VOLKER KRIEGEL ~ INSIDE: MISSING LINK
MPS 4029759178699 (Barcode: 4029759178699) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1972 Released: 2023

This is a reissue / remaster of the iconic double album by the German guitarist / composer / bandleader Volker KriegelFind albums by this artist, which was his third album as a leader and the second release on the MPSFind albums on this label label. Although recorded during the same session, the material was split into two parts, each on one LP (and now CD).

CD1 was recorded by an octet and features a brass section. It includes three prominent British Jazz musicians: saxophonist Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist, pianist John TaylorFind albums by this artist and drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist. The other players are German Jazz musicians: trombonist Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Heinz SauerFind albums by this artist and bassist Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist. Dutch percussionist Cees SeeFind albums by this artist completes the lineup. The CD presents four tracks, three of which are original compositions by Kriegel and one is an arrangement of a tune by Brazilian composer Edu LoboFind albums by this artist. Three of the tracks last for over ten minutes and the music is strongly Jazz oriented, including some Free Jazz accents.

CD2 was recorded by a quintet, without the brass and including Taylor, Weber, See and German drummer Peter BaumeisterFind albums by this artist. This CD presents eight tracks, six of which are original compositions by Kriegel, one is by Weber and one by Brazilian composer Caetano VelosoFind albums by this artist. The music is more Fusion oriented and the tracks are much shorter, with only one crossing the ten minutes in duration.

In retrospect this is definitely one of the fines examples of European Jazz-Rock Fusion, with a stellar lineup and absolutely brilliant musicianship and compositions. Kriegel was sadly underappreciated at the time, but his complete discography, including several excellent posthumous releases, definitely points out that he was a pivotal figure in European Jazz and Fusion.

Overall, this an absolute must have for every Fusion connoisseur, and one of the most important albums of the genre. Combining the best players from the leading European Fusion scenes at the time: Germany and UK, the music spark with inventiveness, virtuosity and innovation, completely absent from the current Fusion scene. This long awaited reissue fills a major gap in the European Fusion discography and the recorded legacy of Volker Kriegel.

The legendary German MPSFind albums on this label (Musik Produktion Schwarzwald) label, founded by Hans Georg Brunner-SchwerFind albums by this artist (HGBS) in 1963, first as SABAFind albums on this label Records and later on from 1968 as MPS Records, was the most important independent European record label, which had an enormous contribution to the development of European Jazz. For many years MPS cooperated with the legendary German producer / author Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, my Friend and Mentor, whose visionary approach and open-mindedness brought the crème de la crème of the Jazz (in the broadest meaning of the word) musicians from all over the world to the label. Between 1963 and 1983 MPS produced about five hundred albums, many of which are among the most important Jazz recordings on this planet.

In 1983 the MPS catalog was sold to UniversalFind albums on this label, which sadly resulted in all those artistic treasures to almost disappear from the face of the earth – a situation not only tragic but culturally criminal. Universal reissued a part of the MPS albums (probably 128 titles) on CD between 1999 and 2011 under the "Most Perfect Sound Edition" moniker.

Since 2008 the German Promising MusicFind albums on this label label released some of the MPS recordings, but at a very slow pace.

In 2014 the German company Edel AG bought the MPS catalogue from Universal and released a series of 25 MPS albums on CD with a new slipcase graphic design, which brought all those excellent albums back to life. In 2015 Edel AG started to record and release new albums under the MPS moniker. In 2016 Edel AG released a series of 10 classic MPS albums on CD, which were beautifully remastered and re-packaged, presenting the original artwork and liner notes, as well as new liner notes and photographs. An obvious labor of love, these reissues are what the MPS catalogue truly deserves. This project was continued in 2017 with another series of 10 classic MPS albums released on CD. In later years some new reissues were released sporadically.

Over the years many SABA / MPS albums were reissued in Japan, which is often the only available source for these albums today, but that is a story in itself.

ALBERT MANGELSDORFF ~ FOLK MOND & FLOWER DREAM
TROPICAL MUSIC 68.861 (Barcode: 764916886126) ~ GERMANY ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

Recorded: 1967 Released: 2007

This is a reissue / remaster of an obscure and criminally neglected album by German trombonist / composer / bandleader Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist, recorded with his quintet, which also included saxophonists Heinz SauerFind albums by this artist and Gunter KronbergFind albums by this artist, bassist Gunter LenzFind albums by this artist and drummer Ralf HubnerFind albums by this artist. The album presents six tracks, five of which are original compositions by Mangelsdorff and one by Sauer.

The music is insanely brilliant and presents Mangelsdorff and his cohorts at the crucial days of the birth of modern European Jazz, which explodes with originality and intense search of new forms of expression, with Free Jazz / Improvised Music tendencies. Mangelsdorff’s virtuosity as a trombone player was already fully developed by the time this music was recorded, as well as his compositional skills, and the music on this album simply explodes with originality and inventiveness. Nevertheless, he was always a marvelous weaver of brilliant melodic themes, which are the base of the improvisations by the quintet. It goes without saying that the rest of the quintet members were all superbly talented.

Overall, this is an absolute gem of early modern European Jazz and a quintessential eye (well, ear) opener as far as the birth of the European Jazz is concerned and the quantum jump it made in reference to the American Jazz tradition. It took me a while to get hold of a copy of if this album, since even after it was reissued, it got very little exposure. Absolutely essential!

ALBERT MANGELSDORFF QUARTET ~ NEVER LET IT END
MPS 602517060029 (Barcode: 602517060029) ~ GERMANY ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2008

This is a reissue / remaster of an album by German trombonist / composer / bandleader Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist, recorded with his all German quartet, which includes some of the finest European Jazz musicians active at the time: saxophonist Heinz SauerFind albums by this artist, bassist Gunter LenzFind albums by this artist and drummer Ralf HubnerFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven tracks, four composed by Mangelsdorff, two by Sauer and one by Hubner. The album was produced by my Friend and Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist and his original liner notes (albeit only in German) are included on the album’s artwork.

Mangelsdorff, and his brother Emil MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist, were the pillars of the modern German Jazz scene, which developed rapidly after WWII, both in West and East Germany, peaking in the late 1960s. Germany developed in time as an epicenter of the continental Jazz scene, with huge number of excellent musicians, brilliant club and festival scene and the strongest music recording industry, with legendary labels like MPSFind albums on this label, ECMFind albums on this label, EnjaFind albums on this label and many others, which produced the finest modern Jazz recordings in the world, leaving the US scene far beyond from that time on.

Albert Mangelsdorff was one of the most vital figures on that scene and his ever changing groups pushed the Jazz limits at all times. His absolutely unique virtuosity on the trombone changed the role of that instrument to an equally important position in the Jazz ensemble as trumpet and saxophone. I was lucky to meet him and see / hear him play and record on numerous occasions and he always left an enormous impression as a person and a musician.

His recorded legacy, which he managed to amass very prolifically, is one of the most important individual European Jazz legacies, which this album proudly represents. The music here presents a perfect amalgam of the Jazz tradition and the rapid development towards modern and Free Jazz.

Overall, this is one of the most interesting Jazz albums in European Jazz, despite the fact that it is only known by relatively very few Jazz listeners. I have owned a copy since day one and listened to this album countless times in the almost fifty years since it was released, and each and every time I managed to discover something new in the music. I can only hope some more listeners will discover it one day, although admittedly it is quite difficult to find a copy.

ALBERT MANGELSDORFF QUINTET ~ BIRDS OF UNDERGROUND
MPS 602517175945 (Barcode: 602517175945) ~ GERMANY ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

Recorded: 1972 Released: 2008

This is a reissue / remaster of an album by German trombonist / composer / bandleader Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist, recorded with his all German quintet with saxophonists Heinz SauerFind albums by this artist and Gerd DudekFind albums by this artist (who also plays flute), bassist Buschi NiebergallFind albums by this artist and drummer Peter GigerFind albums by this artist. The album presents four lengthy tracks, three of which last for over ten minutes, two composed by Mangelsdorff and two co-composed by all five musicians.

The music presents some of the finest German / European Free Jazz / Improvised Music, which by the time this music was recorded, was in full bloom, expanding the American Free Jazz of the earlier decade into a coherent, fully developed and aesthetically solidified artistic expression. Despite the total Freedom, enjoyed by the musicians, the music is perfectly structured and logically developed, sometimes based on a briefly stated theme, and at other times springing into the open as if from nowhere.

All five musicians are true masters of their respective instruments, which results in breathtaking performances by them all. Most of the music is in a form of group improvisations, rather than soloing accompanied by the rest of the quintet, which results in a situation when all five musicians are soloing at the same time, which of course might be more difficult to follow, but is extremely potent musically.

Mangelsdorff’s performances on this album are absolutely awe striking and his early 1970s output remains his most productive and revolutionary period, including his first solo trombone recording “TrombirdsFind albums with this title”, recorded and released shortly before this album, which remains one of the most iconic trombone albums in all time.

Overall, this is an absolute gem of an album which aged beautifully with time and remains as one of the finest European Free Jazz recording in all time. Very few, if any, more impressive Free Jazz albums were recorded since, and it remains a brilliant reminder of Mangelsdorff’s genius and his pivotal role in European Jazz, as well as the greatest trombone virtuoso ever. Beyond essential!

EMIL MANGELSDORFF & ALBERT MANGELSDORFF ~ EARLY DISCOVERIES
SWR JAZZHAUS 459 (Barcode: 730099045957) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1953 - 1963 Released: 2018

This is a wonderful archive album by Godfathers of German Jazz, brothers Emil MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist (saxophone) and Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist (trombone). The 2CD album presents live ad studio recordings from the vaults of the German SWR broadcasting corporation, captured between 1953 and 1963 and produced by my Friend and Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist. The various combos include the who’s who of the pioneering German Jazz musicians of the post WWII era, such as saxophonists Joki FreundFind albums by this artist, Hans KollerFind albums by this artist (Austrian resident in Germany) and Heinz SauerFind albums by this artist, clarinetist Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, bassist Peter TrunkFind albums by this artist, drummer Joe NayFind albums by this artist and many others.

The first CD presets twelve tracks recorded by the Albert Mangelsdorff quintet from 1961, which plays four original compositions by Albert Mangelsdorff and eight standards. The music offers the glimpse of how European Jazz musicians interpreted the American Jazz tradition, mostly Bebop influenced, nearing the inevitable departure towards the more advanced modern European Jazz.

The second CD presents three tracks by the German All Stars twelve-piece band (with Mangelsdorff brothers as members), all composed by Freund, and one track by the Albert Mangelsdorff / Peter Trunk duo composed by Albert Mangelsdorff, all recorded in 1963. Next come four tracks by the Joki Freund sextet (with Mangelsdorff brothers as members) playing four original compositions by Freund, recorded in 1957. This is followed by a track by the 1956 version of the German All Stars band, followed by another duo track by Albert Mangelsdorff and Hungarian (resident in Germany) guitarist Attila ZollerFind albums by this artist, recorded in 1953. The last three tracks offer a super-rare appearance by the Austrian pianist Joe ZawinulFind albums by this artist recorded in 1957, before his departure to the US and world fame.

All the music is excellently recorded and offers a superb glimpse at the German Jazz scene at the late 1950s / early 1960s, when the European Jazz scene was making its formative first steps towards the independence from the American tradition, after mastering its trademarks. There is a plethora of wonderful solos and ensemble performances present, as well as examples of Albert Mangelsdorff’s love of the duo format, which dominated his entire career.

Overall this is a brilliant document of the era and a must to all European Jazz fans, interested in the history and the process of its development. Wholeheartedly recommended!

HEINZ SAUER ~ IF (BLUE) THEN (BLUE)
ACT 4111 (Barcode: 614427411129) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2009 Released: 2012

This is a re-edition of a wonderfully intimate album by the veteran (born 1932) German saxophonist / composer Heinz SauerFind albums by this artist, which consists of a series of duo pieces with two brilliant German pianists: Michael WollnyFind albums by this artist (born 1978) and Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist (born 1944), separated by time as members of two distinct generations, but united by their musical creativity. Each of the pianists performs eight duos with Sauer, which are partly spontaneously improvised and partly based on standards, most of those by Miles DavisFind albums by this artist. Sauer recorded several duo albums with Wollny, but this is first encounter with Kuhn in a duo setting.

The music moves between freely improvised pieces and improvisations based on familiar melodic themes, but the overall atmosphere is full of fragile melancholy and introvert meditation. Sauer´s unique sound and blowing technique creates a magic atmosphere, which is supported by the piano as a frame of reference. At times it seems that the saxophone and the piano are both improvising on separate planes and than these planes intersect and collide creating a new multidimensional universe of sounds.

This music is a superb manifestation of European Jazz at its most elusive and mystic manifestation, where the musicians play minimalistic phrases separated by moments of silence and weaving a tapestry of complex, subtle pieces, which sound like soundtracks of imaginary movies. It is as aesthetically aloof from the Jazz tradition as humanly possible, and yet it is entirely Jazz based, simply existing on a celestial rather than earthly plane.

Overall this is surely one of the most fascinating examples of the "Art of the Duo" Jazz recordings, which deserves an honorary place in every respectable music collection. This kind of music can be listened to repetitively, with a good chance of discovering previously hidden treasures with each consecutive visit. Obviously I recommend it wholeheartedly to all serious Jazz connoisseurs and followers of the European Jazz scene. A true Gem!

HEINZ SAUER / JASPER VAN`T HOF ~ HAMBURG EPISODE
ART OF GROOVE 80332 (Barcode: 885513803320) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1983 Released: 2015

This is a fabulous archival live recording of a duo concert by two of the most prominent European Jazz musicians: German saxophonist Heinz SauerFind albums by this artist and Dutch keyboardist Jasper van`t HofFind albums by this artist. Together they perform six original compositions, each of them contributing three of his works. The entire concert was beautifully recorded by the NDR, with the legendary Michael NauraFind albums by this artist at the helm. In spite of the fact that the music was recorded thirty two years before it was released, it lost absolutely nothing if its vitality and relevance over time and is an extraordinary example of the "Art of the Duo".

Among the countless number of saxophone players around the world, Sauer has surely one of the most distinctive voices on his tenor saxophone, immediately recognizable and using a completely unique playing technique, which allows his to play the melody line and the complex improvisations around it, sounding like one inseparable sound. Often describes as Free without being totally Free, his playing has always been one of the most advanced Avant-Garde and yet completely romantic and likeable. This fantastic dichotomy marks Sauer as one of the European Jazz everlasting icons.

Of course van`t Hof is also a great Master, playing every possible keyboard instrument from a grand acoustic piano to the most advanced electronic instruments, always doing so with the utmost sensibility, inventiveness and elegance. His numerous recordings over the years are a brilliant record of great musicianship and immense contribution to European Jazz. His performances on this album are of course as perfect as can be imagined, balancing Sauer´s sonic vistas with his own inventions, as if all this music was written down in great detail, where in fact it was completely improvised.

This album is not only a document of great individual performances, but more importantly is shoes a level of interplay and communication achieved by the great Masters of the Jazz idiom. These veterans speak one language at all times, regardless of what instruments they play. Such telepathic coordination and artistic symbiosis happens only now and then, and this encounter was simply one of those magic moments.

Kudos to the Art Of GrooveFind albums on this label Label for releasing this wonderful music, as it certainly deserves to be heard. This album should be a pride possession of every serious European Jazz collector, so please try to get it ASAP and you won´t regret it.

VARIOUS ARTISTS ~ POLISH RADIO JAZZ ARCHIVES VOL.27
POLSKIE RADIO 2059 (Barcode: 5907812247126) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1965 Released: 2016

This is the twenty-seventh installment in the series of releases initiated by the Polish Radio, which presents archive Jazz recordings from the radio vaults. Radio recordings are always a fabulous source of remarkable material, and as far as Polish Jazz history is concerned, the Polish Radio, which was a state monopoly for 45 years, recorded over time a plethora of invaluable material, which apart from the albums released by the Polskie Nagrania record company (also a state monopoly), is the only available additional source of Polish Jazz recordings. For many years Polish Radio recorded concerts presented during Poland´s most important Jazz venues, including the annual Jazz Jamboree Festival and many other festivals as well.

The tracks presented here were recorded live in December 1965 during the eighth Jazz Jamboree Festival in Warsaw and are the second volume of a collection of tracks from that event.

The first two tracks present a trio led by one of the Godfathers of modern European Jazz, the German pianist / composer Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist with bassist Klaus KochFind albums by this artist and drummer Reinhard SchwartzFind albums by this artist. They perform two original compositions by Kuhn and the performance is one of the earliest examples of European Free Jazz. Kuhn´s performance here is absolutely stunning as everything he played at the time, before he moved from East German to West Germany. The fact that his Free Jazz playing was tolerated by the GDR regime is a fascinating story by itself. More details about his activity around the time this music was recorded ban be found in the review of the Zbigniew NamyslowskiFind albums by this artist´s album "Live At Kosmos, BerlinFind albums with this title", which was recorded just a month earlier.

The next four tracks present a quintet led by another Godfather of modern European Jazz, the German trombonist / composer Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist with saxophonists Gunter KronbergFind albums by this artist and Heinz SauerFind albums by this artist, bassist Gunter LentzFind albums by this artist and drummer Ralf HubnerFind albums by this artist. They perform three original compositions by Mangelsdorff and one composition by the British trumpeter / composer Ian CarrFind albums by this artist, a great pioneer of modern British Jazz. Although the music performed by the Albert Mangelsdorff quintet is not as Free Jazz oriented as that by Joachim Kuhn, it is a superb of early modern European Jazz, which was already emancipated from the American Jazz influence and clearly showed the new direction being created in Europe. Both these performances show the importance of German musicians as co-creators of early European Jazz.

The last track present a sextet led by yet another Godfather of modern European Jazz, the Polish Jazz pianist / composer Andrzej TrzaskowskiFind albums by this artist with American trumpeter Ted CursonFind albums by this artist (who was living in Europe at the time), saxophonists Janusz MuniakFind albums by this artist and Wlodzimierz NahornyFind albums by this artist, bassist Jacek OstaszewskiFind albums by this artist and drummer Adam JedrzejowskiFind albums by this artist. They perform one extended original composition by Trzaskowski. The music is again a stunning example of early modern European Jazz and a great precursor of the explosion of the Polish Jazz scene, which was happening at the time.

The beautifully restored sound quality is excellent and the warm ambience of the analog recording is a true joy. As usual with this series, which is very reasonably priced, I miss the presence of "in depth" liner notes / booklet, which should convey the circumstances at which this music was recorded and its importance to the development of Jazz in Poland. Nevertheless this is an absolutely essential piece of Jazz history which every Jazz fan will surely consider an absolute must.
