FRANK FOSTER / SWR BIG BAND ~ A FRESH TASTE OF THAD JONES AND FRANK FOSTER HANSSLER CLASSIC 4010276018582 (Barcode: 4010276018582) ~ USA ~ Big Band Jazz Recorded: 1994 - 1996 Released: 2006 This is a wonderful Jazz Big Band album by American saxophonist / flautist / composer / arranger / bandleader Frank FosterFind albums by this artist, recorded with the brilliant German SWR Big BandFind albums by this artist during his two residencies as guest conductor in 1994 and 1996. The album presents eleven tracks, seven of which are compositions by Foster and four are compositions by Thad JonesFind albums by this artist. Foster succeeded Jones as the leader of the legendary Count Basie OrchestraFind albums by this artist in 1986 and continued to lead it until 1995, creating some of the definite late American Big Band sound. The album pays tribute to Jones and that Big Band tradition. Foster solos on most of the tracks and his warm sound is immediately recognizable. Of course the European musicians have no problem with tackling the material with ease and elegance. One is of course immediately tempted to compare the sound on this album, and other albums by German Big Bands like the NDR Big BandFind albums by this artist or HR Big BandFind albums by this artist, with their American counterparts. This album is particularly interesting due to the presence of American conductor and strictly American material, which are still unable the close the conceptual gap between European and American Big Band sound, which comes down to the difference between a collection of individuals as opposed of a one multi-headed body making music. Overall, this is an interesting mixture of American and European Jazz Big Band, brilliantly played by everybody involved and featuring Foster as the main soloist and conductor. Lovers of the genre should have a field day with this, sadly little know album, which is definitely worth being discovered!

HANK JONES ~ HAVE YOU MET THIS JONES? MPS 4029759097310 (Barcode: 4029759097310) ~ USA ~ Jazz Recorded: 1977 Released: 2014 This is a reissue of a little known album by American pianist Hank JonesFind albums by this artist, the oldest of the three famous Jones Brothers (Thad, Elvin and Hank) recorded with a trio with also included Swiss bassist Isla EckingerFind albums by this artist and German drummer Kurt BongFind albums by this artist. The album was recorded in Germany for the MPSFind albums on this label label and produced by Hans Georg Brunner-SchwerFind albums by this artist. It presents eight tracks, one of which is an original composition by Hank Jones, one is by his brother Thad JonesFind albums by this artist and the remaining six are standards. Jones was famous for his delicate touch and superb feel, which made him one of the most sought after accompanists by Jazz vocalists like Ella FitzgeraldFind albums by this artist and many others, but played Bebop and may other forms of Jazz with the same ease and elegance. This date finds him playing mainstream Jazz with his typical finesse and in a very relaxed atmosphere. For classic Jazz piano trio lovers this is heaven on earth, especially in view of the excellent sonic quality this album offers. Although Jones recorded many albums during his long career, this is one of very few albums he recorded with a European rhythm section, and therefore a rare opportunity to investigate of the influence of these players on his performance. This forgotten little gem is definitely worth being discovered! Side Note The legendary German MPSFind albums on this label (Musik Produktion Schwarzwald) label, founded by Hans Georg Brunner-SchwerFind albums by this artist (HGBS) in 1963, first as SABAFind albums on this label Records and later on from 1968 as MPS Records, was the most important independent European record label, which had an enormous contribution to the development of European Jazz. For many years MPS cooperated with the legendary German producer / author Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, my Friend and Mentor, whose visionary approach and open-mindedness brought the crème de la crème of the Jazz (in the broadest meaning of the word) musicians from all over the world to the label. Between 1963 and 1983 MPS produced about five hundred albums, many of which are among the most important Jazz recordings on this planet. In 1983 the MPS catalog was sold to UniversalFind albums on this label, which sadly resulted in all those artistic treasures to almost disappear from the face of the earth – a situation not only tragic but culturally criminal. Universal reissued a part of the MPS albums (probably 128 titles) on CD between 1999 and 2011 under the "Most Perfect Sound Edition" moniker. Since 2008 the German Promising MusicFind albums on this label label released some of the MPS recordings, but at a very slow pace. In 2014 the German company Edel AG bought the MPS catalogue from Universal and released a series of 25 MPS albums on CD with a new slipcase graphic design, which brought all those excellent albums back to life. In 2015 Edel AG started to record and release new albums under the MPS moniker. In 2016 Edel AG released a series of 10 classic MPS albums on CD, which were beautifully remastered and re-packaged, presenting the original artwork and liner notes, as well as new liner notes and photographs. An obvious labor of love, these reissues are what the MPS catalogue truly deserves. This project was continued in 2017 with another series of 10 classic MPS albums released on CD. In later years some new reissues were released sporadically. Over the years many SABA / MPS albums were reissued in Japan, which is often the only available source for these albums today, but that is a story in itself.

CD 1 Slipcase Remastered Recommend To A Friend

THAD JONES ~ MAD THAD / OLIO VOCALION 5307 (Barcode: 765387530723) ~ USA ~ Jazz Recorded: 1957 Released: 2009 US trumpeter / composer Thad JonesFind albums by this artist (a member of the extensive Jones clan, which includes Quincy, Jimmy, Jo, Eddie and Thad´s younger brother Elvin) paid his dues in full on the NY scene, playing with the American who´s who of Jazz. His unique lyrical tone and his great feel for melody made him one of the greatest trumpeters of his time. This excellent reissue brings back to life two lovely recordings from the late 1950s, featuring Jones as a soloist in front of superb ensembles, which include such famous names as Frank FosterFind albums by this artist (sax) Frank WessFind albums by this artist (sax and flute) Tommy FlanaganFind albums by this artist (piano), Mal WaldronFind albums by this artist (piano) and many others. Although his most famous moments would come only about a decade later, when Jones was to co-lead one of the best ever Big Bands with drummer Mel LewisFind albums by this artist, these recordings show him in a more intimate setting, which emphasizes his excellent skills as a player and improviser. I had a real fun listening to these albums (which were out of circulation for ages), a reminder of times when life was simpler and music better. Recommended!

For specialist in Jazz Trunk Records have some incredible offers, like this incredible privately recorded album from 1968, which includes the music by Jonathan KleinFind albums by this artist – a seventeen years old youth at the time, performed by an incredible ensemble of leading American Jazz players: trumpeter Thad JonesFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Jerome RichardsonFind albums by this artist, pianist Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist, bassist Ron CarterFind albums by this artist and drummer Grady TateFind albums by this artist. Klein plays French horn and is the last member of the sextet. The music was conceived to be performed at a synagogue and was accompanied by singers singing verses from the Bible. Musically it is an incredible piece of modern Jazz, performed by the best musicians at the time. But the album is so completely obscure, that none of the discographies of the Jazz Giants involved lists it. So, as Jonny himself puts it, "Hallelujah", prize the Lord for making such a recording at the time and now having it back in circulation! Incredibly wonderful stuff!

THELONIOUS MONK ~ THE COMPLETE COLUMBIA LIVE ALBUMS COLLECTION SONY 886979958029 (Barcode: 886979958029) ~ USA ~ Jazz Recorded: 1963 - 1969 Released: 2015 This phenomenal Box Set includes all the live albums recorded by the iconic Jazz Master, pianist / composer Thelonious MonkFind albums by this artist, and released on ColumbiaFind albums on this label Records. It comprises of five 2CD sets, with each of the sets presenting complete / expanded versions of albums, which originally included only parts of the recorded concerts and often were spread over more than one album. This set finally sorts out all the confusion about these recordings and puts things in their correct order and placement, and therefore is a truly momentous documentation of Monk´s work. Most of this amazing music was recorded within just two years, namely in 1963 and 1964, with just a few additional tracks recorded live at various locations between 1965 and 1969, which were originally part of the soundtrack of the documentary movie "Thelonious Monk: Straight No Chaser". Considering the fact that this music was recorded basically within a very concise period of time, the basic material, i.e. the compositions used, is quite repetitive and some compositions are repeated several times (for example "Epistrophy" is performed thirteen times), which might have been a drawback but in fact turns out to be a blessing which allows us plainly to witness the Monk genius, with each and every version of the tune being different from every other version. The meaning of improvisation and the limitless power of the human mind are reflected within these sounds and captured for posterity. Overall this Box Set contains so much absolutely brilliant music that it weight could be measured in pure gold. There are no dull moments herein whatsoever and every note tells the story of Jazz and the prodigious talent of the Monk phenomenon, which knows no equals. It is a Bible of music, which should be studied by all those who call themselves Jazz musicians, and revered by Jazz fans of all ages. Hopefully this Box Set will expose this brilliant music to new generations of listeners the world over. Obviously this Box Set should become an essential part of every serious music collection, as it is eternal and timeless and will stay so as long as music matters.

The music is a divine example of early Jazz-World Fusion, with brilliant and intricate orchestral arrangements, which were completely different from what the usual American Orchestral Jazz sounded like. The sophistication and wild imagination that Pascoal incorporated in his music amazed the American musicians who were exposed to it, including Miles DavisFind albums by this artist, who regarded Pascoal as a musical genius, and rightly so. The album sounds amazingly fresh and contemporary, despite the fact that it is more than five decades old, and still offers today much to be learned from, not to mention of course an exquisite listening experience, full of sublime melodic themes, typical Brazilian touches and superb soloing by the players. Overall, this is a true classic Jazz-World Fusion album, which deserves to be heard and remembered, and which offers exceedingly original musical approach to orchestral Jazz. It is great to see the album available again, and hopefully it will be discovered by new generations of listeners. Personally I just can’t get enough of this music, with the CD playing on “repeat” mode. Kudos to Far Out Recordings for bringing this gem back to life!
