Haden needs no introduction to any serious Jazz connoisseur; suffice to say that from the early days with Ornette ColemanFind albums by this artist in the late 1950s, his bass playing would definitely establish "The Shape Of Jazz To Come", paraphrasing on the title of Haden´s first recording with Coleman. Later on he was a member of the legendary Keith JarrettFind albums by this artist US quartet and later cooperated with the most distinguished Jazz musicians around the globe. His virtuosic bass playing and excellent compositions are always a source of great musical joy. However, the Black Saint / Soul Note Box Sets produced under the CAM JazzFind albums on this label moniker are an archetypal example of how good intentions turn sour. Although these new editions often bring back to life some of the best music ever made on this planet, which in many cases has been lost in the tides of time and was unavailable on the market for ages, they suffer from an unforgivable disregard to the essence of cultural values and general sloppiness, contrary to human decency, which requires us to treat our cultural legacy with respect and loyalty. These Box Sets have no booklet which presents researched historical background and exact discographical information of the albums included, and most importantly an overview of the music and its meaning and contribution to the Jazz Art form. Although the original LP sleeves are reproduced, the information is in most cases too small to be readable at all. In short the fact that these Box Sets are meant to be inexpensive, does not mean that they have to be cheap!

ENRICO PIERANUNZI ~ FROM ALWAYS TO NOW ALFA MUSIC 222 (Barcode: 8032050019291) ~ ITALY ~ Jazz Recorded: 1978 - 2002 Released: 2019 This is a reissue / remaster of the fourth album as a leader by the legendary Italian pianist / composer / bandleader Enrico PieranunziFind albums by this artist, originally released in 1978. It was recorded in a duo / trio / quartet setting with saxophonist Maurizio GiammarcoFind albums by this artist, bassist Bruno TommasoFind albums by this artist and drummer Roberto GattoFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven tracks, four of which are original compositions by Pieranunzi, one is by Giammarco and two are standards. This reissue adds a duo with saxophonist Rosario GiulianiFind albums by this artist, recorded in 2002, as a bonus track. The music is, as expected, absolutely stunning, with Pieranunzi displaying his dazzling virtuosity, playing mostly up tempo tunes with ferocious speed, but a ballad or two balances the mood as well. All the other players are also excellent, and this album presents them in their early stages of their career, like Gatto, who was only 20 years old at the time and this was his debut recording. Already at this early stage of his career Pieranunzi clearly displays the characteristics, which will become his trademarks for many years to come: dazzling technique, great sense of melody, superbly crafted compositions and total dedication to his music. Overall, this is a classic album and an excellent document of Italian Jazz of the late 1970s. Kudos to Alfa Music for saving this gem from oblivion, enabling many new listeners to get exposed to this music, which despite being over four decades old, still shines and sounds as brightly, as it did at the time it was originally released.

ENRICO PIERANUNZI ~ THE DAY AFTER SILENCE ALFA MUSIC 165 (Barcode: 8032050014012) ~ ITALY ~ Jazz Recorded: 1976 Released: 2014 This is a reissue / remaster of the second album as a leader and the first solo piano album by the legendary Italian pianist / composer / bandleader Enrico PieranunziFind albums by this artist, originally released in 1976. The album presents ten original compositions, all by Pieranunzi. The album offers excellent sound quality and a comprehensive booklet (in four languages), which describes the historical background of Italian Jazz at the time of the recording and the early career of Pieranunzi. The music is absolutely divine and stands the test of time brilliantly. Both the superb compositions and Pieranunzi’s extraordinary technique are already fully developed at this early stage and his music is simply everlasting. Pieranunzi belongs to the first wave of Italian Jazz musicians, who developed the modern Italian approach to Jazz, which breaks its tight ties with the American Jazz tradition and moves toward the European Jazz school. In parallel to the Avant-Garde wave, which sprung in Italy in the 1970s, many musicians, like Pieranunzi, decided to stay closer to the mainstream Jazz idiom, but add the Italian “taste” and idiosyncratic musical accents, from which modern Italian just developed in time. Although this album still shows some Americanisms, going as far back as Ragtime and Stride, Pieranunzi brilliantly updates them with his beautiful personal touch and Italian melodic influences, which results in purely delightful music. Overall, this is a superb solo piano album, which deserves an honorable place in any serious Jazz albums collection. Thanks to Alfa Music for bringing the almost “lost” treasure back to life, for next generations of music lovers to enjoy. It is definitely a National treasure!
