LARRY CORYELL ~ HEAVY FEEL
WIDE HIVE 0325 (Barcode: 698873032527) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2014 Released: 2015

This is one of the last studio recordings by the legendary American guitarist / composer / bandleader Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist, recorded in a quartet setting with saxophonist George BrooksFind albums by this artist, bassist Matt MontgomeryFind albums by this artist and drummer Mike HughesFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine tracks, four of which are original compositions by Coryell and the rest are composed or co-composed by the other quartet members and the album’s producer Gregory HoweFind albums by this artist, who was also in charge of recording the music. Both Coryell and Montgomery use acoustic and electric instruments.

The session seems to be pretty informal, and includes studio chatter and Coryell’s humming accompanying his soloing, which was not filtered, but the music is an important somewhat nostalgic reminder of the sublime talent of Coryell, close to his unfortunate premature death in 2017.

Coryell is considered the Godfather of American Fusion and his recordings with Gary BurtonFind albums by this artist and later his solo albums and albums with his Eleventh HouseFind albums by this artist ensemble, as well as his collaborations with other great guitarists like John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist, Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist and others are all Fusion classics. In the last period of his life Coryell returned to play more mainstream oriented Jazz, but never missed an opportunity to play some Fusion oriented material as well.

Overall, this is a rather informal recording session, which offers an opportunity to hear the great Larry Coryell performing his usual magic with less renowned musicians, but still displaying his phenomenal technique and talent. Obviously a must for all Coryell followers.
