CURVED AIR ~ AIR CUT
ESOTERIC 2617 (Barcode: 5013929471740) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1973 Released: 2018

This is a reissue of the fourth album by the British Progressive Rock group Curved AirFind albums by this artist, one of the most unique and ambitious representatives of the genre. The band was fronted by the charismatic and idiosyncratic female vocalist Sonja KristinaFind albums by this artist. Following the departure of the three founding members of the group: Darryl WayFind albums by this artist, Francis MonkmanFind albums by this artist and Florian Pilkington-MiksaFind albums by this artist, Kristina and bassist Mike WedgwoodFind albums by this artist carried the group´s name into the future, enlisting the violinist / keyboardist Eddie JobsonFind albums by this artist, guitarist Kirby GregoryFind albums by this artist and drummer Jim RussellFind albums by this artist to complete the new lineup, which recorded this album. It presents eight original songs, written by Gregory, Jobson, Wedgwood and also Kristina, who wrote the lyrics to two songs written by others. This remastered reissue offers improved sound quality but no bonus material.

The music offered a unique amalgamation of British Folk, Classical Music, Electronic Music, Rock and Jazz influences, unmatched by any of their contemporaries and despite the departure of the two songwriters responsible for the majority of the material present on the first three classic albums, the material this album offers is on a par with its predecessors. Sadly this lineup proved to be short lived and disbanded shortly after the album was released in the summer of 1973.

In 1974 Curved Air reunited and recorded one live album called simply "LiveFind albums with this title", which featured the original lineup except for the bassist and a year later Kristina and Way managed to put another lineup together and recorded two more albums: "Midnight WireFind albums with this title" (1975) and "AirborneFind albums with this title" (1976) before disbanding for many years to come.

Sonja Kristina remains to this very day one of the most distinctive Rock vocalists. She managed to maintain a steady, although less glamorous career over the years, producing a substantial volume of excellent music. She also fronts the reformed edition of Curved Air.

Overall this is one of the essential British Classic Rock / Prog albums, which lost absolutely nothing of its strength over time and still sounds fresh and moving today. This reissue is a splendid opportunity for the new generation of music listeners to discover this everlasting classic. Essential piece of music history!

JETHRO TULL ~ A (THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY A LA MODE EDITION)
CHRYSALIS 190295127497 (Barcode: 190295127497) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1980 Released: 2021

This is a 40th Anniversary Edition reissue of the thirteenth album by the British Prog Masters Jethro TullFind albums by this artist and another chapter in the series of reissues of their seminal albums which are being remixed to new stereo and 5.1 surround sound versions by Steven WilsonFind albums by this artist, who is doing similar projects with classic Rock / Prog albums by other artists as well. It follows a similar treatment that Wilson applied to the reissues of all early Jethro Tull releases.

The reissue consists of three CDs and three DVDs. The first CD contains the new stereo mix of the original album (ten tracks) and six “associated recordings", all of which are previously unreleased. The second and third CDs present the entire live recording at the LA Sports Arena in November 1980, also with new stereo remix, which was previously unreleased. The first DVD contains the album and five of the "associate recordings" remixed in two High-Resolution formats (5.1 DTS, AC3 Dolby Digital Surround Sound and in High Resolution stereo format 96/24 LPCM). Also included are the original stereo mixes of the album in High Resolution stereo format 96/24 LPCM. The second DVD includes the LA Sports Arena concert in High-Resolution formats. The third DVD includes the “SlipstreamFind albums with this title” video with audio tracks in High-Resolution formats. If you are confused by all these technical terms, don´t be – it is all complete bullshit piece of hype! Basically you don´t even get the original stereo mix of the album in a CD form, but you get almost two hours of a live concert on CD, remixed versions of the album, and a bunch of bonus tracks, which honestly contribute very little, if anything at all.

The entire set is lavishly packaged in a digibook format, with great photos of the band, background material, the song lyrics and other goodies, which are all beyond reproach.

The group´s lineup on this album presents a dramatic change over. Ian AndersonFind albums by this artist as usual handles most of the vocals and plays the flute parts and acoustic guitar / mandolin and the lead guitar is magnificently handled by Martin BarreFind albums by this artist, but the keyboardists are gone and rhythm section is new and features bassist Dave PeggFind albums by this artist and drummer Mark CraneyFind albums by this artist. Keyboardist / violinist Eddie JobsonFind albums by this artist is listed as a special guest.

Musically the album leaves behind the Folk-Rock direction and British Folkloristic references and moves more into Rock mainstream, but of course it still firmly and consistently continues the Progressive Rock elements, which the band masterly develops regardless of the current stylistic aesthetic the specific albums deal with.

With the end of the 1970s decade Progressive Rock was steadily losing its steam and the artistic / aesthetic end of the genre was imminent, and yet Jethro Tull were going ahead as if they were living on a different planet, which in retrospect might have just been right. They were still at their artistic peak, which continued for years, without any signs of getting worn-out. Perhaps they were, after all, a class of their own.

For many Jethro Tull fans this albums marks perhaps the last days of the group´s long and flourishing career, but personally I believe everything the group created over the years was top notch and it was the listeners following fads and fashions who could not always follow the intricacies and complexity of the music Anderson whimsically weaved. A classic by any standard!
Side Note
As for the Steven WilsonFind albums by this artist contributions, I´m perplexed time after time why anybody being of sound mind would allow him to butcher the original material and then hype the results as spectacular. These original mixes are untouchable and anybody trying to change them is more or less re-painting Van Gogh, re-sculpturing Michelangelo or re-writing the Bible, all truly barbaric acts of disrespect.

Additionally I find his stereo mixes to be dry, artificial and deviant, badly damaging the original ambience of the recordings. Perhaps for people who are not familiar with the original sound this sounds fine, but for me it´s unbearable and sacrilegious.

In addition I find the surround sound completely redundant, hoping for years that it will go away as did quad and other industry inventions meant to earn some more money from the suckers following the trends. The whole high resolution hype is so ridiculous; in reality most people are deaf anyway and can´t tell one note from another even if it bites them in the ass and use ridiculously lo-fi equipment. In short Emperor´s new clothes, as usual, and no shame whatsoever.

FRANK ZAPPA ~ ERIE
ZAPPA 20039 (Barcode: 602445394661) ~ USA ~ Avant-Garde Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1974 - 1976 Released: 2022

This is the 122nd album by iconic American guitarist / composer / bandleader / visionary Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist, released posthumously in 2022. The 6CD Box Set presents music recorded live in Erie, PA and surrounding area between 1974 and 1976 and offers over seven hours of previously unreleased (except for one track) performances of music, as usual almost entirely composed by Zappa. The recordings are presented chronologically and offer three complete concerts and bonus material from other performances.

The music was recorded by three lineups, which includes Zappa on guitar and vocals and the following musicians:

George DukeFind albums by this artist on keyboards, synthesizer and vocals, Tom FowlerFind albums by this artist on bass, Jeff SimmonsFind albums by this artist on guitar and vocals, Don PrestonFind albums by this artist on synthesizer, Bruce FowlerFind albums by this artist on trombone and vocals, Walt FowlerFind albums by this artist on trumpet, Napoleon Murphy BrockFind albums by this artist on saxophone, flute and lead vocals, Ralph HumphreyFind albums by this artist on drums and percussion and Chester ThompsonFind albums by this artist on drums and percussion, who play on CD1 and CD2 and the first two tracks of CD3.

George Duke on keyboards, synthesizer and vocals, Tom Fowler on bass, Ruth UnderwoodFind albums by this artist on percussion, Napoleon Murphy Brock on saxophone, flute and lead vocals and Chester Thompson on drums and percussion, who play on the rest of CD3 and CD4.

Bianca OdinFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. Lady BiancaFind albums by this artist, who played with Zappa for just one month, which makes this a rare appearance) on keyboards and vocals, Ray WhiteFind albums by this artist on guitar and vocals, Eddie JobsonFind albums by this artist and keyboards and violin, Patrick O`HearnFind albums by this artist on bass and vocals and Terry BozzioFind albums by this artist on drums and vocals, who play on CD5 and CD6.

It is truly amazing to discover the depth of the Zappa Family Trust vault and the fact that so much previously unreleased material is still available. Zappa’s Genius is revealed in every piece of recorded music he left behind, and the passing time makes us realize how pioneering and groundbreaking his work was at the time and in many respects continues to be so also today.

Overall, although this music is now almost fifty years old, it sounds as fresh as it did when first heard and lost absolutely nothing of its power and everlasting beauty. This album is a valuable addition to Zappa’s incredible recorded legacy and is an absolute must for his many followers, who are always delighted to hear some previously unreleased material.

FRANK ZAPPA ~ PHILLY `76
VAULTERNATIVE 20091 (Barcode: 824302009123) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1976 Released: 2009

This is an archival album of live recordings by iconic American guitarist / composer / bandleader / visionary Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist, recorded on October 29, 1976 at The Spectrum in Philadelphia. The 2CD album includes all the music played that night, lasting together for over two hours, all of which was previously unreleased. The album was released in 2009 as one of the series of complete live concerts, which also includes “FZ:OZFind albums with this title”, “BuffaloFind albums with this title”, “WazooFind albums with this title”, “Hammersmith OdeonFind albums with this title”, “Carnegie HallFind albums with this title” and “Chicago `78Find albums with this title”. All the music (except one song) was composed by Zappa.

The lineup of the musicians playing in the band, which is rarely documented, consists, in addition to Zappa on guitar and vocals of course, of vocalist / keyboardist Bianca OdinFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. Lady BiancaFind albums by this artist), vocalist / rhythm guitarist Ray WhiteFind albums by this artist, violinist / keyboardist Eddie JobsonFind albums by this artist, bassist Patrick O`HearnFind albums by this artist and drummer Terry BozzioFind albums by this artist. The repertoire covers past favorites and of course current (at the time) repertoire, including material from the “Zoot AlluresFind albums with this title” album, as well as some rarities previously unreleased or rarely performed.

The music, as I have already stated repeatedly, is beyond categorization, being first and foremost the idiosyncratic creation of Zappa’s musical Genius. Of course every new piece of reissued vault material by Zappa expands the portrait of one of the paramount musical Geniuses of the 20th Century. I still label it as Jazz-Rock Fusion, as it embraces the wide perspective of these two genres. After all it is no less than two hours of the best music money can buy, brilliantly recorded and carefully put together for you listening pleasure.

Overall, this a superb and highly detailed document of the way Zappa created his masterpieces, and of course a testimony to his musical out of the box thinking and creativity. As far as concert recordings, this is an extraordinary example of Zappa’s ability to run a tight ship, perhaps tighter than any other. Despite the complexity of the material, Swiss watchmakers are using this music to synchronize their watches by.

FRANK ZAPPA ~ SHUT UP `N PLAY YER GUITAR
ZAPPA 3863 (Barcode: 824302386323) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1977 - 1980 Released: 2012

This is a reissue / remaster of the 31st, 32nd and 33rd albums by iconic American guitarist / composer / bandleader / visionary Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist, originally released in 1981 as “Shut Up `N Play Yer GuitarFind albums with this title”, “Shut Up `N Play Yer Guitar Some MoreFind albums with this title” and “Return Of The Son Of Shut Up `N Play Yer GuitarFind albums with this title” and combined here into one release. The 2CD album presents twenty tracks, which are guitar solos taken from original compositions by Zappa, except one track which was co-composed with Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist. The music was mostly captured during live performances between 1977 and 1980, with some of the dates, places and lineups unknown.

The lineups that recorded the music include Zappa on guitar, guitarists Ike WillisFind albums by this artist, Denny WalleyFind albums by this artist, Warren CuccurulloFind albums by this artist, Steve VaiFind albums by this artist and Ray WhiteFind albums by this artist, keyboardists Tommy MarsFind albums by this artist, Peter WolfFind albums by this artist, Bob HarrisFind albums by this artist, Eddie JobsonFind albums by this artist and Andre LewisFind albums by this artist, percussionist Ed MannFind albums by this artist, bassists Arthur BarrowFind albums by this artist, Roy EstradaFind albums by this artist and Patrick O`HearnFind albums by this artist and drummers Vinnie ColaiutaFind albums by this artist and Terry BozzioFind albums by this artist.

The music is entirely instrumental and focuses on Zappa’s extraordinary guitar virtuosity, which gets here the full exposure. The tracks testify to his diversity and inventiveness as a guitarist, which often gets lost within the complexity of his music, especially so when it is performed by one of his big ensembles. Although cut off from their “natural” context, the soli form perfectly coherent kaleidoscope of styles, techniques and genres, as well as a collection of performances, which are all Zappa’s idiosynchratic spontaneous creations, totally unlike any other guitar work by any other musician on this planet.

Despite the fact that these are “only” guitar soli, the album is perfectly listenable and these selections are so intense and unadulterated that they require an absolute attention from the listener, who has to overcome the harmonic and rhythmic complexities in order to enjoy this music in full.

Overall, although over forty years passed since this music was recorded, this album remains an absolute Classic in every respect, which stands proudly as an icon of superb music, which still shines brighter than almost anything else recorded since. Zappa’s genius remains mostly a mystery and his guitar playing should be a bottomless source of inspiration to all musicians trying to play the guitar, even if they (hopefully) realize that there was only one Frank Zappa.
Side Note
Frank Zappa created a vast recorded legacy during his lifetime, which is continuously being expanded using music recorded and stored in his extensive vault. The albums officially released and approved by Zappa are numbered sequentially in the "Official Release" series, from #001 to the last release so far #126. The albums between #001 to #062 were released during Zappa's lifetime and all the others were released posthumously. There are countless unofficial / bootleg releases on the market as well.

Zappa's catalogue was remastered for CD release twice: in 1995 for the RykodiscFind albums on this label releases and again in 2012 for the ZappaFind albums on this label Records / UniversalFind albums on this label releases. The Zappa / Universal program includes 60 releases, which cover the entire catalog released during his lifetime (62 releases, except #013 "200 Motels" and the three Box Sets #043, #046 and #049 called "The Old Masters vol.I / II / III"), and 6 posthumous releases (#064, #065, #067, #068, #093 and #094), which were also included.

FRANK ZAPPA ~ ZAPPA IN NEW YORK
ZAPPA 3856 (Barcode: 824302385623) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1976 Released: 2012

This is a reissue / remaster of the 23rd album by iconic American guitarist / composer / bandleader / visionary Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist, recorded live during a series of concerts at the NYC Palladium in December 1976 and originally released as a 2LP album in 1978. A much expanded 5CD edition, including the original release and hours of bonus material, all previously unreleased, was released in 2019 as the 112th album, called “Zappa In New York (40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)Find albums with this title”. All the music was composed by Zappa.

The group / orchestra accompanying Zappa, who plays guitar and sings, includes an incredible assemblage of musicians: rhythm guitarist / vocalist Ray WhiteFind albums by this artist, keyboardist / violinist Eddie JobsonFind albums by this artist, bassist Patrick O`HearnFind albums by this artist, drummer Terry BozzioFind albums by this artist, percussionist Ruth UnderwoodFind albums by this artist, vibraphonist David SamuelsFind albums by this artist and a brilliant brass section comprising of saxophonists Lou MariniFind albums by this artist, Michael BreckerFind albums by this artist and Ronnie CuberFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist and trombonist Tom MaloneFind albums by this artist. The material includes some compositions, which appeared on earlier Zappa’s releases, but most of the material was completely new at the time.

The music, as I have already stated repeatedly, is beyond categorization, being first and foremost the idiosyncratic creation of Zappa’s musical Genius. Obviously at the time Zappa was emphasizing the Jazz elements in his music, as the Jazzy brass section certifies, creating his very own Jazz-Rock Fusion, but these terms are highly inappropriate to describe the full scope of this incredible music.

Every new piece of reissued vault material by Zappa expands the portrait of one of the paramount musical Geniuses of the 20th Century. As far as live albums are concerned, this gem certainly finds its place in the Pantheon of the finest live recordings of all time. Listening to these 5 CDs in a row is definitely a life changing Zappaorgy.

Overall, this is an absolute must have album for all Zappaoids, but in truth every true music lover should find this music outstanding in every possible and impossible way… beyond recommendation…
