  | ATOLL ~ MUSICIENS-MAGICIENS (MS) MUSEA 2100 (Barcode: 3426300021007) ~ FRANCE ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1973 Released: 2004
1st album by the seminal French Prog band AtollFind albums by this artist, which dominated the French Prog scene in the 1970s following this brilliant debut. They managed to create both Symphonic Prog and incorporate jazzy improvisations characteristic of Fusion. Excellent musicianship and compositions make this album sound as good today as it did when first released.

  | ATOLL ~ TERTIO (MS) MUSEA 2102 ~ FRANCE ~ Progressive Rock
3rd album from 1977 by this band. Further development with more emphasis on the compositions and careful arrangements rather then the virtuosity of the players. Less fire then on the previous albums, but much more soul and sophistication. Still a true Prog classic.

  | ATOLL ~ ROCK PUZZLE (MS) MUSEA 2103 ~ FRANCE ~ Progressive Rock
4th and last album from 1979. By the end of 1970s most Prog groups were changing their approach and looking for a new format and Atoll did the same. This album is much more song oriented, with some heavy studio arrangements and overdubs. But the greatness is still there and fans of the group still get their fair deal of good music. Especially interesting is the 1981 bonus tracks recorded with John Wetton, who as some point was considering joining the group.

The moody, sometimes gothic atmosphere of medieval spookiness and bluesy undertones beautifully expressed by Trower´s virtuosic guitar licks, are simply stunning. | PROCOL HARUM ~ LIVE: IN CONCERT WITH THE EDMONTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA MUSEA 2105 (Barcode: 3426300021052) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1971 Released: 2006
6th album by great British group Procol HarumFind albums by this artist and their first live recording, which was a very ambitious undertaking and consists of a series of Procol Harum earlier compositions arranged especially for a symphony orchestra playing with a rock group. Although not a first attempt of such kind, this was one of the first and by far one of the best such efforts ever attempted. The band´s music suits the Classical idiom better then any music written by their contemporaries to start with.

  | PROCOL HARUM ~ PROCOL`S NINTH MUSEA 2108 (Barcode: 3426300021083) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1975 Released: 2006
9th album by great British group Procol HarumFind albums by this artist featuring the same lineup as its predecessor "Exotic Birds And FruitFind albums with this title". Although the group was almost at the end of its long career at the time and this album was to be one before the last they recorded ("Something MagicFind albums with this title"), it certainly doesn´t show any signs of weariness or lack of inspiration. Full of great songs, including the outstanding "Pandora´s Box", which is a great reminder of their debut single "A Whiter Shade Of Pale", the album is perhaps the rockiest one they ever recorded but still well within the unique parameters that characterize their output. For the first time the album´s arrangements include a subtle support of a brass section, which works beautifully. With Gary BrookerFind albums by this artist´s incredible voice strong as ever and his composing abilities paired with Keith ReidFind albums by this artist´s (who for the first time gets to pictured with the other band members on the front cover) lyrics being at their peak, this album is a classic and an essential piece of the Golden Decade puzzle. A must in any serious Prog collection!

  | SANDROSE ~ SANDROSE MUSEA 4003 ~ FRANCE ~ Progressive Rock
1st and only album from 1972 by this French group. Very interesting compositions, somewhat jazzy at times, with nice lead female vocals (sung in English, which is unusual for French bands!). A great document of European early Prog.

  | MONA LISA ~ LE PETIT VIOLON DE MR GREGOIRE MUSEA 4009 ~ FRANCE ~ Progressive Rock
3rd album from 1976 by this great French Prog outfit, who seemed always to suffer an unfair comparison to their French co-patriots Ange. With this album they definitely prove that they are worthy of appreciation on their own merit by producing some excellent music. Very lyrical and introvert, this is a classic symphonic style Prog.

  | TIEMKO ~ OCEAN MUSEA 4013 ~ FRANCE ~ Progressive Rock
2nd album from 1990 by this pioneering French Prog band, one of the first bands of the second generation. This instrumental and somewhat `dark` music was quite innovative and daring at the time and it aged well, which means that it is a damn good listen today as well. Stylistically it moves from KC to jazz-rock to conteporary classical. Very much worth a listen.

  | ZAO ~ SHEKINA MUSEA 4067 (Barcode: 3426300040671) ~ FRANCE ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1975 Released: 1992
3rd album by the superb French ensemble ZaoFind albums by this artist. Following the recording of the first two albums, the two leaders, Yochk`o SefferFind albums by this artist and François CahenFind albums by this artist, decided to expand the musical scope of the group by adding a string quartet and writing some music which would combine the jazzy elements they explored earlier with some classically influenced orchestration. To emphasize the diversity of the two approaches, the decision was to find an all-female string quartet, which would complete the all-male group and balance the overall result. The Quatuor MargandFind albums by this artist, a seasoned string quartet, which had previous experience of working with jazz musicians, was chosen to work with Zao and they performed together and recorded this great album. The group also changed the bass player and Gerard PrevostFind albums by this artist fitted the bill perfectly with his pulsating approach, playing electric bass. Pierre GuignonFind albums by this artist was added on percussion to complete the nonet. The resulting ensemble was absolutely amazing, playing music aeons ahead of their time, which probably was the reason that even in France, which was always open to Avant-Garde, they had a tough time to find gigs. This led eventually to the inevitable breakdown of this unique lineup. The use of strings would however continue, with the young violin prodigy Didier LockwoodFind albums by this artist joining the group for their next lineup. The album remains an extraordinary example of European Avant-Garde Fusion and remains as fascinating as it was at the time of its recording.

Recorded exactly a year after their sensational debut (Z=7LFind albums with this title), the lineup is almost identical, except for the singer Mauricia PlatonFind albums by this artist, who left the group in the meantime. As usual almost all the music was composed by Yochk`o SefferFind albums by this artist and François CahenFind albums by this artist, who are able to create a magical mix of Prog, Jazz and contemporary Classical elements with an innovative approach unparalleled at the time by no other group. The saxophone, keyboards and electric violin solos are all excellent and the lengthy pieces constantly change paste and melody lines. Female lead vocals and great instrumental performances by the group members make this album a most welcome addition to the Prog collection, especially in view of the fact that there is unfortunately so little Prog produced in their country.

Cast are the best Mexican Prog band and this album is another great release which justifies their international fame. Excellent musicianship and great vocals create a true Prog feel, reminding the great founders (Genesis) but being firmly in the present with modern sound and use of studio technology. Cast are very prolific and hopefully their output will continue on the same level.

  | TAAL ~ MISTER GREEN MUSEA 4348 ~ FRANCE ~ Progressive Rock
1st album from 2000 by this French Prog band, which created quite a stirr in the Prog circles upon its release. The inventive and innovative music has been compared to anything between Pink Floyd, KC and Zappa. Rich instrumentation using a plethora of instruments, a sense of humor and great talent are evident all over. Considered by many as one of the best albums in recent time.

  | PIERRE MOERLEN / GONG ~ FULL CIRCLE - LIVE 1988 MUSEA 4386 (Barcode: 3426300043863) ~ FRANCE ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1988 Released: 2001
Drummer Pierre MoerlenFind albums by this artist kept the name (and spirit) of GongFind albums by this artist alive for many years, leading a permanently changing lineup of mostly Fusion oriented musicians. Starting in the mid-1970s, Gong under his leadership kept the original name and later (in the 1980s) the name of the band changed to Pierre Moerlen’s Gong, to avoid confusion with other parallel Gong-related projects led by other ex-Gong members. This version of the band played almost exclusively instrumental Jazz / Rock Fusion, which had almost nothing to do with the psychedelic direction of the original band. The various European musicians, who passed through the band’s ranks, were all excellent players and Moerlen’s compositions were ideal vehicles for lengthy improvisations. This particular version of the band emphasized the vibes as the leading instruments with two vibraphonists in the lead. The sound of the live recording (originally a cassette recording) is surprisingly clear and the music spirited and very exciting. Lost for many years, it surfaced again many years after the original concert, for all of us to admire and cherish. Most enjoyable Fusion experience.

Debut album by this powerful and talented Italian Prog-Metal band. 2nd album by brilliant Finnish Symphonic Prog band KhatsaturjanFind albums by this artist and a masterpiece of the genre. Their 1st album (an EP called Aramsome SumsFind albums with this title, which was never officially released) pointed already in the direction, but this debut full album really hits the nail right on the head. As the band’s name suggests, they are deeply rooted in classical music (especially Russian classical music) and indeed started by playing modernized versions of classical pieces and only later opted to compose original material. The quartet consists of: Jaakko KoikkalainenFind albums by this artist – bass, keyboards, vocals & guitar, Atte KurriFind albums by this artist – guitars, keyboards & vocals, Ilkka PiispalaFind albums by this artist – drums, keyboards & vocals and Ilkka SaarikiviFind albums by this artist – keyboards, cello & vocals. They all have years of musical studies behind them, which is very apparent from the phenomenal performances heard herein. Considering that all four of them play keyboards and sing, the overall effect they are able to achieve is massive and truly symphonic and choral in scope. There are very few other Prog groups that ever (if at all) achieved the same level of compositional sophistication and orchestral execution, but if parallels must be drown, imagine NiceFind albums by this artist being accompanied by QueenFind albums by this artist vocals. This is an amazing piece of music, which should be cherished by every Prog fan on this planet and heard by all music lovers, but alas I’m afraid the reality is sadly different.

1st album by Japanese Prog / Fusion quartet Side StepsFind albums by this artist, which was one of the most promising and interesting debut Fusion albums of the 1990s. The band features the classic guitar / keyboards / bass / drums lineup and plays amazing instrumental music, usually at neck-breaking speed. These young musicians seem to have mastered their instruments from the cradle, otherwise it’s quite impossible to explain the virtuosity displayed here. The compositions are equally strong, which makes this album a particularly enjoyable experience. Stylistically the band borrows some of their elements from UzebFind albums by this artist, Allan HoldsworthFind albums by this artist and many other (mostly European) Fusion masters, but they definitely have enough originality to be considered masters on their own. 4th album by Japanese Prog trio Ars NovaFind albums by this artist, which plays a modern version of music first created by groups like NiceFind albums by this artist, TraceFind albums by this artist or RefugeeFind albums by this artist. So far nothing extraordinary, but considering the fact that all three players are female changes the picture a bit. Since I’m a big admirer of female musicians, who are not intimidated by the male-dominated world of Prog (in particular) and Music (in general). Of course the fact that they are female isn’t enough to make Ars Nova the superb group it is – but their talents as composers and instrumentalists. The band’s albums are mostly extensive and complex concept works, based on literary or mythical themes. This one is no exception with a story line based on a Science Fiction futuristic idea. On this one the band gets a huge cast of supporting / guest artist (many of them Prog legends), who are members of groups like Balletto Di BronzoFind albums by this artist, PFMFind albums by this artist, GerardFind albums by this artist, AyeronFind albums by this artist and others. The keyboards parts are imaginative and very well developed and the guest musicians all contribute excellent support to make it all work. | HOT FUR ~ HOT FUR MUSEA 4593 ~ ISRAEL ~ Progressive Rock
Israeli Prog releases are rare enough to make every new appearance a celebration. This album was recorded by the Israeli Prog ensemble in 1998 and had to wait for 7 years untill the French label Musea decided to release it (with a bonus track recorded in 2005 especially for this occasion). Led by guitarist and composer Lior Frenkel, Hot Fur create a very interesting mixture of Prog, Avant-Garde rock and some jazz, with numerous surprising tempo and melody changes and unearthy vocals. In short this is the kind of album in which you keep discovering new things every time you listen to it. It firmly establishes Israel on the map of places where some interesting musical things do happen (although sadly not too often).

  | LU7 ~ EFFLORESCENCE MUSEA 4638 (Barcode: 3426300046383) ~ JAPAN ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 2002 - 2006 Released: 2006
1st album by LU7Find albums by this artist, one of the hottest new Japanese instrumental Prog ensembles, which is basically a duo of Luna UmegakiFind albums by this artist – keyboards and Tsutomu KuriharaFind albums by this artist – guitar, with occasional guest musicians. Both players are superb instrumentalists and gifted composers and the album is a true delight from start to finish. The music is melodic, but has enough internal tension to sustain interest. There is a strong jazzy feel and the album could be classified as fusion, but since the emphasis is more on the melody than on the rhythmic patterns, I decided to stick with Prog. The guitarist is influenced by Pat MethenyFind albums by this artist and Allan HoldsworthFind albums by this artist, but has a definite personal sound and style. Guitar freaks will delight in his explorations. The (female) keyboards player provides most of the multi-layered sounds, which are elegant and imaginative. Her solos are mostly done on acoustic piano, which sounds excellent on top of the synthesized background. In short a great surprise and a superb debut album by all standards. One bonus track was added to the original Japanese album for the Musea release.

  | MOVING GELATINE PLATES ~ REMOVING MUSEA 4663 (Barcode: 3426300046635) ~ FRANCE ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 2006 Released: 2006
The excellent French Prog group Moving Gelatine PlatesFind albums by this artist recorded two albums in the early 1970s and a reunion album in 1980 (all 3 albums are included on the two reissue albums available on MuseaFind albums on this label) and then disappeared from the scene like most early groups. Almost 30 years later they reunited again and recorded this album, which of course created quite a buzz in the Prog community. Rather than trying to recreate their original style, the new album is quite different in most respects, except for the beautiful 1970s (retro) sound. In fact the albums sounds remarkably Canterbury, somewhere between Soft MachineFind albums by this artist and CaravanFind albums by this artist, and if I didn’t know the group I’d have been absolutely convinced that it is British. They also introduced some vocals (on 3 songs only) whereas previously their material was purely instrumental. The music is relaxed and very melodic, with strong jazzy undertones and plenty of great solos by the band members. All the music was composed by the group’s two founding members and is remarkably strong. In short this album should appeal to most Prog lovers, not only those who are familiar with the band’s original output.

2nd album by the excellent Finnish Prog band Scarlet ThreadFind albums by this artist. As everybody knows, I have a real soft spot for Finnish music, therefore every new album from the Nordic shores is always a source of excitement, especially when it is as good as this one. The group includes two guitar players, who provide the rocky parts, but basically they are heavily influences by ethnic motifs, which makes them as much a folk-rock ensemble as a Prog group (in fact I was hesitant how categorize them by genre). The usual keyboards spot is occupied by a violin player and they also use guest flute players, creating a much softer sound than one might expect form a group fronted by two guitarists. The tracks which include the flute are remarkably similar to some early Jethro TullFind albums by this artist pieces (mind you associatively only). The folk inspired melodies are enchanting and provide a great vehicle for instrumental solos. Definitely worth serious investigation, especially for more folk-inspired Progheads.

All the musicians are well schooled and highly skilled and playing a wide array of instruments between themselves enables them to create highly complex and dense sound vistas.
Although they released several informal albums over the years, the first formal album was released in 2003 (TrajectoriesFind albums with this title) and this is a most anticipated follow up. Didorenko composed all the music except one track, which is an adaptation of a Dmitri ShostakovichFind albums by this artist chamber piece.
The entire atmosphere of the album can be described as electric Chamber music, typical of Easter European Prog, which is deeply rooted in the classical tradition. This is fascinating stuff, which requires repetitive listening to be truly appreciated, but hold many intricate gems and wonderful musical ideas. Highly recommended!

  | OSIRIS ~ VISIONS FROM THE PAST MUSEA 4697 (Barcode: 3426300046970) ~ BAHRAIN ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 2006 Released: 2007
5th album by OsirisFind albums by this artist, a Prog band from one of the most unlikely places one might think as source of Prog – the tiny Bahrain in the Persian Gulf. The band released a couple of splendid studio albums in the 1980s and a live album in 1991 and this is their most welcome return to “active duty”, presenting the first studio recording in almost 20 years. As appropriate for Prog, this is a concept album about the change countries like Bahrain went through in the last two decades, expressing the longing for lost ways of life and values. Sparse vocals (in English) and recitation of poetry (in Arabic) ornament the mostly instrumental material with grace. The music of Osiris is a splendid example of integration between classic Symphonic Prog approach and local folklore, in this case the beautiful Arabic / Middle Eastern music. Sadly only very few Prog groups ever attempted this marriage of cultures (the only other example is the French / Turkish group Asia MinorFind albums by this artist). Prog fans, which enjoy multi-cultural crossovers, should have a field day with this excellent album.

The band uses an ad hoc lineup for each of its releases, this time adding three members and creating a powerful sound. The band bases its music on the work of the legendary Pink FloydFind albums by this artist, but they are not a typical tribute band. They did contribute some Pink Floyd tracks to various tribute albums, but their own albums include original music only, obviously inspired by their mentors. This album is a concept album dealing (as the title suggests) with the meaning of colors. The music is interesting and the long tracks (one being over 15 minutes) have plenty of space to develop and feature extended instrumental solos. The overall atmosphere is very Pink Floyd influenced, but definitely not to the extent of being plagiarist. People who love Pink Floyd will find this right up their alley, others might just like them for what they are.

  | CAST ~ COM.UNION MUSEA 4716 (Barcode: 3426300047168) ~ MEXICO ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 2007 Released: 2007
Mexican Prog Masters CastFind albums by this artist are the country’s most stable and consistent representative of the genre. Formed in 1978 by keyboards player Alfonso VidalesFind albums by this artist, the bend went through numerous personnel changes over the years, but always managed to maintain a very high musical standard playing Symphonic Prog at its best. With over 20 albums under their belt (studio, live and compilations) they are surely very prolific, producing steadily at least one album a year. In addition the band is also the organizer and host of the annual Baja Prog Festival in Mexicali, Mexico – one of the very few festivals dedicated exclusively to Prog. This album (latest so far) is another typical Cast production, with multi-layered keyboards and screaming lead guitar dominating the mostly instrumental pieces. This time the compositions are relatively concise (averaging in about 6 minutes each) in contrast to the 30 minutes long epic creations featured on several earlier albums. Alfonso Vidales composed all the music (as usual) and he plays a myriad of keyboards with skill and evident genius. Guitar and flute solos ornament the music, which flows between lyrical ballads and highly energetic powerful eruptions. Definitely a must for all Cast fans around the globe and a great introduction to the band for those who are not familiar with their music so far. Highly recommended!

After leading the Japanese Prog scene for many years in the 1980s and releasing several excellent albums, Outer LimitsFind albums by this artist disappeared from the scene only to be reunited and to record a new album 20 years after their last studio effort. Keyboards player Shusei TsukamotoFind albums by this artist, who writes most of the music for the band, now leads the quintet. Violinist Takashi KawaguchiFind albums by this artist is the most impressive player in the band with truly virtuoso ability. His lyrical parts are deeply moving but he also swings on the up-tempo pieces. The music is extremely impressive, with evident links to contemporary Classical music and at times touching upon late King CrimsonFind albums by this artist’s legacy. The vocals (sung in English) are sparse and bear little effect on the mostly instrumental material. This is definitely not the kind of material a casual Prog listener might enjoy, as the music requires intensive contemplation and repeated savoring. The overall atmosphere is rather somber and overwhelming, but the music is eventually deeply rewarding. Absolutely brilliant!

  | OAKSENHAM ~ CONQUEST OF THE PACIFIC MUSEA 4727 (Barcode: 3426300047274) ~ ARMENIA ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 2006 Released: 2007
2nd album by the phenomenal Prog band OaksenhamFind albums by this artist from Armenia, following the privately issued debut. The instrumental sextet (flute, violin, guitar, keyboards, bass and drums) and several guest musicians (harp and a woodwind ensemble) have at their disposal the power of an entire chamber orchestra, which suits their music perfectly. The music itself is a magnificent amalgam of Classical and classic Prog, which is sometimes called Chamber Prog, but it truly goes beyond all attempts of categorization. Most of it is original, including the incredible suite (almost half-hour long), composed by the band’s bassist Vahagn PapayanFind albums by this artist, which gives the album its title. The band did include two covers of Gentle GiantFind albums by this artist tunes (“Talybont” and “On Reflection”), obviously in an attempt to disclose their influences, but these superb arrangement enhance the original compositions to such a divine level that one could see them as new creations. The entire effect is completely stunning and I must admit I have never heard such a perfect cross-genre amalgamation before. This music is such a great example of how musical ideas can grow in the future, with no limitations and pre-conceptions. This is a delicious meal of musical intelligence, complexity, ingenuity and good taste. Definitely the best Prog album of 2007 and one that should join the very few albums that truly deserve to become a part of Prog’s canon for future generation to enjoy and admire. The fact that it comes from Armenia of all places only proves that the main focus on music creativity moved away from the historical cradles of Prog. Any music lover, even strictly Classical music listeners, should be able to delight in this magnificent opus and for Prog fans this is as essential as air. Absolutely essential!

  | TRESPASS ~ MORNING LIGHTS NOT ON LABEL (Barcode: 7290010781256) ~ ISRAEL ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 2004 - 2005 Released: 2006
2nd album by Israeli trio TrespassFind albums by this artist. The band achieved worldwide recognition after their debut album was released on the French MuseaFind albums on this label label in 2002 and was accepted warmly by Prog fans. Gil SteinFind albums by this artist, who plays a multitude of keyboard instruments and recorders and occasionally sings, leads the trio. He is also the main composer and on this album he composed two and co-composed another two tracks. The fifth track is the band’s adaptation of Vivaldi’s violin concerto in A minor. Listeners familiar with the band’s debut album will find this one quite different. Gone is the feverish, faster then light racing on the keyboards; the music is now firmly based on classical music, with frequent quotations reminiscent of Baroque Masters. The compositions are solid and very well developed, with many themes and tempo changes. The similarity to bands like NiceFind albums by this artist, RefugeeFind albums by this artist, TraceFind albums by this artist, etc. is obvious, especially due to the sound, which is (purposely I assume) very 70’s. I’m personally very happy to see the band fulfill the high hopes we all had and produce an album, which can easily compare (if not overshadow) to any other Prog album produced anywhere else in the world. This again strengthens the fact that something truly wonderful is happening on the Israeli scene since the beginning of the 21st Century with a long streak of impressive new albums being produced one after another.
