RICHIE COLE / EMIL VIKLICKY ~ RICHIE COLE / EMIL VIKLICKY QUINTET
MULTISONIC 310799 (Barcode: 741941079921) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2010 Released: 2011

This album presents a live recording by the US / Czech quintet comprising of Chicago based saxophonist Richie ColeFind albums by this artist, baritone saxophonist Ted HogarthFind albums by this artist and drummer Ernie AdamsFind albums by this artist and two Czech players: veteran pianist / composer Emil ViklickyFind albums by this artist and young bassist Josef FecFind albums by this artist. Together they perform nine pieces, three of which are Cole originals, one Viklicky original and five standards. Cole is mostly associated with the post-Bebop tradition, keeping alive the music initiated by the legendary Charlie ParkerFind albums by this artist. Hogarth continues the baritone saxophone tradition first developed by Gerry MulliganFind albums by this artist. Fec continues the great tradition of the Czech bass school of George MrazFind albums by this artist, Miroslav VitousFind albums by this artist and Frantisek UhlirFind albums by this artist.

Viklicky is of course well versed in the Bebop ways, as this was after all the music that he played extensively in the early days of his Jazz career. He performed with Cole in Chicago, earning respect and appreciation from the audiences there, which eventually led to this beautiful concert in Prague. The music is absolutely superb from start to finish and the performances stellar. Everybody seems to have a great time and the individual solos simply soar chasing one another. This is mainstream Jazz of the highest caliber and every connoisseur of the music will be absolutely delighted listening to this display of virtuosity and class.
Side Note
This album is a part of the “Jazz Na Hrade (Jazz At Prague Castle)” series, released by the Czech MultisonicFind albums on this label label, which presents live recordings performed at various locations inside the charming Prague Castle, now the residence of the President of the Czech Republic.

The series was initiated in 2004 by President Vaclav KlausFind albums by this artist, who often introduces the players himself on these albums, and symbolizes the respect and love of all things Cultural by the Czech People, including Jazz of course.

JAN HAMMER ~ MALINY MALINY
PROMISING MUSIC 44109 (Barcode: 602517845954) ~ CZECHOSLOVAKIA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1968 Released: 2009

1st album by Czech pianist / composer Jan HammerFind albums by this artist, who would later become one of the cornerstone musicians of US Jazz-Rock Fusion movement as a member of John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist´s Mahavishnu OrchestraFind albums by this artist, as well as leader of his own groups. This live recording at the legendary Munich Domicile club, a meeting place of German and European Jazz scene for many years, is in many ways quite accidental. Hammer and his compatriot bassist George MrazFind albums by this artist (Jiri in Czech) were in Munich "in transit" actually heading for the US to join the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where they both received a scholarship. Of course they had been warmly received in Munich and gigged extensively waiting for the US trip to finalize. While there, the Soviet Block armies invaded their homeland in the infamous 1968 abrupt end of the "Czech Spring", one of the darkest moments of the Eastern-European history. Hammer and Mraz made the decision not to look back and moved to the US permanently, joining many other famous Czech musicians who were destined to build their career there, like Miroslav VitousFind albums by this artist for example. This recording is Hammer´s debut, presenting him on acoustic piano and organ, playing a set of his original compositions in a trio format with Mraz on electric bass and resident Domicile drummer (originally from Netherlands, but mostly active in Germany) Cees SeeFind albums by this artist on drums. The most striking effect of this recording is not hearing the "early" Hammer, already a highly accomplished pianist at the time with extensive classical training, but his Jazzy approach, which in years was about to move to the background of his output, which I personally see as a great shame. The music is also very interesting, with Hammer combining many Eastern-European motifs with Jazz, like many other Eastern-European musicians did at the time, creating some of the most memorable tunes in the process (see parallel work of Polish Jazz musicians). This is definitely a great historical document of the era and one can only be grateful to Promising MusicFind albums on this label for unearthing and reissuing this lovely musical glimpse into the past. As usual, the remastering, sound quality, packaging and extensive liner notes are beyond reproach. Warmly recommended!

JAROMIR HONZAK ~ A QUESTION TO ALL YOUR ANSWERS
ANIMAL MUSIC 005 (Barcode: 8594155996551) ~ CZECH REPUBLIC ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2006 Released: 2007

This is the fourth album as a leader by Czech Jazz bassist / composer Jaromir HonzakFind albums by this artist and his first release on the excellent Czech label Animal MusicFind albums on this label. The album was recorded by a Czech / Polish quartet which also included Czech guitarist David DoruzkaFind albums by this artist and Polish pianist Michal TokajFind albums by this artist and drummer Lukasz ZytaFind albums by this artist, both of which played with him on this album´s predecessor "Present PastFind albums with this title". Clarinetist Tomas CisteckyFind albums by this artist, flautist Lucie CisteckaFind albums by this artist and pianist Vojtech ProchazkaFind albums by this artist appear as guests. The album presents eight original compositions, all by Honzak. Seven of the tracks were recorded at the excellent Studio Tokarnia and engineered by Jan SmoczynskiFind albums by this artist, with the usual superb sound quality. The last track was recorded at the Czech Radio and features the a.m. guests.

Honzak, whom I have been watching closely since many years, proudly continues the Czech Jazz Bass tradition, established by internationally known bassists like George MrazFind albums by this artist (really Jiri MrazFind albums by this artist) and Miroslav VitousFind albums by this artist, but also less known outside of their homeland like Ludek HulanFind albums by this artist, Frantisek UhlirFind albums by this artist, Karel VejvodaFind albums by this artist, Petr KorinekFind albums by this artist and others. His beautifully round notes and chronometric pulsations are always a guarantee of a perfect rhythm section anchor in the numerous recording he took part in.

But on this album Honzak great forte are his wonderful compositions, which are beautifully woven, versatile and most importantly open enough to be stretched and explored by the quartet members, often towards unexpected directions. As a result this album is a superb ride into the unforeseen, with each track taking the listener on a new adventure. Not losing the sense of melody and coherence, the music has so much freedom and breathing space that the flexibility is endless.

Of course the leader gets fantastic support from the quartet members; Doruzka, here fourteen years younger than today, is already a bright star on the European scale, while Tokaj and Zyta, despite their relatively young age at the time were already seasoned veterans, capable of playing virtually anything. Together the quartet sounds like an organic unit and in retrospect I´d love to hear this experience repeated again.

Overall this is a brilliant album from start to finish, a perfect reflection of 21st Century European Jazz at its best. Fourteen years later it still sounds perfectly fresh and sparkling with ingenuity, like a gem it is. Absolutely not to be missed!

HANS KOLLER / BIG BAND ~ NEW YORK CITY
MPS 602498134375 (Barcode: 602498134375) ~ AUSTRIA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1968 Released: 2003

Absolutely astounding jazz suite / concerto for Big Band composed by Austrian composer / saxophonist Hans KollerFind albums by this artist and recorded in 1968 (but released only in 1979). The recording was done during a visit in Germany by the brilliant Czech jazz orchestra led by Gustav BromFind albums by this artist (members of the orchestra were all top Czech jazz players, including the phenomenal bassist Jiri MrazFind albums by this artist – who would soon after emigrate to the US and become George MrazFind albums by this artist).

The orchestra was “strengthened” for the recording by adding some of the top German jazz players at the time (Emil MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist, Joki FreundFind albums by this artist and others) and the resulting lineup is simply phenomenal. Koller’s music is also outstanding - very modern, with some free elements and devilishly clever polyrhythmic structures. The entire suite has enough drama and substance to amaze even the most sophisticated listener and is years ahead of anything else in that musical domain. It is a prime example of the emergence of European jazz, which points in a new direction, continuing but also significantly altering the American jazz tradition. For any serious jazz aficionado this is a “must have” album essential for comprehension of the development of modern jazz.
Side Note
The legendary German MPSFind albums on this label (Musik Produktion Schwarzwald) label, founded by Hans Georg Brunner-SchwerFind albums by this artist (HGBS) in 1963, first as SABAFind albums on this label Records and later on from 1968 as MPS Records, was the most important independent European record label, which had an enormous contribution to the development of European Jazz. For many years MPS cooperated with the legendary German producer / author Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, my Friend and Mentor, whose visionary approach and open-mindedness brought the crème de la crème of the Jazz (in the broadest meaning of the word) musicians from all over the world to the label. Between 1963 and 1983 MPS produced about five hundred albums, many of which are among the most important Jazz recordings on this planet.

In 1983 the MPS catalog was sold to UniversalFind albums on this label, which sadly resulted in all those artistic treasures to almost disappear from the face of the earth – a situation not only tragic but culturally criminal. Universal reissued a part of the MPS albums (probably 128 titles) on CD between 1999 and 2011 under the "Most Perfect Sound Edition" moniker.

Since 2008 the German Promising MusicFind albums on this label label released some of the MPS recordings, but at a very slow pace.

In 2014 the German company Edel AG bought the MPS catalogue from Universal and released a series of 25 MPS albums on CD with a new slipcase graphic design, which brought all those excellent albums back to life. In 2015 Edel AG started to record and release new albums under the MPS moniker. In 2016 Edel AG released a series of 10 classic MPS albums on CD, which were beautifully remastered and re-packaged, presenting the original artwork and liner notes, as well as new liner notes and photographs. An obvious labor of love, these reissues are what the MPS catalogue truly deserves. This project was continued in 2017 with another series of 10 classic MPS albums released on CD. In later years some new reissues were released sporadically.

Over the years many SABA / MPS albums were reissued in Japan, which is often the only available source for these albums today, but that is a story in itself.

OLAF KUBLER & JAN HAMMER TRIO ~ TURTLES
ENJA 9512 (Barcode: 063757951223) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1968 Released: 2007

This is an archival live album by German saxophonist Olaf KublerFind albums by this artist recorded with two young (at the time) Czech Jazz musicians, who just escaped from Czechoslovakia following the Soviet Pact invasion of the country, keyboardist Jan HammerFind albums by this artist and bassist Jiri MrazFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. George MrazFind albums by this artist) and Dutch drummer Cees SeeFind albums by this artist. German drummer Michael DennertFind albums by this artist plays on two tracks. The music was recorded at the legendary Munich’s Jazz Club “The Domicile”, which was an epicenter of the German / European Jazz and a mecca for international Jazz between 1965 and 1981. The two Czech refugees lived in the musician’s rooms above the club for several months, before they emigrated to the US. The album presents ten tracks, two of which are originals by Kubler, three are originals by Mraz, one an original by Hammer and the remaining four are standards.

The music is typical modern European Jazz of the late 1960s, mostly Bebop based but featuring original compositions. Although pretty young at the time, both Czechs prove to be excellent players already, which explains their smooth and immediate integration into to top US scene, following their arrival there. The original compositions are all as strong as the standards. But of course the album is first and foremost a genuine piece of Jazz history of the turbulent, but highly interesting times. Personally it immediately strikes the fabulous memories of the many nights I had the opportunity to spend at “The Domicile”, watching the modern European Jazz during its formative years.

Considering the fact that the music was recorded at rather Spartan conditions, the sound quality / clarity is quite remarkable, and the remastering presents all the nuances of the music in perfect condition.

Overall, this is a remarkable document of the European Jazz history in one of the epicenters of its development. For people familiar with Hammer’s Fusion explorations, his acoustic piano work here should be a revelation. Mraz was already a great bassist then, and remains so to this very day. This is a great little gem, sadly often overlooked and definitely worth an honorable place in any serious record collection.

ADAM MAKOWICZ ~ A HANDFUL OF STARS
CHIAROSCURO 209 (Barcode: 091454020928) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1981 Released: 1997

This is a little known and sort of a “lost” album by Polish pianist / composer Adam MakowiczFind albums by this artist, recorded in 1981 but released only sixteen years later in 1997, for reasons aptly explained in the album’s booklet. The album was produced by the legendary John HammondFind albums by this artist, who was also responsible for the first album Makowicz recorded in the US, and features Makowicz in a relatively rare piano trio setting, with two superb instrumentalists: Czech bassist (and another émigré) George MrazFind albums by this artist and American drummer Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist. The album presents eleven tracks, which are a usual mixture of Makowicz originals (four) and Jazz standards. A twelfth (hidden) track is a spoken word track, on which Makowicz tell the story of his life and career.

The music is a brilliant display of Makowicz incredible technique and captures him shortly after his arrival in the US, when his playing was still influenced to some degree by his Polish tradition and Slavic lyricism, which almost completely disappeared in the years to come. As already mentioned, it is a rare trio setting as Makowicz definitely prefers solo piano outings.

The album is closely linked to the “From My WindowFind albums with this title” solo piano album, also recorded in 1981 the duo recording “Classic Jazz DuetsFind albums with this title” with Mraz, recorded in 1982, as well as “The Name Is MakowiczFind albums with this title” quintet recording from 1983, all of which present his work from that period.

It is no wonder that Makowicz managed to win the hearts of the American audiences and critic alike, since his treatment of the American Jazz tradition sounds completely familiar and orthodox, spiced of course with his virtuosic technique and genuine love of the music, and his original compositions are fully in the vein of American standards, many of which were composed by composers of Polish heritage, like Bronislaw KaperFind albums by this artist, Victor YoungFind albums by this artist or Henryk WarsFind albums by this artist, a fact American listeners had no clue about of course. Mraz and DeJohnette play splendidly, as expected, and the classic Jazz piano trio format proves to be unbeatable again.

Overall, this is a splendid opportunity to hear Makowicz in a trio setting and explore the early stages of his US career. The music stands the test of time splendidly and should be a delightful experience to every mainstream Jazz lover. For Polish Jazz collectors this is an absolute must, although it is not easy to find a copy these days.

ADAM MAKOWICZ ~ MY FAVORITE THINGS: THE MUSIC OF RICHARD RODGERS
CONCORD 4631 (Barcode: 4003099805620) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1993 Released: 1994

This is an album by Polish Jazz pianist / composer Adam MakowiczFind albums by this artist, recorded in a classic piano trio setting with Czech bassist George MrazFind albums by this artist and American drummer Alan DawsonFind albums by this artist. As the title suggests, the album presents eleven tracks, all of which were composed by Richard RodgersFind albums by this artist, one of the most important creators of the American Songbook.

Makowicz, who left Poland in 1977 and settled first in the US and later on in Canada, is the only representative of the Polish Jazz scene to achieve a remarkable success in America. He fully embraced the American Jazz aesthetics, concentrating on playing mainstream Jazz, which includes the treasures of the American Jazz standards as well as his own compositions, which are in similar vein.

This album presents a set of highly imaginative interpretations of familiar songs by Rodgers, which often deviate quite radically from the originals, but retain the spirit of the compositions, even when the original tempo is significantly changed. Makowicz manages to deploy his entire repertoire of virtuosic tricks of the trade, playing neck-breaking arpeggios and running up and down the keyboard with brilliantly delicate touch. He is splendidly accompanied by the rhythm section, especially closely-knit with Mraz, who is an absolute wizard, and who recorded quite a few other albums with Makowicz over the years, which of course means they communicate almost telepathically.

Overall, this is another beautiful album by Makowicz, who in fact never recorded anything below his usual top standard, which offers some challenging and interesting interpretations of familiar material, which might take even the most experienced Jazz listener by surprise. Sadly, both Mraz and Dawson are no longer with us, so this album is a splendid tribute to their talents. Makowicz is alive and kicking, recording and performing actively, to the delight of his numerous fans and followers. This is a true gem, especially to those listeners, who think there is nothing new that can be done with these standards any more.

ADAM MAKOWICZ / GEORGE MRAZ ~ CLASSIC JAZZ DUETS
GOWI 04 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1981 Released: 1991

This is a wonderful live recording of a piano / bass duo concert by the great Polish pianist Adam MakowiczFind albums by this artist and Czech bassist George MrazFind albums by this artist. These two Eastern European virtuosi moved to the US in order to establish their international careers and both were victims of the Cold War politics. Mraz arrived in the US in 1968, soon after his country was invaded by the Russian tanks in an attempt to stop the Spring of Prague. Already a seasoned player at the time he was immediately absorbed into the Jazz scene and worked with the most famous names in the business. Makowicz arrived in the US in 1977 and his amazing talent and virtuosity was soon recognized by the US public and fellow musicians. This album finds the two musicians performing a set of Jazz standards, arranged for a duo, which are truly breathtaking. The level of interplay between the two musicians is telepathic and the intricate exchanges between keys and strings are delightful. Wholeheartedly recommended!

OSCAR PETERSON ~ WALKING THE LINE
MPS 4029759113447 (Barcode: 4029759113447) ~ CANADA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2016

This is a reissue of an album by Canadian Jazz pianist / composer Oscar PetersonFind albums by this artist, which was his tenth album for MPSFind albums on this label out of the fifteen albums he recorded for the label, all produced by the legendary label´s founder Hans Georg Brunner-SchwerFind albums by this artist. The album features a trio, which includes bassist Jiri MrazFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. George MrazFind albums by this artist) and drummer Ray PriceFind albums by this artist, and performs eight tunes, one of which is an original composition by Peterson and seven are standards.

Peterson is considered as one of the greatest Jazz piano players of all times and has to this day many faithful fans all over the world. He undoubtedly was a Master musician and his technique was nothing short of brilliant, but his repertoire stayed within very constrained, mainstream oriented material, leaning towards the more entertaining side of the Jazz idiom. As such, his audiences included many music listeners beyond the strict Jazz sphere.

Although brilliantly recorded and wonderfully swinging, this music, especially in retrospect, made little impact on the development of the Jazz idiom. Peterson recorded very prolifically (over two hundred albums), but his albums sounded all quite similar to one another, and this album is no exception.

The many Peterson fans will surely love to have this album back in circulation, especially with an enhanced / remastered sound and elegant packaging.

OSCAR PETERSON / SINGERS UNLIMITED ~ IN TUNE
MPS 4029759124009 (Barcode: 4029759124009) ~ CANADA ~ Smooth Jazz

Recorded: 1971 Released: 2017

This is a reissue of an album that puts together two of the most popular recording acts of the MPSFind albums on this label label: Canadian pianist Oscar PetersonFind albums by this artist, here with Czech bassist Jiri MrazFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. George MrazFind albums by this artist) and American drummer Louis HayesFind albums by this artist, and the American vocal Jazz quartet Singers UnlimitedFind albums by this artist, led by Gene PuerlingFind albums by this artist and also including Don SheltonFind albums by this artist, Len DresslarFind albums by this artist and Bonnie HermanFind albums by this artist. Together they perform eleven popular songs and Jazz standards, with vocal arrangements by Puerling.

This was the first recording Singers Unlimited made for MPS, which led to seven years of cooperation with the label. It was Peterson who made the connection between the Singers Unlimited and the label in the first place. The album was recorded in 1971 but originally released only a couple of years later, following the phenomenal success of two albums by Singer Unlimited: "A CapellaFind albums with this title" and "ChristmasFind albums with this title".

This "two for the price of one" setting might have had a commercial appeal at the time, but artistically sounds rather pale, especially in retrospect, bordering what would now be called Smooth Jazz. Although perfectly executed, both by the trio and the vocalists, the music has little depth and adds nothing substantial neither to the classic piano trio or vocal quartet achievements in the history of the Jazz idiom.

However, there are plenty of fine moments herein, like the superb bass playing by Mraz or vocal harmonies by the quartet, which lost nothing of their charm over the years. As such the album is a delightful nostalgic trip down the memory lane, especially in view of the exquisite recording quality. Listeners who like the "cocktail party" Jazz sound should be absolutely delighted!

HEIKKI SARMANTO SERIOUS MUSIC ENSEMBLE ~ A BOSTON DATE
PORTER 4002 (Barcode: 656605854625) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2008

This is one of those albums, which immediately invoke the recurring question: "How many recordings like this one remain hidden and unreleased all over the world?" The fact that it took 38 years for this gem to surface is criminally negligent, to put it mildly, with the only solace being the proverbial better late than never. Finnish pianist / composer Heikki SarmantoFind albums by this artist has been one of my favorite musicians for the last four decades, always awe-inspiring and never disappointing. His life-time achievements indisputably deserve a book-sized biography (unfortunately not written yet) and his role as Europe´s leading Jazz personality and a prominent creator of the emancipated European Jazz is sadly little known outside of a tiny circle of connoisseurs and researches. In fact the entire Finnish music scene often appears to be the one of world´s best hidden secrets, which is amazing in view of the miraculous contribution of Finnish musicians and composers to the Pantheon of the overall human musical culture. Apparently even the most devoted music fans and critics often suffer from chronic narrow-mindedness and Xenophobia, with Americans leading the camp, with pride and remarkable consistency, over the years.

Although recorded in 1970, this session does not reflect Sarmanto´s early musical steps. He was 31 years old at the time and already a seasoned musician, with extensive Classical Music education (a graduate of the Helsinki Sibelius Music Academy - the country´s most prestigious musical education institution) and extensive Jazz experience going back almost a decade earlier as member of several Jazz ensembles active on the country´s burgeoning scene. In 1964-65 Sarmanto took part in the recording of Finland´s first modern Jazz album, the legendary "The Modern Sound Of FinlandFind albums with this title" by saxophonist / flautist Esa PethmanFind albums by this artist, and his piano playing on that album already sounds refined and focused. In 1968 Sarmanto was the first Finn to be awarded a scholarship at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, which gave him a chance to get some formal Jazz education (the Jazz department of the Sibelius Academy would be established only in the early 1980s, and of course Sarmanto would be appointed its first department head).

Sarmanto used his time in Boston not only to expand his formal Jazz horizons, but also to mingle and play as much as he could on the local Jazz scene, which was quite active at the time. The Berklee students and the local musicians often gigged together and soon enough ensembles were formed. Following a brief home visit in 1969, during which Sarmanto recorded his first album as a leader, a live sextet recording released as "Flowers In The WaterFind albums with this title" (on which Pethman is also featured), he returned to Boston to "wrap up" his Berklee affairs. During that period he formed the quintet, quite accidently, which is often the best way for things to happen, which is featured on this semi-professional recording. The quintet consists of Sarmanto on piano, another Finnish giant, saxophonist / flautist Juhani AaltonenFind albums by this artist, who followed Sarmanto to Berklee but lasted only one semester (without a grant the finances were just against all odds), Czech bassists George MrazFind albums by this artist, who also arrived in Boston on a Berklee grant (together with compatriot pianist Jan HammerFind albums by this artist), escaping the brutal Warsaw Pact forces invasion of their homeland, following the brief "Spring of Prague" in 1969, the first major crack in the Berlin Wall. The remaining two musicians were guitarist Lance GundersonFind albums by this artist and drummer Craig HerndonFind albums by this artist, both Bostonians at the time. The quintet was nicknamed, half-jokingly, The Serious Music EnsembleFind albums by this artist, a name which would stick to several Sarmanto´s groups in the future, featuring the core of this quintet.

The three Europeans and two Americans obviously had no difficulty in communicating musically, and it´s hardly surprising that they chose to play mostly Free Form, for several reasons. The air was still reverberating with the sounds of Albert AylerFind albums by this artist, Eric DolphyFind albums by this artist and John ColtraneFind albums by this artist, with the US Free Jazz scene at its peak by the end of the 1960s (unfortunately soon to be almost completely neglected, passing the torch to the Europeans). The limited, if any, rehearsal time the ensemble had before entering the studio, obviously left most of the content to be developed at the spur of the moment, making collective improvisation the only logical path to follow. And perhaps the youthful spirit of rebellion had also something to do with it, considering Berklee´s extreme conservatism, which is legendary even today. Aaltonen, the oldest and most experienced musician on board, already had extensive Free Jazz practice, after playing with Finnish pioneers of the genre, most notably with drummer Edward VesalaFind albums by this artist, and his contributions are the most consistent, with remarkable power of expression, intensity and technical brilliance rivaling the Masters of the genre.

The six pieces played during the session, all composed by Sarmanto, are performed in one continuous flow with no gaps between them. Typically, after a briefly stated theme, the musicians enter a series of exchanges, with one, two or even three players soloing simultaneously, with the rhythm section frequently changing the tempo. Most of the material is up-tempo, except for the beautiful ballad, which ends the set (dedicated to Margareth ChaloffFind albums by this artist, the legendary piano teacher), which is the gentlest and most structured piece on the album, featuring the exquisite bass work by Mraz and more typical of Sarmanto´s future output. In many respects the session is quite typical European Free Jazz, resembling many similar musical encounters happening in Europe at the time, especially in the UK, but also in Poland, Germany and the Netherlands. It is quite distinctly different from American Free Jazz, which demonstrates rawer and more spontaneous approach but lacks the European Classical Music background, which is deeply implanted in the minds of European musicians, evident even in the most extreme Improvised Music experiments. In many respects, this session is probably one of the most "European sounding" recordings ever captured at a US studio.

It is really interesting to compare this session with the material recorded by the almost identical quintet (exchange Mraz with Heikki´s brother bassist Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist) just a few months later and released as Sarmanto´s second (first studio) album "CounterbalanceFind albums with this title" (also reissued on PorterFind albums on this label Records). With Aaltonen playing exclusively flute and Sarmanto switching to Fender Rhodes, this seems to be a completely different group, even if still pretty much in the Free vain. The European influence simply becomes overwhelming, changing the music dramatically. Even if the sound quality of this recording is not up to modern digital standards (the recording was most probably not intended to be commercially released), the musical content and the immense historical importance of this session make it an indispensible document of the highest value.

Kudos to Luke MoslingFind albums by this artist, the brave owner of Porter Records, for releasing this treasure and making it available to us, the music lovers, and saving a lost gem from extinction. Sarmanto´s followers worldwide will be obviously delighted to hear this, as should be every connoisseur of good music, especially those who follow the emergence of the modern European Jazz. Brilliant stuff!

HEIKKI SARMANTO ~ COUNTERBALANCE
PORTER 1506 (Barcode: 656605863825) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1971 Released: 2008

This is the second album by Finnish pianist / composer Heikki SarmantoFind albums by this artist, recorded soon after his return from Boston, where he attended the Berklee College of Music – the first Finnish musician to do so. The core of the quintet, which recorded this album, was established in Boston, and recorded a semi-formal session there, released only 38 years later as "A Boston DateFind albums with this title" on the PorterFind albums on this label label. With three Finnish musicians: Sarmanto on Fender Rhodes, flautist Juhani AaltonenFind albums by this artist and bassist Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist (Heikki´s brother and life-long collaborator), and two Americans: guitarist Lance GundersonFind albums by this artist and drummer Craig HerndonFind albums by this artist (Pekka replaced George MrazFind albums by this artist, who played on the Boston session, recorded just few months earlier), this quintet continues the explorations originated in their first encounter, but this time the approach is quite different.

Whereas the Boston session was almost completely spontaneous and unplanned, exploring the realm of Free Jazz collective improvisation, this recording session is obviously well planned and therefore much more organized. Although there is plenty of great improvisations here and even some Free Form, the melodic content is clearly stated and well developed, with an overall atmosphere of typical Nordic tranquility and serenity in the air. Sarmanto´s switch to the Fender Rhodes and Aaltonen using the flute exclusively have a deep impact on the album´s overall sound and ambiance, which are predominantly relaxed and deeply reflective. The worldwide explosion of Fusion, which happened in the early 1970s and which affected the Finnish scene as much as any other musical scene in the world can be heard here as well, with Sarmanto / Aaltonen interplays resembling the Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist / Joe FarrellFind albums by this artist dialogs on the early Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist albums.

But above all, the music, composed almost entirely by Sarmanto (with Gunderson contributing one composition), is a sublime example of European Jazz at its peak, combining the elements of Jazz tradition with harmonies from the European Classical Music and heritage from European ethnic music. The Scandinavian Jazz musicians and composers, and Finnish ones in particular, were amongst the pioneers of Jazz-World Fusion, and many of their creations were deeply rooted in local folklore. Aaltonen´s beautiful flute lines are full of clever innuendos to Finnish (but not only) folklore, as are many of Sarmanto´s piano lines. Pekka´s excellent bass playing is a clear evidence of his extraordinary talent and ability, which can be heard on countless Finnish Jazz albums over the years. Herndon provides a great rhythmic drive to the music and Gunderson solos and interacts with the other members of the quintet almost telepathically.

Overall this a beautifully played and well constructed piece of music, which one tends to remember fondly for a very long period of time – I know I did, as I never forgot this album since hearing it for the first time some 37 years ago. For people who never heard it before, this is a wonderful opportunity to discover a masterpiece of European Jazz, which has been unavailable for decades and only now reissued on CD for the first time. Don´t even think twice!

HEIKKI SARMANTO ~ EVERYTHING IS IT
PORTER 1514 (Barcode: 656605789521) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 1972 Released: 2011

"Everything Is ItFind albums with this title", recorded on September 13 & 14, 1972, was the fourth album released by Finnish pianist / composer Heikki SarmantoFind albums by this artist. Born June 22, 1939 Sarmanto was considered already a "veteran" of the modern Finnish Jazz scene at the time. A graduate of the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Sarmanto contributed his talents to multiple local ensembles active on the burgeoning Finnish Capital´s Jazz club scene and participated in several landmark recordings in the 1960s. His earliest recordings (1962) were with saxophonist / flautist Esa PethmanFind albums by this artist as a regular member of his group, culminating with the recording of "The Modern Sound Of FinlandFind albums with this title" (1964), which is considered as the first completely original modern Finnish Jazz album. In the following year Sarmanto recorded the album "For Friends And RelativesFind albums with this title" (1965) as a member of the Christian Schwindt – Otto DonnerFind albums by this artist quintet, also considered as an early milestone of Finnish Jazz.

In 1968 Sarmanto was the first Finn to be awarded a scholarship at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, which gave him a chance to get some formal Jazz education (the Jazz department of the Sibelius Academy would be established only in 1983, and of course Sarmanto would be appointed its first department head). Sarmanto used his time in Boston not only to expand his formal Jazz horizons, but also to mingle and play as much as he could on the local Jazz scene, which was quite active at the time. The Berklee students and the local musicians often gigged together and soon enough ensembles were formed.

Following a brief home visit in 1969, during which Sarmanto recorded his first album as a leader, a live sextet recording released as "Flowers In The WaterFind albums with this title" (recorded July 8, 1969) he returned to Boston to "wrap up" his Berklee affairs. During that period he formed a quintet, quite accidently, which is often the best way for things to happen, which played mostly Free Jazz based on the heritage of Albert AylerFind albums by this artist, Eric DolphyFind albums by this artist and John ColtraneFind albums by this artist. The quintet recorded a session at a local studio, which was formally released on CD only 38 years later as "A Boston DateFind albums with this title" (recorded September 18, 1970, released 2008) on PorterFind albums on this label Records. The quintet consisted of Sarmanto on piano, another Finnish Giant, saxophonist / flautist Juhani AaltonenFind albums by this artist, who followed Sarmanto to Berklee but lasted only one semester (without a grant the finances were just against all odds), Czech bassists George MrazFind albums by this artist, who also arrived in Boston on a Berklee grant (together with compatriot pianist Jan HammerFind albums by this artist), escaping the brutal Warsaw Pact forces invasion of their homeland, following the brief "Spring of Prague" in 1969, the first major crack in the Berlin Wall. The remaining two musicians were guitarist Lance GundersonFind albums by this artist and drummer Craig HerndonFind albums by this artist, both Bostonians at the time. The quintet was nicknamed, half-jokingly, The Serious Music EnsembleFind albums by this artist, a name which would stick to several Sarmanto´s groups in the future, which featured the core of this quintet.

Following his graduation from Berklee Sarmanto returned to Finland, with Gunderson and Herndon following suit (they both decided to live in Finland for a while). Since Mraz opted to stay in the US and Aaltonen already returned to Finland earlier, Sarmanto had four members of his quintet in place. Mraz was replaced by Sarmanto´s brother, bassist Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist, and this new lineup recorded Sarmanto´s second (first studio) album "CounterbalanceFind albums with this title" (recorded June 8, 1971 - also reissued on Porter Records). A remarkable album, which features Aaltonen playing flute exclusively and Sarmanto switching to Fender Rhodes, and seems to be recorded by a completely different group, even if still pretty much in the Free Jazz vain. The European influence simply becomes overwhelming, changing the music dramatically.

Recorded just three months after "Counterbalance", "Like A FragonardFind albums with this title" (recorded September 14, 1971), the third album by Sarmanto, was the first giant step in Sarmanto´s exceptional musical journey. In contrast to his earlier recordings, which consisted of separate and unrelated musical themes, this is the first time Sarmanto, the composer, undertakes the task of producing a concept album, which consists of a series of compositions connected by one common idea. The result becomes a Jazz Mass, a novel idea, which Sarmanto will pursue again in the future with the extraordinary "New Hope Jazz MassFind albums with this title" (1979).

"Everything Is It", which followed a year later, was another giant step in the same direction, but on a grander scale in every direction. The ensemble is expanded into a Big Band; the music includes a fully developed suite in four parts, which lasts for over 28 minutes and two additional pieces, both lengthy as well (7 and 11 minutes); the scope of the compositions now amalgamates elements of Jazz, Folklore and Classical music.

In retrospect Sarmanto´s audacity and vision are truly prophetic, since such attempts to create cross-genre music would become commonplace only decades later. The Big Band assembled for this recording is a bona fide Who´s Who of Finnish Jazz at the time and includes the finest soloists, many of which were leaders of their own ensembles. Consisting of three trumpets, two trombones, six saxophones, piano, bass and two drummers (another bold decision by Sarmanto) the Big Band enables the composer a much wider scope of tonal expression, which of course he takes full advantage of. The vocal parts, or the libretto (in English), written by Diana GlassFind albums by this artist, is performed by a young and promising soprano from the Opera of Helsinki – Taru ValjakkaFind albums by this artist. The level of musicianship and individual improvisation is absolutely brilliant and is great evidence of how talented these musicians were. Considering the fact that this complex and challenging music was recorded in just two days emphasizes this fact as well.

This is European Jazz at its best, taking the essence of the Jazz spirit and combining it flawlessly with other musical sources to create a perfect amalgam. It remains untouched by the tides of time, a classic. Thanks to Porter Records for making this musical treasure available again!

SHQ ~ [S+H]Q + FRIENDS
INDIES HAPPY TRAILS 731 (Barcode: 8595026673120) ~ CZECH REPUBLIC ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1964 - 1965 Released: 2016

This is the fourth of a series of eight reissue / archival albums presenting the recorded legacy of one of the Godfathers of Czechoslovak modern Jazz, vibraphonist / pianist / saxophonist / composer / bandleader Karel VelebnyFind albums by this artist and his SHQFind albums by this artist ensemble. All the music is beautifully remastered and the album comes with extensive liner notes, extremely well researched and full of discographical information, sadly only in Czech language (which works fine for me, but probably less so for other enthusiasts who also might be interested).

This album presents material captured during three recording sessions from November 1964. The eight tracks that were recorded during these sessions were released as the second SHQ LP, shortly after the release of the debut.

The SHQ lineup on these sessions included the basic quintet with Velebny, who played vibraphone and piano, tenor / baritone saxophonist / flautist Jan KonopasekFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Laco DecziFind albums by this artist, bassist Jan ArnetFind albums by this artist and drummer Laco TroppFind albums by this artist, which was extended by a plethora of other musicians to form lineups varying from a septet to a thirteen piece band, which included: guitarist Rudolf DasekFind albums by this artist, trombonist Zdenek PulecFind albums by this artist, bassist Jiri MrazFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. George MrazFind albums by this artist), East German (at the time) pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and many others.

The bonus tracks include three rare recording from 1965 of a short-lived SHQ quartet lineup comprising of Velebny, Dasek, Mraz and drummer Milan MadarFind albums by this artist and one track recorded in 1964 by the quintet lineup above, all released on a Various Artist compilation LP or a SHQ compilation LP.

The music, similarly to the debut album, includes mostly American standards, with just two original compositions (one each by Dasek and Velebny), but this time the large ensemble arrangements take the music quite away from its Bebop origins, and shows more sophisticated approach to orchestration and harmonic structures, bringing back the music to its European base. The bonus tracks are in contrast mostly original and point towards future development of the SHQ identity.

As expected the performances are phenomenal and with the presence of the formidable guests the music shows a much wider scope of local Czechoslovak talent and beyond. In retrospect the list of the names is a sad indication of the tragic fate of Czechoslovak Jazz, which resulted in many of its finest musicians fleeing their homeland. For example both Konopasek and Mraz fled to US, Kuhn fled to West Germany to join his older brother Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist and additional famous Czech musicians like Miroslav VitousFind albums by this artist, Jan HammerFind albums by this artist and others did the same, before the "Velvet Revolution" finally freed Czechoslovakia from the Socialist shackles.

For fans of European Jazz and its history, the entire series is an absolute must, and the fact that most of this music is available on CD for the first time makes it an absolute treasure. Absolutely brilliant!

My personal thanks to Jaromir KratochvilFind albums by this artist, the owner of Indies Happy TrailsFind albums on this label, for his friendship and the incredible job he is doing to keep this music alive!
Side Note
Since the 1950s Czechoslovakia had a highly developed Jazz scene, certainly in proportion to its population, which included many successful ensembles and even Big Bands, as well as Jazz clubs, festivals and publications, all this in spite of state censorship and political limitations. The similar situation existed since the 1960s as far as Rock (including Progressive Rock and Jazz-Rock Fusion) was concerned, resulting in many excellent, interesting and innovative ensembles.

The music was relatively well documented by the three state owned record labels: SupraphonFind albums on this label (founded in 1927), PantonFind albums on this label (founded in 1968) and OpusFind albums on this label (founded in 1971 and based in Bratislava, created on the base of Slovak division of Supraphon). Following the "Velvet Revolution" in 1989, the state owned record labels were privatized, with Supraphon dominating the local market.

However, Supraphon was quite reluctant as far as exploring its vast back catalogue is concerned, and this is where the small independent Indies Happy TrailsFind albums on this label Records, a reissue label dedicated to the preservation of the recorded legacy of Czechoslovak music, owned and run by the devoted enthusiast / historian Jaromir KratochvilFind albums by this artist, founded in 2007, comes in. Over the years the label released a plethora of brilliant music, reissuing long deleted LPs and extensively exploring the archives in search of bonus material.

The quest of Indies Happy Trails is similar to what the GADFind albums on this label Records label, run by Michal WilczynskiFind albums by this artist, is doing for Polish music, with similar consistency and praiseworthy dedication.

FRANTISEK UHLIR ~ DOUBLE BASS SESSION
MULTISONIC 310737 (Barcode: 741941073721) ~ CZECH REPUBLIC ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2008 Released: 2009

This album presents a live recording by a one time octet led by the great veteran Czech bassist Frantisek UhlirFind albums by this artist, which includes five double bass players playing simultaneously, definitely a completely innovative concept. Apart from Uhlir, who has been the country´s modern jazz pillar for several decades, the other bassist include the veteran German bassist Ali HaurandFind albums by this artist, known for his involvement on the European Jazz scene both in the mainstream and more experimental directions, and three younger Czech bassists: Peter DvorskyFind albums by this artist, Vit SvecFind albums by this artist and Tomas BarosFind albums by this artist. Saxophonist David VrobelFind albums by this artist, guitarist Adam TvrdyFind albums by this artist and drummer Jan LinhartFind albums by this artist are the remaining octet members. The octet performs seven pieces, four of which were composed by Uhlir, one by Haurand and the remaining two are standards, including the wonderful "Rosemary´s Baby" by legendary Polish composer Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artist.

Obviously the bass is the center of attention here, with many superb solos and ensemble performances. Uhlir manages to arrange the music in such a way that each bass performance can be heard perfectly clearly, which is quite difficult. It will take some effort from a less experienced listener to follow five basses simultaneously, in addition to the other three instruments, but the effort is definitely worth it. In addition to being a great tribute to the bass, this album also presents the next generation of Czech bass players, who follow in the footsteps of their great predecessors, like Uhlir, George MrazFind albums by this artist (originally Jiri Mraz) and Miroslav VitousFind albums by this artist.

There is so much love, care and intelligent playing here, that every Jazz connoisseur, and of course double bass aficionados in particular, should be delighted with the music herein. Hats off to Uhlir for putting this project together and of course a big thank you. Warmly recommended!

MULTISONIC 310822 (Barcode: 741941082228) ~ CZECH REPUBLIC ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2010 Released: 2011

This album presents the concert organized to celebrate the sixtieth birthday of the great Czech bassist / composer Frantisek UhlirFind albums by this artist, who is one of the pillars of the local Jazz scene. The band constitutes of excellent players from different countries, creating a first-class nonet, which performs ten pieces, six of which are Uhlir’s original compositions, two are composed by other band members and the remaining two are standards.

The music and the performances are highly spirited and excellent from start to finish, with extended solo spots and great interplay between the participants. Stylistically this is modern mainstream Jazz, which relies on the skills of the musicians and the strength of the compositions to keep things interesting, rather than flashy exhibitionism. Uhlir, as usual, keeps the music swinging and in check, like a chronometer, with his beautiful tone and imaginative solos highlighting the evening.

Overall, this is an ample tribute to his immense talent and continuous contribution to the Czech and European Jazz heritage. He joins the proud ranks of his colleagues George MrazFind albums by this artist and Miroslav VitousFind albums by this artist as a representative of the great Czech bass school, which is universally acknowledged as exceptional. Great fun!

GROVER WASHINGTON, JR. ~ THE COMPLETE COLUMBIA ALBUMS COLLECTION
SONY 886979244825 (Barcode: 886979244825) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1985 - 1999 Released: 2011

This Box Set includes all the albums released by US saxophonist / composer Grover Washington, Jr.Find albums by this artist on the ColumbiaFind albums on this label label, which spanned the last decade and a half of his life, untimely cut short by his tragic and unexpected death. Washington, primarily known as the Godfather of Smooth Jazz was in fact a gifted Jazz musician with a career spanning almost forty years, which slowly shifted from mainstream Jazz towards Jazz-Funk and Soul-Jazz. He enjoyed immense popularity amongst non-Jazz music lovers, but his true Jazz spirit was always a part of his milieu, especially when examined in retrospect.

The Columbia recordings present a wide range of stylistically diverse settings, moving between Funk, Soul-Jazz and mainstream Jazz, which is rarely associated with his legacy. Some superb players took part in these recordings, such as trumpeter Eddie HendersonFind albums by this artist, pianists Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist and Hank JonesFind albums by this artist, bassists Ron CarterFind albums by this artist and George MrazFind albums by this artist, drummer Billy HartFind albums by this artist and many, many more. Washington plays alto, tenor and soprano saxophones with mastery skill and fluency and his improvisational abilities are beyond reproach.

Of course many hardcore Jazz listeners will find this music way to "easy going" for their ears, but many will also be surprised by the Artistry Washington presents often on these albums. Listeners, who like the easier side of Jazz, should find this stuff absolutely delightful. Whatever one´s opinion of Washington´s music may be, one must admit that he certainly was one of the most influential musicians in the 1980s and 1990s. This Box Set, with the original albums mini-sleeved and an informational liner notes included is definitely worth investigating.
