  | HARRY BECKETT ~ JOY UNLIMITED CADILLAC 017 (Barcode: 5020675572485) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock-World Fusion Recorded: 1974 Released: 2020
This is a reissue / remaster of a classic album by British Jazz trumpeter / composer / bandleader Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist, recorded with a sextet, with also included keyboardist Brian MillerFind albums by this artist, guitarist Ray RussellFind albums by this artist, bassist Daryl RunswickFind albums by this artist, drummer Nigel MorrisFind albums by this artist and percussionist Martin DavidFind albums by this artist. The album presents six original compositions, all by Beckett.
This long overdue reissue was prompted by the publication of Beckett’s biography “The Many Faces of Harry Beckett” by John ThurlowFind albums by this artist, who also wrote the new liner notes, which are featured on the album’s artwork, in addition to the original liner notes by John FordhamFind albums by this artist. The album, which was Beckett’s fourth release as a leader, was released by the small independent CadillacFind albums on this label Records label established by John JackFind albums by this artist in 1973, and which subsequently released several iconic British Jazz recordings, some of which are still waiting for a reissue.
The music on this album is quite different from Beckett’s earlier recordings, which were more within the modern mainstream Jazz idiom. This album is however pure Jazz-Rock Fusion with some World Music influences, mostly rhythmically. In addition to Beckett’s brilliant trumpet parts, the rest of the instrumental work is highly charged by the electric guitar and keyboards, which take the music towards the British Fusion, which flourished at the time.
Russell, Miller and Runswick play some highly exciting soli throughout the album, which could be easily associated with the Fusion bands active at the time, like IsotopeFind albums by this artist, Rock WorkshopFind albums by this artist, IfFind albums by this artist and many others. With the Latin / Caribbean rhythms added, this album is certainly quite unique and in retrospect deserves a much wider recognition than it managed to achieve.
Overall, this is a classic British Jazz gem, worthy a proper place in any serious record collection. It should also be quite educational for the new generation of musicians, showing how cross-pollination and genre-crossing can lead to magnificent results, not to mention the respect due to all these wonderful musicians, who proved there are no limits to creativity. This is an absolute must of course and thanks to John’s initiative to make it available again, which he is practicing on the daily basis by running the Jazz In BritainFind albums on this label reissues label.

  | ISOTOPE ~ ISOTOPE ESOTERIC 2272 (Barcode: 5013929737228) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1973 Released: 2011
After playing with Brian AugerFind albums by this artist, Stomu Yamash`taFind albums by this artist and many leading Jazz ensembles, guitarist / composer Gary BoyleFind albums by this artist, one of the most innovative and technically brilliant players on the British scene, eventually founded his own quartet, called IsotopeFind albums by this artist. In retrospect, Isotope was one of the finest early British Jazz-Rock ensembles, which played ambitious music and included some of the best players on the scene at the time. But as usual, playing fine music made it difficult to keep the group going for a long time, so after recording three excellent albums and sticking together for a few years, Isotope disappeared into oblivion. This was their 1st album and the quartet included keyboardist Brian MillerFind albums by this artist (who also wrote most of the music on this album), great bassist Jeff ClyneFind albums by this artist (NucleusFind albums by this artist) and drummer Nigel MorrisFind albums by this artist (who played with Boyle in Yamash`ta’s group). The music is brilliant from start to finish, slightly resembling Mahavishnu OrchestraFind albums by this artist, but of course completely original. This is an absolute must to all early British Jazz-Rock connoisseurs!

  | BRIAN MILLER ~ WHATEVER NEXT? INVERSION 001 (Barcode: 5070000076706) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 2013 Released: 2014
This is the debut album by British Jazz keyboardist / composer Brian MillerFind albums by this artist, recorded with top British instrumentalists: saxophonist Phil ToddFind albums by this artist, vibraphonist / percussionist Frank RicottiFind albums by this artist, guitarist John ParricelliFind albums by this artist, bassists Chris LaurenceFind albums by this artist / Trevor BarryFind albums by this artist and drummers Paul RobinsonFind albums by this artist / Les CirkelFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine tracks, all of which are original compositions by Miller.
It took Miller over fifty years to recorded this debut album, although he is a true veteran of the British Jazz scene, having been a member of such ensembles as IsotopeFind albums by this artist, Turning PointFind albums by this artist and Morrissey-Mullen BandFind albums by this artist, as well as accompanying top Pop artists. Well, better late than never is definitely appropriate in this case, as the album is a lovely example of British Jazz at its best, based on absolutely marvelous tunes and executed perfectly by this superb team.
Miller plays some lively organ and piano parts, Parricelli adds tasty guitar licks, Ricotti adds vibes and percussion seasoning, Todd solos passionately and both bass / drums pair support the music admirably – in short joy from start to finish, on the lighter side of the Jazz spectrum, but full of good taste and musicality.
Overall, although completely obscure among the British Jazz fans, this is a lovely album, which deserves to be heard and taken out of its anonymity. I am sure Brian has some copies left so please contact him and get one as long as they last. And please, Brian, make another one ASAP!

  | STAN SULZMANN / JOHN TAYLOR ~ DOUBLE EXPOSURE INVERSION 002 (Barcode: 5070000076713) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1990 Released: 2016
This is an archival album by the fabulous British Jazz duo of saxophonist / flautist / composer Stan SulzmannFind albums by this artist and keyboardist / composer John TaylorFind albums by this artist, recorded in 1990 and released 26 years later on a small British label InversionFind albums on this label Records, owned by Brian MillerFind albums by this artist, another British Jazz legend. The album presents thirteen tracks, all composed or co-composed by Sultzmann and Taylor.
The music is absolutely delightful, serene and lyrical, with strong influences by European Classical music, but also full of Jazz hints and the respective musical preferences by both participants. Much of the music was spontaneously improvised “on the spot”, but for an outsider the result sounds completely coherent and beautifully developed, as if devised and planned long ahead.
The fact that this completely forgotten session finally sees the light of day is a revelation, since it shows many less familiar facets of both these marvelous musicians and the superb fellowship they were able to enjoy, producing some of the most touching British Jazz, as if by accident.
Overall, this is a major discovery for the dedicated British Jazz fans, and a joy to see this little gem available, since hiding it from the public would have been a sad and regrettable event. It goes without saying that this album deserves an honorable spot in every serious British Jazz collection!

  | TURNING POINT ~ CREATURES OF THE NIGHT / SILENT PROMISE VOCALION 8448 (Barcode: 765387844820) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1977 - 1978 Released: 2009
1st and 2nd albums by the great British Jazz-Rock Fusin ensemble Turning PointFind albums by this artist, one of the most interesting and unique phenomena of the late 1970s, formed by great bassist Jeff ClyneFind albums by this artist and vocalist Pepi LemerFind albums by this artist with saxophonist Dave TidballFind albums by this artist, pianist Brian MillerFind albums by this artist and drummer Paul RobinsonFind albums by this artist. The two albums represent the entire recorded output of the group, which disbanded following the recording of the second album as the musical scene at the time could no longer sustain ambitious music. The group´s music is a wonderful, typical British version of Jazz-Rock Fusion, which is based on clever compositions and virtuosic performances. The band had all that and more, as Lemer´s vocalese was quite unusual and the integration of the human voice as another instrument was rarely used, with the exception of Polish musicians Michal UrbaniakFind albums by this artist and Urszula DudziakFind albums by this artist in their bands. Therefore I´ve always kept a worm spot for this band in my heart and the fact that this music was unavailable for so many years was a crying shame, now corrected by the wonderful Vocalion label. This is a must for any true lover of the British Jazz and Jazz-Rock Fusion followers, but Canterbury fans will also find this music fascinating. Most warmly recommended!
