  | CRISTINA PRATS COSTA ~ SPIRITILLO MEDITERRANEO PENTATONE 8717306265829 (Barcode: 8717306265829) ~ SPAIN ~ Classical Music Recorded: 2024 Released: 2026
This is the debut solo recording by Spanish violinist Cristina Prats CostaFind albums by this artist, a renowned Baroque Music performer. It presents a wonderful collection of relatively short pieces, all composed in the 16th and early 17th Century by nine different composers. The album presents twenty-four tracks, which span thirteen compositions. The violinist is accompanied by six additional instrumentalists, who play on instruments from the Baroque period. The sound quality of the recording is excellent and reflects a natural ambience of the church it was recorded in.
Of course the “Mediterranean Spirit” intended by this album’s title is quite different to the contemporary meaning of the term, and refers to the music created by Spanish, French and Italian composers of the Baroque period, all of which are also Mediterranean countries after all.
The music is absolutely delightful, with a certain mischievous charm, which is often connected to the Mediterranean character, which is mostly less “serious” and constrained emotionally than that of Northern Europe. As a result, the music seems all to be “danceable” and happier, which of course is often related to the local climate, food and social norms. My favorite selections on this album are the “Ayres for the Violin” by Italian composer Nicola MatteisFind albums by this artist, who lived most of his life in London, which span fifteen tracks (some very short) and which are sadly very rarely recorded.
The violinist plays wonderfully and with great passion and sensitivity, obviously very gifted and dedicated performer, which means that she deserves to be followed closely, waiting impatiently for her next projects. The accompanying musicians are a perfect fit for the job, and deserve a thankful note.
Overall, this is another excellent release by the Dutch PentatoneFind albums on this label label, which seems to be one of the most open-minded Classical and beyond record labels these days, for which I and probably many music lovers the world over are grateful. Hats off for the great job!
