CONTEMPORARY QUARTET (OLES / MAHALL / TIBERIAN / OLES) ~ PLAYS MUSIC OF BACEWICZ, KISIELEWSKI, KOMSTA, LUTOSLAWSKI, PENDERECKI
NOT TWO 744 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 2002 Released: 2002

This is an excellent album by four European Jazz musicians: German clarinetist Rudi MahallFind albums by this artist, Romanian pianist Mircea TiberianFind albums by this artist and Polish brothers: bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist (collectively known as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist). They are collectively called Contemporary QuartetFind albums by this artist and on this album they perform nine pieces based on compositions by five Polish contemporary Classical Music composers: Krzysztof PendereckiFind albums by this artist, Stefan KisielewskiFind albums by this artist, Grazyna BacewiczFind albums by this artist, Witold LutoslawskiFind albums by this artist and Marzena KomstaFind albums by this artist. Two additional compositions are by Bartlomiej Oles.

The album beautifully emphasizes the proximity between contemporary Jazz and contemporary Classical Music, combining the written parts and improvised parts completely naturally to such extent that the listener is not able to distinguish between them. Of course the idea is to express the symbiosis between the two musical idioms, rather than show them side by side.

The majority of the music (five compositions) is by Krzysztof Penderecki, who is undoubtedly the most "revisited" contemporary Classical composer by the Polish Jazz musicians. In the liner notes Oles Brothers refer to the legendary recording back in 1971 of a concert initiated by my friend Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, which involved the Free Jazz Orchestra consisting of the top Free Jazz musicians of the day performing the composition "Actions" written by Penderecki, an innovating and daring concept at the time. Over time such interactions became gradually more common, as this album proves.

This is demanding music, which requires attentive listening and open-mindedness, but as usual in such cases is very rewarding. Connoisseurs of Jazz-Classical Fusion and Avant-Garde musical excursions should find this most interesting. Although recorded almost 15 years ago and somewhat forgotten, this music deserves to be re-discovered and listened to, as it obviously is absolutely ageless.

CUSTOM TRIO ~ BACK POINT
NOT TWO 736 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2000 - 2001 Released: 2002

This is the second album by the Polish Custom TrioFind albums by this artist, which consists of saxophonist Krzysztof KapelFind albums by this artist, bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist (collectively known as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist – Poland´s most respected Free Jazz rhythm section). Saxophonist Maciej SikalaFind albums by this artist guests on one track. In between the recording of their debut album and this one, the trio also recorded a couple of albums with the legendary trumpeter Andrzej PrzybielskiFind albums by this artist, one of them live with a different saxophonist (Janusz SmykFind albums by this artist). The album includes eight original compositions, five of which were composed by Bartlomiej Oles and the remaining three by Marcin Oles.

For people familiar with the previous recordings by the Custom Trio will find this album quite surprising, as it is much more "docile" then any of their former work. The music is low-key, contemplative and very melodic, the rhythm section is relaxed and almost "conventional" and the saxophone improvisations, which are the focus of the album, although very Free Jazz in spirit, are all non aggressive and rounded. The overall sound and ambience of the album are very Coltranesque, which of course brings this album to a much wider potential audience, well beyond the Free Jazz buffs and into the modern mainstream.

The individual statements are of course exceptional, especially those by Kapel, who emerges on this album as one of the most able Polish Jazz modernists. But of course the Oles Brothers firmly testify their amazing interplay and cooperation, which is as usual the driving force and solid ground upon which the saxophone solos are based. The album is full of virtuosity from start to finish and should satisfy even the sternest Jazz connoisseurs. It is a pity this album is rarely mentioned among the best Polish Jazz recordings originating from the first post Millennium decade, as it truly deserves. What a pity they did not continue to record any more such wonderful music.

CUSTOM TRIO / ANDRZEJ PRZYBIELSKI ~ FREE BOP
POLONIA 226 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1999 Released: 2000

This is probably the best album recorded by the recently deceased Polish trumpet virtuoso / composer Andrzej PrzybielskiFind albums by this artist, who remains largely unknown to most Jazz aficionados even in his native country. An eccentric and outsider, Przybielski was blessed with an incredible talent, which unfortunately was recognized only by very few connoisseurs.

This studio recording, obviously well planned and relaxed, allows the great trumpeter to relax fully and play his heart out to the fullest, accompanied by excellent musicians worthy of his company, which are called Custom TrioFind albums by this artist. The trio consists of saxophonist Krzysztof KapelFind albums by this artist and the Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist: bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist – Poland´s Free Jazz most notable rhythm section. Together as a quartet they perform nine original compositions, five of which were composed by Przybielski and the remaining four by Bartlomiej Oles.

The performances are absolutely stellar and the album is one of the best Polish (and definitely not only Polish) Jazz albums ever recorded. As much as that sounds overblown, if you can listen to this music, you´ll be instantly convinced. Any other player placed opposite (or side by side) a genius like Przybielski is in a great danger of appearing pale. Luckily Kapel is capably to blow like only a few can, matching everything that Przybielski plays with a vengeance. This is simply unbelievable music, which stands easily opposite such legendary sessions as the early Ornette ColemanFind albums by this artist with Don CherryFind albums by this artist. In short this is essential Jazz, which can only be played by a very small group of exceptionally gifted players, which is definitely the case here. Brilliant!

MAGNOLIA ACOUSTIC QUARTET ~ BOOZER
FOR TUNE 0003 (Barcode: 5902768701029) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2011 Released: 2013

This is a (formal) debut album by Polish Jazz ensemble Magnolia Acoustic QuartetFind albums by this artist, which comprises of saxophonist Szymon NidzworskiFind albums by this artist, pianist Kuba SokolowskiFind albums by this artist, bassist Mateusz DoboszFind albums by this artist and drummer Patryk DoboszFind albums by this artist. The album presents a live recording of an extended lineup of the ensemble, which adds two slightly older and better known Polish Jazz musicians: trumpeter Tomasz DabrowskiFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Maciej ObaraFind albums by this artist. The music includes seven pieces, six of which are originals (three by Sokolowski, two by Obara and one by Dabrowski) and one is by the contemporary Polish Classical Music composer Witold LutoslawskiFind albums by this artist.

The music played by these incredible musicians covers the areas of modern European Jazz, Avant Garde and Free Jazz, firmly embracing the past and clearly pointing out the future. Based on pre-composed themes, the group´s music develops into lengthy collective and individual improvisations, which are achieved through mutual respect and collaboration, but also reflect the incredible individual talents. The overall effect is simply stunning and the fact that this music is created by such young musicians is simply unreal. The ensemble portrays the ideal balance between the soloists and the rhythm section. The pair of the Dobosz BrothersFind albums by this artist is quite likely to become the new brotherly Polish rhythm section following in the steps of the legendary Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist.

Quite naturally the most impressive solo spots are reserved for the two guests, especially Dabrowski, whose contributions here are simply stellar and again clearly point out his path to stardom and his position as the future top Polish Jazz trumpet player. One of the most exciting moments of this album is the trumpet / drums duet, which is simply divine, and which should come as no surprise in view of the fact that Dabrowski recorded an entire trumpet / drums album recently with American drummer Tyshawn SoreyFind albums by this artist, also released on the For TuneFind albums on this label label.

Considering the fact that this music was recorded live, which eliminates any studio trickery and results in "what was played is what you hear", all that was stated above is even more impressive. After listening to the album several times the music keeps getting better and better and Magnolia Acoustic Quartet simply emerges as one of the best new arrivals on the Polish Jazz scene in the last few years.

This album presents the young Polish Jazz scene at its best: vigorous, daring, original, inventive and hellishly talented. These are the musicians that will lead the scene in decades to come, when the older generation retires or sadly is no longer with us. Judging by this album and many others that pop up recently like mushrooms after rain, we have absolutely nothing to worry about the shape of things to come!

MURRAY / OLES / OLES ~ CIRCLES LIVE IN CRACOW
NOT TWO 749 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2003 Released: 2003

This is a live recording by a trio comprising of American saxophonist / clarinetist David MurrayFind albums by this artist and a Polish rhythm section: bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist (collectively know as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist). They perform seven pieces, six of which are original compositions (four by Bartlomiej Oles and one each by Marcin Oles and Murray) and one is a composition by Ornette ColemanFind albums by this artist.

Murray, one of the pillars of American Free Jazz / Improvised Music and the founding member of the World Saxophone QuartetFind albums by this artist, is obviously one of the most interesting, albeit atypical, figures originating on the American scene. He discovered the strength of the European Jazz scene rather early and performed and recorded extensively in Europe over the years, eventually moving to live in Europe.

The music presents a rather unusual situation where the world-famous guest Artist agrees to perform music mostly composed by his younger partners, which of course testifies both as to Murray´s open-mindedness and the strength of the music of Oles Brothers. The music itself, although based on composed themes, is very open and spacey, as appropriate for modern Jazz. It floats and flirts with Free Jazz, but remains ultimately structured and coherent, which makes it a wonderful listening experience.

Although Murray is obviously the central soloist on this album, there is plenty of soloing by the bass and the drums, which explains why the Oles Brothers were considered already at the time, relatively early in their career, as the best Polish Jazz rhythm section, a position they still steadfastly hold to this very day.

The level of interplay between the musicians on this album and the overall intensity of the performances can easily serve as a proof that the inferiority complex many of European Jazz musicians suffer from in relation to their American colleagues is completely baseless and absurd.

OLES / PIERONCZYK / OLES ~ GRAY DAYS
NOT TWO 726 ~ POLAND ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

Recorded: 2001 Released: 2001

This is an early album by the Polish brothers: bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist (collectively known as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist) recorded in a trio setting with saxophonist Adam PieronczykFind albums by this artist. The album presents 10 original compositions, five composed by Bartlomiej Oles, four by Marcin Oles and one co-composed by them both.

It is very apparent that the Oles Brothers, despite their traditional role as a rhythm section, approached the Jazz idiom head on from the very start, envisioning themselves, both collectively and individually, as complete musicians, rather than just performers, with very special emphasis on composition. The music on this album includes some beautifully melancholic melodic themes, which although executed in the Free Jazz spirit, fully convey the depth of the compositional skills.

Of course they are also brilliant performers and their playing on this album is, as usual, stunning from start to finish. Combined with the power of expression of Pieronczyk, who is definitely one of the most significant Polish mid-generation Jazz saxophonist (alas sadly tragically underappreciated), the music on this album is extremely powerful, even if kept mostly low key. The emotional restrain builds up a tremendous tension, which is the underlying characteristic of this album, making it a very potent listening experience.

Although recorded and released sixteen years before I finally managed to lay my hands on a copy, this album takes no prisoners and sounds completely up to date today, revealing a mature approach and exquisite technique already at the very early stages of their career. Such music is definitely too good to lay about so I urge everybody to get a copy of this album before it gets completely out of print and you will have to pay an arm and a leg to get one. Highly recommended!

OLES BROTHERS ~ ALONE TOGETHER
AUDIO CAVE 2019/013 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2019 Released: 2019

I can hardly think of a more appropriate way to wrap up (well almost) the Polish Jazz releases for the year 2019 than by writing about this album by two of the most prominent Polish Jazz musicians: bassist / composer Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and his twin brother, drummer / composer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist (collectively known as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist), who also happen to be my friends. The album consists in fact of two separate mini-albums (on two separate CDs), each presenting a solo album: "Lapidaria" by Marcin with six original solo bass compositions and "The Drum Tower" by Bartlomiej with a five-parts suite for solo drums composed by him. The album celebrates the twentieth anniversary of their activity on the European Jazz scene and was recorded at the MaQ Records Studio and engineered by Michal RosickiFind albums by this artist with spectacular sonic quality.

In the early days of their musical journey Marcin and Bartlomiej already released solo albums ("Ornette On BassFind albums with this title" and "FreeDrum SuiteFind albums with this title" respectively), which makes this album into a symbolic closing of a creative circle. In spite of the extremely difficult naked environment, their solo music is full of intrinsic melody even if not explicitly articulated. They are always able to tell a "story" with their music, which keeps the listener mesmerized for the duration.

Anybody listening attentively to these two mini-albums should be easily convinced that the Oles Brothers turned their skills and experience in time into an Art Form. Their essence outgrew the basic rhythm section role they so splendidly demonstrated on the many records they took part in during the last two decades, and eventually produced a couple of visionary musicians, who, whether separately or together, are always able to achieve the highest levels of spiritual and emotional expressionism.

The intimate music that this album offers is obviously less spectacular than most other albums released this year, but its depth easily defends its importance and significance. Minimalism is so much more difficult to be understood and appreciated, and yet alone or together Oles Brothers are iconic musicians and their statements, individually and collectively, remain the core of European Jazz aesthetics.

It makes me happy to hear a new album by the Oles Brothers after a period of relative inactivity, as it is able to fill my heart with joy and my mind with gratitude for their music and the inspiration it generates. Thank you, as always!

OLES BROTHERS ~ CHAMBER QUINTET
FENOMMEDIA 003 (Barcode: 5907604327036) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 2004 Released: 2005

This is an interesting recording, initiated by Polish Improvised Music heroes, brothers Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist (bass) and Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist (drums) collectively known as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist, which involves also three additional musicians: American cellist Erik FriedlanderFind albums by this artist, American bassoon player Michael RabinowitzFind albums by this artist and Belgian oboe player Emmanuelle SomerFind albums by this artist. They perform together as a quintet eleven pieces, nine of which were composed by Bartlomiej Oles and two by Marcin Oles.

The music presents an innovative idea to create Improvised Music, using Classical chamber instrumentation, ambience and to a certain extent also methodology. As farfetched and bizarre as the idea might appear at first, this album proves that is can be done and the result can genuinely offer some perfectly valid and beautiful music. The pieces present a wide range of musical ideas, some quite melodic, others more atmospheric, but always interesting and even fascinating.

The level of musicianship on this album is truly outstanding. All the participants possess virtuosic abilities and utilize them with astounding effectiveness. The same applies to their cooperation and the overall ensemble functionality. It is very difficult to believe that this is indeed Improvised Music, as it sounds completely coherent and synchronized at all times. To an innocent listener unaware of what is being played, this music might sound similar to contemporary Classical Music, with a twist, and after all it might be considered as such.

The album is a great example of the unlimited possibilities that music offers to the listeners, when created by daring and ground-breaking Artists. Assimilating many different elements, not only from Jazz and Classical Music, but also World Music, especially Jewish and Middle Eastern themes that are very clear to a trained ear, this is a true cross-genre excursion definitely worth experiencing. Satisfaction guaranteed!

OLES BROTHERS ~ DUO
FENOMMEDIA 007 (Barcode: 5907604327074) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2008 Released: 2008

This is a bold and unusual album by Polish Jazz heroes, brothers Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist (bass) and Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist (drums) collectively known as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist, which presents them as a duo without a participation of any additional musicians. The music consists of ten original compositions: six composed by Marcin Oles, three by Bartlomiej Oles and one being co-composed by them both.

The bass and drums, universally accepted as the rhythm section which stands behind the vast majority of all Jazz activities, is almost never considered being able to produce music on its own, which is evident by almost complete lack of recordings featuring bass / drums duets. In fact there are quite a few solo bass or solo drums albums; some of them even seminal recordings, but in contrast almost no bass / drums outings. The fact that Oles Brothers decided to record such dramatically unusual album is another evidence of the fact that they are definitely much more than just a brotherly rhythm section, but also talented composers, virtuosic performers and Jazz innovators.

Contrary to the expectations which a bass / drums album might suggest, the music is actually deeply melodic. Marcin states the melody line switching between arco and pizzicato and then the duo expands it by improvising and adding a rhythmic line, which often not only supports the melody by also introduces a secondary melodic theme. Both players remain attentive at all time to each other and the rhythmic patterns change often during one piece. The music is delicate, but distinctive, making a statement at all times; there are no fillers or redundant idle moments, its pure music from start to finish, intense, fascinating and deeply moving.

Of course the individual contributions are hardly surprising to anyone familiar with the Oles Brothers output so far; their reputation as Poland´s most formidable rhythm section is once more attested herein. It´s much more than just superb technique, but more importantly their mutual respect, intelligence and sensitivity, which makes them a marvelous team.

Music connoisseurs should really try out this album, as it is definitely a masterpiece of minimalism, which has very few equals, not only on the Polish Jazz scene, but worldwide. This is a rare gem indeed!

OLES BROTHERS ~ ONE STEP FROM THE PAST
FENOMMEDIA 014 (Barcode: 5907604327142) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2011 Released: 2016

This is a beautiful album by the Polish Jazz duo comprising of two brothers: bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist, collectively known as the Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist. Although they are, what in the Jazz world is known as a "rhythm section", and not just any rhythm section but by far one of the top European rhythm sections at that, but in fact they are much more than just a rhythm section, often creating the notion that they are a two man orchestra. Of course they also write music, very exquisite music, they run their own record label and if all that does not suffice, they are a couple of wonderful human beings, which I am proud to call my friends.

The music presented on this album was recorded at the invitation of the BBC and intended for the prestigious "Jazz on 3" program. It was recorded at Studio S4 of Polish Radio in Warsaw and presents eight pieces, three of which were composed by Marcin, two by Bartlomiej, another two co-composed by both brothers and one is a standard.

For people unfamiliar with the Oles Brothers phenomenon it is quite impossible to imagine the depth and richness of the music this duo is capable of creating just by playing with each other. Although it might seem logical that the bass would play the melody and the drums the rhythm, nothing can be taken for granted with these guys and role reversal is perfectly normal for them. Of course there are many virtuosic bassist and drummers around, but there is hardly any bass / drums duo which comes even near to the level of inventiveness, imagination, creativity and elegance of this particular duo.

In many respects this music belongs to the moment it was created. Improvised music is often very impressive when performed live, but loses almost all of its value and meaning when it is recorded and made into an album in order to be reproduced repeatedly. Sometimes it is painful to listen to such music when it completely fails to reproduce the magic moment of its creation. The Oles Brothers have a great gift, which enables them to create music which sounds breathtakingly beautiful when played live, but also transforms perfectly into the recorded medium, as exemplified here. They are quite a singularity in that respect.

Many Polish Jazz musicians managed to create wonderful albums over the years, but only very few ones manage to maintain the same level of achievements and such consistency like the Oles Brothers, both as a duo and individually. Therefore each and every one of their albums is simply a must to every serious Jazz / Improvised Music connoisseur, this one included of course. Although this music is half a decade old at the time of its release, it is a perfect example of timelessness and intrinsic aesthetic values that exist outside of the fourth dimension´s scale. All I have to say is a humble thank you!

OLES BROTHERS ~ OTHER VOICES OTHER SCENES
FENOMMEDIA 010 (Barcode: 5907604327104) ~ POLAND ~ Soundtracks

Recorded: 2004 - 2009 Released: 2010

This is a double CD compilation of works by Polish Jazz musicians: bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist, collectively known as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist. It includes thirty six short pieces of music, which are parts of eight separate soundtracks created to serve as music for theater, film and animation, which were premiered between 2004 and 2009. The entire music was composed and performed by the duo, with four guest musicians participating on some of the tracks. They both play several other instruments apart from the obvious bass / drums, including keyboards, guitar, marimba and others.

Polish Jazz connoisseurs are of course well aware of the Oles Brothers achievements, especially in view of their status as the most formidable Polish Jazz rhythm section, which played over time with a plethora of local and international musicians. However this album focuses more on the music composed by them rather than on its execution. Of course Oles Brothers were also the composers of part of the music played on their earlier albums, but this album really puts their excellent compositional skills right in the focus of the listener´s attention.

Stylistically the album covers a very wide range of different genres / influences / atmospheres, which encompass contemporary Classical, World Music, Jazz of course, Ambient and minimalistic / incidental music. It is often very melodic and even when there are no clear melody lines present the overall atmosphere is serene and inviting.

Music, which is meant to serve as a soundtrack is not really required to stand alone, when separated from its visual / theatrical component. But in rare occasions it does possess an intrinsic value, which allows it to be fully meaningful and complete on its own. The music included on this album belongs to that category, which of course is quite remarkable. But on the other hand it is definitely not for a casual listener, and as such has a limited accessibility.

With this album Oles Brothers firmly establish their position on the contemporary Polish music scene, beyond their initial Jazz association. They are definitely a musical force to be reckoned with and one can only hope that their future project will be every bit as ambitious and meaningful as those presented on this album.

OLES BROTHERS ~ SPIRIT OF NADIR
AUDIO CAVE 2017/008 (Barcode: 5905669566353) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2013 Released: 2017

This is an album by the Polish Jazz duo consisting of twin brothers: bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist, collectively known as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist. It presents an eleven part suite co-composed by both brothers, recorded in 2013, which waited to be released for four years. Since the turn of the Millennium Oles Brothers earned the status of an iconic phenomenon on the Polish Jazz scene, releasing over 25 albums in various configurations, mostly in small formats like solo, duo and trio settings, with music encompassing a wide cross-genre amalgam of Jazz, Improvised Music, Jazz-Classical and Jazz-World Music Fusions. Their consistent excellence and purely artistic conviction puts them at the very top of world level musicians active today.

"Spirit Of Nadir" is a journey into the cultures of Near and Far East, with strong Middle Eastern influences of Jewish and Arabic roots, but also reaching as far as India and Indonesia, weaving an exquisite tapestry of sounds and rhythms which emphasizes the universality of music as part of the human nature. Seemingly restricted instrumentally and harmonically by the use of just bass and drums, the duo manages to create a universe of music, which sounds complete and coherent, ignoring completely the inherent limitations and presenting music which lacks nothing and is able to deeply move the listener and deliver an aesthetic experience; a wonderful example of quality being clearly more important than quantity.

Undoubtedly this is highly spiritual music, which requires from the listener not only his undivided attention, but also openness towards unusual (to most) harmonic and rhythmic structures. Although World Music has penetrated the rather limited and condescending Western aesthetics, it is still very much a niche scene, and therefore every effort, especially such wonderfully executed as this one, which brings music from diverse spheres together is worthy of praise and admiration.

It is very satisfactory to hear this wonderful music, which I have been familiar with almost since its conception and had the pleasure to hear it performed live, finally found its way to be released on CD by the upcoming Polish label Audio CaveFind albums on this label, which makes its presence known with increasing strength. Well done as usual and of course warmly recommended to all connoisseurs of great music everywhere on this planet!

OLES BROTHERS & JORGOS SKOLIAS ~ MAGGID
FENOMMEDIA 013 (Barcode: 5907604327135) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2015 Released: 2016

This is the second album by the Polish trio comprising of brothers Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist, who plays bass and Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist, who plays drums, collectively known as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist, and vocalist Jorgos SkoliasFind albums by this artist. The trio is also referred to as SefardixFind albums by this artist, a name they adopted from the title of their debut album together, recorded four years earlier.

The album continues to pay tribute to the Sephardic Jewish culture, by using several Ladino songs originating in the Judeo-Spanish tradition, but also using Greek, Balkan and other Mediterranean sources. All the songs were selected, arranged and transcribed for double bass by Marcin Oles, except for one song which was composed by him. All of the lyrics are traditional except for three cases where Skolias wrote Greek lyrics.

Although the trio is seemingly limited to use just the rhythm section to accompany the vocals, in fact Marcin´s bass and Bartlomiej´s drums and percussion instruments create a full orchestral accompaniment, with both the bass and the drums also playing the melodic parts. Together with the vocals the full sound of the trio is incredibly expressive and lacks absolutely nothing.

The virtuosic instrumental parts and the extraordinary vocals are completely unique and breathtaking. The music offers not only a respectful treatment of the tradition but also a very up to date arrangement and execution, creating a masterpiece of Jazz-World Fusion, with has very little competition. It is the instrumental minimalism and the vocal mannerism and theatrics which work together so well, creating this powerful result.

Skolias is a completely one of its kind vocal artist, who feels perfectly at ease singing vocals or improvising vocalese, with his deep hoarse baritone, which is simply charming. There is nobody else on the Polish scene remotely close to Skolias and his great talent gets here a full exposure, like almost never before.

The Oles Brothers refuse to stick to the role of Poland´s most formidable Jazz rhythm section and keep producing incredibly diverse music both individually and as a team. Sefardix, which is just one of their multifaceted activities, is certainly one of the most impressive.

The long wait for this album certainly paid off in full. This is one of the most impressive Jazz-World Fusion albums ever recorded in Poland, which is known for the incredibly high level of musical output. This is a kind of album which should sell millions of copies all around the world, in an ideal world; alas we don´t live in an ideal world…

An absolute must, don´t even dare to think twice!

OLES BROTHERS & JORGOS SKOLIAS ~ SEFARDIX
FOR TUNE 0013 (Barcode: 5902768701135) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2011 Released: 2013

The Sephardic Jewish Culture, with its heavenly beautiful music, poetry and above all personal warmth must be one of world´s best kept and deepest secrets, especially so in Eastern Europe, which was dominated for centuries by the Ashkenazi Jewish way of life and of course Ashkenazi Jewish Culture. In Poland, which was the center of Eastern European Jewish life in pre-Holocaust period, Sephardic Jews (like my Family) were an oddity and in most cases lost their roots along the way, adopting the Yiddish language and the Ashkenazi customs and forgetting the Ladino language and the Sephardic traditions. But of course Sephardic Jews and their Culture continued to thrive in Greece, Turkey, North Africa and in the Holy Land. For centuries Jews lived in two parallel universes with almost no contact between these two cultural spheres. But absurdly the monsters, who brought the Holocaust on the Jewish People, managed to pay no attention to any such cultural differences; the Greek Jewish community, mostly from the ancient town of Salonika, found themselves in cattle wagons on their way to Auschwitz before the horror was over. Apparently Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews burned much in the same way.

This album, created by Poland´s most revered Jazz rhythm section: bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist, collectively known as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist, with vocalist Jorgos SkoliasFind albums by this artist, obviously of Greek origin, pays homage to the Sephardic Culture, based on traditional Ladino and Greek songs, except for one piece which is an original composition by Bartlomiej Oles, adopted and re-invented by the trio. All the texts were translated / transformed into the Greek language and Skolias performs them mixing many vocal techniques, from declamation, vocalese, chanting, whistling, murmuring and up to almost straightforward singing, always marvelously.

The album creates a wonderful atmosphere of intimacy and minimalism, which engulfs the listener slowly but insistently, breaking cultural barriers by its immediacy and intrinsic charm. I have no idea if this charm works as well on people who have never been exposed to this kind of music, and I hope it does, since the overall effect is simply magical. Skolias takes this music into further areas, like Greek Rebetiko, mainly due to his idiosyncratic expressionism, which emphasizes the affinity of all Middle Eastern cultures. Oles Brothers prove again their outstanding ability to keep their open-minded approach, regardless of the stylistic circumstances. Marcin plays some heartbreaking bow passages and amazing plucking solos and Bartlomiej plays percussion as if he was born on the desert planes of North Africa.

By all means this is one of the most original albums recorded in Poland since many years, a bold statement which is not afraid to take risks and break new ground. The idea for this project was initiated by Miron ZajfertFind albums by this artist, the artistic director of the New Jewish Music Festival in Warsaw, who deserves much credit, as does the For Tune label for recording and releasing this music, saving it for posterity. Jewish Culture connoisseurs are definitely grateful!

OLES BROTHERS / ROB BROWN ~ LIVE AT SJC
FENOMMEDIA 008 (Barcode: 5907604327081) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2008 Released: 2009

This is a trio album by Polish Jazz heroes, brothers Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist (bass) and Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist (drums) collectively known as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist, joined by American saxophonist Rob BrownFind albums by this artist, one of the most prolific and active NY scene Free Jazz players. The album comprises of seven original compositions, the opening three being parts of a three-part suite. All the music was composed by Bartlomiej Oles except for one tune composed by Marcin Oles. The album was recorded live and is a part of the "Live Series" of releases on the Oles Brothers owned FenommediaFind albums on this label Records.

The music is typical contemporary Jazz, which allows for a large degree of freedom and extended improvisation but stays within the pre-composed melodic framework. Brown dominates the album with his very busy way of playing, and the rhythm section supports him marvelously, easy changing tempi back and forth between medium to fast, like true professionals.

Although the cooperation between the musicians and the individual statements are without doubt all excellent, personally I enjoy more the moments when the rhythm section plays alone rather than when the saxophone is up front. That laborious wall of sound effect, which is typical of most American Free Jazz players and which unfortunately did not evolve an inch in the last few decades, is already exhausted as far as I am concerned. I mean is anybody able to express more emotion in their music by imitating the prophets like John ColtraneFind albums by this artist or Albert AylerFind albums by this artist or Eric DolphyFind albums by this artist? Brown belongs to a large group of American improvisers, which simply is unable to rejuvenate the idea and move forward. Therefore during the moments when Brown plays sparingly and melodically, as he does on the one before last track, he is truly excellent but when he erupts into the extended, aggressive improvisations, my defense mechanism is fully deployed.

All things considered this is a fine modern Jazz album, mostly due to the excellent work done by the rhythm section, which emphasizes the fact that the language of Jazz knows no geographic or political boundaries and it´s all up to people to make music together regardless of their origins. Not very innovative and sometimes a bit unnerving, but something Free Jazz fans should definitely enjoy immensely.

OLES BROTHERS / CHRISTOPHER DELL ~ KOMEDA AHEAD
FSR 2014/01 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2013 Released: 2014

It is extremely difficult to communicate anything truly innovative about Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artist´s music. Since the tragic death of the Godfather of modern Polish Jazz over four decades ago, his enigmatic compositions have been the subject of a vast number of recordings in Poland as well as other countries, where his music was discovered. These recordings cover every Komeda compositions in every possible instrumental settings and stylistic sub-genre, ranging from works of pure genius to unspeakable pastiches. Therefore one should not be surprised by the fact that Jazz connoisseurs approach every new recording of Komeda´s music with extreme caution.

Bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and his twin brother drummer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist have paid their dues on the European Jazz scene since the onset of the 21st Century, slowly climbing to the well earned position of one of the top European Jazz rhythm sections. But they are also both formidable composers and activist, spinning a web of international contacts and collaborations, many of which resulted in recording of a succession of fabulous albums over the time. One of such meetings was with the German vibraphonist / composer Christopher DellFind albums by this artist, which led to this Komeda project to be commissioned by the Berliner Jazzfest in 2011, where it was debuted in November of that year.

The concept behind this project was to show Komeda as a composer of complex, expanded musical forms, as reflected by the four long tracks on this album, as well as a weaver of concise magical melodic miniatures, as those presented by the four short tracks. These two facets of Komeda´s work have never been presented earlier as complimenting each other.

The actual performance of the music is also completely unique and innovative. First there is the overall low key, low volume, completely acoustic approach, with each and every note being a crucial piece of the complete puzzle. Secondly there is the minimalism, a reserved approach stating that "less is more" and emphasized by the intrinsic inner calmness of the vibraphone, probably the most delicate and intimate instrument at our disposal. There is not a single note here that sounds redundant or unnecessary. And lastly there is a gorgeous freedom of expression, which is the predominant factor of this music, unrestricted by melody, harmony or rhythm. The Komeda fans will have no trouble to hear the familiar themes in this music, but at the same time they will be able to hear those themes stretched and expanded into previously untraveled territories.

It seems that Oles Brothers & Christopher Dell managed to achieve the goal of discovering and exposing more of the eternal beauty and charm hidden in Komeda´s music, and we, the listeners should be grateful for such discoveries. This music, with its elegance and eloquence, is a superb example of what Culture is all about.

Side Note: The above are the original liner notes, which were supposed to accompany the music as initially intended. However, as it often happens, the somewhat convoluted fate of this album´s release resulted in selecting different liner notes sometime along the line. Since I deeply love the music, as evident in my writing above, I feel that publishing them here is appropriate.

OLES BROTHERS / CHRISTOPHER DELL ~ GORECKI AHEAD
AUDIO CAVE 2018/005 (Barcode: 5905669566544) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 2017 Released: 2018

This is an album by twin brothers: bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist, collectively known as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist, who are synonymous with the Polish Jazz since the break of the 21st Century, recorded with German vibraphone virtuoso Christopher DellFind albums by this artist, with whom they cooperate since many years. As the title suggests, this album is dedicated to the trio´s interpretations of music by the great Polish contemporary Classical Music composer Henryk GoreckiFind albums by this artist. The album presents eleven of Gorecki´s pieces, performed by the trio, and is appropriately entitled "Gorecki AheadFind albums with this title", following the trio´s previous album "Komeda AheadFind albums with this title" dedicated to the music of Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artist.

The first public performance of some of the pieces present on this album happened just a day before this music was recorded, during the trio´s concert in the Nozyk Synagogue in Warsaw, which was the opening concert of the 4th Singer Jazz Festival, of which I am the Artistic Director. Towards the end of that concert, which presented the material recorded on "Komeda Ahead", I was suddenly notified that I need to go and open another concert in another venue, which would make it impossible for me to properly close the trio´s concert. In an instantaneous decision I asked the trio to just go on and play until my return, which they graciously, albeit with some surprise, agreed to, and of course since the Gorecki project was to be recorded the next day, they indeed continued the concert playing the music one can now hear on this album. I was then taken by the Chief of Security of the Festival rushing across Warsaw ignoring red lights and travelling against the traffic direction, opened the other concert and safely returned to hear some closing moments of a Gorecki piece and then had the pleasure to formally close the concert with the entire audience participating in a standing ovation, which lasted for many minutes.

Of course this album is anything but another typical Jazz-Classical Fusion project. Oles Brothers and Dell are way beyond the usual triviality and shallowness that often characterizes such projects and their attitude towards the music of other composers, both in the case of Komeda and now Gorecki, is to completely absorb and naturally transform their music into a new dimension, which becomes as much theirs as it originally was the composer´s. Even in a case when the listener is familiar with the original music, the trio´s interpretations take him into a completely new universe, where the original music is completely altered harmonically and rhythmically.

This album is another masterpiece, which expands the Oles Brothers´ and Christopher Dell´s long list of achievements, which covers the entire rich tapestry of contemporary Jazz, completely ignoring genre borders. The music is demanding and requires attentive listening, but at the same time it is immensely rewarding and aesthetically fulfilling, something that Culture should always strive to do. I feel happy to be able to call these musicians my friends and following their careers has been always an absolutely delightful and educational experience.

This album is an absolute must to every sophisticated Jazz, but not only, connoisseur, who looks for deeply emotional and intellectual experience every time music is in the air! Superb stuff!

OLES BROTHERS / ANTONI GRALAK ~ PRIMITIVO
FOR TUNE 0118 (Barcode: 5906395808212) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2016 Released: 2016

This is the debut album by Polish Jazz trio comprising of bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist (collectively known as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist) and trumpeter Antoni GralakFind albums by this artist, known as member of such Polish cult ensembles as Free CooperationFind albums by this artist, GraalFind albums by this artist, YesheFind albums by this artist, Tie BreakFind albums by this artist and Young PowerFind albums by this artist. The album presents ten pieces, three of which are based on traditional folkloristic motifs, one is a collective improvisation, two are composed by Gralak, one is composed by Bartlomiej Oles, one is co-composed by Marcin Oles and Gralak and two are compositions by others.

The music, as the title suggests, is a very fascinating journey exploring early, or so called "primitive" music, which naturally deals with basic human emotions, like sadness and joy, as reflected in contemporary musical environment of Jazz and Improvised Music. The folkloristic themes originate mostly from Africa - the cradle of Man – but venture also as far as Tibet and Mexico. The modus operandi in these sessions relays completely on the ability of the three musicians to converse and express their "primitive" emotions towards each other, based on whatever thematic sub-context was chosen for each of the pieces.

This cooperation with Gralak takes the Oles Brother back in time to the period when they cooperated closely with another Polish trumpet legend, Andrzej PrzybielskiFind albums by this artist, who died six years ago (in 2011). Therefore the setting of trumpet accompanied only by a rhythm section is not a new concept to them. Gralak, accidently (or maybe not) shows many similarities in his playing and general attitude towards music to those displayed by the late Przybielski. Even the tone of his trumpet brings immediate fond memories of Przybielski´s work. In any case it´s great to see the older generation of Polish Jazz Trumpet School alive and kicking.

This album is very intimate and does not pretend to dazzle or swap anybody off their feet. It does however propose a serious re-examination of what the essential elements of music are and what can be considered as superficial worthless deception that often pretends to be the real thing. Oles Brothers have always taken their music seriously, and this time is no different.

Listeners willing to explore new (albeit in fact very old) territory will find this album fascinating in every respect: the musical choices, the candor of the attitude and of course the perfection of execution. Fans of the trumpet should expect a revelation, and if this is the first album they hear with Gralak on it, they will surely try to find his other work. Overall wholeheartedly recommended, as usual with Oles Brothers projects, when buying an album is completely risk-free!

OLES BROTHERS / THEO JORGENSMANN ~ ALCHEMIA
HATOLOGY 646 (Barcode: 752156064626) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2006 Released: 2007

This is the fourth album by Polish Improvised Music heroes, brothers Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist (bass) and Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist (drums) collectively know as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist, with the German clarinetist / composer Theo JorgensmannFind albums by this artist. The music was recorded live at the legendary Alchemia club in Krakow, which in the first decade of the new Millennium served as one of the epicenters of the Polish Avant-Garde scene, and includes five original compositions: two composed by Jorgensmann, one each by Marcin Oles and Bartlomiej Oles and one co-composed by them both.

This music was recorded just two months after the live recording that produced the "Live In Poznan 2006Find albums with this title" album and covers mostly the same material and yet these two dates are quite dramatically different. The Alchemia concert is a pinnacle of this trio´s cooperation at the time, summarizing a process of development from the first encounter to the close intimacy achieved herein. The relaxed and contemplative atmosphere of this session and the expanded versions of the compositions, which are present on this album, create a magic moment which was encapsulated for eternity. The special ambience of the club itself might be also responsible for the extraordinary amalgam achieved here by the trio.

This music is also much more "organized" than that presented on the earlier recordings, with a clear emphasis on the compositions and structures rather than the on improvised parts that dominate the earlier recordings. Of course there is plenty of improvisation and wonderful expanded solo sections, but the music, at all times, stays within clearly defined melodic and rhythmic patterns, even at the very climax and up-tempo frenzy. This wonderful balance between the freedom of improvisation and the structure, mostly imposed by the rhythm section, is absolutely stunning.

Of course the individual abilities of these extraordinary musicians are at full display throughout this album, as always. It´s worth to listen to this album several times, each time concentrating on just one of the participants in order to be able to fully absorb their individual contributions. But of course only the glorious threesome achieves the full synergy, and the proper way to listen is to try and absorb this synergy into our brains.

This is surely one of the finest examples of the European Avant-Garde scene at the time it was recorded and a true gem of an album, which has but a few equals. The fact that the prestigious Swiss Hat HutFind albums on this label label decided to include it in its roster is surely an acknowledgment of eminence, which in this case was fully earned. The hearsay has it that Hat Hut has another Oles Brothers session in their vaults that remains unreleased – now that is a crying´ shame!

OLES BROTHERS / THEO JORGENSMANN ~ DIRECTIONS
FENOMMEDIA 002 (Barcode: 5907604327029) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2004 Released: 2005

This is the second album by Polish Jazz musicians / composers, brothers Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist (bass) and Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist (drums) collectively know as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist, with the German clarinetist / composer Theo JorgensmannFind albums by this artist. Recorded just one year after their debut recording "MiniaturesFind albums with this title", it signifies the incredible rapport these musicians are able to create together. The album presents nine original pieces, six of which were composed by Bartlomiej Oles, one by Marcin Oles and two by Theo Jorgensmann.

The music is a logical and linear continuation of the ideas that were first developed on the preceding album, deepening the trio´s coherence and spiritual unity. There is no doubt that this music is significantly more "unchained", with a lot of breathing space and bolder experimentation, expanding the boundaries of the trio´s telepathic creative process. But miraculously the new degree of freedom does not impair the warmth, intimacy and melodic contents this music so wonderfully amalgamates. It is a superb example of the "less is more" approach, where each single note counts and subdued energies penetrate deeper than volume.

Of course there are plenty of energetic and spirited moments, when the music reaches ecstatic levels, but even then everything happens in perfect harmony and intrinsic tidiness, which often is completely lost in the heat of Improvised Music created by others. The idea to play relatively short pieces with changing motifs, as opposed to expanded improvised passages lasting for long periods of time, works excellently herein. These great musicians do not need to prove anything and obviously play the music enjoying the aesthetics of creation a new expression of their inner selves, rather than showing off their talents.

This is definitely one of my favorite Polish Jazz albums, which is after all hardly surprising, as my work as a producer with the Israeli clarinetist Harold Rubin is in many respects quite similar. The clarinet produces a heartwarming sound, which is simply irresistible and in the hands of a Master becomes an extension of the human voice. Combined with an intelligent and extremely musical rhythm section, like in this case, the result turns into some of the most moving and poignant music one can experience.

This is a classic album in every respect, which should be included on the short "must hear" list anywhere on this planet where people still listen to meaningful music. The depth of the experience this music generates is of course very personal, but I can hardly imagine a music connoisseur left untouched by it. Respect!

OLES BROTHERS / THEO JORGENSMANN ~ LIVE IN POZNAN 2006
FENOMMEDIA 006 (Barcode: 5907604327067) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

This is the third album by Polish Improvised Music heroes, brothers Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist (bass) and Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist (drums) collectively known as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist, with the German clarinetist / composer Theo JorgensmannFind albums by this artist. The music was recorded live and includes eight original compositions: four composed by Bartlomiej Oles and two each by Marcin Oles and Jorgensmann.

The music presents a wonderful Free Jazz / Improvised Music setting, full of great melody lines, exciting improvisations, fiery displays of virtuosic abilities and telepathic conversation between the musicians involved. Jorgensmann is a very dynamic, but non-aggressive player, who sounds wonderfully melodic even if he improvises freely, which creates an exceptionally easy-going atmosphere, rarely present on Free Jazz albums.

The Oles Brothers are famous for being the best Polish rhythm section in Free Jazz / Improvised Music environment and this album clearly shows why. They are not only technically perfect but more importantly superbly musical, and as a result the music doest not offer a soloist supported by a rhythm section setup but rather a trio of equally important parts playing together as one.

Large part of the material included here is a live version of the same material recorded by this trio on their previous album "DirectionsFind albums with this title", which was recorded in a studio. Those two albums are a splendid manifestation of how music is influenced by circumstances, the presence of an audience and so on. Basically these two albums should be combined into a double CD release – perhaps when reissued at some later date.

Overall this is one of those instant "classics" which simply leave nothing out and are pieces of Culture captured for posterity. Wonderful listening experience from start to finish!

OLES BROTHERS / THEO JORGENSMANN ~ MINIATURES
NOT TWO 748 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2003 Released: 2003

This is the first album by Polish Jazz musicians / composers, brothers Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist (bass) and Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist (drums) collectively know as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist, with the German clarinetist / composer Theo JorgensmannFind albums by this artist. They recorded several more wonderful albums as a trio following this debut recording. The album presents ten pieces, two of which are contemporary Classical compositions by Polish composers Jan KrenzFind albums by this artist and Artur MalawskiFind albums by this artist, five are by Bartlomiej Oles, two by Marcin Oles and one by Theo Jorgensmann.

The music is an amalgam of Jazz tradition with Improvised Music, contemporary Classical forms and the individual statements by the musicians involved. Gently floating between melodic themes and improvised sections it is all about elegance, sophistication and mutual respect, that between the musicians and their audience and that between the musicians themselves. The term "miniatures" is perhaps not quite descriptive of the contents in the strict meaning of the term, but applies to the minimalism and tenderness of these pieces, which are able to create an impressive impact in contrast to their seemingly limited scale.

Jorgensmann is able to join the legendary telepathic bond existing between the twin brothers and expand it into three-way collaboration, which of course is quite extraordinary. Together the trio carries out like one multilayered voice, which performs not only with remarkable unity but also seemingly without any limitations. Such close musical encounters are always a source of great joy and inspiration.

This album is an instant "classic" of the European contemporary Jazz / Improvised Music collection, which deserves an honorable place in any serious music library and is definitely worth a serious investigation by serious music connoisseurs.

FSR 2016/04 (Barcode: 5905279364103) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

This is the fifth album by the trio which unites Polish Jazz and Improvised Music twin team of bassist / composer Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer / composer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist, collectively known as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist, and German clarinetist / composer Theo JorgensmannFind albums by this artist. The music included on this album was recorded in 2010 and originally intended for release as their second album on the Swiss Hat HutFind albums on this label Records HatologyFind albums on this label Label, but for a variety of reason was delayed and eventually released on the Polish FSRFind albums on this label label. It includes eleven original compositions, three of which are by Marcin Oles and four each by Bartlomiej Oles and Jorgensmann.

The album marks a culmination of a ten years period during which the trio recorded and performed together intensively. As a result their work here is remarkably coherent and organic and the musical unity they demonstrate is truly marvelous. The music flows flawlessly between solo, duo and trio statements, with the rhythm section being elevated to a status of frontline performers. The telepathic conversation between all three musicians is staggering, as usual, and the trio becomes a complete, undividable unit.

The album also marks a path towards more composed and less freely improvised music, which has characterized the trio´s progression over time. That does not mean of course that the music is restrained in any way, but the composed structures are plainly hearable and strictly adhered to, notwithstanding the enormous degree of freedom applied in the performances themselves.

In retrospect this is definitely a brilliant closing chapter to the trio´s activity, which was certainly one of the most interesting European Jazz units at the time. Of course for Oles Brothers this was definitely a period of establishing their position as one of the most talented leading European rhythm sections in parallel to their ever growing career as composers.

It is great to have this album finally available, thanks to the persistence of the Oles Brothers and of course Maciej KarlowskiFind albums by this artist of FSR, who finally managed to bring this saga to a happy end. The album includes the liner notes by American critic Art Lange, which were written for the intended release on Hatology in 2011, so even that piece of the puzzle was saved. Enjoy!

OLES BROTHERS / THEO JORGENSMANN / CHRISTOPHER DELL ~ FRAGMENTS & MOMENTS

Recorded: 2007 Released: 2012

This is a limited edition album celebrating the tenth anniversary of musical cooperation between Polish Jazz musicians: bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist, collectively known as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist and German clarinetists Theo JorgensmannFind albums by this artist. The album also features the German vibraphonist Christopher DellFind albums by this artist and together as a quartet they present eight original compositions: four of which are credited to all quartet members, two are by Jorgensmann and one each by the Oles brothers.

The album follows the pattern set by the three earlier albums recorded by the Oles Brothers with Jorgensmann, but is also somewhat more "conventional" in a way, with clear melody lines and beautiful serene atmosphere, which turns the listening to this album into a truly relaxed experience. Jorgensmann plays beautifully, as always and the rhythm section accompanies him with superb sensitivity, with the bass taking the lead from time to time as well. Dell is the least dominant participant, which is pretty understandable considering the long and established understanding between the other three musicians, but his solos are perfectly suitable for the music as is his accompaniment behind the clarinet.

Overall this is another example of the great music the Oles Brothers are always involved with, and a document of a fruitful musical cooperation between European musicians. Full of great music and perfect delivery this album should satisfy even the sternest Jazz connoisseurs and provide a listening experience worthy of being revisited.

OLES BROTHERS & PIOTR ORZECHOWSKI ~ WATERFALL
AUDIO CAVE 2020/011 (Barcode: 5908298549094) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2019 Released: 2020

This is the debut album by a "dream come true" Polish Jazz piano trio, which combines the forces of the brilliant rhythm section comprising of twin brothers Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist on bass and Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist on drums (collectively known as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist) with one of Poland´s most idiosyncratic, expressive and open-minded pianists Piotr OrzechowskiFind albums by this artist. It is therefore not surprising that the expectations from the music produced by this trio reach the zenith as far as Polish Jazz scene is concerned.

As the subtitle of this album ("Music Of Joe Zawinul") discloses, the subject of the album is the music composed by Austrian composer / keyboardist Josef Joe ZawinulFind albums by this artist, who left Austria in 1959 and moved to where Jazz "was happening", soon to become one of the most prominent musicians on the American scene, playing with Cannonball AdderleyFind albums by this artist and then Miles DavisFind albums by this artist, before forming the revolutionary ensemble Weather ReportFind albums by this artist and later Zawinul SyndicateFind albums by this artist.

Despite his success in America, Zawinul was in many respects a tragic figure as his European background and musical tradition never truly allowed him to integrate within American Jazz. Over the years he composed a superb body of music that attested to his European foundations, which was never fully understood by his fellow musicians at the time. Therefore the recognition of the European spirit in the music of Zawinul, which is fully recognized and openly stated by the creators of this album, offers an important historical and intellectual testimonial beyond the musical layer. This approach leads of course to a completely novel and unprecedented interpretation of Zawinul´s music, dominant to such extent that most music listeners familiar with these compositions in their original recorded form will probably not recognize these compositions easily (if at all) on this album.

As a result, the listeners are exposed to a completely new depth and beauty of Zawinul´s compositions, a presentation which deserves a highest respect for its ingenuity and boldness, qualities that are not surprising in case of Oles Brothers and Orzechowski.

The performances are of course absolutely stellar, with every single note and sound perfectly placed within the musical kaleidoscope. The clarity of the sound and the total involvement of these three musicians is absolutely phenomenal, standing apart from almost everything else one can find on record elsewhere. It seems that the magic touch of Oles Brothers and Orzechowski combined becomes not only a sum of their sublime qualities but rather their product

A word of warning for listener´s expecting anything like what Zawinul´s music sounded originally – this album demands a completely different level of involvement, concentration and open-mindedness.

Of course this is an immediate favorite as far as I am concerned, and as the year (dreadful 2020) nears its most welcome ending, this album jumps straight into the small heap of top albums of the year. It is a true revelation and I feel proud to be able to call the makers of this magnificent music my Friends. Thank you, as always!

OLES BROTHERS / BARTOSZ PIESZKA ~ KOMEDA AHEAD
NOT ON LABEL ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2021 Released: 2021

In 2013 Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist, i.e. bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist, recorded the “Komeda AheadFind albums with this title” album with the great German vibraphonist Christopher DellFind albums by this artist. Jumping eight years forward, the “Komeda Ahead” project was revived, this time with Polish vibraphonist Bartosz PieszkaFind albums by this artist, and a tour by that trio was commemorated by a limited “special tour edition” CD, which is a kind of “remake” of the prior recording. The new recording includes six compositions by Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artist, all of which are also present on the aforementioned album.

It is of course quite natural to compare the two recordings, but honestly that would completely miss the point of the music. Each of the Oles Brothers projects is so completely unique, that every performance they give, and I have had the pleasure to be present at many of those, is entirely different, and in this case we have a case of participation of two different musicians, so a priori any comparison would be futile.

As I have stated repeatedly, Komeda’s music has been abused so many times by Polish Jazz musicians, that over time I have developed an allergy to Komeda related projects, with only a very few exceptions, and of course Oles Brothers are exceptional in every sense, so they are on the shortlist.

Pieszka is a highly educated and experienced musician, but most importantly he is able to create an intimate rapport with the Oles Brothers, which is the basis of the music they create together, on this album or any other album they recorded. The trio treats Komeda’s music with respect and obvious reverence, as appropriate, and the minimalist approach leaves the listener to connect the dots in his mind. As a result, this album stands completely on its own right, as continues the exceptional recorded legacy of the Oles Brothers, even if it’s just a tour “memento”.

Overall, for the many Oles Brothers followers, this album is a must in their collection, and for the Polish Jazz fans, this is a wonderful example of how Komeda’s music should be treated; respectfully, imaginatively and aesthetically. Thank you for the music and for many years of Friendship!

OLES BROTHERS / CHRIS SPEED / SIMON NABATOV ~ WALK SONGS
FENOMMEDIA 004 (Barcode: 5907604327043) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2005 Released: 2006

This is a great album recorded by Polish Jazz musicians: bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist, collectively known as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist, with the American saxophonist Chris SpeedFind albums by this artist and Russian (living in Germany) pianist Simon NabatovFind albums by this artist. Together, as a quartet, they perform nine original compositions, seven of which were composed by Marcin Oles (who is the formal leader of this session) and two by Bartlomiej Oles.

The music is firmly based in the Jazz tradition, seemingly quite "conventional" melody based modern Jazz, but upon careful listening the complexity and intrinsic Freedom become more and more apparent as the album progresses from one tune into another. Both Speed and Nabatov play some excellent solos and contribute to the general quartet sound, which is glued together by the rhythm section. The overall atmosphere is reminiscent of the work by mid-period John ColtraneFind albums by this artist quartet, which of course is the best model any Jazz musician could strive to achieve.

The tunes use often the specific "walking" bass outline, which is perhaps what Marcin Oles had in mind when he devised this project. But regardless of any intensions, the resulting music is simply some of the finest European Jazz created since the turn of the 21st Century. All four of the quartet members combine their individual power of musical expressions to create a result that is greater than the sum of its ingredients, which is always a wonderful experience. This kind of music shows clearly that music can be sophisticated and complex and be accessible to a diverse group of Jazz connoisseurs.

Like all the other albums by the Oles Brothers, this album emphasizes their talents as composers, in addition to their abilities as players. The ambitious decision to play and record their original music almost exclusively is one of their trademarks and as a result we can all enjoy the wonderful music they are able to weave in their minds. All we can do is raise our hats in a "thank you" gesture.

OLES BROTHERS & DOMINIK STRYCHARSKI ~ KOPTYCUS
AUDIO CAVE 2022/001 (Barcode: 5908298549384) ~ POLAND ~ Avant-Garde Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2019 Released: 2022

This is the debut album by the Polish Jazz trio comprising of twin brothers: bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist (collectively known as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist) and recorder player Dominik StrycharskiFind albums by this artist, who also uses electronics. The album presents seven original compositions inspired by Coptic music.

As usual with the projects by Oles Brothers, the music goes way beyond what is considered as Jazz mainstream, and always combines elements of improvised music with a thematic inspiration, which in this case is the music of the early Coptic Christian tradition. Originating in Alexandria, Egypt, the Coptic Christianity spread into the entire North Africa and later also to the Holly Land, with beautiful Coptic churches built in Jerusalem and Nazareth, which of course I know very well. It is only natural that Coptic music is based mostly on early Middle Eastern musical tradition and is very different from the European Christian musical tradition.

The recorder is obviously an ideal instrument to be used to re-visit the two millennia old musical tradition, for many reasons. First it is one of the oldest instruments known to man, second it is closely associated with the Middle Eastern musical tradition, thirdly it is one of the most spiritual instruments out there and lastly it is naturally and historically way more suitable for improvisation than for playing a precisely defined melody. The music on this album exemplifies the above points all too well. Strycharski sounds like a time-traveler sitting on the banks of ancient Alexandria port, sending his lament over the waters and desert sands. The Oles Brothers support him with a mixture of Middle Eastern rhythmic patterns and free time improvisation, together creating a magic chant, which is simply fascinating.

It is truly astounding to see / hear the Oles Brothers reinventing themselves time after time with each new project. As someone who had the opportunity to hear them perform live many times, they still manage to take me by surprise every time, this being no different. Originally this project was commissioned by the Music Of Faith – Music Of Peace Festival and its artistic director Miron ZajfertFind albums by this artist, and thankfully it was now released on record, to be enjoyed for posterity.

Overall, this is a highly unusual and deeply spiritual piece of human ingenuity, which offers a superb listening experience, unlike most other things one can hear on record. Far beyond classification, this is simply Music in the most universal meaning of that Artform, which deserves to be heard, and which perhaps can heal some of the misery we are all exposed to lately. Respect, my Friends, as always!

OLES BROTHERS / MIKOLAJ TRZASKA / JEAN-LUC CAPPOZZO ~ SUITE FOR TRIO +
FENOMMEDIA 001 (Barcode: 5907604327012) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2003 Released: 2005

This is the first album released on the FenommediaFind albums on this label label, owned by Polish Jazz musicians: bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist, collectively known as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist. It also features the iconic Polish Jazz saxophonist / clarinetist Mikolaj TrzaskaFind albums by this artist, who was a member of a trio with the Oles Brothers at the time and the excellent French trumpeter Jean-Luc CappozzoFind albums by this artist. Together, as a quartet, they perform eight original compositions, five of which were composed by Bartlomiej Oles, one by Trzaska, another one by Marcin Oles and Trzaska and the remaining one is credited to all four musicians.

The music is a wonderful strain of modern Polish Jazz, which flourished again since the beginning of the 21st Century, revitalized by a new generation of excellent and gifted young players, who were not only well schooled but also shared a passion for the music and were completely original and unstoppable. The three Polish Jazz representatives on this album are just a tip of the proverbial iceberg.

Although structured and pre-composed, this music displays a tremendous amount of freedom, both in form and content. Trzaska, one of the founders of the Polish Yass a decade earlier, is a born rebel and shuns conventions of any sort. This album presents a rare opportunity to actually hear him play somewhat restrained and well tempered, but always beautifully expressive and emotional. Cappozzo also contributes some wonderful freely improvised passages, always just right for the occasion. It is for the rhythm section to play the role of the musical compass and lead the music to safe shores. Together the quartet performs simply magnificently, in a spirited and intelligent way, which balances perfectly between the written notes and the freedom of expression.

These are four excellent musicians, a fact which is apparent immediately, and as an ensemble they function as a cohesive unit, which delivers unusual and interesting music, keeping the listener on his toes from the first note to the last. This music maintains its charm and remains untouched by time, always worth being revisited.

OLES BROTHERS / KENNY WERNER ~ SHADOWS
FENOMMEDIA 005 (Barcode: 5907604327050) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2005 Released: 2006

This is a superb album recorded by Polish Jazz musicians: bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist, collectively known as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist, with the great American pianist Kenny WernerFind albums by this artist. Together, as a classic piano trio, they perform eight original compositions, seven of which were composed by Bartlomiej Oles and one by Marcin Oles.

Werner is an ideal partner for the Oles Brothers, as he one is of very few American pianists, who combine the Jazz tradition with modernism and are ready to step outside of the stuffy norms which keep most of American Jazz within the conceptual prison of mainstream.

The Oles Brothers also combine the very same qualities; on one hand the respect and love towards the Jazz tradition and canon but at the same time a continuous drive to discover new forms and ways of expression, which will expand the genre´s horizons. The full compatibility is immediately apparent and the resulting music is amongst the best of the Oles Brothers achievements.

The music is based on solid melodies and typical piano trio approach to improvisation, which features extensive piano solos and intense accompaniment with occasional bass / drums solos. Werner is wonderfully lyrical, even when the notes he produces are distant from the melodic themes and enter the Free realm. The rhythm section is with him at all times, warmly supportive and intelligently sympathetic. Overall the album is a delight to all piano trio connoisseurs, and ranks among the true minor classics of that Jazz category.

Considering how well this trio sounds it is a pity that the Oles Brothers did not record with Werner again – perhaps this can be remedied, hopefully soon. Of course it would be most interesting to hear them with other pianist of similar status as well. Wholeheartedly recommended!

BARTLOMIEJ OLES ~ FREEDRUM SUITE
NOT TWO 754 ~ POLAND ~ New Age, Relaxation & Meditation

Recorded: 2004 Released: 2004

This is a solo drums album by Polish Jazz drummer / composer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist recorded using a plethora of percussion and other instruments. It presents an extended twelve-part suite, which gave the album its title and two more original compositions, all by Oles.

Bartlomiej Oles is familiar to Polish Jazz followers as the other half of the Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist team, which includes bassist / composer Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist. At the time this album was recorded, Marcin Oles released his solo bass album called "Ornette On BassFind albums with this title", which could be seen as a companion to this album in the collective Oles Brother discography.

Drum solo albums are a rarity, which of course makes perfect sense, as the limitation of percussive instruments to create melody and harmony mostly confine their presence to being a part of the rhythm section. But evidently some drummers are able to overcome the limitations and utilize the drums as a solo instrument able to create a diverse and surprisingly vital palette of sounds and Bartlomiej Oles is certainly one of those few.

The music on this album should not be vied in the Jazz context, but rather more as contemplative / ambient music, which could be used as a background for meditation and solemn contemplation. When accepted as such, it presents a beautiful sonic soundscape, which is aesthetic and emotionally relaxing.

This album is certainly not oriented towards a wide range of music listeners and is mostly suitable for open-minded and adventurous listeners who like Far Eastern World Music inspirations and meditative music. Very interesting!

BARTLOMIEJ OLES QUARTET ~ ELEVEN PHRASES – LIVE IN CSK
NOT ON LABEL ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2023 Released: 2024

This is an album by Polish Jazz drummer / composer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist, recorded in a quartet setting with saxophonist Bartlomiej PrucnalFind albums by this artist, vibraphonist Bartosz PieszkaFind albums by this artist and the leader’s twin brother, bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist. The music was recorded live and presents three original compositions by the leader, with the central piece being an eleven-parts suite, which last for almost fifty minutes.

Following the musical path of the Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist, as they are collectively often referred to, both together and individually, since their debut recordings in 1999, i.e. for the last twenty-five years, has been one of the most profound experiences on my Polish Jazz quest during that period. With over three dozen albums to their credit, their highly diverse output, which spans Free Jazz / Improvised Music, Jazz-World-Fusion, and many other, often difficult to characterize experiences, is definitely one of the most impressive achievements on the local Jazz scene since the turn of the Millennium.

Musically, the compositions presented on this album are in many respects a full circle closure, returning to melody and harmony, after years of exploration of more abstract forms and soul searching. Perhaps years of experience are the necessary ingredients in order to relax, grow up and return to the basics. Whatever the processes behind writing this music are, they prove to be highly effective and the result is brilliant in every respect.

Reinforced by two younger, but highly experienced representatives of the Polish Jazz scene, the Oles Brothers rhythm section proves again to be the best one out there, switching moods, tempi, volumes and complexities with ease and elegance, pushing the epic suite forward step by step, somewhat similarly to the modus operandi of the great Charles MingusFind albums by this artist, who also used to expand his pieces during live concerts to last, as if time was of no essence.

In the liner notes Bartlomiej Oles, tells us that the suite was composed over a period of over twenty years, with the individual parts reflecting the ups and downs of his life during that time. Regardless of the circumstances leading to their creation, they are all exceedingly beautiful, sometimes sweet, sometimes sad, but always deeply moving. We, the listeners, should be grateful for sharing them with us.

Overall, this is another marvelous album by Bartlomiej and his cohorts, a highly emotional musical experience, somewhat surprising by its lyricism and gentleness, all for the good of course. I am sort of speechless here, which does not happen to me often. I regret not to being there, when this music was recorded, but I had my share of luck of hearing you play live, so thanks for capturing it for posterity. A big, big hug and as usual a deep bow…

MARCIN OLES ~ ORNETTE ON BASS
NOT TWO 747 ~ POLAND ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

Recorded: 2002 Released: 2003

This is a solo bass album by Polish Jazz bassist / composer Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist. It presents twelve pieces, four of which are original compositions by Oles and eight are his interpretations of Ornette ColemanFind albums by this artist compositions. The album was recorded without any overdubbing and offers a wonderful sound quality.

Marcin Oles is familiar to Polish Jazz connoisseurs as half of the Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist team, which also includes his twin brother drummer / composer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist. Together they are considered as one of the most creative and artistically fulfilling duos in European Jazz, way beyond just a role of a rhythm section. This album can be considered as a "twin album" to Bartlomiej´s solo drums album recorded a couple of years later, called "Freedrum SuiteFind albums with this title", also released on the excellent Polish Not TwoFind albums on this label Records label.

A solo bass album is one of the most difficult projects within the Jazz idiom, and although some such recordings have proved to be iconic in the genre´s history, many others sadly became quite forgettable. Despite his relatively young age at the time of the recording (just under thirty years old), Marcin Oles manages to present a convincing, well balanced and obviously virtuosic set of performances, which flow smoothly from one piece to the next keeping the listener completely mesmerized. For the Coleman cognoscenti, following the Master´s compositions becomes a fun game of sorts, with the original material by Oles being every bit as interesting.

It takes a lot of courage and determination to face projects like this one, as the risk is quite challenging. Nevertheless Marcin Oles proves that there is nothing he can´t handle, and more importantly he is able to turn Coleman´s music into his own realm of European Free Jazz / Improvised Music, by adding the European sensitivity and aesthetics to the American roots. As such this music goes beyond the limited Jazz mainstream context and should be of interest to all connoisseurs of ambitious, challenging contemporary music. For lovers of bass and Polish Jazz hardcore collectors, this album is an absolute must.

It took me a few years to find a copy of this album at last, but do not despair – dedication and patience pay off eventually. Now a copy of this album finally makes my collection of Oles Brothers recordings complete, which is a joyous occasion.

ANDRZEJ PRZYBIELSKI ~ ABSTRACT
NOT TWO 761 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2003 Released: 2005

This is the first album recorded by Polish Avant-Garde Jazz trumpeter / composer Andrzej PrzybielskiFind albums by this artist with the fantastic rhythm section of Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist: bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist, and a unique document of the genius of Przybielski at work. The sessions, completely spontaneous and unplanned, capture on the spot improvisations by the trio, based of sketchy melodies and somewhat chaotic instruction given to the two "youngsters" by the legendary player seconds before the music starts.

The relaxed atmosphere of this sessions and apparent good mood of the leader (the tape keeps running when he makes his little jokes) results in some of the best moments of Przybielski´s playing ever, full of energy, Godly inspiration and great talent. Unfortunately with Przybielski´s untimely death in February 2011, all we have lest are his rather scarce recordings, which should be cherished for generations to come.

It´s interesting to compare this recording with the posthumously released "De ProfundisFind albums with this title", recorded by the same trio, some seven years apart. Some of the music on both recordings originated in the same themes, but is completely different of course. This music is an absolute treasure in every respect and one can only hope that more people will discover this music, now saved for posterity. Absolute must to all Avant-Garde Jazz connoisseurs!

ANDRZEJ PRZYBIELSKI ~ DE PROFUNDIS
FENOMMEDIA 011 (Barcode: 5907604327111) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2010 Released: 2011

Recently deceased Polish trumpeter / composer Andrzej PrzybielskiFind albums by this artist was without a doubt one of the greatest Polish Jazz musicians of all times. This fact is known only to a very small group of "insiders", familiar with his playing and his role in history of Polish Jazz, mostly on the Avant-Garde scene, but nevertheless is an undeniable fact. Przybielski was a genius in every respect. His eccentric personality, erratic behavior, alcohol and drug abuse, lack of basic life and organizational skills have placed him on the outskirts of society and only when on stage or in a recording studio his figure would be surrounded by a divine aura and his trumpet would utter some of the most profound sounds ever produced by a human.

It´s hardly surprising that his recorded legacy is truly pitiful and a "career" spanning over 50 years did not produce even one proper recording as a leader. I feel especially lucky in this case, as Przybielski did play on my "The Book Of JobFind albums with this title" production, contributing another small document of his amazing talents. In the last decade of his life Przybielski was associated with the Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist: bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer Barlomiej Brat OlesFind albums by this artist, Poland´s most formidable Free Jazz rhythm section.

This album features a live trio performance by Przybielski with the Oles Brothers, recorded in April 2010 (10 months before his death). They perform five pieces, three of which are credited to Przybielski and the other two to the trio. The music is perfectly suited for the extended improvisations by all the participants, which are the basis of this music. The recording and sound qualities are very good, which adds greatly to the overall effect.

The level of musicianship is of course phenomenal and this album ranks among the best Free Jazz albums recently recorded that I happened to listen to. Every moment is simply breathtaking, every sound just right, every note magnificent. Having said that, the fact that Przybielski is no longer with us makes me franticly regret the fact that more such music was not recorded. This is an absolute must and all those Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist fans out there, please listen to this music and discover his unknown soul brother. Brilliant!

ANDRZEJ PRZYBIELSKI ~ SESJA OPEN
NOT ON LABEL ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2005 Released: 2011

The fact that this is the only recording session as a leader by the great Polish Jazz trumpeter / composer Andrzej PrzybielskiFind albums by this artist is truly shocking, especially since it was only released recently following his tragic and untimely death in February 2011. Although Przybielski took part as a sidemen in numerous Polish Jazz recordings, his tragic life story ridden by a plethora of personal issues (mental instability, drug addiction, sociopathic behavior and reclusion) is equivalent to the amount of misfortune found in a Greek Tragedy, making him a rare bird and an outsider, known almost exclusively only by other Polish Jazz musicians. And yet, he was a true musician´s musician, as his genius was usually appreciated only by those, who were able to understand how great his talent truly was. In retrospect Przybielski had only one peer on the Polish scene, the great Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist, even if their respective careers were so diametrically different. Przybielski´s tone, phrasing, speed and inventiveness, clarity, consistency and versatility are so amazing, that (again in retrospect) his existence is not only Polish Jazz best ever kept secret, but a phenomenon worthy of a worldwide attention. This album, recorded almost by accident, was supposed to present Przybielski´s regular quartet led by him in the last years of his life with vibraphonist Karol SzymanowskiFind albums by this artist, bassist Grzegorz NadolnyFind albums by this artist and drummer Grzegorz DaronFind albums by this artist. However the vibraphonist could not take part in the session and was replaced at the last moment by saxophonist Yuriy OvsyannikovFind albums by this artist. The recording consists of eight original compositions by Przybielski, brilliantly executed by the quartet, mostly in a Free Jazz mood, but with clearly stated melodic themes and completely coherent rhythmic support, which keeps it well inside the realm of music most Jazz enthusiasts are able to enjoy. Of course "hearing is believing" in this case, so until you do you have to take my word for it – but it probably will be one of the best Jazz trumpet performances you ever experienced. Of course one mustn´t miss Przybielski´s "De ProfundisFind albums with this title" with the Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist (also released posthumously). I personally take a huge pride in the fact that Przybielski played on my production of "The Book Of JobFind albums with this title", which gave me the personal delight to watch him play at first hand. The album was released by a foundation, dedicating the proceeds to a production of a multimedia album about the life and Art of Andrzej Przybielski – only 500 copies of this album were pressed (´nuff said!).

ANDRZEJ PRZYBIELSKI ~ TREN ZALOBNY
MULTIKULTI 017 (Barcode: 5907529223178) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2008 - 2009 Released: 2011

This is the third posthumous release (in a few months) by the great Polish Avant-Garde trumpeter / composer Andrzej PrzybielskiFind albums by this artist, which is about as many albums as he released under his name during his entire life. This sad statistic once more reminds us that Art should be appreciated preferably while the Artist is still with us rather than when he´s gone. But, "better late than never", which is a solace for the fools, applies nevertheless. This album collects the recordings (both live and studio) Przybielski made with two young musicians: bassist Jacek MazurkiewiczFind albums by this artist and drummer Pawel OsickiFind albums by this artist, which were one of his last projects. The music is quite different from the acoustic trio performances with the Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist, as it also includes some electronically generated sound layers, vocal parts (with Przybielski´s distinctive voice) and other effects, which expand the scope significantly. In many respects this is a lesser known side of Przybielski´s activity, although he was involved with many innovative projects his entire life, some of which lied well beyond the Jazz idiom. Of course the music is brilliant and challenging as always in his case and attentive and open-minded listeners should find here an unusual and most rewarding musical experience. The album is an overwhelming proof of Przybielski´s versatility and complete disregard of conventions and limitations, which makes his untimely death even more tragic, as he definitely was one of very few of his class. Modern Avant-Garde Jazz lovers rejoice!

ANDRZEJ PRZYBIELSKI / CUSTOM TRIO ~ ANDRZEJ PRZYBIELSKI & CUSTOM TRIO
POLONIA 273 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2001 Released: 2001

This is the second album by legendary Polish Jazz trumpeter Andrzej PrzybielskiFind albums by this artist with the Custom TrioFind albums by this artist, which consists of saxophonist Janusz SmykFind albums by this artist, bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist (collectively known as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist – Poland´s most respected Free Jazz rhythm section). The music was recorded live at a coffee house in Bydgoszcz, a town where Przybielski lived and which is an important center of Polish Free Jazz / Improvised Music activity. They perform seven original compositions, all composed by Przybielski except one co-composed with Tymon TymanskiFind albums by this artist, another legendary Polish Jazz figure and the pioneer of Yass. Sadly the sound quality is truly sub-standard, almost certainly captured on a portable cassette recorder, which hampers the otherwise sublime musical experience.

The music is of course simply magnificent, presenting the essence of Free Jazz at its absolute apex, performed with flair and complete dedication. Przybielski is at top form and his solos soar straight to heaven. The young and relatively little known Smyk also plays like there is no tomorrow, standing firmly shoulder to shoulder with the Maestro. The fabulous rhythm section drives the entire vehicle forward ceaselessly with outstanding energy and drive. In retrospect there are very few other Polish Jazz recordings of this kind, which can be considered similar in quality and importance.

Just a decade after this recording was made Przybielski died, neglected, lonely and forsaken. His talent was never recognized and appreciated during his lifetime, his complex personality and behavioral abnormalities estranged him from society and of course the establishment. Like so many great Artists the recognition, albeit marginal, was absolutely too little, too late. Therefore this album is another important piece of the limited legacy Przybielski left us to remember him by and of course an essential piece of Polish Jazz history.

ANDRZEJ PRZYBIELSKI & OLES BROTHERS ~ SHORT FAREWELL
AUDIO CAVE 2021/001 (Barcode: 5908298549209) ~ POLAND ~ Avant-Garde Jazz

Recorded: 2003 Released: 2021

This is an archival album presenting recordings made by the legendary Polish Jazz trumpeter Andrzej PrzybielskiFind albums by this artist, with the superb rhythm section consisting of bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and his twin brother Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist (collectively known as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist). These recordings were considered lost for all these years until now, and after being miraculously recovered and restored, are presented here for the first time. The album presents eleven original compositions, one twelve minutes long and the others running from just under half a minute and up to about four minutes. Three of the compositions are credited to Przybielski, six to Oles Brothers, one to the trio and finally one to Bartlomiej Oles.

Przybielski and Oles Brothers recorded together several times, going back to the turn of the Millennium. First they recorded two albums with the Custom TrioFind albums by this artist, which featured the Oles Brothers: “Free BopFind albums with this title” and “Andrzej Przybielski & Custom TrioFind albums with this title”. At the time the music included here was recorded (2003), they recorded the album “AbstractFind albums with this title” and some years later (2010) they recorded the album “De ProfundisFind albums with this title”. This album is of course a precious addition to their common recorded legacy and a historic document of the outmost importance.

Przybielski, who died in 2011, was one of Polish Jazz most idiosyncratic figures, a fearless Avant-Gardist and a loner, who was rejected by the local Jazz mainstream and its establishment and as a result was offered relatively few opportunities to record and perform, always acting on the artistic fringe. His sublime technique allowed him to play with heartbreaking lyricism and uncompromising honesty, which sadly was recognized by but a few. I was extremely lucky and fortunate to meet and work with Przybielski during the recording of “The Book Of JobFind albums with this title” album, which left an immense impression on me at the time.

It is great to see that Przybielski and his music are not forgotten and are preserved by those who knew and worked with him, carrying the legacy to the next generations. Projects, like this one, are beautiful examples of preservation of High Culture, especially in days when the world is being drowned is mindless excrements.

For true fans of Polish Jazz and European Avant-Garde, this album, despite its short playing time, is an absolute must, of course, literally worth its weight in gold. It would be sacrilegious to treat this music as accidental “leftovers” and it deserves to be treated with love and respect. A great memorial gesture celebrating the tenth anniversary of Przybielski’s premature departure.

KEN VANDERMARK / OLES BROTHERS ~ IDEAS
NOT TWO 765 (Barcode: 5907589871654) ~ USA ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

Recorded: 2005 Released: 2005

This is a an album by American saxophonist / clarinetist / composer Ken VandermarkFind albums by this artist, recorded in a trio setting with Polish rhythm section comprising of bassist / composer Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer / composer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist, collectively known as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist. The album presents ten original compositions, all co-composed by all three members of the trio.

Vandermark enjoyed enormous popularity in the Polish Free Jazz circles, playing often in Poland with his American ensembles and groups featuring local musicians and recording dozens of albums over time, which were consequently released in Poland. That popularity was certainly way beyond the popularity Vandermark enjoyed in his home base in Chicago or in the US in general and remains an anomaly in the Polish Jazz history, the only explanation of which is the notorious Polish inferiority complex, which awards to American musicians the rank of God, which in most cases is completely mislead.

This particular recording is definitely one of the best recordings by Vandermark made in Poland, which has to be credited to the wonderful contributions made by the Oles Brothers herein, which manage to tame Vandermark´s often chaotic statements and achieve a melancholic and deeply moving statement by the trio. Both the saxophone and clarinet statements are subdued and introvert, superbly supported by the sensitive, elegant and highly aesthetic performances by the rhythm section. The rhythm section is by no means constrained to provide the rhythmic patterns, but actually performs on the same level with the soloist, in perfect conceptual unison.

Although the music is credited to the trio, listeners familiar with the work of Oles Brothers will surely recognize their compositional patterns in most of the compositions present here, with Vandermark´s contribution being less detectable.

Overall this is an excellent contemporary Jazz with some Free and Improvised Music elements but on the whole completely accessible by most Jazz connoisseurs. This is definitely not a very typical Vandermark statement, which of course works for the best. Highly recommended and I urge everybody to get a copy before this gem gets out of print.
