ARILD ANDERSEN ~ CELEBRATION
ECM 2259 (Barcode: 602527909479) ~ NORWAY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2010 Released: 2012

Norwegian bassist / composer Arild AndersenFind albums by this artist has been one of my favorite musicians since decades and his immense talent and class were always beacons of light in the dark. His elegance and natural cool emphasize the best qualities of Scandinavian Jazz in particular and European Jazz in general. His numerous recording, mostly for ECMFind albums on this label, are all exemplary and his unshaken quality over the years is simply legendary.

This album finds Andersen in quite unusual circumstances, cooperating with a large Jazz Orchestra, in this case the Scottish National Jazz OrchestraFind albums by this artist directed by saxophonist Tommy SmithFind albums by this artist. He and the orchestra perform five compositions by fellow ECM musicians: Dave HollandFind albums by this artist, Jan GarbarekFind albums by this artist, Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, Keith JarrettFind albums by this artist and Trygve SeimFind albums by this artist (Garbarek and Seim being also fellow Norwegians) and one of his compositions, celebrating the music of ECM, which is considered by many to be the most important contribution to contemporary musical Culture in the last four decades.

The six compositions have been arranged for the large orchestra, with the arrangements being very delicate and spacey, opening up slots for beautiful bass solos performed by Anderson and other musicians. The overall atmosphere of the music is very lyrical and somewhat subdued, applying the famous Scandinavian touch to the entire project, even in the case when the original music originates well beyond that sphere of influence. Andersen stands in the focal point performing some absolutely amazing bass solos, which could drive most bass players to complete despair. As stated before, the orchestra takes a step back, playing subtly and beautifully, but always remaining in the background, where it belongs in this particular project. This modesty and proper perspective deserve a great praise.

The music was recorded live and as usual for an ECM production offers a wonderful sonic quality in addition to the obvious musical virtues. Those familiar with Andersen´s achievements will love this music and those still ignorant of them should use this opportunity to repent. Brilliant stuff!

ATOM STRING QUARTET ~ PLACES
KAYAX 049 (Barcode: 5907678818089) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 2012 Released: 2012

This is the 2nd album by the Polish Jazz string quartet called Atom String QuartetFind albums by this artist, comprising of violinists Mateusz SmoczynskiFind albums by this artist and Dawid LubowiczFind albums by this artist, violist Michal ZaborskiFind albums by this artist and cellist Krzysztof LenczowskiFind albums by this artist, which introduced a novel and revolutionary concept on the local scene combining the Classical Chamber music tradition and Jazz. Following the debut album recorded live, this is their first studio effort and it includes ten pieces, with just one originating outside the quartet (Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist´s "Spain"); the rest are all originals: four by Lenczowski, two by Zaborski, one each by Lubowicz and Smoczynski and the remaining one co-composed by Smoczynski and Lenczowski. The album was recorded at the Polish Radio studios in Warsaw and mastered by Jan SmoczynskiFind albums by this artist at his Studio Tokarnia, as usual with spectacular sonic results.

Following the spectacular debut, which took the local scene by surprise, the approach on this album is quite different. This album is much more concentrated on the compositions rather that the virtuosic performances and the element of novelty which dominated its predecessor. The album presents a "concept" of the relationship between music and the place it originates from, trying to show the different and the similar at the same time. Therefore many folkloristic themes from all over Europe appear here as part of the milieu, including of course the beautiful Polish melancholy, which is omnipresent in music originating from Poland. This World Music tendency takes this album a bit further away from Jazz, at least conceptually.

As expected, the individual performances are nothing short of sublime, and the entire album is a deeply moving listening experience. However, listeners familiar with their debut might miss the "spark" and "spontaneity", which was so evident there and which were replaced here by careful planning, maturity and eloquent elegance. It is therefore almost impossible to compare these two albums, as they in fact present the different facets of the same group. Listeners longing for the lively approach of the debut will have to see the group live or perhaps wait for the next live recording.

For me the most important and meaningful aspect of this album is the progress in the quality and strength of the compositions, which start to become identifiable with the ensemble, which of course is an important step forward. Once the quartet develops its true individual musical identity (overcoming the fact that the music comes form four individual members), they will reach the apex of their development.

For now we are presented with another excellent album by one of the most intriguing music ensembles in contemporary music, which is definitely not only a great listening experience but also a victory of quality and intelligent music over our mundane "cultural" encounters in real life. Well done Gentlemen!

BANDHADA ~ BANDHADA
MYLODON 021 (Barcode: 3426300045782) ~ CHILE ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1984 Released: 2004

Only album by the excellent Chilean Jazz-Rock group BandhadaFind albums by this artist, which was active on the local scene in the early 1980s and unfortunately managed to record only one brilliant album. The instrumental music played by the band resembles the sound of early Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist, especially due to the excellent flute parts played by Juan Carlos NeumannFind albums by this artist, which remind me of Joe FarrellFind albums by this artist’s exquisite playing. The electric piano and synthesizer played by Alfonso FeeleyFind albums by this artist and the pulsating bass played by Felipe ClarkFind albums by this artist also remind Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and Stanley ClarkeFind albums by this artist respectively. Carlos ChungFind albums by this artist on guitar and Juan CoderchFind albums by this artist on drums compliment the quintet’s lineup, both contributing their excellent input. The music is superb, with splendid melodies and quite complex rhythm changes, with plenty of space for individual improvisations. This reissue includes two live tracks in addition to the original album. People who like early Jazz-Rock and a great sense of melody should enjoy this album immensely.

KAJETAN BOROWSKI ~ TOTEM
INETIVE 001 (Barcode: 190394260682) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2015 Released: 2016

This is the debut album by Polish pianist / composer Kajetan BorowskiFind albums by this artist, recorded in a classic piano trio setting with bassist Jakub DworakFind albums by this artist and drummer Grzegorz MaslowskiFind albums by this artist; all three are representatives of the upcoming new generation of Polish Jazz musicians. The album presents eleven original compositions, all by Borowski, and one standard.

The music is firmly positioned within modern melodic mainstream, with elegantly weaved tunes and spirited execution. Borowski displays the typical Polish sensitivities in his ballads, with tendency towards melancholy and lyricism, but on the up tempo numbers, he uses a much more energetic approach, with polyrhythmic Latin predisposition, somewhat similar to Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist´s Latin / Spanish period. Sometimes I wonder if the only music young Polish pianists listen to is Frederic ChopinFind albums by this artist and Chick Corea.

Technically all three players are beyond reproach; Borowski uses powerful chords and delicate glissandos with the same skill and sensitivity, Dworak plays clear and supportive bass lines, including occasional beautiful solo parts and Maslowski drives the music steadily forward, without being overly intrusive, with just occasional overzealousness on the cymbals. Their performance as a trio is very good, with obvious affinity and respect towards each other.

This is a kind of album, which does not attempt to step beyond presenting a solid piece of mainstream Jazz of the best caliber and as such does not include any surprises or explorations beyond the obvious. But within the entire scope of the Jazz idiom such albums are also needed and appreciated, and when they offer music of such quality, as this one, all is well.

Overall this is an excellent debut effort, definitely worthy of praise and encouragement, and obviously promising great things in the future. Therefore it is highly recommended to all Polish Jazz followers and particularly to piano trio lovers. The album was recorded at the RecPublica Studios and offers a superb sound quality.

RANDY BRECKER & MATS HOLMQUIST / UMO ~ TOGETHER
MAMA 1056 (Barcode: 734956105624) ~ SWEDEN ~ Big Band Jazz

Recorded: 2018 Released: 2018

This is a wonderful Big Band Jazz album, which features American trumpeter Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist, Swedish composer / arranger / conductor Mats HolmquistFind albums by this artist and the Finnish UMOFind albums by this artist Jazz Orchestra. The album presents nine tracks, five of which are composed and arranged by Holmquist, three are composed by Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and arranged by Holmquist and one is a standard arranged by him.

UMO Jazz Orchestra has been one of my favorite Big Bands since forever and the performances captured here affirm this lasting admiration. Brecker solos brilliantly on each and every track, sharing soloing duties with other UMO band members and the Orchestra plays like one organic body, despite the fact that the players are constantly rejuvenated with “new blood” from the local Finnish scene.

Holmquist compositions and arrangements are a quintessential amalgam of the American Big Band tradition and the European Orchestral Jazz approach, where the sound is meant to be organic as an ensemble rather than just soloist supported / accompanied by an orchestra.

The music is all within the mainstream Jazz boundaries, highly melodic and perfectly organized both harmonically and rhythmically, but the sound is modern and the performances heartwarming, creating a superb listening experience. The Corea pieces offer a new perspective on his compositions, which alone are worth the price of the album.

Overall, this is an excellent, although somewhat conservative Big Band album, which is honey on the ears of Orchestral Jazz lovers. Brecker fans will find him in top form of course, playing in different moods, which is always highly rewarding. Heartwarming music for warm summer nights (or winter nights by a fireplace). Delightful!

BURTON / METHENY / SWALLOW / SANCHEZ ~ QUARTET LIVE
CONCORD 888072313033 (Barcode: 888072313033) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2007 Released: 2009

In the 1960s the celebrated American vibraphonist / composer Gary BurtonFind albums by this artist led a quartet, which also included guitarist Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist, bassist Steve SwallowFind albums by this artist and drummer Roy HaynesFind albums by this artist (and later Bob MosesFind albums by this artist). That quartet recorded a series of brilliant albums, which in retrospect clearly show how pioneering and revolutionary that music was at the time, giving birth to Jazz-Rock Fusion years ahead of anybody else in the US. The young and up-coming guitarist Pat MethenyFind albums by this artist joined that same quartet just a few years later (mid-1970s), adding his unique input to the quartet´s sublime legacy.

This live recording at the legendary Yoshi´s Jazz club in Oakland captures a reunion of the original (1970s) quartet with the exception of the Mexican drummer Antonio SanchezFind albums by this artist, who is of course a member of the much younger generation of Jazz players, but his remarkable qualities suited the occasion perfectly. They perform a series of mostly original compositions by the three veteran group members, which have all been performed at the time by the original quartet. A few compositions originating from outside the quartet, but performed at the time, as also included, those being by Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, Carla BleyFind albums by this artist, Keith JarrettFind albums by this artist and Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist.

This quartet treats these compositions quite differently in comparison to the original performances, bringing the arrangements up to date both sonically and stylistically, which awards them a second life. The overall level of performance is of course stellar, which is not surprising considering the aggregation of talent present. It is really great to hear Metheny play Jazz again, which he scarcely does with his own group. Both Burton and Swallow seem to be completely untouched by time and sound in top form. It is truly uplifting to see Jazz veterans being able to create music, which is fresh and valid today, as it was decades ago. Great stuff!

GARY BURTON ~ LIKE MINDS
CONCORD 013431480327 (Barcode: 013431480327) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1997 Released: 1998

This is an album by iconic American vibraphonist / composer / bandleader Gary BurtonFind albums by this artist, recorded in a quintet setting with a dreamy lineup, which includes pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, guitarist Pat MethenyFind albums by this artist, British bassist Dave HollandFind albums by this artist and drummer Roy HaynesFind albums by this artist. The album presents ten tracks, nine of which are original compositions (four by Metheny, three by Corea and two by Burton) and one is a standard.

Apart for the fact that this is the first album on which Corea and Metheny play together, everything else about it is completely ordinary: the music is all within melodic mainstream Jazz, no challenge whatsoever, all perfectly executed of course by these brilliant musicians, but a classic example of music going nowhere really.

Of course many Jazz listeners can enjoy this album immensely, but in retrospect it left no lasting impression. Burton, Corea and Metheny play exactly like they always do on their own albums and the quintet does not reach an ensemble sound. The rhythm section is as perfect as possible, but again they just play completely ordinarily. As much as I love and respect the individual musicians playing here, this album just ain’t cutting it. And yes – it won the Grammy in 1999…

Overall, this is a typical American Jazz album of the late 1990s, which offers smooth, likeable music, which shows exactly what is wrong with American Jazz – it is just frozen in time for decades. Great for cocktail parties…

GARY BURTON ~ THE NEW QUARTET
ECM 1030 (Barcode: 602567431152) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1973 Released: 2019

This is a reissue of the debut album as a leader by American Jazz vibraphonist / composer Gary BurtonFind albums by this artist, recorded in a quartet setting with guitarist Mick GoodrickFind albums by this artist, bassist Abraham LaborielFind albums by this artist and drummer Harry BlazerFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven tracks, one of which is an original composition by Burton, two were British composer Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist, one was by British pianist / composer Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist and finally one each was by American musicians / composers Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, Keith JarrettFind albums by this artist and Carly BleyFind albums by this artist, all of the above (except Beck) Burton cooperated with at some time in his career.

This was the first album as a leader by Burton on the ECMFind albums on this label label, but he did release his debut coleader album with Chick Corea on ECM “Crystal SilenceFind albums with this title” earlier in 1973. The same year he recorder the legendary coleader album with Michael Gibbs, called “In The Public InterestFind albums with this title” (Goodrick plays on it), and soon after recorded another album with Gibbs for the ECM label, called “Seven Songs For Quartet and Chamber OrchestraFind albums with this title” (Goodrick also plays on it). All this explains a lot about the lineup and the material included on this album.

Burton’s move to the European ECM label was largely influenced by his growing affinity towards European Jazz and its aesthetics, which were much closer to his personal taste in music than the stagnant American scene. His meeting with European musicians and composers opened a lot of new opportunities and horizons, and his connection with ECM lasted until mid-1980s, when ECM started to lose its ambitious direction.

The music is of course absolutely gorgeous, from start to finish. The intimate dialogues between Burton and Goodrick are blood-curdling, and the somewhat mysterious atmospheric music is enthralling for the entire duration.

Overall, this is a brilliant album, a must-have in any serious Jazz records collection and a highly document of Burton’s career in the early 1970s and his association with ECM. Goodrick’s guitar work is also exceptional and considering his rather limited discography, this is quite a gem.

KUBA CICHOCKI ~ AUDUBON LAB EXPERIMENT
NOT ON LABEL 024606956035 (Barcode: 024606956035) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Funk Fusion

Recorded: 2016 Released: 2016

This is the debut album by Polish (resident in NY) Jazz keyboardist / composer Kuba CichockiFind albums by this artist, recorded with his ensemble called Audubon Lab ExperimentFind albums by this artist, which also includes bassist Dylan KaminkowFind albums by this artist, drummer Allen BranchFind albums by this artist and percussionist Francis BenitezFind albums by this artist. Vocalist Bogna KicinskaFind albums by this artist (another Polish NY resident) guests on one track. The album presents five original compositions, all by Cichocki.

The music is a typical Jazz-Rock Fusion, which was popular in the early 1970s and closely follows the pattern of Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist´s early albums with Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist or Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist´s albums of that period. The music is very melodic and offers a Funk groove, which makes it a very pleasant listening experience, although at the same time invoking a strong déjà vu feeling.

The fact that there is only one instrument capable of soloing makes the overall experience a bit trying, but on the other hand the sound of the Rhodes is irresistible and people who have profound nostalgia to that kind of music will definitely enjoy it.

The rhythm section does a great job; the bass keeps the Funky feeling up quite brilliantly, and performs a few nice solo parts, and the two percussionists add a polyrhythmic background, which also keeps the music bubbling.

Overall this is a superb Funky / Fusion album, which is a great fun to listen to and perhaps even to dance to. Nothing innovative, au contraire, a strong nostalgic trip to the time when music was based on the "no bullshit" approach. Funky / Fusion fans will have a field day with this, as nobody makes music like this today. Unadulterated Fun(k)!

The performances are absolutely stunning from start to finish and the player´s virtuosity obvious at all times. Telepathic conversations, solos, duos, trios and the entire quartet playing chase each other constantly, creating an atmosphere of intellectual tension and anticipation. This is absolutely brilliant stuff, which has been one of my favorite albums for forty years now. A must to all Free Jazz listeners!

STANLEY CLARKE ~ JOURNEY TO LOVE
EPIC 468221 (Barcode: 5099746822125) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1975

3rd album by one of the most important Jazz / Fusion players / composers Stanley ClarkeFind albums by this artist. A brilliant instrumentalist on both the acoustic and electric basses, Clark first came to the attention of Fusion fans as a member of Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist’s Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist, where he played some of the most innovative bass parts of the genre. His ability to switch between the acoustic and electric bass and his incredible musicality and sense of rhythm made him the world’s leader on his instrument, to be surpassed later only by the mighty Jaco PastoriusFind albums by this artist (please note Clarke plays fretted bass guitar and Pastorius fretless bass guitar, which are quite different in many ways). This album is considered his best release ever. With a stellar cast including Chick Corea, John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist, Jeff BeckFind albums by this artist, Lenny WhiteFind albums by this artist, George DukeFind albums by this artist, Steve GaddFind albums by this artist and David SanciousFind albums by this artist, Clarke presents a series of brilliant compositions, each one in a different style and instrumentation. The absolute highlight of the album is the acoustic trio (with Corea and McLaughlin) dedicated to John Coltrane. Also the “Concerto For Jazz / Rock Orchestra”, performed with a brass section, is an amazing piece of classic Fusion. This is an absolute must for any Fusion / good music fan.

STANLEY CLARKE ~ NIGHT SCHOOL
HEADS UP 7118 (Barcode: 053361711894) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2002 Released: 2007

It’s no secret that Stanley ClarkeFind albums by this artist is one of my favorite bass players ever. His amazing sensitivity, complete control of both the acoustic and electric versions of the instrument and his innovative approach to music are his trademarks for the last 40 years, rivaled only by Jaco PastoriusFind albums by this artist, whom he preceded as one of the forefathers of Fusion, when he was a member of Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist’s Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist. Unfortunately Clarke’s recorded legacy as a leader is not really reflective of his true abilities and he has been largely absent from the scene in the last two decades. Therefore having a new document of his amazing talents handy is a joyous occasion. The concert presented here documents Clarke leading a group of over 30 musicians (a list of which reads like a who’s who of jazz and Fusion) in various formations, from solo performances to quartets, quintets and a big band, all fronted by Clarke himself. The concert culminates with a band, including no less than eleven bass players (all taking a solo in turn), jamming over Clarke’s “School Days”. This “bass orgy” is one of the most incredible performances I’ve ever watched / listened to and the entire DVD is an absolute must to any serious Fusion fan anywhere on this planet. The DVD also includes bonus material and interviews. Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound, 120 minutes.

STANLEY CLARKE ~ THE COMPLETE 1970S EPIC ALBUMS COLLECTION
SONY 886979312227 (Barcode: 886979312227) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1974 - 1979 Released: 2012

American bassist / composer / bandleader Stanley ClarkeFind albums by this artist is one of the iconic figures of the Jazz-Rock Fusion explosion, which swept the world in the late 1960s / early 1970s. His distinctive and virtuosic bass lines have set standards, which are followed to this very day, with very few bass players being able to play as technically perfect as he always did and even fewer to be as inventive, groundbreaking and innovative. Although primarily associated with Fusion and the electric bass guitar, Clarke always was (and still is) an exceptional acoustic bass player with a superb Jazz technique and sensitivity.

Clarke first came to prominence as a member of the first lineup of the legendary Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist´s ensemble Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist, where his bass lines shaped the music as significantly as Corea´s keyboard wizardry. Clarke stayed with the original band for several years and remained a Corea´s friend and collaborator in the decades that followed. In parallel to his work with Return To Forever, Clarke started a solo recording career, which produced some of Fusion´s and later also Funk´s greatest moments.

Following the release of his debut solo album on PolydorFind albums on this label, he switched to the NemperorFind albums on this label label (currently owned by SonyFind albums on this label) and later on to the EpicFind albums on this label label (a subsidiary of ColumbiaFind albums on this label). He recorded five albums for Nemperor between 1974 and 1979, the last of which was a live double LP. In the 1980s and early 1990s his albums were released on Epic. This Box Set includes all the five albums released on Nemperor and as a bonus also a live album recorded during Clarke´s band tours in 1976-1977, which was released only in 1991.

Of course the list of names of the musicians, who play alongside Clarke on these albums, reads like an encyclopedia of American music of that period. To mention just a few: keyboardists Jan HammerFind albums by this artist, George DukeFind albums by this artist, Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, David SanciousFind albums by this artist and others, guitarists Bill ConnorsFind albums by this artist, Jeff BeckFind albums by this artist, John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist and others, drummers Tony WilliamsFind albums by this artist, Steve GaddFind albums by this artist, Lenny WhiteFind albums by this artist, Gerry BrownFind albums by this artist and others and a myriad of other musicians. Clarke composed almost every note played here, with very few exceptions, and the music is absolutely marvelous and ass-kicking, as it was at the time it was recorded.

Clarke was often criticized for utilizing his vocals on some of these albums, which of course was not one of his fortes, but since the vocals are relatively scarce and in retrospect really not that bad, that point of criticism id completely insignificant in view of the majestic content of the music contained herein.

Every bass player today, consciously or subconsciously, directly or indirectly is influenced one way or another by what Stanley Clarke played over the years, and this Box Set is a great way to celebrate his talent. Brilliant stuff!

Of the fourteen pieces on the album, Cohen composed twelve, adding to the repertoire just one folk tune and one composition by the pianist. The overall effect is truly refreshing and the combined skills of the musicians involved create an album of rare beauty, which contains an immense amount of new and exciting music. This is a truly remarkable follow up to the great debut, which announces many great things to come out of this extraordinary talent. A must!

As 2021 nears its end it’s time to commemorate the passing of one of the greatest heroes of American Jazz, keyboardist / composer / bandleader Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, who sadly passed in February this year.

This is the last studio album by Corea, recorded with an octet, which includes also drummer Marcus GilmoreFind albums by this artist, bassist Carlitos Del PuertoFind albums by this artist, saxophonist / flautist Jorge PardoFind albums by this artist, guitarist Nino JoseleFind albums by this artist, trombonist Steve DavisFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Michael RodriguesFind albums by this artist and percussionist Luisito QuinteroFind albums by this artist. Tap dancer Nino de los ReyesFind albums by this artist and vocalists Ruben BladesFind albums by this artist, Gayle MoranFind albums by this artist and Maria BiancaFind albums by this artist also appear on selected tracks.

The album re-visits Corea’s compositions from the albums “My Spanish HeartFind albums with this title” and “TouchstoneFind albums with this title”, presents two newly composed pieces for this album and also two pieces by other composers (Paco de LuciaFind albums by this artist and Antonio Carlos JobimFind albums by this artist) and finally a short treatment of a Classical composition, together eleven tracks.

The music is distinctly more Latin oriented that the original albums, taking it somewhat away from the Jazz facet and deeply into the grooves and rhythms of Spanish, Cuban, Brazilian and other areas of Latin music, all beautifully arranged, orchestrated and performed by these splendid musicians, under the guidance of the leader. This international team, which includes players from Cuba, Spain and American based musicians born in Latin countries, adds the authentic flavor, which was somewhat more hinted on the original albums. In the liner notes Cores says: “I might be of Italian heritage, but my heart is Spanish”, which certainly explains his adoration for the Latin zest.

Although the album does not introduce anything innovative as far as Corea’s musical heritage is concerned, it certainly confirms his unique talents as composer and player, which have always been beyond reproach.

Overall, this is certainly a proper document of one of the many facets of Corea’s music, which embraced a plethora of styles, genres and approaches, from Avant-Garde to Fusion, always brilliant and completely unique. His Artistry will be sadly missed and his sweet personality, to those who met him, will be always a cherished memory.

CHICK COREA ~ CHILDREN`S SONGS
ECM 1267 (Barcode: 602517762176) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 1983 Released: 2008

US pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist has been in the epicenter of modern Jazz for the last five decades, always on top and up-to-date, a living legend. Corea´s recorded legacy accumulated over time amounts to a staggering body of work, presenting him as a prolific and diverse Artist, who can be inventive and intelligent regardless of the musical circumstance he finds himself in, be it Free Jazz, Fusion, contemporary Classical or just straight ahead (well never really "straight ahead") Jazz. This album presents him "flirting" with contemporary Classical material – twenty miniatures for solo piano and one trio (with violin and cello) piece, which he composed over a period of years. These miniature are all exquisite little pieces, delicate as china dolls, and seemingly simple, hence the name. The entire album is a true delight from start to finish and proves that Corea is in par with other 20th Century composers; at least as far as the miniature form is concerned (see Béla BartókFind albums by this artist, Zoltán KodályFind albums by this artist and others). Brilliant stuff!

What a fantastic and sadly overlooked album! Recorded in 1999 with his group OriginFind albums by this artist and the London Philharmonic OrchestraFind albums by this artist, this is Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist’s first “serious” flirt with classical music. Combining jazz and classical music is not new per se, but the results over the years varied between banal and brilliant. Fortunately this one belongs to the latter category. Corea proved over the years his amazing versatility in the jazz genre, composing and performing in every sub-genre between free jazz and fusion. This time he steps beyond the strict jazz field and shows that he can do it splendidly. The album includes two major works (each in three parts): his already “classic” composition Spain arranged for sextet and orchestra and the Concerto No. 1 for piano and Orchestra. The music is of course typical Corea, but the orchestral parts bring reminiscences of Gershwin’s classical works and works of the French Modernists. Of course the entire work is original and intricate enough to provide the listener with immense pleasures. The recording quality is superb, with each instrument heard distinctly and in full range. Special merit goes to Avishai CohenFind albums by this artist’s bass contributions. Most warmly recommended and essential for Corea’s fans!

STRETCH 888072356030 (Barcode: 888072356030) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2011 - 2012 Released: 2014

As incredible as it might sound, pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist has been an integral and continuous element of the soundtrack of my life for the last five decades. I travelled with him hand in hand through every album he released over the years, moving from modern Jazz, to Free and Improvised Music, to piano solo miniatures, to Fusion, back to modern mainstream, to piano-vibraphone duets, to piano duets, to electric groups and acoustic trios, to Classical explorations and on and on. What a journey...

As usual every new album by Chick is an adventure. It´s been a while since he released a solo piano album and this 2CD set full of outstanding solo performances is a true delight in every sense. All the music was recorded live during his solo piano performances in Europe, Canada and US (and even Africa). On the first CD Chick performs several lengthy interpretations of pieces by Thelonious MonkFind albums by this artist, Bud PowellFind albums by this artist and Bill EvansFind albums by this artist, one standard and one pop song by Stevie WonderFind albums by this artist. The last track on the first CD is his composition dedicated to Paco De LuciaFind albums by this artist. On the second CD he performs twenty five miniatures, first by Classical composers Alexander ScriabinFind albums by this artist and Bela BartokFind albums by this artist and then two sets of his own compositions grouped under the common titles: "Children´s Songs" and "Portraits". Both CDs include Chick´s spoken interludes explaining his intentions and motivations behind the music he performs.

It seems pretty superfluous to try and explain anything about the music herein. Obviously it presents a wide scope of cultural backgrounds from Classical European music to modernism and than Jazz and its various facets and finally the personal universe of Chick Corea, which is able to contain all that infinite richness and expand upon it. Chick´s way of playing is very personal and quite recognizable to his followers and connoisseurs, so there are no great surprises in that area, except that for a man in his seventies Chick is infinitely more alive, creative and inventive than today´s young zombie generation stuck inside their smart phones.

Technically the music is superbly recorded, with excellent detail and warm ambience, which makes listening to this album a delightful experience. Chick is still one of the leaders of the Jazz pack and life seems to treat him and his music well, for which we all should be grateful. Listening for two hours to this music is a trip to sanity so put your feet up and enjoy as long as you can.

CHICK COREA ~ SARDINIA
CANDID 33112 (Barcode: 708857331123) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 2018 Released: 2023

This is a live album by the great American Jazz pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, recorded with the Orchestra da Camera Della SardegnaFind albums by this artist, and released posthumously. The album presents seven tracks, two of which are spoken introductions, three are parts of the Piano Concerto No. 24 by Wolfgang Amadeus MozartFind albums by this artist and two are by George GershwinFind albums by this artist, one song (in a solo piano version) and the Godly “Rhapsody In Blue”. The album is appropriately subtitled as “A Night of Mozart & Gershwin”.

Corea’s affinity and involvement with Classical Music is well documented on record and with his virtuosity and impeccable taste at helm, the results of his flirting with Classical Music were always extraordinary, as is, not surprisingly, this one. Captured about a couple of years before Corea’s untimely death, it shows him still in perfect form, which he managed to preserve to the very end. It seems to be his last live recording available on record so far.

The music is a perfect example of the right balance between the source, i.e. the original scores of the music, and Corea’s interpretations of it, including his improvised parts. It all works absolutely coherently, in perfect harmony and obvious respect, which characterized Corea’s work in all areas throughout his career.

Although described as “unconventional” by critics, personally I don’t see any lack of convention in this music, on the contrary, Corea’s improvisations are playful, intelligent and creative, but perfectly fitting the original compositions, which, if such thing was possible, most probably would have been approved by the original composers with a huge smile and a raised hat.

“Rhapsody In Blue” (RIB) is probably the most influential piece of music in my life and I have listened to countless versions of it, both live and on record, in the seven decades since my existence on this speck of dirt we all share. My very early years were full of Classical Music, which I have spent conducting orchestras in front of our old, big radio in our living room. Gershwin’s RIB was a true shock, as it opened by ears to a new world, which at the time I didn’t even know exists, called Jazz. Although RIB is completely composed, every note of it, it is full of Jazz spirit, even if Gershwin himself didn’t really intend it to be so. The solo piano parts just beg to be expanded by improvisation, a concept I was not familiar with at the time, but sensed deeply, and comparing different versions of this Masterpiece became a sort of obsession for me. Imagine my surprise, when during a conversation with Chick Corea, who visited my home, we discovered a common enthusiasm about this piece of music (which Corea mentions in his introduction). Listening to this album vividly and fondly brings back that and other conversations I was lucky to have with the Maestro. It is therefore not surprising that the version of RIB on this album is my favorite moment. Corea’s touches on the keyboard herein are simply divine. What a pity you are gone my Friend.

Overall, this is a brilliant example of what this kind of Jazz-Classical Fusion is all about: respect, intelligence, vison and above all honesty! For the many Corea’s followers, this is an absolute must, especially those less aware of his love affair with Classical Music. Somehow, quite surprisingly, this album was almost completely ignored upon its release, which is a true shame. Absolutely not to be missed!

This is another piece of music by legendary pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist which amalgamates Jazz and Classical music, a tendency Corea seems to favor since a few years back. The rest of the CD is taken by 11 solo piano improvisations, composed and performed by Corea. Since the second CD has nothing in common with the first one it should be seen as a kind of "bonus", which of course is welcomed by Corea fans, enjoying everything he records. As 2021 nears its end it’s time to commemorate the passing of one of the greatest heroes of American Jazz, keyboardist / composer / bandleader Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, who sadly passed in February this year.

This is a 3CD album by Corea, recorded live at the NY Blue Note club in 2011, during the celebrations of his 70th Birthday. It features ten different lineups with thirty musicians, which span Corea’s extraordinary career and which produced some of the greatest American Jazz ever. Together the collected list of musicians sounds like the Who’s Who of the 20th Century American Jazz (and a few Europeans for good measure).

For the avid Corea fans, who followed his career for five decades (up to that point) the album does not innovate of course, being primarily an overview and it excludes his early days, when he played mostly Avant-Garde Jazz, but a comprehensive summary would have taken a few more hours (or CDs) of course. But as it is, it offers four hours of incredible, diverse and superb music, performed by brilliant musicians, so one can’t go wrong here.

STRETCH 888072356856 (Barcode: 888072356856) ~ USA ~ Jazz

This is an album by the American Jazz pianist / composer / bandleader Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist recorded with his trio which includes bassist Christian McBrideFind albums by this artist and drummer Brian BladeFind albums by this artist. Three guest musicians appear on selected tracks. The music was recorded live during two extended tours by this trio. The album presents seventeen tracks, which are a mixture of five Corea originals, eleven standards and one Classical piece arranged by Corea, spread over 3 CDs.

Corea (born 1941) has been one of the most prominent American Jazz musicians in the last six decades and his contribution to the genre is simply beyond putting it into words. He performed in many diverse Jazz environments but his solo piano and the classic piano trio work was always my absolute favorite part of his astounding musical heritage. As much as I admire his own compositions, his interpretations of Jazz standards are among the finest out there, in the same stratum as those by Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist and Keith JarrettFind albums by this artist.

I have followed Corea´s recordings zealously for decades and had the pleasure to listen to him play many a time as well as meet him in person on several occasions. Anybody who ever heard Corea play live must have observed his superb ability to communicate with the audience and create an unprecedented rapport, which is almost always also present on his live recordings, including this one.

The trio plays together marvelously and the age difference between the Master and his rhythm section is completely insignificant. A perfect balance as far as dividing the roles and exchanging solos, which is flawlessly documented by the outstanding recording quality, turns this album into an ecstatic (but also highly aesthetic) listening experience.

Yes there is nothing new here and we have heard it all before – so what? Jazz of such high quality is like air and water – there is never too much of it. Corea proved over time that he is one of the most inquisitive American musicians, who tried everything Jazz has to offer between Jazz-Rock Fusion to Avant-Garde explorations, so he certainly can´t be accused of clinging to the weathered American Jazz formulas. Playing classic mainstream Jazz as good as the music presented here is always high Art. Hats off to you Maestro!

The members of this great Jazz trio, comprising of pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, bassist Miroslav VitousFind albums by this artist and drummer Roy HaynesFind albums by this artist, met briefly in the late 1960s, when they recorded Corea´s 2nd album as a leader called "Now He Sings, Now He SobsFind albums with this title", which was one of the great recordings of that period. On this album they continue their musical journey together, now certainly more mature and with a lot of experience behind them. This album, originally released as a double LP, presents the trio in two quite different settings. The music, which was originally present on LP 1, is a set of trio and duo improvisation, whereas the music on LP 2 is a series of compositions by the great Thelonious MonkFind albums by this artist, uniquely transformed by the trio. With musicians of this caliber one should expect nothing less that perfection, and this is exactly what this album is all about: perfection. The trio simply floats in perfect harmony, from one tune to the next, as if this incredible music was the easiest thing to do, which of course it surely isn´t. Just grab it and immerse yourself in these sounds, blissfully forgetting everything else. Brilliant stuff!

CHICK COREA ~ TRIO MUSIC LIVE IN EUROPE
ECM 1310 (Barcode: 602517758315) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1984 Released: 2008

US pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist has been in the epicenter of modern Jazz for the last five decades, always on top and up-to-date, a living legend. Corea´s recorded legacy accumulated over time amounts to a staggering body of work, presenting him as a prolific and diverse Artist, who can be inventive and intelligent regardless of the musical circumstance he finds himself in, be it Free Jazz, Fusion, contemporary Classical or just straight ahead (well never really "straight ahead") Jazz. This live recording spotlights Corea´s talents as an interpreter of Jazz standards, as well as performing his own compositions and compositions by his fellow musicians. The trio (called "Trio Music") includes two other legendary musicians: bassist Miroslav VitousFind albums by this artist and drummer Roy HaynesFind albums by this artist, and is one of Chic´s "regular" groups that he records and tours with. The performance is absolutely stunning, from start to finish and Corea´s virtuosity, great sense of humor and intelligence are simply breathtaking. Brilliant stuff!

ECM 1260 (Barcode: 042281527425) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Following a series of duet recordings for the ECMFind albums on this label label, pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and vibraphonist / composer Gary BurtonFind albums by this artist cooperated once again on this project, which adds a string quartet to their wonderful duo, creating a sextet, albeit not a "classic" Jazz sextet one might expect. The music is a suite especially composed by Corea, which combines Jazz and contemporary Classical music, a trend Corea followed many times later on in his career. Both the music and the performances are brilliant, as usual with these two Master musicians, and every Corea / Burton follower will not miss this for the world. A must!

CONCORD 888072172258 (Barcode: 888072172258) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2018 Released: 2018

This is a 2CD live album by pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and his Acoustic BandFind albums by this artist trio with bassist John PatitucciFind albums by this artist and drummer Dave WecklFind albums by this artist. Vocalist Gayle MoranFind albums by this artist, Corea’s wife, is featured on one track. The album presents twelve compositions (one repeated twice), six of which are Corea originals and the other six are standards. Recorded in January of 2018, almost exactly four years ago (as of the time of writing), this was one of the last Corea’s albums recorded before his passing in 2021.

Among Corea’s enormous recording legacy, my favorites have always been his classic piano trios, regardless of the stylistic setting, starting with his early Avant-Garde trios, via Trio Music, Trilogy or Akoustic Band, those trios were always spectacular. I always felt that Corea felt the best in a piano trio setting and his most creative performances continuously emerged in that environment.

Corea and the Akoustic Band recorded three albums in the early 1990s and played some concerts in 2004 / 2005, which were filmed and released on video, and this final “reunion” of sorts came as a big surprise and joy of course, as hearing this sublime trio is always an exhilarating experience.

The choice of material is hardly surprising, combining both some of his favorite original compositions and standards that he loved to play. The unity, telepathic conversation, mutual admiration and respect between the trio members is obviously immediately apparent, from the onset of the music to the very last second.

Overall, this album immediately joins the ranks of the top classic piano trio Jazz recordings of all times, presenting an everlasting example of artistry, excellence and aesthetics rarely achieved, but forever admired. No serious Jazz records collection should exist without this album being a part of it, and hopefully the album stays in print long enough for everybody to grab a copy. It was already reprinted once, so please keep it this way. An absolute must!

CHICK COREA / STEFANO BOLLANI ~ ORVIETO
ECM 2222 (Barcode: 602527796925) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2010 Released: 2011

Pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist is obviously very fond of the great Art of piano duets; over the years he pioneered this highly demanding and difficult performing act with such piano luminaries like Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist, Friedrich GuldaFind albums by this artist, Nicolas EconomouFind albums by this artist, Gonzalo RubalcabaFind albums by this artist and recently Hiromi UeharaFind albums by this artist. This live recording of the duet with the great Italian pianist / composer Stefano BollaniFind albums by this artist is the latest chapter in this long saga. They perform twelve pieces, which include three co-composed improvisations, one original tune each and the rest are standards. The performance is stellar, from start to finish, as expected. Both players are obvious virtuosi and their mutual respect and understanding turn the two pianos into one instrument, which is grander that the sum of its parts. This album marks the return of Corea to the legendary ECMFind albums on this label label after many years – a most welcome event. There is no real need to add much more here; those familiar with Corea´s previous duo recordings will be surely delighted again, those unfamiliar with this great musical Art form should try it out – the sooner the better. CHICK COREA / GARY BURTON ~ HOT HOUSE
CONCORD 888072333635 (Barcode: 888072333635) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2011 Released: 2012

The duo of pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and vibraphonist / composer Gary BurtonFind albums by this artist has a history of almost four decades behind it and proves to be not only one of the most stable musical collaborations, but also one of the most prolific. The body of music the duo managed to records over the years is truly staggering, and belongs today the everlasting heritage of the Jazz Art Form.

Most of the music the duo recorded in the past was composed by Corea and Burton and therefore for this new project they decided to concentrate on Jazz standards, albeit selecting the lesser known material. Only after the material for this album was completed, they tried out a new piece by Corea, which was eventually recorded by the duo with the support of a string quartet and added to this album. This last piece is a preview of things to come, as they say in the liner notes, which surely will be another celebration, when released.

Corea and Burton are both aestheticians in addition to being musicians / artists, which sets them aside from most of their contemporaries. They both share a burning love for elegance, sophistication and grace, which is then reflected in their music. Those listeners, who are open-minded enough to comprehend and recognize these qualities in music, which are often hidden in small details and even under the surface, are able to enjoy this music in full. Hearing Corea and Burton perform is like watching a pair of dancers swirling around each other in a passionate engagement. This is always music with a capital M, and one must acknowledge that their ability to continue astonish us time after time if truly astounding.

Listeners familiar with the duo´s output need little encouragement to plunge again into their magic universe, but should the reader of these lines be blissfully ignorant of their brilliance, this album might be just the first step in the right direction. Sublime stuff!

CHICK COREA / GARY BURTON ~ THE NEW CRYSTAL SILENCE
CONCORD 230630 (Barcode: 888072306301) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 2007 Released: 2008

The original 1972 ECMFind albums on this label "Crystal SilenceFind albums with this title" album by Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and Gary BurtonFind albums by this artist was undoubtedly one of the pivotal Jazz recordings in every sense: the subtlety and the boldness of a duet setting with Corea´s intricate compositions and the unusual harmonics of the piano / vibraphone combination all contributed to the overall stunning result. Now, 35 years later, gray-haired and musically wiser, Corea and Burton decided to re-live the experience of creating music together and record an up-to-date version of their encounter. This time the project is much more ambitious, as the first of the two CDs presents the duo accompanied by a Symphony Orchestra (the Australian Sydney Symphony), playing a set of Corea´s compositions arranged for the orchestra by Tim GarlandFind albums by this artist. The second CD returns to the original intimate duo setting, which performs several more of Corea´s compositions and three standards. As expected, these performances are brilliant in every respect: on the technical level both musicians are virtuosi, and on the emotional level both are superbly lyrical and expressive. Corea´s compositions deserve all the status of classics of course and these new interpretations of familiar material shed a new light on its elegance and sophistication. This is an instant classic, a must for any serious Jazz connoisseur and a landmark recording. Wholeheartedly recommended!

CHICK COREA / NICOLAS ECONOMOU ~ ON TWO PIANOS
DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON 028947900115 (Barcode: 028947900115) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 1982 Released: 2012

Pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist is well known for his amazing versatility (among other things), which is expressed by the many different settings in which he performs. His love for the piano duet is universally acclaimed, starting with his legendary duet recordings / performances with Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist in the late 1970s. Since then he repeatedly returned to the piano duet with many other pianists, like Hiromi UeharaFind albums by this artist, Stefano BollaniFind albums by this artist and others. This album is a most welcome reissue of the 1982 recording of the piano duet performances with Corea and the great Cypriot pianist Nicolas EconomouFind albums by this artist, who died tragically at the ridiculous early age of 40 in a car accident. The live recording comprises of two improvised pieces (one of which is an extended suite 26 minutes long), two Corea compositions and six short pieces from the Bela BartokFind albums by this artist "Mikrokosmos" cycle. The performances are, as one might expect, absolutely brilliant and although Economou comes primarily from the Classical music sphere, the two musicians converse openly and quite telepathically. Considering the fact that these recordings were never previously reissued on CD and unavailable for almost 30 years, it´s great to see them back in circulation. A must to all Corea fans and people who lave piano music!

CHICK COREA / BÉLA FLECK ~ THE ENCHANTMENT
CONCORD 888072302532 (Barcode: 888072302532) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2006 Released: 2007

Although coming from different musical backgrounds, the duo of pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and virtuoso banjo player / composer Béla FleckFind albums by this artist works very well due to the fact that both are truly open-minded about music and both see in improvisation their primary way of expression. The duo cooperated already before this album was recorded, when Corea played as a guest artists on two album recorded by Fleck´s ensemble FlecktonesFind albums by this artist and Fleck appeared in the "Rendezvous in New YorkFind albums with this title" concerts, which celebrated Chick´s 60th birthday.

For this project they both composed new music, with Chick contributing four pieces and Béla six. They also perform one standard, so the album comprises of eleven duets, which sound as if piano and banjo were the most natural pairing of musical instruments, this obviously thanks to their virtuosity and mutual respect. The music is all excellent, combining many different influences and styles, from Jazz through Latin, Bluegrass, Country, Ragtime, Classical and World Music, a much diversified amalgam, which is simply delightful.

The music produced by this duo is so rich and fulfilling, that it lacks absolutely nothing as far as the presence of other instruments (a rhythm section for example) might have added. It is precisely that delicate balance between these two instruments, which creates these enchanting harmonies and moving melodies. A tad out of the ordinary at first, they soon blend into an inseparable union, with the whole being greater then the sum of its parts. And so, against all odds, this is another minor masterpiece, created by two great musicians, and we´re lucky to be able to enjoy it. Do yourself a favor and listen to this stuff at your earliest convenience – satisfaction guaranteed!

CHICK COREA & STEVE GADD BAND ~ CHINESE BUTTERFLY
STRETCH 888072042186 (Barcode: 888072042186) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2017 Released: 2017

This is a 2CD studio album recorded by a band co-led by two legendary American musicians: keyboardist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and drummer Steve GaddFind albums by this artist, who recorded together many times before, but never co-led a band together. They are joined by guitarist Lionel LouekeFind albums by this artist, saxophonist / flautist Steve WilsonFind albums by this artist, Cuban bassist Carlitos Del PuertoFind albums by this artist and Venezuelan percussionist Luisito QuinteroFind albums by this artist. Vocalist Philip BaileyFind albums by this artist joins them on one tune. The album presents eight tracks, six composed by Corea, one co-composed by him and Loueke and one is a John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist composition.

The music is all highly melodic, with a strong Latin tinge, dominated by typical Corea’s Fusiony compositions and lengthy improvisations, which allows the excellent musicians to show their chops. Three of the tracks last for well over quartet of an hour and document the “jam like” atmosphere of this recording session.

Most of the music is new, written by Corea especially for this album, but a new and much extended version of the classic “Return To Forever” song, which features Bailey, is certainly one of the highlights of this album. In some respect this album could be regarded as a preamble to the “Antidote” album recorded a couple of years later and features some of the musicians present on this album.

Overall, this a great and highly rewarding album, which offers the familiar Corea’s musical explorations between Fusion and Jazz-World Fusion, to which he returned in the few last years of his life. Superb compositions and performances, which never fail to bring a smile. Highly recommended!

CHICK COREA / HERBIE HANCOCK ~ AN EVENING WITH CHICK COREA & HERBIE HANCOCK
POLYDOR 835680 (Barcode: 042283568020) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1978 Released: 1988

The 1978 acoustic piano duet tour of Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist is documented on two albums – this one and the ColumbiaFind albums on this label companion album (also called An Evening WithFind albums with this title). Fortunately Chick & Herbie played so much music during their concerts that the two (both double vinyl albums originally) have no parallel tunes on them, except for the signature tunes: “Maiden Voyage” and “La Fiesta”, which get a completely different treatment on each release. This means that, as the music on both albums is absolutely divine (see my comments on the other album), they are both absolutely essential and constitute in fact a non-separable document. There is a slight difference in the choice of material on both releases, with this album including more complex and “freer” pieces with plenty of opportunities for both players to demonstrate their complete command of the instrument and more “unusual” playing techniques. On a side note: the tour was arranged not only to enable the two incredible musicians to enjoy each other’s company and inspiration, but also to “give the finger” to the horde of critics, which brutally dismissed Chick’s & Herbie’s 1970’s electric / fusion work, accusing them of betrayal towards the jazz Art Form and doubting their artistic integrity (which of course was a heap of nonsense). The performances included on these two albums prove how totally wrong they all were. Unfortunately two tracks on this album were edited (shortened) to enable the release of this material on a single CD (an artistic crime, that should be punishable by beheading the corporate decision-makers). Therefore a proper reissue of this album is still due – hats off to Columbia for not making the same stupid mistake.

CHICK COREA / JOHN MCLAUGHLIN ~ FIVE PEACE BAND LIVE
CONCORD 231397 (Barcode: 888072313972) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2008 Released: 2009

Pianist Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and guitarist John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist are both icons of contemporary music. Their activities in the last 40 years span such a vast spectrum of music that only a very few other musicians on this planet can be counted their equals. Corea and McLaughlin both played a crucial role in the revolutionary Miles DavisFind albums by this artist ensemble that gave us "In A Silent WayFind albums with this title" and "Bitches BrewFind albums with this title", and then continued to explore and revolutionize Jazz and Fusion, each with his own numerous ensembles. Although they have performed over the years occasionally as a duo, no formal recordings were issued of these meetings (some of their playing can be heard on the momentous McLaughlin Montreux Box Set). Therefore the forming of the Five Peace BandFind albums by this artist, initiated by Corea after his last Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist reunion tour, is a first time the two Masters play together in a regular band. Of course one immediately assumes that the band should sound as a combination of Return To Forever and Mahavishnu OrchestraFind albums by this artist, but since the early days of Fusion are long gone, Five Peace Band´s concept is completely up to date and modern. With saxophonist Kenny GarrettFind albums by this artist, bassist Christian McBrideFind albums by this artist and drummer Vinnie ColaiutaFind albums by this artist the band is an incredible music making machine, offering the listener an orgy of sound, beautiful expanded improvisations and sophisticated compositions. Most of the material was written by Corea and McLaughlin, but they also pay tribute to their former boss Miles Davis by including some of his music, with another ex-Davis band member Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist present as a guest. There is little need to recommend this album flamboyantly, as any serious music lover surely understands the magnitude of this recording. This is a dream come true and an absolutely essential piece of music!

CHICK COREA / ORIGIN ~ LIVE AT THE BLUE NOTE
STRETCH 9018 (Barcode: 013431901822) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1998 Released: 1998

Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist’s acoustic sextet OriginFind albums by this artist was formed in late 1997 by expanding his acoustic trio (Avishai CohenFind albums by this artist – bass and Adam CruzFind albums by this artist – drums) with the addition of trombonist Steve DavisFind albums by this artist and two reeds players Bob SheppardFind albums by this artist and Steve WilsonFind albums by this artist. After a brief period of rehearsals and one club performance the band was booked to play for six nights (two sets each night) at the NY Blue Note club, which was to be the band’s official premiere. All the music played at Blue Note was recorded, initially mainly for the sake of documentation, but upon listening to the results Corea decided to release this album, which presents just a taste of what happened there. A much more comprehensive recording project, capturing three entire nights (6 sets) was released as a 6 CDs set under the title “The Complete 1998 Live At The Blue Note RecordingsFind albums with this title”. Origin proved to be indeed an “origin”, a new beginning for Chick, who hasn’t led an acoustic sextet for over 20 years. It served as a perfect vehicle to develop and present a set of new compositions, which show an older and seasoned Jazz Master at work. The music is complex, somewhat dark, serious and multi-layered, requiring attentive listening. In many respects it often resembles some contemporary Classical Music influences. The players have plenty of space to develop both individual and collective extended improvisations, which of course are quite brilliant. Corea is not featured as the main soloist and steps back to become just one of the band’s members. All the music presented on this album, except for one standard, was composed by Corea, who re-examines his life’s achievements here, moving skillfully between his various musical activities, as diverse as Latin music and Free Jazz. All together this is a splendid example of modern Jazz at it’s best, with great music and excellent playing all the way. Corea’s fans don’t need any encouragement here and others should definitely investigate.

CHICK COREA / HIROMI UEHARA ~ DUET
STRETCH 230827 (Barcode: 888072308275) ~ USA ~ Jazz

We all know Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist loves playing piano duets with other pianists. The legendary recordings from 1978 with Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist are to this very day some of my all time favorite Jazz recordings. Seeing this new album, featuring acoustic piano duets with another favorite pianist of mine, Japanese prodigy Hiromi UeharaFind albums by this artist, really made my heart “jump” for a brief moment, as this was almost to good to be true. I did know these two played live together before, but a whole album and a double one at that – stupendous! The album was recorded live at the Blue Note Jazz Club in Tokyo, and includes, as Chick puts it, eloquently as always: “1 night, 2 pianos, 2 sets, 4 hands, 12 songs, 20 fingers, 176 keys, about 600 people in the audience and thousands of musical ideas exchanging between the two pianist and the audience”. It is exactly that and so much more… Regardless is the song is a standard, a piece written by Chick or by Hiromi, the two have a field day each and every time. The interplay is telepathic, the improvisations divine, the humor obvious and it all makes perfect musical sense and is so beautiful, that I had a marvelous time listening to the album twice in a row, something I almost never do usually. I hope I really don’t have to convince anybody this is superb music. Let me just state that in the last couple of years I have heard so much stupid allegations regarding Hiromi’s “commercialism”, “selling out” and other bullshit, I’m really glad that this album just blows all these baseless nonsense out of the window. Absolutely essential music for body and soul!

COLUMBIA 775150 (Barcode: 886977515026) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1969 Released: 2010

Almost every music lover on this planet is aware of the fact that this is a monumental piece of music, one of the pillars of modern Jazz Art Form and way beyond. I have lived with this music for 40 years now, since the day it was first released and I opened the gatefold double LP to place the vinyl on my record player, starting a musical journey that would last a lifetime. Now, while playing this new edition of the album, I feel the same kind of excitement and elation that always accompanies me when this music is playing. In the years that passed I´ve written extensively about Miles DavisFind albums by this artist and the "Bitches BrewFind albums with this title" album, so I won´t repeat myself. Suffice to say, that for me this is a masterpiece of extraordinary proportions, which gets better with time. I´d like however, to expand on the subject of how this edition compliments "The Complete Bitches Brew SessionsFind albums with this title" Box Set, making it clear that having just one of these two editions is simply not enough. First and foremost, this edition includes the version of the album as originally released on the double LP set 40 years ago. This particular version was elaborately edited, spliced, mixed and cooked by producer Teo MaceroFind albums by this artist, which was often dramatically different from the music actually recorded in the studio by the musicians. Regardless of the fact if one likes or agrees to what Macero did with the music, this is what the world knew as "Bitches Brew" until the appearance of the Box Set. The Box Set does not include any of these particular collages and therefore they are parallel, but far from identical. In addition, this edition includes six previously unreleased pieces of music; the first two being alternate takes from the actual sessions not included in the Box Set (which makes the "complete" part of the Box Set´s title redundant) and the other four being single edits from the album (previously unreleased on CD) – yes ColumbiaFind albums on this label did make singles for the radio from this album – imagine that! If all that is not enough, this set also includes a DVD with the Miles Davis quintet (Miles, Wayne ShorterFind albums by this artist, Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, Dave HollandFind albums by this artist and Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist) filmed in Copenhagen in November 1969 shortly after this prophetic music was recorded, which alone is worth the price of the entire set. MILES DAVIS ~ LIVE IN EUROPE 1969: THE BOOTLEG SERIES VOL.2
COLUMBIA 887254185321 (Barcode: 887254185321) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1969 Released: 2013

Although it never reached the acclaimed status of the first and second legendary Miles DavisFind albums by this artist quintets, this was in fact the third quintet, with saxophonists Wayne ShorterFind albums by this artist being the only link to the previous group and pianist Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, British bassist Dave HollandFind albums by this artist and drummer Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist being the "new boys on the block". Unfortunately, in contrasts to its importance as the interim vehicle, which served Miles during the period of his most radical transformation, this quintet never recorded in the studio, leaving behind only live recordings, most of which were never previously released and appear officially here for the first time.

After all this was the group that Miles toured with in 1969, after completing the seminal "In A Silent WayFind albums with this title" album and while he was recording the world-shattering "Bitches BrewFind albums with this title" tour de force. Shorter, Corea and Holland played on the former album and Shorter, Corea, Holland and DeJohnette played on the latter, so the links are obvious. The material herein presents two live appearances separated by a period of mere four months (July 1969 – November 1969), but musically the gap is enormous, with the earlier recording still anchored in the "In A Silent Way" mood, while the later are all "Bitches Brew" and beyond.

Miles cognoscenti will find here music, which is the closest to Free Jazz he ever played. Miles was never really part of the Free Jazz movement, going in different direction, which was his very own. But this quintet and Corea especially, were at the heart of the Free scene at the time. Corea used Holland and DeJohnette on his sublime "The Complete `Is` SessionsFind albums with this title" album, which was recorded at that exact time, and he and Holland will later form the A.R.C.Find albums by this artist trio and CircleFind albums by this artist quartet, both seminal Free Jazz ensembles. Miles gives Corea and the rest of the quintet space to stretch out, playing his parts splendidly as ever, even though it´s not exactly his "natural habitat", thus portraying him quite differently from the "iron fist" dominant leader status he was usually considered to be.

The music is sublime from start to end, completely untouched by time and filling a large gap in the recorded history of Miles Davis and his music, at its most pivotal period. The fact that we had to wait so long for this stuff to be released is beyond criminal, but as usual "better late than never" is the only solace. There are some slight sound imperfections, but considering this music was recorded live almost 45 years ago, this is completely meaningless. The DVD is sensational as well, both the audio and video contents, and constitutes a highly important document of the Miles Davis saga.

Of course this is an absolute must in any serious Miles Davis collection and hats off to ColumbiaFind albums on this label for keeping this legacy alive, even if the do it for the money. Brilliant stuff!

Three additional tracks originate from an earlier Miles Davis sextet performance at Fillmore West on April 11, 1970, recorded just a few days after Columbia released "Bitches BrewFind albums with this title" (on March 30, 1970), which changed the face of music forever.

The sextet and septet were the post-"Bitches Brew" working groups, which featured saxophonist Steve GrossmanFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and Keith JarrettFind albums by this artist (in the septet only, first double keyboards group by Miles), bassist Dave HollandFind albums by this artist, drummer Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist and percussionist Airto MoreiraFind albums by this artist. Except for Grossman and Jarrett all the other musicians took part in the recording of "Bitches Brew".

The music is of course a direct follow up to the studio versions of these tunes and Davis makes no attempt to "ease up" or compromise the music and its intrinsic freedom and improvised nature, even though the Fillmore venues were at the time the Mecca and Medina of American Rock. Davis considered his music to be an integral part of the revolutionary wave of music created at the time, typically ignoring ridiculous genre divisions, and the audiences seem to share his attitude wholeheartedly.

Live recordings are always the best opportunity to check out the authenticity and integrity of musicians and these recordings are a great proof of the fact that the "Bitches Brew" magic really happened in the studio as a result of superb playing and visionary leadership, rather than post-production work by Teo MaceroFind albums by this artist. The overall level of the individual performances is of course incredibly high and inspired, full of intensity and virtuosic mastery.

Although the Fillmore West tracks suffer from some sound quality plight, this music is an absolute must to all Miles Davis fans. The four consecutive nights at Fillmore East present a similar set list, but the actual performances are so dramatically different that listening to them opens up a whole new way of comprehending the music of Miles Davis and understanding the concept of Jazz and its unique nature.

Four and a half decades later this music still kicks ass as only very few other sound sculptures are able to, and hopefully will continue to do so in the decades to come. Spearheading the Golden Decade, Miles Davis justifies his Godly status in full.

MILES DAVIS ~ THE COMPLETE IN A SILENT WAY SESSIONS
COLUMBIA 90921 ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1968 - 1969

This is the 5th chapter in the ColumbiaFind albums on this label’s epic series of Miles DavisFind albums by this artist Box Sets, which is a monumental reissue project of recordings by the most important Jazz musician of the 20th century. This set presents the complete sessions which originally resulted in the In A Silent WayFind albums with this title album. The material was recorded over a 6 months period (September 1968 through February 1969) and clearly shows the new direction Miles was shifting into, after his legendary second Quintet was expanded and a new circle of musicians was selected by the Master to take with him the journey into the (then) unknown territory (Joe ZawinulFind albums by this artist on keyboards, John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist on guitar, Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist on electric piano and Dave HollandFind albums by this artist on bass). Tony WilliamsFind albums by this artist on drums, Wayne ShorterFind albums by this artist on sax and Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist on electric piano stayed from the second Quintet and also play on these sessions, which means that Miles used three keyboards players simultaniously in some takes. The music is much more spacey, atmospheric and further removed from the strict Jazz format, clearly pointing towards the Fusion explosion, which was to errupt on Bitches BrewFind albums with this title - the next revolutionary album. This is some of the best music ever created on this planet and absolutely essential!

MILES DAVIS ~ THE COMPLETE JACK JOHNSON SESSIONS
COLUMBIA 86359 ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1970

This is the 7th chapter in the ColumbiaFind albums on this label’s epic series of Miles DavisFind albums by this artist Box Sets, which is a monumental reissue project of recordings by the most important Jazz musician of the 20th century. Recorded between February and June 1970 this monumental document defines “Electric Jazz” – anything recorded since, be it Jazz, Rock or Fusion, has its roots here. These almost five hours of music remained mostly unreleased till this set was issued, as the original A Tribute To Jack JohnsonFind albums with this title album contained less than 10 % of the music included herein. Although a few other “cooked” albums included snippets of this music (Live-EvilFind albums with this title, Get Up With ItFind albums with this title, DirectionsFind albums with this title and Big FunFind albums with this title) they were never available in their full form. By the time this material was recorded Miles’ approach to creating music changed dramatically: he was more of a captain giving the crew a general direction as to where he wanted to go, ratter that a navigator concerned with the exact details as to the course taken. An enormous amount of freedom was granted to the stellar collection of participants (Keith JarrettFind albums by this artist, Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist, Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist – keyboards, Steve GrossmanFind albums by this artist, Bennie MaupinFind albums by this artist, Wayne ShorterFind albums by this artist – saxes, Dave HollandFind albums by this artist, Ron CarterFind albums by this artist, Michael HendersonFind albums by this artist – bass, John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist, Sonny SharrockFind albums by this artist – guitar, Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist, Gene PerlaFind albums by this artist – drums, Airto MoreiraFind albums by this artist, Hermeto PascoalFind albums by this artist – percussion) and for the first time Miles promoted John McLaughlin to be the primary soloist, much more dominant than his trumpet. McLaughlin of course was up to the job and presents some incredible guitar playing, firmly establishing the electric guitar as the leading instrument in instrumental music for the years to come. His fearless ventures into the uncharted territory of Fusion and even Rock would become a beacon for generations of guitar players, a source of inspiration and a vital learning tool. The unrestrained, almost jam-like atmosphere of the sessions inspired all the participants to search for the best they could achieve and the resulting music is simply phenomenal. This is visionary and groundbreaking, Promethean and pioneering musical creation, an absolute must to any Jazz fan that takes his music seriously..
A special note to collectors:
The initial release of all the Miles Davis Box Sets in this reissue series is packaged in an exquisite metal-bound (except chapter 5 which is cardboard-bound) frame housed in a hard cardboard CD-sized slipcase (except for chapters 1 & 8 which have a metal slipcase). Once the initial release is sold out, the CDs are repackaged in a tall-box digipack book format. Naturally the tall-box issues have a much lower retail price tag. All the initial release CD-sized issues become priceless collectors’ items in time.

MILES DAVIS ~ THE COMPLETE ON THE CORNER SESSIONS
COLUMBIA 06239 (Barcode: 886970623926) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1972 - 1975 Released: 2007

This is the 8th (and apparently the last) chapter in the ColumbiaFind albums on this label’s epic series of Miles DavisFind albums by this artist Box Sets, which is a monumental reissue project of recordings by the most important Jazz musician of the 20th century. Recorded between March 1972 and May 1975 this the music includes everything Miles recorded for Columbia before his 5 years of retirement from recording due to health problems, before resuming his career in 1980. The inventory is pretty amazing: 4 years, 16 sessions, 21 musicians and over 6 hours of groundbreaking music, which although rarely given credit for it, changed to face of music for years to come. Incorporating Funk, Fusion, World Music, Rock, Soul and of course Jazz, this music re-defined the basic conceptions of the musical universe. Anything recorded later on this planed could be traced back to some extent to these sounds, be it Hip-Hop, Rock, Electronic and Ambient Music, House, and Dance, including of course contemporary Jazz and Fusion. The music is completely groove oriented, with very little (and often without) melody, with a loose and completely atmospheric jamming over a repetitive and hypnotic rhythms, created masterly by bassist Michael HendersonFind albums by this artist, continuing the direction initiated on The Cellar Door Sessions 1970Find albums with this title. Miles on trumpet, Dave LiebmanFind albums by this artist, Carlos GarnettFind albums by this artist and Bennie MaupinFind albums by this artist on saxes, Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist on keyboards, John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist, Reggie LucasFind albums by this artist and Pete CoseyFind albums by this artist on guitars, Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist and Al FosterFind albums by this artist on drums and quite a few other players contribute to this heavenly music, under the Master’s spiritual leadership. The music included here appeared in various edited forms on the albums: On The CornerFind albums with this title, Big FunFind albums with this title and Get Up With ItFind albums with this title, but most is heard here for the first time. It is almost impossible to describe how far out and pioneering this music is. It presents not only a completely new sound and approach to performing music, but also a new way to create music as a flow of the subconscious creative process. Over 30 years after it was recorded, it still sounds revolutionary and poignant, as it undoubtedly will continue to sound in the days to come. I can’t imagine anybody who calls himself a music lover not to own this music and listen to it periodically to recharge his or her emotional batteries. Beyond essential!

PACO DE LUCIA / JOHN MCLAUGHLIN ~ PACO AND JOHN – LIVE AT MONTREUX 1987
EAR MUSIC 4029759132035 (Barcode: 4029759132035) ~ SPAIN ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1987 Released: 2016

This is a 2CD live album documenting the 1987 appearance by the guitar duo of Spanish guitar virtuoso Paco De LuciaFind albums by this artist and British guitar wizard John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist at the Montreux Jazz Festival. The two recorded a couple of revolutionary guitar trio albums in the early 1980s together wit American guitarist Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist, which achieved worldwide acclaim and were superb examples of the Jazz-World Music Fusion. Almost a decade after the concert captured here (in 1996) the trio reunited to record their final album together. The album presents nine tracks (one a medley of two compositions), two solo (one each) and then seven duo performances, which include original compositions by De Lucia and McLaughlin, a Jazz standard, and one composition each by Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and Egberto GismontiFind albums by this artist. The music is excellently recorded and allows all the subtle nuances of the two guitars to be heard perfectly.

The music and the performances are of course Godly by any standard, as these two musicians are perfectly bonded not only by their sublime talents but also a deep personal friendship and affinity. After years of playing together they created a wonderful amalgam of their individual playing styles and idiosyncrasies, which separately are almost unbridgeable, into a perfect unity. The music bridges genres and styles, cultural influences and playing techniques, which of course is quite common today but was less obvious at the time.

It is important to understand that this music goes far beyond showing off individual talents, and is first and foremost and attempt to bring people together. It is also completely universal and although obviously immediately appealing to lovers of the guitar, in is able to penetrate the heart of every true music connoisseur. The passing time made it vividly clear that this music is absolutely timeless and should be cherished forever!

AL DI MEOLA ~ CIELO E TERRA / SOARING THROUGH A DREAM / TIRAMI SU
BGO 0879 (Barcode: 5017261208798) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1985 - 1987 Released: 2009

Guitarist / composer Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist is a brilliant example of a musician, who never stands still and keeps changing and improving in time, rather than hanging on to the fame and success achieved in a distant past. A superb Master of his instrument, Di Meola´s journey through music is an epic story beginning in the early 1970s in the epicenter of the then exploding Fusion movement as a member of Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist´s Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist, and continuing with a long succession of solo recordings, which is now in its 4th decade.

This brilliant reissue covers the transitional period in Di Meola´s career in the mid-1980s, when he was moving away from Fusion deeper and deeper into his own unique niche, which combines Jazz and World Music, creating some of the most beautiful music imaginable. Included here are all three albums Di Meola recorded for the ManhattanFind albums on this label Records label, which clearly show his transition as well as the gradual switch to acoustic guitar. Although quite different from each other, the logical development is clearly omnipresent and quite fascinating.

The three albums were recorded in three different settings: the first is a duet, the second a quintet and the last a septet, with some superb musicians taking part: the great Brazilian percussionist Airto MoreiraFind albums by this artist, drummer Danny GottliebFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Kei AkagiFind albums by this artist, bassist Harvey SwartzFind albums by this artist, percussionist Mino CineluFind albums by this artist and other distinguished players. Almost all of the music included here was composed by Di Meola, with just a few exceptions, all of it brilliant and moving. This is the stuff that makes listening to music a real pleasure, brilliant, intelligent, emotional and everlasting. A must!

AL DI MEOLA ~ CONSEQUENCE OF CHAOS
TELARC 83649 (Barcode: 089408364921) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2006 Released: 2006

There are quite a few parallels between guitar Masters Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist and John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist. Each has a very unique and personal style of course, but both alternate between the electric and acoustic version of their instrument and both ventured deeply into wold music influences (Di Meola absorbing Flamenco and Tango and McLaughlin exploring Indian music) during their extensive careers, returning to the Jazz-Rock Fusion (which was their Alma Matter) periodically. And of course they recorded together several times. This album takes Di Meola back to his roots, which are of course his work with Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist’s Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist. Returning to his electric guitar and with Chick as guest (playing some fiery solos), the atmosphere is reminiscent of the RTF hay days. All the superb participating musicians (Steve GaddFind albums by this artist – drums, John PatitucciFind albums by this artist – bass, Barry MilesFind albums by this artist – keyboards and others) perform beautifully and the music (written entirely by Di Meola) flows with grace and elegance. Although strong world music influences are still present, the Fusion sound is predominant and unmistakable. It is heartwarming to see that Di Meola manages to produce such a consistently excellent music over the years, for which he deserves praise and respect. The usual TelarcFind albums on this label exquisite sound quality is an additional factor making this a truly excellent album. Highly recommended!

AL DI MEOLA ~ ELEGANT GYPSY & MORE - LIVE
EAR MUSIC 4029759122494 (Barcode: 4029759122494) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2017 Released: 2018

This is a live album by American guitar hero Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist, recorded during his 2017 US tour, on which he was supported by a splendid group of musicians, which included keyboardist Phil MagallanesFind albums by this artist, percussionist Gumbi OrtizFind albums by this artist, bassist Elias TonaFind albums by this artist, drummer Luis AliceaFind albums by this artist and violinist Evan GarrFind albums by this artist. Keyboardist Philippe SaisseFind albums by this artist replaces Magallanes on three tracks. The album presents ten tracks, seven of which were composed by Di Meola, one is by Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, another one is by Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist and finally one is a surprising gesture towards Led ZeppelinFind albums by this artist. The recording quality and sound are a bit loud, but appropriate for the energy that prevailed on stage.

As the title suggests, Di Meola revisits three tracks from his 2nd solo album “Elegant GypsyFind albums with this title”, one from the “Kiss My AxeFind albums with this title” album and the rest reflect the entire span of his long career, including his stint with Corea, his fascination with Piazzolla and his early Rock influences. All the compositions have been rearranged and “upgraded” to contemporary sound and speeded up to contemporary steroidal tempi.

All the musicians are of course superb performers and Di Meola lost nothing of his phenomenal abilities and virtuosity, so the album becomes a nice nostalgic trip down memory lane and a showcase of spine-chilling guitar pyrotechnics, which should keep Di Meola’s fans utterly happy.

Overall, this is an excellent live recording of the Jazz-Rock Fusion chapter of Di Meola’s splendid chapter. Personally I much prefer his laid-back, acoustic Jazz-World Fusion recordings, which are absolutely stunning, but of course it is very difficult not to enjoy this facet of his career, which brought him to the world’s attention at the first place.

AL DI MEOLA ~ FLESH ON FLESH
TELARC 83543 (Barcode: 089408354328) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2002 Released: 2002

Ever since Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist’s early days as a member of Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist’s Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist (with whom he recorded three splendid albums in the mid-1970s: Where Have I Known You BeforeFind albums with this title, No MysteryFind albums with this title and Romantic WarriorFind albums with this title) and then as a solo recording artist since 1976, his output has been consistently excellent. This remarkable career now stretches over 4 decades and Al seems to be going as strong as ever. A master of both the electric and the acoustic guitar, Di Meola refined his style over the years. Finesse and delicacy, replaced the youthful zest and energy, as demonstrated on his early albums by his guitar pyrotechnics. The love of Fusion was expanded and enriched by love of World Music, which presents an infinite source of inspiration. The 1990s saw Di Meola getting involved extensively with World Music, when he formed his group called World Sinfonia (with some of the best musicians from all over the world) and recorded a tribute to the great Argentinean composer Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist. In 1998 Di Meola signed with the excellent TelarcFind albums on this label label, famous for it’s superb sound recording quality, and this is his 4th release on that label. As usual the music is a tasty mixture of fiery Fusion and elegant World Music. Di Meola switches between the acoustic and electric guitar according the mood of the music. Also as usual, he includes some distinguished guests to play along with, this time the legendary Cuban keyboards player Gonzalo RubalcabaFind albums by this artist (who adds some of his own fire to the proceedings) and veteran bass virtuoso Anthony JacksonFind albums by this artist, who played with Di Meola on his early Fusion albums. Although Di Meola usually writes all the music on his albums, this time a Chick Corea composition was also included to celebrate the Di Meola / Jackson reunion. All together another triumphant achievement for Al and a superb musical experience. Most warmly recommended.

AL DI MEOLA ~ SPLENDIDO HOTEL / ELECTRIC RENDEZVOUS
BGO 0927 (Barcode: 5017261209276) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1980 - 1982 Released: 2010

This is a reissue / remaster of the 4th and 5th studio albums by American guitarist / composer Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist: “Splendido HotelFind albums with this title” from 1980 and “Electric RendezvousFind albums with this title” from 1982, released on ColumbiaFind albums on this label Records. He is supported by his regular band at the time with keyboardist Philippe SaisseFind albums by this artist, bassist Tim LandersFind albums by this artist, drummer Robbie GonzalesFind albums by this artist and percussionist Eddie ColonFind albums by this artist. Many guest artists appear on these albums, including pianist Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Jan HammerFind albums by this artist, bassist Anthony JacksonFind albums by this artist, drummer Steve GaddFind albums by this artist, guitarist Paco De LuciaFind albums by this artist, percussionist Mingo LewisFind albums by this artist and others. “Splendido Hotel”, originally a 2LP album, presents eleven tracks, seven composed by De Meola, one co-composed with Saisse, one by Saisse, one by Corea and one a pop standard. “Electric Rendezvous” presents eight tracks, five composed by Di Meola, and one each by Saisse, Hammer and Lewis.

The music is the usual splendid mixture of superb melodies, Jazz licks, Fusion Groove and Spanish / Latin / Mediterranean / Flamenco Folkloristic accents, which was De Meola’s home turf. There is plenty of brilliant guitar playing by Di Meola and excellent parts by the guest artists, and although these two albums are not surprising or innovative as far as Di Meola’s output in the first decade of his career is concerned, they withstand the test of time splendidly and still sound great today.

Overall, this is a marvelous reminder of the early days of Di Meola’s recording career, full of virtuosity, superb compositions and passionate performances by him and his cohorts, which were the leading American Fusion musicians at the time. They are a must in any serious Jazz-Rock Fusion / Jazz-World Fusion record collection.

AXEL DONNER ~ AXEL DONNER QUARTETT
EDEL CONTENT 4029759082941 (Barcode: 4029759082941) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1987 Released: 2012

This is a reissue (first time on CD) of an album by the East German pianist / composer Axel DonnerFind albums by this artist, recorded with his quartet which also included saxophonist Thomas KlemmFind albums by this artist, bassist Wolfgang MusickFind albums by this artist and drummer Dieter EhrhardtFind albums by this artist. On three tracks the quartet is expanded to a sextet with the inclusion of trumpeter Joachim HesseFind albums by this artist and percussionist Mario WurzebesserFind albums by this artist. The album presents six original compositions, all by Donner.

The music is a very melodic modern Jazz, well within the mainstream idiom, and with dominant Afro-Cuban rhythmic patterns. Very well composed and perfectly executed, this album proves that East German Jazz was not only about Avant-Garde and mainstream and even traditional Jazz existed and thrived there as well.

Donner is an excellent musician, who plays perfectly well in diverse stylistic situations, always fluent and interesting. Klemm is also an excellent soloist, capable of playing melody lines and fierce improvisations at the same level of professionalism. Musick pays some very hot licks on the electric fretless bass and Wurzebesser drives the music relentlessly ahead. In some respect this album is similar to Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist´s Latin Jazz period, but it presents an individual approach and great original compositions.

Fans of melodic, Latin oriented modern Jazz will find this album to be one of the best one can get in that particular niche. Of course the music lost nothing of its vitality and excellence over time and sounds really very inviting today. It´s great to see it available again!

Side Note: As all the East European countries under the Socialist regime, East Germany, or DDR as it was known at the time, had only one state owned and controlled Music Company, which released most of its productions on the AmigaFind albums on this label label. Among the many Amiga releases the legendary "orange J" series was dedicated to Jazz recordings, many of which were licenses from the West, but others were original productions, mostly of Jazz made in DDR. Some of these releases, like the one described above, were absolute gems.

Following the unification of Germany, the Amiga albums disappeared from the face of the earth and only in 2012 a German label reissued 15 Amiga Jazz albums on CD. They are all worth checking out!

JOE FARRELL ~ ORIGINAL ALBUM CLASSICS
SONY 888750636829 (Barcode: 888750636829) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1970 - 1975 Released: 2015

This Box Set collects five of the six albums recorded by brilliant American flautist / saxophonist / composer Joe FarrellFind albums by this artist and released between 1970 and 1975 on the legendary CTIFind albums on this label Records label. They are: his debut as a leader and first album "Joe Farrell QuartetFind albums with this title", the second "OutbackFind albums with this title", the fourth "Penny ArcadeFind albums with this title", the fifth "Upon This RockFind albums with this title" and the sixth "Canned FunkFind albums with this title". His third album "Moon GermsFind albums with this title" was separately reissued on CD in 2001 by SonyFind albums on this label. Farrell joined the first incarnation of Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist in 1972 and took part in the recording of their first two legendary albums. The music presented on these five albums falls quite neatly into two separate categories: the first two albums are complex modern Jazz / Jazz-Rock Fusion and even include some Free Form moments, whereas the next three albums are Groove / Funk oriented.

The first album ("Joe Farrell Quartet") is especially noteworthy, as it is one of the most important and beautiful documents of the era. Farrell´s quartet, which also included pianist Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, Bassist Dave HollandFind albums by this artist and drummer Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist (all from Miles DavisFind albums by this artist electric band) is augmented by the presence of guitarist John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist on two tracks, turning the resulting quintet into a mighty power of Nature. It is worthwhile to compare these tracks with McLaughlin´s debut album "ExtrapolationFind albums with this title" or the Jack BruceFind albums by this artist album "Things We LikeFind albums with this title", which also features McLaughlin. Together these three a.m. albums contain some of the most important and powerful music ever made.

The second album places Farrell alongside Corea again, but this time with bassist Buster WilliamsFind albums by this artist and legendary drummer Elvin JonesFind albums by this artist, with whom Farrell recorded a series of superb albums for the Blue NoteFind albums on this label label between 1968 and 1971. It presents superb modern Jazz and Fusion, played by Masters of the trade. Together with the third album ("Moon Germs"), which is not present in this Box Set, which features Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist on piano, Stanley ClarkeFind albums by this artist on bass and again Jack DeJohnette on drums, and of course his numerous recordings as a sideman, Farrell established his position as one of the leading figures on the US scene.

The remaining three albums document the transition Farrell made from modern Jazz / Fusion into Jazz-Funk, which is characterized by more emphasis on melodic content and Funk / Groove rhythmic patterns. Although many of Farrell´s fans had a hard time getting used to this new musical direction, his work in that genre was always top notch, with impeccable musicianship and wonderful compositions. He cooperated with several top players specializing in that specific area, like guitarist Joe BeckFind albums by this artist, bassist Herb BushlerFind albums by this artist and others. In retrospect these albums are classics of the genre, sound superbly fresh today and honestly had very little true competition by anybody else over the years.

Farrell, who sadly died in 1986, aged just 48, was definitely an exceptional player and composer, who contributed immensely to American Jazz by constantly searching for new way of expression, ignoring genre constrains and mainstream thinking. This Box Set is an essential listening to every Jazz / Fusion fan on this planet.
Side Note
The "Original Album SeriesFind albums with this title" by Warner Bros.Find albums on this label, the "Original Album ClassicsFind albums with this title" by SonyFind albums on this label, the "5 Original AlbumsFind albums with this title" by UniversalFind albums on this label, the Box Sets by RhinoFind albums on this label and other similar releases are an archetypal example of how good intentions turn sour. Although these new editions often bring back to life some of the best music ever made on this planet, which in many cases has been lost in the tides of time and was unavailable on the market for ages, they suffer from an unforgivable disregard for the essence of cultural values and general sloppiness, contrary to human decency, which requires as to treat our Cultural Legacy with respect and loyalty.

The Box Sets produced under these monikers have no discographical information whatsoever about the lineups, musician names, composers, lyricists, dates and places of recording, original release data and even basic copyright data (the last is strictly illegal BTW). Although the original LP sleeves are reproduced, they are often edited and information (which would be in most cases too small to be readable) is removed. Most importantly these Box Sets don't include any booklet offering a historical background and perspective about the Artists and the Music, which are extremely important and vital to the preservation of our Culture and passing the knowledge to the next generations.

In short the fact that these Box Sets are meant to be inexpensive, does not mean that they have to be cheap. Considering the fact how many times this music has been sold over and over again by the labels, this is a crying shame!

Among the artists appearing on these albums are: keyboardists Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and Bob JamesFind albums by this artist, drummers Steve GaddFind albums by this artist and Peter ErskineFind albums by this artist, guitarists Eric GaleFind albums by this artist and Steve KhanFind albums by this artist, saxophonists David SanbornFind albums by this artist and Joe FarrellFind albums by this artist, trumpeters Marvin StammFind albums by this artist and Jon FaddisFind albums by this artist and many others.

The music is a mixture of original compositions by Ferguson and the composer / arranger Jay ChattawayFind albums by this artist, Jazz standards, film themes, popular songs and Classical pieces, all superbly arranged and executed by the Big Band / Orchestra, with soaring solos by Ferguson the guest stars. Although definitely on the lighter side of the Jazz spectrum, mixing Jazz with Funk, Rock and even Reggae, the music was always tasteful and impeccably executed.

Ferguson´s piercing trumpet sound is still one of the most recognizable sounds in American Jazz and remains unparalleled to this very day.

Personally I have always found the music of Ferguson to be both highly entertaining and artistically relevant, offering classy performances with stand the test of time with ease. Highly recommended!

BÉLA FLECK / MARCUS ROBERTS ~ ACROSS THE IMAGINARY DIVIDE
ROUNDER 011661914223 (Barcode: 011661914223) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2011 Released: 2012

This is another banjo / Jazz piano album by the undeniable king of banjo Béla FleckFind albums by this artist and the excellent Jazz pianist / composer Marcus RobertsFind albums by this artist. However, there are quite a few differences between this recording and the meeting between Fleck and pianist Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, which resulted in "The EnchantmentFind albums with this title" album recorded five years earlier. The meeting with Corea was a duo recording, whereas here Flack plays with the Marcus Roberts trio, with bassist Rodney JordanFind albums by this artist and drummer Jason MarsalisFind albums by this artist.

The album includes twelve original instrumental pieces, five of which were composed by Fleck, six by Roberts and one is co-composed by both of them. The music is difficult to characterize, as it is definitely neither Jazz nor Bluegrass, although of course it has touches of both. The presence of a piano trio naturally has strong Jazz connotations, but those remain only in the background. Overall this album lacks the excitement and spark present on the Corea / Fleck recording, but of course considering the incredible level of talent involved it certainly has its moments.

It is quite possible that the musicians intended to achieve exactly this vaudeville / early 20th Century entertainment feel, which somehow is being transmitted herein. Excellently played it nevertheless remains pure entertainment never actually crossing the thin line dividing entertainment and art. But it is definitely first rate entertainment, which many people will surely enjoy immensely.

STAN GETZ ~ THE COMPLETE COLUMBIA ALBUMS COLLECTION
SONY 886978805829 (Barcode: 886978805829) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1972 - 1979 Released: 2011

With a career spanning half a century American saxophonist Stan GetzFind albums by this artist became one of the undying Jazz icons, making many milestone contributions to the development of the Jazz art form. He was probably one of the most versatile Jazz figures, associated with such diverse Jazz genres as Bebop, Cool, Bossa Nova and Jazz-Rock Fusion. His extensive recorded legacy includes many classic Jazz albums, which are considered timeless and are listened to today.

Getz´s most popular albums are those recorded during his stint with the VerveFind albums on this label label (1951–1972), but his albums recorded for and released on ColumbiaFind albums on this label in the 1970s, although criminally less known, are in fact some of his best ever and surely constitute the most diverse output created by one artist in a period of just several years, probably due to the complete artistic freedom and self-production rights he was awarded by Columbia. A total of seven albums were released on Columbia, spanning a wide artistic spectrum and all absolutely brilliant.

The set opens with the marvelous "Captain MarvelFind albums with this title" album, recorded with pianist Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist (who wrote almost all the music on that album), bassist Stanley ClarkeFind albums by this artist, drummer Tony WilliamsFind albums by this artist and percussionist Airto MoreiraFind albums by this artist. This album was recorded just a month after the recording of the debut eponymous album by the newly founded Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist. It included some of the music already recorded on that debut album and other music included later on the second Return To Forever album called "Light As A FeatherFind albums with this title". This is definitely one of the most memorable early Fusion recordings.

Next comes the reunion between Getz and the Brazilian guitarist / composer Joao GilbertoFind albums by this artist ("The Best Of Two WorldsFind albums with this title"), returning to the Jazz / Bossa Nova style, which a decade earlier pushed Getz to the center of fame and popularity as a result of the commercial and artistic success of legendary early Getz / Gilberto albums.

Then there is the beautiful collaboration with the legendary vocalist / pianist / composer Jimmie RowlesFind albums by this artist ("The PeacocksFind albums with this title"), a straight-forward quartet date ("The MasterFind albums with this title"), another great Fusion album ("Another WorldFind albums with this title") with keyboardist Andy LaverneFind albums by this artist, an album of Lalo ShifrinFind albums by this artist´s compositions ("Children Of The WorldFind albums with this title") and finally a soundtrack album ("Forest EyesFind albums with this title") recorded in Holland with excellent Dutch musicians.

The Box Set also includes a bonus CD comprising of live recordings by Getz, compiled from different albums and informative liner notes. All albums are remastered and include bonus tracks. Together this is one of the most fascinating collections of music, simply exploding with musical genius and incredible performances. It is an essential document of what intelligent and open minded music is all about and an essential part of the Jazz legacy. Not to be missed under any circumstances!

HERBIE HANCOCK ~ THE COMPLETE COLUMBIA ALBUM COLLECTION 1972-1988
SONY 886977240829 (Barcode: 886977240829) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1972 - 1988 Released: 2013

This monumental Box Set (31 albums, 3 of which are double CDs) presents the recording legacy of American keyboardist / composer / bandleader Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist during his most productive and groundbreaking two decades, in which his albums were released by ColumbiaFind albums on this label (and SonyFind albums on this label in Japan). Columbia was Hancock´s third record label; his initial recording career (1962-1969) was spent with the legendary Blue NoteFind albums on this label label, where he recorded a series of brilliant and pioneering albums as a leader and dozens of albums as a sideman, many of which are considered as part of the canon of Jazz recordings. After a short period of recording for the Warner Bros.Find albums on this label label (1969-1972) he signed with Columbia, which was quite natural considering that Hancock was a member of the second legendary Miles DavisFind albums by this artist quintet (1963-1969) and took part in many projects Davis led after the quintet disbanded, all of which were recorded for Columbia. Several of the albums in this box, which were originally released only in Japan, make their appearance outside of Japan for the first time.

The content of this Box Set emphasizes the incredible musical versatility and truly chameleonic nature of Hancock as an Artist. He plays in many settings, from solo keyboards, duos (with Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist for example), trios (with Ron CarterFind albums by this artist and Tony WilliamsFind albums by this artist) and ensembles like the pioneering Jazz-Funk Headhunters or the incredible V.S.O.P.Find albums by this artist quintet, which followed in the steps of the second Miles Davis quintet, with trumpeter Freddie HubbardFind albums by this artist replacing Davis and the rest of the players being the original quintet members. It also shows Hancock as a composer of soundtracks ("Death Wish" and "Round Midnight") and his affiliation with World Music.

Musically the box covers an incredibly wide cross-genre musical plateau, covering such varied areas as modern Mainstream, Jazz-Rock Fusion, Jazz-Funk Fusion, Jazz-Soul Fusion, electronic and ambient music, orchestral music, Jazz-Classical Fusion and any other. Hancock´s exceptional talent as a composer is exposed here in the fullest and confirms his status as one of the most influential and revolutionary Jazz musician ever. His skills as a player are of course completely unparalleled and have served as a model for generations of young musicians all over the world.

It wouldn´t be an exaggeration to state that this box contains some of the most important Jazz recordings made to date and as a legacy its value is absolutely priceless and unique. It is of course worth every penny of this reasonably priced and beautifully packaged Box Set, even if one owns some of these albums separately already. Grab the box and give the older versions to your friends; they will surely be grateful and thank you.

This is an absolutely essential piece of Jazz history, music history and human Cultural legacy, which is way beyond recommendation. Simply a must!

JOE HENDERSON ~ MIRROR MIRROR
MPS 4029759113478 (Barcode: 4029759113478) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1980 Released: 2016

This is a reissue of an album by American saxophonist / composer Joe HendersonFind albums by this artist, which was his only album for MPSFind albums on this label and which was produced by the legendary Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist. Henderson is supported by a wonderful team of top American Jazz musicians: pianist Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, bassist Ron CarterFind albums by this artist and drummer Billy HigginsFind albums by this artist. The quartet performs six tunes, five of which are original compositions: two each by Corea (including the title tune) and Carter and one by Henderson and the remaining one is a standard.

The music is a perfect document of Henderson at his artistic peak, playing his heart out with his usual virtuosity. Although basically a mainstream Bebop album, there are many moments on this album where the quartet moves into less restrained area, with Henderson´s expanded solos being among his strongest in his career.

Corea fans will find him playing acoustic piano brilliantly, as usual in his case, also exploring the Free territory occasionally, as he so often did during his career. Carter and Higgins play amicably all the way through and of course their vast experience and talent are felt very strongly.

Overall this is a neglected gem, which Jazz lovers simply should have in their collections. Perfect execution, superb sound quality and a piece of Jazz history; one simply can´t ask for anything more than this. This album is little known to American Jazz fans since it was released only in Germany and this reissue is a great opportunity to close a gap in a record collection!

In 1983 the MPS catalog was sold to UniversalFind albums on this label, which sadly resulted in all those artistic treasures to almost disappear from the face of the earth – a situation not only tragic but culturally criminal. Universal reissued a part of the MPS albums (probably 128 titles) on CD between 1999 and 2011 under the "Most Perfect Sound Edition" moniker.

Since 2008 the German Promising MusicFind albums on this label label released some of the MPS recordings, but at a very slow pace.

In 2014 the German company Edel AG bought the MPS catalogue from Universal and released a series of 25 MPS albums on CD with a new slipcase graphic design, which brought all those excellent albums back to life. In 2015 Edel AG started to record and release new albums under the MPS moniker. In 2016 Edel AG released a series of 10 classic MPS albums on CD, which were beautifully remastered and re-packaged, presenting the original artwork and liner notes, as well as new liner notes and photographs. An obvious labor of love, these reissues are what the MPS catalogue truly deserves. This project was continued in 2017 with another series of 10 classic MPS albums released on CD. In later years some new reissues were released sporadically.

Over the years many SABA / MPS albums were reissued in Japan, which is often the only available source for these albums today, but that is a story in itself.

KRZYSZTOF HERDZIN ~ LIVE IN TYGMONT
ALLEGRO 011 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2004 Released: 2006

This album presents a live recording captured at the Warsaw´s Tygmont club by pianist / composer Krzysztof HerdzinFind albums by this artist and his trio, with bassist Zbigniew WegehauptFind albums by this artist and drummer Cezary KonradFind albums by this artist. The trio performs six compositions, four of which are originals by the leader and two are standards. The recording has a beautiful realistically captured live sound and an overall superb sound quality.

People familiar with the Polish Jazz scene are surely aware of the fact that Herdzin is one of the busiest and most versatile musicians in the country, who left his mark on a large scale of different musical projects in Contemporary Classical music, Jazz and Popular music. His work as an arranger / orchestrator marks most of the great Pop albums recorded in the last two decades in Poland. Sometimes it seems as if there is hardly anything happening in Polish music, which does not involve Herdzin one way or another. Of course such omnipresence can be dangerous and lead to spreading the talents thin, but one must admit that everything Herdzin touches turns out well, which simply proves his incredible talent, versatility, stamina, perseverance and above all professionalism.

To be fair one must remember that this album presents just one aspect of Herdzin´s activity, i.e. his work as a leader of a classic Jazz piano trio. During his career Herdzin recorded several albums in this format, and I must admit this is the favorite one for me. There are several reasons why I feel that way; firstly the material included herein presents a wide emotional range, from up-tempo numbers presenting Herdzin as a virtuoso pianist performing neck-breaking solos and up to deeply contemplative ballads, where the listener can hear Herdzin the atmospheric painter. Secondly the trio work, which is absolutely stunning, is a superb example of creative cooperation in real time, which after all is what Jazz is all about. The dazzling displays of piano bravura are brilliantly supported at all times by the rhythm section, which at the time of the recording was probably the best in the country. My deeply lamented personal friend Zbigniew Wegehaupt, who left us at a ridiculous young age a year ago, was undoubtedly one of the greatest bassists to emerge on the local scene and drummer Cezary Konrad, with whom Herdzin works often, is probably to top drummer of the second Jazz generation in Poland.

This is a classic piano trio album in every respect, which should satisfy even the sternest and most capricious Jazz connoisseurs. Regardless if your champion is Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, Bill EvansFind albums by this artist or Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist, you will find something here, which is of course first and foremost Herdzin´s statement, but sits firmly in the same state of mind that these great Masters bestowed upon us. A timeless jewel!

JAZZ CITY CHOIR ~ JAZZ CITY CHOIR
AMI 001 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 2012 Released: 2012

This is the excellent debut album by Polish vocal ensemble Jazz City ChoirFind albums by this artist, which comprises of nine female and male vocalists singing together arrangements of Jazz compositions in a new and unprecedented way. Although vocal Jazz ensembles, usually quartets, have a longstanding tradition in Jazz, and even in their native Poland (the superb NOVIFind albums by this artist quartet), there were very few attempts to take Jazz vocals to the full extent of choir level, like this one. Listeners familiar with this particular niche might remember the work of Singers UnlimitedFind albums by this artist, which also used a choir effect, but it was achieved by multi-tracking the four members of the ensemble, whereas here we have a genuine choir at hand.

The album presents six compositions, four of which are Jazz standards arranged by Pawel ZielakFind albums by this artist, the choir´s house arranger, and two compositions created especially for the choir, one by its soprano singer Joanna KucharczykFind albums by this artist and another by composer Jan SanejkoFind albums by this artist, a young and very talented person worth watching!. Five of the six compositions feature a lead soloist, which in four cases is the choir´s music director and conductor Anna GadtFind albums by this artist and in one case the wonderful Polish singer Grzegorz KarnasFind albums by this artist. Five of the compositions feature vocalese only and one – Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist´s "Spain" – features partly lyrics, written by Al JarreauFind albums by this artist and sung in English.

The initial impact of this album is completely overwhelming; the power, complexity and inherent beauty of human voices harmonizing and building up multi-layered structures, multiplied by ten individual sound signatures, is breathtaking. Of course in time the initial shock gives way to a more articulate reception, but moving on into the music the stimulation of brain cells continues up to the moment when the very last sound resonates into silence. This is really something else…

Of course a detached and coolheaded analysis reveals certain problems and imperfections, most serious of which is the dichotomy between the musical devices (in this case choral devices) used by the choir, which almost all originate in the world of Classical Music or even earlier musical forms like Medieval chants or early Church music. The transition of these devices into the world of Jazz has puzzled many composers / performers over the years, with varying results. Nevertheless, Jazz City Choir manages to swing at all times, which after all is the basic quality one expects from anything under the Jazz umbrella, even if their tools and paraphernalia originate in another world. Using lyrics, and especially in English, was a completely unnecessary move, exposing their weakest link, but considering it is a minor part of the entire presentation, it can be easily forgiven and hopefully forgotten.

Overall this is a stunning debut and the thought what these people might come up with next is scary (in a positive way). I simply can´t wait! It´s an absolute most for anybody fond of vocal Jazz in all forms and shapes and of course for connoisseurs of the Jazz-Classical Fusion sub-genre. Respect!

JAZZ Q ~ ELEGIE (ELEGY) (EXPANDED EDITION)
GAD 045 (Barcode: 5901549197594) ~ CZECHOSLOVAKIA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1975 - 1976 Released: 2016

This is a reissue of the 4th album by the legendary Czechoslovak Jazz-Rock Fusion band Jazz QFind albums by this artist, led by keyboardist / composer Martin KratochvilFind albums by this artist, which also included guitarist Frantisek FranclFind albums by this artist, bassist Premysl FauknerFind albums by this artist and drummer Libor LaunFind albums by this artist. Several guest musicians also participated on selected tracks. The original album comprised of eight original compositions, all by Kratochvil, which are presented here in their remastered form on the first CD of the 2CD set. The second CD collects live recordings by the group, which were previously released on two festival compilations, a couple of radio recordings, which are previously unreleased and fourteen tracks which were recorded as a soundtrack to the movie entitled "Hriste", all also previously unreleased.

This album is undoubtedly one of the best Jazz-Rock Fusion albums ever recorded, not only behind the Iron Curtain, but worldwide. It offers the essence of the most advanced Fusion "spirit", which reached its apogee in the mid 1970s, defined by recordings by Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist (Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist), John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist (Mahavishnu OrchestraFind albums by this artist), Joe ZawinulFind albums by this artist (Weather ReportFind albums by this artist) and of course countless lesser known musicians, who contributed to the genre´s rapid development. Kratochvil and his Jazz Q ensemble managed to distill the Fusion elements and incorporate them within European aesthetics, which resulted in a much calmer and more lyrical form. Based on beautiful melodic themes, with solid harmonic structures and sophisticated expanded suite-like structures, this music is as good as Fusion ever got in its lifespan, with most of what has been offered under the genre´s banner later on was a sad imitation of the past.

Kratochvil´s brilliant compositions, combined with his virtuosic keyboards technique and deep musical sensitivity and elegance, are simply irresistible. Supported by an excellent team of band members and guests, each of whom contributed his own layer to the final result, he was able to create a masterpiece, which has a few rivals to this day and sound as good today as it did at the time it was released. It is definitely one of the most well aging Fusion albums out there.

The bonus material on this album is every step as good as the original album and offers a wonderful opportunity to get better and deeper acquainted with Kratochvil and his band at the time. The diversity and richness of his compositions is fully exposed here, and the fact that this music is finally available for us to enjoy is a miracle in every sense.

This album is an absolute must to every Fusion fan on this planet (and perhaps beyond), especially since at the time of its release most music fans living on the West side of the Iron Curtain were completely oblivious as to what was happening on the East side. Now is the time to finally discover what was missed. Essential stuff!

JAZZ Q ~ SYMBIOSIS (EXPANDED EDITION)
GAD 170 (Barcode: 5903068121999) ~ CZECHOSLOVAKIA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1973 - 1975 Released: 2021

This is a reissue of the 3rd album by Czechoslovak Jazz-Rock Fusion band Jazz QFind albums by this artist, led by keyboardist / composer Martin KratochvilFind albums by this artist, originally released in 1974. The lineup that recorded this album includes also guitarist Frantisek FranclFind albums by this artist, bassist Vladimir PadrunekFind albums by this artist, drummer Michal VrbovecFind albums by this artist and British vocalist Joan DugganFind albums by this artist, as well as several guests on selected tracks. The original album, which is included here on the first CD, presented five tracks, one of which lasts over sixteen minutes, two composed by Padrunek and three by Kratochvil. This expanded edition includes also a second CD with twelve bonus tracks, recorded between 1973 and 1975, all composed by Kratochvil, originating from radio recordings and club appearances, mostly previously unreleased. As usual with GADFind albums on this label releases, the album includes informative in-depth (bi-lingual) liner notes, photographs and detailed information about dates and places of recording.

With the change of the guitar player and addition of a vocalist, the music of Jazz Q expanded to include some Blues-Rock elements in addition to the Fusion elements that characterized the band from its conception. Duggan was a sole native English language female vocalist behind the Iron Curtain, which gave the band immediately a “Western” aura, so desired by all East European bands. Francl was obviously a brilliant guitar player with a deep feel for both Blues and Fusion and combined with Kratochvil’s brilliant compositions, Jazz Q were simply unstoppable. Fusion fans should find the track “Toledo” (on the bonus CD) especially fascinating, as it was recorded three years before Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist’s “My Spanish HeartFind albums with this title”, but sounds as if taken from that album.

The music is absolutely timeless and amalgamates many influences, both the obvious ones like Jazz, Rock and Blues, but also subtle Folk and Classical music accents (see the Orchestral pieces on the bonus CD). Combined with the superb musicianship found here, this album is a true gem from start to finish. The fact that this music had no chance to reach listeners in Western Europe at the time is a travesty, which can now be easily rectified.

Overall, this is obviously one of the best East European albums recorded at the time, and although it is almost fifty years old, it sounds absolutely fresh and exciting. As usual, hats off to GAD Records for bringing this treasure back to life and expanding it with additional brilliant music, which deserves to be heard and should not be forgotten. No decent Fusion record collection is complete without this album in it. Absolutely essential!

Recorded: 1973 Released: 2016

Trumpeter / composer / bandleader Mike KoskinenFind albums by this artist was one of the most prominent figures on the Finnish Jazz scene in the early to mid 1970s, involved in a wide rage of stylistic explorations, from Free Jazz to more conventional post Bebop. He was one of the first Finnish Jazz musicians to study at the Berklee College of Music. He released his debut album "SunwebsFind albums with this title" on 1976 and moved to the US a year later.

This live radio broadcast presents Koskinen leading two ensembles, an octet and a big orchestra, which include the crème de la crème of the Finnish Jazz scene at the time: trombonists Mircea StanFind albums by this artist, Petri JuutilainenFind albums by this artist and Raimo NaatanenFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Kaj BacklundFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Juhani AaltonenFind albums by this artist, Paroni PaakkunainenFind albums by this artist, Pentti LahtiFind albums by this artist, Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist and Teemu SalminenFind albums by this artist, pianist Olli AhvenlahtiFind albums by this artist, guitarist Otto BergerFind albums by this artist, bassists Teppo Hauta-AhoFind albums by this artist and Heikki VirtanenFind albums by this artist, drummer Edward VesalaFind albums by this artist and percussionist Ari ValtonenFind albums by this artist.

They perform five compositions (three by the octet and two by the orchestra) four of which are original compositions by Koskinen and one is an arrangement of a Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist tune. The music portrays the diversity of Koskinen musical interests, with almost straightforward Jazz pieces and Free / Improvised orchestral experimentations, which are the more challenging and in retrospect interesting.

Composer / arranger / bandleader / trumpeter Otto DonnerFind albums by this artist is one of the Godfathers of Finnish Jazz and one of the greatest European Jazz composers. His ensemble Otto Donner TreatmentFind albums by this artist changed lineups according to specific project requirements and the large orchestral lineup caught on this live radio broadcast is sadly not fully known, but includes trumpeter Markku JohanssonFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Christer BoustedFind albums by this artist, Juhani Aaltonen (who also plays flute) and Paroni Paakkunainen, pianist Esko LinnavalliFind albums by this artist and others.

They perform four original compositions by Donner, which feature Bousted and Aaltonen as the primary soloists. The music is absolutely delightful and reflects Donner´s talents as composer and arranger, as well as the incredible level of musicianship by his band members. As everything else recorded by Donner, this is a first class musical gem.

Overall this is some of the most staggering music created in Europe in the early to mid 1970s that one is able to hear and for European Jazz connoisseurs this is an absolute must have!
Side Note
The Finnish independent label SvartFind albums on this label Records released an unprecedented series of albums called Pop Liisa and Jazz Liisa, which present priceless historical recordings of Finnish Rock, Progressive Rock, Jazz-Rock Fusion and Jazz music, recorded live and broadcasted from the Liisankatu Studios in Helsinki under the "Popstudio" and "Jazzstudio" monikers between 1972 and 1977. The studios were owned by the YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company), a public broadcasting service, which not only allowed the burgeoning Finnish music scene at the time to be exposed but also carefully archived the recordings for future generations. All this incredible music was previously unissued and collectively is probably the most important document of Finnish music from that period ever assembled.

The music was released on 36 LPs (Pop Liisa Vol. 01 to Vol. 18 and Jazz Liisa Vol. 01 to Vol. 18) and on 18 CDs with every two consecutive volumes combined on one CD.

The sound quality is absolutely superb, often better than the sound quality on the LPs released by these artists at the time. Many of the groups appearing on these albums never managed to record an album and these recordings are the only recorded legacy in existence of their activity. The released are accompanied by well researched and intelligent liner notes.

This archival project is an outstanding example of how Cultural Legacy should be treated as well as of exemplary dedication to record producing professionalism.

LEEMEET TRIO ~ THE FIRST ENTRANCE TO THE GARDEN
RECART 0013 (Barcode: 5908285287121) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2013 Released: 2014

This is the debut album by the Polish Jazz piano trio, called LeeMeet TrioFind albums by this artist, led by young pianist / composer Liliana KostrzewaFind albums by this artist, with bassist Pawel GrzesiukFind albums by this artist and drummer Radek WoskoFind albums by this artist. The album consists of eight tracks, five of which are originals by Kostrzewa, one is a standard, one a folk tune and the remaining one is an arrangement of a Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist tune.

The music is a pretty straight-forward mainstream effort, melodic and well organized, and holding no surprises or unexpected twists. The bassist plays electric bass, which sets the entire sound of the trio astray from the classic piano trio sound. The original compositions are nice, but somewhat simplistic, and hesitant, but considering this is a debut effort at least Kostrzewa plays her own material rather than playing standards.

Technically the performances suffer from minor imperfections, like a poor balance between the instruments, with the piano being often dominated by the rhythm section and synch problems between the players. Kostrzewa has a very delicate touch and her playing the piano requires a much softer and compassionate rhythmic support. Her technical repertoire is also still underdeveloped, but she does show a lot of potential and surely will get better in time.

Overall not a bed debut, which hopefully is just a first step of a long and successful career for everybody involved.

PIOTR MATUSIK ~ INDEPENDENCE
SOLITON 688 (Barcode: 5901571096889) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2019 Released: 2020

This is the second album by young Polish Jazz pianist / composer Piotr MatusikFind albums by this artist recorded in a piano trio setting with bassist Alan WykpiszFind albums by this artist and drummer Patryk DoboszFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine original compositions, all by Matusik.

Matusik debuted about five years earlier with an album dedicated to the music of Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, which I sternly criticized at the time. In the meantime his career developed well as a member of the quartet led by violinist Bartosz DworakFind albums by this artist and participation in occasional other recordings and his music matured over time, as this album, which should be really considered as his artistic debut, clearly proves.

His compositions offer melody based themes, which are laced wit the typical Polish Jazz melancholy and the execution is open enough to allow space for extended improvisations by all three musicians. The intimate piano trio format is perfect to expose the excellent interplay between the musicians, which is the strongest virtue of this album.

As usual in a piano trio setting, Matusik is the prime soloist, performing lengthy piano parts, superbly supported by the rhythm section. It is however Wykpisz, who offers a truly refined musicianship on this album, with wonderful solo parts and sublimely sensitive accompaniment behind the piano. Dobosz is also excellent, keeping the time precisely and inventively, using a versatile arsenal of percussive trickery.

Overall this is an ambitious effort, which shows a clear step forward in Matusik´s development. Jazz trio piano enthusiasts should find this album an educational experience as far as the role of the rhythm section is concerned. Definitely worth investigation!

PIOTR MATUSIK ~ TRIBUTE TO CHICK COREA
REGIO 602547470744 (Barcode: 602547470744) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2014 Released: 2015

This is the debut album by young Polish Jazz pianist / composer Piotr MatusikFind albums by this artist, and as the title suggests it is dedicated to the music of Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, featuring six Corea classic compositions. The album was recorded in a quartet setting, which includes also saxophonist Jakub ChojnackiFind albums by this artist, bassist Dariusz ZiolekFind albums by this artist and drummer Adam BuczekFind albums by this artist.

Obviously it´s not difficult to understand why a young and aspiring pianist would choose Chick Corea as his role model; after all Corea is one of the greatest and most revered Jazz musicians in all times and a brilliant, often visionary pianist / composer. However, recording an album consisting entirely of Chick Corea´s compositions as a young pianist´s debut album is a hazardous and honestly a questionable decision. It takes years of experience to understand and than tackle the complexity and depth of Corea´s compositions, way beyond the sheer ability to play them.

The easiest way to look at it would be to compare each of the compositions featured on this album with the original initial versions of the same compositions as recorded by Corea himself. The album starts with "Now He Sings, Now He SobsFind albums with this title" from the album by the same name recorded by Corea in March 1968, shortly before he started playing with Miles DavisFind albums by this artist. It was recorded by a trio with Miroslav VitousFind albums by this artist on bass and Roy HaynesFind albums by this artist on drums and marked the beginning of Corea´s most Avant Garde, adventurous and experimental period. At the time of its release the album was completely revolutionary, original and groundbreaking. Now the version of the same composition heard on this album sounds like lounge Smooth Jazz, easy on the ear and of course completely trivializing the original music, which hardly goes well with the "tribute" intention. A similar analysis of all the rest of the album reveals sadly more or less a similar pattern.

Let´s get something straight here: these four musicians can play well, even exceptionally well. They are schooled and trained and they know their notes and chords and harmonies. And yet it all comes to nothing as far as creative, ambitious music making is concerned. This album is a terrible mistake, a waste of energy and a lack of direction. Playing someone else´s music in a watered down version is definitely not a way to go by a young and aspiring musician.

Of course the future is still very much ahead of these musicians, and anything can happen. It is my duty to point them in a right direction, even if this is a seemingly cruel and painful way to do it. Better luck next time.

BOBBY MCFERRIN ~ 5 ORIGINAL ALBUMS
BLUE NOTE 600753769812 (Barcode: 600753769812) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1986 - 2002 Released: 2018

This Box Set collects reissues of five albums by the legendary American Jazz vocalist / composer Bobby McFerrinFind albums by this artist, originally released on the Blue NoteFind albums on this label label between 1986 and 2002. They are: “Spontaneous InventionsFind albums with this title” (1986), “Simple PleasuresFind albums with this title” (1988), “Medicine MusicFind albums with this title” (1990), “Bang!ZoomFind albums with this title” (1995) and “Beyond WordsFind albums with this title” (2002).

The first three albums are almost entirely solo vocals recordings, on which McFerrin showcases his extraordinary technique and unlimited artistic imagination. There is a minimal instrumental accompaniment on selected tracks, but most of the music is created by McFerrin’s vocal cords and his “body percussion”. The resulting music is entirely groundbreaking and absolutely magical.

The two later albums are more “conventional” (if such word is applicable at all when talking about McFerrin), presenting the vocalist supported by some of the best Jazz musicians out there, including keyboardist Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, drummer Omar HakimFind albums by this artist, bassist Jimmy HaslipFind albums by this artist and many others.

Except for a few interpretations of music by other authors, all the music is composed and arranged by McFerrin, presenting his amazing skills as songwriter / composer / arranger.

McFerrin is undoubtedly the greatest male Jazz vocalist of all time and one of the most creative, versatile and open-minded musical personalities ever on the American scene. His extensive and superbly diverse recorded legacy presents the full picture of his achievements so far, and one can never expect what else he will come up with next.

He is also one of the nicest human beings I have ever had the opportunity to meet in person, which is of course not less important than his musical genius. Definitely a “Don’t worry, be happy” person, but also an exceptionally gifted human being.

This music is of course beyond recommendation…

EMARCY 801075 (Barcode: 602498010754) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 2003 Released: 2003

John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist is not only the world’s finest guitar player, but surely also the most versatile one. Throughout his illustrious career he played almost in every conceivable jazz-related genre between free jazz, Jazz-Rock Fusion, mainstream jazz, Jazz-World Fusion and so on. This gorgeous album opens yet another area for his musical achievements – the marriage of classical music and jazz or Jazz-Classical Fusion. The contents of the album can be divided into two parts. First comes a title piece – a splendid suite for acoustic guitar and orchestra (over 26 minutes long in 3 parts), which presents McLaughlin accompanied by the Deutsche KammerphilharmonieFind albums by this artist (with Renato RivoltaFind albums by this artist conducting). The music shows McLaughlin’s skills as a composer of contemporary music, based on the European romantic tradition. It is passionate and elegant, as one might expect from McLaughlin and quite a revelation for many of his admirers. The second part of the album consists of four jazz standards performed here in a very special guitar arrangement with McLaughlin accompanied by guitar based classical Aighetta Quartet. As these four standards have been mostly associated with legendary jazz pianist (Bill EvansFind albums by this artist, Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist, Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and Gonzalo RubalcabaFind albums by this artist) McLaughlin presents them as homage to these jazz Giants. This is a very personal album, delicate and subtle, requiring a most attentive listening and deserving repetitive exploration. Essential musical experience!

VOCALLION 8493 (Barcode: 765387849320) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1979 Released: 2012

This is a wonderful reissue of two albums recorded in 1979 and originally released on the legendary HarvestFind albums on this label label, EMIFind albums on this label´s progressive imprint, which present the Funk side of the British Jazz-Rock scene at the time. Keyboardist Max MiddletonFind albums by this artist and guitarist Robert AhwaiFind albums by this artist, who are present on both these albums, were among the movers and shakers of the British Jazz-Funk in late 1970s and 1980s, proving that American-born Funk penetrated deep the seemingly cold British character and mixed with Jazz roots created some mighty fine music.

"Another SleeperFind albums with this title" is the only album by a group co-led by Middleton and Ahwai and it features eight original compositions, six by Middleton and two by Ahwai. The group also includes bassist Kuma HaradaFind albums by this artist, drummer Richard BaileyFind albums by this artist, percussionist Darryl Lee QueFind albums by this artist, a brass section and background vocalists. The music is mostly Jazzy and the Funk element is expressed by what the rhythm section players do in the background. Middleton, a superb keyboardist and improviser, plays some great licks here, which often sound like Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist´s work with Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist. In retrospect this albums sounds definitely as something deserving more attention that it ever achieved at the time of its release.

"Cape WrathFind albums with this title" is the second album by the group co-led by saxophonist Dick MorrisseyFind albums by this artist and guitarist Jim MullenFind albums by this artist, which was Britain´s most revered Jazz-Rock-Funk ensemble at the time. On this album the other members of the band are four musicians playing on "Another Sleeper": Middleton, Ahwai, Harada and Bailey and percussionist Tony CarrFind albums by this artist. They play eight pieces, five of which are original compositions, two each by Middleton and Mullen and one by Morrissey, two are Jazz standards and one is an arrangement of a Pop song. The level of the musicianship here is truly excellent and the album is great fun to listen to after all these years.

Beautifully remastered by Michael J. DuttonFind albums by this artist this reissue offers great glimpses of the past glory of the British Jazz-Rock-Funk, a rather less frequently re-visited chapter in the British Jazz history, but one that has quite a few surprises to offer, when an effort is made. Definitely worth investigating for listeners who enjoy the "lighter" side of Jazz, which at its best can be as good as the "serious" side of the music.

This is an archival live recording by the Brazilian Jazz “Royal Couple” of percussionist / drummer / vocalist / bandleader Airto MoreiraFind albums by this artist and his wife singer / songwriter Flora PurimFind albums by this artist. The music was recorded in a tight quintet format with bassist Gary BrownFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Helio AlvesFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Widor SantiagoFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven lengthy tracks, two of which are well known pieces associated with the couple’s stint in the Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist group led by Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist. The album offers exceptional sound quality, especially for a live recording.

With four Brazilian musicians on board, the music offers a brilliant Jazz-World Fusion tribute to Brazilian sources. Two of the tracks are trio performances, four others are full quintet performances with Purim on vocals and one is a solo piece by Airto.

Alves proves to be a brilliant pianist, truly shining in the over twenty minutes long rendition of “La Fiesta”, but his performances on all the tracks is nothing short of phenomenal. Another RTF piece “Light As A Feather” also gets a fourteen minutes’ treatment, which causes goosebumps to appear on every listener’s skin, probably even in case of deaf persons.

Although Airto and Flora recorded several live albums together, this is undoubtedly their absolute best, in every respect – the exceptional material, brilliant performances and sublime sound just all fall together perfectly.

Overall, this is a surprising reminder of how great Airto / Flora and their cohorts sounded live, which of course I have experienced in person many times, but never heard on records in such glorious manifestation. For the couple’s many fans, this is an absolute must have, a sublime mixture of Jazz and Brazilian music, which sound still absolutely gorgeous, now thirty-three years later.

This was the last recording by Farrell, who died prematurely in 1986 at the ridiculous age of forty-eight, and the album is dedicated to him. The album offers a spectacular sound quality.

Moreira, Purim and Farrell were the core members of first incarnation of Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist’s group Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist, which recorded the two seminal albums in 1972 / 1973, the eponymous “Return To ForeverFind albums with this title” and “Light As A FeatherFind albums with this title”. The music on this album is a strong reminder of these two albums, and although it is criminally little known, it certainly deserves to stand in the same quality class.

The music offers a wonderful amalgam of Brazilian / Latin rhythms and melodies, with a strong Jazzy tinge, splendidly performed by the entire crew. The last track, dedicated to John Coltrane, is particularly interesting and features absolutely stunning performance by Farrell.

Overall, fans of Jazz-World Fusion with Brazilian flavoring should love this album, as all other recordings by Moreira, Purim and Farrell, together and separately. The Brazilian pair are absolute geniuses as far as mixing the Brazilian elements with Jazz is concerned.

This is a reissue of the debut album by Czechoslovak Jazz quartet NaimaFind albums by this artist, which comprised of keyboardist Zdenek ZdenekFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Frantisek KopFind albums by this artist, bassist Jaromir HonzakFind albums by this artist and drummer Martin SulcFind albums by this artist. The album presents six original compositions, all composed by Zdenek except one co-composed by him and Honzak, recorded in 1985. These tracks were released as the debut LP only in 1988. This reissue adds three additional tracks, also composed by Zdenek, recorded in 1986 and produced by my great friend Antonin MatznerFind albums by this artist (now sadly departed), released originally in 1986 (before the debut album was released) as part of a Various Artists compilation. One of these tracks features violinist Martin ZbrozekFind albums by this artist.

All the music is beautifully remastered and the album comes with extensive liner notes, extremely well researched and full of discographical information, sadly only in Czech language (which works fine for me, but probably less so for other enthusiasts who also might be interested).

The group´s name originates of course from the title of the John ColtraneFind albums by this artist composition, suggested by Kop, who was a dedicated Coltrane follower. In the years that followed Naima released three more albums, following some lineup changes.

The music is all melody based, offering mostly ballads, and quite typical of the 1980s European mainstream Jazz, with clear connections to the Jazz tradition but with an updated attitude and sound-wise often close to the European Fusion. The compositions are all well structured and prove that the second generation of the Czech Jazz scene was well versed in the Jazz idiom.

The performances are also all excellent, especially those by Kop, who offers brilliant soprano and tenor saxophone soli, which drive the music forward. Zdenek plays fluent piano and synthesizer parts, technically perfect but a bit over-influenced by Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist´s style. Honzak, a great bassist, adds the pulse, and only Sulc suffers from being way too low in the mix making his contributions hardy audible. Overall this album is a great listening experience, accessible to a wide audience, which still sounds great today.

For fans of European Jazz and its history, reissues of this kind are an absolute must, and the fact that this music is available on CD for the first time makes it a wonderful treasure. Brilliant stuff!

My personal thanks to Jaromir KratochvilFind albums by this artist, the owner of Indies Happy TrailsFind albums on this label, for his friendship and the incredible job he is doing to keep this music alive!
Side Note
Since the 1950s Czechoslovakia had a highly developed Jazz scene, certainly in proportion to its population, which included many successful ensembles and even Big Bands, as well as Jazz clubs, festivals and publications, all this in spite of state censorship and political limitations. The similar situation existed since the 1960s as far as Rock (including Progressive Rock and Jazz-Rock Fusion) was concerned, resulting in many excellent, interesting and innovative ensembles.

The music was relatively well documented by the three state owned record labels: SupraphonFind albums on this label (founded in 1927), PantonFind albums on this label (founded in 1968) and OpusFind albums on this label (founded in 1971 and based in Bratislava, created on the base of Slovak division of Supraphon). Following the "Velvet Revolution" in 1989, the state owned record labels were privatized, with Supraphon dominating the local market.

However, Supraphon was quite reluctant as far as exploring its vast back catalogue is concerned, and this is where the small independent Indies Happy TrailsFind albums on this label Records, a reissue label dedicated to the preservation of the recorded legacy of Czechoslovak music, owned and run by the devoted enthusiast / historian Jaromir KratochvilFind albums by this artist, founded in 2007, comes in. Over the years the label released a plethora of brilliant music, reissuing long deleted LPs and extensively exploring the archives in search of bonus material.

The quest of Indies Happy Trails is similar to what the GADFind albums on this label Records label, run by Michal WilczynskiFind albums by this artist, is doing for Polish music, with similar consistency and praiseworthy dedication.

LELO NAZARIO ~ AFRICASIAMERICA
EDITIO PRINCEPS 10 (Barcode: 7898901556107) ~ BRAZIL ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2006 Released: 2006

5th album by Brazilian keyboards player Lelo NazarioFind albums by this artist, one of the pioneers of Brazilian jazz and fusion. As the album’s title suggests, Nazario combines rhythmic influences from a variety of ethnic sources into his jazz / fusion compositions, often creating polyrhythmic backgrounds for his beautiful compositions. The album follows the path set by Nazario’s previous album and although recorded eight years later, it is a natural follow up to the approach developed earlier. He is a superb instrumentalist and even more importantly an amazing composer, always full of surprises and able to create a wide range of emotions in his music. Surrounded and supported by the most talented players on the contemporary Brazilian jazz / fusion scene (Teco CardosoFind albums by this artist – flute and saxes, Felipe AvilaFind albums by this artist – guitar and others) Nazario manages to reach the highest levels of expression for his music. I particularly enjoyed his performances on the electric piano, which remind me fondly of Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist’s glory days with Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist. This is a great example of how great jazz / fusion music is created outside of the commonly accepted path set mostly by US players. Most warmly recommended and an assured eye (ear) opener!

ALON NECHUSHTAN ~ WORLDS BEYOND
BUCKYBALL 024 (Barcode: 697855002428) ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2010 Released: 2010

New album by Israeli (resident in NY) pianist Alon NechushtanFind albums by this artist, this time in a trio setting with bassist Francois MoutinFind albums by this artist and drummer Dan WeissFind albums by this artist, which presents nine brilliant compositions by the leader and an exceptional performance by the trio. Nechushtan is of course fondly remembered for his fantastic work with the TalatFind albums by this artist quintet ("The GrowlFind albums with this title" on TzadikFind albums on this label Records), which to this day is one of my favorite albums of the last decade. This album is completely different from his work with Talat, which combined Jazz and Klezmer / Hasidic music, and presents superb modern Jazz unrelated to any particular ethnic references. Nechushtan again shines both as a composer, with his tunes sounding like instant classics, which could have been composed by the likes of Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist or Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist, and as player, displaying dazzling technique and sensitivity. His supporting team is also brilliant all the way, with Moutin doing some incredible stuff with his bass (don´t try this at home) and Weiss beating the hell out of the drum kit, but always right on the beat. Overall this is a great album, immensely enjoyable and deeply moving emotionally. I can´t imagine any true Jazz fan not falling in love with this album instantly, and therefore I recommend it wholeheartedly. A true must!

MILOSZ OLENIECKI ~ SONGS FOR A
SOLTAN ART GROUP 021 (Barcode: 5904433795029) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2019 Released: 2021

This is the debut album as a leader by young Polish Jazz pianist / composer Milosz OlenieckiFind albums by this artist, recorded in a classic piano trio setting with bassist Pawel Zwierzynski-PioroFind albums by this artist and drummer Rafal DutkiewiczFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven original compositions, all by the leader.

The music is all based on wonderful, highly interesting and quite “different” compositions, which manage to escape the traps of typical Polish melancholy, stunning with their diversity and cleverness. They are well based in Polish Folklore, but often touch upon contemporary Classical “trickery” with uneven rhythmic patterns and even Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist’s Spanish licks, all being unmistakably Jazzy all the way. I must say that it’s been quite a while since I have heard so much originality on a Polish Jazz debut, which means that this is definitely one of the best albums landing on my desk (or in my ears) this year.

Oleniecki is also a very interesting pianist, again quite different from his colleagues, who concentrates on the delivery of his compositions rather than on playing endless arpeggios and showing off the speed of his fingers. This results on an idiosynchratic, almost minimalist at times, delivery, which leaves a lot to the listener’s imagination, rather than overloading his sensory perception.

Although I am aware of two albums Oleniecki took part in before this recording, both completely different, I am not aware of any recordings by the members of the rhythm section, who contribute magnificently to the success of this album with their highly sensitive, as well as technically proficient performances. This means that the local scene has a lot of talent still waiting to be discovered.

Overall, this a stunning and highly unusual debut album, which deserves all the attention it can get, as it certainly offers some new vistas on the rather conformist lately Polish Jazz scene, raising a hope that not all is lost despite the pandemic and other plagues. Hats off are in order and a lot of wishes for the future – please don’t keep us in suspense for too long. Brilliant stuff!

BARTLOMIEJ OLES ~ CAT`S SONGS - 17 HAIKU FOR PIANO
AUDIO CAVE 2023/016 (Barcode: 5908298549780) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 2023 Released: 2023

This is a rather surprising album by Polish Jazz drummer / composer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist, which presents seventeen short pieces for solo piano, composed by Oles and performed by pianist Mira OpalinskaFind albums by this artist, appropriately called Haiku, referring to the Japanese poetry tradition of short poems containing seventeen phonetic units (5-7-5 syllables). The album is the first recording of music composed by Oles, on which he does not take part as a performer.

The minimalist music is very melodic and despite its format limitations it is also very expressive. As Oles mentions in the album’s liner notes, there is a certain delicate wink in the direction of Eric SatieFind albums by this artist’s solo piano pieces, although he also mentions Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist’s “Children`s SongsFind albums with this title” album as a source of inspiration.

This music is very distant to what Oles and his twin brother, bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist are usually associated with, which of course is Jazz and Improvised Music. The decision to record this album marks a new path in the personal development of his career and is also quite a bold step, which might raise some eyebrows among his usual listeners. Courage and artistic integrity are characteristics I always support wholeheartedly, which of course I do also now.

Overall, this is an excellent collection of solo piano pieces, beautifully played and splendidly recorded, which should satisfy every music lover, regardless of stylistic preferences. This music is naked and completely lacking pretentiousness or pose, it simply is…

PETE OXLEY / NICOLAS MEIER ~ TRAVELS TO THE WEST
MGP 008 (Barcode: 5060237700123) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2011 Released: 2012

This is the debut album by the fabulous guitar duo comprising of British guitarist / composer Pete OxleyFind albums by this artist and Swiss (resident in UK) guitarist / composer Nicolas MeierFind albums by this artist. The album, recorded live during the duo´s 2011 tour, presents ten compositions, three originals each by Oxley and Meier, two pieces by Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and one each by Pat MethenyFind albums by this artist and Milton NascimentoFind albums by this artist. In spite of the technical problems involved with recording this delicate music live, the resulting album has a wonderful sound quality.

Readers interested in more detailed analysis of the music by Oxley and Meier and cordially invited to read my reviews of their albums: "Chasing TalesFind albums with this title" and "The Colours Of TimeFind albums with this title". Suffice to say that the duo presents the ultimate experience in virtuosity, elegance, good taste and human teamwork of the highest caliber and this album is every bit as good as those that followed.

Presenting a wide rage of stylistic influences, the duo already at this early stage of their work together displayed superb intelligence and sensitivity. Mixing Jazz with World Music influences they created their own individual sound, by using a plethora of different guitars, each with its unique sound idiosyncrasies. As a result they managed to amalgamate a highly effective approach to the listener, making their music simply irresistible.

If you don´t have any of their albums, this one is a great place to start, and if you do have others, but not this one, grab it as soon as possible, since your record collection is not complete without it!

BUCKY PIZZARELLI / JOHN, PIZZARELLI ~ LIVE AT THE VINEYARD THEATRE

AMG Review: This 1987 concert at New York´s Vineyard Theatre pairs two fine guitarists, Bucky PizzarelliFind albums by this artist and his equally talented son, John PizzarelliFind albums by this artist. The two players fit effortlessly hand in glove, no matter who is soloing at a given time, as they work their way through classic standards ("Three Little Words"), jazz classics ("Do Nothin´ Till You Hear From Me"), pop favorites ("Route 66"), and creative medleys (such as the combination of the famous movement from Rodrigo´s "Guitar Concerto" with Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist´s "Spain"). John Pizzarelli also adds warm vocals to several tracks. Concert and recording producer Richard SudhalterFind albums by this artist also contributed the enlightening liner notes, most of which is a transcript of a compilation of interviews done with both musicians at the time of the performance and some eight years later. With the CD cover declaring it to be a limited edition, it is well worth making a high-priority purchase.

The album presents eleven tracks, a mixture of original songs by Purim, Airto and Meek, some Brazilian songs, two Jazz compositions by Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and McCoy TynerFind albums by this artist and one standard.

The music is the usual mixture of Jazz and Brazilian spicing, which is an irresistible, intoxicating magic for every true Jazz lover. This album is closer to Jazz than most other albums Purim recorded earlier, which although excellent, were somewhat more Pop oriented. I personally fell in love with Flora’s singing since the day I heard her sing with Chick Corea in 1972.

She is accompanied by a great team of musicians, who swing beautifully, providing the ideal accompaniment to Purim’s warm, sensual voice. In many respects this is probably the purest Jazz recording in her discography and features some of her best original material.

Overall, this is a marvelous vocal Jazz album by one of my most loved singers, who never recorded a bad album in her life. Her recorded legacy offers many fabulous albums, all of which are definitely worth visiting, and she is one of the most important Jazz-World Fusion innovators.

PRZEMYSLAW RAMINIAK ~ LOCOMOTIVE
SOLITON 417 (Barcode: 5901571094175) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2014 Released: 2015

This is the first album by Polish Jazz pianist / composer Przemyslaw RaminiakFind albums by this artist, following his departure from the seminal Polish piano trio RGGFind albums by this artist, of which he was a founding member. The album was recorded in a quartet setting and features also saxophonist Jakub SkowronskiFind albums by this artist, bassist Bartosz KuczFind albums by this artist and American drummer Frank ParkerFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight original compositions, seven composed by Raminiak and one co-composed by him with Skowronski.

Musically the album presents a complete about face as far as Raminiak´s role with RGG is concerned. No more long, contemplative, lyrical and almost free form ambient explorations, but straightforward melodic mainstream, almost smooth Jazz, energetic, vigorous, funky, groovy and danceable. Although at the first moment this can be quite shocking to some of Raminiak´s fans, there is basically nothing wrong with changing one´s approach, even dramatically. If Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist can do it, why can´t Przemyslaw Raminiak do it as well?

This is very immediate music and yet it has many virtues: the melodies are all first-class, the arrangements are slick and professional and the performances are brilliant in that particular milieu. Raminiak plays acoustic and electric piano and a few synthesizers, always with flair and spotless technique, which of course is not surprising. Skowronski is a big surprise with his smooth phrasing and superb melodiousness. The rhythm section plays pretty solid background timekeeping stuff, with beautiful fretless bass playing a few nice solos and drums staying respectfully in the background, as appropriate for this setting. In short this whole thing works like a dream, delivering pleasant, nontrivial and highly satisfactory music, which is a lot of fun to listen to.

Of course Raminiak will be accused of "selling out" and playing rubbish by Polish "music critics", but honestly most of them secretly enjoy this music very much and are simply embarrassed to admit it. As far as fellow musicians are concerned most of them wish they could come up with an album like this one themselves.

So here it comes again people: this is a great album for what it is, straightforward uncomplicated good music. We can´t eat the same food all the time and we can´t listen to the same music all the time – this is definitely a nice alternative, mostly for those who know it all.

RETURN TO FOREVER ~ THE MOTHERSHIP RETURNS
EAR MUSIC 4029759135654 (Barcode: 4029759135654) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2011 Released: 2012

This is a 2CD live album documenting the 2011 tour of the legendary American Fusion band Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist, which for this occasion was expanded to a quintet and included in addition to the three veteran members: keyboardist Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, bassist Stanley ClarkeFind albums by this artist and drummer Lenny WhiteFind albums by this artist also guitarist Frank GambaleFind albums by this artist and French violinist Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine tracks, several including a medley of two tunes, mostly composed by Corea, but including also material by Clarke, White and Ponty. Although recorded live the album offers an excellent sound quality.

There are no surprises whatsoever as far as the music is concerned, since the material includes mostly familiar "hits", which RTF originally recorded a long time ago and performed countless times live since. There was no ambition here to offer new material or change anything in the "golden" formula, which proved to be successful in the past. Even the presence of Ponty, who although also deeply rooted in the Fusion idiom, is stylistically somewhat different due to his European ancestry, makes no difference and proves that he was completely Americanized to fit the pattern of RTF. Gambale shows some unique moments, but again he completely fits the bill.

Having said that, one has of course to remember that these are some of the most revered Fusion pros around and they can play like a dream, which they do all the way, soloing extensively. The music is also excellent, although a bit tattered by repeated use, but still sounds great and humming the familiar melodies is always a great fun. The many RTF fans around the world will not miss the opportunity to hear these guys again for sure.

In short this is like eating your favorite ice cream – sweet familiar taste and great comfort but still Déjà vu ;)

HEIKKI SARMANTO ~ COUNTERBALANCE
PORTER 1506 (Barcode: 656605863825) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1971 Released: 2008

This is the second album by Finnish pianist / composer Heikki SarmantoFind albums by this artist, recorded soon after his return from Boston, where he attended the Berklee College of Music – the first Finnish musician to do so. The core of the quintet, which recorded this album, was established in Boston, and recorded a semi-formal session there, released only 38 years later as "A Boston DateFind albums with this title" on the PorterFind albums on this label label. With three Finnish musicians: Sarmanto on Fender Rhodes, flautist Juhani AaltonenFind albums by this artist and bassist Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist (Heikki´s brother and life-long collaborator), and two Americans: guitarist Lance GundersonFind albums by this artist and drummer Craig HerndonFind albums by this artist (Pekka replaced George MrazFind albums by this artist, who played on the Boston session, recorded just few months earlier), this quintet continues the explorations originated in their first encounter, but this time the approach is quite different.

Whereas the Boston session was almost completely spontaneous and unplanned, exploring the realm of Free Jazz collective improvisation, this recording session is obviously well planned and therefore much more organized. Although there is plenty of great improvisations here and even some Free Form, the melodic content is clearly stated and well developed, with an overall atmosphere of typical Nordic tranquility and serenity in the air. Sarmanto´s switch to the Fender Rhodes and Aaltonen using the flute exclusively have a deep impact on the album´s overall sound and ambiance, which are predominantly relaxed and deeply reflective. The worldwide explosion of Fusion, which happened in the early 1970s and which affected the Finnish scene as much as any other musical scene in the world can be heard here as well, with Sarmanto / Aaltonen interplays resembling the Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist / Joe FarrellFind albums by this artist dialogs on the early Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist albums.

But above all, the music, composed almost entirely by Sarmanto (with Gunderson contributing one composition), is a sublime example of European Jazz at its peak, combining the elements of Jazz tradition with harmonies from the European Classical Music and heritage from European ethnic music. The Scandinavian Jazz musicians and composers, and Finnish ones in particular, were amongst the pioneers of Jazz-World Fusion, and many of their creations were deeply rooted in local folklore. Aaltonen´s beautiful flute lines are full of clever innuendos to Finnish (but not only) folklore, as are many of Sarmanto´s piano lines. Pekka´s excellent bass playing is a clear evidence of his extraordinary talent and ability, which can be heard on countless Finnish Jazz albums over the years. Herndon provides a great rhythmic drive to the music and Gunderson solos and interacts with the other members of the quintet almost telepathically.

Overall this a beautifully played and well constructed piece of music, which one tends to remember fondly for a very long period of time – I know I did, as I never forgot this album since hearing it for the first time some 37 years ago. For people who never heard it before, this is a wonderful opportunity to discover a masterpiece of European Jazz, which has been unavailable for decades and only now reissued on CD for the first time. Don´t even think twice!

WAYNE SHORTER ~ THE COMPLETE COLUMBIA ALBUMS COLLECTION
SONY 886979202429 (Barcode: 886979202429) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock-World Fusion

Recorded: 1971 - 1988 Released: 2011

There are very few Jazz musicians, who can claim being at the epicenter of the most innovative and creative music making for decades and also be called one of the greatest Jazz composers, but saxophonist / composer Wayne ShorterFind albums by this artist certainly is one of them. His role as a member of the legendary second Miles DavisFind albums by this artist quintet and than as co-founder and co-leader of the no less legendary Weather ReportFind albums by this artist are already more significant than the achievements of most other musicians, but Shorter also has a most impressive solo career, which spans from the late 1950s to now, i.e. for over half a century.

Shorter´s recordings as a leader, which were chronologically released on the Vee-JayFind albums on this label, Blue NoteFind albums on this label, ColumbiaFind albums on this label and VerveFind albums on this label labels present a magnificent body of work both as a performer and a composer. The Blue Note recordings, eleven albums released between 1964 and 1970 and recorded while he was a member of the Miles Davis quintet, are perhaps the most impressive and pivotal as far as Jazz development is concerned, but all the others are also great showcases of his talent.

Shorter recorded four albums for Columbia; one in 1974 and the other three in the late 1980s, all of which are included in this Box Set. The first album, ("Native DancerFind albums with this title") recorded with the brilliant Brazilian musician / composer Milton NascimentoFind albums by this artist is the most memorable and impressive of the Columbia recordings and a beautiful example of Jazz-World Fusion at its best. In addition to several great Brazilian musicians playing on the album, including Airto MoreiraFind albums by this artist, it also features Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist on piano. The other three albums are somewhat Fusion oriented and feature different lineups of first class musicians, especially keyboard players like Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, Stu GoldbergFind albums by this artist, Jim BeardFind albums by this artist, Patrice RushenFind albums by this artist, Geri AllenFind albums by this artist and others and of course almost exclusively the superb compositions by Shorter.

This Box Set also includes two bonus CDs, which collect all Weather Report tracks, which were composed by Wayne Shorter and recorded during the group´s entire lifespan. Although not adding anything new, these CDs present a great historic document of Shorter´s contribution as a composer to the group´s monumental accomplishments.

This Box Set is a must to all Wayne Shorter fans, especially in view of the fact that the individual albums have been out of print for ages. The musical content is of course top notch in every respect, a part of the legacy of a great musician, which deserves to be heard and remembered!

Recorded: 2019 Released: 2020

This is the debut album by young Polish keyboardist / composer Mariusz SmolinskiFind albums by this artist recorded in a trio format with bassist Bartosz KuczFind albums by this artist and drummer Piotr BudniakFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight original compositions, all by Smolinski.

The music is all strictly melody based mainstream Jazz / Fusion, with a distinct retro feel reminiscent of Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist 1970s / 1980s recordings, constantly moving on the border between Jazz and Fusion. Smolinski plays both acoustic piano and the Fender Rhodes (or synthesizer), which naturally swing the mood between the Jazz and Fusion idioms. Kucz plays a distinct Fusion oriented electric bass whereas Budniak´s drumming is more Jazz oriented, which again emphasizes the stylistic dichotomy of the album.

The compositions are all solid and well structured, the ballads being typically drenched in Polish melancholy and for me stronger than the up-tempo numbers, with have less distinct character. But all in all the music is certainly very well crafted and offers a pleasant experience to a wide range of listeners.

The performances are all first class, as usual with the young and well schooled Polish Jazz musicians. Smolinski has what it takes to play a wide range of stylistic nuances, sounding confident and sparkling. Kucz gets a lot of exposure and soloing opportunities, and his bass work is truly inspiring, with a wonderful fretless sound and fluidity. His contributions on this album are an essential part of the entire result and for Fusion bass lovers are probably the focus of interest. Budniak, who is a frequent participant in on the Polish Jazz / Fusion recording scene, is as precise and inspiring as always.

Overall this is an excellent debut effort, which shows potential and professionalism of the leader in this early stage of his career. Smolinski needs to find his personal voice and style in time, which will surely happen very quickly based on the rapid development displayed by the young generation of Polish Jazz players, and I´m already curious to hear his sophomore effort.

KRYSTYNA STANKO ~ AQUARIUS: THE ORCHESTRAL SESSIONS
STM 006 (Barcode: 602577499500) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2018 Released: 2019

This is the 9th album by Polish Jazz vocalist Krystyna StankoFind albums by this artist, recorded with her more or less regular musical companions: vibraphonist Dominik BukowskiFind albums by this artist, guitarist Marcin WadolowskiFind albums by this artist, bassist Piotr LemanczykFind albums by this artist and drummer Cezary KonradFind albums by this artist. Violin virtuoso Mateusz SmoczynskiFind albums by this artist guests on a couple of tracks. Additionally the Sinfonia VivaFind albums by this artist Orchestra, conducted by Krzysztof HerdzinFind albums by this artist, who also wrote the orchestral arrangements, provides the orchestral accompaniment. The album presents ten songs, three of which were written by Antonio Carlos JobimFind albums by this artist, two by Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, four are Jazz standards and one is a Polish cabaret song.

Musically this album is a direct continuation of Stanko´s previous album "Novos AnosFind albums with this title", which was characterized by a distinct Bossa Nova flavor, which is also present here. The same idea of presenting well known songs in a very personal interpretation applies also here. The superb instrumental work by the excellent musicians who accompany the vocalist, are enhanced here with the addition of the orchestral arrangement, wonderfully and cleverly put together by Herdzin.

Altogether the instrumental work on this album is every bit as impressive as the vocal parts. Bukowski uses the vibraphone and the marimba like a snake charmer, adopting his solos to every tune. Wadolowski plays quiet acoustic guitar parts but also excellent electric solos and consistently proves that he is one of the top guitar players on the local scene. Lemanczyk, as usual, keeps everything under control with his caressing bass lines, which fill all the spaces. Konrad is steady like the Rock of Gibraltar, and his delicate, but firm drum parts, which are the heartbeat of the music.

Herdzin´s arrangements deserve praise not only for their sophistication, but more importantly for their incorporation within the overall framework of the sound, staying respectfully in the background and ornamenting the sonic whole rather that dominating it.

Stanko, as usual, balances between singing lyrics and vocalese, in order to keep the things interesting. Her sensuous and dreamy voice is charming as always, and she is not trying to sound like anybody else simply being herself, a quality I always admired in her career. Her understanding of the fact that there is nothing wrong with singing standards, as long as the result is both musically solid and uncompromising, is a key ingredient of her musical mission.

Overall this is a beautiful album full of superb music and outstanding performances, which can be enjoyed by a wide spectrum of Jazz listeners, from complete beginners to experienced connoisseurs, with each one being able to find something that touches them.

Thank you again, my Baltic Siren, for sharing your musical heart with me and everybody else who will listen to this music and enjoy it. You are the one and only, as always!

KRYSTYNA STANKO ~ NOVOS ANOS
FOR TUNE 0113 (Barcode: 5906395808151) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2016 Released: 2016

This is the eighth album by Polish Jazz vocalist Krystyna StankoFind albums by this artist, recorded with her regular wonderful Baltic crew which includes vibraphonist Dominik BukowskiFind albums by this artist, guitarist Marcin WadolowskiFind albums by this artist, bassist Piotr LemanczykFind albums by this artist and guest Brazilian drummer / percussionist Ze Luis NascimentoFind albums by this artist. Trumpeter Marcin GawdzisFind albums by this artist guests on two tracks and drummer Lukasz ZytaFind albums by this artist on three tracks. Together they perform eleven songs (one is repeated twice), six of which were composed by Antonio Carlos JobimFind albums by this artist, and the rest by different composers like Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, Mongo SantamariaFind albums by this artist and others, all with a distinct samba and bossa nova character. All the songs use English lyrics.

This album marks a significant diversion in Stanko´s career, which is usually focused on singing original material composed by her or her band members. When I visited her in Gdansk three months ago, not long after this album was recorded, she told me that this was a conscious decision to create an album which could be enjoyed by a much wider audience than her previous recordings, without compromising the artistic and aesthetic values. There is no doubt that she and her band managed to do just that.

The album includes mostly very well known songs, which have been previously recorded many times by artists all over the world. This album offers however a slightly different approach, with the instrumental arrangements being much more Jazzy than similar efforts. The presence of Bukowski adds another dimension, normally not present on such recordings and the brilliant bass playing by Lemanczyk firmly places these interpretation within the Jazz idiom rather that the usual Pop or easy Jazz genre. Wadolowski adds some beautiful guitar parts, which are also quite different from the standard guitar parts used on samba albums and so does Gawdzis, albeit briefly. Of course having a Brazilian drummer / percussionist on boards ensures that rhythmically everything works perfectly.

Stanko´s deep sensual voice is of course ideally suited for these songs, and her vocal theatrics fit the bill perfectly. Although her pronunciation is not exactly "perfect" English, it is not significant as these songs have been sung in English by Jobim himself, Astrud GilbertoFind albums by this artist and countless other non-native English speaking vocalist and a slightly foreign accent in this case is perhaps an asset rather than a weakness. Stanko of course has the perfect feel needed to perform these songs and does it with obvious passion and love. She uses superb vocalese parts in addition to the lyrics, which are truly delightful. For me the most touching song of the album is the intimate trio which finds Stanko supported just by vibraphone and bass, which is perfection itself. Stanko respectfully leaves a lot of space for instrumental parts, which is most appropriate.

If this album will bring Stanko to a wider public attention, it will serve its purpose ideally. She deserves to be heard and adored by everybody as much as I do adore her, regardless what she does, not because she is my friend, but because she is a true Artist and a wonderful human being. Well done Krystyna, Dear!

Recorded: 1992 Released: 2007

6th album (5th on Atlantic) by American guitarist / composer Mike SternFind albums by this artist, who has been one of the most prominent figures in the Jazz and Fusion fields for the last three decades. His virtuoso performances and excellent writing are a source of musical joy and his consistently superb standards serve as a model, followed by generations of young guitarist around the world. On this album Stern tackles (for the first time) Jazz compositions by other composers (Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, Miles DavisFind albums by this artist, John ColtraneFind albums by this artist and others), adding three compositions of his own. Accompanied by a superb group of musicians, which includes trumpeter Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist, bassist Jay AndersonFind albums by this artist and drummer Al FosterFind albums by this artist, this session clearly shows Stern´s deep ties with Jazz and profound understanding of the Jazz tradition. This is classic Fusion and Stern´s guitar playing is simply overwhelmingly excellent, with great flow, emotion and technical virtuosity. A must for any Fusion enthusiast!

ARTA 10004 (Barcode: 8595017400421) ~ CZECH REPUBLIC ~ Jazz-World Fusion

This is a delightful album by the Czech flautist / saxophonist / composer / bandleader Jiri StivinFind albums by this artist, recorded with his quartet, which also includes guitarist Jaroslav SindlerFind albums by this artist, bassist Frantisek UhlirFind albums by this artist and drummer Josef VejvodaFind albums by this artist. Stivin, who´s been active on the local scene since the 1960s, is undisputedly one of the Godfathers of Czech Jazz and his many recordings are all examples of musical excellence. This project reflects his connection to Czech and Slovak Folklore, which serves as a source of inspiration to the music recorded on this album. Eight folk songs are given a Jazz treatment by Stivin and his cohorts; one Stivin original and ten short transition pieces (lasting under a minute each) and one piece by Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist are also used. The performances are brilliant from start to finish, as expected from such refined players. Stivin excels on flute, sounding quite similar to Ian Anderson at his best. His sense of humor is also well reflected on this album, which overall is a most pleasurable listening experience. This album should be very interesting not only to Jazz fans, but also to most Prog fans! Wholeheartedly recommended!

HIROMI UEHARA ~ BEYOND STANDARD
TELARC 83686 (Barcode: 089408368622) ~ JAPAN ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2008 Released: 2008

5th album by Japanese keyboardist / composer Hiromi UeharaFind albums by this artist, which continues her drift from classical Jazz recordings towards Jazz-Rock Fusion. As the title suggests, Hiromi performs here her stormy interpretations of Jazz standards (only one of her original compositions is included here) with her quartet, which includes David FiuczynskiFind albums by this artist on guitar, Tony GreyFind albums by this artist on bass and Martin ValihoraFind albums by this artist on drums. This album is definitely her most Fusion oriented recording so far, with Hiromi using the synthesizers to extreme and David’s electric guitar wilder than ever. Of course she plays lots of acoustic piano passages as well, but the entire atmosphere of the album is definitely Fusion oriented. The performances are absolutely brilliant, as expected, and most importantly Hiromi’s arrangements succeed in igniting new fire in some of the standards, that have been previously used to death by so many Jazz musicians. She has a brilliant pair of ears and her youthful spirit, combined with extraordinary virtuosity, place her right on top of the new Jazz generation. Of course Jazz purists often criticize the Fusion direction (still 40 years after Fusion was “invented”), accusing her of commercialism and other nonsense. Well, she just released an album of acoustic piano duets with Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, spitting in the face of her accusers. Anybody with a pair of clean ears and some musical sensitivity should be able to hear Hiromi’s genius, regardless of what she plays, I certainly do. This is a brilliant Fusion album, full of great music, superb performances and joie de vivre, which are so often missing from contemporary Jazz recordings. Brilliant stuff!

HIROMI UEHARA ~ MOVE
TELARC 33814 ~ JAPAN ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2012 Released: 2012

This is the 8th album by the extraordinary Japanese pianist / composer Hiromi UeharaFind albums by this artist, and the 2nd recording with her current trio (called The Trio ProjectFind albums by this artist) with the wonderful veteran American bassist Anthony JacksonFind albums by this artist and the outstanding British drummer Simon PhillipsFind albums by this artist. The album comprises of nine original compositions, all by Hiromi, three of which are combined into a mini-suite.

During the last decade since Hiromi first "exploded" on the scene, drawing immediate attention, she managed to produce an extensive body of work of outstanding quality, which has very few, if any, parallels. Immensely gifted as a composer and blessed by virtuosic piano ability, in addition to her personal charm, beauty and above all heavenly smile, she is talent incarnate. Her studio albums, live videos and cooperation projects with other musicians, like Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, Stanley ClarkeFind albums by this artist and others are all examples of her versatility and limitless abilities.

Hiromi´s output with this particular trio is some of her best, which is not surprising considering the level of experience and talent of her rhythm section. Jackson´s electric bass pulsations are funky and wonderfully fill the space between the piano chords, always exactly on time and in tune, beautifully supportive and inventive at once. Phillips, who is a very "busy" and dynamic drummer, suits her quirky music perfectly, seemingly being all over the drum set as if he was an octopus. The unity, perfect match and obvious musical coherence and almost telepathic mutual understanding turn this trio into a "scary" music making machine.

Hiromi is often criticized for being "all over the place", both as a composer and a player, but this kind of critique is completely senseless. She can play faster and more accurately than most, and her music is multi-layered, with melodic lines and funky rhythm vamps co-existing logically and harmonically. Therefore one can suspect that most of any criticism towards her is primarily motivated by envy.

This trio can be seen and heard playing live on the "Live In MarciacFind albums with this title" DVD, which was recorded a year earlier, performing mostly material from their debut album "VoiceFind albums with this title". Obviously Hiromi fans need no special arguments to grab this one ASAP, those who are still unfamiliar with her wonderful output should not waste any more time ignoring her, just give her a chance and you won´t regret it. Superb stuff!

HIROMI UEHARA ~ TIME CONTROL
TELARC 83655 (Barcode: 089408365522) ~ JAPAN ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2006 Released: 2007

4th album by Japanese keyboards player Hiromi UeharaFind albums by this artist firmly establishes her position as one of the brightest stars of contemporary jazz. Her amazing compositions and breathtaking virtuosity are constant factors present on all of hers albums so far, which of course makes it really easy to decide if one should get anything she puts her name to. Although deeply rooted in jazz, on this album Hiromi takes a step towards Fusion by expanding her regular trio into a quartet with the addition of superb guitarist David FiuczynskiFind albums by this artist. Being a strong soloist, Fiuczynski adds another dimension to the music and the fiery exchanges between his guitar and Hiromi’s keyboards bring back fond memories of similar exchanges between Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist in Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist. But there is plenty of Hiromi playing the acoustic piano here to satisfy the more jazz oriented folks as well, so whichever way you look at this album it’s a gem. Anybody who already owns the previous Hiromi’s album will get this for sure but I urge people who are not familiar with her art to try her out – most of the people who listened to my (wholehearted) recommendations got hooked helplessly. Brilliant!

HIROMI UEHARA / EDMAR CASTANEDA ~ LIVE IN MONTREAL
TELARC 888072037212 (Barcode: 888072037212) ~ JAPAN ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2017 Released: 2017

This is a live duo album by Japanese pianist / composer Hiromi UeharaFind albums by this artist and Colombian harpist / composer Edmar CastanedaFind albums by this artist, recorded during the 2017 Montreal Jazz Festival. The album presents nine tracks, including a four-part suite, five of which were composed by Uehara, two by Castaneda and two more are by other composers.

Since her arrival on the Jazz scene Hiromi (her stage name) took the world by storm, dazzling fellow musicians and fans by her incredible technique, virtuosity and energy. She is certainly one of the most amazing concert artists, which I have been lucky to witness many times.

Now, two decades later, she has already an impressive recording legacy, including several duo recordings, including one with Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist. This duo album with harpist Castaneda, which is an amalgam of Jazz and South American Folkloristic elements, is full of energy and brilliant exchanges between the two musicians, and despite its somehow unusual sonic vistas, emphasizes the fact that Jazz knows no stylistic limitations.

Castaneda’s harp sounds often more like an expanded guitar and his parts are a perfect companion to Hiromi’s arpeggios and dazzling interplays. This is another example of “Art of the Duo” at it’s very best.

Overall, this is a superb live album by two great musicians, who originate from opposite halves of the globe, but manage to create a perfect cooperative effort together. For Hiromi’s many fans worldwide, this is of course a must, but all lovers of somewhat uncommon Jazz should be delighted.

The level of musicianship is of course staggering and the overall result should please most listeners of contemporary Jazz. Warmly recommended!

WEATHER REPORT ~ WEATHER REPORT

Recorded: 1971 Released: 1991

1st album by Weather ReportFind albums by this artist, the greatest Fusion band ever, and a pivotal recording, which would change the face of music for generations to come. The core members of Weather Report were Joe ZawinulFind albums by this artist (keyboards) and Wayne ShorterFind albums by this artist (saxophones), two prominent members of the 1960s Miles DavisFind albums by this artist ensembles, and a young Czech bass player Miroslav VitousFind albums by this artist (who played with Davis for a brief period of time only). Vitous arrived in the US in 1966 on a Berklee scholarship (like Zawinul almost a decade earlier) but soon after left the school to explore the soaring jazz scene in NY, where he played with Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, Herbie MannFind albums by this artist, Stan GetzFind albums by this artist and many others. After meeting Zawinul and Shorter the decision was made to start a new group, which would continue the direction set by Davis on his historic In A Silent WayFind albums with this title / Bitches BrewFind albums with this title sessions, based on a collaborative / group improvisation (Davis was moving in the meantime into a more funk oriented period). To complete the group they drafted another ex-Davis musician, the Brazilian percussionist Airto MoreiraFind albums by this artist and a young drummer Alphonse MouzonFind albums by this artist. The debut album, recorded soon after the band was formed, reveals with full force the extraordinary rapport the members of the group established immediately, transcending their individual personalities. The music is mostly atmospheric, free form and with subtle melody lines, mostly concealed beneath the improvisations. Thus began a journey, which lasted for over 15 years, which would place Weather Report on the forefront on contemporary music and create a model followed by countless jazz and fusion musicians all over the world to this very day. Although the group would undergo multiple personnel changes and stylistic swings, their innovative, groundbreaking and often prophetic leadership would remain unchallenged. In retrospect it’s interesting to see that something, which is considered a core of American culture, was in fact created by a group in which American born musicians were in fact a minority, with Zawinul and Vitous coming from Europe and Moreira from Brazil. It can be also considered as foretelling, since future Weather Report would be one of the first bands to include World Music elements into fusion. This is monumental stuff, absolutely essential listening and a historical document of great importance.

This is a criminally little known album by the celebrated British Jazz trumpeter / composer Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, released on the short-lived and sadly forgotten Ah UmFind albums on this label Records, owned by Nick PurnellFind albums by this artist. Trombonist Chris PyneFind albums by this artist and pianist John HorlerFind albums by this artist are added on the four last tracks only. The album presents seven Wheeler originals, the last four of which create a suite. All the music was recorded during a one-day session, which is absolutely amazing considering the complexity of the arrangements, but of course all these musicians were absolute Masters of the trade.

The music is obviously absolutely brilliant, as everything Wheeler ever created and most of it was never recorded by Wheeler again with other ensembles. He briefly describes the origin of all the compositions on the album in the liner notes, one of which is a wonderfully crafted tribute to Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist´s compositions, a rather unlikely connection, but nevertheless true.

The playing is of course also magnificent from start to finish, with plenty of wonderful solos by the participants and a superb ensemble performance, typical of British Jazz at its absolute best. The music was also excellently recorded with wonderful separation and perfect sound quality, which of curse enhances the listening pleasure even more.

Overall this is lost perfect gem which deserves a proud place in any serious British Jazz collection, and although quite difficult to come by these days, it is by all means worth the effort needed to hunt for it. Essential Kenny Wheeler!
Side Note
British composer / arranger Nick PurnellFind albums by this artist founded the short-lived Ah UmFind albums on this label label in 1989, which existed until 1993 and released a total of sixteen albums with some of the top British Jazz musicians of that period and a few American guests, which remain as of the finest recordings of that period. For some inexplicable reason all these albums are almost completely obsolete today, despite their excellent musical value, which is a shame, as they all deserve an honorable place in any decent British Jazz collection.
