  | ATOMIC ROOSTER ~ ON AIR: LIVE AT THE BBC & OTHER TRANSMISSIONS REPERTOIRE 1336 (Barcode: 4009910133620) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1970 - 1972 Released: 2018
This is an archival album by the British Progressive Rock group Atomic RoosterFind albums by this artist, founded by keyboardist / composer Vincent CraneFind albums by this artist. The album offers a collection of live material, recorded for the BBC Radio 1 and German and Belgian TV. The two CDs present all the audio material and the DVD presents the TV video material, which means that the audio tracks are duplicated as the soundtrack of the video material. Altogether this package offers eighteen audio tracks, most of which were composed by Crane, and fourteen video tracks (two of them duplicated as different camera positions). The majority of the material was captured in 1972 with just two songs recorded in 1970 and another two in 1971, by older lineups of the group. Most of the material is performed by the lineup that features Chris FarloweFind albums by this artist on lead vocals, Crane on Hammond organ and other keyboards, Steve BoltonFind albums by this artist on guitar and Ric ParnellFind albums by this artist on drums, the lineup that recorded the "Made In EnglandFind albums with this title" album. All the music was meticulously remastered and offers a superb sound quality.
Crane was undoubtedly one of the absolute top British Prog keyboardists of the time (late 1960s and early 1970s), every bit as good as Keith EmersonFind albums by this artist, but without the bloated pretentiousness, and stylistically close to Brian AugerFind albums by this artist. His work with Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist was absolutely light years ahead of the time and his Atomic Rooster years established also his position as a composer, who managed to come up with some of the most impressive Rock riffs ever. His imagination and inventiveness were absolutely unique.
Farlowe, who as my readers know already, I consider as one of the top Prog vocalists ever, offers the entire range of his sensibilities from Soul, Rhythm And Blues, Rock and Jazz, and his performances here are the best support to my claims as to his importance. Bolton and Parnell also perform spotlessly and with great energy, precision and above all god taste.
Overall this is a superb opportunity to revisit some of Prog´s best moments, which still offered bold statements and iron balls, before the genre went completely into self-pity, lethargic excursions into nowhere and above all everlasting boredom. This music is full of zest, ingenuity and nontrivial musical adventures and is a wonderful time capsule preserving these moments for posterity.
Early British Prog enthusiasts will find this collection essential and filling a gap in the Atomic Rooster story with material that is not readily available. As usual with the RepertoireFind albums on this label label, this album is excellently packaged and offers knowledgeable liner notes by their resident music historian Chris WelchFind albums by this artist. Wholeheartedly recommended!

  | ARTHUR BROWN ~ BROWN, BLACK & BLUE LEMON 148 (Barcode: 5013929774827) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1980 Released: 2009
This rare album by British maverick Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist with ex-Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist / Mothers Of InventionFind albums by this artist and Captain BeefheartFind albums by this artist / Magic BandFind albums by this artist drummer Jimmy Carl BlackFind albums by this artist, documents the period when Brown spent a few years in the US (mostly Austin, Texas) in the early 1980s. After meeting Black in Austin the two decided to record an album with local Austin musicians, which was dedicated to early Rhythm And Blues material, re-vamped for the occasion. Superbly executed by all the musicians involved, with Brown´s vocal abilities at their full glory, the album is a true lost and forgotten gem, which surely deserves to be re-discovered. It shows not only the deep roots of Rock but also the versatility and resourcefulness of Brown as a musician. Originally released on LP in 1988 (eight years after it was recorded) and out of circulation for many years, this is the album´s first CD release, making it available (and affordable) to a much wider circle of Brown´s fans.

  | ARTHUR BROWN ~ CHISHOLM IN MY BOSOM ESOTERIC 2299 (Barcode: 5013929739925) ~ UK ~ Pop & Rock Recorded: 1977 Released: 2011
This little know album by the great British maverick Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist was completely ignored at the time of its release, but in retrospect it shows how versatile and brilliant Brown was with everything he touched. Recorded on a tight budget, Brown was able to collect around him some excellent musicians, including old friend from The Crazy World Of Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Vincent CraneFind albums by this artist and ex-Kingdom ComeFind albums by this artist guitarist Andrew DalbyFind albums by this artist. Brown wrote all but two songs on this album (including the 23 minutes long title track), with Dalby contributing one and a new version of "I Put A Spell On You", which was also featured on his debut album. Brown´s vocal performances are, as usual, unparalleled and they always work for me. The music is perhaps less Prog oriented that the earlier solo and Kingdom Come material, but still is definitely worth listening to, especially if Brown´s enchanting voice and his unique dramatics are your cup of tea. A must to all Arthur Brown Fans!

  | ARTHUR BROWN ~ DANCE (EXPANDED EDITION) ESOTERIC 2847 (Barcode: 5013929484795) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1975 Released: 2023
This is a reissue / remaster of an album by British vocalist / songwriter Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist, recorded with an excellent team including guitarists Andy DolbyFind albums by this artist and Barry ClarkFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Chris NicholsFind albums by this artist, bassist Steve YorkFind albums by this artist, drummer Charlie CharlesFind albums by this artist, percussionist Eddie EdwardsFind albums by this artist and saxophonist George KhanFind albums by this artist. The original album presents eleven tracks, six of which are original songs by Brown, two are by Dolby, and the rest are interpretations of songs by others. The expanded edition adds six bonus tracks recorded live by the BBC, all of which appear on the original album.
Brown is one of my all-time favorite British artists, whom I have been following since the late 1960s. His idiosyncratic vocal abilities and incredible musicality is completely unique and his cross-genre explorations, which include everything between Rock, Progressive Rock, Avant-Garde Rock, etc., always spiced with Jazzy underline accents and textures, as well as complete disregard of conventions and Artistic compromises, have always been a source of pure delight.
This album is disguised under the “Dance” moniker, but in fact is a wonderful collection of brilliant songs and clever, often satirical lyrics, which are completely timeless. The excellent remaster brings the music up to date and the saxophone solos by Khan are alone worth the price of the album.
Overall, it is great to see this, mostly forgotten, album back to circulation, and it is a true joy to listen to it again. Still alive and kicking, but sadly mostly in the shadows, Brown deserves to be listened to and learned from, as he remains a true icon of British / European Rock.

  | ARTHUR BROWN ~ LEGBOOT GONZO 418 (Barcode: 5060230868752) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 2002 Released: 2017
This is a reissue of a live acoustic album by the British vocalist / songwriter Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist, recorded during his performances as a supporting act for Robert PlantFind albums by this artist in 2002. He is accompanied by guitarist Chris BryantFind albums by this artist and multi-instrumentalist (violin, dulcimer, guitar, bass pedals) Nick PynnFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine tracks, mostly his original songs and some covers.
The album was released originally to be sold during gigs and has several very limited editions, some actually including hand-made covers. All of those were of course sold out and are now collectors’ items. This edition is simply an attempt to keep this unique document alive, and thank God for this. The album’s title is of course a pun on the “official bootleg” phenomenon, i.e. “Legal Bootleg”.
Brown (aged 82 at the time of writing) is to me one of the greatest unsung heroes of the British Rock scene, and despite his minor period of modest success, he remains relatively little known and seldom heralded, despite his absolutely supernatural talents as a singer of incredible vocal range and technique and sublime songwriter. His collected recorded legacy stands out as one of the mightiest since the late 1960s and his uncompromising genius is sadly often too much to swallow for music listeners and critics alike. His most recent recordings were made just a couple of years ago, when he was 80 years old, which is absolutely astounding, and I hope to hear more from him yet, God willing.
Overall, this absolutely stunning and almost completely undiscovered album, is an absolute jewel, perfectly recorded and documenting rare acoustic performances by Brown, which are unparalleled. Not easy to find, but a must to every Brown fan and obviously wholeheartedly recommended!

  | ARTHUR BROWN ~ LONG LONG ROAD MAGNETIC EYE 088 (Barcode: 884388732223) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 2021 Released: 2022
If there are unsung heroes in Rock, the British vocalist / songwriter / bandleader Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist is perhaps the most notable of them. At the remarkable age of eighty (he was born in 1942), he still makes music more exciting than all the musicians, half or quarter his age, seem to be able to come up with these days. Totally unjustly mostly considered as a “one hit wonder” as a result of the success of his magnificent song “Fire”, back in 1968, his frenzy activity since and his remarkable recorded output puts most of the competition in deep shame, with dozens of albums as a solo artist, leader of bands (see Kingdom ComeFind albums by this artist in the early 1970s) and collaborative recordings, all simply brilliant, regardless or perhaps as expected, simply too good to be commercially successful. Brown managed to ignore the passing of time more extraordinarily than most and his writing talent and vocal ability remain completely untouched, with sublime operatic vocal range and superb power of expression. I am sort of proud of myself for staying faithful to his charm over the years and following his releases closely, even if I was one of the very few music critics doing this.
This album was created together with multi-instrumentalist Rik PattenFind albums by this artist, with whom Brown collaborated almost a decade earlier on the “The Magic HatFind albums with this title” album, who plays all the instruments on this album (a plethora of them), leaving the vocal duties to Brown. All the eight songs (one in two parts) were co-written by the two and they offer a superb mixture of the entire Rock idiom sub-genres, including Blues, Psychedelia, Rock Ballads and the usual Jazzy touch, which seems to be Brown’s alter ego and perhaps is one of the reasons I love his music so much.
Overall, this is a superb Rock album, fresh and kicking, with a lot of added values rarely found anywhere else, a Jazzy feel and those magnificent screamy vocals, it just does not get any better as far as Rock is concerned. Great to see Brown alive and active and, as usual, waiting for his next album. I just can’t recommend that one enough I suppose…Do yourself a favor and grab a copy!

  | ARTHUR BROWN ~ MONSTER`S BALL CLEOPATRA 2214 (Barcode: 889466221422) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 2022 Released: 2022
At the remarkable age of eighty (he was born in 1942), British vocalist / songwriter / bandleader Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist still makes music more exciting than all the musicians, half or quarter his age, seem to be able to come up with these days. Amazingly, this is his second release in 2022 and the unstoppable energy and creativity knows no borders.
This time Brown abandons his usual formula of recording his own songs, and ventures into an insane world of covers of some Rock classics, all related to Halloween-like show about hell, fire, mayhem, monsters, zombies, etc., with a wink of course. The album presents thirteen (what else) songs, only three of which were penned by Brown, including a new version of his mega-hit “Fire” from 1968, but include also songs by CreamFind albums by this artist, Pink FloydFind albums by this artist and many other iconic Rock groups.
Brown is accompanied by an incredible gathering of Rock superstars: Ian PaiceFind albums by this artist, Steve HillageFind albums by this artist, Carmine AppiceFind albums by this artist, Brian AugerFind albums by this artist, to mention but a few, all veterans of the scene who still prove they can kick a butt or two. The music rocks and is a great fun to listen to from start to finish, despite the potentially disastrous “various artists” gathering, which often fails miserably. Obviously Brown’s personality and incredible vocal power and producer Alan DaveyFind albums by this artist’s skills simply worked out.
Overall, this is an incredibly entertaining Classic Rock production, which works like magic and is able to offer quality music in the good old Rock idiom, which is almost completely absent from the scene these days. I really hope to be in Brown’s form when I get to be his age and in the meantime I can only recommend this great album to all of us geriatric people, who are the last survivors able to tell good music from trash.

  | ARTHUR BROWN ~ RADIO SESSIONS 1968 / 1972 / 1975 GONZO 299 (Barcode: 5060230865775) ~ UK ~ Pop & Rock Recorded: 1968 - 1975 Released: 2016
This is an archival release that presents radio sessions recorded by the British Rock vocalist / composer Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist and his various groups. The first five tracks recorded in 1968 are by The Crazy World Of Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist, the next four tracks recorded in 1971 and 1972 are by his group Kingdom ComeFind albums by this artist and the last five tracks recorded in 1975 are credited only to his name. The booklet gives no information about the sources of the recordings, most of which were obviously done by the BBC. Judging by the sound quality of the tracks they are all home recording of BBC broadcasts rather than the original radio recordings. Most of the material consists of original songs by Brown.
The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown tracks are of course live replicas of the tracks from the debut album, brilliantly performed by organist Vincent CraneFind albums by this artist, bassist Nick GreenwoodFind albums by this artist and drummer Drachen TheakerFind albums by this artist and the charismatic vocals by Brown are absolute classics. These tracks were recently released on the Super Deluxe Edition reissue of the debut album.
The Kingdom Come tracks are superb Progressive Rock material originating from the group´s debut album "Galactic Zoo DossierFind albums with this title" and their third album "JourneyFind albums with this title", which puts a big question mark on the given dates of the recording as the third album was only released in 1973. These tracks were probably recorded in 1973 and released unofficially before.
The last batch of tracks was recorded when Brown released his solo album "Dance" and presents him performing Pop / Rock material, but with his usual twist, brilliant vocal delivery and excellent instrumental backup, which includes saxophonist George KhanFind albums by this artist and other great players. As far as I could find out, these tracks are previously unreleased.
Overall this is a mixed bag, pretty sloppily put together and suffering from pretty bad sound quality at times on one hand, but offering some brilliant music on the other hand. Approach with caution, but don´t ignore if you are a fan of Arthur Brown!

  | ARTHUR BROWN ~ SPEAK NO TECH / REQUIEM LEMON 158 (Barcode: 5013929775824) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1981 - 1982 Released: 2010
British singer / songwriter Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist, a marvelous maverick and eccentric who constantly pushed the limits of Avant-Garde Rock, was also one of the first artist to embrace the new computer technology, which arrived on the music-making scene in the early 1980s. Following the unexpected success Brown enjoyed in the late 1960s with his hit song "Fire", he later founded the excellent Kingdom ComeFind albums by this artist, one of the best British progressive bands of the early 1970s. By the early 1980s Brown relocated for a while to the USA, where he recorded these two albums with the help of two legendary local producers Craig LeonFind albums by this artist and Earle MankeyFind albums by this artist, both pioneers of the computer-aided studio work. Although I can be hardly considered a fan of the dreadful 1980s computerized sound, which eventually emerged from the pioneering efforts, these two albums are quite unique and remain interesting 30 years later. Brown´s mesmerizing vocals and weirdly wonderful lyrics are still unsurpassed and the use of computer sounds and drum machines is truly groundbreaking here. These two albums were reissued on CD in the early 1990s, but have disappeared again soon after. This new edition, expanded with bonus tracks, is a proper tribute to one of Britain´s true musical visionaries. Not for everybody, but Brown´s fans will surely love to see this material available again. Recommended!

  | ARTHUR BROWN ~ STRANGELANDS ESOTERIC 2258 (Barcode: 5013929735828) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1969 - 1970 Released: 2011
The material included on this album was supposed to be the 2nd album by British singer Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist and his group called The Crazy World Of Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist. Although recorded shortly after the debut, it remained unreleased for almost 20 years and remains mostly completely unknown to most music lovers. The material is mostly Avant-Garde and years ahead of its time, so the fact that it was rejected at the time is no surprise, but in retrospect this is fascinating music. Emphasizing instrumental improvisations and a less harmonic music and Brown´s manic vocals the overall effect is absolutely stunning, somewhere between Psychedelics and Jazz. Several brilliant musicians participate, including legendary saxophonist George KhanFind albums by this artist and drummer Drachen TheakerFind albums by this artist. I´m sorry but I simply love every minute of this stuff and proclaim once again that Brown was / is one of the greatest British music geniuses in spite the fact that very few people share my view on this. Your loss mates!

  | ARTHUR BROWN ~ TANTRIC LOVER VOICEPRINT 256 ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
This is a surprising album from 2000, after several years of silence, from the master musician who shocked the Prog scene with the revolutionary Crazy World album in the early days of his career. It shows a gentle and more introvert side of Brown as a singer and songwriter, and the acoustic instrumentation brings out other qualities in his voice then we know from his past recordings. Very interesting indeed.

  | ARTHUR BROWN ~ TANTRIC LOVER LEMON 147 (Barcode: 5013929774728) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 2000 Released: 2009
This criminally overlooked album by British maverick Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist marks his return to active musical life following the stroke he suffered, while on stage, in 1994. Older and more relaxed, Brown got together a superb acoustic band to accompany him on this album, which featured such distinguished players as drummer Malcolm MortimoreFind albums by this artist (Gentle GiantFind albums by this artist), guitarist Rik PattenFind albums by this artist, bassist / cellist Stan AdlerFind albums by this artist and several others. The set of twelve new songs written by Brown are all brilliant both musically and lyrically and his vocal delivery, especially against the acoustic background, is breathtaking. Brown´s voice seems to be completely untouched by time and his almost operatic range and intelligent dynamics is second to none. Since the original release of this album (on the VoiceprintFind albums on this label label) is now out of print, this is a great opportunity to get to know this marvelous album – don´t miss it as it is as good as his legendary debut recording, quite different of course, but equally brilliant. | ARTHUR BROWN ~ THE CRAZY WORLD OF ARTHUR BROWN (50TH ANNIVERSARY SUPER DELUXE EDITION) CHERRY RED AMERICA 001 (Barcode: 760137187219) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1965 - 1968 Released: 2018
This is a Box Set reissue, marking the 50th Anniversary of the release of one of the greatest Rock albums of all times, the debut release by the British vocalist / songwriter Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist and his group called The Crazy World Of Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist, which included organist / composer / arranger Vincent CraneFind albums by this artist, bassist Sean GreenwoodFind albums by this artist and drummer Drachen TheakerFind albums by this artist. The Box Set includes the original LP (stereo mix) and 3 CDs, as follows:
CD1 presents the stereo mix version of the original album (eleven tracks) and seven bonus tracks originating from A and B sides of singles, which are mostly non-album tracks, except for two versions of “Fire”.
CD2 presents the mono mix version of the original album (eleven tracks) and nine bonus tracks, which are alternate versions or alternate mixes.
CD3 presents live radio broadcasts, six from BBC sessions and four from other radio sources, as well as four early recordings from 1965-1966.
The music was all original and composed by Crane, who also wrote the orchestral arrangements, and Brown contributed the lyrics, except for two covers, which were brilliantly arranged to fit the sound and concept of the album. Side A of the original album was a six-part continuous suite.
In retrospect, this album was a milestone of British Rock / Psychedelia and to some degree also early Jazz-Rock Fusion. Crane’s brilliant compositions and arrangements, which are soaked in Jazzy undercurrents and Brown’s theatrical, almost operatic vocals are absolutely unprecedented and pioneering in their sheer chutzpa of discarding stylistic limitations, norms and conventions.
Despite the fact that the album was rather poorly recorded (the mono mixes are superior IMHO), which no remaster can revive or restore, the originality, energy and pure Genius of the music keeps it alive and kicking and fifty-five years later it remains completely unblemished. Brown continues to make brilliant music to this very day, but sadly remains underappreciated and his Art has a limited exposure, which is a crying shame.
The premature death of Crane in 1989 robbed the world of one of the greatest organists and composers in Rock, and similarly the death of Theaker in 1992 took away a highly imaginative and original drummer.
Overall, this is a superb tribute to one of the greatest Rock albums of all time, which lost nothing of its originality and sheer imaginative artistry in the span of the fifty-five years since it was released. It is a unique, one-time phenomenon in music, which should be celebrated by music lovers the world over, although Brown continues to make brilliant music to this very day, sadly not able to reach a wide audience he truly deserves. A timeless classic!

Only album by one of Britain´s most eclectic and often misunderstood recording artist, singer Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist and his first outfit appropriately called The Crazy World Of Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist, which to this day remains as one of the greatest early Prog / Psychedelic albums ever recorded. The group was basically a trio and included the brilliant organist Vincent CraneFind albums by this artist and drummer Drachen TheakerFind albums by this artist, Bassist Sean NicholasFind albums by this artist was used during the recording of the album, which also included brilliant orchestral arrangements done by Crane. One of the tracks of the album called "Fire" was released as a single and achieved an unexpected chart success both in UK and USA, bringing Brown and his mates a brief stardom status, but the band fell apart shortly after the album was recorded, sadly never realizing its full potential, which was truly amazing. Dominated by Brown´s frantic, but beautifully dramatic and virtuosic vocal delivery and Crane´s superb organ playing, based on Jazz influenced improvisations, the band sounded unlike no other band at the time. The music, written mostly by Crane with the exception of a couple Rock classics, is absolutely astounding and fits Brown´s lyrics perfectly. Brown´s delivery is theatrical and manic at times, but always sensitive and of outstanding quality. The album is a relic of the era and an absolutely essential listening experience. This deluxe edition adds a plethora of bonus tracks, many previously never released on record. An absolute masterpiece!

  | ARTHUR BROWN ~ THE VOICE OF LOVE COTE BASQUE 07002 (Barcode: 823566433125) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 2006 Released: 2007
This is a criminally overlooked album by the great British Rock singer / songwriter / bandleader Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist, the unsung hero of the British scene. The album was recorded with multi-instrumentalist Nick PynnFind albums by this artist, who also arranged most of the songs, guitarist Rik PattenFind albums by this artist and drummer Mark St. JohnFind albums by this artist, who arranged two of the songs. A couple of additional musicians also participate. The album presents eleven songs, eight of which are originals by Brown and three are arrangements of songs written by others, including a stunning version of the legendary “Kites”, which was a hit for Simon Dupree and the Big SoundFind albums by this artist (i.e. early Gentle GiantFind albums by this artist) in 1967.
The music, which is almost completely acoustic and offers a somewhat Folkish sound, is mostly ballad oriented and quite atypical of Brown’s extrovert / extravagant image. It presents a unique opportunity to hear Brown as a lyrical vocalist, but obviously his idiosyncratic vocal characteristics are all firmly present, including the falsetto / vibrato parts, which show his operatic-like abilities. But all in all the album is a beautiful collection of “love songs”, with the Brownish twist of course.
Overall, this is a brilliant and sadly obscure album by one of the most talented and multifaceted heroes of the British Rock scene, which exposes the gentler side of his musical personality. Loaded with great melodies and excellent instrumental work, this is a gem from start to finish, and since it can still be found (with some difficulty), I wholeheartedly advice to grab a copy while still available.

The album was recorded with drummer Mark BrzezickiFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Josh PhilipsFind albums by this artist (ex-Procol HarumFind albums by this artist), bassist Richard StudholmeFind albums by this artist and guitarist Roger ManningFind albums by this artist. The album includes two CDs: CD1 presents a thirteen-tracks musical suite, while CD2 presents a recitation of the fifty+ minutes long story, which is the concept behind the suite. All the music is co-credited to Brown, Brzezicki and Philips.
The music is absolutely brilliant, exactly what one might expect from Brown, with great melodic Rock oriented songs, great Brass arrangements, superb Hammond organ solos and everything needed to make it a gas. Brown is in incredible form and so are all the musicians, and the resulting album has not a dull moment. Brown’s operatic / theatrical vocals lost nothing of their charm over time and the album proves that he was active “behind the scenes” continuously over the years, in complete contrast to his “one hit wonder” status.
Overall, this is a wonderful Rock album, full of great songs and superb instrumental work, which should keep every Rock / Prog fan absolutely happy. Unfortunately, the album disappeared into the haze many years ago, but it is certainly worth searching for. Satisfaction guaranteed – there is only one Arthur Brown out there and he is an absolute wizard.

1st album from 1971. After the `Crazy World of Arthur Brown` collapsed, with Crane and Palmer leaving to start Atomic Rooster, Brown founded his second group called Kingdom Come, whch was even more revolutionary and outrageous then the first. Mixing elements of Avant-Garde, psychedelia, Prog and Jazz the group produced a remarkable sound years ahead of its time. It was dark, dense, complex and always bitterly sarcastic and hillarious. Some great playing and Brown`s vocal virtuosity make this a rare treat.

Following the release of the second album, the band´s personnel shifted slightly and Brown was joined by guitarist Andrew DalbyFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Victor PerianoFind albums by this artist and bassist Phil ShuttFind albums by this artist, creating a superb outfit capable of playing outstanding music in spite of the fact that they had no drummer and used electronic drums for the job – the first band ever to do so. Combining elements of Art-Rock, Prog, Psychedelia, Avant-Garde, Jazz and even Classical, this was music eons ahead of its time. This music is revolutionary and outrageous, intelligent and funny, full of complex compositions with frequent rhythm shifts and multi-melodic themes; in short dazzling every step of the way. Brown´s unique vocal delivery adds another dimension to the already multifaceted package. Sadly the music was not appreciated at the time of its release and only decades later discovered as a true gem, as rightly deserved. Brilliant stuff and a must for every Prog fan!

  | CRAZY WORLD OF ARTHUR BROWN ~ GYPSY VOODOO NOT ON LABEL (Barcode: 825479971626) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 2019 Released: 2019
This is an album by veteran British singer / songwriter / bandleader Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist and his reinstated (some five decades after its initial formation) ensemble The Crazy World Of Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist. Brown´s partner in this new incarnation of the ensemble is bassist / studio owner Mike MorganFind albums by this artist. Guitarist Carter AirringtonFind albums by this artist, drummer Pat ManskeFind albums by this artist and (perhaps? As the album´s credits are not exactly clear about that) other musicians also take part in the recording. The album presents ten original songs, eight of which are co-credited to Brown and Morgan and two tracks are new versions of songs from the debut album from 1968. This album follows the "Zim Zam ZimFind albums with this title" album released five years earlier.
The music is less eclectic this time and offers a strong American Rock flavor, probably due to the fact it was recorded in Texas with American musicians, and is closer to Americana than to the Progressive Rock / Jazz-Rock vistas, which characterized Brown´s music in the past, with almost no traces of the theatrical Rock, which has been Brown´s modus operandi for decades. For listeners who have followed Brown´s activities over the years, like yours truly, this is a rather disappointing turn of the cards.
What is encouraging, however surprising it might sound, is the great form of Brown´s voice and his vocal abilities, which lost nothing of their charm and attraction over time. His power of expression is completely intact and remains one of the most unique and idiosyncratic on the scene. Combined with the strong melodic drive of the songs and the great instrumental work (especially the guitar), the album is still a nice listening experience, albeit less exciting than one might have hoped for.
Overall this album proves that Brown is still a formidable performer and music maker, as always operating on the fringe of popular music. With his stamina and creative juices intact, he is contributing valuable music where generation of much younger people remain brain dead.

This is an album by veteran British singer / songwriter / bandleader Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist and his reinstated (some five decades after its initial formation) ensemble The Crazy World Of Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist. Brown´s partners in this new incarnation of the ensemble are bassist Jim MortimoreFind albums by this artist and drummer Samuel WalkerFind albums by this artist, both of which play a plethora of additional instruments. Twelve guest musicians also take part in the recording. The album presents ten original songs, all co-credited to the three members of the ensemble.
The music is an eclectic collection of many influences including a strong Jazz-Rock presence and some Progressive Rock vistas, but overall all kept within the theatrical Rock, which has been Brown´s modus operandi for decades. For listeners who have followed Brown´s activities over the years, like yours truly, there are few musical surprises herein.
What is surprising however is the great form of Brown´s voice and his vocal abilities, which lost nothing of their charm and attraction over time. His power of expression is completely intact and remains one of the most unique and idiosyncratic on the scene. Combined with the strong melodic drive of the songs and the interesting instrumentation, the album is a fascinating listening experience, albeit not for everybody.
Overall this album proves that Brown is still a formidable performer and music maker, as always operating on the fringe of popular music. With his stamina and creative juices intact, he is contributing valuable music where generation of much younger people remain brain dead. Well done!

  | GREENSLADE ~ GREENSLADE WOUNDED BIRD 2698 (Barcode: 664140269828) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1972 Released: 2006
1st album by the phenomenal Prog group GreensladeFind albums by this artist created by keyboards wizard Dave GreensladeFind albums by this artist, following the demise of ColosseumFind albums by this artist Mk. I. Greenslade joined forces with original Colosseum bassist Tony ReevesFind albums by this artist, a remarkable player with strong jazz background, who played both the electric and acoustic bass with elegance and sensitivity. To complete the group they enlisted the great (and sadly overlooked and under appreciated) drummer Andrew McCullochFind albums by this artist, who played with Manfred MannFind albums by this artist, King CrimsonFind albums by this artist (LizardFind albums with this title) and Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist and since the mid-1970s disappeared from the music scene almost completely. The fourth member of the group was the keyboardist / vocalist Dave LawsonFind albums by this artist (Episode SixFind albums by this artist, StackridgeFind albums by this artist), an excellent musician who handled the complex compositions with flying colors. Greenslade, a prolific composer, wrote most of the material for the group, with some marginal contributions by Reeves and Lawson (who handled the lyrics). He used a wide range of keyboards between acoustic piano, organ and synthesizers, creating complex and beautiful sound layers, amply supported by his fellow band members. The debut album is a classic showcase of Prog at its best: great melodies, superb instrumental work and a wide range of influences including jazz, blues, rock and classical music. A beautiful sleeve work by Roger DeanFind albums by this artist. An absolute must for any serious Prog lover.

  | ALAN PARSONS PROJECT ~ THE COMPLETE ALBUMS COLLECTION SONY 886978905529 (Barcode: 886978905529) ~ UK ~ Pop & Rock Recorded: 1976 - 1986 Released: 2014
This Box Set collects the ten albums recorded between 1976 and 1986 by the British producer / sound engineer (Pink FloydFind albums by this artist´s "The Dark Side Of The MoonFind albums with this title" and many others) / keyboardist / composer Alan ParsonsFind albums by this artist and his ensemble called The Alan Parsons ProjectFind albums by this artist. In addition it also includes the previously unreleased instrumental album "The Sicilian DefenseFind albums with this title" recorded in 1979, which was shelved at the time and never saw the light of day until now.
Although the ensemble was named after Parsons, in fact it was basically a duo project, which combined the talents of Parsons and keyboardist / songwriter / composer Eric WoolfsonFind albums by this artist (who died in 2009). The other members of the ensemble changed frequently over time and only a few of them appeared on a more permanent basis. Over the years the ensemble was fronted by many different lead vocalists, often several of which appeared on the same album, which was quite a unique concept at the time. Some of the less expected names include Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist, Gary BrookerFind albums by this artist or Colin BlunstoneFind albums by this artist. Another unusual fact about the ensemble is that it never performed live during the original period of their existence.
The music of the ensemble moved through several shifts over the years. Initially it was considered a Prog act, with their early album being more or less concept related. Later on the music became more Pop / Rock oriented and much less ambitious. One of the strongest characteristics of the music was the use of extensive orchestral arrangements, which always gave the music a strong European flavor, connected to the Classical Romantic tradition.
The Alan Parsons Project is remembered by some remarkable songs, which are evergreens and the unique musical and sound production, which of course was Parson´s main area of interest. The typically British sense of humor and delicate, intricate, cultural hints portray the music at its best moments, although the overall output is rather unequal. Definitely worth revisiting!

  | TOMORROW ~ TOMORROW (EXPANDED EDITION) EMI 724349881921 (Barcode: 724349881921) ~ UK ~ Psychedelic Pop & Rock Recorded: 1967 - 1968 Released: 1999
This is the remastered and expanded reissue of the only album by short-lived British Psychedelic Pop / Rock band TomorrowFind albums by this artist, which comprised of vocalist Keith WestFind albums by this artist, guitarist Steve HoweFind albums by this artist, bassist John WoodsFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. JuniorFind albums by this artist) and drummer John AlderFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. TwinkFind albums by this artist). The album´s producer Mark WirtzFind albums by this artist played keyboards on the album. This expanded edition also features solo material by West, which was recorded with Howe, bassist Ronnie WoodFind albums by this artist and drummer Aynsley DunbarFind albums by this artist and tracks recorded by The Aquarian Age sidekick band which was Twink and Junior
Although quite charming and innovative at the time, in retrospect Tomorrow were not much different from hundreds of other Psychedelic bands that were popping up on the British scene in the late 1960s. The album was quickly deleted from the Parlophone catalog, only to be elevated to a "lost gem" status a few years later when Howe became the guitar hero for Yes and the hype hit the fan.
The band moved in the same circles as other early Psychedelic bands, like Soft MachineFind albums by this artist, John`s ChildrenFind albums by this artist, Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist and many others and their material sounds similar, but alas less impressive than the songs written by these bands. West was not a very impressive vocalist and an uneven songwriter (he authored almost all the songs appearing here). Howe played some nice guitar licks on this album and to be honest his playing did not improve much after this.
Overall this is a nice document of an era, accurately preserving the carefree atmosphere of the time and the spirit of searching and experimentation, which existed in Pop and Rock as much as in other music genres and of course other Arts. This is definitely worth checking out by Psychedelia lovers.
