This is a wonderful archival live album by British Jazz and Pop vocalist Georgie FameFind albums by this artist. Most of the material (thirteen tracks) presents a concert captured by the BBC TV on May 12, 1968, with Fame accompanied by the American Count BasieFind albums by this artist Band. Four additional tracks present a live concert captured by Swedish TV on May 25, 1968, with Fame accompanied by his British Jazz Band, which included saxophonist Lyn DobsonFind albums by this artist, trombonist Derek WadsworthFind albums by this artist, guitarist John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist and drummer Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist among others. Four additional tracks present a BBC Radio show from late 1967 and early 1968, and finally the last track presents Fame as guest in a Dusty SpringfieldFind albums by this artist TV show in May 1968.
The music is all Mono and the sound quality of the concert with Basie is as iffy as this kind of albums often offer, but who cares, the music is absolutely heavenly and Fame was always my all-time favorite British Jazz vocalist. The album shows how easily Fame could handle any Big Band, something he was quite used to do over the years, singing brilliantly Jazz standards and material from his repertoire. His absolutely original approach to Jazz vocals is a story in itself.
The album offers two great “one time” occasions; the meeting with the Basie Band (Orchestra) and the legendary post-Blue Flames band, which are captured here live and expand Fame’s known discography, after I was convinced I already have everything in my collection. Overall, this is another great archival release by the label that manages to uncover previously unreleased gems. The quality is what it is but the music is absolutely sublime and these albums are a must in any serious British Jazz record collection!
