PIOTR ORZECHOWSKI ~ EXPERIMENT: PENDERECKI
DECCA 028948101023 (Barcode: 028948101023) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 2012 Released: 2012

This is a stunning debut album by Polish Jazz pianist Piotr OrzechowskiFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. PianohooliganFind albums by this artist), a twenty two years old prodigy, who managed to take the local scene by storm and win respect and admiration even from the top echelons of the "serious" classical Masters, like the celebrated Polish composer Krzysztof PendereckiFind albums by this artist, one of the world´s greatest contemporary classical composers.

Orzechowski recorded and privately released a demo album a year earlier, which featured his solo piano performances of his compositions, as well as his interpretations of several classical compositions. He took this idea even further with this project, his formal debut release, by presenting a series of solo piano interpretations of music composed by Penderecki, after approaching the Maestro and receiving his blessing and cooperation.

The resulting music is a triumphant amalgamation of Penderecki´s lofty music and Orzechowski´s earthy improvisations, mixing elements of romanticism, Jazz, Avant-Garde and classical modernism. There is an element of youthful rebellion and attitude in Orzechowski approach, as evident by the amount of freedom he allows himself while interpreting Penderecki´s music, which although modernist and even Avant-Garde, is after all formalized by being composed in a most precise manner. I´m especially glad to see the Maestro approving this approach, which shows his open-mindedness and love of musical diversity.

This music is way beyond virtuosity, although of course the artist is a bona fide virtuoso; it is first and foremost about creating art, using whatever gift that was bestowed upon you, and Orzechowski is indeed blessed by many gifts. There is his vision and imagination, which made him to conceive such project in the first place, an incredible courage to deal with an iconic figure like Penderecki, the commitment to carry the project out and the aptitude to actually pull it through. All this, mind you, by a twenty two years old human being in a world where others of his age spend their lives twiddling cell phones.

Personally this album is a beacon of hope for people like me, who see what they consider as Culture disappearing into a black void. This is not only culture, but an artistic "haute couture" which deserves to be admired and almost religiously followed. Performed on acoustic and electric (Rhodes) piano, the music was beautifully recorded in Switzerland and eventually released on the prestigious classical Decca label, owned by Universal, a clear sign of recognition of Orzechowski´s incredible talents. I´d guess he is one of the youngest, if not the youngest artists ever, who recorded for the label.

I have been lucky and honored to be privy to this music from the moment it was created a few months ago when it was sent to me by the artists, asking for my opinion. I forwarded him my warmest support and encouraged him to seek the proper home for his music, which he eventually found. Hopefully this release will trigger international attention and recognition, which this album and its creator so much deserve. A masterpiece!

PIOTR ORZECHOWSKI ~ 24 PRELUDES & IMPROVISATIONS
DECCA 028948164011 (Barcode: 028948164011) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 2016 Released: 2017

This is a monumental solo piano album (2 CDs) by the Polish pianist / composer Piotr OrzechowskiFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. PianohooliganFind albums by this artist), which presents twenty four preludes composed by him, each of them followed by an improvisation connected to the prelude; altogether forty eight short pieces of music, sequenced in the order of the chromatic scale from C major to B minor. This is Orzechowski´s fourth album for the Classical DeccaFind albums on this label label, which consistently and faithfully supports his career.

The music beautifully portrays the two faces of Orzechowski´s musical personality, rooted on one side in Classical Music ranging between Johann Sebastian BachFind albums by this artist and Krzysztof PendereckiFind albums by this artist and on the opposite side in Jazz and Improvisation. Although perfectly capable to stand on its own, this music is much better understood when seen (or rather heard) in the full scope of Orzechowski´s recordings, as presented on the abovementioned Decca albums.

But even for a person completely unaware of Orzechowski´s background and recording legacy, it should be immediately apparent that this is a great Artist at work, both as a composer and as a performer. The scope of his imagination, intelligence, musical depth and aesthetic perfection is evident in every one of these forty eight miniatures. Listening to this music is a deep, almost spiritual experience, which should leave no music lover indifferent.

In spite of the seemingly serious and complex exterior of this music it is wondrously accessible to every open-minded listener, way beyond hard core Classical or Jazz listeners. The beauty of this music wins the listener over almost immediately and the fact that these pieces are short and diverse completely excludes any chance of boredom or tiredness. Personally I found this music so fascinating that the entire double album seemed to last but a few short moments to me.

This music is immensely multilayered. It can be experiences on its exterior layer, but it can also be probed into the inner layers, which reveal intricate complexities in both the composed preludes and the improvised pieces. As such this music should require repeated listening sessions to be explored in depth.

Overall this is a masterpiece of contemporary Polish music, which proudly represents the incredibly high level of musical creativity and talent, which many young Polish composers and musicians are blessed with. For people unfamiliar with the treasures of Polish Music, this album could be a wonderful window into what is happening in Poland today. Brilliant stuff!

CAMEL ~ THE SNOW GOOSE (DELUXE EDITION)
DECCA 5314614 (Barcode: 600753146149) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1975 Released: 2009

One of the most impressive Prog concept albums of all times, CamelFind albums by this artist´s 3rd album remains a beacon shading its light up to this very day upon the desolated shores of today´s music. Brilliantly composed, orchestrated and performed, this subtle music symbolizes everything that was the great musical eruption, which happened in the early 1970s. Completely disregarding any commercial influences, the band and mainly the two members, who composed this magnificent music, keyboardist Peter BardensFind albums by this artist and guitarist Andy LatimerFind albums by this artist showed that music has no boundaries and ambition and talent are rewarded in the long run. Bassist Doug FergusonFind albums by this artist and drummer Andy WardFind albums by this artist support the two soloists with taste and passion and the entire piece immediately achieved the status of a timeless classic. As with all works of substance, in retrospect the music still sounds uplifting and inspiring 34 years later with no trace of getting outdated. This new edition adds bonus material and a whole second CD with live recordings done for the BBC, an endless source of historic material. Simply outstanding and an essential piece of music history!

Following the brilliant "The Snow GooseFind albums with this title" album, CamelFind albums by this artist´s 4th album proved to be another masterpiece, considered by many to be the absolute highlight of their entire career. Although not a concept album as such, the individual songs have a loose conceptual underling and the musical unity is truly remarkable. The material, written as usual by keyboardist Peter BardensFind albums by this artist and guitarist Andy LatimerFind albums by this artist, is wonderfully coherent, melodic and highly emotional, with ample space for extended instrumental passages. BRIAN WILSON ~ AT MY PIANO
DECCA 602438500383 (Barcode: 602438500383) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 2021 Released: 2021

This is a solo piano album by American Pop / Rock songwriter Brian WilsonFind albums by this artist, which presents new interpretations of fifteen of his most famous songs composed over the years.

People familiar with Wilson’s brilliant songwriting will of course recognize these tunes immediately, while these new, very delicate and often subdued interpretations presents a somewhat nostalgic look at his impressive career, emphasizing his wonderful sense of melody.

The album offers a simple, room quality sound rather that a fancy concert hall ambience, which adds to the charm and intimacy of the whole affair. Obviously each listener will hear in parallel to these solo piano pieces his own memories as they were recorded by The Beach BoysFind albums by this artist, creating an individual mixture of reality and subconscious music memories.

Although it might seem a tad vain to play a tribute to himself, Wilson certainly deserves some slack and our respect and admiration for his contribution to music over the years, which had only a very few equals.

Overall, this is a wonderful trip down the memory lane, which inspires splendid memories of superb musical peaks Wilson deserves a credit for, in view of his unique talent as a songweaver of the highest order. Absolutely delightful!

The debut album by British group Small FacesFind albums by this artist is a fascinating glimpse at a period in music history, when rapid developments in Music transformed simple elements of early popular music into sophisticated artistic expressions, a journey which most of the musicians involved made often completely subconsciously. The recordings included herein are a time capsule, luckily preserved by the recording technology, documenting this process for one particular group, but they are characteristic of the entire generation in UK and all over the world. Small Faces were definitely one of the best British groups emerging in the mid-1960, although the rate of their success was significantly less spectacular than many of their contemporaries. Nevertheless the group managed to produce some brilliant Pop / Psychedelic gems in the relatively short period of time they existed, which are part of the Pop / Rock Pantheon and will stay there forever. ORZECHOWSKI / MASECKI ~ BACH REWRITE
DECCA 602537545759 (Barcode: 602537545759) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 2013 Released: 2013

This is definitely one of the most intriguing albums released in Poland in 2013; a completely cross-genre innovative project, which should interest a wide range of music connoisseurs. It combines the eternal music of Johann Sebastian BachFind albums by this artist with two Polish enfants terribles: pianist / composer Piotr OrzechowskiFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. PianohooliganFind albums by this artist) and pianist / composer Marcin MaseckiFind albums by this artist, usually associated with Avant-Garde Polish Jazz but also know to have flirted with Classical music, contemporary and otherwise. Orzechowski included a Bach prelude on his debut demo album in 2011 and then shook up the Polish music scene in 2012 with the album presenting his interpretations of the music by the celebrated Polish composer Krzysztof PendereckiFind albums by this artist. Masecki performed and recorded many times his interpretations of Classical music pieces earlier on and even recorded in 2012 a complete album covering Bach´s "Die Kunst Der Fuge". Therefore this meeting is not really as surprising, as it might appear at the first glance.

The pianists perform three Bach concerti for harpsichord, strings & continuo; each performs one concerto and together they perform a double concerto for two harpsichords. They are accompanied by the Capella CracoviensisFind albums by this artist Orchestra conducted by Jan Tomasz AdamusFind albums by this artist, which specializes in performing early Classical music played on original instruments of the period. The "catch" is that rather than using the harpsichord as intended, Orzechowski uses the Fender Rhodes electric piano and Masecki uses the Wurlitzer electric piano.

Other than the effect of hearing an electric piano accompanied by a Baroque orchestra the album sounds pretty straightforward / "normal" and almost conventional. The big surprises are hidden almost at the very end of each of the concerti, when the pianists perform a "solo" / free improvised section, which of course is not a part of the original concerti (in the double concerto they perform this section together as a duo). This bold and innovative idea is what adds an extra "spark" to what this album offers to its listeners. There is of course also the a.m. disparity between the electric pianos and the orchestra, but after a while it simply vanishes and Bach´s music heals this gap quite naturally.

Both pianists and the orchestra perform their roles formidably and the overall effect is pleasing, but not overwhelming. The entire project turns out to be less innovative / challenging that one might expect. The short improvised passages are somewhat alien to the music at large and appear to be more "conceptual" than natural. The orchestra is absolutely perfect and the worm sound of the instruments is a true delight. The sound quality is acceptable, but not sensational. Summa summarum this is a pleasant, interesting album, which tries to bring Bach´s music into contemporary environment, which is always commendable. It is not, however, a major / revolutionary concept / achievement.

Side Note: The author of the liner notes accompanying this album keeps rumbling on and on about Wendy CarlosFind albums by this artist´ 1968 album "Switched-On BachFind albums with this title", which was a first of its kind recording of Classical music performed on a Moog synthesizer. I completely fail to see any connection whatsoever between that album and the music included herein. Although innovative, "Switched-On Bach" was after all just a gimmick intended to sell records, which worked very well BTW. Any attempt to uplift its status to a significant masterpiece is simply ridiculous as it connecting it with this album.

STEFANO BOLLANI ~ SHEIK YER ZAPPA
DECCA 602547051523 (Barcode: 602547051523) ~ ITALY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2011 Released: 2014

This is a live album by Italian pianist / composer Stefano BollaniFind albums by this artist, recorded with his quintet comprising of American musicians: vibraphonist Jason AdasiewiczFind albums by this artist, trombonist Josh RosemanFind albums by this artist, bassist Larry GrenadierFind albums by this artist and drummer Jim BlackFind albums by this artist. As the title suggests, the album is a tribute to the Genius of Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist and was recorded during the quintet’s 2011 tour. The album presents nine tracks, six of which were composed by Zappa, two are by Bollani and one is co-composed by Bollani and Adasiewicz. The album offers a brilliant authentic sound quality.

The music is absolutely brilliant, not only because the strength of the original material by Zappa, but no less importantly because the zany approach by Bollani and his cohorts, who all seem to have an absolute blast performing it and approach it with obvious joy and intellectual freedom. Of course Zappa fans will recognize the original pieces, but they are all treated with a lot of liberty and humor, which add to the experience. I am pretty sure Zappa would have approved wholeheartedly to the whole affair.

Personally I am not objective of course, as I admire everything Zappa related, but it is such a pleasure to see that musicians of the statue of Bollani love and respect his music as well. I am pretty sure that every Zappa fan will love this project, especially those more Jazz oriented ones, but strangely enough this album is relatively completely unknown and it took me years to discover it. Well, better late than never, as they say, and now I can enjoy it and recommend it to Zappa fanatics, and beyond. This album is quite an eye (ear) opener!

Overall, this is a wonderful piece of music, paying a tribute to the greatest American musical Genius of the 20th Century, a visionary and a prophet. These Jazzy arrangements do not go far beyond Zappa’s Jazziest efforts, so sold fans will welcome them instinctively, and if any innocent bystanders get hooked as well, it’s all for the best!

PIOTR ORZECHOWSKI ~ 15 STUDIES FOR THE OBEREK
DECCA 602547119124 (Barcode: 602547119124) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 2014 Released: 2014

Polish pianist / composer Piotr OrzechowskiFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. PianohooliganFind albums by this artist) returns with the annual (third time in a row) display of his musical vision, which hovers above the usual genre definitions, practically ignoring all conventions and boundaries and creates his own unique musical universe. This time the theme of his explorations is the Polish folk dance called oberek, which is the most lively and least restricted of the Polish folk dances and therefore also the most open to interpretation or even improvisation. The album presents fifteen relatively short solo piano pieces, called "studies" organized into five series of three pieces each. Each of the series has its own subtitle and focuses on a different aspect of the dance. The music is magnificently recorded at the Polish Radio´s Concert Studio in Warsaw with Ewa Guziolek-TubelewiczFind albums by this artist presiding at the console.

Of course in this case, the oberek is more of an inspiration or a point of reference, rather than an actual source, as usual with Orzechowski, whose multi-dimensional compositional concept expands well beyond the actual structure of the dance. Listeners not familiar with the oberek might of course never recognize the subtle references, but that should not diminish in any way the aesthetic elegance of this music in any way, as it obviously has a life of its own regardless of its inspiration.

It would be superfluous to sing the paeans about Orzechowski´s talents both as a composer and performer, which have already seen the light of day both in my previous reviews of his work and countless other critiques. In his case, which is very rare indeed, the general acceptance of his virtues is not a sign of blind public hysteria but a true admiration of his qualities. With this album he manages, yet again, to surprise, excite and move the listener, which is probably the greatest gift an Artist is blessed with. All we can do is to express our gratitude.

For the third time in a row an album by Orzechowski is one of the best albums released in Poland in a particular year (2014 in this case), which is simply unprecedented. Chapeau Maestro!

JOHN MAYALL ~ BLUES FROM LAUREL CANYON (EXPANDED EDITION)
DECCA 840839 (Barcode: 602498408391) ~ UK ~ Blues

Recorded: 1968 Released: 2007

9th album by John MayallFind albums by this artist, and his most personal and intimate statement to date. Following the decision to disband the Bare WiresFind albums with this title version of the BluesbreakersFind albums by this artist Mayall immediately formed a new quartet, retaining only Mick TaylorFind albums by this artist from the previous group and adding two exceptional young musicians: Steve ThompsonFind albums by this artist on bass and Colin AllenFind albums by this artist on drums.

The material for the new album was written during Mayall’s vacation in California, where he stayed in the Laurel Canyon near LA, a favorite living area of many US musicians. During his stay Mayall met and socialized with fellow musicians, such as members of the blues band Canned HeatFind albums by this artist and Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist and his Mothers Of InventionFind albums by this artist, and even dedicated two of the songs on the album to them.

The entire album was designed as a one continuous flow of music, with one song smoothly leading into another without any breaks. The magic atmosphere is completely unique and the complex and subtle musical themes make it one of the most remarkable albums recorded in the 1960s. In many respects this album was an end of a phase in Mayall’s long musical road.

It was the last album on DeccaFind albums on this label (he would sign with PolydorFind albums on this label next), the last purely UK based album (he would play with many US musicians later on and eventually move to live in the US), the last of the pure blues albums (the next phase would be much more jazz influenced). In retrospect the John Mayall Decca recordings are one of the greatest documents of the 1960s UK music scene and an everlasting, timeless source of musical inspiration. Essential!

JOHN MAYALL ~ THE DIARY OF A BAND (EXPANDED EDITION)
DECCA 841804 (Barcode: 602498418048) ~ UK ~ Blues

Recorded: 1967 Released: 2007

6th & 7th albums by John MayallFind albums by this artist and his BluesbreakersFind albums by this artist, which were actually a double album released on two separate LPs as The Diary Of A Band Vol.1 & Vol.2 (as DeccaFind albums on this label thought that releasing a double album was too bold a step at the time). The material was recorded live during a European tour, which followed the release of CrusadeFind albums with this title and was captured on a simple reel to reel tape machine, which Mayall placed on the stage during all the concerts. Over 60 hours of music were recorded, of which two hours were selected for the release. The Bluesbreakers’ lineup was similar to that which recorded Crusade except for the new brass section man, the fantastic Dick Heckstall-SmithFind albums by this artist on tenor and soprano sax (later ColosseumFind albums by this artist) and the bass position, which was occupied by either Paul WilliamsFind albums by this artist or Keith TillmanFind albums by this artist. The enclosed music is a superb document of the era and one of the most authentic glimpses at the music scene of the late 1960s, as it includes some spoken word and commentary on the performances, caught right at the time when they happened. Mick TaylorFind albums by this artist plays some amazing guitar licks here, as does Dick Heckstall-Smith, especially when he blows both of his horns simultaneously. The entire album is one great trip down the nostalgia lane and the only pity is that all of it was never captured on video (which did not exist at the time unfortunately). I can’t imagine any blues fan not wanting this in his music library.

His extraordinary technique and superb feel for the blues made him an ideal partner for Mayall. JOHN MAYALL ~ PLAYS JOHN MAYALL (EXPANDED EDITION)
DECCA 984177 (Barcode: 602498417799) ~ UK ~ Blues

Recorded: 1964 - 1965 Released: 2006

1st album by the hero of my youth and to this date one of my very favorite musicians of all times. John MayallFind albums by this artist is the absolute Godfather of British blues. Since the early 1960s he’s led a streak of blues groups, called The BluesbreakersFind albums by this artist, which were a breeding ground for entire generations of future blues and rock superstars. If the names of Peter GreenFind albums by this artist, Eric ClaptonFind albums by this artist, Aynsley DunbarFind albums by this artist, John McVieFind albums by this artist and Keef HartleyFind albums by this artist (to mention just a very few of his alumni) mean anything to you than you can understand his importance. But Mayall is far more than a bandleader. He plays many instruments and writes superb melodies, some of which are amongst the best blues songs ever written. And of course he sings the blues like nobody else. Mayall not only deeply loves the blues, but he understands it probably more than anybody else, which made it possible for him to expand the art of blues way beyond its original form. Thank God he keeps doing it now for over 50 years – a truly remarkable man and an unprecedented career. This album is a live recording at the London’s Klooks Kleek club (a famous meeting place for UK blues musicians). Mayall and his Bluesbreakers perform a brilliant set of songs, composed all by Mayall and this is one of the best examples of how the British blues revival crystallized around that period. Although this music was recorded over 40 years ago, it sounds remarkably fresh and up-to-date, losing nothing of its charm and beauty. Every John Mayall album is an absolute must for any blues fan, this one especially so for its added historical value.

JOHN MAYALL ~ BLUESBREAKERS WITH ERIC CLAPTON (DELUXE EDITION)
DECCA 984180 (Barcode: 602498418017) ~ UK ~ Blues

Recorded: 1965 - 1966 Released: 2006

2nd album by John MayallFind albums by this artist and his Bluesbreakers, which features Eric ClaptonFind albums by this artist as the lead guitarist and sadly the only album they recorded together at the time. Of course this is the definitive white blues album of all times, with an incisive impact not only on Clapton’s stairway to the “Godly” status of Emperor of all guitar players, but also on the entire music scene, basically establishing the electric Blues (and later Blues / Rock) as the natural and legitimate next step from American-born acoustic blues. This album influenced (and still influences) generations of guitar players of all genres and changed the face of music probably more than any single album did beforehand. It is pretty ironic (at least in retrospect) that Clapton left the YardbirdsFind albums by this artist, accusing the band of becoming to “commercial” following the release of the “For Your Love” single (which by the way was quite revolutionary and groundbreaking as it is), to pursue a “pure” blues oriented music with Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, only to leave a few month later to form CreamFind albums by this artist, which became one of the most successful Rock bands in history. Life is full of surprises! Nevertheless during his stint with Mayall, Clapton managed single-handedly to shape the future of Rock, producing some of the most memorable sounds ever. Speaking of sound, Clapton’s US-made Gibson Les Paul combined with the British Marshall amplifiers produced a sound so unique that it was to be imitated by hordes of axe players around the world for decades. Of course Clapton’s feel for the blues is undeniable, and his interpretation of the twelve bar music form, mixed with his rock background, created an embryo of a new musical Hydra. Mayall was of course ecstatic to have Clapton in his band, only to be utterly devastated when Clapton announced his departure soon after this album was recorded. Fortunately Mayall soon recovered and followed suit with another guitar hero – Peter GreenFind albums by this artist. This (long overdue) edition of this groundbreaking album collects virtually absolutely everything Mayall and Clapton managed to record together. The First CD includes both the original mono mix of the album and the stereo mix, which was done only three years later (1969). The second CD includes a plethora of singles, outtakes, BBC sessions and live recordings, many of which see the light of day for the first time. I am not a great fun of the “If you had to select only one single album…” idea, but this one does come as close to the idea as it is humanly possible. If you don’t own this album, this probably is the greatest hole in your collection (not to mention your music education). Hopefully not for long.

JOHN MAYALL ~ THE BLUES ALONE (EXPANDED EDITION)
DECCA 984180 (Barcode: 602498418055) ~ UK ~ Blues

Recorded: 1967 Released: 2006

5th album by John MayallFind albums by this artist, although it was in fact recorded shortly before CrusadeFind albums with this title (the 4th album) but released later on the DeccaFind albums on this label budget label Ace Of ClubsFind albums on this label. Mayall takes the ever so bold step here to face the music (or rather make it) alone, as well as supplying all the compositions. He sings and plays all the instruments and only some drum tracks are courtesy of Keef HartleyFind albums by this artist. His performance is as brilliant as ever, creating a unique document of the era. Mayall always wanted to record a solo album, but the confusion facing his band after his second lead guitarist left the band following the recording of only one album pushed him to make the album rather sooner that later. Regardless of the circumstances, Mayall manages to create another masterpiece, which is every bit as relevant as it was at the time of the recording. Wholeheartedly recommended!

JOHN MAYALL ~ A HARD ROAD (EXPANDED EDITION)
DECCA 9842225 (Barcode: 602498422250) ~ UK ~ Blues

Recorded: 1966 - 1967 Released: 2006

3rd album by John MayallFind albums by this artist and his BluesbreakersFind albums by this artist and one of the all time greatest blues albums ever recorded. Any band leader facing the crisis of his leading instrumentalist leaving the band (when Eric ClaptonFind albums by this artist left The Bluesbreakers after just one album to join Ginger BakerFind albums by this artist and Jack BruceFind albums by this artist to create CreamFind albums by this artist) would surely despair, but Mayall immediately found not only a replacement for Clapton but also a player of matching virtuosity and sublime feeling for the blues. The young Jewish boy named Peter Greenbaum, or Peter GreenFind albums by this artist as all of you may know him, was just the person and his performance on this album started an illustrious career of one of the blues greatest stars. Of course the other two musicians playing on this album (John McVieFind albums by this artist – bass and Aynsley DunbarFind albums by this artist – drums) were also heading for great musical ventures in the future. Unfortunately the Mayall / Green association was also destined to last for one solitary album (same as the Mayall / Clapton liaison), when Green left to form Fleetwood MacFind albums by this artist, soon to be replaced by another guitar hero Mick TaylorFind albums by this artist. The material includes mostly Mayall’s compositions, with Green contributing two of his tunes and a few blues standards. The level of performance is phenomenal and the 60s sound and production create a magic atmosphere making this an everlasting gem.
A special note to collectors:
The numerous bonus tracks on this album include the legendary EP recorded by Mayall and US blues giant Paul ButterfieldFind albums by this artist, which ranks amongst the rarest and most expensive collectors’ items on the vinyl market.

JOHN MAYALL ~ LIVE AT THE BBC
DECCA 984466 (Barcode: 602498446652) ~ UK ~ Blues

Recorded: 1965 - 1975 Released: 2007

As part of the splendid reissue series of the early John MayallFind albums by this artist and his BluesbreakersFind albums by this artist recordings, this album collects sessions made for the BBC, which are always a revelation and an important document of all UK artists’ output. Thanks to the UK Musicians’ Union agreement with the BBC, a vast number of recordings made on a regular basis documented over the years the development of the musical scene in the UK and many of these recordings are finding their rightful place on recent reissues. The bulk of the material on this album was recorded between 1965 and 1967 and features Eric ClaptonFind albums by this artist or Peter GreenFind albums by this artist as the lead guitarist. The last two tracks are from 1975 and were recorded for TV. Mayall was of course the most important protagonist of the UK blues movement and every piece of previously unheard material is an absolute treasure. Clapton’s and Green’s revolutionary guitar styles are a model for countless guitar players to this very day.
A special note to collectors:
Most of these tracks were included as bonus material on the Bluesbreakers With Eric Clapton (Deluxe Edition)Find albums with this title and A Hard Road (Expanded Edition)Find albums with this title reissues. Therefore this album is mostly for people who don’t own these reissues, or hard-core Mayall collectors.

MOODY BLUES ~ THE POLYDOR YEARS 1986-1992
POLYDOR 602537894147 (Barcode: 602537894147) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1986 - 1992 Released: 2014

This is a reissue / archival Box Set presenting the music recorded by the seminal British Pop / Rock band The Moody BluesFind albums by this artist between 1986 and 1992. The group enjoyed an enormous, both artistic and commercial, success between 1967 and 1972, with a stream of seven brilliant and innovative albums. A period of concentrating on solo projects between 1974 and 1977 ended, when the band reunited and released an album in 1978 followed by founding member vocalist / keyboardist Mike PinderFind albums by this artist leaving the band for good. The remaining four founding members: vocalist / guitarist Justin HaywardFind albums by this artist, vocalist / bassist John LodgeFind albums by this artist, vocalist / drummer Graeme EdgeFind albums by this artist and vocalist / multi-instrumentalist Ray ThomasFind albums by this artist were joined by ex-YesFind albums by this artist Swiss keyboardist Patrick MorazFind albums by this artist. They released two further albums for DeccaFind albums on this label, until the label was bought by PolydorFind albums on this label, where the story of this Box Set begins.

This Box set includes the remastered and expanded versions of the four albums The Moody Blues released on Polydor: “The Other Side Of LifeFind albums with this title” (1986), “Sur La MerFind albums with this title” (1988), “Keys Of The KingdomFind albums with this title” (1991) and finally the live album “A Night At Red RocksFind albums with this title” (1993) recorded in 1992 with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, expanded to two CDs. Also included is a live CD “The Other Side Of Life Tour”, as well as a DVD of “A Night At Red Rocks” and another DVD with the documentary “The Other Side Of Red Rocks” and finally a vinyl single – altogether six CDs, two DVDs and a vinyl single, a hardcover book with essays and photographs - quite a package indeed.

Although the music produced by The Moody Blues during this period is often dismissed by fans and critics alike, this is completely unjustified. They retained four of their founding members with their brilliant vocal harmonies and incredible songwriting talents and although the keyboards work by Moraz bears many of the dreaded 1980s synthesizer sound characteristics, it can be accepted as part of the time’s ambience.

Overall, this Box Set is an incredible time capsule and a loving tribute to one of the greatest Classic Rock bands of all time. It offers a remarkable opportunity to re-discover (or simply discover) this chapter in the band’s activity and witness a process of musician that are able to age well and remain productive. I had an unexpected fun to listen to this music, a joyous ride indeed!

2nd album by Scottish duo Bread, Love And DreamsFind albums by this artist, which included singer David McNivenFind albums by this artist, who also wrote most of the material, and female singer Angie RewFind albums by this artist. The group started originally as a trio with another female singer Carolyn DavisFind albums by this artist and they recorded their debut album a year earlier. After Carolyn left to pursue a solo career, the duo engaged in an extensive recording project, which produced enough material for a double album. Unfortunately the record label (DeccaFind albums on this label) refused to issue a double album (originally intended to be called “Mother Earth”) and as a result the first of the two was released under this title, taken from the title of the epic song included on the album, and the second a few month later as AmaryllisFind albums with this title. The duo was lucky to have some great musicians taking part in the recording sessions, namely PentangleFind albums by this artist’s rhythm section of Danny ThompsonFind albums by this artist on bass and Terry CoxFind albums by this artist on drums, as well as saxophonist Dick Heckstall-SmithFind albums by this artist from ColosseumFind albums by this artist. Some of the songs were also beautifully arranged and orchestrated. The resulting music is a prime example of British Folk-Rock with some Psychedelic influences as well. VOCALION 4281 (Barcode: 765387428129) ~ UK ~ Jazz

In parallel to his immensely important contributions in the Jazz field, British trumpeter Shake KeaneFind albums by this artist also recorded three crossover Jazz / Pop albums for the DeccaFind albums on this label label in the 1960s, which although being on the "lighter" side of things are still prime examples of his amazing tone and virtuosity. The remastered edition of the 1967 album "That`s The NoiseFind albums with this title" (the second of the three) was released on a separate album on the Vocalion label, and here are the other two. "With The Keating SoundFind albums with this title" form 1965 features Keane performing a great selection of Jazz standards, arranged and orchestrated by Johnny KeatingFind albums by this artist and accompanied by the gorgeous orchestra led by him. Keating´s orchestra, as many similar British orchestras at the time, included the best studio musicians, many of which were also active on the Jazz scene. "Dig It!Find albums with this title", from 1968, features Keane performing contemporary Pop material, again arranged and orchestrated for an orchestra, this time by Ivor RaymondeFind albums by this artist, and feature quite unusual approach to Pop material. Both albums are a great document of the great trumpeter´s genius, and of course include music, which stands the test of time quite well. Recommended for listeners who prefer the more melodic side of Jazz.

MICHAEL GARRICK ~ TROPPO
VOCALION 8444 (Barcode: 765387844424) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1973 Released: 2009

Pianist / composer Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist has been a pivotal figure in the British Jazz for over five decades and his recorded legacy over the years is an enormous source of inspiration and an example of intelligence, finesse and dedication. By the mid-1970s the British Jazz revolution was all but complete and the scene´s decade of glory was also nearing its end, with record sales declining. Therefore this album was to be the last recording Garrick made for the ArgoFind albums on this label label, a subsidiary of DeccaFind albums on this label. His ambition to push the music beyond the well established boundaries, with the music becoming more complex in the process, was a key factor in the company´s decision to cease the fruitful cooperation, which lasted for a decade and produced some of Britain´s best and most important Jazz masterpieces. Following the initial release of this album Garrick would almost completely stop releasing albums for over two decades, until he finally established his own independent Jazz AcademyFind albums on this label label and his output appeared there regularly since, to the delight of his many fans, myself included. The group playing on this recording consists mostly of Garrick´s long time cohorts and the British Jazz scene´s lions: Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist on trumpet and violin, Art ThemenFind albums by this artist on flute and sax, Don RendellFind albums by this artist on flute and sax, bassists Dave GreenFind albums by this artist and Coleridge GoodeFind albums by this artist and drummer Trevor TomkinsFind albums by this artist. The divine vocalist Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist was also an integral part of his band and her performances here are truly sensational. The album was recorded just a few weeks after the death of Joe HarriottFind albums by this artist, Garrick´s dear friend and music-making partner and the album includes a tribute to his genius. This has always been one of my favorite albums and surely one of British Jazz everlasting masterpieces, which remains an essential listening to this very day. Absolute must!
