CARLA BLEY ~ APPEARING NIGHTLY
WATT 33 (Barcode: 602517255166) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2006 Released: 2008

The Superwoman of American Jazz, pianist / composer / arranger / bandleader Carla BleyFind albums by this artist is undoubtedly the most significant female figure dominating the scene since the late 1950s (yes it does seem incredible). Her numerous compositions constitute an unparalleled songbook, which has been used not only by herself and her various ensembles and bands, but by almost every Jazz musician the world over. Her work is extremely versatile and covers the many different Jazz subgenres as well as Progressive Rock and others. One has to admit that very few other composers have such an ability to write a seemingly simple tune, which turns into a great and timeless melody like she does, and many love her just for that. This superb albums includes some of her recent compositions, which in their approach, styling and general feel play tribute to the great Big Bands of the early 20th Century, particularly the greatest of them all, the Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist Orchestra. Like Ellington before her, Bley sees in Jazz the contemporary Classical music and she treats it with the same seriousness and zeal. The music is beautifully arranged and breathtakingly performed by a superb collection of musicians, like British saxophonists Andy SheppardFind albums by this artist and Julian ArgüellesFind albums by this artist, Austrian saxophonist Wolfgang PushingFind albums by this artist, American trumpeter Lew SoloffFind albums by this artist, the omnipresent (as far as Bley is concerned) bassist Steve SwallowFind albums by this artist and many other wonderful musicians. The music was recorded live at the legendary Parisian "New Morning" club, and is one of the best live Big Band recordings I´ve ever heard. Overall this is an unbelievable experience, a blessed hour of music of the highest quality, performed gracefully and elegantly and composed by a Genius. What more could one want? An absolute must to anybody with ears, which still work…

BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS ~ WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS?
OMNIVORE 518 (Barcode: 810075112894) ~ USA ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2023

This is an absolutely sensational live archive album by the iconic American Brass Rock / Jazz-Rock Fusion ensemble Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, recorded in June / July 1970 during their Eastern European tour behind the Iron Curtain, organized and sponsored by the State Department, which included shows in Zagreb, Yugoslavia / Bucharest, Romania and Warsaw, Poland. The shows were filmed and recorded for a documentary, and remained lost for over fifty years, finally to be re-discovered and now released This CD is the soundtrack of the documentary. The album presents ten tracks, most of which were recorded during the final concert in Warsaw. The material originates mostly from the second, eponymous BS&T album from 1968 and the debut album “Child Is Father To The ManFind albums with this title” from 1967.

The lineup includes vocalist David Clayton-ThomasFind albums by this artist, trumpeters Lew SoloffFind albums by this artist and Chuck WinfieldFind albums by this artist, trombonist Jerry HymanFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Fred LipsiusFind albums by this artist, keyboardist / trombonist Dick HalliganFind albums by this artist, guitarist Steve KatzFind albums by this artist, bassist Jim FielderFind albums by this artist and drummer Bobby ColombyFind albums by this artist.

The sound quality and the music are absolutely stellar and every second of this album is absolutely sensational. The strength of the material, the arrangements and the virtuosic performances are some of the best musical moments ever caught on tape. Despite the fact that this music was recorded fifty-three years ago, it easily swipes away almost anything recorded since, and remains completely unique. This version of BS&T was a one-time collection of completely compatible musicians, which together were able to produce an incredibly intelligent, sophisticated and everlasting music.

Overall, as far as archival albums are concerned, this is probably the best one in a decade, if not two. They don’t make music like this today or even anything remotely close to it, and listening to this album proves how deeply in trouble we are today with today’s music and Culture in general. I can’t imagine any serious music lover not having this Masterpiece in their collection, can you?

DAVID CLAYTON-THOMAS ~ BLOODLINES
DCT 2000 (Barcode: 660355351228) ~ CANADA ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1998 Released: 1999

This is a studio album by Canadian vocalist / songwriter David Clayton-ThomasFind albums by this artist, primarily known as the charismatic frontman of the legendary Brass Rock ensemble Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, recorded with a huge team of over two dozen musicians, including some BS&T cohorts: trumpeters Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist, Lew SoloffFind albums by this artist and Tony KlatkaFind albums by this artist, trombonist Dave BargeronFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Fred LipsiusFind albums by this artist, guitarist Mike SternFind albums by this artist, bassist Gary FooteFind albums by this artist, drummer Brian DelaneyFind albums by this artist and many others. The album presents twelve songs, all of which were written by Clayton-Thomas.

The solo recording career of Clayton-Thomas was revitalized near the turn of the Millennium, when he was nearing the age of sixty, which is quite remarkable and unparalleled. He recorded (so far) thirteen albums since 1996, this being the second of them, more than twice the number of albums he recorded beforehand since the start of his career.

The album is the closest in style and sound to the album recorded with BS&T. The songs are beautifully arranged in the Brass Rock style and Clayton-Thomas performances are brilliant as always. His feeling and his idiosyncratic voice, charisma and love of music remain intact and for his many fans this album is strong as everything else he ever recorded. The accompanying musicians are all pros and the album offers superb instrumental performances from start to finish.

After being a great fan of Clayton-Thomas for over five decades, it is great to hear him carrying on with what he loves to do taking us along on a wonderful ride. My copy is autographed and includes a ticket stub from the concert where he signed the album.

Overall, this is an absolutely sublime example of David Clayton-Thomas as a vocalist and songwriter, one of the greatest talents to emerge on the American (well Canadian) scene in all time. Absolutely classic and indispensable in every collection of his recordings, but admittedly very difficult to find.

GIL EVANS / ORCHESTRA ~ PLAYS THE MUSIC OF JIMI HENDRIX (EXPANDED EDITION)
RCA 63872 (Barcode: 090266387229) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1974 - 1975 Released: 2005

Pianist / composer / arranger / bandleader Gil EvansFind albums by this artist was surely one of the most forward-thinking and open-minded Jazz Masters, who were able to overcome the typical American Jazz snobbery and keep their ears wide-open to anything of interest that was happening outside of the genre´s stifling ramparts. His revolutionary work with Miles DavisFind albums by this artist, one of the first examples of cross-genre music making and amalgamation of World Music elements into Jazz earned him his initial glory and recognition, but Evans remained a pioneer for the rest of his life. He was also the first Jazz personality to recognize and publically acknowledge his admiration of the talents of Jimi HendrixFind albums by this artist, not only as an exceptional guitarist but also as a great composer. Evans approached Hendrix with a cooperation proposal, which Jimi accepted wholeheartedly, but alas Jimi´s untimely death turned all plans into unfulfilled dreams. However, in spite of the disappointment, Evans decided to pay tribute to the genius of Hendrix by recording this exceptional album of arrangements of music composed by Hendrix, performed by his orchestra. This stunning example of Jazz-Rock Fusion is completely different from most other efforts pursued at the time worldwide and demonstrates a perfect marriage between Jazz and Rock in the orchestral realm. The orchestra, which included mostly young and up-coming Jazz virtuosi, features such illustrious players as guitarists John AbercrombieFind albums by this artist and Ryo KawasakiFind albums by this artist, trumpeters Lew SoloffFind albums by this artist and Marvin PetersonFind albums by this artist, saxophonists David SanbornFind albums by this artist and George AdamsFind albums by this artist, drummers Bruce DitmasFind albums by this artist and Tony WilliamsFind albums by this artist and many more. Hearing the music of Hendrix in this fantastic setting is an exceptional musical expedition, especially for people who are familiar with the original recordings by Hendrix. Evans finds new hidden facets in this music, which only a great musician can discover, and shares them with the listener, taking him on a journey of discovery. This expanded edition presents all the material on the original LP in unabridged form and adds alternative takes as bonuses. Exceptional stuff and a must for any true music lover!

GIL EVANS ORCHESTRA ~ TRIBUTE TO GIL
SOUL NOTE 121209 (Barcode: 02731212092) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1988 Released: 1989

The great American (of Canadian origin) pianist / composer / arranger / bandleader Gil EvansFind albums by this artist was one of the most influential Jazz personalities in the 20th Century. The orchestra he led and conducted, The Gil Evans OrchestraFind albums by this artist, was undoubtedly one of the most important orchestras in Jazz history, for many reasons, the most important of which being the constant innovative approach as far as the arrangements were concerned and the openness to other music genres, especially Rock, which often made the orchestra sound like a Rock Big Band, as well as the presence of young and upcoming Jazz players as members of the orchestra.

In the summer of 1987 the orchestra performed in Italy and was enthusiastically welcomed by the warm Italian audiences. Following Evans´ death in March of 1988 it was decided to repeat the Italian concert series in July of 1988, as a tribute to Evans, which included appearances at the Umbria and Sicilia Jazz Festivals, where the music presented on this album was recorded. The orchestra´s lineup reads like a who´s who of American and European Jazz at the time: trumpeters Lew SoloffFind albums by this artist, Hannibal PetersonFind albums by this artist and Miles EvansFind albums by this artist (Gil´s son), saxophonists Chris HunterFind albums by this artist and Alex FosterFind albums by this artist, pianist Gil GoldsteinFind albums by this artist, guitarist Bireli LagreneFind albums by this artist, bassist Mark EganFind albums by this artist, drummer Danny GottliebFind albums by this artist and many others. For Polish Jazz enthusiasts it is worthy to mention that both vocalist Urszula DudziakFind albums by this artist and violinist Michal UrbaniakFind albums by this artist take part in the proceedings.

The music is a series of vibrant cross-genre oriented arrangements, which use a Funky rhythm section pulsation and layers of Big Band brass sound to create a unique amalgam. Four of the six tracks present music composed by Evans and are a great tribute to his compositional vision. The Dudziak / Goldstein duo is one of the absolute highlights of the album, featuring her idiosyncratic vocal / electronics pyrotechnics.

Overall this is a great tribute to Evans´ contribution to Jazz music and a piece of history well deserved revisiting!

MICHAEL GIBBS ~ NONSEQUENCE
PROVOCATEUR 1027 (Barcode: 5038491102724) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2001 Released: 2001

British composer / arranger / bandleader Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist is one of the pillars of modern British Jazz. His outstanding 1970s recordings serve as musical milestones in the development of Jazz and Jazz-Rock Fusion composition and his bands of the period, which always included some of the best players on the scene, are remarkable achievements remembered and cherished to this very day. After the decline of the British Jazz scene Gibbs returned to the US, where he concentrated on teaching and composing works for many different media (TV, cinema, performances and concerts) in a variety of musical genres, including of course Jazz and contemporary Classical Music. Although many of his compositions were released as soundtrack albums, he recorded only three “real” / dedicated Jazz albums in the last 30 years. Therefore his new album on ProvocateurFind albums on this label Records is a major event and a delight for his many fans and admirers. The album presents an ambitious project involving a recording on two continents (Hamburg and New York) by two big ensembles (the NDR Big BandFind albums by this artist in Hamburg and a specially assembled band in NY), presenting music mostly written by Gibbs with just a few of his unique arrangements of compositions by other composers. The NY band includes some of the most illustrious names on the contemporary Jazz scene, like Lew SoloffFind albums by this artist and Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist (trumpet), Chris HunterFind albums by this artist and Alex FosterFind albums by this artist (saxophone), Hiram BullockFind albums by this artist (guitar) and Steve SwallowFind albums by this artist (bass) among others. The NDR Big Band includes many marvelous players, but most notably saxophonist Christof LauerFind albums by this artist and pianist Wladyslaw SendeckiFind albums by this artist. The music is everything one might expect from Gibbs – marvelously melodic, beautifully crafted, devilishly cleverly arranged and superbly executed by both ensembles. Gibbs skillfully gets the best out of the big band setting, using the incredible dynamics it allows for and interposing multi-layered harmonic and rhythmic structures against each other to achieve an incredibly dramatic effect. Several excellent solo parts ornament the album like cherries on a cake and the different moods and tempi never allow for even a brief dull moment. The music reflects perfectly the composer’s versatility and open-mindedness, which have always been his forte. This is one refreshing and delightful musical experience that I’d hate my friends to miss; so nothing else remains to be said other that recommending this album wholeheartedly. You won’t regret it!

ROBIN KENYATTA ~ STOMPIN` AT THE SAVOY
WOUNDED BIRD 1658 (Barcode: 664140165823) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1974 Released: 2008

American saxophonist / flautist / composer Robin KenyattaFind albums by this artist first appeared on the Free Jazz scene in the mid-1960s playing as a sideman with such distinguished musicians as Bill DixonFind albums by this artist, Andrew HillFind albums by this artist and others. By the 1970s Kenyatta changed his musical direction and joined the Jazz-Rock and Funk movements, which were thriving at the time. He recorded a series of Jazz-Rock / Funk albums for the Atlantic label, of which this was the third and last. Supported by a fantastic crew of musicians, which included drummer Alphonse MouzonFind albums by this artist, bassist Ron CarterFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Lew SoloffFind albums by this artist and many others, Kenyatta continues the direction set by his previous albums, mixing styles and genres at will, manages to create a unique piece of music, which includes a rare combination of Funk, Jazz-Rock, World Music and Blues. KARIN KROG / STEVE KUHN ~ BREAK OF DAY
MEANTIME 22 (Barcode: 7041880102227) ~ NORWAY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2013 Released: 2014

This is a duo album by iconic Norwegian vocalist Karin KrogFind albums by this artist and American pianist Steve KuhnFind albums by this artist recorded in the US. American saxophonist Eric AlexanderFind albums by this artist and trumpeter Lew SoloffFind albums by this artist guest, each on three different tracks. The album presents fourteen tracks, all of which are Jazz standards. Three of the tracks feature lyrics written by Krog.

The music is a wonderful document of the rapport between Krog and Kuhn, which of course is present also on the other albums by the duo. The presence of the guests adds spark and glamour to the proceedings, but the duo offers everything needed to produce splendid Jazz just on their own of course.

Krog’s vocals are always highly intelligent and unique and Kuhn is a true virtuoso, who is able to get the most out of the piano, even if he uses a limited number of notes. Together they manage to enchant with their intimacy and heartfelt delivery.

Overall, this is a true gem of an album, which Jazz lovers should have a field day with. Brilliant piano technique and idiosyncratic vocals by one of the greatest European Jazz vocalists should be enough for everybody. Another great addition to the duo’s recorded legacy!

PATRICK WILLIAMS ~ COME ON AND SHINE
MPS 4029759097266 (Barcode: 4029759097266) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Funk Fusion

Recorded: 1977 Released: 2014

This is a reissue of a little known early album by the great American composer Patrick WilliamsFind albums by this artist, who is one of the leading cinematic composers for the American movie and TV industries, but also a great Jazz aficionado, especially as a leader of Big Bands and composer of Jazz-Classical Fusion recordings.

This album presents not one, but two different Jazz Big Bands, one from the East Coast (NY) and one from the West Coast (LA), performing seven original compositions by Williams, one by Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer and one standard, all arranged by Williams. The lineups of these bands read like a who´s who of the American Jazz scene at the time and include among others trumpeters Marvin StammFind albums by this artist and Lew SoloffFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Lou MariniFind albums by this artist and Ronnie CuberFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Dave GrusinFind albums by this artist, guitarist Steve KhanFind albums by this artist, bassist Tony LevinFind albums by this artist, drummer Grady TateFind albums by this artist and also the Belgian harmonica virtuoso Toots ThielemansFind albums by this artist.

The music is a mixture of Jazz and Funk / Groove, which was at the peak of its popularity at the time, not very ambitious musically but excellently performed and in retrospect still entertaining today. The Big Band arrangements are a classic example of the American school regarding Big Band arrangements. Overall a nice stroll down the memory lane…
Side Note
The legendary German MPSFind albums on this label (Musik Produktion Schwarzwald) label, founded by Hans Georg Brunner-SchwerFind albums by this artist (HGBS) in 1963, first as SABAFind albums on this label Records and later on from 1968 as MPS Records, was the most important independent European record label, which had an enormous contribution to the development of European Jazz. For many years MPS cooperated with the legendary German producer / author Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, my Friend and Mentor, whose visionary approach and open-mindedness brought the crème de la crème of the Jazz (in the broadest meaning of the word) musicians from all over the world to the label. Between 1963 and 1983 MPS produced about five hundred albums, many of which are among the most important Jazz recordings on this planet.

In 1983 the MPS catalog was sold to UniversalFind albums on this label, which sadly resulted in all those artistic treasures to almost disappear from the face of the earth – a situation not only tragic but culturally criminal. Universal reissued a part of the MPS albums (probably 128 titles) on CD between 1999 and 2011 under the "Most Perfect Sound Edition" moniker.

Since 2008 the German Promising MusicFind albums on this label label released some of the MPS recordings, but at a very slow pace.

In 2014 the German company Edel AG bought the MPS catalogue from Universal and released a series of 25 MPS albums on CD with a new slipcase graphic design, which brought all those excellent albums back to life. In 2015 Edel AG started to record and release new albums under the MPS moniker. In 2016 Edel AG released a series of 10 classic MPS albums on CD, which were beautifully remastered and re-packaged, presenting the original artwork and liner notes, as well as new liner notes and photographs. An obvious labor of love, these reissues are what the MPS catalogue truly deserves. This project was continued in 2017 with another series of 10 classic MPS albums released on CD. In later years some new reissues were released sporadically.

Over the years many SABA / MPS albums were reissued in Japan, which is often the only available source for these albums today, but that is a story in itself.
