  | AALTONEN, HELASVUO, HAUTA-AHO, VESALA / EDWARD VESALA ENSEMBLE ~ JAZZ LIISA VOL. 17 & VOL. 18 SVART 100 (Barcode: 6430065583516) ~ FINLAND ~ Avant-Garde Jazz Recorded: 1973 - 1974 Released: 2018
The two "Jazzstudio" broadcasts compiled on this CD focus on the iconic figure of drummer / composer / bandleader and Godfather of modern Finnish Jazz, Edward VesalaFind albums by this artist, who is probably the most famous Finnish Jazz musician outside of his native country. Born in 1945, Vesala was active on the local Jazz scene since the late 1960s and until his tragically premature death in 1999 at the ridiculous young age of 54. His premiere recording was the little known album "NykysuomalaistaFind albums with this title" (Contemporary Finnish) from 1969 and the full debut "NanaFind albums with this title" came a year later. In 1972 he took part in his first ECMFind albums on this label album, the Jan Garbarek´s "TriptykonFind albums with this title" and soon after recorded his debut album for the label "Nan MadolFind albums with this title". He recorded five more albums for ECM and also participated on albums by Polish trumpeter Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist. On the whole he left an impressive recorded legacy, including releases on his own LeoFind albums on this label Records.
The first session presents the Edward Vesala trio, with bassist Teppo Hauta-AhoFind albums by this artist and pianist Esa HelasvuoFind albums by this artist on one track composed by him and then with saxophonist Juhani AaltonenFind albums by this artist (who replaces Helasvuo) on two tracks, both composed by Vesala. Whereas the first track is still pretty conventional, the two other tracks are mostly freely improvised and explode with energy and spontaneous exploration as appropriate for Avant-garde at its best.
The second session presents the Edward Vesala EnsembleFind albums by this artist, a collection of top Finnish Jazz improvisers at the time: trumpeter Simo SalminenFind albums by this artist, trombonist Mircea StanFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Juhani Aaltonen, Paroni PaakkunainenFind albums by this artist and Pentti LahtiFind albums by this artist, bassist Teppo Hauta-Aho, electric bassist Make LievonenFind albums by this artist and Antero HonkanenFind albums by this artist who added some electronic effects on one track. This lineup is very similar to the lineup that recorded the a.m. ECM debut a few months after this session was recorded. They play three stacks, all by Vesala, all of which were later recorded for that album. In addition a short interview with Vesala in also present, in Finnish of course, which makes it sadly accessible only to Finnish speaking audience. (A transcript in English would have been most welcome).
The music is spectacular and breathtaking, a true Avant-garde masterpiece combining composed and group-improvised parts, mystic Nordic moods and brilliant performances by these excellent musicians. These versions of the material are quite different from the recorded versions, which makes this session especially valuable.
These two sessions are some of the most important documents of Finnish Jazz and are definitely among the strongest releases in the entire Jazz Liisa series.
Overall this is some of the most staggering music created in Europe in the early to mid 1970s that one is able to hear and for European Jazz connoisseurs this is an absolute must have! Side Note The Finnish independent label SvartFind albums on this label Records released an unprecedented series of albums called Pop Liisa and Jazz Liisa, which present priceless historical recordings of Finnish Rock, Progressive Rock, Jazz-Rock Fusion and Jazz music, recorded live and broadcasted from the Liisankatu Studios in Helsinki under the "Popstudio" and "Jazzstudio" monikers between 1972 and 1977. The studios were owned by the YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company), a public broadcasting service, which not only allowed the burgeoning Finnish music scene at the time to be exposed but also carefully archived the recordings for future generations. All this incredible music was previously unissued and collectively is probably the most important document of Finnish music from that period ever assembled.
The music was released on 36 LPs (Pop Liisa Vol. 01 to Vol. 18 and Jazz Liisa Vol. 01 to Vol. 18) and on 18 CDs with every two consecutive volumes combined on one CD.
The sound quality is absolutely superb, often better than the sound quality on the LPs released by these artists at the time. Many of the groups appearing on these albums never managed to record an album and these recordings are the only recorded legacy in existence of their activity. The released are accompanied by well researched and intelligent liner notes.
This archival project is an outstanding example of how Cultural Legacy should be treated as well as of exemplary dedication to record producing professionalism.

  | ALWARI TUOHITORVI / KIRKA & ISLANDERS ~ POP LIISA VOL. 11 & VOL. 12 SVART 018 ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Soul Fusion Recorded: 1974 - 1975 Released: 2016
The Finnish group Alwari TuohitorviFind albums by this artist, formed in 1968, went through a major personnel change in 1972 and the new lineup stabilized with lead guitarist Seppo AlajokiFind albums by this artist, guitarist Jukka RautiainenFind albums by this artist and bassist Mika SundqvistFind albums by this artist, all three sharing vocal duties, and drummer Raimo PikanenFind albums by this artist. When their live radio broadcast was captured they were already working on their eponymous debut album, which was released a while later, but none of the songs on that album were featured on the radio show, which presented nine songs covering some of their Prog era material, like the covers of songs by Wishbone AshFind albums by this artist and Beggars OperaFind albums by this artist and other Classic Rock items, as well as one original song by Alajoki. The material clearly marked their musical shift towards conventional Rock, following the general trend on the local Finnish scene, which after the first Progressive Rock wave was over became almost completely Rock dominated.
Vocalist KirkaFind albums by this artist (a. k. a. Kirka BabitzinFind albums by this artist) was a successful Finnish artist with a career spanning six decades. He changed styles over the years moving within the Pop and Rock idioms and recorded over sixty albums until his death in 2007. His appearance on the live radio broadcast catches him with his band The IslandersFind albums by this artist, a superb Soul-Rock outfit, expanded to a ten-piece smoking Brass Rock, which included Romanian (resident in Finland) trombonist Mircea StanFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Pentti LahtiFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Kassu HalonenFind albums by this artist, guitarist Esko VesterinenFind albums by this artist, bassist Matti TyniFind albums by this artist and drummer Juoni KestiFind albums by this artist, strengthened by three top Finnish Jazz musicians trumpeter Mike KoskinenFind albums by this artist and saxophonists Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist and Tapio TuominenFind albums by this artist. Together they perform eight songs, three covers by Pop / Soul / Blues songs (BeatlesFind albums by this artist, Otis ReddingFind albums by this artist, Edgar Winter BandFind albums by this artist) and five excellent original songs, two each by Stan and Halonen and one traditional Blues arranged by Stan.
Kirka´s superb voice and the spectacular band create some outstanding Jazz-Rock-Soul Fusion somewhat resembling the divine Joe CockerFind albums by this artist and his Mad Dogs & EnglishmenFind albums by this artist band with a slightly more Jazz feel.. The strength of this material and the performances turn this music into an instant classic, regardless of the Finnish lyrics, which don´t spoil the fun one bit. It is an absolute unadulterated fun from start to finish!

  | BIG BAND UMFC WARSAW ~ CLASSIC ON JAZZ MTJ 11458 (Barcode: 5906409114582) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2014 Released: 2014
During my recent visit to Warsaw my dear friend Pawel BrodowskiFind albums by this artist took me to hear a concert by the Big Band UMFC WarsawFind albums by this artist, which simply stands for Big Band of the Frederic Chopin Music University in Warsaw, Poland´s most prestigious music education institution. Although the program of that concert was different from the material recorded on this album (it was a tribute to Frank SinatraFind albums by this artist´s Christmas repertoire - more or less), hearing the Big Band live (and the two vocalists) was great fun and certainly an aesthetic pleasure. It was during the intermission that I met the Big Band leader / conductor Piotr KostrzewaFind albums by this artist, who explained that the members of the Big Band are UMFC students, which of course was not a surprise, and that they are all Classical Music students, which of course was completely surprising. Classical musicians that can swing the way this Big Band swings, is a major surprise indeed. Even more surprising was the discovery that the UMFC does not have a Jazz department, in spite of the immense popularity of Jazz in Poland since many decades and the fact that most other regional Polish towns (Katowice, Wroclaw, Gdansk, Lodz, Bydgoszcz and others) have Jazz departments at their Music Academies, some of which are truly excellent. It´s a high time for Warsaw to catch up! It seems that Kostrzewa singlehandedly managed to turn the classicist into swingers and at least the UMFC acknowledges the need of such activity within its walls.
This album presents eleven popular Classical Music compositions arranged for a Jazz Big Band by some of the most famous Big Band arrangers and in three cases by drummer / arranger Wojtek KostrzewaFind albums by this artist, Piotr Kostrzewa´s son. In many cases attempts to treat Classical Music in a Jazzy way end up being a trivialization of the original compositions and sadly also kitschy pastiches of Jazz. However, in the case of this album, the Classical pieces serve only as a harmonic background and melodic hints and they are wholly transformed into the Jazz Big Band idiom, with many solo spots enabling the young musicians and invited special guests to show off their chops and overall swing happily and vigorously from start to finish. Considering that Big Bands are a rare commodity these days, Kostrzewa´s dedication and initiative are truly praiseworthy by itself and as a tool to expand they young generation´s musical horizons.
Overall this is a very entertaining and well done Big Band album which can certainly satisfy many Jazz fans, especially those with a special relation to Big Bands. Hopefully the band will continue to produce more albums in the not too distant future.

  | ERIC BURDON & WAR ~ THE COMPLETE CD COLLECTION FAR OUT 603497819744 (Barcode: 603497819744) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1969 - 1970 Released: 2025
This Box Set presents the reissue / remaster of the recorded legacy by British singer / songwriter Eric BurdonFind albums by this artist and the Californian group WarFind albums by this artist. It includes the two original albums recorded by Burdon and War: “Eric Burdon Declares `War`Find albums with this title” and the 2LP album “The Black-Man`s BurdonFind albums with this title”, both released in 1970 and the 1976 compilation of previously unissued material called “Love Is All AroundFind albums with this title”. Most of the material was composed / written collectively by War members, with a few Blues standards and Rock songs by others also included. There are no bonus tracks, but the sound quality is sensational.
War were a septet, which played a superb mixture of Pop, Rock, Blues, Soul, Rhythm And Blues and a touch of Jazz, and combined with the sensational vocal capabilities of Burdon they offered an irresistible sound and became a live sensation. Sadly, the association with Burdon was short-lived, but the material they managed to record together is truly classic and sounds as fresh today as it did at the time.
Many of the vocals by Burdon were close to spoken word and in retrospect might be considered as a precursor of rap. Burdon’s affinity to the Blues was the most distinctive characteristic of his vocals, since the early days when he was the lead singer of the AnimalsFind albums by this artist, and he remains as one of the best British Blues singers ever.
Overall, this Box Set is an absolute delight from start to finish. For the veterans among us, this is a wonderful trip down the nostalgic lane, and for the young listeners, this should be a true revelation, which proves that this music puts everything recorded today to shame.

  | EDWARD CZERNY ORCHESTRA ~ POLISH RADIO JAZZ ARCHIVES VOL.16 POLSKIE RADIO 1666 (Barcode: 5907812246662) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 1956 - 1966 Released: 2014
This is the sixteenth installment in the new series of releases initiated by the Polish Radio, which presents archive Jazz recordings. Radio recordings are always a fabulous source of remarkable material, and as far as Polish Jazz history is concerned, the Polish Radio, which was a state monopoly for 45 years, recorded over time a plethora of invaluable material, which apart from the albums released by the Polskie Nagrania record company (also a state monopoly), is the only available additional source of Polish Jazz recordings. For many years Polish Radio recorded concerts presented during Poland´s most important Jazz venues, including the annual Jazz Jamboree Festival and many other festivals as well.
This album is a first in a series presenting music recorded by the Polish Radio Big Bands and presents the orchestra led by composer / arranger / bandleader Edward CzernyFind albums by this artist, one of the most active musical figures in Poland´s post-WWII history. Czerny, who was born in Zabrze, one of the Silesian industrial towns, received classical musical education in Berlin before the war. He managed to avoid being grafted into the German army due to a disability and spent the war in his hometown. Immediately after the war he became active forming and leading orchestras, first in Silesia and later on in Warsaw, where he moved in 1955. Among his various activities he was the conductor and artistic director of the Polish Radio Orchestra / Big Band for many years and recorded thousands of compositions for the radio, some of them his own. He retired from conducting by the mid 1970s and spent the rest of his life composing. He moved to Germany in 1981, where he died in 2003.
Although Czerny was not a Jazz personality as such, he had a beautiful sense of Swing and a deep sympathy towards Jazz compositions, which he demonstrated in his wonderful arrangements of Jazz standards for his orchestra. Above all he was a superb orchestrator, which is evident in all his work. This album presents nineteen recordings made between 1956 and 1966 including mostly arrangements of Jazz / Swing standards by legendary composers like Glenn MillerFind albums by this artist, Stan KentonFind albums by this artist, Quincy JonesFind albums by this artist, Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist and others. There are also four original compositions by Czerny. Interestingly two compositions by the Czech composer Karel KrautgartnerFind albums by this artist, who was another great bandleader / conductor active behind the Iron Curtain, are also included.
Fans of vintage Jazz sound and swinging, danceable tunes should have a field day with this material, but it´s worth remembering that Czerny and his music influenced an entire generation of musicians, who were about to become the first Polish post-WWII wave of modern Jazz musicians, creating one of the most fascinating European Jazz scenes.
The beautifully restored sound quality is excellent and the warm ambience of the analog recording is a true joy. As usual with this series, which is very reasonably priced, I miss the presence of "in depth" liner notes / booklet, which should convey the circumstances at which this music was recorded and its importance to the development of Jazz in Poland. Nevertheless this is an absolutely essential piece of Jazz history which every Jazz fan will surely consider an absolute must.

  | ELTON DEAN / HOWARD RILEY QUARTET ~ ALL THE TRADITION SLAM 201 ~ UK ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 1990 Released: 1990
This is a wonderful and sadly almost completely overlooked album by British Jazz modernists / revolutionaries: saxophonist Elton DeanFind albums by this artist and pianist Howard RileyFind albums by this artist, recorded in a quartet setting with bassist Paul RogersFind albums by this artist and drummer Mark SandersFind albums by this artist. The album presents just five lengthy tracks, three of which are standards and two are original compositions co-credited to all four quartet members.
As the album’s title suggests, the album is an attempt to “combine” the traditional Jazz approach with the Avant-Garde / Free Jazz / Improvised Music approach these musicians are usually associated with. The musical “sandwich” (five layers, mind you) of Jazz standard / improvised music / Jazz standard (but a John ColtraneFind albums by this artist one) / improvised music / Jazz standard, creates a musical dish, which offers a mixture of “tastes”, reflecting the difference and the common ground of its ingredients.
This is quite a challenging listening material of course, but listeners familiar with the work of Dean and Riley won’t be surprised by anything happening herein, and most probably with enjoy it immensely. The contrasting layers of the music create a new way of digesting conflicting tastes, which of course is all for the best. Of course Dean and Riley are both superb virtuosi.
Overall, this is a brilliant showcase of the British Avant-Garde Jazz, served in an unusual packaging, making things even more interesting. Jazz traditionalists might find this music way too challenging for their wellbeing, but Free Jazz enthusiasts will find this sublimely interesting. Definitely a “strange brew”!

  | DIXIE WARSAW JAZZMEN ~ CHINA BOY NOT ON LABEL ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2012 Released: 2012
This delightful album presents the Polish Traditional Jazz ensemble Dixie Warsaw JazzmenFind albums by this artist, which comprises of musicians who used to play with other Polish Trad ensembles like HagawFind albums by this artist, Vistula River Brass BandFind albums by this artist, Gold WashboardFind albums by this artist and others: trumpeter Stefan WozniakowskiFind albums by this artist, clarinetist and vocalist Andrzej BigolasFind albums by this artist, bass saxophonist Wlodzimierz HalikFind albums by this artist and banjoist and vocalist Zygmunt JagodzinskiFind albums by this artist. They invited the violinist Maciej StrzelczykFind albums by this artist as a special guest and finally added the Fuerte String QuartetFind albums by this artist to play with them, creating a most unusual Trad ensemble with a new approach and rich sound texture.
The music includes seven classic Dixieland compositions mostly dating from the early 20th Century, newly arranged to include the string quartet parts and featuring Polish lyrics on some of them. The overall effect is quite surprising and fresh, which should please many listeners, even those who usually don´t listen to Trad Jazz. It is great to see Trad Jazz still being performed vigorously and with such obvious dedication. Many younger Jazz listeners, who are unaware of the early history of the music, should find this most educational on top of being highly enjoyable.
Strzelczyk plays some wonderful solos here and all the rest of the musicians perform spotlessly and with inspiration. This is a great opportunity to take a peek at the less serious, demanding and often over-intellectual Jazz by visiting the historic sources of the music and simply having fun! Very nice indeed!

  | PIOTR DOMAGALA / KWARTET SLASKI ~ CHOWANCE GAP (Barcode: 5905669506014) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion Recorded: 2016 Released: 2016
This is the fourth album by Polish Jazz guitarist / composer Piotr DomagalaFind albums by this artist, recorded in an unusual setting with the Kwartet SlaskiFind albums by this artist String Quartet (violinists Szymon KrzeszowiecFind albums by this artist and Arkadiusz KubicaFind albums by this artist, violist Lukasz SyrnickiFind albums by this artist and cellist Piotr JanosikFind albums by this artist) and percussionist Slawomir BernyFind albums by this artist. Together they perform eleven original compositions, all by Domagala.
The music is an interesting amalgam of Jazz, Fusion, Classical Music and World Music, a true cross-genre voyage, based on beautiful melodic themes and featuring interesting and unique arrangements. The compositions are full of typical Polish / Slavic melancholy and mysticism, expressed both by the melodic / harmonic setting and the complex arrangements, fabulously executed by the string quartet, which often sounds like layers of synthesizers rather than violins, viola and cello. In that respect this is one of the most unique projects I came across in 2016 not only on the Polish scene, but worldwide.
Domagala is a very accomplished guitarist and plays many breathtaking passages on this album. Most of the guitar work is acoustic and uses a plethora of different guitar techniques. A few electric parts are also present, but those are overall less significant as the album presents mostly a serene, intimate atmosphere, which is best served by the acoustic approach, which of course also corresponds well to the string quartet.
The string quartet, as already mentioned, is absolutely superb, playing completely originally and free of any Classical Music conventions, which often limit classical musicians and cause their cooperation with Jazz musicians to fail miserably. In this case the cooperation works out perfectly and the string quartet contributions are equally important to those of the leader.
Berny is an ideal choice for this album, where his great sensitivity and rhythmic proficiency suit the music perfectly. Berny´s experience with World Music and Jazz oriented projects is very extensive and his contributions here emphasize the rhythmic qualities of the music gracefully.
Overall this is a striking album, which presents ambitious and innovative music, superbly executed by the participating musicians. It is a wonderful example of intelligent music, which can also be very emotional and aesthetically pleasing.
The album, which was recorded in the excellent RecPublica Studios, offers a stunning sound quality, which should satisfy even the sternest Hi-Fi connoisseurs. Wholeheartedly recommended!

The six-piece band and guest musicians go through two sets of songs, mostly written by Haynes, with just a few borrowed treasures. This is music straight from the heart and one should take it as it is, without looking for things that aren´t there. Haynes and his guitar are trademarks of contemporary US Blues-Rock and they kick bottoms. Warmly recommended!

  | HOLDSWORTH / WARLEIGH / MATHEWSON / SPRING ~ WARLEIGH MANOR JAZZ IN BRITAIN 01 ~ UK ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 1979 Released: 2020
This is an archive album by a quartet of British Jazz musicians: guitarist Allan HoldsworthFind albums by this artist, saxophonist / flautist Ray WarleighFind albums by this artist, bassist Ron MathewsonFind albums by this artist and drummer Bryan SpringFind albums by this artist. Subtitled “The Ron Mathewson Tapes Vol. 1”, it presents an informal cassette tape recording of a session captured (probably) in 1979 and kept by the bassist, who recently donated his archives to Jazz in Britain Ltd. incorporating the British Jazz Sound Archive, a new not-for-profit organization whose aim is to collect, curate, preserve, celebrate and promote the legacy of British Jazz musicians. The archive collects, curates and preserves off-air and other recordings of British Jazz performances. This CD is their first release.
The music reveals an almost completely unknown facet of Holdsworth playing spontaneous Improvised Music, rather than Jazz-Rock Fusion, an idiom he is generally associated with. In addition to playing guitar he also plays violin. The rest of the quartet members have of course a much better recognized experienced with Improvised Music / Free Jazz. The album presents just three lengthy pieces, about twenty-one, eighteen and finally eight minutes in duration. The first two pieces are completely improvised, whereas the last piece takes a turn into a more conventional Jazz playing.
In retrospect this music is no more than a curio, as it does not offer any substantial glimpse into the history of British Jazz as such. Holdsworth is certainly a fish out of water on this session, and contrary to what the liner notes say, he was never really into Improvised Music. Yes, he always wanted to experiment and do his own thing and not to be told what to do, but he was a team player and needed a support of a strong rhythm section to keep him on track. His insanely wonderful guitar playing was complex enough by itself, and it needed a balance of more conventional co-players to make any musical sense. None of his idiosyncratic playing is reflected in this music.
Of course Mathewson plays beautifully here, but his abilities are well documented by many other recordings. Warleigh plays some nice flute lines, but even he is not feeling very comfortable in this free form environment. As to Spring, his contributions are hardly audible.
Improvised Music rarely survives the “recording” test. It might sound fine while being performed, with the interpersonal excitement of the moment, but listening to it forty years later might sadly prove to be a rather pointless exercise. Not every moment of musical history captured on tape deserves apparently to be preserved for posterity on record.
Overall this album proves to be rather disappointing, but the idea behind Jazz in Britain and their aims is certainly worth pursuing, hopefully with more exciting finds in the future.

  | INWARDNESS ~ SPACE JAZZ OZELLA 085 (Barcode: 4038952000850) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Ambient Fusion Recorded: 2016 Released: 2018
This is the debut album by the InwardnessFind albums by this artist trio, which comprises of Polish guitarist / composer Maciek PyszFind albums by this artist, French saxophonist David AmarFind albums by this artist, who also plays synthesizers and French drummer / percussionist Davy SurFind albums by this artist. The album presents fifteen relatively short original compositions, co-credited to all the members of the trio.
The music, which was "spontaneously composed", presents relaxed and melodic but at the same time improvised vistas with strong World Music influences of many origins, but mostly with a Spanish / Middle Eastern flair, with the album´s title being quite appropriate to describe it. The melodic continuity is at times a challenge, and the music often enters almost completely ambient passages, only to return to a more customary path later on. As a result the flow of the music is very slow and requires dedication and attention from the potential listeners, which often is more than those are prepared to offer.
Pysz is the front instrumentalist, taking upon himself to provide the melodic content. It is interesting to follow his personal style he has been developing over the last few years. His playing on this album is quite different from his previous recordings. Amar mostly deals with the ambient background and plays the saxophone sparingly. Sur ornaments the proceedings with his percussive contribution, but only marginally "keeps time" in the traditional meaning of the term.
Overall this is an interesting album with some Jazz ties, but one that will be of more interest to connoisseurs of ambient, dreamy and meditative music, rather than to hardcore Jazz fans. Definitely worth investigating!

  | ANDRZEJ KURYLEWICZ / WANDA WARSKA / NIEMEN ~ MUZYKA TEATRALNA I TELEWIZYJNA MUZA 842 (Barcode: 5907783498428) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 1971 Released: 2006
Since the day this album was released I´ve always cherished it as one of the greatest albums ever recorded. Undoubtedly my Polish background, my love of the Polish Culture and my ability to understand the lyrics / poetry has something to do with the fact that this album is so meaningful to me, but honestly I believe that any music connoisseur in the world should be moved by this extraordinary music and performances. The music, composed by pianist / composer Andrzej KurylewiczFind albums by this artist, one of Poland´s musical icons and a precursor of Polish Jazz, was originally written for theatre and television and is presented here in a special arrangement for a string orchestra and Jazz combo, featuring two of Poland´s most extraordinary vocal talents: Wanda WarskaFind albums by this artist and NiemenFind albums by this artist. The Jazz combo consists of the composer on piano, trumpeter Andrzej PrzybielskiFind albums by this artist, bassist Jacek BednarekFind albums by this artist and drummer Wladyslaw JagielloFind albums by this artist. The lyrics are all based on Polish poetry, mainly works of the great Polish poet Cyprian Kamil NorwidFind albums by this artist. Warska, the leading interpreter of Polish poetry and faithful performer of the music composed by Kurylewicz, is a superbly sensitive singer blessed by an angelic voice and extraordinary theatrical sensitivity. Niemen is of course Poland´s all time greatest musical genius known worldwide for his achievements, but his appearance on this album is one of the highlights of his career. Niemen´s "obsession" with Norwid´s poetry comes here to an ideal fruition and his vocal parts are simply breathtaking. Although not strictly a Jazz album, the album´s music has a distinct Jazzy character and falls easily into the extended definition of the genre. Overall this is a masterpiece of rare beauty, perfect in every sense, everlasting and always inspiring. An absolute must in every respect!

This is a live recording by the Polish ensemble Kwartet PaluckiFind albums by this artist, a quartet dedicated to playing music that originates in the Paluki region, combined with Jazz improvisations. It comprises of zither and harmonica player Grzegorz TomaszewskiFind albums by this artist, saxophonist / flautist Michal KulentyFind albums by this artist, vibraphonist Karol SzymanowskiFind albums by this artist and bassist Krzysztof SamelaFind albums by this artist. They are joined by four guest musicians: vocalist Zbigniew ZaranekFind albums by this artist, knee fiddle player Maria PomianowskaFind albums by this artist, accordionist Lukasz MirekFind albums by this artist and percussionist Julia RauhutFind albums by this artist. Together they perform six traditional tunes / songs arranged in a Jazz-World Fusion fashion.
The music is a well rounded, melodic, straightforward mainstream Jazz combined (gently) with the folkloristic themes. Everything is well performed and there are plenty of nice solos by the participants. The vocal parts are also quite excellent. Generally this is a very pleasant listen and although the song´s lyrics are in Polish, the album should be accessible to most Jazz-World Fusion fans.
On the other hand this album is not really very ambitious or innovating, and therefore does not belong to the list of groundbreaking Polish Jazz albums amalgamating Polish Folklore, which have been recorded on the local scene since the 1960s and are still being created today, some of which were released by For TuneFind albums on this label Records. Overall this album is worth checking out for people who appreciate the diversity of the Polish Jazz scene.

This is the debut album by Polish Fusion guitarist Michal LewartowiczFind albums by this artist recorded with his quartet, which also includes keyboardist Rafal CzarnackiFind albums by this artist, bassist Jaroslaw ZarnowskiFind albums by this artist and drummer Pawel NowakFind albums by this artist. Saxophonist Adam WendtFind albums by this artist guests on five tracks. The album presents eight original compositions, all by Lewartowicz.
The music is typical Fusion, based on solid, very melodic compositions, full of catchy riffs, well put together and not less impressive than any music of this kind made across the pond in the last four decades or so.
These young musicians know their stuff and are able to express the Fusion Groove like clockwork. Lewartowicz is familiar with all the tricks of the trade and has all the sound gadgets one would expect to be in his arsenal. The rest of the quartet follows suit and veteran Wendt shows that his chops are completely up to date.
Overall this is a perfect Fusion album, that fans of the idiom will love to bits for sure. The music is catchy, the playing impressive and professional, and it is fun to listen to. It is definitely a solid debut album, reflecting the inspirations that guided Lewartowicz so far.
One can only hope that now, once Lewartowicz proved his abilities, his future projects will move forward towards more ambitious territories, since honestly Fusion has not moved an inch since it was first invented a very long time ago.

  | JACEK MIELCAREK KWARTET BASMYT ~ CORAZ AUDIO CAVE 2023/015 (Barcode: 5908298549766) ~ POLAND ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 2023 Released: 2023
This is an album by Polish Jazz saxophonist / clarinetists / composer Jacek MielcarekFind albums by this artist, recorded in a quartet setting with guitarist Marek KadzielaFind albums by this artist, bassist Jakub MielcarekFind albums by this artist (Jacek’s son) and drummer Lukasz StworzewiczFind albums by this artist. Vocalist Emilia HamerlikFind albums by this artist guests on one track. The album presents eight tracks, two composed by Jacek Mielcarek, one each by Jakub Mielcarek, Marzena MielcarekFind albums by this artist (Jacek’s wife) and Kadziela, two co-composed by the quartet and one is a standard.
The music floats between Freely Improvised and more conventional Jazz vistas, beautifully played by Jacek Mielcarek and his cohorts, displaying strong spiritual trends, mysticism and contemplative moods, similar to his earlier recordings. Despite the high degree of freedom, the music remains completely cohesive and coherent, which of course is remarkable in itself.
The fact that the compositions are contributed by several musicians adds to the diversity and scope of the music. Kadziela’s dense guitar passages and his utilization of electronically generated sounds also expand the range of the sonority and the rhythm section is hardly keeping time in the traditional sense, adding active tempo / rhythmic improvisation on top or perhaps just under everything else.
The arrangement of the classic standard is one of the highlights of the album, demonstrating a perfect merger of tradition and innovation, all with sympathy and respect to the past put looking forward for new forms of expression.
Overall, this is a wonderful example of Improvised Music, which makes sense, is reasonably easy to listen to, offers a balanced portion of high energy and tranquility, in short being a highly absorbing and fascinating listening experience, which continues previous achievements by Jacek Mielcarek and his favorite team of musical Argonauts. As usual I had a wonderful time listening to this music as should all open-minded listeners the world over.

  | PARKER / TRZASKA / EDWARDS / SANDERS ~ CITY FALL FSR 2016/04 (Barcode: 5905279364097) ~ POLAND ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 2014 Released: 2016
This is a live recording by a Free Jazz / Improvising Music quartet, which comprises of three British musicians: legendary saxophonist Evan ParkerFind albums by this artist, bassist John EdwardsFind albums by this artist and drummer Mark SandersFind albums by this artist and Polish saxophonist / clarinetist Mikolaj TrzaskaFind albums by this artist. The quartet performs just three lengthy improvisations, the first of which resides on the first CD and the other two reside on the second CD of this 2CD set. All music is credited, as appropriate in such circumstances, to all four members of the quartet. The music was recorded during a concert in London´s Café OTO.
Anybody familiar with the British Free Jazz scene will recognize the names of the British musicians as top representative of the genre and the same applies of course of people familiar with the parallel Polish scene, where Trzaska is considered as a unique phenomenon not only as Free Jazz player / leader but also as one of the most important contemporary composers of cinematic music.
The music captured on this album testifies as to the immediate rapport between the players, especially so between Evans (born 1944) and Trzaska (born 1966), who keep exchanging licks, phrases and vast amounts of energy between them for the entire duration of the concert, which often sounds superhuman in its intensity. The age difference seems to be completely inconsequential, which of course does not surprise me at all as my pairing of Trzaska with the Israeli clarinetist Harold RubinFind albums by this artist (born 1932) was similarly successful. In fact the saxophone duets, performed without the rhythm section, are some of the most fascinating moments on this album and I´d love to hear more of those.
As far as live albums of Free Jazz / Improvised Music are concerned, my opinion usually is that the music was primarily intended for those people who attended the concert and in recorded form the music loses most of its authenticity, energy and spirit, and becomes significantly less relevant. This album is one of the relatively few exceptions, probably due to the class of the musicians involved and the comradeship between them, and as a result hearing the music in recorded form is still very emotionally involving and aesthetically pleasing.
Of course this music is strictly for connoisseurs of this specific idiom and people who seek entertainment in their musical escapades should avoid this music at all cost. Those brave hearted few who enjoy the organized madness should have a most wonderful time while this music lasts, especially since meetings like these are usually a one time only events. Strong stuff!

The first three musicians in the lineup are of course associated with the Canterbury scene, mostly on the Free Jazz and Improvised Music side of the genre. Maguire wrote most of the music for this session, with Dean co-composing one track. The music is, as always in the case of such great musicians, a brilliant display of both individual virtuosity and group improvisation, which need little introduction to connoisseurs of the genre. In view of Dean´s death, this is one of the latest studio sessions he played on and therefore a treasure. Not to be missed!

  | HOWARD RILEY ~ ANGLE / THE DAY WILL COME HUX 141 (Barcode: 682970001418) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1968 - 1970 Released: 2014
This is a reissue of the second and third albums by British Jazz pianist / composer Howard RileyFind albums by this artist, both recorded in a trio format with bassist Barry GuyFind albums by this artist and drummer Alan JacksonFind albums by this artist. Saxophonist / flautist Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist plays on one track of the debut album, which presents eight original compositions, all by Riley. The second album presents twelve original compositions, six each by Riley and Guy. These two albums were originally released in 1969 and 1970 respectively, by CBSFind albums on this label (the European branch of ColumbiaFind albums on this label). This reissue is in fact a reissue of the 1999 remastered editions of these two albums, which disappeared from the market immediately following their release.
Together with these two albums, CBS, initially under the Realm Jazz moniker and later just as CBS, released also several albums by other British Jazz musicians such as the first two albums by drummer / composer Tony OxleyFind albums by this artist, the first three albums by guitarist Ray RussellFind albums by this artist and debut albums by vibraphonist Frank RicottiFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Elton DeanFind albums by this artist, as well as albums by groups like Rock WorkshopFind albums by this artist, Soft MachineFind albums by this artist and others. All these are exceptional examples of completely non commercial / highly artistic music released by a Major record label, a phenomenon which reflected the spirit of that particular era and lasted for a very brief period of time, sadly never to be repeated again
By the time this music was recorded, i.e. by the late 1960s, British Jazz underwent a dramatic transformation, a quantum leap no less, from imitation to innovation. After copying the American Jazz tradition for decades, the post WWII generation rebelled and rapidly found its own methods of expression, embracing such diverse influences as contemporary European Classical music, World-Music and Rock and amalgamating them into a new identity, which would become first modern British Jazz and soon after copied all over Europe, including even the countries behind the Iron Curtain, modern European Jazz. In the aftermath of these remarkable events British Jazz scene was encompassing a diverse rage of stylistic alternatives, from Jazz-Rock and Jazz-World Fusions, via modern mainstream to a whole range of alternative / Avant-Garde experimentation including Free Jazz and Improvised Music.
It takes just a brief moment into the first album to realize that Riley belongs to the Avant-Garde oriented group of British musicians, who value freedom of expression and individuality more than convention and acceptance. Even on these two early albums he is already well advanced in his experimentation, keeping melody only as an entry point to his music, which is entirely based on the dialogue (or in this case trialogue) and collective improvisation, rather than on following the chord progressions of standards and keeping regular time signatures. Guy, who was just over twenty years old when this music was recorded, proves to be an ideal partner, a born adventurer and complete nonconformist. His bass playing on these two albums is an encyclopedic textbook of improvised music moves for fellow bassists, developed completely spontaneously and subconsciously. But it is Jackson, who is the biggest surprise on these albums, considering his almost entirely conventional background before these sessions as one of Britain´s most sought after modern mainstream drummers. His wonderful integration with Riley and Guy here is simply sensational and a superb proof of his open-mindedness and musicality.
In the years that followed these sessions Riley would record many more wonderful albums in many different settings, but these two albums would always symbolize his individuality and prophetic vision. The early signs of his exceptional abilities, which were about to push the boundaries of music and contribute to its development, influencing generations of players, are clearly evident herein, turning these albums into instant classics.
The most startling realization one is faced with, while listening to these two albums, is the fact that not only the music did not age or lost any of its relevance, but it still is right there on the forefront of the musical Art Form, exactly where it was almost fifty years ago. These iconic recordings have earned their position in the Pantheon of British Jazz right from the moment they were recorded, and their unavailability during most of the time that passed since was a crime against culture, somewhat repented by this current reissue.

This is an archival album, which presents recordings by the brilliant British Jazz pianist / composer Howard RileyFind albums by this artist, recorded with his trio with bassist Barry GuyFind albums by this artist and drummers Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist or Alan JacksonFind albums by this artist. The album presents thirteen tracks, five with the trio with Hiseman recorded in 1968 and eight with the trio with Jackson recorded between 1969 and 1970. Most of the material was composed by Riley or Guy, but there are also a couple of standards and one tune by Annette PeacockFind albums by this artist. The material originates from the first three albums by the trio: “DiscussionsFind albums with this title”, “AngleFind albums with this title” and “The Day Will ComeFind albums with this title”, all essential British Jazz recordings.
Riley is by far my favorite British Jazz Avant-Gardist, and his extensive recorded legacy is one of the pillars of the genre. He is mostly known for his work in the classic Jazz piano trio format, like the two trios preset here and the later trio with Guy and Tony OxleyFind albums by this artist. But he recorded in other ensembles with the crème de la crème of the British scene over the years and practically all his albums are instant classics. Sadly, my impression is that he never received the proper recognition as one of the Godfathers of the genre and many of his albums are almost completely unknown.
For me, Riley is one of the most remarkable Jazz Artists, blessed by a remarkable ability to think out of the box. Although that specific quality should be integral to all Free Jazz / Improvised Music / Avant-Gardists, in fact is rather a rare quality, and many musicians belonging to these genres repeat patterns rather than inventing them. From the very early days of his career, like on these sessions, Riley’s approach to improvising was completely innovative and unlike anything / anybody else. His playing, completely Free on one hand, is also superbly melodic, on the other, despite how far he moves away from the source / original melody. This is particularly easy to spot in his interpretations of standards, but even more fascination while playing his original compositions.
This album is a wonderful document, especially in view of the fact that this music is previously unreleased and offers a superb addition / extension to the three a.m. studio albums by Riley, which are of course also timeless gems. Although reissued, they are not easy to find, and absolutely worth the effort.
Overall, this is an absolute must for every British Jazz lover and Avant-Garde Jazz enthusiast, anywhere on this planet. It offers some of the cleverest, most sophisticated and aesthetically satisfying music, which lost nothing of its power and zetz over time, and is still a stunning listening experience!

  | HOWARD RILEY ~ DISCUSSIONS DUSK FIRE 114 (Barcode: 5065001032257) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1967 Released: 2015
This is a reissue of the debut album by the seminal British Jazz pianist / composer Howard RileyFind albums by this artist, recorded in a classic piano trio setting with two legendary British Jazz icons: bassist Barry GuyFind albums by this artist and drummer Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist. The original album released in 1968 on the tiny OpportunityFind albums on this label label owned by producer Chris WellandFind albums by this artist had only 99 copies pressed and soon after became a highly sought-after collector´s item. It was reissued semi-legally on CD in 2007 but this is the first proper reissue of this album, which is newly remastered and includes two bonus tracks with previously unreleased recordings by another Howard Riley trio, recorded seven years prior to this album being recorded. The original album presents eight tracks, some of which are originals by Riley and others are the trio´s interpretations of standards, but only keen Jazz connoisseurs will be able to recognize them as such.
Riley´s arrival in London in 1967 placed him right at the epicenter of the burgeoning British Jazz scene, which was already developing rapidly since several years. His unusual approach to music, both as a performer and a composer, perfectly suited the "age of change" British Jazz was undergoing at the time, while emancipating itself from a decades-long association with American Jazz, while mostly copying the patterns developed across the pond. A new generation of young British Jazz musicians, Riley amongst them, decided to take matters into their own hands and move along, leaving the American Jazz tradition far behind.
Listening to this music almost half a Century after it was recorded clearly shows how European Jazz was about to find its own Avant-Garde, almost unrelated to the American Free Jazz, which more or less completely came to a hold with the death of John Coltrane. The European approach was not based on intense improvisation, which slowly stripped away all melodic content, but on a search which would amalgamate Jazz and contemporary European Classical music 20th Century innovations into a new idiom.
The performance of this trio clearly shows what collective improvisation is all about with the musicians behaving as a one three headed body, being in sync rhythmically and mentally at all times. Hiseman, who was about soon after to immerse into Jazz-Rock for the rest of his life, plays here without inhibitions and shows his incredible versatility. Guy sounds on this album as if he played Free Jazz for decades, obviously finding his natural element, which he never left to this day. His virtuosity and inventiveness at such early age (he was 20 years old at the time) is simply phenomenal.
In retrospect this is one of the iconic British Jazz recordings, which should be a part of a decent music collection by every British Jazz enthusiast. The fact that this music is available again is nothing short of a miracle. Good job Peter MuirFind albums by this artist, chapeau!

  | HOWARD RILEY ~ DISCUSSIONS JAZZPRINT 137 (Barcode: 604388682720) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1967 Released: 2007
This debut recording by the legendary UK pianist Howard RileyFind albums by this artist was initially released 40 years ago on a tiny label (OpportunityFind albums on this label, owned by producer Chris WellardFind albums by this artist) and has been unavailable for ages, making it a super-rare collector’s item. Riley has been spearheading the UK free jazz scene since the mid-1960, recording regularly over the years and serving as a beacon of musical enlightenment and vision. His exceptional talents as a pianist and composer are truly unrivaled, with the possible exception of his peer Keith TippettFind albums by this artist.
On this album Riley is accompanied by the brilliant bassist Barry GuyFind albums by this artist (Spontaneous Music EnsembleFind albums by this artist (SME)), another prominent figure on the UK free jazz scene, who recorded with Riley’s trio on more than one occasion. The person behind the drums is probably the greatest surprise to the visitors of this site, as it is no other than Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist - future leader of ColosseumFind albums by this artist, TempestFind albums by this artist and United Jazz + Rock EnsembleFind albums by this artist (Hiseman’s early jazz career is much lesser know).
The trio performs a set consisting of several Riley’s original compositions and a few standards – these well disguised as appropriate for a free jazz setting. Some clearly melodic elements are still present on these tracks, as the adventurous full-blown Avant-Garde was yet to come, but this is a classic of the genre in every sense. The interplay between the three master musicians is phenomenal and considering their tender age (at the time of this recording) this is a monster achievement. Absolutely essential for all free jazz lovers, especially for connoisseurs of the UK branch of the genre.

  | HOWARD RILEY ~ DUALITY JAZZPRINT 113 (Barcode: 604388474424) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1981 Released: 2002
This solo piano recording by the legendary UK pianist Howard RileyFind albums by this artist is one of the cornerstones of his illustrious career, as it crystallizes his approach to improvised music. The duality (as referred to in the album’s title) applies to two quite different avenues the artist travels when he performs his music. The first (as demonstrated by the first track on this album, which is over 20 minutes long) symbolizes the process of spontaneous composition / improvisation, based on some basic preconceived musical ideas, which get developed in the process of free-form improvisation. This type of music making requires a high degree of control of the instrument (something that Riley possesses without a doubt) and an incredible flow of musical ideas transferred instantaneously to the artist’s hands and from there to the piano. The other (as demonstrated by the rest of the tracks on this album) symbolizes more the composer rather than the virtuoso performer, with much shorter pieces, also brilliantly performed, each devoted to a different harmonic / rhythmic idea. In spite of this duality, the album flows beautifully from one piece of music to another, casting a musical spell of rare quality over the attentive listener. As with all demanding music, the more difficult it is the more pleasurable it becomes once the listener submits himself to its charms. Absolutely essential for all free jazz lovers, especially for connoisseurs of the UK branch of the genre.

  | HOWARD RILEY ~ FLIGHT FMR 026 (Barcode: 786497181124) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1971 Released: 1995
British pianist / composer Howard RileyFind albums by this artist has been a pivotal figure of the modern British Jazz and later Improvised Music since the late 1960s. Completely unorthodox and original, his approach to music making is a complete innovative universe, in which he and some of his close collaborators created the next plane in the history of Jazz in particular and music in general. Although the European Avant-Garde exploded a few years later then the first wave of US Free Jazz pioneers like Ornette ColemanFind albums by this artist, Albert AylerFind albums by this artist, Eric DolphyFind albums by this artist and John ColtraneFind albums by this artist, it developed in a new direction rather than copying or following the path initiated by the US giants. As radical as the US Free Jazz might have appeared at the time, it was after all deeply rooted in the Jazz tradition and in many respects developed as an extension of Bebop.
The Europeans, most of them in their twenties when they initiated the European Free Improvisation school, had little, if any, experience playing Bebop and the new direction was developed spontaneously rather than consciously (or sub consciously). The social upheaval and general anti-establishment wave that swept Europe in the late 1960s might have served as a psychological background for these musical developments, as the quest for freedom of expression and rebellion against established musical forms was the central motif of the European Free Improvisation movement. Young European musicians in Britain, Germany, France, Netherlands and even behind the Iron Curtain (Poland, East Germany) decided to take a bold step towards exploration of a new musical universe, unbound by any preconceptions and limitations - harmonic, rhythmic or otherwise.
The movement started in the late 1960s but only truly crystallized by the early 1970s, and this album is certainly one of the first focal point of European Free Improvisation. It was Riley’s fourth solo album following his daring debut DiscussionsFind albums with this title from 1967 and two trio albums recorded for CBSFind albums on this label (AngleFind albums with this title & The Day Will ComeFind albums with this title). Exceptionally gifted bassist Barry GuyFind albums by this artist, who was a member of Riley’s trio from the very beginning, took part in all the recordings, and would be his partner for many years to come. However, the decisive factor and the catalyst, which turned this recording into a momentous leap forward was the participation of one of Europe’s most inventive and original drummers – Tony OxleyFind albums by this artist. The resulting trio – Riley / Guy / Oxley – turned out to be an unstoppable musical hurricane of exploration and spontaneous invention beyond anything previously encountered.
The album starts with a furious barrage of a 20 minutes long collective improvisation, which moves between trio, duo and solo performances of immense intensity and complexity. Some incredible sounds are extracted from the respective instruments, creating an incredible collage of sonic expressions. In complete contrast, the second part of the album is a complete anti-climax, with the trio performing some contemplative music, quiet and delicate and at times almost lyrical, as on the two ballads. Make no mistakes here – this is not a return to mainstream Jazz. These quiet pieces are as free and improvised as they come, but the fury of expression is subdued here and replaced by the balance between sound and silence, interplay and caressing the instruments. Overall this is a monster album, revolutionary, innovative and groundbreaking.
Released originally on the legendary TurtleFind albums on this label label, this reissue finally brings this musical treasure back to life, for all the people who never had the opportunity to hear it at the time. Although Riley would prove to be very prolific and record many exceptional albums in the future, this one is especially dear to my heart, as it opened windows nobody previously knew existed. A musical Magnum Opus, beyond essential!

British pianist / composer Howard RileyFind albums by this artist is one of the most notable precursors of the Free Jazz and Improvised Music, not only in his country, but worldwide. His visionary approach to composing and performing has been a beacon for musicians trying to expand the horizons of the musical world, as we know it, for almost five decades now. This album is a most welcome reissue of a solo piano album dating from the early 1980s, which has been unavailable for much to long. At the time of this recording Riley has already reached a maturity and self-determination, after playing and composing for 25 years, always on edge of the established musical rules, moving outwards. The five pieces are a stellar example of Riley´s extraordinary technique, dynamics and creative thinking. Lovers of his music (sadly few in numbers) and connoisseurs of Improvised Music, will of course cherish this piece of Art, as much as I do.

  | HOWARD RILEY ~ LISTEN TO HEAR SLAM 2106 (Barcode: 5028386706724) ~ UK ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 2017 Released: 2017
This is a solo piano album by the British Jazz pianist / composer Howard RileyFind albums by this artist. It presents nineteen relatively short pieces, all but two composed by Riley, with the last two being two takes on the same standard.
Riley aged 80 is now in his seventh decade of activity, being a living legend as far as British Avant-Garde / Free Jazz / Improvised Music are concerned, with dozens of albums to his credit, including some of the most iconic recording of these genres in the late 1960s / early 1970s. But he continued to record wonderful music throughout the years and I have always considered him as one of my favorite British Jazz musicians, even if his music always involves intellectual effort and patience, not to mention open-mindedness. This quite recent recording marks (almost) the 50th Anniversary of his debut album.
Solo piano albums are the ultimate challenge for Jazz pianists, and most pianists avoid recording solo or do so reluctantly. Riley, however, loves the solo piano idiom and his recorded legacy offers quite a few of solo piano recordings, each of them being a superb document of his immense talent. Perhaps the immediate vis–a-vis with the piano allows him the perfect opportunity to express himself without inhibitions and limitations. Whatever the reason might be, his solo piano recordings are all absolute gems.
Despite the fact that Riley plays Free Jazz / Improvised Music, his expressionism always strikes me as completely melodic, as absurd as this might sound. The short melodic sequences and chord progressions in his performances are always (at least for me) absolutely logical and coherent. As a result, even if his music might be considered as difficult, it is never alienating or cacophonic, as often can be the case with Improvised Music.
Overall, this is a wonderful album of Free spirited, but exquisitely performed music, which strikes directly into the heart and soul of the listener, if only allowed to do so. The album’s title describes perfectly its contents, as Riley is literally creating note after note, like a painter or sculptor might do, when creating his Art. Wholeheartedly recommended!

The album’s title describes perfectly its contents, as Riley is literally creating note after note, like a painter or sculptor might do, when creating his Art. Wholeheartedly recommended!

  | HOWARD RILEY ~ SYNOPSIS EMANEM 4044 (Barcode: 5030243404421) ~ UK ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 1973 Released: 2000
This is a reissue of the 5th album by British pianist / composer Howard RileyFind albums by this artist, recorded in a trio format with bassist Barry GuyFind albums by this artist and drummer Tony OxleyFind albums by this artist. The album was originally released on the IncusFind albums on this label label, and this reissue presents the entire session with five tracks, as opposed to the original four tracks album. All the music was composed by Riley.
By the time this album was recorded, Riley was already recognized as one of the core members of the young British Avant-Garde, which took the scene by a storm, often vehemently opposed by the British Jazz “establishment”, which included traditional / mainstream musicians and most of the Jazz press. But of course the new music was hardly bothered by anybody’s opinion and exploded rapidly, defining a new Jazz aesthetic, inspired, but completely independent from the American Free Jazz scene, and effectively much closer conceptually to what was happening in Europe at the time on both sides of the Iron Curtain.
Spearheaded both by musicians and activist (i.e. club owners, small independent record labels and “radical” journalist), the British Jazz Avant-Garde in the 1970s wrote one of the most glorious chapters in the history of British Jazz, and this album is one of numerous examples of what was happening then, and the three musicians taking part in this recording are key figures of that movement; Riley with his trios, Guy with his London Jazz Composers OrchestraFind albums by this artist and Oxley with his quintets an sextets. The collection of the albums recorded by these musicians alone, recorded between late 1960s and mid-1970s is an overwhelming body of exceptional, revolutionary and often prophetic music.
Overall, this is a brilliant example of the British Free Jazz / Improvised Music classic period, which lost nothing of its power and striking, innovative out-of-the-box thinking, which became in time an archetypal specimen of the genre. For British Jazz lovers, who include the Avant-Garde milieu in their favorite pleasures, this is an absolute must of course.

  | HOWARD RILEY / JAKI BYARD ~ R&B SLAM 2100 (Barcode: 5028386633228) ~ UK ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 1985 Released: 2015
This is a live recording from 1985 of the Jazz piano duo comprising of British Jazz pianist / composer Howard RileyFind albums by this artist and American pianist / multi-instrumentalist / composer Jaki ByardFind albums by this artist. It is the second of two such duo meetings between the two wonderful musicians, which followed a similar one captured on record a year earlier. The album presents just five lengthy tracks, one being a medley of two compositions. Four of these compositions are standards and two are co-composed improvisations by Riley and Byard. On the last rack Byard plays piano and saxophone simultaneously.
It is almost impossible to imagine a meeting of two seemingly more contrasting Jazz personalities than these two, with Byard mostly associated with his affinity to Ragtime, Stride and other early Jazz sub-genres and Riley mostly associated with Free Jazz and Improvised Music, and yet, as this beautiful album shows, their work together is absolutely harmonious and coherent. Of course Bayard also had his lesser known Avant-Garde / Free Jazz associations, which come here to full bloom.
The music moves stylistically throughout the entire history of Jazz music, spanning a Century, and the transformations between what sounds like two Scott JoplinFind albums by this artist spirts and two Cecil TaylorFind albums by this artist spirits playing together is absolutely astounding. For Jazz listeners, who are astute connoisseurs of the Jazz history, especially piano Jazz, this is a true revelation.
Overall, this is a brilliant document of the telepathic communication between two great musicians and a sublime example of the “Art of the Duo” phenomenon, which is an essential listening for all Jazz lovers out there. The live concert is very well recorded, which of course makes listening to this album a true pleasure on the sonic plane as well. Wholeheartedly recommended!

  | HOWARD RILEY / MARIO CASTRONARI / TONY MARSH ~ WISHING ON THE MOON FMR 014 ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1993 Released: 1995
British pianist / composer Howard RileyFind albums by this artist is primarily known for his numerous improvised solo piano recordings and duets with fellow improvisers, like Keith TippettFind albums by this artist. As one of the greatest pioneers of British / European Improvised Music, he achieved in time a legendary status among his peers and fans alike. In contrast to his solo / duo recording, Riley’s piano trio albums are often reflections of his more lyrical and gentle side, bringing up his Jazz roots. This delightful album is no exception. Supported by two superb musicians, bassist Mario CastronariFind albums by this artist and drummer Tony MarshFind albums by this artist, Riley delivers, what might appear as an almost “conventional” Jazz album. Of course there is nothing conventional about his exceptional improvisational ability or the performances by all three musicians, but the overall effect of the album is more acceptable to a listener, who might find it difficult to face Riley’s “usual” output. Of course some of the pieces on this album are freely improvised and others are melodic, but the album’s immediate “appeal” is magical. This is a great example of masterly performed music, which escapes classification and goes directly to one’s heart. Most warmly recommended, especially to listeners who are not familiar with this great musician and could use this album as an entry point to discover a new world of music.

  | HOWARD RILEY / ELTON DEAN ~ ONE TO ONE SLAM 234 (Barcode: 5028386023425) ~ UK ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 1993 - 1999 Released: 1999
This is an album by the British Jazz duo of pianist / composer Howard RileyFind albums by this artist and saxophonist / composer Elton DeanFind albums by this artist, one of several recordings the two great musicians made together. The album presents eight tracks, all recorded live, which originate from two performances captured six years apart. Five of the tracks are co-credited to the two musicians, two are their interpretations of music composed by other Jazz greats and one is their take on a standard.
The music is very intensive, partly based on melodic themes but largely improvised, with was the usual modus operandi of this duo, when working together. Both musicians cooperated for many years and offers a very tight rapport, which is beautifully portrayed herein.
Dean, who is mostly known for his work as a member of Soft MachineFind albums by this artist and other Canterbury scene ensembles, was in parallel involved with the Improvised Music / Free Jazz scene, which naturally is significantly less popular and widely known. His death in 2006 robbed the British Jazz scene not only of one of its greatest musicians, but also a kind and much loved human being.
Overall, this album is an important document of the British Free Jazz / Improvised Music scene in the 1990s, with a superb “Art of the Duo” performances by two brilliant musicians, who took no prisoners in their total approach to the music, and stayed faithful to their aesthetics, disregarding the musical fads and fashions, which came and went over the years.

  | HOWARD RILEY / KEITH TIPPETT ~ INTERCHANGE JAZZPRINT 109 (Barcode: 604388474028) ~ UK ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 1993 Released: 2001
This is a wonderful album by the British Jazz duo of Avant-Garde pianists Howard RileyFind albums by this artist and Keith TippettFind albums by this artist. It presents a live concert recorded in Bern by the Swiss Radio, which is a continuous spontaneous improvisation lasting for almost an hour and not split into separate tracks, but appearing here as the only track of the CD.
This is the third recording in a duo format by these two Master musicians, following the "First EncounterFind albums with this title" (recorded 1981) and "In FocusFind albums with this title" (recorded 1984) and as usual offers some dazzling performances. Completely unrehearsed, the music sounds as if played by one four handed being, with a level of telepathic communication between the two pianists which is mind bugling.
Improvised Music can present quite a challenge to the listener, much more so in recorded form than being experienced live, where the direct contact between the artists and the audience is presents and becomes a part of the entire experience. This album, although being incredibly rich and complex, is one of the most accessible of its kind, and can be enjoyed probably by people who had no previous or very little Avant-Garde encounters.
Personally I find this album to be one of my favorite recordings by both Riley and Tippett, and although I have very many of their recordings, I find myself returning to this one more often than most of the others. But of course everything these two Magicians recorded over the years is absolutely worth being discovered and kept on the shelf for easy access.
Most warmly recommended and although not easily found these days, definitely worth the effort of hunting for a copy – satisfaction guaranteed!

  | HOWARD RILEY / KEITH TIPPETT ~ THE BERN CONCERT FMR 008 (Barcode: 786497263721) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1993 Released: 1994
British pianists / composers Howard RileyFind albums by this artist and Keith TippettFind albums by this artist have both been on the forefront of the Avant-Garde musical scene since the 1960s, recording and performing some of the most daring and advanced music originating in Europe. Although each one of them creates quite a different musical universe, they found time and inclination to cooperate as a duo since many years and recorded several albums together. This live performance in Switzerland is considered both by themselves and their fans as a peak of their musical cooperation and constitutes a sublime document of Improvised Music. The sheer power and endless possibilities available by two grand pianos facing each other are simply staggering. The music is all spontaneous and unrehearsed, but it sounds as if these two marvelous musicians played with each other constantly. The ability to listen to each other and complement each other musically is omnipresent here, creating a total that surpasses by far the sum of the ingredients. Listening to the music and moving between delicate and quiet passages to stormy explosions is a journey every music lover should undertake at some stage. The level of interplay and mutual respect these two musicians hold for each other is truly admirable. All that is left for us to do is to float on the wings of this music and let it take us to uncharted territories, having a ride of our life. Superb!

  | OFIR SHWARTZ ~ EARLIER IN TIME NOT ON LABEL (Barcode: 797734644296) ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz Recorded: 2009 Released: 2010
Debut album by Israeli Jazz pianist / composer Ofir ShwartzFind albums by this artist and his trio with bassist Amitai LadinFind albums by this artist and drummer Elad AizikowitzFind albums by this artist, recorded after they played together for about three years. I found listening to this album a heartwarming experience for several reasons; the fact that the piano trio is my favorite Jazz trip is already well known to my fiends and foes alike, but the fact that three young Israeli musicians are capable of playing with such elegance, eloquence and maturity is truly astounding. Combined with the depth of the pianist´s compositions (all the music on this album, except one track, was composed by him), which are mostly lyrical and introvert, the overall impression is deeply moving. The music is much closer to European Jazz than to its American roots, reminiscent of Nordic and East European schools of Jazz composition. Mostly quite precise and well organized; the music sometimes glides into freely improvised passages, which albeit being brief, put it in an entirely new context. The rhythm section gives a perfectly solid support to the soloist, filling in the blanks and complimenting his performances without being intrusive. The interplay between the three musicians is perfectly balanced and respectful, which is a basis of every great piano trio. Shwartz isn´t trying to be overtly virtuosic in his performance, preferring subtlety and subtext to flashy, but meaningless glissandos and arpeggios. Every keystroke is precisely where it belongs, both musically and rhythmically, which is of course the way good music is supposed to be. Beautifully recorded, with a clear and warm resonance and perfect sonic balance between the instruments, this is an album every Jazz connoisseur should enjoy in full. The fact that it comes from our petite country is definitely a source of pride and joy for people like me, who care about our culture. Wholeheartedly recommended!

  | OFIR SHWARTZ ~ SHADES OF FISH HEVHETIA 0075 (Barcode: 8588005257138) ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz Recorded: 2013 Released: 2013
This is the second album by Israeli Jazz pianist / composer Ofir ShwartzFind albums by this artist, recorded in a piano trio format with bassist Gal ShayaFind albums by this artist and Slovenian (resident in Israel) drummer Gasper BertonceljFind albums by this artist. It presents nine (one repeated twice) original compositions, all by Shwartz (and a short solo piano piece as a hidden bonus track).
The music consists mostly of melodic, lyrical ballads, which are Shwartz´s preferred modus operandi, but this album also introduces w few new elements in his music, like Rocky rhythms and "harder" approach in some of the tunes and certain moments of free improvised passages. Fortunately he is able to handle the different musical environments with ease and elegance. As a result most of the album is similar to the debut album, well within mainstream Jazz and melodic material and only parts venture into more ambitious territory.
The trio performance is excellent from start to finish and presents a very high level of interplay between the three individual musicians, who obviously treat each other with respect and sympathy. Shaya is a wonderful bass player, very expressive and melodic, able to carry a tune and cooperating fabulously with the piano. His tone and technique are both outstanding. Bertoncelj keeps a relatively low profile, as appropriate for a piano trio, but his presence is definitely felt at all times as part of the trialogue.
Overall this is a very impressive sophomore release, clearly pointing out the way towards establishing a career for Shwartz, which he builds up consistently and scrupulously. This album is a treat for piano trio lovers, with a few surprises therein, and deserves to be heard far and wide. It is also the first Israeli Jazz album released on the excellent Slovak HevhetiaFind albums on this label label, hopefully by far not the last. Warmly recommended!

  | SIMON, EDWARD ~ EDWARD SIMON KOKOPELLI 1305 ~ USA ~ Jazz
AMG Review: Edward Simon plays mostly restrained and introspective piano on this release that recalls Keith Jarrett while also hinting now and then at Simon´s Venezuelan heritage. Although tenor-saxophonist Mark Turner and percussionist Milton Cardona help out here and there, this is essentially a low-key trio date with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Adam Cruz in the Post-bop tradition of Bill Evans. Most of the tunes were contributed by Simon and only "Slippin´ & Slidin"´ and the tenor solo in "Teen´s Romance" (which is unfortunately faded out) generate much heat although the close interplay between the alert musicians and the consistent inner tension does hold on to one´s interest throughout.

  | ROD STEWART ~ THE ROD STEWART SESSIONS 1971-1998 WARNER BROS. 081227985387 (Barcode: 081227985387) ~ UK ~ Pop & Rock Recorded: 1971 - 1998
I have always had a soft spot for Rod StewartFind albums by this artist, ever since I´ve met him when he was the soloist of the legendary Jeff BeckFind albums by this artist group, before he moved on to front FacesFind albums by this artist. The two albums he recorded with Beck and his first two solo albums are still among my favorite Rock albums which I like to revisit from time to time. Stewart´s sensational career spanning more than five decades is an exceptional story of 20th Century music and he still manages to move his audiences now, past his 70th Birthday. Old Rockers die hard and he is one of those who keep the memory of past decades alive. When Stewart started to record the "Great American SongbookFind albums with this title" series, he was viscously ridiculed by "critics", especially those from Jazz circles, who considered his interpretation of standards to be a profanity. In truth Stewart sang these standards better than most contemporary American Jazz singers.
Stewart proved over time that he fits comfortably into a wide variety of formats and genres within the Rock and Pop idioms. His sensitivity to melody and his ability to play around with his voice are truly remarkable and basically unparalleled by any other vocalist. Therefore his position in Rock history is well deserved and fully justified.
This wonderful Box Set is an obvious labor of love, which happens only thanks to dedicated people, who are willing to spend endless hours and move mountains to do what they think is the right thing. In this case producer Andy ZaxFind albums by this artist, who listened for endless hours to the original recording tapes of the albums made by Stewart starting with his third album "Every Picture Tells A StoryFind albums with this title" from 1971 and right through the album "When We Were The New BoysFind albums with this title" from 1998, collecting all the unreleased material from these sessions and presenting them all here, 63 tracks spread over four CDs, all beautifully remastered.
Stewart sings his heart out all the way through, as he always does, with his beautiful and unique throaty voice never letting the listener down. Mind you these are outtakes, alternate takes and other material which is supposed to be of secondary quality and importance, but you would never guess this is the fact, as they are simply all classic Rod Stewart at his best.
The CDs are beautifully packaged in a digibook format with a great booklet describing the music track by track and including many photographs. Stewart´s fans will find this a must of course, as all this material is nowhere else to be found, but honestly this is great Rock music which all music connoisseurs should find interesting.

This is the thirty-second studio album by the iconic British vocalist / songwriter Rod StewartFind albums by this artist, recorded with a small team of his usual cohorts, which includes keyboardist Kevin SavigarFind albums by this artist, guitarist Emerson SwinfordFind albums by this artist, violinist J`anna JacobyFind albums by this artist, percussionist Julia ThorntonFind albums by this artist and several backing vocalists. The album presents twelve songs, nine of which were co-written by Stewart and Savigar (one also by Swinford) and three are arrangements of songs by other songwriters. The songs are connected into a continuous stream of sound without the usual pauses between them.
I first fell under the spell of Stewart’s idiosyncratic voice when I heard him fronting the Jeff BeckFind albums by this artist group in 1967 and this “love affair” is still very much on. His long and convoluted career produced many albums of various quality, but his vocals always were, and still are, completely amazing and lost nothing of their uniqueness and power, which is pretty astounding. Personally I most enjoy his early albums and The Great American Songbook series, but honestly Stewart never sung a wrong note in his life. He is a superb interpreter of songs written by other great songwriters, and in my book he stands proudly next to another British Rock icon, Joe CockerFind albums by this artist, both born only a few months apart.
This new album, created amidst the pandemic, is one of the best efforts of his late career. The songs are all solid and well written, especially the ballads, and are a true joy to listen to. On a few songs the contemporary arrangements are a tad artificial, and Stewart still sounds the best just accompanied by a piano, like on the title song. His heartbreaking balladry is still completely unappalled.
Overall, for an artist with six decades of musical legacy, Stewart still sounds as sweet and sour as he ever did and combined with the fine songs he sings here, this album is pure unadulterated musical delight. Hats off!

This joint effort was the culmination of their work together, which remains as one of the greatest European Jazz albums of all times. Warren composed all the music, which includes four shorter pieces and the extended five-part suite, which gives the album its title, all performed by a Big Band, comprising of the creme de la creme of British Jazz musicians at the time. It includes trumpeters Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist and Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist, sax players: Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist, Stan SultzmannFind albums by this artist, Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist, John Surman and John Warren, pianist John TaylorFind albums by this artist, bass players: Harry MillerFind albums by this artist and Barre PhillipsFind albums by this artist and drummers: Alan JacksonFind albums by this artist and Stu MartinFind albums by this artist (and other less known players). The compositions, arrangements, orchestration and performances are all stellar from start to finish and the overall quality of the music is completely outstanding and miles ahead of any competition. It is interesting to compare this album with any Big Band recording made at the same time in America and see that the Brits left their American counterparts aeons behind by that time. I have been harshly criticized many times (by Americans of course) for saying that although Americans invented Jazz, Europeans perfected it. Anybody listening to this album and still not admitting this to be true must be completely deaf. To me this is a perfect album, one of very few that deserves to be called “perfect” in every respect. Beyond essential!

The album presents nine tracks, eight of which were composed by Vesala and one was co-composed by him and Polish Jazz trumpeter Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist, with whom he cooperated for many years.
The music, although composed, is full of Avant-Garde elements, Free improvisation, all framed by remarkable close large ensemble work, kept tightly in check by Vesala’s ingenious drumming. Many different musical elements are amalgamated on this album, including Rock, Big Band licks and the Nordic melancholy, with the music floating between quiet meditative pieces and hard rocking crescendos.
Vesala was of course one of the Godfathers of Finnish Jazz and his interest in Improvised Music marked the earliest exploration of that genre on the local scene already in the 1960s. He was always very open to cooperation with other European Jazz musicians and recorded many albums with European ensembles, especially with the a.m. Stanko and other Polish, German and British musicians, and as such was an early icon of European Jazz.
Overall, this is a remarkable piece of Finnish / European Jazz, full of beautiful melodic lines and fascinating exploration of the Free idiom, which are perfectly balanced on this wonderful album. Wholeheartedly recommended for those young Jazz enthusiasts, who discovered Jazz after his tragically premature departure in 1999.

This is a reissue of the iconic debut album by the Godfather of modern Finnish Jazz drummer / composer / bandleader Edward VesalaFind albums by this artist and his trio with Finnish saxophonist Juhani AaltonenFind albums by this artist and Norwegian bassist Arild AndersenFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven original compositions, four by Aaltonen, one each by Vesala and Andersen and one co-composed by all three members of the trio. Finnish trumpeter Mike KoskinenFind albums by this artist, who was supposed to play on the album, fell ill and the recording went down in history as a trio affair.
This was the first ever Finnish Free Jazz album and except for the little known album "NykysuomalaistaFind albums with this title" (Contemporary Finnish) recorded a year earlier, on which Vesala and Aaltonen appeared only on the B side of the LP, this was the debut full album for both of them.
The music is typical of the early European Free Jazz wave, which exploded on both sides of the Iron Curtain by the late 1960s. Vesala enlisted Anderson (who was a few months younger than him) to play with the trio as Anderson had already gained experience playing Free Jazz with Don CherryFind albums by this artist and others. The cooperation proved to be of crucial importance for Vesala, as it led to him being introduced to Norwegian saxophonist Jan GarbarekFind albums by this artist. He recorded five more albums for ECM and also participated on albums by Polish trumpeter Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist released by the label.
In retrospect, the album is not only a highly important document of Finnish / European Jazz, but also a piece of music that still sounds vibrant and exciting, in spite of the fact that it was recorded five decades earlier.

Warleigh would become famous later for playing on album by the top Rock stars like Nick DrakeFind albums by this artist, Elton JohnFind albums by this artist, U2Find albums by this artist, Paul McCartneyFind albums by this artist and many more. The format chosen for this album was “Jazz & strings”, which suited Warleigh’s superbly clear and lyrical style perfectly. The chosen material (all standards) was beautifully arranged for a large string orchestra and a Jazz rhythm section, which included some of the best British Jazz players at the time, like Gordon BackFind albums by this artist on piano, Kenny NapperFind albums by this artist on bass and Terry CoxFind albums by this artist on drums. The resulting album is a stunning debut, beautifully executed by all the musicians involved, and showing Warleigh to be a world class player, who can improvise freely and yet always stay within the melodic line. Jazz & strings albums have a tendency to fall into the “land of saccharine” very easily, but fortunately this is well avoided here, producing a most enjoyable Jazz album full of integrity and showmanship. It’s great to have this forgotten gem back in circulation.

  | WARM TRIO ~ MOUSE PARADISE RG 107 (Barcode: 5902693143468) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 2020 Released: 2020
This is the second album by the Warm TrioFind albums by this artist, which comprises of Polish guitarist / composer Boguslaw RaatzFind albums by this artist, bassist Grzegorz KorybalskiFind albums by this artist and American drummer Calvin WestonFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine original compositions, including one bonus track that does not appear on the LP edition of this album. All the music was co-composed by the trio members, except one track which features American violinist Steve KindlerFind albums by this artist, who is also listed as co-composer.
The trio offers a phenomenal “power trio” Fusion, based on excellent melodic themes and superbly hard driven performance by all three musicians. The guitar is obviously fronting the line, with a sound every Hard Rock group would wish to call their own, but which these days hardly ever happens. The powerful rhythm section drives the music mercilessly forward, with a power of a nuclear submarine. The resulting wall of sound effect is simply overwhelming, in the best sense of course.
Overall, this is superb follow up to the debut album and a great piece of music for listeners who want their music loud and hard, but intelligent and diverse enough to keep them interested for the duration. Fusion on steroids and an absolute must to guitar lovers, who might need resuscitation along the way.

  | WARM TRIO ~ WARM TRIO RG 101 (Barcode: 20151010) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 2015 Released: 2015
This is an album by Dark Rock / Fusion group Warm TrioFind albums by this artist comprising of Polish guitarist / composer Boguslaw RaatzFind albums by this artist, bassist Grzegorz KorybalskiFind albums by this artist and American drummer Calvin WestonFind albums by this artist. The album presents eleven original instrumental compositions, nine of which were co-composed by the trio members and one each by Raatz and Weston.
The music moves between typical guitar power trios Heavy Rock riff oriented pieces and more Fusion oriented material, with extensive improvisations. The focus is obviously on the guitar pyrotechnics, which Raatz is a Master of, but there us also a lot of melodic contents and ambient atmosphere. The rhythm section supports the leader amicably and holds the pulse firmly, which is exactly what this kind of music needs.
In contrast to most recordings of this type, the music on this album is diverse enough to keep the listener interested over the entire span of the album, but it is undoubtedly very specific and will appeal to Rock fans who like their music heavy, loud and intense.
For guitar aficionados this album is a treasure chest of technical tips how to use the instrument to the max, without being excessive and boring. Definitely an ear opener!

  | WARSAW IMPROVISERS ORCHESTRA ~ CSW 14_03_2015 FSR 2016/08 (Barcode: 5905279364127) ~ POLAND ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 2015 Released: 2016
This is the debut album by Warsaw Improvisers OrchestraFind albums by this artist, a loose gathering of about fifty musicians living in or around Warsaw, twenty nine of which (I count thirty names) participate in this live recording, which resulted in three long freely improvised pieces. The orchestra was conducted on two of these pieces by British, resident in Warsaw, saxophonist Ray DickatyFind albums by this artist and on the third one by violinist Patryk ZakrockiFind albums by this artist, and the compositions are credited to all the participants.
The music is quite predictable, as similar attempts to create music by large improvising ensembles were already tried in the past many times. If fact the term "music" is principally applicable here only due to the fact that the participants are using musical instruments (or human voice), but otherwise does not describe what most people recognize as music. Improvised music is complex enough when created by an intimate solo / duo / trio format, but when attempted by such a large gathering, even when not all the musicians are plying at once, is simply too much.
However, listeners interested in sound experimentation and imaginary soundscapes would probably be able to listen to this album with interest. There are moments of tension and buildup, intense climaxes and long quiet passages, so there is at least dynamics and evolution, which defuses boredom. But ultimately this all does not add to a musical statement, as such. As much as I love experimentation, this particular album seems to be an attempt to create quality by quantity, which simply fails.
As usual in such cases, it was probably great fun to record this music and perhaps also listening to it while being recorded, but sadly after it was transferred to a piece of plastic, it lost all of its charm and wind. I can hardly imagine anybody listening to this at home more than once. Of course this is, as always, only me…

  | WARSAW STOMPERS ~ WARSAW STOMPERS (POLISH JAZZ VOL.01) MUZA 1001 (Barcode: 5907783420016) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 1959 - 1964 Released: 2008
This album presents a series of recordings made by the polish traditional Jazz ensemble Warsaw StompersFind albums by this artist (earlier called New Orleans StompersFind albums by this artist), which was one of the first and certainly the best of its kind. Led by the excellent trumpeter Henryk MajewskiFind albums by this artist and drummer Mieczyslaw WadeckiFind albums by this artist the ensemble changed the membership over the years and included in its ranks some of the best future Polish Jazz musicians like saxophonist Zbigniew NamyslowskiFind albums by this artist and keyboardist Wlodek GulgowskiFind albums by this artist.
The traditionalists vs. modernist Jazz War raged in Poland in the 1950s similarly to what happened all over Europe at the time with the New Orleans revival emerging as a counterforce of the new Bebop and beyond. However, beyond the heated discussions running into the wee hours of the night between the opponents, Jazz as music coexisted peacefully, resulting in outstanding results in both fields. The Warsaw Stompers played an all original programme, which is quite remarkable for the time, again emphasizing the deep involvement of the Polish scene with the Jazz tradition, which started even before the WWII.
The level of the compositions as well as the performance is truly stellar and anybody who loves traditional Jazz should be able to enjoy this music to the fullest. Highly recommended! Side Note: Although some Polish Jazz albums were recorded and released in Poland before this album, it marks the very beginning of the legendary Polish Jazz series, which over the years documented the development of the Polish scene and resulted in total 76 releases, which in retrospect include some of the best European Jazz recorded beyond the Iron Curtain. The Polish Jazz LPs and CDs are highly collectable and many fans all over the world try to complete the collection, which is not an easy task these days. The CD reissues (called Polish Jazz Deluxe) expanded the original series with some 20 additional titles, which somehow missed the original series at the time but belong to be a part of it in retrospect.

  | WANDA WARSKA ~ DOMOWE PIOSENKI POLSKIE RADIO 1984-1985 (Barcode: 5907812249847) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz & Poetry Recorded: 1964 - 2015 Released: 2016
This is a phenomenal collection of radio recordings by the iconic Polish Jazz vocalist Wanda WarskaFind albums by this artist, the wife of the Godfather of Polish Jazz, pianist / trumpeter / trombonist / composer / arranger / conductor / bandleader Andrzej KurylewiczFind albums by this artist. In retrospect, considering the criminally limited recorded legacy by Warska, in spite of her status and immense talent, she was perhaps overshadowed by the colossal figure of her husband and perhaps decided to support his career rather than develop her own. Whatever the reasons might have been, there is almost nothing available on the Polish music market that reflects her incredible artistry and this collection is a most welcome, albeit much belated, tribute to this Wonder Women!
This 2CD album presents thirty seven stunning songs, all of which have two things in common: Warska sings them all and she wrote the lyrics to all of them, unveiling a part of her creative nature less know to the public. As if this wasn´t impressive enough, she also composed twenty four of these songs. Those she did not composed are mostly by Brazilian composers: Antonio Carlos JobimFind albums by this artist, Vinicius de MoraesFind albums by this artist, Dorival CaymmiFind albums by this artist and Joao GilbertoFind albums by this artist, the Godfathers of Bossa Nova and modern Brazilian music (total nine songs). Warska started her career as a lyricist in 1964, when she translated into Polish the a/m Bossa Nova songs, which swept the Polish scene as they did all over the world at the time. The remaining four songs come from other sources and interestingly none of the songs on this album were composed by Kurylewicz.
These songs were recorded during a number of recording sessions as follows: one song was recorded in 1963, five songs were recorded in 1964, seven songs were recorded in 1966, one song was recorded in 1971 and seven songs were recorded in 1972; on all of the above twenty one songs Warska is accompanied by various ensembles led by Kurylewicz, lineups of which are unknown. Thirteen songs were recorded in 2002 and one in 2004 with a quartet which included Kurylewicz on piano, guitarist Marek NapiorkowskiFind albums by this artist, bassist Pawel PantaFind albums by this artist and drummer Cezary KonradFind albums by this artist. Two more songs were recorded in 2015 (after the passing of Kurylewicz in 2007) with a trio featuring pianist Andrzej JagodzinskiFind albums by this artist, Napiorkowski and Panta.
The songs composed by Warska are all pearls of the Polish Jazz & Poetry idiom, full of that heartbreaking lyricism, Slavic melancholy and beautiful melodies, that only Poles are capable of weaving. Warska´s interpretations of these songs are absolutely divine, although she was always the absolute Queen of Cool, playing around with her beautiful voice and using cleverly the idiosyncrasies of the Polish language and diction, but eschewing theatrics and drama. This perfect minimalism is her trademark, and sets her apart from all other Polish Jazz vocalists, regardless of their age.
In truth this album is a wonderful opportunity to compare Warska to her alter ego, the legendary Polish Jazz vocalist Ewa DemarczykFind albums by this artist, who also enjoys an iconic status based mostly on a very limited number of recordings done decades ago. Demarczyk and Warska are the two most important figures of the Polish Jazz vocal artistry, and they both remain unchallenged so far. Demarczyk, the absolute Drama Queen, is the devilish face of Polish Jazz vocals whereas Warska is the absolute angelic face of it. They compliment each other perfectly, like Yin & Yang and a prospect of seeing them both on one stage and / or the possibility of them making an album together gives me the Goosebumps.
As usual in such cases, the lyrical content of this album is sadly limited to those listeners who understand the Polish language, however I´m pretty sure that the beauty and the power of these songs is much stronger than language barriers and all sensitive listeners anywhere on this planet should be able to enjoy this album immensely.
As far as Polish Cultural Heritage is concerned, this is an absolute National Treasure, which deserves to be cherished and studied by young musicians in Poland, first and foremost by vocalists of course. For us, the humble admirers, this is an essential addition to our record collections, no questions asked. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

  | WARSZAWA KYIV EXPRESS ~ HUCULSKI BLUES VIVI SOUND 0002 (Barcode: 5901549609011) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-World Fusion Recorded: 2010 Released: 2011
This is the debut album by the Polish / Ukrainian Jazz-World Fusion ensemble Warszawa Kyiv ExpressFind albums by this artist, comprising of five Polish and one Ukrainian musicians, playing what they describe as a tribute to the musical traditions of Eastern Europe, which is a mixture of Polish, Ukrainian, Jewish, Gypsy and other influences. The ensemble is co-led by Polish pianist Piotr Karol SawickiFind albums by this artist and Ukrainian trumpeter Konstantyn DonskojFind albums by this artist, who are also credited for writing all the music on this album except for one track, which is a folk song with a Jazz arrangement. Although it´s obvious that these musicians can play, the entire concept just doesn´t work well for me. The connection between the folkloristic motifs and the Jazz arrangements sound completely artificial and simply dishonest. It seems this album was made to measure rather than a result of a spontaneous intellectual effort. My Polish friends tell me that this album was received enthusiastically by local Jazz critics and the public… well what can I say, except perhaps that the reasons for liking it rest outside the musical sphere (political perhaps, with some Poles still mourning the loss of the Eastern territories?) In view of the splendid Polish Jazz heritage as far as Ethno-Jazz is concerned, which goes back many years into the past, this album is dangerously close to being a fad, following the trends rather than an artistic truth. However, I can understand the fact that some people like this music, as it is after all well and skillfully played, and touches on many nostalgic notes, with very many pretty notes… Go figure…

  | NICO WEBER KWARTETT ~ ELA UNIT 5130 (Barcode: 7640222861305) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz Recorded: 2023 Released: 2024
This is the debut album by young German Jazz trumpeter / composer Nico WeberFind albums by this artist, recorded in a quartet setting with pianist Maxim BurtsevFind albums by this artist, bassist Jakob JagerFind albums by this artist and drummer Leo EbertFind albums by this artist. Saxophonist Florian TrubsbachFind albums by this artist guests on two tracks. The album presents nine tracks, all original compositions by Weber.
The music is mostly pretty straightforward mainstream modern Jazz, which keeps the tradition intact and offers solid musicianship. The original compositions are all based on melodic themes, frequently pretty melancholic, which are pleasant, but not really memorable. One of the tunes offers a less constrained formula, but is certainly the exception on the album, rather than the rule.
The rhythm section performs well, as expected from today’s well-schooled young musicians, swinging and keeping the music moving forward. The pianist is certainly a very interesting player and I hope to hear more from him in the future. The leader’s trumpet playing is somewhat hesitant at times, but generally is pretty expressive and coherent.
Overall, this is a promising debut album, which offers pleasant mainstream Jazz, well played but not exciting enough to turn heads. Perhaps the album was recorded a bit too early, before Weber found his own voice and style, but obviously showing potential for the future.

  | WARREN WOLF ~ CONVERGENCE MACK AVENUE 1105 (Barcode: 673203110526) ~ USA ~ Jazz Recorded: 2016 Released: 2016
This is an album by American vibraphonist / composer Warren WolfFind albums by this artist, recorded with a stellar lineup, which features pianist Brad MehldauFind albums by this artist (on five tunes), guitarist John ScofieldFind albums by this artist (on two tunes), bassist Christian McBrideFind albums by this artist and drummer Jeff WattsFind albums by this artist. It presents eleven tracks, six of which are original compositions by Wolf and five are standards (the last tune is a medley of a standard and a Classical piece).
Sadly the stellar lineup is unable to save this album from the terrible boredom that it offers to the listener. In fact this album epitomizes everything that is wrong with American Jazz: it is outdated, unimaginable, derivative and simply tedious. The original compositions are unremarkable and the standards played here offer absolutely nothing that was not already stated thousands of times before. No ambition, no imagination, no effort…
Of course these musicians can play, and they do play very well, but the result remains dull and unimpressive, similar to thousands of other mainstream American albums recorded every year and all sounding exactly the same. The two tracks with Scofield at least offer his remarkable power of expression, but that is by far not enough to save this album from complete failure.
The funny thing is of course reading the reviews of this album, written by American critics (look them up). They all think this album is remarkable, outstanding and fabulous, which of course goes to show that the entire American Jazz scene is simply completely hypocritical and rotten. Saying that Wolf is the next Milt JacksonFind albums by this artist or Bobby HutchersonFind albums by this artist is an insult to these two great pioneers. Wolf plays well technically but his playing offers no innovation or progress which was the trademark of all great vibraphonists (or Jazz musicians in general) before him.
In short this is just another boring American mainstream album, which sounds nice and lets the listener tap his feet to the steady rhythm, requiring zero intellectual effort to listen to the music, which simply washes off the listener´s mind instantly when the music is over.

  | ZAWARTKO / PIASECKI ~ LEC GLOSIE NOT ON LABEL ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-World Fusion Recorded: 2014 Released: 2015
This is the debut album by Polish Jazz duo comprising of vocalist Magdalena ZawartkoFind albums by this artist and bassist Grzegorz PiaseckiFind albums by this artist, recorded with other top Polish Jazz musicians: trumpeter Piotr WojtasikFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Tomasz WendtFind albums by this artist, pianist Artur TuznikFind albums by this artist, guitarist Marek KadzielaFind albums by this artist, drummer Wojciech BulinskiFind albums by this artist and percussionist Jose TorresFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight compositions (one repeated twice as intro and outro) which include Classical and Folklore pieces and two original compositions, one each by Zawartko and Piasecki, also inspired by external sources.
The concept behind the music is the amalgamation of Folklore and Classical Music with Jazz, which of course has been already attempted numerous times before, but in this case the selection of the music, the arrangements and the entire production of the project, which were entirely in the hands of the duo, as well as the superb execution of the music by the excellent team generate a wonderful and entirely successful outcome.
Zawartko sings occasional lyrics but mostly uses vocalese and her voice is by and large used as another instrument within the instrumental environment. Piasecki plays brilliant bass parts and naturally gets more exposure than bassists usually get in ensemble projects. The rest of the instrumentalists, mostly veterans of the scene, perform accordingly, without a hitch.
Overall this is an excellent piece of music from start to finish, intelligent, elegant and highly sensitive, tastefully conceived and brilliantly executed, in accordance to the usual high standards of the Polish Jazz scene. I have no idea why this album landed on my desk years after it was released, but better late than never. Highly recommended!

  | ZAWARTKO / PIASECKI ~ WAGABUNDA NOT ON LABEL ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-World Fusion Recorded: 2021 Released: 2021
This is the second album by the Polish Jazz duo comprising of vocalist Magdalena ZawartkoFind albums by this artist and bassist Grzegorz PiaseckiFind albums by this artist, recorded with other Polish Jazz musicians: saxophonists Tomasz PruchnickiFind albums by this artist and Tomasz WendtFind albums by this artist, pianist Robert JarmuzekFind albums by this artist, multi-instrumentalist Wojciech LubertowiczFind albums by this artist and drummer Grzegorz PalkaFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine original compositions, all co-composed by the duo.
Returning after seven years, which passed since their debut album was recorded, the duo continues exactly where they left off, creating a beautiful amalgam of Jazz with Folkloristic themes, which span the Eastern World from Middle East and up to Asian planes. The wonderful melodic themes are richly encrusted with Jazz improvisations and exotic instrumentation, creating a most pleasant listening experience.
Zawartko uses her voice like an instrument and becomes in integral part of the overall sound, rather than a soloist, although she does sing lyrics occasionally as well. Piasecki plays superb bass parts, which are the driving force of the album, Jarmuzek supplies the harmonic layers, the sax players add fiery soloing, Palka carries the polyrhythmic pulsations and Lubertowicz is in charge of the exotic sounds of the duduk and percussions, all working together to achieve the sensation of a dreamy flying carpet ride.
Of course such Jazz-World Fusion albums have been recorded many times before, this one simply has everything working for it and offers such universal aesthetics, that it can be enjoyed and loved anywhere on this planet. Its subtle Polish roots become only audible in the melancholic melody themes, but even melancholy can be felt equally anywhere on this small globe we share.
The long wait for the sophomore effort by the duo proved to be worth waiting for and it is a delightful album by every standard. It’s time to enjoy the music and hopefully we won’t have to wait for the follow up for another proverbial seven years. Thank you for the music and well done!

  | MAGDALENA ZAWARTKO ~ SATYAGRAHA REQUIEM / LYDIAN 2023/33 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2022 Released: 2023
Magdalena ZawartkoFind albums by this artist is certainly not a newcomer on the Polish Jazz scene, but she kept us all in suspense before releasing her debut album as a leader. So here it is, finally, and I am sure we should all agree that it was definitely worth the wait.
Surrounded by a team of experienced and highly talented musicians, led by pianist / composer / arranger Michał TokajFind albums by this artist, who is probably the best choice of an accompanist when recording a vocal album with Polish Jazz musicians, Zawartko delivers a highly unique and atypical piece of music, as far as vocal Jazz is concerned, which is almost entirely based on her singing vocalese, rather than lyrics, and when she chooses (in one case) to sing lyrics, those are in Hebrew. The fact that the album was recorded at what I consider to be the best recording studio in Poland, and engineered by the best sound engineer in these parts, is also an asset that can’t be ignored, and the results speaks plainly for itself.
The material, both the original compositions and those composed by others, that Zawartko selected to be included on this album, are all unified by a distinct spirituality, which is omnipresent throughout. Spirituality in the most universal sense, not akin to any specific religion or philosophy, although some of the inspirations are religion related. The improvised Jazz language and its rhythmic potency bring all these influences to a common ground, which offers elegant aesthetics and blissful, almost meditative peace of mind.
Zawartko’s angelic voice, which moves between operatic and gospel nuances, combined with the instrumental abilities of her colleagues, create a magic aura, which engulfs the listener, asking only for a moment of undivided attention, and rewarding plentifully in return. Simply give in… Side Note The above are my liner notes included on this album's artwork.
I am honored when asked by the Artists to write liner notes for their albums, always hoping that my words reflect the true spirit of the music. This is also a symbol of our mutual respect and friendship developed over the years.
The same is also true when Record Labels ask me to write liner notes for their releases, mostly in the case of reissues of archival albums, which is a symbol of their appreciation of my knowledge and historical perspective and my recognition of their dedication to the preservation of the history of recorded music and the effort to keep human Culture and Aesthetics alive.
