The album, co-produced by Joe ThomasFind albums by this artist, was recorded with a large team of session musicians, with Wilson handling all the vocal and some instrumental parts. The album presents eleven tracks, all written by Wilson and partly co-written by Thomas and others. The album is dedicated to Carl WilsonFind albums by this artist, Brian’s brother and Beach Boys member, who died from cancer some time shortly before the album was recorded. The album was savagely criticized at the time of its release by music critics and suffered from poor sales, mainly due to the commercial sound and arrangements by Thomas, which led to a legal dispute between Wilson and Thomas, but the two returned to work together on future Beach Boys and solo Wilson albums. In retrospect, the album sounds completely fine to me, with Wilson’s songwriting Genius easily outshining any production faults that might have occurred. The sublime vocal harmonies and beautiful tunes last completely untouched by passing time. Overall, this is an integral part of Wilson’s wonderful recorded legacy, which together with his work with the Beach Boys, belongs to the best American Pop / Rock musical output in all time. This is timeless stuff!
