  | SPIRIT ~ SON OF SPIRIT / FARTHER ALONG BGO 0644 (Barcode: 5017261206442) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1975 - 1976 Released: 2004
This is a reissue of two albums by the seminal American Rock group SpiritFind albums by this artist. Those are the second and third albums released by the MercuryFind albums on this label Records label, following the five albums the group released on OdeFind albums on this label and EpicFind albums on this label labels.
"Son Of SpiritFind albums with this title" was mostly a collection of ten songs recorded during the sessions held in early 1975. These sessions, produced such an abundance of material that it did not fit on the 2LP album "Spirit of `76", which was its predecessor, and was used to create this follow up album.
The music was recorded by guitarist / composer Randy CaliforniaFind albums by this artist, who wrote almost all the songs and played most of the instruments, assisted only by Ed CassidyFind albums by this artist on drums. It emphasized California´s superb songwriting and spectacular guitar playing, often compared to that of Jimi HendrixFind albums by this artist.
The album is a masterpiece of late Psychedelic Rock. California used novel (at the time) studio techniques and completely unprecedented use of multi-layered sound effects and other studio paraphernalia. It still sounds absolutely innovative today, well over four decades later.
"Farther AlongFind albums with this title" was recorded by an almost reunited lineup of Spirit, which included apart from California and Cassidy also original members, John LockeFind albums by this artist on keyboards and Mark AndesFind albums by this artist on vocals and bass (missing only Jay FergusonFind albums by this artist from the original lineup), with Matt AndesFind albums by this artist on vocals and guitar, as well as a bunch of guest musicians. Orchestral arrangements including horn and string sections were also used on some of the songs.
The material includes twelve songs, all but one new with just one remake of an old song. As usual all the songs are originals, mostly by California or co-composed by the group members. The overall sound and atmosphere are a return to the classic Spirit albums from the first period and offers some of the best American Rock even created, and these fine musicians performing together are simply unbeatable.
Overall this is Classic Rock stuff that nobody makes today, hence an absolute must to any serious Rock fan and record collector!

  | SPIRIT ~ FUTURE GAMES / SPIRIT OF 84 BGO 0657 (Barcode: 5017261206572) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1976 - 1984 Released: 2005
This is a reissue of two albums by the seminal American Rock group SpiritFind albums by this artist. Those are the last two of the five albums released by the MercuryFind albums on this label Records label, following the five albums the group released on OdeFind albums on this label and EpicFind albums on this label labels. The albums are separated by seven years of hiatus, which characterized most of the late years if the group´s career.
In between these two albums Spirit released the "The Adventures Of Kaptain Kopter & Commander Cassidy In Potato LandFind albums with this title" album in 1981, which included material recorded in 1972 and 1973 and was partly re-recorded in 1981.
"Future GamesFind albums with this title", originally released in 1977, was practically a solo album by guitarist / composer Randy CaliforniaFind albums by this artist, who wrote almost all the songs and played most of the instruments, assisted only by Ed CassidyFind albums by this artist on drums and a few unspecified guests. It emphasized California´s superb songwriting and spectacular guitar playing, often compared to that of Jimi HendrixFind albums by this artist, who is given a tribute by including the Bob DylanFind albums by this artist´s "All Along The Watchtower" all time classic associated with the Godly version performed by Hendrix.
The album is a masterpiece of late Psychedelic Rock, presenting twenty-two short songs creating a fascinating Sci-Fi like story. California used novel (at the time) studio techniques and completely unprecedented use of multi-layered sound effects and other studio paraphernalia. It still sounds absolutely innovative today, well over four decades later.
"Spirit Of 84Find albums with this title", released as "The Thirteenth DreamFind albums with this title" outside of the US, was recorded by a reunited lineup of Spirit, which included apart from California and Cassidy also original members Jay FergusonFind albums by this artist on vocals and guitar, John LockeFind albums by this artist on keyboards and Mark AndesFind albums by this artist on vocals and bass, as well as a bunch of guest musicians. The original lineup was reunited for the first time since the recording of the classic "Twelve Dreams Of Dr. SardonicusFind albums with this title" album in 1970 (hence the title).
The material includes several remakes of old songs from the first four albums by the group as well as a few new songs, recorded "live in the studio". Although obviously opportunistic / nostalgia based, this is still some of the best American Rock even created, and these fine musician performing together are simply unbeatable.
Overall this is Classic Rock stuff that nobody makes today, hence an absolute must to any serious Rock fan and record collector!

  | CHASE ~ CHASE / ENNEA / PURE MUSIC BGO 842 (Barcode: 5017261208422) ~ USA ~ Brass Rock Recorded: 1971 - 1973 Released: 2008
The US Jazz-Rock Fusion ensemble ChaseFind albums by this artist is perhaps the least known among its contemporaries like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, ChicagoFind albums by this artist or even FlockFind albums by this artist, but I personally loved them very much and kept them in my memories all these years. It is therefore a joyful occasion to see their complete recording legacy being reissued and available again.
Led by brilliant trumpeter Bill ChaseFind albums by this artist, who came to fame as the lead trumpet in Woody HermanFind albums by this artist´s HerdFind albums by this artist, known to deliver some of the strongest high notes ever played on this instrument, and who also played with other orchestras led by such famous leaders like Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist and Stan KentonFind albums by this artist. By the late 1960s Bill Chase became somewhat bored by playing Big Band scores and decided to plunge full steam ahead into the invigorating world of Jazz-Rock Fusion. He collected a group of young but highly experienced young players, who shared his vision, creating the nine-piece band Chase.
Signed with EpicFind albums on this label, the band recorded 3 brilliant albums, included here, before Bill Chase and three other members of the band tragically perished in a plane crash, putting an end to one of the most promising bands of the time. Chase included a four-trumpet front line, backed by a rocky rhythm section (keyboards, guitar, bass & drums) and a lead singer (Terry RichardsFind albums by this artist, who has a voice quite similar to David Clayton-ThomasFind albums by this artist). This unique lineup brings together the better of the two worlds – Jazz and Rock – creating a superb mixture, which only very few contenders seemed to possess. Most of the material is composed by Bill Chase, with a few classic songs getting a fresh arrangement.
All three albums are equally brilliant, with the last one being the most mature and richly orchestrated, with expanded improvised solos and mostly instrumental. Bill Chase delivers several of his high-pitched solos, which leave the listener completely breathless. All in all listening to these albums in a row is an exhilarating experience, hitting right where it counts! This music aged extremely well and today, some 35 years after it was recorded, is still some of the best stuff you can let into your ears – absolutely essential!

  | SLY & THE FAMILY STONE ~ SMALL TALK (LIMITED DELUXE EDITION) EPIC 04540 (Barcode: 886970454025) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1974 Released: 2007
7th and last album by this seminal group. Although Sly released a few later recordings under his own name and the group’s moniker, none of those would resemble the glory days of the first seven classic albums with the original band. This album is a much calmer and settled down affair than its two predecessors, with optimism and hope again on the horizon. Marriage and parenthood induced some new hope, but alas for just a short while, as he was to sink deeper and deeper into drug addiction, which eventually destroyed his career. Since the mid-1990s he completely disappeared from the public eye. Although less groundbreaking and revolutionary that all the previous albums, this one closes the circle gracefully, making the entire classic seven albums chapter one of the most fascinating ones in American music history. This beautiful new edition includes splendid liner notes and ultra-rare bonus tracks.

  | MUDDY WATERS / JOHNNY WINTER / JAMES COTTON ~ BREAKIN` IT UP, BREAKIN` IT DOWN EPIC 07283 (Barcode: 886970728324) ~ USA ~ Blues Recorded: 1977 Released: 2007
This wonderful, never before released live recording documents the tour, which was organized in support of the comeback Grammy Award winning Muddy Waters’ album Hard AgainFind albums with this title. It features the same musicians that participated in the recording of the album and puts the three blues Giants together on one stage. They all do what they know best: Muddy WatersFind albums by this artist plays guitar and sings with a great voice, Johnny WinterFind albums by this artist plays some wonderful solos and sings and James CottonFind albums by this artist plays his harmonica and sings. The vocals are divided more or less equally between the three of them, which of course is great as we get to hear them all, each at his best. The supporting band is also excellent and includes some of the best veteran musicians: Bob MargolinFind albums by this artist (guitar), Pinetop PerkinsFind albums by this artist (piano), Willie SmithFind albums by this artist (drums) and Charles CalmeseFind albums by this artist (bass). This is superb electric blues, as raw, authentic and enjoyable as it ever gets. I can’t think of a blues fan, which would like to miss this album in his collection. Warmly recommended!

  | KANSAS ~ TWO FOR THE SHOW EPIC 466842 ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock
6th album from 1978 and the first live album following a string of 5 immensly successful studio albums. Originally a double LP here on 1 CD (unfortunately less 1 track). It presents the group in full power mode, playing much extended versions of their album tunes, with much space for individual soloists to show off, as usual on live recordings. They prove anything they can do in the studion they can do better on stage.

  | STANLEY CLARKE ~ JOURNEY TO LOVE EPIC 468221 (Barcode: 5099746822125) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1975
3rd album by one of the most important Jazz / Fusion players / composers Stanley ClarkeFind albums by this artist. A brilliant instrumentalist on both the acoustic and electric basses, Clark first came to the attention of Fusion fans as a member of Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist’s Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist, where he played some of the most innovative bass parts of the genre. His ability to switch between the acoustic and electric bass and his incredible musicality and sense of rhythm made him the world’s leader on his instrument, to be surpassed later only by the mighty Jaco PastoriusFind albums by this artist (please note Clarke plays fretted bass guitar and Pastorius fretless bass guitar, which are quite different in many ways). This album is considered his best release ever. With a stellar cast including Chick Corea, John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist, Jeff BeckFind albums by this artist, Lenny WhiteFind albums by this artist, George DukeFind albums by this artist, Steve GaddFind albums by this artist and David SanciousFind albums by this artist, Clarke presents a series of brilliant compositions, each one in a different style and instrumentation. The absolute highlight of the album is the acoustic trio (with Corea and McLaughlin) dedicated to John Coltrane. Also the “Concerto For Jazz / Rock Orchestra”, performed with a brass section, is an amazing piece of classic Fusion. This is an absolute must for any Fusion / good music fan.

  | SPIRIT ~ THE FAMILY THAT PLAYS TOGETHER EPIC 485174 ~ USA ~ Classic Rock
2nd album from 1968. This one includes the hit `I Got A Line On You` and a fantastic collection of well crafted songs. The group found their own sound and direction and continues to produce superb material with no exceptions. Especially interesting is the song `Jewish`, which is based on a traditional Hebrew song. Never a dull moment!

  | SPIRIT ~ SPIRIT EPIC 485175 ~ USA ~ Classic Rock
1st album from 1968 by this brilliant US Psychedelic band that defined the sound of American Rock in the `70. Mixing elements of Rock, Jazz, Blues and Country with heavily spiced Psychedelic influence, they created some of the most distinctive and ambitious tunes in Rock. They did have a fair success on the charts as well and this album includes their first hit `Fresh-Garbage`. Classic!

  | KANSAS ~ MASQUE EPIC 502480 ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock
3rd album from 1975 by this US Prog group. By the time this album was released, Kansas already established a leading role on the US Prog scene. The album includes a stream of great compositions by the leader/guitarist/keyboardist Kerry Livgren, who has a lyrical tendency with some darkish streaks. The usage of violin creates a distinctive sound to be Kansas` trademark. This stands the tides of time beautifully.

4th album. This time SpiritFind albums by this artist decided to produce a `concept album` and the resulting epic work became one of the classic albums of all times. Strongest songwriting to date and exquisit playing mark this milestone recording as one of the best ever Rock albums. More psychedelic influenced then previous 3 albums. An absolute classic!

  | STANLEY CLARKE ~ LIVE AT THE GREEK EPIC 5099747660221 (Barcode: 5099747660221) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rap Fusion Recorded: 1993 Released: 1994
This is a live album by American bassist / composer / bandleader Stanley ClarkeFind albums by this artist, recorded in a quintet setting with guitarist Larry CarltonFind albums by this artist, drummer Billy CobhamFind albums by this artist, saxophonist / flautist Jerome Najee RasheedFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. NajeeFind albums by this artist) and keyboardist Deron JohnsonFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven tracks, one each composed by Clarke, Cobham, Carlton and Najee and three standards.
The music is a mixture of Jazz-Rock Fusion and Smooth Jazz, with plenty of space for all these professional musicians to show their chops. Although well played, it is completely expected, predictable and unoriginal, which sadly is often representative of American Jazz in general.
Despite my deep respect and admiration for Clarke, Cobham and Carlton, who produced some truly innovative music in the 1970s, which expanded the Fusion idiom and produced some classic recordings at the time, records like this one are simply disrespectful to their legendary status. But by the 1990s corporate music industry and commercialism already ruled the American music scene completely, so anything could happen.
Overall, this is a completely uneventful recording by great musicians, who should have known better… There are some brilliant moments herein, of course, but those only emphasize the general sad state of affairs.

Recorded just a few months (July 1970) before the legendary Fillmore gig, this is the Allman Brothers BandFind albums by this artist at the peak of their powers, playing their hearts out. Amazingly these two sets remained unreleased for such a long time, as in retrospect they rival the legendary Fillmore recordings both in sound and material quality. As a bonus, the almost half hour long Mountain Jam features a third guitarist - one Johnny WinterFind albums by this artist - which turnes this piece into an anthem of 1970`s guitar rock at its best. Absolutely essential not only for Allmans` fans, but in memoriam of the great times that are gone forever!

2nd album from 1975. This is definitely the most Proggy of all theit albums, with orchestral arrangements and long instrumental passages, as expected from a `true` Prog group. The material is exceptionally strong and the playing soaring and inspired. Add the unusual time signatures and twists and you get one hot album. This is a prime example of the US Prog in the 1970s and a timeless classic.

  | JACO PASTORIUS ~ JACO PASTORIUS EPIC 64977 ~ USA ~ Jazz Recorded: 1976
1st album and one of the most revolutionary and influential Jazz debuts of all time. It takes about 10 seconds into the first track to understand that the role of the bass as an instrument and perhaps the entire Jazz idiom will not stay the same after this music hits the ears of the listeners. But it is not only the virtuosity of Jaco PastoriusFind albums by this artist as a player and his Promethean approach to playing the instrument, but also his skills as a composer and arranger, all these at the age of 25, that make this album and the man so unique. Pastorius presents here a widely diverse set of compositions, ranging in style from Soul / Rock to Classical, all perfectly crafted and surprisingly mature. A long list of superb Jazz players (Wayne ShorterFind albums by this artist, Michael BreckerFind albums by this artist, Don AliasFind albums by this artist and Hubert LawsFind albums by this artist to mention but a few) and classical string players were involved in making of this album, but the most sympathetic and supportive role was played by pianist Herbie Hancock, who is the main soloist – often more dominant than Pastorius himself. This album shook the entire Jazz (and Rock) world and it is no wonder that as a result Pastorius was asked to join the best band on the scene at that time – Weather ReportFind albums by this artist – where he stayed for about six years as an equal partner and a third lead voice alongside Joe ZawinulFind albums by this artist and Wayne ShorterFind albums by this artist. What a tragedy it was to hear about Jaco’s death in 1987 just over a mere decade after this masterpiece was recorded, mentally ill and addicted to drugs. This album belongs to the Pantheon of Jazz recordings and is an absolute must!

  | JEFF BECK ~ BECK-OLA EPIC 66084 ~ UK ~ Classic Rock
2nd album from 1969 and every iota as good as the debut, with identical line-up. Both albums are credited with the initiation of `heavy rock`, but although Beck uses his guitar to play some heavy riffs, but today`s standards this is quite timid. Nevertheless this is magnificent music, played and sung by true visionary musicians and a great reminder of some of rock`s greatests moments.

1st album from 1968 by guitarist extraordinare Jeff Beck, who after exchanging guitar licks in the Yardbirds with Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page opted for a solo career. This is a monumental album, one of the corner stones of modern rock, but unfortunately often forgotten and neglected by fans and critics alike. Beck`s masterful attack on guitar and his brilliant technique, combined with the vocal talents of Rod Stewart make this as important as paraller debut albums by Cream or Led Zeppelin.

  | TRAFFIC ~ THE LAST GREAT TRAFFIC JAM EPIC 673460 ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
This is one of the best DVDs I have ever seen. It is a document of the 1994 Traffic reunion US tour (75 gigs), with two original Traffic members: Steve Winwood and Jim Capaldi supported by four younger, but extremely skilful musicians (and legendary guitarist Jerry Garcia on one track). They play all the classic Traffic material, but rather than trying to imitate the sound from the past they carefully re-arranged it for the 1990’s, still keeping the original charm. The music is of course heavenly; both veterans are in very good shape and perform brilliantly. The DVD is well edited, with short behind-the-scene inserts and great camera work on stage. In short: absolutely lovely. I wish more DVD material was of this quality and class. The DVD also includes a bonus CD EP with some studio material recorded while on tour. Watching this actually made me think that this is one of the very few tours I regret missing.

  | SLY & THE FAMILY STONE ~ THERE’S A RIOT GOIN’ ON (LIMITED DELUXE EDITION) EPIC 75911 (Barcode: 828767591124) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1971 Released: 2007
5th album by Sly & The Family StoneFind albums by this artist, which brings a dramatic change to the band’s sound. Released almost two years after its brilliant predecessor, this album again reflects the changes in the social / political atmosphere that took place, with skepticism, sarcasm and bitterness replacing hope, brotherhood and happiness. With the Flower Power and Hippie ideology dissolving soon after Woodstock and the harsh reality of drug abuse and addiction among rock stars becoming a frightful reality, the band (and their leader in particular) faced an increasing difficulty to create a cohesive piece of music. Finally after endless sessions the material for the new album was assembled, producing a dark and bleak musical mosaic. The music is still brilliant in every respect, but it is dense and brutal. The lyrics include harsh social commentary, which is often shocking. In retrospect the album is another musical milestone defining (or re-defining) Funk and paving the way for many future artists, who would build on these foundations. This beautiful new edition includes splendid liner notes and ultra-rare bonus tracks.

4th album by this great band, which represents the culmination of their unique style of psychedelic Funk, now completely refined and perfected. In addition to the superb musical performances the album also marks their strongest to date political / social statement, which reflects perfectly the atmosphere of the social revolution of the late 1960s in the US. Racial discrimination, social injustice, the Vietnam War and other issues are the subject matter of this masterpiece, which spoke directly to the heart of the young generation. The album includes several chart hits, including the song “I Want To Take You Higher”, which would become an anthem of the Woodstock generation. Definitely one of the most important US albums recorded in the 1960s and a milestone of modern music. This is an essential piece of musical education, regardless of your favorite musical inclination. 3rd album by this great band, released only a few month after its predecessor, but marking a remarkable development and perfection of their unique style. Although this album did not produce any hit singles, it is nevertheless an astonishing piece of music and a true classic. The band strengthens the rock / psychedelic elements considerably, with the (fuzz) guitar being much more up-front than on the two previous albums. Each and every song is perfect, although they are quite different from each other. The definition of Funk is basically all here, creating a new musical genre. | STEVE RAY VAUGHAN / DOUBLE TROUBLE ~ TEXAS FLOOD (LEGACY EDITION) EPIC 886978302427 (Barcode: 886978302427) ~ USA ~ Blues-Rock Recorded: 1983 Released: 2013
This is the debut album by American guitarist / vocalist / composer Steve Ray VaughanFind albums by this artist and his group Double TroubleFind albums by this artist, a power trio which also included bassist Tommy ShannonFind albums by this artist and drummer Chris LaytonFind albums by this artist. This is one of the few history-changing albums, which brought on the 1980s Blues revival, when this musical genre was slowly being forced out by the awful Pop "music", which was taking over the front stage, and in fact never stopped since.
Vaughan and his group presented a fresh look at the Century-old music, which peaked two decades earlier with the electric guitar heroes of the Rock revolution all being deeply indebted to Blues. He successfully, although probably subconsciously, amalgamated the Afro-American Blues tradition with the electrified Blues-Rock and Rock, and spiced it up with his absolutely amazing virtuosity, which left hordes of fans open-mouthed.
Vaughan died tragically in a helicopter crash at a ridiculous young age of 35, after recording just five albums, which makes if very difficult to make any assumptions as to his overall contribution to the Blues-Rock genre. In retrospect his albums are full of brilliant guitar solos and heartbreaking Blues vocals, which are a lasting legacy completely immune to the passing time. Vaughan´s deep respect and love of the music played by Jimmy HendrixFind albums by this artist and his interpretations of Hendrix material are particularly memorable.
This new edition adds a second CD with a previously unreleased live recording, which includes some material from the debut album and a few other tunes, including three Hendrix songs.
This is an absolute must to all Blues-Rock fans, as Vaughan takes no prisoners here and his guitar is simply red hot. Guitar heaven!

  | STEVE RAY VAUGHAN / DOUBLE TROUBLE ~ THE COMPLETE EPIC RECORDINGS COLLECTION EPIC 888430914223 (Barcode: 888430914223) ~ USA ~ Blues-Rock Recorded: 1980 - 1989 Released: 2014
This wonderful Box Set collects all the recordings made by American guitarist / vocalist / songwriter Steve Ray VaughanFind albums by this artist and his band Double TroubleFind albums by this artist, recorded for the EpicFind albums on this label label. It includes the four studio albums they recorded and a plethora of live material recorded between 1980 and 1989. Remastered, repackaged in original albums mini sleeves and expanded, this is an absolute must to every Blues-Rock enthusiast on this planet and an iconic statement of 20th Century American Culture.
Steve Ray Vaughan passed briefly trough our sky, dazzling like a comet and burning intensely, moving out of sight way too quickly. He completely shook the stagnant American Blues and Blues-Rock scene, quickly becoming the top Blues guitarist of the 1980s. The tragic accident in 1990, which claimed his life, was a terrible blow and a tragedy for the genre, which never truly recovered to this very day. In many ways Vaughan was the last of the great Blues-Rock heroes, who spearheaded the scene since the 1960s, and firmly belongs to the Pantheon of such Blues guitar luminaries like Eric ClaptonFind albums by this artist, Peter GreenFind albums by this artist, Jimmy HendrixFind albums by this artist and Johnny WinterFind albums by this artist.
Blues always was a music based on deep feeling rather than virtuosic proficiency, but Vaughan combined these two, personalizing the "perfect" Blues player. His guitar work especially that heard on the so called "slow" Blues pieces is simply unparalleled. Blues is also meant to be played live, as is most of the material included here, which makes it an authentic document of what he played on stage and spontaneously created in front of the listeners.
Personally I´m less thrilled with Vaughan´s ability to perfectly impersonate Jimmy Hendrix; I believe the Hendrix pieces were simply a means to get a wider attention from the audiences. But of course those were a minor chapter of his total output and the enormous wealth of his original material and personal interpretations of classic Blues songs stand out and form a proud legacy, which is everlasting.
Considering the fact that Blues influenced and in many respects conceived not only Jazz but also large parts of Rock and Pop, it deserves to be remembered and cherished. Listening to the music included in this Box Set is an excellent way to do just that. It is essential Blues-Rock heritage and no serious record collection should miss it this among its components. Blues heaven indeed!

  | SLY & THE FAMILY STONE ~ DANCE TO THE MUSIC (LIMITED DELUXE EDITION) EPIC 90274 (Barcode: 827969027424) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1967 Released: 2007
2nd album by this great band, which brought them the recognition and success they so much deserved. The title track was a major hit on the charts and eventually became one of the anthems of the Flower Power generation. The group develops here its eclectic and unique approach to music, using previously known elements in a new way. Intricate vocal and instrumental arrangements and quirky rhythm changes are still quite amazing 40 years later with the music loosing none of its charm. Of course they’d get even better with time, but this album already includes all the elements of greatness one can expect from a classic. This beautiful new edition includes splendid liner notes and ultra-rare bonus tracks. Warmly recommended.

  | SLY & THE FAMILY STONE ~ FRESH (LIMITED DELUXE EDITION) EPIC 90275 (Barcode: 827969027523) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1973 Released: 2007
6th album, which is not as dark as its predecessor and brings back some of the lighter / soul-drenched elements from the earlier albums. This was to be the band’s last Funk masterpiece and as the times were changing the musicians felt burned-out and weary, trying to stay afloat and facing serious drug abuse problems. In spite of all the difficulties and personal confusion they managed to produce a memorable set of new songs, which paved the ground for an entire generation of future Funk artists, including Stevie Wonder, Prince and many others, who would borrow heavily from these riffs. The genius of Sly and his band is still very much apparent here and the album was to become in a time another icon of the classic Funk. This beautiful new edition includes splendid liner notes and ultra-rare bonus tracks.

  | SLY & THE FAMILY STONE ~ A WHOLE NEW THING (LIMITED DELUXE EDITION) EPIC 90277 (Barcode: 827969027721) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1967 Released: 2007
1st album by one of the most important and influential US bands from the late 1960s and early 1970s. Sly & The Family StoneFind albums by this artist were pioneers on all fronts, musical, social and political. They were the first fully integrated group with Black and White, Men and Women musicians playing side by side. They were the first group to develop Funk as a fully-fledged musical genre. They were one of the first Pop / Rock acts to use a brass section as an integral part of the group. Later on they would also spearhead the political protest (in which many rock musicians participated) against segregation and the Vietnam War. The group had an immense influence on the US music scene, far beyond the Rock circles and earned many admirers and supporters among such distinguished musical figures as Miles DavisFind albums by this artist. Their legendary Woodstock appearance was one of the highlights of the festival. In short, they were one of the cornerstones of the US musical scene.
This debut album firmly belongs to the Flower Power movement of the San Francisco scene, mixing elements of soul, funk, psychedelic influences and jazz. The different ethnic backgrounds of the members created an amalgam of styles that was truly unique and groundbreaking. The music was eclectic and sophisticated way beyond what was happening on the music scene at the time, using jazzy brass arrangements and vocal harmonies in a way never previously attempted. This beautiful new edition includes splendid liner notes and ultra-rare bonus tracks. A beautiful trip down the memory lane!

  | MUZOZOIC ~ FUZOCK: EPICTRONIC 8057506208753 (Barcode: 8057506208753) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 2024 Released: 2024
This is an album Polish trio MuzozoicFind albums by this artist, which comprises of bassist / multi-instrumentalist Tomasz MaryniakFind albums by this artist, guitarist Konrad MaryniakFind albums by this artist and drummer Lukasz SwiderskiFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine tracks, all original compositions, four by Tomasz Maryniak, three by Swiderski and two by Konrad Maryniak.
The music, although obviously within the Jazz-Rock Fusion format, is surprisingly fresh and original, both as far as the compositions are concerned, especially the polyrhythmic tempi and odd meters, and the sound, which enhances the standard guitar trio with some brass and vocalese, courtesy of Tomasz, who plays (among other instruments) also trombone, and the vibraphone played by Swiderski. All these create a truly creative sonic aura, which is simply enchanting.
Another nice aspect of the music is the obvious sense of humor with somewhat Zappaesque feel, and combined with the originality of the music is pretty outstanding from the dull / repetitive Fusion music which is mostly stuck somewhere in the 1970s. I must say that this is definitely one of the most interesting Polish Fusion albums that landed on my desk since a few years.
Overall, this is a remarkably innovative, different and generally excellent piece of music, which every Fusion enthusiast the world over should be delighted to put his hands on. I had an absolute blast listening to this and I wholeheartedly recommend this album to everybody out there!

This wonderful box set collects the recordings by the seminal American Classic Rock group SpiritFind albums by this artist, formed in 1967 by guitarist Randy CaliforniaFind albums by this artist which also included his stepfather drummer Ed CassidyFind albums by this artist, keyboardist John LockeFind albums by this artist, bassist Mark AndesFind albums by this artist and vocalist / percussionist Jay FergusonFind albums by this artist. This original lineup recorded the first four studio albums by the group. This 5 CDs Box Set includes the first five studio albums recorded by the group ("SpiritFind albums with this title", "The Family That Plays TogetherFind albums with this title", "ClearFind albums with this title", "Twelve Dreams Of Dr. SardonicusFind albums with this title" and "FeedbackFind albums with this title") originally released on the OdeFind albums on this label and EpicFind albums on this label labels as well as a plethora of bonus material that more than doubles the total playing time and includes the Soundtrack of the film "The Model Shop", alternate mixes, outtakes and A & B sides of singles. Some of the bonus tracks included here were initially included on the 1991 compilation "Time Circle (1968-1972)Find albums with this title", which was by far not complete. All the tracks in this Box Set were newly remastered.
Spirit was a completely unique phenomenon on the American Rock scene, light years ahead of its time, amalgamating Rock, Psychedelia and early Jazz-Rock Fusion in a way no other group managed to do before or since. With a strong Jazzy undercurrent and superb writing talents of California and Ferguson, they created a body of music that remains completely innovative to this very day. Combined with their excellent instrumental abilities, the group soared into previously uncharted territory with grace and surprising (for their young age) authority. The aesthetic aura of the first four albums, which is astonishingly coherent in spite of their diversity, remains as one of Classic Rock´s all time highlights.
The Jazz influence, brought into the group by Cassidy, who was twenty years older that the rest of the group´s members, was especially unique. Spirit, although pioneering Jazz-Rock Fusion, did it in a very subtle way and incorporated the Jazzy feel into the overall Rock ambience, rather than moving into mostly instrumental Jazz-Rock Fusion, which characterized most other representatives of the idiom.
In retrospect the music included in this Box Set is completely timeless and lost absolutely nothing of its grace and beauty over the years. This comprehensive collection of the group´s early material is beyond reproach and the remastered sound makes listening to the music a delightful experience. It is of course an essential piece of Rock history, which earns it an honorable place in any serious music collection. An absolute must have!

  | PETER IVERS / BAND ~ KNIGHT OF THE BLUE COMMUNION HUX 088 (Barcode: 682970000886) ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1969 - 1970 Released: 2007
This is one of those legendary albums that a lot of people have heard about, but very few actually heard, or at least until recently when the album was reissued. American harmonica player Peter IversFind albums by this artist was a polymath, a Renaissance man of many talents. He was not only a gifted musician / composer, but also a writer, TV personality and avid follower of martial arts. His love for the Blues induced his decision to pick up the harmonica as his tool of musical expression, but his usage of that instrument was completely different and almost Avant-Garde in comparison to the instrument’s Blues roots. Active on the lively Boston scene, Ivers rubbed shoulder with many famous garage (and not so garage) local bands and by sheer fluke of luck landed a contract with EpicFind albums on this label – a major record label (subsidiary of ColumbiaFind albums on this label). For the recording of his debut album Ivers assembled a great group of musicians, which was quite “different” in every respect. By listing the instruments played by the group’s members: harmonica, oboe, bassoon, sax, guitar, acoustic bass, percussion and intermodulator (an early electronic instrument) one already sees that this was no ordinary group by any means. Add to this the fantastic female vocalist Yolande BavanFind albums by this artist, who fronted the band and poet Tim MayerFind albums by this artist, who supplied the lyrics and you get one of the most unique US bands of the era, which is often compared to Captain BeefheartFind albums by this artist or early Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist in their unorthodox musical approach. This debut album is special in every respect: the complex music, the unusual use of the woodwinds and brass and the mesmerizing vocals, all combined creating a weird and wonderful sonic experience. Naturally the album was a total commercial flop and although Epic did record a send album with the band, it was shelved. The only glance of that album – a single - is featured here as bonus tracks. The second album was recorded with another sensational female vocalist, Asha PuthliFind albums by this artist. Ivers went on to record two more albums for Warner Bros., but these were significantly less successful. He died mysteriously in 1983. This album remains to this day as one of the most interesting documents of an era, when everything was conceivable and some of it doable. Very interesting!

  | GEORGE DUKE ~ MY SOUL – THE COMPLETE MPS FUSION RECORDINGS MPS 602517515048 (Barcode: 602517515048) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1971 - 1976 Released: 2008
US keyboardist George DukeFind albums by this artist is one of the most colorful and versatile figures on the Jazz-Rock Fusion scene. His career stretches ways back to the mid-1960s and lasts to this very day. Starting as a classic Jazz pianist, Duke gradually moved from straightforward Jazz into Jazz-Rock Fusion, abandoning the acoustic piano in favor of the electric one and later adding a myriad of synthesizers to his workshop. His stints with Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist, Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist (twice) and Cannonball AdderleyFind albums by this artist (where he replaced Joe ZawinulFind albums by this artist) in his formative years influenced his musical path tremendously and it was Zappa who pushed him towards using synthesizers and exploring new musical vistas.
Duke’s development and gradual change of style and musical vocabulary was brilliantly captured on his recordings for the legendary German MPSFind albums on this label label. His connection with MPS was quite accidental and recording for a small European label was quite unusual for US Artists at the time, but in retrospect Duke couldn’t have made a better decision, as the label allowed him total artistic freedom, which was almost impossible to achieve on the US scene. He recorded a total of nine albums for MPS, seven of which are collected in this superb Box Set.
His first recording for MPS dating from 1966 was still very much a classic Jazz affair, which stylistically does not belong to his Fusion period, was not included here (perhaps a correct decision as far as the title goes, but as it is still unavailable on CD, it would be nice to have it reissued as well). The last recording for MPS, a solo keyboards project, is also omitted, for contractual bullshit reasons, as it caused a big legal dispute at the time, with Duke changing labels from MPS to EpicFind albums on this label. That album was reissued as “The 1976 Solo Keyboard AlbumFind albums with this title” on the Wounded BirdFind albums on this label label (the original MPS title was “The DreamFind albums with this title”).
However, the remaining seven albums (“SolusFind albums with this title” and “The Inner SourceFind albums with this title”, which were released together as a double LP, “Faces In ReflectionFind albums with this title”, “FeelFind albums with this title”, “I Love The Blues, She Heard Me CryFind albums with this title”, “The Aura Will PrevailFind albums with this title” and “Liberated FantasiesFind albums with this title”) recorded between April 1971 and January 1976 are included in their entirety, beautifully remastered. These four CDs include such an immense amount of music, which is so versatile stylistically and conceptually, that it constitutes a tremendous and essential document of the era.
As far as Duke’s playing and even more importantly his compositional skills, this is a beautiful portrait of an Artist, which every fan and music lover will cherish. The players on the sessions present here constitute a long list of some of the best Jazz and Fusion musicians active at the time, too long to be included here. For the inquisitive listeners let me just mention that even Frank Zappa is present (albeit incognito) on two tracks, as are many members of his Mothers Of InventionFind albums by this artist. There is something for everyone here and overall this Box Set is one unadulterated, intense plateful of fun and musical ingenuity. Absolutely essential! Side Note The legendary German MPSFind albums on this label (Musik Produktion Schwarzwald) label, founded by Hans Georg Brunner-SchwerFind albums by this artist (HGBS) in 1963, first as SABAFind albums on this label Records and later on from 1968 as MPS Records, was the most important independent European record label, which had an enormous contribution to the development of European Jazz. For many years MPS cooperated with the legendary German producer / author Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, my Friend and Mentor, whose visionary approach and open-mindedness brought the crème de la crème of the Jazz (in the broadest meaning of the word) musicians from all over the world to the label. Between 1963 and 1983 MPS produced about five hundred albums, many of which are among the most important Jazz recordings on this planet.
In 1983 the MPS catalog was sold to UniversalFind albums on this label, which sadly resulted in all those artistic treasures to almost disappear from the face of the earth – a situation not only tragic but culturally criminal. Universal reissued a part of the MPS albums (probably 128 titles) on CD between 1999 and 2011 under the "Most Perfect Sound Edition" moniker.
Since 2008 the German Promising MusicFind albums on this label label released some of the MPS recordings, but at a very slow pace.
In 2014 the German company Edel AG bought the MPS catalogue from Universal and released a series of 25 MPS albums on CD with a new slipcase graphic design, which brought all those excellent albums back to life. In 2015 Edel AG started to record and release new albums under the MPS moniker. In 2016 Edel AG released a series of 10 classic MPS albums on CD, which were beautifully remastered and re-packaged, presenting the original artwork and liner notes, as well as new liner notes and photographs. An obvious labor of love, these reissues are what the MPS catalogue truly deserves. This project was continued in 2017 with another series of 10 classic MPS albums released on CD. In later years some new reissues were released sporadically.
Over the years many SABA / MPS albums were reissued in Japan, which is often the only available source for these albums today, but that is a story in itself.

This marvelous Box Set collects all the studio recordings by the great British troubadour DonovanFind albums by this artist, recorded during his explosive years, which changed the shape of Pop and Rock music as we know it. It includes the five extraordinary studio albums: "Sunshine SupermanFind albums with this title", "Mellow YellowFind albums with this title", "The Hurdy Gurdy ManFind albums with this title", "BarabajagalFind albums with this title" and finally "A Gift From A Flower To A GardenFind albums with this title" which was originally a double LP. All these albums were released by EpicFind albums on this label in the USA and PyeFind albums on this label in UK, often out of sync and with different track lists, as a result of the usual music business BS that prevailed at the time.
These albums feature all original songs written by Donovan and were produced by the British producer Mickie MostFind albums by this artist. Some of the arrangements were written by the great John CameronFind albums by this artist and the list of supporting musicians reads like a who´s who of the British Jazz and Rock scene at the time: pianist John Cameron, flautist Harold McNairFind albums by this artist, guitarists Jeff BeckFind albums by this artist and Jimmy PageFind albums by this artist, bassist Danny ThompsonFind albums by this artist, John Paul JonesFind albums by this artist and Jack BruceFind albums by this artist, drummers Phil SeamenFind albums by this artist and Tony CarrFind albums by this artist and many others.
In addition to the five original albums on three CDs, this set includes a fourth CD full of bonus material, which wonderfully fills in and expands the picture of Donovan´s creativity. A well researched booklet with overview of Donovan´s career during those years is also included.
Donovan´s brilliant mixture of Celtic roots, Psychedelia, Jazz and Rock, spiced with his incredibly poetic lyrics, was an absolutely unique phenomenon in the Pop / Rock history and no other artist managed to create such a massive body of brilliant songs within such short period of time. His music is as much relevant today as it was at the time it was created and lost nothing of its beauty, vitality or artistic power over time. They certainly don´t make music like that any more!
The only regret, as far as this Box Set is concerned, is the fact that it does not include the brilliant live album "In Concert (The Complete 1967 Anaheim Show)Find albums with this title", which would have made this set even more perfect.
This is an absolutely essential piece of music history, which deserves an honorable place in any serious music collection!

These albums have lost absolutely nothing of their beauty and sophistication over the years. Although these new editions often bring back to life some of the best music ever made on this planet, which in many cases has been lost in the tides of time and was unavailable on the market for ages, they suffer from an unforgivable disregard for the essence of cultural values and general sloppiness, contrary to human decency, which requires as to treat our Cultural Legacy with respect and loyalty.
The Box Sets produced under these monikers have no discographical information whatsoever about the lineups, musician names, composers, lyricists, dates and places of recording, original release data and even basic copyright data (the last is strictly illegal BTW). Although the original LP sleeves are reproduced, they are often edited and information (which would be in most cases too small to be readable) is removed. Most importantly these Box Sets don't include any booklet offering a historical background and perspective about the Artists and the Music, which are extremely important and vital to the preservation of our Culture and passing the knowledge to the next generations.
In short the fact that these Box Sets are meant to be inexpensive, does not mean that they have to be cheap. Considering the fact how many times this music has been sold over and over again by the labels, this is a crying shame!

  | GEORGE DUKE ~ THE COMPLETE 1970S EPIC ALBUMS COLLECTION SONY 886979303225 (Barcode: 886979303225) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock-World Fusion Recorded: 1977 - 1979 Released: 2012
American keyboardist / composer George DukeFind albums by this artist is definitely one of the most colorful, dynamic, brilliant and versatile musical personalities on the scene. With a career spanning five decades and activities covering such diverse sub-genres as mainstream Jazz, Jazz-Rock Fusion, Rock, Funk and Jazz-World Fusion, Duke made over the years an enormous impact on the development of contemporary music.
Following a several years long association (early to mid 1970s) with the legendary German MPSFind albums on this label label, where Duke released his revolutionary early Fusion albums, he switched to the EpicFind albums on this label label (a subsidiary of ColumbiaFind albums on this label), where he recorded six albums between 1977 and 1979, all of which are included in this wonderful Box Set.
The Epic recordings reveal Duke gradually moving away from the Jazz and even Fusion roots, replacing those by Funk and other popular music influences. Only the last album in this set ("A Brazilian Love AffairFind albums with this title") is different and presents Duke as a Jazz-World Fusion artist, with an obvious affinity for Brazilian music. On that album he is supported by several famous Brazilian musicians, including vocalist Milton NascimentoFind albums by this artist, percussionist Airto MoreiraFind albums by this artist, vocalist Flora PurimFind albums by this artist, guitarist Toninho HortaFind albums by this artist and many others, in addition to his American regulars. On all the albums he plays with an excellent group of musicians, which includes his long-time friend bassist Stanley ClarkeFind albums by this artist, drummer Leon Ndugu ChanclerFind albums by this artist, bassist Byron MillerFind albums by this artist, percussionist Sheila EscovedoFind albums by this artist and numerous others, including many brass players as well, which shows a clear influence of Earth, Wind & FireFind albums by this artist on Duke´s music at the time.
Duke composed all the music on these albums (with very few minor exceptions) and he also utilizes his vocals, which is the most criticized issue regarding this music. As much as these albums were successful on the US market, they were treated with disrespect and sheer detest by his European and Japanese fans, who accused him of commerciality. The problem was of course, that this music should have not been compared to or judged by the same criteria as his earlier output, which was completely different stylistically.
In retrospect this music still sounds great and lost nothing of its power and ingenuity, providing it is treated separately from Duke´s other output. The tunes are great, as are the performances, and one can´t resist the funky rhythms unless one is completely deaf or brain-dead. There are very few musicians, who display the same level of integrity and ingenuity as George Duke in everything they do over the years. He is the man and nobody can deny it!

American bassist / composer / bandleader Stanley ClarkeFind albums by this artist is one of the iconic figures of the Jazz-Rock Fusion explosion, which swept the world in the late 1960s / early 1970s. His distinctive and virtuosic bass lines have set standards, which are followed to this very day, with very few bass players being able to play as technically perfect as he always did and even fewer to be as inventive, groundbreaking and innovative. Although primarily associated with Fusion and the electric bass guitar, Clarke always was (and still is) an exceptional acoustic bass player with a superb Jazz technique and sensitivity.
Clarke first came to prominence as a member of the first lineup of the legendary Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist´s ensemble Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist, where his bass lines shaped the music as significantly as Corea´s keyboard wizardry. Clarke stayed with the original band for several years and remained a Corea´s friend and collaborator in the decades that followed. In parallel to his work with Return To Forever, Clarke started a solo recording career, which produced some of Fusion´s and later also Funk´s greatest moments.
Following the release of his debut solo album on PolydorFind albums on this label, he switched to the NemperorFind albums on this label label (currently owned by SonyFind albums on this label) and later on to the EpicFind albums on this label label (a subsidiary of ColumbiaFind albums on this label). He recorded five albums for Nemperor between 1974 and 1979, the last of which was a live double LP. In the 1980s and early 1990s his albums were released on Epic. This Box Set includes all the five albums released on Nemperor and as a bonus also a live album recorded during Clarke´s band tours in 1976-1977, which was released only in 1991.
Of course the list of names of the musicians, who play alongside Clarke on these albums, reads like an encyclopedia of American music of that period. To mention just a few: keyboardists Jan HammerFind albums by this artist, George DukeFind albums by this artist, Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, David SanciousFind albums by this artist and others, guitarists Bill ConnorsFind albums by this artist, Jeff BeckFind albums by this artist, John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist and others, drummers Tony WilliamsFind albums by this artist, Steve GaddFind albums by this artist, Lenny WhiteFind albums by this artist, Gerry BrownFind albums by this artist and others and a myriad of other musicians. Clarke composed almost every note played here, with very few exceptions, and the music is absolutely marvelous and ass-kicking, as it was at the time it was recorded.
Clarke was often criticized for utilizing his vocals on some of these albums, which of course was not one of his fortes, but since the vocals are relatively scarce and in retrospect really not that bad, that point of criticism id completely insignificant in view of the majestic content of the music contained herein.
Every bass player today, consciously or subconsciously, directly or indirectly is influenced one way or another by what Stanley Clarke played over the years, and this Box Set is a great way to celebrate his talent. Brilliant stuff!

  | JOE SATRIANI ~ THE COMPLETE STUDIO RECORDINGS SONY 887254184225 (Barcode: 887254184225) ~ USA ~ Pop & Rock Recorded: 1986 - 2013 Released: 2014
This Box Set collects all the studio albums released on the EpicFind albums on this label label by prominent American Rock guitarist / composer Joe SatrianiFind albums by this artist, one of the most prolific and influential guitar heroes since mid 1980s. The Box Set includes fourteen newly remastered albums and a bonus CD collecting many tracks previously available only on special or Japanese editions of his albums.
Satriani is considered a highly technical player and innovator of many typical Rock guitar licks heard by contemporary Rock guitarist all over the world. He plays almost exclusively his original material on his solo recordings but also collaborated with other musicians and played lead guitar in Rock groups like Deep PurpleFind albums by this artist for example. He also founded the G3Find albums by this artist trio, which featured many leading Rock guitarists as members of the trio over the years. Many famous contemporary Rock guitarists studied with Satriani over the years.
Although Satriani´s teachers in his youth were Jazz musicians, including the legendary pianist Lennie TristanoFind albums by this artist and pioneering guitarist Billy BauerFind albums by this artist, his music has very little, if any Jazz influences and stays firmly within the American mainstream Rock idiom, which is somewhat limited and in retrospect repetitive. He does however improvise extensively during his solos, often being very imaginative and with obvious extraordinary skills.
For lovers of guitar based instrumental Rock music this Box Set is a dream come true and an obvious source of joy. Others might enjoy parts of this extensive collection, absorbing it over time in limited doses. In any case this is a momentous piece of contemporary American Rock history.

  | JEFF BECK ~ ORIGINAL ALBUM CLASSICS SONY 888751056329 (Barcode: 888751056329) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1971 - 1977 Released: 2015
This Box Set collects reissues of five albums by the legendary British guitarist / composer / bandleader Jeff BeckFind albums by this artist, originally released on the EpicFind albums on this label label between 1971 and 1977. They are: “Rough And ReadyFind albums with this title” (1971), “Jeff Beck GroupFind albums with this title” (1972), “Blow By BlowFind albums with this title” (1975), “WiredFind albums with this title” (1976) and “Jeff Beck With The Jan Hammer Group LiveFind albums with this title” (1977). Those are the third to seventh albums recorded by Jeff Beck, except the two albums (one studio and one live) recorded by him as part of the short lived Beck, Bogert & AppiceFind albums by this artist trio.
The first two albums included here were recorded by the second incarnation of the Jeff Back GroupFind albums by this artist (the first incarnation recorded the first two Back’s albums “TruthFind albums with this title” and “Beck-OlaFind albums with this title”), which included vocalist Bobby TrenchFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Max MiddletonFind albums by this artist, bassist Clive ChamanFind albums by this artist and drummer Cozy PowellFind albums by this artist. Stylistically these were transitional albums between Rock and Jazz-Rock Fusion, which was Beck’s main interest in the years that followed.
The next two albums present some of Beck’s most admired work as a guitarist, both being purely instrumental and clearly moving deeply into Jazz-Rock Fusion, but with the unique characteristics of his superb sense of melody and fabulous improvisational abilities, which have but a few equals among the world’s guitar heroes. Beck is accompanied by Middleton, bassist Phil ChenFind albums by this artist and drummer Richard BaileyFind albums by this artist on “Blow By Blow” and Middleton and Czech keyboardist Jan HammerFind albums by this artist, American bassist Wilbur BascombFind albums by this artist and drummer Narada Michael WaldenFind albums by this artist on “Wired”.
The live album is a full-blown Fusion affair on which Back is supported by Hammer and an all American team of violinist Steve KindlerFind albums by this artist, bassist Fernando SaundersFind albums by this artist and drummer Tony SmithFind albums by this artist. Not surprisingly the music sounds not far from Mahavishnu OrchestraFind albums by this artist.
Overall this is a real treat to all guitar fans and undeniably some of the most exciting music recorded in the 1970s. Side Note The "Original Album SeriesFind albums with this title" by Warner Bros.Find albums on this label, the "Original Album ClassicsFind albums with this title" by SonyFind albums on this label, the "5 Original AlbumsFind albums with this title" by UniversalFind albums on this label, the Box Sets by RhinoFind albums on this label and other similar releases are an archetypal example of how good intentions turn sour.

  | GEORGE DUKE ~ THE 1976 SOLO KEYBOARD ALBUM WOUNDED BIRD 8208 (Barcode: 664140820821) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1976 Released: 2004
Keyboards player George DukeFind albums by this artist has always been one of my favorite musicians, mainly due to his phenomenal achievements during the first decade of his career. His early piano trio recordings (mid 1960s), his work with Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist (late 1960s) and finally his stint with Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist (early to mid 1970s) are all examples of pure genius and incredible musical versatility. Unfortunately by the end of the 1970s Duke phased out gradually from his jazz and fusion oriented activities and moved into pop, mostly as a producer. His recordings sine then bear little resemblance to the glory of his early days. During the 1970s Duke recorded a series of revolutionary and groundbreaking albums for the legendary German MPSFind albums on this label label (sadly mostly not available on CD), which showcased his exemplary jazz-rock / fusion wizardry. This album, his first completely solo recording, was the last of these MPS recordings, released under the title “The Dream”. Duke re-mixed the album in 1980 and in 1982 it was released in the US on the EpicFind albums on this label label under this new title. Unavailable for many years, here it is finally back in circulation. The music, all composed by Duke, is a set of beautifully crafted melodies, played by an array of keyboards, sounding like an entire ensemble. Absolutely brilliant and timeless piece of music!
