This is a very unusual album by British Jazz trumpeter / composer Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, recorded with the Canadian contemporary Avant-Garde Classical Music composer and Jazz guitarist Tim BradyFind albums by this artist. The album presents the five movements composition "Visions" for string orchestra and improvisational soloist (in this case Kenny Wheeler on flugelhorn / cornet) performed by L`Orchestre de Chambre de MontrealFind albums by this artist conducted by Wanda KaluznyFind albums by this artist. Additionally the album also presents three duets by Brady on guitar and Wheeler, one solo piece for guitar and electronics and three solo pieces for guitar, all composed and performed by Brady.
Over the years Wheeler often visited Canada and performed with Canadian musicians, never neglecting his Canadian origins, but this recording is a very rare and unprecedented venture into Avant-Garde Classical Music by Wheeler and as such a rare gem in his recorded legacy.
Wheeler obviously feels perfectly at home playing with the orchestra and his spectacular performances here seem to be as natural as one can imagine within an Avant-Garde piece, which turns out to be quite "tame" as far as Avant-Garde Classical Music is concerned. The balance and interplay between the string orchestra and the flugelhorn works out wonderfully, and the entire piece is a truly delightful musical experience.
The duos and solo pieces are quite a different realm, much closer to Improvised Music and Avant-Garde Jazz. The intimacy of the duets is a rare opportunity to hear a close conversation between the two musicians and the solo pieces open a window into the fascinating world of Brady´s guitar vistas. Brady is often praised as one of the most original Jazz guitarist out there and this is certainly a most inviting opportunity to get familiar with his works.
Overall this is a fascinating offering of little known music and an absolute must for Kenny Wheeler connoisseurs and collectors, highly recommended!
