  | BILL EVANS ~ SYMBIOSIS MPS 4029759115489 (Barcode: 4029759115489) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion Recorded: 1974 Released: 2016
This is a reissue of the seminal album by American pianist / composer Bill EvansFind albums by this artist, which was his only album for MPSFind albums on this label, recorded with his trio featuring bassist Eddie GomezFind albums by this artist and drummer Marty MorellFind albums by this artist and accompanied by an Orchestra conducted by the legendary German composer / arranger / conductor Claus OgermanFind albums by this artist, who also composed and arranged the two-movement concerto performed by the trio and the Orchestra. The Orchestra included members of the New York PhilharmonicFind albums by this artist and many top American Jazz musicians, like saxophonist Phil WoodsFind albums by this artist, flautist Hubert LawsFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Marvin StammFind albums by this artist and many others.
The music is a sensational example of early Jazz-Classical Fusion, combining elements of Twentieth Century European Classical Music and Jazz, masterly composed and arranged by Ogerman, who was one of the greatest orchestrators of his time and who boldly combined Classical music with Rock, World Music and Jazz, like no others before him and was revered by many musicians and music lovers around the world.
Evans, who was the greatest Jazz piano player ever, was a natural choice to become a part of this cross-genre project, as his enormous sensitivity and sublime virtuosity was always soaked with typical European melancholy and harmonic structures. His performances on this album, which is by far his most atypical recording, prove that his open-mindedness and vision allowed him to cope effortlessly with the unusual orchestral ambience this music required of him. His acoustic and electric piano sounds perfectly right every time it is heard on this album, creating an integral part of the overall orchestral reverberation.
The magnificent bass playing by Gomez is always side by side with Evans, who is known to have developed symbiotic relationships with his bassist over the years. Morell keeps a wonderfully precise and delicate time during the trio parts, as he always did with Evans. Since this was the Evans´ longest-lasting and most stable trio, no wonder their performances together are simply marvelous.
This awe-inspiring album lost absolutely nothing of its intrinsic beauty and expressiveness over the time, au contraire it still remains as one of the most perfect Jazz-Classical Fusion recordings ever, certainly as far as aesthetics, intelligence, sophistication and inspiration are concerned. Although probably Evans´ least know album, surely in America, it is definitely one of his most auspicious achievements, certainly more important from the historic point of view than his less ambitious, albeit always brilliant, albums recorded for the American market.
This is an absolute gem and an essential piece of every decent collection of good music. It is certainly wonderful to have it back in circulation. Side Note The legendary German MPSFind albums on this label (Musik Produktion Schwarzwald) label, founded by Hans Georg Brunner-SchwerFind albums by this artist (HGBS) in 1963, first as SABAFind albums on this label Records and later on from 1968 as MPS Records, was the most important independent European record label, which had an enormous contribution to the development of European Jazz. For many years MPS cooperated with the legendary German producer / author Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, my Friend and Mentor, whose visionary approach and open-mindedness brought the crème de la crème of the Jazz (in the broadest meaning of the word) musicians from all over the world to the label. Between 1963 and 1983 MPS produced about five hundred albums, many of which are among the most important Jazz recordings on this planet.
In 1983 the MPS catalog was sold to UniversalFind albums on this label, which sadly resulted in all those artistic treasures to almost disappear from the face of the earth – a situation not only tragic but culturally criminal. Universal reissued a part of the MPS albums (probably 128 titles) on CD between 1999 and 2011 under the "Most Perfect Sound Edition" moniker.
Since 2008 the German Promising MusicFind albums on this label label released some of the MPS recordings, but at a very slow pace.
In 2014 the German company Edel AG bought the MPS catalogue from Universal and released a series of 25 MPS albums on CD with a new slipcase graphic design, which brought all those excellent albums back to life. In 2015 Edel AG started to record and release new albums under the MPS moniker. In 2016 Edel AG released a series of 10 classic MPS albums on CD, which were beautifully remastered and re-packaged, presenting the original artwork and liner notes, as well as new liner notes and photographs. An obvious labor of love, these reissues are what the MPS catalogue truly deserves. This project was continued in 2017 with another series of 10 classic MPS albums released on CD. In later years some new reissues were released sporadically.
Over the years many SABA / MPS albums were reissued in Japan, which is often the only available source for these albums today, but that is a story in itself.

  | MAYNARD FERGUSON ~ PRIMAL SCREAM / NEW VINTAGE / CARNIVAL BGO 1142 (Barcode: 5017261211422) ~ CANADA ~ Jazz-Funk Fusion Recorded: 1975 - 1978 Released: 2014
This is a reissue of three albums by Canadian Jazz trumpeter / composer / bandleader Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist released on ColumbiaFind albums on this label during the late part of his stint with the label: "Primal ScreamFind albums with this title" (1976), "New VintageFind albums with this title" (1977) and "CarnivalFind albums with this title" (1978). These albums feature some of the best American Jazz musicians active at the time and mark Ferguson´s commercial success and popularity, well beyond the strict Jazz circles. Among the artists appearing on these albums are: keyboardists Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and Bob JamesFind albums by this artist, drummers Steve GaddFind albums by this artist and Peter ErskineFind albums by this artist, guitarists Eric GaleFind albums by this artist and Steve KhanFind albums by this artist, saxophonists David SanbornFind albums by this artist and Joe FarrellFind albums by this artist, trumpeters Marvin StammFind albums by this artist and Jon FaddisFind albums by this artist and many others.
The music is a mixture of original compositions by Ferguson and the composer / arranger Jay ChattawayFind albums by this artist, Jazz standards, film themes, popular songs and Classical pieces, all superbly arranged and executed by the Big Band / Orchestra, with soaring solos by Ferguson the guest stars. Although definitely on the lighter side of the Jazz spectrum, mixing Jazz with Funk, Rock and even Reggae, the music was always tasteful and impeccably executed.
Ferguson´s piercing trumpet sound is still one of the most recognizable sounds in American Jazz and remains unparalleled to this very day.
Personally I have always found the music of Ferguson to be both highly entertaining and artistically relevant, offering classy performances with stand the test of time with ease. Highly recommended!

  | GEORGE GRUNTZ ~ EXPO TRIANGLE MIGROS 6170 (Barcode: 7617028117660) ~ SWITZERLAND ~ Big Band Jazz Recorded: 1998 - 2000 Released: 2000
This is a brilliant album by Swiss pianist / composer / bandleader / activist George GruntzFind albums by this artist, which presents a collection of musical works connected to the EXPO exhibition in 1964, which originated a meeting between Gruntz and the Swiss composer Rolf LiebermannFind albums by this artist, which developed into a long lasting friendship until Liebermann’s death in 1999. The album presents two extended pieces performed by the George Gruntz Percussion EnsembleFind albums by this artist, a trio which comprises of Gruntz on piano and two drummers: Fabian KuratliFind albums by this artist and Raphael WollFind albums by this artist. Also included is a Symphony for Jazz Ensemble, composed by Lieberman and performed by the George Gruntz Concert Jazz BandFind albums by this artist, a Big Band comprising of famous European and American Jazz musicians, including trumpeter Marvin StammFind albums by this artist, trombonist Dave BargeronFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Chris HunterFind albums by this artist and bassist Mike RichmondFind albums by this artist among others. Finally, the original piece composed by Liebermann for the EXPO 64 and performed by 156 office machines is also included.
The music is a stupendous blast of Genius and European “out of the box” approach to music, which exploded in the 1960s, taking music in general, and Jazz music in particular, into another dimension altogether, as this album brilliantly demonstrates. Gruntz (who died in 2013) was one of the great heroes of European Jazz, a total musician who could play Classical music and Jazz with the same proficiency and his revolutionary ideas as composer and activist advanced the status of Jazz in Europe to the level of Art.
Overall, this unique album presents some little known aspects of the wide range of activities George Gruntz was involved with, and is a perfect tribute to this great Artist, whom I had the pleasure to meet many times. He was also blessed with a great sense of humor, which is also evident on this album. Jazz listeners, who are sure they have already heard everything, this album is a proper wakeup call.

  | GEORGE GRUNTZ / CONCERT JAZZ BAND ~ GLOBAL EXCELLENCE TCB 21172 (Barcode: 725095211727) ~ SWITZERLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2001 Released: 2001
This is a fabulous album by the Swiss pianist / composer / bandleader George GruntzFind albums by this artist and his Concert Jazz BandFind albums by this artist, which for many years was the best European Jazz Big Band / Orchestra. Gruntz was one of the great Godfathers of European Jazz and his many activities and contributions over the years advanced the Jazz idiom immensely. This album presents eight compositions, four of which were composed by Gruntz, three others were composed by members of his orchestra and one is a traditional Turkish melody. Gruntz wrote the arrangements and orchestrations of all the pieces. Among the musicians playing on this album one can find trombonist Dave BargeronFind albums by this artist, drummer Danny GottliebFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Marvin StammFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Chris HunterFind albums by this artist, bassists Mark EganFind albums by this artist and Mike RichmondFind albums by this artist, a. m. o.
The music, although kept within the mainstream Big Band setting, in incredibly innovative and original, clearly pointing out the many differences between American and European Big Band approach. The arrangements and orchestrations are complex and convoluted, constantly changing the dynamics and tempi, with less emphasis on the individual solos and more dedicated to the overall orchestral sound and interplay.
The inclusion of the Turkish tune is typical of Gruntz openness towards World Music, which he displayed many times throughout his career. Same applies to the inclusion of the tune composed by Russian trumpeter / composer Alexander SipiaginFind albums by this artist, which shows the great respect Gruntz always felt towards Jazz originating in Eastern Europe.
Overall this is a monumental piece of Big Band music, at its finest and most sophisticated form, which should be truly enjoyed by all connoisseurs of that Jazz sub-genre. For young musicians, especially those studying composition and arrangement, this is an open book of how things should be done.
Although Gruntz is sadly no longer with us, his wonderful music lasts and his extensive recorded legacy is a treasure chest of musical gems. Not to be missed!

  | PATRICK WILLIAMS ~ COME ON AND SHINE MPS 4029759097266 (Barcode: 4029759097266) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Funk Fusion Recorded: 1977 Released: 2014
This is a reissue of a little known early album by the great American composer Patrick WilliamsFind albums by this artist, who is one of the leading cinematic composers for the American movie and TV industries, but also a great Jazz aficionado, especially as a leader of Big Bands and composer of Jazz-Classical Fusion recordings.
This album presents not one, but two different Jazz Big Bands, one from the East Coast (NY) and one from the West Coast (LA), performing seven original compositions by Williams, one by Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer and one standard, all arranged by Williams. The lineups of these bands read like a who´s who of the American Jazz scene at the time and include among others trumpeters Marvin StammFind albums by this artist and Lew SoloffFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Lou MariniFind albums by this artist and Ronnie CuberFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Dave GrusinFind albums by this artist, guitarist Steve KhanFind albums by this artist, bassist Tony LevinFind albums by this artist, drummer Grady TateFind albums by this artist and also the Belgian harmonica virtuoso Toots ThielemansFind albums by this artist.
The music is a mixture of Jazz and Funk / Groove, which was at the peak of its popularity at the time, not very ambitious musically but excellently performed and in retrospect still entertaining today. The Big Band arrangements are a classic example of the American school regarding Big Band arrangements. Overall a nice stroll down the memory lane… Side Note The legendary German MPSFind albums on this label (Musik Produktion Schwarzwald) label, founded by Hans Georg Brunner-SchwerFind albums by this artist (HGBS) in 1963, first as SABAFind albums on this label Records and later on from 1968 as MPS Records, was the most important independent European record label, which had an enormous contribution to the development of European Jazz.
