be easily associated with the Fusion bands active at the time, like IsotopeFind albums by this artist, Rock WorkshopFind albums by this artist, IfFind albums by this artist and many others. With the Latin / Caribbean rhythms added, this album is certainly quite unique and in retrospect deserves a much wider recognition than it managed to achieve.

Overall, this is a classic British Jazz gem, worthy a proper place in any serious record collection. It should also be quite educational for the new generation of musicians, showing how cross-pollination and genre-crossing can lead to magnificent results, not to mention the respect due to all these wonderful musicians, who proved there are no limits to creativity. This is an absolute must of course and thanks to John’s initiative to make it available again, which he is practicing on the daily basis by running the Jazz In BritainFind albums on this label reissues label.

ARIK BEN KALIFA / MOGADOR ~ VOICES OF ELI
NOT ON LABEL ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2006 Released: 2007

Israeli bassist / composer Arik Ben KalifaFind albums by this artist spent six years in the US studying upright bass with William BettesFind albums by this artist and electric bass with Stanley ClarkeFind albums by this artist while playing with local bands. Upon his return to Israel in 2004 Arik formed the MagadorFind albums by this artist quintet with his musical partner, guitarist Guy RamonFind albums by this artist and with three young and very talented musicians: Amiram GranotFind albums by this artist (saxophones & flute), Tomer MezamerFind albums by this artist (keyboards) and Stas ZilbermanFind albums by this artist (drums). The band recorded a demo album in 2004 and later this, their debut album, which to me is a major surprise, considering the fact that it is one of the best Fusion albums I’ve heard in a long time. The music, composed mostly by Arik (with a couple of tunes co-composed with Guy) is superbly melodic, incorporating the best Fusion traditions with subtle Middle-Eastern motifs, which is not surprising considering Arik’s cultural legacy - his Moroccan-born father was a traditional oud player. Each of the tunes on the album provides a great melodic basis for the improvisations by the band members and the album offers plenty of excellent solos. Driven by Arik’s pulsating bass lines, the music is full of joy and charm, a real listening pleasure. The sophisticated melodies and the brilliant performances turn this album into something that deserves to be heard and admired, as it is as good, if not better, as any other Fusion album recorded by world’s top players. Hearing stuff like this makes me proud to be an Israeli.

These recordings feature Randy California on vocals, guitars and occasional keyboards, bassists Steve LoriaFind albums by this artist and Mike SheppherdFind albums by this artist, drummers Ed CassidyFind albums by this artist, Jack WilloughbyFind albums by this artist and Preston HeymanFind albums by this artist and others. It is noteworthy to state that Spirit enjoyed a much wider popularity in Europe, mainly in UK and Germany, during most of their musical career.

Overall, this is an incredible piece of American Rock history and a great tribute to one of greatest American Rock bands, which Spirit obviously were, as much as a tribute to the incredible talents of Randy California, who was both an extraordinary guitarist and a superb songwriter, often sadly underappreciated. This is an obvious labor of love and a part of a unique recording legacy document on a scale rarely attempted, which Spirit obviously deserves.

Debut album by a duo of jazz singers: Vered DekelFind albums by this artist from Israel and Miles GriffithFind albums by this artist from the US. Outstanding vocal jazz, well based in the tradition but completely original and innovative. The plethora of sounds and voices produced by these two singers is unimaginable - one has to hear this to believe. Strong and tasteful support by the instrumentalist. Debut album by US Prog quartet DriftFind albums by this artist comprising of guitarist Dave ScagsFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Jack BlairFind albums by this artist, who is also the band´s lead singer and principal songwriter, bassist Steve GioFind albums by this artist and drummer Evan JacobsonFind albums by this artist. The band plays a mixture of Prog with a wide range of other influences from Hard Rock to Punk, producing an overall heavy and massive sound, which takes a bit of getting used to but eventually becomes quite appealing. There are plenty of interesting instrumental passages by all participants throughout the album and the music is dynamic and varied enough to keep the listener interested. The lead vocals are somewhat provocative and perhaps a matter of acquired taste, but they fit the overall nature of the music. The whole album has a distinct "retro" feel and if one didn´t know better it could be easily mistaken for an obscure 1970s release. This band definitely has a lot of potential and I eagerly anticipate their next release. In the meantime let´s enjoy this one!

MAYNARD FERGUSON ~ M. F. HORN 2 / THE BALLAD STYLE OF MAYNARD FERGUSON
VOCALION 8421 (Barcode: 765387842123) ~ CANADA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1969 - 1972 Released: 2006

Canadian Jazz trumpeter / bandleader Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist arrived in UK in late 1968, where Jazz was accepted as a legitimate Art Form and highly appreciated. European audiences were more receptive to new sounds and musical experimentation, be it Free Jazz or Jazz-Rock Fusion, and therefore an ideal refuge for many frustrated American musicians. Ferguson resided in UK between 1968 and 1973, where he was warmly received and his talent promptly recognized. He recorded five albums in UK for the CBSFind albums on this label label, which are considered the pinnacle of his recorded legacy.

This album combines two of these albums, the last and the first of his UK recordings. In spite of the differences between the two albums they both showcase Ferguson’s amazing abilities as an instrumentalist. His famous high-pitched cadenzas and screaming, soaring finales are of course legendary.

"M. F. Horn 2Find albums with this title" is an excellent Jazz-Rock Fusion album, similar to the work of American bands like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist and ChaseFind albums by this artist or British bands like IfFind albums by this artist, but rather than leading a combo, Ferguson is riding the powerful locomotive of a full-fledged big band / brass orchestra, which of course makes a huge difference to the overall sound. Conducted by Keith MansfieldFind albums by this artist, a brilliant arranger and producer, the band comprised of the absolute best British Jazz horn players at the time and sounds like a million dollars. The clever and sophisticated arrangements suit Ferguson’s abilities perfectly and the album is an absolute blast from start to finish.

"The Ballad Style Of Maynard FergusonFind albums with this title" is a complete contrast, showcasing the trumpeter’s solos against a lushly playing orchestra, directed again by Keith Mansfield, who also arranged the music. Some Jazz fans might shrug at this music, considering it almost a Pop effort, but honestly anybody who can appreciate great trumpet performance and a superb orchestra supporting the soloist will find this certainly worth their while. Great stuff!

JOHNNY GRIFFIN ~ POLISH RADIO JAZZ ARCHIVES VOL.11
POLSKIE RADIO 1630-1631 (Barcode: 5907812246303) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1963 Released: 2014

This is the eleventh installment in the new series of releases initiated by the Polish Radio, which presents archive Jazz recordings. Radio recordings are always a fabulous source of remarkable material, and as far as Polish Jazz history is concerned, the Polish Radio, which was a state monopoly for 45 years, recorded over time a plethora of invaluable material, which apart from the albums released by the Polskie Nagrania record company (also a state monopoly), is the only available additional source of Polish Jazz recordings. For many years Polish Radio recorded concerts presented during Poland´s most important Jazz venues, including the annual Jazz Jamboree Festival and many other festivals as well.

The material collected here on two CDs presents recordings made in 1963 at the sixth Jazz Jamboree festival in Warsaw by the legendary American saxophonist Johnny GriffinFind albums by this artist and his quintet. Prior to this recordings Griffin, like many of his Afro-American colleagues, moved to Europe, where Jazz was experiencing an explosive development and was considered an Art Form and racial discrimination was almost completely absent. The quintet includes fellow American pianist Kenny DrewFind albums by this artist, who settled in Europe a couple of years earlier, Dutch guitarist Wim OvergaauwFind albums by this artist, Dutch bassist Ruud JacobsFind albums by this artist and another American, drummer Robert Joseph (real name Robert Joseph Durham or Bobby DurhamFind albums by this artist as he was known to all – Polskie Radio should have known this). In fact the quintet never actually performed as a quintet, but rather as two quartets, one with guitar and without drums and the other with drums and without guitar.

The two CDs, spanning well over two hours, present only nine tracks, all of which are Jazz standards, all running between ten and almost thirty minutes, with extended improvisations, mostly by Griffin, but also some mighty fine work by Drew. Stylistically this is almost all Bebop at its finest and most sophisticated revelation. Griffin was at his absolute peak at that time and his playing is nothing short of stunning. His technical proficiency and superb feel for the music is simply breathtaking. Drew´s subtle accompaniment and beautiful solos are also priceless. All the rest of the crew is also outstanding. In retrospect this music is simply divine from start to finish, a painful reminder that they don´t make music like this any more. This is definitely one of the finest recordings by Griffin, and one of the best volumes of this series.

The beautifully restored sound quality is excellent and the warm ambience of the analog recording is a true joy. As usual with this series, which is very reasonably priced, I miss the presence of "in depth" liner notes / booklet, which should convey the circumstances at which this music was recorded and its importance to the development of Jazz in Poland. Nevertheless this is an absolutely essential piece of Jazz history which every Jazz fan will surely consider an absolute must.

JOHNNY GRIFFIN / HAL SINGER / LESZEK ZADLO / FERDINAND POVEL ~ SWISS RADIO DAYS
TCB 02362 (Barcode: 725095023627) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1975 - 1980 Released: 2013

This is a live archival album, which combines four sessions recorded by the Swiss Radio with a local Swiss rhythm section comprising of German (resident in Switzerland) pianist Klaus KoenigFind albums by this artist, bassist Peter FreiFind albums by this artist and drummers Alberto CanonicoFind albums by this artist, Peter SchmidlinFind albums by this artist or Pierre FavreFind albums by this artist and guest musicians: American saxophonists Johnny GriffinFind albums by this artist from 1975, and Hal SingerFind albums by this artist from 1980, Polish Saxophonist Leszek ZadloFind albums by this artist from 1979 and Dutch saxophonist Ferdinand PovelFind albums by this artist from 1978. The first three sessions present one track and the fourth session presents two tracks.

Griffin, as expected, plays pretty straightforward mainstream Jazz, but the expanded playing time allows him to display his intensive improvisational abilities.

Singer is mostly a Blues traditionalist, and his melodic performance is completely predictable.

Zadlo, resident in Germany since 1975, is obviously the most interesting player on this album, pushing the boundaries of modern Jazz and Improvised Music, in the John Coltrane tradition. His fiery performance is convincing and jaw-dropping, and his presence on this album is the real reason why it is worth having a copy of it.

Povel, who is an excellent player, very active on the European scene at the time, shows that his performances, although still rooted in Bebop, are way more advanced harmonically than anything originating from across the pond.

Overall, due to the presence of Zadlo and Povel, this is a document of the European Jazz scene, especially important since the “Swiss Radio Days” series releases concentrated mostly on visiting American musicians, which seldom contributed interesting material.

This is the 5th album by the great British Jazz-Rock / Prog band IfFind albums by this artist, which sadly didn´t manage to attract the proper attention in spite of their superb achievements. After recording four great albums the original lineup of the group gave up in 1972, soon to be replaced by the second lineup, led by saxophonist / flautist Dick MorrisseyFind albums by this artist. They managed to record 3 more albums before the disbanding for good. This album was originally released only in Germany (no UK release) on the legendary Brain label and the other two were released in UK on the excellent Gull label. The music is a continuation of their previous direction, mixing elements of Rock and Jazz, melodic tunes and instrumental improvisations. In retrospect this sounds pretty good four decade later and no If fan will want to miss this.

REPERTOIRE 1037 (Barcode: 4009910103722) ~ UK ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2006

Thi is the debut album by the superb British Jazz-Rock ensemble IfFind albums by this artist, formed in 1969 by three representatives of the burgeoning British Jazz scene, which was experiencing an unprecedented surge of creativity and revolutionizing the Jazz form at the time. Although partly inspired by American Jazz-Rock pioneers like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist and ChicagoFind albums by this artist, which were gaining wide popularity at the time, If was quintessentially different from its American counterparts.

Essentially Jazz-Rock was "invented" in Britain several years earlier by musicians like Graham BondFind albums by this artist and others, creating a distinctive "sound and feel", which was quite different from the development of the genre on the other side of the pond. The Americans based their bands on the rich "brass" tradition, which was perfected over the years by countless Big Bands and Brass bands, adding an aggressive rock backbeat to the music, whereas the British used a different approach, which basically left the Jazz environment intact, rejuvenating it with modern rhythmic approach and electric instruments (and in some cases adding Rock vocals), but remaining faithful to the Jazz idiom. In short where the American Jazz-Rock mainly rocked, the British Jazz-Rock mainly swung.

If were a great example of these differences and although short-lived, the band produced some of the most exquisite examples of British Jazz-Rock ever recorded. The core of the band comprised of the extraordinary guitarist Terry SmithFind albums by this artist, saxophonist / flautist Dick MorrisseyFind albums by this artist and another saxophonist / flautist Dave QuincyFind albums by this artist (please note the absence of trumpeters). All three musicians had behind them several years of playing Jazz in various ensembles and were amongst the most gifted young British players at the time. Supported by a great and versatile rhythm section: keyboardist John MealingFind albums by this artist, bassist Jim RichardsonFind albums by this artist and drummer Dennis ElliottFind albums by this artist and fronted by unusually gifted and able vocalist J.W. HodkinsonFind albums by this artist, If were an absolutely perfect combination of talent and abilities, which actually worked. This, combined with the abilities of the "in house" composers (mostly Morrissey and Quincy), who crafted incredible melodies; crispy, complex and intelligent yet "easy" on the ear, made If a lean and mean music making machine of staggering proportions. All three main instrumental soloist were wonderful musicians, which is evident on this album from start to finish, but the most incredible work was surely performed by guitarist Terry Smith, who uses every trick in the book and beyond, always fresh and unconventional.

It is most interesting to compare Smith´s work with Chicago guitarist Terry KathFind albums by this artist (what a coincidence – both named Terry), who also was the most gifted instrumentalist in his band. Smith´s adaptation of Jazz guitar techniques into Rock as opposed to Kath´s improvised Rock guitar playing again emphasize the differences between the two bands. Words of praise should also go to If´s vocalist, who demonstrated exceptional feel on top of his wide range and clear, effortless treatment of even the trickiest challenges.

To summarize, If in general and this, their debut album in particular, are superb examples of what great music is all about. Although mostly forgotten and rarely mentioned in most references, this album is as essential to every Jazz-Rock fan as the air he breathes. Ignoring it would constitute an act of criminal negligence, not to mention the complete void in one´s musical education. Did I say essential?

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2006

2nd album by the superb British Jazz-Rock ensemble IfFind albums by this artist, recorded in late 1970 in New York´s Hit Factory studios while they were on tour in the USA. This album is a direct continuation of the splendid job they started on their eponymous debut album just a few months earlier; same lineup and same great music, performed brilliantly from start to finish. The group toured the US and Europe at a frantic paste, which left little time to develop new material, but due to the presence of several great composers in the band they managed to come up with another set of brilliant compositions, performing them with zest and their usual intensity. The American studio didn´t manage to bungle the British sound of the band, which is most fortunate, setting them apart form their American counterparts (see the notes about the debut album on that subject). Despite their extensive touring and exposure, somehow If never achieved the success they so much deserved, neither in the US nor at home. In retrospect the reason might have been simply that they were just too good to "make it" commercially. Fortunately we have their recorded legacy to enjoy, and enjoy we will. This is an absolute essential Jazz-Rock recording of the highest musical quality and an indispensible item in any serious music collection.

REPERTOIRE 1097 (Barcode: 4009910109724) ~ UK ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1971 Released: 2007

This is the third album by the superb British Jazz-Rock ensemble IfFind albums by this artist, recorded in London following a grueling touring schedule in the US and Europe in the months before the recording. Although worn out by touring, the band was tighter and more experienced than ever, keeping the same lineup from the very start, which is evident by their playing on this album (although they were brilliant from day one). They also had more time to work on new material, which proved to be as inspiring as always, but more focused on melody and arrangements rather than the display of extended instrumental improvisations. In many respects this is the most "perfect" If album, closest in spirit to great British Jazz-Rock essence.

Most of the music here was composed by saxophonist / flautist Dave QuincyFind albums by this artist, with two more compositions by keyboardist John MealingFind albums by this artist and one each by guitarist Terry SmithFind albums by this artist and saxophonist / flautist Dick MorrisseyFind albums by this artist. REPERTOIRE 1098 (Barcode: 4009910109823) ~ UK ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1972 Released: 2007

4th album by the superb British Jazz-Rock ensemble IfFind albums by this artist, recorded "live in the studio" and unfortunately the last recording by the original lineup of the group. In spite of intensive touring in the US and Europe, the band never had a chance to record live (which was almost compulsory then) and this was their attempt to recreate the atmosphere of their gigs. Although recorded in a studio, it is live in every respect, i.e. a large crowd was present in the studio during the recording and no overdubs or other studio trickery were used in the recording. The resident band composers came up with a great set of new tunes, rehearsed on the road before the actual recording captured here. This recording is closer in spirit to the first two albums the band recorded, full of spontaneity and superb extended soloing. The guitar work by Terry SmithFind albums by this artist is absolutely outlandish and the other players follow suit. The 10+ minutes opening track is alone worth the price of any album and a superb example of the Jazz-Rock at its best in every respect. Unfortunately shortly after this session and a brief personal change the band fell apart as a result of Dick MorrisseyFind albums by this artist´s illness. Although Morrissey revamped the band later on, which recorded three more albums using the If moniker, those were far apart from the glorious material recorded by the original group. For various management and contractual reasons this album was not released in the US in its entirety (as were the first three albums); instead the "WaterfallFind albums with this title" album released in the US included some of the material present here with the addition of different material recorded for that particular release. This is an essential Jazz-Rock recording of the highest musical quality and an indispensible item in any serious music collection.

This is an album by a reunion edition of the legendary British Jazz-Rock Fusion and Brass-Rock band IfFind albums by this artist, formed in 1969 and active for just over three years, releasing four brilliant studio albums and some live material that was also released since. If is one of my all time favorite bands as far as British Jazz-Rock is concerned. They are joined by keyboardist Guy GardnerFind albums by this artist, bassist Ben TaylorFind albums by this artist, drummer Rod BrownFind albums by this artist and vocalist Dave BrowneFind albums by this artist. Together they perform eight pieces, six of which are original compositions (five by Quincy and one by Gardner) and two are standards.

The music is a mixture of mainstream Jazz and Rhythm And Blues, sadly nowhere near the brilliant material of the original band, neither as far as the compositions are concerned nor the actual playing. Honestly this band sounds like an amateur band playing a gig in a pub, which is an insult to the memory of the original band.

This is a kind of an album which should have never been recorded and even worse released (and sold!) and shows the sarcasm and cynicism of the record label capitalizing on a band´s name. A shame!

Sourced from the BBC vaults, the double album presents twenty tracks of original music by the ensemble members, recorded over two years, which span the initial life span of the ensemble, all previously unissued.

Following the ensemble’s formative days in 1969, the core lineup stabilized as a septet, which included vocalist J.W. HodkinsonFind albums by this artist, saxophonists/ flautists Dick MorrisseyFind albums by this artist and Dave QuincyFind albums by this artist (who wrote most of the material), keyboardist John MealingFind albums by this artist, guitarist Terry SmithFind albums by this artist, bassist Jim RichardsonFind albums by this artist and drummer Dennis ElliottFind albums by this artist. That lineup recorded the ensemble’s first four iconic albums, called simply “IfFind albums with this title”, “If 2Find albums with this title”, “If 3Find albums with this title” and “If 4Find albums with this title”, and disbanded by the end of 1972. That lineup is featured on all the tracks on this album.

The ensemble reformed with a different lineup and continued until 1975, releasing four more studio albums. A reunion lineup released a studio album in 2016, called “If 5Find albums with this title”, which was a sad affair.

Although stylistically somewhat similar to the American Brass Rock groups like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, ChicagoFind albums by this artist, ChaseFind albums by this artist and others, If had a very unique British / European approach, which less emphasis on brass arrangements but way more complex music and sophisticated ensemble sound. For a more detailed comparison, please read my review of the If’s early albums.

Overall, this is a treasure chest of previously unheard material by one of the best British Jazz-Rock ensembles ever, and an absolute must to the genre’s many fans. The sound is a bit iffy, despite the fact that the material was remastered, but the music is outstanding. RepertoireFind albums on this label are doing a remarkable job by bringing the material from the BBC vaults back to life, but their pricing borders on insane and the booklets are a bit trivial and repetitive lately, lacking the proper historical perspective this music deserves. But this is Holy Grail any way one looks at it, so don’t think twice and grab a copy.

US release of the 4th album by the superb British Jazz-Rock ensemble IfFind albums by this artist, partly parallel to the UK release called "If 4Find albums with this title". IT`S A BEAUTIFUL DAY ~ AT CARNEGIE HALL
COLUMBIA 480970 (Barcode: 5099748097026) ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1972 Released: 1995

4th album by the short-lived legendary San Francisco band It`s A Beautiful DayFind albums by this artist. Recorded at the NYC most prestigious venue the band was at its peak at the time supporting their 3rd studio album ("Choice Quality Stuff / AnytimeFind albums with this title"). Leader and violin player David LaFlammeFind albums by this artist plays some amazing improvisations supported by a group of excellent musicians, including future Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist bassist Tom FowlerFind albums by this artist. The material includes only one track from the third album and a few of earlier hits (including the legendary “White Bird”). The rest of the material is new and this is the only album it was ever released on. The group made a formidable transition from their early Psychedelic days into a full-blown Prog band by the time this music was recorded, with strong jazzy and world music influences. Shortly after this recording the group started to disintegrate and the leader left to start a solo career. This is an excellent document of this fruitful era and one of the best live albums ever recorded. Essential item in any serious collection of 1970s music.

MIFRAS ~ SET SAIL
NOT ON LABEL ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2013 Released: 2013

This is the debut album by the international Jazz quartet MifrasFind albums by this artist, led by Israeli (resident in Berlin) drummer / composer Tom DayanFind albums by this artist, with German saxophonist Markus EhrlichFind albums by this artist, German trombonist Nils MarquardtFind albums by this artist and Danish bassist Kenneth Dahl KnudsenFind albums by this artist (also resident in Berlin). Mifras is just one of many such international ensembles active on the thriving Berlin scene, which turn the City again into a significant European Cultural centre. The album presents nine original compositions, all by Dayan.

Obviously a pianoless / guitarless Jazz quartet faces the challenge of performing music without a harmonic instrument, which is relatively uncommon and presents a difficulty both for the performers and the listeners. However, thanks to the comfortable and open format of Dayan´s compositions, the quartet manages to create coherent musical structures, which sound interesting and are aesthetically pleasing. The relaxed atmosphere and lack of tension makes this music easy to be enjoyed. Personally the low-key, delicate, lyrical pieces are my preferable moments on this album.

The four musicians display a high level of interplay and obviously listen carefully to each other, which enables them to communicate well and exchange their ideas successfully. The two brass instrument trade licks and phrases continuously, soloing at lengths. The rhythm section often plays very ethnically, far away from the steady swing usually associated with Jazz, incorporating many World Music rhythmic elements, originating in Africa, Middle East, Caribbean and other cultures. As already mentioned this music offers a lot of freedom and often switches back and forth between composed parts and free improvisation, keeping the listener on his toes.

Overall this is a very promising debut by a very promising ensemble, which is definitely worth following. I am looking forward to their next effort.

MIRAGE ENSEMBLE ~ MEMORY HAPPENS NOW
LOSEN 128 (Barcode: 7090025831287) ~ NORWAY ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2014 Released: 2014

This is the debut album by young Norwegian sextet called Mirage EnsembleFind albums by this artist, which comprises of guitarist Marius IglandFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Joakim BergstronningFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Magnus DragenFind albums by this artist, trombonist Lars SutterudFind albums by this artist, bassist Steinar GlasFind albums by this artist and drummer Jens NylandFind albums by this artist. The album present nine original compositions, seven of which were composed by Igland, one was co-composed by Glas and Nyland and one was composed by Dragen.

The music is dominated by the presence of the brass section, which immediately creates a fond memory of the great Brass Rock bands of the late 1960s and early 1970s, like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, ChaseFind albums by this artist, ChicagoFind albums by this artist, DreamsFind albums by this artist, IfFind albums by this artist and many others, less the vocals of course. There is a strong Jazz-Rock Fusion affinity, even if it´s less explicit here due to lack of guitar as a principal solo instrument. The general level of the compositions is very high and the tunes sound original and are very well structured, often consisting of several motifs within one composition.

The instrumental performances by all the band members are professional and inspired, with most of the soloing done by the brass instruments and with less presence of the guitar, in spite the fact that the guitarist wrote most of the music. The guitar contributions are delicate and subtle, and serve more as the link between the brass and the rhythm sections. The rhythm section plays straightforwardly, but solidly, pushing the music forward at a steady pace, often more Rock than Jazz oriented.

Overall this is an excellent and very promising debut album, which hopefully will be followed by more recordings in the future. Although not innovative or groundbreaking, this is a great reminder of Brass Rock, brought up do date by these young and talented musicians. Well done!

MOON HOAX ~ MOON HOAX
TKLIWI NIHILISCI ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2013 Released: 2014

This is an excellent debut album by young Polish Jazz / Fusion ensemble Moon HoaxFind albums by this artist, co-founded by guitarist Michal KarbowskiFind albums by this artist and bassist Ju GhanFind albums by this artist. The lineup is completed by trumpeter Klaudiusz KlosekFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Michal BakFind albums by this artist, vibraphonist / electronic sounds creator Marcin CiupidroFind albums by this artist and drummer Przemyslaw BorowieckiFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine original compositions, all by Karbowski.

The music of Moon Hoax is a modernized and updated version of Brass Rock / Jazz-Rock Fusion movement represented by a plethora of bands active in late 1960s and early 1970s, like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, ChicagoFind albums by this artist, IfFind albums by this artist, DreamsFind albums by this artist, ChaseFind albums by this artist and many others. If any of those bands would have been active today, they would probably sound quite similar to Moon Hoax, but since Brass Rock is a lost Art Form, this album is a true delight, not only as a kind of retro trip down the nostalgic lane, but as an ass-kicking splendid piece of music, which is fresh and excellent in every respect.

Based on solid melody lines, which are then arranged for the entire ensemble, the music balances between the Jazzy brass section (which sounds much "bigger" than it actually is) and the Rocky guitar, with the vibraphone and electronic sounds filling the spaces and adding the contemporary layer. The rhythm section rocks steadily, but with finesse and great respect for the soloists. There are very few contemporary ensembles which are able to produce such invigorating music of such quality, which puts this album in a class by itself.

Hopefully Moon Hoax will find a way to take this music into the future and find new directions, without loosing the charm. It will be hell to create another such great album as that one; you have been warned!

In the meantime let´s celebrate and enjoy this little gem, as such miracles happen rarely. This is definitely a stunning debut!

DICK MORRISSEY ~ AT THE BBC 1967
RHYTHM AND BLUES 074 (Barcode: 5060331752608) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1967 Released: 2021

This is an archival album by seminal British saxophonist / composer / bandleader Dick MorrisseyFind albums by this artist. The album presents two BBC sessions captured in June and October 1967 performed by his quartet, with included pianist Harry SouthFind albums by this artist, bassist Phil BatesFind albums by this artist and drummer Bill EydenFind albums by this artist. The two sessions produced twelve tracks, with three tunes repeated in both sessions, most being Jazz standards and just one original by South.

The music is all well within the mainstream Jazz idiom, but formidably performed by the quartet and presents Morrissey as a wonderfully talented player, considered at the time as second only to the legendary Tubby HayesFind albums by this artist. Morrissey fans should definitely put their hands on the VocalionFind albums on this label twofer reissue “Here And Now And Sounding Good / Storm Warning!Find albums with this title” of his 1965/66 studio albums, which offer similar music to what can be herd here. The sound quality of these recordings if excellent, which of course makes listening to the music a true pleasure.

Following his Bebop / Hard Bop period, by the end of the 1960s Morrissey switched to the Jazz-Rock Fusion idiom, first with the brilliant group IfFind albums by this artist, which lasted till 1975 and recorded eight albums and later with the Morrissey-Mullen BandFind albums by this artist, formed with guitarist Jim MullenFind albums by this artist, which lasted for fifteen years and recorded seven excellent albums.

Morrissey died from cancer in 2000 at the age of 60, as usual in such cases way too early, as his glorious recording legacy proves.

MIKE PARKER / UNIFIED THEORY ~ EMBRACE THE WILD
NOT ON LABEL ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2013 Released: 2015

American bassist / composer Mike ParkerFind albums by this artist spent a period of a year and a half living in Krakow and playing with local young Polish Jazz musicians. He was a member of the NSI QuartetFind albums by this artist, together with trumpeter Cyprian BaszynskiFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Bartlomiej PrucnalFind albums by this artist and drummer Dawid FortunaFind albums by this artist, recording with them their excellent eponymous debut album. In parallel and with the addition of the saxophonist Slawomir PezdaFind albums by this artist they also recorded this album, Parker´s second recording as a leader so far, which is released only now. It presents eight original compositions, all by Parker (except one co-composed with Prucnal), three of which are parts of a suite.

As already mentioned in my review of the NSI Quartet album, Parker had a huge influence on his Polish cohorts, taking them away from the European Jazz idiom into more traditional American approach. On this album this is even more perceptible, as the band is playing Parker´s compositions and not those by the Polish players, like on the a.m. album.

Parker´s music is a great example of modern American Jazz, which keeps up with the changes happening in the music and manages to get itself free from the stagnation that characterizes most American mainstream. His compositions are all well structured and include melodic statements, which then are improvised on, but the freedom and breathing space present in the music allow the musicians to take off and express their individuality, before returning to the compositional structure. All of his pieces are a pleasure to listen to, and the three-part suite that concludes the album is a profound and very moving composition that proves his great talent as a composer.

Of course Parker also plays some tasteful bass parts and his Polish colleagues, all of them superb musicians as well, make this music to come alive in its full splendor. These are after all some of the young lions that will represent the European Jazz scene in a few years.

Overall an excellent effort, in every respect, definitely worth listening to, so get it ASAP and help Parker to move on and create some more great music for all of us to enjoy!

DOMINIQUE PIFARELY ~ SUITE: ANABASIS
JAZZDOR 01 (Barcode: 3521383463772) ~ FRANCE ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 2020 Released: 2021

This is an album by French Jazz violinist / composer Dominique PifarelyFind albums by this artist, recorded with an octet comprising of violin, two cellos, flute, two saxophones, keyboards and drums. The album presents five lengthy original compositions, all by Pifarely.

The music is beyond straightforward classification, but obviously amalgamates elements of Jazz and modern / contemporary Classical Music, with a distinct French tinge, and a subtle fragrance of Pierre BoulezFind albums by this artist, glimpses of “Les Six” and other great French musical geniuses, but first and foremost expressing the highly individual inner voice of Pifarely.

Despite the complexity of the music, it flows coherently and develops melody lines and atmospheric auras of great beauty. The proximity to Jazz is felt first and foremost in the rhythmic subtext, but also in the multi-layered thematic complexity and some short fragments that sound like “group improvisation”. The instrumentation sounds more Classical, but again today’s genre borders are mostly meaningless. I am not even sure if this music is Avant-Garde, despite its somewhat bizarre exterior, since it makes perfect sense to me, from start to finish, and rather that break completely new ground, it puts great many familiar elements into new arrays of sound.

Pifarely’s role on this album is (for me) primarily that of the composer, despite the fact that he contributes flawless violin parts. All the participants prove virtuosic abilities required to perform this immensely tricky and demanding music. One can only admire the courage to undertake such project and the fact that this music was recorded over just three studio sessions, which from the outside looks like an unsurmountable task, regardless of how much rehearsal time went into it.

Overall, this is a sensational piece of ingenuity, completely original, stimulating and full of sublime musical ideas. There is so much music on this album, that it might serve as a lifetime companion to avid music lovers, as repeated listening will surely reveal additional layers of previously hidden treasures. Although I have been following Pifarely’s recording career since many years, for me this is his best work so far. Yes, music is not a competition, but somehow everything I feel about his music fits here perfectly into a wonderful whole. I feel lucky to know Pifarely in person, which gives me the opportunity to say thank you, my Friend, for this rare gift of your musical talent!

Cliff Richard was an instant success and these albums all charted very near to top with the last album in this set finally capturing the very top. His velvet voice and incredible musicality catapulted Cliff Richard to the position unprecedented by any other Pop star before him. He is the most successful British male solo artist of all time and his only competition worldwide was American superstar Elvis PresleyFind albums by this artist.

These albums present Cliff Richard´s work with the legendary producer / arranger Norrie ParamorFind albums by this artist as well as his first recording with the no less legendary instrumental group The ShadowsFind albums by this artist. This is simply music history in the making.

Cliff Richard managed to maintain a respectable position over the years and is still active today almost six decades after he made these recordings. He proudly created a very impressive legacy, which has but a few equals. These early albums, which have been unavailable for ages, are a must to every British 1960s Pop connoisseur. An absolute must!

Side Note: The "Original Album SeriesFind albums with this title" by Warner Bros.Find albums on this label and the "Original Album ClassicsFind albums with this title" by SonyFind albums on this label are an archetypal example of how good intentions turn sour. Although these new editions often bring back to life some of the best music ever made on this planet, which in many cases have been lost in the tides of time and was unavailable on the market for ages, they suffer from an unforgivable disregard to the essence of cultural values and general sloppiness, contrary to human decency, which requires us to treat our cultural legacy with respect and loyalty. The Box Sets produced under these monikers have no discographical information whatsoever about the lineups, musician names, composers, lyricists, dates and places of recording, original release data and even basic copyright data (the last is strictly illegal BTW). Although the original LP sleeves are reproduced, they are often edited and information (which would be in most cases too small to be readable) is removed. In short the fact that these Box Sets are meant to be inexpensive, does not mean that they have to be cheap. Considering the fact how many times this music has been sold over and over again by the labels, this is a crying shame!

The music includes two original compositions by Seifert. In addition an extensive interview with Seifert (in Polish) is also included, providing a glimpse at his personality and musical ideology. This is exceptional music, which should be revered by every Jazz enthusiast on this planet with no exception. Absolutely essential!

ZBIGNIEW SEIFERT ~ LIVE IN HAMBURG 1978
MILO 01 (Barcode: 5907513047285) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Rock-World Fusion

Recorded: 1978 Released: 2006

This is a sensational live recording by Polish Jazz violinist / composer Zbigniew SeifertFind albums by this artist and his quartet, which includes American (resident in Germany) saxophonist Charlie MarianoFind albums by this artist, German pianist Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist and Yugoslav (also resident in Germany) drummer Branislav KovacevFind albums by this artist, accompanied by the NDR Big BandFind albums by this artist from Hamburg. The album comprises of five tracks, which are simply named "Hamaburg 1" to "Hamaburg 5". The discographical data, such as exact place and date of recording and composition credits are omitted and the album looks and feels like a bootleg, although it is openly sold in Poland.

This music was recorded about a year before Seifert´s untimely death as a victim of cancer. In spite of his terrible sufferings and ordeals related to his rapidly advancing illness, he was at an absolute peak of his musical ability, as this recording plainly demonstrates. He plays vigorously and with incredible passion, and his lengthy solos on this album are among his best ever. Supported by the wonderful quartet and accompanied by the best European Big Band, Seifert is able to immerse himself completely in the music, without any limitations. The result reflects his great love of life and music, which he tried to pursue until the very last moments of his life.

Of course Mariano, Dauner and Kovacev, who were among the finest musicians on the European scene at the time, as well as the outstanding NDR Big Band, are all performing splendidly as well. Stylistically the music includes many elements of Jazz-Rock Fusion and World Music influences, an amalgam that characterized Seifert´s late period. However, his solos are still characterized by the influence of John Coltrane´s legacy, which was the singular most important inspiration on Seifert´s music.

The historic importance of this album is simply invaluable, especially in view of the sadly very limited recorded legacy of Seifert´s works. Seifert managed to record only four albums as a leader during his tragically short lifetime, and the posthumously released material is of secondary importance so far. There are many hours of unreleased music recorded by Seifert waiting to be released, and hopefully those will see the light of day at some stage.

For Polish Jazz fans this album is an absolute must of course, but listeners interested in Jazz violin and anybody who is able to appreciate some of the most moving moments offered within the Jazz idiom should also try to get their hands on this gem ASAP. Absolutely brilliant stuff!

ZBIGNIEW SEIFERT ~ LIVE RECORDINGS 1973 & 1976
SWR JAZZHAUS 479 (Barcode: 730099047951) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1973 - 1976 Released: 2021

This is a sensational archive album by Polish Jazz violinist / composer Zbigniew SeifertFind albums by this artist. It presents live recordings from the vaults of the German SWR broadcasting corporation. The first four tracks are performed by a duo comprising of Seifert and legendary German trombonist Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist, captured at the 1976 Donaueschingen Musiktage, produced by my Friend and Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist. Two of the pieces are spontaneously improvised and the other two are composed one each by Seifert and Mangelsdorff. The fifth track, recorded at the 1973 New Jazz Meeting in Baden-Baden, also produced by Berendt (at his home town), finds Seifert as a member of an international Jazz-Rock Fusion sextet with New Zealand (resident in UK at the time) pianist Dave MacRaeFind albums by this artist, Dutch keyboardists Jasper van`t HofFind albums by this artist, Belgian guitarist Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, who also composed the tune they perform, German bassist Peter TrunkFind albums by this artist and British drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist.

The duo tracks are simply sensational, a beautiful example of the “Art of the Duo” idiom and Improvised Music at its best. Mangelsdorff was already a veteran pioneer of the duo (and solo) formats by that time, but as far as Seifert was concert this is certainly a rare occasion to hear him is such naked intimate setting, although a few months earlier Seifert recorded his solo violin album, which was still unreleased at the time.

The sextet track reflects perfectly what Seifert was into at the time, playing and recording with European musicians, who recognized his exceptional talent, and paving his way to the international career he was destined for, which sadly never materialized when his lost his battle with cancer.

The SWR vaults are a treasure chest of superb live music, which is being constantly released on records. In this case the material is especially important due to the relatively limited recorded legacy by Seifert, which means that every bit of his music is priceless, especially when recorded at such high sound quality as the music on this album.

Overall this is an absolute essential piece of the Polish Jazz recorded history, which dedicated fans will nor willingly miss. But it is recommended to all European Jazz fans since it reveals the incredibly high level of creativity and versatility the genre enjoyed in the 1970s. Wholeheartedly recommended!

ZBIGNIEW SEIFERT ~ MAN OF THE LIGHT
PROMISING MUSIC 44112 (Barcode: 602527326283) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1976 Released: 2010

This exceptional album by Polish violin virtuoso / composer Zbigniew SeifertFind albums by this artist was the first major exposure of his talents outside of his motherland. Legendary MPSFind albums on this label producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, who had close ties to the Polish Jazz scene, was aware of Seifert´s incredible talent and managed to pull off this recording session, bringing on board a superb team of players, which consisted of German pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and an American rhythm section: bassist Cecil McBeeFind albums by this artist and drummer Billy HartFind albums by this artist. Dutch pianist Jasper van`t HofFind albums by this artist also participates on one track.

Seifert composed all the music on this album, which is a great example of typical Eastern European Jazz, which cleverly combines elements of modern American Jazz, especially that of John ColtraneFind albums by this artist, with Folklore and Classical influences. Seifert´s "obsession" with Coltrane´s music and his improvisational technique are plainly evident, especially during the up-tempo numbers. The album´s title track is dedicated to Coltrane´s pianist McCoy TynerFind albums by this artist.

Hearing the album 35 years after it was recorded makes one realize how great music gets better with time, losing absolutely nothing of its initial grandeur. Both Seifert and Kuhn play some incredible solos here and the rhythm section supports them admirably every step of the way. Tragically, just three years after this music was recorded Seifert died, stricken by cancer, before his endless potential was realized and recognized properly.

Seifert managed to record several albums in the US before his untimely death, but this album is definitely his most important and most perfect legacy. Absolutely essential!
Side Note
The legendary German MPSFind albums on this label (Musik Produktion Schwarzwald) label, founded by Hans Georg Brunner-SchwerFind albums by this artist (HGBS) in 1963, first as SABAFind albums on this label Records and later on from 1968 as MPS Records, was the most important independent European record label, which had an enormous contribution to the development of European Jazz. For many years MPS cooperated with the legendary German producer / author Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, my Friend and Mentor, whose visionary approach and open-mindedness brought the crème de la crème of the Jazz (in the broadest meaning of the word) musicians from all over the world to the label. Between 1963 and 1983 MPS produced about five hundred albums, many of which are among the most important Jazz recordings on this planet.

In 1983 the MPS catalog was sold to UniversalFind albums on this label, which sadly resulted in all those artistic treasures to almost disappear from the face of the earth – a situation not only tragic but culturally criminal. Universal reissued a part of the MPS albums (probably 128 titles) on CD between 1999 and 2011 under the "Most Perfect Sound Edition" moniker.

Since 2008 the German Promising MusicFind albums on this label label released some of the MPS recordings, but at a very slow pace.

In 2014 the German company Edel AG bought the MPS catalogue from Universal and released a series of 25 MPS albums on CD with a new slipcase graphic design, which brought all those excellent albums back to life. In 2015 Edel AG started to record and release new albums under the MPS moniker. In 2016 Edel AG released a series of 10 classic MPS albums on CD, which were beautifully remastered and re-packaged, presenting the original artwork and liner notes, as well as new liner notes and photographs. An obvious labor of love, these reissues are what the MPS catalogue truly deserves. This project was continued in 2017 with another series of 10 classic MPS albums released on CD. In later years some new reissues were released sporadically.

Over the years many SABA / MPS albums were reissued in Japan, which is often the only available source for these albums today, but that is a story in itself.

ZBIGNIEW SEIFERT ~ NORA
GAD 001 (Barcode: 5901549197006) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1969 - 1970 Released: 2010

This wonderful album collects all the existing recordings by the early Jazz quartet led by Polish violinist / saxophonist / composer Zbigniew SeifertFind albums by this artist, a world class virtuoso who was unfortunately taken away from this world by the ever-so-cruel cancer at the ridiculous age of 32. Seifert discovered Jazz while being a student at a music high school, where he studied classical music. Immediately stricken by Jazz, he started to live a double life, continuing his degree studies as a classical violinist and in parallel playing and later leading his own Jazz quartet. Seifert almost immediately moved into modern Jazz, even ultra-modern at the time, as his immediate model would be the late period John ColtraneFind albums by this artist. Seifert´s hypersensitive and well trained ears were able to follow Coltrane´s convoluted music note by note, thus enabling him to absorb his style. In order to emphasize the separation between his classical violin training Seifert played the alto saxophone exclusively at the early stages of his career, returning to the violin only much later, a move which gained him his international recognition and success, cut short soon after by his untimely death.

By the end of the 1960s Seifert was a permanent member in the Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist quintet, Poland´s pioneering Free Jazz outfit at the time, as well as leading his own quartet with pianist Jan JarczykFind albums by this artist, bassist Jan GonciarczykFind albums by this artist and drummer Janusz StefanskiFind albums by this artist (who was also a member of the Stanko quintet). The quartet never recorded an album for the "Polish Jazz" series, but three of their performances were recorded by the Polish Radio and are presented on this album: The 1969 concert at the Jazz nad Odra Festival and the 1969 and 1970 concerts at the Jazz Jamboree Festival – all together eight tracks, only two of which (taken from the 1969 JJ) were previously released on record in a various artists compilation entitled "New Faces In Polish JazzFind albums with this title" (Polish Jazz Vol. 20). Seifert composed five of the tunes, Jarczyk one and the other two are standards. The music is just sensational, mostly almost Free, with long and well developed solos by Seifert and Jarczyk, with superb backing by the rhythm section.

That kind of music would fit perfectly well anywhere in the world at that time, but taking into account the fact it comes from Poland, a country deep beyond the Iron Curtain with minimal exposure to the latest trends and under a Socialist regime, which does not tolerate artistic deviance, it is an absolute miracle. The historic importance of these recordings is invaluable, especially since the quartet wasn´t able to secure a proper studio recording in a reality when the only record company on the market was state owned and run by party officials. Thank God for the Polish Radio archives and the initiative to compile and release this album. Although "too little too late" applies here, so does "better this than nothing".

I´ll add that in order to fully appreciate this music in proper historic perspective and its meaning in the history of Polish (and Eastern European) Jazz, I´d recommend reading the recently published Zbigniew Seifert excellent biography entitled "Man of the Light", by Aneta NorekFind albums by this artist – alas this privilege is limited to people who can read Polish (unless the book gets translated into English, which it truly deserves). In the meantime savor this fantastic music, as it lost nothing of its intensity over time. A must to all Polish Jazz lovers!

ZBIGNIEW SEIFERT ~ POLISH RADIO JAZZ ARCHIVES VOL.32
POLSKIE RADIO 2145 (Barcode: 5907812248697) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1970 - 1978 Released: 2018

This is the thirty-second installment in the series of releases initiated by the Polish Radio, which presents archive Jazz recordings from the radio vaults.

The seven tracks presented here were recorded by one of the most iconic Polish Jazz figures: saxophonist / violinist / composer Zbigniew SeifertFind albums by this artist, who sadly died at a ridiculously young age succumbing to cancer. Influenced by the music of John ColtraneFind albums by this artist, Seifert revolutionized the Polish Jazz violin school and achieved international recognition. All the tracks are original compositions by Seifert.

The first five tracks were recorded live on November 14, 1978 at the "Pod Jaszczurami" Jazz club in Krakow, just three months before Seifert´s death. They were recorded by a quintet, which also included guitarist Jaroslaw SmietanaFind albums by this artist (also not with us anymore, another victim of cancer), keyboardist Janusz GrzywaczFind albums by this artist, bassist Zbigniew WegehauptFind albums by this artist (my dear and sadly also departed friend) and drummer Mieczyslaw GorkaFind albums by this artist. Grzywacz and Gorka were at the time members of the legendary Polish Jazz-Rock ensemble LaboratoriumFind albums by this artist while Smietana and Wegehaupt were at the time members of another no less legendary ensemble Extra BallFind albums by this artist. The music, although composed by Seifert, gets here a Fusion oriented treatment, as a result of the fact that all members of the quintet except for Seifert were involved with Fusion at the time.

Sadly these five tracks are only a selection from the entire recording session captured by Polish Radio Krakow, which has been previously partially released as a double LP entitled "KilimanjaroFind albums with this title" by the Polish Jazz Society label PoljazzFind albums on this label (available also separately as "Kilimanjaro Vol.1Find albums with this title" and "Kilimanjaro Vol.2Find albums with this title") and later on as a double CD bootleg album in its entirety. Why wasn´t the entire material finally released properly and legally on this album is a mystery and sadly a grave opportunity loss to put things in order once and for all and honestly a mess!

The sixth track originates from a recording Seifert made with the Polish Radio Jazz Studio OrchestraFind albums by this artist directed by Jan Ptaszyn WroblewskiFind albums by this artist in 1972. It presents him as a soloist backed up by an excellent Jazz orchestra, performing one of his early compositions, which is also previously unreleased.

The seventh and last track goes even further back and was recorded in 1970 during the thirteenth edition of the Jazz Jamboree Festival. On this track Seifert plays saxophone and is accompanied by pianist Jan JarczykFind albums by this artist, bassist Jan GonciarczykFind albums by this artist and drummer Janusz StefanskiFind albums by this artist. This track was already released in 2010 by the great Polish reissue label GADFind albums on this label Records on the album "NoraFind albums with this title", dedicated to Seifert´s early recordings, and the inclusion of this track here is redundant and somewhat questionable.

ZBIGNIEW SEIFERT ~ SOLO VIOLIN
ZBIGNIEW SEIFERT FOUNDATION 3 (Barcode: 5907222048023) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1976 Released: 2017

This is the first legitimate reissue on CD of the solo violin album by the legendary late Polish Jazz violinist Zbigniew SeifertFind albums by this artist. Recorded during a concert at Radio Bremen in 1976, the album was released only a couple of years later in Germany, and has been an extremely rare collector´s item in its original vinyl form for decades. The album presents just four original compositions, all by Seifert. Shortly before this music was recorded Seifert was diagnosed with cancer, which tragically killed him just three years later, and the album was supposed to pay for his medical bills.

Solo violin Jazz albums are extremely rare, and as such this album has been a beacon and a point of reference since its release as far as violin in Jazz is concerned. Seifert´s virtuosity and uniqueness are immediately apparent from the very first tones, and he does not cease to amaze for the entire forty seven minutes the music lasts.

Well trained listeners will obviously recognize the immense influence of John ColtraneFind albums by this artist´s music on Seifert´s playing, and Seifert has been many times referred to as the Coltrane of the violin. But beneath the Coltrane influence on the way Seifert improvises, one can also hear his deep European and Polish roots, not only in his compositions, but also in his tonality and expression, which are always deeply lyrical and melancholic, even at the height of the climatic eruptions.

In many respects this album tells more about Seifert than most of his other recordings, where he plays with other musicians and his playing is just a part of a bigger picture. The "nakedness" of this music in also 100% proof Seifert, at his absolute best. Therefore this album is so unique not only due to its unusual setting, but also due to the fact that it is presents Seifert isolated from all external influences and disturbances, in his most direct and straightforward self. The superb sound quality of this album enhances the experience of listening to the music enormously.

Of course this album is also exquisitely beautiful and powerful, and should leave absolutely no listener untouched. For Polish Jazz fans and Seifert´s numerous followers this album is obviously the Holy Grail of Polish Jazz recordings. Big thanks to the Zbigniew Seifert FoundationFind albums on this label, spearheaded by Aneta NorekFind albums by this artist, for bringing this National treasure back to life, for old admirers to enjoy again and new ones to discover.

TERRY SMITH ~ FALL OUT
SUNBEAM 5008 (Barcode: 5051125500819) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1968 Released: 2006

Guitarist / composer Terry SmithFind albums by this artist was one of the busiest musicians on the British Jazz scene in the late 1960s. Voted the best Jazz guitarist in the 1968 polls, when this album was recorded, Smith was not only playing at the regular Jazz venues around London, but was also a member of the backup group of singer Scott WalkerFind albums by this artist, who was at the peak of his popularity at the time. Walker, although extremely successful as a Pop artists, had a keen musical ear and was trying to get away from the sugary Pop image by employing some of the best Jazz musicians at the time In his band, which was led by no other than the legendary Ronnie ScottFind albums by this artist. Walker used his influence with his label (PhilipsFind albums on this label) to offer a recording opportunity to some of the young and extremely talented musicians in the band, which led to the recording of this debut album by Terry Smith. As this album shows, Smith already had an extraordinary technique and feel for Jazz. Based on the tradition created by players like Kenny BurrellFind albums by this artist and Wes MontgomeryFind albums by this artist, Smith took his guitar work a few steps further adding his personal touch. Of course just a few months later Smith would become one of the founding members of the British Jazz-Rock ensemble IfFind albums by this artist, which successfully competed with their American counterparts like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist and ChicagoFind albums by this artist. TONY WILLIAMS / LIFETIME ~ LIVE IN NEW YORK 1969
HI HAT 3084 (Barcode: 5297961308411) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1969 Released: 2017

This is a live recording by the legendary pioneering Jazz-Rock Fusion trio Tony Williams LifetimeFind albums by this artist, founded by American drummer Tony WilliamsFind albums by this artist and including also organist Larry YoungFind albums by this artist and British guitarist John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist. It presents some of the material that was released on the trio´s debut album "Emergency!Find albums with this title" and some material from their second album "Turn It OverFind albums with this title", which was recorded and released after this concert was recorded with the British bassist Jack Bruce as a fourth member of Lifetime.

The music is of course absolutely stunning, light-years ahead of its time, presenting a futuristic amalgam of Avant-Garde Rock, Jazz and Improvised Music, with a heavy, muddy sound dominating the proceedings kicked forward by Williams´ hyper energetic drumming. Although this music is often considered as some of the most important early Jazz-Rock Fusion, it was in fact more daring and advanced that most of the genre´s output that followed.

McLaughlin was of course exposed to the true Jazz-Rock Fusion cradle at least five or so years earlier, when he was a member of the Graham Bond QuartetFind albums by this artist, which is where this genre was born. His remarkable performances here are simply blood-curdling.

The trio´s genesis is of course connected to the association of its members with Miles DavisFind albums by this artist and his Fusion period, which culminated with the recording of the iconic "Bitches BrewFind albums with this title" album. Lifetime was only one of several iconic groups born from musicians playing with Miles at the time, such as Weather ReportFind albums by this artist and Mahavishnu OrchestraFind albums by this artist.

Although the sound of this recording is not ideal, neither is the sound of the studio recorded "Emergency!", and considering the rarity and the importance of the music this is a must for Tony Williams Lifetime fans and followers of Fusion history!

Although the sound quality and sometimes also music quality range from absolutely brilliant to pretty poor, most of the material is surely listenable, especially after being remastered recently, and more importantly offers music which is not available elsewhere.

The company releases the albums under several sub-labels: Air CutsFind albums on this label, EchoesFind albums on this label, Hi HatFind albums on this label, HotspurFind albums on this label, InterferenceFind albums on this label, KeyholeFind albums on this label, KlondikeFind albums on this label, Live On VinylFind albums on this label, London CallingFind albums on this label, OrbitFind albums on this label, Rox VoxFind albums on this label and Sound StageFind albums on this label. There is no ironclad logic as to what material appears on which label, except perhaps some internal considerations by the Obiterdictum owners.

Approach with caution, but keep in mind that some of these releases are absolutely brilliant!

TONY WILLIAMS / LIFETIME ~ TURN IT OVER
ESOTERIC 2257 (Barcode: 5013929735729) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2011

This is the 2nd album by the revolutionary Tony Williams LifetimeFind albums by this artist, a groundbreaking group created by drummer Tony WilliamsFind albums by this artist with British guitarist John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist and organist Larry YoungFind albums by this artist. On this album the group is extended to a quartet with the inclusion of another great British musician – bassist / vocalist Jack BruceFind albums by this artist. The group was a pioneering force of the Jazz-Rock Fusion and set up not only the standards, which would be followed decades on, but also most of the tricks of the trade for the new and emerging genre. The playing is absolutely incredible, innovative and virtuosic and the music lost absolutely nothing over time, in fact it sounds even better than at the time it was recorded, especially in comparison to contemporary Fusion efforts. This is one of the most influential albums in music history and an absolute must in any decent record collection. Beyond essential!

ZIFF ~ SANCTUARY
ANGULAR 8205 ~ GERMANY ~ Progressive Rock

2nd album from 1997 by this legendary German Neo-Prog outfit. Lots of energy and heavy guitar licks, long & complex compositions and the Queen of Prog Lana Lane (see her album) singing on 2 tracks. One of those albums sounding best at max volume.
