  | JIRI STIVIN & PIERRE FAVRE ~ EXCURSIONS II (VYLETY II) - TWENTY YEARS LATER P&J 015 (Barcode: 8595018201522) ~ CZECH REPUBLIC ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 1998 Released: 1998
This is the second album by the duo of two legendary European Jazz musicians: Czech flautist / saxophonist / composer Jiri StivinFind albums by this artist and Swiss drummer / composer Pierre FavreFind albums by this artist, recorded (almost) twenty years after the recording of their legendary debut album “Vylety (Excursions)Find albums with this title”, which was beautifully reissued by GalenFind albums on this label Records in 2019. The album, recorded live in 1998, presents thirteen tracks, which are mostly improvised and are co-credited to both duo members.
The performances portray the incredible abilities of both musicians as well as their telepathic cooperation. Fellow musicians often jokingly told that Stivin could produce a sound from anything that could be blown into and apparently the same can be told about Favre as far as beating on things is concerned. The sounds they are able to produce and combine are simply magical. Astonishingly the music is completely embracing and accessible and as far as Improvised Music is concerned it is not only pioneering but also incredibly contemporary, in spite of the fact that it is decades old. It lost absolutely nothing of its fascination and beauty over time and it is a brilliant example of the “Art of the Duo” Jazz phenomenon!
This album was produced by my Friend Petr PylypovFind albums by this artist on his small P&JFind albums on this label Music label. The music was recorded by Czech Radio and offers an incredible sound quality. The booklet includes some great background information about Stivin and Favre, but it sadly only in Czech language.
Overall, this is a brilliant example of European Jazz at its highest possible level and offers a unique chapter in its history. Sadly, it took me years to find a copy of this album, since it was not reissued and in time disappeared deep into oblivion. Happy to see my long pursue was finally successful, as this is a true treasure!
