This is the 7th album by Polish Jazz quintet New BoneFind albums by this artist, led by trumpeter Tomasz KudykFind albums by this artist, with saxophonist Marcin KonieczkowiczFind albums by this artist, pianist Dominik WaniaFind albums by this artist, bassist Maciej AdamczakFind albums by this artist and drummer Dawid FortunaFind albums by this artist. Vocalists Zuza BaumFind albums by this artist and Jasiek PiwowarczykFind albums by this artist guest on a couple of tracks. The album present eight tracks, four of which are original compositions by the leader, two by Adamczak and one each by Wania and Konieczkowicz. The album was recorded at Polish Radio Studio 4, engineered by Tadeusz MieczkowskiFind albums by this artist, and offers an exceptional sound quality.

As I have already stated in my reviews of the two previous albums by the quintet, the music they play went through a significant transformation towards modern Jazz and individuality, and I am happy to hear that this direction continues on this album as well. The quintet reached a perfect personal balance with the addition of Konieczkowicz, who is an ideal partner to the stylistic lyricism expressed by the leader’s trumpet playing and compositional approach. Wania is unwavering in the position of the harmonic anchor and virtuosic soloist, and the rhythm section firmly and creatively keeps the music in high swing. The addition of the vocals is a nice touch, albeit a bit risky one, since it is not organically a part of the music, but altogether worked quite well.

Although dominated by highly melodic, often melancholic tendencies, the music opens up to slightly more adventurous ventures, which are the highlights of the album (see Wania’s solo on track four, which is perfection incarnate), and hopefully will find more exposure in future recordings. Kudyk’s trumpet playing also shows more open tonality, which is beautifully effective and most welcome. Konieczkowicz soft and mellow tone is like honey and reminds me of the warmth Stan GetzFind albums by this artist was projecting. Hopefully he we be more prominently featured on future recordings.

Overall, this is a truly wonderful album, full of heartwrenching music, which keeps the listener captured for the entire duration. Yes, it is still mostly very well behaved, but by God, we all need some solace in these crazy times, and music remains the solitary source of unadulterated pleasure. Hats off, Gentlemen! (and Lady ;)
