EUROPEAN JAZZ TRIO ~ EUROPEAN JAZZ TRIO
KONNEX 5300 (Barcode: 4260031187491) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2013 Released: 2013

This is an album by a trio of European Jazz Masters, called simply European Jazz TrioFind albums by this artist, the members of which are members of the legendary European Jazz EnsembleFind albums by this artist. The trio consists of Czech flautist / saxophonist Jiri StivinFind albums by this artist and German saxophonist Gerd DudekFind albums by this artist and bassist Ali HaurandFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine tracks, one of which is a medley, with most of the music composed by the trio members with just a couple of standards (within the medley) and one tune by Polish Jazz legend Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artist.

The music is everything one might expect from these fabulous musicians, who play their hearts out and use the intimate acoustic trio format to perform a series of solo / duo / trio encounters. Since they have been playing together since many years in various settings, the mutual exchanges are telepathically coordinated and full of mutual respect and obvious friendship.

Although the music is based on composed themes, the album offers lengthy improvisations and dialogues / trialogues of the highest quality. Haurand is able to support his two friends amicably and his bass notes are the solid ground on which the music flows securely and confidently. Of course both Stivin and Dudek are absolute Masters of their instruments and this is a splendid opportunity to hear them crossing swords with love and affection.

Overall, this is a wonderful opportunity to hear these three musicians as intimately as possible, at the late stage of their career. Haurand, who died in 2018 and Dudek, who died in 2022, are sadly no longer with us and this album is a perfect tribute to their talents. Stivin is very much alive and kicking, which is always great to hear :)
