  | DAVID CLAYTON-THOMAS ~ BLOODLINES DCT 2000 (Barcode: 660355351228) ~ CANADA ~ Brass Rock Recorded: 1998 Released: 1999
This is a studio album by Canadian vocalist / songwriter David Clayton-ThomasFind albums by this artist, primarily known as the charismatic frontman of the legendary Brass Rock ensemble Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, recorded with a huge team of over two dozen musicians, including some BS&T cohorts: trumpeters Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist, Lew SoloffFind albums by this artist and Tony KlatkaFind albums by this artist, trombonist Dave BargeronFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Fred LipsiusFind albums by this artist, guitarist Mike SternFind albums by this artist, bassist Gary FooteFind albums by this artist, drummer Brian DelaneyFind albums by this artist and many others. The album presents twelve songs, all of which were written by Clayton-Thomas.
The solo recording career of Clayton-Thomas was revitalized near the turn of the Millennium, when he was nearing the age of sixty, which is quite remarkable and unparalleled. He recorded (so far) thirteen albums since 1996, this being the second of them, more than twice the number of albums he recorded beforehand since the start of his career.
The album is the closest in style and sound to the album recorded with BS&T. The songs are beautifully arranged in the Brass Rock style and Clayton-Thomas performances are brilliant as always. His feeling and his idiosyncratic voice, charisma and love of music remain intact and for his many fans this album is strong as everything else he ever recorded. The accompanying musicians are all pros and the album offers superb instrumental performances from start to finish.
After being a great fan of Clayton-Thomas for over five decades, it is great to hear him carrying on with what he loves to do taking us along on a wonderful ride. My copy is autographed and includes a ticket stub from the concert where he signed the album.
Overall, this is an absolutely sublime example of David Clayton-Thomas as a vocalist and songwriter, one of the greatest talents to emerge on the American (well Canadian) scene in all time. Absolutely classic and indispensable in every collection of his recordings, but admittedly very difficult to find.

  | MILES DAVIS ~ RUBBERBAND RHINO 603497850785 (Barcode: 603497850785) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Pop Fusion Recorded: 1985 - 1986 Released: 2019
This is an album by iconic American Jazz trumpeter / composer Miles DavisFind albums by this artist, recorded in late 1985 / early 1986, following Davis’ departure from ColumbiaFind albums on this label and new contract with Warner Bros.Find albums on this label, which was supposed to release the album at the time, but scrapped it, releasing the legendary “TutuFind albums with this title” a year later. As such, the album was often referred to as “the lost Miles Davis album”, until its release thirty-four years later, although some of the material was used on the last Davis’ album “Doo-BopFind albums with this title”. The album presents eleven tracks and features various studio musicians and singers, some of which are co-credited as authors of the music, in addition to Jazz musicians appearing on some tracks, like guitarist Mike SternFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Bob BergFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Adam HolzmanFind albums by this artist and others. The album cover features one of Miles Davis’ paintings.
The music has very little to do with conventional / traditional Jazz per se, and marks Davis’ interest in Funk, Soul and Rap. The overall result is an amalgam of various Pop trends, spiced up by Davis’ incredible (as always) trumpet playing on top.
Warner Bros. decision to scrap the album was completely justified at the time, as releasing the album would have damaged Miles’ Jazz reputation, surely in the eyes of his followers, which were not prepared for such radical change in style and sound. “Tutu” offered a much milder and more Jazz oriented alternative and opened the way to the “new” Miles Davis, and the albums that followed created a new image, which was embraced in time by most of his followers. Additionally, the album suffers from some production / sound problems, which were solved on those later albums.
Overall, the album emphasizes the pioneering spirit of Miles Davis and his vision, which was always way ahead of the music scene, as in this case. His trumpet playing is as Godly as ever and most of the music here reflects perfectly the ever-evolving path he threaded, often quite alone. The album definitely deserves to be a part of the definitive Miles Davis collection!

CD3 presents a live recording from July 7, 1983 captured at the Montreal Jazz Festival, with Scofield, Evans, Jones, Cinelu and Foster.
The music is all by Davis, except for the interpretation of a Cindy LauperFind albums by this artist song, and illustrates the transition period between the decades of recording for Columbia, with the last three albums on that label, and the explosive career of the “new” Miles Davis following his signing with Warner Bros.Find albums on this label and the release of “TutuFind albums with this title”, and the last years of his life (1986-1991).
Overall, as usual with any archival material by Miles Davis, the music is absolutely Godly, stressing again his unshaken position as the greatest Jazz musician of all time. Although the music does not reveal any surprising elements, it affirms his status, and for every Davis’ follower on this planet is absolutely essential.

  | FUSIONATOR ~ KUNG FU NOT ON LABEL (Barcode: 5903292102993) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 2012 Released: 2012
This is the debut album by the young Polish Fusion band FusionatorFind albums by this artist, which comprises of guitarist Krzysztof LenczowskiFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Wawrzyniec PrasekFind albums by this artist, bassist Lukasz Jan JozwiakFind albums by this artist and drummer Szymon LinetteFind albums by this artist. The violin virtuoso Adam BaldychFind albums by this artist guests on two tracks. The album includes ten original compositions, six composed by Lenczowski, and two each by Prasek and Jozwiak.
The music is quite conventional as far as Fusion goes, with a tendency more towards Rock than Jazz, demonstrated both in the improvisational approach and the choice of rhythmic patterns. If fact Progressive Rock listeners should feel especially "at home" with this music, as it is similar to many other efforts in that area. Whatever is missing here as far as innovation and exploration are concerned is balanced by the excellently crafted tunes and the individual performances, which are mostly excellent, especially those by the guitarist, who is undoubtedly the most imaginative player in the group as well as the main composer. Stylistically he is heavily influenced by Mike SternFind albums by this artist (who also tends to sound Rockier rather than Jazzier) and a plethora of other guitar heroes, but manages to find an individual voice, which is quite rare these days.
Although obviously an introductory effort, this is quite an impressive debut, which should provide an exciting listening experience for Fusion / Prog enthusiasts, especially in view of the complete lack of excitement in that area in years. There is a lot of potential herein, which hopefully will turn into a more mature achievements in the not to distant future. Definitely worth investigating!

  | JAN GUNNAR HOFF ~ JAN GUNNAR HOFF GROUP FEATURING MIKE STERN LOSEN 196 (Barcode: 7090025831966) ~ NORWAY ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 2018 Released: 2018
This is an album by the excellent Norwegian trio led by pianist / composer Jan Gunnar HoffFind albums by this artist with bassist Per MathisenFind albums by this artist and drummer Audun KleiveFind albums by this artist, expanded to a quartet with the addition of the American guitar hero Mike SternFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight original compositions, five by Hoff and three by Stern (originating from his solo recordings). The music is superbly recorded and offers a spectacular sound quality and clarity.
The music is a wonderfully melodic amalgam of Scandinavian moods, Fusion and Progressive Rock nostalgic vistas, which flows smoothly from one tune to the next like a gentle breeze over a fjord. The well crafted tunes are ideal vehicles for all the musicians to show their talents and the album offers an intimate opportunity to hear the individual performances by four first class musicians.
Stern´s playing on this album deserves a special attention, as it is quite different from what can be heard on his numerous recordings to date. It seems to be much more delicate and gentler than before, perhaps an effect of the time passing by or just the atmosphere and the musicians involved in this project. One thing is sure; it is definitely some of the finest guitar artistry ever produced by Stern over time.
Hoff is not only a prolific composer and recording artist but also a virtuoso keyboard player, able to create a palette of moods and sound vistas which are both intelligent and sophisticated and at the same time accessible to a large audience. His musical approach has a nostalgic (in the best meaning of the word) tinge to it, fondly resembling the great Prog / Rock / Fusion keyboardists of the late 1960s / early 1970s.
Mathisen is a Monster bassist, considered as one of the top electric bass players today, who leads his own projects and is a renowned composer as well, being a great representative of Norwegian music worldwide. His playing on this album represents his gentler, more relaxed character, which personally is my favorite.
Kleive is also a prolific Jazz artist and composer, very diverse but always right on the money. His performances here are a textbook example of supportive drumming without being obtrusive, full of grace and good taste.
Overall this is a terrific piece of music, which keeps things simple and straight to the heart, full of great playing and superb melody lines, devoid of unnecessary pose, which sadly rules in music today. Wholeheartedly recommended!

  | GARY HUSBAND ~ DIRTY & BEAUTIFUL VOLUME 2 ABSTRACT LOGIX 033 (Barcode: 700261344836) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 2012 Released: 2012
This is the second of two albums by British drummer / keyboardist / composer Gary HusbandFind albums by this artist recorded with a host of friends, all of which are superstars of British and international Jazz, Rock and Jazz-Rock Fusion, like guitarists Allan HoldsworthFind albums by this artist, John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist, Robin TrowerFind albums by this artist, Ray RussellFind albums by this artist, Wayne KrantzFind albums by this artist, Neil TaylorFind albums by this artist, Alex MachacekFind albums by this artist, Jimmy HerringFind albums by this artist and Mike SternFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Jan HammerFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Sean FreemanFind albums by this artist and bassists Jimmy JohnsonFind albums by this artist, Teymur PhellFind albums by this artist, Mark KingFind albums by this artist, Laurence CotileFind albums by this artist and Livingstone BrownFind albums by this artist. The various lineups perform eleven pieces, five of which are original compositions by Husband and one is co-composed by him.
The music on this set is less diverse stylistically and explores mainly the various possibilities of the Jazz-Rock Fusion idiom, with accents and variations influenced mainly by the presence of the different guitar players on these tracks. Each and every guitarist contributes his very personal stylistic nuances, presenting overall a wonderful kaleidoscope of guitar Fusion pieces. The melodic themes of all these pieces fit very well together, which turns this seemingly unconnected collection of pieces into a coherent album, which is a thrilling listening experience.
As on its predecessor, Husband plays drums and keyboards on the various pieces, always with great taste and his usual virtuosity. His drumming approach is another solidifying element of this entire collection, which again manages to sound like a complete pre-planned album as opposed to a random collection of tunes, in spite of such diverse lineups taking part in the proceedings.
As usual this is Fusion Heaven, not only because of the incredibly high level of individual performances, but mainly because it is all about music and not individual ego trips which often haunt Fusion to its death. Therefore I can only wholeheartedly recommend this album to all Fusion lovers, especially since really good Fusion albums are so incredibly scarce these days. Hats off, Maestro!

  | LUKASZ PAWLIK ~ LONELY JOURNEY PAWLIK RELATIONS 011 (Barcode: 5901289325103) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Funk Fusion Recorded: 2015 Released: 2016
This is the debut album as a leader by Polish keyboardist / composer Lukasz PawlikFind albums by this artist, recorded with saxophonist Dawid GlowczewskiFind albums by this artist, bassist Pawel PantaFind albums by this artist and drummer Cezary KonradFind albums by this artist. The polish team is joined by American guitarist Mike SternFind albums by this artist on one track and trumpeter Michael Patches StewartFind albums by this artist on three tracks. The album presents eight original compositions, all by Pawlik.
The music is a slick, melodic Jazz-Funk / Groove / Smooth Jazz, similar to countless other albums of this sort. It is very well performed by all participants, who are true pros, and makes your feet tap, but once it´s over there is nothing left. The compositions are all pretty good, but again, hardly remarkable or memorable.
Why on earth would a talented Polish young musician play music, which others (yes Americans) have been playing ad nauseam since the 1970s, not moving an inch forward in the last almost 50 years. Admittedly the Polish team is in every respect as good as their American counterparts, so what? Although this kind of music has its followers, which of course is fine, this is only very marginally, if at all, Jazz and should not be labeled as such.
Overall this is a good Funk / Groove album, very well played, which lovers of the genre should enjoy in full, but definitely not something a Jazz connoisseur would listen to. And yes, Stern´s solo is as good as one might expect ;)

  | MIKE STERN ~ ALL OVER THE PLACE HEADS UP 33186 ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 2011 - 2012 Released: 2012
Some musicians simply can´t go wrong, and guitarist / composer Mike SternFind albums by this artist is certainly one of them. Decades of superb performances, composing and recording albums produced an incredible volume of music, which is always first rate and stays fresh, vibrant and eternally uplifting. This, his 17th album as a leader, is another of those wonderful albums that are simply perfect in what they are. It includes eleven new Stern original compositions, performed by an incredible all star band and guest artists, which reads like the who´s who of American Jazz and Fusion.
In time Stern managed to work out a formula, which works perfectly. His compositions combine great melodies with catchy licks and funky groove, but maintain incredibly high aesthetic standard and intelligent arrangements. The level of musicianship and stellar performances make the entire package irresistible. Stern´s Fusion is always an amalgam of the good old Blues roots with modern electric Funk and of course deep respect for the Jazz tradition.
The list of the performers on this album is really very long, so here are just a few of the better known names: trumpeter Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Kenny GarrettFind albums by this artist and Bob MalachFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Jim BeardFind albums by this artist, bassists Anthony JacksonFind albums by this artist, Will LeeFind albums by this artist and Dave HollandFind albums by this artist, drummers Dave WecklFind albums by this artist and Al FosterFind albums by this artist and many others. His wife, guitarist Leni SternFind albums by this artist, also makes a rare guest appearance.
Fusion enthusiasts and Stern fans alike need absolutely no encouragement to grab this gem immediately. If anybody on this planet is still unfamiliar with his music, perhaps now is the time to remedy the situation. This album smokes!

Guitar virtuoso Mike SternFind albums by this artist already proved his talents in the last three decades, being not only as an incredibly talented player, but also as a composer, bandleader and recording artists. What I admire about this great musician is his ability to maintain an incredible consistency and dedication to keep up a highly artistic standard. With this, his 16th album as a leader, Stern does it again, again all odds. Full of excellent new compositions (all of them his own) and brilliant instrumental work, this album is also a melting pot of ideas and musical directions. Stern invited many of his peers to take part in the recording and the final list of participants reads like a who´s who of modern Fusion: guitarists Steve VaiFind albums by this artist and Eric JohnsonFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Jim BeardFind albums by this artist, drummers Dave WecklFind albums by this artist and Terri Lyne CarringtonFind albums by this artist and even the entire trio of Medeski, Martin & WoodFind albums by this artist – and this is only a partial list. His virtuoso performances and excellent writing are a source of musical joy and his consistently superb standards serve as a model, followed by generations of young guitarist around the world. Stern first came to the attention of the music lovers in the mid 1970s as the lead guitarist for the then current lineup of Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist. Later on he joined drummer Billy CobhamFind albums by this artist and played on several of his exceptional Fusion albums, finally to be featured in the Miles DavisFind albums by this artist comeback ensemble in 1981. In 1986 Stern signed with AtlanticFind albums on this label, subsequently releasing 10 excellent albums on the label until he left in 2001. Completely fresh and full of energies, which remind me of the early days of Fusion, when Weather ReportFind albums by this artist, Mahavishnu OrchestraFind albums by this artist and other brilliant ensembles were breaking sound barriers and stylistic limitations. Of course these players perform brilliantly, as expected, but performance alone is not enough to make an album work, the music they play is the real deal. Co-composed by Jay-Tee Teterissa and Jeroen van Iterson it is first-rate from start to finish, from the first note to the last, from top to bottom, with great melody lines, perfect harmonies and powerful driving rhythms. Add to this excellent production, arrangements and sound quality and you have a Fusion gem of rare beauty. Jay-Tee´s bass sounds sometimes like a lead guitar and sometimes like a pulse of a sprinter. The keyboardist plays a superb Fender piano, which takes the music on a retro trip on occasion. In short this is one great Fusion album, which no fan of the genre should miss. A must!

This is the 1st album by Dutch bass virtuoso Jay-Tee TeterissaFind albums by this artist, a superb player and composer, who remains relatively unknown, although his talents put him in the front row of today´s Fusion Masters. Recorded with an excellent team of great musicians, which includes US guitar hero Mike SternFind albums by this artist, Canadian bassist Alain CaronFind albums by this artist, Dutch keyboardist Jeroen van ItersonFind albums by this artist, drummer Marcel LatupeirissaFind albums by this artist and several others, this is a great Fusion album, which somehow never managed to draw the attention it deserves. Of course these players perform brilliantly, as expected, but performance alone is not enough to make an album work, the music they play is the real deal. Co-composed by Jay-Tee Teterissa and Jeroen van Iterson it is first-rate from start to finish. This new edition adds previously unavailable material and brings this great album back in circulation. In short this is one great Fusion album, which no fan of the genre should miss. A must!

  | VARIOUS ARTISTS ~ FUSION FOR MILES: A BITCHIN` BREW MASCOT 7166 (Barcode: 8712725716624) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 2005 Released: 2005
This is the 3rd project in the series of Fusion tributes, conceived, produced and arranged by Jeff RichmanFind albums by this artist. This time he is paying tribute to the Big Boss himself, Miles DavisFind albums by this artist. Ten compositions by Miles Davis are given a modern fusion treatment, each featuring a different guitarist. The inspiration comes of course from the electric jazz period of Miles, around Bitches BrewFind albums with this title, which of course featured John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist – the same man who was paid a tribute by Richman’s previous project. The rhythm section this time consists of Vinnie CalaiutaFind albums by this artist – drums, Alphonso JohnsonFind albums by this artist – bass and Larry GoldingsFind albums by this artist – organ. Ex- Miles Davis saxophonist Dave LiebmanFind albums by this artist provides the link to the original music and the featured guitarists include Mike SternFind albums by this artist, Bill FrisellFind albums by this artist, Bill ConnorsFind albums by this artist, Pat MartinoFind albums by this artist, Bireli LagreneFind albums by this artist, etc. “Conventional” lovers of Miles Davis might find this treatment a bit bold, but fusion fans will definitely enjoy every minute of this.

  | VARIOUS ARTISTS ~ VISIONS OF AN INNER MOUNTING APOCALYPSE MASCOT 7117 (Barcode: 8712725711728) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 2005 Released: 2005
This is the 2nd project in the series of Fusion tributes, conceived, produced and arranged by Jeff RichmanFind albums by this artist. An entire generation of contemporary fusion guitar players pays tribute to their divine master – John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist and his band Mahavishnu OrchestraFind albums by this artist. This ambitious project works out like a dream (a wet dream for fusion fans for sure). Ten compositions by McLaughlin, written for and performed with Mahavishnu Orchestra, are given here a new treatment. Each of the tracks features a different guitarist and the list reads like a who’s who of fusion: Mike SternFind albums by this artist, Steve MorseFind albums by this artist, Frank GambaleFind albums by this artist, David FiuczynskiFind albums by this artist, etc. The accompanying rhythm section of Vinnie CalaiutaFind albums by this artist – drums, Kai EckhardtFind albums by this artist – bass and Mitchel FormanFind albums by this artist – keyboards is the backbone of the project and carries the load splendidly. Ex-Mahavishnu Orchestra violinist Jerry GoodmanFind albums by this artist adds his magic touch on several tracks, closing the full circle, so to speak. Definitely a must for all Mahavishnu Orchestra fans and basically for all fusion fans - whatever their fusion taste may be this is much too good to be ignored.

  | VARIOUS ARTISTS ~ VIVA CARLOS!: A SUPERNATURAL MARATHON CELEBRATION MASCOT 7210 (Barcode: 8712725721024) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 2006 Released: 2006
5th Fusion tribute album produced by Jeff RichmanFind albums by this artist (see the earlier John ColtraneFind albums by this artist, John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist, Miles DavisFind albums by this artist and Steely DanFind albums by this artist Fusion tributes). Sticking to the same formula, the producer sets up a “house band” (this time including Peter WolfFind albums by this artist – keyboards, Abe LaborielFind albums by this artist – bass, Dave WecklFind albums by this artist – drums and Luis ConteFind albums by this artist – percussion) and matches it with some of the best Fusion guitar players (this time Robben FordFind albums by this artist, Frank GambaleFind albums by this artist, Albert LeeFind albums by this artist, Pat MartinoFind albums by this artist, Mike SternFind albums by this artist and others). As the title suggests, the subject matter this time is the music of Carlos SantanaFind albums by this artist. Since this formula worked out splendidly on the previous four albums, there is no reason to suspect that things would go wrong this time, and indeed they don’t. The only problem might have been the choice of material from the vast SantanaFind albums by this artist repertoire, but fortunately only the best tunes were selected, all of them from his early and most fruitful years. The various guitar players, rather then to imitate Santana’s guitar sound and special technique, play in their own individual way, taking the music places often quite different from the origin. The entire album works out beautifully as a whole and Fusion fans (and guitar freaks) should have a field day with this stuff.
