  | BLIND FAITH ~ LIVE IN LOS ANGELES LONDON CALLING 5056 (Barcode: 5053792505616) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1969 Released: 2020
The British supergroup Blind FaithFind albums by this artist existed briefly for just a few months in 1969, but remains an icon of Classic Rock to this very day. Guitarist Eric ClaptonFind albums by this artist and drummer Ginger BakerFind albums by this artist (ex-CreamFind albums by this artist), vocalist / keyboardist Steve WinwoodFind albums by this artist (ex-TrafficFind albums by this artist) and bassist Rick GrechFind albums by this artist (ex-FamilyFind albums by this artist) recorded just one legendary album and then went on a short European tour followed by an American tour, and then disbanded.
This album is a new release of one of several bootlegs recorded during the a.m. tours, and is a bootleg of the bootlegs, as the cover work simply copes two earlier bootleg covers. The title is even more misleading, since Blind Faith never actually performed in Los Angeles, and this album presents the material recorded during their Oakland performance and other material, which of course was previously released.
But bootlegging apart, the music is of course fantastic, and even the sound quality is acceptable, considering the circumstances. Clapton’s lengthy guitar solos are a reminder of the Cream days, Winwood’s heartwrenching vocals and excellent keyboards playing are just right on, Baker is an unstoppable drumming machine and Grech, although low in the mix, is supporting amicably. In short there is everything a hardcore guitar freaks and Classic Rock addicts really love.
Overall, although there is nothing new here, if you don’t have an earlier copy of this bootleg, it is an essential piece of music history. Side Note Obiterdictum Ltd, a company based in Cyprus (oh well you know the story… copyright laws and legal issues) releases mostly live recorded radio broadcasts from the 1960s on and offers an amazing source of music which was never officially released by some of the best Classic Rock and Jazz artists. The catalogue offers five hundred releases, which is an absolute treasure chest of music history, often appearing for the first time.
Although the sound quality and sometimes also music quality range from absolutely brilliant to pretty poor, most of the material is surely listenable, especially after being remastered recently, and more importantly offers music which is not available elsewhere.
The company releases the albums under several sub-labels: Air CutsFind albums on this label, EchoesFind albums on this label, Hi HatFind albums on this label, HotspurFind albums on this label, InterferenceFind albums on this label, KeyholeFind albums on this label, KlondikeFind albums on this label, Live On VinylFind albums on this label, London CallingFind albums on this label, OrbitFind albums on this label, Rox VoxFind albums on this label and Sound StageFind albums on this label. There is no ironclad logic as to what material appears on which label, except perhaps some internal considerations by the Obiterdictum owners.
Approach with caution, but keep in mind that some of these releases are absolutely brilliant!

  | BLIND FAITH ~ LONDON HYDE PARK 1969 SANCTUARY 0090 (Barcode: 5050749500908) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1969 Released: 2005
Captured live in front of 100,000 (or more) people gathered in London’s Hyde Park, here is the world’s first “super group”, Blind FaithFind albums by this artist, playing their debut gig on June 7th, 1969. Surely a momentous occasion and a premiere piece of Rock’s history, this footage is seen here for the first time in its entirety. The group existed for just a very brief period of time and left as its legacy just one eponymous album, but its historical importance stretches way beyond that. Blind Faith was a proof that greatly talented musicians can work together, in spite of their different backgrounds and experiences, creating momentous music. The “super group” phenomenon would become ever so popular in the 1970s, but the pioneering effort that was Blind Faith would forever stay in our collective memory as one of Rock’s giant steps. The collective talents of guitarist Eric ClaptonFind albums by this artist, vocalist / keyboardist Steve WinwoodFind albums by this artist, bassist Rick GrechFind albums by this artist and drummer Ginger BakerFind albums by this artist represented the formative years and experiences of British Rock in the 1960s. They played in some of the most important bands of the 1960s: Spencer Davis GroupFind albums by this artist, Graham Bond OrganizationFind albums by this artist, CreamFind albums by this artist, TrafficFind albums by this artist and FamilyFind albums by this artist – all icons and remarkable Rock achievers. The music they created together in Blind Faith is (especially in retrospect) quite surprising and different that anything done before. Anticlimactic and relaxed, it allowed them to take a much-deserved break from the emotional (and physical) extremities they all experienced with their former groups. The change is most evident and personalized by Clapton, who left behind the high-volume, heavy, fuzz saturated guitar style he used with Cream and dramatically changed it into a subdued, relaxed and laid-back guitar playing, which was to be his new “thing”, as evident on his recordings from that moment on. He was still one of the best players around, but simply not trying to prove it any more. Winwood’s vocals, dramatic and soulful as always, were of course the group’s trademark and here he reached maturity (in spite of his young age) for the first time. Baker’s drumming is inventive, as always, but again the relaxed atmosphere allows for his incredibly melodic playing to he really heard. Grech is solid and supportive all the way, with his elegance and sensibility at their best. But of course not everything is perfect here – the gig was played in the midst of the recordings for the album and the material is obviously still being in the “working” phase, with charming imperfection and numerous glitches. Nevertheless it does work charmingly and listening to this stuff almost 40 years later still gives me the shivers. What a teat! Dolby Digital Stereo Sound, 73 minutes.

  | ROGER CHAPMAN ~ CHAPPO / LIVE IN HAMBURG BGO 824 (Barcode: 5017261208248) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1979 Released: 2008
1st and 2nd albums by UK singer Roger ChapmanFind albums by this artist, recorded following the demise of FamilyFind albums by this artist and later StreetwalkersFind albums by this artist, the two bands he led since the late 1960s and up to the late 1970s. Chapman´s decision to go solo was a logical move following his experiences with bands, which failed to gain large following, despite the fact that they played some of the best music recorded in the 1970s, both Prog and later Classic Rock. He was at the top of his vocal powers and idiosyncratic showmanship and unique throaty voice had no equals, neither at the time nor later. Chapman selected an excellent band to accompany him on his debut studio album, which included Henry SpinnettiFind albums by this artist on drums, Geoff WhitehornFind albums by this artist on guitar and the legendary Brian OdgersFind albums by this artist on bass. Ex-Family cohort Poly PalmerFind albums by this artist also participated on several tracks. Following the release of the studio album Chapman formed a touring band, christened ShortlistFind albums by this artist, which included some of the musicians who played on the studio album and added Ex-King CrimsonFind albums by this artist saxophonist Mel CollinsFind albums by this artist, which was recorded live in Germany a few month later and released as the second album. Both albums absolutely kick butt are superb examples of Classic Rock, even when recorded relatively late, when Rock was already dying. Chapman still enjoys quite a lot of popularity, especially in Europe, and continues to perform and record. For his fans these albums are an absolute must!

  | FAMILY ~ A SONG FOR ME (EXPANDED EDITION) MYSTIC 170 ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
3rd album (recorded 1970). Poli Palmer joined Family for this one and his outstanding instrumental capabilities on vibes and flute created another dimention. The tunes are more complex, with longer instrumental passages, Chapman`s voice superb as usual and the group is really a well oiled Prog machine by that time. Essential!

  | FAMILY ~ A SONG FOR ME / ANYWAY... BGO 854 (Barcode: 5017261208545) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1969 Released: 2009
3rd and 4th albums by the fantastic British Prog band FamilyFind albums by this artist, one of the most imaginative, sophisticated and excellent bands of the 1970s. Formed by vocalist Roger ChapmanFind albums by this artist and guitarist John WhitneyFind albums by this artist, who also were responsible for writing the band´s exceptional material, the original lineup included also saxophonist Jim KingFind albums by this artist, bassist Rick GrechFind albums by this artist and drummer Rob TownsendFind albums by this artist. This lineup recorded two exceptional albums: "Music In A Doll`s HouseFind albums with this title" and "Family EntertainmentFind albums with this title", which are considered as Prog masterpieces. Following the departure of Grech (to form Blind FaithFind albums by this artist) and later King, they were replaced by bassist John WeiderFind albums by this artist and multi-instrumentalist Poli PalmerFind albums by this artist respectively. Palmer´s contributions on vibraphone, flute and piano expanded the band´s sound considerably, adding subtle Jazzy nuances to the already intricate musical amalgam the band produced. Chapman´s unique vocal qualities, which had absolutely no rivalry on the British scene, combined with the superb instrumental backing turned Family into an absolute marvel, which has stayed unchallenged for the last 40 years. The new lineup recorded the two albums included here in rapid succession, using 4 live tracks on the second album to speed up the recording process, which ultimately turned out to be the only live material ever formally released by the band. The quality of the songwriting, as well as the extended instrumental work, is staggering and completely uncompromised by the passage of time. This is the Holy Grail of early Prog, regardless the fact that most Prog historians and music critics often fail to recognize the band´s contribution to the genre. This remastered edition spiced up with many bonus tracks is a must to any collector of Prog albums, as no collection can be complete without them. Absolutely essential!

  | FAMILY ~ ANYWAY... (EXPANDED EDITION) MYSTIC 171 (Barcode: 604388621620) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1970 Released: 2004
4th album (recorded 1970). As there was hardly enough time to properly write and rehearse new material in such a short time, the first 4 tracks on this one were recorded live. The rest are new studio recorded songs. Continuation of the ideas from previous albums, all beautiful and fresh. It`s amazing how good it all sounds after all these years. Brilliant!

  | FAMILY ~ BANDSTAND (EXPANDED EDITION) MYSTIC 173 ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
7th album (recorded 1972) by the same line-up as the previous album and as strong musically, with excellent compositions and superb performances. By this time Family were probably one of the top 5 Prog bands in the world, what a pity that only very few fans noticed it. If you never heard it - you must, if you did - you must hear it again!

  | FAMILY ~ BANDSTAND / IT`S ONLY A MOVIE BGO 856 (Barcode: 5017261208569) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1972 - 1973 Released: 2009
7th and 8th albums by the fantastic British Prog band FamilyFind albums by this artist, one of the most imaginative, sophisticated and excellent bands of the 1970s. "BandstandFind albums with this title" was recorded by the same excellent lineup that created its predecessor "FearlessFind albums with this title" and the live album. In spite of extensive touring and some chart success Family sadly remained somewhere in the back trenches of the turbulent Rock scene, never actually achieving the recognition they truly deserved. By the time the recorded the second album included here, which was to be their swansong, the band was clearly running out of steam as far as climbing the commercial top was concerned. Poli PalmerFind albums by this artist and John WettonFind albums by this artist left (Wetton joined King CrimsonFind albums by this artist) and were replaced by keyboardist Tony AshtonFind albums by this artist and bassist Jim CreganFind albums by this artist. The last album was much more relaxed that the previous material, but definitely still a great piece of musical ingenuity, even if the critics and many of the band´s fans thought otherwise. In retrospect its whimsical approach to songwriting and Jazzy undertones sound truly excellent. The quality of the songwriting, as well as the extended instrumental work, is staggering and completely uncompromised by the passage of time. This is the Holy Grail of early Prog, regardless the fact that most Prog historians and music critics often fail to recognize the band´s contribution to the genre. 1st part of the collected BBC recordings by the seminal early UK Prog group FamilyFind albums by this artist. 8th and last album (recorded 1973). Although Palmer and Wetton left the band by the time this was recorded, replaced by Tony Ashton and Jim Cregan, this is in evey way as strong as the other albums, even if critics at the time put it down. The music is still excellent, as is the playing, not to mention Chapo`s voice. Less Prog perhaps, but still a collosal album.

  | FAMILY ~ OLD SONGS NEW SONGS MYSTIC 193 (Barcode: 604388675227) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1970 - 1971 Released: 2006
5th album, which was sort of a compilation of tacks released on earlier albums and singles (A’s & B’s), but re-recorded, re-dubbed and re-mixed by the then- current line-up of the band (this was probably the first ever remaster), as they were not entirely satisfied with the original versions. The album tracks the band’s development between 1967 and March 1971 and emphasizes their amazing talents as songwriters and performers. Sadly Family never achieved the proper legendary status it truly deserves as one of the best UK bands on the Prog scene and hopefully the new remasters will help to expose their legacy to the young generation of Prog fans.

2nd album from 1997 by this Japanese group, which plays instrumental music well based on the R.I.O. tradition and reminiscent of groups like Magma, Univers Zero and late King Crimson. They are considered the most important band from Japan playing in this genre. This album is `tighter` and more intensive then their previous release. Quite an astonishing achievement.

  | SLY & THE FAMILY STONE ~ A WHOLE NEW THING (LIMITED DELUXE EDITION) EPIC 90277 (Barcode: 827969027721) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1967 Released: 2007
1st album by one of the most important and influential US bands from the late 1960s and early 1970s. Sly & The Family StoneFind albums by this artist were pioneers on all fronts, musical, social and political. They were the first fully integrated group with Black and White, Men and Women musicians playing side by side. They were the first group to develop Funk as a fully-fledged musical genre. They were one of the first Pop / Rock acts to use a brass section as an integral part of the group. Later on they would also spearhead the political protest (in which many rock musicians participated) against segregation and the Vietnam War. The group had an immense influence on the US music scene, far beyond the Rock circles and earned many admirers and supporters among such distinguished musical figures as Miles DavisFind albums by this artist. Their legendary Woodstock appearance was one of the highlights of the festival. In short, they were one of the cornerstones of the US musical scene.
This debut album firmly belongs to the Flower Power movement of the San Francisco scene, mixing elements of soul, funk, psychedelic influences and jazz. The different ethnic backgrounds of the members created an amalgam of styles that was truly unique and groundbreaking. The music was eclectic and sophisticated way beyond what was happening on the music scene at the time, using jazzy brass arrangements and vocal harmonies in a way never previously attempted. This beautiful new edition includes splendid liner notes and ultra-rare bonus tracks. A beautiful trip down the memory lane!

2nd album by this great band, which brought them the recognition and success they so much deserved. The title track was a major hit on the charts and eventually became one of the anthems of the Flower Power generation. The group develops here its eclectic and unique approach to music, using previously known elements in a new way. Intricate vocal and instrumental arrangements and quirky rhythm changes are still quite amazing 40 years later with the music loosing none of its charm. Of course they’d get even better with time, but this album already includes all the elements of greatness one can expect from a classic. This beautiful new edition includes splendid liner notes and ultra-rare bonus tracks. Warmly recommended.

  | SLY & THE FAMILY STONE ~ FRESH (LIMITED DELUXE EDITION) EPIC 90275 (Barcode: 827969027523) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1973 Released: 2007
6th album, which is not as dark as its predecessor and brings back some of the lighter / soul-drenched elements from the earlier albums. This was to be the band’s last Funk masterpiece and as the times were changing the musicians felt burned-out and weary, trying to stay afloat and facing serious drug abuse problems. In spite of all the difficulties and personal confusion they managed to produce a memorable set of new songs, which paved the ground for an entire generation of future Funk artists, including Stevie Wonder, Prince and many others, who would borrow heavily from these riffs. The genius of Sly and his band is still very much apparent here and the album was to become in a time another icon of the classic Funk. This beautiful new edition includes splendid liner notes and ultra-rare bonus tracks.

3rd album by this great band, released only a few month after its predecessor, but marking a remarkable development and perfection of their unique style. Although this album did not produce any hit singles, it is nevertheless an astonishing piece of music and a true classic. The band strengthens the rock / psychedelic elements considerably, with the (fuzz) guitar being much more up-front than on the two previous albums. Each and every song is perfect, although they are quite different from each other. The definition of Funk is basically all here, creating a new musical genre. Superb songwriting and perfect execution make this album an everlasting icon of the late 1960s ingenuity and inventiveness. This beautiful new edition includes splendid liner notes and ultra-rare bonus tracks. A classic!

  | SLY & THE FAMILY STONE ~ SMALL TALK (LIMITED DELUXE EDITION) EPIC 04540 (Barcode: 886970454025) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1974 Released: 2007
7th and last album by this seminal group. Although Sly released a few later recordings under his own name and the group’s moniker, none of those would resemble the glory days of the first seven classic albums with the original band. This album is a much calmer and settled down affair than its two predecessors, with optimism and hope again on the horizon. Marriage and parenthood induced some new hope, but alas for just a short while, as he was to sink deeper and deeper into drug addiction, which eventually destroyed his career. Since the mid-1990s he completely disappeared from the public eye. Although less groundbreaking and revolutionary that all the previous albums, this one closes the circle gracefully, making the entire classic seven albums chapter one of the most fascinating ones in American music history. 4th album by this great band, which represents the culmination of their unique style of psychedelic Funk, now completely refined and perfected. In addition to the superb musical performances the album also marks their strongest to date political / social statement, which reflects perfectly the atmosphere of the social revolution of the late 1960s in the US. Racial discrimination, social injustice, the Vietnam War and other issues are the subject matter of this masterpiece, which spoke directly to the heart of the young generation. The album includes several chart hits, including the song “I Want To Take You Higher”, which would become an anthem of the Woodstock generation. Definitely one of the most important US albums recorded in the 1960s and a milestone of modern music. This is an essential piece of musical education, regardless of your favorite musical inclination. 5th album by Sly & The Family StoneFind albums by this artist, which brings a dramatic change to the band’s sound. Released almost two years after its brilliant predecessor, this album again reflects the changes in the social / political atmosphere that took place, with skepticism, sarcasm and bitterness replacing hope, brotherhood and happiness. With the Flower Power and Hippie ideology dissolving soon after Woodstock and the harsh reality of drug abuse and addiction among rock stars becoming a frightful reality, the band (and their leader in particular) faced an increasing difficulty to create a cohesive piece of music. Finally after endless sessions the material for the new album was assembled, producing a dark and bleak musical mosaic. The music is still brilliant in every respect, but it is dense and brutal. The lyrics include harsh social commentary, which is often shocking. In retrospect the album is another musical milestone defining (or re-defining) Funk and paving the way for many future artists, who would build on these foundations. This beautiful new edition includes splendid liner notes and ultra-rare bonus tracks.

  | STREETWALKERS ~ DOWNTOWN FLYERS BGO 542 (Barcode: 5017261205421) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1975 Released: 2002
2nd album by British band StreetwalkersFind albums by this artist, founded by two ex-FamilyFind albums by this artist founding members vocalist Roger ChapmanFind albums by this artist and guitarist John WhitneyFind albums by this artist, after Family disbanded. Strictly speaking, it was the first album released under the Streetwalkers moniker, since the previous album was released as Chapman-WhitneyFind albums by this artist and was only entitled "StreetwalkersFind albums with this title", but in time that album was commonly accepted as the first Streetwalkers album and is referred to as such. Although Chapman and Whitney consciously wished to separate themselves from the Prog image associated with Family when they founded the new band, trying to create a more "straight-forward" Rock band, many of the elements which made Family one of the best and most unique bands were inherited. Chapman´s absolutely distinctive voice and vocal delivery was by itself a sufficient factor to distinguish the band from any other and with Whitney´s subtle guitar work and exceptional talent to write tunes that were both rhythmically and melodically quite apart from most Rock songs made Streetwalkers a great band. They drafted another singer / guitarist Bob TenchFind albums by this artist (ex-Jeff BeckFind albums by this artist group), who was responsible for the Rocky side of things and an excellent rhythm section, which kept the band kicking. Guest keyboardist also participated in the recording to expand the group´s sound. Unfortunately Streetwalkers somehow never really "made it", with their albums selling poorly, which eventually led to their demise, but their recorded legacy remains to this very day as an excellent example of sophisticated British Rock, which combines quality music with great delivery. This is a must to all Family fans, who will find the music a logical continuation to the Family´s output.

  | STREETWALKERS ~ LIVE BGO 606 (Barcode: 5017261206060) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1977 Released: 2004
5th and last album by British band StreetwalkersFind albums by this artist, founded by two ex-FamilyFind albums by this artist founding members vocalist Roger ChapmanFind albums by this artist and guitarist John WhitneyFind albums by this artist, after Family disbanded. Recorded during the very last months the band existed and released "posthumously", this album (originally a double LP) splendidly sums up the band´s three years of activity, presenting them at what they did best: kick ass. On stage Streetwalkers were a mean Rock machine, delivering their music with vengeance and perfect professionalism. Chapman´s unequalled vocal delivery is of course the focal point, but the instrumentalists provide a superb background for his genius. The music, mostly written by Chapman / Whitney, is sophisticated enough to be interesting at all times, but also rocky enough to deliver a care-free straight-ahead exterior appeal, which Rock music projects. This is a splendid farewell present to the band´s loyal fans and followers, which unfortunately were not strong enough in numbers to ensure the band´s success, especially in view of the fact that the musical trend at the time was rapidly shifting towards the anti-musical revolution of Punk. In retrospect this is a great showcase of the last glorious days of British Rock. The album is an absolute must to all Family fans, but should appeal to most dedicated British Rock lovers, especially after being unavailable for so long.

CD2 recorded in 1977 presents eleven tracks and the lineup includes Tench, bassist Michael FeatFind albums by this artist, drummer David DowleFind albums by this artist and keyboardist Brian JohnstoneFind albums by this artist. Due to time limitations, it misses one of the tracks present on the DVD.
The DVD includes all the material on both CDs and one additional track, as mentioned above.
Chapman and Whitney (with some help from Tench) were incredible songwriters, which is clearly evident herein, and Streetwalkers performed only original songs, as they always had plenty of material to choose from. Chapman’s incredible and highly idiosyncratic vocal performances are definitely some of the finest in British Rock music.
Overall, this is a great piece of Rock history by one of the best British Rock / Blues-Rock performers, which is always a great pleasure to revisit and more importantly remember. The Family / Streetwalkers legacy is truly monumental, sadly somewhat underappreciated IMHO. Check it out for yourself!

  | STREETWALKERS ~ RED CARD / VICIOUS BUT FAIR BGO 669 (Barcode: 5017261206695) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1975 - 1976 Released: 2005
3rd and 4th albums by British band StreetwalkersFind albums by this artist, founded by two ex-FamilyFind albums by this artist founding members vocalist Roger ChapmanFind albums by this artist and guitarist John WhitneyFind albums by this artist, after Family disbanded. The band continues to develop their strength and no-nonsense approach on these two albums, keep a steady core lineup of Chapman, Whitney and Bob TenchFind albums by this artist, with Chapman / Whitney providing most of the material, continuing their cooperation since the early days of Family. "Red CardFind albums with this title" is the band´s strongest album, with both the quality of the material and energetic delivery reaching an artistic peak. For "Vicious But FairFind albums with this title", their last studio album, the band added a fifth member, keyboardist Brian JohnstoneFind albums by this artist, but kept the basic direction. Chapman´s vocal qualities remain exceptional during the entire Streetwalkers period and he truly deserves the status of one of Britain´s most unique and talented vocalists. Both albums are prime examples of British Rock at its prime, with superb musicianship and total dedication and in spite of their lack of success at the time they were released, true icon of the era. These albums are a must to all Family fans, which should see in Streetwalkers a direct extension of the Family legacy and re-visit these recordings to find out how well they withstand the tides of time.
