ASSOCIATION ~ AND THEN… ALONG COMES THE ASSOCIATION
COLLECTORS` CHOICE 647 (Barcode: 617742064728) ~ USA ~ Classic Pop

Recorded: 1966 Released: 2006

1st album by the excellent US Pop group AssociationFind albums by this artist, a sextet of gifted songwriters, players and most importantly singers, who brought the art of vocal harmony to the highest levels known in popular music. The group enjoyed some success on the US charts in the late 1960s and two of their first hits are included on this album ("Along Comes Mary" / "Cherish"), but they were way more sophisticated and creative to be considered just as hit makers. Over the years the group released a series of excellent albums, each and every one of them full of great songs, superbly performed and sung. The fact that most of their material was self penned, self played and self arranged the collective talent and ingenuity of the band members is beyond doubt. Their vocal harmonies, firmly based in the American Folk vocal tradition but cleverly adapted to the Pop / Rock climate, are a model revered and copied to this very day. There are hardly any weak songs on any of their albums, this one being no exceptions, and with six songwriters in the band they were never short of material. This is classic Pop, which still sounds perfect today! Wholeheartedly recommended!

BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST ~ AND OTHER SHORT STORIES
HARVEST 538407 ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

3rd album from 1971 by this excellent UK Prog band, which sadly never acheived the `cult` status other outfits managed to secure. Solid song-writing, great playing and superb vocals were the group`s forte througout their long and fruitful career and they surely deserve to be re-discovered.

BLEY / SHEPPARD / SWALLOW ~ ANDANDO EL TIEMPO
ECM 2487 (Barcode: 602547797117) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2015 Released: 2016

This is the 3rd album by the trio co-led by American Jazz pianist / composer Carla BleyFind albums by this artist, British Jazz saxophonist Andy SheppardFind albums by this artist and American Jazz bass guitarist Steve SwallowFind albums by this artist. The album presents five tracks, the first three being parts of a suite. All the compositions are by Bley. The music was recorded by the great Stefano AmerioFind albums by this artist and offers a sensational sound quality.

The beautifully melodic music is a superb example of Bley’s unique sense of melody and compositional aesthetics, which is her trademark since 1960 on. When she died in 2023, Bley left a vast body of compositions created in over six decades, many of which remain absolute Jazz classics.

The trio offers a tight, precise and beautifully well balanced music-making tool to present the music, complementing each other for the entire duration and exchanging lead parts in tandem. The entire presentation is minimalist and modest, with not one unnecessary note, offering a melancholic journey, full of beauty and reflection.

The trio would record only one more album together, called “Life Goes On”, which would be Bley’s final recording.

Overall, this is a beautiful, delicate piece of music, which summarizes quite faithfully her entire career, not only as performer and composer, but perhaps more importantly as an instigator and catalyst of styles and directions, far beyond her own career.

DORUZKA / WYLEZOL / BALLARD ~ ANDROMEDA`S MYSTERY
BIVAK 004 (Barcode: 8594211850018) ~ CZECH REPUBLIC ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2021 Released: 2022

This is the debut album by an international Jazz trio comprising of Czech guitarist / composer David DoruzkaFind albums by this artist, Polish keyboardist / composer Piotr WylezolFind albums by this artist and American drummer / composer Jeff BallardFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight original compositions, four by Doruzka, three by Wylezol and one by Ballard.

Doruzka emerged in the last decade as one of the most active and highly appreciated musicians on the European scene, appearing on many albums in his home country and in Poland. Wylezol is a well-established musician on Polish scene and personally one of my favorite Polish Jazz pianists, shining among a fierce competition, and Ballard is well known for playing with top Jazz musicians in the US and leading his own bands – which means this album is exploding with talent and creativity from start to finish.

The music is all surprisingly well-behaved, modern and probing but based on solid melodic themes, with both Doruzka and Wylezol always weave like magic. Quite naturally Doruzka takes upon himself most of the soloing, always brilliantly supported by the two partners, but Wylezol also contributes some impressive solo parts, which are every time incredibly creative, in addition to being in charge of the bottom bass pulsations created on synths. Ballard stays somewhat in the background and deliveries a dense, polyrhythmic pulsation behind the melodic contents, ornamenting and leading the music simultaneously.

The atmosphere created by the trio is somewhat dark and gloomy, despite the beautiful melodies, soaked in lyricism and profundity, which is at times overbearing, which means that this music requires serious listening attitude and focus, like all serious music should do. But the aesthetic values invoked by the music are certainly worth the effort and concentration invested.

Overall, this is an elegant, highly unusual album, which offers the listener a multi-layered Artistic experience, deeply rewarding and fulfilling. Not an easy encounter, but deep stuff rarely is easy, as we all know. I was truly enchanted by this music and a heartfelt thank you is offered to you, my Friends, for taking your Art seriously and sharing it with us. Godspeed!

ANAT FORT ~ AND IF
ECM 2109 (Barcode: 602527332161) ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2009 Released: 2010

This is the second album on the prestigious ECMFind albums on this label label by Israeli pianist / composer Anat FortFind albums by this artist and her third release to date. Fort is the first Israeli musician to release an album on ECM. Recorded with her regular trio with bassist Gary WangFind albums by this artist and drummer Roland SchneiderFind albums by this artist, the album presents a set of new original compositions / improvisations by Anat, who manages to create her own musical universe, unique and distinct from any other music made on this planet, quite an accomplishment for any musician today. Somewhere between modern Jazz, contemporary Classical music, late 19th Century Romanticism and Eric SatieFind albums by this artist´s Minimalism, the music of Anat Fort is like an impressionist painting, full of melancholy and lyricism and yet sparkling with color and emotion. Her music is always receptive to the listener´s mood, enabling him to discover a different facet every time he listens attentively. It sounds great in early mornings and late at night, being invigorating and soothing at the same time. Of course there is also Anat, the player, gently caressing the keyboard and masterfully applying pressure, when necessary. The rhythm section accompanies her with a kind of humility, which is inspired by respect and understanding, always there at her side, but never pushing her around. Together they are a harmonic unit, an ideal piano trio, which epitomizes Jazz more that any other combination of players known to men. And yet the album is not an easy listening experience, especially at the first attempt. As all good Art, it requires attentive and repetitive listening, slowly breaking the barrier of assimilating with the listener´s perception. It sneaks on you slowly, going deeper and deeper every time, until you are completely hooked, left helpless and fully exposed to its beauty. What bliss! In retrospect I prefer this album to its predecessor "A Long StoryFind albums with this title", which was recorded with a cast of most reputable musicians, but lacks the true personal touch of Anat´s musical true-self. Uninhibited by the presence of strong personalities she is able to express herself more fully on this album, which is all for the best. I can´t imagine any serious music lover not falling in love with this album eventually, even if it takes some effort. Therefore I urge everybody to give it a try, as you surely won´t regret it in the long run. Music of this quality is too rare to be left unnoticed!

NURIT GALRON ~ AND THEN CAME UPON US
NMC (ISRAEL) 20938 (Barcode: 7294276209387) ~ ISRAEL ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2009 Released: 2010

Almost 30 years after Israeli singer Nurit GalronFind albums by this artist recorded her brilliant album "Songs In The Middle Of The NightFind albums with this title", which included songs written to the wonderful poetry of the iconic Israeli poet Natan ZachFind albums by this artist, she returns with the same concept on this album. A brilliant set of new songs, composed by some veteran (Ilan WirtzbergFind albums by this artist) and some newer songwriters, exquisitely performed by Galron, accompanied by a sympathetic group of excellent musicians. Unfortunately the subtlety and intricate details of the poems in the Hebrew language is lost to all those listeners who lack the knowledge of our language, nevertheless the atmosphere and the quality of this great album is universal and many non-Hebrew speaking people around the globe will undoubtedly enjoy it. An instant classic!

PETER HAMMILL ~ AND CLOSE AS THIS (EXPANDED EDITION)
VIRGIN 503278 (Barcode: 5099950327829) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1986 Released: 2007

13th album by Peter HammillFind albums by this artist and another complete about-face in comparison to its predecessor SkinFind albums with this title. Here we have Hammill alone, armed only with his piano (and some help from his MIDI and sequencers), singing his heart out and performing a great set of new songs. The passing years and the experience gathered over time only emphasize his immense talent and although such solo efforts are usually quite difficult to pull through, he manages to do so brilliantly. The material seems to be less dramatic than usual, almost calm and lyrical and as always deeply intimate and personal. The beautiful lullaby “Sleep Now” crowns the entire album. It is still unmistakably Hammill, showing yet another of his many faces and unveiling another layer of his complex personality. This is classic Hammill, something none of his many fans should miss in their collection.

ALBERT MANGELSDORFF ~ AND HIS FRIENDS
MPS 4029759119616 (Barcode: 4029759119616) ~ GERMANY ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

Recorded: 1967 - 1969 Released: 2017

This is a reissue of the MPSFind albums on this label album by legendary German Jazz trombonist / composer Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist. It presents six improvised duos, each with another Jazz player, which are: Americans - trumpeter Don CherryFind albums by this artist, drummer Elvin JonesFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Lee KonitzFind albums by this artist, Hungarian born resident in US guitarist Attila ZollerFind albums by this artist and German born resident in US vibraphonist Karl BergerFind albums by this artist and finally German pianist Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist. Four of the compositions are credited to the members of the duo performing them and two are credited to Mangelsdorff.

Mangelsdorff was one of the Father figures of the German and then European jazz for decades. Since the late 1940’s he and his older brother Emil MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist led numerous ensembles, always on the vanguard of the ever-changing Jazz scene. He was one of the greatest trombone players in the history and single-handedly changed the status of this instrument from a background / support role to the front line position, proving that when in hands of a virtuoso player the trombone can be as fascinating any other instrument.

By the end of the 1960’s Mangelsdorff gradually moved towards Free Jazz and concentrated on playing in intimate settings like the duo and later even on completely solo performances. His revolutionary solo trombone album “TrombirdsFind albums with this title” (recorded 1972) was the first solo trombone album. Albert Mangelsdorff died in 2005 at the age of 77, leaving a tremendous legacy of recorded music, as revolutionary and groundbreaking as one can only expect from a true Jazz Master.

This album, recorded between 1967 and 1969, presents the early Mangelsdorff duo recordings with some of the most important Jazz musicians of the period. Each and every one of these duo performances is completely different and yet they all create a cohesive musical vision of a genius. Not for a casual Jazz listener, but a delight for connoisseurs with a refined Jazz ear, this album also brought forth the "Art of the Duo" idiom, often used to describe European Jazz duo recordings of the highest class.
Side Note
The legendary German MPSFind albums on this label (Musik Produktion Schwarzwald) label, founded by Hans Georg Brunner-SchwerFind albums by this artist (HGBS) in 1963, first as SABAFind albums on this label Records and later on from 1968 as MPS Records, was the most important independent European record label, which had an enormous contribution to the development of European Jazz. For many years MPS cooperated with the legendary German producer / author Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, my Friend and Mentor, whose visionary approach and open-mindedness brought the crème de la crème of the Jazz (in the broadest meaning of the word) musicians from all over the world to the label. Between 1963 and 1983 MPS produced about five hundred albums, many of which are among the most important Jazz recordings on this planet.

In 1983 the MPS catalog was sold to UniversalFind albums on this label, which sadly resulted in all those artistic treasures to almost disappear from the face of the earth – a situation not only tragic but culturally criminal. Universal reissued a part of the MPS albums (probably 128 titles) on CD between 1999 and 2011 under the "Most Perfect Sound Edition" moniker.

Since 2008 the German Promising MusicFind albums on this label label released some of the MPS recordings, but at a very slow pace.

In 2014 the German company Edel AG bought the MPS catalogue from Universal and released a series of 25 MPS albums on CD with a new slipcase graphic design, which brought all those excellent albums back to life. In 2015 Edel AG started to record and release new albums under the MPS moniker. In 2016 Edel AG released a series of 10 classic MPS albums on CD, which were beautifully remastered and re-packaged, presenting the original artwork and liner notes, as well as new liner notes and photographs. An obvious labor of love, these reissues are what the MPS catalogue truly deserves. This project was continued in 2017 with another series of 10 classic MPS albums released on CD. In later years some new reissues were released sporadically.

Over the years many SABA / MPS albums were reissued in Japan, which is often the only available source for these albums today, but that is a story in itself.

ANDRZEJ PRZYBIELSKI / CUSTOM TRIO ~ ANDRZEJ PRZYBIELSKI & CUSTOM TRIO
POLONIA 273 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2001 Released: 2001

This is the second album by legendary Polish Jazz trumpeter Andrzej PrzybielskiFind albums by this artist with the Custom TrioFind albums by this artist, which consists of saxophonist Janusz SmykFind albums by this artist, bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist (collectively known as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist – Poland´s most respected Free Jazz rhythm section). The music was recorded live at a coffee house in Bydgoszcz, a town where Przybielski lived and which is an important center of Polish Free Jazz / Improvised Music activity. They perform seven original compositions, all composed by Przybielski except one co-composed with Tymon TymanskiFind albums by this artist, another legendary Polish Jazz figure and the pioneer of Yass. Sadly the sound quality is truly sub-standard, almost certainly captured on a portable cassette recorder, which hampers the otherwise sublime musical experience.

The music is of course simply magnificent, presenting the essence of Free Jazz at its absolute apex, performed with flair and complete dedication. Przybielski is at top form and his solos soar straight to heaven. The young and relatively little known Smyk also plays like there is no tomorrow, standing firmly shoulder to shoulder with the Maestro. The fabulous rhythm section drives the entire vehicle forward ceaselessly with outstanding energy and drive. In retrospect there are very few other Polish Jazz recordings of this kind, which can be considered similar in quality and importance.

Just a decade after this recording was made Przybielski died, neglected, lonely and forsaken. His talent was never recognized and appreciated during his lifetime, his complex personality and behavioral abnormalities estranged him from society and of course the establishment. Like so many great Artists the recognition, albeit marginal, was absolutely too little, too late. Therefore this album is another important piece of the limited legacy Przybielski left us to remember him by and of course an essential piece of Polish Jazz history.

JAZZ IN BRITAIN 52 ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1971 - 1980 Released: 2023

This archival 2CD album accompanies the book by Duncan HeiningFind albums by this artist of the same title, published by the inexorable Jazz In BritainFind albums on this label label / publishing house, which continues, to the delight of all British Jazz lovers, to bring to light previously unreleased or long forgotten gems from the depths of private archives. The book, subtitled “Six British Jazz Composers”, presents biographies of six pivotal British Jazz figures and the album brings music illustrating their vast achievements. All the music was previously unreleased and all originates from BBC broadcasts.

CD1 presents recordings by Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist from 1972, Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist from 1971 and Barry GuyFind albums by this artist from 1971.

CD2 presents recordings by John MayerFind albums by this artist from 1972, Keith TippettFind albums by this artist from 1971 and Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist from 1980.

The collective lineup of the musicians performing herein is a magnificent compendium of the who’s who of the British Jazz scene at its most dramatic development period. All the music, except that by Westbrook, originates from the early 1970s, and Westbrook’s activity at that time was also absolutely essential, which means that the editors of this album did not have access to any of his early 1970s material, which would have fitted perfectly.

The lineups include an intimate trio, two septets and three large ensembles, and stylistically it moves between delicate lyrical compositions, via orchestral works, Jazz-World Fusion experiments and Free Jazz / Avant-Garde explorations, all this happening at the same time slot, which portrays the British Jazz scene perfectly. I vividly remember the abundance of talent and feverish activity at the time, which meant that selecting an event to go to was often an impossible choice.

This album also emphasizes the importance and incredible support by the BBC to the development of music (Jazz but also Rock) at the time. None of this music herein would be available to us today if not for those regular broadcasts and the sublime recording quality of those guys in white coats…

Overall, this is a tremendous piece of British Jazz history, absolutely essential to all the fans, and of course a perfect companion to the book, which is also wholeheartedly recommended! British Jazz forever!

Although there is little new to be discovered here, the sheer virtuosity and raw energy displayed by Winter´s guitar playing and vocal delivery make it a good enough reason to listen to this music time after time and I´m sure that if anything else from that period will be discovered in the future, it will be sensational as well. Winter´s fans need no encouragement to grab this beauty instantly and those heretics still unfamiliar with his gospel should definitely jump on the wagon this time. They surely don´t make that kind of music these days, so get going! Brilliant stuff!
