STEPHANE KERECKI / JOHN TAYLOR ~ PATIENCE ZIG-ZAG 110402 (Barcode: 3760009292468) ~ FRANCE ~ Jazz Recorded: 2010Released: 2010 This is a criminally little known duo album by French bassist Stephane KereckiFind albums by this artist and British pianist John TaylorFind albums by this artist. The album presents twelve pieces, eight composed by Kerecki, three improvised by both musicians and one standard by Scott LaFaroFind albums by this artist, and offers exceptional sound quality.
The music is quite complex and open, at part based on well defined melodic themes but also incorporating a much less rigorous structures, not completely Free but definitely not constrained by strict melody lines. This approach enables both musicians to stretch out and venture into extensive soloing, with the bass being featured somewhat more prominently than the piano.
The intimate duo setting is of course extremely demanding, but for these two veterans it is more of an opportunity than a challenge. They manage to work out a wonderful rapport and the album joins the "Art of the Duo" pedestal with flying colors.
Korecki plays some excellent arco parts and his sensitive handling of the bass is a tribute to the many great Jazz bassists in the genre´s history. Taylor seems to feel excellently in his company and the music is a reflection of this idyllic relationship.
Tragically it was during a performance with Kerecki´s quartet that Taylor suffered the fatal heart attack some five years after this album was recorded; a sad final note about this musical friendship. This album remains as a beautiful document of their common legacy.
