DAPHNE ARMONY ~ ONE WOMAN LESS
NMC (ISRAEL) 1029 ~ ISRAEL ~ Pop & Rock

Recorded: 1992 Released: 1992

This is the 2nd album by Israeli singer / songwriter Daphne ArmonyFind albums by this artist, produced by bassist Yossi FineFind albums by this artist, who also played on the album, with guitarist Ronnie PetersonFind albums by this artist, drummer Nir ZidkyahuFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Udi TurgemanFind albums by this artist and a few other musicians. The album presents eleven tracks, eight of which were written or co-written by Armony, and the rest by prominent Israeli songwriters like Shalom HanochFind albums by this artist (two songs) and Aviv GeffenFind albums by this artist (one song).

Armony’s eponymous debut album (“Daphne ArmonyFind albums with this title”), from 1986, was a sensational release at the time and to this day remains as one of Israeli Pop / Rock greatest achievements - an absolutely superb collection of great songs and sublime performances. Sadly, in retrospect, it did not result neither in a commercial success, nor in establishing Armony as one of Israeli Top music stars, although she was always “almost there” and undoubtedly earnt it. The release of this, her second album, made sadly very little impact, not because it did not deserve it, but probably it was a classic case of being “too good for its own good”. The highly personal and poetic texts were way to sophisticated and the music was way too demanding for the changing musical tastes on the 1990s market. The album was so neglected, that even me, a great lover of Armony’s music, failed to obtain a copy of this album, at the time it was released – mea culpa, mea maxima culpa – it took me no less than thirty-four years to find a copy of the CD after paying and arm and a leg for it, which of course I do not regret, loving every single note of it.

As already stated above, the album is very personal, reflecting Armony’s private life experiences, which knew many ups and downs. Her songwriting ability was already fully mature at the time and the amicable team of excellent musicians, that accompanied her on this recording, supported her flawlessly. Of course the Hebrew lyrics make it dedicated for the Israeli market, but as usual, I am pretty sure that music loving listeners could enjoy this album regardless of the language gap. Which of course makes me wonder why Armony never recorded an album with English lyrics, especially since she has a charming British accent and upbringing ;)

Overall, this is a beautiful and highly nostalgic (for me) piece of elegant and lasting Pop / Rock music, which lost nothing of its charm over time. It’s a pleasure to bring it back to the surface, hoping some music loving people will get exposed to this lost gem. And thank you, Milady, for these sweet memories!
