  | AMAZING BLONDEL ~ ENGLAND / BLONDEL BGO 0914 (Barcode: 5017261209146) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1972 - 1973 Released: 2010
4th and 5th albums by British band Amazing BlondelFind albums by this artist, which were quite an unusual "bird" among the flourishing UK Folk-Rock flock in the late 1960s / early 1970s. Although many British bands often relied on traditional folk material and even went back several centuries in search for inspiration (PentangleFind albums by this artist, Fairport ConventionFind albums by this artist, GryphonFind albums by this artist and even Jethro TullFind albums by this artist), none of them dedicated their entire musical scope to English Early Music, Elizabethan song and minstrelsy, which is exactly what Amazing Blondel did. Formed by Terry WincottFind albums by this artist and John GladwinFind albums by this artist, the band was soon after expanded to a trio with the addition of Eddie BairdFind albums by this artist. The duo managed to record the debut album "The Amazing Blondel And A Few FacesFind albums with this title" for the obscure BellFind albums on this label label and after expanding to a trio they joined the roster of IslandFind albums on this label Records, recording a series of albums for that label, of which the two albums included here were the last. The very fact that a major record label would sign such an unusual fact is a reflection of the times and the character of the legendary Island owner Chris BlackwellFind albums by this artist, who collected on his label a staggering crew of music makers, promoting music on the basis of its merit rather than on its commercial potential – happy and sadly long time gone reality. These two albums are some of the most memorable and unusual musical documents of that era of Artistic freedom. "EnglandFind albums with this title" features music, almost entirely written by Gladwin, who also sings the lead vocals, is completely acoustic and played on instruments, which were used centuries ago and based entirely on the English Early Music format. The lyrics are also kept in the general spirit of the era, spiced with humorous tongue in cheek tidbits. "BlondelFind albums with this title", recorded following Gladwin´s departure from the group, is slightly more Rocky and features Steve WinwoodFind albums by this artist on bass guitar and Simon KirkeFind albums by this artist (FreeFind albums by this artist) on drums as well as many other guest artists including Paul RodgersFind albums by this artist, who sings on one track. In retrospect these two albums remain an ageless masterpiece, unrivaled to this very day and I can hardly imagine any Folk-Rock enthusiast´s record collection, which does not include them. For people who never came across this band before, this reissue is a splendid opportunity to fill a gap, which is unforgettable. Grab it!

  | JOONAS HAAVISTO / KESTUTIS VAIGINIS ~ MOON BRIDGE EIGHT ISLANDS 8008 (Barcode: 4988044095830) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2022 Released: 2024
This is an album by a duo comprising of Finnish Jazz pianist / composer Joonas HaavistoFind albums by this artist and Lithuanian Jazz saxophonist / composer Kestutis VaiginisFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight tracks, six are original compositions by the duo members (three each) and two are standards.
The music is beautifully melodic, classic mainstream Jazz, based on the wonderful performing skills and conversational proximity of the musicians. The minimalist setting allows for each musician to show both his improvisation skills and the ability to hold a tune, and of course their mutual telepathic interplay.
The original compositions are wonderfully coherent and melodically touching, avoiding triviality and artificial beatification and displaying heartfelt musical aesthetics. The result is a superb example of the “Art of the Duo” format, which offers a most rewarding listening experience.
In these difficult times, where noise and cacophony seem to be ruling the music world, such delicate, sophisticated, relaxed music is a true honey to the ears. Despite its outward “simplicity”, the music is truly penetrating and engaging, both on the compositional and performance levels.
Overall, this is a wonderful example of the Jazz duo format, a wonderful collection of excellent tunes and delicate, but deeply touching Jazz performances, which can win over every Jazz lover on this planet without a hitch. The superb sound quality of the recording adds to the overall joy of listening to this music. Brilliant stuff!

  | STOMU YAMASH`TA ~ THE MAN FROM THE EAST ESOTERIC 2082 (Barcode: 5013929718227) ~ JAPAN ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1972 Released: 2008

  | JOHN SURMAN ~ MORNING GLORY FMR 013 (Barcode: 649849982179) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1973 Released: 1995
In complete contrast to the first stage of British saxophonist John SurmanFind albums by this artist’s career, which lasted for about four years (between 1968 and 1971) and was characterized by almost obsessive recording and touring, he decided to “hold his horses” from that point on and record a limited number of albums each year – a modus operandi he adheres to consistently to this very day. 1972 saw the release of just one Surman album, the revolutionary Westering HomeFind albums with this title - a complete solo project. Similarly, 1973 brought us just one Surman album entitled “Morning Glory”, which was also the (collective) name of the group that recorded the album. Consisting of the top players on the British scene it included Surman on soprano saxophone and bass clarinet (note the fact that he does not play here his primary instrument – the baritone saxophone) with Malcolm GriffithsFind albums by this artist on trombone, Norwegian guitarist Terje RypdalFind albums by this artist, John TaylorFind albums by this artist on acoustic and electric piano, Chris LaurenceFind albums by this artist on bass and John MarshallFind albums by this artist on drums. Musically the album is quite surprising, as it marks Surman’s first venture into the field of Jazz-Rock Fusion (under his flag that is). Although the structure of the music is still very free form and the solos tend to float into free improvisational spheres, the guitar, electric piano and the rhythmic patterns are close to Fusion (which was at the peak of its development at the time). One might call this Free-Fusion, but of course labeling this magnificent music is completely senseless. Surman’s solos are, as usual, brilliant but all the musicians contribute more that a fair share to the album’s overall mastery. Originally released on IslandFind albums on this label, the album was unavailable for many years and having it back in circulation is a marvel. Of course it is an absolute must have for every follower of the British Saxophone Colossus and fan of modern British Jazz. Highly recommended!

  | JOHN SURMAN ~ WESTERING HOME FMR 016 ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1972 Released: 1995
British saxophone Colossus John SurmanFind albums by this artist was one of the busiest European Jazz musicians in the late 1960s. Between the time he recorded his eponymous debut album as a leader in 1968 and this 1972 recording Surman took part in no less than 45 recording sessions, both as a leader and sideman, recorded in UK, Germany and France. His position at the vortex of the burgeoning European modern Jazz and Improvised Music scene was a catalyst expanding the musical horizons and contributing to the scene’s rapid development by creating new musical discoveries. Surman’s musical fingerprints were all over the music, regardless if his input was just a guest solo appearance or a leading position. His legendary group called simply The TrioFind albums by this artist (with bassist Barre PhillipsFind albums by this artist and drummer Stu MartinFind albums by this artist), active between 1969 and 1971, was one of Europe’s most visionary ensembles and its recording legacy stands out as a beacon of European Jazz to this very day. Following this frantic activity Surman decided to take a radical side step and re-evaluate his output and musical approach. The result was this magnificent album, recorded completely solo by Surman by multi-tracking (overdubbing) the instruments (various saxophones, keyboards and percussion instruments) – an extremely bold and innovative approach to recording at that time (Surman will use this same approach in the future). These “conversations with himself” are all deeply personal statements; soul-searching, revealing and contemplative, all exquisitely executed. Baritone and soprano saxophone duels, long solos, shifting rhythms and moods – all the ingredients of great music are here for the listener to absorb and delight in. Surman proves again not only his brilliant technique as a player and composer, but must importantly being an innovator and pioneer of groundbreaking ideas. The album remains to this very day as a milestone of modern European Jazz and one of the great achievements of Surman’s illustrious career. The album was originally released on the HelpFind albums on this label label – a short-lived subsidiary of IslandFind albums on this label dedicated to “bizarre” stuff - and unavailable for many years. Great to have it back in circulation. Wholeheartedly recommended.

  | CAT STEVENS ~ TEA FOR THE TILLERMAN (DELUXE EDITION) ISLAND 5178708 (Barcode: 602517870888) ~ UK ~ Classic Pop Recorded: 1970 Released: 2008
4th album by singer / songwriter Cat StevensFind albums by this artist and one of the grand 1970s classic releases, which remains up to this day as an icon of supreme songwriting. Stevens was a most prolific writer at the time and wrote many songs for other singers as well as for his own albums. Recently recovered form tuberculosis, he changed his approach to writing lyrics, which became much more personal and introvert, as well as touching upon themes of social awareness (he was amongst the first songwriters to talk about environmental issues). But his main strength was of course his incredible talent to carve those unforgettable melodies, seemingly simplistic, but exquisitely crafted and touching. This album is full of such great songs, several of which turned into evergreens. Almost 40 years after these songs were written they lost nothing of their beauty, relevance and potency. Same can be said also about his next album "Teaser And The FirecatFind albums with this title", which is also an absolute classic. This Deluxe Edition adds a whole CD of bonus material, with early demos and live performances of the songs included on the album recorded over the years, some as recent as 2006. This is a gem any way you look at it and an essential item in any decent record collection!

  | FREE ~ FIRE AND WATER (DELUXE EDITION) ISLAND 5306090 (Barcode: 600753060902) ~ UK ~ Blues-Rock Recorded: 1970 Released: 2008
By the time FreeFind albums by this artist were recording their 3rd album the combined talents of singer Paul RodgersFind albums by this artist, guitarist Paul KossoffFind albums by this artist, bassist Andy FraserFind albums by this artist and drummer Simon KirkeFind albums by this artist, aided by the experience of grueling touring and fast-rising popularity with the crowds inspired the group to take the crucial decision to produce the new album by themselves. In retrospect this was probably the factor which turned Free from just another white Blues band into Blues-Rock Superstars. Fraser & Rodgers, who were in charge of writing the bulk of the band’s material, took their writing just a tiny notch away from the Blues roots towards Rock, apparently just the right step which made their popularity explode overnight. With the “All Right Now” single charting (soon to achieve a permanent seat on Rock’s Pantheon of evergreens) and constant demand for live gigs, the band was riding the wave of success, which in a very short time will lead to their ultimate destruction (as it did to almost every other band eventually). But right at that time they definitely were at their peak, producing a classic album, which will be never rivaled by any other group in that genre. The secret of this album’s greatness lies with the simplicity and “less is more” approach. Having written some great melodies the band did nothing to muddle the raw material and executed it perfectly, using some great riffs. Fraser’s bass lines are pure genius, pointing the music in the right direction, Kirke’s guitar licks create just the perfect fillers, avoiding lengthy solos which did not fit the bill here and Rodgers’ soulful vocals and his unparalleled understanding of the Blues place him immediately on the top of his class. This Deluxe Edition is a tribute to this outstanding album. Out of the 30 tracks (on 2 CDs) only the first 7 come from the original album, the rest being a plethora of studio, radio and live recordings, some previously unreleased. There is a lot of repetition here with 8 versions of “All Right Now” and 7 versions of “Fire And Water”, but they are all quite different and shed a lot of light on the band’s creative process. This album, combined with the ForeverFind albums with this title DVD, which spans the same time period, is a great document of the era, when music was the epicenter of Western Culture, lamentably long time gone. Essential to all Free fans of all ages, even if they already own the original album.

  | TRAFFIC ~ JOHN BARLEYCORN MUST DIE (DELUXE EDITION) ISLAND 533241 (Barcode: 0600753324110) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1970 Released: 2011
What started as a solo project by singer / keyboardist / guitarist / composer Steve WinwoodFind albums by this artist, following the demise of the short-lived supergroup Blind FaithFind albums by this artist, eventually led to the reunion of the legendary TrafficFind albums by this artist, when saxophonist / flautist Chris WoodFind albums by this artist and drummer Jim CapaldiFind albums by this artist joined Winwood in the studio to record this masterpiece, which was the 4th Traffic album. Stronger and more consistent than the previous recordings made by the group, which were experimental and daring but lacked stylistic unity, this album was relaxed and perfectly executed, with a beautiful and well balanced mixture of styles and influences, from British Folk to Progressive Rock. Four decades later this music still sounds divine and absolutely stunning and with the newly remastered sound is a true gem and an absolute classic. This new edition also adds a whole CD of previously unreleased material, which includes alternate mixes and a live Traffic performance captured at The Fillmore East. Essential stuff!

  | FREE ~ LIVE! (EXPANDED EDITION) ISLAND 586228 (Barcode: 731458622826) ~ UK ~ Blues-Rock Recorded: 1970 - 1971 Released: 2002
5th album by FreeFind albums by this artist, Britain’s best ever Blues-Rock band, and their first live release. The united powers of vocalist Paul RodgersFind albums by this artist, guitarist Paul KossoffFind albums by this artist, bassist Andy FraserFind albums by this artist and drummer Simon KirkeFind albums by this artist created an unprecedented and explosive power, which was never to be matched by any of their contemporaries. Free’s rapid rise to stardom eventually brought the group down to its knees, with internal frictions, drug abuse and grueling touring combined. By the time these live recordings were made in 1970, Free were at the very last days of their first stretch and at the end of the tour the group just felt apart. IslandFind albums on this label Records rushed the release of the live material, riding on the publicity created by the group’s split. Although they would re-group a year later and record one more album together, these recordings are truly the group at their peak and their end all at once. In retrospect it might be all for the best, as Free were always best live, as many “posthumous” recording would prove. Their simplicity was their real power and it worked best on stage. This album is a phenomenal document as to what Blues-Rock is all about. Rodgers, with his completely unique husky voice and expressionist genius has no equals (not then and not since), carrying the tunes as if there’s no tomorrow, aiming straight at the listeners heart. Kossoff’s elegant and reserved guitar style ranks amongst the best Blues guitar work there is, and although he avoids flashy long solos, everything he states in just a few bars is just right on the money. Fraser’s bass lines keep the group together and drive the music steadily, providing as if by the way, some of the most remarkable bass riffs ever. Kirke’s drumming is always right on, again avoiding flashy solos but tasteful and extremely musical. Together they just soar and mesmerize, even when the music is not more complex than basic twelve-bar blues. The expanded edition doubles the original duration with previously unreleased live material from the same gigs and one studio alternate take of the studio track that closes the original album. This is definitely an essential document of the group’s heritage, but of the entire era when music was honest, extraordinary and heartbreaking. A must!

Her life and career was abruptly cut short by her tragic and untimely death at the age of 31.
This album was separated by almost three years from its predecessor, which saw Denny rejoining Fairport Convention and recording her fifth album with the group called "Rising For The MoonFind albums with this title" (the group´s tenth album). She also carefully prepared the songs for this album, which are again a change of direction, this time more towards Pop / Rock, emphasized by the inclusion of one of Elton JohnFind albums by this artist´s songs as one of the three non-original songs on this album. As usual she is accompanied by fabulous musicians including many British Folk-Rock heroes, like guitarist Richard ThompsonFind albums by this artist, keyboardist John BundrickFind albums by this artist, bassist Dave PeggFind albums by this artist, drummer Dave MattacksFind albums by this artist and others. Guest star appearances by Steve WinwoodFind albums by this artist and Acker BilkFind albums by this artist are also present. Denny´s angelic voice and her unique vocal style are simply stellar. Several of the songs feature beautiful orchestral arrangements, which were criticized at the time for being a bit overshadowing Denny´s performances, but the certainly don´t make that impression in retrospect and are just right for the occasion.
This new 2CD edition adds a plethora of bonus material, which includes outtakes, demos, alternate versions and previously unreleased live material, which is all worth its weight in gold. It’s a proper tribute to Denny´s remarkable talents and wonderful output she left us to enjoy forever. It is an absolute must to every Folk-Rock fan anywhere on this planet!

This album is quite different from Denny´s previous work, less Folk-Rock oriented and with some gentle Jazz touches, an influence she absorbed from her father. Most of the material is original, but a few Jazz standards are also included. The overall atmosphere of the album is deeply melancholic and very introvert, nostalgic and somewhat dark, beautifully performed by her and a superb band, which includes many British Folk-Rock heroes, like guitarists Richard ThompsonFind albums by this artist and her husband Trevor LucasFind albums by this artist, keyboardist John BundrickFind albums by this artist, drummer Dave MattacksFind albums by this artist and others. | QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS ~ COSMOS ROCKS (DELUXE EDITION) ISLAND 602537014149 (Barcode: 602537014149) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 2008 Released: 2008
I must admit it took me a while to even consider listening to this album… I mean, separately, QueenFind albums by this artist was always one of my favorite British Rock bands and of course I have always considered Paul RodgersFind albums by this artist as the best British Blues-Rock vocalist ever, but somehow the combination of these two Rock legends seemed too bizarre to be true. Boy was I wrong…
Of course the real Queen ceased to exist when the bigger than life Freddie MercuryFind albums by this artist left us for greener pastures. But the remaining three band members: guitarist Brian MayFind albums by this artist, bassist John DeaconFind albums by this artist and drummer Roger TaylorFind albums by this artist decided to carry on for a while and released a couple of albums following Mercury´s death. After a decade of silence May and Taylor decided to revive the Queen moniker in order to tour. With Deacon opting to stay out, they enlisted Rodgers as the new lead singer and recorded a live album during the 2005 tour, which was followed three years later by this, their only studio album together. After two more live albums they decided to call it the day for good (so far).
Now Rodgers with his deep, throaty, Bluesy voice was nothing alike the operatic falsetto of Mercury, which meant only one thing, Queen had to change the repertoire to suit Rodgers´ abilities. The early attempt to combine old Queen material with songs associated with Rodgers´ earlier career did not work that well and therefore the band members wrote fourteen completely new songs for this album, which are all credited to all three of them. Musically they range from Rock ballads to Blues-Rock pieces, all of which suit Rodgers´ voice perfectly. The new material turned out to be surprisingly quite excellent. Of course the result proved that the band had to adopt to the lead singer rather than vice versa.
In retrospect this is another excellent album in the long history of Rodgers´ achievements and his many fans will find here exactly what they expect from him. May plays some amazing guitar solos, which he always was capable of doing and overall the album is truly much better that I, and many other people, expected. The cosmos rocks indeed.
This deluxe version includes a DVD with material filmed in Japan during the original 2005 tour, previously unreleased, which is definitely a great fun to watch. Better late then never!

  | MARIANNE FAITHFULL ~ BROKEN ENGLISH (DELUXE EDITION) ISLAND 602537117321 (Barcode: 602537117321) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1979 Released: 2013
Although this is the fifth album by British singer / songwriter Marianne FaithfullFind albums by this artist, in many respects it is also her debut album opening the second stage of her career. The four earlier albums, recorded all between 1965 and 1967, and her entire life between the mid sixties and late seventies is an epic story full of tragedies, misfortunes, drug addiction and disappointments of Pop stardom. The fact that Faithfull managed to survive those years and emerge injured, but not broken is nothing short of a miracle. The hardships changed her in many ways, but as far as her career is concerned the most dramatic change was her "new" voice, cracked, deep and coarse and yet incredibly expressive and honest.
Musically Faithfull made an almost complete about face, leaving the sweet Pop image of her early days behind and moved full force into Alternative Rock, partly Punk and partly Hard Rock influenced. The subject matter of her songs also changed into a highly aware social / political / moral critique and anti-populist statements. This was a completely new Marianne Faithfull, no question about it.
This deluxe edition includes in addition to the remastered original album also a previously unreleased original mix of the album, which is nothing short of a revelation. The well known version of the album is drenched with synthesizer sounds, which is often quite difficult to bear. The alternate mix gets rid of the awful synthesizer (the plague of the late 1970s and 1980s) and the resulting album, cleaned up is a 100 % Rock masterpiece. Anybody who does not know that mix is simply totally in the dark about how good this classic album really should sound. This addition also includes a short film made at the time of the original album´s release as well as some later remixes of the title song as well as her new version of the song "Sister Morphine" made famous by the Rolling StonesFind albums by this artist on their "Sticky FingersFind albums with this title" album.
Overall this is one of the classic albums of the era, right at the dusk of Classic Rock, still biting with its honesty, directness and intrinsic beauty, which survived the tides of time seamlessly. This definitely should be a part of the basic diet of every Rock addict on this planet.

  | SANDY DENNY ~ THE NOTES AND THE WORDS – A COLLECTION OF DEMOS AND RARITIES ISLAND 602537124695 (Barcode: 602537124695) ~ UK ~ Folk-Rock Recorded: 1966 - 1979 Released: 2012
In 2010 IslandFind albums on this label Records released a nineteen CD Box Set simply entitled "Sandy DennyFind albums with this title", which supposedly collected the complete set of studio recordings by the diva of British Folk-Rock Sandy DennyFind albums by this artist, who during her tragically short lifespan singlehandedly defined the genre. The label largely underestimated the public interest in Denny´s music decades after it was recorded and as a result the limited edition Box Set was sold out immediately upon its release. If you wish to purchase a copy of the Box Set now, it will make your bank account lighter by about a thousand British Pounds.
In 2011 Island released the four solo albums by Denny in the 2CD deluxe edition format, adding some of the bonus tracks available in the Box Set as the second CD in each of these editions. And in 2012 here comes this 4 CD new Box Set, which again presents more of these bonus tracks, many overlapping those already present on the deluxe editions. So we can witness again the old practices of record labels, which led to their demise, still being practiced during their final moments. Although this Box Set is lovingly and lavishly packaged, it simply misses the point as far as record collectors and Denny´s many fans worldwide are concerned. The label should have simply repressed another edition of the original Box Set. What a pity / stupidity…
Of course, in complete contrast to the marketing strategy described above, the music this Box Set contains is absolutely divine from start to finish. Everything that Denny recorded is blessed by her unique talent and God given gift, which she passed to her listeners. Sadly her self-destructive personality robbed us from many more sublime moments, that might have been, but such is life. The selection here presents Denny in many different setting, from a cappella to fronting a full band, and regardless of the setting she always triumphs with her voice simply shattering the listener´s heart to smatterings.
One might wonder why in the decades that passed no other singer could come close to what Sandy Denny had to offer. Of course the Folk-Rock lost most of its popular appeal by the end of the 1970s, like many other genres that thrived during the Golden Decade era, but still Folk-Rock did not vanish from the face of the earth. In retrospect we must admit, that listening to Denny is after all a once in a lifetime opportunity, so let´s enjoy while it lasts.
If you don´t own the "Sandy Denny" Box Set, you absolutely must get this one, as long as it is available. Essential listening!

  | FAIRPORT CONVENTION ~ RISING FOR THE MOON (DELUXE EDITION) ISLAND 602537492527 (Barcode: 602537492527) ~ UK ~ Folk-Rock Recorded: 1974 - 1975 Released: 2013
This is the 10th studio album by British Folk-Rock legends Fairport ConventionFind albums by this artist, the band that basically established Folk-Rock as a genre on the British Isles. It is also one of the two albums (together with "Live ConventionFind albums with this title", which preceded it) to feature the diva of the genre Sandy DannyFind albums by this artist in her second stint with the group. Sandy left the group after recording three groundbreaking albums with them in 1969 (their second to fourth albums: "What We Did On Our HolidaysFind albums with this title", "UnhalfbrickingFind albums with this title" and "Liege & LiefFind albums with this title") to follow her solo career and rejoined them in 1974 after she married Trevor LucasFind albums by this artist, the band´s guitarist at the time. The band also included violinist Dave SwarbrickFind albums by this artist, guitarist Jerry DonahueFind albums by this artist, bassist Dave PeggFind albums by this artist and drummer Dave MattacksFind albums by this artist (who was replaced by Bruce RowlandsFind albums by this artist during the recording session). This was also the first album featuring only original material written by the band´s members and no arrangements of traditional tunes were used.
Danny was obviously quite dominant on this album, both as a writer, contributing seven of the eleven songs on the album, and of course as the lead singer, an area she had absolutely no competition in from any other female vocalist at the time. As a result this is one of the strongest albums Fairport Convention recorded during their illustrious career. This deluxe edition of the album includes some bonus tracks and a second CD with the legendary live concert recorded at the LA Troubadour in 1974 released here in its entirety for the first time.
In retrospect this is a classic album of the British Folk-Rock legacy and with the added value of Sandy Danny´s presence an extraordinary piece of music history, worthy of an honorable place in any serious record collection.

  | SPOOKY TOOTH ~ THE ISLAND YEARS (AN ANTHOLOGY) 1967-1974 ISLAND 602547053114 (Barcode: 602547053114) ~ UK ~ Pop & Rock Recorded: 1967 - 1974 Released: 2015
This magnificent Box Set collects all the recordings by the seminal British Rock band Spooky ToothFind albums by this artist, perhaps the most underrated of all British bands active at the late 1960s / early 1970s. It includes all seven albums recorded by the various Spooky Tooth lineups for Island records, before they disbanded, as well as the only album by the band Art, which was in fact an early version of Spooky Tooth and finally a previously unreleased live album by the band.
Spooky Tooth formed when the four members of Art: vocalist / keyboardist Mike HarrisonFind albums by this artist, guitarist Luther GrosvenorFind albums by this artist, bassist Greg RidleyFind albums by this artist and drummer Mike KellieFind albums by this artist, were joined by the American (resident in UK at the time) vocalist / keyboardist Gary WrightFind albums by this artist, who was also a superb songwriter. The double lead vocals / double keyboards effect created a potent and incredibly spacious sound, which was completely unique among the bands active at a time, and combined with truly outstanding songwriting abilities by the band members simply placed them way at the top of the British scene as far as ambitious and original Rock is concerned.
As all British Rock bands at the time, also Spooky Tooth owed a lot to the Blues revival, which swept the Isles a decade earlier. The Blues motifs are clearly evident in their music, but they are more subtle than in similar groups like FreeFind albums by this artist or Ten Years AfterFind albums by this artist. Therefore Spooky Tooth did not enter the Blues-Rock niche per se, as did many of their contemporaries, staying closer to the path set by melodic Hard Rock pioneers. It is obvious that Spooky Tooth paved the way for other British bands, like Humble PieFind albums by this artist, which included Greg Ridley as a founding member when he left Spooky Tooth to join Humble Pie. Spooky Tooth and Humble Pie have many similarities in their musical approach, which is based on solid melodic themes, great riffs, Bluesy vocals and extended instrumental soloing.
The set includes the highly controversial album the band recorded with French Avant-Garde electronic music composer Pierre Henry, which is one of very few such experiments. The fact that the group recorded such daring projects and many of their other qualities firmly places Spooky Tooth as proto-Prog pioneers and to say the truth they had more Progressive tendencies than most other Prog groups at the time, although they were never credited and recognized as part of the Prog movement.
This beautifully researched and lavishly packaged Box Set is a long overdue tribute to one of the best British Rock bands, including a plethora of bonus tracks, a well written booklet by the producer / researcher Mark PowellFind albums by this artist, who is well known for his love and total dedication to the subject. I can´t imagine a serious music collection without this box being a part of it. Truly essential piece of music history!

  | FOTHERINGAY ~ NOTHING MORE: THE COLLECTED FOTHERINGAY ISLAND 602547184825 (Barcode: 602547184825) ~ UK ~ Folk-Rock Recorded: 1970 - 1971 Released: 2015
This marvelous Box Set collects all the know recordings by the shot-lived Folk-Rock group FotheringayFind albums by this artist, formed by the divine singer / songwriter Sandy DennyFind albums by this artist, after she left Fairport ConventionFind albums by this artist in late 1969 shortly after the group completed the recording of their epic fourth album "Liege & LiefFind albums with this title". Denny joined forces with her partner at the time, vocalist / acoustic guitarist Trevor LucasFind albums by this artist and they drafted into the group American-born lead guitarist Jerry DonahueFind albums by this artist, bassist Pat DonaldsonFind albums by this artist and drummer Gerry ConwayFind albums by this artist, who all sung occasional backing vocals.
Denny´s decision to leave Fairport Convention was primarily prompted by her will to sing her original material and move the traditional material a bit into the background and Fotheringay gave her the opportunity to do exactly that. In addition the group had a more Rock oriented sound, with incredible lead guitar work by Donahue. By mid-1970 the group released their first eponymous album, which met with positive reaction by the critics, but sadly achieved only limited commercial success, probably because it was unjustly compared to Fairport Convention, rather than recognized as a completely new direction.
By late 1970 the group has begun recording their follow up album, but things started to disintegrate rapidly and by early 1971 Fotheringay disbanded, with the second album uncompleted. Shortly afterwards Denny launched her career as a solo artists, briefly rejoining Fairport Convention in 1974-1975 and then continued her solo career until her tragic death in 1978. The "Fotheringay 2Find albums with this title" album was reconstructed from the abandoned studio master tapes and partly re-recorded and was finally released in 2008.
In retrospect this collection is a tribute to the incredible talents of Sandy Denny, who remains to this very day the absolute Empress of British Folk-Rock. Her legacy, all recorded in a span of a single decade, constitute some of the most beautiful singing and songwriting in the history of popular music.
This collection includes both Fotheringay albums, a plethora of bonus tracks, demos, alternate tracks, radio broadcasts and live concerts, all spread over three CDs. BBC TV performances are included on a DVD, which is also included. The accompanying booklet is informative and comprehensive and includes many wonderful photographs of Denny and the band members.
This is a remarkable piece of British music history, which to this day sounds almost too good to be true and constitutes an essential part of any decent music collection. Simply a must!

  | FREE ~ FOREVER ISLAND 984255 (Barcode: 602498425510) ~ UK ~ Blues-Rock Recorded: 1970 Released: 2006
Forever indeed! Almost 40 years later nothing that happened rivals (and I mean nothing) the raw energy and the pure natural genius of the greatest Blues-Rock band of all times. Although the original band existed (on and off with attempted reunions) for a brief period of time, the mark it left on the Rock world would be decisive and everlasting. Unfortunately with the death of the band’s guitarist Paul Kossoff in 1976 the chances of rebirth were gone forever. The original band reached its peak in 1970 after about two years of existence, which included extensive touring and two albums (released on Island Records), which were excellent in every possible way and definitive examples of the new Blues-Rock genre. Paul Rodger’s phenomenal voice and deep feel for the blues (unrivaled to this day by any singer) and Kossoff’s brilliant guitar work, backed up by rock solid and yet very inventive rhythm section consisting of Andy Fraser on bass and Simon Kirke on drums created an ideal vehicle to deliver the bluesy tunes in a new fashion, unheard before. Although the band managed to establish a dedicated following in UK among the blues fans, their express to stardom happened in 1970 with the release of their single “All Right Now”, which (completely unexpectedly) topped the UK and world charts. The sudden success turned out to be quite deadly for the band, whose members had a tough time handling the unexpected stardom. The band literally fell apart soon after and the attempts to reunite failed, mostly to Kossoff’s drug related illness, eventually leading to his death. The recorded legacy of the original band includes four studio and one live album, all of which are worth their weight in gold of course. As to the Free video material, things have been sadly extremely sketchy until now. This exquisite 2 DVD set comes to remedy the situation and does so with flying colors. This is obviously a labor of love as the material assembled here covers every little bit in existence of Free footage, including privately filmed material, TV clips and other oddities. Almost everything present here comes for 1970 – the crucial period of the band, which was at its peak. DVD 1 includes TV appearances in Germany and UK (and a lot of other stuff) and DVD 2 covers the entire Free concert at the Isle Of Wight festival (only partly in video, most of it being audio only). In addition there are current interviews with the remaining Free members (Rodgers, Fraser & Kirke) and other people related to their history. All together over 4 hours of sublime archive material, which of course is an absolute must for every Free fan on the globe. I must say I needed to clear my throat quite a few times while watching this and I’m sure many of you will feel the same way. Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and DTS, 275 minutes.

IslandFind albums on this label’s owner Chris BlackwellFind albums by this artist heard some early recordings by the group and offered to release an album with their music, supporting them with a modest budget. The group constructed a special studio to record their music (as the existing facilities at the time we inadequate for electronic music) and eventually produced their opus, which was released on Island in 1969. The initial reaction to the album was very limited (it sold only a few hundred copies) but in time the album achieved a legendary status it deserves. The groundbreaking approach to music and the bold ideas were of course aeons ahead of their time, but the music still sounds quite fascinating today. David Vorhaus later kept the White Noise name alive by releasing several albums under the moniker. The album was out of print for extended periods of time and the remastered edition with extensive liner notes by reissue specialist Mark PowellFind albums by this artist is most welcome. A classic.

This new edition, which marks the 35th Anniversary of the album’s release, not only restores the sound of the original recording to its full glory but also adds some superb live performances, like the content of the promotional EP “Live In Memphis” (an ultra-rare collector’s item) and an entire second CD which includes the band’s BBC recordings made following the release of the album. | SANDY DENNY ~ LIVE AT THE BBC ISLAND 984992 (Barcode: 602498499283) ~ UK ~ Folk-Rock Recorded: 1966 - 1973 Released: 2007
This lavishly and lovingly produced Box Set collects all existing (audio & video) BBC recordings by Folk-Rock heroin Sandy DennyFind albums by this artist, who was not only one of the most distinctive voices of the Golden Age but also a superb songwriter. This collection spans from 1966 to 1973 and covers her solo career, which was before and after her being a member of StrawbsFind albums by this artist, Fairport ConventionFind albums by this artist and FotheringayFind albums by this artist. Most of the material included here presents Sandy as “naked” as a singer can appear – just her hair-raising vocals and acoustic guitar or piano (only a few tracks include other backing musicians), which of course is for the best as she never really needed anything more. Her angelic and deeply penetrating voice and her theatrical ability to express the lyrics are so powerful that the experience is almost unparalleled. Most of the songs are her own (music & lyrics) and just a few are her arrangements of traditional folk material. The DVD includes the only footage in existence of Sandy performing. The set also includes beautiful photographs and excerpts of Sandy’s diaries. Sandy’s tragically premature death in 1978 put an end to her exquisite input to the world of music and she is sadly missed. I don’t think anything more needs to be said here – this is absolutely brilliant stuff, beyond essential for anybody who truly loves music and a must in any decent music collection.

This Box Set collects the first five (or rather four, since the fourth album was a double LP which was also released as two separate LPs in the US) albums recorded by the British Folk-Rock ensemble Incredible String BandFind albums by this artist and released between 1966 and 1968 on the ElektraFind albums on this label label. Originating from Glasgow, Scotland the band started as a trio playing acoustic Folk music and consisted of Robin WilliamsonFind albums by this artist, Clive PalmerFind albums by this artist and Mike HeronFind albums by this artist. Following the release of the first album Palmer left and the rest of the albums were recorded by the duo of Williamson and Heron. Legendary bassist Danny ThompsonFind albums by this artist guests on the second album which also features Williamson´s girlfriend at the time Licorice McCechnieFind albums by this artist. Licorice and Rose SimpsonFind albums by this artist, Heron´s girlfriend at the time, take part in the recording of the fourth (double) album.
The band recorded three more (one of them another double) albums for Elektra and then switched to IslandFind albums on this label Records, recording five more albums for the label before calling it a day in 1974. In total they recorded twelve incredible albums (two of them double) in the span of just eight years, a remarkable achievement by any standard. They also appeared extensively on the BBC, which produced several radio session compilations released later on CDs.
The albums included in this Box Set are a wonderful testimony of the rapid and wondrous development the Incredible String Band from a rather straightforward Folk trio to a Psychedelic, almost Avant-Garde Progressive Fork-Rock ensemble of incredible quality, almost unparalleled by any other act on both sides of the pond. The increasingly complex musical ideas and poetic lyrics are some of the finest examples of the great British Folk-Rock renaissance, which swept the Isles during the Golden Decade.
Folk-Rock fans, who don´t have these albums in their collection, will find this Box Set as absolutely essential, especially the younger music lovers, who missed listening to this superb music while it was happening in real time. The older ones might want to renew these experiences by giving the Incredible String Band another chance, as they were indeed incredible. Side Note The "Original Album SeriesFind albums with this title" by Warner Bros.Find albums on this label, the "Original Album ClassicsFind albums with this title" by SonyFind albums on this label, the "5 Original AlbumsFind albums with this title" by UniversalFind albums on this label, the Box Sets by RhinoFind albums on this label and other similar releases are an archetypal example of how good intentions turn sour. Although these new editions often bring back to life some of the best music ever made on this planet, which in many cases has been lost in the tides of time and was unavailable on the market for ages, they suffer from an unforgivable disregard for the essence of cultural values and general sloppiness, contrary to human decency, which requires as to treat our Cultural Legacy with respect and loyalty.
The Box Sets produced under these monikers have no discographical information whatsoever about the lineups, musician names, composers, lyricists, dates and places of recording, original release data and even basic copyright data (the last is strictly illegal BTW). Although the original LP sleeves are reproduced, they are often edited and information (which would be in most cases too small to be readable) is removed. Most importantly these Box Sets don't include any booklet offering a historical background and perspective about the Artists and the Music, which are extremely important and vital to the preservation of our Culture and passing the knowledge to the next generations.
In short the fact that these Box Sets are meant to be inexpensive, does not mean that they have to be cheap. Considering the fact how many times this music has been sold over and over again by the labels, this is a crying shame!

This album has nothing to do with Japan, as it was recorded in Europe, although the group was quite popular in Japan at the time. This album represents in a way a comeback to the acoustic version of the band, with just Wincott and Baird up front, accompanied by an orchestra at times, doing what they do best. In many respects it is the best effort of the later period of the band and a perfect parting gift. Worth investigation!
