The album presents ten tracks, all composed or co-composed by the leader and the sextet members.
The music is a wonderful amalgam of beautiful melodic themes and highly improvised passages, all flavored by folkloristic ambience of both Far Eastern and Middle Eastern origins. This strange brew is truly mesmerizing and one of my favorite albums lately, which despite the never-ending queue in my desk, somehow managed to receive repeated listening sessions.
I don’t know the reason Dharmawan chose this enigmatic album’s title (Greek for moment of recognition / self-realization), but perhaps his deeper discovery of Improvised Music is what prompted him to choose it. I am familiar with his earlier recording, and this album is definitely a major change of direction. Following my recent visits in beautiful Athens, I realize now how many great improvisers exists on the local Greek scene, and this album is potent proof of that fact.
Overall, this is a sensational album, completely unique and stunningly beautiful, constantly surprising and multi-layered, which enables an open-minded listener to discover new treasures with every listening session. It is a great proof how musicians from different countries or even continents are able to communicate without borders. Beyond recommendation!
