Accompanied only by drummer Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist, Surman performs a nine-part suite composed by him or co-composed with DeJohnette (one track is traditional). Surman uses multi-layered studio technique to create the effect of several instruments juxtaposed, although they are all played by him, which will become his trademark in years to come. Both the music and the performances are of course stellar and Surman´s pioneering and visionary approach to Jazz and other music forms is already strongly present here. This is also one of the most important recordings on ECM, inaugurating the label´s domination on the Jazz / contemporary music scene for the next decade – the 1980s. In retrospect this album is a timeless masterpiece, which deserves a place in every serious music collection. A classic!
