  | OLLI AHVENLAHTI / UMO ~ SEAWINDS: THE COMPLETE YLE STUDIO RECORDINGS 1976-1981 SVART 171 (Barcode: 6430065583486) ~ FINLAND ~ Big Band Jazz Recorded: 1976 - 1981 Released: 2018
This is an archival album collecting all the recordings by Finnish keyboardist / composer Olli AhvenlahtiFind albums by this artist recorded with the superb UMOFind albums by this artist Jazz Orchestra for the YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company). The album presents fifteen tracks, including the five-part "Seawinds" suite, which gave the album its title. All the music was composed and arranged by Ahvenlahti.
UMO, founded in 1975, turned out to be Finland´s most renowned Jazz Big Band / Orchestra, active to this very day. Over the years its ranks included the absolute who’s who of the Finnish Jazz scene, as well as numerous international guests, and produced a remarkable recording legacy.
On these recordings the UMO was in its early days, but already offered a remarkable level of professionalism and talent, as well as a typical European approach to the Big Band Jazz sound and style. It included such formidable players as saxophonists Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist, Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist, Juhani AaltonenFind albums by this artist, Pentti LahtiFind albums by this artist and Paroni PaakkunainenFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Kaj BacklundFind albums by this artist, trombonist Mircea StanFind albums by this artist, pianist Heikki SarmantoFind albums by this artist, bassists Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist and Pekka PohjolaFind albums by this artist, drummer Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist and many others. Ahvenlahti played keyboards and the orchestra was conducted by Esko LinnavalliFind albums by this artist. Three of the tracks feature the wonderful vocalist Irina MilanFind albums by this artist, singing music composed to Finnish poetry.
The music is beautifully melodic and at the same time complex enough to keep the listener on his toes. The superb Big Band arrangements and wonderful soloing turns this album into an excellent listening experience, which is fresh and full of youthful energy with a slight Fusion tinge. All the sections of the Big Band are perfectly utilized to create a big sound, but the listener is able to hear each individual; instrument. The excellent rhythm section drives the music forward with zest and elegance.
Overall this is a great Big Band Jazz album that lost nothing of its power and freshness over time and sounds every bit as exciting as it did at the time of the recording. For European Big Band Jazz fans this is a true feast and for the many UMO followers around the world this is an absolute must have. Wholeheartedly recommended!

  | DAY IS OVER ~ DAY IS OVER SVART 051 (Barcode: 6430065585169) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 1975 Released: 2018
This is a reissue of the only album by one-off Finnish-Danish Jazz quintet Day Is OverFind albums by this artist, which comprised of Finnish saxophonist Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Esko LinnavalliFind albums by this artist and drummer Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist and Danish trumpeter Allan BotschinskyFind albums by this artist and bassist Niels-Henning Orsted PedersenFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight original compositions, one each by Koivistoinen, Linnavalli and Orsted Pedersen and the rest by other Finnish Jazz composers.
The quintet was formed during the Finnish Jazz Music Workshop, which was organized to prepare the legendary UMOFind albums by this artist Orchestra / Big Band in late 1974 and the album was recorded in February 1975 in Stockholm. Linnavalli commissioned the compositions for the album from several leading Finnish Jazz composers at the time and the musicians were exposed to the music without having time to rehearse it – the remarkable result proves the remarkable level of professionalism and talent by all the participants. Of course Orsted Pedersen was already one of the most revered and sought after bass players in Europe, playing and recording with all visiting American Jazz stars.
The music is all strictly melody based modern mainstream Jazz, but it has a distinct Scandinavian touch and the compositions reflect the unique Finnish music spirit, which can be heard distinctly on the recordings originating in the 1970s. The performances are brilliant from start to finish and offer a great opportunity to hear the brilliant work by Orsted Pedersen, who firmly keeps the music swinging smoothly.
Sadly the quintet disbanded as quickly as it was formed, leaving this sole album as its only recorded legacy. However, the UMO Orchestra was formed a few months after the Day Is Over adventure, and exists to this very day, producing some of the finest music out there.
Overall this is a wonderful piece of Finnish (and Nordic) Jazz history, well worth being remembered and still a great piece of quality enjoyable music. Warmly recommended!

  | OTTO DONNER TREATMENT ~ EN SOISI SEN PÄÄTTYVÄN LOVE 014 ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz & Poetry
Finns have not only great respect for their musicians, but also for their poets and therefore they produced a large body of work where music and poetry are combined. This is one of such projects for which the composer / arranger Otto DonnerFind albums by this artist created music to poems by Pentti SaarikoskiFind albums by this artist to be performed by a vocal group and jazz ensemble. Recorded in 1970, this excellent example of Finnish jazz includes some of the best players on the local scene at the time (Juhani AaltonenFind albums by this artist - tenor sax & flute, Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist - drums, a.m.o.). Donner plays trumpet & vibes and directs the whole project.
The music is typical European jazz of the period, melodic but complex and constantly surprising. The composer also cleverly includes shades of Finnish folk music in the background of the compositions. The album includes 18 short pieces, all quite different, but flowing naturally into one coherent suite. The group vocals resemble the European vocal jazz tradition as demonstrated by the French group Les Double SixFind albums by this artist or NOVIFind albums by this artist from Poland. Sublime music for people with highly developed and sensitive taste glands.

  | JUKKA HAURU / NONO SODERBERG / FINNFOREST / ELONKORJUU ~ POP LIISA VOL. 05 & VOL. 06 SVART 009 ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1976 - 1977 Released: 2016
The "Popstudio" / "Jazzstudio" broadcasts were usually dedicated to one band / artist, but in some cases two acts were combined into one show, which allowed each of them just about twenty minutes to perform, as is the case on these two sessions.
Guitarist / composer Jukka HauruFind albums by this artist appeared already on the "Pop Liisa Vol. 01 & Vol. 02Find albums with this title" album some three years before this recording was captured. In the meantime he released his second album "EpisodeFind albums with this title" (on LoveFind albums on this label Records), but the band playing here was completely different from the crew that recorded the album, except for the violinist Juhani PoutanenFind albums by this artist. The other players are pianist Eero OjanenFind albums by this artist, bassist Tapani TamminenFind albums by this artist, drummer Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist and percussionist Ari ValtonenFind albums by this artist. They perform just one extended instrumental composition by Hauru, a six-part suite, which did not appear on any of his albums, a complex Jazz-Rock Fusion piece featuring lengthy Jazz improvisations.
Guitarist / composer Nono SoderbergFind albums by this artist released his debut album "NonoFind albums with this title" about a year before this recording was captured and two of the pieces from that album, which were composed by him, get expanded renditions here by a band which also includes saxophonist Reijo YlinenFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Esa KotilainenFind albums by this artist, bassist Harri MerilahtiFind albums by this artist, drummer Roope KoistinenFind albums by this artist and percussionist Esa RoswallFind albums by this artist. The music is more conventional Fusion oriented, with melodic themes and some Prog elements as well.
By the time the second broadcast presented here was captured (early 1977), the so called "first wave" of Finnish Progressive Rock / Fusion bands was almost over with Tasavallan PresidenttiFind albums by this artist already disbanded and WigwamFind albums by this artist about to be disbanded after switching to more Pop oriented music. This gave an opportunity to the "second wave" of Finnish Prog / Fusion bands like those appearing here to capture the scene.
FinnforestFind albums by this artist already had two excellent albums under their belt, the eponymous debut "FinnforestFind albums with this title" from 1975 and the follow up "Lahto MatkalleFind albums with this title" from 1976, both released on Love Records. Founded by the brothers: guitarist Pekka TegelmanFind albums by this artist and drummer Jussi TegelmanFind albums by this artist the band also included keyboardist Pertti PokkiFind albums by this artist and bassist Jarmo HiekkalaFind albums by this artist. They perform two pieces, which did not appear on the released albums, one by Pokki and the other by Jussi Tegelman. The music is strongly Fusion oriented, with some Prog elements present as well.
ElonkorjuuFind albums by this artist had a long history debuting with their album "Harvest TimeFind albums with this title" already in 1972, which was Blues-Rock oriented. Over time they disbanded and created the group again, changing the lineup and musical direction more towards Jazz-Rock Fusion and Funk. The lineup present here includes vocalist Kari TamminenFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Juha UnkilaFind albums by this artist, pianist Pekka TyniFind albums by this artist, guitarist Jukka SyreniusFind albums by this artist, bassist Veli-Pekka PessiFind albums by this artist and drummer Veikko NoutioFind albums by this artist. They perform three songs, all by Syrenius, which showcase the stylistic diversity of their music.
Overall this is some of the most staggering music created in Europe in the early to mid 1970s that one is able to hear and for Fusion and Jazz oriented Prog-heads this is an absolute must have! Side Note The Finnish independent label SvartFind albums on this label Records released an unprecedented series of albums called Pop Liisa and Jazz Liisa, which present priceless historical recordings of Finnish Rock, Progressive Rock, Jazz-Rock Fusion and Jazz music, recorded live and broadcasted from the Liisankatu Studios in Helsinki under the "Popstudio" and "Jazzstudio" monikers between 1972 and 1977. The studios were owned by the YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company), a public broadcasting service, which not only allowed the burgeoning Finnish music scene at the time to be exposed but also carefully archived the recordings for future generations. All this incredible music was previously unissued and collectively is probably the most important document of Finnish music from that period ever assembled.
The music was released on 36 LPs (Pop Liisa Vol. 01 to Vol. 18 and Jazz Liisa Vol. 01 to Vol. 18) and on 18 CDs with every two consecutive volumes combined on one CD.
The sound quality is absolutely superb, often better than the sound quality on the LPs released by these artists at the time. Many of the groups appearing on these albums never managed to record an album and these recordings are the only recorded legacy in existence of their activity. The released are accompanied by well researched and intelligent liner notes.
This archival project is an outstanding example of how Cultural Legacy should be treated as well as of exemplary dedication to record producing professionalism.

  | EERO KOIVISTOINEN ~ MUUSA JA RUUSA SVART 049 (Barcode: 6430050666866) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz & Poetry Recorded: 1971 Released: 2016
This is a reissue of a delightful and little known Jazz & Poetry project (this time intended for children) by Finnish composer / saxophonist Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist who wrote the music to poems by Finnish poetess Kirsi KunnaksenFind albums by this artist. He enlisted a group of great vocalists and musicians to realize this album, which include vocalists Vesa-Matti LoiriFind albums by this artist and Eero RaittinenFind albums by this artist, bassist Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist, guitarist Hasse WalliFind albums by this artist, drummer Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist, pianist Eero OjanenFind albums by this artist, saxophonist / flautist Juhani AaltonenFind albums by this artist and many others. The album presents thirteen tracks, three of which are instrumentals and ten have poems as lyrics. All the music and arrangements are by Koivistoinen. This remastered edition offers also the texts of the poems and exact lineup of all the tracks as well as a nice (bilingual) article about the whole project.
Although obviously not a bona fide Jazz project, this album is a great document of Koivistoinen openness and diversity as a musician and composer. Exposing young children to quality music is a crucial part of their Cultural education, a fact that is almost completely neglected today with children being fed absolute infantile rubbish in the media. This album, almost fifty years old, is better and more challenging than most of what passes al children´s music today.
In retrospect this stuff sounds fresh and exciting today, completely contemporary. Even listeners not familiar with the Finnish language should be able to enjoy these fabulous musical stories and get intuitively what they are all about.
Overall this is a wonderful example of the ingenuity of Koivistoinen and the entire Finnish Jazz scene at the time, full of love and understanding of the young souls. Still delightful!

  | EERO KOIVISTOINEN ~ THE FRONT IS BREAKING LOVE 188 ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1976
Apart from Edward VesalaFind albums by this artist, Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist is probably the most well known Finnish jazz musician outside of his native country, due to his US residency and numerous recordings around the world. Deeply influenced by John ColtraneFind albums by this artist, he started his jazz adventure playing free jazz in cahoots with Edward Vesala and Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist as early as 1964 (which was about the time European free jazz was developing fiercely). Later on he moved away from free jazz and concentrated more on structured and carefully composed music. By the time this album was recorded, the jazz world was deeply involved in the Jazz-Rock Fusion explosion, following Miles DavisFind albums by this artist’ pioneering work in the field and later on groups like John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist’s Mahavishnu OrchestraFind albums by this artist. Inspired by these developments, Koivistoinen decided to record a fusion album, for which he composed the music. The carefully assembled a dreamy combo to record the music, in which he gathered the best Scandinavian musicians from both the jazz and Progressive Rock genres, including Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist (drums) and Olli AhvenlahtiFind albums by this artist (piano) – Finland / jazz, Jukka TolonenFind albums by this artist (guitar – Tasavallan PresidenttiFind albums by this artist) and Pekka PohjolaFind albums by this artist (bass – WigwamFind albums by this artist) – Finland / Prog and Wlodek GulkowskiFind albums by this artist (keyboards) and Georg WadeniusFind albums by this artist (guitar – Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist) - Sweden (well Gulkowski was a Polish refugee) / Fusion. The result is surely one of the best, most sophisticated and musically uplifting fusion albums ever recorded and an absolute must for any fan of the genre. This was to be the only fusion album Koivistoinen would record, as he returned to “pure” jazz soon after.

  | EERO KOIVISTOINEN ~ THE ORIGINAL SIN SVART 307 (Barcode: 6430077093621) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 1971 Released: 2021
"The Original SinFind albums with this title", recorded on August 13, 16 & 23, 1971, was the fourth album released by Finnish saxophonist / composer / arranger Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist. Aged 25 at the time, Koivistoinen was already recognized at the time as a central figure on the burgeoning Finnish Jazz scene.
During his student days at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, one of the first European educational institutions to recognize Jazz as a valid musical Art Form worthy of academic studies, Koivistoinen frequented the Finland´s Capital Jazz club scene, performing at jam sessions. By 1967 he already had his first trio with bassist Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist (brother of pianist / composer Heikki SarmantoFind albums by this artist) and the legendary drummer Edward VesalaFind albums by this artist, who is often considered as the Godfather of modern Finnish Jazz. The trio played adventurous free-improvised Jazz, being the pioneers of Free Jazz in their country. Sadly, the trio never recorded an album and the only recorded evidence of their performances can be found on a live EP recorded at the Espoo Jazz Festival in 1967.
In 1967 the newly founded Finnish Jazz Federation (FJF), probably the best professional Jazz organization in Europe at the time, selected Koivistoinen as the first recipient of the annual Georgie Award in recognition for his outstanding talents. Two years later Koivistoinen performed for the first time outside of his country´s borders at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland (his performance at Montreux as a member of the International Festival Big Band was recorded and released on PolydorFind albums on this label), winning the festival´s competition for bands, which in turn led to his appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival in the US, exposing his talents on the global scale.
In the early 1970s Koivistoinen continued his studies in Jazz composition at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where numerous of his compatriot Jazz musicians also studied over the years, starting with Heikki Sarmanto, who upon his return home brought over the American guitarist Lance GundersonFind albums by this artist who plays on this album. During the 1970s Koivistoinen recorded a stream of exceptional albums, which featured his compositional and arranging skills as well as his brilliant saxophone playing. Constantly re-inventing himself, his music kept changing during this decade and touched upon various Jazz genres, including his pioneering contribution to Jazz-Rock Fusion, but always remaining his very own.
Starting with "ValtakuntaFind albums with this title" (1968) and continuing with "OdysseusFind albums with this title" (1969), "For ChildrenFind albums with this title" (1970), "The Original Sin" (1971), "Muusa Ja RuusaFind albums with this title" (1971), "Wahoo!Find albums with this title" (1972), "3rd VersionFind albums with this title" (1973), "The Front Is BreakingFind albums with this title" (1976), "LabyrinthFind albums with this title" (1977) and finally "Live At The Belmont Jazz ClubFind albums with this title" (1977) Koivistoinen produced a body of work of amazing depth, beauty, sophistication and intellectual significance, which remains as a wonderful illustration of the Finnish and European Jazz heritage during that decade.
However, by the end of the 1970s, the immense popularity, which European Jazz managed to kindle, was gradually losing its steam. Record labels, owned by international mogul corporations, lost interest in any kind of adventurous music, Jazz included, and the number of Jazz releases went down considerably, a situation which affected Finland as well. Undeterred by this turn of events Koivistoinen decided to take matters into his own hands and established in 1983 one of the first musician-owned independent record labels, PROFind albums on this label Records, which enabled him to realize his musical projects.
This album is a deeply significant milestone in Koivistoinen´s musical development, since it presents for the first time the true depth of his compositions as well as his overall musical approach. It is also his first work with a large-scale ensemble, which enables him to utilize his arranging skills to a full extent.
The six compositions present here were recorded by three different lineups; a tentet ("Sinner", "Both & And" and "Rock & Roll"), a septet ("The Original Sin") and a sextet (the remaining two). The tentet comprised of: Eero Koivistoinen – tenor, alto & soprano saxophones, Tapani LuuppolaFind albums by this artist – trumpet, Jussi AaltoFind albums by this artist or Erkki LipponenFind albums by this artist – trombone, Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist – tenor & alto saxophone, Pentti LahtiFind albums by this artist – baritone saxophone, Eero OjanenFind albums by this artist – piano, Lance Gunderson – guitar, Pekka Sarmanto – bass and Reino LaineFind albums by this artist & Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist – drums. The sextet comprised of: Koivistoinen, Ojanen, Gunderson, Sarmanto, Laine and Rosnell and the septet added Unto Haapa-ahoFind albums by this artist on bass clarinet.
Both the music and the performances are absolutely breathtaking, although the album focuses on ensemble playing rather than on extensive soloing, but of course there are still plenty of most impressive solos. An atmosphere of serenity, contemplation and wide-open spaces, typical in Finnish music, prevails even in the up-tempo passages, which turns listening to this album into a most satisfying love affair with music. The fact that it is now almost 50 years old is completely meaningless in this context, where true classics only get better with time.
Thanks to SvartFind albums on this label Records for making this musical treasure available again. Listeners interested in Finnish Jazz legacy are recommended to check out also the other Svart Records reissues documenting this burgeoning period. Side Note The above are my liner notes included on this album's artwork.
I am honored when asked by the Artists to write liner notes for their albums, always hoping that my words reflect the true spirit of the music. This is also a symbol of our mutual respect and friendship developed over the years.
The same is also true when Record Labels ask me to write liner notes for their releases, mostly in the case of reissues of archival albums, which is a symbol of their appreciation of my knowledge and historical perspective and my recognition of their dedication to the preservation of the history of recorded music and the effort to keep human Culture and Aesthetics alive.

  | EERO KOIVISTOINEN WITH FRIENDS ~ JAPPA SVART 373 (Barcode: 6430077093812) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 1967 - 1968 Released: 2021
This is a sensational reissue of the one of the modern Finnish Jazz most obscure and sought after recordings, a series of four EPs released originally in 1967/68 by the Jazz Society formed by the students of the Helsinki Polytechnic (now Helsinki University of Technology), who were avid Jazz fans and some of the students were also Jazz musicians.
The album presents all the nineteen tracks, that appeared collectively on these EPs, recorded by different lineups, which featured the absolute crème de la crème of the young generation of Finnish modern Jazz players.
EP 1 presents the earliest recording by saxophonist Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist, which also includes bassist Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist and drummer Edward VesalaFind albums by this artist with a percussionist on one track and a couple of cellist on another. They perform three original compositions by Koivistoinen and the music is an example of early Finnish Free Jazz. It precedes the recording of Koivistoinen’s debut album “ValtakuntaFind albums with this title”.
EP 2 presents two original compositions by pianist Pentti HietanenFind albums by this artist, recorded by a septet, which also included trumpeter Kaj BacklundFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Ilkka KrumoFind albums by this artist, Stanley LindroosFind albums by this artist and Paroni PaakkunainenFind albums by this artist, bassist Teppo Hauta-AhoFind albums by this artist and drummer Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist. Both are wonderful example of modern European Jazz with some Free oriented soloing by the participants and superb ensemble work by the septet.
EP 3 presents three tracks, one by saxophonist Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist and two by Koivistoinen. The first is performed by Poyry with pianist Eero OjanenFind albums by this artist, Hauta-Aho and Rosnell. The second is performed by a trio with Koivistoinen, Sarmanto and drummer Reino LaineFind albums by this artist. The third is performed by a quintet with Koivistoinen, Poyry, Ojanen, Sarmanto and Laine. Again, the music is wonderful modern Jazz, brilliantly performed by all the participants.
EP 4 presents eleven short tracks documenting an Art Happening, mostly performed by the Finnish “underground” artist Tommi ParkoFind albums by this artist, who sings and plays a plethora of instruments. He appears solo on the first seven tracks and then is joined by other instrumentalists, including Jazz trumpeter Mike KoskinenFind albums by this artist. These tracks, although only marginally associated with Jazz, reflect the open-mindedness and diversity of the late 1960s.
Overall this is a superb effort by SvartFind albums on this label Records, which returns to life some great music, which deserves to be available for both old and young Finnish Jazz fans.

  | VESA-MATTI LOIRI ~ 4+20 PORTER 1512 (Barcode: 656605782027) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Rock-World Fusion Recorded: 1971 Released: 2011
"4 + 20Find albums with this title", recorded during several sessions in March 1971, was the debut album released by Finnish flautist / singer / actor Vesa-Matti LoiriFind albums by this artist. Born January 4, 1945 Loiri was already a "familiar face" on the modern Finnish Jazz scene at the time. Of course it is hard to believe that any of the album´s participants, including Loiri himself, could have possibly imagined that 40 years later he would be considered as one of the central pillars of the Finnish Culture. A true Renaissance man, Loiri developed over the years a spectacular career, both as a musician and as an actor / comedian. He recorded dozens of albums, many of which were immensely popular in his native country. He even represented Finland in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1980, singing a song dedicated to his beloved flute. He also starred in dozens of movies, many of which are considered absolute classics.
Loiri´s musical career is quite diverse, but the most important aspect of it is dedicated to his performances of songs with the lyrics written by the great Finnish poet Eino LeinoFind albums by this artist (1878-1926), the great pioneer of Finnish poetry. Loiri recorded several albums dedicated to Leino´s poetry, all of which are quite extraordinary, both musically and lyrically. Although Loiri was never a Jazz musician per se, he always cooperated on his albums with many Finnish Jazz musicians and many of these albums can be considered as Jazz albums, in a broader sense. The Eino Leino albums, therefore, should be considered as part of the Jazz & Poetry movement, which was quite popular in Europe since the 1960s.
The passionate love affair between Jazz music and Poetry originated during the Beat movement in the 1950s, when US writers and poets discovered that the freedom and improvisational character of modern Jazz could be also utilized in modern writing. The spiritual proximity between the various disciplines of Modern Art & Literature created many cross-media encounters, with Jazz musicians and poets often performing together. In the early 1960s Jazz & Poetry crossed over to Europe, first into UK and then spreading quickly all over the Continent. Jazz musicians and poets created passionate collaborations in France, Germany, Poland and the Scandinavian countries.
But in a similar way as to what happened to American Jazz, when it was absorbed by the Europeans, who amalgamated it with their European musical heritage, Jazz & Poetry also changed, when music was being composed by the Europeans not only to accompany contemporary literary works, but also Classic literature and poetry, as far back as Shakespeare´s sonnets. European Jazz musicians / composers often created music to accompany literary works from their National heritage, similar in a way to the inspirations of the European Romantic Classical composers earlier on. In Finland the Jazz & Poetry movement produced some extraordinary achievements and many of the country´s most illustrious musicians were involved with it at least at some stage of their career.
Vesa-Matti Loiri´s contributions to the movement are surely amongst the most important ones. On the gatefold cover of the "4 + 20" LP Vesa-Matti Loiri writes as follows: "This record was made spontaneously, without any great preparations. It is not meant to serve commercial purposes. This music has risen from friendship." This is in fact a concise and completely truthful description of this album. The album features Loiri the flute player. His vocal contributions here are mostly accidental and humorous (his comedian nature), except for one track, where he actually sings. For the recording he invited a group of friends, which in retrospect reads like the who´s who of Finnish Jazz at the time: saxophonist / flautist Esa PethmanFind albums by this artist (who plays piccolo flute here), saxophonist Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist, organist Tuomo TanskaFind albums by this artist, guitarist Hasse WalliFind albums by this artist (who also helped Loiri with most of the arrangements), bassist Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist and drummer Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist. Several other players contribute percussion and vocal tidbits. The music is very versatile and ranges from Jazz via Folklore to Rock and even Classical. A couple of Herbie MannFind albums by this artist´s tunes – an obvious choice by a flautist, some folklore, both international and Finnish, some Rock and some "serious" music (see below), all arranged in a Jazzy fashion and performed joyously yet somewhat informally, as indicated by Loiri´s quote. Nevertheless there are plenty of great solos here and the overall level of performance is definitely outstanding.
The album´s title is of course the Stephen StillsFind albums by this artist´ tune, first heard on the Crosby, Stills, Nash & YoungFind albums by this artist legendary "Déjà VuFind albums with this title" album. It is used here as a repeated "theme", appearing repeatedly between the tracks. The album´s most interesting track, which is the song "Itkevä Huilu", featuring Loiri´s vocals, is a clear precursor of his future Jazz & Poetry work. The song´s lyrics were written by the Finnish poet Larin KyöstiFind albums by this artist and the music by the great Finnish Classical composer Oskar MerikantoFind albums by this artist. Overall the music on this album is conserved, as in a time capsule, losing nothing of its joy and playfulness, good nature and musical friendship. Such qualities should definitely be preserved! Thanks to PorterFind albums on this label Records for making this musical treasure available again!

  | SONNY ROLLINS / HEIKKI SARMANTO ~ LIVE AT FINLANDIA HALL, HELSINKI 1972 SVART 609 (Barcode: 6430080233304) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 1972 Released: 2023
By mid-1971 the great American saxophonist / composer Sonny RollinsFind albums by this artist returned to public performances following his “second sabbatical”, and in the summer of 1972 he recorded his first new studio album in six years, starting the thirty years long stint with the legendary MilestoneFind albums on this label Records label, which resulted in twenty-two albums, and which earned him the title of “Saxophone Colossus”.
Finnish pianist / composer Heikki SarmantoFind albums by this artist was the first Finn to be awarded a scholarship at the Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1968. His arrival in America was soon after followed by a hyperactive activity of performing on the local Boston scene, to be extended afterward also to the NY scene, where Sarmanto met, among many other American Jazz musicians, also with Sonny Rollins. When Rollins was invited to perform at the Finland Festival in the summer of 1972, he opted to play a concert with the Heikki Sarmanto trio, with Sarmanto on the Fender Rhodes electric piano, his brother Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist on bass and Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist on drums. The historic concert took place at the magnificent Finlandia Hall, an architectural marvel, which was completed only a few months earlier. The concert was recorded by the YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company), and is presented herein for the first time fifty years after it was recorded. Sarmanto remembers:
“When we talked about the concert at The Finlandia Hall, we both remembered that we had a full house with an enthusiastic audience. We also remembered that Sonny stayed at the classic Hotel Vaakuna and that he bought some 10 pairs of nice bell-bottoms from the Seppälä clothing store in Helsinki.”
The music is everything one might have hoped for, with extensive improvisations and incredible soloing by the musicians. Two standards and one original by Rollins, which last between sixteen and twenty-four minutes, offer ample opportunity to illustrate both the quartet vibe and individual virtuosity. Rollins seems to be especially in high spirits and his powerful and expressive playing, full of sense of humor, is simply marvelous. He even manages to quote some hints of Jean SibeliusFind albums by this artist’ “Finlandia” tone poem as a tribute to the venue. Sarmanto’s electric piano offers a fresh aura and delicate melodious sensitivity, his brother’s bass playing swings and pulsates superbly and Rosnell’s drumming drives the music like a ship with sails full of wind and his solo, which ends the concert, leaves the audience ready for a standing ovation.
American Jazz musicians often performed in Europe and some even relocated to Europe (including Finland) in view of the racist politics and lack of Artistic recognition they were exposed to back home at the time. In most cases American Jazz musicians would come over to Europe with their combos, and the fact that Rollins decided to play with the Finns speaks volumes about his respect for Sarmanto’s talent and personality, that continued for years to come. Sarmanto mentions that:
“Later on, in the early 80s, Sonny´s and Heikki´s collaboration resulted in a major project. Sonny hired Heikki to arrange, orchestrate and conduct Sonny´s “Concerto For Tenor Saxophone and Orchestra”. This massive two-hour work was premiered in Tokyo in 1986 with Yomiuri Nippon Symphony OrchestraFind albums by this artist, conducted by Heikki, Sonny as soloist. The premier was a success, and after Tokyo, Sonny and Heikki took the concerto to Italy, where it was performed at Ravenna and Parma Festivals with Arturo Toscanini OrchestraFind albums by this artist, again with great success!”
The fact that Finnish Jazz fans are able to hear this music now, so many years after it was recorded, is a true marvel and blessing. Thanks to the tireless effort by the SvartFind albums on this label Records label, we are constantly re-introduced to important pieces of Finnish Jazz legacy, which should not be forgotten.

  | HEIKKI SARMANTO ~ NEW HOPE JAZZ MASS JAZZAGGRESSION 736 ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 1978 Released: 2022
The wonderful world of reissues, which brings back to life, and sometimes even exposes for the first time, music recorded decades earlier has been my fascination for many years now, which often involves also writing liner notes for reissued albums. But among the thousands of reissued albums that have arrived on my desk, only very few discharge such a surge of emotions and memories as this one. “New Hope Jazz MassFind albums with this title” has been, since the day it was originally released in 1978, one of the absolute top Jazz recordings on my list, which I kept revisiting regularly, as well as using in my lectures and writings, as a prime example of the ingenuity of European Jazz, which managed to expand the idiom into a cross-genre amalgam of myriad of influences, joining the American Jazz tradition with the Millennium-long European music tradition.
The concept of composing a Jazz Mass, which would be performed at a church, was of course a pretty revolutionary idea at the time, one that has been rarely returned to over the decades since. “Sacred Jazz” enjoyed some popularity in the 1950s and 1960s, especially in the works of Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist and later John ColtraneFind albums by this artist, although the latter was more influenced by non-Christian religious traditions. The “New Hope Jazz Mass”, dedicated to Ellington and Coltrane, was premiered at the St. Peters Lutheran Church in NY on May 18, 1978 and had its Finnish premiere at the Temppeliaukio Church (known as Church of the Rock, a sensational architectural wonder) on September 7, 1978, which was recorded and originally released as a double LP on the FinlandiaFind albums on this label label that year. But the following day, September 8, 1978, there was another performance of the Mass, which was also recorded, and this album brings that recording to light for the first time.
The music was performed by the Heikki SarmantoFind albums by this artist sextet, which included vocalist Maija HapuojaFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Paroni PaakkunainenFind albums by this artist and Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist, bassist Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist, drummer Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist and Heikki Sarmanto on piano. In addition, a vocal quartet, the Gregg Smith Vocal QuartetFind albums by this artist, and a large choir, the Long Island Symphonic Choral AssociationFind albums by this artist, performed the choir vocal parts. The Mass consists of twelve compositions, all by Heikki Sarmanto, with lyrics taken from liturgy and some written by Aina Swan CutlerFind albums by this artist. The music was recorded live, and the remastered sound quality is absolutely flawless.
The music, as already mentioned above, was absolutely revolutionary at the time, not only in its scope and complexity, but primarily in its bold expressionism, immaculate blend of American Gospel and Jazz traditions with European music structures, Finnish Folkloristic touches and European Jazz approach. Crowned by brilliant performances by all the performers, which clearly shows that “white man can jump”, despite the prejudice. Hapuoja’s wordless vocalese is some of the finest of its kind, and her angelic voice suits this music perfectly. The two saxophonist are brilliant improvisers. The rhythm section is absolutely impeccable and highly inspired, with Pekka Sarmanto’s (Heikki’s brother) bass pulsations providing the natural heartbeat to the music and Rosnell’s drumming keeping the time like a magic chronometer. Maestro Heikki Sarmanto’s piano playing is in charge of the harmonic unity, and the choir wraps everything with the Gospel elation. Perfection incarnate!
Overall, this is an absolute classic European Jazz album, in every sense, and an iconic Finish Jazz recording, which deserves to be a part of every serious Jazz collection. For those blissfully ignorant as of its existence, now after reading my words you have absolutely no excuse but to get a copy. Thanks to the JazzaggressionFind albums on this label label for releasing this Holy Grail of an album and last but not least thank you my old, old Friend Heikki for your Friendship and all that wonderful, Genius music you contributed to the world over the years!

  | JUKKA TOLONEN BAND / HURMERINTA – SORVALI BIG BAND ~ POP LIISA VOL. 09 & VOL. 10 SVART 015 ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1975 - 1977 Released: 2016
Following the breakdown of the pioneering Finnish group Tasavallan PresidenttiFind albums by this artist in 1974, guitarist / composer Jukka TolonenFind albums by this artist continued his successful solo career, releasing albums on a regular basis. By the time his band was captured playing on this live broadcast, his fourth solo album "HystericaFind albums with this title" was about to be released soon after. The band, which also included saxophonist Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Esa KotilainenFind albums by this artist, bassist Heikki VirtanenFind albums by this artist and drummer Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist, perform four instrumental pieces, all originating from the "Hysterica" album and all composed by Tolonen. These live versions of the pieces are quite different from the studio versions and therefore their inclusion here is a perfect companion to the original album.
The music is almost completely Fusion oriented, with superb soloing by all the band members. Kotilainen´s keyboard performances are probably the only strong link present here to Progressive Rock, but the Fusion elements include also some Funk influences. Considering the fact that the bad collectively comprised of the "hottest" players on the Finnish scene, the fact that all the performances here are simply stellar.
Guitarist Sami HurmerintaFind albums by this artist, his wife vocalist Maarit HurmerintaFind albums by this artist and drummer Upi SorvaliFind albums by this artist put together the Hurmerinta – Sorvali Big BandFind albums by this artist in 1977, combining forces with many musicians they performed and recorded with earlier on, such as British vocalist Frank RobsonFind albums by this artist (ex-Tasavallan Presidentti), trumpeter Esko HeikkinenFind albums by this artist, Romanian trombonist Mircea StanFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Pertti PaivinenFind albums by this artist and Pentti LahtiFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Kari KuusamoFind albums by this artist, bassist Harri MerilahtiFind albums by this artist, and second drummer Roope KoistinenFind albums by this artist. This eleven-piece Big Band was not a typical Jazz Big Band, but rather a Brass Rock ensemble with a double vocal front. The Big Band existed for about a year between 1977 and 1978 and never recorded a studio album, so this live broadcast is their only recorded legacy.
The Big Band performs six songs, three of which were written by Jimi HendrixFind albums by this artist, two by Robson and one by Sami Hurmerinta. Hendrix was an obvious influence on these musicians and the legendary album by Gil EvansFind albums by this artist and his Orchestra "Plays The Music Of Jimi HendrixFind albums with this title" prompted them to form the Big Band in the first place. The music is of course typical of Brass Rock bands of the time, which combined Rock and Jazzy horns sound.
