FRODE KJEKSTAD ~ STARS ALIGNED
LOSEN 327 (Barcode: 7090025833274) ~ NORWAY ~ Smooth Jazz

Recorded: 2025 Released: 2026

This is an album by the Norwegian Jazz guitarist / composer Frode KjekstadFind albums by this artist, recorded in a quartet setting with American saxophonist Eric AlexanderFind albums by this artist, British organist Roy PowellFind albums by this artist and German drummer Frederik VillmowFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine tracks, seven of which are original compositions by Kjekstad and two are standards. The bassless quartet with organ seems to be Kjekstad’s favorite musical setting, which is also featured on his earlier album “A Piece Of The AppleFind albums with this title” on LosenFind albums on this label Records.

The music is based on highly melodic tunes, all on the lighter side of the Jazz spectrum, which is highly entertaining and superbly performed by all four excellent musicians. It might be considered as a more sophisticated Smooth Jazz, but is firmly set in the Bebop traditions as well. Kjekstad is a highly proficient guitar player and surely knows to use all the right licks. Powell’s organ parts are great fun, and since the organ is one of my favorite instruments, I had a tremendous time with this music.

Overall, this is a wonderfully performed and highly accessible Jazz album, which might appeal also way beyond the traditional Jazz audiences. The entertaining character does not undermine any of the music’s aesthetic values, which are firmly intact.
