OYVIND MATHISEN ~ GET YOUR GOAT
AMP 110 (Barcode: 013415902104) ~ NORWAY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2020 Released: 2022

This is the second album by young Norwegian Jazz trumpeter / composer Oyvind MathisenFind albums by this artist, recorded in a quartet setting with saxophonist / bass clarinetist Alexander DellerhagenFind albums by this artist, pianist Petter DalaneFind albums by this artist and bassist Alf HoinesFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine original compositions, eight by Mathisen and one by Dellerhagen.

The music is absolutely wonderful from start to finish, full of clever and highly original compositions, all characterized by one weird twist or another, either melodically or rhythmically or both. Although melody based, the music has many degrees of freedom and is full of great sense of humor, which is a “deadly” combination as far as I am concerned.

The drumless quartet offers also a very unusual sound, sometimes with a vaudeville feel, circus or street music atmosphere, flirting with familiar Jazz forms and yet being not there in full. The entire duration of the album is a brilliant journey into the unexpected, which happens sadly so rarely these days.

The individual performances are all marvelous, but it is the quartet sound as a whole that matters here, with the superb balance, or lack of it, between the instruments, which often play solo, duo and trio passages as well. The entire performance is a crazy seesaw ride, truly unforgettable.

Overall, this album shines with originality, talent and sophistication, and as such is one of the finest releases I had the pleasure to listen to this year. Wholeheartedly recommended to all open-minded Jazz listeners around the world. Obviously these musicians are now on my close watch list!
