  | AKINETÓN RETARD ~ 21 CANAPÉS MYLODON 014 (Barcode: 4011222210258) ~ CHILE ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1998 - 2003 Released: 2003
3rd album by the sensational Prog / RIO band from Chile Akinetón RetardFind albums by this artist. Quite an unusual album (even for them) as it collects (as the title suggests) 21 short pieces of music, most between 1 and 2 minutes long, which were originally written as background music for 3 theatre performances staged in 1998, 1999 and 2003. It is not stated on the album if the music was recorded at these respective dates (I assume so) or is a re-recording of all these pieces done in 2003 (there is one additional piece dated 2000). Regardless of this little confusion, the music is overall absolutely brilliant, as is everything else they ever recorded. The jazz undertones created by the two sax players in the group and the unusual melody lines take the listener to uncharted territory, which is always a good thing. The earlier influences of King CrimsonFind albums by this artist and Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist are less evident here, which means the group arrived at a point where they have their own unique tonal language well in place. The album differs also from their other output by being more acoustic (using guest musicians playing violin and cello or even vocals for example) and atmospheric at times, which is surely a result of the music being written for theatre. If one disregards all the background information, this album can be regarded as a beautiful example of contemporary “minimal music”, as good as anything created earlier in this genre. Essentially brilliant!

  | BAD COMPANY ~ BAD COMPANY (DELUXE EDITION) RHINO 081227955540 (Barcode: 081227955540) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1973 Released: 2015
This is a reissue of the debut eponymous album by the seminal British Blues-Rock / Rock supergroup Bad CompanyFind albums by this artist. Formed in 1973 by two former members of the legendary FreeFind albums by this artist, vocalist Paul RodgersFind albums by this artist and drummer Simon KirkeFind albums by this artist, who were joined by ex-Mott The HoopleFind albums by this artist guitarist Mick RalphsFind albums by this artist and ex-King CrimsonFind albums by this artist bassist Boz BurrellFind albums by this artist. The original lineup of the band managed to last for a whole decade, during which they recorded six studio albums. The original album included eight original songs, three by Ralphs, two by Rodgers, two by Rodgers and Ralphs and one by Rodgers and Kirke. This remastered edition adds a second CD full of bonus material (13 tracks), nine of which are previously unreleased, which include outtakes, alternate versions and B-sides, including studio chatter as well as intelligent and interesting booklet full of relevant information.
Bad Company were beyond a shadow of a doubt one of the all time best British Rock bands, which embodied the process of the development of the British Rock music, which has taken place during the 1960s and included the Blues Revival, the birth of Blues-Rock and Hard-Rock. The band was less Blues oriented than its ancestor bands, especially Free of course, but the basic Blues structures were still very much in place, especially so on the first two albums by the band.
Rodgers, who is the best white Blues vocalist that ever walked the face of the earth, sings Blues regardless of the specific environment he´s in at any specific moment. Whenever he opens his mouth, the Blues pours out, regardless if he means it or not, and this is of course his most important asset paired with his Godly voice. Bad Company allowed him to explore his talents as a singer and songwriter in a more comfortable environment than the turmoil surrounding Free during its troubled existence.
The combined forces of the four musicians that were Bad Company proved to be an ideal amalgam of talents and abilities, turning them into a well oiled and highly intelligent music machine that was simply perfect and unstoppable. There in not even one slack track on this entire album, including the CD with the bonuses. Rock perfection incarnate!
In retrospect this album joins the ranks of those essential classic albums, which will be standing on the pedestal of Rock´s achievements for as long as Rock itself will exist as a living musical form. Since they don´t make music like that any more, there is no danger of this music being replaced or forgotten any time soon, at least not as long as those who have been lucky to enjoy the bad company in real life.

  | BAD COMPANY ~ LIVE 1977 & 1979 RHINO 081227952334 (Barcode: 081227952334) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1977 - 1979 Released: 2016
This is an archival live album by the seminal British Rock supergroup Bad CompanyFind albums by this artist. The original lineup of the band managed to last for a whole decade, during which they recorded six studio albums, but not even one live album, which was highly unusual at the time. This album tries, albeit almost forty years later, to remedy the situation and presents two live shows by the band at its peak form, with the two recordings separated by almost two years, each presenting mostly songs from the albums released at the time, i.e. the first show with songs from "Burnin` SkyFind albums with this title", their fourth album released in 1977 and the second show with songs from "Desolation AngelsFind albums with this title", their fifth album released in 1979.
Bad Company was a formidable live act, as these recordings show, which explains the enormous popularity they enjoyed at the time. They are also a living proof that the basic Rock formula of vocals, lead and bass guitars and drums are completely enough to create vital and extraordinary music, without electronics and other artificial trickery. Rogers, as usual, is simply beyond comparison to any other vocalist at the time and in truth to this very day. The band did not change their musical formula for the entire duration of their existence, which was based on great tunes, often soaked with Blues sensitivity, performed with great skill and total involvement, but eschewing unnecessary pyrotechnics.
In many respects this album is a frozen memory of Rock´s last great moments, as the music was about to turn sour soon after with mindless Pop taking over and Rock disappearing as the musical pulse of the generations. Bad Company managed to survive Punk and New Wave, but they did run out of steam soon after and their sixth album, the last featuring the original lineup, was released when the band practically did not exist any more.
This album pays tribute to the three instrumentalists in the band, who prove their great skills on these live recordings. Ralphs is obviously a superb guitarist, who was able to play great solos and support the flow of the music by supplying incredible riffs. Kirke is a great drummer, probably one of the very few top Blues-Rock drummers, who always exhibited brilliant sensitivity and technique. Burrell, who is sadly no longer with us, was a dazzling bassist and his work always provides the cement which kept the music together.
Since nobody plays great Rock today as Bad Company did at the time, perhaps this album could serve as a source of inspiration to some young musicians to learn how it´s done…In the meantime we have this to remember what Rock was all about once.

  | BAD COMPANY ~ ORIGINAL ALBUM SERIES RHINO 081227959241 (Barcode: 081227959241) ~ UK ~ Blues-Rock Recorded: 1974 - 1979 Released: 2014
This Box Set collects the first five albums recorded by the British Rock supergroup Bad CompanyFind albums by this artist and released between 1974 and 1979. The group was formed soon after the brilliant FreeFind albums by this artist fell apart and included Free vocalist Paul RodgersFind albums by this artist and drummer Simon KirkeFind albums by this artist as well as Mott The HoopleFind albums by this artist guitarist Mick RalphsFind albums by this artist and King CrimsonFind albums by this artist bassist Boz BurrellFind albums by this artist. This lineup recorded all these five albums.
Musically Bad Company was initially a direct continuation of where Free left off, i.e. moving gradually away from Blues and Blues-Rock into straightforward Rock with just a tinge of Blues, which was still present mainly due to Rogers´ incredible voice, which sounds Bluesy whatever he sings. The first two albums are absolute classic and the rest slowly loosen the magic, but in retrospect are way better that anything recorded today.
Personally anything that has Paul Rodgers singing on it is fine with me, as he is definitely one of my absolute top vocal favorites, not only because of his superb and unique voice but more importantly due to his wonderful musicality, feel and groove, especially for the Blues but also in the Rock idiom.
Alongside Humble PieFind albums by this artist and Spooky ToothFind albums by this artist, Free and Bad Company were the very core of British Blues-Rock, which was absolutely unbeatable by anything else on this planet. Those bands flourished for a brief period of time between late 1960s and mid-1970s, leaving an unsurpassed heritage, which still is a beacon of excellence decades later. For fans of that genre, this Box Set is an absolute must! Side Note The "Original Album SeriesFind albums with this title" by Warner Bros.Find albums on this label, the "Original Album ClassicsFind albums with this title" by SonyFind albums on this label, the "5 Original AlbumsFind albums with this title" by UniversalFind albums on this label, the Box Sets by RhinoFind albums on this label and other similar releases are an archetypal example of how good intentions turn sour. Although these new editions often bring back to life some of the best music ever made on this planet, which in many cases has been lost in the tides of time and was unavailable on the market for ages, they suffer from an unforgivable disregard for the essence of cultural values and general sloppiness, contrary to human decency, which requires as to treat our Cultural Legacy with respect and loyalty.
The Box Sets produced under these monikers have no discographical information whatsoever about the lineups, musician names, composers, lyricists, dates and places of recording, original release data and even basic copyright data (the last is strictly illegal BTW). Although the original LP sleeves are reproduced, they are often edited and information (which would be in most cases too small to be readable) is removed. Most importantly these Box Sets don't include any booklet offering a historical background and perspective about the Artists and the Music, which are extremely important and vital to the preservation of our Culture and passing the knowledge to the next generations.
In short the fact that these Box Sets are meant to be inexpensive, does not mean that they have to be cheap. Considering the fact how many times this music has been sold over and over again by the labels, this is a crying shame!

  | BLACK BONZO ~ LADY OF THE LIGHT ROCK SYMPHONY 121 (Barcode: 7898217281212) ~ SWEDEN ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 2004 Released: 2004
1st album by Swedish Prog band Black BonzoFind albums by this artist and certainly one of the most remarkable Symphonic Prog albums in the last decade. From the very first moment you start listening to the album you are immediately transported in time some 30+ years back to the hay days of Classic Rock and melodic Symphonic Prog. Although the band has been often compared to Uriah HeepFind albums by this artist (at their best), based on the heavy keyboards and guitar riffs, it goes way beyond being a modern version of that band. The melodies are much better constructed and interesting and the clever use of the mellotron brings many other associations, mostly early King CrimsonFind albums by this artist. But regardless of what nostalgic reminiscences the album brings about, it is a most remarkable debut effort and quite a stunning listening experience, especially for old geezers like myself, who can proudly nod their heads and confirm that Prog is certainly alive and kicking. Do yourself a favor and get a copy of this, turn the volume up and enjoy life!

7th album and a 2CD set from this legendary Prog drummer Bill BrufordFind albums by this artist (YesFind albums by this artist, King CrimsonFind albums by this artist) comming back to his jazz roots. A classic quartet (sax, piano, bass & drums) seems to be the best way to play jazz still after all those years and this absolutely stunning live recording proves yet again that Bruford is one of the greatest musicians on earth and still my favorite drummer. | BILL BRUFORD / EARTHWORKS ~ LIVE AT THE SHAUBURG BREMEN 1987 MOOSICUS 1215 (Barcode: 885513121523) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1987 Released: 2022
This is an archival live album by the British Jazz drummer / composer / bandleader Bill BrufordFind albums by this artist and the first edition of his sensational quartet called EarthworksFind albums by this artist, which also included saxophonist Iain BallamyFind albums by this artist, pianist Django BatesFind albums by this artist and bassist Mick HuttonFind albums by this artist. The album was recorded by Radio Bremen in November 25, 1987, and offers ten tracks, all original compositions by the quartet members.
Bruford founded Earthworks in 1986 after spending almost twenty years as member of cutting edge Progressive Rock bands like YesFind albums by this artist (of which he was a founding member), King CrimsonFind albums by this artist, GenesisFind albums by this artist, U.K.Find albums by this artist and his own band called simply BrufordFind albums by this artist, returning to his Jazz roots. Earthworks comprised of the crème de la crème of the young British Jazz scene at the time and took the local as well as international scene by storm.
This live recording finds the quartet in absolute top form, over a year after their debut album was recorded and following extensive touring, which allowed them to develop the material and their unique musical approach. In contrast to expectations and speculations, Earthworks was a bona-fide Jazz quartet, which did not follow the Fusion path, which would have been more natural as a continuation of Bruford’s musical path up to that moment. Bellamy and Bates arrived from the sensational Loose TubesFind albums by this artist Big Band, which was one of British Jazz most surprising ensembles during the 1980, and Hutton was already a highly sought after young Jazz bassist on the local scene. Together they were simply unstoppable and the level of their performances was absolutely sensational. They were able to create a complex fury of sound, which was completely unprecedented on the British Jazz scene, and Bruford’s drumming behind Earthworks in as absolute peak of his career.
Overall, this album is a “missing link” in the Earthworks discography, from the period between the debut and the second album “Dig?Find albums with this title”, and of course an essential part in the Bruford discography, which none of his many fans will want to miss.

  | CAMEL ~ BREATHLESS (EXPANDED EDITION) ESOTERIC 2155 (Barcode: 5013929725522) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1978 Released: 2009
7th album by British Prog legends CamelFind albums by this artist, which marks a transition period in the band´s history, which followed a five years of personnel stability and incredibly productive output, as documented by their albums released during that period. Prior to the recording of this album´s predecessor – "Rain DancesFind albums with this title" – founding member / bassist Doug FergusonFind albums by this artist left the band, leaving the remaining three founding members: keyboardist Peter BardensFind albums by this artist, guitarist Andy LatimerFind albums by this artist and drummer Andy WardFind albums by this artist in need for replacement. They soon found the incredibly gifted bass player Richard SinclairFind albums by this artist (CaravanFind albums by this artist, Hatfield And The NorthFind albums by this artist) and also added saxophonist / flautist Mel CollinsFind albums by this artist (King CrimsonFind albums by this artist) as a permanent member of the band, making it a quintet for the first time, and this lineup recorded "Rain Dances". However, during the recording of "BreathlessFind albums with this title", Peter Bardens announced, that he´ll be leaving the group, which was a serious blow, considering his enormous input to the group´s creative process. The quintet lineup managed to record the album, with Bardens leaving immediately after. As to the music included on the album; at the time of its release it was considered both by the band´s fans and critics as disappointing and way too "commercial" in comparison to the band´s earlier efforts. In retrospect, although different indeed, it still preserves an incredibly high musical standard and integrity, both on the compositional and performance level, and suggests that it was rather the fans, who disliked change, then the band, which propagated change, which caused the fracture. There is no doubt that this album belongs to the proud heritage of music left to us by one of the best British Prog bands in the genre´s history. Recommended!

  | ROGER CHAPMAN ~ CHAPPO / LIVE IN HAMBURG BGO 824 (Barcode: 5017261208248) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1979 Released: 2008
1st and 2nd albums by UK singer Roger ChapmanFind albums by this artist, recorded following the demise of FamilyFind albums by this artist and later StreetwalkersFind albums by this artist, the two bands he led since the late 1960s and up to the late 1970s. Chapman´s decision to go solo was a logical move following his experiences with bands, which failed to gain large following, despite the fact that they played some of the best music recorded in the 1970s, both Prog and later Classic Rock. He was at the top of his vocal powers and idiosyncratic showmanship and unique throaty voice had no equals, neither at the time nor later. Chapman selected an excellent band to accompany him on his debut studio album, which included Henry SpinnettiFind albums by this artist on drums, Geoff WhitehornFind albums by this artist on guitar and the legendary Brian OdgersFind albums by this artist on bass. Ex-Family cohort Poly PalmerFind albums by this artist also participated on several tracks. Following the release of the studio album Chapman formed a touring band, christened ShortlistFind albums by this artist, which included some of the musicians who played on the studio album and added Ex-King CrimsonFind albums by this artist saxophonist Mel CollinsFind albums by this artist, which was recorded live in Germany a few month later and released as the second album. Both albums absolutely kick butt are superb examples of Classic Rock, even when recorded relatively late, when Rock was already dying. Chapman still enjoys quite a lot of popularity, especially in Europe, and continues to perform and record. For his fans these albums are an absolute must!

  | CRIMSON JAZZ TRIO ~ KING CRIMSON SONGBOOK VOL.1 VOICEPRINT 373 (Barcode: 604388321421) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 2005 Released: 2005
This is a perfect marriage of two of my favorite worlds: Jazz and Prog. The piano trio was always my jazz vehicle of choice, as it is ideal to provide both the improvisational and rhythmic jazz qualities. The music of the legendary Prog band King CrimsonFind albums by this artist was always right on top of my preferred music. The Crimson Jazz TrioFind albums by this artist combines both of these preferences perfectly. Jody NardoneFind albums by this artist (piano), Tim LandersFind albums by this artist (bass) and ex-KC Ian WallaceFind albums by this artist (drums) take the music of KC places, which were unimaginable so far – far into the land of swing (I wander if anybody could have imagined the music of KC in that setting before). The players shine and sweat from the onset to the very last note, full of imagination, brilliant technique and intelligent interplay. The sound is perfect as well, with clear definition of sound, which enables the entire range of the piano to sound balanced and the drum kit (from bass drum to hi-hat) to be perfectly audible. I can only join Robert FrippFind albums by this artist in his reaction to this masterpiece: “Can’t wait for Vol.2”!

  | EGGROLL ~ LIVE PROGRESSIVE ACT NOT ON LABEL ~ ISRAEL ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 2005
This is the 1st Israeli Prog DVD. Their highly professional performances gradually earned the band a solid following and admiration and the band’s many performances around the country served as a catalyst for the local Prog scene, which is flourishing in the last few years. The music includes three lengthy covers (“This As A Brick”, “Starless” and Supper’s Ready”), which reflect the band’s ability as performers, and some original material that the band’s members wrote, as well as a short documentary about the band. This is an important document of the Israeli Prog scene and hopefully more material like this will become available soon. 59 minutes.

  | EGGROLL & THE SHAKES ~ FAIRYTALE NOT ON LABEL ~ ISRAEL ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 2005 Released: 2006

Eggroll started a few years back as a “cover” band, playing music by GenesisFind albums by this artist, King CrimsonFind albums by this artist, Jethro TullFind albums by this artist and others. Their performances were highly professional and gradually earned the band a solid following and admiration. That period of their activity is well documented on their DVD Live Progressive ActFind albums with this title filmed in 2003. Fans and critics often asked the band to include original material in their act and they started to do so in the last couple of years. This debut album consists of entirely original material, which is of course most welcome. The songs (sung in English) have close ties to the Progressive sources, but fortunately are original enough to avoid being mere copies. If fact the level of composition is surprisingly high, with well developed themes and well-crafted instrumental arrangements. The vocals are excellent as well, with no foreign accent whatsoever. Overall a superb debut album and a most welcome addition to the excellent output produced by Israeli bands in the last couple of years. Most warmly recommended!

This is the 5th album by the supergroup Emerson, Lake & PalmerFind albums by this artist, which was definitely one of the most important, innovative and revolutionary groups to emerge on the Rock scene as leaders of the Progressive / Art Rock genre by the early 1970s. The group arrived on the scene a bit later than their "accomplices" (YesFind albums by this artist, GenesisFind albums by this artist, Jethro TullFind albums by this artist, King CrimsonFind albums by this artist and others), since keyboardist Keith EmersonFind albums by this artist, guitarist / bassist / lead vocalist Greg LakeFind albums by this artist and drummer Carl PalmerFind albums by this artist were already prominent members of early / proto Prog bands before the trio combined forces and merged into this formidable ensemble. They definitely were the best fit as far as the simplistic definition of Prog is concerned (i.e. an amalgam of Rock and Classical music), allowing Emerson to fulfill his fascination / obsession with Classical music pieces and even contribute some of his own music set to a similar (i.e. classical) framework. It also allowed Lake to write some of the most memorable Rock ballads and Palmer to beat the hell out of endless drum sets, all of which seemed to delight hordes of Rock (and I mean Rock as opposed to Prog) music listeners the world over. They were all monster musicians, they were at the top of their youthful peak of creativity and they kicked ass, big time! It was great while it lasted, and it did last for about half a decade and six albums, and the legend went sour when these gentlemen failed to realize that it´s over and pressed on, seemingly endlessly, damaging the image of their glorious achievements in the process. But in retrospect, wiser and older by 40 years, I still find this music fascinating and powerful, imaginative and bold, and above all artistically sound. Considering the fact that these recordings were off the market due to some corporate music industry bullshit, it´s great to see it back on the shelves, this time released by SonyFind albums on this label Music, which hopefully will keep them alive for a while.

This Deluxe Edition spread over two CDs and a DVD-A is sadly another rip-off scheme, which basically adds nothing to the original album. The first CD is the original album; the second CD adds a single alternate version track and offers a new stereo mix of the original album, which is completely redundant. The DVD-A offers the same material in other higher resolution formats, including lossless and 5.1, in short a complete waste of time and plastic, not to mention money. God only knows why these monstrosities are being produced again and again?

This is the 7th album by the supergroup Emerson, Lake & PalmerFind albums by this artist, which was definitely one of the most important, innovative and revolutionary groups to emerge on the Rock scene as leaders of the Progressive / Art Rock genre by the early 1970s. It marks the beginning of the second phase in the group´s career, which is often dismissed as extravagant and exhibitionist by critics and fans alike, but in retrospect produced some remarkable music overall. This album, which was originally released as a double LP, spotlights the three individual musicians, giving each of them a separate vinyl side with only the last 4th side included music made by the trio. Keith EmersonFind albums by this artist, as usually obsessed with Classical music, presents his "Piano Concerto No. 1", Greg LakeFind albums by this artist the "romantic dreamer" produces several great ballads with lyrics written by ex-King CrimsonFind albums by this artist cohort Peter SinfieldFind albums by this artist and Carl PalmerFind albums by this artist comes up with more incredible drum pyrotechnics on his side. The trio side features more of the trio´s familiar mixture of Classical and Rock. | ERGO SUM ~ MIXOLIDIO ROCK SYMPHONY 045 (Barcode: 7898217280451) ~ CHILE ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1999 - 2001 Released: 2001
2nd album by the great Chilean Prog group Ergo SumFind albums by this artist. Following their excellent eponymous debut album, the band went through a personnel change (a new bassist and drummer) with the original drummer switching to vibraphone, which enhanced their sound considerably. The also updated their musical approach considerably, switching from symphonic Prog to a much more ambitious material, jazzier and more improvised them before. Late King CrimsonFind albums by this artist and Scandinavian groups like AnglagardFind albums by this artist could serve as reference points, but the music is quite unique and original. The album consists of several studio tracks and a long suite called “Trilogia” performed live. This is a very strong album in every respect, which puts the group in the same category with other excellent Chilean groups like TryoFind albums by this artist and Akinetón RetardFind albums by this artist. This is a reissue of the original LP, with 2 added tracks recorded especially for this CD edition. Wholeheartedly recommended!

  | EXSIMIO ~ CARBONO 14 MYLODON 034 (Barcode: 3426300046116) ~ CHILE ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 2005 Released: 2005
2nd album by the excellent Chilean Prog band ExsimioFind albums by this artist. Clearly influenced by 1990s King CrimsonFind albums by this artist, the band features two lead guitarists, which of course makes plenty of room for guitar pyrotechnics and interplay. Some Djam KaretFind albums by this artist guitar duels also come to mind, as do some of the RIO bands. Most of the tunes are pretty up-tempo, with multiple rhythm changes and quirky beats. All together this is pretty amazing and brilliant stuff, well ahead of most present-day Prog material, which proves again that Chilean Prog, with groups like TryoFind albums by this artist and Akinetón RetardFind albums by this artist, is well in the lead of the contemporary Prog scene. I can’t imagine any KC fan not wanting this beauty in his collection and I warmly recommend checking this group and this album out.

1st album by the sensational Chilean Prog group ExsimioFind albums by this artist, which features a double lead guitar lineup, reminiscent of Djam KaretFind albums by this artist and late King CrimsonFind albums by this artist. The virtuosi guitar performances and the exceptional music, full of unexpected rhythm changes, twists and turns played at neck-breaking speed is absolutely overwhelming. This is undoubtedly on of the finest debut albums recorded in the last decade. Musically Exsimio are close to the RIO movement, combining rock and jazz elements, but their contributions are truly unique and unparalleled by any other contemporary band. This album should appeal to quite a large Prog audience, be it guitar aficionados, RIO fans and of course all Chilean Prog lovers – an absolute must. Their second album Carbono 14Find albums with this title, for which we had to wait almost 6 years, is a brilliant follow up to this album and one not be missed as well.

  | FAMILY ~ BANDSTAND / IT`S ONLY A MOVIE BGO 856 (Barcode: 5017261208569) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1972 - 1973 Released: 2009
7th and 8th albums by the fantastic British Prog band FamilyFind albums by this artist, one of the most imaginative, sophisticated and excellent bands of the 1970s. "BandstandFind albums with this title" was recorded by the same excellent lineup that created its predecessor "FearlessFind albums with this title" and the live album. In spite of extensive touring and some chart success Family sadly remained somewhere in the back trenches of the turbulent Rock scene, never actually achieving the recognition they truly deserved. By the time the recorded the second album included here, which was to be their swansong, the band was clearly running out of steam as far as climbing the commercial top was concerned. Poli PalmerFind albums by this artist and John WettonFind albums by this artist left (Wetton joined King CrimsonFind albums by this artist) and were replaced by keyboardist Tony AshtonFind albums by this artist and bassist Jim CreganFind albums by this artist. The last album was much more relaxed that the previous material, but definitely still a great piece of musical ingenuity, even if the critics and many of the band´s fans thought otherwise. In retrospect its whimsical approach to songwriting and Jazzy undertones sound truly excellent. The quality of the songwriting, as well as the extended instrumental work, is staggering and completely uncompromised by the passage of time. This is the Holy Grail of early Prog, regardless the fact that most Prog historians and music critics often fail to recognize the band´s contribution to the genre. This remastered edition spiced up with many bonus tracks is a must to any collector of Prog albums, as no collection can be complete without them. Absolutely essential!

  | KEVIN FIGES ~ YOU ARE HERE JAZZ NOW 02 (Barcode: 5060774190654) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 2023 Released: 2024
This is an album by British Jazz saxophonist Kevin FigesFind albums by this artist, recorded in a sextet setting with pianist Jim BlomfieldFind albums by this artist, trombonist Raphael ClarksonFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Pete JudgeFind albums by this artist, drummer Tony OrrellFind albums by this artist and bassist Riaan VoslooFind albums by this artist. The album presents fourteen tracks, five of which were composed by Keith TippettFind albums by this artist, five were composed by other British Jazz musicians connected to Tippett throughout his career, and the remaining four short pieces were composed by the members of the sextet.
The album (and the sextet) is a tribute to the music of the legendary British pianist / composer / bandleader Keith Tippett, one of the most important figures of the modern British Jazz. Figes and a few other members of the sextet played with Tippet before his untimely demise in 2020, and the leader directed a series of concerts commemorating Tippett’s music, leading to the creation of this album.
The music is a wonderful tribute to Tippett’s giant contribution to the development of British Jazz since the late 1960s, in which he instigated some of the most revolutionary ideas, ranging from solo piano to Big Band / Orchestral projects, which are still perfectly valid today and remain beacons of ingenuity and genius, sadly not present on the contemporary scene.
The music is splendidly performed and recorded and offers a fond memory of Tippett and other heroes of the British Jazz scene, like Elton DeanFind albums by this artist, Harry MillerFind albums by this artist, Hugh HopperFind albums by this artist, Dudu PukwanaFind albums by this artist and King CrimsonFind albums by this artist members, all of which made a tremendous contribution at their time. The material selected for this album is a superb review / retrospect glance at the finest moments of the scene.
This album is the second release on the new Jazz NowFind albums on this label label, created by the same people who run the splendid Jazz In BritainFind albums on this label label, which produced an impressive series of brilliant albums, which document the development of British Jazz in past decades. Obviously the new label is meant to document contemporary British Jazz.
Overall, this is a wonderful tribute album, which offers refreshed versions of compositions by Keith Tippett and other Godfathers of modern British Jazz, splendidly arranged and performed by Figes and the sextet, a great addition to any British Jazz record collection.

1st and 2nd albums by brilliant British Prog outfit GnidrologFind albums by this artist, one of the best representatives of the genre, who for some incomprehensible reason failed to make any impact at the time and were largely discovered decades later by new generation of Prog fans. Led by twin brothers Colin GoldringFind albums by this artist (lead vocals) and Stewart GoldringFind albums by this artist (lead guitars), the group also included Peter CowlingFind albums by this artist on bass and Nigel PegrumFind albums by this artist on drums. Saxophonist John EarleFind albums by this artist joined the group in time for the second album. All the group members played additional instruments and as an ensemble were able to produce a most impressive instrumental variety. Their true strength however was the incredibly complex music they composed, which was more advanced than that of most of their contemporaries. Frequent tempo changes, quirk passages, uneven beats, in short everything that makes music interesting, were all part of their musical trademark. Although the band obviously had their unique voice and did not copy or was not especially influenced by any of their peers, Prog aficionados will find in their music traces of King CrimsonFind albums by this artist, Jethro TullFind albums by this artist, Gentle GiantFind albums by this artist and basically any known British Prog act active at the time, although to be completely fair it is worth mentioning that Gnidrolog probably used (or invented) many of the tricks of the trade before any of the others did. Following the complete commercial failure of the two albums, the group disbanded and was never heard about again, until they re-surfaced with a re-union recording almost 30 years later. These two albums firmly belong to the early Prog Canon and are worthy of discovery by anybody who missed them until now. Absolutely classic stuff!

They play a complex, yet wonderfully coherent modern Prog with some traces of the glorious past but mostly completely original and unique. It is heartwarming to see these relatively young musicians displaying such maturity and professionalism, both as composers and performers. This music is as complex as King CrimsonFind albums by this artist late efforts, with layers of vocal harmonies and instrumentation superimposed one on top of another, but the overall effect sounds effortless and comprehensible even to a less experienced listener. The usage of odd rhythmic patterns adds another dimension to the music’s zest, with traces of RIO and even some Scandinavian Prog, which goes to prove that Prog (as all music) knows no geographical boundaries any more. This album is in fact the band’s second release, with an EP released a year earlier, which is also quite excellent. It seems that this band is definitely going places, and with such splendid kick off they are surely worth watching. Wholeheartedly recommended!

4th and last, never previously released, album by the British Prog band JonesyFind albums by this artist, which is quite a surprise. The band’s three previous albums (“No AlternativeFind albums with this title”, “Keeping UpFind albums with this title” and “GrowingFind albums with this title”) recorded between 1971 and 1974 and originally released on the DawnFind albums on this label label, are great examples of the Prog scene at the time, with strong King CrimsonFind albums by this artist influences and interesting contributions from the horn player Alan BownFind albums by this artist (on the 2nd and 3rd album). Following the release of the 3rd album the band simply split up, as happened to most bands at that time, due to tensions between the band members, leaving brothers John Evan-JonesFind albums by this artist (guitars, keyboards and vocals) and Gypsy JonesFind albums by this artist (bass, keyboards, violin and vocals) as the remaining core of the band. Together with three studio musicians: Ken ElliottFind albums by this artist – keyboards, Bernard HagleyFind albums by this artist – electric saxophones and David PottsFind albums by this artist – drums and percussion, they recorded their swan song, which was their most ambitious and elaborate project their ever attempted. Unfortunately due to contractual problems the album was not released on time and to make things worse the original master tapes were stolen from the studio, leaving the band with nothing, which led to the inevitable dead end. The only remaining testimony of the last album was a cassette copy, which is the source of this release. Remastered and cleaned up, it actually sounds pretty decently, and considering the great music it contains, the sonic quality is of secondary importance. This is a concept album, as fashionable at the time, presenting a psychic journey of a man experiencing a mental breakdown and his way to recovery. The music is complex and dense, with layers of sound overlapping and elaborate studio wizardry. The musical themes and the performances are first rate and overall it’s quite a gem, which now, 30 years after its recording, can be finally discovered and enjoyed by Prog fans everywhere. Definitely worth investigating.

Although the source of the music comes from various bootleg recordings and Fripp’s cassettes, rendering somewhat inferior sound quality, the importance and the power of this music overshadows all sonic obstacles. As with Jazz, this highly improvised music provides new aspects with every performance, making it absolutely unique and unrepeatable. | KING CRIMSON ~ EYES WIDE OPEN SANCTUARY 3056 ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
There are very few things in this world that you can bet your life on, but for me (continually over the years) King Crimson is definitely one of them. Although the group underwent more personal, stylistic and musical changes than any other of its peers, KC managed to emerge not only as the best of them all but also the most consistent one. This double DVD set is yet another proof of that (not that any proof is needed). It captures the latest (so far) KC configuration as a quartet, with Fripp, Belew, Gunn and Mastelotto – three (very different) guitar players and a drummer. Filmed almost 3 years apart from each other, the first DVD documents a London concert from July 2000 and the second a Tokyo concert from April 2003. Obviously the performances are quite different, as is the material. The earlier DVD includes mostly the legacy of the double trio, whereas the later includes mostly material from the “The Power To Believe” album, which the group was promoting at the time. There is no need to boast how good this stuff is – anybody who is a KC fan already knows it. For a KC addict like myself, this is of course a must. Any opportunity to see (and hear) a live performance by KC is an eye (and ear) opener any way you look at it. Devilishly clever music performed by masterly players – never a dull moment! Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound.

  | KING CRIMSON ~ IN THE COURT OF THE CRIMSON KING (ORIGINAL MASTER EDITION) DGM 0501 (Barcode: 633367050120) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1969 Released: 2005
1st album by the legendary Prog band King CrimsonFind albums by this artist and the most important Prog album of all times. There is no other example of recorded music in existence, which defines a complete genre (and all its sub-genres) so comprehensibly as this album and becomes a reference point for generations to follow. Everything that is defined as Prog can be found on this album: intricate compositions, shifting rhythms, extended jazzy improvisations, mystic lyrics - in short the canon of the genre. | KING CRIMSON ~ IN THE WAKE OF POSEIDON (30TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION + BONUS TRACKS) DGM 0502 (Barcode: 633367050229) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1970 Released: 2005
2nd album by King CrimsonFind albums by this artist and one of the most eagerly awaited follow ups in the history of Prog. Honestly how does one follow up a masterpiece such as the debut In The Court Of The Crimson KingFind albums with this title, which was almost instantly elevated to the status of a genre-defining masterpiece. Adding to the challenge ahead the band at the time of the recording seemed to be in a shaky state, following the exhausting touring schedule and dramatic personnel changes: Ian McDonaldFind albums by this artist, who’s mellotron and flute parts were one of the most prominent features of the debut album, left the band in the midst of their US tour. Michael GilesFind albums by this artist and Greg LakeFind albums by this artist announced their departure soon after, and although they took part in the recording sessions for this album they were practically out. All this turmoil seemed to have little influence on Robert FrippFind albums by this artist, who used his resilience and what was to become his legendary survival instinct, to reorganize the band and move on. Mel CollinsFind albums by this artist joined the band to take over the flute and saxophones department. Michael’s brother bassist Peter GilesFind albums by this artist joined to provide the full force of the Giles & Giles rhythm section, which was second to none on the scene. Fripp also turned to his friends from the burgeoning (at the time) London Avant-Garde Rock and Jazz scene and enlisted the wonderful pianist Keith TippetFind albums by this artist, who adds many brilliant piano trinkets on the album. Singer Gordon HaskellFind albums by this artist joined in on one song to provide his contribution. Fripp, in addition to composing all of the music (to the lyrics penned by Peter SinfieldFind albums by this artist) and playing the guitar parts, also took over the mellotron chair, maintaining the instrument’s supremacy in the overall band’s sound. Against all odds, this album is as strong, if not stronger then its predecessor. The compositions are better developed and the playing, enforced by the presence of the new members, is richer and better organized. Amazing stuff and absolutely essential. This new edition expands the original 30th Anniversary Edition from 1999 by adding two bonus tracks – the two sides of the King Crimson single released to promote the album. This is the first time any additional material is added to the original studio albums by the band.

  | KING CRIMSON ~ IN THE WAKE OF POSEIDON (30TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION) VIRGIN KC 2 ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1970
2nd album from 1970. Following the debut album of such magnitude as ITCOTCK seemed impossible, especially in view of the shaky state the band was in at the time, with personell changes, but nevertheless this album is as strong, if not stronger then its predecessor. The compositions are more spacey and the playing, enforced by the presence of Keith Tippett and extended use of Mellortone by Fripp is richer and better organized. Amazing stuff and absolutely essential.

  | KING CRIMSON ~ ISLANDS (30TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION) VIRGIN KC 4 ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
4th album from 1971. This was to be the last studio album by what is know as the first period of the band, followed only by the live `Earthbound`. The instrumentation is similar to the one used on `Lizard`, with several jazz musicians guesting, but the format is tighter and more rocky. Fripp`s guitar and mellotron and Collins` saxes dominate the sound. The level of musicianship is stunning, as usual. 30th Anniversary Edition

  | KING CRIMSON ~ LADIES OF THE ROAD DGM 0203 ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
A real special treat from KC! The first album in this set is a live performance from 1971-1972 by the original lineup, taken from the archives. The second album is a special compilation of guitar & sax solos played during the 1971-1973 tours, all taken from the song 21st Century Schizoid Man, which results in an over 50 minutes long version of the song. It`s a knockout!

  | KING CRIMSON ~ LARKS` TONGUES IN ASPIC VIRGIN KC 5 ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
6th album from 1973. This album marks the re-born KC after a short period of regrouping, with a completely new lineup, which includes David Cross on violin, John Wetton on bass and lead vocals and the astounding Bill Bruford on drums, who will be part of all KC incarnations from now on. Both the sound and the musical direction are completely revamped, with dark, heavy, convulsed atmosphere and avant-rock style dominating. A masterpiece! 30th Anniversary Edition

  | KING CRIMSON ~ LIZARD VIRGIN KC 3 ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
3rd album from 1970. Almost complete change of direction for the band with strong jazz influence incorporated into the initial formats defined by the the first two albums. The origianal band is no more present here, with Fripp taking over completely. The cream of the crop of UK jazz participates on this album, as initially indicated by the inclusion of Keith Tippett and Jon Anderson (Yes) sings on one track. In retrospect this is the boldest and most exciting statement by the first (well almost) incarnation of the band. Absolutely essential. 30th Anniversary Edition. Out of print collectors` item.

  | KING CRIMSON ~ RED VIRGIN KC 7 ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
8th album from 1974. A fantastic work by the second version of KC, here as a trio (Fripp, Wetton, Brufford) with some overdubs by KC cohoots from earlier years (Collins & McDonald - saxes and David Cross on violin). Extremely energetic and demanding music, brilliant all the way!. 30th Anniversary Edition

  | KING CRIMSON ~ STARLESS AND BIBLE BLACK VIRGIN KC 6 ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
7th album from 1974. Same line-up as on the previous album (less percussion) and the same musical direction, even more expanded into the fringes of the `known` musical vocabulary of that period. Some of the most memorable KC melodies were born for this album and the overall effect is shocking to this very day. As usual, KC were years ahead of their time and pioneering new musical grounds. Essential! 30th Anniversary Edition

Although issued under the KC name, this album is subtitled as `The Beginners` Guide To ProjeKcts`, and is in fact a collection of tracks taken from the 5 ProjeKcts albums, which were recorded by the various sub-groups of KC (so called fractalizations of KC) including members of the double trio lineup between 1997 and 1999. If one does not intend to get all the individual ProjeKcts albums, this is an excellent alternative.

Fantastic double CD with a 1973 live recording of KC, considered by many to be one of their finest. The quartet of Fripp, Cross, Wetton & Bruford shine all the way through and the music flows like magic. In total 82 minutes of pure musical genious.

  | KING CRIMSON ~ THE POWER TO BELIEVE SANCTUARY 155 ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 2003
Long awaited new studio album by King CrimsonFind albums by this artist - the Kings of Prog. Although much criticised by the press, this is as good as anything KC did in the last decade, with complex instrumentation and dramatic mood changes. Lyrics are scarce, but the music speaks for itself, mostly in very dark colors. This time King Crimson are a quartet with 3 (!) guitars and percussion - Guitar heaven it is then. Bend your ears!

  | KING CRIMSON ~ THRAKATTAK DGM 96042 ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
This album captures a live performance by the double trio from 1995. The emphasis is more on improvised material rather then `songs`, and therefore this is less accessible then most KC material, but when listened to attentively, the wonders of those superb musicians are awestrucking. Not an `easy` listening experience, but richly rewarding for those who truly love KC.

  | KOMARA ~ KOMARA HEVHETIA 0104 (Barcode: 8588005257466) ~ SLOVAKIA ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 2014 Released: 2015
This is the debut album by the international "supergroup" trio KoMaRaFind albums by this artist comprising of Slovak guitarist / bassist David KollarFind albums by this artist, American drummer Pat MastelottoFind albums by this artist (King CrimsonFind albums by this artist) and Italian trumpeter Paolo RaineriFind albums by this artist. It presents ten original compositions, which are not specifically credited on the album´s artwork and therefore in all probability are group compositions by the trio members.
There is no doubt that KoMaRa attempts to build a new aesthetic in contemporary music. The striking cover art (by ToolFind albums by this artist´s Adam JonesFind albums by this artist) brings almost immediate association with no less striking "Alien" surrealistic cinematic art by Swiss H. R. GigerFind albums by this artist and in all honesty this album could easily serve as the soundtrack of the "Alien" movies. The music is completely beyond classification, which by itself is already a huge compliment. Cross-genre, cross-style, cross-culture it simply goes all over the place, from Heavy Metal to contemporary Classical, with a serious dose of Jazzy improvisation, Electronic and Ambient, in short a wonderful mayhem, which against all odds makes perfect sense artistically.
Although there is no point in analyzing individual contributions by the trio members, as this music is an indissoluble whole, it must be stated that the final result works so well because the personas behind it are so different from each other. Kollar is the avant-gardist relentlessly searching for new sounds and effects, Mastelotto is the rock of Gibraltar, keeping everything in check and Raineri is the romantic sound poet pouring his lyricism on top to calm the stormy, erupting lava bubbling below.
KoMaRa is not revolutionary; countless groups attempted similar musical synergy projects since many years, and yet it is undoubtedly one of the most successful of such projects. Therefore, rather then revolution, KoMaRa´s music presents another evolutionary step in music, which amalgamates all our musical traditions and manages to come forth with something previously unachieved, which happens, sadly, extremely rarely as of late.
In spite of this music´s "strangeness", it is remarkably accessible, at least to an experienced listener. Repeated listening reveals additional layers, as usual in projects of such complexity, which means that this album can be discovered and re-discovered over a period of time. This is definitely an album that deserves to be wholeheartedly recommended and open-minded / open-hearted listeners are in for a treat!

  | HARRY MILLER / ISIPINGO ~ WHICH WAY NOW CUNEIFORM 233 (Barcode: 045775023328) ~ UK ~ Jazz Released: 2006
Originally from South Africa, Harry MillerFind albums by this artist was one of the main forces on the UK jazz scene in the 1970s. He recorded and performed with all the major players during that period (John SurmanFind albums by this artist, CentipedeFind albums by this artist, Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist, Keith TippettFind albums by this artist, Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist, King CrimsonFind albums by this artist, Julie TippettsFind albums by this artist, Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist and Chris McGregorFind albums by this artist´s Brotherhood Of BreathFind albums by this artist) and his contributions were very significant in the development on that wonderfully diverse and prolific period. He and his wife founded the legendary OgunFind albums on this label label, which released many of that period’s essential recordings and documented the scene probably more efficiently than any other UK label at the time. Miller’s sextet IsipingoFind albums by this artist (Nick EvansFind albums by this artist - trombone, Mongezi FezaFind albums by this artist - trumpet, Harry Miller - double bass, Louis MoholoFind albums by this artist - drums, Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist - alto sax and Keith TippettFind albums by this artist - piano) recorded only one studio album and therefore this high-quality recording from 1975 by Radio Bremen is an invaluable addition to both Miller’s discography and the overall documentation of this illustrious period in UK jazz. The music is somewhat similar to the output of Chris McGregor´s Brotherhood of Breath (as is the group’s lineup), which played a special kind of jazz strongly influenced by Africa music, called “kwela”. Isipingo is just a bit more on the jazzy side of things. For the many fans of 1970s UK jazz this is a must of course.

  | OUTER LIMITS ~ STROMATOLITE MUSEA 4719 (Barcode: 3426300047199) ~ JAPAN ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 2007 Released: 2007
After leading the Japanese Prog scene for many years in the 1980s and releasing several excellent albums, Outer LimitsFind albums by this artist disappeared from the scene only to be reunited and to record a new album 20 years after their last studio effort. Keyboards player Shusei TsukamotoFind albums by this artist, who writes most of the music for the band, now leads the quintet. Violinist Takashi KawaguchiFind albums by this artist is the most impressive player in the band with truly virtuoso ability. His lyrical parts are deeply moving but he also swings on the up-tempo pieces. The music is extremely impressive, with evident links to contemporary Classical music and at times touching upon late King CrimsonFind albums by this artist’s legacy. The vocals (sung in English) are sparse and bear little effect on the mostly instrumental material. This is definitely not the kind of material a casual Prog listener might enjoy, as the music requires intensive contemplation and repeated savoring. The overall atmosphere is rather somber and overwhelming, but the music is eventually deeply rewarding. Absolutely brilliant!

  | PLATURNO ~ NÚCLEOS MYLODON 043 ~ CHILE ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 2006 Released: 2006
1st album by Chilean Prog / Fusion band PlaturnoFind albums by this artist, a guitar / keyboards / drums trio led by guitarist Felipe RiveraFind albums by this artist. Together with a couple of guest musicians (bass & violin) they present a mostly instrumental debut album of great strength and surprising musical ideas. The guitar contributes a distinctive Fusion feel, but the use of keyboards is very original and rather than play melody they provides sonic layers which are more atmospheric than melodic, resembling Space Rock. The overall effect is very unusual and considering most of the music is kept in low tempo, it sounds like an imaginary soundtrack, all truly captivating and often hypnotic. Some traces of King CrimsonFind albums by this artist influence can be found (typical of almost all Chilean bands), but this is undoubtedly their very individual statement. Considering this is their debut effort, they are certainly something to look out for in the future. Here is one more band from Chile, which certainly seems to be a place where things are happening in music in the 21st Century. Warmly recommended!

1st album by brilliant Brazilian group Raiz De PedraFind albums by this artist, which combines Prog, Jazz and Brazilian elements into a unique experience, rarely achieved by others, released now for the first time on CD. Influenced by a wide scope of music from King CrimsonFind albums by this artist to Jan GarbarekFind albums by this artist and of course Brazilian Masters like Egberto GismontiFind albums by this artist and Hermeto PascoalFind albums by this artist, their music could be compared to some of the experiments by European RIO groups, but overall they are just completely in their own world, which of course is great. The original album is expanded here with one early (pre album) track and live material taken from their 2nd (recorded live) album "Ao VivoFind albums with this title", which is sadly out of print now. Upon her return to the UK, Ross continued to record, perform and even acted in the movies. This album is a document of her one-women show at the Hampstead Theatre, where she performed a vide range of Jazz, Bossa Nova and even Progressive Rock (yes! His lyrics and production were an integral part of the magic of these milestone Prog recordings. | CHRIS SQUIRE ~ FISH OUT OF WATER (DELUXE EDITION) CASTLE 1545 (Barcode: 5050749415455) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1975 Released: 2007
1st and only album by YesFind albums by this artist bassist and founding member Chris SquireFind albums by this artist, recorded at a time when all Yes members took a break from group activity and recorded solo projects. This is a very ambitious undertaking, involving a large orchestra and a group of musicians playing music composed by Squire. The band members include Bill BrufordFind albums by this artist on drums, Patrick MorazFind albums by this artist on keyboards (both from Yes), Mel CollinsFind albums by this artist on saxophone (King CrimsonFind albums by this artist), Jimmy HastingsFind albums by this artist on flute and a few others. Squire plays bass and sings lead vocals (his voice sounding remarkably similar to Jon AndersonFind albums by this artist). The result is a classic Prog album, perhaps one of the last Prog classics of the Golden Decade and certainly more interesting than anything Yes as a group were doing at the time. The compositions are concise, but nicely developed, and there is none of the extravagant (and often pompous) typical Yes prolongation and repetition. All the players do a splendid job and Squire’s bass, often in the lead, is powerful and impressive. This new edition adds a bonus DVD, which includes two video clips filmed as promos for the album and a recent (2006) interview with Squire talking about the album. This is a must for all Yes fans and probably most Prog fans all over the world.

  | STICK MEN / DAVID CROSS ~ PANAMERICA – LIVE IN LATIN AMERICA STICK MAN 1911 (Barcode: 4260139121502) ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 2018 Released: 2019
This monumental Box Set presents recordings by the "Progressive Rock" trio Stick MenFind albums by this artist (American Chapman Stick player Tony LevinFind albums by this artist and drummer Pat MastelottoFind albums by this artist and German touch guitarist Markus ReuterFind albums by this artist), expanded for the occasion to a quartet with the addition of the British violinist David CrossFind albums by this artist (all four associated to some extent with the legendary King CrimsonFind albums by this artist of course), captured during the quartet´s Latin America tour in 2018 (sixteen concerts in ten countries).
The Box Set consists of no less than five CDs, three of which present selections illustrating different aspects of the music created by the quartet, appropriately sub-titled "Improvs", "Suites" and "Soundscapes", and the remaining two present one of the concerts in its entirety.
Although usually classified as Progressive Rock, the music of Stick Men and Cross has very little to do with what can be considered as classic Prog defined in the late 1960s / early 1970s. Over time is has become much closer affiliated with Avant-Garde Rock, Jazz, Ambient, Electronic and even contemporary Classical Music than Prog, so anybody expecting to hear something like the classic Prog stuff will be completely disenchanted. These musicians refused to stand still and perpetuate stale formulas (as most so called contemporary Prog bands do), moving ahead and embracing the possibilities opened up by new instruments, sound technology and the expansion of musical horizons and creating a completely new and original universe of musical expression.
Rather than based on the conventional musical approach of melody, harmony and rhythm, this music is all about atmosphere, soundscapes, flux and associations, which are invoked in the listener´s brain while listening to this music. There are no rules and no limitations, other than the possibilities embedded in the instruments played. The music is mostly spontaneously improvised, like in the Jazz Improvised Music idiom, but distinctly different as a result of the Rock roots obviously present herein.
However, this music comes with a price tag ;) It is definitely no for the weak hearted or for the superficial listeners. The two minutes long average attention span of today´s listeners won´t cut it in this case. This music develops slowly, sometimes painfully so, building up complex structures and convoluted relations, demanding unscrupulous concentration. Don’t try to play this music while driving!
Overall this Box Set is a marvelous document not only of the actual tour and the music played while it lasted, but more importantly a document capturing the development of the Stick Men phenomenon and the process of the development of contemporary music in general.
Beautifully conceived, performed, recorded, edited, packaged, photographed and finally released, this is a true gem and a must to all searching music lovers!
Thanks to my buddy Leonardo PavkovicFind albums by this artist, the head of MoonJuneFind albums on this label Records, the person behind much of the ambitious music still created made these days, against all odds, for sending me this musical treat. I am much obliged Sir!

  | TRYO ~ CRUDO MYLODON 007 ~ CHILE ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1997 - 1998 Released: 1998
2nd album by the Chilean Prog band TryoFind albums by this artist, which is considered as one of the most interesting South American groups. Tryo are in fact two distinct entities in one – an electric trio (guitar / bass / drums) and an acoustic trio (acoustic guitar / cello / percussion), playing two quite distant types of music. The electric version plays superb complex music fairly similar to late King CrimsonFind albums by this artist or the Swedish band AnekdotenFind albums by this artist. Heavy, somewhat distorted guitar and odd rhythm patters are the main characteristics. In complete contrast the acoustic version plays serene, delicate music, complex as well but melancholic and subdued, somewhat similar to OregonFind albums by this artist or another Swedish band Isildurs BaneFind albums by this artist. On this album the electric trio is documented performing live, while the acoustic trio provides a set of studio recorded tracks, which constitute the second part of the album. This is music of the highest caliber, not easy listening but a highly rewarding musical experience. Highly recommended.

  | TRYO ~ DOS MUNDOS CANTERA 04 ~ CHILE ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 2001 Released: 2002
4th album by this phenomenal Chilean Prog group TryoFind albums by this artist, which is undoubtedly one of the (if not “the”) most interesting ensembles of South American origin. Their consistently excellent output, as documented by their previous releases, is always a source of immense musical adventures. The combination of the rough “heavy” side of King CrimsonFind albums by this artist riffs and the exquisitely elegant chamber acoustic trio effects puts Tryo in a class of their own, way beyond most of the contemporary Prog activity. This studio album, beautifully recorded in the USA, presents both sides of the group as the title of the album suggests - Dos Mundos means Two Worlds. In their case these two worlds live in perfect harmony at all times and the transitions form one to another are smooth and make perfect sense. This stuff is really beyond any recommendation – this is contemporary music at its best: intelligent, sensitive, expressive and subtle at the same time. Essential food for the mind!
