  | MIKE WESTBROOK ~ LIVE 1972 (CADILLAC 50TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION) CADILLAC 001 (Barcode: 5020675000421) ~ UK ~ Avant-Garde Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1972 Released: 2023
This is an expanded / remastered reissue of an album by the iconic British Jazz pianist / composer / bandleader Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist, recorded with his extremely short-lived quintet, which featured him on electric piano together with saxophonist / flautist George KhanFind albums by this artist, guitarist Gary BoyleFind albums by this artist, bassist Butch PotterFind albums by this artist and drummer Alan JacksonFind albums by this artist. The music was recorded live and the original album was released on LP in 1973 as “LiveFind albums with this title” and presented only five-tracks. This new edition adds two previously unreleased performances, with all the music remastered by the lamented Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist at his Temple Music Studios. Although released previously in 2017 on the now defunct HUXFind albums on this label label, a copy of which is now impossible to find, this edition celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the legendary CadillacFind albums on this label label founded by John JackFind albums by this artist, as it was the first release on that label. It is absolutely delightful to see the British Jazz legacy being kept alive and the Cadillac label getting a second “life”.
For people not familiar with the original album, this music is a true revelation from start to finish. All the music was composed by Westbrook and includes small ensemble versions of some of his orchestral compositions, like “Marching Song” and “Metropolis” and some Free Form improvised music, or Free Jazz Fusion if one prefers, rarely associated with Westbrook in general, and as such especially unique. Five of the tracks on this album are over ten minutes in duration, which emphasizes the improvisational character of the music herein. The album is also an important document of George Khan’s talents, which sadly have little exposure on the many albums he plays on, certainly not as a Free Form improviser featured here, which is breathtaking.
Overall, this is a relatively little known episode in Westbrook’s extensive career, which together with the two albums recorded by the Solid Gold Cadillac band documents his Jazz-Rock Fusion adventures in the early 1970s and is a fascinating glimpse into his past. For the many Westbrook followers and British Jazz enthusiasts, this is a Holy Grail, absolutely worthy of an honorable place in any serious record collection.

  | BOBBY WELLINS ~ DON`T WORRY `BOUT ME CADILLAC 005 (Barcode: 5020675970724) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1996 Released: 1997
This is a live album by the legendary British Jazz saxophonist / composer / bandleader Bobby WellinsFind albums by this artist, recorded in a classic quartet setting with pianist Graham HarveyFind albums by this artist, bassist Alec DankworthFind albums by this artist and drummer Martin DrewFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight tracks, seven of which are standards and one is an original composition by Wellins. It was recorded at the mythological Vortex club in London and released on the legendary CadillacFind albums on this label label, founded by John JackFind albums by this artist.
Although primarily known as the saxophonist on the early iconic albums by Stan TraceyFind albums by this artist, Wellins had an impressive solo career over the years and the mellow / sweet tone of his tenor saxophone is one of the most recognizable voices of the formative days of the modern British Jazz. He continued to perform and record over the years and his legacy is worth being remembered and heard. He died in 2016.
Overall, this is an important document of the great talent and the unique sound of Wellins, supported here by excellent musicians and playing in top form. For British Jazz fans, this is a worthy addition to every serious collection, commemorating his contribution to the scene and its recorded legacy.

  | JOHNNY DYANI ~ REJOICE / TOGETHER CADILLAC 012/013 (Barcode: 5020675971325) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1972 - 1980 Released: 2014
This is an expanded 2CD reissue / remaster of two albums involving the great South African (and later British / European) bassist Johnny DyaniFind albums by this artist, both released on the legendary CadillacFind albums on this label label, founded by John JackFind albums by this artist.
The first album “RejoiceFind albums with this title” was recorded by Dyani with trumpeter Mongezi FezaFind albums by this artist and Turkish drummer / percussionist Okay TemizFind albums by this artist, collectively called XabaFind albums by this artist, in 1972, but released only in 1988, and is here expanded by a previously unreleased track, over twenty minutes in duration. The second album “TogetherFind albums with this title” was recorded by the ensemble called Witchdoctor`s SonFind albums by this artist, an octet that included Dyani on keyboards and vocals, saxophonist Dudu PukwanaFind albums by this artist and other musicians, recorded between 1979-1980, but released only in 1987. Both albums were recorded in Stockholm, Sweden.
The album is a great tribute to South African expatriate community, which contributed greatly to the development of the British and European Jazz scene over the years, in many respects more profoundly than any other group among the many emigres that turned British Jazz into the most interesting and culturally fertile grounds ever. Of course Dyani, Feza and Pukwana are best known for their work as members of the legendary Blue NotesFind albums by this artist ensemble.
Musically the two albums are quite different: The intimate trio recording spotlights the Free Jazz phenomenon with emphasis of Feza’s sensational trumpet virtuosity, Dyani’s superb bass pulsations and the extraordinary drumming fluency of Temiz, who was resident in Stockholm when the trio set was recorded. The trio recorded several albums together, all released at the time on Swedish labels. The octet recording is more about collective improvisation and ethnic influences, group dynamic and the joy of playing together.
Overall, as all the Cadillac reissues, this is a brilliant document of the British Jazz scene, which should be an absolutely essential part of any serious British Jazz collection, thankfully now available on CD, with the original LPs being now very hard to find. Grab a copy as long as they last!

  | STAN TRACEY / MIKE OSBORNE ~ ALONE & TOGETHER CADILLAC 014/015 (Barcode: 5020675971424) ~ UK ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 1974 Released: 2015
This is an expanded 2CD reissue of the solo piano album by iconic British Jazz pianist / composer Stan TraceyFind albums by this artist, recorded live at the Wigmore Hall on June 18, 1974 and originally released as “AloneFind albums with this title” later that year on the CadillacFind albums on this label label. This reissue adds another CD of previously unreleased music recorded at the same concert, which was a duo of Tracey with saxophonist / composer Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist. Each of the CDs includes just one continuous improvised music piece, lasting 42 and 45 minutes respectively.
The Osborne / Tracey duo released an album “OriginalFind albums with this title” on the Cadillac label in 1973 and another album “TandemFind albums with this title” on the OgunFind albums on this label label in 1977, and the duo recording herein expands significantly their common recorded legacy.
The music is of course nothing short of stunning, a prime example of the dramatic change of the British Jazz scene during the preceding decade, from Jazz based on the American tradition, including anything between Swing and Bebop, into a full-blown unique genre, which created a new Jazz language, embracing the tradition but expanding it with European music influences and embracing new forms like Free Jazz and Improvised Music.
The two CDs in this set differ significantly on many levels and yet have also a wide common ground. Both musicians travelled a long road on their musical paths, and although Osborne was a much more radical and complex musician and personality, they both obviously made many giant steps, before this music was recorded.
Solo piano is by definition the most “naked” format and as such the most difficult one altogether, but Tracey managed to record several solo piano album and each of those was a triumphant achievement on many levels – Artistic, aesthetic, technical and intellectual as one. This solo recording is one of them – a brilliant piece not only of music, but an example of how Tracey’s mind worked, constructing the flow of themes and free improvisations glues together as if pre-conceived, which of course it was not so in reality. His brilliant technique is in a way secondary here, as a solo performance is always first and foremost an emotional affair and this music simply explodes with emotions.
In complete contrast to the solo performance, a duo is all about combining forces, exchanging ideas, supporting each other, pulling and pushing, leading and following, which is beautifully documented here. The sublime balance between Tracey’s “sanity” and Osborne’s “insanity” is the key to understand what is going on here, and the resulting music is a fascinating example of the “Art of the Duo” idiom. As much as Osborne is pushing the music toward Free Jazz, Tracey is “holding him back” so to speak with his melodic accompaniment, only allowing himself to fully explode during the crescendos of emotions the music leads to.
Overall, this is an iconic release, a sublime document of the most productive period of the British Jazz explosion, a point of reference and a milestone of everything that happened on the British Jazz scene at the time. Considering how short Osborne’s career lasted and how limited his recorded legacy is, this is album is nothing short of a Holy Grail, with the Trace’s album remastered as a cherry on top. Absolutely essential piece of British Jazz legacy and a must in any serious record collection. In memory of John JackFind albums by this artist (died 2017), the owner of the Cadillac label, for all his contributions to British Jazz, of which releasing this music is just a tiny part.

  | MIKE WESTBROOK ~ THE LAST NIGHT AT THE OLD PLACE CADILLAC 016 (Barcode: 5051078961828) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1968 Released: 2018
This is a wonderful archival release of a live concert played by pianist / composer / bandleader Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist and his Concert BandFind albums by this artist, recorded at Ronnie ScottFind albums by this artist´s Old Place on May 25, 1968 – the very night when the Old Place on Gerrard Street finally closed its doors for good. The band comprised of saxophonists Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist, Bernie LivingFind albums by this artist, George KhanFind albums by this artist and John SurmanFind albums by this artist, trombonists Malcolm GriffithsFind albums by this artist and Paul RutherfordFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Dave HoldsworthFind albums by this artist, Westbrook on piano, bassist Harry MillerFind albums by this artist and drummer Alan JacksonFind albums by this artist. The album presents eleven tracks, most of which are original compositions by Westbrook and all of which were released on the "ReleaseFind albums with this title" album recorded by the same band less than three months later.
This album documents the wonderful freedom the band members enjoyed within the band, and especially so during this very special occasion. The recording presents extended soloing by the band members, that was not present on the much more concise studio versions of these compositions, and allows a rare glimpse at the atmosphere prevailing at the Old Place, which was London´s melting pot of all things Jazz related, side by side with the Little Theatre Club run by drummer John StevensFind albums by this artist. As someone who was lucky to witness that period at first hand, I must admit that the fifty years that passed since have not managed to erase the intensity of the magic that was in the air and the feeling that a completely new music was being born right in front of your eyes (and ears).
The album is accompanied by informative liner notes by Westbrook and others and is also a tribute to John JackFind albums by this artist, the omnipresent man behind the British Jazz scene and founder of CadillacFind albums on this label Records, who sadly departed in September 2017.
The sound quality of the recording is not ideal, but is certainly good enough to faithfully reconstruct the atmosphere of the concert and enable us to enjoy the music, as it was performed. The fact that this music was recorded at all and survived fifty years of storage is another miracle. We are all very lucky that this recording was unearthed and will be now preserved for posterity.
Of course this is an absolute must for all British Jazz enthusiasts and Westbrook followers!

  | HARRY BECKETT ~ JOY UNLIMITED CADILLAC 017 (Barcode: 5020675572485) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock-World Fusion Recorded: 1974 Released: 2020
This is a reissue / remaster of a classic album by British Jazz trumpeter / composer / bandleader Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist, recorded with a sextet, with also included keyboardist Brian MillerFind albums by this artist, guitarist Ray RussellFind albums by this artist, bassist Daryl RunswickFind albums by this artist, drummer Nigel MorrisFind albums by this artist and percussionist Martin DavidFind albums by this artist. The album presents six original compositions, all by Beckett.
This long overdue reissue was prompted by the publication of Beckett’s biography “The Many Faces of Harry Beckett” by John ThurlowFind albums by this artist, who also wrote the new liner notes, which are featured on the album’s artwork, in addition to the original liner notes by John FordhamFind albums by this artist. The album, which was Beckett’s fourth release as a leader, was released by the small independent CadillacFind albums on this label Records label established by John JackFind albums by this artist in 1973, and which subsequently released several iconic British Jazz recordings, some of which are still waiting for a reissue.
The music on this album is quite different from Beckett’s earlier recordings, which were more within the modern mainstream Jazz idiom. This album is however pure Jazz-Rock Fusion with some World Music influences, mostly rhythmically. In addition to Beckett’s brilliant trumpet parts, the rest of the instrumental work is highly charged by the electric guitar and keyboards, which take the music towards the British Fusion, which flourished at the time.
Russell, Miller and Runswick play some highly exciting soli throughout the album, which could be easily associated with the Fusion bands active at the time, like IsotopeFind albums by this artist, Rock WorkshopFind albums by this artist, IfFind albums by this artist and many others. With the Latin / Caribbean rhythms added, this album is certainly quite unique and in retrospect deserves a much wider recognition than it managed to achieve.
Overall, this is a classic British Jazz gem, worthy a proper place in any serious record collection. It should also be quite educational for the new generation of musicians, showing how cross-pollination and genre-crossing can lead to magnificent results, not to mention the respect due to all these wonderful musicians, who proved there are no limits to creativity. This is an absolute must of course and thanks to John’s initiative to make it available again, which he is practicing on the daily basis by running the Jazz In BritainFind albums on this label reissues label.

  | JOY ~ JOY CADILLAC 022 (Barcode: 5020675000377) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1976 Released: 2023
This is a reissue of the only album by the British Jazz quintet JoyFind albums by this artist, which comprised of trumpeter Jim DvorakFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Chris FrancisFind albums by this artist, pianist Frank RobertsFind albums by this artist, bassist Ernest MothleFind albums by this artist and drummer Keith BaileyFind albums by this artist. The original album, with nine tracks, was remastered and expanded by four bonus tracks, one of which was not included on the original album and three are alternate takes. Two of the original tracks were extended to their full-length versions, since they were edited to fit on the original LP.
I have heard Joy performing many times at London’s pubs before the album was released and a friendship between Chris and his lovely wife Penny and myself (and later my wife) soon developed, which led to quite frequent meetings whenever I / we visited London thereafter, staying at their house, which was right on the Putney Bridge. Against all odds, we are still in touch and Chris and Penny are the only people in the entire world that have sent us a Christmas / New Year’s Greeting cards every single year in the last almost 50 years.
Joy was an incredible band in every respect. They had among their ranks brilliant musicians and composers, with plenty of new original material to be played at all times. They were multi-cultural and cross-genre before these idioms were even coined, with musical influences including African Music, American Bebop and British modernism and most importantly they always played as if there was no tomorrow.
Although John JackFind albums by this artist of CadillacFind albums on this label Records recognized their talents and released the album, they never achieved the recognition they truly deserved and by the end of the 1970s Joy disbanded. I always wondered why the album was not reissued earlier on, but better late than never, with my personal gratitude to Mike GavinFind albums by this artist, who now takes care of the Cadillac catalogue, it is finally available again.
Overall, this is a true “lost” gem of the British Jazz, recorded at the peak of its most productive period by the mid-1970s. The album is exploding with true musical joy and inventiveness, energy and talent. It lost absolutely nothing of its relevance over time, and captures some of the magical spirit of British Jazz at its core. Obviously, this is an essential item in every serious British Jazz album collection, which I am sure all the dedicated fans of the genre will grab with a big smile on their faces.
