This wonderful Box Set contains the three albums by the legendary duo of US vibraphonist / composer Gary BurtonFind albums by this artist and pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist recorded in the 1970s and released on the ECMFind albums on this label label, which are "Crystal SilenceFind albums with this title" (ECM 1024) recorded in 1972, "DuetFind albums with this title" (ECM 1140) recorded in 1978 and the double live album "In ConcertFind albums with this title" (ECM 1182/83) recorded in 1979. The duo´s recordings revolutionized the approach to the format in Jazz and produced some of the finest music ever recorded, emphasizing the art of conversation and listening to each other, which is put before individual virtuosity. CORE ~ GOLONKA LOVE
MOSEROBIE 063 (Barcode: 7320470104194) ~ NORWAY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2007 - 2008 Released: 2008

This is the 5th album by the Norwegian Jazz quartet The CoreFind albums by this artist, which consists of saxophonist Kjetil MosterFind albums by this artist, pianist Erlend SlettevollFind albums by this artist, bassist Steinar RaknesFind albums by this artist and drummer Espen AalbergFind albums by this artist, who is the band’s leader and primary composer. This album also introduces the band’s new saxophonist Jorgen MathisenFind albums by this artist, who replaces Moster on several tracks. Polish DJ LenarFind albums by this artist participates on several tracks as well. The music included on the album was captured live during three separate concerts in Jazz clubs in Poland, where the band often plays and enjoys faithful following. The drummer and the bassist composed most of the music, with a couple of improvised pieces credited collectively to the band and one being a traditional African tune. These recordings testify to the intensity and incredible power the band is celebrated for, but also their versatility and openness, which is quite unusual in most contemporary Jazz ensembles. Each of the three gigs captured herein presents a different facet of the group: the electric side dominated by the distorted electric piano and wailing soprano saxophone, which brings fond memories of the early Weather ReportFind albums by this artist days; the acoustic side, which brings us back to the explosive days of the John ColtraneFind albums by this artist quartet, where Freedom rules, supported rock-steady by the piano pulsating a la McCoy TynerFind albums by this artist; and finally the contemporary side, incorporating ambient / electronic sounds as an organic ingredient of the music. The rhythm section supports the music at all times with elegance and grace, contributing the powerful engine behind the soloists and bonds everything together. It is truly remarkable to see such young musicians displaying not only talent and dedication, but also maturity well beyond the call of duty. They are certainly doing their own thing without much regard to commercial acceptance, which is even rarer. Overall this is a remarkable document of European Jazz at its best, which gives hope as to the genre´s future, which sometimes looks bleak. These Norwegians carry on the splendid tradition of the Scandinavian Jazz, which contributed so much pleasure to our lives over the years. Any true Jazz lover should not miss this album as a part of his / her music for the soul. Brilliant stuff!

CORE ~ PARTY
MOSEROBIE 073 (Barcode: 7320470128183) ~ NORWAY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2010 Released: 2010

This is the 7th album by the Norwegian Jazz quartet The CoreFind albums by this artist, which consists of saxophonist Kjetil MosterFind albums by this artist, pianist Erlend SlettevollFind albums by this artist, bassist Steinar RaknesFind albums by this artist and drummer Espen AalbergFind albums by this artist, who is the band’s leader and primary composer. This album also features the band’s new saxophonist Jorgen MathisenFind albums by this artist, expanding the ensemble into a quintet. The drummer composed three of the five compositions present here and the bassist composed the other two. The band is known for their intense and powerful playing, which is well documented on their earlier recordings and of course present here as well. This album is for them in many ways a return to the source, as it sounds remarkably similar stylistically and sonically to the John ColtraneFind albums by this artist late ImpulseFind albums on this label recordings, which were the zenith of the Free Jazz movement and are the band´s primary influence. But the Core’s intensity and fierce improvisations retain a melodic outline at all times, without turning into a pure “wall of sound” state, which Coltrane often utilized. The music follows a more or less fixed pattern, starting as a piano trio, which states the melody and then the piano improvises first, later joined by the horns. The pianist’s powerful left hand keeps emphasizing the chords through the entire duration of the tunes, very much in the same manner as McCoy TynerFind albums by this artist did in Coltrane’s quartet. The saxophonists are both superb improvisers, free from the “bad manners” which Free Jazz / Improvised Music often suffers from, like lack of direction and unnecessary prolonging of the solos without saying anything innovative. All those contribute to the feeling of satisfaction and aural pleasure experienced by the listener exposed to this wonderful music. These young Norwegians make European Jazz proud, especially in view of their openness to other types of music and instrumentation, as evident on their earlier recordings. They are definitely a phenomenon, which Jazz connoisseurs should follow closely as they are, as far as I can feel, destined to reach higher planes. Wholeheartedly recommended!

CHICK COREA ~ ANTIDOTE
CONCORD 888072103351 (Barcode: 888072103351) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2019 Released: 2019

As 2021 nears its end it’s time to commemorate the passing of one of the greatest heroes of American Jazz, keyboardist / composer / bandleader Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, who sadly passed in February this year.

This is the last studio album by Corea, recorded with an octet, which includes also drummer Marcus GilmoreFind albums by this artist, bassist Carlitos Del PuertoFind albums by this artist, saxophonist / flautist Jorge PardoFind albums by this artist, guitarist Nino JoseleFind albums by this artist, trombonist Steve DavisFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Michael RodriguesFind albums by this artist and percussionist Luisito QuinteroFind albums by this artist. Tap dancer Nino de los ReyesFind albums by this artist and vocalists Ruben BladesFind albums by this artist, Gayle MoranFind albums by this artist and Maria BiancaFind albums by this artist also appear on selected tracks.

The album re-visits Corea’s compositions from the albums “My Spanish HeartFind albums with this title” and “TouchstoneFind albums with this title”, presents two newly composed pieces for this album and also two pieces by other composers (Paco de LuciaFind albums by this artist and Antonio Carlos JobimFind albums by this artist) and finally a short treatment of a Classical composition, together eleven tracks.

The music is distinctly more Latin oriented that the original albums, taking it somewhat away from the Jazz facet and deeply into the grooves and rhythms of Spanish, Cuban, Brazilian and other areas of Latin music, all beautifully arranged, orchestrated and performed by these splendid musicians, under the guidance of the leader. This international team, which includes players from Cuba, Spain and American based musicians born in Latin countries, adds the authentic flavor, which was somewhat more hinted on the original albums. In the liner notes Cores says: “I might be of Italian heritage, but my heart is Spanish”, which certainly explains his adoration for the Latin zest.

Although the album does not introduce anything innovative as far as Corea’s musical heritage is concerned, it certainly confirms his unique talents as composer and player, which have always been beyond reproach.

Overall, this is certainly a proper document of one of the many facets of Corea’s music, which embraced a plethora of styles, genres and approaches, from Avant-Garde to Fusion, always brilliant and completely unique. His Artistry will be sadly missed and his sweet personality, to those who met him, will be always a cherished memory.

CHICK COREA ~ CHILDREN`S SONGS
ECM 1267 (Barcode: 602517762176) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 1983 Released: 2008

US pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist has been in the epicenter of modern Jazz for the last five decades, always on top and up-to-date, a living legend. Corea´s recorded legacy accumulated over time amounts to a staggering body of work, presenting him as a prolific and diverse Artist, who can be inventive and intelligent regardless of the musical circumstance he finds himself in, be it Free Jazz, Fusion, contemporary Classical or just straight ahead (well never really "straight ahead") Jazz. This album presents him "flirting" with contemporary Classical material – twenty miniatures for solo piano and one trio (with violin and cello) piece, which he composed over a period of years. These miniature are all exquisite little pieces, delicate as china dolls, and seemingly simple, hence the name. The entire album is a true delight from start to finish and proves that Corea is in par with other 20th Century composers; at least as far as the miniature form is concerned (see Béla BartókFind albums by this artist, Zoltán KodályFind albums by this artist and others). Brilliant stuff!

CHICK COREA ~ COREA.CONCERTO
SONY 61799 (Barcode: 5099706179924) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 1999 Released: 1999

What a fantastic and sadly overlooked album! Recorded in 1999 with his group OriginFind albums by this artist and the London Philharmonic OrchestraFind albums by this artist, this is Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist’s first “serious” flirt with classical music. Combining jazz and classical music is not new per se, but the results over the years varied between banal and brilliant. Fortunately this one belongs to the latter category. Corea proved over the years his amazing versatility in the jazz genre, composing and performing in every sub-genre between free jazz and fusion. This time he steps beyond the strict jazz field and shows that he can do it splendidly. The album includes two major works (each in three parts): his already “classic” composition Spain arranged for sextet and orchestra and the Concerto No. 1 for piano and Orchestra. The music is of course typical Corea, but the orchestral parts bring reminiscences of Gershwin’s classical works and works of the French Modernists. Of course the entire work is original and intricate enough to provide the listener with immense pleasures. The recording quality is superb, with each instrument heard distinctly and in full range. Special merit goes to Avishai CohenFind albums by this artist’s bass contributions. Most warmly recommended and essential for Corea’s fans!

CHICK COREA ~ PLAYS
CONCORD 888072171442 (Barcode: 888072171442) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2018 Released: 2020

This is a 2CD album of solo piano performances by iconic American Jazz pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist. The recording dates and places are not specified, which is highly unusual, but the album was released first on Chick’s label in 2018, and this is the second edition released in 2020, just a few months before his death. The recording quality is absolutely sublime all the way through.

Corea plays some of his original compositions as well as his interpretations of works by Classical Music composers like Wolfgang Amadeus MozartFind albums by this artist, Domenico ScarlattiFind albums by this artist and Frederic ChopinFind albums by this artist or other Jazz composers like Bill EvansFind albums by this artist, Thelonious MonkFind albums by this artist, George GershwinFind albums by this artist, Antonio Carlos JobimFind albums by this artist and Paco De LuciaFind albums by this artist. A couple of piano duets (played on one piano) are also included, one with Israeli pianist Yaron HermanFind albums by this artist and another with French pianist Charles HeisserFind albums by this artist. Corea also adds his spoken word commentary about the music he is about to perform.

Although the music does not add anything new to listeners familiar with Corea’s music, it is a great document of his Artistry, versatility and his excellent contact with his audience, which always was one of his virtues.

Overall this is a wonderful addition to the extensive recording legacy left to us by Corea, which sparkles and shines, and as always brings infinite joy to the listeners. He was a unique musician and a beautiful human being, and I have been lucky to enjoy both of these qualities at first hand.

CHICK COREA ~ PORTRAITS
STRETCH 888072356030 (Barcode: 888072356030) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2011 - 2012 Released: 2014

As incredible as it might sound, pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist has been an integral and continuous element of the soundtrack of my life for the last five decades. I travelled with him hand in hand through every album he released over the years, moving from modern Jazz, to Free and Improvised Music, to piano solo miniatures, to Fusion, back to modern mainstream, to piano-vibraphone duets, to piano duets, to electric groups and acoustic trios, to Classical explorations and on and on. What a journey...

As usual every new album by Chick is an adventure. It´s been a while since he released a solo piano album and this 2CD set full of outstanding solo performances is a true delight in every sense. All the music was recorded live during his solo piano performances in Europe, Canada and US (and even Africa). On the first CD Chick performs several lengthy interpretations of pieces by Thelonious MonkFind albums by this artist, Bud PowellFind albums by this artist and Bill EvansFind albums by this artist, one standard and one pop song by Stevie WonderFind albums by this artist. The last track on the first CD is his composition dedicated to Paco De LuciaFind albums by this artist. On the second CD he performs twenty five miniatures, first by Classical composers Alexander ScriabinFind albums by this artist and Bela BartokFind albums by this artist and then two sets of his own compositions grouped under the common titles: "Children´s Songs" and "Portraits". Both CDs include Chick´s spoken interludes explaining his intentions and motivations behind the music he performs.

It seems pretty superfluous to try and explain anything about the music herein. Obviously it presents a wide scope of cultural backgrounds from Classical European music to modernism and than Jazz and its various facets and finally the personal universe of Chick Corea, which is able to contain all that infinite richness and expand upon it. Chick´s way of playing is very personal and quite recognizable to his followers and connoisseurs, so there are no great surprises in that area, except that for a man in his seventies Chick is infinitely more alive, creative and inventive than today´s young zombie generation stuck inside their smart phones.

Technically the music is superbly recorded, with excellent detail and warm ambience, which makes listening to this album a delightful experience. Chick is still one of the leaders of the Jazz pack and life seems to treat him and his music well, for which we all should be grateful. Listening for two hours to this music is a trip to sanity so put your feet up and enjoy as long as you can.

CHICK COREA ~ SARDINIA
CANDID 33112 (Barcode: 708857331123) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 2018 Released: 2023

This is a live album by the great American Jazz pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, recorded with the Orchestra da Camera Della SardegnaFind albums by this artist, and released posthumously. The album presents seven tracks, two of which are spoken introductions, three are parts of the Piano Concerto No. 24 by Wolfgang Amadeus MozartFind albums by this artist and two are by George GershwinFind albums by this artist, one song (in a solo piano version) and the Godly “Rhapsody In Blue”. The album is appropriately subtitled as “A Night of Mozart & Gershwin”.

Corea’s affinity and involvement with Classical Music is well documented on record and with his virtuosity and impeccable taste at helm, the results of his flirting with Classical Music were always extraordinary, as is, not surprisingly, this one. Captured about a couple of years before Corea’s untimely death, it shows him still in perfect form, which he managed to preserve to the very end. It seems to be his last live recording available on record so far.

The music is a perfect example of the right balance between the source, i.e. the original scores of the music, and Corea’s interpretations of it, including his improvised parts. It all works absolutely coherently, in perfect harmony and obvious respect, which characterized Corea’s work in all areas throughout his career.

Although described as “unconventional” by critics, personally I don’t see any lack of convention in this music, on the contrary, Corea’s improvisations are playful, intelligent and creative, but perfectly fitting the original compositions, which, if such thing was possible, most probably would have been approved by the original composers with a huge smile and a raised hat.

“Rhapsody In Blue” (RIB) is probably the most influential piece of music in my life and I have listened to countless versions of it, both live and on record, in the seven decades since my existence on this speck of dirt we all share. My very early years were full of Classical Music, which I have spent conducting orchestras in front of our old, big radio in our living room. Gershwin’s RIB was a true shock, as it opened by ears to a new world, which at the time I didn’t even know exists, called Jazz. Although RIB is completely composed, every note of it, it is full of Jazz spirit, even if Gershwin himself didn’t really intend it to be so. The solo piano parts just beg to be expanded by improvisation, a concept I was not familiar with at the time, but sensed deeply, and comparing different versions of this Masterpiece became a sort of obsession for me. Imagine my surprise, when during a conversation with Chick Corea, who visited my home, we discovered a common enthusiasm about this piece of music (which Corea mentions in his introduction). Listening to this album vividly and fondly brings back that and other conversations I was lucky to have with the Maestro. It is therefore not surprising that the version of RIB on this album is my favorite moment. Corea’s touches on the keyboard herein are simply divine. What a pity you are gone my Friend.

Overall, this is a brilliant example of what this kind of Jazz-Classical Fusion is all about: respect, intelligence, vison and above all honesty! For the many Corea’s followers, this is an absolute must, especially those less aware of his love affair with Classical Music. Somehow, quite surprisingly, this album was almost completely ignored upon its release, which is a true shame. Absolutely not to be missed!

Recorded: 2011 Released: 2012

This is another piece of music by legendary pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist which amalgamates Jazz and Classical music, a tendency Corea seems to favor since a few years back. There are few surprises here, as Corea continues to write excellent melodic music which is so easy to like by a wide range of listeners, performed by a great quintet, which comprises of saxophonist / flautist Tim GarlandFind albums by this artist, trombonist Steve DavisFind albums by this artist, bassist Hans GlawischnigFind albums by this artist and drummer Marcus GilmoreFind albums by this artist and a chamber orchestra. The six-piece concerto takes up the entire first CD of this set. On the second CD the quintet performs four pieces, this time without the orchestra, three of which are standards and one is by Corea. The rest of the CD is taken by 11 solo piano improvisations, composed and performed by Corea. Since the second CD has nothing in common with the first one it should be seen as a kind of "bonus", which of course is welcomed by Corea fans, enjoying everything he records. For people who like the Jazz-Classical Fusion this is a treat, others might find this out of their sphere of interest. Whatever Corea does, he is simply too good to be ignored, so I can´t help but recommend this.

STRETCH 888072026490 (Barcode: 888072026490) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2011 Released: 2016

As 2021 nears its end it’s time to commemorate the passing of one of the greatest heroes of American Jazz, keyboardist / composer / bandleader Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, who sadly passed in February this year.

This is a 3CD album by Corea, recorded live at the NY Blue Note club in 2011, during the celebrations of his 70th Birthday. It features ten different lineups with thirty musicians, which span Corea’s extraordinary career and which produced some of the greatest American Jazz ever. The lineups include Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist, Five Peace BandFind albums by this artist, Electric BandFind albums by this artist, duos with Bobby McFerrinFind albums by this artist, Gary BurtonFind albums by this artist, Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist, Marcus RobertsFind albums by this artist and others. Together the collected list of musicians sounds like the Who’s Who of the 20th Century American Jazz (and a few Europeans for good measure).

For the avid Corea fans, who followed his career for five decades (up to that point) the album does not innovate of course, being primarily an overview and it excludes his early days, when he played mostly Avant-Garde Jazz, but a comprehensive summary would have taken a few more hours (or CDs) of course. But as it is, it offers four hours of incredible, diverse and superb music, performed by brilliant musicians, so one can’t go wrong here.

CHICK COREA ~ TONES FOR JOAN`S BONES
RHINO 75352 (Barcode: 081227535223) ~ USA ~ Jazz

The 1966 debut album by Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist (recently re-mastered on RhinoFind albums on this label and originally released on a small label called VortexFind albums on this label, which belonged to AtlanticFind albums on this label). Chick leads a quintet with Woody ShawFind albums by this artist on trumpet, Joe FarrellFind albums by this artist on sax, Steve SwallowFind albums by this artist on bass and veteran Master Joe ChambersFind albums by this artist on drums (Farrell will of course return and play with Chick many more times later, including the first version of Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist). The music – composed by Chick except one tune by Kurt WeillFind albums by this artist – is basically Hard Bop with a distinct Latin tinge, which of course is hardly surprising as Chick paid his dues playing in several Latin bands led by Mongo SantamariaFind albums by this artist, Willie BoboFind albums by this artist, etc. His stint with Stan GetzFind albums by this artist also included a lot of Latin influenced material (Steve also comes from Stan’s band). The album lost none of its power and excitement over the years and is a damn good listen. To get the complete session I recommend the Inner SpaceFind albums with this title CD as a companion.

CHICK COREA ~ TRILOGY
STRETCH 888072356856 (Barcode: 888072356856) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2010 - 2012 Released: 2014

This is an album by the American Jazz pianist / composer / bandleader Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist recorded with his trio which includes bassist Christian McBrideFind albums by this artist and drummer Brian BladeFind albums by this artist. Three guest musicians appear on selected tracks. The music was recorded live during two extended tours by this trio. The album presents seventeen tracks, which are a mixture of five Corea originals, eleven standards and one Classical piece arranged by Corea, spread over 3 CDs.

Corea (born 1941) has been one of the most prominent American Jazz musicians in the last six decades and his contribution to the genre is simply beyond putting it into words. He performed in many diverse Jazz environments but his solo piano and the classic piano trio work was always my absolute favorite part of his astounding musical heritage. As much as I admire his own compositions, his interpretations of Jazz standards are among the finest out there, in the same stratum as those by Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist and Keith JarrettFind albums by this artist.

I have followed Corea´s recordings zealously for decades and had the pleasure to listen to him play many a time as well as meet him in person on several occasions. Anybody who ever heard Corea play live must have observed his superb ability to communicate with the audience and create an unprecedented rapport, which is almost always also present on his live recordings, including this one.

The trio plays together marvelously and the age difference between the Master and his rhythm section is completely insignificant. A perfect balance as far as dividing the roles and exchanging solos, which is flawlessly documented by the outstanding recording quality, turns this album into an ecstatic (but also highly aesthetic) listening experience.

Yes there is nothing new here and we have heard it all before – so what? Jazz of such high quality is like air and water – there is never too much of it. Corea proved over time that he is one of the most inquisitive American musicians, who tried everything Jazz has to offer between Jazz-Rock Fusion to Avant-Garde explorations, so he certainly can´t be accused of clinging to the weathered American Jazz formulas. Playing classic mainstream Jazz as good as the music presented here is always high Art. Hats off to you Maestro!

CHICK COREA ~ TRIO MUSIC
ECM 1232/33 (Barcode: 601215945423) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1981 Released: 1990

The members of this great Jazz trio, comprising of pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, bassist Miroslav VitousFind albums by this artist and drummer Roy HaynesFind albums by this artist, met briefly in the late 1960s, when they recorded Corea´s 2nd album as a leader called "Now He Sings, Now He SobsFind albums with this title", which was one of the great recordings of that period. On this album they continue their musical journey together, now certainly more mature and with a lot of experience behind them. This album, originally released as a double LP, presents the trio in two quite different settings. The music, which was originally present on LP 1, is a set of trio and duo improvisation, whereas the music on LP 2 is a series of compositions by the great Thelonious MonkFind albums by this artist, uniquely transformed by the trio. With musicians of this caliber one should expect nothing less that perfection, and this is exactly what this album is all about: perfection. The trio simply floats in perfect harmony, from one tune to the next, as if this incredible music was the easiest thing to do, which of course it surely isn´t. Just grab it and immerse yourself in these sounds, blissfully forgetting everything else. Brilliant stuff!

CHICK COREA ~ TRIO MUSIC LIVE IN EUROPE
ECM 1310 (Barcode: 602517758315) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1984 Released: 2008

US pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist has been in the epicenter of modern Jazz for the last five decades, always on top and up-to-date, a living legend. Corea´s recorded legacy accumulated over time amounts to a staggering body of work, presenting him as a prolific and diverse Artist, who can be inventive and intelligent regardless of the musical circumstance he finds himself in, be it Free Jazz, Fusion, contemporary Classical or just straight ahead (well never really "straight ahead") Jazz. This live recording spotlights Corea´s talents as an interpreter of Jazz standards, as well as performing his own compositions and compositions by his fellow musicians. The trio (called "Trio Music") includes two other legendary musicians: bassist Miroslav VitousFind albums by this artist and drummer Roy HaynesFind albums by this artist, and is one of Chic´s "regular" groups that he records and tours with. The performance is absolutely stunning, from start to finish and Corea´s virtuosity, great sense of humor and intelligence are simply breathtaking. Brilliant stuff!

Following a series of duet recordings for the ECMFind albums on this label label, pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and vibraphonist / composer Gary BurtonFind albums by this artist cooperated once again on this project, which adds a string quartet to their wonderful duo, creating a sextet, albeit not a "classic" Jazz sextet one might expect. The music is a suite especially composed by Corea, which combines Jazz and contemporary Classical music, a trend Corea followed many times later on in his career. Both the music and the performances are brilliant, as usual with these two Master musicians, and every Corea / Burton follower will not miss this for the world. A must!

CONCORD 888072172258 (Barcode: 888072172258) ~ USA ~ Jazz

This is a 2CD live album by pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and his Acoustic BandFind albums by this artist trio with bassist John PatitucciFind albums by this artist and drummer Dave WecklFind albums by this artist. Vocalist Gayle MoranFind albums by this artist, Corea’s wife, is featured on one track. The album presents twelve compositions (one repeated twice), six of which are Corea originals and the other six are standards. Recorded in January of 2018, almost exactly four years ago (as of the time of writing), this was one of the last Corea’s albums recorded before his passing in 2021.

Among Corea’s enormous recording legacy, my favorites have always been his classic piano trios, regardless of the stylistic setting, starting with his early Avant-Garde trios, via Trio Music, Trilogy or Akoustic Band, those trios were always spectacular. I always felt that Corea felt the best in a piano trio setting and his most creative performances continuously emerged in that environment.

Corea and the Akoustic Band recorded three albums in the early 1990s and played some concerts in 2004 / 2005, which were filmed and released on video, and this final “reunion” of sorts came as a big surprise and joy of course, as hearing this sublime trio is always an exhilarating experience.

The choice of material is hardly surprising, combining both some of his favorite original compositions and standards that he loved to play. The unity, telepathic conversation, mutual admiration and respect between the trio members is obviously immediately apparent, from the onset of the music to the very last second.

Overall, this album immediately joins the ranks of the top classic piano trio Jazz recordings of all times, presenting an everlasting example of artistry, excellence and aesthetics rarely achieved, but forever admired. No serious Jazz records collection should exist without this album being a part of it, and hopefully the album stays in print long enough for everybody to grab a copy. It was already reprinted once, so please keep it this way. An absolute must!

Pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist is obviously very fond of the great Art of piano duets; over the years he pioneered this highly demanding and difficult performing act with such piano luminaries like Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist, Friedrich GuldaFind albums by this artist, Nicolas EconomouFind albums by this artist, Gonzalo RubalcabaFind albums by this artist and recently Hiromi UeharaFind albums by this artist. This live recording of the duet with the great Italian pianist / composer Stefano BollaniFind albums by this artist is the latest chapter in this long saga. They perform twelve pieces, which include three co-composed improvisations, one original tune each and the rest are standards. The performance is stellar, from start to finish, as expected. Both players are obvious virtuosi and their mutual respect and understanding turn the two pianos into one instrument, which is grander that the sum of its parts. This album marks the return of Corea to the legendary ECMFind albums on this label label after many years – a most welcome event. There is no real need to add much more here; those familiar with Corea´s previous duo recordings will be surely delighted again, those unfamiliar with this great musical Art form should try it out – the sooner the better. CHICK COREA / GARY BURTON ~ HOT HOUSE
CONCORD 888072333635 (Barcode: 888072333635) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2011 Released: 2012

The duo of pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and vibraphonist / composer Gary BurtonFind albums by this artist has a history of almost four decades behind it and proves to be not only one of the most stable musical collaborations, but also one of the most prolific. The body of music the duo managed to records over the years is truly staggering, and belongs today the everlasting heritage of the Jazz Art Form.

Most of the music the duo recorded in the past was composed by Corea and Burton and therefore for this new project they decided to concentrate on Jazz standards, albeit selecting the lesser known material. Only after the material for this album was completed, they tried out a new piece by Corea, which was eventually recorded by the duo with the support of a string quartet and added to this album. This last piece is a preview of things to come, as they say in the liner notes, which surely will be another celebration, when released.

Corea and Burton are both aestheticians in addition to being musicians / artists, which sets them aside from most of their contemporaries. They both share a burning love for elegance, sophistication and grace, which is then reflected in their music. Those listeners, who are open-minded enough to comprehend and recognize these qualities in music, which are often hidden in small details and even under the surface, are able to enjoy this music in full. Hearing Corea and Burton perform is like watching a pair of dancers swirling around each other in a passionate engagement. This is always music with a capital M, and one must acknowledge that their ability to continue astonish us time after time if truly astounding.

Listeners familiar with the duo´s output need little encouragement to plunge again into their magic universe, but should the reader of these lines be blissfully ignorant of their brilliance, this album might be just the first step in the right direction. Sublime stuff!

CHICK COREA / GARY BURTON ~ THE NEW CRYSTAL SILENCE
CONCORD 230630 (Barcode: 888072306301) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 2007 Released: 2008

The original 1972 ECMFind albums on this label "Crystal SilenceFind albums with this title" album by Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and Gary BurtonFind albums by this artist was undoubtedly one of the pivotal Jazz recordings in every sense: the subtlety and the boldness of a duet setting with Corea´s intricate compositions and the unusual harmonics of the piano / vibraphone combination all contributed to the overall stunning result. Now, 35 years later, gray-haired and musically wiser, Corea and Burton decided to re-live the experience of creating music together and record an up-to-date version of their encounter. This time the project is much more ambitious, as the first of the two CDs presents the duo accompanied by a Symphony Orchestra (the Australian Sydney Symphony), playing a set of Corea´s compositions arranged for the orchestra by Tim GarlandFind albums by this artist. The second CD returns to the original intimate duo setting, which performs several more of Corea´s compositions and three standards. As expected, these performances are brilliant in every respect: on the technical level both musicians are virtuosi, and on the emotional level both are superbly lyrical and expressive. Corea´s compositions deserve all the status of classics of course and these new interpretations of familiar material shed a new light on its elegance and sophistication. This is an instant classic, a must for any serious Jazz connoisseur and a landmark recording. Wholeheartedly recommended!

CHICK COREA / NICOLAS ECONOMOU ~ ON TWO PIANOS
DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON 028947900115 (Barcode: 028947900115) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 1982 Released: 2012

Pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist is well known for his amazing versatility (among other things), which is expressed by the many different settings in which he performs. His love for the piano duet is universally acclaimed, starting with his legendary duet recordings / performances with Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist in the late 1970s. Since then he repeatedly returned to the piano duet with many other pianists, like Hiromi UeharaFind albums by this artist, Stefano BollaniFind albums by this artist and others. This album is a most welcome reissue of the 1982 recording of the piano duet performances with Corea and the great Cypriot pianist Nicolas EconomouFind albums by this artist, who died tragically at the ridiculous early age of 40 in a car accident. The live recording comprises of two improvised pieces (one of which is an extended suite 26 minutes long), two Corea compositions and six short pieces from the Bela BartokFind albums by this artist "Mikrokosmos" cycle. The performances are, as one might expect, absolutely brilliant and although Economou comes primarily from the Classical music sphere, the two musicians converse openly and quite telepathically. Considering the fact that these recordings were never previously reissued on CD and unavailable for almost 30 years, it´s great to see them back in circulation. A must to all Corea fans and people who lave piano music!

CHICK COREA / BÉLA FLECK ~ THE ENCHANTMENT
CONCORD 888072302532 (Barcode: 888072302532) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2006 Released: 2007

Although coming from different musical backgrounds, the duo of pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and virtuoso banjo player / composer Béla FleckFind albums by this artist works very well due to the fact that both are truly open-minded about music and both see in improvisation their primary way of expression. The duo cooperated already before this album was recorded, when Corea played as a guest artists on two album recorded by Fleck´s ensemble FlecktonesFind albums by this artist and Fleck appeared in the "Rendezvous in New YorkFind albums with this title" concerts, which celebrated Chick´s 60th birthday.

For this project they both composed new music, with Chick contributing four pieces and Béla six. They also perform one standard, so the album comprises of eleven duets, which sound as if piano and banjo were the most natural pairing of musical instruments, this obviously thanks to their virtuosity and mutual respect. The music is all excellent, combining many different influences and styles, from Jazz through Latin, Bluegrass, Country, Ragtime, Classical and World Music, a much diversified amalgam, which is simply delightful.

The music produced by this duo is so rich and fulfilling, that it lacks absolutely nothing as far as the presence of other instruments (a rhythm section for example) might have added. It is precisely that delicate balance between these two instruments, which creates these enchanting harmonies and moving melodies. A tad out of the ordinary at first, they soon blend into an inseparable union, with the whole being greater then the sum of its parts. And so, against all odds, this is another minor masterpiece, created by two great musicians, and we´re lucky to be able to enjoy it. Do yourself a favor and listen to this stuff at your earliest convenience – satisfaction guaranteed!

CHICK COREA & STEVE GADD BAND ~ CHINESE BUTTERFLY
STRETCH 888072042186 (Barcode: 888072042186) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2017 Released: 2017

This is a 2CD studio album recorded by a band co-led by two legendary American musicians: keyboardist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and drummer Steve GaddFind albums by this artist, who recorded together many times before, but never co-led a band together. They are joined by guitarist Lionel LouekeFind albums by this artist, saxophonist / flautist Steve WilsonFind albums by this artist, Cuban bassist Carlitos Del PuertoFind albums by this artist and Venezuelan percussionist Luisito QuinteroFind albums by this artist. Vocalist Philip BaileyFind albums by this artist joins them on one tune. The album presents eight tracks, six composed by Corea, one co-composed by him and Loueke and one is a John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist composition.

The music is all highly melodic, with a strong Latin tinge, dominated by typical Corea’s Fusiony compositions and lengthy improvisations, which allows the excellent musicians to show their chops. Three of the tracks last for well over quartet of an hour and document the “jam like” atmosphere of this recording session.

Most of the music is new, written by Corea especially for this album, but a new and much extended version of the classic “Return To Forever” song, which features Bailey, is certainly one of the highlights of this album. In some respect this album could be regarded as a preamble to the “Antidote” album recorded a couple of years later and features some of the musicians present on this album.

Overall, this a great and highly rewarding album, which offers the familiar Corea’s musical explorations between Fusion and Jazz-World Fusion, to which he returned in the few last years of his life. Superb compositions and performances, which never fail to bring a smile. Highly recommended!

CHICK COREA / HERBIE HANCOCK ~ AN EVENING WITH CHICK COREA & HERBIE HANCOCK
POLYDOR 835680 (Barcode: 042283568020) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1978 Released: 1988

The 1978 acoustic piano duet tour of Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist is documented on two albums – this one and the ColumbiaFind albums on this label companion album (also called An Evening WithFind albums with this title). Fortunately Chick & Herbie played so much music during their concerts that the two (both double vinyl albums originally) have no parallel tunes on them, except for the signature tunes: “Maiden Voyage” and “La Fiesta”, which get a completely different treatment on each release. This means that, as the music on both albums is absolutely divine (see my comments on the other album), they are both absolutely essential and constitute in fact a non-separable document. There is a slight difference in the choice of material on both releases, with this album including more complex and “freer” pieces with plenty of opportunities for both players to demonstrate their complete command of the instrument and more “unusual” playing techniques. On a side note: the tour was arranged not only to enable the two incredible musicians to enjoy each other’s company and inspiration, but also to “give the finger” to the horde of critics, which brutally dismissed Chick’s & Herbie’s 1970’s electric / fusion work, accusing them of betrayal towards the jazz Art Form and doubting their artistic integrity (which of course was a heap of nonsense). The performances included on these two albums prove how totally wrong they all were. Unfortunately two tracks on this album were edited (shortened) to enable the release of this material on a single CD (an artistic crime, that should be punishable by beheading the corporate decision-makers). Therefore a proper reissue of this album is still due – hats off to Columbia for not making the same stupid mistake.

CONCORD 231397 (Barcode: 888072313972) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2008 Released: 2009

Pianist Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and guitarist John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist are both icons of contemporary music. Their activities in the last 40 years span such a vast spectrum of music that only a very few other musicians on this planet can be counted their equals. Corea and McLaughlin both played a crucial role in the revolutionary Miles DavisFind albums by this artist ensemble that gave us "In A Silent WayFind albums with this title" and "Bitches BrewFind albums with this title", and then continued to explore and revolutionize Jazz and Fusion, each with his own numerous ensembles. Although they have performed over the years occasionally as a duo, no formal recordings were issued of these meetings (some of their playing can be heard on the momentous McLaughlin Montreux Box Set). Therefore the forming of the Five Peace BandFind albums by this artist, initiated by Corea after his last Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist reunion tour, is a first time the two Masters play together in a regular band. Of course one immediately assumes that the band should sound as a combination of Return To Forever and Mahavishnu OrchestraFind albums by this artist, but since the early days of Fusion are long gone, Five Peace Band´s concept is completely up to date and modern. With saxophonist Kenny GarrettFind albums by this artist, bassist Christian McBrideFind albums by this artist and drummer Vinnie ColaiutaFind albums by this artist the band is an incredible music making machine, offering the listener an orgy of sound, beautiful expanded improvisations and sophisticated compositions. Most of the material was written by Corea and McLaughlin, but they also pay tribute to their former boss Miles Davis by including some of his music, with another ex-Davis band member Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist present as a guest. There is little need to recommend this album flamboyantly, as any serious music lover surely understands the magnitude of this recording. CHICK COREA / ORIGIN ~ LIVE AT THE BLUE NOTE
STRETCH 9018 (Barcode: 013431901822) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1998 Released: 1998

Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist’s acoustic sextet OriginFind albums by this artist was formed in late 1997 by expanding his acoustic trio (Avishai CohenFind albums by this artist – bass and Adam CruzFind albums by this artist – drums) with the addition of trombonist Steve DavisFind albums by this artist and two reeds players Bob SheppardFind albums by this artist and Steve WilsonFind albums by this artist. After a brief period of rehearsals and one club performance the band was booked to play for six nights (two sets each night) at the NY Blue Note club, which was to be the band’s official premiere. All the music played at Blue Note was recorded, initially mainly for the sake of documentation, but upon listening to the results Corea decided to release this album, which presents just a taste of what happened there. A much more comprehensive recording project, capturing three entire nights (6 sets) was released as a 6 CDs set under the title “The Complete 1998 Live At The Blue Note RecordingsFind albums with this title”. Origin proved to be indeed an “origin”, a new beginning for Chick, who hasn’t led an acoustic sextet for over 20 years. It served as a perfect vehicle to develop and present a set of new compositions, which show an older and seasoned Jazz Master at work. The music is complex, somewhat dark, serious and multi-layered, requiring attentive listening. In many respects it often resembles some contemporary Classical Music influences. The players have plenty of space to develop both individual and collective extended improvisations, which of course are quite brilliant. Corea is not featured as the main soloist and steps back to become just one of the band’s members. All the music presented on this album, except for one standard, was composed by Corea, who re-examines his life’s achievements here, moving skillfully between his various musical activities, as diverse as Latin music and Free Jazz. All together this is a splendid example of modern Jazz at it’s best, with great music and excellent playing all the way. Corea’s fans don’t need any encouragement here and others should definitely investigate.

CHICK COREA / HIROMI UEHARA ~ DUET
STRETCH 230827 (Barcode: 888072308275) ~ USA ~ Jazz

We all know Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist loves playing piano duets with other pianists. The legendary recordings from 1978 with Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist are to this very day some of my all time favorite Jazz recordings. Seeing this new album, featuring acoustic piano duets with another favorite pianist of mine, Japanese prodigy Hiromi UeharaFind albums by this artist, really made my heart “jump” for a brief moment, as this was almost to good to be true. I did know these two played live together before, but a whole album and a double one at that – stupendous! The album was recorded live at the Blue Note Jazz Club in Tokyo, and includes, as Chick puts it, eloquently as always: “1 night, 2 pianos, 2 sets, 4 hands, 12 songs, 20 fingers, 176 keys, about 600 people in the audience and thousands of musical ideas exchanging between the two pianist and the audience”. It is exactly that and so much more… Regardless is the song is a standard, a piece written by Chick or by Hiromi, the two have a field day each and every time. The interplay is telepathic, the improvisations divine, the humor obvious and it all makes perfect musical sense and is so beautiful, that I had a marvelous time listening to the album twice in a row, something I almost never do usually. I hope I really don’t have to convince anybody this is superb music. Let me just state that in the last couple of years I have heard so much stupid allegations regarding Hiromi’s “commercialism”, “selling out” and other bullshit, I’m really glad that this album just blows all these baseless nonsense out of the window. Absolutely essential music for body and soul!

DOMINIK STRYCHARSKI CORE ~ ALERT
AUDIO CAVE 2025/002 (Barcode: 5908298549940) ~ POLAND ~ Avant-Garde Jazz

Recorded: 2022 Released: 2025

This is an album by Polish Jazz flautist / composer / bandleader Dominik StrycharskiFind albums by this artist and his CoreFind albums by this artist quintet, which also includes pianist Barbara DrazkovFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. Barbara DrazkowskaFind albums by this artist), trumpeter Wojciech JachnaFind albums by this artist, bassist Zbigniew KozeraFind albums by this artist and drummer Pawel SzpuraFind albums by this artist. Strycharski and Jachna employ electronics and Drazkowska plays a prepared piano. The album presents five tracks, all original compositions by the leader.

The music is a brilliant amalgam of composed, but highly unusual, modernist music and controlled Improvised interludes, which combine acoustic and electronic sounds, odd pulsations, Avant-Garde contemporary approach and a plethora of other wonderful weirdness, which immediately bring fond memories of Zappaesque complete disregard of conventions, in short everything one might desire in order to hear some exciting, unusual, challenging music, brilliantly performed by these highly talented musicians.

As expected, Jachna is the direct link to Jazz within this marvelous madness, and his trumpet soli are like bright stars on a night sky, showing the way to lost mariners. The rhythm section plays some inhumanly difficult rhythmic patterns, the piano is in charge of the almost melodic layers and Strycharski uses his flute / recorder skills sparingly, concentrating on electronic effects, but the little bits here and there are like cherries on top of the cake.

The music as a whole completely eschews categorization, and as a result a proper description, so it should be of course heard and not read about, so my humble efforts are a mere attempt to encourage as many people as possible not to miss this album. Mind you, it might take some patience, open-mindedness and a true love of unconventional music to enjoy it in full, but I have faith in my readers to possess these qualities, ergo fully equipped for the voyage.

I admit of being sometimes quite critical about Strycharski’s recordings, which simply means I don’t judge the books by their covers but listen carefully. This time I can’t utter anything but deep appreciation and admiration for his efforts as composer and leader, which are amicably and splendidly supported by his cohorts, producing a true work of musical Art.

Overall, this is a brilliant piece of modern music, completely cross-genre in nature and masterly designed and executed by the entire quintet. This is Avant-Garde, which breaks barriers and rules, without being rude and careless, which is demanding, but pleasing, and which expands our musical horizons! My deepest thanks to all of you!

DOMINIK STRYCHARSKI CORE / ORKIESTRA DETA URSUS ~ SYMFONIA FABRYKI URSUS (SOUNDTRACK)
AUDIO CAVE 2021/005 (Barcode: 5908298549247) ~ POLAND ~ Soundtracks

Recorded: 2017 - 2021 Released: 2021

This is an album by Polish Jazz flautist / composer Dominik StrycharskiFind albums by this artist and his ensemble CoreFind albums by this artist, which includes pianist Barbara DrazkowskaFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Wojciech JachnaFind albums by this artist, bassist Zbigniew KozeraFind albums by this artist and drummer Pawel SzpuraFind albums by this artist. The Ursus Brass OrchestraFind albums by this artist also takes part in this recording. The album presents five original compositions, all by Strycharski. The music was used as a soundtrack to the award winning documentary film about the Ursus factory, which ceased to exists in 2011, and which was famous for producing Polish tractors for more than 100 years.

The music, although performed by a Jazz quintet and a Brass Orchestra, includes hardly any Jazz elements per se and offers a dark, ambient, Cinematic Music, which is slow moving and minimal in its scope. It might be very appropriate as a soundtrack (I have not seen the documentary), but as a stand-alone piece of music it is much more difficult to swallow.

The industrial character of the music, as well as its lack of development, may emphasize / illustrate the labor done by the ex-workers of Ursus, who are the focus of this documentary, but out of that context it is rather daunting.

One of the tracks, which is performed just by the quintet, is the closest that this music gets to Jazz / Improvised Music, and features some great playing by Jachna, but again the twelve minutes long piece is completely static and monotonic, and even Jachna’s trumpet parts are unable to redeem it.

Overall, this album proves that Cinematic Music is not always able to stand by itself, unrelated to the visual layer. Despite the fact that it is performed by highly esteemed Polish Jazz musicians, it simply does not work for me. My fault of course.

DOMINIK STRYCHARSKI CORE 6 ~ CZOCZKO
FOR TUNE 0072 (Barcode: 5902768701708) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2014 Released: 2015

In the last couple of years the burgeoning Polish Jazz / Improvised Music scene re-discovered Polish Folklore and a long series of albums, which amalgamates these two genres into contemporary Jazz-World Fusion, have been recorded. As usual in such circumstances some of these albums are truly phenomenal and others are distinctly less so.

On this album Polish flautist / recorder player Dominik StrycharskiFind albums by this artist presents a series of nine compositions inspired by Kashubian folk songs, arranged and transformed into the Jazz / Improvised Music environment. Three of these pieces are performed by a duo comprising of Strycharski and clarinetist Waclaw ZimpelFind albums by this artist and the remaining six pieces are performed by a sextet which features a double rhythm section: bassists Zbigniew KozeraFind albums by this artist and Ksawery WojcinskiFind albums by this artist and drummers Hubert ZemlerFind albums by this artist and Krzysztof SzmandaFind albums by this artist; all of them are top representatives of the Polish Improvised Music milieu.

As much as I respect all these musicians, it is completely beyond me why they would invest time and energy into this project, which honestly is simply completely banal and meaningless in my opinion. None of the aims expected form the amalgamation of World Music and Jazz are achieved here; the folkloristic themes remain bare and simple and the Jazz additions plainly don´t stick to them. The double rhythm section is bombastic and overbearing, being mostly contra productive and the overall proceedings are simply pointless and boring.

Polish Folklore and Jazz have a proven record of working together wonderfully, both in the early Polish Jazz history in the 1960s and 1970s and currently with brilliant projects, many of which were released by For TuneFind albums on this label Records. This one is sadly a miss.

Of course this is only my personal view and others might disagree with me, as usual. The musicians will probably not like these words either, but hey this is what I hear…
