IRINA MILAN ~ PAHAN KUKKIA
PRO 007 ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz & Poetry

Recorded: 1989 - 1990 Released: 1990

This is a wonderful Jazz & Poetry album by Finnish vocalist Irina MilanFind albums by this artist recorded with a formidable team of Finnish Jazz musicians headed by saxophonist / composer Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist, who composed and arranged all the music, and including also pianist Seppo KantonenFind albums by this artist, bassist Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist, drummer Jukkis UotilaFind albums by this artist and percussionist Mongo AaltonenFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight songs, seven based on poems by the French poet Charles BaudelaireFind albums by this artist and one by another French poet Maxime Du CampFind albums by this artist, all translated into Finnish language.

The music is absolutely stunning and one of my favorite Koivistoinen´s creations in his extensive recorded legacy. Despite the time, language and cultural gaps between the original poetry and the contemporary approach of the music, it seems that this music and the poetry were destined for each other.

Milan is a superb vocalist and her clear, precise and highly emotional delivery is a pure delight from start to finish. The instrumental parts are also sublime with Koivistoinen playing some of the most passionate concise solos of his career. Kantonen is ideal in his role as sensitive accompanist and also delivers some great solo spots. The rhythm section is perfect for the job, and the veterans play with precision and vigor.

Overall this is a brilliant album, which reflects the best qualities of Finnish Jazz and the Jazz & Poetry idiom at its full glory. For some strange reason this album is still available (from SvartFind albums on this label Records) so every true music connoisseur in his right mind should be ordering it right now! The fact that you don´t know Finnish means absolutely nothing in this case ;)

TASAVALLAN PRESIDENTTI / JUKKA HAURU & SUPERKINGS ~ POP LIISA VOL. 01 & VOL. 02
SVART 003 (Barcode: 6430050665647) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1973 Released: 2016

By the time this live broadcast was captured on tape Tasavallan PresidenttiFind albums by this artist, first Finnish Fusion / Prog Supergroup, already released three seminal albums and were about to release their fourth (and sadly last) album "Milky Way MosesFind albums with this title" recorded earlier in London. The lineup underwent another change when the new bass player Heikki VirtanenFind albums by this artist joined vocalist Eero RaittinenFind albums by this artist, guitarist Jukka TolonenFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist and drummer Vesa AaltonenFind albums by this artist.

The group performs just two extended pieces, full of lengthy instrumental improvisations kept in a jam session mood with a strong Fusion orientation.

The first piece is a composition by the legendary Jazz saxophonist Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist, which originates from his Jazz & Poetry album "ValtakuntaFind albums with this title", where it was sung by Raittinen, and which was also recorded on the a.m. fourth album in its English version with the lyrics translated by Jim PembrokeFind albums by this artist, a member of WigwamFind albums by this artist (yes there was a strong bond between these two pioneering Finnish groups).

The second piece is a rendition of one of the songs appearing on the third album "LambertlandFind albums with this title" composed by Tolonen. Considering that eighteen months passed between the original recording of this song and this broadcast, it is not surprising that this version is diametrically different from the original, and present a much more Jazz oriented approach which even explores some Free Form elements.

Overall this recording presents Tasavallan Presidentti at their absolute peak and offers an amazing example of European / Finnish Fusion created at the time.

Guitarist Jukka HauruFind albums by this artist was part of the Finnish Fusion scene and was closely related to the Tasavallan Presidentti gang, since he was substituting for Tolonen whenever needed between 1972 and 1974. He was considered as a superb guitarist, which the recordings herein prove beyond any doubt. He gathered a group of excellent top Finnish players for the purpose of recording his debut album "InformationFind albums with this title", which appears here jokingly renamed to SuperkingsFind albums by this artist. Again not surprisingly it includes two Tasavallan Presidentti members: Virtanen and Aaltonen, as well as violinist Juhani PoutanenFind albums by this artist, pianist Olli AhvenlahtiFind albums by this artist and percussionist Reino LaineFind albums by this artist.

Together the sextet performs four original compositions, three by Hauru and one by Poutanen, one of which appears on the a.m. debut album and three were unrecorded at the time. The music is even more Jazz oriented that the Tasavallan Presidentti set, offering much more freedom than the usual Fusion played at the time, with a strong Zappaesque tinge and obvious extended instrumental soloing.

Overall this is some of the most staggering music created in Europe in the early 1970s that one is able to hear and for Fusion and Jazz oriented Prog-heads this is an absolute must have!
Side Note
The Finnish independent label SvartFind albums on this label Records released an unprecedented series of albums called Pop Liisa and Jazz Liisa, which present priceless historical recordings of Finnish Rock, Progressive Rock, Jazz-Rock Fusion and Jazz music, recorded live and broadcasted from the Liisankatu Studios in Helsinki under the "Popstudio" and "Jazzstudio" monikers between 1972 and 1977. The studios were owned by the YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company), a public broadcasting service, which not only allowed the burgeoning Finnish music scene at the time to be exposed but also carefully archived the recordings for future generations. All this incredible music was previously unissued and collectively is probably the most important document of Finnish music from that period ever assembled.

The music was released on 36 LPs (Pop Liisa Vol. 01 to Vol. 18 and Jazz Liisa Vol. 01 to Vol. 18) and on 18 CDs with every two consecutive volumes combined on one CD.

The sound quality is absolutely superb, often better than the sound quality on the LPs released by these artists at the time. Many of the groups appearing on these albums never managed to record an album and these recordings are the only recorded legacy in existence of their activity. The released are accompanied by well researched and intelligent liner notes.

This archival project is an outstanding example of how Cultural Legacy should be treated as well as of exemplary dedication to record producing professionalism.

WIGWAM / TAIVAANVUOHI ~ POP LIISA VOL. 03 & VOL. 04
SVART 006 (Barcode: 6430050665692) ~ FINLAND ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1973 Released: 2016

By the time this live broadcast was captured on tape WigwamFind albums by this artist, the most celebrated Finnish Fusion / Prog Supergroup, already released three seminal albums and were about to release their fourth album "BeingFind albums with this title" recorded in the months preceding this show. The lineup was steady since the second album when the new bassist Pekka PohjolaFind albums by this artist joined vocalist / organist Jukka GustavsonFind albums by this artist, British expatriate vocalist / pianist Jim PembrokeFind albums by this artist and drummer Ronnie OsterbergFind albums by this artist. Following the release of the third album "FairyportFind albums with this title" Pohjola released his phenomenal debut album "Pihkasilma KaarnakorvaFind albums with this title" and Pembroke released his debut album "Wicked IvoryFind albums with this title", both in 1972 on LoveFind albums on this label Records. "Being" was to be the last studio album by this "classic" Wigwam lineup.

The group performs five pieces: a short intro (cover of a John LennonFind albums by this artist song), one piece from Pohjola´s debut composed by him, one song from the forthcoming "Being" album composed by Pembroke, the title song from the "Fairyport" album composed by Gustavson and finally one piece from Pembroke´s debut composed by him.

Overall this recording presents Wigwam at the absolute peak of the first period in the group´s history and offers an amazing example of European / Finnish Progressive Rock and Fusion created at the time.

In complete contrast to Wigwam, TaivaanvuohiFind albums by this artist was one of the many Finnish Prog / Fusion groups that despite their relative popularity as a live act did not manage record an album and disappeared into oblivion without leaving a trace. The group was formed in 1972 and after a long period of personal hiatus the lineup stabilized around the founding member guitarist Sami HurmerintaFind albums by this artist and included also vocalist Tarmo RoselundFind albums by this artist, saxophonist / flautist Pertti PaivinenFind albums by this artist, bassist Urpo SiitonenFind albums by this artist and drummer Ismo RaisanenFind albums by this artist. This is the lineup that is heard here playing live and which also started to record material for the debut album by the group, which sadly eventually never materialized.

The group performs five pieces, four of which are original compositions by Hurmerinta with lyrics by him and other group members and one is a composition by Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist. The music is a unique mixture of Prog, Fusion and Psychedelia featuring extensive guitar and saxophone soloing and judging by what can be heard here they would have perhaps created another Finnish gem album, but alas it was not to be.

Overall this is some of the most staggering music created in Europe in the early 1970s that one is able to hear and for Fusion and Jazz oriented Prog-heads this is an absolute must have!

JUKKA HAURU / NONO SODERBERG / FINNFOREST / ELONKORJUU ~ POP LIISA VOL. 05 & VOL. 06
SVART 009 ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1976 - 1977 Released: 2016

The "Popstudio" / "Jazzstudio" broadcasts were usually dedicated to one band / artist, but in some cases two acts were combined into one show, which allowed each of them just about twenty minutes to perform, as is the case on these two sessions.

Guitarist / composer Jukka HauruFind albums by this artist appeared already on the "Pop Liisa Vol. 01 & Vol. 02Find albums with this title" album some three years before this recording was captured. In the meantime he released his second album "EpisodeFind albums with this title" (on LoveFind albums on this label Records), but the band playing here was completely different from the crew that recorded the album, except for the violinist Juhani PoutanenFind albums by this artist. The other players are pianist Eero OjanenFind albums by this artist, bassist Tapani TamminenFind albums by this artist, drummer Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist and percussionist Ari ValtonenFind albums by this artist. They perform just one extended instrumental composition by Hauru, a six-part suite, which did not appear on any of his albums, a complex Jazz-Rock Fusion piece featuring lengthy Jazz improvisations.

Guitarist / composer Nono SoderbergFind albums by this artist released his debut album "NonoFind albums with this title" about a year before this recording was captured and two of the pieces from that album, which were composed by him, get expanded renditions here by a band which also includes saxophonist Reijo YlinenFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Esa KotilainenFind albums by this artist, bassist Harri MerilahtiFind albums by this artist, drummer Roope KoistinenFind albums by this artist and percussionist Esa RoswallFind albums by this artist. The music is more conventional Fusion oriented, with melodic themes and some Prog elements as well.

By the time the second broadcast presented here was captured (early 1977), the so called "first wave" of Finnish Progressive Rock / Fusion bands was almost over with Tasavallan PresidenttiFind albums by this artist already disbanded and WigwamFind albums by this artist about to be disbanded after switching to more Pop oriented music. This gave an opportunity to the "second wave" of Finnish Prog / Fusion bands like those appearing here to capture the scene.

FinnforestFind albums by this artist already had two excellent albums under their belt, the eponymous debut "FinnforestFind albums with this title" from 1975 and the follow up "Lahto MatkalleFind albums with this title" from 1976, both released on Love Records. Founded by the brothers: guitarist Pekka TegelmanFind albums by this artist and drummer Jussi TegelmanFind albums by this artist the band also included keyboardist Pertti PokkiFind albums by this artist and bassist Jarmo HiekkalaFind albums by this artist. They perform two pieces, which did not appear on the released albums, one by Pokki and the other by Jussi Tegelman. The music is strongly Fusion oriented, with some Prog elements present as well.

ElonkorjuuFind albums by this artist had a long history debuting with their album "Harvest TimeFind albums with this title" already in 1972, which was Blues-Rock oriented. Over time they disbanded and created the group again, changing the lineup and musical direction more towards Jazz-Rock Fusion and Funk. The lineup present here includes vocalist Kari TamminenFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Juha UnkilaFind albums by this artist, pianist Pekka TyniFind albums by this artist, guitarist Jukka SyreniusFind albums by this artist, bassist Veli-Pekka PessiFind albums by this artist and drummer Veikko NoutioFind albums by this artist. They perform three songs, all by Syrenius, which showcase the stylistic diversity of their music.

Overall this is some of the most staggering music created in Europe in the early to mid 1970s that one is able to hear and for Fusion and Jazz oriented Prog-heads this is an absolute must have!

KALEVALA / NIMBUS ~ POP LIISA VOL. 07 & VOL. 08
SVART 012 (Barcode: 6430050667153) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1973 - 1974 Released: 2016

The legendary and sadly short lived Finnish Prog / Fusion group KalevalaFind albums by this artist, which managed to record their debut album "People No NamesFind albums with this title" in 1972 about one year before the live radio broadcast presented on this record. The band included vocalist Harri SaksalaFind albums by this artist, multi-instrumentalist Sakari KukkoFind albums by this artist, guitarist Matti KurkinenFind albums by this artist, bassist Juha SalonenFind albums by this artist and drummer Alf ForsmanFind albums by this artist. They perform seven original songs, six of which were composed by Kurkinen and five featured lyrics by Saksala and one was an instrumental. The last song was written (music and lyrics) by Saksala.

Only one of the songs originates from the debut album, and all the rest of the material is new and was never released on record. All the lyrics are in Finnish in contrast to the debut album which featured lyrics in English. Kukko was not in the band when the debut album was recorded and his presence changed the sound and musical direction of the band significantly, adding marvelous Jazz-World Fusion accents and virtuosic flute / saxophone parts. The reworking of the song from the debut albums turns into a lengthy piece featuring superb soloing by Kukko and Kurkinen.

The lineup appearing here never managed to record an album and after Saksala and Kukko left the band the second album "Boogie JungleFind albums with this title" was released in 1975, but the music changed into straightforward Blues-Rock. A few months later Kurkinen was killed in a traffic accident and the band disappeared into oblivion.

NimbusFind albums by this artist were an even more obscure Finnish band, which did not record an album yet when this live radio broadcast was captured on tape. They managed to record the album "ObusFind albums with this title" later on in 1974, falling apart a few months thereafter. The band included vocalist Pasi SaarelmaFind albums by this artist, organist Pekka RautioFind albums by this artist, guitarist Harri SuilamoFind albums by this artist, bassist Juha JokirantaFind albums by this artist and drummer Matti JokirantaFind albums by this artist. They perform six pieces, five of which are original compositions by Suilamo (one instrumental and four songs with his lyrics) and a cover of a composition by Dave GreensladeFind albums by this artist with lyrics by Dave LawsonFind albums by this artist.

The music has both deep Prog roots with impressive organ work and Fusion elements echoed by the guitar playing. Considering the rarity of this material and the limited recorded legacy left by this group, these tracks are of course priceless!

Overall this is some of the most staggering music created in Europe in the early to mid 1970s that one is able to hear and for Fusion and Jazz oriented Prog-heads this is an absolute must have!

JUKKA TOLONEN BAND / HURMERINTA – SORVALI BIG BAND ~ POP LIISA VOL. 09 & VOL. 10
SVART 015 ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1975 - 1977 Released: 2016

Following the breakdown of the pioneering Finnish group Tasavallan PresidenttiFind albums by this artist in 1974, guitarist / composer Jukka TolonenFind albums by this artist continued his successful solo career, releasing albums on a regular basis. By the time his band was captured playing on this live broadcast, his fourth solo album "HystericaFind albums with this title" was about to be released soon after. The band, which also included saxophonist Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Esa KotilainenFind albums by this artist, bassist Heikki VirtanenFind albums by this artist and drummer Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist, perform four instrumental pieces, all originating from the "Hysterica" album and all composed by Tolonen. These live versions of the pieces are quite different from the studio versions and therefore their inclusion here is a perfect companion to the original album.

The music is almost completely Fusion oriented, with superb soloing by all the band members. Kotilainen´s keyboard performances are probably the only strong link present here to Progressive Rock, but the Fusion elements include also some Funk influences. Considering the fact that the bad collectively comprised of the "hottest" players on the Finnish scene, the fact that all the performances here are simply stellar.

Guitarist Sami HurmerintaFind albums by this artist, his wife vocalist Maarit HurmerintaFind albums by this artist and drummer Upi SorvaliFind albums by this artist put together the Hurmerinta – Sorvali Big BandFind albums by this artist in 1977, combining forces with many musicians they performed and recorded with earlier on, such as British vocalist Frank RobsonFind albums by this artist (ex-Tasavallan Presidentti), trumpeter Esko HeikkinenFind albums by this artist, Romanian trombonist Mircea StanFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Pertti PaivinenFind albums by this artist and Pentti LahtiFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Kari KuusamoFind albums by this artist, bassist Harri MerilahtiFind albums by this artist, and second drummer Roope KoistinenFind albums by this artist. This eleven-piece Big Band was not a typical Jazz Big Band, but rather a Brass Rock ensemble with a double vocal front. The Big Band existed for about a year between 1977 and 1978 and never recorded a studio album, so this live broadcast is their only recorded legacy.

The Big Band performs six songs, three of which were written by Jimi HendrixFind albums by this artist, two by Robson and one by Sami Hurmerinta. Hendrix was an obvious influence on these musicians and the legendary album by Gil EvansFind albums by this artist and his Orchestra "Plays The Music Of Jimi HendrixFind albums with this title" prompted them to form the Big Band in the first place. The music is of course typical of Brass Rock bands of the time, which combined Rock and Jazzy horns sound.

Overall this is some of the most staggering music created in Europe in the early to mid 1970s that one is able to hear and for Fusion and Jazz oriented Prog-heads this is an absolute must have!

ALWARI TUOHITORVI / KIRKA & ISLANDERS ~ POP LIISA VOL. 11 & VOL. 12
SVART 018 ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Soul Fusion

Recorded: 1974 - 1975 Released: 2016

The Finnish group Alwari TuohitorviFind albums by this artist, formed in 1968, went through a major personnel change in 1972 and the new lineup stabilized with lead guitarist Seppo AlajokiFind albums by this artist, guitarist Jukka RautiainenFind albums by this artist and bassist Mika SundqvistFind albums by this artist, all three sharing vocal duties, and drummer Raimo PikanenFind albums by this artist. When their live radio broadcast was captured they were already working on their eponymous debut album, which was released a while later, but none of the songs on that album were featured on the radio show, which presented nine songs covering some of their Prog era material, like the covers of songs by Wishbone AshFind albums by this artist and Beggars OperaFind albums by this artist and other Classic Rock items, as well as one original song by Alajoki. The material clearly marked their musical shift towards conventional Rock, following the general trend on the local Finnish scene, which after the first Progressive Rock wave was over became almost completely Rock dominated.

Vocalist KirkaFind albums by this artist (a. k. a. Kirka BabitzinFind albums by this artist) was a successful Finnish artist with a career spanning six decades. He changed styles over the years moving within the Pop and Rock idioms and recorded over sixty albums until his death in 2007. His appearance on the live radio broadcast catches him with his band The IslandersFind albums by this artist, a superb Soul-Rock outfit, expanded to a ten-piece smoking Brass Rock, which included Romanian (resident in Finland) trombonist Mircea StanFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Pentti LahtiFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Kassu HalonenFind albums by this artist, guitarist Esko VesterinenFind albums by this artist, bassist Matti TyniFind albums by this artist and drummer Juoni KestiFind albums by this artist, strengthened by three top Finnish Jazz musicians trumpeter Mike KoskinenFind albums by this artist and saxophonists Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist and Tapio TuominenFind albums by this artist. Together they perform eight songs, three covers by Pop / Soul / Blues songs (BeatlesFind albums by this artist, Otis ReddingFind albums by this artist, Edgar Winter BandFind albums by this artist) and five excellent original songs, two each by Stan and Halonen and one traditional Blues arranged by Stan.

Kirka´s superb voice and the spectacular band create some outstanding Jazz-Rock-Soul Fusion somewhat resembling the divine Joe CockerFind albums by this artist and his Mad Dogs & EnglishmenFind albums by this artist band with a slightly more Jazz feel.. The strength of this material and the performances turn this music into an instant classic, regardless of the Finnish lyrics, which don´t spoil the fun one bit. It is an absolute unadulterated fun from start to finish!

Overall this is some of the most staggering music created in Europe in the early to mid 1970s that one is able to hear and for Fusion and Jazz oriented Prog-heads this is an absolute must have!

UNISONO QUARTET / TAIVAANTEMPPELI ~ JAZZ LIISA VOL. 01 & VOL. 02
SVART 021 (Barcode: 6430050665753) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1973 Released: 2016

The Unisono QuartetFind albums by this artist, formed in 1970 by legendary Godfather of Finnish Jazz, saxophonist / composer Paroni PaakkunainenFind albums by this artist, had many lineup changes during its history and often included more than four members, but kept the "Quartet" as part of its name. This live radio broadcasts captured the band in a quartet setting with pianist Olli AhvenlahtiFind albums by this artist, bassist Make LievonenFind albums by this artist and drummer Reino LaineFind albums by this artist, all representatives of the top young Finnish Jazz players at the time. The band recorded its sole eponymous album only in 1975.

They perform four original compositions, two by Ahvenlahti and one each by Paakkunainen and Lievonen, all lasting about ten minuets each, which of course offers plenty of opportunities for extended soloing. The compositions, although based on melodic themes, are very open and tend to include Free Form explorations and odd time signatures, as appropriate for the musical climate of the time.

TaivaantemppeliFind albums by this artist was a short-lived sextet, which played sophisticated Jazz-Rock Fusion. It included two members of the Unisono Quartet, Ahvenlahti and Lievonen, and also flautist Matti JakolaFind albums by this artist, guitarist Pekka RechardtFind albums by this artist, drummer Upi SorvaliFind albums by this artist and percussionist Tapani IkonenFind albums by this artist. They never managed to record an album and this live radio broadcast is the only document of their legacy.

They perform three original compositions, all by Lievonen, which are between ten and fifteen minutes long and offer extensive soloing. Based on wonderfully melodic themes and performed by highly talented musicians, this is some on the best European Fusion of the period, unique due to the sublime flute parts and challenging musical versatility and forward thinking.

Overall this is some of the most staggering music created in Europe in the early to mid 1970s that one is able to hear and for European Jazz and Fusion connoisseurs this is an absolute must have!

The sound quality is absolutely superb, often better than the sound quality on the LPs released by these artists at the time. Many of the groups appearing on these albums never managed to record an album and these recordings are the only recorded legacy in existence of their activity. The released are accompanied by well researched and intelligent liner notes.

JUPU GROUP / JUKKA LINKOLA OCTET ~ JAZZ LIISA VOL. 05 & VOL. 06
SVART 027 (Barcode: 6430050667207) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1974 - 1977 Released: 2016

Jupu GroupFind albums by this artist was a short-lived Finnish experimental Fusion band led by violinist Juhani PoutanenFind albums by this artist and included also guitarist Janne LouhivuoriFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Jukka LinkolaFind albums by this artist, bassist Ilkka HanskiFind albums by this artist and drummer Upi SorvaliFind albums by this artist. On this live radio broadcast they also included saxophonist / flautist Sakari KukkoFind albums by this artist. The band recorded their sole album "AhmooFind albums with this title" almost a year after this session.

They perform five original compositions, two of which would appear later on their album in a studio version. Four of the compositions were composed by Poutanen and one by Kukko. Although Fusion oriented and played on electric instruments, the music includes many freely improvised passages and sounds mostly quite Avant-Garde.

Keyboardist / composer / bandleader Jukka Linkola is one of the central figures on the Finnish music scene to this day, with extensive involvement both in Jazz and Classical Music. He has a substantial recorded legacy, always of the highest quality. The Jukka Linkola OctetFind albums by this artist, which he led between mid 1970s and early 1990s, was just one of many ensembles under his leadership and throughout his career he always had empathy towards large ensembles, orchestras and Big Bands. The octet recorded three excellent albums: "ProtofunkFind albums with this title", "Lady In GreenFind albums with this title" and "Scat SuiteFind albums with this title", all worth investigating.

On this live broadcast session the octet includes also trumpeter Esko HeikkinenFind albums by this artist, trombonist Tom BildoFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Pentti LahtiFind albums by this artist and Teemu SalminenFind albums by this artist, bassists Ilkka Hanski, drummer Jukkis UotilaFind albums by this artist and percussionist Upi Sorvali. They perform four original compositions by Linkola and his arrangement of a traditional tune. The music floats between mainstream Jazz, Fusion and Funk and is highly melodic, offering an almost orchestral ambience and of course a lot of unadulterated fun!

Overall this is some of the most staggering music created in Europe in the early to mid 1970s that one is able to hear and for European Jazz and Fusion connoisseurs this is an absolute must have!

MEDUSA ~ RISING FROM THE ASHES
SVART 028 (Barcode: 6430050668051) ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1975 Released: 1977

This is the second album by American Prog band MedusaFind albums by this artist, which comprises of keyboardist / composer Donna BrownFind albums by this artist, guitarist Gary BrownFind albums by this artist, vocalist / guitarist Randy BobzienFind albums by this artist, bassist Phoenix JohnsonFind albums by this artist and drummer Dean McCallFind albums by this artist. The album presents six original songs all composed by Donna Brown and with lyrics written or co-written by her.

The band was originally formed in 1973 and recorded their debut album a couple of years later, which remained unreleased, except for a single. Forty years later the music was re-discovered and released as the band´s debut album "First Step BeyondFind albums with this title". Another couple of years later the band recorded this, their second album, which was released by the Finnish SvartFind albums on this label Records label.

The music is kept faithfully within the retro 1970s style and sound boundaries, based on the myriad of early Prog / Hard Rock bands active at the time, mostly those in the UK. Dominated by guitar riffs and heavy Hammond parts, supported by dynamic rhythm section, the band sounds as if it was teleported four decades into the future.

The songs are very solid and appropriate for the style, the melodies and the lyrics mimic the conventions; in short the music keeps the past alive, faithfully and respectfully, with no attempt to be original or innovative, which is perfectly acceptable as longs as there are no false pretentions. It is pretty sure that in a "blindfold test" situation anybody would guess this is a contemporary recording, which is an achievement in itself.

For the many fans of early Prog / Hard Rock this album is exactly what they expect, with excellent songs and stylish performances, regardless of when this music was recorded. I had a lot of fun listening to this!

OTON KVARTETTI / WASAMA–TUOMINEN / HIETANEN & HAUTA-AHO / WASAMA QUART ~ JAZZ LIISA VOL. 07 & VOL. 08
SVART 030 (Barcode: 6430050667252) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Soul Fusion

Recorded: 1973 - 1976 Released: 2016

The "Popstudio" / "Jazzstudio" broadcasts were usually dedicated to one band / artists, but in some cases two acts were combined into one show, which allowed each of them just about twenty minutes to perform, as is the case on these two sessions.

Oton KvartettiFind albums by this artist, led by violinist Otto-Tapio NevanlinnaFind albums by this artist, included also pianist Jukka LinkolaFind albums by this artist, bassist Jorma KoivulehtoFind albums by this artist and drummer Heikki TimonenFind albums by this artist, was a short lived group of young classically trained musicians who moved into Jazz and offered a wonderfully lyrical, but completely open music. They perform only one original composition by Linkola, which lasts for over twenty minutes and offers extensive soloing, and which progressively intensifies as the music continues, climaxing with a passionate group improvisation.

Wasama - Tuominen TrioFind albums by this artist consisted of saxophonist Tapio TuominenFind albums by this artist and brothers Olli-Pekka WasamaFind albums by this artist on bass and Jukka WasamaFind albums by this artist on drums. The trio played passionate Free Jazz, based on the powerful lead statements by Tuominen and intense rhythm section support by the Wasama brothers. They perform two original compositions, one credited to the trio members and the other to Jukka Wasama. Influenced by the European / British Free Jazz flourishing at the time, the trio was a superb example of the Finnish Free Jazz / Improvising Music scene, which had many excellent representatives at the time.

By the time the duo of pianist Pentti HietanenFind albums by this artist and bassist Teppo Hauta-AhoFind albums by this artist took part in this live radio broadcast they were both already established musicians, who started their careers a decade earlier. The music is classic mainstream Jazz, and the duo performs three original compositions, all by Hietanen, which are all about the wonderful interplay between them and showcase the virtuosic bass playing by Hauta-Aho.

The Wasama brothers added violinist / pianist Mikko-Ville Luolayan-MikkolaFind albums by this artist and guitarist Ilkka NiemelainenFind albums by this artist to form the Wasama QuartetFind albums by this artist, who played a mixture of modern Jazz and World Music elements, with a lot of space for improvisation. They perform three pieces, two original compositions by Niemelainen and their interpretation of the famous Jim PepperFind albums by this artist composition "Witchi Tai To" which was covered extensively. The quartet recorded two studio albums several years after their appearance on this live radio broadcast.

Overall this is some of the most staggering music created in Europe in the early to mid 1970s that one is able to hear and for European Jazz connoisseurs this is an absolute must have!

MIKE KOSKINEN ORCHESTRA / OTTO DONNER TREATMENT ~ JAZZ LIISA VOL. 09 & VOL. 10
SVART 033 ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1973 Released: 2016

Trumpeter / composer / bandleader Mike KoskinenFind albums by this artist was one of the most prominent figures on the Finnish Jazz scene in the early to mid 1970s, involved in a wide rage of stylistic explorations, from Free Jazz to more conventional post Bebop. He was one of the first Finnish Jazz musicians to study at the Berklee College of Music. He released his debut album "SunwebsFind albums with this title" on 1976 and moved to the US a year later.

This live radio broadcast presents Koskinen leading two ensembles, an octet and a big orchestra, which include the crème de la crème of the Finnish Jazz scene at the time: trombonists Mircea StanFind albums by this artist, Petri JuutilainenFind albums by this artist and Raimo NaatanenFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Kaj BacklundFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Juhani AaltonenFind albums by this artist, Paroni PaakkunainenFind albums by this artist, Pentti LahtiFind albums by this artist, Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist and Teemu SalminenFind albums by this artist, pianist Olli AhvenlahtiFind albums by this artist, guitarist Otto BergerFind albums by this artist, bassists Teppo Hauta-AhoFind albums by this artist and Heikki VirtanenFind albums by this artist, drummer Edward VesalaFind albums by this artist and percussionist Ari ValtonenFind albums by this artist.

They perform five compositions (three by the octet and two by the orchestra) four of which are original compositions by Koskinen and one is an arrangement of a Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist tune. The music portrays the diversity of Koskinen musical interests, with almost straightforward Jazz pieces and Free / Improvised orchestral experimentations, which are the more challenging and in retrospect interesting.

Composer / arranger / bandleader / trumpeter Otto DonnerFind albums by this artist is one of the Godfathers of Finnish Jazz and one of the greatest European Jazz composers. His ensemble Otto Donner TreatmentFind albums by this artist changed lineups according to specific project requirements and the large orchestral lineup caught on this live radio broadcast is sadly not fully known, but includes trumpeter Markku JohanssonFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Christer BoustedFind albums by this artist, Juhani Aaltonen (who also plays flute) and Paroni Paakkunainen, pianist Esko LinnavalliFind albums by this artist and others.

They perform four original compositions by Donner, which feature Bousted and Aaltonen as the primary soloists. The music is absolutely delightful and reflects Donner´s talents as composer and arranger, as well as the incredible level of musicianship by his band members. As everything else recorded by Donner, this is a first class musical gem.

Overall this is some of the most staggering music created in Europe in the early to mid 1970s that one is able to hear and for European Jazz connoisseurs this is an absolute must have!

PENTTI LAHTI / AHVENLAHTI – OJANEN / MIRCEA STAN / JUKKA RUOHOMAKI ~ JAZZ LIISA VOL. 11 & VOL. 12
SVART 036 ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1974 Released: 2016

The "Popstudio" / "Jazzstudio" broadcasts were usually dedicated to one band / artists, but in some cases two acts were combined into one show, which allowed each of them just about twenty minutes to perform, as is the case on these two sessions.

Saxophonist / composer Pentti LahtiFind albums by this artist was one of the modern Finnish Jazz pioneers and a prominent figure on the local scene. The band captured on this live radio broadcast finds him playing alongside trombonist Mircea StanFind albums by this artist, pianist Olli AhvenlahtiFind albums by this artist, bassist Ilkka WillmanFind albums by this artist and drummer Tapani IkonenFind albums by this artist. They perform two standards and an original composition by Stan, all kept pretty much close to mainstream Jazz with a bit of World Music tinge on the piece by Stan, who immigrated to Finland from Romania and incorporated some Romanian folklore influence in this tune.

The piano duo comprising of Olli Ahvenlahti and Eero OjanenFind albums by this artist is a classic example of the "Art of the Duo" and their mutual affinity and wonderful interplay are captured perfectly on this live radio broadcast. They perform two compositions, one an original by Ojanen and the other a Keith JarrettFind albums by this artist piece, which is then partly repeated again as an encore.

The quintet led by trombonist Mircea Stan is basically identical to the one led by Lahti on the first radio broadcast included here, except for the bassist Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist. This time they perform three original compositions by Stan, with some Romanian music influences but also including Latin and Hard Bop stylistics, typical of his work. This music is less mainstream oriented than the Lahti session and includes many open, Free Jazz oriented parts.

The synthesizer player Jukka RuohomakiFind albums by this artist combines electronic music and Jazzy improvisation sharing forces with trombonist Mircea Stan, moog player Olli Ahvenlahti and synthesizer player Erkki KurenniemiFind albums by this artist. Together they perform just one extended piece, co-composed by all four players and basically collectively improvised.

Overall this is some of the most staggering music created in Europe in the early to mid 1970s that one is able to hear and for European Jazz connoisseurs this is an absolute must have!

VIRTA ~ HURMOS
SVART 047 (Barcode: 6430050668570) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Ambient Fusion

Recorded: 2016 Released: 2016

This is the second album by Finnish experimental Jazz trio VirtaFind albums by this artist comprising of trumpeter / vocalist Antti HevosmaaFind albums by this artist, guitarist / vocalist Heikki SelamoFind albums by this artist and drummer Erik FrakiFind albums by this artist. All three utilize also a plethora of electronic devices. The album presents seven original compositions, all co-composed by the trio members.

The music is a unique amalgam of dense electronic and acoustic music, presenting beautifully melodic Nordic elements and contemporary ambient soundscapes. This kind of mixture of acoustic Jazz and strong electronic enhancement has become quite popular with many young European ensembles and seems to be able to create a new sub-genre, which develops consistently in the last few years.

The trumpet and guitar solos are superbly accompanied by dense layers of electronically generated sounds, which wonderfully accompany the sound of the acoustic instruments. The resulting music is hypnotic and beautifully atmospheric, keeping the listener in suspense and trans-like state of anticipation, which are intense but not overbearing. The solid and imaginative drum parts serve as the music heartbeat.

Overall this is a superb sophomore album and since it was released almost four years ago, I am eagerly awaiting their third album. In the meantime I strongly recommend to all lovers of young and blistering Jazz music to get a copy of this CD, released by the adventurous SvartFind albums on this label Record label, before it completely disappears from the market. A real gem!

EERO KOIVISTOINEN ~ MUUSA JA RUUSA
SVART 049 (Barcode: 6430050666866) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz & Poetry

Recorded: 1971 Released: 2016

This is a reissue of a delightful and little known Jazz & Poetry project (this time intended for children) by Finnish composer / saxophonist Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist who wrote the music to poems by Finnish poetess Kirsi KunnaksenFind albums by this artist. He enlisted a group of great vocalists and musicians to realize this album, which include vocalists Vesa-Matti LoiriFind albums by this artist and Eero RaittinenFind albums by this artist, bassist Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist, guitarist Hasse WalliFind albums by this artist, drummer Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist, pianist Eero OjanenFind albums by this artist, saxophonist / flautist Juhani AaltonenFind albums by this artist and many others. The album presents thirteen tracks, three of which are instrumentals and ten have poems as lyrics. All the music and arrangements are by Koivistoinen. This remastered edition offers also the texts of the poems and exact lineup of all the tracks as well as a nice (bilingual) article about the whole project.

Although obviously not a bona fide Jazz project, this album is a great document of Koivistoinen openness and diversity as a musician and composer. Exposing young children to quality music is a crucial part of their Cultural education, a fact that is almost completely neglected today with children being fed absolute infantile rubbish in the media. This album, almost fifty years old, is better and more challenging than most of what passes al children´s music today.

In retrospect this stuff sounds fresh and exciting today, completely contemporary. Even listeners not familiar with the Finnish language should be able to enjoy these fabulous musical stories and get intuitively what they are all about.

Overall this is a wonderful example of the ingenuity of Koivistoinen and the entire Finnish Jazz scene at the time, full of love and understanding of the young souls. Still delightful!

DAY IS OVER ~ DAY IS OVER
SVART 051 (Barcode: 6430065585169) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1975 Released: 2018

This is a reissue of the only album by one-off Finnish-Danish Jazz quintet Day Is OverFind albums by this artist, which comprised of Finnish saxophonist Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Esko LinnavalliFind albums by this artist and drummer Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist and Danish trumpeter Allan BotschinskyFind albums by this artist and bassist Niels-Henning Orsted PedersenFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight original compositions, one each by Koivistoinen, Linnavalli and Orsted Pedersen and the rest by other Finnish Jazz composers.

The quintet was formed during the Finnish Jazz Music Workshop, which was organized to prepare the legendary UMOFind albums by this artist Orchestra / Big Band in late 1974 and the album was recorded in February 1975 in Stockholm. Linnavalli commissioned the compositions for the album from several leading Finnish Jazz composers at the time and the musicians were exposed to the music without having time to rehearse it – the remarkable result proves the remarkable level of professionalism and talent by all the participants. Of course Orsted Pedersen was already one of the most revered and sought after bass players in Europe, playing and recording with all visiting American Jazz stars.

The music is all strictly melody based modern mainstream Jazz, but it has a distinct Scandinavian touch and the compositions reflect the unique Finnish music spirit, which can be heard distinctly on the recordings originating in the 1970s. The performances are brilliant from start to finish and offer a great opportunity to hear the brilliant work by Orsted Pedersen, who firmly keeps the music swinging smoothly.

Sadly the quintet disbanded as quickly as it was formed, leaving this sole album as its only recorded legacy. However, the UMO Orchestra was formed a few months after the Day Is Over adventure, and exists to this very day, producing some of the finest music out there.

Overall this is a wonderful piece of Finnish (and Nordic) Jazz history, well worth being remembered and still a great piece of quality enjoyable music. Warmly recommended!

FINNFOREST ~ ALPHA TO OMEGA: THE COMPLETE STUDIO RECORDINGS 1973-1980
SVART 056 (Barcode: 6430065585435) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Funk Fusion

Recorded: 1973 - 1980 Released: 2018

This is a reissue of the collected studio recordings by the Finnish Progressive Rock / Fusion ensemble FinnforestFind albums by this artist. It includes the remastered versions of the three LPs recorded by Finnforest and released on the legendary LoveFind albums on this label Records label: "FinnforestFind albums with this title" (1975), "Lahto MatkalleFind albums with this title" (1976) and "DemonnightsFind albums with this title" (1979). Additionally two singles, one compilation track and two previously unissued recording sessions, one before the debut album (1973) and another after the last album (1980), are also included. Beautifully packaged and with in depth liner notes this 3 CD set is a proper tribute to this great band.

Finnforest was formed in 1973 by twin brothers Pekka TegelmanFind albums by this artist, who played guitar and Jussi TegelmanFind albums by this artist, who played drums. The early version of the band included also keyboardist Jukka RissanenFind albums by this artist, bassist Jarmo HiekkalaFind albums by this artist and vocalist Ari MustonenFind albums by this artist. This quintet lineup plays on the six early tracks recorded in 1973.

The first album was recorded in Sweden in 1975 just by the trio of Tegelman brothers and Jukka Rissanen. The second album was also recorded in Sweden a year later, and featured the Tegelman brothers, Hiekkala on bass and keyboardist Jukka LinkolaFind albums by this artist, Second keyboardist Pertti PokkiFind albums by this artist plays on two tracks and a string section conducted by Otto DonnerFind albums by this artist plays on one track. The third album was recorded in 1978 and features only Jussi Tegelman from the original lineup and the rest are all new members: keyboardist Jarmo SavolainenFind albums by this artist, guitarist Jari RissanenFind albums by this artist, bassist Tuomo HelinFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Juhani AaltonenFind albums by this artist. Pekka Tegelman plays only on some of the tracks. The last session features all new musicians playing with Jussi Tegelman. All the music present on this set, except for one track, was composed by one or the other of the Tegelman brothers.

The early tracks are typical proto-Prog but starting with the tracks on the first album the music becomes absolutely stunning, with complex compositions and lengthy improvisations, slowly moving from Symphonic Prog into Jazz-Rock Fusion, with even more daring and challenging musical excursions.

In retrospect it is clear that Finnforest were one of the most important European Prog groups in the 1970s, creating some of the most exciting music that came out of Finland at the time, despite the fact that they had fierce competition as Finland at the time produced incredible amount of fascinating music. It is great to see these classic albums back in circulation and the bonus tracks are always a welcome incentive. This is definitely a must have for all true Prog and Fusion collectors from around the world.

The album presents nine original songs written mostly by composer Lauri KairaFind albums by this artist, who put the band together, and Niittynen with lyrics (in English) by Emma LarssonFind albums by this artist and Lasse KurkiFind albums by this artist.

The music is a nice and easy version of Smooth Jazz, with great melodies and perfect execution, copying the American model note by note and trick by trick. Mya has a soulful voice and Huber sings / raps no less soulfully and the rest of the band members are all excellent professionals.

Although not really my cup of tea, one has to admit that this album ticks like Swiss clockwork and pulls all the right strings on the emotional scale, and if one has to listen to this kind of music, this is something I can wholehearted recommend. At least it has melody, harmony and musical sense in comparison to what passes as music these days.

In short if you like Soul / Pop / Jazz music with lush melodies, this is something you should not miss!

JOE DAVIDOW ~ DIFFERENT MOMENTS – THE MUSIC OF JOE DAVIDOW
SVART 068 (Barcode: 6430050668396) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1978 - 1994 Released: 2016

This is an archival album presenting music composed by American (resident in Finland since 1978) pianist / composer / director Joe DavidowFind albums by this artist, recorded between 1978 and 1994 with different ensembles, which featured top Finnish Jazz musicians at the time, like saxophonist Paroni PaakkunainenFind albums by this artist, guitarist Hasse WalliFind albums by this artist, bassists Ilkka HanskiFind albums by this artist and Make LievonenFind albums by this artist, drummers Tom NekludowFind albums by this artist and Reino LaineFind albums by this artist and others. The music was recorded at the YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company) studio, except for one track which was recorded at the LoveFind albums on this label Records studio. The album presents ten original compositions, all composed and arranged by Davidow.

The music offers a wide stylistic variety between melodic mainstream Jazz and Avant-Garde Free Form, all bearing Davidow´s personal signature, which combines American Jazz tradition with modern European approach in a highly individual way. It often moves beyond the Jazz idiom into more cinematic vistas, which is hardly surprising considering Davidow´s role as director and composer of cinematic music.

The lasting cooperation between Davidow and Paakkunainen, who appears on all the tracks, discloses an obvious aesthetical proximity between the two. As the primary soloists the two exchange heated dialogues and lyrical laments, always on the same emotional wavelength.

Davidow´s piano playing, which is quite idiosyncratic, adds a unique color to the proceedings, as he is hardly an average Jazz player, often playing completely "against the rules", and always keeping faithful to his personal style.

The various rhythm sections consistently do a great job accompanying the saxophone / piano duo, regardless of the stylistic environment utilized on each of the tracks. Those are after all seasoned veterans, able to play anything and always finding the required mindset.

Considering the fact that this is the first time this music appears on record, this is a true gem and source of enjoyment, not to mention its historical significance. This album is therefore an absolutely essential piece of Finnish Jazz history and deserves to be heard!

KAIRON; IRSE! ~ RUINATION
SVART 071 (Barcode: 6430050669218) ~ FINLAND ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2017 Released: 2017

This is the third album by the Finnish Prog group Kairon; IRSE!Find albums by this artist. The band consists of bassist / vocalist Dmitry MeletFind albums by this artist, drummer Johannes KohalFind albums by this artist, guitarist Niko LehdontieFind albums by this artist and guitarist / bassist / keyboardist Lasse LuhtaFind albums by this artist. Saxophonist / clarinetist Andreas HeinoFind albums by this artist appears as guest. The album presents six original pieces, all co-credited to the group members with lyrics by Melet, Luhta and Jena HaapaharjuFind albums by this artist.

This album marks a significant change in the group´s sound, with the group´s "wall of sound" effect mellowed and appearing only from time to time and the vocals become audible, although still purposely distorted. The melodic content also becomes much clearer.

The music still combines Heavy Rock / Psychedelia / Ambient and some Jazz influences and the album again sounds interesting, surprising and unusual, continuing the path set by the two previous releases. The group´s originality escapes the accepted stylistic labeling, although the "shoegaze" idiom is commonly used to describe their music, which I personally find quite ridiculous. The group is evidently not trying neither to copy the original Prog sound and attitude, nor the New Prog derivative attempts, and wants to make their own stand, which of course is commendable.

The fact that Kairon; IRSE! Manage to re-invent their music time after time speaks volumes about their ambitious approach to music and a constant need to progress, which after all is the essence of Prog, and basically all music. The music does get a bit loud at times, and the volume knob is there to solve the problem, if it ever arises.

Overall this is obviously worth checking out, especially for the brave-hearted Prog followers, who are ready to try something new and unexpected. The group released so far one more album after this one, so there is obviously a consistency and continuity here – well done!

VARIOUS ARTISTS ~ ETEENPAIN! – COMPLETE 1966-1970
SVART 075 (Barcode: 6430050669331) ~ FINLAND ~ Special Products

Recorded: 1966 - 1970 Released: 2016

This fabulous Box Set presents a reissue of the complete output by the independent / underground Finnish record label Eteenpain!Find albums on this label (Eng. Forward!), founded in 1966 by musicologist / author Pekka GronowFind albums by this artist and singer / songwriter M. A. NumminenFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. Mauri Antero NumminenFind albums by this artist) in order to present mainly the eclectic and prolific recordings by Numminen, but also many other recordings. In addition to all the releases this collection was expanded to include also unreleased material from the label´s vaults.

Eteenpain! was one of the first independent European record labels and its releasing policy was definitely most eclectic and plainly "wild" in every respect. As a result the music including in this Box Set includes a completely nutty mixture styles and genres, including Folk, Pop, Rock, Blues, Jazz, Avant-Garde Rock, comedy, parody and even songs in Esperanto language. Such wonderful diversity and openness characterized of course the 1960s and could have happened only then, with complete disregard of public opinion or commercial considerations.

By the end of the 1960s the label slowly run out of steam as a result in the changes in the local music industry and social structure / cultural climate. By 1970 the label owners called it quits and the recording archives were passed to the other legendary Finnish record label LoveFind albums on this label Records (also founded in 1966), which occasionally used some of it in their releases. Following Love Records bankruptcy in 1979 the archives returned back to Numminen.

This Box Set is a wonderful document of an era long gone, where Avant-Garde / underground Culture was flourishing and was able to find dedicated support, which enabled its creative output to be published, which today is of course implausible. There are certain parallels between Eteenpain! and the New York ESPFind albums on this label record label founded in 1963 by Bernard StollmanFind albums by this artist, however as much as Stollman´s openness and vision were of course extraordinary, especially in America, his label was relatively more "conservative" in the choice of material in comparison to the wonderful weirdness that characterized what Gronow and Numminen were doing.

Overall this Box Set is a superb document, not only of the music but more importantly of the Cultural climate of the late 1960s in Finland and beyond. Kudos are due to SvartFind albums on this label Records for undertaking this mammoth project and their dedication to preserve Culture.

HEIKKI SARMANTO ~ OPEN SKIES
SVART 080 (Barcode: 6430050669690) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2011 - 2012 Released: 2017

This is a wonderful solo piano album by veteran Finnish pianist / composer / bandleader and my dear friend Heikki SarmantoFind albums by this artist. The 2CD album presents twenty two tunes, nine of which are original compositions by Sarmanto and thirteen are his interpretations of (more or less) standards. The music was recorded live at various concerts over a period of several months and resulted in no less than 1,200 recorded pieces, from which these twenty two were selected.

I have had the enormous pleasure to follow Sarmanto´s career for the last half a Century, seeing him developing his personal style and aesthetics, which never failed to amaze and delight, travelling across a wide cross-genre mass of music, touching on Jazz-Rock Fusion, Gospel, modern Jazz, Classical and Chamber Music and others and now also solo piano performances. The accumulated contribution of Sarmanto´s productivity as a composer, his genius as a performer and improviser and his recording and concert careers and invaluable and constitute a most significant part of the European Jazz idiom in particular and European Culture on the whole.

Although the original idea of this album was to present solo piano renditions of Sarmanto´s vast legacy as a composer, the final result combines this original concept with his tribute to the American Songbook, which encapsulates the development of Jazz in the US, and other musical sources, which shaped his Artistic personality over the years.

Sarmanto´s interpretation of standards is very varied, moving between close proximity to the original and quite abstract improvisations, often hiding the original almost entirely. It is up to the listener to discover the original chord changes and the melody thread in the case of the more nonrepresentational interpretations, which is always a great intellectual fun of course.

Solo piano music, especially that of an improvised nature, is never an easy listening, and requires from the listener as much dedication, attentiveness and love as those put by the musician into creating them. As a result, listening to this album in its entirety is a challenge, but of course an immense source of joy and satisfaction. Sarmanto is a very unconventional piano player, and although he maintains a close connection with melody and above all musical coherence, he can, and often is, quite demanding, in a most delightful way I might add.

I urge every true music connoisseur to grab this extraordinary album and put the music on as soon as possible. Pour yourself a glass of some great wine or Special Reserve cognac (can´t hurt) and let yourself be immersed within this magical music; satisfaction guaranteed!

Thank you my Friend for sharing your gift with the world!

JUPU GROUP ~ AHMOO
SVART 081 (Barcode: 6430065585442) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1975 Released: 2018

This is a reissue of the only album by the short-lived Finnish Fusion / Progressive Rock Jupu GroupFind albums by this artist, which included violinist Juhani PoutanenFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Jukka LinkolaFind albums by this artist, guitarist Janne LouhivuoriFind albums by this artist, bassist Ilkka HanskiFind albums by this artist and drummer Upi SorvaliFind albums by this artist. On three tracks a string trio is added to the lineup. The album presents six original tracks, three by Poutanen and one each by Sorvali, Hanski and Linkola.

The music comprises of complex cross-genre explorations, amalgamating Rock, Jazz and Classical Music, with a strong Fusion feeling, with the violin at the centre, which of course was rather unusual. All the compositions are beautifully melodic, serving as ideal vehicles for the lengthy soloing by all group members. The three tracks with the string section have a more Classical Music atmosphere, but remain faithful to the Fusion spirit of the album.

The album is a wonderful example of Finnish instrumental music created at the time (mid-1970s), which was bursting with ideas and wonderful creativity. These young musicians proved that brilliant music can be created anywhere in the world and the music remains completely relevant today, losing absolutely nothing of its significance, artistic quality and intrinsic elegance.

It is great to have this gem available again, as it absolutely deserves to be heard today by the young generation of music lovers. Thanks to SvartFind albums on this label Records for keeping the memory alive. For European Fusion fans this album is an absolute music of course!

ROYHKA / PYYSALO / MAARIT ~ TURMION SUURHERTTUA
SVART 084 (Barcode: 6430050669867) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz & Poetry

Recorded: 2016 Released: 2017

This is a wonderful album by Finnish Rock vocalist / songwriter / author Kauko RoyhkaFind albums by this artist, recorded with Jazz vibraphonist / composer Severi PyysaloFind albums by this artist and a great band that comprises of drummer Jussi LehtonenFind albums by this artist, bassist Juho KivivuoriFind albums by this artist, guitarist Varre VartiainenFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Jukka EskolaFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Joonatan RautioFind albums by this artist and trombonist Heikki TuhkanenFind albums by this artist. The superb singer MaaritFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. Maarit HurmerintaFind albums by this artist) appears on selected tracks. The album presents ten original songs, all composed and arranged by Pyysalo with lyrics by Royhka.

Royhka enjoys a highly successful career in Rock since early 1980s, with a long list of albums under his arm, and in parallel a career as author with several books over time. He is especially revered for his strong, often provocative lyrics, which can easily be categorized as sung poetry.

The decision to record this album, which crosses boldly into the Jazz idiom, turns out to be extremely creative, and these ten songs are all masterpieces of composition and arrangement, and combined with Royhka´s idiosyncratic voice and theatric delivery, are absolutely brilliant. The music is spiced with some Jazz soloing, just enough to define the musical environment, but not dominating the proceedings.

This album brings fond memories of many similar projects that dominated the Finnish Jazz scene in the late 1960s and 1970s, and were abandoned later on, as the Jazz scene (and music scene in general) changed into less adventurous turf.

Overall this is a superb album, which offers brilliant music, masterly arranged and performed, which works perfectly even for people like myself, who do not speak Finnish. The delivery and the music are strong enough even without the textual layer. An absolute must for Jazz & Poetry lovers!

MATTI JARVINEN / CASCADE / MIKE WESTHUES BAND / FYYRALYYRA ~ POP LIISA VOL. 13 & VOL. 14
SVART 085 (Barcode: 6430065583080) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1976 - 1977 Released: 2017

The "Popstudio" / "Jazzstudio" broadcasts were usually dedicated to one band / artist, but in some cases two acts were combined into one show, which allowed each of them just about twenty minutes to perform, as is the case on these two sessions.

Guitarist / composer Matti JarvinenFind albums by this artist appeared on the Finnish scene for a brief period, which allowed him to record just one album called "Martin LevyFind albums with this title" and a few concerts, before he decided to leave the music business completely and disappeared into oblivion. This live broadcast is the only glimpse in existence of his concert activities. He is supported by keyboardist Kari KuusamoFind albums by this artist, bassist Harri MerilahtiFind albums by this artist and drummer Upi SorvaliFind albums by this artist. Together they perform four original songs, all by Jarvinen, which originate from the a.m. album. Musically this material is Prog oriented and offers highly melodic compositions based on interesting Rock riffs. These live versions feature impressive guitar and keyboards soloing.

The group CascadeFind albums by this artist, fronted by the double female vocal line of Ami EspelundFind albums by this artist and Marjo-Riitta KervinenFind albums by this artist included also keyboardist Kari Kuusamo, guitarist Pekka LeminenFind albums by this artist, bassist Renne AngelvuoFind albums by this artist and drummer Heikki LyttinenFind albums by this artist. They perform four covers of Pop songs (three of which are by Stevie WonderFind albums by this artist), nicely arranged with a slight Jazzy feel. It is the most Pop oriented material in the entire Pop Liisa series.

American singer / songwriter Mike WesthuesFind albums by this artist lived in Finland twice for relatively short periods, during which he managed to record four albums as a leader. This live broadcast finds him performing five songs from the two albums he recorded for LoveFind albums on this label Records, all written by him. He is supported by pianist Heikki HiekkalaFind albums by this artist, guitarist Dave LindholmFind albums by this artist, bassist Make LievonenFind albums by this artist, and drummer Urpo LeppanenFind albums by this artist. Tiitta SpoutFind albums by this artist sings backing vocals. The music is pretty straightforward American Country Rock, but is excellently executed, being no less exciting than the same kind of music was played across the pond.

FyyralyyraFind albums by this artist is by far the most interesting group in this collection, a Jazz-World Fusion quintet fronted by two multi-instrumentalists Jouni KoskimakiFind albums by this artist and Hannu LehtorantaFind albums by this artist, who among the two of them played a plethora of string and wind instruments, guitarist Arto KakkoFind albums by this artist, bassist Hannu TahtelaFind albums by this artist and drummer Juoni KestiFind albums by this artist. Just before this live broadcast was captured they recorded their eponymous debut album, which sadly turned out to be their sole recorded output. They perform four pieces, two composed by Lehtoranta and two folk tunes (one Irish and one Finnish) arranged by Lehtoranta and Koskimaki. They are often compared to the legendary Finnish group PiirpaukeFind albums by this artist, who pioneered the local Jazz-World Fusion idiom.

Overall this is some of the most staggering music created in Europe in the early to mid 1970s that one is able to hear and for Fusion and Jazz oriented Prog-heads this is an absolute must have!

ORFEUS / HASSE WALLI & ZEUS ~ POP LIISA VOL. 15 & VOL. 16
SVART 088 (Barcode: 6430065583523) ~ FINLAND ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1972 - 1973 Released: 2017

The Finnish Rock band OrfeusFind albums by this artist, formed in 1971, followed the same path that many other similar bands also traveled on, starting as an impressive Progressive Rock outfit and by the mid 1970s switching gradually into more commercial, mainstream Rock oriented act. As with the Orfeus set, this is a wonderful reminder of what Classic Rock / Prog sounded at their best. This "Popstudio" broadcast is the earliest of those included in this wonderful series.

TUSMORKE ~ HINSIDES
SVART 089 (Barcode: 6430050669744) ~ NORWAY ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2015 - 2016 Released: 2017

This is the fourth album by Norwegian Prog group TusmorkeFind albums by this artist, which consists of twin brothers: vocalist / bassist Benedikt MomrakFind albums by this artist and vocalist / flautist Kristoffer MomrakFind albums by this artist (both playing a plethora of other instruments between them), keyboardist Lars Fredrik FroislieFind albums by this artist (who is also a member of other prominent Norwegian Prog bands like WobblerFind albums by this artist, White WillowFind albums by this artist and others) and drummer Martin Nordrum KneppenFind albums by this artist (also a member of Wobbler). Sverre JensenFind albums by this artist plays several instruments and adds some vocals and Morten ObyFind albums by this artist plays congas on one track. The album presents five original songs, all written by the Momrak brothers,

By the time this album was recorded Tusmorke crystalized their group sound and musical direction, emerging as one of the most important contemporary Prog groups. The music, based on the tradition set by Prog Godfathers in the late 1960s / early 1970s, which is cautiously preserved, is however completely original, and offers an updated version of the original Prog sound and aesthetics.

The music has a distinct Medieval atmosphere, with the flute and a plethora of analog synthesizers perfectly setting the aural background. The album’s magnum opus – a twenty-three+ minutes long suite – references to the 14th Century Black Death pandemic (how appropriate for the times this text is written), St. Sebastian and his role as protector against plague. The lyrics include Latin texts from Medieval sources, and the entire piece sounds like a soundtrack of a sacral rite. Beyond the strictly musical aspects of the album, which are all wonderful, it is great to see the intellectual involvement invested in this project, again something typical of the overall approach of the early Prog idiom.

For fans of the original Prog, the music of Tusmorke is a true blessing and as the people who experienced that music at the time it was born, a most welcome resurrection and a relief of the shallow (musically and intellectually) Neo-Prog attempt to carry on. Quite possibly the young listeners exposed to this music might also seek out some of the original Prog recordings, which really lost nothing of their charm over the five decades that passed so quickly.

This album is an absolutely essential listening experience and as such is wholeheartedly recommended. Hats off!

The live radio broadcast captured here presents Koivistoinen and his quartet: pianist Heikki SarmantoFind albums by this artist (another iconic figure of the Finnish Jazz scene), his brother Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist on bass and drummer Reino LaineFind albums by this artist, hosting the superb Belgian guitarist Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, who visited Finland at the time. On one track the quintet is expanded to a sextet when joined by the Bulgarian trumpeter Reicho IvanovFind albums by this artist.

They perform five original compositions, two composed by Catherine, and one each by Danish trumpeter Palle MikkelborgFind albums by this artist, Koivistoinen and Ivanov. The music is highly electric (Sarmanto plays electric piano, Catherine electric guitar and even Ivanov plays an electric trumpet – see the Fusion group Eleventh HouseFind albums by this artist led by Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist, which had a similar lineup), which results in a charged Fusion fury, comparable to the best work of Mahavishnu OrchestraFind albums by this artist, and offering some of the finest quality of the genre ever recorded.

I am happy to say that Koivistoinen and Heikki Sarmanto have been my friends since decades and I had the immense pleasure to write liner notes for their albums.

The Nordjazz QuintetFind albums by this artist was a collaborative ensemble combining Jazz musicians from the Nordic countries (as opposed to Scandinavian, which means only Denmark, Norway and Sweden and not Finland and Iceland). The lineup changed over time and the one captured on this live broadcast includes Finnish saxophonist / flautist Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist, Danish pianist Ole Kock HansenFind albums by this artist, Norwegian guitarist Nils Petter NyrenFind albums by this artist, Swedish bassist Kjell JanssonFind albums by this artist and Icelandic drummer Petur OstlundFind albums by this artist.

They perform three original compositions, one composed by Hansen and two composed by Finnish Jazz musicians, both keyboardists / composers, not members of the ensemble: Olli AhvenlahtiFind albums by this artist and Jukka LinkolaFind albums by this artist. The music serves as basis for extended improvisations within the Fusion oriented idiom, featuring extensive soloing.

These two sessions are ideally matched together and this CD is definitely one of the strongest and most coherent within the Jazz Liisa series.

Overall this is some of the most staggering music created in Europe in the early to mid 1970s that one is able to hear and for European Jazz connoisseurs this is an absolute must have!

PIIRPAUKE / TAPIO TUOMINEN TRIO / PORI BIG BAND / TAPIOLA BIG BAND ~ JAZZ LIISA VOL. 15 & VOL. 16
SVART 097 (Barcode: 6430065583509) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1975 - 1977 Released: 2017

The "Popstudio" / "Jazzstudio" broadcasts were usually dedicated to one band / artists, but in some cases two acts were combined into one show, which allowed each of them just about twenty minutes to perform, as is the case on the first show included here. The other two sessions were recorded on different dates.

PiirpaukeFind albums by this artist, founded in 1974 by saxophonist / keyboardist / composer Sakari KukkoFind albums by this artist and still active today forty-five years later, was one of the first European Jazz-World Fusion ensembles. It includes initially also guitarist Hasse WalliFind albums by this artist, bassist Antti HyttiFind albums by this artist and drummer Jukka WasamaFind albums by this artist. Synthesizer player Otto RomanowskiFind albums by this artist appeared as an associate member. This live radio broadcast captures the group before the release of their eponymous debut album, which created quite a stir at the time. They perform three pieces; one composed by Kukko and two unique arrangements by the group members of folk songs: one Romanian and the other Karelian in origin. Both folk songs were included on the a.m. debut album. The music is a wonderful amalgam of modern Jazz, sometimes with freely improvised parts, and folkloristic inspirations, which will become the modus operandi of the group.

Saxophonist Tapio TuominenFind albums by this artist and his trio, which also included bassist Jorma KoivulehtoFind albums by this artist and drummer Jukka WasamaFind albums by this artist, represent the Finnish Free Jazz movement, which flourished in the 1970 and led to high local activity as well as international cooperation with other European players, including those from Poland and other East European countries. The trio plays three original compositions credited to Wasama, but obviously presenting a group improvisation effort. Similarly to the material presented by the Wasama - Tuominen TrioFind albums by this artist, presented on an earlier release of the "Jazzstudio" sessions, the music is typical of European Free Jazz at the time, highly inventive and emotional, which lost nothing of its power over time.

The 1970s were hay days for the Finnish Big Bands and several were active in parallel at the time, which for a country of the size of Finland was absolutely phenomenal. One of the factors that enabled this to happen was the solid local and national financial support available for Arts at the time, and combined with the number of young Jazz musicians flooding the scene and involvement of semi-professional / amateurs evolved into a heaven on earth for Big Band enthusiasts.

Pori Big BandFind albums by this artist, founded in 1971 and still active today, was led over the years by top Finnish musicians / instrumentalists and has an impressive legacy of recordings to its credit. It is traditionally featured during the annual Pori Jazz Festival. On this live radio broadcast the Big Band was conducted by bassist / composer Markku KokkoFind albums by this artist and performed two original compositions: one by trombonist / composer Kaj BacklundFind albums by this artist and one by Kokko.

Tapiola Big BandFind albums by this artist, founded in 1970 by Martti LappalainenFind albums by this artist and still active today, included many top Finnish musicians over time, some of which were double billing as members of the Mother Ship of the Finnish Big Band scene, the UMOFind albums by this artist Orchestra. On this live radio broadcast the Big Band was conducted by Lappalainen and included a crème de la crème lineup of Finnish Jazz musicians and performed two pieces: one original composition by Mike KoskinenFind albums by this artist and an arrangement of a folk song by Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist.

Overall this is some of the most staggering music created in Europe in the early to mid 1970s that one is able to hear and for European Jazz connoisseurs this is an absolute must have!

AALTONEN, HELASVUO, HAUTA-AHO, VESALA / EDWARD VESALA ENSEMBLE ~ JAZZ LIISA VOL. 17 & VOL. 18
SVART 100 (Barcode: 6430065583516) ~ FINLAND ~ Avant-Garde Jazz

Recorded: 1973 - 1974 Released: 2018

The two "Jazzstudio" broadcasts compiled on this CD focus on the iconic figure of drummer / composer / bandleader and Godfather of modern Finnish Jazz, Edward VesalaFind albums by this artist, who is probably the most famous Finnish Jazz musician outside of his native country. Born in 1945, Vesala was active on the local Jazz scene since the late 1960s and until his tragically premature death in 1999 at the ridiculous young age of 54. His premiere recording was the little known album "NykysuomalaistaFind albums with this title" (Contemporary Finnish) from 1969 and the full debut "NanaFind albums with this title" came a year later. In 1972 he took part in his first ECMFind albums on this label album, the Jan Garbarek´s "TriptykonFind albums with this title" and soon after recorded his debut album for the label "Nan MadolFind albums with this title". He recorded five more albums for ECM and also participated on albums by Polish trumpeter Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist. On the whole he left an impressive recorded legacy, including releases on his own LeoFind albums on this label Records.

The first session presents the Edward Vesala trio, with bassist Teppo Hauta-AhoFind albums by this artist and pianist Esa HelasvuoFind albums by this artist on one track composed by him and then with saxophonist Juhani AaltonenFind albums by this artist (who replaces Helasvuo) on two tracks, both composed by Vesala. Whereas the first track is still pretty conventional, the two other tracks are mostly freely improvised and explode with energy and spontaneous exploration as appropriate for Avant-garde at its best.

The second session presents the Edward Vesala EnsembleFind albums by this artist, a collection of top Finnish Jazz improvisers at the time: trumpeter Simo SalminenFind albums by this artist, trombonist Mircea StanFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Juhani Aaltonen, Paroni PaakkunainenFind albums by this artist and Pentti LahtiFind albums by this artist, bassist Teppo Hauta-Aho, electric bassist Make LievonenFind albums by this artist and Antero HonkanenFind albums by this artist who added some electronic effects on one track. This lineup is very similar to the lineup that recorded the a.m. ECM debut a few months after this session was recorded. They play three stacks, all by Vesala, all of which were later recorded for that album. In addition a short interview with Vesala in also present, in Finnish of course, which makes it sadly accessible only to Finnish speaking audience. (A transcript in English would have been most welcome).

The music is spectacular and breathtaking, a true Avant-garde masterpiece combining composed and group-improvised parts, mystic Nordic moods and brilliant performances by these excellent musicians. These versions of the material are quite different from the recorded versions, which makes this session especially valuable.

These two sessions are some of the most important documents of Finnish Jazz and are definitely among the strongest releases in the entire Jazz Liisa series.

Overall this is some of the most staggering music created in Europe in the early to mid 1970s that one is able to hear and for European Jazz connoisseurs this is an absolute must have!

SUKELLUSVENE ~ VESI- JA LINTUMUSIIKKIA
SVART 106 (Barcode: 6430065585176) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1978 Released: 2018

This is a reissue of the only album by the Finnish Jazz / Fusion sextet SukellusveneFind albums by this artist, which comprised of saxophonist Lassi TalasmoFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Kari LitmanenFind albums by this artist, guitarists Jukka MakinenFind albums by this artist and Tapani TuomanenFind albums by this artist, bassist Pekka MuhliFind albums by this artist and drummer Timo KotinevaFind albums by this artist. The album, released on the legendary LoveFind albums on this label Records, presented six original compositions, two each by Litmanen and Tuomanen and one each by Makinen and Muhli. This remastered and expanded edition adds two tracks from a single with non-LP tracks.

Although established in the early 1970s, it took the group almost eight years to record their album, following several lineup changes, and it sadly disbanded soon after. Nevertheless this sole album remains as one of the finest Finnish Fusion recordings of the 1970s, and lost nothing of its charm over the years. Full of superb compositions and fiery performances it is a true gem of the period and a wonderful testament of the incredible Finnish musical scene that flourished at the time.

Although obviously Fusion oriented and with a distinct Fusion sound due to the use of synthesizers, guitars and electric bass, it offers also a lot of Jazz spirit within the improvisations and Progressive Rock tendencies reflected in the melodic approach. As such this music is highly attractive to a wide range of music connoisseurs with cross-genre tendencies.

Overall this is a wonderful piece of Finnish Jazz / Fusion history, well worth being remembered and still a great piece of quality music. Warmly recommended and an absolute must to European Jazz enthusiasts. As usual kudos to SvartFind albums on this label Records for saving this gem from oblivion!

EERO KOIVISTOINEN ~ ILLUSION
SVART 124 (Barcode: 6430065582939) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2012 - 2015 Released: 2017

This is the second album by a quartet led by Finnish Jazz Giant, saxophonist / composer Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist with three representatives of the younger generation of the Finnish Jazz scene: pianist Alexi TuomarilaFind albums by this artist, bassist Jori HuhtalaFind albums by this artist and drummer Jussi LehtonenFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven tunes, six of which are original compositions by Koivistoinen and one is a standard, which originates from an earlier recording session from 2012 that produced the debut album "Hati HatiFind albums with this title". The six new recordings were the last ones recorded at the legendary M1 Studio of the YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company) which witnessed numerous Jazz albums being recorded there during its existence.

The music, as expected, is a wonderful collection of sublimely melodic tunes, which Koivistoinen manages to weave times and time again with his usual natural heartfelt elegance. As a composer Koivistoinen is absolutely untouched by the tides of time and his compositions are as vigorous, full of joy, energy and harmony as they were through his entire career.

The quartet performs also every bit as expected, with Koivistoinen saxophone soaring over the background supplied by the rhythm section, in a typical barrage of notes which characterizes the Modern Jazz post-Coltrane school, which he always represented faithfully. Tuomarila displays his incredible fluency and technique, which spark the quartet´s overall sound significantly. Huhtala and Lehtonen solidly provide the rhythmic pulsations and since this album features more up-tempo numbers that the debut, they are heard much more prominently. Overall this quartet´s performances are the epitome of what modern mainstream Jazz is all about – great tunes perfectly executed by talented and highly professional musicians, who have to ability to state something personal and original rather than imitating the past.

For mainstream Jazz lovers this album is an instant classic, which should satisfy even the most experienced connoisseurs. Just grab a copy ASAP and enjoy – satisfaction guaranteed!

JUSSI LEHTONEN ~ MOVE ON
SVART 125 (Barcode: 6430065582786) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2016 Released: 2017

This is the third album by Finnish drummer / composer Jussi LehtonenFind albums by this artist, recorded in a quintet setting with saxophonist Joonatan RautioFind albums by this artist, guitarist Teemu ViinikainenFind albums by this artist, pianist Aki RissanenFind albums by this artist and bassist Jori HuhtalaFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine original compositions, all by Lehtonen.

The music is all straightforward modern mainstream Jazz, completely within the Jazz convention. The compositions are all well weaved and offer nice melody lines, but tender little intellectual challenge as such and create a déjà vu impression.

All the players are excellent performers, who can carry a tune and improvise elegantly, without a hitch. But altogether there is nothing here that any Jazz listener anywhere in the world has not heard before and the entire album lacks the ability to cross beyond the ordinary. Personally for me only the guitar work by Viinikainen offers somewhat more glimmer than the rest of the stuff presented here.

Having said all that, this is a perfectly composed and performed Jazz album, which should make many Jazz enthusiasts completely happy. It is simply a bit too much American and too little Finnish for my liking.

AKE ANDERSSON / ANTERO HONKANEN ~ REIDARIN SAHKOISET KUVAT
SVART 129 (Barcode: 6430065584483) ~ FINLAND ~ Electronic & Ambient

Recorded: 1975 - 1976 Released: 2018

This is a reissue of a wonderful and pretty obscure album, originally released on the legendary LoveFind albums on this label Records, by two Finnish electronic music pioneers Ake AnderssonFind albums by this artist and Antero HonkanenFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight original compositions, four each by the two team members and this is the first time this music appears on CD.

Andersson and Honkanen were both studio technicians at the YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company) and were in charge of producing a myriad of soundtracks used by the radio in its various programs. They decided to create an album of electronic music, based on the paintings by Reidar SarestoniemiFind albums by this artist. The music accompanied an exhibition of Sarestoniemi´s works, which was heard by Otto DonnerFind albums by this artist, the producer / co-owner of Love Records, who decided to release the music on an album.

In retrospect this music sounds every bit as innovative and fresh as it did at the time of its recordings. Using a mixture of synthesizers, electronic devices and acoustic instruments the team managed to create a wide spectrum of sound vistas, which although lack strict melodic themes, make an aesthetic emotional impact based on pure sound variations.

The fact that the music was released at the time speaks volumes about the role of Love Records in shaping the landscape of Finnish Culture and the openness of the label´s owners to all genres of music, as well as the sparkling diversity of the local music scene. Therefore this album is a superb document of the vitality of 1970s, which marked a rapid emancipation of the Finnish music from its earlier relative "provinciality". This is definitely a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.

Recorded: 1973 Released: 2018

This is a reissue of one of the rarest and most important Finnish Jazz / Electronic Music / Avant-Garde albums from the early 1970s. The album was recorded under the auspices of the YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company) Experimental Studio by a group of Finnish musicians led by trumpeter Jarmo SermilaFind albums by this artist, which also included flautist Mikael HelasvuoFind albums by this artist, bassist Teppo Hauta-AhoFind albums by this artist, drummer Edward VesalaFind albums by this artist and electronic music composer Antero HonkanenFind albums by this artist. Soprano singer Pirkkolisa TikkaFind albums by this artist guests on one track. The album presents eight original compositions, three composed by Honkanen, two each by Sermila and Vesala and one by Hauta-Aho. The album’s title originates from the poem by Marilyn MonroeFind albums by this artist “A Doll’s Cry”, which lyrics sung by Tikka appear on one of the tracks.

The music is a wonderful amalgam of contemporary Avant-Garde, Electronic Music and Jazz improvisation and remains completely original and unique today, almost half a Century later. The fact that such audacious music was recorded in Finland at the time is a testimony to the incredible musical Renaissance of Finnish music in the late 1960s / early 1970s, which produced an immense amount of fresh, inventive and challenging music at the time.

This long overdue reissue (kudos to SvartFind albums on this label Records) is a wonderful opportunity for this music to be discovered by young generations of music lovers, as well as an important document of the era. For lovers of experimental music this album is an absolute classic and should not be missed!

SAMMAL ~ SUULIEKKI
SVART 140 (Barcode: 6430065583905) ~ FINLAND ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2017 Released: 2018

This is the third album by Finnish Prog group SammalFind albums by this artist, which consists of vocalist Jan-Erik KiviniemiFind albums by this artist, guitarist Jura SalmiFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Juhani LaineFind albums by this artist, bassist Lasse IlanoFind albums by this artist and drummer Tuomas KarivaaraFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine original pieces, written by the group members and featuring lyrics in Finnish.

The music continues the concept of the two earlier albums, but this time offers more melodic and complex compositions. The sound and style are faithful retro reproductions of Prog / Hard Rock of late 1960s / early 1970s, rather than an attempt to innovate, which is probably fine with most Prog followers. Prog blossomed in Finland during that period in parallel to other Prog centers across Europe. Sammal, like several other contemporary Finnish Prog groups, decided to skip over the dreaded Neo-Prog wave, which proved to be mostly derivative, and decided to return to the source of the music, at the height of its magical powers. They also decided to use vocals in Finnish, rather than ridicule the vocal parts with broken English pronunciation and accent.

As a result of these conscious decisions and of course their talents and abilities, they offer a retro sound / style of the idiom, which is authentic and at the same appealing. The music is excellently structured within the idiom´s boundaries, offering great melodies, strong riffs and superb soloing. The instrumental execution is spotless, as are the vocals, and original Prog connoisseurs should be delighted to hear this music, which is able to bring on waves of nostalgia and excitement at the same time. The pieces on this album are every bit as strong and stimulating as those on some the best albums created in the past.

Overall this album is certainly the strongest offering by the group. For people who already have numerous Prog albums, but are not aware of Sammal, it is a high time to discover them. Wholeheartedly recommended!

OILING BOILING ~ TWO FACES
SVART 142 (Barcode: 6430065581222) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1977 Released: 2017

This is a reissue of the second album by Finnish Jazz drummer / composer / bandleader Matti OilingFind albums by this artist and his band Oiling BoilingFind albums by this artist, which on this album was a sextet and included also trumpeter Markku JohanssonFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Erik DannholmFind albums by this artist, guitarist Juha BjorninenFind albums by this artist, bassist Ilkka WillmanFind albums by this artist and keyboardist Tuomo TanskaFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight tracks, six of which are original compositions (three by Tanska, two by Johansson and one co-composed by Oiling and the recording engineer Harold BurgonFind albums by this artist) and two are Jazz standards.

The music, as the title suggests, presents a mixture of Jazz and Fusion tunes, each genre given one side of the original LP, with the band being completely capable of handling both on equal footing. Great playing and soloing and excellent original composition make it a highly enjoyable listening experience, which lost nothing of its strength over time.

Oiling was one of the pioneers of modern Finnish Jazz and Fusion and a role model for many Finnish drummers, in both Rock and Jazz circles. He wrote the first tutorial book about drumming in the Finnish language in 1969 (expanded in 1975). He was also a pioneer of mixing Jazz with Funk and Rhythm And Blues and his many albums with the Oiling Boiling band reflected these influences, never compromising on musical quality. He was also a sweet person and I was lucky to meet him several times and kept in touch with him until his untimely passing in 2009.

Overall this is a wonderful piece of Finnish Jazz / Fusion history, well worth being remembered and still a great piece of quality enjoyable music. Warmly recommended!

MALADY ~ TOINEN TOISTA
SVART 145 (Barcode: 6430065583417) ~ FINLAND ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2017 Released: 2018

This is the second album by Finnish Progressive Rock group MaladyFind albums by this artist, which consists of guitarist Tony BjorkmanFind albums by this artist, vocalist / guitarist Babak IssabeiglooFind albums by this artist, drummer Juuso JylhanlehtoFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Ville RohiolaFind albums by this artist and bassist Jonni TanskanenFind albums by this artist. Several guest musicians also take part in the recording. The album presents five original compositions, co-composed by the group members, with lyrics (in Finnish) by Jylhanlehto.

The music is a direct continuation of the glorious days of Finnish Prog from the late 1960s and 1970s, as if the clock stopped for almost five decades and started again in 2010s. The classic characteristics of the Finnish Symphonic Prog are all here; beautiful melodic themes, expanded instrumental passages, layers of Nordic sound vistas and a general ambience of mystery imagination. The sound and the structure of the compositions are kept exactly in the same manner like those of the original Prog period, which luckily saves the group from the dreaded Neo-Prog mannerisms, and creates a contemporary reflection of the Prog tradition.

The performances are all elegant and intelligent, preserving a coherent group sound and sparing the listener the redundant solo doodling, which is the curse of most Neo-Prog albums. The decision to credit the music to all the group members is also a reflection of the same motivation. Malady wants to put out a unique group sound and musical aesthetics, rather than a collection of individual statements.

In spite of the fact that Prog is an a priori limited idiom, Malady is a great example of the possibility to make innovative and intelligent music, which is timeless and beautiful, and a proud continuance of the tradition, both of Prog in general and the superb Finnish legacy of the idiom.

Malady is one of several Finnish Prog groups active today and they are all well worth checking out. But this album easily achieves the "instant classic" merit and every true Prog lover´s collection wouldn´t be complete without it!

KAIRON; IRSE! ~ UJUBASAJUBA
SVART 148 (Barcode: 6430050669225) ~ FINLAND ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2014 Released: 2017

This is a reissue of the second album by the Finnish Prog group Kairon; IRSE!Find albums by this artist, which was, same as their debut album, originally self-released and later reissued by SvartFind albums on this label Records, their current record label. The album presents six original pieces, all co-credited to the group members with lyrics by Melet and Luhta.

The group manages to create a completely unique "wall of sound" effect, which combines Heavy Rock / Psychedelia / Ambient influences and emerges as one of the most interesting discoveries of the 2010s Prog.

The music is based on melodic background, which only rarely comes to the surface of the music due to the intense racket the guitars produce, but sharp-eared listeners won´t miss. Strangely, the massive attack of sound is not aggressive and can be easily solved by turning the volume knob slightly counterclockwise, to reveal the diverse sound layers hiding behind it. The vocals are hardly audible and become a part of the overall sound, which work fine for me.

Overall this is obviously worth checking out, especially for the brave-hearted Prog followers, who are ready to try something new and unexpected. The group released two more albums after this one, so there is obviously a consistency and continuity here – well done!

The original album presented eight original songs, five composed by Rechardt and three by Pembroke, and all featuring lyrics written by Pembroke, who was a British expatriate and could naturally handle the lyrics in English flawlessly. This remastered and expanded edition adds a second CD, which includes an entire concert recorded for Swedish radio in November of 1974, before the band entered the studio to record the "Nuclear NightclubFind albums with this title" album. It presents seven songs, five of which will be recorded later for the album, and two which originated from Pembroke´s second solo album "PigwormFind albums with this title" recorded earlier in 1974. Kotilainen did not participate on this recording.

The music, although undoubtedly somewhat less strictly Prog oriented, is by all means absolutely brilliant, wonderfully combining the excellent songwriting with perfect performances, full of great instrumental parts. Wigwam were, as it often happened with the capricious Prog fanatics, accused for taking a more commercial path, but the band, which suffered from a dichotomy in its ranks since its inception, was now completely united behind their musical output and quite honestly read well the changing Prog landscape, which pulled many of the classic Prog bands towards a more song oriented direction.

The collected talents of Wigwam´s members still made it one of the best Prog band in Europe and even worldwide, and if not for the fact that they originated from Finland, they would have probably reached to top of the Prog peak. This album was released in the UK and a few other countries, bringing the band some success, but Prog at the time was approaching its global collapse, when the initial creativity of the genre simply dried out. Wigwam released two more excellent albums before calling it quits and future efforts to resurrect the band proved to be as futile as those of other Prog band around the globe. The magic was simply gone.

This excellently sounding and expanded edition is a must have for Finnish Prog / Wigwam fans all over the globe and SvartFind albums on this label Records, as usual, made a perfect job preparing this reissue. Brilliant stuff!

WIGWAM ~ LUCKY GOLDEN STRIPES AND STARPOISE (50TH ANNIVERSARY EXTENDED EDITION)
SVART 160 (Barcode: 6430065585206) ~ FINLAND ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1976 Released: 2018

This is a reissue of the seventh album by the iconic Finnish Prog band WigwamFind albums by this artist, which featured a new lineup of the group and marked a new period in the band´s career, often referred to as Wigwam Mk. II. Following the departure of keyboardist Jukka GustavsonFind albums by this artist and bassist Pekka PohjolaFind albums by this artist, the two remaining members: vocalist / pianist Jim PembrokeFind albums by this artist and drummer Ronnie OsterbergFind albums by this artist were joined by guitarist Pekka RechardtFind albums by this artist and bassist Mans GroundstroemFind albums by this artist. On this album the lineup was extended to a quintet with the addition of keyboardist Hessu HietanenFind albums by this artist. The original album, which was recorded in London, presented nine original songs, five composed by Rechardt and three by Pembroke, all featuring lyrics written by Pembroke, who was a British expatriate and could naturally handle the lyrics in English flawlessly, and finally one tune was an instrumental co-composed by all five members of the group. This remastered and expanded edition adds a second CD, which includes five alternate mixes and four live studio rehearsals of the tunes from the album, all previously unissued.

Hietanen was a fully integrated member of the band by the time this music was recorded and this changed the entire sound of the group. Although this album is often described as the most commercial of all the Wigwam albums, is not really that different from its predecessor or its successor, and the difference is mostly due to the different sound ambience rather than the music itself.

The collected talents of Wigwam´s members still made it one of the best Prog band in Europe and even worldwide, and if not for the fact that they originated from Finland, they would have probably reached to top of the Prog peak. ROCKRESSIO ~ ROCKRESSIO
SVART 169 (Barcode: 6430065585268) ~ FINLAND ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1972 Released: 2018

This is an archival release presenting the entire recorded legacy of the Finnish Rock / Prog group RockressioFind albums by this artist, which included vocalist Hans DalmanFind albums by this artist, guitarist Kalervo KaarreFind albums by this artist, bassist Tapio MattlarFind albums by this artist and drummer Matti EverhallFind albums by this artist. It includes eight original pieces, all composed by Mattlar or co-composed by him and Kaarre with lyrics in English. Four of these pieces were released on an EP, three are YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company) recordings and one is an instrumental outtake of one of the EP tracks.

The music is a delightful nostalgic reminder of good times when Hard Rock / Prog and other ambitious attempts of the kind ruled the earth. The English lyrics are a bit out of place but they can be forgiven considering the fact that singing in English was almost universal for young Finnish Rock groups at the time.

Rockressio were basically a power trio plus vocalist, which was the most common Rock lineup at the time. All three instrumentalists were surprisingly gifted and their soaring riffs / guitar soloing / pulsating bass and excellent drumming are all worth being remembered.

Sadly the group disappeared almost immediately after recording the EP and kudos are due to SvartFind albums on this label Records for bringing this music back to circulation. For Heavy early Prog a la Black SabbathFind albums by this artist debut, this is an absolute must!

This is an archival album collecting all the recordings by Finnish keyboardist / composer Olli AhvenlahtiFind albums by this artist recorded with the superb UMOFind albums by this artist Jazz Orchestra for the YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company). The album presents fifteen tracks, including the five-part "Seawinds" suite, which gave the album its title. All the music was composed and arranged by Ahvenlahti.

UMO, founded in 1975, turned out to be Finland´s most renowned Jazz Big Band / Orchestra, active to this very day. Over the years its ranks included the absolute who’s who of the Finnish Jazz scene, as well as numerous international guests, and produced a remarkable recording legacy.

On these recordings the UMO was in its early days, but already offered a remarkable level of professionalism and talent, as well as a typical European approach to the Big Band Jazz sound and style. It included such formidable players as saxophonists Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist, Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist, Juhani AaltonenFind albums by this artist, Pentti LahtiFind albums by this artist and Paroni PaakkunainenFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Kaj BacklundFind albums by this artist, trombonist Mircea StanFind albums by this artist, pianist Heikki SarmantoFind albums by this artist, bassists Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist and Pekka PohjolaFind albums by this artist, drummer Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist and many others. Ahvenlahti played keyboards and the orchestra was conducted by Esko LinnavalliFind albums by this artist. Three of the tracks feature the wonderful vocalist Irina MilanFind albums by this artist, singing music composed to Finnish poetry.

The music is beautifully melodic and at the same time complex enough to keep the listener on his toes. The superb Big Band arrangements and wonderful soloing turns this album into an excellent listening experience, which is fresh and full of youthful energy with a slight Fusion tinge. All the sections of the Big Band are perfectly utilized to create a big sound, but the listener is able to hear each individual; instrument. The excellent rhythm section drives the music forward with zest and elegance.

Overall this is a great Big Band Jazz album that lost nothing of its power and freshness over time and sounds every bit as exciting as it did at the time of the recording. For European Big Band Jazz fans this is a true feast and for the many UMO followers around the world this is an absolute must have. Wholeheartedly recommended!

SAMMAL ~ SAMMAL
SVART 179 (Barcode: 6430028553792) ~ FINLAND ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2011 Released: 2013

This is the debut album by Finnish Prog group SammalFind albums by this artist, which consists of vocalist Jan-Erik KiviniemiFind albums by this artist, guitarist Jura SalmiFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Juhani LaineFind albums by this artist, bassist Lasse IlanoFind albums by this artist and drummer Tuomas KarivaaraFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine original pieces, written by the group members and featuring lyrics in Finnish.

The music is a direct continuation of the Prog / Hard Rock idiom that crystallized in the late 1960s / early 1970s during the original Prog wave, which blossomed in Finland in parallel to other Prog centers across Europe.

I had a great time while listening to this album and the fact that they also managed to record (so far) two additional albums is very encouraging and promising. For people who already have numerous Prog albums, but are not aware of Sammal, it is a high time to discover them. Wholeheartedly recommended!

EMMA SALOKOSKI & ILMILIEKKI QUARTET ~ LIGGER DU FORTFARANDE I SANGEN!
SVART 179 (Barcode: 6430065585916) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz & Poetry

Recorded: 2018 Released: 2018

This is an album by celebrated Finnish Jazz vocalist / composer Emma SalokoskiFind albums by this artist recorded with the Ilmiliekki QuartetFind albums by this artist, which comprises of trumpeter Verneri PohjolaFind albums by this artist, pianist Tuomo PrattalaFind albums by this artist, bassist Antti LotjonenFind albums by this artist and drummer Olavi LouhivouriFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine original songs, three by Salokoski, two each by Prattala, Pohjola and Louhivouri. The lyrics of the songs are poems by Finnish (and in two cases Swedish) poets, which of course makes this a Jazz & Poetry project, one of my favorite genres. The booklet includes all the poems in Finnish, Swedish and English languages.

The Jazz & Poetry idiom has been strongly present on the Finnish Jazz scene since the 1960s and some of its manifestations proved to be amongst the finest Finnish Jazz albums over the years, drawing a parallel between Finnish and Polish Jazz, which also seems to be enamored with that specific Art Form.

The music, although beautifully lyrical, as appropriate for this environment, is quite complex and convoluted, which of course means that it requires a lot of attention from the listener and refuses to be banal at any point. The quartet plays modern European Jazz, with a lot of intrinsic freedom and space, keeping the listener on the edge at all times. All the compositions are excellent and all serve the texts perfectly, which of course is the essence of Jazz & Poetry projects.

The personal contributions by all the participants are, as expected, absolutely perfect. Salokoski is a superb interpreter of the texts and offers a crystal clear tone and fascinating approach to melody. Pohjola, who within a space of a few years managed to climb right on the pedestal of Finnish Jazz, demonstrating brilliant technique and wonderful feel for the intricacies of the Jazz universe, which I had the pleasure to watch closely personally, is at his usual superb form here, and although he is mostly an accompanist rather than the main voice, stands up to the challenge with flying colors and his contributions are an essential part of the project. Prattala and the rhythm section are perfect in their respective roles supplying the harmonic and rhythmic foundations with elegance and flair.

Overall this is a wonderful album, full of delicate music and aesthetic pleasures, challenging but highly rewarding intellectually, in short a unique gift of music that should be cherished. Well done everybody!

KAIRON; IRSE! ~ POLYSOMN
SVART 204 (Barcode: 6430077091016) ~ FINLAND ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2019 Released: 2020

This is the fourth album by the Finnish Prog group Kairon; IRSE!Find albums by this artist. The album presents nine original pieces, all co-credited to the group members with lyrics by the group members and Jena HaapaharjuFind albums by this artist.

The music continues the path set by the previous albums, heavily laced with Psychedelia and with traces of Heavy Rock and Ambient and some Jazz oriented improvisations.

This album marks further change in the group´s sound, which is again mellowed, the Heavy elements appearing only occasionally and the vocals become audible, although still purposely distorted. The melodic content also becomes much clearer and more elaborate.

Overall this is obviously worth checking out, especially for the brave-hearted Prog followers, who are ready to try something new and unexpected.– again well done!

ALVARADO / KOIVISTOINEN / TUOMARILA ~ ALMA
SVART 208 (Barcode: 6430065588023) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2018 - 2019 Released: 2019

This is a wonderful album by a trio which puts together Argentinean Tango vocalist Martin AlvaradoFind albums by this artist and two Finnish Jazz Masters: saxophonist / composer Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist and pianist / composer Alexi TuomarilaFind albums by this artist. The album presents eleven songs, five composed by Koivistoinen and two by Tuomarila, all with lyrics by Alvarado, one by Alvarado and three come from other sources.

The music is a very authentic Jazz-World Fusion adventure, combining the Tango characteristics with Jazzy accompaniment, not trying to sound overtly related to any of the genres but rather creating a new amalgam. The original compositions by both the Finns manage successfully to create a Tango subtext, but also venture into other idioms, like Blues and Latin music.

The intimate setting creates a special ambience, where the vocals and the saxophone / piano accompaniment compliment each other very tightly, presenting plenty of opportunities for solo parts by both instruments, both executed perfectly. Koivistoinen, despite his age, sounds vital and creative, as if untouched by the tides of time, which hopefully will continue for many years to come.

Overall this is a very unique and beautiful project, splendidly executed and reverberating the idea of cross-genre pollination. Argentinean Tango was always spiritually close to Jazz, as already demonstrated by the pioneering work of Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist, and the many fans of this kind of musical bridge will find this album certainly worthy of their attention.

The album present thirteen songs, twelve of which feature brilliant lyrics by Royhka and one is a poem by French poet Arthur RimbaudFind albums by this artist. The album offers a collection of great Rock songs with highly intelligent socially / politically oriented contents, which are performed without much instrumental complexity, but kick ass from start to finish. The songs offers a consistent musical continuity and a unique atmosphere, almost, but not quite. “heavy” and simply delightful. Royhka’s vocals are heartfelt and sensitive and the album has a distinct “retro” feel and sound.

Overall this is splendid Rock album, which sounds and feels like albums from the good old days when people were making music for music’s sake. With Finnish lyrics, the verbal layer is of course limited to those who speak the language, but honestly this does not hinder the essence of what the album has to offer. I had a blast listening to this music!

SPERM ~ 50TH ERECTION: COLLECTED WORKS 1967-1971
SVART 235 (Barcode: 6430065583820) ~ FINLAND ~ Avant-Garde Electronic

Recorded: 1967 - 1971 Released: 2018

This Box Set collects all the recordings by the pioneering Finnish Avant-Garde ensemble SpermFind albums by this artist led by guitarist / Electronic Music innovator Pekka AiraksinenFind albums by this artist. It includes the ensemble´s only album "Shh!Find albums with this title" and their early EP "3rd ErectionFind albums with this title" as well as the album "One Point MusicFind albums with this title" released under Airaksinen´s name, and additionally a plethora of previously unreleased recordings form the same period, more than doubling the playing time, spread over two CDs. In addition to the CDs the Box Set also includes a wonderfully researched book (bilingual) with historic background and detailed story of the ensemble.

Sperm were obviously heroes of the Finnish / European Underground / Avant-Garde movement, way beyond just their approach to music. The music was in fact just one of the elements of expression, which symbolized social, political and artistic revolution, often extremely different from the mainstream Culture. As such, Sperm, in their radicalism, opened the minds of young Fins at the time to question authority and cultural norms.

The music mixes early electronic / ambient experiments, Free Jazz and Improvised Music and in retrospect remains as radical as it was at the time it was created and lost nothing of its originality or power of expression. Actually such "audacity" and disregard of the norms is probably unthinkable today, as we have grown to become a race of intellectual chickens.

This Box Set is an enormously important document of the era, not only in Finland but in Europe as a whole. Similar radical experiments were happening all over Europe, even including the Socialist countries, and they were a reflection of the European unrest that swept the continent in the late 1960s.

Although not for the weak hearted, the music included in this Box Set and its significance is definitely something I wish everybody could experience in their lifetime, better late than never!

TASAVALLAN PRESIDENTTI ~ LAMBERTLAND
SVART 250 (Barcode: 6430065588511) ~ FINLAND ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1972 Released: 2019

This is a reissue of the third album by the seminal Finnish Jazz-Rock Fusion / Progressive Rock group Tasavallan PresidenttiFind albums by this artist (Eng. President of the Republic). This album was recorded in Finland and Sweden (vocals only) and originally released internationally on SonetFind albums on this label Records and locally on LoveFind albums on this label Records.

The group was founded in 1969 by two ex-members of the group Blues SectionFind albums by this artist: bassist / keyboardist Mans GroundstroemFind albums by this artist and British vocalist Frank RobsonFind albums by this artist and two members of HelpFind albums by this artist (led by vocalist Eero RaittinenFind albums by this artist): drummer Vesa AaltonenFind albums by this artist and guitarist Jukka TolonenFind albums by this artist and finally a seasoned saxophonist / flautist Juhani AaltonenFind albums by this artist, Vesa´s brother, who was a member of SoulsetFind albums by this artist. The group recorded their debut album the same year, which was one of the earliest releases on the absolutely legendary Finnish Love Records (catalog number LRLP 7), the home of the dazzling Finish music of the late 1960s and 1970s, which released an astonishing catalog of almost 400 LPs.

By the time this album was recorded Juhani Aaltonen left to be replaced by another superb saxophone / flute player Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist and so did Frank Robson, who was replaced by Eero Raittinen (see above). Tolonen, who started to develop a successful solo career and released his debut album "Tolonen!Find albums with this title" in 1971 (also on Sonet), became the group´s resident composer and wrote almost all the music on this album, except for one piece, which was composed by Poyry. The album presented six extended tracks, two of which were instrumentals. The lyrics were written by bassist Mats HuldenFind albums by this artist, founding member of WigwamFind albums by this artist, "the other" seminal Finnish Prog supergroup at the time. This expanded edition adds the two sides of the band´s single as bonus tracks.

The music is classic Progressive Rock of the period, with complex compositions often combining several themes into a single musical piece. The vocal parts are relatively limited and most of the music is devoted to instrumental improvisations, with a strong Jazzy influence, which continues the Jazz-Rock element of the earlier albums. Tolonen and Poyry offer plenty of bloodcurdling soloing, which remains completely relevant to this very day. In retrospect this album stands out as one of the finest achievements of the European Prog in early 1970s, before the genre lost most of its steam and originality in the years that followed.

For lovers of early European Jazz-Rock Fusion and Progressive Rock this is an absolute gem and a must in any serious music collection of that period. Thanks to the great Finnish SvartFind albums on this label Records for their fantastic job of keeping the Finnish musical legacy alive.

BROTZMANN / AALTONEN / KOWALD / VESALA ~ HOT LOTTA
SVART 253 (Barcode: 6430065584575) ~ FINLAND ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

Recorded: 1973 Released: 2018

This is a reissue of the iconic album by the German / Finnish Free Jazz quartet, a one time cooperation formed as a result of a Finnish tour organized by the Goethe Institut for the two German musicians: saxophonist Peter BrotzmannFind albums by this artist and bassist Peter KowaldFind albums by this artist, joined by Finnish Free Jazz pioneers: saxophonist / flautist Juhani AaltonenFind albums by this artist and drummer Edward VesalaFind albums by this artist. The original album, which offered just four tracks, is remastered and expanded by a sensational and previously unavailable live radio session, adding five tracks and almost doubling the original album´s playing time. All the music is of course original, and although credited to individual quartet members, it is mostly spontaneously created by the players.

At the time of the recording the German musicians were already Free Jazz "veterans", with the German Avant-Garde already flourishing for a few good years, and Brotzmann gaining already a legendary status with his brazing innovations and complete disregard of conventions. Aaltonen and Vesala started to play Free Jazz just about a couple years earlier, recording the first Finnish Free Jazz album "NanaFind albums with this title". When the tour and the recording of this album happened, Vesala already recorded the "TriptyconFind albums with this title" album with Jan GarbarekFind albums by this artist for the ECMFind albums on this label label and a year later would record "Nan MadolFind albums with this title", his first ECM release.

The music is, as expected, absolutely stunning and completely fresh, sounding better than most Free Jazz played five decades later, which is not able to reproduce the spontaneity, group improvisation and telepathic communication between the musicians. Aaltonen´s flute parts are especially interesting, as flute is relatively rarely used in Improvised Music, surely at the time. The unusual double saxophone lineup is also a factor in making this album so outstanding.

Overall this is a quintessential piece of European Avant-Garde / Free Jazz history, which is sadly little known due to the obscurity of this album, which reaches astronomical prices on the vinyl market these days. Therefore this reissue is an absolute marvel and again kudos is due to the SvartFind albums on this label label for their amazing work in keeping the Cultural legacy alive.

Obviously this is an absolute must to all European Free Jazz connoisseurs anywhere on this planet. Essential listening!

TUSMORKE ~ RISET BAK SPEILET
SVART 270 (Barcode: 6430050661762) ~ NORWAY ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2014 Released: 2014

This is the second album by Norwegian Prog group TusmorkeFind albums by this artist, which consists of twin brothers: vocalist / bassist Benedikt MomrakFind albums by this artist and vocalist / flautist Kristoffer MomrakFind albums by this artist (both playing a plethora of other instruments between them), keyboardist Lars Fredrik FroislieFind albums by this artist and drummer Martin Nordrum KneppenFind albums by this artist. Five guest musicians contribute on selected tracks. The album presents eight original songs (the LP version of the album includes only five songs and the additional three appear only on the CD version as bonuses), all written by the Momrak brothers.

From the very first moment the music starts playing it is pretty obvious that the band decided to go back to the glorious tradition of the original Progressive Rock from the late 1960s / early 1970s, and skip the tedious Neo-Prog idiom completely. Musically Tusmorke (at least on this album) is heavily influenced by Jethro TullFind albums by this artist, but combines in their music many other motifs, including Nordic Folklore, Medieval Music, and some Heavy / Dark Rock, creating a wonderful amalgam that can justly be called Prog, despite the fact that the idiom has been gone for almost five decades.

The music is pretty complex and offers extended pieces lasting close to ten minutes in duration and in one case even fifteen minutes, which allows the creation of atmospheric buildup and structural dynamics.

The music is deeply soaked in the keyboards sound (as the band does not feature a lead guitar), but those sound (or are) authentic like the keyboards of the original period, rather than the synthesizer imitating the past, which adds considerably to the authenticity and overall atmosphere of the music. The vocals, which in most cases are sung unisono, are not necessarily in the focus of the music and are skillfully integrated in the overall aural experience.

The sound quality of the album is rather murky, which adds to the retro effect, but the music suffers to some extent, but charmingly so. Hopefully this music will never fall into Steven WilsonFind albums by this artist’s claws.

Overall it is quite obvious that Tusmorke is one of the few true Prog bands active today and their albums belong to the finest achievements of the idiom in 2010s. This is an absolute must for all Prog lovers, as are all other albums released by the band so far. Brilliant stuff!

IRO HAARLA ELECTRIC ENSEMBLE ~ WHAT WILL WE LEAVE BEHIND
SVART 274 (Barcode: 6430077094833) ~ FINLAND ~ Avant-Garde Rock

Recorded: 2019 Released: 2021

This is an album by Finnish keyboardist / harpist / composer Iro HaarlaFind albums by this artist, ex-wife of iconic Finnish drummer / composer Edward VesalaFind albums by this artist, recorded with her ensemble called Electric EnsembleFind albums by this artist, which also includes her current husband, bassist / keyboardist Ulf KrokforsFind albums by this artist, guitarist Jukka OrmaFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Sami SippolaFind albums by this artist and her child with Edward Vesala, drummer Aniida VesalaFind albums by this artist. The album presents twelve tracks, eight composed by Haarla, two co-composed with Krokfors and Aniida Vesala, one co-composed with Krokfors and one composed by Aniida Vesala.

The music is an amalgam of Ambient synthesizer soaked atmospheric sounds and electronic music, Psychedelia, Jazz and Rock, which shuns any attempt to be categorized. It will probably mean / sound differently to different listeners, and could be considered as contemporary Progressive Rock with strong Improvised Music influences. It also has the quality of a soundtrack to an imaginary movie.

There are obvious melodic parts, which appear in some of the compositions, and more Ambient approach in others, presenting a fascinating musical trip, which keeps the listener on his toes for the entire duration of the album. The guitar parts are obviously Rock oriented, as is the strong drumming, but this is only one of several facets of the music, which keeps constantly changing.

Overall, this is a highly original piece of music, created by veteran and young musicians playing alongside each other, which is interesting and unexpected and offers music which can be accessible to a wide audience. Listeners looking for innovation and surprise won’t be disappointed and the album is definitely quite an experience.

TASAVALLAN PRESIDENTTI ~ TASAVALLAN PRESIDENTTI (II)
SVART 298 (Barcode: 6430065588535) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Blues Fusion

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2019

This is a reissue of the second album by the seminal Finnish Jazz-Rock Fusion / Progressive Rock group Tasavallan PresidenttiFind albums by this artist (Eng. President of the Republic). This album, same as the debut, was also eponymous and therefore its title is often supplemented with (II) to distinguish between the two. This album was recorded in Sweden and originally released on Swedish EMIFind albums on this label in hope of exposing the group to a wider European audience.

The group recorded their debut album the same year, which was one of the earliest releases on the absolutely legendary Finnish LoveFind albums on this label Records (catalog number LRLP 7), the home of the dazzling Finish music of the late 1960s and 1970s, which released an astonishing catalog of almost 400 LPs.

By the time this album was recorded Juhani Aaltonen left to be replaced by another superb saxophone / flute player Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine original tunes, eight of which feature lyrics (in English) by Robson. The music was composed by Groundstroem, Tolonen and Robson or co-composed by all members of the group.

The music is absolutely stunning and every bit as good as the best efforts produced at the time in the UK. With a big heavy sound, obvious Blues influence and featuring wicked flute solos it resembles the early albums by Jethro TullFind albums by this artist and many other proto Jazz-Rock Fusion and Progressive bands of the era. Robson´s expressive vocals and English accent make this music sound as if produced by a British group, which enabled Tasavallan Presidentti to tour the UK several times, where I heard and met them for the first time.

The unique combination of extraordinary instrumental abilities and sublime songwriting, which was about to explode on their next album "LambertlandFind albums with this title" made Tasavallan Presidentti one of the unforgettable and iconic bands in Finnish music history, which in its entirety remains one of the greatest hidden treasures of the European music scene.

For lovers of early European Jazz-Rock Fusion and Progressive Rock this is an absolute gem and a must in any serious music collection of that period. Thanks to the great Finnish SvartFind albums on this label Records for their fantastic job of keeping the Finnish musical legacy alive.

EERO KOIVISTOINEN ~ THE ORIGINAL SIN
SVART 307 (Barcode: 6430077093621) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1971 Released: 2021

"The Original SinFind albums with this title", recorded on August 13, 16 & 23, 1971, was the fourth album released by Finnish saxophonist / composer / arranger Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist. Aged 25 at the time, Koivistoinen was already recognized at the time as a central figure on the burgeoning Finnish Jazz scene.

During his student days at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, one of the first European educational institutions to recognize Jazz as a valid musical Art Form worthy of academic studies, Koivistoinen frequented the Finland´s Capital Jazz club scene, performing at jam sessions. By 1967 he already had his first trio with bassist Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist (brother of pianist / composer Heikki SarmantoFind albums by this artist) and the legendary drummer Edward VesalaFind albums by this artist, who is often considered as the Godfather of modern Finnish Jazz. The trio played adventurous free-improvised Jazz, being the pioneers of Free Jazz in their country. Sadly, the trio never recorded an album and the only recorded evidence of their performances can be found on a live EP recorded at the Espoo Jazz Festival in 1967.

In 1967 the newly founded Finnish Jazz Federation (FJF), probably the best professional Jazz organization in Europe at the time, selected Koivistoinen as the first recipient of the annual Georgie Award in recognition for his outstanding talents. Two years later Koivistoinen performed for the first time outside of his country´s borders at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland (his performance at Montreux as a member of the International Festival Big Band was recorded and released on PolydorFind albums on this label), winning the festival´s competition for bands, which in turn led to his appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival in the US, exposing his talents on the global scale.

In the early 1970s Koivistoinen continued his studies in Jazz composition at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where numerous of his compatriot Jazz musicians also studied over the years, starting with Heikki Sarmanto, who upon his return home brought over the American guitarist Lance GundersonFind albums by this artist who plays on this album. During the 1970s Koivistoinen recorded a stream of exceptional albums, which featured his compositional and arranging skills as well as his brilliant saxophone playing. Constantly re-inventing himself, his music kept changing during this decade and touched upon various Jazz genres, including his pioneering contribution to Jazz-Rock Fusion, but always remaining his very own.

Starting with "ValtakuntaFind albums with this title" (1968) and continuing with "OdysseusFind albums with this title" (1969), "For ChildrenFind albums with this title" (1970), "The Original Sin" (1971), "Muusa Ja RuusaFind albums with this title" (1971), "Wahoo!Find albums with this title" (1972), "3rd VersionFind albums with this title" (1973), "The Front Is BreakingFind albums with this title" (1976), "LabyrinthFind albums with this title" (1977) and finally "Live At The Belmont Jazz ClubFind albums with this title" (1977) Koivistoinen produced a body of work of amazing depth, beauty, sophistication and intellectual significance, which remains as a wonderful illustration of the Finnish and European Jazz heritage during that decade.

However, by the end of the 1970s, the immense popularity, which European Jazz managed to kindle, was gradually losing its steam. Record labels, owned by international mogul corporations, lost interest in any kind of adventurous music, Jazz included, and the number of Jazz releases went down considerably, a situation which affected Finland as well. Undeterred by this turn of events Koivistoinen decided to take matters into his own hands and established in 1983 one of the first musician-owned independent record labels, PROFind albums on this label Records, which enabled him to realize his musical projects.

This album is a deeply significant milestone in Koivistoinen´s musical development, since it presents for the first time the true depth of his compositions as well as his overall musical approach. It is also his first work with a large-scale ensemble, which enables him to utilize his arranging skills to a full extent.

The six compositions present here were recorded by three different lineups; a tentet ("Sinner", "Both & And" and "Rock & Roll"), a septet ("The Original Sin") and a sextet (the remaining two). The tentet comprised of: Eero Koivistoinen – tenor, alto & soprano saxophones, Tapani LuuppolaFind albums by this artist – trumpet, Jussi AaltoFind albums by this artist or Erkki LipponenFind albums by this artist – trombone, Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist – tenor & alto saxophone, Pentti LahtiFind albums by this artist – baritone saxophone, Eero OjanenFind albums by this artist – piano, Lance Gunderson – guitar, Pekka Sarmanto – bass and Reino LaineFind albums by this artist & Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist – drums. The sextet comprised of: Koivistoinen, Ojanen, Gunderson, Sarmanto, Laine and Rosnell and the septet added Unto Haapa-ahoFind albums by this artist on bass clarinet.

Both the music and the performances are absolutely breathtaking, although the album focuses on ensemble playing rather than on extensive soloing, but of course there are still plenty of most impressive solos. An atmosphere of serenity, contemplation and wide-open spaces, typical in Finnish music, prevails even in the up-tempo passages, which turns listening to this album into a most satisfying love affair with music. The fact that it is now almost 50 years old is completely meaningless in this context, where true classics only get better with time.

Thanks to SvartFind albums on this label Records for making this musical treasure available again. Listeners interested in Finnish Jazz legacy are recommended to check out also the other Svart Records reissues documenting this burgeoning period.
Side Note
The above are my liner notes included on this album's artwork.

I am honored when asked by the Artists to write liner notes for their albums, always hoping that my words reflect the true spirit of the music. This is also a symbol of our mutual respect and friendship developed over the years.

The same is also true when Record Labels ask me to write liner notes for their releases, mostly in the case of reissues of archival albums, which is a symbol of their appreciation of my knowledge and historical perspective and my recognition of their dedication to the preservation of the history of recorded music and the effort to keep human Culture and Aesthetics alive.

SONNY SIMMONS / MOKSHA SAMNYASIN ~ NOMADIC
SVART 331 (Barcode: 6430050662684) ~ USA ~ Avant-Garde Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2012 Released: 2014

This is a studio album by legendary American saxophonist / English horn player / composer Sonny SimmonsFind albums by this artist (born 1933) recorded with the French trio Moksha SamnyasinFind albums by this artist (bassist Thomas BellierFind albums by this artist, drummer Sebastian BismuthFind albums by this artist and sitar player Michel KristofFind albums by this artist). The album presents four original compositions, all co-credited to the four participating musicians.

Simmons, who is recognized as one of the earliest American Jazz Avant-Gardists, has a convoluted and fascinating biography. Following some pioneering Free Jazz recordings in the 1960s, he disappeared from the scene to return some three decades later and since the 1990s recorded a steady stream of albums, despite his advanced age.

The music on this album, although primarily improvised, is more ambient / psychedelic / atmospheric than Free Jazz oriented. Some World Music influences are also audible and the presence of sitar brings on obvious Indian Music associations. Simmons improvises most of the time over a drone-like background played by the trio, and the music develops slowly without much dynamics.

Overall this is a contemplative listening experience, which offers relatively well behaved improvisations over a steady, hypnotic rhythmic background, which could easily serve as background for meditation or a relaxed listening session.

EERO KOIVISTOINEN ~ DIVERSITY
SVART 336 (Barcode: 6430050661618) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2021 Released: 2022

This is the third album by Finnish saxophonist / composer / bandleader Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist recorded with his current quartet, which offers a steady lineup for the last decade and includes the outstanding pianist Alexi TuomarilaFind albums by this artist, bassist Jori HuhtalaFind albums by this artist and drummer Jussi LehtonenFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight original compositions, all by the leader.

The music offers a wide range of contemporary modern Jazz, mostly within the mainstream idiom, but brilliantly showcasing the diversity (as the title suggests) of the genre. The elaborately melodic base, which characterizes Koivistoinen’s career now entering its seventh decade, is always beautifully crafted and offers an ideal vehicle for the quartet members to improvise and express their inventiveness and virtuosity.

Completely in disregard of his age, Koivistoinen still displays strong, vigorous saxophone parts, which easily match the energy and vitality of the younger members of the quartet. Tuomarila is by now an established musical figure on the international scene and his piano playing sparkles with elegance and sophistication. The rhythm section is superbly synchronized with the two soloists and for the entire duration offers a perfect support, as well as impressive solo inserts.

Koivistoinen, who is one of the founding Fathers of Finnish Jazz, manages to stay prolifically active, relevant and still mostly unmatched on the local scene, which of course is an absolutely remarkable phenomenon in every respect. His recorded legacy to date is a wonderful example of the best in European Jazz, which although strongly rooted in American Jazz tradition, successfully integrates European ingredients, creating a perfect hybrid.

Overall, this is another masterpiece in the extensive collective work by Koivistoinen as composer, player and bandleader, which is a living proof of the ingenuity of our generation, proudly serving as an example to the future music makers. Thank you for this wonderful music, my Friend!

EERO KOIVISTOINEN ~ HATI HATI
SVART 352 (Barcode: 6430050663032) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2012 Released: 2014

This is the debut album by a quartet led by Finnish Jazz Giant, saxophonist / composer Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist with three representatives of the younger generation of the Finnish Jazz scene: pianist Alexi TuomarilaFind albums by this artist, bassist Jori HuhtalaFind albums by this artist and drummer Jussi LehtonenFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight tunes, seven of which are original compositions by Koivistoinen and one is an arrangement of a Bob DylanFind albums by this artist song.

During a career that lasts for over five decades Koivistoinen amassed an incredible legacy of music. As one of the founding Fathers of Finnish Jazz he continuously performed, recorded, led ensembles, and toured both locally and internationally, in short was and still is "Mr. Jazz" in the best and most accurate meaning of the term. He always combined the two most vital qualities essential for a great Jazz musician: a superb and very personal technique and a very personal, instantly recognizable compositional skill. Consistently and marvelously Koivistoinen established his position as one of the leading world-class post-Coltrane saxophonists over the years, and his playing lost absolutely nothing of its fluency, vitality and most importantly that incredible "coolness" which makes him stand apart from most other players.

This album is a superb example of melodic Modern Jazz, which flows gently from one tune to the next completely naturally and coherently. Koivistoinen´s compositions are all absolute gems, each and every one of them immediately deserving a status of a standard. Since the very early days he always managed to amaze me time after time with the gorgeousness of his tunes and the ones present here are no exception. Of course great tunes are basis of everything in Jazz, which this album demonstrates repeatedly.

The saxophone performances are also stunning and stellar, with a wonderful natural flow and lucidity. Even when the improvisations become complex and dense, they sound absolutely melodic and crystal clear. Careful listening reveals the entire Jazz tradition, which Koivistoinen´s playing is based on, and yet he remains completely original and always full of imagination. It is not surprising that for me Koivistoinen is one of the absolute top active world saxophone players and hopefully this will continue to be the case in years to come. The fact that Koivistoinen is first and foremost Finnish and European, which forged his musical personality and allowed it not to be overwhelmed by the American Jazz tradition, creating a wonderful amalgam of European elegance and taste with the original American spirit of the idiom.

Over the years Finland continuously produces wave after wave of extremely talented and creative musicians, including those active on the Jazz scene. Therefore it is not surprising that the younger players on this album are all masters of their trade. Tuomarila, who is naturally given a greater exposure, is an absolutely wonderful pianist, with exceptional sense of melody and fluidity, which turns his solos into micro masterpieces. Huhtala supports the music solidly and with a great sense of harmony. Lehtonen takes a very conservative approach trying to be as much respectfully unobtrusive as possible, which in case of this rather soft and delicate music is the best approach.

Overall this is a stunningly beautiful album, full of exquisite music and stellar performances, as always in the case of anything Koivistoinen is involved with. His many fans will find this album a worthy continuation of his splendid legacy and those who are not familiar with the Master, will perhaps be caught in the net of his magic notes. Thank you Eero for making this great music, which is able to make us smile again!

SAMMAL ~ MYRSKYVAROITUS
SVART 370 (Barcode: 6430050663452) ~ FINLAND ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2014 Released: 2015

This is the second album by Finnish Prog group SammalFind albums by this artist, which consists of vocalist Jan-Erik KiviniemiFind albums by this artist, guitarist Jura SalmiFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Juhani LaineFind albums by this artist, bassist Lasse IlanoFind albums by this artist and drummer Tuomas KarivaaraFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine original pieces, written by the group members and featuring lyrics in Finnish.

The music takes off exactly where the debut ended and follows the quest of direct continuation of the Prog / Hard Rock idiom that crystallized in the late 1960s / early 1970s during the original early Prog / Hard Rock wave (Deep PurpleFind albums by this artist, Uriah HeepFind albums by this artist and of course many others), which blossomed in Finland in parallel to other Prog centers across Europe. Sammal, like several other contemporary Finnish Prog groups, decided to skip over the dreaded Neo-Prog wave, which proved to be mostly derivative, and decided to return to the source of the music, at the height of its magical powers. They also decided to use vocals in Finnish (or in one case in Swedish, which is the second formal language in Finland), rather than ridicule the vocal parts with broken English pronunciation and accent.

This album was followed by the third album "SuuliekkiFind albums with this title", which affirms the group´s success to bring Prog back to its former glory. For people who already have numerous Prog albums, but are not aware of Sammal, it is a high time to discover them. Wholeheartedly recommended!

SVART 373 (Barcode: 6430077093812) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1967 - 1968 Released: 2021

This is a sensational reissue of the one of the modern Finnish Jazz most obscure and sought after recordings, a series of four EPs released originally in 1967/68 by the Jazz Society formed by the students of the Helsinki Polytechnic (now Helsinki University of Technology), who were avid Jazz fans and some of the students were also Jazz musicians.

The album presents all the nineteen tracks, that appeared collectively on these EPs, recorded by different lineups, which featured the absolute crème de la crème of the young generation of Finnish modern Jazz players.

EP 1 presents the earliest recording by saxophonist Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist, which also includes bassist Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist and drummer Edward VesalaFind albums by this artist with a percussionist on one track and a couple of cellist on another. They perform three original compositions by Koivistoinen and the music is an example of early Finnish Free Jazz. It precedes the recording of Koivistoinen’s debut album “ValtakuntaFind albums with this title”.

EP 2 presents two original compositions by pianist Pentti HietanenFind albums by this artist, recorded by a septet, which also included trumpeter Kaj BacklundFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Ilkka KrumoFind albums by this artist, Stanley LindroosFind albums by this artist and Paroni PaakkunainenFind albums by this artist, bassist Teppo Hauta-AhoFind albums by this artist and drummer Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist. Both are wonderful example of modern European Jazz with some Free oriented soloing by the participants and superb ensemble work by the septet.

EP 3 presents three tracks, one by saxophonist Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist and two by Koivistoinen. The first is performed by Poyry with pianist Eero OjanenFind albums by this artist, Hauta-Aho and Rosnell. The second is performed by a trio with Koivistoinen, Sarmanto and drummer Reino LaineFind albums by this artist. The third is performed by a quintet with Koivistoinen, Poyry, Ojanen, Sarmanto and Laine. Again, the music is wonderful modern Jazz, brilliantly performed by all the participants.

EP 4 presents eleven short tracks documenting an Art Happening, mostly performed by the Finnish “underground” artist Tommi ParkoFind albums by this artist, who sings and plays a plethora of instruments. He appears solo on the first seven tracks and then is joined by other instrumentalists, including Jazz trumpeter Mike KoskinenFind albums by this artist. These tracks, although only marginally associated with Jazz, reflect the open-mindedness and diversity of the late 1960s.

Overall this is a superb effort by SvartFind albums on this label Records, which returns to life some great music, which deserves to be available for both old and young Finnish Jazz fans.

TASAVALLAN PRESIDENTTI ~ CHANGING TIMES AND MOVEMENTS
SVART 386 (Barcode: 6430077093980) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1970 - 1971 Released: 2021

This is a brilliant archival album by the pioneering Finnish Jazz-Rock Fusion / Progressive Rock group Tasavallan PresidenttiFind albums by this artist, which presents live recordings captured in Finland and Sweden in 1970 and 1971. The group was fronted by British vocalist / lyricist Frank RobsonFind albums by this artist and included saxophonist / flautist Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist, guitarist Jukka TolonenFind albums by this artist, bassist Mans GroundstroemFind albums by this artist and drummer Vesa AaltonenFind albums by this artist. The 2CD album presents thirteen tracks recorded at three separate concerts. The music is all original, except for one song (repeated twice), from the debut album “Ahead Rings OutFind albums with this title” by the brilliant British band Blodwyn PigFind albums by this artist.

Most of the material performed here was recorded for the groups second album “Tasavallan Presidentti (II)Find albums with this title” in August 1970, but was not released until spring of 1971, and therefore was yet unknown to the audiences. These live recordings, all of which offer brilliant sound quality, offer a completely new view of the legendary group, presenting them as improvisers and incredible soloists. Three of the tracks last between thirteen and seventeen minutes and are an orgy of Jazz-Rock Fusion extensive improvisation, mostly by Poyry and Tolonen (who was barely eighteen at the time).

This album is an invaluable addition to the Tasavallan Presidentti recorded legacy, especially since the group never released a live album, and is a perfect companion to the “Live In LambertlandFind albums with this title” archival album, also released earlier on Svart Records, who do an absolutely fabulous job with reissues of great Finnish music.

For European Jazz-Rock Fusion enthusiasts, this is an absolute must of course!

TASAVALLAN PRESIDENTTI ~ LIVE IN LAMBERTLAND
SVART 387 (Barcode: 6430065588559) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1972 Released: 2019

This is an archival album by the seminal Finnish Jazz-Rock Fusion / Progressive Rock group Tasavallan PresidenttiFind albums by this artist (Eng. President of the Republic). This material was recorded live on three separate occasions in the summer of 1972, after the album "LambertlandFind albums with this title" was recorded in the studio in the spring of that year, and offers mostly renditions of the material from that album except for one composition originating from the debut alum by the guitarist (see below). The recordings were done by the YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company), which similarly to the BBC has bottomless archives of absolutely sensational material recorded over the years, which offers an amazing opportunity to hear past treasures, usually captured with a superb sound quality. All the material on this 2CD album was previously unissued.

By the time this material was recorded Juhani Aaltonen left to be replaced by another superb saxophone / flute player Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist and so did Frank Robson, who was replaced by Eero Raittinen (see above). Tolonen, who started to develop a successful solo career and released his debut album "Tolonen!Find albums with this title" in 1971 (on SonetFind albums on this label), became the group´s resident composer and wrote almost all the music on the "Lambertland" album, except for one piece, which was composed by Poyry. The lyrics were written by bassist Mats HuldenFind albums by this artist, founding member of WigwamFind albums by this artist, "the other" seminal Finnish Prog supergroup at the time.

The music, as usual with live recordings, offers much more expanded versions of the studio material, which feature long and complex instrumental improvisations, and as a result bring this music closer to the Jazz-Rock Fusion idiom than the original album´s Progressive Rock ambience. The strong Jazzy influence is more obvious and allows Tolonen and Poyry to produce plenty of bloodcurdling soloing, superbly supported by the rhythm section and even the vocal parts feature some wordless vocalese. Overall this music is a splendid example what this group was capable off at their absolute best.

For lovers of early European Jazz-Rock Fusion and Progressive Rock this is an absolute gem and a must in any serious music collection of that period. Thanks to the great Finnish SvartFind albums on this label Records for their fantastic job of keeping the Finnish musical legacy alive.

HEIKKI SARMANTO SERIOUS MUSIC ENSEMBLE ~ THE HELSINKI TAPES VOL.1
SVART 398 (Barcode: 6430050667788) ~ FINLAND ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

This is the first volume of a fantastic archival release presenting the music of the great Finnish pianist / composer / bandleader Heikki SarmantoFind albums by this artist and his early quartet, called The Serious Music EnsembleFind albums by this artist, which also included Heikki´s younger brother Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist on bass and American guitarist Lance GundersonFind albums by this artist and drummer Craig HerndonFind albums by this artist. The music was recorded live at the Helsinki N-Club by the eighteen years old (at the time of course) recording enthusiast Wille SuurlaFind albums by this artist and the sound quality is absolutely gorgeous.

Readers interested in the genesis of The Serious Music Ensemble and Sarmanto´s early recording chronology are invited to read my review of the "A Boston DateFind albums with this title" album, another archival release documenting this ensemble. The music on this album, which was recorded live on October 11, 1971, features all original material, with four of the pieces composed by Sarmanto, two by Herndon and one by Gunderson. The two Herndon pieces are previously unreleased and the rest of the tracks appear on the following albums by Sarmanto: "CounterbalanceFind albums with this title", "A Boston DateFind albums with this title" and "Magic SongFind albums with this title".

The music is an early form of European Free Jazz, and although the ensemble features electric piano and guitar, has almost nothing to do with Jazz-Rock Fusion, which was extremely popular at the time. The music is mostly improvised and the live environment allows the musicians to expand their personal statements and venture into lengthy solos. But in spite of the Free Form atmosphere, the music remains at all times superbly coherent. It is absolutely stunning to see how concise and minimalistic music like this one can express so much and be so rich in expression, staying elegant and aesthetically superior.

There is no doubt that this is some of the most interesting early European Free Form music. Readers interesting in more comprehensive analysis of this music and its relation to American Free Form music at the time are again invited to check out the a.m. review of the "A Boston DateFind albums with this title" album.

It is a miracle that such an exquisite material, both as far as the music and the recording quality are concerned, is finally released, almost half a Century after it was recorded. Kudos to SvartFind albums on this label Records for releasing this and other archival Finnish Jazz albums and keeping the legacy of the Finnish Jazz alive!

SVART 399 (Barcode: 6430050667818) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1971 - 1972 Released: 2016

This is the second volume of a fantastic archival release presenting the music of the great Finnish pianist / composer / bandleader Heikki SarmantoFind albums by this artist and his early quartet, called The Serious Music EnsembleFind albums by this artist, which also included Heikki´s younger brother Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist on bass and American guitarist Lance GundersonFind albums by this artist and drummer Craig HerndonFind albums by this artist. Wonderful vocalist Maija HapuojaFind albums by this artist sings on nine tracks and saxophonist Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist plays on one track.

The music on this album, which was recorded live on October 11, 1971 and December 4, 1972, features almost entirely original material composed by Sarmanto, except for one track which was composed by the little known American pianist Herbie NicholsFind albums by this artist. The Nichols piece is previously unreleased and the rest of the tracks appear on the following albums by Sarmanto: "CounterbalanceFind albums with this title", "Like A FragonardFind albums with this title", "A Boston DateFind albums with this title", "Flowers In The WaterFind albums with this title" and "Everything Is ItFind albums with this title" and the Koivistoinen album "3rd VersionFind albums with this title".

The music is an early form of modern European Jazz, and although the ensemble features electric piano and guitar, it has only a limited proximity to Jazz-Rock Fusion, which was extremely popular at the time. The music is mostly song related, in contrast to the music presented on the first volume, but is still extensively improvised and quite complex. Hapuoja´s vocals and vocalese parts take the music into a different dimension and her performances are simply hair-raising. There is a strong sense of melody but the lengthy tunes develop significantly from the initial statement of the melodic theme to powerful instrumental climaxes, serving as vehicles for the musicians to fully explore their ideas.

There is no doubt that this is some of the most interesting early modern European Jazz, which by the time this music was recorded had already established its own identity. It is also a superb document of the burgeoning Finnish Jazz scene, which was simply exploding with talent at the time. The songs are also a marvelous example of the Poetry & Jazz idiom, which enjoyed a wonderful and fruitful bloom during the early days of Finnish Jazz.

SVART 400 (Barcode: 6430050667849) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz

This is the third volume of a fantastic archival release presenting the music of the great Finnish pianist / composer / bandleader Heikki SarmantoFind albums by this artist and his early quartet, called The Serious Music EnsembleFind albums by this artist, which also included Heikki´s younger brother Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist on bass and American guitarist Lance GundersonFind albums by this artist and drummer Craig HerndonFind albums by this artist. Readers interested in the genesis of The Serious Music Ensemble and Sarmanto´s early recording chronology are invited to read my review of the "A Boston DateFind albums with this title" album, another archival release documenting this ensemble. The music on this album, which was recorded live on October 11, 1971 and December 4, 1972, features entirely original material, with two compositions each by Sarmanto, Herndon and Koivistoinen. The two Herndon pieces are previously unreleased and the rest of the tracks appear on the following albums by Sarmanto: "CounterbalanceFind albums with this title", "A Boston DateFind albums with this title" and "MoonflowerFind albums with this title". and the Koivistoinen album "3rd VersionFind albums by this artist".

The music is an early form of modern European Jazz, and although the ensemble features electric piano and guitar, it has only a limited proximity to Jazz-Rock Fusion, which was extremely popular at the time. On the four tracks on which Koivistoinen is featured as the main soloist, the music is mostly swinging, with clearly stated melodic themes, which are then expanded into lengthy improvisations. Both Sarmanto and Koivistoinen display superb instrumental abilities, and even this "informal" live recording clearly emphasizes their respective talents. The two quartet tracks without the saxophonist are more Free Form oriented, similar to the material included on the first volume of this release. All the performances are a showcase of great interplay and cooperation between the participants.

There is no doubt that this is some of the most interesting early modern European Jazz, which by the time this music was recorded had already established its own identity. It is also a superb document of the burgeoning Finnish Jazz scene, which was simply exploding with talent at the time. Readers interested in the circumstances surrounding the recording of the "3rd VersionFind albums with this title" album are welcome to read my liner notes of the album.

TUSMORKE ~ FORT BAK LYSET
SVART 401 (Barcode: 6430050666088) ~ NORWAY ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2014 - 2015 Released: 2016

This is the third album by Norwegian Prog group TusmorkeFind albums by this artist, which consists of twin brothers: vocalist / bassist Benedikt MomrakFind albums by this artist and vocalist / flautist Kristoffer MomrakFind albums by this artist (both playing a plethora of other instruments between them), keyboardist Lars Fredrik FroislieFind albums by this artist and drummer Martin Nordrum KneppenFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven original songs, all written by the Momrak brothers.

From the very first moment the music starts playing it is pretty obvious that the band decided to go back to the glorious tradition of the original Progressive Rock from the late 1960s / early 1970s, and skip the tedious Neo-Prog idiom completely. Musically Tusmorke is heavily influenced by Jethro TullFind albums by this artist, but combines in their music many other motifs, including Nordic Folklore, Medieval Music, and some Heavy / Dark Rock, creating a wonderful amalgam that can justly be called Prog, despite the fact that the idiom has been gone for almost five decades. The subject matter involves Norwegian mythology, which apparently is as rich and mysterious as any other existing mythology.

Although the music is pretty complex and offers several themes within each song, the songs are more condensed this time, ranging between four and eight minutes, and as such more coherent, but still allow the creation of atmospheric buildup and structural dynamics. The prevailing ambience of Medieval troubadours and Gregorian chanting is absolutely magical.

The music is deeply soaked in the keyboards sound (as the band does not feature a lead guitar), but those sound (or are) authentic like the keyboards of the original period, rather than the synthesizer imitating the past, which adds considerably to the authenticity and overall atmosphere of the music. The vocals, which in most cases are sung unisono, are not necessarily at the epicenter of the music and are skillfully integrated in the overall aural experience.

The sound quality of the album is rather murky, which adds to the retro effect, but the music suffers to some extent, but charmingly so. Hopefully this music will never fall into Steven WilsonFind albums by this artist’s claws. The album is now out of print and is pretty difficult to find, but it is definitely worth the effort of finding a copy.

Overall it is quite obvious that Tusmorke is one of the few true Prog bands active today and their albums belong to the finest achievements of the idiom in 2010s. This is an absolute must for all Prog lovers, as are all other albums released by the band so far. Brilliant stuff!

EDWARD VESALA TRIO ~ NANA
SVART 421 (Barcode: 6430065585183) ~ FINLAND ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2018

This is a reissue of the iconic debut album by the Godfather of modern Finnish Jazz drummer / composer / bandleader Edward VesalaFind albums by this artist and his trio with Finnish saxophonist Juhani AaltonenFind albums by this artist and Norwegian bassist Arild AndersenFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven original compositions, four by Aaltonen, one each by Vesala and Andersen and one co-composed by all three members of the trio. Finnish trumpeter Mike KoskinenFind albums by this artist, who was supposed to play on the album, fell ill and the recording went down in history as a trio affair.

This was the first ever Finnish Free Jazz album and except for the little known album "NykysuomalaistaFind albums with this title" (Contemporary Finnish) recorded a year earlier, on which Vesala and Aaltonen appeared only on the B side of the LP, this was the debut full album for both of them.

The music is typical of the early European Free Jazz wave, which exploded on both sides of the Iron Curtain by the late 1960s. Vesala enlisted Anderson (who was a few months younger than him) to play with the trio as Anderson had already gained experience playing Free Jazz with Don CherryFind albums by this artist and others. The cooperation proved to be of crucial importance for Vesala, as it led to him being introduced to Norwegian saxophonist Jan GarbarekFind albums by this artist. In 1972 Vesala took part in his first ECMFind albums on this label album, the Jan Garbarek´s "TriptykonFind albums with this title" and soon after recorded his debut album for the label "Nan MadolFind albums with this title". He recorded five more albums for ECM and also participated on albums by Polish trumpeter Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist released by the label.

In retrospect, the album is not only a highly important document of Finnish / European Jazz, but also a piece of music that still sounds vibrant and exciting, in spite of the fact that it was recorded five decades earlier.

This remastered edition is the first ever appearance of this historic album on CD, and considering its immense importance, it is an absolute must for any serious European Free Jazz connoisseur!

EERO KOIVISTOINEN ~ LABYRINTH (40TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION)
SVART 435 (Barcode: 6430065581413) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1977 Released: 2017

This is a reissue of an iconic album by one of the Godfathers of modern Finnish Jazz, saxophonist / composer / bandleader Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist, which was his second release on the legendary LoveFind albums by this artist Records label. The album was recorded in a classic Jazz quartet setting with Russian born pianist Vladimir ShafranovFind albums by this artist, bassist Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist and drummer Reino LaineFind albums by this artist. The original album presents eight tracks, three of which are parts of the suite that gave the album its title. This remastered and expanded 2CD edition adds an entire second CD of alternate takes and outtakes, more than doubling the playing time of original LP.

Koivistoinen´s music embraced a stunning stylistic diversity, which crossed genres and idioms from Free Jazz to Jazz-Rock Fusion, Progressive Rock, Jazz & Poetry, children´s songs, World Music and others. His biography, recorded legacy and list of achievements are truly remarkable and can serve as an example of excellence and inspiration.

This album presents him as a classic modern mainstream Master, a post-Coltrane virtuoso, as well as a weaver of beautiful, soulful melodic themes, which are ideal vehicles for extended improvisations. The superb musicians playing with him are able to support his soloing ideally, with amazing piano accompaniment and soloing by Shafranov and a most sympathetic and elegant work by the rhythm section.

This edition enables the listener to compare the originally selected takes with the alternate takes, which offer a myriad of subtle differences, slight tempo changes and other variations, which are of course characteristic of the process of recording a Jazz album, with each take capturing a unique creative moment.

In retrospect this album stands out as one of the finest Finnish Jazz recordings of all time, an absolute classic which lost nothing of its power of expression and timeless beauty over time. It definitely earned a "must have" status for any serious Finnish / European Jazz collection and this expanded edition is even more deserving. Absolutely essential!

Koivistoinen is still active today and seems to be as creative as ever, which is awe inspiring. I can only wish you many more years of activity and heath, my Friend!

The music is all within the modern mainstream Jazz tradition, showcasing Koivistoinen’s brilliant composing / arranging skills and superb performances by some of the best American Jazz musicians active at the time.

Koivistoinen’s ties with American Jazz go back in time to the years spent at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he absorbed the knowledge he would brilliantly utilize during his future career. He always showed a deep respect towards the American Jazz tradition, but at the same time presented a highly individual voice, which went beyond the boundaries of that tradition and incorporated European musical values and his native Finnish influences, turning him into one of the most versatile and prominent European Jazz personalities, as the music included here brilliantly exemplifies.

It is of course great to see these two important albums expanded and made available again, thanks to the exemplary work done by SvartFind albums on this label Records, which treats the Finnish musical treasures with the respect they deserve, preserving the Cultural values, which are perhaps more important today than ever, in these dark days.

TASAVALLAN PRESIDENTTI ~ STATE VISIT
SVART 585 (Barcode: 6430080231034) ~ FINLAND ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1972 Released: 2022

This is an archival live release by the legendary Finnish Jazz-Rock Fusion / Progressive Rock group Tasavallan PresidenttiFind albums by this artist. It presents six tracks recorded by the second lineup of the group, which included vocalist Eero RaittinenFind albums by this artist, flautists / saxophonist / keyboardist Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist, guitarist Jukka TolonenFind albums by this artist, bassist Heikki VirtanenFind albums by this artist and drummer Vesa AaltonenFind albums by this artist. The music was recorded live by the Swedish Radio during two separate concerts performed five months apart in 1973, and offers an exceptional sound quality and clarity. All the material is previously unreleased.

The album presents six tracks, three of which are of extended duration (14, 19 or 21 minutes+) and the other three are shorter (6 or 7 minutes+), which means that the band was able to play at will without any time restrictions usually set during a studio recording. The material was composed almost completely by Tolonen, except for one tune composed by Poyry.

Musically the band was light-years ahead of most of their contemporaries, both in Finland and in Europe at large, mixing Rock with Jazz and even Improvised Music already at this early stage. The three expanded pieces show how the music flowed organically incorporating pre-composed material and then improvising on the themes at length. The band is somewhat less experimental and Free Form oriented than what can be heard on the “The Lost 1971 Studio SessionFind albums with this title” but still there is a lot of improvisations, which are completely spontaneously created in the spur of the moment, which of course was quite normal in Jazz but rarely encountered in Rock or Prog. The material includes mostly compositions from the brilliant “LambertlandFind albums with this title” and “Milky Way MosesFind albums with this title” (not yet recorded at the time) albums.

Overall, this is an absolutely astounding find as far as Finnish music is concerned and a Milestone of recorded Finnish music of the early 1970s, both thanks to the quality and scarcity of such material and the incredible sound quality it was preserved in. This is an absolute must have for all Finnish / European Fusion / Prog fans, no questions asked!

SONNY ROLLINS / HEIKKI SARMANTO ~ LIVE AT FINLANDIA HALL, HELSINKI 1972
SVART 609 (Barcode: 6430080233304) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1972 Released: 2023

By mid-1971 the great American saxophonist / composer Sonny RollinsFind albums by this artist returned to public performances following his “second sabbatical”, and in the summer of 1972 he recorded his first new studio album in six years, starting the thirty years long stint with the legendary MilestoneFind albums on this label Records label, which resulted in twenty-two albums, and which earned him the title of “Saxophone Colossus”.

Finnish pianist / composer Heikki SarmantoFind albums by this artist was the first Finn to be awarded a scholarship at the Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1968. His arrival in America was soon after followed by a hyperactive activity of performing on the local Boston scene, to be extended afterward also to the NY scene, where Sarmanto met, among many other American Jazz musicians, also with Sonny Rollins. When Rollins was invited to perform at the Finland Festival in the summer of 1972, he opted to play a concert with the Heikki Sarmanto trio, with Sarmanto on the Fender Rhodes electric piano, his brother Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist on bass and Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist on drums. The historic concert took place at the magnificent Finlandia Hall, an architectural marvel, which was completed only a few months earlier. The concert was recorded by the YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company), and is presented herein for the first time fifty years after it was recorded. Sarmanto remembers:

“When we talked about the concert at The Finlandia Hall, we both remembered that we had a full house with an enthusiastic audience. We also remembered that Sonny stayed at the classic Hotel Vaakuna and that he bought some 10 pairs of nice bell-bottoms from the Seppälä clothing store in Helsinki.”

The music is everything one might have hoped for, with extensive improvisations and incredible soloing by the musicians. Two standards and one original by Rollins, which last between sixteen and twenty-four minutes, offer ample opportunity to illustrate both the quartet vibe and individual virtuosity. Rollins seems to be especially in high spirits and his powerful and expressive playing, full of sense of humor, is simply marvelous. He even manages to quote some hints of Jean SibeliusFind albums by this artist’ “Finlandia” tone poem as a tribute to the venue. Sarmanto’s electric piano offers a fresh aura and delicate melodious sensitivity, his brother’s bass playing swings and pulsates superbly and Rosnell’s drumming drives the music like a ship with sails full of wind and his solo, which ends the concert, leaves the audience ready for a standing ovation.

American Jazz musicians often performed in Europe and some even relocated to Europe (including Finland) in view of the racist politics and lack of Artistic recognition they were exposed to back home at the time. In most cases American Jazz musicians would come over to Europe with their combos, and the fact that Rollins decided to play with the Finns speaks volumes about his respect for Sarmanto’s talent and personality, that continued for years to come. Sarmanto mentions that:

“Later on, in the early 80s, Sonny´s and Heikki´s collaboration resulted in a major project. Sonny hired Heikki to arrange, orchestrate and conduct Sonny´s “Concerto For Tenor Saxophone and Orchestra”. This massive two-hour work was premiered in Tokyo in 1986 with Yomiuri Nippon Symphony OrchestraFind albums by this artist, conducted by Heikki, Sonny as soloist. The premier was a success, and after Tokyo, Sonny and Heikki took the concerto to Italy, where it was performed at Ravenna and Parma Festivals with Arturo Toscanini OrchestraFind albums by this artist, again with great success!”

The fact that Finnish Jazz fans are able to hear this music now, so many years after it was recorded, is a true marvel and blessing. Thanks to the tireless effort by the SvartFind albums on this label Records label, we are constantly re-introduced to important pieces of Finnish Jazz legacy, which should not be forgotten.

AGA TAURA CONFAB / ENRICO RAVA ~ EL CONVIDADO
SVART / MONDO 381 (Barcode: 6430065589419) ~ ARGENTINA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1975 Released: 2019

In June of 1975 Italian trumpeter / composer Enrico RavaFind albums by this artist recorded his debut album for the prestigious German ECMFind albums on this label label, entitled "The Pilgrim And The StarsFind albums with this title", which upon its release later that year kick-started his solo career. The album was recorded with an international lineup of ECM stable musicians: American guitarists John AbercrombieFind albums by this artist (who also released his ECM debut the same year) and a marvelous Scandinavian rhythm section consisting of Swedish bassist Palle DanielssonFind albums by this artist and Norwegian drummer Jon ChristensenFind albums by this artist.

A trumpet virtuoso and an exceptionally gifted composer, Rava established himself on the international scene during the entire decade earlier, playing and recording with the elite of Avant-Garde Jazz players of that period both in Europe and in America, which included Steve LacyFind albums by this artist, Roswell RuddFind albums by this artist, Charlie HadenFind albums by this artist, Don CherryFind albums by this artist, Argentinean Gato BarbieriFind albums by this artist (during his stint in Italy), Lee KonitzFind albums by this artist and others. By the early 1970s Rava embraced a more melodic approach to Jazz and started to cooperate with Fusion musicians, a path common to many of his European contemporaries. This led to his participation in the recording of the seminal Jazz-Rock opera "Escalator Over The HillFind albums with this title" by Carla BleyFind albums by this artist as well as the recording of the little known album for the legendary German MPSFind albums on this label label called "Katcharpari RavaFind albums with this title", where he played vis-à-vis Abercrombie and which, when first heard by ECM owner Manfred EicherFind albums by this artist, led to inviting them both to record for ECM in the first place.

What led Enrico Rava to take part in the recording of the obscure album you are holding in your hand, which took place in December of 1975 in Buenos Aires, the Capital of Argentina, you ask? Well it turns out Rava had some family in Buenos Aires, which he was visiting at the time and which is hardly surprising considering the fact that most of Argentina´s inhabitants are descendants of European ethnic groups, with more than 55% of them having Italian origins. Therefore being Italian and having family in Argentina is a highly probable outcome. Quite accidently, Rava already visited Buenos Aires almost a decade earlier, when playing there with the Steve Lacy quartet. A performance by that quartet recorded in Buenos Aires in November of 1966 was released as the album "The Forest And The ZooFind albums with this title" on the ESPFind albums on this label label.

The rest of the story, however, is pure Jazz "improvisation". Upon learning that Rava is in town, local Jazz aficionados swiftly decided to size the day and hook him up with local musician and record an album. It is difficult to know today if Rava and the Argentineans realized that he was already under ECM contract and they needed to ask Eicher to give them permission to make this recording, which was highly unlikely he would. But considering South American attitude towards rules and regulations nobody probably cared too much about it, which of course in retrospect should make us thankful.

The team selected to accompany Rava, named as "Aga Taura ConfabFind albums by this artist", included three Argentinean Jazz musicians: pianist Fernando GelbardFind albums by this artist, bassist Adalberto CevascoFind albums by this artist and drummer Nestor AstaritaFind albums by this artist and an Argentinean Folk percussionist Farias GómezFind albums by this artist, who also contributed vocalese parts. Although less experienced and with no international exposure at the time, they stood their ground formidably and performed alongside Rava without any inferiority complex. Of the five tunes on the album, four are performed by the quintet, where Gelbard plays the Fender Rhodes electric piano, and one is a duet consisting of Rava and Gelbard, who plays acoustic piano. Not surprisingly Rava´s performances are the absolute pinnacle of the session, encompassing different styles and approaches moving between melodic lyricism and Free Form explorations. He knowingly pays tribute to his idols: Miles Davis and Chet Baker, but avoids copying any explicit phrasing and crafts his distinctly own voice.

The spontaneous recording session lasted for a few hours, just long enough to capture five tracks totaling in about forty two minutes of music. The sound quality of the recording turned out to be better than one might expect, with clear, crispy tone and excellent separation, which suited the music perfectly. The music includes a Rava original, which appears only on this album, a standard, a composition by the Brazilian composer João DonatoFind albums by this artist, a composition by Argentinean saxophonist / composer Horacio BorraroFind albums by this artist and finally a composition by the quintet´s percussionist Farias Gómez – a mixed bag which offers a strong World Music influence and plenty of opportunities for the musicians to show their chops.

In retrospect this is definitely a piece of music that deserves to be revisited, not only for nostalgic reasons, but primarily as a historical document of the period, as well as proof of the fact that music knows no boundaries. Due to its rarity the original LP release is a highly sought after collectors item to Jazz aficionados all over the world, not only connoisseurs of Enrico Rava, but also enthusiasts of early Jazz-World Fusion.

BENOIT WIDEMANN ~ STRESS!
SVART / MONDO 391 (Barcode: 6430065589259) ~ FRANCE ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1977 Released: 2020

By the late 1970s the synthesizer was undoubtedly the King of Pop / Rock. There was hardly any music making unit at the time that did not feature the synthesizer in its arsenal, and the electronically generated sounds were rapidly and consistently dominating the popular music scene, achieving total dominance a decade later.

It all started really promising with the introduction of the Hammond Organ in the mid-1930s, which was warmly embraced by the Jazz community and expanded the instrumental range by another warm and funky sounding instrument. By the mid-1960s the Hammond Organ became also a much beloved member of the young Rock family, especially by the more ambitious early Progressive Rock pioneers, soon to be joined by the new kid on the block, the Moog synthesizer.

The 1970s brought an avalanche of rapidly developing new synthesizers, which were able to produce a growing range of unearthly soundscapes and capable of imitating every existing musical instrument on earth, including the drums, and beyond. By the 1980s popular music became one gigantic synthesized buzz of undistinguishable source, as if the earth was invaded by an alien race that was terrorizing the humans and dissolving their brains using synthesizers. It often seems that this situation did not improve much since, and the only desert islands of relative sanity survived thanks to Classical Music and Jazz.

Therefore one could speculate that it was the synthesizer, which brought upon us the downfall of Popular Music and destroyed the magnificent achievements of the Golden Era of Rock (1965-1975) down to a pulp. Of course other might think differently, especially those who still play guitars, basses, drums or (God forbid) a flute ;)

"Stress!Find albums with this title" is a classic example of a synthesizer dominated music, although it makes some use of non-synthesized sounds, like the acoustic piano or drums. The composer and chief performer, Benoit WidemannFind albums by this artist, plays an array of synthesizers, as appropriate for the occasion and is accompanied, although only occasionally, by other musicians, all representatives of the French Progressive Rock camaraderie around the legendary group MagmaFind albums by this artist, firmly led by drummer / composer Christian VanderFind albums by this artist with an ever changing lineup, which more or less included the entire French Prog / Zeuhl scene over time.

The music is all over the place, with touches of early Techno, Funk, Prog of course and traces of Jazz, hardly a consistent flow of musical ideas, but an excellent demonstration of Widemann´s abilities as a composer and player. Well recorded and offering a god example of the diversity of sounds that the synthesizers were able to produce at the time, with a touch of the obvious nostalgic tinge, this album is still a very enjoyable listening experience today and certainly has more to offer than most music produced at present.

The French Progressive Rock, similarly to French Classical Music, has a distinctive ambience, which this album reflects very well. Less focused on melody and rhythmic complexity, this music is more about the atmospheric statement, the moods and the colors of the music and its influence on the listener´s psyche.

Although previously reissued, soon do disappear again, this music certainly deserves to be available to listeners looking for non-trivial music that the past has to offer. Enjoy!
