  | BAN / SURMAN / MANERI ~ TRANSYLVANIAN FOLK SONGS SUNNYSIDE 1580 (Barcode: 016728158022) ~ ROMANIA ~ Jazz-World Fusion Recorded: 2018 Released: 2020
This is an album by the international trio comprising of Romanian pianist Lucian BanFind albums by this artist, British saxophonist / bass clarinetist John SurmanFind albums by this artist and American violist Mat ManeriFind albums by this artist. The trio performs nine Transylvanian Folk songs originally transcribed by the great Hungarian composer Bela BartokFind albums by this artist during his ethnomusicological studies in the early 20th Century, during which he transcribed thousands of Folk pieces.
The beautiful Folk melodies are gently treated by the trio members, somewhere between their original melodic core interpretations and improvised vistas, mostly explored by Surman, who is the main soloist and who’s playing here is a tour de force of Jazz improvisation.
The interplay between the three musicians is very intimate and the sound of the trio is perfectly balanced, which produces a highly aesthetical journey through an amalgam of East European / Balkan music and Jazz improvisation, which should delight all true Jazz lovers.
This album received relatively little coverage on the international Jazz scene, perhaps due to the pandemics or the fact that most journalists did not know how to “swallow” this multilayered, complex but beautiful music. Perhaps the most important aspect of this music is its universality, proving again that music knows no borders, and any music created by people can be loved and accepted by all people, regardless of their Cultural backgrounds.
Overall, this is a stunning piece of music, which deserves to be heard all over the world, and which despite its initial “peculiarity” can easily break all barriers, creating a true intellectual pleasure storm. Not to be missed under any circumstances!

  | KARIN KROG / BERGEN BIG BAND / JOHN SURMAN ~ SEAGULL GRAPPA 4212 (Barcode: 7033662042128) ~ NORWAY ~ Big Band Jazz Recorded: 2005 Released: 2005
This is a brilliant album by Norwegian vocalist / songwriter Karin KrogFind albums by this artist, accompanied by the excellent Bergen Big BandFind albums by this artist, conducted by British saxophonist / composer John SurmanFind albums by this artist, who also adds a few soli on several of the tracks. The album presents twelve tracks, two of which are written by Krog, five are co-written by Krog and Surman, and the rest are Jazz standards. The arrangements are mostly by Surman, but four of them are by another Brit (well, born in Canada) John WarrenFind albums by this artist. The album was recorded by my Friend Jan Erik KongshaugFind albums by this artist, and offers a spectacular sound quality.
The album presents two separate European Jazz collaborations, the first between Surman and the Bergen Big Band, which also produced the superb “Another SkyFind albums with this title” album from 2014, also released on the GrappaFind albums on this label label, and the second between Krog and Surman, which started in 1976 and produced a long series of albums created oved many decades. Considering the fact that Krog and Surman are two of my all-time favorite musicians, and the Jazz Big Band is one of my favorite Jazz idioms, this album is for me an absolute delight from start to finish.
Krog, as I have already stated many times previously, is one of the finest interpreters of Jazz standards, as well as a great songwriter of her own right, and she has been active since the mid-1960s, i.e. for almost six decades now, never singing a wrong note since, and her idiosyncratic vocals are one of European Jazz best known secrets. Surman is of course a true Jazz Master in every respect and his accumulated achievements are second to none.
The Bergen Big Band is also a great representative of the European orchestral music approach, and all of their recordings are definitely worth being checked out for lovers of that particular Jazz sub-genre. Active since 1993, it is one of best European Big Bands around, featuring some of the best musicians in the country and often inviting guests from abroad.
Overall, this a brilliant album, which combines Big Band Jazz and Jazz vocals, which can hardly get any better. It showcases the unique talents of Krog and Surman, here also as arranger / conductor, in short a splendid display of talent and virtuosity. Absolutely breathtaking!

  | KARIN KROG / JOHN SURMAN ~ BLUESAND MEANTIME 09 (Barcode: 7051070000097) ~ NORWAY ~ Jazz Recorded: 1999 Released: 1999
This is wonderful duo album by Norwegian vocalist Karin KrogFind albums by this artist and British multi-instrumentalist / composer John SurmanFind albums by this artist, one of many albums they recorded together since their first meeting on stage in 1978, mostly released on the ECMFind albums on this label label and MeantimeFind albums on this label Records, like this one, which is owned by Krog. The album presents twelve original compositions, co-credited to them both with lyrics by Krog. The album was recorded at the legendary Rainbow Studio in Oslo and engineered by Jan Erik KongshaugFind albums by this artist.
The music is a wonderful amalgam of Jazz, Blues, Electronics, Nordic moods and above else elegance and good taste, which results in a unique listening experience. Krog sings lyrics and uses electronic devices and loops and Surman as usual switches between soprano and baritone saxes, clarinets, piano and synthesizers, creating a rich tapestry of sounds and feelings.
Each and every one of the compositions is a gem, combining Krog’s vocals with layers of instrumental improvisations by Surman, and although completely coherent as a whole the compositions present a diversity of musical capsules, each and every one as if originating in a different universe.
Overall this is a masterly conceived and executed piece of music in the “Art of the Duo” idiom, which exemplifies the power of minimalism. In his work with Krog, Surman always displays a different personality than on his solo or ensemble works as a leader, showing the gentler, almost romantic facet of his musical charisma.
For British Jazz enthusiasts, this album offers some of Surman’s best work, Norwegian Jazz fans need no introductions and the album is simply a sweet reminder of how superb music can become in hands if intelligent and highly talented musicians. Not to be missed and every bit as great as it was at the time of its release.

  | KARIN KROG / JOHN SURMAN ~ CLOUD LINE BLUE MEANTIME 11 (Barcode: 7051070000110) ~ NORWAY ~ Jazz Recorded: 1976 Released: 2004
This is a reissue of the debut album by the fabulous duo of Norwegian vocalist / composer Karin KrogFind albums by this artist and British saxophonist / composer John SurmanFind albums by this artist. The music was recorded in London in 1976, with the participation of keyboardist Janet CookeFind albums by this artist and drummer Stu MartinFind albums by this artist. Surman composed or co-composed all the music with Krog and Martin and played a plethora of analog synthesizers in addition to playing saxophones. The album presents seven tracks, all featuring lyrics by Paul RowlandsFind albums by this artist. The music waited for another three years to be mixed, eventually done by Jan Erik KongshaugFind albums by this artist in Oslo and released in 1979. The album was also released in Poland on the PoljazzFind albums on this label label.
The music is absolutely stunning, completely unique and revolutionary, so much so, that listening to it today, forty-five years after it was recorded, I experienced goosebumps. Krog’s idiosyncratic vocals and vocalese and Surman’s improvisations, are completely inimitable. The most astounding quality of the music is its deeply melodic feel despite the Avant-Garde exterior, which in retrospect characterizes both Krog and Surman for the entire duration of their respective careers.
I vividly remember hearing this music live at the time, as well as haring the duo several times over time, always being completely taken over by the magic they managed to create together. Some musicians are obviously destined to play together, creating a result far greater than just the sum of its parts. This album, and the further recordings by this duo, are all gems and deserve to be heard, especially since they are all absolutely timeless.
It is great that Karen manages to reissue all her recordings on her MeantimeFind albums on this label label, keeping them alive, as they would have disappeared into the depth of the abyss of forgotten music, if it was up to the Major labels.
This album remains to be a giant step in European Jazz and deserves an honorable place in every serious record collection!

  | KARIN KROG / JOHN SURMAN ~ INFINITE PATHS MEANTIME 23 (Barcode: 7041880102326) ~ NORWAY ~ Jazz Recorded: 2014 Released: 2015
This is the fourth album by the iconic Jazz duo comprising of Norwegian vocalist Karin KrogFind albums by this artist and British saxophonist John SurmanFind albums by this artist. John’s son Ben SurmanFind albums by this artist added some electronic effects and aural layers and made the live recording of a concert in Oslo, which was later mastered by the legendary sound engineer Jan Erik KongshaugFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven tracks, all original composition / improvisations by the duo.
The music is absolutely stunning, moving between songs and improvisations and keeping a perfectly coherent musical atmosphere. The mixture of the Nordic climate and Surman’s highly ambient vistas, Krog’s idiosyncratic vocals and the electronically synthesized sounds works out perfectly, resulting in a wonderful flow of emotions, that is captivating and enchanting.
Although highly improvised, the music maintains a highly melodic basis, which allows the listener to focus on the details without losing the thread and direction. In many respects this album revisits the early days of the Krog / Surman duo, which started some four decades earlier. Krog is definitely at her utmost best when improvising freely, which she does most of the time on this album.
Overall, this is a brilliant example of the “Art of the Duo” idiom and one of the best albums in Krog’s long and impressive recorded legacy. Same goes for Surman of course, and his many fans will find him at his absolute top herein. European Jazz lovers should find this album absolutely essential piece of the puzzle!

  | KARIN KROG / JOHN SURMAN ~ SONGS ABOUT THIS AND THAT MEANTIME 20 (Barcode: 7041880102029) ~ NORWAY ~ Jazz Recorded: 2013 Released: 2013
This is the third album (well third under the duo moniker but they recorded together many times over the years) by the fabulous duo of Norwegian vocalist / composer Karin KrogFind albums by this artist and British saxophonist / composer John SurmanFind albums by this artist. This time they are accompanied by Norwegian musicians: guitarist Bjorn KlakeggFind albums by this artist, vibraphonist Ivar KolveFind albums by this artist, bassist Terje GeweltFind albums by this artist and drummer Tom OlstadFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine tracks, all co-composed by Krog and Surman. The music was recorded by Jan Erik KongshaugFind albums by this artist at the Rainbow Studio in Oslo with the usual stunning sound quality.
The music is wonderful, as always, but this time completely mainstream oriented. Krog sings the lyrics of the songs in a pretty straightforward manner, and Surman, who plays mostly baritone sax and bass clarinet, soloes beautifully, but conventionally, as do all the members of the band. For Krog and Surman followers this might come as a surprise, as their work together was mostly characterized by exploring the boundaries of the Jazz idiom.
Having said that, this is still a most refined and wonderful musical experience, which offers a superb listening experience. All the instrumental performances are highly inspired and perfectly executed, and Krog’s idiosyncratic voice lost nothing of its beauty and charm over time, and she has few contenders as far as dramatic delivery is concerned.
Overall the album is a beautiful gift of music, which is always welcome from these two great Artists. Back to the roots can be truly exciting, as this album convincingly proves!

5th album by the excellent Swiss ensemble StringsFind albums by this artist, led by bassist Stephan KurmannFind albums by this artist, which is a nonet with a Jazz quintet (saxophone, trombone, bass, drums and percussion) and a string quartet. The ensemble has a history of recording works of the highest quality, usually thematic, and this album is no exception. The entire album is dedicated to the music of the great Brazilian Master Hermeto PascoalFind albums by this artist, whose music is featured here exclusively. The arrangements were made by a long time Pascoal´s associate musician, Jovino Santos NetoFind albums by this artist, and Pascoal himself adds a guest appearance on one track. Pascoal´s music has been always one of my big favorites, but this new approach to the music adds a completely new angle and makes it even more fascinating. This is perfect marriage between the European, African and South / North American musical traditions, mixing Classical, Jazz and Samba / Bossa at their most glorious and eloquent epiphanies. I can hardly describe the thrill this music send down my spine, I guess experiencing it is the only way to go about it. If you love challenging, intelligent, far-reaching and unusual music, do yourself a favor and grab this beauty – satisfaction guaranteed!

  | ALAN SKIDMORE / MIKE OSBORNE / JOHN SURMAN ~ S.O.S. OGUN 019 (Barcode: 5020675571921) ~ UK ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 1975 Released: 2006
This is a reissue of one of the most iconic British Jazz albums in all time, the only studio album by the saxophone trio comprising of Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist (tenor saxophone / drums / percussion), Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist (alto saxophone) and John SurmanFind albums by this artist (baritone and soprano saxophones / bass clarinet / synthesizers). The album presents eight original compositions, co-credited to all three members of the trio.
I vividly remember the first time when I listened to this album in 1975, being completely knocked out of my socks. The sheer chutzpah by these three musicians doing something so unheard of, playing music galactically remote from anything around, boldly combining the entire Jazz legacy into a completely new universe, and most importantly not giving a toss about what the critics will say (more about this later), was nearly an out-of-body experience. I knew them personally and heard them playing live quite often, but this album was truly something else.
The trio came together many months before the studio album was recorded and their early work together can be found on the appropriately titled “Looking For The Next OneFind albums with this title” live album, released on CuneiformFind albums on this label Records in 2013. The time spent gigging together polished their act and level of interplay and by the time they entered the studio, they were completely a three-headed one-minded musical unit.
All three players were already established and highly regarded figures on the British Jazz scene at the time, taking an active role in the revolution, which led to the creation of the new, modern British Jazz, emancipated from the American Jazz traditions and limitations. But the meeting of the trio sparked a new level of creativity and “out of the box” thinking, like Surman’s fascination with synthesizers and creating layers of background sound, which he utilizes to this very day. The complexity of simultaneous triple soloing and harmonizing is staggering and has very few parallels to this very day.
The new album’s packaging features several reviews of the album, published at the time of its release, and beautifully portrays the rigidness and ridiculous conservatism the British music press suffered from at the time, which opposed the revolutionary trends bitterly.
Overall, this is a timeless Masterpiece in the purest meaning of the term. The music is still absolutely fresh and stunning, losing absolutely nothing of its ingenuity, brilliance and spirituality. In retrospect it sounds even more beautiful than it did at the time of its creation, probably due to the fact that we have been exposed to so much bad music over time, that this sounds like honey in the ears. I’d go as far as saying that anybody who did not hear this album, did not hear British Jazz at its absolute best.

  | JOHN SURMAN ~ A BIOGRAPHY OF THE REV. ABSALOM DAWE ECM 1528 (Barcode: 731452374929) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1994 Released: 1995
This is one more of the legendary solo projects by British saxophonist / composer John SurmanFind albums by this artist, created by recording multiple layers of sound produced by alto and bass clarinets, soprano and baritone saxophones and keyboards, beautifully combined together creating heavenly music, which is like no other. Jazz, Classical, Ethnic & World and some other music varieties, which can only exist in Surman´s head before they are recorded, are present here for all of us to enjoy. Surman is a wizard of melody and sound, a Pied Piper, who strolls in front of a crowd of his followers enchanted by his unearthly inventions. There is little that needs to be added here, apart from recommending this music wholeheartedly – if this does not move you, you have a heart of stone! Visitors' Comments Christopher Brice *THE* essential Surman, IMHO!

  | JOHN SURMAN ~ ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND ECM 1463 (Barcode: 731451198120) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1991 Released: 1992
This is a masterful quartet recording by British saxophonist / composer John SurmanFind albums by this artist, accompanied by two American masters: pianist Paul BleyFind albums by this artist and bassist Gary PeacockFind albums by this artist and British drummer extraordinaire Tony OxleyFind albums by this artist. Surman gives a lot of credit to his partners on this album as compositions by all three of them are included herein with one composition coming from outside of the quartet, which is by Carla BleyFind albums by this artist. Surman contributes four of his original composition here. This is one of the most Jazz oriented and certainly Free Jazz oriented albums Surman recorded in the later part of his illustrious career and one of my personal all time favorites. Somehow the best of all the participants is encapsulated on this album; the virtuosity, the imagination, the interplay and the telepathic conversations are overwhelming. Oxley´s rare appearance is especially important and his completely unique approach to rhythm and percussive sounds is brilliantly documented here, particularly in view of the incredible sound quality of this recording, as usual with the ECMFind albums on this label catalogue. This is a masterpiece in every respect, and although most things done by Surman are quite outstanding, this one is particularly brilliant. Anybody with a pair of ears, which have been fairly recently cleaned, should find this irresistible. | JOHN SURMAN ~ CORUSCATING ECM 1702 (Barcode: 731454303323) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion Recorded: 1999 Released: 2000
This is a breathtakingly beautiful and divine album by British saxophonist / composer John SurmanFind albums by this artist, who again proves being one of the central figures in contemporary music worldwide. Accompanied only by the brilliant veteran British bassist Chris LaurenceFind albums by this artist and a string quartet, Surman explores this time the realms of chamber Jazz, integrating the string quartet arrangements and individual string parts into his music with amazing skill and ingenuity. The eleven new compositions presented here are brilliant from start to finish, as always, presenting yet another vista of his amazing talent and versatility. There is no point in going much further here, as anybody familiar with Surman´s prolific body of work needs no convincing; those who don´t, well it´s never too late, is it? Surman recorded another album with these same musicians seven years later ("The Spaces In BetweenFind albums with this title").

  | JOHN SURMAN ~ FLASHPOINTS AND UNDERCURRENTS CUNEIFOM 515/516 (Barcode: 045775051529) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1969 Released: 2025
This is an archival album by British saxophonist / composer / bandleader John SurmanFind albums by this artist, recorded on April 18, 1969 as part of the German NDR radio station series of concerts called Jazz Workshop. The 62nd edition of the series featured Surman and his tentet, which included eight British musicians: Surman, saxophonists Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist, Ronnie ScottFind albums by this artist and Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist, trombonist Malcolm GriffithsFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, bassist Harry MillerFind albums by this artist and drummer Alan JacksonFind albums by this artist, and two Austrian musicians: trombonist Erich KleinschusterFind albums by this artist and pianist Fritz PauerFind albums by this artist. The entire concert is included on this 2CD album and presents thirteen tracks, ten of which are original compositions by Surman and three (one each) are compositions by Pauer, Wheeler and Kleinschuster.
Five of the tracks (in somewhat edited form) were previously released, also on CuneiformFind albums on this label, in 2011 as the CD/DVD album “Flashpoint: NDR Jazz Workshop – April `69Find albums with this title”. Shortly before this music was recorded, Surman recorded his 2nd album as a leader, the iconic “How Many Clouds Can You See?Find albums with this title”.
The music is of course absolutely Godly, a brilliant snapshot of the explosive modern British Jazz at its absolute peak, which takes the Jazz tradition exponentially expanded into new space-time continuum. Every one of these musicians is a master of his instrument and Surman’s music is an ideal catalyst which helps the music to explode. Hearing is believing of course, but there are very few albums, which can match the genius and intensity of this music. Since the German radio sound engineers knew how to capture the sound perfectly, listening to this album is an unadulterated ecstasy.
Overall, this is probably one of the best examples ever of the early European Jazz at its pivotal stage, taking everything there is to take form the American Jazz tradition between Swing and Free and moving to the next stage of evolution. A quintessential musical moment captured for posterity and serving as a beacon pointing towards the feature.

2nd solo release by saxophonist / composer John SurmanFind albums by this artist and one of the most pivotal recordings of the era, which defines modern British Jazz. If Surman was still searching for a clear direction on his debut album, recorded just a year earlier, he surely found it here. This is phenomenal music, from start to finish. The basis of the group that recorded this album is Surman’s quartet with Surman on baritone and soprano sax and bass clarinet, John TaylorFind albums by this artist on piano, Barre PhillipsFind albums by this artist on bass and Tony OxleyFind albums by this artist on drums. | JOHN SURMAN ~ INVISIBLE THREADS ECM 2588 (Barcode: 602567113171) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 2017 Released: 2018
This is an album by iconic British Jazz saxophonist / composer John SurmanFind albums by this artist, recorded in a trio format with Brazilian pianist / composer Nelson AyresFind albums by this artist and American (resident in Norway) vibraphonist Rob WaringFind albums by this artist. The album presents twelve original compositions, all by Surman except one by Ayres. The album was recorded at the legendary Rainbow Studio in Oslo and was engineered by Jan Erik KongshaugFind albums by this artist. At the time of writing, this is the last album by Surman on the ECMFind albums on this label label, recorded almost five years ago.
The music is almost a typical Surman signature, full of Nordic melancholy, British Folk references, highly lyrical and beautifully melodic. The minimalist trio format suits the music perfectly and the two companions are in complete blissful company with Surman’s long soprano and baritone saxophones and bass clarinet soli, which dominate the proceedings.
The wonderfully serene atmosphere that prevails for the entire duration of the album is a soothing remedy for the dreadful noise that surrounds us in the contemporary life, and listening to this music is very much like a meditating session, which restores one’s balance.
Surman is a brilliant composer and despite the fact that he recorded dozens of albums with his compositions, he manages to reinvent himself time after time, like a phoenix, fully ablaze in his Genius.
Ayres, who is a brilliant pianist and a great composer / arranger, renowned for his Big Band recordings, stays very much in the background on this album, patiently and amicably accompanying Surman, who gets the spotlight, and the same can be said about Waring. The quite unusual sound of saxophone, piano and vibraphone / marimba proves to work out splendidly.
Overall, this is another superb addition to Surman’s gorgeous recording legacy, which emphasizes his musical consequence and immense talents. For all his many followers, this is an absolute must have album, and needless to say we all hope for more albums to follow.

  | JOHN SURMAN ~ JOHN SURMAN VOCALION 8402 (Barcode: 765387840228) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1968 Released: 2005
Saxophonist / composer John SurmanFind albums by this artist is a true icon of the British / European Jazz scene for over four decades. The immense body of work Surman produced over the years, starting with his numerous UK recordings in the late 1960s and 1970s and then through his association with the German ECMFind albums on this label label, reflect the absolute pinnacle of European Jazz. John’s incredible improvisational ability and masterly technique on several reed instruments made him a most welcome contributor to scores of pivotal albums recorded in the formative years of British modern Jazz, with such illustrious names as Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist, Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist, Graham CollierFind albums by this artist, John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist (ExtrapolationFind albums with this title) and many others. His work is always characterized by pioneering achievements, embracing new technology and new musical forms and constantly changing, like a true musical chameleon. This album is his debut as a leader and might come as quite a surprise to listeners, who are familiar with his more contemporary works. The album presents two quite distinctive sides of his musical personality at the time, appropriately divided between what used to be Side A and Side B of the original LP. Surman plays the baritone saxophone exclusively on this album, demonstrating his command of the instrument. On Side A he leads a sextet with Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist (his close associate at the time) – alto sax and Harry MillerFind albums by this artist – bass, exploring some Caribbean / calypso rhythms and playing music not composed by himself (Sonny RollinsFind albums by this artist is the composer of one of the four tracks). On Side B the ensemble is expanded to an eleven-piece band, including Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist and Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist – trumpets, Malcolm GriffithsFind albums by this artist and Paul RutherfordFind albums by this artist – trombones, Dave HollandFind albums by this artist – bass, Alan JacksonFind albums by this artist – drums and others. The music is a wonderful three-piece suite composed by Surman, a prime example of the British modern Jazz, with superb solos and free-form passages, culminating in a powerful big band orgy of sound. Definitely something any Surman fan will be happy to add to his collection and a beautiful piece of the puzzle representing Surman’s musical legacy.

  | JOHN SURMAN ~ MORNING GLORY FMR 013 (Barcode: 649849982179) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1973 Released: 1995
In complete contrast to the first stage of British saxophonist John SurmanFind albums by this artist’s career, which lasted for about four years (between 1968 and 1971) and was characterized by almost obsessive recording and touring, he decided to “hold his horses” from that point on and record a limited number of albums each year – a modus operandi he adheres to consistently to this very day. 1972 saw the release of just one Surman album, the revolutionary Westering HomeFind albums with this title - a complete solo project. Similarly, 1973 brought us just one Surman album entitled “Morning Glory”, which was also the (collective) name of the group that recorded the album. Consisting of the top players on the British scene it included Surman on soprano saxophone and bass clarinet (note the fact that he does not play here his primary instrument – the baritone saxophone) with Malcolm GriffithsFind albums by this artist on trombone, Norwegian guitarist Terje RypdalFind albums by this artist, John TaylorFind albums by this artist on acoustic and electric piano, Chris LaurenceFind albums by this artist on bass and John MarshallFind albums by this artist on drums. Musically the album is quite surprising, as it marks Surman’s first venture into the field of Jazz-Rock Fusion (under his flag that is). Although the structure of the music is still very free form and the solos tend to float into free improvisational spheres, the guitar, electric piano and the rhythmic patterns are close to Fusion (which was at the peak of its development at the time). One might call this Free-Fusion, but of course labeling this magnificent music is completely senseless. Surman’s solos are, as usual, brilliant but all the musicians contribute more that a fair share to the album’s overall mastery. Originally released on IslandFind albums on this label, the album was unavailable for many years and having it back in circulation is a marvel. Of course it is an absolute must have for every follower of the British Saxophone Colossus and fan of modern British Jazz. Highly recommended!

  | JOHN SURMAN ~ NORDIC QUARTET ECM 1553 (Barcode: 731452712028) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1994 Released: 1995
Breathtakingly beautiful album by British saxophone Giant John SurmanFind albums by this artist, recorded with Nordic (or rather Norwegian) friends: singer Karin KrogFind albums by this artist, guitarist Terje RypdalFind albums by this artist and pianist Vigleik StoraasFind albums by this artist. Anybody familiar with Surman´s immense talent needs no introduction to his music, but this album is rather special in many respects and therefore uniquely interesting. The Norwegian partners fill this album with typical Scandinavian chilly atmosphere and the result is simply stunning. Rypdal, as usual, adds his ambient layers, Storaas delicately fills the spaces with his touch, but the true star of this album is my old friend Karin Krog, with her amazing vocal performances. Although little known outside her country, I´ve always considered her as one of the greatest female Jazz singers out there. Surman is of course brilliant, as always, both as a player and a composer (he composed and co-composed the majority of the music herein). This music works better in the heat of the day than a full-blast air conditioning unit! An absolute must!

  | JOHN SURMAN ~ PRIVATE CITY ECM 1366 (Barcode: 602517758568) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1987 Released: 2008
British saxophonist / composer John SurmanFind albums by this artist is undoubtedly one of the most important Jazz musicians ever. His immense body of work, accumulated over the years, presents a true Renaissance Man; brilliantly inventive, immensely skilled and with an unlimited imagination. After taking part in the British modern Jazz revolution in the 1960s / 1070s, Surman slowly developed an international career and his recording on the legendary ECMFind albums on this label label are all absolute masterpieces. This brilliant album is one of a series of solo recordings by Surman, on which he explores the technique of musical conversations with himself, playing multiple instruments (soprano and baritone saxophones, recorders, bass clarinet and synthesizers) and using multi-track studio wizardry. The music is deeply contemplative and amazingly beautiful, from start to finish, drawing the listened into its depths and engulfing him completely. Listening to this music is not only an aesthetic experience, but also a deeply emotional one. Essential! Visitors' Comments Christopher Brice Wonderful album - I saw him play in London when this was released - it was extraordinary to see how he composed multi-layered interactive music with what would now be regarded as primitive electronics. A lovely man who puts his huge heart and soul into making extraordinary music

This is a breathtakingly beautiful album by the British saxophonist / composer John SurmanFind albums by this artist, who never stands still even for one moment, constantly re-inventing himself. Combining Jazz and contemporary Classical music, Surman composed this music for the Salisbury Festival and it was recorded live at the overwhelmingly impressive Salisbury Cathedral with Surman, keyboardist John TaylorFind albums by this artist at the cathedral´s organ and the festival´s chorus. Breathtakingly beautiful solo album by the British saxophonist / composer John SurmanFind albums by this artist recorded completely on his own using studio overdubs of bass clarinet, soprano saxophone, baritone saxophone, keyboards and percussion tracks. Surman composed all the music, which was inspired by the wonderful county of Cornwell. | JOHN SURMAN ~ SALTASH BELLS ECM 2266 (Barcode: 602527981086) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 2009 Released: 2012
This is another addition to the series of solo albums by British multi-instrumentalist / composer John SurmanFind albums by this artist, which he has been creating in the last 40 years since the release of his "Westering HomeFind albums with this title" album in 1972. These musical wonders create a unique universe of music, of which Surman is the sole Creator, but which is shared by many of his admirers all over the world.
This album comprises of ten new original compositions by Surman, which he performs by overdubbing tracks while conversing with himself. He uses soprano, tenor and baritone saxophones, alto, bass and contrabass clarinets, harmonica and synthesizer to create an amazing range of sounds and colors. He plays the melody / theme and later the improvisations on top of a synthesized background, sometimes using loops and other devices, but cleverly avoids the usage of electronic drums, which might have been disastrous in such setting.
Surman never ceases to amaze with his wondrous sense of melody and his improvisational skills. Although those solo albums have a certain feeling of "familiarity" about them, they are all quite different from each other and all are simply astounding. This album has a slightly more mellow and lyrical atmosphere and is a bit less experimental, which perhaps makes it more accessible to a wider range of listeners. Not that Surman intentionally tries to sound more accessible, just this album´s overall mood is more "inviting", which will perhaps win him new fans, coming across his music for the first time.
With almost half a century of sublime music making behind him, Surman is an icon of British and European Jazz, and lucky for us all still an active and fruitful participant on the contemporary scene. His golden touch and legendary talents never fail, and this album is another absolute must have for his many fans, who will surely agree. Nor to be missed!

  | JOHN SURMAN ~ STRANGER THAN FICTION ECM 1534 (Barcode: 731452185020) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1993 Released: 1994
This absolutely brilliant album by British saxophonist / composer John SurmanFind albums by this artist is very special as it was recorded by an all-British quartet, which consists of legendary players associated with the British Jazz revolution of the 1960s / 1970s, when they all used to play together. Surman is surrounded by true friends: pianist John TaylorFind albums by this artist, bassist Chris LaurenceFind albums by this artist and drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist, and this sympathetic personal vibes obviously influence the musicians, who play their hearts out. Of the eight compositions sic are by Surman and the other two are co-composed by the entire quartet. Although recorded some twenty years after the British Jazz was at its absolute creative peak, this album is still a great evidence of the potential and aptitude of the scene. Of course by now there are many young and extremely talented British musicians around, but these old-timers not only have no intention of leaving us, hopefully any time soon, but still can play like nobody else. Brilliant stuff!

  | JOHN SURMAN ~ THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF SIMON SIMON ECM 1193 (Barcode: 042282916020) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1981 Released: 1990
This amazing album is the 2nd release by British saxophonist / composer John SurmanFind albums by this artist on the ECMFind albums on this label label. Accompanied only by drummer Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist, Surman performs a nine-part suite composed by him or co-composed with DeJohnette (one track is traditional). Surman uses multi-layered studio technique to create the effect of several instruments juxtaposed, although they are all played by him, which will become his trademark in years to come. Both the music and the performances are of course stellar and Surman´s pioneering and visionary approach to Jazz and other music forms is already strongly present here. This is also one of the most important recordings on ECM, inaugurating the label´s domination on the Jazz / contemporary music scene for the next decade – the 1980s. In retrospect this album is a timeless masterpiece, which deserves a place in every serious music collection. A classic!

  | JOHN SURMAN ~ THE RAINBOW BAND SESSIONS LOSEN 105 (Barcode: 7090025831058) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 2006 - 2007 Released: 2011
This is an album which never was meant to be… Legendary Norwegian sound engineer Jan Erik KongshaugFind albums by this artist, owner of the revered Rainbow Studio in Oslo and a Jazz musician of his own eight, suggested to the British Jazz colossus John SurmanFind albums by this artist to use some spare time in his studio for a series of informal "just for fun" meetings between Surman and local Jazz musicians. These sessions, which continued for several months, were also recorded, although never intended to be released. Eventually, however, the result turned out to be simply too good to remain forgotten, and this album lets us hear this beautiful music after all. The detailed story of these sessions is described by Surman in the album´s liner notes.
Surman used these sessions to revisit the early days of his career, reviving and restoring several octet arrangements originating in the late 1960s, which were only partly saved. He also contacted his life-time "soul-mate", the brilliant composer / arranger John WarrenFind albums by this artist, who sent a bunch of his music to be used as well. Finally, of the eight tracks included on the album, four are by Warren, two are by Surman, one is by the pioneering British Jazz educator and pianist Eddie HarveyFind albums by this artist, written originally for the celebrated saxophonist Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist, who was a member of Surman´s octet and the last is a Thelonious MonkFind albums by this artist classic arranged by the great British saxophonist / composer / arranger / bandleader Alan CohenFind albums by this artist. As a result this album is not only a fantastic piece of music, but also a fine tribute to the history of British Jazz.
Surman plays on all tracks, baritone or soprano saxophones (solos on four tracks), as is most of the rhythm section; the rest of the musicians fluctuate between two lineups. The important lesson, however, is how excellent all these players are, although most of them are very little known outside of their own country, which tells how exceptional the Norwegian Jazz in particular and the European Jazz in general are.
The music and particularly the arrangements have a wonderfully nostalgic tinge to them, and yet sound completely contemporary and up to date. Although paying tribute to the early days of the modern British Jazz scene, it also conveys a clear message that Jazz genres and conventions are only secondary in the face of universally superb music, masterfully composed, skillfully arranged and brilliantly performed, with zest, elegance and above all love of the subject matter.
So even if this album was never meant to be, it definitely defeats the original intention of staying beneath the surface and turns out to be another masterpiece, as everything that Surman touches, now for over five decades. With the 70th Birthday Celebration behind him, Surman continues relentlessly to make his mark on the Jazz idiom, being one of its most impressive champions. Definitely worth getting and for the numerous Surman fans this is an absolute must!

  | JOHN SURMAN ~ WESTERING HOME FMR 016 ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1972 Released: 1995
British saxophone Colossus John SurmanFind albums by this artist was one of the busiest European Jazz musicians in the late 1960s. Between the time he recorded his eponymous debut album as a leader in 1968 and this 1972 recording Surman took part in no less than 45 recording sessions, both as a leader and sideman, recorded in UK, Germany and France. His position at the vortex of the burgeoning European modern Jazz and Improvised Music scene was a catalyst expanding the musical horizons and contributing to the scene’s rapid development by creating new musical discoveries. Surman’s musical fingerprints were all over the music, regardless if his input was just a guest solo appearance or a leading position. His legendary group called simply The TrioFind albums by this artist (with bassist Barre PhillipsFind albums by this artist and drummer Stu MartinFind albums by this artist), active between 1969 and 1971, was one of Europe’s most visionary ensembles and its recording legacy stands out as a beacon of European Jazz to this very day. Following this frantic activity Surman decided to take a radical side step and re-evaluate his output and musical approach. The result was this magnificent album, recorded completely solo by Surman by multi-tracking (overdubbing) the instruments (various saxophones, keyboards and percussion instruments) – an extremely bold and innovative approach to recording at that time (Surman will use this same approach in the future). These “conversations with himself” are all deeply personal statements; soul-searching, revealing and contemplative, all exquisitely executed. Baritone and soprano saxophone duels, long solos, shifting rhythms and moods – all the ingredients of great music are here for the listener to absorb and delight in. Surman proves again not only his brilliant technique as a player and composer, but must importantly being an innovator and pioneer of groundbreaking ideas. The album remains to this very day as a milestone of modern European Jazz and one of the great achievements of Surman’s illustrious career. The album was originally released on the HelpFind albums on this label label – a short-lived subsidiary of IslandFind albums on this label dedicated to “bizarre” stuff - and unavailable for many years. Great to have it back in circulation. Wholeheartedly recommended.

  | JOHN SURMAN ~ WITHHOLDING PATTERN ECM 1295 (Barcode: 042282540720) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1984 Released: 1985
This is the 3rd album on the ECMFind albums on this label label by British saxophonist / composer John SurmanFind albums by this artist, which similarly to his debut for the label, recorded five years earlier, is another solo project. Surman plays baritone and soprano saxophones, bass clarinet, recorder, piano and synthesizers, creating multi-layered conversations with himself, which are uniquely beautiful and emotionally breathtaking. Of course Surman would return to this pattern again in the future, with each of these solo albums being a complete blast. This is definitely a masterpiece of modern music and a vivid example of human ingenuity and endless talent. Visitors' Comments Christopher  Brice The first John Surman (and probably the first ECM record) that I ever heard: I picked up the LP from a library sale in a country town in England. It is no exaggeration to say that my life was transformed and I now have nearly every Surman recording released. Withholding Pattern is still almost my favourite; Biography of the Rev Absolom Dawe (not yet on Jazzis) wins by a short head. I respectfully agree with Adam´s description, and the experience was enhanced by seeing and hearing the man construct one of his multi-layered conversations solo live ons stage; they are not made by sequential recording but by setting up fading loops etc in real time.

  | JOHN SURMAN ~ WORDS UNSPOKEN ECM 2789 (Barcode: 602458620351) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 2022 Released: 2024
This is a studio album by the iconic British Jazz saxophonist / composer / bandleader John SurmanFind albums by this artist, recorded in a quartet setting with British guitarist Rob LuftFind albums by this artist, American (resident in Norway) vibraphonist Rob WaringFind albums by this artist and Norwegian drummer Thomas StronenFind albums by this artist. The album was recorded at the legendary Rainbow Studio in Oslo, engineered by Martin AbrahamsenFind albums by this artist, who replaced Jan Erik KongshaugFind albums by this artist following his demise. The album presents ten tracks, all of which are original compositions by Surman.
The album reflects Surman’s long time connection with the Norwegian Jazz scene, not only as far as playing with Norwegian Jazz musicians and recording in Norway, but also his obvious affinity to the Nordic sound, which is particularly overwhelming on this album.
The music is very melodic, but the compositions and instrumentations are minimalist, very subdued and reflective, creating a lethargic atmosphere, which is of course characteristic of the Nordic Jazz sound. But of course Surman’s recordings in the last couple of decades all had already this tendency, so the consequence is not very surprising.
Surman is the dominating soloist and his absolute control of performance is phenomenal, completely untouched by the flow of time. The three accompanying musicians are masters of their trade, showing remarkable restrain and obvious respect towards the leader, leaving him in the spotlight at all time.
Overall, this is another tour de force by the great Master, one of the greatest European Jazz musicians of all time, who seems to be unstoppable and still in perfect condition. We are extremely lucky to be able to enjoy the fruits of his labor for such a long period of time, and of course pray for more of such bliss to be sent upon us.

  | JOHN SURMAN / JACK DEJOHNETTE ~ INVISIBLE NATURE ECM 1796 (Barcode: 044001637629) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 2000 Released: 2002
Twenty years after recording their previous duo project ("The Amazing Adventures Of Simon SimonFind albums with this title") for the ECMFind albums on this label label, British saxophonist / composer John SurmanFind albums by this artist and US drummer / composer Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist meet again for a live recording of almost completely improvised music, captured herein. Both these musicians have already established their status as Giants of modern music, which means they need not to prove anything anymore. This music is made for the pleasure (intellectual and emotional as one) of making music together and confirming the bond of musical friendship. The nature of Improvised Music makes it a priori more difficult to identify with than composed music. The process of the on-the-fly invention and creation can be extremely egocentric and intimate. But these two musicians magically create instantaneous music, which is communicative and immediately likeable, at least to well trained listeners. This album should be considered a true musical gem of rare quality by anybody with enough aesthetic integrity to listen to it open-mindedly. Surman´s virtuosity is simply spine-tingling and clearly time seems to flow in a parallel universe as far as he´s concerned, as he remains completely untouched by it. For me listening to this music evokes deeply emotional reaction, every time, confirming yet again my opinion that Surman is surely one of the very few prophetic musicians still among us. Beyond essential!

Saxophonists John SurmanFind albums by this artist and Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist and drummer Tony OxleyFind albums by this artist are three of the most distinguished representatives of the burgeoning British Jazz scene in the late 1960s and 1970s. Each of them has a most impressive recorded legacy from that period and of course in the years to follow. This album, initially released in 1972, collects five stunning and previously unreleased outtakes, recorded at several sessions involving these three musicians, most of which originate from the sessions for Skidmore’s debut album. Each and every one of these tracks is absolutely superb, and considering the fact these are outtakes, this is ample evidence of the unbelievably high standard of the music at the time. The first track presents the unaccompanied saxophone trio comprising of Alan Skidmore (tenor), Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist (alto) and John Surman (baritone), which would later become known as S.O.S.Find albums by this artist and record albums under that name. On the next track the lineup is expanded to an octet with the addition of Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist (flugelhorn), Malcolm GriffithFind albums by this artist (trombone), John TaylorFind albums by this artist (piano), Harry MillerFind albums by this artist (bass) and Alan JacksonFind albums by this artist (drums). The third track is actually recorded in two parts, with a personnel change between the two parts: part one is a quartet (Surman, Taylor, Miller & Jackson), that features a rare appearance of Surman on piano, and part two a quintet (Skidmore, Wheeler, Taylor, Miller & Oxley) introducing Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist (trumpet) and Tony Oxley (drums). The remaining two tracks are recorded by the same quintet. Surman composed three of the pieces and his fellow saxophonist John WarrenFind albums by this artist composed another one. The music is absolutely divine from start to finish in every respect – the compositions, the solos and the interplay are all breathtaking. My personal favorite is the incredible work by Oxley, by far one of the most innovative and inventive drummers in Jazz. Oxley’s approach at the time is somewhat similar to the incredible work done by the young Tony WilliamsFind albums by this artist, when he joined the Miles DavisFind albums by this artist quintet. Overall this is one the finest examples of British Jazz ever recorded and an absolutely essential document of the era.

  | JOHN SURMAN / JOHN WARREN ~ TALES OF THE ALGONQUIN VOCALION 8410 (Barcode: 765387841027) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1970 Released: 2005
Canadian born saxophonist / composer John WarrenFind albums by this artist and British Jazz giant John SurmanFind albums by this artist were “soul brothers” in many respects: both played primarily the baritone saxophone, both composed fabulous modern Jazz and both played together on many of the period’s pivotal albums. This joint effort was the culmination of their work together, which remains as one of the greatest European Jazz albums of all times. Warren composed all the music, which includes four shorter pieces and the extended five-part suite, which gives the album its title, all performed by a Big Band, comprising of the creme de la creme of British Jazz musicians at the time. It includes trumpeters Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist and Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist, sax players: Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist, Stan SultzmannFind albums by this artist, Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist, John Surman and John Warren, pianist John TaylorFind albums by this artist, bass players: Harry MillerFind albums by this artist and Barre PhillipsFind albums by this artist and drummers: Alan JacksonFind albums by this artist and Stu MartinFind albums by this artist (and other less known players). The compositions, arrangements, orchestration and performances are all stellar from start to finish and the overall quality of the music is completely outstanding and miles ahead of any competition. It is interesting to compare this album with any Big Band recording made at the same time in America and see that the Brits left their American counterparts aeons behind by that time. I have been harshly criticized many times (by Americans of course) for saying that although Americans invented Jazz, Europeans perfected it. Anybody listening to this album and still not admitting this to be true must be completely deaf. To me this is a perfect album, one of very few that deserves to be called “perfect” in every respect. Beyond essential!

  | JOHN TAYLOR / JOHN SURMAN ~ AMBLESIDE DAYS AH UM 013 (Barcode: 5017771100223) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1992 Released: 1992
This is an insanely beautiful album by the duo of British Jazz Giants: pianist / composer John TaylorFind albums by this artist and saxophonist / clarinetist John SurmanFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight original compositions, all by Taylor. As if the presence of Taylor and Surman was not enough to make this album perfect, the music was recorded at the legendary Rainbow Studio in Oslo with the brilliant Jan Erik KongshaugFind albums by this artist at the helm, which results in a sublime sound quality and clarity.
The music is everything one might expect from these two Masters; Taylor has been one of the greatest songweavers of British Jazz and the compositions present here are surely among his best ever. The intimate duos with Surman, who by playing the soprano and baritone saxophones and alto and bass clarinets is able to create a plethora of diverse moods and ambiences, which turn these pieces into fully developed musical vistas, which express a whole world of music despite the fact of being "just" duets.
The telepathic conversations between Taylor and Surman are mind blowing and serve as a classic example of the "Art Of The Duo" idiom, which is one of the most challenging as much as rewarding Jazz environments.
The album is sadly criminally obscure among the British Jazz fans and collectors. It was released on the short lived Ah UmFind albums on this label label founded by musician / producer Nick PurnellFind albums by this artist, which in the early 1990s released sixteen superb albums, all of which are treasures of the British Jazz legacy. Although quite difficult to find today, they are all worth pursuing and highly recommended.
For Taylor and Surman connoisseurs this is of course an absolute must have, but all true Jazz lovers should find this an absolute masterpiece and an essential part of any serious European Jazz collection. Side Note British composer / arranger Nick PurnellFind albums by this artist founded the short-lived Ah UmFind albums on this label label in 1989, which existed until 1993 and released a total of sixteen albums with some of the top British Jazz musicians of that period and a few American guests, which remain as of the finest recordings of that period. For some inexplicable reason all these albums are almost completely obsolete today, despite their excellent musical value, which is a shame, as they all deserve an honorable place in any decent British Jazz collection.

Three more musicians are listed as contributors to this recording: vocalist Catrinel BejenariuFind albums by this artist, caval (Eastern flute) player Mandela GajolFind albums by this artist and trombonist Florian RaduFind albums by this artist. The album presents eleven original songs, which are all credited (lyrics and music) collectively to the band members and sung in English. The album is lavishly packaged in a digibook format, accompanied by a beautiful book full of extraordinary photographs of the group in different locations, the songs lyrics and photos of Romanian architectural treasures of great beauty, many of which are in a desperate need of conservation and restoration. The entire package, i.e. the music and the book are an exquisite example of how Culture should be presented.
The album is an absolute blast from start to finish and honestly I had a hard time to believe my ears when I heard it for the first time. I kept listening to it again and again to be absolutely sure I am not under some momentary lapse of reason, before finally deciding that this is one of the best Rock / Alternative Rock albums I have heard in the last decade. The quality of these songs and the performance are simply stellar. I must admit that I´m familiar with many Romanian musicians, mostly those from the Jazz scene, but I never expected that a Romanian Rock band could be capable to producing such superb piece of music.
The music is beautifully melodic, lyrical and moving, presenting a diverse collection of stylistic approaches, from classic Rock ballads to World Music influenced explorations and even a reserved from of Rap. The arrangements, which range from calm acoustic guitar backing, via almost hard Rock moments to Brass-Rock Jazzy riffs are all simply outstanding. The entire album simply broadcasts intelligence, elegance, good taste, professionalism and above all a deep feel for music, which is so rare these days.
Even the fact that the songs lyrics are performed in English, something that usually would have unlocked my terrible wrath, does not worry me at all. Yes, Gutau has a foreign accent, but it is so charming, that in his case it becomes an asset, which only spices his wonderfully theatrical delivery. But URMA are definitely not about a vocalist supported by a band, en contraire they are an integrated music making unit, that has but a few equals.
I know I am stepping on a perilous ground here, but the music of URMA takes me on a magic ride back in time, when music was as real and as kicking as what they are playing today; a progress in retrograde? But these are just rumblings of an old man. Grab this album any way you can, go and hear them play, look them up on the Net - they are simply fabulous!
