  | ANTHONY BRAXTON ~ THE COMPLETE REMASTERED RECORDINGS ON BLACK SAINT & SOUL NOTE CAM JAZZ 1012 (Barcode: 8052405140081) ~ USA ~ Jazz Recorded: 1978 - 1994 Released: 2011
This superb Box Set collects all the albums recorded by the legendary US reedman / composer Anthony BraxtonFind albums by this artist on the twin Italian independent labels: Black SaintFind albums on this label and Soul NoteFind albums on this label. Braxton needs no introduction to any serious Jazz connoisseur; suffice to say that from the early days with AACMFind albums by this artist in Chicago he retained his position in the spearhead of modern music as one of its greatest pioneers, prophets and philosophers. His completely unique approach to playing and composing music has put his in a class of itself and his prolific recorded output is always a source of great musical joy. The musicians playing on these five albums include: drummer Max RoachFind albums by this artist, trombonist George LewisFind albums by this artist, bassist John LindbergFind albums by this artist, drummer Gerry HemingwayFind albums by this artist, bassist Mark DresserFind albums by this artist, pianist Mal WaldronFind albums by this artist and many others. Remastered, mini-sleeved, and with a great bargain price – this Box Set an absolute must for any serious Jazz collector. Side Note The Italian independent record label Black SaintFind albums on this label was founded by the music critic / author / producer Giacomo PellicciottiFind albums by this artist in 1975. It was taken over by the producer Giovanni BonandriniFind albums by this artist in 1978 and a year later (1979) a sister label, called Soul NoteFind albums on this label, was established. The twin labels were run by Giovanni and later his son Flavio BonandriniFind albums by this artist, until they were sold in 2008 to the Italian KEPACH Music Group, which already owned the CAM JazzFind albums on this label label, and which also bought another Italian independent record label Dischi Della QuerciaFind albums on this label.
The mission of the Black Saint / Soul Note labels was to record and document the Free Jazz / Improvised Music / Avant-Garde scene, mostly from the US but also from Europe, which continued between mid 1970s and late 1990s and produced a staggering collection of almost 550 albums recorded by world's most important Jazz innovators active at the time, providing an opportunity to American (mostly Afro-American) musicians, who would have never managed to make these recordings at home, ridden by racism, alienation and closed-mindedness. Without these two labels most of this fantastic human creativity would have been never documented.
However, the Black Saint / Soul Note Box Sets produced under the CAM JazzFind albums on this label moniker are an archetypal example of how good intentions turn sour. Although these new editions often bring back to life some of the best music ever made on this planet, which in many cases has been lost in the tides of time and was unavailable on the market for ages, they suffer from an unforgivable disregard to the essence of cultural values and general sloppiness, contrary to human decency, which requires us to treat our cultural legacy with respect and loyalty.
These Box Sets have no booklet which presents researched historical background and exact discographical information of the albums included, and most importantly an overview of the music and its meaning and contribution to the Jazz Art form. Although the original LP sleeves are reproduced, the information is in most cases too small to be readable at all. In short the fact that these Box Sets are meant to be inexpensive, does not mean that they have to be cheap!

  | ALEX CLINE ~ FOR PEOPLE IN SORROW CRYPTOGRAMOPHONE 146 (Barcode: 671860014621) ~ USA ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 2011 Released: 2012
This is a momentous album by American drummer Alex ClineFind albums by this artist, which pays homage to the saxophonist / composer Roscoe MitchellFind albums by this artist´s composition of the same title as this album, originally recorded in 1969 in Paris by the Art Ensemble Of ChicagoFind albums by this artist and released first in France and then in the US. The original piece, which lasted for forty minutes, is expanded here to last almost sixty four minutes and is performed by fourteen participants assembled for this occasion, in contrast to the original quartet recording with Mitchell, saxophonist Joseph JarmanFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Lester BowieFind albums by this artist and bassist Malachi FavorsFind albums by this artist. In addition the album also includes a recitation of a poem by Larry WardFind albums by this artist, entitled "A Wild Thing".
The musicians taking part in the recording include, in addition to Cline of course, saxophonist Oliver LakeFind albums by this artist, woodwinds player Vinny GoliaFind albums by this artist, violinist Jeff GauthierFind albums by this artist, bassist Mark DresserFind albums by this artist and other representatives of the American Avant-Garde community. Considering the fact that the original music was largely freely improvised, this new performance is not an attempt to re-create the original performances as such, but to preset them in-spirit, i.e. invoke a series of new spontaneous improvisations by contemporary musicians, inspired by the music created over forty years earlier.
The greatest challenge of Free Jazz / Improvised Music is always the question if the music created during a live performance continues to be a valid listening experience in recorded form and if it inspires repeated listening. Only in a minority of cases the answer to both these questions is affirmative, and this recording definitely belongs to one of the performances with a lasting value. This happens not due to the spectacular individual performances, which can be heard herein, but only due to the aesthetic and emotional commitment the musicians make in the process.
The music is well recorded and beautifully packaged, with many beautiful photographs included and with in-depth liner notes by Cline himself. It also includes a DVD documenting the performance. The package and its contents fits very well the image, which the excellent CryptogramophoneFind albums on this label label is maintaining for years, firmly establishing its position as one of the most interesting record labels in existence.
This album proves that although Jazz in America is almost dead and certainly smells funny, there are oases of sanity, creativity, ingenuity and artistic greatness, which kindle a hope for the future, against all odds.
Warmly recommended!

  | DAVE DOUGLAS ~ THE COMPLETE REMASTERED RECORDINGS ON BLACK SAINT & SOUL NOTE CAM JAZZ 1020 (Barcode: 8052405140630) ~ USA ~ Jazz Recorded: 1993 - 1998 Released: 2012
This superb Box Set collects all the albums recorded by the legendary American trumpeter / composer Dave DouglasFind albums by this artist on the twin Italian independent labels: Black SaintFind albums on this label and Soul NoteFind albums on this label. The set includes three albums he recorded as a leader, a live recording with the expanded version of the RovaFind albums by this artist quartet dedicated to John ColtraneFind albums by this artist´s album "AscensionFind albums with this title", and two albums as a sideman: one with John LindbergFind albums by this artist and another with Mark DresserFind albums by this artist.
Douglas is well known as a member of John ZornFind albums by this artist´s MassadaFind albums by this artist group, but he is also a most prolific recording artist on his own, with an impressive list of albums to his credit. These recordings present his output in the 1990s, and they are all excellent examples of his work, which combines Free Jazz, ethnic influences and Improvised Music, all based on a strong tradition of Modern Jazz. Douglas is perfectly comfortable playing melody and completely improvised passages, always preserving his perfect timing and absolutely beautiful tone.
The list of the players present on these recordings reads like the Who´s Who of the American Avant-Garde scene and includes violinist Mark FeldmanFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Larry OchsFind albums by this artist, bassists Mark Dresser and John Lindberg, drummers Michael SarinFind albums by this artist and Ed ThigpenFind albums by this artist and many others. The music spans a wide range of different musical environments and approaches, all executed with flare and obvious talent. Most of this music should be accessible even to listeners with limited Avant-Garde experience of affiliation, but those who have already the appropriate background with enjoy this music to the max. Brilliant stuff!

  | KLAUS KONIG ORCHESTRA ~ TIME FRAGMENTS ENJA 8076 (Barcode: 063757807629) ~ GERMANY ~ Big Band Jazz Recorded: 1994 Released: 1994
This is the fifth album by German composer / conductor Klaus KonigFind albums by this artist, recorded with a twelve-piece Orchestra comprising of many top European and American Jazz musicians, including, among others British Jazz trumpeter Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, French tuba player Michel GodardFind albums by this artist, American violinist Mark FeldmanFind albums by this artist, bassist Mark DresserFind albums by this artist and drummer Gerry HemingwayFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven tracks, all composed by Konig, which are parts of a suite. This is the fourth installment of a five-suite cycle by Konig.
Wheeler took part also in a recording of the third album by Konig, entitled “At The End Of The UniverseFind albums with this title”. Since this is a large orchestral recording, Wheeler’s soloing is perhaps less prominent than on his small group recordings, but are especially important here, in view of Kenny’s love of large ensembles. Both albums seem to be available without much ado. This is one of Wheeler’s recordings, which remains almost completely obscure and does not appear in most of his discographies. I was very lucky to get it from Kenny’s private collection.
The music is an absolutely fascinating European Orchestral Jazz, which offers some melodic themes but the performance is full of very open / Free Form improvisations, which altogether offers a challenging, but highly rewarding listening experience and a great example of the European approach to Big Band music, which is diametrically opposed to the American Tradition. Konig certainly manages to combine the basic elements of the Jazz tradition with contemporary / almost Avant-Garde facets of the genre and the result is simply astounding. His work as a composer is certainly highly unconventional and deserves to be followed, as his recording legacy certainly proves.
Overall, this is an excellent modern Big Band / Orchestral Jazz album, performed by first class musicians, which is absolutely worth digging for, not only for the great contributions by Kenny Wheeler, but no less importantly for the splendid music and superb performances by the entire team.

  | ALON NECHUSHTAN ~ DARK FORCES CREATIVE SOURCES 195 (Barcode: 5609063401950) ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz Recorded: 2003 - 2010 Released: 2011
Israeli (resident in NY) keyboardist / composer Alon NechushtanFind albums by this artist emerges as one of the most remarkable musicians of the new generation. His exceptional work with his TalatFind albums by this artist quintet in the field of radical Jewish music and his piano trio recording released recently were both refreshing and of exceptional quality, but nothing could prepare his audiences for this momentous work, which reveals him as a major Avant-Garde composer / performer. Recorded over a period of seven years, this album presents a series of compositions for electronic keyboards and a Jazz ensemble, merging ambient, electronic, Free Jazz and Improvised Music. The list of players reads like the who´s who of contemporary US Free Jazz / experimental scene and includes bassist Mark DresserFind albums by this artist, bass clarinetist Ned RothenbergFind albums by this artist, guitarists Henry KaiserFind albums by this artist and Elliott SharpFind albums by this artist and many other outstanding musicians. The music consists of electronic ambient layers, which serve as basis for the Jazz players to paint their improvisations on top. It is heavily atmospheric, magical and enthralling, pulling the listener deeper and deeper into the strangely beautiful world of sound created by the composer and the performers. Of course such music requires attentive listening, but as Avant-Garde as it is, it remains highly communicative, even to the lesser trained ears. This album proves that Nechushtan is a surprisingly versatile musician, with lots to offer, which means he should be closely followed as he keeps surprising us again and again. Great stuff!
