DON AIREY ~ ONE OF A KIND (EXTENDED EDITION)
EAR MUSIC 4029759126393 (Barcode: 4029759126393) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 2016 - 2017 Released: 2018

This is the 6th studio album by British Rock keyboardist Don AireyFind albums by this artist, primarily known as a member of the iconic Deep PurpleFind albums by this artist, where he replaced Jon LordFind albums by this artist in 2001. The album was recorded with vocalist Carl SentanceFind albums by this artist, guitarist Simon McBrideFind albums by this artist, bassist Laurence CottleFind albums by this artist and drummer Jon FinniganFind albums by this artist. The album presents eleven tracks, ten songs and one instrumental, all originals co-written by Airey, Sentance and McBride. This Extended Edition includes a second CD with live material recorded by the same band in Hamburg, not including any of the songs from the studio album.

Not surprisingly, the album sounds quite similar to Deep Purple, a mixture of Classic Rock and melodic Hard Rock, brilliantly performed by all these seasoned instrumentalists and with superb vocals by Sentence. All the songs on the album are just perfect for this kind of music, and although they sound as if originating some fifty years earlier, this is exactly what some of us like to hear occasionally.

Airey plays some brilliant keyboard parts as does McBride, again in perfect tradition of the 1970s, and these musicians know exactly what they are doing, note after note. If someone likes the music of Deep Purple, it is simply impossible not to like this stuff. And of course they are every bit as good live as they are in the studio!

Overall, this is a perfect extension of the music of Deep Purple, and for the many fans the band still has around the world, this is exactly what the doctor prescribed. Excellent musicianship and vocals make this a true delight from start to finish. A taste of grandmother’s cake? Who cares, if you were born at the right period, you know what I mean…

TOM ARTHURS ~ ONE YEAR
OZELLA 077 (Barcode: 4038952000775) ~ UK ~ Avant-Garde Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 2016 Released: 2018

This is an album by British trumpeter / composer Tom ArthursFind albums by this artist recorded in a trio format with his long time collaborator pianist Richard FairhurstFind albums by this artist and Finnish drummer Markku OunaskariFind albums by this artist. The album presents six original compositions, all by Arthurs.

The music is beautifully intimate, with melodic themes sketched lightly and later improvised upon just by being gently touched by the trio members, like a balloon floating in the air. Obviously minimalist and brilliantly transparent, the music is deeply moving and in complete contrast to its form completely overwhelming and mesmerizing.

All three musicians are masters of achieving the maximum effect with a minimal number of notes and sounds. As a result the music they create consists as much of the sounds they produce as of the silence trapped within the music. The calmness and the elegance of this music are completely unique and stand above most of contemporary Jazz / Improvised Music efforts of this kind.

Arthurs indicates that the inspiration to his open compositions originates in the process of cinematic work by the Russian director Anderi TarkovskyFind albums by this artist (especially the making of his masterpiece "Mirrors"), which was based on filming a huge amount of scenes and then shuffling the selected material around until the end product was finally reached. Arthurs describes his process of creating the music on this album as "Composing like Tarkovsky", which in his case manages to achieve the same astounding outcome as in the case of Tarkovsky´s movies.

It is impossible to categorize this music by the existing genre categories, as it escapes classification, perhaps even pointing to a new musical direction, which is based on European modernism but incorporates all the beauty and emotion from all known genres and is an absolute mind-blowing and soul-expanding experience. "Quiet is the new loud", which was initially coined to describe the Nordic pop music, is hereby expanded to apply to all contemporary music.

Perhaps subconsciously, but unmistakably, this album marks a new phase for British Jazz as well, with the Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist / John TaylorFind albums by this artist spirit omnipresent here, but taken a step further no doubt.

Overall this is a magnificent piece of music, one of the best to arrive on my desk in 2018, and wholeheartedly recommended to everybody who still looks at music as a source of joy and enlightenment.

KARLIS AUZINS ~ ONENESS AND THE TRANSCENDENT TRUTH
GOTTA LET IT OUT 43 (Barcode: 5707471064658) ~ LATVIA ~ Avant-Garde Jazz

Recorded: 2019 Released: 2019

This is a solo saxophone album by Latvian Avant-Garde Jazz saxophonist / composer Karlis AuzinsFind albums by this artist, one of the most interesting upcoming European Jazz musicians. The album presents eight original compositions, all by Auzins.

Solo albums, especially those in the Avant-Garde idiom, are usually somewhere between extremely trying to absolutely unlistenable. But this masterpiece is something from a completely different frame of reference. Recorded using exclusively "the acoustic sound possibilities of the saxophone", this album offers an amazing kaleidoscope of sounds, which often are hard to believe as originating from saxophone, using the vibrations and natural harmonics of the instrument, as well as its percussive possibilities.

There is very little of what is expected as "saxophone playing" per se and most of the music is created unconventionally, using the instrument to produce most unearthly sounds. And yet all this bizarre cascade of sounds makes perfect sense, creating altogether highly emotional and obviously fascinating sonic vistas, which take the instrument into interstellar space.

Obviously describing this music, as already demonstrated above, is completely futile. This is way beyond words and all I can say is that this is definitely some of the most exciting, unusual and daring musical ventures I have heard in 2019, and I have heard a lot of albums, and I mean A LOT!

Auzins is an Artist to be watched and his output so far is already quite remarkable, so God only knows what he will come up with next. In the meantime grab this piece of magic and your life will not be dull again ;)

BADGER ~ ONE LIVE BADGER
VOICEPRINT 275 ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Long awaited reissue of the only album by this band from 1972 and a great treat to all Yes fans, who were trying to find this since ages. Badger was formed by Tony Kaye upon leaving the keyboards chair in Yes, with some of the best players on the scene at that time. This album, recorded live, is unfortunately the only recorded testimony of this great band. Famous Roger Dean cover (his first!).

BEAM ~ ONE
MULTIKULTI MPJ 016 (Barcode: 5907796319802) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2016 Released: 2017

This is the debut album by the BEAMFind albums by this artist quartet, led by Polish Jazz saxophonist Bartosz CzarnieckiFind albums by this artist, which also includes Polish bassist Michal NienadowskiFind albums by this artist and Danish guitarist Anna RoemerFind albums by this artist and drummer Emil ThorenfeldtFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine tracks, seven of which are original compositions, all by Czarniecki, and two are arrangement of Polish Folk tunes.

The music is very unique and immediately strikingly different from most other contemporary young Jazz efforts. Although definitely Jazz oriented, it sounds like a Progressive Folk album, with a very strong tendency towards folklore music, this of course thanks to the superb compositions by the leader, but also as a result of a very unusual sound and balance between the instruments. Although the guitar is electric, the entire performance sounds completely acoustic and has a distinct retro ambience.

The performances are beautifully minimalistic, with a lot of breathing space and silence between the notes. There is no rush or unnecessary urgency, which again is elegantly dissimilar from just about everything done these says. Obviously there is no competition between the players and the quartet´s leader leaves the spotlight to the guitar player, supporting her intelligently and balancing the overall result just right, and playing just a few wonderful solos himself. The duo performs closely together, with perfect harmony and close comradeship. The rhythm section carries the music amicably and steadily throughout and keeps also respectfully in the background not dominating the proceedings, which is exactly what is needed in this case.

Overall this is a remarkable debut album, which manages to present an original approach to Jazz, soaked with folksy melancholy, creating a coherent, aesthetically solid piece of music. Full of beautiful melodic statements and inspired improvisations, and at the same time keeping things at a minimal level of unnecessary complexity, as the "more is less" approach advocates. I am already anxious to hear their next album. Definitely not to be missed!

GORDON BECK ~ ONE FOR THE ROAD
JMS 077 (Barcode: 3383001867528) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1995 Released: 1995

This is a solo album by British Jazz keyboardist / composer / bandleader Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist, which features him playing acoustic and electric pianos, organ and synthesizers. The album presents nine tracks, all original compositions by Beck. It was released on the French JMSFind albums on this label Records, owned by Jean-Marie SalhaniFind albums by this artist, one of the most important European Jazz record producers. Beck was associated with the label for many years and recorded several albums for the label.

In order to avoid confusion, it should be noted that the album’s title is identical to the title of Beck’s debut solo album, recorded in 1976 and released a year later on the tiny (but superb) JaguarFind albums on this label label, which still remains unreleased on CD and is a highly sought-after collectors’ item. Seven of the compositions from that album appear also on this album, which makes it a re-make of sorts, which is a fascinating opportunity to compare the two recordings bridging almost a twenty-years gap.

The music is, as always, a brilliant example of Beck’s lyricism and superb keyboard technique, which made him one of leading British keyboardist on the local scene. He was a sublime accompanist and played with many leading figures, but his recordings as a leader where always excellent examples of melodic modern Jazz, although he could play Free Form if appropriate for a given moment.

Overall, this is a brilliant solo keyboards album, full of great music and exceptional performances, most notable on the acoustic piano. Sometimes romantic and at other moments experimental and adventurous, his music is always an uplifting experience. His death in 2011 was a great loss to all music lovers and to the British Jazz scene at large.

JOHN COLTRANE ~ ONE DOWN, ONE UP: LIVE AT THE HALF NOTE
IMPULSE! 602498621431 (Barcode: 602498621431) ~ USA ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

Recorded: 1965 Released: 2005

This is an archival album by iconic American saxophonist / composer John ColtraneFind albums by this artist and his legendary quartet with pianist McCoy TynerFind albums by this artist, bassist Jimmy GarrisonFind albums by this artist and drummer Elvin JonesFind albums by this artist. The album presents two sessions recorded on March 26 and May 7, 1965, recorded by the radio station WABC-FM, which used to broadcast the Friday concerts under the “Portraits Of Jazz” moniker. These two sessions were recorded in between the two studio sessions that resulted in the “The John Coltrane Quartet PlaysFind albums with this title” album.

Each of the two sessions presents just two lengthy improvisations, together four tracks, lasting between 12+ to 27+ minutes. The title track, which is also the longest track on this album, is also the longest Coltrane solo ever recorded, most of which is a duo between him and Jones.

There is no sense of writing about this music really… Endless stream of words was already written about Coltrane and his music: articles, books, documentaries, etc., none of which are able to even come close to describe his music and the genius of his creative process. Obviously sometimes music is just beyond words. Therefore, I’ll just share my retrospective reflections here.

1965 was undoubtedly the year when the music of Coltrane peaked, or at least the music he played, which was still connected to his Jazz roots and tradition and before his rapid musical progression will take him into interstellar dimensions and his music would become completely spontaneously improvised.

For the sharp-eared listeners it should be fascinating to note the differences between the music played just six weeks apart, a seemingly completely insignificant period of time in a life of a musician, but in case of Coltrane, who was already traveling at the speed of light, the transformation is colossal. His meditative playing and the cry of anguish he produced were already the Coltrane of the last two years of his life, which led to the disintegration of the classic quartet captured here.

Coltrane played in this tiny / dinky NY club for a ridiculously small audience, whereas in Europe and Japan his concerts were attended by thousands of appreciative fans. That much for the American Jazz scene…

And of course the most daunting of all the reflections about Jazz music: this album proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that the development of Free Jazz / Improvised Music reached its peak in the mid-1960s and nothing, I mean NOTHING, happened in that idiom, which might be considered as expanding the limits of that music ever since. The idiom still exists but it is sadly completely stagnant.

Since these recordings were not included in any of the Coltrane Box Sets and were only released for the first time forty years after they were recorded, this is an absolute must for every Coltrane follower.

WOLFGANG DAUNER / CHARLIE MARIANO / DINO SALUZZI ~ ONE NIGHT IN `88
MOOD 33.623 ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1988 Released: 1988

This is the debut album by the trio comprising of German Jazz pianist / composer Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist, American saxophonist Charlie MarianoFind albums by this artist and Argentinian bandoneon player Dino SaluzziFind albums by this artist. The album presents four lengthy tracks, two composed by Saluzzi and one each by Mariano and Dauner. The album was recorded during just one studio session.

The music is a wonderful tribute to the Tango, with original music by these excellent musicians, but close in spirit to the unique Tango mood, transferred into the Jazz environment. The interplay and obvious mutual respect and comradeship prevail and the music offers many slightly different approaches to the Tango idiom, full of brilliant improvisations, as appropriate for such Masters. Saluzzi is one of my all-time favorite bandoneonists and his playing is always full of true passion.

Overall, this is almost completely unknown gem, as all the releases on the small independent MoodFind albums by this artist Records label, co-owned by Dauner, which is definitely worth searching for, as this music was created with the single purpose of making heartfelt, creative music, free of any commercial, market oriented motives.

The music, firmly rooted in the Jazz tradition, embraces a cross-genre attitude, wandering into other territories, like atmospheric ambient or contemporary Classical music. This is definitely the more introvert and gentle side of this great musician. The album yet again emphasizes DeJohnette´s pivotal role in modern Jazz, always in the epicenter of creative breakthroughs. Recommended!

OTTO HEJNIC ~ ONE
HEVHETIA 0060 (Barcode: 8588002496899) ~ CZECH REPUBLIC ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2011 Released: 2012

This is the debut album by Czech Jazz drummer / pianist / composer Otto HejnicFind albums by this artist, recorded in a classic trio format with pianist Ondrej KrajnakFind albums by this artist and bassist Josef FecoFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine original compositions, all by Hejnic. Eight of the compositions are performed by the trio and one is a solo piano piece performed by Hejnic.

Hejnic continues the fabulous Czech Jazz piano composition tradition, developed by such giants like Emil ViklickyFind albums by this artist, Karel RuzickaFind albums by this artist and others, which continues to be developed by the younger generation of Czech musicians. The compositions presented here are all mature, beautifully melodic and sophisticated. Both the lyrical ballads and the up tempo pieces show first class compositional skills, characterized by highly aesthetic approach and obvious passion.

Hejnic wisely passed the task of playing the piano onto Krajnak, who emerges as one of the most skilled East European pianists, as documented by his other recordings. Feco, who plays with Krajnak on other recordings, is an absolute virtuoso bass player, and his extraordinary skills are plainly evident on this album from start to finish. Hejnic plays the drums set dynamically and always shoulder to shoulder with his cohorts, which being also a pianist probably helps considerably. The trio performance is simply fabulous. The sound quality and the recording are also excellent, which turns this album into a true piano trio gem.

Overall this is a most impressive debut album by Hejnic, who emerges primarily as a remarkable composer but also as a first rate performer. The trio performance is simply exemplary. Very highly recommended to all piano trio aficionados and Jazz connoisseurs the world over!

JACEK KOCHAN ~ ONE EYED HORSE
GOWI 61 (Barcode: 786497357024) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2005 Released: 2005

Polish drummer / composer / arranger Jacek KochanFind albums by this artist is one of the country´s most active music leaders with an impressive and prolific career in both Jazz and contemporary experimental music. Kochan spent considerable periods of time living, studying and performing in the USA and Canada and upon his return to Poland in the mid 1990s he swiftly established his position as a central figure on the local scene. Since then he recorded a considerable number of albums as a leader, co-leader and sideman with many musicians from around Europe and the US as well as local musicians of course.

This is a document of one of such projects, which features US saxophonist Greg OsbyFind albums by this artist and Austrian trumpeter Franz HautzingerFind albums by this artist. They perform a set of fifteen compositions, all by Kochan, which are duets between the drums and electronically produced sounds (loops, samples, etc.), courtesy of Kochan and one of the two soloists playing with him. Some vocal parts, mostly mixed into the background, are performed by the Polish Jazz vocalist Krystyna StankoFind albums by this artist. The music is very difficult to categorize and although Jazz is the general idiom here, it moves smoothly between pretty melodic mainstream, funky passages, ambient soundscapes and almost Free Jazz, all in one tune and very swiftly.

Kochan is a master atmosphere builder with his array of rhythmic tricks and electronic sound effects, which provides a full-fledged basis for the soloists to improvise on top of it. As far as originality and uniqueness are concerned, one need to look no further, as this album simple explodes with completely innovative sounds and ideas. Of course the music is pretty demanding and attentive listening is a requirement, but the effort pays off in full.

Both Osby and Hautzinger play really beautifully and seem to enjoy the unusual setting to the fullest, as evident from the resulting music. Since words are hardly adequate to describe sonic experiences, the obvious thing to do is of course to listen to this incredible music. I can only hope that my wholehearted recommendation will prompt some people to give it a try, as it is definitely too good to be ignored. This is modern Jazz at its best, which actually manages to expand the boundaries of the genre, which is rare indeed. A must!

CEZARY KONRAD ~ ONE MIRROR… MANY REFLECTIONS
SELLES 0182 (Barcode: 5908260401825) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

The album includes nine original compositions, all by Konrad.

Most of the music on this album is closely associated with Jazz-Rock Fusion, obviously influenced by the work of Allan HoldsworthFind albums by this artist and his groups. The electric fretless bass and synthesizers and of course the sound of the guitar imitate almost exactly the sound of European Fusion popular during the 1990s. The compositions are all quite interesting, with nice melodic themes and interesting harmonic approach, but overall the music is not remarkable enough to leave a deep impression, certainly not leaving a lasting impression.

The personal contributions are all quite excellent, with all the participants obviously being highly skilled musicians. There are some impressive solos and the overall level of playing is certainly satisfactory. Surprisingly the highlight of the album is the acoustic piano performance by Mozdzer on the only track, which is actually not a Fusion piece.

In retrospect, the album definitely sounded better at the time of its recording than now and does not withstand the tides of time well. This is unfortunately the fate of most Fusion albums, which proved to be mostly repetitive and derivative, with a very few exceptions.

This is a compilation / reissue / remaster album by the Norwegian Jazz singer Karin KrogFind albums by this artist, with tracks compiled from three duo albums recorded between 1977 and 1980 by Swedish producer Frank HedmanFind albums by this artist, all sadly never reissued on CD. The album presents eighteen tracks, most of which are standards or improvisations of Folklore or Classical Music themes.

Tracks 1 to 6 were taken from the album “But Three`s A CrowdFind albums with this title”, recorded in 1977 with American (resident in Sweden) bassist Red MitchellFind albums by this artist.

Tracks 7 to 14 were taken from the album “A Song For YouFind albums with this title”, recorded in 1977 with Swedish pianist Bengt HallbergFind albums by this artist.

Tracks 15 to 18 were taken from the album “With Malice Towards NoneFind albums with this title”, recorded in 1980 with Swedish organist Nils LindbergFind albums by this artist.

The album is a wonderful testimony of Krog’s love of the duo setting, where she seems to feel very comfortable and is the format for many of her albums. The “Art of the Duo” is a perfect description of these tracks. She recorded additional album with these musicians over the years of course.

Overall, this is brilliant music, which thanks to this reissue can be heard again, rather than disappear in the past. Krog has very few competitors as a Jazz vocalist, with her idiosyncratic approach and incredible feel, and her superb recorded legacy accumulated over the years is a true treasure chest. This is an absolute must to vocal Jazz enthusiasts.

O.N.E. ~ ONE
AUDIO CAVE 2020/007 (Barcode: 5908298549063) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2019 Released: 2020

This is the debut album by Polish Jazz ensemble O.N.E.Find albums by this artist comprising of five female representatives of the young generation of the local scene: saxophonist Monika MucFind albums by this artist, violinist Dominika RusinowskaFind albums by this artist, pianist Paulina AtmanskaFind albums by this artist, bassist Kamila DrabekFind albums by this artist and drummer Patrycja WybranczykFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven pieces, three composed by Muc, two by Atamanska, one traditional tune and one composition by Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artist.

The music is quite characteristic of the young Polish Jazz scene; full of melancholy and folkloristic influences, strictly melody based but with open space for improvisation and soloing. The rather unusual instrumental lineup (see violin) creates a particular sound, which takes time to get used to. These Ladies have of course perfect schooling and a lot of playing experience behind them, which results in spotless execution, both by the front line and the rhythm section.

The original compositions are well structured, albeit a bit hesitant in their nature, which results in a certain lack of focus, as far as the album as a whole is concerned. But considering the fact that this is a debut offering, this is a minor point and can be easily forgiven.

This album offers a perfect opportunity to exam the timeless issue of "Women´s Jazz", which always annoys me. I´d rather leave gender out of music the same way we should avoid dealing with race or religion. We should concentrate on giving woman equal opportunity instead. As this album proves, women can be certainly as creative, adventurous and clever as men in every aspect of life.

Overall this is an important debut, which hopefully will open a recording continuance for this gathering of Jazz Amazons (daughters of Harmonia), for the years to come. Definitely worth investigating!

OLES BROTHERS ~ ONE STEP FROM THE PAST
FENOMMEDIA 014 (Barcode: 5907604327142) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2011 Released: 2016

This is a beautiful album by the Polish Jazz duo comprising of two brothers: bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist, collectively known as the Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist. Although they are, what in the Jazz world is known as a "rhythm section", and not just any rhythm section but by far one of the top European rhythm sections at that, but in fact they are much more than just a rhythm section, often creating the notion that they are a two man orchestra. Of course they also write music, very exquisite music, they run their own record label and if all that does not suffice, they are a couple of wonderful human beings, which I am proud to call my friends.

The music presented on this album was recorded at the invitation of the BBC and intended for the prestigious "Jazz on 3" program. It was recorded at Studio S4 of Polish Radio in Warsaw and presents eight pieces, three of which were composed by Marcin, two by Bartlomiej, another two co-composed by both brothers and one is a standard.

For people unfamiliar with the Oles Brothers phenomenon it is quite impossible to imagine the depth and richness of the music this duo is capable of creating just by playing with each other. Although it might seem logical that the bass would play the melody and the drums the rhythm, nothing can be taken for granted with these guys and role reversal is perfectly normal for them. Of course there are many virtuosic bassist and drummers around, but there is hardly any bass / drums duo which comes even near to the level of inventiveness, imagination, creativity and elegance of this particular duo.

In many respects this music belongs to the moment it was created. Improvised music is often very impressive when performed live, but loses almost all of its value and meaning when it is recorded and made into an album in order to be reproduced repeatedly. Sometimes it is painful to listen to such music when it completely fails to reproduce the magic moment of its creation. The Oles Brothers have a great gift, which enables them to create music which sounds breathtakingly beautiful when played live, but also transforms perfectly into the recorded medium, as exemplified here. They are quite a singularity in that respect.

Many Polish Jazz musicians managed to create wonderful albums over the years, but only very few ones manage to maintain the same level of achievements and such consistency like the Oles Brothers, both as a duo and individually. Therefore each and every one of their albums is simply a must to every serious Jazz / Improvised Music connoisseur, this one included of course. Although this music is half a decade old at the time of its release, it is a perfect example of timelessness and intrinsic aesthetic values that exist outside of the fourth dimension´s scale. All I have to say is a humble thank you!

That period was also documented by the release of the original band’s BBC recordings on the HuxFind albums on this label label in 2004 (The Lost Broadcasts 1968-1972Find albums with this title). In 1984 two of Pentangle’s founding members singer Jacqui McSheeFind albums by this artist and guitarist John RenbournFind albums by this artist reformed the band again. This second incarnation of the band started off with the five original members but later on went through many personnel changes until the final version of the band crystallized around 1989 and kept together till 1994. This last version of the band included Jacqui, Bert JanschFind albums by this artist and three other Folk-Rock veterans: Nigel Portman-SmithFind albums by this artist (bass, piano and vocals – ex Magna CartaFind albums by this artist), Gerry ConwayFind albums by this artist (drums – ex FotheringayFind albums by this artist and Jethro TullFind albums by this artist) and Pete KirtleyFind albums by this artist (guitar - ex Alan Price SetFind albums by this artist, GriffinFind albums by this artist, Riff RaffFind albums by this artist and many other bands). The second Pentangle recorded also 6 albums, three of which were recorded by the last lineup above. Alas these albums are almost completely neglected and have been out of print for many years. This beautiful album brings us splendidly remastered versions of the last two Pentangle albums: One More RoadFind albums with this title – the last studio album and Live 1994Find albums with this title – their swan song. There is hardly any need to recommend these masterpieces to a serious Folk-Rock fan. Let’s just be grateful this material is available again and enjoy every minute of it to the fullest. Brilliant!

MARCO POSTACCHINI BIG BAND ~ ONE FINGER SNAP
ALFA MUSIC 269 (Barcode: 8032050022307) ~ ITALY ~ Big Band Jazz

Recorded: 2022 Released: 2022

This is an album by a Big Band led by Italian Jazz saxophonist / flautist / composer / arranger Marco PostacchiniFind albums by this artist. Two guest vocalists appear, each on two tracks. The album presents nine tracks, two of which are original compositions by the leader and the rest are Big Band arrangements of Jazz / Pop standards and Brazilian songs.

The music is all well within mainstream Jazz, with typical Big Band arrangements, strongly influenced by the American tradition of orchestral Jazz, with emphasis on uniform harmonious performances spiced by numerous soli by the participating musicians.

In contrast to the European Big Band tradition, which is more about the ensemble sound of the Big Band as a multi-headed performer, this album sounds similar to Count BasieFind albums by this artist or other Broadway orchestral ensembles, presenting a slick, polished and glamorous sound, which swings elegantly, inviting the listener to dance rather than listen attentively.

Nevertheless, the performances are highly professional, well-coordinated and technically perfect, and the music is very well recorded with good separation enabling the listener to hear the individual instruments.

Overall, this is a highly entertaining Big Band album, full of swinging music that makes the ass move involuntarily, and is a great fun to listen to. For listeners who love American Big Band music, which was at its peak in the middle of the last Century, this is heaven on earth.

PROCOL HARUM ~ ONE MORE TIME

The band performs a mixture of their classic material and pieces from the new album and considering the fact that this album was recorded at the very last concert of this tour they were in top shape, playing their hearts out. In contrast to many reunions by Rock bands, where the passing years show bluntly that the protagonists are way beyond their performing powers, this band kicks ass as powerfully as they did in the 1970s and anybody, who was their fan then will enjoy this brilliant music now. Definitely worth having!

NICK PURNELL ~ ONETWOTHREE
AH UM 006 ~ UK ~ Big Band Jazz

Recorded: 1990 Released: 1991

This is the only album by British Jazz composer / arranger Nick PurnellFind albums by this artist, recorded with a dreamy large Orchestra, which included such luminaries as trumpeter Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Julian ArguellesFind albums by this artist, trombonist Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Django BatesFind albums by this artist, pianist John TaylorFind albums by this artist and American drummer Peter ErskineFind albums by this artist among others. The album presents ten tracks, all original compositions by Purnell and arranged by him.

The music is absolutely dreamy large ensemble Jazz, based on superbly composed themes and perfectly arranged to utilize the superb lineup, that performs the music. Wheler, Taylor and Arguelles performs dazzling soli through the whole album, and many other musicians also get an opportunity to show their chops.

Although there are many musicians taking part in this recording, the music is rather subtle and delicate, which is rather typical of the British Jazz approach to orchestral music, which emphasizes the ensemble spirit and strong harmony, without utilizing the full power and might available, in favor of style and elegance, somewhat similar to the orchestral work by Michael Gibbs and his ensembles.

Overall, this is a lovely piece of orchestral British Jazz, sadly completely forgotten but absolutely worthy of being remembered. The album is probably not that easy to find, but if it crosses your field of vision, do not hesitate for even one moment, before you grab it!
Side Note
British composer / arranger Nick PurnellFind albums by this artist founded the short-lived Ah UmFind albums on this label label in 1989, which existed until 1993 and released a total of sixteen albums with some of the top British Jazz musicians of that period and a few American guests, which remain as of the finest recordings of that period. For some inexplicable reason all these albums are almost completely obsolete today, despite their excellent musical value, which is a shame, as they all deserve an honorable place in any decent British Jazz collection.

RGG ~ ONE
NOT ON LABEL (Barcode: 5905912559873) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2010 Released: 2011

This is the 5th album by the excellent Polish Jazz piano trio RGGFind albums by this artist, which comprises of pianist Przemyslaw RaminiakFind albums by this artist, bassist Maciej GarbowskiFind albums by this artist and drummer Krzysztof GradziukFind albums by this artist. Its release marks the trio´s tenth anniversary and adds a new direction to the remarkable body of music already recorded by the trio. In contrast to its predecessor, that included only spontaneously improvised music, most of the music on this album is composed, either by the trio members or other well known Jazz composers like Carla BleyFind albums by this artist and Richie BeirachFind albums by this artist. Of the thirteen compositions presented here only two are free improvisations, which is unusual for them.

All three RGG members are brilliant instrumentalists, but their performances together clearly create an outcome much bigger than the sum of its parts. The level of interplay, cooperation, mutual respect and understanding is truly phenomenal and the resulting music is able to move emotional mountains. To an attentive listener it is quite clear that even when they play relatively close to the original composition, RGG members display a high level of spontaneity, which is present only within the best piano trios in the world, like that of Keith JarrettFind albums by this artist, Gary PeacockFind albums by this artist and Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist. Another rare quality of RGG is the active involvement of the bass player and drummer in the process of music creation. This is definitely not a pianist with a rhythm section, but an organic three-headed body making music together.

This album can be a great service to the group as an introduction to their universe; surely anybody listening to it will want to explore their music further. People familiar with the Polish Jazz scene will immediately make the inevitable comparison between RGG and the "other" great Polish piano trio: Simple Acoustic TrioFind albums by this artist (or Marcin WasilewskiFind albums by this artist Trio). Comparisons of this sort are futile and have absolutely no sense, as both these trios play great music, each differently from the other. RGG are definitely closer to the Free / Improvised spirit of the music whereas Wasilewski´s trio is more disciplined and conventional, but both are examples of human talent and ingenuity of the highest ranking, which gives us all the immense pleasure of music.

It´s worth to mention that the album was recorded at the Studio Tokarnia, the best sound studio in Poland, and engineered by the studio´s owner (and a gifted musician himself) Jan SmoczynskiFind albums by this artist, which explains the incredible sound quality of this album. This is an absolute must to every Jazz piano trio connoisseur and of course anybody with a right pair of ears to appreciate great music. Not to be missed under any circumstances!

HOWARD RILEY / ELTON DEAN ~ ONE TO ONE
SLAM 234 (Barcode: 5028386023425) ~ UK ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

Recorded: 1993 - 1999 Released: 1999

This is an album by the British Jazz duo of pianist / composer Howard RileyFind albums by this artist and saxophonist / composer Elton DeanFind albums by this artist, one of several recordings the two great musicians made together. The album presents eight tracks, all recorded live, which originate from two performances captured six years apart. Five of the tracks are co-credited to the two musicians, two are their interpretations of music composed by other Jazz greats and one is their take on a standard.

The music is very intensive, partly based on melodic themes but largely improvised, with was the usual modus operandi of this duo, when working together. Both musicians cooperated for many years and offers a very tight rapport, which is beautifully portrayed herein.

Dean, who is mostly known for his work as a member of Soft MachineFind albums by this artist and other Canterbury scene ensembles, was in parallel involved with the Improvised Music / Free Jazz scene, which naturally is significantly less popular and widely known. His death in 2006 robbed the British Jazz scene not only of one of its greatest musicians, but also a kind and much loved human being.

Overall, this album is an important document of the British Free Jazz / Improvised Music scene in the 1990s, with a superb “Art of the Duo” performances by two brilliant musicians, who took no prisoners in their total approach to the music, and stayed faithful to their aesthetics, disregarding the musical fads and fashions, which came and went over the years.

HAROLD RUBIN ~ ONE VOICE
NOT ON LABEL ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2002 Released: 2002

If it wasn’t for the fact that Harold RubinFind albums by this artist (musician, painter and poet) lives and creates music in Israel, I’m pretty sure that he would have become one of the best-known icons of Avant-Garde jazz worldwide. Since I “discovered” Harold 20 years ago, he never ceased to amaze me every time I hear him play live or hear any of his recorded music. His absolutely unique approach to his instrument – the clarinet – and to music in general is phenomenal and in spite of his advanced age he is (to me) one of the most vigorous, adventurous and daring musicians on this planet. Although usually described as a free jazz player, his music can be movingly lyrical at times. He is able to express the entire range of human emotions, from peace and bliss to frenzy and rage. I really hope more people will discover his wonderful music in time. This recording captures Harold completely on his own for the first time (He usually plays in a trio / quartet setting and sometimes in duos). There is nothing else here but the man and his clarinet – the ultimate intimacy. Harold composed all the music included here, including the five part suite “A Quiet Place for Mr. K. K.” dedicated to King Kong, which he describes as follows: “It relates to a psychotic King Kong living in our now world, where brutality has become a way of life and fragile fragments of joy alleviate a terrifying sense of sadness”. I hope Harold’s music will become your “fragments of joy” forever.

KASPER TOM / RUDI MAHALL ~ ONE MAN`S TRASH IS ANOTHER MAN`S TREASURE
BAREFOOT 050 (Barcode: 5707471045640) ~ DENMARK ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

Recorded: 2016 Released: 2016

This is an album by the duo comprising of Danish drummer / composer Kasper Tom ChristiansenFind albums by this artist and German clarinetist / composer Rudi MahallFind albums by this artist, who are both members of the Kasper Tom 5Find albums by this artist quintet. Together they perform nine original pieces, all co-composed by Christiansen and Mahall.

The music is by far the most Avant-Garde excursion by Christiansen, who recorded prolifically in the last few years. Most of his albums as leader or sideman have been quite Free oriented, but this one seems to be completely instantaneously created Improvised Music, which abandons all forms of conventional Jazz completely.

The great charm of Christiansen´s music was always the ability to play ambitious and innovative music and at the same time to maintain accessibility to his music, which is not present, for the first time, on this album. Improvised music for the sake of being improvised is almost never able to reach many listeners beyond the actual performers, and this album proves it.

Although both Christiansen and Mahall are very gifted and promising young musicians, this album is simply "a bridge too far", crossing into the metaphysical sphere of concentration upon oneself and leaving the rest of the world behind.

After following Christiansen for a few years and enjoying his development, I am not discouraged at all by this album. It simply is another experiment on his path towards discovering his musical personality. Perhaps a bit self indulging and detached, but this album still shows great musicality and ability to communicate with his partner.

In short this is extreme Avant-Garde Improvised Music, for the hardcore fans of the genre only, and little appeal to more or less conventional listeners.

KENNY WHEELER ~ ONE OF MANY
CAM JAZZ 5042 (Barcode: 016728504225) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2006 Released: 2011

This is an intimate trio recording by the British trumpeter / composer Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist with his lifelong musical partner British pianist John TaylorFind albums by this artist and American bassist Steve SwallowFind albums by this artist (who plays electric bass). The three veterans play nine original compositions, all by Wheeler (one of which is repeated twice in duo and trio versions). The music was exquisitely recorded at the legendary Bauer Studio in Ludwigsburg (Germany) in 2006 but released only five years later. A year earlier (2005) Wheeler recorded three albums in the same studio: a quartet date "What Now?Find albums with this title", a duo with Taylor and a string quartet "Other PeopleFind albums with this title" and another duo with Taylor "On The Way To TwoFind albums with this title", all released on the Italian CAM JazzFind albums on this label label.

The music is typical "chamber" Wheeler setting, with the emphasis on his melodic ballad compositions. As always, the music is superbly executed by the telepathic Wheeler / Taylor duo, which this time gets a wonderful rhythmic and harmonic support from Swallow. His bass guitar often sounds here like a guitar and its beautiful tone adds another layer to the usual duo performances. In fact this is probably one of the most beautiful recordings by Swallow, who after all appears on hundreds of albums.

Aged 76 at the time of the recording, Wheeler is in perfect control of his instrument and his playing technique, delivering clear and moving statements like only he could, without trying to dazzle. His intrinsic modesty and honesty are behind his strength and power of expression.

The collected Kenny Wheeler recordings released on the CAM label document the wonderfully fruitful period of his long career, which sadly was also his last. They present a portrait of a mature Artist, who played the music he loved, accompanied by superb musicians, whom he respected and trusted. It is also a wonderful portrait of the mature European Jazz at its best, full of finesse, elegance and sophistication, a music Wheeler was a great pioneer of five decades earlier.

This is an instant and timeless Jazz classic of course, a piece of music one can relay on every time it is played, regardless of how many times one has already listened to it. An absolute must!

FRANK ZAPPA ~ ONE SHOT DEAL
ZAPPA 20007 (Barcode: 824302000724) ~ USA ~ Avant-Garde Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1972 - 1981 Released: 2008

This is the 83rd album by iconic American guitarist / composer / bandleader / visionary Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist, released posthumously in 2008. It is a collection of nine live recordings captured over a period of nine years, between 1972 and 1981, featuring a different lineup on each track, except on two tracks, which were recorded at the same concert, featuring the thirty-seven-piece orchestra, called again (see the “Lumpy GravyFind albums with this title” album) Abnuceals Amuukha Electric Symphony OrchestraFind albums by this artist, which recorded the “Orchestral FavoritesFind albums with this title” album.

The music spans a wide range of stylistic inclinations, mostly Jazz-Rock Fusion oriented, which characterized Zappa’s 1970s output, performed by lineups varying in size from a trio to an orchestra, as mentioned above. Zappa’s guitar work is prominently featured as well, emphasizing his total control of the instrument and his highly original phrasing.

As already stated repeatedly, every piece of Zappa’s music is an absolute gem, even if the music already appears elsewhere, since every performance is absolutely unique and different, always worth being heard, as this album proves beyond dispute. Although relatively less popular among the many Zappa releases, this album offers some absolutely brilliant music and playing, which do not appear on any other albums.

Overall, although fifty to forty years passed since this music was recorded, this album remains an absolute Classic in every respect, which stands proudly as an icon of superb music, which still shines brighter than almost anything else recorded since. Zappa’s genius, not only as a musician, but also as a visionary and a brilliant observer of the human condition and American folly and deceit, remain completely relevant and are even more actual today than ever.

ZAPPA 3853 (Barcode: 824302385326) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1974 - 1975 Released: 2012

This is a reissue / remaster of the 20th album by iconic American guitarist / composer / bandleader / visionary Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist, originally released in 1975. The album presents nine original songs, all by Zappa.

Zappa assembled an absolutely brilliant lineup of musicians to record the album, which included keyboardist George DukeFind albums by this artist, saxophonist / flautist Napoleon Murphy BrockFind albums by this artist, percussionist Ruth UnderwoodFind albums by this artist, bassist Tom FowlerFind albums by this artist and drummer Chester ThompsonFind albums by this artist. The vocals were performed by Zappa, Duke and Brock. Guest appearances include Johnny Guitar WatsonFind albums by this artist (vocals), Captain BeefheartFind albums by this artist (harmonica) and James YoumanFind albums by this artist (bass on one track). The album includes some of Zappa’s most notable guitar solos.

This album marks the new approach in Zappa’s convoluted musical path and marks his passionate affair with Jazz-Rock Fusion, which has its sources some years earlier in “The Hot Rats Sessions”, but came into full bloom and dominated his 1970s output. He managed to combine a very complex music, both harmonically and rhythmically, with a seemingly Rock or even Pop glam, to expand his audiences, without losing an iota of his musical integrity.

In retrospect the music on this album sounds a bit “timid” in comparison to the numerous live recordings of the same material, which was often expanded into lengthy improvisations and offered an explosion of energy and spontaneity. Nevertheless, these are the original versions of that gorgeous material, and have not only a nostalgic tinge, but are true Classics in every respect.

Overall, although almost fifty years passed since this music was recorded, this album remains an absolute Classic in every respect, which stands proudly as an icon of superb music, which still shines brighter than almost anything else recorded since. Zappa’s genius, not only as a musician, but also as a visionary and a brilliant observer of the human condition and American folly and deceit, remain completely relevant and are even more actual today than ever.
Side Note
