  | AN ON BAST ~ SONGS FOR RUNNING THROUGH GRASS GHOST KITCHEN 01 ~ POLAND ~ Electronic & Ambient Recorded: 2014 Released: 2014
Polish Jazz enthusiasts are familiar with electronic producer and live performer An On BastFind albums by this artist (real name Anna SudaFind albums by this artist) thanks to a series of wonderful recordings she made with trumpeter Maciej FortunaFind albums by this artist, where her extraordinary creations met the Jazz idiom. But before recording with Fortuna she was already a world famous artists, performer and recording artist of her own accord with an ongoing career since 2006. An On Bast recorded this solo album after the recordings with Fortuna and its release also marks a debut on her own record label called Ghost Kitchen. It includes eleven relatively short tracks, all composed by her.
Contemporary electronic / ambient music is rarely interesting to me, as it is based mostly on schematic, very predictable sound formulas and rhythmic patterns. The great Godfathers of electronic music, like Karlheinz StockhausenFind albums by this artist, Edgar VareseFind albums by this artist and many others, started the electronic explorations to expand the borders of sound as known to the human ear, but by the end of the 20th Century it was completely bastardized, commercialized and vandalized by the Pop (non)Culture of the time, becoming more of a noise pollution than music in any respect.
Of course there are always exceptions and An On Bast is for me one of them. Her electronic / ambient sounds are aesthetically pleasing; non aggressive and diverse enough to keep the attention of the listener rather than hypnotize him by a drone like repetitious mechanical sound poison. There is enough melodic element, development and variety to keep things interesting for the duration of the album, and listening to it becomes quite a fun after a while, especially in a relaxed, hassle-free environment, like driving or late night listening.
Although I hope An On Bast will continue her involvement with the Jazz world in the future, her electronic works are now another avenue of soundscapes I find worth following. Well done!

  | LUKASZ BOROWICKI ~ SONGS WITH RHYMES NOT ON LABEL ~ POLAND ~ Avant-Garde Jazz Recorded: 2017 Released: 2017
This is the third album by Polish Jazz guitarists / composer Lukasz BorowickiFind albums by this artist and his second recording with a trio he recorded his debut with, which also includes bassist Mariusz PrasniewskiFind albums by this artist and Danish drummer Kasper Tom ChristiansenFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine original compositions, all by Borowicki and is beautifully recorded with wonderful aural atmosphere.
The music on this album is meant to present the acoustic side of Borowicki´s guitar playing and as a result is indeed very delicate, intimate and low volume. The rhythm section offers a remarkable support to this acoustic effort, playing also very subtly, but clearly in sync with the leader and most inventively. Therefore as a trio effort, this album is absolutely fascinating and one of the best of its kind I have come across lately.
However, Borowicki evidently steps here towards much more Free Jazz and Improvised Music than on his earlier recordings. In my review of his debut album I mentioned that his playing reminds me of early John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist recordings; the music here is much closer to what Derek BaileyFind albums by this artist had to offer. Nothing wrong with that of course, except for the fact that Borowicki is stepping away from the majority of Jazz listeners and entering the Avant Garde niche, with everything that such a move implies.
As a result there are almost no melodic themes here, at most some melodic fragments, which is a pity considering Borowicki´s fine composing talent, which he displayed on his earlier recordings.
Overall this is a bold step for this young and talented musician, which is obviously a part of his search towards his musical self-discovery. People expecting traditional guitar playing will be definitely disappointed, but Improvised Music / Free Jazz lovers should find this album an exquisite example of trio cooperation and elegant European non-aggressive and yet completely individualistic music creation.

  | JACK BRUCE / ROBIN TROWER ~ SONGS FROM THE ROAD RUF 1224 (Barcode: 710347122425) ~ UK ~ Blues-Rock Recorded: 2009 Released: 2015
This is a reissue of the live album by British Rock / Blues icons: bassist / vocalist / songwriter Jack BruceFind albums by this artist and guitarists / songwriter Robin TrowerFind albums by this artist, accompanied here by the great drummer Gary HusbandFind albums by this artist. The album was released originally in 2009 as “Seven Moons LiveFind albums with this title”, and is expanded here by the inclusion of a DVD, which documents the concert. The album presents thirteen tracks, mostly co-written by Bruce and Trower and a few older classic songs by Bruce. The DVD adds one track not present on the CD.
The Bruce / Trower cooperation produced three studio albums: “B.L.T.Find albums with this title”, “TruceFind albums with this title” and “Seven MoonsFind albums with this title”, all great examples of British Blues-Rock and the magnificent songwriting talents and instrumental virtuosity by these two musicians. This live album was the last work they recorded together.
The music is a great example of the power trio Rock format, which by the time this album was recorded was almost completely obsolete, but lost absolutely nothing of its validity and power of expression. Trower continues to record and perform in the trio setting until today.
Bruce demonstrates here his incredible vocal abilities, which remain unparalleled. In retrospect this is sadly one of the last of his recordings, which emphasizes the void his death created.
Overall, this is a brilliant piece of Blues-Rock by two of the genre’s most important protagonist, which is of course an essential part of any serious record collection documenting it. For Bruce faithful followers, this is a great opportunity to hear him in his later period, and of course anything he ever recorded is absolute musical gold.

  | COMUS ~ SONG TO COMUS - THE COMPLETE COLLECTION CASTLE 1121 (Barcode: 5050749411211) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1970 - 1974 Released: 2005
This extraordinary album is one of the most anticipated reissues in the history of Prog. It includes all the material recorded by ComusFind albums by this artist, which includes their two albums: First UtteranceFind albums with this title (recorded 1970) and To Keep From CryingFind albums with this title (recorded 1974), two singles by the group and another single by Roger WoottonFind albums by this artist – the band’s main writer and singer. There is also one previously unreleased song recorded for the debut album. It is the debut album, which brought the band the cult status as one of the strangest and most interesting bands in the Prog history. It remains to this day a timeless masterpiece and deserves a place in the pantheon of Prog. The material, the weird vocals and superb playing is years ahead of anything that was recorded at that time. A mixture of horror, folk, Avant-Garde, theatrics and pure genus, definitely a unique musical creation, which is now available again after 35 years of dormancy. The second album is of course not nearly as good as the debut, recorded under pressures from the record label to produce “commercial” material. Nevertheless having the entire output by Comus in one beautiful release is bliss incarnate. An absolute must!

  | DRUMBIENTONE ~ SONGS OF PLANETS AND MOONS VINYL ON ~ POLAND ~ Electronic & Ambient Recorded: 2024 Released: 2024
This is the debut album by DrumbientoneFind albums by this artist or the alter ego of Polish Jazz drummer / composer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist. The album presents nineteen short tracks, named after the planets and moons of our solar system and beyond. The music was inspired by the electromagnetic vibrations by these celestial objects, as registered by human space probes like Voyager.
The music has nothing to do with Jazz, and offers a very personal alternative to sound creating, but considering the rich and complex personality of Bartlomiej, it is not entirely surprising to find him dealing with an entirely different mode of expression.
I am neither a great specialist nor a follower of Electronic / Ambient Music, but on a purely aesthetic level, the music offers quite a fascination listening experience, which is certainly different from most of what we get exposed to, and expanding one’s horizons (sonically and otherwise) is always a positive step.
Overall, I am always glad to embrace anything Bartlomiej Oles is involved in, as he has never disappointed me since many years. Although this is a very extreme experiment with soundscapes, I enjoyed it and recommend to other inquisitive listeners to explore it as well. It is definitely an interstellar trip.

This is the third album by Israeli singer Nurit GalronFind albums by this artist, who was one of the most influential and revered Artists on the local scene in the late 1970s and through the 1980s. Galron was a gallant pioneer of the Music & Poetry movement, which had a loyal following at the time and brought modern Israeli poetry to a much wider audiences than just the poetry buffs. This album is dedicated solely to the poetry written by the sublime Israeli poet Natan ZachFind albums by this artist, and includes eleven of his poems which had music composed to by the absolutely crème de la crème of young Israeli composers like Yoni RechterFind albums by this artist, Matti CaspiFind albums by this artist, Shalom HanochFind albums by this artist, Ilan WirtzbergFind albums by this artist, Shlomo YdovFind albums by this artist, Hanan YovelFind albums by this artist and also (one of the songs) by the Godfather of Israeli songwriting Alexander ArgovFind albums by this artist. These beautiful songs have been an integral part of the Israeli cultural legacy for over three decades now, completely untouched by time and sounding now better than ever. The beauty of the melodies combined with the depth of Zach´s exquisite poems is simply an unbeatable combination with an everlasting added value. In retrospect this is one of the true Israeli music classic recordings, matched only by a few others over time. It also served as an inspiration for generation of young Israeli songwriters and singer to combine the better of the two worlds: music and poetry, which still is felt today.
This expanded edition adds a whole CD of bonus material, which is part of a concert, recorded live by the radio and is released here for the first time. The concert celebrated Zach´s new book of poetry ("Northeasterly") published in 1979, and was an inspiration to this album, released a couple of years later.

  | H3B ~ SONGS, NO SONGS ABALONE 013 (Barcode: 3760199740121) ~ FRANCE ~ Jazz Recorded: 2012 Released: 2013
This is the second album by the brilliant H3BFind albums by this artist quartet, which comprises of French pianist Denis BadaultFind albums by this artist, British trumpeter Tom ArthursFind albums by this artist, French violinist Regis HubyFind albums by this artist and bassist Sebastien BoisseauFind albums by this artist. The album presents thirteen relatively short original compositions, eight of which were composed by Badault and have distinct melodic motifs (Songs), while the remaining five are improvised by the quartet (No Songs).
The music is a stunning display of modern European Jazz, which amalgamates European Classical Chamber music, Jazz tradition and Improvised Music techniques. From start to finish, every second of this music is an absolute bliss of paralyzing intensity and staggering depth.
All four members of the ensemble are obvious virtuosi. Arthurs contributes most of the melodic content, with his deeply lyrical phrasing and crystal clear sound. Badault provides the harmonic layers beyond the trumpet solos and Huby adds his orchestration to expand the overall sound. Boisseau brilliantly keeps the rhythmic undercurrents flowing with vigor and expert sensitivity, doing such a splendid job that the obvious lack of percussion is completely forgotten.
Over time countless people have asked me for a definition of European Jazz and its characteristics. Listening to this album holds absolutely all the answers: the European aesthetics, the music tradition both Classical and Folklore, the elegance and the sophistication, which creates layer upon layer of ornamentation above the basic Jazz tradition, with an outcome, which is infinitely more satisfying. Absurdly enough, despite its complexity and intricacy this music remains beautifully melodic and coherent, even at its apex of free improvised moments.
I realize that only a handful of music listeners will ever hold this album in their hands, which of course is tragic as far as our Culture is concerned, but those touched by it will hopefully remain mentally altered for lifetime. If it was up to, me I´d have a copy of this album in every music academy around the world, Jazz Department or not, to educate our future musicians where the directions should be pointing to. Alas, this is of course but a dream…

  | BODEK JANKE ~ SONG 2 NOT ON LABEL 4260014871218 (Barcode: 4260014871218) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Pop Fusion Recorded: 2019 Released: 2020
This is an album by Polish (resident in Berlin) Jazz drummer / composer Bodek JankeFind albums by this artist recorded in an international quartet setting with Namibian vocalist / guitarist Shishani VranckxFind albums by this artist, Estonian pianist Kristjan RandaluFind albums by this artist and British bassist Phil DonkinFind albums by this artist. The excellent Polish Atom String QuartetFind albums by this artist provide the string parts and world class guests: American saxophonist Bill EvansFind albums by this artist, Israeli guitarist Gilad HekselmanFind albums by this artist and German trumpeter Sebastian StudnitzkyFind albums by this artist appear on selected tracks. The album presents ten tracks, five of which are originals (two by Janke and three by Vranckx) and the rest are arrangements of Pop songs. As the title suggests, this album is a continuation of its predecessor called "SongFind albums with this title" released a couple of years earlier.
Although basically a Jazz album, the concept it presents is a mixture of inventive and ambitious arrangements of well known Pop songs and original compositions, with the emphasis on transforming the music into way more complex setting than its origins. Not surprisingly, since the leader is a drummer, the most striking feature of the music is a completely idiosyncratic rhythmic / polyrhythmic approach, which takes the music into an entire new dimension.
The instrumental performances by all the participants on this album are simply phenomenal. Bodek is the rhythmic machine, which drives the entire ensemble, but the superb piano parts and excellent support by the bassist create a most impressive ambience of pulsating / vibrating musical unity, which sparks with originality. Vranckx adds her warm and somewhat mystical vocals, which bring the depth of African music into the proceedings. The guest stars add the proverbial cherry on top, carefully trying not to steal the show and respectfully naturally expand the ambience. The string arrangements deserve a special mention, not only because they are brilliantly executed, which is hardly surprising, but mostly due to their perfect fit to the core of the music, and not just an artificial ornamentation.
Overall this is a most unusual and highly fascinating album, which requires repeated attentive listening sessions in order to truly expose its hidden treasures. It offers strikingly unusual arrangements and brilliant performances, full of aesthetic sophistication and reflecting the best European Jazz has to offer. This music should find a wide range of listeners, who are sure to enjoy its beauty, both within the circles of Jazz connoisseurs and beyond. Wholeheartedly and highly recommended!

10th album and surely the most `loved` Jethro TullFind albums by this artist album of all. Ian AndersonFind albums by this artist reaches perfection here in his ballance between rock and folk music, digging deeply into ancient traditions of the early English folk and spicing them with modern arrangements. | JETHRO TULL ~ SONGS FROM THE WOOD (THE COUNTRY SET) CHRYSALIS 190295847876 (Barcode: 190295847876) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1976 - 1977 Released: 2017
This is a 40th Anniversary Edition reissue of the tenth album by the British Prog Masters Jethro TullFind albums by this artist and another chapter in the series of reissues of their seminal albums which are being remixed to new stereo and 5.1 surround sound versions by Steven WilsonFind albums by this artist, who is doing similar projects with classic Rock / Prog albums by other artists as well. It follows a similar treatment that Wilson applied to the reissues of all (except the debut as of now) early Jethro Tull releases.
The reissue consists of three CDs and two DVDs. The first CD contains the new stereo mix of the original album (nine tracks) and seven "associate recordings", two of which are previously unreleased. Also included is a stereo version of the A side of a US single, which is left untouched. The second and third CDs include live performances recorded in the US, with four tracks originating from the Boston concert in December 1977 and the rest (eighteen tracks) from the Landover, MD concert in November 1977. These tracks were reconstructed and remixed to stereo by Jakko JakszykFind albums by this artist. The first DVD contains the album and five of the "associate recordings" remixed in two High-Resolution formats (5.1 DTS, AC3 Dolby Digital Surround Sound and in High Resolution stereo format 96/24 LPCM). Also included are the two additional "associate recordings" in High Resolution stereo format 96/24 LPCM and quad mixes of four tracks in DTS 4.0 and Dolby Digital AC3 4.0 surround sound. The second DVD includes the audio and video of the Landover, MD concert. If you are confused by all these technical terms, don´t be – it is all complete bullshit piece of hype! Basically you don´t even get the original stereo mix of the album in a CD form, but you get almost two hours of a live concert on DVD, remixed versions of the album, and a few bonus tracks, which honestly contribute very little, if anything at all.
The entire set is lavishly packaged in a digibook format, with great photos of the band, background material, the song lyrics and other goodies, which are all beyond reproach.
The group´s lineup on this album is expanded with the addition of the second keyboardist David PalmerFind albums by this artist, which turns Jethro Tull into a sextet. Ian AndersonFind albums by this artist as usual handles most of the vocals and plays the flute parts and acoustic guitar / mandolin. The lead guitar is magnificently handled by Martin BarreFind albums by this artist, the keyboards by John EvanFind albums by this artist, the bass by John GlascockFind albums by this artist and the drums by Barriemore BarlowFind albums by this artist. Anderson gets credit for all the music and lyrics, but Palmer and Barre get credit for contributing some of the instrumental themes.
Musically the album marks a significant change in the overall stylistic approach, emphasizing the Folk-Rock direction and British Folkloristic references. It is also considered the first album in the trinity of albums formed by this and the two forthcoming albums: "Heavy HorsesFind albums with this title" and "StormwatchFind albums with this title". Of course the album still firmly and consistently continues the Progressive Rock elements, which the band masterly develops regardless of the current stylistic aesthetic the specific albums deal with.
For many Jethro Tull fans this albums marks one the definitive highlights of the group´s long and flourishing career, but personally I believe everything the group created over the years was top notch and it was the listeners following fads and fashions who could not always follow the intricacies and complexity of the music Anderson whimsically weaved. A classic by any standard! Side Note As for the Steven WilsonFind albums by this artist contributions, I´m perplexed time after time why anybody being of sound mind would allow him to butcher the original material and then hype the results as spectacular. These original mixes are untouchable and anybody trying to change them is more or less re-painting Van Gogh, re-sculpturing Michelangelo or re-writing the Bible, all truly barbaric acts of disrespect.
Additionally I find his stereo mixes to be dry, artificial and deviant, badly damaging the original ambience of the recordings. Perhaps for people who are not familiar with the original sound this sounds fine, but for me it´s unbearable and sacrilegious.
In addition I find the surround sound completely redundant, hoping for years that it will go away as did quad and other industry inventions meant to earn some more money from the suckers following the trends. The whole high resolution hype is so ridiculous; in reality most people are deaf anyway and can´t tell one note from another even if it bites them in the ass and use ridiculously lo-fi equipment. In short Emperor´s new clothes, as usual, and no shame whatsoever.

  | CESAR JOANIQUET / BRICE SONIANO / KASPER TOM ~ SONGBOOK ASTROPI 1502 (Barcode: 5707471041512) ~ SPAIN ~ Jazz Recorded: 2014 Released: 2015
This is the debut album by the international trio comprising of Spanish saxophonist Cesar JoaniquetFind albums by this artist, French bassist Brice SonianoFind albums by this artist and Danish drummer Kasper Tom ChristiansenFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine compositions, six of which are standards and three are originals co-composed by the trio members.
The music is a subtle tribute to Billie HolidayFind albums by this artist, as the six standards are associated with her heartbreaking performances of these tunes. Of course the trio treats the standards only as a very loosely melodic / harmonic structure, while they improvise extensively and intensely.
These three young players have all already established quite a record in the last few years, which puts them in the top echelons of the European Jazz scene in spite of their age. Anybody listening to this album should immediately understand why, as their performances are simply stellar.
Joaniquet, when playing the melody lines, sounds remarkably close to Stan GetzFind albums by this artist, which is probably the highest compliment I personally could give any saxophone player, as I was sure until now that nobody will ever come close to Stan´s phrasing and sensitivity. Well, I have been proven wrong. When he improvises freely, he is of course in a different musical universe, so the similarity to Getz does not apply, but he still is a brilliant player.
Soniano is one of the most imaginative and expressive bassist I happened to came across lately and his work on this album is a superb example of the role of the bass in contemporary music; no longer a background support but a soloist of equal standing and importance to the other band members. His tone, technique and ability to converse with his cohorts is nothing short of miraculous.
Kasper Tom, an old acquaintance, has already captured my attention many times before and his highly unique approach to drumming, or rather playing the drums, has been a pleasure to follow through his diverse and always courageous and groundbreaking recordings.
This album is an instant classic, a case study of the "Art of the Trio" variety in the Jazz idiom; in which telepathic group improvisation and lofty inspiration take the music straight to the top of human gratification hubs. This is definitely some of the finest music that landed on my player this year, full of immense aesthetic pleasure as well as intellectual contentment. Way to go!

  | SONJA KRISTINA ~ SONGS FROM THE ACID FOLK MARKET SQUARE 109 (Barcode: 806676000265) ~ UK ~ Folk-Rock Recorded: 1991 Released: 2001
Following the demise of the legendary band Curved AirFind albums by this artist in 1976, their soloist Sonja KristinaFind albums by this artist continued her career as a solo artist, with a few attempted Curved Air reunions over the years. Following her early 1980s activity and the release of her eponymous debut album, she left the scene and hibernated for a few years, concentrating on raising her children. She returned to public appearances, first on the theatre stage and later by forming a new band, which was quite a surprising direction change for her. Coming back to the roots, Kristina and her new band performed a beautiful mix of Folk-Rock and modern Psychedelics, called Acid Folk. In 1990 Kristina reunited again with the original band members of Curved Air for a tour (which is documented on the Alive, 1990Find albums with this title album) and once the tour was over returned to her new band and recorded this, her second solo album. She also wrote all the songs for this album, which was another surprising and bold step forward. The result is a charmingly beautiful Folk-Rock album, one of the best there are but unfortunately little known. Her splendid voice is all there, as good as in the old Prog years, but in the mostly acoustic and serene setting it sounds even more perfect. It really great to see Kristina revitalize her career time after time and to be able to hear her superb voice again. Warmly recommended!

This is the third album (well third under the duo moniker but they recorded together many times over the years) by the fabulous duo of Norwegian vocalist / composer Karin KrogFind albums by this artist and British saxophonist / composer John SurmanFind albums by this artist. This time they are accompanied by Norwegian musicians: guitarist Bjorn KlakeggFind albums by this artist, vibraphonist Ivar KolveFind albums by this artist, bassist Terje GeweltFind albums by this artist and drummer Tom OlstadFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine tracks, all co-composed by Krog and Surman. The music was recorded by Jan Erik KongshaugFind albums by this artist at the Rainbow Studio in Oslo with the usual stunning sound quality.
The music is wonderful, as always, but this time completely mainstream oriented. Krog sings the lyrics of the songs in a pretty straightforward manner, and Surman, who plays mostly baritone sax and bass clarinet, soloes beautifully, but conventionally, as do all the members of the band. For Krog and Surman followers this might come as a surprise, as their work together was mostly characterized by exploring the boundaries of the Jazz idiom.
Having said that, this is still a most refined and wonderful musical experience, which offers a superb listening experience. All the instrumental performances are highly inspired and perfectly executed, and Krog’s idiosyncratic voice lost nothing of its beauty and charm over time, and she has few contenders as far as dramatic delivery is concerned.
Overall the album is a beautiful gift of music, which is always welcome from these two great Artists. Back to the roots can be truly exciting, as this album convincingly proves!

The music was recorded live at the Church of Saint Paul in Strasbourg with Minton performing the solo vocal parts, Weston playing the piano and Gary HammondFind albums by this artist playing the percussion. The twenty four piece choir called Voices From SomewhereFind albums by this artist, conducted by Mike RaffertyFind albums by this artist, includes British and French singers, among them such renowned Jazz vocalists like Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist and Maggie NicolsFind albums by this artist. The cantata is divided into eighteen tracks, eight of which are solo / duo / trio unaccompanied vocal improvisations.
The music is a wondrous amalgam of Avant-Garde vocal music, Jazz improvisation, choral Church music, Jazz & Poetry and a myriad other idioms, fused together into a powerful statement, that keeps the listener on his toes from start to finish. As much as it is innovative and extraordinary in its approach, at the same time it is deeply rooted in European sacral music, which comes up to the surface from time to time.
For people interested in vocal improvised music, this album is a true revelation of course and the solo vocal improvisations are absolutely stunning. But there is also the wonderful singing by Minton, which might be familiar to some listeners from his work with Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist, the majestic choir parts and the instrumental parts by Weston and Hammond, all performed with obvious devotion and talent.
It took me a while to get hold of a copy of this album and a web search amounted to very little artistic assessment of this masterpiece (except for a raving review by Thom JurekFind albums by this artist), which prompted me to write about this album, simply to expose some more people to its importance and beauty. With so much appalling "music" around us these days, taking a glance at forgotten gems is at least a partial solace.
For people who are open to musical adventures, this is definitely a way to go. Do yourself a favor a grab a copy, put it in a player and enjoy an interstellar ride into the unknown. This music sounds at times somewhat like the fabulous music by György LigetiFind albums by this artist, which is used in the "2001: A Space Odyssey" soundtrack, so it is definitely appropriate such a journey ;)

  | GRAHAM NASH ~ SONGS FOR BEGINNERS ATLANTIC 081227977078 (Barcode: 081227977078) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1971 Released: 2011
This is the debut solo album by British singer / songwriter Graham NashFind albums by this artist, one of the 20th Century Classic Rock icons, who is still active today. After a glorious career in the UK as a member of the legendary group The HolliesFind albums by this artist, Nash moved to the USA to join David CrosbyFind albums by this artist and Stephen StillsFind albums by this artist (and later Neil YoungFind albums by this artist) to form one of the most influential Classic Rock bands in history: Crosby, Stills & NashFind albums by this artist (and Crosby, Stills, Nash & YoungFind albums by this artist). Nash was decisively the catalyst and bonding element of these bands, with his British Cultural background, lyricism and superb feel of vocal harmony, as well as his personal manners and attitude, which was often in complete contrast to his American partners.
This album was recorded in wake of the success of the CSN&Y debut album "Déjà VuFind albums with this title" released in 1970, which prompted all four members of the band to release solo albums, all of which were superb pieces of musical ingenuity. In retrospect, however, this album and David Crosby´s "If I Could Only Remember My NameFind albums with this title" stand out as icons of the era.
The album presents eleven original songs, all written (music and lyrics) by Nash, except for one which was co-written with the British guitarist Terry ReidFind albums by this artist, an old friend and partner. Nash is supported by a formidable team of musicians, which includes vocalist Rita CoolidgeFind albums by this artist, Jerry GarciaFind albums by this artist, David Crosby and Dave MasonFind albums by this artist on guitars, Neil Young on piano, Bobby KeysFind albums by this artist on saxophone, bassist Calvin SamuelsFind albums by this artist and Phil LeshFind albums by this artist, drummers John BarbataFind albums by this artist and Dallas TaylorFind albums by this artist and numerous others.
The songs exemplify not only his exceptional harmonic and melodic qualities but also his social awareness, which is strongly present in the fabric of the lyrics, many of which would become an integral part of the protest songs sung by the young generation in the early 1970s, when lyrics were meaningful and could move mountains.
In retrospect this album is one of the absolute top achievements of the Classic Rock era, and remains completely relevant today, not losing an iota of its splendor and power over time. Almost half a Century after this music was created, it is still fresh, moving and exceedingly beautiful.
How sad that nobody makes music like this any more…

  | GRAHAM NASH ~ SONGS FOR SURVIVORS ARTEMIS 5099750850022 (Barcode: 5099750850022) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 2000 Released: 2002
This is the fifth solo album by British singer / songwriter Graham NashFind albums by this artist, one of the greatest Classic Rock icons of all times. Nash maintained a more or less steady solo career in parallel to his activity as a member of Crosby & NashFind albums by this artist, Crosby, Stills & NashFind albums by this artist and Crosby, Stills, Nash & YoungFind albums by this artist and with this album, released after sixteen long years of silence, he enters the new Millennium with rejuvenated powers. The album presents ten original songs, most written (music and lyrics) by him or co-written with long time collaborators like drummer Russell KunkelFind albums by this artist (who also plays on the album and co-produced it), Joe VitaleFind albums by this artist and others. Other players include keyboardist Matt RollingFind albums by this artist, bassist Viktor KraussFind albums by this artist, guitarists Dan DugmoreFind albums by this artist, Steve FarrisFind albums by this artist and Dean ParksFind albums by this artist and percussionist Lenny CastroFind albums by this artist. David CrosbyFind albums by this artist and Sydney ForestFind albums by this artist sing vocal harmonies.
The songs are all absolutely exquisite and mark a glorious return of Nash´s personal songwriting style as defined three decades earlier. Combined with superb instrumental work and excellent production and sound, this album is an instant classic, as was his debut album. Nash proves again that his "Englishness" prevails and his unique song weaving talent remains as strong as ever, paralleled but just a few of his peers. The songs are mostly very introspective, lyrical and melancholic, with elegant and refined acoustic accompaniment, which is his natural habitat.
The fact that the release of this album slipped almost completely under the radar, unnoticed by the critics and the fans alike, is nothing short of criminal and as usually completely tasteless. Nash and his troubadour friends still manage to produce some of the best Classic Rock the human race is capable of, and the fact that our generation is slowly dying off is of course part of the natural process of Culture disappearing, but as long as we still are able to hear great music, we should definitely let others know about it.
For all the numerous fans of Nash and his music, which missed this album at the time of its release, please do yourself a favor and grab a copy, although these are not easily available any more. You are in for a huge and delightful surprise and are about to hear Nash at his very best. Wholeheartedly recommended!

  | MILOSZ OLENIECKI ~ SONGS FOR A SOLTAN ART GROUP 021 (Barcode: 5904433795029) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2019 Released: 2021
This is the debut album as a leader by young Polish Jazz pianist / composer Milosz OlenieckiFind albums by this artist, recorded in a classic piano trio setting with bassist Pawel Zwierzynski-PioroFind albums by this artist and drummer Rafal DutkiewiczFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven original compositions, all by the leader.
The music is all based on wonderful, highly interesting and quite “different” compositions, which manage to escape the traps of typical Polish melancholy, stunning with their diversity and cleverness. They are well based in Polish Folklore, but often touch upon contemporary Classical “trickery” with uneven rhythmic patterns and even Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist’s Spanish licks, all being unmistakably Jazzy all the way. I must say that it’s been quite a while since I have heard so much originality on a Polish Jazz debut, which means that this is definitely one of the best albums landing on my desk (or in my ears) this year.
Oleniecki is also a very interesting pianist, again quite different from his colleagues, who concentrates on the delivery of his compositions rather than on playing endless arpeggios and showing off the speed of his fingers. This results on an idiosynchratic, almost minimalist at times, delivery, which leaves a lot to the listener’s imagination, rather than overloading his sensory perception.
Although I am aware of two albums Oleniecki took part in before this recording, both completely different, I am not aware of any recordings by the members of the rhythm section, who contribute magnificently to the success of this album with their highly sensitive, as well as technically proficient performances. This means that the local scene has a lot of talent still waiting to be discovered.
Overall, this a stunning and highly unusual debut album, which deserves all the attention it can get, as it certainly offers some new vistas on the rather conformist lately Polish Jazz scene, raising a hope that not all is lost despite the pandemic and other plagues. Hats off are in order and a lot of wishes for the future – please don’t keep us in suspense for too long. Brilliant stuff!

  | RAFAL SARNECKI ~ SONGS FROM A NEW PLACE ARMS 05 (Barcode: 5900238791044) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2008 Released: 2008
This is an excellent debut album by Polish guitarist / composer / arranger Rafal SarneckiFind albums by this artist, one of Poland´s most promising young Jazz musicians, recorded with his quartet which also includes pianist Pawel KaczmarczykFind albums by this artist, bassist Wojciech PulcynFind albums by this artist and drummer Lukasz ZytaFind albums by this artist (all four musicians are also members of the pianist´s Audiofeeling BandFind albums by this artist and can be heard on the superb "Complexity In SimplicityFind albums with this title" album). Guest flautist Thomas AbbottFind albums by this artist appears on one track. Sarnecki composed all the music on this album, except for one standard, and arranged all the compositions. The music is typical European Jazz, deeply melodic and well structured, with well developed harmonic patterns and rhythmic complexity. Sarnecki emerges as a major talent both as a composer and as a player on this album, with his unique voicing and delicate, yet firm grasp of the guitar´s role in Jazz. In fact this is one of very few and rare albums recorded recently, where the guitar is treated as a Jazz instrument, rather that taking the beaten track treaded by most, which leads straight to Fusion. Sarnecki picks up the Jazz guitar idiom from the place it arrived at in the 1960s and leaps over to the present, purposely ignoring and successfully eschewing any Fusion influences. The effect is truly refreshing and uplifting and enables the listener to enjoy the wonderful sound of Jazz guitar once again, as if listening to old Masters like Joe PassFind albums by this artist, where one can savor each note separately as well as the beautiful flow of many notes building up heavenly structures. The other three young musicians accompanying Sarnecki on this album are all extremely talented as well and display a high level of professionalism and sensitivity, contributing greatly to the overall success of this recording. It´s great to see that the splendor of Polish Jazz is now being continued and expanded by a third generation of players and composers, which is a good omen for the future. This is brilliant stuff and a must to all serious Jazz connoisseurs, wherever they might be, especially the guitar lovers in their ranks.

This is the second album by Polish Smooth Jazz ensemble SlowFind albums by this artist, led by guitarist / composer Tomasz KaczmarczykFind albums by this artist and keyboardist / composer Krzysztof WerminskiFind albums by this artist. They are supported by bassist Kamil PelkaFind albums by this artist, drummer Marcin RakFind albums by this artist and several additional musicians, which include two female vocalists, a string quartet and others. Pawel KonikiewiczFind albums by this artist is in charge of the musical production. The album presents ten original compositions, four of which are songs with lyrics, all co-composed by the two leaders
The music, as appropriate for the Smooth Jazz milieu, is based on catchy melodic tunes, perfectly executed by the crew, quite jazzy and yet not complicated enough to bring on a headache, in short music that, as the title suggests, can and should be enjoyed by everyone. The only "problem" with this album is that it is probably too "good" for the average Smooth Jazz listener.
There is plenty of great musicianship on this album; the nice but not cheesy compositions, the elegant instrumental parts, the vocals and the jazzy arrangements; in short it is obvious that these people are good musicians who know exactly what they are doing. It is definitely a great example of how the easy side of the Jazz spectrum can offer quality entertainment and how unjustly Smooth Jazz is often belittled by critics with narrow horizons and closed minds.
This music is meant to entertain people who like music but approach it on a less intellectual plane. There is absolutely nothing wrong with such attitude. I must admit that I had a great fun listening to this album, which is also superbly recorded and can be used as a great test device for your stereo system.

  | TOMAS SYKORA ~ SONGS FOR ORCHESTRA ANIMAL MUSIC 093 (Barcode: 8594155997213) ~ CZECH REPUBLIC ~ Pop-Classical Fusion Recorded: 2020 Released: 2021
This is an album by Czech pianist / composer Tomas SykoraFind albums by this artist, a member of The Prague SixFind albums by this artist composers group. It presents a live concert recording of a Jazz quartet with Sykora, saxophonist David FranekFind albums by this artist, bassist Tomas LiskaFind albums by this artist and drummer Roman VichaFind albums by this artist with the Prague Radio Symphony OrchestraFind albums by this artist conducted by Stepanka BalcarovaFind albums by this artist. The music includes Jazz-Classical Fusion arrangements of three pieces: a composition by veteran Czech Jazz pianist / composer Karel RuzickaFind albums by this artist, a five-part suite composed by Sykora and a suite composed by saxophonist / composer Karel Ruzicka Jr.Find albums by this artist, the son of Ruzicka Senior, based on his compositions for the album “Grace & GratitudeFind albums with this title”, compiled and arranged by Sykora.
The music is beautifully melodic and full of Eastern European melancholy, which of course is hardly surprising. Although composed by three very different composers, the amalgam with the orchestral arrangements and the spirit driving the music manages to create a coherent, well-structured musical experience, which is aesthetically pleasing. Despite the fact that many symphonic Jazz projects end up as complete failures, this project is perfectly able to defend the very idea that such joint ventures can be both viable and rewarding.
Sykora manages to create a very delicate balance between the quartet parts and the orchestral parts, which is very tricky. The transitions between the Jazz quartet performances and the Classical orchestra ones are smooth and logical and offer a natural development. Personally I admire Balcarova, who manages to make the symphonic orchestra to sound at times much closer to a Jazz Big Band than a Classical orchestra, which is very rarely achieved – beautifully done indeed.
Even the “Grace & Gratitude” material sounds way more attractive than the original album version, which sadly lacked any originality. With the new arrangements the music feels alive and comes back to its Cultural home, where it belongs.
Overall this is a wonderful album, which manages to create a consistent bridge between Jazz and Classical Music, avoiding all the kitschy traps that often imperil such efforts. It offers beautiful music, superbly arranged and splendidly executed, which should keep all lovers of such cross-genre explorations totally satisfied.
Despite the fact that the music was recorded live, it offers wonderful sound quality and separation, as usual with Animal MusicFind albums on this label releases, which are an epitome of European elegance and grace, made the Czech way – hats off!

  | JOHN TAYLOR ~ SONGS AND VARIATIONS CAM JAZZ 7772 (Barcode: 8024709777225) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 2004 - 2005 Released: 2005
This is a solo piano album by British Jazz pianist / composer John TaylorFind albums by this artist and his debut release on the Italian CAM JazzFind albums on this label label, which released all his recordings in the last in the last decade of his career up to his untimely passing in 2015. This is the first of three solo piano albums he recorded for the label, and was followed by "PhasesFind albums with this title" and "In Two MindsFind albums with this title". The music was recorded at two of the leading European studios: Artesuono (in 2004) and the fabulous Bauer Studios in Ludwigsburg (in 2005) and offers a sublime sound quality. The album presents eleven relatively short pieces, all composed by Taylor.
Taylor was blessed not only with a magic touch as a pianist, but also with immense songweaving ability, which placed him on a separate level from most of his contemporaries on the British / European scene. His melodies were always incredibly lyrical, almost sweet, but never corny, lightly touching on the heart´s chords but leaving the deepest of impressions.
As a solo piano player he managed to create a magic atmosphere of intimacy between his notes and the listener, which easily bridges over the non-trivial musical ideas, which always sounded perfectly natural in spite of their complexity. There was also always something very "British" about his music, a notion impossible to be explained by words but immediately recognizable to many British Jazz enthusiasts.
These pieces sound different every time one listens to them, sometimes merry, sometimes sad, but always beautifully embracing and immediate. In over five decades of listening to his music Taylor always managed to capture my heart unconditionally, and his solo piano recordings are amongst my absolutely favorite musical experiences.
Overall this is one of the finest Jazz solo piano trio recordings, not only in Taylor´s discography, but in Jazz history in general, which means it truly is an indispensable ingredient of any serious music collection. Absolutely essential!

  | BARBARA THOMPSON ~ SONGS FROM THE CENTER OF THE EARTH BLACK SUN 15014 (Barcode: 013711501421) ~ UK ~ Jazz-World Fusion Recorded: 1990 Released: 1991
This is a solo saxophone album by the iconic British Jazz saxophonist / composer / bandleader Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist, recorded acoustically using a single stereo microphone at the Abbaye du Thoronet in France, with Thompson playing soprano, alto and tenor saxophones. The album presents fourteen tracks, all of which are traditional tunes originating between Medieval and more contemporary times and different locations in Europe and elsewhere. The music is created as much by the saxophone sounds, as by the magnificent echo and sonic ambience of the ancient chambers of the abbey.
Thompson’s improvisations combine the diverse musical traditions and sources into a coherent continuity, which floats gently in the space between the walls of the abbey, often sounding like a continued prayer or lamentation, which invokes reflections rarely associated with music. This highly spiritual and contemplative music is one of the most unique British Jazz recordings and the fact that this album is almost completely unfamiliar to most British Jazz fans is a great pity and deserves to be rectified.
Overall, this is a beautiful and truly moving album, which deserves to be widely heard, especially today when Barbara Thompson’s music is being revitalized by numerous posthumous releases and reissues, especially since it is probably her most timeless and ageless creation. Not easy to find but certainly worth every effort!

  | JELLE VAN GIEL GROUP ~ SONGS FOR EVERYONE HEVHETIA 0098 (Barcode: 8588005257404) ~ BELGIUM ~ Jazz Recorded: 2014 Released: 2015

The album presents eight original compositions, all by Van Giel, who is also in charge of the arrangements.
The music is a collection of melodic pieces, all well within the mainstream Jazz formula, nicely arranged for the group, skillfully utilizing the brass section and full of exciting solos by all participants. Although definitely on the easy side of the Jazz spectrum, this is a very well played collection of beautiful tunes, which is a great fun to listen to. The brass arrangements could have been much more adventurous of course as they mostly follow the American school dating from the Swing Days of the 1940s, but on the other hand they have a nice nostalgic tang to it
The individual contributions by all the participants are professional and skilful, with well crafted soloing and sympathetic delivery. However the overall atmosphere is a bit too relaxed, and lacks passion and excitement, as if everybody was afraid to take any risks. Such calculated approach always bears the risk of losing the attention of the listener after a few tunes. The album´s title might have been a bit more meaningful than Van Giel initially intended.
Overall this is a nice debut effort, which portrays Van Giel as a skillful composer and arranger, but offers little intellectual challenge to more advanced listeners. Fans of melodic, rounded and pleasurable Jazz will have a great deal of fun with this album. The second album "test" should be quite interesting in this case.

  | KENNY WHEELER ~ SONGS FOR QUINTET ECM 2388 (Barcode: 602547046536) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 2013 Released: 2015
I am writing these words with heavy heart, realizing that this is an epitaph of sorts, as this is the last album by British (Canadian born) Jazz trumpeter / composer Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, recorded less than a year before his distressing death. Wheeler´s music was a continuous element of the soundtrack of my life for over fifty years and I was lucky to hear him performing live and talk to him on various occasions and of course listening to his numerous albums, always following his endeavors, from near and far. For me Wheeler always epitomized the absolute essence of Jazz: intelligence, sensitivity, superb ability to compose unforgettable melodies, or as he liked to call them "songs", and most importantly his open-mindedness and courage to step beyond the obvious and the familiar into terra incognita. It is impossible to imagine the modern British Jazz, and in fact European Jazz as a whole, without his crucial contributions, as he was always there in the eye of the hurricane of its essentially important developments.
This album presents a recording by an all British quintet, which includes two British Jazz veterans of the first post WWII generation: saxophonist Stan SulzmannFind albums by this artist (born 1948) and bassist Chris LaurenceFind albums by this artist (born 1949) and two veterans of slightly younger generation: guitarist John ParricelliFind albums by this artist (born 1959) and drummer Martin FranceFind albums by this artist (born 1964). Together they perform nine original compositions by Wheeler, which are again called "songs", as they are all beautifully melodic. The quintet expands these melodic themes into modern Jazz miniatures, with a typical British Jazz elegance, minimalism and virtuosity.
All music created by Wheeler over time became part of the absolutely classic Jazz heritage and this album is no different. Both the compositions and their treatment by the quintet are simply perfect in every respect and the listener is treated to a "final product" of the highest quality, being simply left to relax and enjoy this glorious music. Whatever one´s musical background and level of Jazz appreciation, this music is simply beyond being analyzed and its aesthetics should suffice to be recognized as a masterpiece.
Of course life will continue, as it always does, regardless of who is left behind. The collective human heritage, which has been expanded and enriched by Wheeler´s presence, will be hopefully properly remembered and cherished. Although in today´s world humanity suffers from the ever shortening attention span, the human ingenuity and culture will prevail in the long rage, provided of course that humanity manages to avoid self obliteration. Wheeler´s recordings are all beautiful gems and let´s treat them as such, today, tomorrow, forever…

This is the 2nd album by the Polish vocal duo WSPAKFind albums by this artist, which comprises of Adrianna Kafel-WozniakFind albums by this artist and Aleksandra Pura-CidyloFind albums by this artist. The vocalists accompany their vocals by playing violin and Polish folklore instruments, like the Bilgoraj suka, Plock fiddle and wspak (a viola like instrument, but with reversed symmetry). The album presents ten tracks, which are Lemko (Polish Carpathian region ethnic group) and Ukrainian folk songs, arranged by the duo and sung in local dialects.
The music is every bit as moving and enthralling as that on their debut, featuring exquisite vocal harmonies and superb instrumental support. Although the verbal message of the lyrics is lost to listeners not familiar with the regional dialects, but that does not take away the beauty of the music and the prevailing atmosphere, which is way more powerful than any verbal context.
The duo decided to explore their roots, rather than create contemporary new music, and considering the wealth of these regional traditions, they have a vast cultural zone, which is inexhaustible. As a result, we can expect more such explorations in the future, which is heartwarming.
On the purely musical plane, the vocal harmonies this duo is able to create are some of the finest one can hear, and regardless if one is a World Music buff or not, they are absolutely worth being heard, which I of course recommend wholeheartedly.
Overall, this is a brilliant album in every aspect, full of breathtaking vocal harmonies and beautiful melodies, sublimely performed by the duo and excellently recorded, presenting music for all seasons and completely universal, despite its clear Easter European roots. This is beyond recommendation!
